(00:45):
we're talking Klay Thompson. We're gonna get the prizes and
giveaways and fireworks and more. But Klay Thompson right now.
As you know, Michael Thompson, his dad, long time color
commentator for the Lakers, played for the Showtime Lakers from
eighty seven to ninety one, won two NBA championships in

(01:07):
that span. Michael Thompson, for the most part, is a Laker, right,
I mean, he's known for being a Lakers, so he's
disappointed when Clay chooses the Mavericks. But now he's on
serious x sim Our other stomping grounds are old stomping grounds,
saying that he was really disappointed, as you can assess

(01:30):
that he chose the Mavericks over the Lakers. He says,
it was close, came down to the Lakers and the MAVs.
With the MAVs went out, you know him, he was
hoping and praying he'd finish his career where he played
with the Lakers. And I feel like that's a lot
of pressure for a parent to put on a kid.
He does say in the same breath, he's a grown man,

(01:51):
thirty four years of age, just like we were thirty
four a one time, and our fathers used to give
us advice, and you know, we would choose our own
path and that's fine. That's what life is supposed to
be about. So he's saying in one breath, Look, yeah,
he's a veteran. He's played in the league as his
twelfth season or whatever, over ten years, thirty four years old.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
He's his old man, makes his own decisions.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
But I'm really disappointed he didn't listen to me and
finish out with the Lakers. I'm sure Klay Thompson had
a bunch of reasons as to why he chose the Mavericks,
So maybe he's not even just letting us know about.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
If I can jump in as the Lakers fan on
the show, The Lakers, honestly, yeah, they need some players
to sign, not Klay Thompson. Though he's a shooter and
he wasn't doing that very well at the end of
last season, but yeah, he might still have something left
in the tank, especially with a new team. The Lakers
need size. They were looking for help at center.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I think they need size in youth too. No youth
as well.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Well, they got that in the draft obviously with Connect
true and he's a shooter. They need size so that
Ad can play more forward. So I think Laker fans
have been looking at that as well as a youth movement.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
Yeah, Lakers could use Like you said, they got Connect,
but if they got Clay, and Clay was sort of
back to a little bit of the old Clay and
a big man. If they got one more shooter and
a big man, then the Lakers are talking about competing
if he asked me. And right now I'm reading more
of the quotes from Michael Thompson Covino. He said, listen,

(03:27):
I tried to sell them on the Lakers. Obviously, I
tried to sell it. Obviously, the right thing for me
to do is to try to bring him to LA.
I felt like it was the correct thing for me
because I really believe in the franchise. The franchise has
been so good to me and my family, including Clay.
He grew up a Lakers fan, idolizing Kobe, so he
rarely laid it on Thick. So I ask you, big

(03:48):
decisions in your life, little decisions in your life, how
much do you care or I guess you would say
take your parents' words into consideration if you're kid, if
you're buying a house, if you're dating someone new. Like,
I have a question, do you think most people tell
their parents before they get engaged? Like, yeah, Dad, I'm

(04:11):
gonna pop the question.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Well, look, I'm saying yes, But I am the same
guy that called my dad in the middle of the
night to tell to tell him I got married in Vegas.
He's like, you what, And I'm like, just let mom know.
I know she's gonna be extremely disappointed, though, but they
had seen, they had met her. Yeah, I was already dad,
but I didn't tell them. I just did it right.

(04:33):
But I do think that your parents deserve that respect.
I'm not saying you need to listen to what they
say or do what they say, but you should factor
in their opinions. They've lived it, they've done it, they
have experience in life. They're your parents now. Rich and
I here's why I said we're gonna agree and disagree.

(04:55):
I think we both agree that Michael Thompson put a
lot of pressure on Clay top the fact that he's
coming out publicly saying he's really disappointed in his son's decision,
which wasn't a hard one, I mean, which was a
hard one to make.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
I don't know that rubs me a weird way.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I do respect Michael Thompson's honesty here, but I think
all his son wants is some support. So I think
you and I agree on this whole. Michael Thompson's reaction
to Klay Thompson. That's a little oof, right. Oh yeah,
we agree there, But I think where we disagree, and

(05:31):
this is where we take your phone calls at eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox. Where we disagree is
Rich doesn't run anything by his folks. Rich has this
attitude of he's his own man, who cares. He's not
a little boy anymore. And call me a man boy,
call me a mama's boy. Another Sandler film. Oh yeah,
mama whole, not as grandma's boy. Call me grandma's boy.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, every decision you mentioned before was a major life decision,
or like a big decision. I'm not calling my mom
at the grocery store. Should I get cocoa or fruity pebbles. No,
that's not it. But you talked about, you know, before
you get married, before you purchase a home, before you

(06:14):
name your child. You mentioned these are all big decisions.
Why wouldn't you run it by You're not asking them
for their permission, You're just running it by them. Discussing things.
You're not always gonna get the great feedback that you want.
I remember my mom telling me I'm not I don't
want to call anybody out, All right, fine, I will.

(06:38):
I remember calling them out. Hey, Mom, I'm thinking about
naming my daughter Ava at the time.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I don't know, maybe that was a hot name. Ava.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
She was like, Ava, that's an ugly person's name, and
she was more, she was more playton than that dude.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
She went off, that's the worst name ever.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Man.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
I probably should have kept it myself, because now she
ruined it. And I ended up not naming my daughter
everybody because she ruined it for me, and I chose Melody.
And after that, I didn't tell her because I'm like,
you know what, I'm not even gonna tell her what
I would name my kid because she's gonna ruin it
for me and I'm just gonna do my own thing.
And I named her Melody as a result. So I
get the fact. I get the idea of making your

(07:20):
own decisions. What I don't get is how you don't
run some of these things by your parents just in
conversation if you're lucky enough to still have them around,
because I bet you anything, people who don't have their
parents around would give everything they have just to have
that one conversation about those major life decisions. Hey, I'm

(07:41):
thinking about getting a divorce. Hey, I'm thinking about, like
I said, even getting a new car. Those are just
things you run by your parents because they're your parents,
and Rich does not vibe into that at all.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
And what age did that stop? Though? Did I did
it ever start?

Speaker 5 (07:56):
I think from I don't know about you, Kabino. I
felt like once I was out of college and working
as much as I respect my parents, and I talked
to my dad a couple of times a week. You know,
I have a great relationship with my dad in a way.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Rich, I don't know how much you do.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
You buy a new car and you forget to tell
your dad On my way home, my family probably the
top people I'm calling, Yo, Yeah, sweet new ride.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
It kind of deals togein.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
I would even call my dad maybe before I signed
the deal, like here's the deal, sound good to you?
Not that again, I'm not asking permission. It's just like
the run by I'm saying, but it's because I need
a co sign it, yo. And again Rich Rich always
paints me out to be like that's baby boy mentality,

(08:45):
and guys you might agree, but Rich is like, nah, man,
I don't I just do my own thing.

Speaker 5 (08:51):
A great example would be the uh the famous hawk
to a girl. Canino's first thought was huh, what would
her parents think? And my thought is never what would
my mom or dad think.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
He respect the money.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
I don't live my life with the thought in the
back of my head what would gregor Maryann think? I
just don't. I love them, but I don't make decisions
ever based on what they would think. Is I'll be honest,
I think for all the good advice they've given me,
I think they've given me equally bad advice at times,
because I think, as Clay chose Dallas because that was
right for him, his dad can't see that path. A

(09:27):
great example would be when my wife and I were
looking for houses, my dad tried to discourage me.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
You're not asking for permission, You're just you're just running.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
It by him.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
So what's your relationship all surface about what picks you're
gonna make this weekend? When it comes to gambling, Like,
there's no real conversation. What do you talk to your
mom about the weather? You don't you ever bring up
anything important?

Speaker 5 (09:54):
I mean, I do talk a lot about my gambling
picks with my dad.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Again, and I'm not criticizing anybody's relationship, but I think
it all comes down to the type of relationship you
have with your parents or family, whoever this may be.
And that's going to be different for everybody, and I
do get that, but I'm not the weird guy as
you painted out all the time for running those things
by my parents.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
You're still there, You're still their offspring.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
But what about what if again, what if you are
more risky than your parents or you guys have different ideologies.
My example I was going to give was when my
wife and I were looking for houses. My dad was
like adamant about like, oh, I would not buy a
house that you have to renovate and redo them. Like yeah, Dad,
but I think, like we're getting this price and if

(10:44):
we put this much money into it. We've talked about it,
but he was like, I want to do it. And
it ended up being like one of my best decisions. I,
you know, moving to La I don't know if I
would do that. I bought an investment property in Colorado.
I remember my dad being like, oh, terrible idea, and like, man,
ends up being a good idea. Like so sometimes when
let's say you're a riskier person, I don't know, I

(11:08):
just feel like sometimes like uh, I'm I'm on the
side of clay here where it's like right for you.

Speaker 6 (11:14):
Man, I think rich runs stuff behast his parents after
he's already made the decision.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
After yeah, after, but like again, like just something simple
like the car. Rich was talking about his new car
and he's like, oh, I I didn't even tell my
dad I got a new car. I'm like, that's a
major purchase.

Speaker 6 (11:28):
Dude.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
It's not like you bought a pair of jeans. You know,
you don't got to run those things by your parents.
And again, it's not permission. Rich always paints it out
like you're asking permission. No one's asking permission. I never
call up my dad like hey, Dad, you think I
should lease or or no. I would actually say, hey,
here's the least, here's the here's the finance.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
What do you what do you think?

Speaker 2 (11:48):
It doesn't mean I'm gonna do what they think, but
I do run it by them just to see because
maybe there's a comforting answer there that backs up my
my decisions.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Rich, who's the first person you called after you got
the dup scott our boss? Because he's he kisses ass?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
That's why get that's something my dad, my dad, that's
a dad thing. You know, he's kissing ass? Why you kiss?

Speaker 5 (12:11):
But you know what a great example, again, these are
these These are all times where someone would maybe talk
to a family member or close friend. But the story
goes back to Clay. His dad said he's disappointed he
chose Dallas over the Lakers, but Comino.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Honestly, I think Clay's dad needs to chill with that.
And I say that respectfully because this is his dad.
But when you make a life changing, tough decision the
way Clay did, all you want is support, and you
want that from your parents, the people closest to you.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
You don't want your dad publicly out.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
There saying that you potentially made a decision he's not
happy about.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
You don't want even if he is.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Clay's dad has every right to feel every way he does,
but you keep that to yourself. Just for your kid,
for your kid, and just pray for the best. At
that point, you're not praying for your kid to play
for the Lakers. You're praying for whatever decision he makes.
That's a selfish way to me, to be honest, his
dad was just being selfish, you know. If we're being

(13:13):
real about it and right, not righteous right about it,
you know he should be now praying that his son
made the best decision for him, not that he's a Laker. Look,
you know who handle this well, Shaquille O'Neill. To my knowledge,
when you think of college, you think of Shaquille O'Neill LSU, Right.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah, yeah, baby, And my daughter she had a big
choice to make. Well. She gonna play for LSU of Florida,
and she chose Florida.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
And I remember seeing a story like I was thinking,
man Shacksonnaby.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
I wasn't disappointed. I'm happy for my daughter. He was
extremely happy.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Never even mentioned once that ah, he really wanted her to,
you know, follow in her dad's footsteps. He was proud
that she was choosing whatever was right for her, even
though it might sting a little bit.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
This firework bust that you and Daddy were talking about
in Los Angeles outside of LA did get us thinking
about how it is crazy that we all live in
the same country, yet the rules are so different states
to state. Talk about this with you and a buddy
the other day, how first of all, all of it
was ilegal. What twenty plus years ago, gambling weed fireworks

(15:10):
like you know, fireworks are different states to state and
same with weed and same with gambling. To think that
in our lifetime you couldn't go on a sports show
and talk about a point spread.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
And now everybody leans into it. Now it's a major
talking point. It's amazing to see how quickly things have changed.
So you know that being said, enjoy it and enjoy
your fireworks responsibly, keep your fingers intact this weekend Again,
if you just missed the story, it's the largest firework

(15:44):
bust in California history seventy five tons, a street value
of seven to ten million dollars, and this stash of fireworks,
officials believe was imported from China. From China, So that
just got us thinking out some of those other things
that had that stigma about them, and now we do
them so freely. And it makes me think of two

(16:07):
way back on a Wednesday, Rich my favorite thing.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Again. I was happy to.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Get my hands on some jumping jacks for real as
a kid, but I got such a kick out of it,
and I used to tie into sports, which is amazing
for Fox Sports.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
I would take my whiffle ball bat.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
And I would put the end of the whistler right
at the end of the knob of the bat, and
I would aim like this and shoot at the kids
that didn't like riding their bikes around the neighborhood and
get him right in the ass. Dude, we would shoot
them at the kids the whistles.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
I don't know if that's a good idea.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Yeah, it's fun, fun for the whole family. Man do
it responsibly, That's my point, though. You gotta do it
respectfully and responsibly.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
So let me ask you this, Beside the whole gambling
and weed and fireworks and all the stuff that, like,
is it illegal not illegal? Depends on where you are
right tonight, Tomorrow, Friday, the rest of the week when
people are having cookouts and Fourth of July festivities, is
the right combination, Like you have a couple things to

(17:11):
light off on your own and then you go watch
a big show, or you the guy that tries to
put on a show for the neighborhood.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Dude, It depends where you are. It's regionally different. Again,
the rules are different everywhere. You brought up Idaho before.
When I'm somewhere like that, every neighborhoods sort of putting
on their own display, and you're just sitting in front
of the garage watching the neighborhood kids or families acting
like they're the Grucci Brothers, you know, lighting up their
whole spectacle. I'm one of those old school dudes who

(17:40):
normally goes to the local fireworks display and I even
throw a few oohs and os out there way back
on a Wednesday.

Speaker 5 (17:47):
They have to.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
Yeah, they don't do that as much anymore, Joel. I
try to bring it back.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
You guys, know, when the street shows really picked up
in southern California during COVID because there were a lot
of shows you know that would be on the block
in the neighborhood during COVID though, because we weren't traveling
to all get in a big group together and watch shows.
Oh my goodness, I had never seen or heard as
many fireworks. And that's one of the reasons why they

(18:13):
could have got ten million dollars on the street for
all these fireworks La Guardina where they're at home of
Hustler Casino. They're in the heart of La So imagine
all those sales lost. And a lot of people in
southern California obviously are worried about fires.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
It could be a lot of said Vato kids here
this weekend.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
Besides fingers being blown off, which some people worry about. Yeah,
you know in California, I've been in.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
A competition and you snitched. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
By the way, the demand is extra high in the
Guardina area. If you happen to have some, right you
have some candles. You know, it's interesting that bust.

Speaker 5 (18:48):
There's someone out there that doesn't realize that that bust
saved their finger. Like there's a guy that would have
lost his finger, but now he's going to keep it
because he didn't get his hands on those fireworks.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
The kids missing out on that sort of fun this
weekend now as a result of it.

Speaker 6 (19:03):
Well, speaking of changes, what was the most explosive firework
when you were young?

Speaker 3 (19:08):
It was for me it was like the cherry bomb.
But that's nothing today nothing.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
Yeah, those are the ones I remember for sure. And
of course you think of Joe Dirt, the Husker Jews,
and the Husker Dots.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
I think there's some out there putting holes in grounds.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
Now, what was the you said, cherry bombs? I remember
kids having eighties? Is that the same thing?

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Yeah, you throw them in a dumb stick.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
They might even be more powerful, But there's gonna be
some little Vato kids out there wishing they had some.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Wait a second, you mean we have no whistling bungholes
and no spleen splitters, no whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, whoskerdos
or Whosker dontes, no cherry bombs, Nipsey dasers, with or
without the scooter stick.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Also, you said scooter and our pre show meeting Rich
on this day what seven years ago?

Speaker 5 (19:55):
Back it up, Terry, back it up. No reverse Terry.
It's been how many years on the on this fourth
of Giant it'll be seven the seven year anniversary of
back It Up Terry, which, by the way, to me,
is the best Fourth of July video of all time.
Back it Up Terry, Put a Reverse, Put a reverse.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
I can't believe it's been seven years. That's one of
the most famous viral Fourth of July videos. And uh,
to wrap it up, rich, Yeah, we've seen the progression
of marijuana. We've seen gambling become a household thing, everyday
thing on sports talk and TV fireworks. Still that stigma
of it's illegal, you know, again this big giant bust.

(20:36):
But I also think we've seen the progression of like
OnlyFans and things like that, where it had a stigma.
Now your neighbor is doing it. You know, Like we
live in a time now where you could see your
co worker undress and do weird things if you were
willing to pay for it. Something you used to fantasize
about that hot girl at the office. Now she's got

(20:58):
a page. Your neighbor's got to pay. So, I mean,
we live in a different world than at a different time.
And I say that respectfully.

Speaker 6 (21:05):
You know, as you make me think about that, think
of the opposite though. Back in the day they were
smoking in sporting events and the indoors in the club
could I never thought that I'd see that regulated in
the club.

Speaker 5 (21:20):
Imagine imagine that, Joel, Imagine there were people the club.
I remember because in our early days, I do remember
Jersey or New York, one of the other communal one
you couldn't smoke one. You could smoke cigarettes. And I
remember one time you would always come back smelling like cigarettes.
But to think that, at one point when our parents
were younger, people would smoke on an airplane.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
I remember they had the ashtrays on the arm rests.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Right, So there you have it, do it respectfully and
again check out that. Yeah, be safe. Let's do that.
And I don't in the car in the war, not anymore.
Now it's time to play Chipotle worker or w NBA player.

Speaker 5 (22:01):
Ge j p Are.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
You're gonna get a marine brown Jersey? Does she playing
with wn?

Speaker 5 (22:07):
Let's play a game that is clearly sweeping the nation.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
Chipotle worker, w NBA player.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
All right, it is Cavino and Rich live in Mercedes
Benz Studios in for Dan Patrick day three of the
Dan Slam, and I turn it.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
Over to our host, Chipotle worker or.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
WNBA player again our attempt to learn more and dive
into the w NBA just a little more.

Speaker 4 (22:31):
Yeah, we show damn love not only to the Chipotle workforce,
but suddenly everybody across the US is an expert on
the w NBA. But how many players do you really know?
We're about to find out, and go ahead.

Speaker 5 (22:45):
The Angel Reeses and the Kateley Clarks and the Cameron Brinks.
You know the big names. You know the they just
announced the All Stars and you saw Angel Reese was
in tears. But Danny, I love how you break it
down with the more unknowns.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
Yes, sir, all right.

Speaker 4 (22:58):
By the way, Spotty is gonna keep score during the
eight rounds of this game. As long as our caller
doesn't come in last place, they're gonna walk away with
a shiny new sea in our swiggy, our fancy water bottles.
All right, let's go to those studio lines. Kevin Wyert
on updates. I'm gonna use you for this. Would you
love to travel to New York State, Ohio, Oregon or Arizona?

Speaker 3 (23:20):
Give me Oregon, Oregon. That's Brian, what's up, Brian? Yay,
what's up? Guys? Good morning. What do you do there
for a living in Oregon?

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Stephanie Dolson's a six to five center for the Washington Mystics.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
Oh, now right, all Brian has to do is not
come in last place exactly. That's how you win your swiggy. Now,
for everybody listening in the car, at the office, at home,
lighting fireworks, just chilling out. You could also qualify to
win a c in our swiggy. It's a stainless deal.
Cavino and Rich on Fox Sports.

Speaker 5 (28:53):
Radio water bottle.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
Just by leaving a review on Apple podcasts, say something nice,
leave a review live to us.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
I don't care. And if you ever hear Danny g
call your name, you win. I appreciate that. Spotty just
calculated the points.

Speaker 8 (29:07):
Let me tell you it came down to the last question,
which was really exciting. I'll start with the winners. Joel,
you were on fire most of the game up until
the last few questions, and then Covino kind of tied
you up. So Covino Joel, first playoff, first place, in
second place, me a tie with Kevin Wyre. We came
in second place and in last place because it was

(29:32):
a tie up until the very ends last question, Rich Davis,
last place.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
Brian, congratulations, Oh thank you. I knew none of those.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
What a way to start the holiday weekend, am I right? Yeah,
Well you can be swinging in that swiggy. Oh sounds good, Brian, thanks,

Speaker 5 (29:58):

Speaker 5 (30:25):
Or should I say? Since it is the week of.

Speaker 3 (30:27):
The fourth, I'm sorry? Was that your Wendy Williams?

Speaker 5 (30:29):
What was that?

Speaker 1 (30:30):
No?

Speaker 5 (30:31):
How you doing it? Was by Joey Tribiani.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
Okay, I'm doing good.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
I'm always having fun filling in like filling Frank for
the Great Dan Patrick. Day three of the Dan Slam,
which means we'll be here tomorrow as well, celebrating.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
The holiday.

Speaker 5 (30:47):
Celebrity.

Speaker 3 (30:49):
Oh yeah, we'll we celebrating with you tomorrow morning, Covino
and Rech.

Speaker 5 (30:53):
We are going to talk some movies in a little bit,
so keep your fourth of July. Red White, and Blue
chonyes On a movie was released today on Netflix, and
I think everyone's gonna be talking about it. I thought,
I don't know why call me? You know, maybe I
just didn't. I'm not a good reader. I guess I
thought it was Beverly Hills Cup four the whole time.

(31:15):
It's Beverly Hills cop Axel F that's the fourth one.
It's not called Beverly Hills Cup four. But Eddie Murphy's
back today on Netflix, so I'm sure a lot of
people are gonna be talking about that. So we'll talk
a little movies, a little bit. We'll do Midweek Major
with spot all the big headlines in the world of
sports and entertainment, and today's an anniversary of something I
wanted to just bring up before the end of the show.

(31:36):
So as I say, back it up, Terry, back it up, Terry,
put it reverse, Terry. I know, we wanted to talk
about Tim Anderson.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Tim Anderson, It's as simple as what happened. He was
his own biggest fan. He was saying things like he's
the next Jackie Robinson. I mean he said that, not us.

Speaker 5 (31:57):
Well, yeah, our buddy Jason Stewart for The Doug Gottlieb
Show put on Twitter yesterday. Makes it tough to be
the next Jackie Robinson when you're not on a big
league roster.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
In his defense, I think the quote was like he
feels like he's the next Jackie Robinson. In his defense,
he was putting up big numbers. He' batted three thirty
five one year in twenty nineteen, Champ batting Champ the
next year, three twenty two, three oh nine, three oh one,
three oh one, and twenty twenty two when he was
an All Star. And now with Miami he's designated for assignment.

(32:32):
The Marlins have designated Tim Anderson for assignment. Now, my
theory is pretty simple, and there may be no juice
to this theory at all, but my theory is, here's
what happened to Tim Anderson. The dude got punched in
the face with a little reality check. I feel like,
here's a guy who was so mostful, so flashy, and

(32:56):
so good and confident in himself that when and Jose
Ramirez of the Guardians embarrassed him nationwide and that highlight
was everywhere and it lived over and over again on
social media, I feel like it knocked the steam out
of him and made him feel stupid, and I feel
like it hurt his ego a little bit, which hurt

(33:19):
his confidence, and he hasn't been the same player since.
And you could say, oh, maybe some injuries here and there,
but I'm telling you, man, I think they had a
lot to do because we've seen it before with Joey Batts.
I feel like when Jose Bautista, I feel like what
we're getting again is another case of Jose Bautista, a
guy who I mean, that dude had a strut about him,
the bat flip, he played flashy.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
He had that sweet scruff.

Speaker 5 (33:41):
He was Diesel.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
That dude was jack playing with all this swag and confidence. Right,
he gets embarrassed by roof net Odor, smaller guy knocks
him out boom right.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
We all remember that, and.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
He can't shake it off because honestly, it was the
lasting image for everybody. And it just seems so odd
because we had this image of Bautista and we're like,
roof Need had the best of him, the same way
that Jose Ramirez had the best of Tim Anderson. When
Tim Anderson welcomed that that little scrum that they had
and he got knocked down on his ass in that clip.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
That's embarrassing.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
So he went from batting champion batting three hundreds to
two forty five and twenty twenty three to a meager
like Bob Seger, only because it rhymes nothing against Bob
seger uh, but at the two fourteen now designated for assignment.
Now do we wish him the best? Yeah, he's an
electric player and I do, but we ask what happened

(34:40):
to this?

Speaker 3 (34:40):
Dude?

Speaker 5 (34:42):
Two factors here from me, I don't know if I'm
buying it to the whole Odor Bautista theory, like sometimes
you get hit backed. Its reality it was part two.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
Man, you lose your mojo.

Speaker 5 (34:52):
You're like Austin Powers lost his mojo back and back
in the nineties. Listen, I get it. There are times
where a guy could lose his mojo, his confidence. Dude.
Not to get vulgar, but it happens to guys in
the bedroom because sometimes the guy's all confident, goes through
a rough breakup and he's like, hey, buddy, what's going
on now with you?

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Because once, once you have that moment and it gets
in your head, it's almost like you're mentally you're mentally
cramping your next performance.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
And I feel like some of this gotten in Tim's head.

Speaker 5 (35:19):
Man. I mean that used to be the criticism of
a Rod in the playoffs, like he would he would
you know, bat three hundred be an MVP candidate year, off,
the year, postseason until nine a ra would get in
the postseason, grip the bat too tight, as you would say,
and listen, guys getting their own head. I have another theory.
There's two theories here. Number one, I think if you've

(35:42):
been there, done that, unless you're an old, washed up guy,
I believe you have it in you to get back.
So a lot of times you see an NBA player
who has a rough season shooting, or you know, you
see a guy batting fifty points lower than he usually
does un back who lost a step. Sometimes I feel
like if a guy's young enough, that's a great guy

(36:05):
to take a chance on. Like to me, there's got
to be a team right now. That's like, ooh, we
could fix Tim and this.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
Well, sometimes people get in their own way, and you
might be seeing that. Even with Trevor Bauer. I'm not
comparing the two at all at all. These are two
totally different stories, let's make that clear. But they both
had a stigma of being bad clubhouse guys. And maybe
that's what it is too. It's like Miami's like, yo,
he's batt in two fourteen and nobody likes him.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
It's not worth it. So they designate him for assignment.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
Again, that's me speculating, because Tim Anderson has gone on record.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
This is not me just speculating.

Speaker 2 (36:40):
This is what he said back in the day about
how he's not there to make friends and he sort
of travels alone because he doesn't feel like the rest
of his teammates because of cultural differences and regional differences,
and he doesn't bond with his team really like on
the field, yes, off the field, no. So maybe it's like, hey,
this guy, nobody gets along with him really, and he's
batting two fourteen. This is gay, you know, let's just

(37:02):
move on from him. So maybe it's a little of
that too. Maybe that's what makes it easy for them
to move on from him, and maybe that's why other
people might not want to deal with him.

Speaker 5 (37:12):
Dude, do you remember Danny giam I right, I said
it was D'Angelo Russell, right, like a year ago. He
shot awful from three point range and then it looked like, ooh,
he he got his playoff shot back and then he
sort of fell apart again.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
Well no, no, no.

Speaker 4 (37:25):
The season before that, he struggled. This past season, he
broke a Lakers record for the most threes made and.

Speaker 5 (37:32):
Then when the Nuggets came around, he did have another
couple rough games.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
Was inconsistent.

Speaker 5 (37:37):
Yeah, yeah, don't regress back to that, D'Angelo Russell. I
think when a guy has that skill and maybe it's mental,
I think he could find his way back to you know,
I hope.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
So I'm not rooting against him. He's only thirty one.
I believed him.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
There's another question at hand here, and it just popped
in my head. So I don't want to put you
on the spot. I know you love when I do that.
So Tim Anderson batting champ, DJ Lom Mayhew batting champ
in both leads, Jeff McNeil batting champ. What's doing with

(38:13):
all these batting champs going from three point thirty three
forty to like the interstate when we were kids, Not
to sound like when we were kids, but like Wade
Boggs didn't have a season where he bat at two ten.
You know, Tony Gwinn didn't go from betting three sixty
to two twenty one year. Oh, are these guys getting
figured out? Are they trying to adjust their game? What
is going on where Jeff McNeil, DJ lem Mayhew and

(38:36):
Tim Anderson all batting champs.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Again, if we're gonna play what happened, right, Lem Mayhew.
Foot injuries never the same. Dude's, you know, stomping around
the bases looking like his feet hurt. So again, I
think you're dealing with injuries. That has to be a
big part of it, Tim Anderson. I do believe that
people are figured out right rich, But Tim Anderson went
from batting champion three thirty five. The next year he

(38:58):
bat at three twenty two, the year after that three
to oho nine, the year after that three to oh one,
and then he gets punched in the face. Then he
starts to fall off a little bit. So I think
injury has a big part of it. I think there's
a lot of mental that's a part of it. Your
thoughts again, is he just another Joey Batts situation going

(39:18):
on or do you think there's something more? Of course,
like I said, we're never rooting for anyone to fail.
That's not the type of people we are. I'd love
to see Tim Anderson come back and help a team win.
I'd love to see that.

Speaker 5 (39:34):
Again.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
I think he was in the league too long to
be where they figured him out, you know, I think
this is his ninth or tenth year already. Like a
guy like Luis Heell, who's a pitcher for the Yankees, Right, dude,
he came out on fire this season, and now they're
saying because he struggled his last four starts, they're saying
that he's getting lit up because they figured him out.

(39:57):
That makes you know they he's been exposed to some
degree and they figured out how to how to play him.
I think that has some juice when it's a young
player new You know, when a guy comes out and
he's hitting bombs because no one knows how to pitch
to him. Then they figure him out and he falls off.
Tim Anderson was was an All Star.

Speaker 5 (40:20):
It's it's so hard to it's so hard to decide.
Is it mental? Did they lose their skill set? I mean,
these guys have been playing since their little kids. They
get to an elite level, they're elite at an elite level,
and then you just dip off. It really just never
makes sense to me now it.

Speaker 2 (40:39):
As such, you know what a tough game it is.
Like DJ Lemayhew was a batting champ in both leagues, right,
you know, you you miss all these games. You just
can't just jump right back and be the same DJ
Lemayhew you once were. And I think that happened to
Tim Anderson with a mix of again getting knocked on
his ass publicly. Again, maybe he's not the bad as

(41:00):
dude in the land because he just got knocked out
and and I'm sure he DA battles the day to
day injuries just like anybody else, and it's hard to
get back.

Speaker 4 (41:09):
Getting knocked out is an embarrassments and it can shake
your confidence, and confidence is such a huge part in
sports that when you lose that, it's hard to bounce back.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
I'm not sure I was ever the same when I
was knocked out by James Buck to Douglas, you think
Mike Tyson was really the same fighter after that. No,
even even we as fans were like, oh he's human,
I don't know man, and he got Have.

Speaker 5 (41:34):
You seen that? Have you seen that meme? Uh rolling
around about the Cubs pitcher, Uh show ta imonga. You
know the young picture before meeting Angel Reese they did,
they did a w n B a gay game Day.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
I think rich Is mentally shook after blowing that name
right there. I think that name just punched her in
the face. He's give him a break, he's tired, he's
and doing a lot of travel. Joe Biden the cold, Yeah, guys,
I had a cold and.

Speaker 5 (42:06):
I was traveling. My team warned me against it, but
I almost fell asleep on stage air.

Speaker 3 (42:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
Man, that name punched you in the face and shook
the rest of your confidence in that sentence.

Speaker 5 (42:15):
I don't think, guys, sh.

Speaker 2 (42:22):
I'll be honest, I don't think I hear it word
after that, you know, damn it. But that's that proves
Danny Geen and our point. He was embarrassed. Can you imagine,
rich you you're the bad This dude had a strut
about him, a swag about him.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
He was playingly.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
He was Willie Mays Hayes, right, he had that vibe
about him, and he was that guy. He was him
as they say. He gets knocked on his ass by
Jose Ramirez and dude, we don't know, we'll never know, hopefully,
what it's like to be embarrassed on that level where

(43:01):
you know you have to pretend and come out the
next day like it didn't happen, and then it lives
on social media and everyone's sharing it and it's on
the highlight reels everywhere, like, we don't know what that's like.

Speaker 8 (43:10):
Rich just broke down on national radio. So that's pretty embarrassing. Yeah,
I hope you don't get the.

Speaker 3 (43:14):
Yips after that.

Speaker 5 (43:16):
I'm not saying another athlete. Stay the rest of the show,
you know, let me try, Let me try again. Oh no, o,
oh boy, have you seen the meme? Now every word
feels weird. Oh have you seen the meme? Geez, stop it?

(43:37):
Have you seen the meme of Chicago Cubs picture showta
Imaga his e r before meeting Angel Reese they did
a w NBA night at the stadium at Wrigley. His
aarra was point eight nine zero eight nine, and then
after meeting Angel Reese, his aar ray has been seven
point four five. I don't think it's the Angel, but

(44:00):
people are joking about it.

Speaker 2 (44:01):
No, he should probably have set an appointment with Grimace
to fix this problem.

Speaker 5 (44:08):
So you got to wonder, like, yo, listen, it's not Intel, reason,
it's not Grimace. Something happens where teams or players or
things get hot get cold. Sometimes it's permanent. Now, Danny
g it could.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
Be something personal too though. All right, so again we're
just speculating, right, and we've seen it in the past.
My favorite example is always like a Chuck knob Block.
Everyone was like, what happened at Chuck Knoblock. He was
a superstar in Minnesota, and now he can't even throw
to first base with the Yankees, and he still played
really well, and then he moved to the outfield, if
you remember, because he had so many issues at second.

(44:43):
Turns out he was dealing with a lot of post
divorce stress and going through a divorce and a lot
of personal issues that we don't know about. That's the
thing that we tend to forget.

Speaker 3 (44:53):
Now.

Speaker 2 (44:54):
I'm not saying that Tim Anderson is going through these things.
The truth is we don't know and we're speculating, but
we often forget that there are real people going through
real people problems.

Speaker 3 (45:04):
For all we know is puppy died and that weighs
on him, and that's understandable.

Speaker 2 (45:09):
The thing is we don't know, and all we could
do was speculate because we're like Tim Anderson designated for assignment.

Speaker 5 (45:16):
He should be.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
Lighting up with the Marlins right now.

Speaker 5 (45:18):
Yeah, I mean, here's a guy that was sought after
right now based on what you just said, I remember
former Dodger Danny G. Former New York Meth the guy's
been around the league back in the day. Paul Laduka
had his best year during his divorce. Because you never
know how you're got to react in those moments.

Speaker 2 (45:35):
I call that Brett Favre theory man. When his pops passed,
he had like the game of his life. You remember that, yeah,
of course, because some people have a crazy ability to
block everything out when they're in between the lines.

Speaker 5 (45:49):
Now there are some young players in the NFL, Danny G.
You know that As a Niners fan, maybe I shouldn't
be as nervous anymore. But remember the sentiment last year
was brock per he will be exposed, like they'll figure
him out that Who knows if that story is written yet.
Now another full season for Brock party, you're gonna get,
you know, yeah? Yeah, the year two of c J. Stroud.

(46:13):
Is he gonna replicate what he did last year for
the Texans? And you know, you never know after one
year in any league, right when Bin Yama next year
could come out and light it up, or these guys
could take a step backward. You don't know, dude.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
I think I think there's something more to the story. Remember,
like I said, it could be personal and we don't
know about it. I call that the Matt Harvey theory.
Remember what happened to Matt Harvey, the Dark Knight. You
were his biggest fan man every Friday night in New York.
We were on s n Y at the time. It
was like a major event when he took the mount.
Everyone was wearing their Batman masks. Matt Harvey taking over

(46:51):
the city.

Speaker 3 (46:52):
It was electric.

Speaker 5 (46:53):
I want that Batman mask in the bedroom too, I'm sure.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
And then the backstory was he was dating Victoria's secret model,
Adriana Lima, and I get it, she's a once in
a lifetime looker, right, But then he was all heartbroken
and distraught when they broke up, and he was publicly
like crying about it and everything.

Speaker 3 (47:14):
And dude, I'm not saying, hey, suck it up and
be a man.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
That's life, and certain things get to you and they
hit people different ways, and in my opinion, he let
that bleed into his job and wasn't the same. Of course,
he dealt with injury too, rich, but I'm saying it's
it's just like the snowball effect of things that he
couldn't get past. But I remember that, and I remember
to me he lost his confidence in that moment. Wasn't

(47:39):
the same guy?

Speaker 5 (47:40):
Could I compliment you? Because I never do?

Speaker 3 (47:42):
Sure?

Speaker 5 (47:43):
Is it my hair?

Speaker 3 (47:43):
Thanks man?

Speaker 5 (47:45):
Actually no, you got you got like a superman like
like one. Yeah, it's actually it's not that great today.

Speaker 3 (47:51):
That's to steal your girl, curl, bro, that's what that is.

Speaker 5 (47:54):
That's never been called that. It is when when you
were going through your divorce, because you know, people I
love to bring up your divorce. I'm I'm shocked at
some of the great radio and TV we did during that.
I feel like you pulled the Paul Leduca.

Speaker 3 (48:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (48:13):
While while you might have been hurting on the inside
and figuring out like oh visit you know child support?

Speaker 6 (48:18):
This?

Speaker 5 (48:18):
When can I see my kid? When you were going
through your divorce, we were doing great radio and broadcasting.
You could have been terrible and that would have hurt me,
the show, everything. But you know, some people go through
personal stuff and they bring it to work. Some people
just dive into work. And I'm not again, I'm not.
I'm not saying that's Tim Anderson. Something ain't. Something ain't.

(48:39):
During the kool Aid, as Astern Tura and Tone Lokan said,
something ain't during the kool Aid and you know, maybe
it's baseball. Maybe baseball is a game of It is
a game of inches more than any other game. Where
a Tim Anderson, a DJ le Mayhew, a Jeff McNeil,
Jeff McNeil. Again, these are all batting champs that are

(49:00):
batting around two hundred or have been a sign So
it's like, what the hell's going on? Maybe you realize
that like the other night, Jeff McNeal had an over
but every at bat he hit a nice heart shot
at someone and you could see the frustration in his eyes.
So baseball is a tricky mental game more than any I.

Speaker 2 (49:20):
Think so out of doubt and we know he's better
than that, and we can't help but speculate. Is it
Joey Batts sort of thing. Is it a confidence thing?
Is it a personal thing, a physical thing? Tim Anderson
designated for assignment, you know, wishing him the best. He's
still a young player, one of the best at what
he did. My opinion was never the same after getting
knocked on his ass.
