to four pacifics on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Find your local station for Gavino and Rich at Fox
Sports Radio dot com, or stream us live every day
on the iHeartRadio app by searching the FS Soccer. Unfortunately,
Lebron's always in the news. Like Danny g said, he's
like the the Aaron Rodgers now of the NBA. It's
almost like you don't want to talk about him. You
(00:32):
don't want to give it the attention. You just want
to know where he's gonna end up. But you have
to Yeah, before we get into all that fun, there
is no soccer tonight. But did you see the games yesterday? Yeah? First,
I want to say that that's what separates like championship
teams and what we saw the USA do. And that's
(00:53):
no knock on the USA, but they had an opportunity
to win over millions and trillions and millions of fans
that were tuned in. Billions they were tuned in. And
I'm quoting our bud Hercules Gomez, who played for Team
USA and who was a friend in College of Ours.
They fed us this belief that they had a chance.
We believe, so we got caught up in this fever
(01:16):
only to watch this dud of a performance. It was
one of the weakest butt fumbles of World Cup soccer
that we ever watched. So they had the opportunity to
seize the moment and win people over. Didn't even need
to be a victory Rich that would have been great,
but some fight would have been what everyone wanted.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Covinogus our video guys spot this morning on our Patreon
was was like adamant, like.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
What were your expectations? Did you think they were gonna
win the whole thing?
Speaker 1 (01:41):
And I said no, I just think most Americans were like, yo,
if they could win two knockout games and get to
the final eight thousand semifinals, that would have been a
step in the direction of like, Wow, we're making progress.
But that lackluster ass performance. I know, we've had like
a couple of days to think about it now.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
That was Yeah, that's where every CASUALS fan image is like,
this is what we were excited about.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
You lied to us. We saw yeah, we toured in,
we got excited. We believed from that analogy yesterday CVIO.
It's like a team in March madness that it's like
a fifteen or sixteen seed that were you know, even fourteen.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
They win one or two games and you're like, oh
my god, the magic and then they end up bumping
into like a Michigan State or a duke or someone.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
You're like, oh, that's right back to reality. And what
did we say when we filled in for Dan Patrick.
It is lack of star power and people stepping up,
and every team seems to have their stars. We discussed
and we saw that on full display yesterday, the difference,
the contrast between a USA and an Argentina defending champions.
They were down in the game and you got a
guy like Messi who leads you back to victory. Like
(02:41):
in those championship moments. They step up and they deliver
and prove why they're the superstars that they are. And
there's no more debate. This guy's the goat. He's the greatest.
We saw him with his assists, we see him with
the goals. They come back and beat Egypt three to two.
Not to mention a Switzerland game was a sweet shootout
at the end, you know, beating Columbia. So we had
(03:01):
great games yesterday, but this Argentina one is the one
I'm focusing on. That's the difference Number one. Number two,
the Egypt coach, we got to discuss, like what was
going on.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
I thought the question was gonna be who's more unhinged
a dad of a teenage daughter or the Egyptian coach.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
The dad of a teenage daughter walks around kind of
walks around defeated, you know, like, oh man, I'm just
I don't know what I'm gonna do. Defeated. Yes, that's
the only thing in common. The coach of team Egypt
walks around angry. Yeah, just there's no anger in the
(03:36):
defeated dad, just just misery. Uh. There was a lot
of anger and poor sportsmanship and sour grapes, and you know,
there was a lot of things said and it does
make you think. You know, I'm not I never buy
into rigging in sports. I just don't. But you know
there was some things said. We do hear FIFA's corrupt
all the time. We've heard that forever, So let's talk
(03:58):
about it. There's no tonight. Question one, so what are
we gonna do? What are we doing? Number two is
did you see the coach yesterday.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
It's a night to go on a nice date to
night midwich is no, uh, no reservations needed at nice restaurants.
And maybe after some World Cup and just focus on
other things, maybe going a nice old date with the wife,
your girlfriend tonight, Like, don't don't blow this opportunity and
do nothing.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Get some ice cream, he said ice cream. I could
go for frozen yogurt.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Frozen yogurt is a is the is the the batch
of ice cream with people like I'm going on for
fro Yo, go all the way, get ice cream, none
of this fro Yo nonsense, you know, for fro Yo.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Speaking speaking of ice cream, we do have a Stone
Cold Steve Austin stopping by today.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
No Coldstone Steve.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I keep saying it wrong. Coldstone Steve Austin stopping by today, Yeah, Mike.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Mike looks like if Stone Cold just had too much
Cold Stone.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, I know. I just I have an inability to
say it the way I'm trying to say it. Coldstone Steves.
And he's got a doozy of an ice cream take today.
I know he's got a crazy take. So rich, let's
talk about not only are you doing something fun tonight
because it's like our first free night. But also, what
were your thoughts with the egypt coach yesterday when I
(05:11):
talk about things he said, he's saying that the game
was rigged. I don't know how you rig a perfect
pass from Messi first of all, like dropping dots, I know, but.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
He's saying that was He's saying the goal that was
called back, that was like the beginning of like they
can't let.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
It was definitely suspect, right, they have this breakaway they score,
You're like, man, that was incredible and it gets called
back from something like before the play evens started. Like, man,
that was tough, But that doesn't allow you to give
up three goals. Yeah. Yeah, So that goes to my
point as well. It's like, but the other stuff, you're
not rigging that, it's impossible. The guy was spitting on
(05:48):
fans uncalled for unprofessional, just disgusting. Probably the lowest form
of disrespect one could show, uh, the f us, the
fighting the photographers, like we saw probably the ultimate display
of bad sportsmanship yesterday.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
I gotta ask you along the lines of this, the
Egyptian coach being unhinged, A lot of unsportsmanlike stuff, a
lot of unpro activities. But let me ask you, like,
what what could get you unhinged? I mean not to
bring up, you know, dad life or marital life or
going through some stress. I think that sports are one
(06:24):
of the things that could really unhinge you. Not that
you're gonna be like the Egyptian coach.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
But did you see the coach on in Philadelpia When
someone calls me chicken.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Oh yeah, mccly style.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, like Martin mcclyde here, chicken, what you say would
you say?
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I think sports are in the top tier category of
things that could unhinge you because I've seen grown men
in rex softball or pick up basketball look like they're gonna.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Lose their mind. You're like, dude, take a step back.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Road rage another time, you're like, you're driving in the
car and people want to actually they want to kill
someone else they do.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
That's probably the toughest anyone feels like. It's it's even
worse than behind the keyboard, is behind the steering wheel,
because you just lose it.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
Like when people are following each other and then they
end up like getting into a parking lot and get
him into a knife fight or something.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, sometimes going on like your life was just throwing off.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
You ever see these videos guys where you know, two
people are so like hating each other in a parking
lot and someone sorts ramming the other person with their car.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
They're just not even thinking with their brain. They're thinking
with pure impulse and pure emotional rage.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
You know, you saw it not only with the Egyptian coach,
and I'm not making excuses by any means.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
And nowhere near this did you see the Philadelphia Phillies
coach like he had to be held back.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
His belly was flopping out of his jersey and coaching
jacket like dude, right, no, not maddingly one of the
assistant coaches.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
I believe it was the third base coach, Danny g
You know what I'm talking about, right.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, I saw it. I'm gonna look up his name
right now, don't you.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Know his belly was flopping out and in that moment,
I think and he realized, I have to stop.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
My belly is out of my jersey. Yeah, those dudes
just go ballistic. Sometimes it's for show, you know, but
sometimes it's just there's your.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
Favorite, who's your favorite?
Speaker 2 (08:09):
As a kid. Was it Lou Penella as a kid?
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Yeah, of course, Tommy Lesorda.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
We all grew up watching like all these why Can't
We Be Friends compilations and baseball funny side up, and
you'd always see these compilations of managers getting in the
face of umpires, and it would it would always be
to why Can't We Be Friends? And see Billy Martin
Yellen and Neuro Weaver, and you'd see all these classic
(08:33):
Panela highlights. But honestly, since you asked my favorite clip is,
I don't even know who it was. It wasn't Wally Backman.
Was it was some minor league coach who throws like grenades.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Army crawling. Yeah, that's funny, Wally Backman. Wally Backman had
a major minor league meltdown.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah, when you an bats or something. Yeah, and COVI.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
When you added that up with some of his other antics,
A lot of people say that's what prevented Wally Backman
from ever managing in the bigs.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
He just seems a little too under.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, yeah, he's a loose cannon. So I think there's
a lot of validity and truth to some of these
guys just not being able to control themselves. I also
think it's it's coaches. I mean, it is this fact
they're trying to get their teams rallied up and fired up.
So they're looking to get booted just to show that
they care and that the coach has their back. So
it's a little showmanship, it's a little of being a
(09:20):
being unhinged, a little mix of everything. But what get you?
What could push you to that point? Women? Women?
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Women, like I said, bed drivers.
Speaker 6 (09:32):
So being up two oho on the defending World Cup
champions where you should be like a ninety nine odds
to win the game, and you.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Know what, I guess when there's high stakes, you know,
that's that's really interesting you put it that way, Sam,
when you when you put it that way right, it's
every four years there's two hundred and something teams that
are playing right in the World Cup. At one point,
the chances of you winning are slim, and you've got
a chance to beat the defending champions. I guess if
(10:02):
anything's gonna push you over the edge, if you think
you were done dirty and you truly believe in your
heart of hearts that you were I guess that could
make you go ballistic. It's just a matter of what
you're capable of doing, though, Like would you be spitting
on people? I don't know that.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Can I tell you guys a really funny story because
it's I just saw something that it's like wildly funny
that I don't think that you had to be there
type of thing.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
So you know, you've seen guys.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
In REX sports lose their minds, right, Like guys just
fly off the handle. It could be a call from
a softball umpire or you're playing in some you know,
YMCA basketball league.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Someone calls a foul and a grown man just loses
his s right like, ah, like goes insane, I guess
because adrenaline's flowing already, right, and maybe you know what
and added up if your grown men, if your grown
men plays FREX sports, when you assume that if you're
a grown man that plays REX sports, part of that
is your unleashing and you're unloading of all the stuff
going on in life, family, work, this and that. Like
(10:58):
your escape is playing REX Sports.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
So if if you have a bad call on a
day on the same day your boss yell, your wife's
giving you crap, like you can see where a grown
man loses it. Here was a guy in my rex
softball league. I won't call him up because it's probably
a sensitive subject. This guy lost his mind and apparently
was like telling some other guy like I wanna I'm
(11:21):
gonna whoop your ass in the parking lot and started. Honestly,
this guy lost his marbles. He got he got suspended,
like from the field, like for a week. Like listen, man,
that can we you know we're grown men. Cool enough, man,
You're you're suspended for a week, you know, take a break.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
You gotta control yourself. It's clearly anger issues mixed with adrenaline,
rushed with I don't know, maybe childhood issues. I don't know.
I'm sure there's going on if people react that way.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Agreed, But imagine for one minute, your wife is giving
you the hardest time, your boss like told you you're
not getting the rage you want it, and then it
all culminates. You're playing pickup basketball on a gym, right
and the it's a tie game and there's some weak
ass foul called and you lose your mind on a referee.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Yeah, like you're mad. I get it, But it's all
these other things that are exploding at the same time,
and maybe that's part of the reason, or maybe it's
what Sam said before, like the stakes are so high
that if you're just a little unhinged, like the Egyptian coach,
like maybe all your worst just comes out in that moment.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
That issue the stakes, it's the stakes involved.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
But also I think if the stakes aren't high, even
if it's like I said, REX sports or something or.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yeah, and you don't want to justify your rich you
just want to make some sense of it. And we're
not giving any excuses.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Here professional high stakes or there's a lot of grown
men and women that have a lot of stress and
a lot going on in their lives and if they
if they participate in REX sports in the community, we
like I said, the same way, you could lose your
mind that we're stupid traffic jam.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Sometimes you have a breaking point and that's when it breaks.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
So get this.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
This guy gets kicked out of the softball league I'm in.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Yeah, he's so upset about this, like like mad that
he got kicked out.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
He tried to pull a Bobby Valentine.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
He showed up the next week with a big hat
on and like a COVID mask and made it seem like, yeah,
just uh, don't tell him.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
It's me thinking that no one would notice. That's so
stupid man.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
And he got caught again, no doubt again for a week.
So yeah, people, people lose their mind. But this Egyptian
coach no excuse. But we've seen it, like you said,
when you're spitting on fans and crossing the line, that's
one thing. Coaches that are bumping chests with umpires like
that Leslie Nielsen and Nicked Gun. Yeah, here's out, he's safe,
here's out, he's all right, you're out of here, like.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
And if you missed it, it was a hell of
a game, and there was some questionable calls, no doubt,
and I guess you know, when you lose a heartbreaker
like that. It doesn't excuse him from his actions, but
it does explain it a little bit. He was spitting
on fans, he's cursed on everybody. He's fighting photographers and
he's claiming that FIFA this whole thing for the defending
champions Messi and Argentina who fought back and won that game.
(14:06):
And yeah, it's it's unfortunate. You never want you never
want to act the fool. You never want to let
people get under your skin in that way in real life?
What's that saying? Rich, he who angers you controls you.
You never think a right line. Yeah, you never want
to let people see you at your worst. And unfortunately
it happened to him on a really big stage. But
I guess when you factor in the stakes again, not
(14:30):
not that we justify it, but it makes sense, no,
no doubt.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
So now that the World Cup is narrowing down man
less teams involved, Tonight's and night off, like you said,
Morocco's playing tomorrow, MESSI survives to live another day. There's
there's two questions, actually, there's a few questions here. Number one,
what do you what are you doing on these off
nights when when it's only baseball in World Cup? And
(14:54):
wnba oh, I'm sorry, n WWM back Danny G. I'm
with you, Silo. I just wish it was more than
one episode.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Maybe you do some stuff you always put off, like
you clean the baseboards by your floors.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Could I recommend I'm watching this tonight so you could.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
You know the secret to do that? Right? You just
like wear a wet sock and just you know, go
around the I know, I get this.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
I saw the best hack. I'm giving you the Instagram.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yeah, you know, you just put a little wind decks
or something on your wet socks and then just rub
your big toe around the baseboards.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
You're all set. I love the wet toe trick. But
have you seen this com You know you're gonna do
this tonight now that I tell you? Okay, I mean
I feel like people have done this before with sponges
or a towel.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
But there's not. So let's let's make a plan. What
am I doing this the hack?
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Because we're you know, people doing a lot of cookouts
watching the game outside on the patio and the deck.
You know, your dirty ass sliding door or outdoor, you
know doors, say put a wet put a spray, a
whole big paper towel down or to toilet paper. Line
the entry way with toilet paper over spray with cleaner,
then open and close the door a few times. It
(16:00):
gets in every one of those little crappy grooves in
the sliding door, and you're you'd be amazed how disgusting
you are.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Oh, you got to send me the video of this
bad boy so I could follow through it.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
As the kids say, it's oddly satisfied.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
We have a we have a free night to catch
up on something or do something you've been putting off.
So what I recommend?
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Can I recommend the rom com that I even saw
our buddies at barstool. We're saying is like the best
rom com in like twenty years for real, Like if
you want to get if you want to get romantic
with the wife or your girlfriend. Yeah, apparently on Netflix.
Voicemails for Isabelle is like, uh, it's like the modern
day notebook, bro, So we're.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Going to watch a cool stallone movie since his birthday
was out this week?
Speaker 1 (16:40):
No, no, no, no, tonight's rom com now, so you
can get back to everything else tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Yet Demolition Man for my birthday week? Absolutely, it is
day going into hump night yeah, ump action. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Do you want to send tone? You want to set
the tone? You're you gonna watch the long bring some romance?
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Okay? All right? So Fox Sports Radio Nation, no World
Cup for the time long time. What's your plan? And
we got to talk. Well, I don't want to say
old guy stuff because I take a lot of pride
and staying young and spry. Yeah, but uh, let's say
interesting maybe old guy stuff you catch yourself interested in
at an old old guy tendencies. As we all get
(17:17):
older and you start caring about different things, why don't
you grown folks that folk thing that you care about
now that you didn't care about maybe five ten years ago.
That's a real fun one. We'll get to that.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
We'll talk some maybe a little NFL get us ready
for football, because that'll distract us, you know, in less
than a month. And Danny g I don't know if
you saw this based on the World Cup. To wrap
that as we get closer to next Sunday, less than
two weeks until the final game at Met Life in Jersey.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
I mean you're going ahead. Tomorrow's game is pretty dope.
France Morocco is gonna be great.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Tom Brady. Tom Brady said that that messy comeback. He
thinks that that is maybe even more impressive than his
twenty eight to three win against the Falcons.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
And I don't know if Tom Riddy just being nice.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
But Egypt was their chances of winning that game were
over ninety percent at one point. To come back, you know,
and score three goals in that short amount of time
the way they did it, it took perfection and NonStop hartitude.
Is that a word? Hartitude? I like that. Yeah. Yeah.
Even if Egypt let's say say they won this game
but they didn't win the whole World Cup, they would
(18:26):
take away that win over Argentina as like, Wow, what
a consolation prizey, I'm all so proud about that. You
beat Argentina, and you know Argentina's they're not well liked
in a lot of places. Can I just started defending champion?
So what a major victory that would have been?
Speaker 6 (18:40):
Can I tell you something really funny and clever and witty.
I don't know if he came up with this, but
Taylor Hippolis, who's a co host and a producer for
a Stu Goatts, he said FIFA stands for a fix
it for Argentina.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
I don't know if he came out that's fantastic. I
think we're gonna say MESSI blew it opportunity.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
After that third goal, they should have definitely done a
little Bengals walk like an Egyptian and then you know how,
you know how the you know how the team Belgium
started doing the Trump dance.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
They should have started doing a little Bengals the.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Brich is getting ready already for next hour with Big Mike.
You know that's so stupid, bro, Yeah, that's so stupid.
I gotta laugh at that. I could just picture Bessie
just doing it, like yeah, I would run it right.
They wouldn't do that, by the way.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Comno, that's why the coach got so mad. MESSI looked
at me and he was like, Hey, so dumb. That's
so dumb.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
You gotta watch how dumb it is on YouTube as
we speak, YouTube dot com. Slash Covino and Rich FSR
at Covino and Rich FSR.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
Can you know I told you my brother in law
is Moroccan. He's way more rocking than you or me.
He's been to every game and tomorrow we had to
Foxborough for Morocco France. Could Morocco Paul the the upset,
that would be pretty sure.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
I mean Rocksboro they'll be taking over. Yeah, it's gonna
be fun to see, man. I can't wait. Now we'll
get back to soccer. We got to talk Lebron. We
got Mike who runs this take. We don't have to
talk Lebron. We might talk Lebron again, like too, No,
I'm kidding cold Stone. Steve Auston will be here with
just Take who He has a controversial take on Wednesdays
(20:12):
plus Midweek Major with Sam the stories in sports and
pop culture? We decide are they midweek major? But the
big story today this is how slow of the day
it is.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
By the way, Mike's segment should be renamed, like is
he trying to get canceled?
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Right? Yeah? I know. Every week I'm like, what is
he saying? So? And today is worse than ever?
Speaker 7 (20:30):
So it instead of Mike who runs this take, it's
Mike who burns this place?
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, mikeeh burns this place?
Speaker 4 (20:36):
Wait for that about twenty minutes.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
But you know, one of the bigger stories today is
Justin Verlander retiring after what twenty one plus years in
the bigs, the oldest guy in sports. We pointed that
out recently. I did a little AI search because my
girlfriend asked me like a really random question and expected
me to know. I hate when stuff like that happened.
She's like, who's the oldest guy in I'm like, right now, like,
(21:02):
I don't know. Maybe I just think I was like
Aaron Rodgers. I don't know. She's like, how do you
not now? I like, I don't know. It's not like
a I could give you an educated guess, but I'm not.
Hold on, let me think about it.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
You get so, you get mad that she asked you
questions and you're just always close.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
You well, I mean it was Verlander that was the answer. Yeah.
So forty three plus years old, right, danyg. But he's
Owen won this year twelve point two seven ERA with
Detroit and he announced his retirement and based on that,
and again, congrats, you know what, congrats. I admire the Verlanders.
(21:39):
Justin had an amazing career. He was very dominant. He
dominated my Yankees. I hated when he pitched, which means
I think he's great. Even his brother, Ben Verlander, I
think is a great. Verlander does a great job covering
MLB and very likable.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Not only does he have game on the field off
the field, kicking it to Kate Upton during a commercial
for MLB two K twelve, met her there and he's like, hey,
what's up.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I'm Justin Verlander. And at that.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Time, Kate Upton still, you know, beautiful mom and model,
But at that time Kate Upton was like the it
girl and Verlander was the it pitcher, So he made
the move.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
So he's the man. Like I think now we could
acknowledge that if you're a like Astros hater or Tiger's
hater or whatever. Regardless, guy had a stellar career and
my goodness, yeah he did good for himself based on
his retirement announcement. We ended the season. He's gonna go
by the way. Yeah. Yeah, we all catch ourselves again,
(22:38):
we're trying to what are we saying grown what are
we grown folks? Yeah, we all catch ourselves becoming more
interested in grown folks sort of things like my first
indicator of grown folk likings. Well, we're not saying that.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
The reality to you, though, is that all these athletes
that are in retirement mode, the Tom Brady's and Aaron
Rodgers and the Lebrons and verlind there's we're in their
age group. So we're watching guys our age finally hang
it up. And after this, could you know everyone will
be younger.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Than us in sports, which is like, oh man, yeah,
so that's.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
The that's the coming of age, the coming of ages
when the Verlanders and Brady's and Aaron Rodgers and Lebron,
when all these guys hang it up, when if you're
in your forties like us, what happens is that you
are no longer younger than like anyone playing in the league.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Yeah, some grown folk, that's a realization, I guess.
Speaker 7 (23:29):
Yeah, i'd say the terminology old guys because that's still
our grand pappies. Yeah, but the guys our grand dad.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
And we're still the youngest in the game, right, so
we're not trying to say we're old guys, but yeah,
you have a little taste of it. Every just mature now,
to get mature. So one of my grown folks sort
of observations, Rich I still don't even attribute to getting older.
I blame I blame Game of Thrones because all of
a sudden, I really got into subtitles for how many
(23:58):
years now, right.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
As a kid, You're like, who you know, you thought
you were going to say you got into Dungeons and Dragons.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
No, no, no, no, But I think like there was
so much whispering going on in that show, and I
could never hear anything, and I'm like losing focus and track.
You put the subtitles on for that, and I think
I never looked back, and then people would be like,
you watched the subtitles. I'm like, yeah, I read them.
I'm more I'm more invested when I read and know
what's going on. I don't miss anything. It's so funny.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
Lst night we're you know, I'm in Texas, Texas with
you know, Grandma, my wife's family's from here, and some
nieces and nephews. It last night we did a little
movie night with the kids and we throw in one
of the old Minions movies and close capturing was on
and the kids.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
Were like, it takes up the screen?
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Can you turn that like old thing off? I'm like, yeah,
I tell you, yeah, sorry, Yeah, I've grown to love
it in my as I grow, So you know what,
start thinking about those grown folk things that you take
a liking to. As we honor Justin Verlander, man, think
about it and we'll get to your phone calls after. Well,
there he is, the kron has your off date. Ooh,
(25:00):
I love what's up man, guys.
Speaker 8 (25:02):
Justin Verlander with three career no hitters as we speak,
Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays is six outs
away from his second career no hitters.
Speaker 4 (25:13):
I was gonna say seaside no through one before, so yeah,
that's it.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (25:16):
He threw one for the Padres in July of twenty
twenty four at Washington. He has a no hitter going
through seven innings today at San Francisco, as the Blue
Jays have a five to nothing lead over the Giants.
There now in the top of the eighth inning. Here's
the thing, Dylan cees as we speak, one hundred and
six pitches through seven innings. Oh man, it looks like
(25:37):
right now seeing him in the dugout, that he is
going to come out at least to start the eighth inning.
Hopefully the Nerds will not prevail today in San Francisco
and he can have a shot.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Ilo. Uh, will you?
Speaker 1 (25:52):
What was your professional sports take on Uri Perez when
he threw seven perfect innings? So the Marlins the other
day they took him out of the and then within
three pitches, not only that no hitter, perfect game, and
the shutout all gone to three pitches.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
Well, there you have it right there. Anytime the Nerds
get involved with a pending no hitter, Nerds, not only
does the immediate relief pitcher blow the no hitter, but
his team often.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Blows the game.
Speaker 8 (26:22):
Yeah, that blows so I'm all for the nerds and
the analytics and blah blah blah, but when it comes
to a no hitter, don't with a no hitter, if
you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, so we let him go, Let him go.
Speaker 4 (26:34):
Okay, take a get a feel for it, just let
it happen.
Speaker 8 (26:37):
I mean till Linskam threw what was his no hitter,
it was like one hundred and thirty three, one hundred
and thirty four pitches at least, I mean Nolan Ryan's
no hitters.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
I mean, you know, might have been two d pitches.
Speaker 8 (26:50):
Yeah, yeah, I mean we are all of like opinions
when it comes to this.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
Anyway.
Speaker 8 (26:57):
In the NBA today, Lebron James posted a brief video
on his ig Stories of himself at an unnamed golf
course in a golf cart. Ironically, speaking of golf today,
at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, Golden State Warrior
star Steph Curry was asked about Lebron's free agency.
Speaker 9 (27:15):
Say more so, I'm interested to just play golf with Lebron.
We'll handle the basketball stuff, but I want to see
the golf Lebron free agent. He's out here, really grinding
on the game. But I'm sure you know we obviously
would love to play together. We hopefully it happens, but
you know, he's deserved the opportunity in the right to
take his time with the decision.
Speaker 8 (27:36):
Say upgrade your FIFA World Cup twenty twenty six setup.
Build it like Beckham from living room to lawn with
the home depot and take the fast free delivery. Assist
the home Depot Official FIFA World Cup twenty twenty six Supporter,
subject to availability. All's quiet at the World Cup today,
but the quarterfinals kick off tomorrow four pm Eastern between
France and Morocco in Foxborough.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
Guys, thank you, thank you, Loan Chron. By the way
I looked it up, Lindsey come through one hundred and
forty eight pitches in his first no hitter in twenty thirteen.
One hundred and thirteen in a second. Let the dude
go and let up.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
Yeah, that Uri Perez perfect game the other day. That
was infuriating, especially you're a Marlins fan.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
The worst. Let them go and the Chron will give
you the updates. Hey, this is Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 8 (30:44):
Yeah, I've got to call the match winner from me
yesterday by the Argentina radio announcer whose picture I sent
you guys a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
Ago with the hair greatest hair in the game.
Speaker 8 (30:52):
Here's how it sounded, and there's an unusual sound effect
at the end.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Can't nobody now on particulan sight those bed springs? Yeah,
what was that? Isaac? You and I were kind of
(31:36):
theorizing what that might stand for.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
You're a guest because Martine Argentina is getting on tonight
after that.
Speaker 8 (31:41):
That's really when I think it sounds like.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
To be honest, there's going to be a lot of
Argentinians made tonight. Have you seen Messi's wife? I will
he mean you? All right, that's some good stuff. All right,
So back to Land the Rich. I thought of a
few other examples.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
Oh, old guy, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Grown man things, grown folk things that we've taken a
lot to As you know, there's coming of age moments
like justin Verland are retiring today. I mentioned subtitles, right,
And I don't ever say it's because I'm old. I
say because Game of Thrones got me into it. Yeah,
I couldn't hear what they were saying along those seam lines.
I don't take accountability of necessarily getting older because I'm
(32:19):
in denial. Yeah, it's because I think documentary has got
so much better as we got older as time went on.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Dude, I'm obsessed with that American experiment one. I never
thought I would watch her five part documentary.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Yeah, anytime there's a new documentary released, I'm like, ooh, yes,
I get so excited. Where Like I have to justify myself. No, no, No,
they just got way better. It's not that my interests
are like old guys stuff. They're just that much better now.
And I think there's true to that. I think there's
true to that.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
So the grown things you find yourself loving, we'll get
to that, Plus Mike, who runs his take, we'll get
to all that.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
A lot of fun. Hour two coming up right here,
Covin and Rich Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
One of those not old guy, we're calling him grown fellow.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
What are we? Grown folk? Grown folks, grown folks you've
taken a liking to. I've already said some titles. I've
said documentaries, but I say, I feel like they've gotten
a lot better.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
And keep saying. You keep saying subtitles, while that is
what they are.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
Close captioning. You're into close captures subtitles. If it was
like a foreign film.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Both, Yeah, close captioning subtitles. I like them both. The
little C C button, Yeah, I thought, for say, see Sabathia,
I thought he popped up when I pressed it. You know,
I'll give you.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
I'll give you a you know, a a grown guy
reference that I make that every time you record something,
you gotta stop. I find myself using the word tape
once in a while, like did you tape that?
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Oh? Yeah, that's just yeah, that's an old guy mistake.
I can't say that you're not taping anything. Yeah, you're
a kid.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
If you're kid the eighties or nineties, you can't catch
yourself telling your kids like, oh did you tape it?
Speaker 2 (33:54):
Oh did you know? No one tapes anything? Little Rich
I taking things. You know, a lot of my conversations
with you are you know, they're I don't want to say,
like being the dad or dad conversation is a grown
folk thing. But ninety percent of conversations with Rich they
went from like booty cheeks, like chasing booty in the
early two thousands, to like coaching Little League. Right, So
that's been a big difference. Well, I talk about things
(34:16):
I'm good at. I was good at chasing booties. I'm
good at coaching right right. I mean, okay, so I
guess them is the same whatever Rich is good at.
But I feel like you talk a lot about your
your hobbies lately, and a lot of your hobbies are
like grown folk hobbies. I'll give you a couple.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Honestly, Coaching kids is like my biggest interest in the world.
And that's definitely like a middle aged dad thing, like
to me coaching kids. Number one conversation I have Number two.
I care so much about my lawn and flowers it's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Like, honestly, I'm.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Out there every day with the hands on the hips
making sure my grass is looking good and I'm trimming
my flowers. Stuff that I never thought I would care about.
Curb appeal and my garden, like just that's that's my
grown man thing.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
It's an adjustment, it really is, because I'm used to
this guy. He used to be a fake boob expert rich.
He used to tell me all about him all the time.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
And by the way, now I can look at someone
and say, gummy there, silicon, or say now he calls
me up to.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Tell me about his rose garden. I'm not even joking you,
and I'm not saying it's a bad thing.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
It's just some great I just recommended there's a place
on Kvino's balcony where I'm like, the lantanas would look
nice there, like.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
You could grow something that you can have a little
garden here. Hey, I love it's beautiful. Curb appeals is
a wonderful thing, but it's definitely some grown folks. I'll
give you another grown growing.
Speaker 7 (35:33):
In Cove's living room. There's a spot where cage dancers
could go.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
No, he used to I used to have that. Now
I'm grown the.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Diddy g I'm I'm I don't know this. I think
this is like a middle aged dad thing too. I
care very much about my outdoor cooking area, like grilling
and making sure that's set ups nice.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
These are things that.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Like when you're a younger man, you don't care about
your grilling area as much.
Speaker 7 (35:54):
To Our parents used to torture us by bringing us to
places like home Depot for hours and little kids, we're
stuck in there, Like what am I going to do here?
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Now? Rich goes there depot as a hobby.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Yeah, I could walk around home Depot like I walked
down the Strip club in Vegas in the two thousands.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Hey, looking around at all the things I want? We
got Coldstone, Steve Austin here, he has something to say
about this. You know what gets me? Mike has grown,
so he's perfect for this compash.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
Well, yeah, I've been doing stupid grown man stuff for
a long time. It's been a long time since I've
been close to the age of a professional athlete. But
getting up early in the morning, that's something that as
an old guy, I'm so much more enjoying than when
I was a younger man.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
I forget it.
Speaker 5 (36:39):
Man, I'm sleeping until noon all day every day.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
And he Mike watch out and gets his newspaper at
five am. Yeah, early, and you appreciate how long the
day feel like a sunrise to me is just He's
part of it.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
Is part of that, Mike, Like, you just can't sleep
well as you get older, and you're like, I sleep great.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
So you're gonna tell me this is going a couple
of time in my future. We're waking up to film
for Aan Patrick, Is is it?
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Like? Oh maybe if that's true, that's great news.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
Maybe yeah, yeah, my dad goes to bet at Like
my dad goes to bed at like eight pm and
he wakes up at like five am. Like I'm like,
it's I don't get it, but maybe it's an old
guy thing.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
That's what I I was saying.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
I worked at a cards and gift store in high school,
like a Hallmark store where they sell you know, I
sold cigarettes and lottery tickets to like senior citizens.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
That was essentially.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
My my high school gig right in Cavino, when I
tell you I'd get there as a seventeen year old
like miserable at six in the morning. There was a
line of old people waiting like like cank of a newspaper,
my daily numbers and my lucky strikes like it was, Yeah,
I guess when you get older, your your clock shifts, right.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Yeah, but we're not saying old, They're just saying grown,
all right. Grown. Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox
is the number eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox
to chime in again, it's the Verlander tribute. He's forty
three plus. He was the oldest guy in sports. He
announced his retirement. Twenty one plus years in the league.
He had two hundred and sixty six wins, one hundred
and fifty nine losses, a career era of three three
(38:05):
three of three point three three.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
So just just more proof that with the world of
five six inning starts and you know, just a different
game of baseball, the fact that Verlands there's not a
three hundred game winner just proves that we're never going
to see one again.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
M most likely not No, so based on Verlander, the
grown folks stuff you've been taking the liking to as
time goes out. Oh, most likely not.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
I'm not trying to sway the conversation, but I would
say absolutely not, because if a guy like Paul Skins
or Schooble can't ever get the twenty just based on
the way the game is, then.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
Who's I can never say never, But yeah, I mean
it looks that way. For sure. It looks that way.
You know what can I tell you? The first time
I realized that my buddies were getting a little more grown.
It doesn't really go with this conversation, but was really
it was like a life changing moment. I'll never forget it.
I never shared this on Fox Sports Radio. Oh boy,
my buddy Barry, who he called Barnando because he loved
(38:55):
Hispanic women. So he's like, Bro, can you call me
Barnando around the Hispanic Chicks? True story? True story. So
his name is Barry, but we called him Barnando. I
would call him up all the time, like, man, you
see the Yankees tonight, dude? Oh man, you see that
cheeter bro at that play? You know, you having just
regular young guy conversations. One time I called him up
(39:16):
and I was like, dude, man, did you see I'll fall?
So sorry? No, bro, and all right, I forget maybe Robbie.
It might have been Robbie Canoe. Dude, you see Robbie Cano.
Oh boy? He says this. I'm not even kidding. He's like, Bro,
can I call you back?
Speaker 9 (39:29):
Bro?
Speaker 2 (39:29):
I was like, why, man? You watching the game? He goes,
I'm busy. I'm like, busy doing what? Because I'm soaking
my ryds. I was like, I'm sorry, what because soaking
my roids? Bro? I'm like, what do you do? Are
you taking a bath? What do you mean? And then
I just like I hung up the phone and I
was like, That's when I knew life was changing. That
was the key moment that I knew, like my youth
(39:51):
was was slipping and life was changing and conversations would
never be the same again.
Speaker 4 (39:56):
When your first friend got him road's good, It's good, good,
good one weird.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
I've never had a problem continuing a phone conversation while
I'm soaking my royds. I'm just saying, you talk on
the phone moment.
Speaker 7 (40:16):
It's kind of in line with the one I was
going to say. And I think Verlanders probably experienced it
this season. He said in his letter that this year
has been challenging for him. He's got how about when
you make loud noises when you get up where you
sit down, and.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
You're like, oh, you know what, we gotta that ties
into lander. We gotta stay on track because that's old
guy stuff. We're talking grown folks, stuff that you enjoy.
You enjoy it. I got a few.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
I want to add a few more to the list,
and we'll take your feedback and then we'll get to
Mike's hot take.
Speaker 4 (40:47):
That's gonna burn down the place.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Okay, is it weird that I'm I'm leaning towards like
I might investigate pickleball?
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Nah? Yeah, I mean I get it. I get it.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
How about this one? My interest in ancestry has gone up.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
That's a good one. Yeah, that's some girling, folks. I'm like,
your interested in short seave button downs too? Like I
noticed that lately. Can we go back real quick to
soaking the roids? Oh Sama wants to chime in.
Speaker 6 (41:16):
I'll be forty in October, and like I'm already thinking
all the time about inflammation and how to reduce inflammation.
I'm like, damn, I soriyana arthritis because I suffer from
that and it sucks, and I'm like, Okay, what can
I do to reduce cut down on this.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
I'll give you. I'll give you Barnando's number. You guys
could talk about it.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
You're gonna You're gonna be forty. We got a couple
a couple of years on you.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
A couple of years back, when I was around your age,
Cavino will back me up.
Speaker 4 (41:42):
I would bitch and complain. It was the first time
I got plantar fasciotis on my foot and I started
ripping out.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Talking about it non stop.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
Oh well, you know what, Danny, because my foot was
killed me. Thank on, My feet are fine now. But
I remember being like, is this what happens when you
turn forty? And I remember I was open out, like
Brooks and Hokahs and all these comfort shoes. I was
like putting aside by Jordan's I would say, comfort shooes.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
The tie in is like you're choosing comfort and like
and appreciating it over like function over fashion kind of right,
like it's just some rock ports. Yeah yeah, Rich is like, yeah,
you know, maybe rock parts are a good idea rock
ports are good idea quality shoes quality shoe.
Speaker 8 (42:21):
Here, Hey guys, just to report Dylan cees his no
hit bid broken up. Elliott Ramos singled to lead off
the ninth but at least they sent him out there
to try for it.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Robs our radio show's fault for mentioning it any more.
Rich grown folks stuff that you're into. Hey, I love.
Do you have any grown folks things I feel like?
I low? Probably like bird watching or something. I low?
What's up? What's what's the what's.
Speaker 4 (42:46):
The As you get older you find yourself enjoying.
Speaker 8 (42:48):
How do you know about the bird watching thing?
Speaker 2 (42:50):
You know this because he does cron watching On the side, do.
Speaker 8 (42:54):
You know that Ian Fleming got the name for James
Bond after a famous ornethologist named James Bond. By the way,
but on the other side of big mics, I enjoy
not only getting up early, but going to bed early.
We go to bed at nine pm.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
Can you believe that?
Speaker 9 (43:12):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (43:12):
Yeah, you get a discount early bird special.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
D G is the as the joke goes, Uh, the
time you used to leave for the club, you want
to be in bed by that time.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Now you know what I enjoy that seems to be
like an old lady sort of thing, not to be
sexist an agist, but like walks, even a walk around
the mall once in a while, like you know, walks
or I really appreciate them, though in a different way though, Sam,
you know, like I think because you carry five pound
weights while you do it. Yeah, yeah, with my but
(43:47):
increasing student mall pace. Yeah, powerwalk. So anyway, what are
some more grown folk things you catch yourself enjoying as
we pay tribute to Verlander? You can chime in at
Covino and Rich at Fox Sports Radio. Now, while you're
on social media, there's an account on X called Mike
who runs this? Who? Yeah, Mike, that's his ex account,
(44:07):
that's his Twitter at Mike who runs this? And every
Wednesday he comes in and he has a take. So
let's get into it. Produced the Microphone Assassin. It's time
for Mike who runs this take? Who?
Speaker 7 (44:19):
Big Mike may get to be in charge of the segment,
but he still doesn't run this place.
Speaker 9 (44:22):
He really doesn't even run this segment when you think
about it, because this Mike can be turned off by
Sam at any moment.
Speaker 11 (44:28):
That may be true, but Big Mike does get to
pick the topic and then CNR offer there's strong opinions
on it. Consider it a warm up to Midweek Major
Mike who runs this take?
Speaker 2 (44:39):
Who? Mike? Also? People, what up? Mike Coldstone? Steve Austin Coldstone?
Mike is here and if you want to see why
we call him that, just chime in on YouTube now
at Covino and Rich FSR.
Speaker 5 (44:51):
What's going on, buddy? You start calling me old Stone, old.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Stone Stone, that's old old Stone.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
There is.
Speaker 2 (44:59):
Giving yourself if your own nickname.
Speaker 6 (45:00):
Yeah, No, Mike's got Mike's beard is thicker than Stone Cold's.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
It's like he's much fuller.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
I'm working on my growing I'm working on my Santa beard.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
Yeah yeah, he was kind of little guy. Oh yeah,
you are growing it out. I notice that. All right?
Speaker 5 (45:13):
So today on Mike who runs this take, we are
talking about affecting an accent. You guys, you guys have
any good accents that you guys can do?
Speaker 2 (45:24):
Are you? You know? I know?
Speaker 5 (45:25):
We got we got Irish Sam everybody.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
Irish time he's here, He's here forever? Is it?
Speaker 4 (45:31):
By the way, isn't it weird how you could do
some but some you just can't do anymore.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
Yeah, well I was. I was gonna say, I built
the first half of my career on making on doing
accents that I think are are not allowed anymore. I
don't know, right, Yeah, how would your dad see it?
You got anything?
Speaker 8 (45:47):
Not really an accent, but more impressions than accent.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
And I'm not really.
Speaker 5 (45:51):
Talking about impressions because that's that's a separate issue entirely.
If you're doing like I'm talking more about, like somebody
who is on in a movie, right and you know
they're not they're not, They're an English actor but there,
but they're doing an American accent.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
I'll give me examples for you. Oh good, go ahead,
I want that. Just Sam Straw to the other day.
You want to hear me? Have Sam? I know that?
Show you what anywhere?
Speaker 5 (46:22):
Mary Poppy, Yeah, that's one of the most famous ever
did Van Dyke Poppins h And another one that's this
one is, well, this one's terrible.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Go lightly once again, I must have broke that. If
you don't stop it up on the gravel right this minute,
I'm going to go and fight The problem is that
Mickey the better That is Mickey Rooney from breakfast at
tip Unios.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
Yeah, Mike, I thought he I thought he moved past
the old guy topic. Right, But Mary Poppins and Mickey Rooney,
I want to hear it.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
What do you got? What do you got?
Speaker 5 (46:58):
Richie said you had one that just in your head
On Netflix.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
I just watched that really cool uh show called I
Will Find You with the guys in prison for Life
because they think he killed the son, but his sons
still alive. Sam Worthington, I didn't realize that main guy
is British and he does like an American accent. I
did not realize that guy was either British or Australian.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
Happens so often all the time today's movies. And I'll
give you one.
Speaker 5 (47:24):
Mike Margot Robbie Margat Robbie is Australian and she plays
you know, what's your name? On the DC films so
many English character Barb Barbie, Yeah, suicide Squad and also
in Wolf of Wall Street?
Speaker 2 (47:41):
Isn't she an American Wolf of All Street? Mike Margat
Robbi could speak in any accent.
Speaker 1 (47:48):
Well, I'll give you one that Shock Covino night, maybe
about a decade ago, because we've been doing this for
a minute together.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
I remember, I don't know how I didn't know this.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
I should have from the movie Love actually, but I
forgot maybe leading up to the but when The Walking
Dead was his HoTT as could be. It was the
hottest show on television. We had Andrew Lincoln on the show,
Rick Grimes, and I should have remembered, Oh, yeah, he's
in you know, he's in love actually, and he's a
British actor. He comes in and I'm picturing Rick Grimes
from Atlanta, you know, Grimey Zombie show, and he's the
(48:17):
most British you could get.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
He's like, I Hello, Covin Blox'm like what and then
he told the stories like he's so English. This is
the truth. He's so English. English. Actually, I'm English. He's
so English that Ian Anderson the lead singer of jeth
Roel Tall. Ian Anderson's his father in law. And I
was like, what's yeah, So he's like, weigh English. And
(48:40):
that happens all the time, Rich all the time where
you think these are American actors, but they're not.
Speaker 5 (48:46):
So my take for today and it comes to the accents,
is specifically, that's the only time it's appropriate to affect
an accent is if you are in a movie, on television,
doing entertainment, stand up comedy. These are the things if
you are a professional, much like my take on plastic
(49:06):
surgery that I had a few weeks ago. Right, if
you are getting paid, if it is part of earning
your living, I am okay with it as long as
it's not offensive. And that's that's the rub, because the
truth is, if you are trying to do it respectfully
and getting paid for it, it's okay. It's understandable. But
(49:27):
if you're just doing it with your buddies to get
a laugh, believe it or not, whether you like it
or not, it's mildly offensive and could be seriously offensive.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
It's been a call. I just want.
Speaker 5 (49:40):
Everybody to stop, okay, And here's reason number two why
you should stop. Okay, And this is the most important reason.
Your accent is terrible. Nobody wants to hear it.
Speaker 2 (49:50):
I promise it's awful, Mike, I have a question. It
is awful. Nobody wants to hear it.
Speaker 4 (49:55):
But Mike, what if you hear I have a couple
of rubs here. I think I have some caveat.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
I'm ready to answer questions. Hey, it's his take eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox. You have any thoughts,
And by the way, big Poppy trivia coming up? Yeah,
I wonder how about that? But that's funny.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
You should say the Big Poppy or the Tyson or Mahomes.
I think impressions or accents in the in the form
of comedy, if your natural ethnicity lines up, if you're
part Irish or part Mexican or part Italian, or if
you if your heritage is at all a little bit
of that background, I think the free passes there is
to exaggerate it. But I don't think you could be
(50:31):
doing an accent if you have no heritage in that Pete.
Speaker 5 (50:35):
Holmes, you think Mickey Rooney was out of line there.
Speaker 2 (50:38):
At different time, different time, in different place.
Speaker 1 (50:40):
But what about like the other one was like Hank
Azaria on The Simpsons. There was a whole documentary about
how he regrets doing a pu and everyone thought they
could do an Indian guy accent back in the day.
Every zany morning show, rock or pop music everyone thought,
But there is a double st guy accent was funny.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
There is a double standard, and it's a simple one.
And I'm sure there's a valid reason. But Pete Holmes,
the comedian who we've had on the show before, he
does this whole bit, and like how we can't really
do accents anymore, even as a comedian. He feels awkward
about doing them, and he should. But for some reason,
we all could do talking about Italian people a pizza, babe,
(51:21):
So why is that okay? What I'm saying is it's
not right. It's absolutely not okay. Well then if it's
not right, then pizza ba you've done. That's a pizza
that's a Pete Holmes thing. I knew this was coming,
then it should stay standing across the board, is what
you're saying. Right, But Mike, based on.
Speaker 1 (51:42):
What you're saying though, right, Like, I'm I'm a little
bit Italian, Cavenos half Italian, that's fair game.
Speaker 4 (51:48):
Irish Irish, Sam, I.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
I am a little bit Irish, and we bitch a coarser,
I think, I think.
Speaker 5 (51:54):
But what you're doing is you are using somebody's characteristics
as humor. Yeah, they become funny through no fault of
their own celebration. How are you give the world making No,
you're making fun of.
Speaker 2 (52:10):
Them, celebrating the great celebratin.
Speaker 5 (52:12):
You're celebrating, but who gets to decide whether it's a celebration.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
Whether it's rub on it? And I think, you know,
we do have to evolve, we learn, and we grow
and all this stuff. But in the early two thousands,
when rich and I were building our career, uh, we
took a lot of pride in being inclusive and diverse
and welcoming everybody. And I grew up with lots of
different friends of different ethnicities, and I think we all
did right. So a lot of times I'd incorporate these
(52:38):
accents which I wouldn't do today, but I did it then,
and I was getting the last from the people talking
about and that was sort of my goal, Like I'm
trying to make, uh, this person from that culture laugh.
I'm trying to identify with this person from that culture
because I grew up with kids like that, so I'm
trying to make them laugh. And if I made them
laugh and I got their approval, I feel like my
character description in that story I was telling was valid
(53:01):
and was funny, and I was winning people over that way.
Because we used to build camaraderie by poking at each
other and having fun. It wasn't making fun. It was
having fun.
Speaker 3 (53:11):
And together celebrate your differences, right like I had Portuguese.
Speaker 5 (53:17):
Just what Covi is saying right here, because while for
you it was all fun.
Speaker 2 (53:22):
Yeah, they're going to make the Indian guy laugh. In
other words, right.
Speaker 5 (53:25):
Guess what, maybe that Indian guy is only laughing because
he feels uncomfortable because everybody else is laughing and.
Speaker 2 (53:31):
He has to laugh intent matter otherwise. I'm trying to
be his friend in that moment. And again it was
a different time. I wouldn't do it now because times
have changed. But I don't think to piggyback your thought,
and I think it's a great one. I don't think
we should ever be criticized or chastised for the things
we did then. You know, I think to do it now,
you're taking a risk because we have learned, and maybe
(53:52):
Mike is making a really solid point. But to go
back and yeah, well you guys were doing then. Know
what I was doing then was trying to make that
Asian dude laugh. What I was trying to do then
was make that Mexican dude lack. Of course, nobody like Mike.
Speaker 1 (54:07):
If Covino was telling a really funny story, Cavino was
like the king of impressions and still.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
Is just can't do it. I just can't do them.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Like when we let's say, Cavino's telling a funny story
about a friend he went to high school with a
foreign exchange to a student from Japan.
Speaker 4 (54:23):
Carino's doing an Asian accent.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
Yeah, nowadays offensive, but I remember we'd go to live
events and Asian listeners would be like, Yo, Cavino, when
you do your Gordon Lee impression or whatever that kid
you went to high school with, Yo, that's so funny, dude,
Like I think, if you are doing it, it's an intent.
Was always some people's intent was to insult or be little.
Other people's intent was to just tell a good story.
Speaker 2 (54:49):
We'll take a few quick phone calls and then we
got midweek major coming up. But Mike runs his take
was here saying that hey, accents maybe were fun at
one point, but nowadays just across the board should be
eliminated because they're never good. They're just not fun.
Speaker 1 (55:06):
Tent intent is what it's all about. But I don't know, man,
So let's go to your feedback.
Speaker 2 (55:11):
Let's do it.
Speaker 7 (55:12):
Yeah, let's see what our callers think We'll start with
josh on Edward's Air Force bace.
Speaker 2 (55:16):
Hey, what's up, josh ay Man.
Speaker 12 (55:18):
What's going on? I agree with Mike one hundred percent
that you shouldn't try to imitate anything like that for
the intent to try to humiliate someone or anything like that.
But I do have a quick Andrew Lincoln story.
Speaker 2 (55:34):
At five times Sure make it snappy.
Speaker 12 (55:36):
Yeah, I was on YEP. I was in twenty fourteen.
I was going from LA to Atlanta. As you know,
they film Walking Dead there and when they called on
first class, Andrew Lincoln walks by, and I was like, Oh,
it's cool, I want to fly. Were with rhymes. When
we get closer to Atlanta finally comes on, it's like, oh,
we're experiencing. We may experience some turbulence because there's a
bad thunderstorm going on. As we get closer. The worst
(55:57):
turbulence I've ever felt on an air in my life.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
The worst.
Speaker 12 (56:01):
People are screaming, babies are crying, people are praying. I
was like, man, we're not going to make it out
of this. We diverted to Alabama. Everything was safe, but
I thought Walking Dad might come to an.
Speaker 1 (56:11):
End there, Like, hey, not only am I gone, so
was a great show.
Speaker 2 (56:18):
Interestingly, enough about that, that is the worst. But I'm sorry.
Thanks for to call man.
Speaker 1 (56:22):
Our buddy Rob Baker, who's listening down here in Texas
on our affiliate, San Antonio said, Mike Man, this guy
sounds like it's a dark cloud over's head.
Speaker 4 (56:30):
So many of the impressions were done for fun. Really,
I mean, it's just if it's done to humiliate or
make fun, that's one thing.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
But sometimes a good impression is a good impression. I
get why you can't do them anymore, but it really
is about intent, Camino.
Speaker 2 (56:44):
And you know, maybe trying to our justification back in
the day as storytellers on the radio is a character description, yeah,
and trying to make it relatable and funny. Never to
it's sault, Yeah, to paint the picture and to make
those people we were talking about also laugh in the moment,
like you know, like assuming they're part of it. Who
(57:05):
else do we got, Danny g let's go to Trip
in Vegas? Hey, what's up? Trip? But you know what,
it's a different time now, what up trip? Hey? Jole?
Speaker 12 (57:12):
Hey Rich, I'll like that bourbon selection behind you in
the background there.
Speaker 8 (57:17):
I have no idea that Mike days.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
But I do agree with him. And here's my example.
Speaker 12 (57:22):
Imagine I mean in this day and age, but imagine this.
Imagine like imitating a deaf person. That's no different than
imitating an accent. And that's got to be upsetting to
them if they knew what you were saying.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
Yeah, I mean that's true.
Speaker 4 (57:33):
We realized that were insensitive on certain things back in
the day.
Speaker 2 (57:37):
But yeah, you live, you learn right. I mean times
have changed, and you know, so many younger generations they
did get some things right. For sure.
Speaker 7 (57:45):
I've never heard someone do an impersonation and I thought,
how dare they really?
Speaker 2 (57:50):
No? No, because if it's just for fun, you know
what I mean? You, but did they put? The intent
is not to humiliate them, that's not the end.
Speaker 6 (58:00):
No one's ever been offended by Irish sam I just
like people have messaged me to say they enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (58:05):
They're like, no, you should never.
Speaker 7 (58:06):
And that's why I think the mass, the majority of
people will do an Italian impersonation because Covino. Have you
ever been like, oh my god, I can't believe he
did an Italian guy.
Speaker 2 (58:17):
No, That's why I was going to give a double standards.
Some of them are just like so accepted for whatever reason.
Speaker 1 (58:22):
But it's also based on what groups of people that
have been marginalized over the years.
Speaker 2 (58:27):
That's the truth, right, I mean should be.
Speaker 7 (58:28):
IOE should just be like we could do an impersonation
of all ethnicities.
Speaker 2 (58:33):
Hey, Rich, I guess you have to retire that weak
ass Australian joke, Australian accent joke. You always tell.
Speaker 1 (58:39):
That's not true Australians up for grabs. That's a say
rise up lights, and it sounds like you're saying razor blades,
Rise up.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
I'm so offended. Rise up lights.
Speaker 4 (58:49):
Hey Sam, Rise up lights?
Speaker 2 (58:53):
All right, so the rest of your phone calls Light
up next. Plus Sam has midweek major right here on
Fox Sports Radio Now. Tomorrow we'll discuss France and Morocco,
more World Cup and maybe some Lebron because we didn't
get to it today. But we also do old school
and fifty hits. We throw it back with a throwback
(59:14):
conversation every Thursday. So join us Covino and Rich and

let's wrap with Midweek Major. Oh yeah, oh my.
Speaker 11 (59:30):
God, Covino and Rich get you over the middle of
the week where mid Week Major Major. I love that
we throw sports and pop culture headlines and topics at
the fellas and it's like the kids.
Speaker 12 (59:45):
Say, that's summit.
Speaker 11 (59:46):
We definitely feature see it our score mid Week Major.
Speaker 2 (59:52):
Yeah, I gotta go quick here to give Iowa.
Speaker 7 (59:54):
Sam at four and a half minutes, would you care
about them?
Speaker 2 (59:57):
COVID was in such a flow. Lights are light. Our
show's been a flow. Coveno really quick call heads or
tails in the air? Tail bro always tay it's heads.
Rich actually wins it gets to have first take.
Speaker 7 (01:00:10):
And now the most famous person besides Brian bella bweezer
from Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa Sam.
Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
All right, well what's up? Sammy? Move quickly here? All right? Guys.
Speaker 6 (01:00:19):
Former MMA fighter in UFC champ Connor McGregor will return
to the octagon this weekend for the first time.
Speaker 2 (01:00:24):
In five years.
Speaker 6 (01:00:25):
He'll be fighting as a welterweight against Max Holloway in
a non title headliner as part of UFC three, twenty
nine on Saturday in Vegas. Leading up to the fight,
McGregor told ESPN quote, I have many things I have
taken into this camp that have been fueled to my fire.
One the greatest featherweight of all time, this ranking system
of the greatest featherweights. I've beaten these men, but I'm
not on the list. How have I beaten these men
(01:00:46):
easily and handedly and been kept from the list.
Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
He later went on to.
Speaker 6 (01:00:50):
Say, real quick, then he's the best featherweight since Bruce Lee,
and he will showcase that in Saturday's fight. Connor McGregor
back in the octagon with a lot of self praise, praise, midweaker, major.
Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
Major, I was, Sam.
Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
I mean, the UFC is lacking big names like Connor McGregor. Now,
I know you don't want to go to the well
and bring back the oldies, but Connor McGregor will get
people to watch this weekend where I'll be honest, Unfortunately,
out of the younger, more established peeps, well not so Cad.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
You know, I'm all for it. I'm excited to see
what he could bringing. It would have been major if
Sam did his Irish Sam accent went talking about it,
but I didn't feel it was appropriate this time. You know,
McGregor is a big time star and a big time name,
but I just think that he's been out of the
ring so long that it's almost impossible for him to
come in there and look great.
Speaker 4 (01:01:35):
You know, he's not a Gina Carano situation where he
gets you know, they're.
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
Going to be let down. Man. Ring rust is real,
he's older, the fight's a non title fight. So look,
if he's really committed and proves us wrong, then great.
But right now it's.
Speaker 6 (01:01:49):
Mid mid there's the mid all right, pressing on here,
major name, mid story, very good, grown folk thing here,
turning things down, turning down events. Grown folk don't have
as much fomo maybe as the only people. Charles Barkley
recently revealed that he turned down a Swift Kelsey wedding
invite so he could.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Quote hang out and play some golf.
Speaker 6 (01:02:09):
Barkley told ninety seven point five The Fanatic, it's unfiltered
with Ricky Bow and Bill Cola Rulo. I don't go
to weddings or funerals. And he declined the wedding invite. Uh,
declining the wedding invite for the I can't even talk.
This show's very said last Jesus Charles Barkley turning down
(01:02:30):
the Kelsey Swift wedding Midbeaker major recut so.
Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
Much to recut the segment and put it side by
side with the excited Southerner.
Speaker 6 (01:02:37):
Remember Adam Sandler clustered, Sam gives you the new This
show's been an absolute whirlwind.
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
All right, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (01:02:44):
It's major because it was the biggest wedding in the
United States in like decades far as celebrities go.
Speaker 2 (01:02:50):
And Charles Barkley's like, yeah, I run the golf and
not hang.
Speaker 1 (01:02:53):
That's pretty funny because listen, I heard Greg Olson tell
a story how I was like, yeah, it was.
Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
Just wild to be there.
Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
He said, he left the bathroom and he's like, someone
can complement in my hat, and that someone was Tom Cruise.
He said, it was just a really wild, cool event
to be at. But you know what, when you've been there,
done that, you're sir Charles. You could pass on these things.
So I think it's major oligus of how big the
event was.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
You know what. I also think it's major because so
many people got invited. There were stories of people not
getting invited, and funny to hear that Charles Barkley got
an invite. It didn't go like there were so many
people that would have died to have gone or been
part of that. And he was like, nah, I'm good
because he doesn't do weddings or funerals like that. Excuse
(01:03:36):
in itself is great, So I said, he appreciated it.
I think it's a major story. It's just funny to
see the lives these guys live. All right, guys.
Speaker 6 (01:03:44):
People have been clamoring for this online. They want me
to do the final story in my Irish sam accent.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
So here you go and.
Speaker 6 (01:03:50):
Will be staying with thee Travis and Taylor Wedding of
the century. We're seeing reports of trash refuse from the
Swift Kelsey wedding being sold online and air what we
breathed from MSG being bottled and sold for almost fifty
thousand dollars Air from MSG and trash midweek or major.
Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
This is the mid most mid story, but it's matrix
to show you what is the old expression, could we
know someone's trash could be someone else's treasure. What they're
doing is they're taking like dirty plates and remnants and
things from the wedding and packaging them like this was
from Taylor and Travis's wedding, and maniac superfans are buying
trash from the wedding as a souvenir.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
Yeah, it's a weak story. We got to be better
than this.
Speaker 4 (01:04:35):
But then again, hold on, is it any worse when
grown men buy like a game.
Speaker 2 (01:04:40):
Worn shoe of an athlete? Yeah, because the guy probably
gives it to you, or you know, it was meant
to be given or sold or to be had by
a collector. People are going through trash to get this stuff.
I'm wondering does this say like Travis and Taylor's wedding
on the plates? Like, is there anything of significance that
