Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Welcome in everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday Era Tours.
Jason Martin, we are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports
Radio studios. Jay Bartin Torres, We're back, baby. I was
out the last two weeks July. I will just tell
the audience not that anybody cares. Crazy birthday month in
(00:26):
the Torres family, So I've just been a lot of
family stuff over the last couple of weeks. J Martin,
I know you were in with Arnie last week.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
I think you shared why you were out two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
So I'm hoping and assuming since you were back last
week that everything's okay and that everything was successful and everything.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
But hope you're well.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Hope everything's good, and most importantly, it's great to be
back with you.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Man.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
How you doing doing well?
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Man? Doing well? Yeah, everything went pretty well. Sign a surgery.
I mean, you know, it wasn't the most fun for
a couple of days. Felt like I had a really bad,
so honest infection for about two weeks. But doing okay.
Still kind of waiting to see the final results tabulate
over the next couple of weeks to what they you know,
really kind of hit what they should hit. But yeah,
(01:13):
I was here with Arnie last week and I made
it through and congratulation that's always a positive. Of course.
He was talking about how you taking off July just
shows you know, a lack of character on your part
and things like that. So you know how it goes.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I sure do. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
I mean when I took off the back to back Saturdays,
I knew there was gonna be a lot of snark
from Arnie Spanierd of course, But I'll give Arnie span
your credit for this. No matter what he said about
me last week, it wasn't crazy or more delusional then
what came out of the WNBA All Star Game. J Mart,
(01:54):
That's right. I you know, listen, I know we've been
blessed with a lot of good stories here in May, June, July,
plenty to talk about. It feels like there's been no shortage.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Tonight, we knew we were coming off the WNBA All
Star Game. We weren't really quite sure if it was
gonna be a topic, what the angle was gonna be.
Caitlin Clark was out, well, you know the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I'll tell you this, love them or hate them.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
They are the content gods that keep on giving because
for people who have not seen it, First of all,
dis Seger gave you all the particulars.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Congrats to Team Collier for winning the WNBA All Star Game.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I'll say this before we get to the main point,
a little bit of an embarrassment because they have taken
up the NBA vibes of oh, let's just not even
try and this is fun and it's like, no, no,
you guys aren't good enough to whatever.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
But that's not the story.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
The story is before the game, and we're not blowing
this up because this is now officially the lead story
on ESPN dot com. Before the game, WNBA All Stars,
who are currently in collective targeting negotiations with their obviously
with the players union and obviously the league, they wore
(03:07):
every player wore shirts that said pay us what you
owe us, pay us what you owe us in the
midst of a contract or a CBA negotiation. Jaymartin, I
got so many takes, but I feel like the only
one that gets fired up more fired up about WNBA
(03:28):
stupidity than me is you. So I'm gonna go ahead
and give you the floor and piggyback off what you
have to say about WNBA players all wearing pay us
what you Owe Us t shirts in warm ups prior
to the All Star Game.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
I'm what am I supposed to say?
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Whatever you want, Just let it all out, pretend there's
not even nobody's listening.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
It's just the two of us.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
First off, well, look, probably not a whole lot of
people watch this. Anybody that found out when Clark was
not going to be part of it, was not gonna play,
it was gonna be on the sidelines whatever like that.
You never have seen probably an All Star game go
from hero to zero that fast in your life. But
they're wearing these shirts. I would argue most people have
(04:17):
no idea what they mean. First of all, they're making
a statement about pay us what you owe us. I
understand you're in the midst of collective bargaining, so you're
trying to do you get as much as you possibly can.
And I really don't begrudge you for that, but you
got to read the room, and by the room, I
mean the country. If the WNBA ceased to exist tonight,
(04:40):
the marketplace would not shift one iota. It wouldn't even
recognize it. It wouldn't even notice, like literally outside of just
a few die hards that are out there that you know,
just swear by women's basketball, especially women's pro ball. I've
always argued, continue to argue women's college basketball is always
going to be bigger overall. Then the WNBA is The
(05:03):
only difference now is there's a unicorn in that league.
We'll see how long that last, because she seems to
be getting hurt an awful lot, and they've squandered big
opportunities with her already. But if it went away, would
anyone really even notice, Like, would you really, like four
months from now, say, man who won the WNBA championship,
(05:23):
I missed that somewhere. If it went away, we wouldn't
even recognize it. They'd have to tell us that they
went away for us to even know it happened. And
I know some people are offended by me saying that,
but I'm just being honest. It's not a league that
has any kind of name recognition whatsoever, and any kind
of recognition it seems to be getting is negative. Everything
(05:44):
is negative. Everything comes across as selfish everything mainly, and
it's not even about the money, but it comes across
as incredibly tone deaf based on how they've treated their
one superstar. Everything that they say seems to be political
and wrong, and now they're coming out of here sand
that they want a bunch more money for what, Like,
You're not going to be drawing any money. The only
(06:05):
reason you exist is because Adam Silver and the NBA
has continued to allow it to happen. It's not like
it's making them money. So I mean, good for them
for trying to get the money that they think that
they deserve. But wearing those shirts is just gonna make
most of the sports watching public roll their eyes because
one they're not gonna care, and two they're not even
(06:25):
gonna understand, and three they're gonna say, yeah, great, yeah,
go ahead and pay them, pay them what they want.
That's fine. But if they disappear, it's gonna be like
spring football, man Like, it's just gonna go and we're
gonna keep on moving on with our lives.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
So that was much nicer than I thought you were
gonna be a couple of things. When you said the
average consumer probably doesn't know what they mean, I would
disagree only because I think the WNBA's brand is now
delusion it's delusion with everything that they do. It's usion
(07:00):
with how much money they should be paid. It's delusion
with the fact that Caitlyn Clark isn't the only thing
that the general public cares about. It's delusion with why
does Asia Wilson get a shoe before Kate? It's like
ever And so I think to the degree that anybody
cares about the WNBA outside of Caitlin Clark, I actually
(07:22):
think that we're at the point where there's like a
baseline understanding of yeah, like they're out of their minds.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
And the only thing I.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Would say is, you know, well, really a couple of
things is that one. You know, I know, our our
buddy Clay Travis, you says all the time, and it's stuck.
I thought of it this evening when I saw this
is you know, Clay always used to say, and he's
a lawyer whatever. Everybody knows, you know his background, but
certainly you and I do. But he always used to say, listen,
(07:51):
everybody has First Amendment rights, but when you speak, we
are then allowed to react to what you said. And
this is just delusion on the highest level. And I
think the ironic part, the funny part I think the
fact that the part that anybody with a brain understands
(08:11):
is that if we actually.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Paid you what we owe you, we would just shut
down the league because not only do we not owe
you anything, Jmark.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
To your point, as everybody knows, and you know, I
think anyone who would listen to a show like this
understands us at this point is that the league loses
money hand over fist year over year, and to your point,
the only reason it's there is because of Adam Silver
and so, uh yeah, pay us what you owe us.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Okay, Cool, We're actually gonna.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Shut down the league and you guys can go get
real jobs because you guys don't make any money, and
so this concept that you should be making more out
of a pot of negative dollars that don't exist. I'm
sorry that I don't feel bad that your salaries are
not higher.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Yep, I mean that's right. Again, obviously we're not paying
you what we owe you. They're talking about the collective
bargaining in this situation. I understand that you're trying to
negotiate and all this, but you got to understand that
we don't need women's pro basketball in this country, Like
I mean, truth, truth be told, we don't need very
many sports in this country in terms of a need.
Like you think about what's needed and what's wanted and
(09:23):
all this kind of stuff, but generally, you're worth what
the marketplace is willing to pay you. You are worth
you know what you what you produce. And it's not
about you're out there working hard or you're practicing hard
or anything else. It's do people pay to see you?
And generally speaking, actually not generally majority speaking, the answer
(09:47):
is no. Like no, people are not like they're not
generally entertained by women's basketball. They're just not. You can
put Angel Reese on the cover of every video game
that you want to. It's I said this to Arnie
last week, and I no, you know you weren't here,
but we would have talked about this. I said. My
only real problem with that is I don't even care
because somebody tweeted and was upset and said, you know,
(10:09):
Angel Reese has better stats than Kaitlin Clark says, Its
not about stats. It's about who's going to sell the game.
It's about it's about selling copies. And I don't think
that people understand. I mean, shake Gil just Alexander is
the mail on the cover, and then you've got Carmelo
Anthony as the legend. Caitlin Clark would outsold both of
them because she's a unicorn, and because people would have
(10:29):
bought it that don't even play games and would have
kept it sealed and just put it on the shelf
as part of their collection. Nobody's buying an Angel Rees game,
but that Kaitlin Clark would have been that had been
one of the most popular covers in the history of
that game. That's the point. It has nothing to do
with Angel Reese having a good season or like her
(10:50):
basketball acumen is completely irrelevant to this. It's marketing. It's
about selling games. It's about selling things. And when you
look at the WNBA, they pretty much have one meal
ticket and that's it. And I think that you will
find that out when you see the ratings for what's
happened over the last couple of days with her being out,
not being in the three point Contest, not being in
the All Star Game. People might not want to hear it,
(11:13):
but I had zero interest. I don't know that I
would have watched anyway, but I definitely had no interest
at that point in time, there was nothing there at all.
So again I understand that they're in the midst of negotiations,
but the fans are not part of those negotiations, and
all we see is really it just kind of comes
(11:34):
across as entitlements like pay us because we're women's professional
basketball players, will pay you because you're worth money, will
pay you because you're Actually there's an ROI here, there's
a return on investment. There was no return on the
WNBA investment for the NBA none whatsoever. With all due
respect to the talented women that have played in that game,
(11:55):
it's just not a product that people are going to
go out of their way or cross their own street
to actually go see. It's just not like there was
talk about a w NBA tea. I saw this there
would people wanted to bring a WNBA team to Nashville
the show, and I was just like, what, like for
what reason? Like, there's no there's no there there, guys.
(12:19):
It's it's not a thing, like it's a manufactured dude.
It's like Pedro Pascal being the greatest actor alive. Because
he's in three films this summer. You can't turn around
and not see him in some movie. That doesn't mean
that he's a draw. It doesn't mean that he's actually
drawing money because he's paidro Pascal. He's not. Watch what
(12:40):
Fantastic four it does, you will see he's never actually
really drawn money as a top line actor. It's the
same deal with the WNBA. You can continue to try
and force feed it and tell us that it's worth
all this and it's special, and you can write all
the articles and spill all the virtual link that you
want to w this league. Just understand nobody's buying it,
like we can see through it because you tell me, Aaron,
(13:03):
outside of Caitlyn Clark, how many discussions have you had
about the WNBA with anybody on Earth since that league started?
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Zero? I actually think zero.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
There's a metaphor here in the I don't remember if
you and I talked about it. But the jeopardy did
you see the jeopardy question about Page Beckers, Mary Max
see if we have the sound of like just look
at up Page Beckers, Caitlyn Clark. So there was a
jeopardy question about maybe ten days or so ago, and
the question was basically like this, you know, women's basketball
(13:39):
Superstar had a busy spring she led.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
She led Yukon to a national championship.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
And then was the number one pick in the WNBA draft,
and guy chimes in right away, Katelen Clark, No, I'm sorry, no,
I'm sorry, And I bring it up because then they
went to the other two and nobody he had an answer,
and so I only bring it up because those were
three pretty intelligent people who probably have no investment in sports,
(14:07):
and it was like the whole it was like, oh,
there's a women's basketball question. I know Caitlin Clark. Oh
it's not Kaitlin Clark. I actually have no idea who
else this answer could possibly be?
Speaker 4 (14:20):
You know, yeah, well listen, like I mean, Shane Gillis
told the joke on Wednesday, he told the joke.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
It's true. Yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
When he when he had just randomly picked that person
in the crowd and people started applauding, He's like, yeah, no,
that's not.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Her at all.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
I knew you guys didn't know any w NBA players.
And then he was just like, man, as crazy as
you guys laughed at that, and I was just like this,
that right there is the epitome of all of it. Yeah,
Oh my goodness, this person from the w NBA that
we have. We couldn't pick out of a lineup of one.
If she was the only person left on the planet,
we've got to employ it for her. That was that
was gold because it was just complete accuracy. Like, I
(15:00):
hate it for them, but your word is right. They
are delusional. They are living in a dream world. This
is not reality. It just isn't like whatever. This very
very small niche of people is out there that is
consuming the WNBA product and mass. I bet you there
are less than five percent of people in this country
(15:23):
that could name you three WNBA players right now.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Let's hear what the w or what the Jeopardy panel?
Their thoughts are on women's basketball.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
That's it sporty stuff eight hundred.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
This Yukon star had an intense spring in twenty twenty five,
playing on her first national championship team and being picked
first in the WNBA draft.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Rahul, who is King Clark?
Speaker 6 (15:48):
No s Carter Sarah, that's Paige Becker's back.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
To you kick There you go like I would have
gotten that right, But I do this for a living. Yes,
we talk about this. Of course you went to Yukon,
but that tells you, like Caitlin Clark, who was not
in the draft this year. Fun fact, who's she's the
only one? Well, just the person saying Kaitlin Clark's like, yeah,
that was last year. But that tells you all you
(16:15):
need to know. Do you know who Asian Wilson is?
Do you know who Angel Reese is? Maybe just because
of her proximity to Kaitlin Clark, Like, dude, there's just
not a whole lot of Ryan Clark's out there consuming
w NBA, but.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
There's just not really quick guys, do we have this
Shane Gillis joke? All right, let's let's uh, well, we'll
we'll effort that. The last thing I'll say, we'll get
to some Shane Gillis and we'll end on a little
bit of a lighter note. Is the one thing that
I will say is I do like that.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
I do like what.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
We're at a place where it feels like everybody now
is okay, just acknowledging that that this league and its stars,
not every single one, but get the point that everybody
is delusional. I think last year when the Kateler Clark
stuff happened, everybody was kind of towing around it and
what can we say? And we know what the truth is,
but nobody really knows. I feel like the vast majority
(17:12):
of people that saw that, uh you know the T
shirts tonight Jason, were just like a, yeah, listen and listen.
I think this is coming off. Maybe it is, Maybe
it isn't. This isn't coming off like no one's anti
women's sports, Like nobody doesn't want women's sports to exist.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
That's not what we're doing here.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
But what we are saying is to the point that
I made earlier, when you put out an opinion or
you try to kind of silently protest publicly, we're allowed
to call you stupid if the protest is stupid. And
I do feel like we are now at a point
where the vast majority of like sports fans that kind
(17:52):
of understand the basic economics of sports, kind of understand
where we're at.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
You know.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Yeah, it's like, I mean, my biggest problem again, like
what you're negotiating for behind closed doors, More power to you.
You should like you should always. You can't be grudge
somebody for doing that. I understand why they're trying to
maximize their money. And yes, negotiations can get ugly, but
don't put that out in public because the public doesn't
know or care. Like they just see that and they're
(18:18):
just like, what is this? And then you know, you
look at Collie, You're saying what they came back with
was nowhere near what we asked for. So we wanted
to show this or whatever I think was it. Asia
Wilson said, we mean business and we're gonna demand everything.
We're going to keep going till we get what's right
and their presence and what they were doing. That's that's
what that was. It's like, just understand that no one
(18:39):
watching understood any of that, So like who were you
trying to win over there? Like maybe the View will
do a topic on it on Monday, but like outside
of that, no one is going to cover this. It's
not going to like ignite pot news and change anything
like this. That's wear those shirts to the meetings. That's
(19:00):
because those people actually understand what you're doing. You doing
this out in public, It's not like this is not
yas queen, like it doesn't work like that when the
public has no idea what you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Well, i'll tell you what, j mart I. Actually, now
that we've kind of gone down this road. I do
have one more question for you about this situation. For
people who missed it. WNBA All Star Game was this evening.
Not sure how many people cared since Caitlin Clark was
eliminated from the game with an injury, tickets were down
over fifty percent from Thursday to Friday. I haven't seen
(19:35):
an updated figure yet, but I do want to come
back and continue this conversation because I want to ask you, Jmart,
what do you think the NBA thinks about all of this?
And what do you think Adam Silver and the powers
that be that actually make money think about that.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
We'll discuss that next. This is Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Four time WNBA All Star Britty HIGs is here.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Give it up for Brittany, everybody.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
I'm I'm joking around. That's my friend's wife.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
I knew none of you knew WNBA players.

(21:19):
before the break, we were talking about WNBA All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
No, nothing that happened on the court.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Nobody actually cares about that, but the story out of
Indianapolis WNBA players in pregame, we're wearing shirts that said
pay us what you owe us. Of course, the issue
there with the WNBA. They are in the middle of
CBA negotiations. By the way, The issue is that they
don't make any money, so I don't know how they
(21:46):
can pay what you owe unless it's either zero or
you're paying them back. Jaymart really quickly, I just want
to ask you, like, what do you think of What
do you think that the NBA League office thinks of this?
Or maybe maybe not even the league office is the
right answer, Maybe it's the owners.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
I just it's one thing.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
You know, it's one thing to have this league operate
at a loss, and you know it's listen, I'll just
say it. I don't know if this sounds bad or not,
but I think it's kind of a noble cause. I
think it's a good thing that they've done this in
the past. You know, to me, it's no different than
you know, the football team at your favorite college subsidizing
you know, not only softball and gymnastics, but also men's
(22:33):
sports like tennis and golf and whatever. But I bring
it up because it's one thing to subsidize something, it's
another thing for those benefiting from your subsidization. I don't
know if I said that word right, but benefiting from
it to not appreciate it at all. And I guess
my question is, like, I know, we could talk like
(22:54):
pie in the sky hypotheticals like I don't think the
NBA is shutting down the WNBA because they whine too much,
But it's like, what do you think that that the
people that are actually paying to keep this league afloat
think about this whole situation.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
Yeah, that's a good question because it seems like, again,
like we talked about in the first segment, so much
of what gets said about the WNBA, from just whatever
the storylines are are almost all negative. Almost all of
it is bad. And generally speaking, I mean, a lot
of people have made their living turning that league into
(23:29):
joke content on their radio programs for a decade or more,
and it, you know, to some degree that has shifted.
But for a long time, I'm sure you've probably saw
an eyed this and said, yeah, you know, it's good
that we it's good that we're doing this. But it's
starting to it's like every time they have a have
(23:52):
a way to do something, they're shooting themselves in the foot.
That's why when we talked about this last year, if
I was Adam Silver. I'm calling people behind closed doors
into my office. I'm like, I don't care what problem
you have with Caitlin Clark, and you can get over it.
You guys exist because we allow you to exist in
terms of the money that we've put in, the funding
that we have put in for this league. You have
(24:13):
places to play because you're playing in NBA buildings and
all this other kind of stuff. You need to use
this opportunity to maximize profit to actually maybe be able
to grow the league through this individual, as opposed to
trying to cut her off at the knees left and right.
So I mean, I just feel like it's probably an
eyesore and it's probably a sore spot for a lot
(24:36):
of people in the NBA office if you actually gave
them true serum, they'd never say it out loud. But
you have to look at this and just say, man,
is the juice even worth to squeeze at this point
in time because they're not helping us, They're not doing
anything that's actually going to make anything better. They're actually
making everything worse. They haven't even done the most basic
(24:57):
of things to grow their league, and we're talking about expansion.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
I know, I know what?
Speaker 4 (25:05):
What is? What? What universe? Are these people living? Man?
Speaker 3 (25:09):
It's amazing.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
It's funny you mentioned like, you know how many players
could the average person name? Obviously, I think that that
number is is obviously very small. I'd be curious, like
how many. I'm not trying to be a jerk about it,
but like there were let me put it this way,
after I saw the T shirts, I actually did tune
into the WNBA All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Now, part of it was I knew we were coming
on air.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
If this was a if I didn't work on Saturday
nights in sports talk radio, I wouldn't have rushed to
my TV.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
But I bring it up.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Because I'll say, this is like, there are a lot
of girls I didn't really recognize, Like I think you
don't say, well, I'll say that because of what we do.
I do now know what Asia Wilson looks like. I
do know Page Beckers, obviously, I know Caitlin Clark, I
know Angel Yeah, yep, she's won Breonna Stewart. Okay, so
(26:05):
that's like six. There was a lot of girls there
who I'm sure lovely. Like I'm gonna say, this is
gonna make me a bad Husky Nofisa Collier played for
Ukon for four years. Ah, you know, you gave me
four w NBA players in one TV lineup. I don't
even know if I could uh pick pick her out.
And I think she's about to win the league MVP.
So it's kind of stated, not really, not really anything
(26:27):
that has to do with anything. It's just something that
popped up in my mind as I was thinking about this,
and as I was thinking about expansion, and as I
was thinking about you know, we need more and we
need this and we need that. It's like, again, you know,
it's funny. We talked about this a few weeks ago.
Cayn Clark's played in Chicago on a Saturday night. Uh,
(26:47):
she doesn't play. Tickets drop. I forget what it was,
but I remember the get in price was like six bucks.
And then tonight, as I said, from Thursday, when she
was announced officially out to Friday, tickets dropped over fifty.
I wonder what they were. And again, I know this
is a very cliche point, but when we have a
situation like this of pay us what you owe us,
(27:09):
it is.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
Pretty mind boggling that there really is.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
And I know we know this, but one girl that
moves the needle, and everybody else is just kind of
a replaceable part. And I think that plays into the
fact that, as you mentioned, we're now talking about expanding
a product that I don't think anybody really wants expansion
of us.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
No. I mean again, like you you have one player,
so you should probably be contracting the league in terms
of I'm talking about recognizable Again. It sounds harsh because
I understand these talent. These are talented women, I truly do, but.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
It just matter.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
There's very talented people in walks of life that we
don't care about, like and that don't get paid. I'm
trying to think of an analogy, and one's not coming
to my head. But it's like there's probably, uh, you know,
there's really talented people that play the steel drums. They're
still playing on the sidewalk in Times Square, you know,
(28:06):
hoping to get a couple bucks, you know what I'm saying.
And it's like, yeah that the point is is like,
it's great that you're talented, but to the core fundamental
part of this conversation, you have to have a talent
that is monetizable and that people care about.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
If you're asking for more money.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Now, you know the guy that plays steel drums, maybe
he just loves playing steel drums, maybe whatever, And maybe
he or she's okay with Hey, I'm you know, I'm
just doing this as a part time thing. These women
are tangibly asking for more than they are already getting
in a situation where literally no one other than one
maybe too, if you include Angel Reese, actually create any revenue.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
Yeah, I mean that's right. I just I don't see
I don't see anyone. Well, I'm sure some people are,
but the general consensus that are listening to us right
now are just nodding in agreement, like nothing that we're
saying is potentially or or really even lukewarm as a take,
like this is just basic reality, like all of this is.
(29:06):
And so wearing the shirts that try to get you
more money in front of a public that doesn't probably
think that they may think that you're making more than
you are, because to be honest, we understand you're not
making a ton of money as a WNBA player, at
least based on your salary and all that kind of stuff.
But at the same time, I bet they still think
you're overpaid, just because outside of Caitlyn Clark. I don't
(29:30):
think any I don't think any of them are draws
pretty much at all. Like name one as good a
player as Aja Wilson is, is she a draw? Like
if you just put her a picture up and said, hey,
they're playing X team on Saturday, I mean, what are
the ratings going to be? Almost not at all, They're
going to be non existent. So it's an unfortunate truth,
(29:52):
but it's a truth. Nonetheless. Unfortunately, if you're a fan
of the WNBA or you're in that league, you still
don't have a league, but you do have a Tiger Woods,
but you're not taking advantage of it.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
Don't disagree, by the way, I just looked it up
for fun. The next Las Vegas Aces home game, twenty
three dollars getting priced, so and it's not a big
aread to either. So it's just it is what it is.
We've been made enough to the WNBA girls. But again,
when you wear T shirts for people just joining us,
WNBA All Star Game was Saturday night, the players, every
(30:26):
player was doing it too, wearing T shirts that said
pay us what you owe us. Of course, they are
in the middle of CBA negotiations and Remember we are
in year thirty plus of the WNBA have yet to
turn a profit. Fox Sports Radio eritors Jason Martin broadcasting
live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. One man who
(30:46):
always earns his paycheck. Let's get it over the new
to say, we gotta pay you what we owe you
because you earn your paycheck. Tell us what we missed
besides the WNBA all start paycheck.
Speaker 8 (30:55):
What is that you're talking about?
Speaker 3 (30:56):
Oh, Anie Arnie didn't hit his stamp of approval.
Speaker 9 (30:59):
This serios thinks he's in church. That's always good for
a chuckle. By the way, I love the fact that
you brought up the word monetizable because that is so
key to this entire discussion, because teachers should be paid more. Unfortunately,
they do a job that's not monetizable. It's a public service.
(31:20):
It makes society better. But it's not like you know
those private stores where if they get big income then
that you know, see where I'm going with this. Yeah,
it's just you know, I could go to our industry.
Not everybody who's making the most money on the air,
radio or TV happens to be the best host. But
there's something monetizable out there. Not every football coach in
(31:43):
the SEC is the best football coach in the whole country.
But to say the least, the conference is monetizable. The
NBA has an agreement with its players union to split
about fifty to fifty the basketball related income. Of course,
the new TV contract that starts next season for the
NBA is worth almost seven billion dollars a year.
Speaker 8 (32:07):
Need we say more?
Speaker 9 (32:08):
We did have the WNBA All Star Game tonight, Team Collier,
a winner one fifty one to one thirty one, the
FISA Collier Game MVP, scoring a record thirty six points.
I'll talk about this morn in an hour. But they
did have some other rules for tonight's game that aren't
regular season rules that picked up the pace and caused
(32:29):
more three point attempts and caused a whole lot more
offense and in the end a record setting offensive total.
Scottie Scheffler leads the Open by four strokes. In Major
League Baseball, the Phillies Kyle Schwarber hit a Grand Slam
as thirty second homer this year. Phils beat the Angels
nine to five. Well, the Mets were losers at home
today five to two to the Reds, so the Philly
(32:50):
is now a game and a half over the Mets
in the L East. Toronto beat San Francisco sixty three.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
Today.
Speaker 9 (32:56):
The Blue Jays are first in the AL East, still
three games over the Yanks, who hit a grand slam
top of the ninth. Trent Grisham Yankees won at Atlanta
twelve to nine. There are two late games. The Brewers
now lead the Dodgers in LA eight to five. In
the top of the eighth, LA Shoheo Tani with a
two run homer his thirty third Seattle leads Houston four
(33:16):
to two. In the top of the sixth inning, Houston
third baseman Essak Paradis left with an apparent hamstring injury.
The Cubs, in the Fox TV game for most of
the country tonight, shut out Boston six Not think the
Cubbies hit five solo homers. Arizona's au henne Yo Suarez
with two more long balls. He has thirty three. Arizona
beat Saint Louis ten to one. Wins for the A's
(33:38):
and the Rockies. Tampa Bay, with three in the bottom
of the eighth, beat Baltimore four to three. Texas sent
Detroit to a six straight loss four to one, and
in the quarterfinals of the Women's Soccer Euros. Germany won
on penalty kicks, eliminating France. The semi start on Tuesday
on Fox TV. It'll be England against Italy and then
on Wednesday, Germany against defending World Cup champ You in Spain.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Back to you, Thank you very much, Steve Sager.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
This is Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday Eritors Jason Martin,
broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
We'll come back.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
We'll talk about the you know, you think you think
the w NBA players sounded silly today? You know who
was silly? That astronomer CEO. We gotta talk about. Yeah,
we gotta talk about him. And there's a sports twist
to it that we will get to in just a moment.
That's next Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Welcome back, everybody.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Fox Sports Radio er Torris Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
I yeah, yeah, we know what this is. It's coldplay.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Uh yeah, By the way, I know, we're off WNBA.
We gotta get to cold play. Somebody just sent me
a picture. It was obviously photoshopped. It's the caption says,
if the WNBA actually paid them what they owed them,
and it's all the shirts say. Instead of pay us
what you owes, it says I owe the NBA money.
(35:11):
So those are the shirts that they should be wearing.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
But I was thinking about it was just like, pay
you what we owe you. Well, then I guess it
means I'm not going to watch because I don't think
I owe you paying attention.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Yeah, or just I guess they're playing for free now
because nobody owes them anything, because right anyway, weak it's
cold Play, certainly, you know, I'll say this gotta be
the biggest story in just America this week.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
I mean about that, but it's a big story.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Well, you know, I mean take out. I don't know politics,
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
I just know. I mean there's that one guy that
may or may not have killed himself a few years ago.
That was a pretty big story this week.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
I guess this is all right. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
My wife literally was like I came home the other day,
she like, did you see this guy the concert? I'm like, yes,
I saw it at the concert, So we've all seen
by now, or most I would assume Coldplay concert what
would have been Wednesday night in Boston. Uh, there's you
know guy there just so happens to be a CEO.
(36:18):
He he was there with the head of his HR team,
Andy Byrom is his name.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
Andy Byron is his name.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Oh yeah, he got caught on the kiss cam with
his head of HR. He has since resigned, obviously. His
story is a few days old now why we're talking
about it. A little bit of the sports world has
certainly had some fun with this. I saw on Friday
night the Philly at the Phillies game. The Philly fanatic
(36:46):
they quote unquote caught him on the kiss cam and
you know, he tried to hide. The Savannah Bananas did something.
I want to give credit to Mike Mike mahilik In,
who of course is one of our listeners. We appreciate him.
He's out in Texas. He sent us a video as
well of one of these minor league teams. I can't
(37:09):
see which one, but they actually did the coldplay cam
and it was just everybody kind of doing the thing
where they're cuddling up and then they hide and all that.
America and I would say our sports teams have certainly
kind of run with this story. I don't know if
you have any bold takes on it, Jamart, but with
the baseball twist and the sports twist, I felt like
(37:31):
it was especially after we were so tough on the WNBA,
felt like it was a nice, nice way to end
the hour.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Do you have any strong.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Opinions on the Coldplay situation in Boston this week?
Speaker 4 (37:43):
I wonder if anybody was just like, man, if you're
gonna do it, do it somewhere that's not Coldplay. Yeah
that seventh they kind of like Coldplay in twenty twenty five.
Oh sure, Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like this
wasn't a post mall Own concert or something like that.
Like I imagine there were some people that made that joke.
But larger point. First off, the fact that it's an HR. Yes,
(38:06):
that's my big that's that's probably my first thing about
it is like, so the human research. I guess you
didn't think that it was going to be an HR
issue because a person that would have made it an
issue was actually involved. But yeah, not good, and like
you can't go somewhere to that public. I understand that
there's that many people. How are you going to get caught? Well,
(38:28):
you just are first off, you're doing something you shouldn't
be doing, so honestly, you getting away with it at
that point. Who knows. But I just in terms of
the sports side and mocking it, I don't know. Society
is so coarse now you just can't be surprised by it.
And at some point everybody laughed at this because it
(38:49):
was just so ridiculous and so over the top. And
so you know, the sports team's having fun with it
or whatever. Is it in great taste? No, And I
mean infidel and adultery is about as bad as it gets.
But in this case, the sports guy's doing this. I
think that the story had more of a tabloid field
than anything else, and so as a result, it kind
(39:11):
of was more of a cultural story than a news story.
It was more a Harvey Levin story than it was
something else. And so, you know, taking what was relevant
into culture and doing something with it at a sporting event.
I can understand why that would happen. I don't think
there would be a whole lot of people would say
(39:32):
that maybe we shouldn't do that. I don't really think so,
because I think most people were laughing at this story
more than shaking their head at it.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
Yeah, obviously, look, you know, there's obviously families involved that
had nothing to do with it.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
My big takeaways were a couple of things.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
One, yeah, if you know, not in favor of marital infidelity.
I'm anti marital infidelity, just like I'm anti kicking.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
All that, but.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Probably don't do it somewhere in front of seventy thousand
people the hr thing. The other thing I said this
the Oday, does anyone actually like kiss cam? Because kiss
cam is either yes, you're with your significant other and
there's a lot of pressure for the cameras, or it's
like an awkward first date, or you're in the friend zone,
or you're with somebody that you're not with.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
It's just all weird.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Fox Sports Radio er Torist State Spart. We'll talk NFL next.
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (40:26):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Welcome in everybody, Hour two tours and Martin Fox Sports Radio.
We are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Busy hour one. If you missed it, pay us what
you owe us. That is what WNBA players had on
their T shirts in the lead up to the All
Star Game. Not a good look. Jay Martin and I
(40:51):
had plenty to say about that. We will revisit it
about an hour from now. Do you want to switch gears?
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Though?
Speaker 2 (40:57):
J mart Football, You hear it in the distance. It's coming.
We're getting close.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
I think.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
What we'll do about twenty minutes from now will start
our division by division previews, basically talking over unders for
all of these teams. We'll start with the a NFC
East excuse me home of course, the reigning Super Bowl champs,
the reigning NFC runners up, the raining dysfunctional you know
what's the Dallas Cowboys. So we'll yeah, I don't even
(41:26):
know what word I was going for there, but they
are dysfunctional. We'll do all that about twenty minutes from now,
let's send out a couple news and notes from this week.
I want to get to Terry McLaurin in a minute
before I do, though, Jay mart we didn't talk TJ.
Watt and hour one, right, Yeah, that was obviously what
wednes Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
TJ. Watt agrees to a new deal.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Highest paid non quarterback in NFL history for the second
time in his career. He is staying with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
You know, I'm gonna throw it over to you. All
I'll say is I kind of felt like this was
a non story to me. Not not that it's not
a story, but when you sign Aaron Rodgers to be
(42:12):
your quarterback, right and you trade for DK Metcalf, besides
the fact that you are a defensive oriented organization, you're
not gonna skimp on TJ.
Speaker 3 (42:25):
Watt.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
So I don't know if you have any opinions outside
of that. And I don't mean to steal the thunder
with my own, but I just feel like this was
something that was always gonna happen. I felt like it
was gonna happen for training camp open because you don't
need that hanging over your head. So it gets done
on Thursday. I'm not surprised. Is there any element of
this that surprises you?
Speaker 4 (42:47):
No. I mean, I think that you were definitely going
to pay the guy. The question is what's it gonna mean.
They're clearly they seem to be going all in, like
they feel like they have to go ahead and do
this now, and and you know, good for him. I
still just don't. I just don't love that team this year.
(43:09):
I don't like him in that division, and I want
to know what the quarterback is going to do, And
if you ask me right now, I think it's going
to be underwhelmed. I think it's going to be at best,
he's going to be mediocre and we'll see kind of
how it goes. I mean, they brought in a guy
in DK Metcalf that you know he can have some
chemistry issues from time to time as well. And then
(43:31):
the only problem with t J. Watt has nothing to
do with him on the field. It's just he has
been banged up a little bit in the last couple
of years. Plays at a high level, but plays hard
and as a result sometimes you know, you can get
hurt and he has been. So you're committing to a
defensive side of the ball that I guess it is
going to win you some games. But how much is
it really going to win you? I think becomes sort
(43:52):
of the question. But in terms of it being a story, no,
it's not a story. You pay TJ. Watt if you
have the pitch work steel is you have the opportunity
to pay TJ. Wytt, You pay TJ Watt.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
So I agree with all of it. Let me ask
you quite. I actually asked Dan Byer this earlier in
the week. I get listen. Our job as sports you know,
sports talk commentators is to cover the biggest stories in sports.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
Okay, I get that, but I have kind of looked.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
At this differently that when I say that this, I
mean the topic of summer holdouts. I remember about three
four years ago I was I was in with Rob
Parker and Rob brought up what I thought was a
great point. He said, every single year, there's two three
four guys. Last year was Trent Williams, Brandon Ayuk, other
years it was Kyler Murray.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
It was this guy.
Speaker 2 (44:41):
Was that every single year there's somebody, Oh my god,
are they gonna get a deal? What if they don't
get a deal? Will they get a deal? And they
always end up getting a deal. I'm just scared. Do
you remember, like, because again we have to talk about TJ.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
Watt.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
I get it, We're gonna talk about Terry McLaurin in
a minute. But our are there examples of guys that
didn't ultimately get the deal? Because it feels like we
always spill a lot of ink on this in the
summertime and stuff always ends up getting done.
Speaker 4 (45:09):
Yeah, I can't really like nothing comes to mind. I
mean not really. Usually this stuff gets worked out. I
remember like the Deebo Samuel deal and well that year,
remember it was AJ Brown and it was McLaurin the
first time around, it was like all the receivers, the
DK Metcalf and all these guys just like, well, who's
gonna leave. Well, not that all of them have ended
(45:31):
up in the same spot, but generally speaking, they've all
been taken care of somewhere. And yeah, like most of
the time, when it's a no brainer player, it gets
worked out, and you realize when you start to look
at the clock there's a lot of time before the
season starts. There's not really any rush to get it
done immediately. You just have to get it done in time.
(45:54):
And a lot of these guys have no problem waiting
it out a little bit longer because it gives them
the ability not to have to be quite as soon.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
Interesting stuff there with TJ Watte, he is officially back
to your point, jmart I just I'm not excited about
the Steelers at all this year.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
Dude, I'm on record and I'm not changing it. I
believe they will finish under five hundred this year. I
believe it's gonna be. I believe that that will be
the storyline that they're just not very good.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
Let me ask you a question.
Speaker 2 (46:25):
If they finish under five hundred, do you think that
would finally be the year where Mike Tomlin either actively
chooses to leave or I don't think the organization would
fire him. But you never know, because my whole thing
is like they this is like the thing that they
are holding on to. Well, you know, we're not really
(46:49):
a contender, but we're not terrible either, and we always
finish above five hundred. And it's like, if they do
finish below five hundred, like put aside the Aaron Rodgers
element of it, obviously, I think that would mean the
end of his career. I'm just curious, do you think
that that would mean the end of Mike Tomlin in
Pittsburgh because that feels like the only it's like the
(47:11):
you know, marriage, where like they're holding on because the
kids still in high school and it's like.
Speaker 3 (47:16):
Well, you know, we'll reevaluate, you know whatever.
Speaker 2 (47:19):
I guess the point I'm trying to make is it
feels like that's the thing that's holding them together. Is
I mean, you can't fire Mike Tomlin always has a
winning record, always has he in the conversation for the playoffs,
and it's like, if they actually do go five hundred,
I feel like that would be the time that you
finally got to make a move and admit and start over.
Speaker 4 (47:36):
Well, yeah, I mean it might be time to rebuild,
and it might be time for a change of scenery
for Tomlin, for him to go somewhere else. I would
say that because Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback, a lot
of it may fall on him because at this point
I don't think that there is any kind of toughlong
coding around him anymore in any way, shape or form.
(47:58):
We saw what happened with the Jets, so you say
that's the Jets. Well, if he goes to the Steelers
and he doesn't play as well as Russell Wilson did
a year ago, then it's gonna be him. It's not
gonna be all this other stuff. It's gonna be Yeah,
his skills diminished, he got older, maybe he tuned out
a little bit of football here and there. The question
will just be again and this was gonna be true
(48:19):
with the Jets, but especially in Pittsburgh, Like, if it
doesn't go well early, is he gonna stay engaged? Apparently
he loves Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin loves him, so maybe
it's gonna be a marriage that works in that respect.
But I do think that there is cover for Tomlin
in that Aaron Rodgers changes everything, and I don't know
(48:39):
that it means for the better, because we got to
see what he looks like on the field and how
he's working with whatever the unit's gonna be on offense
for them. Is he going to be protected or is
this gonna be a scenario where a lot of it
is just gonna fall on him and you're just gonna say, Okay,
he's just not the guy that he once was or
even fifty percent of that. And that's kind of where
I land is. I just don't think he is going
(49:00):
to prove out to still be particularly good. I'm not
saying it's gonna be a bad quarterback, but I think
at best he's gonna be average. And you can't get
what you need out of an average Aaron Rodgers or
an average anybody at this stage of the game. And
I think that's gonna that's going to prove a lot.
And if tom Win handles himself the way Toman always does.
(49:22):
Then he could come back. He may not want to,
though it might be Tom to step away or retire,
even go do something else. But you are getting to
the point, if you are the Steelers, where you've got
to hit the reset. But I agree because you haven't
been able to find a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
Yeah, it just feels like I get like again I do.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
I'll say I'm a little bit more understanding of guy
has won a Super Bowl, dealt with a lot of
nonsense clearly behind the scenes, and the team is never
an embarrassment. So like, I think there are some that
are like you should have moved off of them three
years ago. And I actually do sort of understand that argument,
especially when you consider how long it's been since they've
(50:04):
actually been a true contender. But I also understand the
other side of you know, how many can't miss you know,
young guys or you know who would even want the
job if you're starting over, you don't have a quarterback whatever.
Really quickly, we're gonna in about ten minutes from now,
start talking NFC East and do some over understuff. And
speaking of NFC East, the the other marquee holdout prior
(50:28):
to t J. Watt committing long term? Is is Terry McLaurin.
Terry McLaurin, of course, with the Washington Commanders, five straight
seasons of over one thousand yards receiving, going into the
last year of his deal, he wants a new deal.
I'm a little dubious that this one gets gets to
(50:49):
a place where he doesn't ultimately get it. But you
know what, before we get to the Terry McLaurin conversation, Ian,
do we have the sound of Terry McLaurin. Let's go
ahead and play Terry McLaurin right now.
Speaker 10 (50:58):
I've been pretty frustrated. I'm not going to Everything that
has transpired up to this point has been disappointing and frustrating.
I wanted to continue my career here. I've created my
life here. This has been somewhere where I've always wanted
to be.
Speaker 2 (51:12):
All Right, So I have a take on that. That
was Terry McLaurin talking about his contract status with the
Washington Commanders. Before I get to my thoughts on it,
I would love to hear your perspective, Jamin.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
Yeah, Look, I think mclaurin's really good and he's finally
got a quarterback that can get him the ball consistently,
and he kind of showed again last year what he
can do in the right offense, especially where he's being maximized.
I think that right now the key has to be,
we got to maximize this time we have with Jaden Daniels.
(51:43):
We've got to make absolutely certain that we get the
most out of this before we have to open up
that bank account and back up the brinks truck to
make him our guide long term. Right now, you've got
him in that beautiful window where you can do a
lot around him and hopefully you can win with him
a couple of times where you've already really won with
(52:03):
the investment and things like that. You've got a shot
right now with him being you know, on the cusp
of you know, top five ish status in the league.
If he continues to progress in terms of his quarterback level,
you just you've got to give him every weapon. And
they have done some things here in this offseason, but
the one thing that you can't do is have that
(52:23):
guy be unhappy with what's going on, because they did
have a good synergy last year and I just don't
think you want to wreck that shop. And because you
have him on a rookie deal. You just you gotta
find a way to make this happen.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
Yeah, no, that's actually my exact takeaway is this would
have been the same conversation if we had talked J TJ.
Watt excuse me, the last couple of weeks, I would
have said the same thing is that you don't In
the case of the Steelers, you don't sign Aaron Rodgers
and trade for DK Metcalf and I don't even mention
you trade for Jalen Ramsey as well, and then not
pay TJ.
Speaker 4 (52:55):
Watt.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
And it's the same with McLaurin. Is he's great at
what he does. He's been a commander, slash redskin his
entire career by all accounts. You know, good guy, good
locker room guy, all that, and I just think it
comes down I just don't.
Speaker 3 (53:09):
It's the same thing I just said with TJ. Watt.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
You don't trade for Deebo Samuel, you don't sign von
Miller who I know, it's only a one year deal.
You can get out of it quickly. They clearly believe
that last year was not a fluke, that they are
a team that can compete, especially with Jydon Daniels on
this rookie contract. So I actually don't have a tonhels
to add. I think, to me, my sentiment is a
(53:34):
lot like yours.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
J Mart.
Speaker 2 (53:36):
You have Jane and Daniels on a rookie contract, You
have made all of these other moves that reflect that
you believe you can win right now. I don't It
doesn't make sense to me why you wouldn't eventually pay
Terry McLaurin. You know, I don't know if it's the
highest paid wide receiver all. I don't know what that
looks like. But just in general, I don't know how
this doesn't get done sometime soon.
Speaker 4 (53:56):
Yeah, I think it will. Again, I think you got
plenty of time. Everybody's leveraging this thing. And what mclauren said,
I think he will get his money. And I think
that you know, they're going to go into the season
and it's going to be them and the Eagles. We
haven't done the over under. We will, but I mean,
I think we all look at that and say, I
think it's a two team race. I'll due respect to
(54:16):
the Dallas fans out there, but I mean, let's be
serious here, Like we have to have integrity on this program.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
Well, I'll tell you what we'll do that next. I
think Dallas fans are the most realistic about the state
of their team.
Speaker 4 (54:28):
But yeah, that's probably true.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
Actually, yes, Well, we're going to come back.
Speaker 2 (54:32):
When we do, we're going to start our division by
division previews. We're right around eight weeks away to the
start of the NFL season. We're going to start with
the NFC East, home of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles,
Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys. By the way, if you want
to share your thoughts on any of those teams, if
you're a Cowboys fan listening, go ahead check us out
(54:53):
at Aaron ud score Torres on Twitter and j Mart Radio.
We will come back. We will talk NFC East, will
do some over unders.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
Quick break, be right back, Welcome back, everybody.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
Fox Sports Radio Eric tords Day Smartro broadcasting live from

pop up at the top of your screen. All right,
So it is July technically July twentieth on the East Coast,
July nineteenth. Everywhere else training camps, chargers have reported. There's
a couple other teams that reported today, and by the
(55:49):
end of the week, everybody will have reported. So what
we did this time last year was we went ahead
and basically previewed every single team the over underwin total.
Speaker 3 (56:01):
Now, Jmart, we did tallly these.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
I don't think we ever actually saw who ended up
having more right selections and wrong selections. But I bring
it up because we're going to go division by division
over the next eight weeks.
Speaker 3 (56:14):
In the lead up.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
Two week one, I think it's only appropriate that we
start with the NFC East, home of the reigning Super
Bowl chap So, Mary, give us a little music. Ian
producer Ian tell us who we're talking about. First, I
can take a guess who has the highest over underwin
total in that division?
Speaker 11 (56:34):
We can we can start with that, and that would
be the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, I actually do have your
guys's results from last year.
Speaker 3 (56:43):
Tell us right now, we need to know what's at
stake this year.
Speaker 11 (56:45):
So it looks like if we go to the NFC specifically, Aaron,
you went three and one in the division. Jmrd, you
actually went four and oh last year?
Speaker 4 (56:55):
Oh look at that.
Speaker 3 (56:55):
What did I take Philly under?
Speaker 11 (56:58):
Looks like you went Philly under yep, and that was
your one l in the division.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
I was not high on. Do you have the actual
over under win totals from last year? Like the number
that we gave out, Yeah, Philly was ten and a
half wins?
Speaker 3 (57:10):
Okay, and what about everybody else? I'm just curious.
Speaker 11 (57:12):
Let's see, the Cowboys were over under nine and a half,
Commanders six and a half. The under heck of a
line there for the Commanders six and a half and
a half, Giants over under six and a half as well.
Speaker 3 (57:25):
All right, well, now we know it's at stake. I
went three and one.
Speaker 2 (57:28):
I gotta go four and oh this year, tell us,
what's so Philadelphia is how many?
Speaker 3 (57:33):
What was it this year? Is eleven and a half?
All right?
Speaker 2 (57:36):
J marts, it's your the reigning champ of the NFC
East Oh my god, you know everything. Why don't you
just go ahead and go first?
Speaker 4 (57:43):
All right? So who are we going with first? Again?
Speaker 8 (57:46):
Eagles?
Speaker 4 (57:47):
Eagles And it was what eleven and a half?
Speaker 3 (57:50):
Eleven and a half?
Speaker 8 (57:50):
Correct, eleven and a half.
Speaker 4 (57:55):
So the teams this year they're playing the AFC West
in the NFC North. Yes, that's not great.
Speaker 3 (58:02):
I noticed that. Yes that is.
Speaker 4 (58:04):
That is not great. But the Eagles are. You're defending
champs for a reason, and it's not like they've gotten
progressively worse. I think the whole thing's gonna come down
to whether or not, specifically Sakuon, Barkley and Jay when
Hurts can get through the season without getting banged up.
Sae Quon's had his injuries in the past, but last
year he was super healthy. If Herts is able to
(58:27):
stay healthy as well, I see no reason why they
couldn't do it. It's a tough schedule, and of course they'll
be playing a first place schedule, but like I'm gonna
say over, I'm gonna say over.
Speaker 2 (58:39):
So I'm gonna say over to because yes, the schedule
is insane. I mean, even before the end of September
at kc Rams at home at Tampa. Now there's also
the season opener on a Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys,
which I think they'll take care of business. They do
get ten days off before that Super Bowl rematch in
KSE and then oh, by the way, they close with
(59:02):
how about this final three? At Washington at Buffalo, at
Washington at home. So a lot of tough games right
at the start, a lot of tough games right at
the finish. You also get Lions at home, at Packers
at Chargers. It's a very tough schedule. But over under
of eleven and a half. It's hard for me to
(59:24):
see them going eleven and six. That's you know, so
to me, I don't. I think the defense is so
good that even if Saquon takes the natural step back,
and even if Jalen Hurts takes a little bit of
a step back, I think the defense is so good
I think it wins them a bunch of games. I'm
gonna go over as well. Who's up next to you?
Speaker 3 (59:44):
Next up?
Speaker 11 (59:44):
Let's do the Dallas Cowboys. They're over under set at
seven and a half.
Speaker 4 (59:49):
Good grief, that's low. It is, I mean for a
Dallas team that is awfully low. But you look at it.
What do they have that's it's really winnable based on
the team that we think they're fielding, plus this new
head coach. They're gonna lose to the Eagles in Week one.
They might beat the Giants that Bears game. I don't
(01:00:11):
love that for them Green Bay, I don't love that
for them. Jets, I think they would win that. Panthers,
I think they would win that. But I'm like looking
down the schedules, like, what's guaranteed. They've got one run
from November the twenty third through December through pretty much
the end of the season. Outside of their last game
they go Eagles, Chiefs at Lions, Vikings, Chargers at Commanders.
(01:00:37):
I'm gonna take it under. I'm gonna take the under here.
I do not think they will win seven and a
half games.
Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
Seven and a half is the number one.
Speaker 4 (01:00:43):
I know they won't win seven and a half games,
but they're not gonna win eight.
Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
Games any seven and a half. And these are bet
MGM lines.
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
By the way, if anyone could do it, it's the
Cowboys hitting that half total. So a couple thoughts here,
So I went back and looked it up because I
think there's a little bit of a revisionist history on
like how things started.
Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
They were three and five with Dak healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
Yes, that included, by the way, a blowout home loss
to the New Orleans Saints among other teams. I lost
their schedule here for half a second, give me a second,
but yeah. They went three and five to open the
season last year, and again blowout loss to New Orleans,
a quote unquote close went to Baltimore, or close loss
(01:01:25):
to Baltimore where they had to rally destroyed by the Lions.
We all remember that game. The Lions were running fake
reverse double whatevers. The point I'm trying to make they
were three and five with Dak. They have downgraded at coach,
which is kind of incredible because Mike McCarthy, you know,
wasn't exactly Vince Lombardi and listen, and we talked about
(01:01:48):
this at the time, Jay mart I vividly remember talking
about it. George Pickens couldn't get along and fall in
line with Mike Tomlin and it's like, say what you
want about Mike Tomlin, and we said it all last segment.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
In general, he.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Is able to keep you know, if hot heads the
right word, I don't know what the right word is.
Speaker 4 (01:02:05):
But dude, Antonio Brown. People didn't know Antonio Brown was nuts. Yes,
until you see what's happened since Yes, and.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
So I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
So I'm gonna I'm gonna actually, you know, I have
a feeling we're gonna think identically on a lot of these.
But I gotta go under of seven and a half. Seven,
you know, seven and ten feels about right, because where
where are they better than last year? I don't trust Dak.
I think the coaching is going to be worse. So
(01:02:37):
give me the under of seven and a half. We'll
come back. We'll look at the Washington Commanders and the
New York Football Giants, the team only a mother could love.
We'll discuss them next for you do though, let's get
it over the news desk, Steve Desager, what is trending, guys?
Speaker 9 (01:02:52):
The decision is in Many. Pakiaw was fighting tonight in
Las Vegas. Yes, he had four years off that Many Pacio,
at age forty six, has fought to a draw against
Mario Barrios, who keeps his WBC welterweight title. Two judges
had the scoring one fourteen to one fourteen.
Speaker 8 (01:03:11):
The other scored it for Barrios.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
As Ian just asked me how soon until Jake Paul
is online one with Minikak Real quick?
Speaker 4 (01:03:18):
Long, I that's about ten more years.
Speaker 3 (01:03:20):
I hate to ask this. Yeah, it is probably about.
Speaker 4 (01:03:22):
That's the Shane Gillis joke, but it's still accurate.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
Real quick.
Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
Was this a money thing? I hate to ask, but
I know Pacquiao. You know he helps a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (01:03:32):
I mean, has it? Has it come out? Is he
just doing it for the love of the game or
does he.
Speaker 8 (01:03:37):
That's exactly what it sounds like.
Speaker 3 (01:03:38):
Actually good for him.
Speaker 9 (01:03:40):
His career record is sixty two to eight with three draws. Now, wow,
that is an enormous amount of fights. Age forty six,
sixteen years older than his opponent tonight. And meanwhile, we've
got UFC three eighteen's finale coming up with the champ
Max Hollyway again Stuston in New Orleans tonight for one
(01:04:03):
last time for him. Boxer Alexander Usik won in London today.
He's the undisputed heavyweight champion, owning all four title belts now.
He knocked out Daniel Dubois from England in the fifth
round attendance at Wimbley Stadium. Was about ninety thousand. Usik
has already beaten former champs Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury
twice each. The next IndyCar Race is Sunday on Fox
(01:04:25):
TV on the Streets of Toronto, and then Women's Soccer
Euros semifinals on Fox Tuesday, England against Italy, and then
on Wednesday it'll be Germany against defending World Cup champion Spain.
The Germans won on penalty kicks to finish the quarterfinals today,
eliminating France. In Major League Soccer, two more goals for
Lionel Messi Miami, a five to one winner against New York.
(01:04:48):
The WNBA All Star Game was its highest scoring ever,
one fifty one to one thirty one. Team Collier takes
it over Team Caitlin Clark. Clark, of course injured Nafisa
Collier Game MVP, scoring a record thirty six points. Scotty
Scheffler leads the Open by four strokes after a third
round sixty seven in Northern Ireland. Scheffler, the last ten
(01:05:10):
times he's led after fifty four holes, has won the event.
Speaker 3 (01:05:13):
He took the.
Speaker 9 (01:05:14):
PGA Championship in May. Scheffler has been ranked number one
in the world longer than anyone since Tiger Woods. Rory
McElroy shot sixty six moved up to a tie for
fourth place. He was tied for twelve, so he's gone
from seven shots back to six back. Sergio Garcia had
barely made the cut for the weekend. He's tied for
fifty first. Bryson to Shamba up to a tie for
(01:05:34):
thirty fourth. Now Phil Mickelson shot seventy six overseas he
is tied for sixty sixth place, And we've got one
ball game still going. Houston holding on five to four
at Seattle in the bottom of the eighth inning. Milwaukee
has won its ninth straight game. In that winning streak,
they've beaten the Dodgers five straight times, including in La
(01:05:55):
again tonight eight seven over the Dodgers, even though show
Hail he hit a two run homer, his thirty third
of the season. Colorado and the A's with wins Arizona
ten to one over Saint Louis. The cub shut out
Boston six nothing in Tampa Bay with three runs bottom
of the eighth, beat Baltimore four to three, and finally
the Yankees in quite a ballgame one at Atlanta twelve nine. Tonight,
(01:06:19):
Trent Grisham a grand slam top of the ninth. The
Yankees were down five nothing going to the fifth inning
Anthony Volpe with two homers. The Yankees rally from five
to nothing down well, that's pretty rare in their history
to beat a National League team that way, including postseason,
It had only happened twice in Yankee franchise history. One
(01:06:41):
of those was famously against the Braves in the nineteen
ninety six World Series when they were down six nothing
and still beat them. There was also a summer interleague
game against the Pills in two thousand with a six nothing,
six run comeback, and by the way, Statsinc. Saying that
the Braves bullpen did something that's literally never happened in
(01:07:01):
Major league history until tonight. First off, the bullpen pitches
five innings, are less in the game, but still allows
twelve runs or more and walks at least four better
and allows for homer, and the bullpen gives up a
grand slam and loses the game. Yankees twelve nine.
Speaker 8 (01:07:17):
The final back to.
Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
You, Thank you very much. Steve Sager.
Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
Di Sega will be back in just a few moments
with his extended update. This is Fox Sports Radio aeron
tors Jason Martin taking it up till two am Eastern
where Bernie Fratto is out. Chris Plank will follow us.
Tell you what, Mary, give us a little more music,
put us in the mood Ian. Let's continue the conversation
on the NFC East over under win totals.
Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
Who's up next?
Speaker 11 (01:07:42):
All right, New York Giants are next. They're over under
a set at five and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:07:46):
What do we think.
Speaker 4 (01:07:49):
You go? This? S Tim Aaron.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
All right, so I did a little digging on the
New York Football Giants. First, let me see make sure
I have this math correct. Okay, five of their first
eight are on the road. That includes at Washington, that
includes at Philadelphia, also includes your Broncos, who I think
(01:08:12):
will be much improved, Jmartin. Among the home games that
they have, Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles, and then oh, by the way,
they get a home game with the San Francisco forty
nine ers in their ninth game of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
So how about this.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Okay, I'm just gonna read this to you at Washington
at Cowboys, Chiefs Chargers at home at Saints, Eagles at
home at Denver at Eagles forty nine Ers Bears, Packers
at Lions. That takes us to Thanksgiving. It also takes
(01:08:50):
us to a situation where I don't believe Brian Dabele
will still be the head coach at Thanksgiving. That schedule
is bananas. So what was it? Five and a half?
I think they're probably the worst team in the league.
I think they're in contention for the number one pick.
Maybe they play Jackson Dart early, who I don't think
is ready.
Speaker 3 (01:09:10):
I think they're really bad. I think it's under Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:09:13):
Look, I don't know if they're ready or not. But
you're you're you're You're dealing with either Jackson Dart or
Russell Wilson as your quarterback right now, or Jameis Winston
or Jamis Winston. Yes, worst team in the league. I'm
trying to think if there was somebody I might have
might have come up with, but I really can. I
(01:09:34):
think you're probably right. Somebody is gonna have to win
three games this year. There's gonna be a couple of
teams to do that. A lot of times when you
do these over unders, you don't realize that you have
given too many wins out there's not enough games, So
you have to pick a couple to have some really
brutal seasons. Here's one of them. I agree with you.
I think they're gonna be under real quick.
Speaker 3 (01:09:55):
Before we get to the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:09:57):
You know, you look at like even like the Jets stink,
but they have some very nice pieces, obviously, the two
guys that signed the big extension, Garrett Wilson saus Gardner,
among others outside.
Speaker 3 (01:10:11):
Of elite neighbors. I guess Carter, Yeah, yeah, well that's true.
Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
They did just draft him, so I just I don't
even know like where they're could let alone whatever. Plus
the schedule, plus the quarterback situation, I'm going under. Ian
give us the last one, all right, Yeah, I'd say
Andrew Thomas, but besides him, I left tackle not much. Yeah,
next up, Commanders last, but not least nine and a
half wins.
Speaker 3 (01:10:35):
They're set at right now, what do we think?
Speaker 8 (01:10:37):
Go ahead?
Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
To you, Ma, well, that feels like an over Yeah,
I mean, even if they take a step back from
what they did a season ago. I just I don't
see how they don't win double digits unless there's injuries.
Speaker 3 (01:10:49):
So I'll be quick. I actually agree with you.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
I think the other thing too, is given the schedule
with the NFC North and the AFC West, manageable schedule.
First four Giants at home at Packers won't be easy,
Raiders at home at Falcons. They also somehow draw the Seahawks,
the Dolphins, the obviously the Giants twice. Yeah, Seahawks, Dolphins,
(01:11:17):
Raiders plus two against the Giants and two against the Cowboys,
who I think are clearly the inferior team.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
I mean, I don't really have a ton else to add.
I think there could be that second year regression like
we saw from CJ. Stroud from Jordan Love last year.
Speaker 4 (01:11:35):
But like c J.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
Stroud regressed, they still want a bad division. And I
think even if Jaden Daniels takes half a step back,
even if the DBO things a little bit weird, I mean,
where are there again?
Speaker 4 (01:11:49):
It comes down to the injuries. I mean, if Stroud
doesn't have, if they don't have all the injuries like Houston,
I mean, even if he takes he may he's still
you might have still been right that he regressed, But
a lot of it was expedite didn't grown because of
all of just the other stuff that was going on
in Houston. That just you know, you couldn't control and
you couldn't plan for. So that's what I'm saying. As
(01:12:09):
long as there's not injuries in Washington, I don't think
it's going to be a dramatic step back because I
think Jaydon Daniels is legit.
Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
So I think we agreed on all four there. Ian
just read us off, so I don't remember the numbers,
but read it off for America where me and J.
Speaker 11 (01:12:24):
Mart are at all right, So first off was the
Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 3 (01:12:28):
Eleven and a half.
Speaker 11 (01:12:28):
Wins is their line right now in bet MGM.
Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
You both said over.
Speaker 11 (01:12:32):
Then we went to the Dallas Cowboys seven and a
half wins is what they're set out right now. You
both went under. The New York Giants five and a
half wins, you both went under. And lastly the Washington
Commanders nine and a half wins. You both said over.
Speaker 2 (01:12:46):
Thank you very much, Ian, and I appreciate I should
say I sort of appreciate you tabulating last year's result
until you told me I sucked and I lost to.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
J Martin and the NFCS. So all right, I'm joking.
Those are your words entirely. I did not say.
Speaker 4 (01:13:00):
Nine a man, I bet you're gonna get You're gonna
have some WS in weeks to come. I bet from
last year or so. We'll see, we'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:13:06):
We I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
Next week we'll do probably maybe the most interesting division
in football, the NFC North. So that's the NFC East,
NFC North next week. And to saga up next, this
is Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back, everybody, Fox Sports Radio
air tors Jason Martin, broadcasting live from the Fox Sports
(01:13:28):
Radio studios as we do every Saturday and to Sunday.
Right around this time, let's turn over the news desk.
Steve de Sager get us caught up on everything we
missed throughout the day today and yesterday and tomorrow and
everything we need.
Speaker 9 (01:13:41):
We'll get the w NBA comments in a moment, but
almost everything is final. In the majors, they're going to
the bottom of the nine. Seattle tied five to five
with Houston Mariners tied at scoring on a wild pitch
in the eighth inning. By the way, the third baseman
for Houston, Essach Paradis, left with a hamstring entry and
the late MLS game went to the Galaxy seemingly at
victory because they got two late goals to tie.
Speaker 8 (01:14:03):
Rival LAFC three to three. The final.
Speaker 9 (01:14:06):
Now we had the highest scoring WNBA All Star Game ever,
attending seventeen thousand in Indianapolis. Team Collier a winner over
Team Clark. Caitlin Clark injured did not play. The final
score was one fifty one to one thirty one. The
game MVP captain Nafisa Collier scored a record thirty six
(01:14:26):
points in nineteen minutes on the court. She was thirteen
of sixteen from the floor. However, there were some rules
that were different in this game just for tonight. The
shot clock was twenty seconds instead of twenty four. They
allowed a hockey like substitution for the offense. We you'd
have one player off and another come on without a
(01:14:47):
timeout like while things were going. They also had a
four point shot. They had a couple of circles on
each side.
Speaker 3 (01:14:54):
I notice, I said, I was trying to figure out
what that was.
Speaker 9 (01:14:56):
I mean, I clearly there were a lot of three
point attempts, and I've seen nothing that it actually delineates
how many were from three but and how many were
from four. But there was were two circles on each
offensive has located above the three point line at twenty
eight feet out, and apparently there weren't any free throw
(01:15:16):
shot in the game until the last two minutes. If
you got fouled, instead of going for the line to
the line for two, they just gave you the two
and moved the game along. So if you look at
the box score, it's like, wow, this team was sixteen
of sixteen from the line.
Speaker 8 (01:15:30):
Yeah, they didn't shoot any of those.
Speaker 9 (01:15:32):
Oh, interesting, so it was a high scoring game. There
were how many block shots in this game? The answer
is zero.
Speaker 3 (01:15:41):
It was bad.
Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
I had it on the background, like I said, and
it the WNBA. I feel like the players are just
trying to do a bad impression of NBA players, like
with the walk you know, they have the walk in
you know, red carpet stuff whatever, And it was the
same in the All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (01:15:56):
It's, Oh, we're gonna have fun and like, no, I'm
not gonna play defense. No I'm not going to go
for this rebound. You get the rebound and put.
Speaker 9 (01:16:02):
The layup back, and it's like there were five fouls
total in the whole guts.
Speaker 8 (01:16:06):
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 9 (01:16:07):
And how many let's call it, how many shot attempts
from beyond the arc. Tonight, it's a forty minute game.
Oh there were one hundred and twenty.
Speaker 2 (01:16:18):
Wow, I was gonna say eighty, and I was like, no,
that's two per minute.
Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
That can't be right.
Speaker 9 (01:16:24):
Each team with roughly sixty I'll call it three point
attempts including those four drives.
Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
From three per minute.
Speaker 8 (01:16:32):
That's bad, just astounding.
Speaker 9 (01:16:34):
So as far as the TV ratings, until last year's
record rating, it was by far the highest rating they
got last year. That was when the WNBA Stars beat
the US national team before they went to Paris. Before
the previous record high audience was one point four to
four million viewers, and that was over twenty years ago.
Last year's was three point four to four million viewers.
(01:16:57):
Baseball's All Star Game this week got over seven million viewers,
and that tied its lowest on record. Baseball is still
king of the All Star games in the ratings because
even the home run derby had a larger audience than
the NBA All Star Game or the Pro Bowl games
or this home run derby on Monday on Cable five
(01:17:17):
point seven million. The last NBA All Star Game was
four point seven million. Pro Bowl games four point seven million,
Hockey's not included in this this year because they did
something different. Of the very successful four Nations face.
Speaker 4 (01:17:32):
That was great.
Speaker 8 (01:17:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:17:33):
At the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League, seven games on
the Saturday schedule and it all ends tomorrow. It goes
from July tenth to July twentieth, which is Sunday. Sacramento
defeated Toronto ninety eight eighty eight for the Raptors. Jamal
Shed University of Houston had twenty four points twelve assists.
Veteran guard Marcus Smart agreed to a buyout with the Wizards.
He reportedly will sign with the Lakers. He was the
(01:17:56):
NBA's Defensive Player of the Year in twenty twenty two.
He's battled injuries last couple of seasons. Most NFL teams
will have their veterans report to training camp on Tuesday.
The preseason schedule starts with Chargers versus Lions in the
Hall of Fame Game July thirty. First those teams veterans
report to camp by this weekend. Bears quarterback Case Keenum
(01:18:16):
was placed on the non football injury list, but he
can join that club after passing a physical. Their first
practice is Wednesday, veteran edge rusher Von Miller is due
to officially sign with Washington on Monday, one year deal.
The Rams signed second round tight end Terrence Ferguson. Until
this year, no second round pick had ever received a
fully guaranteed contract. Turns out, the top eight selections in
(01:18:39):
round two got guaranteed money this year, the Saints giving
second round quarterback Tyler Shuck a fully guaranteed contract. What
about the Bengals first rounder defensive ends Samar Stewart is
still unsigned and the team's other rookies have now reported
to training camp. Stuart sat out mini camp because the Bengals,
who are trying to put in new word in his
(01:19:00):
contract to be able to avoid future guarantees. Unlike in
the past, it's a new tag for the team. They
I suppose have the upper hand, but this first rounder
has not signed. He's the only unsigned first rounder this year.
Even their second rounder signed today. And in Major League
Baseball again, the late game is five to five Houston
at Seattle in the bottom of the ninth. The Milwaukee
(01:19:23):
Brewers have won nine games in a row. They beat
the Dodgers eight to seven in LA and Mookie Bets.
The Dodgers shortstop not outfielder this year had the night off.
His batting average is too forty one. His career average
is to ninety one. This month, he's batting one eighty eight,
nine for forty eight at the plate. He got a
(01:19:44):
deserved night off. Perhaps he will finally turn it around.
But the Milwaukee Brewers now have a better record than
the Dodgers fifty eight and forty. The Dodgers are fifty
eight and forty one.
Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
Thank you very much, Steve Sayer. A lot of ground
cover there. We appreciate you. This is Fox Sports Radio
Air towards Jason Martin. One hour left, taking you up
till two a m. Eastern time. Chris Plank follows us.
We'll come back. I yeah, we have more to say
about the w NBA All Star Game. This is Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:20:14):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:20:17):
Welcome in everybody, our three tours and Martin Fox Sports Radio.
We are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
By the way, we're taking it up till two am Eastern.
Bernie Fratto out, Chris Plank is in. Cannot wait to
hear what Plank has to say about a busy day
(01:20:40):
in sports. Busy week in sports as NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:20:44):
Jamar feels like, hey, you know, I'm gonna get some.
Speaker 2 (01:20:47):
NFL cut content here by the time we're on air
next week, Uh, training camps are opening, all that good stuff.
So last real week without any football for a while,
thank goodness. Yes, but we got to talk about the
topic of the day, topic of the day in sports,
I guess. I mean, I don't know if it would
(01:21:08):
have been if we didn't have the pregame Shenanigans WNBA
All Star Game. Admittedly, I think interest, to say the least,
was down when Kayler Clark was announced out for the game.
Tickets dropped by fifty percent from Thursday to Friday, even
more so by the time the game tipped off today.
(01:21:31):
Don't know that we would have necessarily talked about very
much of anything to do with the WNBA All Star
Game tonight had we not had a pregame display by
all of the players. So the players, of course, are
in the midst of a cb I keep saying contract,
a CBA negotiation. In other words, the collective bargaining agreement.
(01:21:52):
Their collective bargaining agreement is up. They have just agreed
to a new TV rights deal. They want more money,
and so their way of expressing the fact that they
are not happy with the current state of the CBA deal.
I think Nafisa Coller even references at the end they
wore shirts that said.
Speaker 3 (01:22:09):
Pay us what you owe us.
Speaker 2 (01:22:13):
Pay us what you owe us is what the shirts
of all of these WNBA players said. Prior to tip
off on Saturday, Jamar.
Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
I got a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
Of thoughts on Brianna Stewart and Asia Wilson and Paige
Beckers and all these girls wearing these shirts. But what
are your thoughts on WNBA players paying wearing shirts that
say pay us what they owe us prior to the
start of the All Star Game.
Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
Well, again, I don't owe you anything. And you're wearing
the shirts for cameras. It's going to be on television
and people are going to see it, and they said,
what are you talking about? Because they don't know what's
going on. And here's the thing, they're not going to
go research it to find out because they don't care enough.
Like I don't begrudge them for trying to get what
they think they are worth behind closed doors. That's how
(01:23:00):
you negotiate. Good for them doing it in public when
the public has one nothing to do with it and
two doesn't really help your case. That's where I've got
my issue, like, not only is the public not going
to be able to help you in this case, but
the money that you have generated, the you know, being
(01:23:21):
in the red pretty much your entire existence at this point.
I mean, the fans are not They're not actually going
to butcher your case here. So again, this is more
than anything. It's just like, dude, it's your All Star weekend.
At least just try to show a good face to
the public that is going to watch it. Whoever it
is it's going to tune in to watch this thing.
(01:23:42):
Just go out there and play the best game you
can be, the most entertaining that you possibly can be.
Try don't turn it into some kind of a statement
moment because you don't have leverage and you don't have
the popularity to get away with this, Like you you
can't do this, You're not in position to do this.
There's probably you know, some you know, liberal media types
(01:24:07):
that are out there that are applauding all this, and
I'm just kind of like, just understand, you're shooting yourself
in the foot because you see this messaging. There's a
lot of casual fans that maybe they would have stopped
for five seconds until they found out Caitlin Clark went
in the game. She's wearing the shirt too. All Right,
I gotta go like there's not there's no there there.
That's what I said the first out. There's no reason
(01:24:28):
why anybody really is going to sit around and care
about this, So why are you displaying it to a
public that's not interested?
Speaker 3 (01:24:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
I think you know, to me, listen, there are ways
to you know, one negotiate and two even publicly negotiate.
I mean, we see this every time that there's some
sort of collective bargaining issue in the NBA, the NFL,
major League Baseball where you know, you league stuff in
this and that. I just don't think that is the way.
(01:25:01):
And the reason I don't think this is the way
is because a lot of what we talked about in
hour one is that I think here's here's the thing.
I don't think the public is on the player's side
on this one.
Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
Like it's one thing to protest whatever right is.
Speaker 2 (01:25:18):
Uh, it could be anything, could be political, could be social,
could be this, could be that, could be whatever, and
you might disagree with it, I might disagree with it whatever,
But if you have public sentiment, that's a little bit
of a different deal.
Speaker 3 (01:25:31):
I'd bring it up.
Speaker 2 (01:25:32):
Because is there anybody like yes, to your point, there's
a very small percentage of the media. There is a
very small percentage of you know, people that are advocate
for women's sports.
Speaker 3 (01:25:45):
I think the vast.
Speaker 2 (01:25:46):
Majority of people that even want to try and support
the WNBA, they also understand the basic economics of the
fact that this league has been going for thirty years
and has yet to turn a profit. And so that's
the thing to me is like, again, I don't love
(01:26:07):
my athletes being political, or my athletes wanting about money,
or my athletes whatever. But it's like, even when a
football player TJ. Watt holds out, it's like, oh, well, TJ.
Watt has like insane value to the Pittsburgh Steelers and
they need to figure out a way to pay him.
Terry mcclaurin, we talked about him. I think he gets paid.
I think he should get paid. He has incredible value
(01:26:28):
to a very valuable organization that is in win now mode.
With a rookie, with a rookie quarterback, These girls have
no value. No one cares except for one of them.
No one cares. And I think that's the part, is
that it's one thing to protest and to fight for something,
when I'm not saying you should only protest things if
(01:26:48):
people are gonna be on your side. I don't think
the general public is on their side on this one.
I think the general public fully understands how stupid that
they look for wearing these T shirts and making this request.
Speaker 4 (01:27:01):
Yeah, I mean again, you got to be able to
read the room. You have to understand how tone depth
this looks. Because to your point, the public probably I
mean if they again, like because of how everything has
gone down through the years, the public's never really been
on the side of the WNBA because they haven't ever watched,
(01:27:21):
they haven't ever paid attention before. So for you to
stick this in their face that way, Like I was
thinking about this, and I was thinking about it in
terms of women's soccer. When they started making statements all
the time, then it was like I felt like a
lot of people in our own country, me included, were
ready for them to lose because they became really hard
to root for. And this league over this last couple
(01:27:44):
of years has become incredibly hard to root for, Like
if you have ever wanted them to succeed, I find
it hard to believe that you would still feel as
strongly about that because they continually do and say things
where it's just like, man, why does this have to
feel like the Scott's Toughts episode of the Office, Like
why do I have to feel like I've got to
(01:28:05):
cringe left and right? Because they just they just can't
go out there and try to entertain and not ruffle feathers, like,
don't turn this into controversy Central. You guys are not
good enough at what you do to make people watch. Like,
you have to be likable, they have to, like before
you have before you can become the NFL or whatever,
(01:28:27):
you've got to be likable. You're already in a sport
where it's where you're up against it because women's basketball
is just it's always going to be somewhat of a
niche product. But I mean in that case, you have
to be super likable. You've got to have personalities, but
you and yeah, there's gonna be some controversy it comes
along with that, But how much positive stuff is going out? Like,
think about it's not a good example right now, just
(01:28:48):
because they're struggling a little bit. But you know, around
the turn of the century, even late nineties, somewhere in
that neighborhood, think about NASCAR, Like NASCAR is going to
have a niche audience outside of the South, but they
started having person and nowadies, they started having drivers that
people wanted to watch. And as a result, yeah, there's
always going to be a ceiling to what NASCAR could do,
(01:29:09):
but they did maximize that window and they need to
find a way to do that again right now as
a matter of fact. But that's what it is. Like
you have to create something and it can't be pro
wrestling controversy because you guys are just not good enough
at it. Like it just it doesn't No one has
invested enough to sit around and watch the soap opera
(01:29:32):
play out. They just move on. Like even with Kaitlyn Clark.
We even said this on the show a few different times.
It's like, yeah, we're interested in seeing what Kaitlin's doing,
but we're getting to the point where it's just like
we're not even going to talk about her, like just
let's just move on, period, Like this is not a
league that's worth talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
I agree with basically all of that. And you know
the thing too, like you said, the likability. Yeah, listen,
I understand.
Speaker 3 (01:29:58):
Everyone's going to make a livable wage.
Speaker 2 (01:30:00):
The way to get people to like you isn't to
complain about money when you are not making any.
Speaker 3 (01:30:07):
And it's funny I'll say about this.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
I mean, what is attributed more than anything to the
growth of the NBA. You know, it's obviously Magic and
Bird and you know, Jordan kind of came in a
little bit after that. Whatever, It's like imaginative Magic and Bird.
When the league were on tape delay NBA Finals, nobody cared,
(01:30:29):
you know, wearing t shirts that said pay us what
you owe us, and it's like, it's just it's just
so tone deaf.
Speaker 3 (01:30:36):
And I think that's the thing that that I keep
coming back to.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
And I know you basically just said the same thing,
j Martin, So I apologize for basically repeating what you
just said. Is that in the process of quote unquote
trying to grow an audience, they are so unlikable and
they make it so hard to try to get behind them.
They're not that they should be this feel good story.
(01:30:59):
You know, they're finally, you know, we're finally to the
point where people are starting to pay attention. And it's
like every time they get the spotlight, every time this
league gets the spotlight, they screw something up. They're trying
to fight Caitlyn Clark, They're trying to uh complain about racism.
Speaker 3 (01:31:16):
They're you know, I think I saw some press conference yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:31:18):
Where they're like, we stand with Angel Reese with all
these terrible comments that she's getting.
Speaker 3 (01:31:23):
There's no terrible comments. Nobody cares that much. You know.
Speaker 2 (01:31:27):
By the way, I'm not gonna directly blame the WNBA
players for this, but like the fake backlash to what
we talked about earlier about Shane gillis, Oh my god,
it's okay to make jokes about the WNBA, just like
it's okay to make jokes about NFL players, NBA players, Major.
Speaker 3 (01:31:43):
League Baseball, whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:31:45):
And I think that's the thing when you're obviously, look,
every business is trying to grow, but the WNBA is
again at this moment where they had this opportunity and
they're not. It's not just that they're like lowing it,
it's that they're actively choosing the wrong like the wrong
(01:32:06):
decision every step of the way that they could be making,
they are making it. You know, it's like I can't
you know, like I don't, I don't know a great example,
but it's like every decision that they could be making,
instead of embracing Caitlin Clark, you know, opposite, instead of
putting Kitlin Clark on the Olympic team, opposite, instead of
(01:32:27):
you know, being celebrating an All Star game where there
was a huge crowd they all obviously came to see
Katelon Clark, but you make it a political statement.
Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
It's just it's just wild to me. Again that just
how they're handling that We're going in circles.
Speaker 4 (01:32:44):
But it's just yeah, well, like so this is a
it's a weird example because at one point, this this league,
so to speak, was one of the most valuable on Earth. Marvel,
Marvel the films were absolutely like I mean, just gangbusters.
Everything to have Marvel attached to it made money. Everything,
(01:33:07):
even like the side stories prior to the First Avengers,
prior to the Second Avengers, all that kind of stuff
leading through Endgame was just printing money. But over the
last like four years or so, maybe even longer, actually
it's been diminishing returns, and in some cases, actually a
(01:33:28):
lot of cases, it's been outright flops, like in a
Row Fantastic four. It may flop, in fact, it probably will.
But one of the things that has played into this, Yes,
some of the stories have been badly written in all this,
but the actors have decided to make political statements. The
actors have stepped out and said stuff and done stuff
(01:33:51):
Anthony Mackie and you could easily read it as anti
American stuff. And then you've got, of course the writing
that's going in that same direction and all that. But
if the movies aren't as good as they used to be,
then the people need to be quiet and just be
as likable as humanly possible, so at the very least
will pay to see you, because we don't have a
reason to dislike you. But when Brie Larsen keeps putting
(01:34:13):
her foot in her mouth, then we're not gonna go
see the Marvels. Nobody's going to anyway, But you know,
like Captain Marvel or whatever like that. It's the same
kind of thing. The product as it has become worse,
then the stars need to be less present out there
saying a bunch of controversial stuff because they don't have
people on their side right now. They just need to
(01:34:34):
get people buying tickets to see movies. If you're the WNBA,
you need to have people watching, You need to have
people going to the games. You have people buying merchandise,
people having a positive feeling about your league. And everything
you do does the exact opposite of that. It makes
you actively not want to watch. It makes you actively
(01:34:57):
almost root against the league even exists, certainly succeeding. And
then they're telling you it's time for expansion. Now it's
really not. It's really really not like it is time
for expansion, and a lot of in whoever has got
the television deal, it's time for expansion in their coverage
to where they can actually show other stuff. Because the
(01:35:19):
WNBA is not in a position to add teams, they're
not in a position to go out there and do
this kind of stuff in front of the public. Again,
do it behind closed doors where you should handle negotiations.
Nobody's gonna be upset if it comes out and it
says you guys won, but the public. We're not going
to protest outside of NBA buildings to get WNBA players
(01:35:39):
more money, Like, what are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (01:35:41):
It is absolutely insane for people who missed it. WNBA
players wearing shirts that said pay us what you owe
us a league that has lost money for thirty straight years.
Speaker 3 (01:35:53):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:35:54):
Fox Sports Radio Erratorards Jason Martin, broadcasting live from the
Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
You know what else is unbelievable? Nick Saban returning to
coaching or is it unbelievable? We'll discuss that next Fox.
Speaker 8 (01:36:05):
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:36:09):
Welcome back, everybody, Fox Sports Radio er Toords Jason Martin,
broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Speaker 3 (01:36:17):
Thirty six minutes from now. Chris Plank follows us.
Speaker 2 (01:36:20):
Cannot wait to hear what Plank has to say about
the last week or so. Plank, of course, the Oklahoma
sideline reporter for Oklahoma Football. Don't know if he was
at SEC Media Day's Jamart, but let's talk about one
piece of news that did come out of there. Before
we do, we should mention be sure to check out
the Fox Sports Radio YouTube channel, where I.
Speaker 3 (01:36:40):
Know a lot of our hosts talked about the topic.
Speaker 2 (01:36:42):
We're gonna get to a ton of great videos from
many of our Fox Sports Radio shows.
Speaker 3 (01:36:46):
Just search Fox Sports Radio on YouTube.
Speaker 2 (01:36:48):
You'll see a whole bunch of video highlights from all
of our shows, and be sure to subscribe so you
always have instant access to our Fox Sports Radio videos
on YouTube.
Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
So we mentioned Plank mentioned SEC Media Days.
Speaker 2 (01:37:01):
Weirdly, the biggest story that probably came out of Media
Days had nothing to do with any of the teams
that were there directly, I guess you would say, but
instead the man that was not Nick Saban, of course,
former Alabama head coach now working for ESPN. It was
interesting he covered SEC Media Days last year for SEC
(01:37:22):
Network in ESPN.
Speaker 3 (01:37:23):
He was not there this.
Speaker 2 (01:37:25):
Year, but I bring it up because his former player,
Greg McElroy had some very interesting comments about about his
former head coach Nick Saban. I'm gonna find him really quick.
This is what he said, Let's take a quick look.
Obviously he said, let's take a look here. It's a
(01:37:47):
bit on a left field. But the question was asked
to me a very much in the no person that
I have a lot of respect for and to spend
a time around, just really really Admires said, they seem
to think Nick Saban's not done coaching. I had a
similar reaction he's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban
will be coaching again. Look, if it wasn't from someone notable,
I'd never say a word. Nick Saba's daughter has since
(01:38:11):
rebuked that report, but it was interesting and it got
me thinking, do you think, j Mark, do you think
there's any way, any scenario that Nick Saban ever coaches
mainstream football again, beat at the college level or of
the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:38:27):
I mean there's always a way. I mean, if you
have read into like Saban's history, you know his wife
really makes a lot of the Yep, She's the one
that carries a lot of weight when it comes to
helping him make these decisions. Terry has a lot of
power and he respects her quite a bit, So I
think a lot of it comes down to what she
wants for the family. And then the other question is
(01:38:50):
like is he having fun doing what he's doing? Is
he cool not doing the football thing? Like he was
great on TV? And I think a lot of us
thought he was gonna be, But he was even better,
I thought than the many assumed he would be. And
so he's got that if he wants it, and he
could do that forever, and he didn't have to recruit
and deal with what all of that is now. I
(01:39:11):
think he's done as far as college football goes. I
think the only chance that you see him again is
in the NFL, And if I had to bet on it,
I would say it will not happen. That's just my
personal feeling on it. But I do not think that
he is going to do anything post Alabama and college
football because the reason that he left college football has
(01:39:33):
not gotten better, It's gotten worse. Like the biggest reason
he left is because of what college football is becoming
and what you have to do now. I just don't
think he is in it for that. I don't think
he wants a part of that, like a lot of
coaches that have kind of moved on or changed what
they are doing. But would he like to have another
crack at the NFL. Yeah, I think he might, so
(01:39:55):
that would be My only feeling is if he got
the itch, if he still wants to prove he could
do it at that level, the NFL is the only
place I could see him going. I think he's done
as far as college football is it's concerned.
Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Yeah, I thought, actually so this was part of a
conversation with Paul Finebaum of SEC Network on Greg McElroy's
radio show with Cole Kublick.
Speaker 3 (01:40:16):
And you know, Paul fine Baum.
Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
Is never afraid to say something to stir things up.
And I actually thought, well, no, But I actually thought
Paul Finemum was the voice of reason here. And you know,
he talked about you know, being able to golf and
all the stuff you can do when you're retired.
Speaker 3 (01:40:32):
But he also said this.
Speaker 2 (01:40:33):
I thought it was interesting he said, this is from
Paul Finebaum in the conversation. He said he had a
better situation at Alabama the day he left than anywhere
he goes let's say in the next year. Now I
don't know whether he goes college or pros. Then he
gets into the NFL, maybe it would make more sense.
That's the part to me that I just I don't get,
(01:40:53):
is that I just there's never gonna be a better
situation for him at the college level than what he
left at Alabama. I mean, no matter where he goes,
you know, you're inherently taking over a place that's probably
kind of a mess. And even if it's a place
that you can win, I don't know that he's gonna
spend the next you know, three four, five years, however
(01:41:15):
much time he has left doing it.
Speaker 3 (01:41:16):
So I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (01:41:18):
I think it's an interesting headline. I don't know that
there's that much meat on the bone when you really
think about it. And you know, I think the other
thing too really quick, because I want to get to
disager is I think it would ultimately, unless of course,
he came back in one a national championship in the
next place, I think it would only hurt his legacy,
(01:41:39):
right He's like, you know, I was thinking about this,
like with Belichick, like I might you might disagree with
me on this, and I'm actually curious for your perspective.
I actually don't think the North Carolina thing is going
to really hurt his legacy. I think even if he
bottoms out, he's still the six time Super Bowl champ
and it kind of hurts that the argument of like, Okay,
(01:42:00):
well he really didn't do much without Brady. But I
think even if Belichick, I think if he comes, if
he stays two or three years and it's kind of
a weird thing and it's kind of a disaster. Like
I think Belichick's legacy is kind of set and I
think it can only be enhanced by what he does
at Carolina, because I don't think most people expect him
to come in and actually have real success, and so
(01:42:21):
I just bring it up because I think Saban's the
exact opposite is. I think it would be very hard
for him to enhance his legacy by returning, and in
a lot of ways, I think it would only hurt
it if he came back somewhere that wasn't built to win,
or he went back in the NFL and didn't win again,
things like that.
Speaker 4 (01:42:37):
Yeah, I don't really have anything to add there. I mean,
I think that's one hundred percent right. I mean, you've
already been at the top of the mountain. You're already
at least I think a lot of people would say
the greatest college football coach ever, certainly one of the
select few that is going to you're really going to
be able to make that argument and make it stand.
(01:42:57):
It would be my answer. Yeah, there's no reason to
come back. There's not. You've already done it at a
place where the expectations couldn't be any higher, and you've
done it at LSU as well, which obviously has a
lot of expectations, and again, I think it's less about
the legacy, or I think the legacy is important, but
I also just think it's not a fun place to
be for a guy like Nick Saban. Now it's just
(01:43:19):
not the same universe that it was, and the advantages
that you had found a way to create over time,
some of that stuff's been eliminated at this point. And
I think that if there is anything that sticks in
his crawl is I could have done it in the NFL. Yeah,
I took the Alabama job, all that kind of stuff,
(01:43:40):
But again, you know, you go back to he was
in Miami and they almost had Drew Brees, and you
never know what happens if that one thing changes and
they end up with Drew Brees's quarterback. Who knows, maybe
it never even goes to Alabama. You never know. But
is he still sitting there saying that that's that's the
you know, that's that's the animal that's gotten a way
(01:44:01):
that isn't on my wall right now. And if that
is something that he still wants to chase, I think
that'll be out there for him. But I just don't
see a universe where college football makes any sense for him.
As far as coaching. Again, he's a great analyst, and
I think he can still be around the game that way.
But I can't imagine you would again. You've done it
at Alabama. There's nowhere else to do it that's going
(01:44:23):
to make it any more fun.
Speaker 2 (01:44:25):
Don't disagree. I think it's a fun headline. I don't
think there's much meat on that bone. And the funny
thing is Greg McElroy does not strike me as the
kind of guy that says stuff just for the sake
of saying it, So I mean, I think he probably
really believed the person that he spoke to. But I'm
actually with Paul Feinbaum on this what I think, great headline.
Speaker 3 (01:44:45):
I don't think there's much to the story.
Speaker 2 (01:44:47):
Fox Sports Radio air tors Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio studios, will come back. Big story
out of the NBA this week or was it? We'll
explain next. Let's get it over the news desk though,
final time this evening, Steve de Seger, what's trending?
Speaker 9 (01:45:02):
You reference Bill Belichick's North Carolina tar Heels, a program that,
by the way, lost its bowl game to Yukon.
Speaker 2 (01:45:08):
They shared it first game of the Belichick era at
North Carolina Bowl lost to Yukon.
Speaker 9 (01:45:14):
They will be playing Yukon in a year, by the way,
that is on the future schedule. But this year's North
Carolina schedule is this. They open on the first Monday
night at September against TCU, a team that started five
and four last year, and then it's the tar Heels
against Charlotte Richmond and UCF, and then just a bunch
of ACC games after that, including Callen Stanford.
Speaker 2 (01:45:34):
I will say people are really down on Belichick. Even
by ACC schedules. The schedule is very vegetable. They have clemsing,
but no Florida State, no Miami.
Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
I believe in.
Speaker 9 (01:45:45):
Some would use words other than manageable. But yes, it
is that not good. Monetizable yeah yeah too.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
If they can't monetize some wins off that schedule, Belichick
should just retire to Nantucket.
Speaker 4 (01:45:58):
I think so.
Speaker 9 (01:45:59):
We do have a final from UFC three to eighteen
in New Orleans. The career of Dustin Poie is over.
He's retired after losing by unanimous decision to Champ Max
holloway Manny Pacio was fighting in Vegas tonight at age
forty six, he'd had four years off.
Speaker 8 (01:46:14):
He fought to a majority draw. He did not win.
Speaker 9 (01:46:17):
Mario Barrios keeps his WBC welterweight title. Two judges had
it even at one fourteen, the other scored at four
Barrios and in London tenants at Wembley Stadium, about ninety thousand,
boxer Alexander Usik was the winner. He's now undisputed heavyweight champion,
owning all four title belts. As for the late ballgame,
(01:46:39):
it has just ended. In eleven innings at Seattle. The
Mariners take it six seven to six over the Houston Astros.
Each team had scored a run in the tenth. The
Mariners tied it, scoring on a wild pitch in the
bottom of the eighth inning. More baseball. In a moment,
Guard Marcus Smart agreed to a buyout with the Wizards
and will reportedly signed with the Lakers the FISA. Collier
(01:47:01):
was game MVP at the WNBA All Star Game tonight,
scoring a record thirty six points. Skyler Dickens Diggins had
a triple double with fifteen assists, and it was you know,
this is an All Star game, not a lot of
minutes to be had. With the various players a high
scoring game to say the least one fifty one to
one thirty one. Team Collier takes it over Team Clark.
(01:47:22):
Caitlin Clark injured did not play. The Saints gave second
round quarterback Tyler Shuck a fully guaranteed contract, Bengals first
round defensive end Shamar Stewart still unsigned. Scottie Scheffler led
the open by four strokes after his third round sixty
seven on Saturday. The Milwaukee Brewers have won nine straight,
including five in a row against the Dodgers, recently eight
(01:47:42):
seven the final in LA. Although Shoheo Tani Homert his
thirty third shortstop Mookie Betts was given the night off
by LA. He's batting two forty one and just one
eighty eights the batting average this month. The Cubs hit
five solo homers and shut out Boston six to nothing
in the game that most of the country got on
Fox TV. Winning pitchers show to Imanaga pitched seven innings,
(01:48:03):
now seven and three, Colorado's record is twenty four and
seventy four after a win over Minnesota ten to six.
The win to Antonio Senzatel he went seven innings, had
been three and thirteen this year Arizona ten to one
over Saint Louis Auhennio Suarez two more homers. He has
thirty three homers eighty one RBIs. They beat the Cardinals
(01:48:24):
in sunny gray. The Yanks won twelve nine at Atlanta.
Trent Grisham of Grand slam in the top of the
ninth Tampa Bay with three in the bottom of the
eighth edge Baltimore four to three wins for the A's
in white Sox. Washington beat the Padres and you Darvish
four to two Texas said Detroit to a sixth straight
loss for to one Philadelphia winner. The Mets lost Phillies
first in the NL e is now game and a
(01:48:45):
half over the Mets and a reminder. MLB Speedway Classic
is in two weeks.
Speaker 8 (01:48:50):
A ballgame at.
Speaker 9 (01:48:51):
Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday nights, August second, Braves against the
Reds on Fox TV.
Speaker 8 (01:48:58):
Back to you.
Speaker 3 (01:49:00):
Here, cannot wait wait yeah, no, it would be fun.
Speaker 2 (01:49:03):
Appreciate you to Saga, Saga, have a great evening. I
assume you're back to you're on what is your preseason
stuff start?
Speaker 3 (01:49:09):
Because you're with the Chargers.
Speaker 9 (01:49:10):
Are three weeks away, and yeah, I've got some other
I think I'm missing two Saturday nights and oh no.
Speaker 8 (01:49:16):
Sorry about that. It's okay, say in an advance.
Speaker 3 (01:49:18):
No, it's okay.
Speaker 2 (01:49:19):
Listen to this guy took off two Saturdays in a
row and got yelled at by Arnie span here.
Speaker 3 (01:49:23):
You know it is what it is, Arnie.
Speaker 8 (01:49:25):
I believe is.
Speaker 9 (01:49:26):
I think Arnie is filling in one weeknight and Plank
another weeknight the coming week.
Speaker 8 (01:49:30):
Okay, I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
So all right, well, Plank is coming up here in
twenty two minutes. Thank you to Sega. Have a great evening.
Speaker 1 (01:49:36):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:49:37):
Fox Sports Radio ertors Jason Martin, broadcasting live from the
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Tell you what, uh let's uh
come back when we do, We'll do NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:49:48):
We will wrap the show. And how about this.
Speaker 2 (01:49:52):
We gotta gotta talk about a little bit of a
pop culture story coming this week that every sports fan
will be intrigued by. This is Fox Sports Radio. Welcome
back everybody, Fox Sports Radio air Torris Jason Martin, broadcasting
live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. Hey do us
all a favor? Shortly after the show, podcast is going up.
(01:50:15):
If you missed any of today's show. Check out the podcast.
Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts.
Be sure to follow and review the podcast. Give it
a quick five stars. Again, just search Fox Sports Radio
where we get your podcasts, and you'll see today's show
posted after we get off air. Jabar a couple quick
NBA topics I want to get to, you know, one
that's semi pressing. And I saw Chris Plank who's following
(01:50:38):
us at about fifteen minutes, that he plans on talking about it.
This did happen today, Marcus Smart going to the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (01:50:45):
Does that move the needle at all for you?
Speaker 4 (01:50:47):
Not really other than that Luca made it happen, yep,
said he wanted to play with him. He's been heard
a lot. I think he only played like I think
he's only played what fifty four games in the last
two years, yep or something like that. But obviously defensive
wizard when he's out there, and he's a real irritant
as well so, but in kind of a good way
(01:51:08):
as opposed to some of the guys like a like
a Dylan Brooks or something like that. I mean, I
don't think it's a bad move. I think he was
a super popular guy in almost every locker room that
he's been in. This gives him a chance to play
on a team that people actually want to watch and
care about, so maybe that'll inspire him. I don't know
what it means to them now, because I don't know
(01:51:28):
what he's got left, and I'm not sure about his
health and things like that. But you know, Luca is
clearly you know, looking at what he wants to do
in the future there before he signs the extension or
whatever it is he's going to do here in this
next few weeks. So I don't know how much it
moves the needle, but I certainly actually did look at
the story and kind of say, huh, well that was
(01:51:49):
an interesting move. That's kind of how I felt about it.
Speaker 2 (01:51:52):
I'll be curious because speaking of you know, coming to
you know, I feel like there's something coming to a
head with Lebron, and maybe there just isn't a spot
for him with his salary all of that, but it
is very clear it's just like they're just over Lebron
and you know, and I saw a separate report today,
you know, they want him to retire there blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (01:52:13):
Yeah, they want him to retire.
Speaker 2 (01:52:14):
There as long as you know it's it's after this
coming season, and so listen. I think he still feels
like he's got something left in the tank. I do
think he has something left in the tank. I just
don't think that the folks in LA want him. And
it appears as though Luca, to quote Captain Phillips, I'm
(01:52:35):
the captain now. It certainly feels that way with with Luca.
So yeah, really quick speaking to the captain of the ship,
maybe a sinking ship. Bradley Beal headed to the Los
Angeles Clippers thanks to the recommendation of James Harden told
you earlier today. I don't think there's a worse recommendation
(01:52:55):
you could possibly get than from James Harden, who of
course followed his core quote best friend Kevin Durant to Brooklyn,
stabbed him in the back, brought his other best friend
Russell Westbrook to Houston, kicked him out of town a
year later.
Speaker 3 (01:53:09):
Another one.
Speaker 2 (01:53:10):
Does this move the needle for you? Bradley Beal to
the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this week.
Speaker 4 (01:53:14):
I actually think this might actually make them worse because
what Beal does is what Harden does, just not as well,
like Beal has been there. There was a time when
you know, he's pretty lethal. In Washington, he was well
liked and also the kind of stuff. But like you
look at this, now you're bringing a dude that is aged,
(01:53:36):
that proved you know, he doesn't play nice with others
in a lot of respects. You go to Phoenix, Harden
wants the ball, Beal wants the ball. They both want
to take a lot of threes, and neither one of
them wants to play defense. Harden is better at this
point in his career than Beal is, and pretty much
has been his entire career. So I don't know what
you can gain here. And now now you're seeing that
the Clippers are also going to go after Chris Paul, Like,
(01:53:58):
what are we trying to do here? Are we trying
to set up the All Star team of twenty nineteen
because it's twenty twenty five. I do not I'm not
quite sure I understand what's happening right now with Clippers.
Speaker 2 (01:54:11):
Yeah, I think like basically, I think the Kawhi and
James Harden contracts are on the same timeframe, so we'll
see what happens with those two. I don't think that
I don't think he moves to Needle because I think
he's probably gonna be the sixth man on you know, sixth, seventh, eighth,
best team in the NBA or in the Western Conference.
Speaker 3 (01:54:31):
Becuse me really quick.
Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
I'll just say this because I want to get to
one non NBA story to wrap the show.
Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
Dame Lollard going back to Portland. I actually think it's cool.
Speaker 2 (01:54:40):
I've heard a lot of negativity heard Martin Weiss and
Alex Monico before us.
Speaker 3 (01:54:43):
I love both those guys, but they seem to be
down on the move. You know. I just look at
it as I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:54:49):
Really get the idea that Dame Lollard ever really wanted
to leave. I think there was some pressure, you know,
kind of the public pressure. Oh, he's got to go
chase a ring, and then of course the organization was
going super young again.
Speaker 3 (01:55:02):
I don't think he wanted to leave.
Speaker 2 (01:55:04):
This kind of feels like a you know, an old
married couple that kind of wants to see what's out
there when they get it and then they realize this
is this, this should have never ended. Let's just you know,
ride this out together. And so I just, yeah, I
just I don't know, I think it's cool. I didn't
really understand why anyone would sign Dame Lillard this offseason
while he's going to be rehabbing it out for the year,
(01:55:26):
but it makes sense to go back to Portland finish
what you started. He's probably never gonna win a ring,
but he will go down as an organization icon.
Speaker 3 (01:55:34):
I actually like this a lot.
Speaker 4 (01:55:36):
Yeah. Look, I don't think they're bringing him back to
win a championship. They're bringing him back because people like
watching him there and he likes being there, and he
is going to go down as the greatest player probably
in Frances history. He's got almost every record. There's a
couple other guys that you could probably make an argument for,
but just in terms of what he has meant to
(01:55:57):
that city, I just think this kind of a feel
good story more than anything else. Like he's gonna go
end his career where he should end it, back home,
back back and the fans are gonna embrace him and
they're gonna love him. And again, it's not gonna end
with a championship. But at this point, I think it's
more just about these are This is a fan base
(01:56:18):
and a athlete that I think are better together than
a part.
Speaker 2 (01:56:24):
Last topic, a little bit of a non NBA story,
but it's still a sports story. Is by the time
that we come back on air next week, we will
have the debut of Happy Gilmore two. Friday, the twenty fifth.
It comes out.
Speaker 3 (01:56:43):
We can do a full review if you really want to,
J Martin next week.
Speaker 2 (01:56:46):
But I'll tell you this. You know, I don't know
what to expect. I haven't even I don't even know
if I've seen a trailer. I like it though, I
like it. I got no beef, I got no issues
make it. I plan on watching it at some point
next weekend. Get a little bull of popcorn, Get nostalgic.
It premieres next Friday.
Speaker 3 (01:57:08):
I plan on watch it. I'm kind of excited.
Speaker 4 (01:57:12):
I mean, I'm gonna watch it, but I'm already preparing
to be disappointed. Sure, it's not that it's not that
I don't think it could be good. I think that
living up to what it was, what the original was,
and how it kind of just took the world by
storm when it came out, even more so than Billy
(01:57:33):
Madison did. I mean, what's the last thing that Adam
Sandler did outside of cut Gems? That has actually done anything.
I mean, like the Grown Up series and all that. Like,
these guys have gone out and they've done a lot
of movies. But I mean, how much of this stuff
is actually good? Actually? I think Adam Sandler also did
the Jordan thing air a couple of years ago and
(01:57:55):
that was actually pretty good. No, but he was part
of it at least. I think that's right. But uh, I.
Speaker 3 (01:58:02):
Just he's not going to be Hustle.
Speaker 4 (01:58:04):
It wasn't bad Hustle. Yeah, it's Netflix.
Speaker 8 (01:58:07):
The Basketball and.
Speaker 11 (01:58:10):
Edwards right, Yeah he was the coach and yeah, Anthony
Edwards played kind of the bad guy.
Speaker 4 (01:58:15):
I think maybe I did see that. Okay, so maybe
I'm wrong about that a little bit. But I just
if I had to bet money, I think this film
will be mid I think this will be mediocre at best.
I just I'm not saying that its moment has passed.
I'm just saying you can't recapture what you did in
the first one. Like, there's just so much legendary stuff there.
(01:58:35):
I think time has changed in a way and you've
got like stars in it that I just I feel
like it's I'm not saying it's a cash grab. I
think they're gonna put everything into it. I'm glad that
you've got Julie Bowen and you know, you've got some
of these people in it. But at the same time,
I just I can't imagine this being more than about
like a six and a half out of ten at best.
(01:58:56):
I'm hoping to be wrong. I'm not trying to be
cynical about it. I'm just I have my doubts that
this is going to turn out to be what people
hope it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
Yeah, my only real thought is that if Adam Sandler
waited this long to redo it, it's obviously not for
the money.
Speaker 3 (01:59:12):
So, you know, I think he believes.
Speaker 2 (01:59:16):
You know, I don't know enough about Hollywood to know
how this all works, but I'm guessing he believes in
the script and we'll see what happens. But we could
talk about that potentially next week, but we got to
get out of here. Want to thank the crew, Mary
mack on the boards, producer Ian Steve de Sega, for
my partner Jason Martin. I'm Aratrus. If you missed any
today's show, make sure to download the podcast. We covered
(01:59:37):
a lot of ground WNBA players going crazy pay us
what you owe us, What are you guys doing. We
talked all sorts of NFL, NBA, and of course Happy Gilmore.
So make sure to download the podcast. For Jason Martin,
I'm aratorus. This is Fox Sports.
Speaker 4 (01:59:51):
Are you
