Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Welcome to Fox Sports Saturday.
Speaker 3 (00:05):
I'm Alex Curry here with Carmen Vitally.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Thank you for spending your Saturday afternoon with us. Carmi,
happy madness, Thank you, Happy madness. Can I just say
things got spicy last night?
Speaker 3 (00:18):
And we write at Don, We write at.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Don, write it for Don for Don.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
We're gonna get into the women's final reactions from last night.
Uh Gino finally put out a statement. It's about damn
time for that men's final four kickoff in about two hours.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Here.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
It's gonna be a fun day. We're gonna play a
little nailed it or failed it? Were Carme and are
each gonna give a few takes. You know that we
either nailed it and crushed it or we boy, did
we fail it and get it wrong. We've got some
amazing guests today. NBA reporter Melissa Rowland, Fox Sports Adam
a mean. He's joining us from the booth moments before
he calls a game an hour two. We have producer
(01:02):
Ian with us today, Technical producer Chris.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
And Martin why is at the news desk.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
But Carmie, we got we got some good some good stuff.
This week, and we're gonna start with our nailed it
or failed it.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
And as I just mentioned, we're each going to.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Give either a take that we nailed, got right, or
failed and it can be about anything, so we can
go a lot different places here.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
I'm gonna start with a nailed it.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Because we talked about this, I think like last month
maybe where I said Kirk Cousins would be the perfect
mentor for Fernando Mendoza in Vegas, and we said we
didn't know. We didn't know Vegas could pull this off
because Cousins, he's got an incredible agent and he's expensive.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
But they got it done. They it's happening.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
I was. I was really like the one thing about
that where I was really unsure of was like, does
Kirk still think of himself as a starter?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Well, so that was so that was here. This is
this is a different situation.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
So as we mentioned, like.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Kirk Cousins like agent needs to be studied for the
deals that he has gotten.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
This maykes phenomenal, it's insane.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
So this contract could be worth to one hundred and
seventy million over five years, but it's one year, twenty million.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Fully guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Now of cousins salary this season, one point three million
will be paid by Vegas and the remainder by the Falcons,
with another ten million fully guaranteed do the third day
of the new league year of March twenty twenty seven
that will be paid by Vegas. And then along with
that the deal includes two years at eighty million, although
only twenty million of this year is fully guaranteed. Now,
(02:52):
we all know and love Kirk Cousins. We had him
on our Super Bowl show. He is the most down
to earth rad Dad is what I called him, and
he told us he needs that on his daily alarm clock,
twig them up every day. And we've all had a
front row seat to sweet sweet Fernanda Mendoza this year
and he seems as good as they come. Right, So
(03:14):
it hasn't happened, But like we all know and believe,
he is going number one overall to Vegas. And this pair,
this duo, is the two perfect quarterbacks that you would
want in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
You do not have to worry about them.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
They're not going to be out gambling at the tables,
drinking region at the clubs until the sun comes up.
These are two extremely like in the most beautiful way possible,
nerdy quarterbacks that are just there for the love of
the game. They love their families.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
They love their teammates.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
We just saw Fernando's pro day where he before he
would throw his routes, he would let all the scouts
know what he was throwing so he could shine a
light on his receivers so everyone could see that they
were running the perfect routes. I am here also for
all the memes that have been coming out of Doctor
Evil and Mini Me, but if they were nerdy quarterbacks
(04:12):
of Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza, this is just going
to be such an incredible opportunity for Mendoza to learn
from a respected veteran like Kirk is now going to
be be help the next generation quarterback. But it's different
this time for Kirk Cousins because he's going in knowing
his role. He's most likely going to start the season
(04:33):
as the starter, but he knows he is not the future.
That was not the case when he signed the deal
in Atlanta. He thought he was the future, and then
they drafted a quarterback in the first round. He did
not know that was going to happen. We did not
think that was going to happen. This is a completely
different situation. He knows they have the number one overall pick.
They are getting Fernando Mendoza. He is coming in in
(04:55):
a mentorship role, hopefully to start the season, because we
heard Clint Kubiak, writer's new head coach, say, ideally they
don't want Fernando to start from day one. You'd love
to see him be able to learn behind somebody that's
in a perfect world.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
It doesn't always work that way, but.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Now it will because now they have a great, great,
great veteran quarterback for Fernando to learn from, and it
feels like their personalities are gonna mesh really well.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Carmie, I'm very like I said, I'm still very interested
to see like what ends up happening. But I do
think that this is kind of the ideal scenario for Kirk,
whether or not he realizes it, because of if you
look at what happened with the Falcons and none of
it made sense, It's very clear now like a nightsight,
that none of that made sense, and there were clearly
(05:46):
like people had different ideas at the top leadership wise
in the Falcons organization of like what they wanted their
quarterback teacher to look like, and it just it didn't
make sense the way that everything was laid out there
here in Vegas. You don't want to rely on Kirk
necessary to be your starter because he's older, he now
has a very significant injury history, and you don't, like,
(06:10):
you don't want your entire franchise to ride with Kirk
as the only option. Right At the same time, you're
also investing the most you could possibly invest in a
rookie in Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick, which
carries a lot of weight too. So I like what
(06:30):
they're doing in Vegas. I'm still very interested to see
if Kirk does actually start week one because it depends
on well, I think it depends on how what Fernando
Mendoza shows you. I mean, at the end of the day,
in a perfect world, I know Klin Kubik said, like,
in an ideal world, Fernando doesn't have to start. But
I think in an actually perfect world, you see enough
(06:50):
from Fernando that you can throw him out there right
away because you feel good about it, and you want
to get him in there right away, and you want
to get him used to the team that he's going
to be captain and he's going to be the head
of for for the foreseeable future. Like that's that's in
a perfect world. Now what happens, I don't know, but
I think the Raiders have insulated themselves in multiple scenarios.
(07:11):
Now where you have like your perfect perfect scenario and
now you have your ideal scenario as like your most
likely scenario, and then you have like you have options,
is what I'm getting at. And I really I think
that John Spytech in Las Vegas, this was a really
good deal. And again just to get I think, as
somebody tweeted this out, but like just to get the number,
like one hundred and seventy two million dollar number on
(07:32):
paper is a feat in and of itself for Mike McCartney,
who is who is Kirk Cousin's agent, and maybe he's
a great guy.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
It needs to be studied what he has done throughout
Kurt's well Kirk.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
So if Kirk, if Kirk ends up having if Kirk,
if this works out like not this first year, I
think if he gets any more money past what he's guaranteed,
he will surpass Tom Brady in career earnings. Oh yeah,
which is wild well, because Kirk has not been in
the league as long as Tom Brady.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
All talk like significant cuts to make the team better.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
He didn't take that much. That's that's a very that's
a big misunderstanding because he.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Could have been so much more.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
No, he had things converted into signing bonuses. That's where
that's where the like, there is this this narrative around
Tom Brady that he like took less. He didn't take less,
he restructured, which is which is different because it's still
cold Stwart's career earning. It's like Tom Brady made a
lot of money and he was paid a lot. It
was just it didn't all count against the cap because
the Patriots converted a lot of it into signing bonuses.
(08:34):
But regardless, Mike McCartney, he's a he's a he's a
friend of mine. He repped one of my very very
good friends while he was playing. And I'm I'm very
happy for Kirk because one thing that we knew we
know about kirkus he's gonna go get his money.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Yeah he is, and he did.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
So.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Hats off to the Raiders for doing all the right
things this offseason.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
All right, what you got, I'm going to do and
failed it because I'm still not happy. Let's still sad.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
I didn't think Mike Evans was going to leave Tampa.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Oh honey, I know that shocked me too.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
I really, I was like, I was playing my flag
and I worked with Mike for so.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Long he talked to him. Did you get any inside?
Speaker 4 (09:16):
No, I haven't talked to him. I was just remanted.
But like when he ended up, when when the news
broke and stuff, I started like reminiscing and I started
like going through old photos and I was like, I
seriously felt like I was like, I don't know, like
my best friend was moving away, like I don't know.
I just like I started like reminiscing about our like
I think. I posted a picture of me with with
(09:38):
Mike and his wife after the Super Bowl parade, which
was a boat parade in Tampa when we won the
Super Bowl, and it was the most unhinged day of
my It was my most the most unhinged day of
my life.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Just shared people the bruise that you received.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
I well, and this is this, Honestly, if Mike was
on my boat, it might not have happened. I was
on the def offensive boat with all of the DB's
and if dbs could catch savy receivers. So I was
on the boat and I had my head down on
my phone because part of I was still doing my
job at that poor writing. As unhinged as I was,
(10:13):
and as unhinged as that day was, I was capturing
content and I was so I was sending off some
of the content I was not looking. And also we're
on a boat in the middle of the river. I
feel this gigantic pain in my on my thigh and
it just like it felt like a cannon ball hit
(10:36):
my hit my leg, and I like looked up and
I looked down at it and there's an imprint of
the top of a beer kid. You could see the tab.
You can see the poll tab. And I had been
hit with a beer that was slingshot from the shore
into our boat.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
That beautiful battle.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
And I'm I'm telling you when I was in the
middle of the deck, the front deck, and there were
guys players lined up all along the railing so like
it had to go past them to get to me.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Like they duck out of the way for you.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Guys guy, I thought I was safe. I mean a
lot of them, A lot of them came over and apologize.
They were like, carbon, We're so sorry. And I went that.
That was when I decided that my work day was
over and I went below deck and one of our
coaches poured me an entire thing of tequila that was
given to him by no. This was and Domakan sue
(11:34):
he he invests in a tequila brand, or at the time,
invested in a tequila brand. I forgot what brand it was,
to be honest, sorry Sue, but I I literally it
was just a huge glass full of ice. And then uh,
a coach who was a good friend of mine, just poured,
just kept pouring, filled it all the way up, but
was like, here have it. And I was like, okay,
my workday is done. But if Mike had been on
(11:56):
my boat, he would have caught that, So I I
just I really didn't. I thought that, you know, with
how much Mike means. And you know what the inside
I did get wasn't directly from Mike, but it was
from guys that are in that building that talked to him,
and it was one of those things where he just
needed something different for his career. He wanted to experience
something different. And it was a juxtaposition too, because Leavonte
(12:21):
David also just retired and so he is no longer
a buccaneer either, but for different reasons. And he was
a buck his entire career. And he's also another very
good friend of mine. He's one of the best that
this league has ever had to offer. I have been
campaigning for him to make make the Hall of Fame
since I started to know him, since I started to
cover him in twenty nineteen. I don't know if it's
(12:43):
going to happen, because he's been criminally underrated his entire life,
and that I hope we can do it, nailed it
or failed it when the time comes and Levante gets
into the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
But that's a good looking ahead.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
I don't know if it's going to happen. It's that's
five years in the future at this point. But yeah,
so I was really really wrong about Mike leaving. I'm
very happy for him though, and I'm happy for his family,
and I'm happy that he gets to go to a system,
in particular with Mike, with Kyle Shanahan. Mike Shanahan got
how old am I. I'm really glad that he's going
to a system that's gonna be able to use him
(13:18):
really really well.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, he's going to be great.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
He makes it, he's gonna be great.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
I think he's gonna be happy. I think for is
gonna be happy. Oh yeah, Mike has Honestly, he's had
a lot of soft tissue issues, Like he's had some
hamstring issues.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
But this this off we go into the team that's
been like under the heat for soft time because they're
right next.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
To and apparently John Lynch brought scientists in and is whatever.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
That's not whatever. I mean that was like a significant
like a lot of players on the team are having
soft tissue issues.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Yeah, well it doesn't have anything to do with a substation,
that's whatever. That was just the entire like insane tinfoil
hat theory. But no. So I'm really happy though that,
like Mike, Mike is on Like this season when he
got hurt was the first time he actually ever went
under the knife, like he had never had surgery before before. Now,
(14:13):
so I like he's actually been just really such a
warrior and he's going to continue to be And I
think that the change in scenery is going to lead
to some great things. I think we're going to see
a lot from Mike Evans this year, especially because he's
going to be in a system that knows how to
use him.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, okay, I'm gonna end with a failed it here.
The Lakers can go toe to toe and compete with Oka.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
See can I call that? Can I call that? And
nailed it? I said the exact opposite.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Yeah, so Carme nailed it and I failed it. A
lot went wrong on Thursday and Oka. See. Obviously, Lakers
are now zero and three. It was over the first
five minutes. But the most heartbreaking thing that came out
of it was Luka Doncic suffering a Grade two hand
me injury, so he's out for the rest of the
regular season. And most I don't know, I mean you
would think into the playoffs and injury like this, the
(15:02):
recovery time would normally take at least a month, and
that's like no practice, no games, obviously, because you don't
want to overcompensate and then injure something else and then
be out for all of next season.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
But it's yeah, it's just it's just heartbreaking.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
But it was. It wasn't even close. They could not
keep up for seven game series. It felt like OKAC
was playing with their food, like they're the defending chance,
like SGA, like or Young. They have a deep bench
that was.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
Just that embarrassing, quite literally built for that.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
That was embarrassing.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
I was like, oh, yeah, there's no way, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
It's really it's what I what I said, was it
last week? It's between the Thunder and the Spurs, and
I don't still don't know if it's really between the
two of them. Dude.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Yeah, So okay, so we ended it on a nailed
it and failed it. CARMEI nailed it, I failed it,
But you know what, I was rooting with my heart, Okay,
born raise La Laker fan for life.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
That was just it's not a good day.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Okay, with last few days for Lakers fans, that was heartbreaking.
But we're gonna take a quick break here when we
come back. Women's March Madness final is set and we
write it.
Speaker 3 (16:15):

Sally's that's oh my god. Have you seen He's like
going back on tour? So like my feet is completely
full of everyone dressing up in the bow, bald heads
and the mustaches going.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
To a show.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
I've seen him. I saw him a couple of years
ago at an outdoor Chicago. It was honestly, it was
we went with a bunch of girls and it was.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
One that's what it is.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
It's like all girls dressed in bald caps.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
It's one of we didn't we didn't ad dress up
like that. It was an out venue though, where we
like mister allow pig bic blankets and like you got
to bring your own alcohol and like your own okay everything,
So it was like that. It was. It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
I love that so much.
Speaker 7 (18:18):
All of his songs are so recognizable too, but I
will say know them all, you know them all, but
only like parts of it. So it's like fireball, yeah,
and then there's very few words to sing along.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Yes all you need all.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
And he also has a ton of features, so he
like a medley of like his like features and stuff. Also,
Iggy Azalea opened for him, which was sick.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
I love that it was. It was it was a
g all right, Carmie, let's get to March Madness, because
women's March Madness Final is set. South Carolina will face
UCLA tomorrow afternoon. This is UCLA's first final in school history.
But unfortunately the biggest story that came out of yesterday
was Gino's head coach of you inexcusable behavior and freak
(19:02):
out on Don.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
If you missed it, let me paint the picture for you.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Moments before the game was over, Gina walked over to
Don on the sidelines and initiated an argument. Now at
this point, we don't know what's being said. All we
see is how upset that it made Don. And after
the game what Gino claimed on his high horse. For
forty one years, I've been coaching at twenty five final fours,
and the protocol is before the game, you meet at
(19:27):
half court and the coaches shake hans.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Correct. I waited for three minutes, so it is what
it is.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
And there is clear video evidence, you guys, that they
did shake hands, even gave a hug, gave like the
handshake hug, like it happened. So after he was about
to get the full beat down from South Carolina, he
thought going up to Don just before the game ended
(19:53):
was a good idea to go yell and throw his
hissy fit in her face, and that is the definition
of a sore loser. And it's he finally like he
was standing like Dine on that hill last night. He
finally put out a statement today saying there was no
excuse for how I handled the end of the game
(20:13):
versus South Carolina. It's unlike what I do and what
our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize
to the staff and team at South Carolina. It was
on called for and how I reacted. The story should
be how well South Carolina played, Uh huh, And I
don't want my actions.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
To distract from that.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
I had a great relationship with their staff, and I
sincerely want to apologize to them. That is you gus
lap on the hand from your university, and you were
just saying what you're told to be said. That was ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Diorama is unquestionably, right now the best women's college basketball coach,
like one of, if not the best. Yeah, he's got
hiss out the most success he did. But this is
also a pattern when another great emerges because he now
has a full fledged rivalry with Don Staley. Yes, incredible,
(21:07):
like Don Staley is just an ecosystem. Unto herself. She
is she's incredible, she is successful, she is charismatic, she
gets along with her players, Her players appreciate the way
that she coaches. It's it's physical, like they play a
physical brand of basketball that is unlike what the women's
game has seen in a very long time. But if
(21:27):
you go back and you look at Gino's history, this
happened with Pat Summerl at Tennessee. This was Pat Somerl,
who is perhaps the best coach in women's basketball history. Again,
one of she's in that conversation with Gino and they
had a bitter, bitter rivalry the two of them, And
so basically this is just now. I mean, Gino has
(21:50):
had incredible staying power. Yukon has been a powerhouse program.
But if you look at the last five years or
so of these of women's college basketball, it has been
this search from South Carolina. I mean it started before that,
but the last five years in particular, South Carolina won
three titles and they're going for their third. I should say,
(22:12):
I like, this was a this was frustration boiling over.
And also they're apparently yeah, like the coach is supposed
to meet half court and that's supposed to be the
second handshake, though there's like two, so he was acknowledging
that they shook hands like beforehand, but apparently there's like
a ceremonious meet at half quart or whatever, and for
(22:35):
whatever reason, Dawn didn't do it. And whether it was
intentional or not doesn't matter. But then to take a
fight with Philly Down because that was Philly.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Down, Oh yeah, I'm on take you down.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
I'm gonna beat your ass. I'm a beat Gino's ass.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
That don came out in her, and it was because
that's who she is.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Do you see all assistant coaches on both sides?
Speaker 4 (22:57):
Pat Summit? Yea, I see Pat Summer all I met
Pat Summit. Anyway, I the like picking that fight in
that moment was the boil. It wasn't just the hell.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Though that was little boy energy it was, but it.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Was the culmination of realizing that you now have an
equal in this where you didn't have an equal.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Little little boy energy.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
And I loved what Down said at her press conference
afterwards where she was like, you know, Yukon beat us
up for all those years before we really got going,
and I didn't say a word. So I don't want
to hear it, and I'm just like, yes, that was
like don like she and you know, she also said
in the postgame interview where she was like, I have integrity.
(23:43):
I don't know what that was about, but I will
always approach this game with integrity. And she dropped it
after that, and this was like Gino took more shots
at her in the postgame press comes and then he
comes out with the apology today and You're just like,
you are too good, Gino. You have too much of
a legacy preserve to be acting like this. But it's
also been a pattern when you end up getting your
(24:08):
when you when you recognize an equal. This was a
reaction to recognizing an equal in the sport. And at
this point Don Staley may not even be his equals.
She may be surpassing him, and I think.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
She did in a lot of people's eyes with that
action from us.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
There are like I'm talking like resume wise, at this point,
she's getting there and is with this championship, could be
absolutely the unquestioned best coach in women's basketball, which this
I mean, I love I love Don Staley. I think
that she's an excellent steward of women's college basketball. For
(24:42):
the moment that it's in in particular, and I like,
I mean, you can say that this is the story
of the like, this is the story of the women's
Final four and will still be the story kind of
the championship. But like, honestly say, should probably be relieved
by that because you're about to get dog walked by
South Carolina. I and this, I mean, it's not that
(25:05):
was one of the lowest scoring the UCLA's Final four
game was one of the was the lowest scoring I
believe women's final four game. Ever.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Yeah, they like they have their work cut for that.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
If what South Carolina did to Yukon, Yeah, if they
were able to do that to Yukon, UCLA is going
to get absolutely dog walked and it's not going to
be pretty.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
So I hope it's not that bad. I really think
it's bad. I hope it's okay. Well, we can dive
into that a little more a little later, but now
let's check it with Martin Wise and see what's strending.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Major League Baseball scores.
Speaker 8 (25:40):
Top of the eighth inning, the Brewers lead the Royals
five to two. Middle of the eighth innings, White Sox
with a four to three lead over the Blue Jays,
who also plays Alejandro Kirk on the injury list with
a thumb dislocation and fracture.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
It's going to see if you need surgery. On Monday.
Speaker 8 (25:56):
Top of the second in England, Pirates and Oriels scoreless.
Also top of the second, the Dodgers with a two
to nothing lead over the Nationals. Day of the bases
loaded right now is well Yeh Basis loaded, Mickey Rojas
up to bat top of the second, Astros and the
A's Houston with a two to nothing lead. Padres and
Red Sox still scoreless. In the NBA, you got the
Spurs and the Nuggets at the half seventy two to
(26:17):
sixty five, san Antonio in the lead.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
Vickton women.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
Yama has fifteen points. He shot eleven first half free
throws so far, so Nicole Jokic with twenty first half points.
He also shot eleven the first half free throws. He's
on close to trouble double watch twenty points, four rebounds,
four assists. Jamal Murray with seven first half points. Wizards
and the Heat playing right now, Miami with a ninety
six to sixty eight lead over Washington. The Basketball Hall
(26:44):
of Fame class An now its just a short time ago.
Mary Staudemeyer, Shamikah hold Stalkandas Parker and land At Deladon,
Doc Rivers, Mike D'Antoni, Mark Few, Joey Crawford in the
nineteen ninety six women's national team. The Tigers are in
the rank delay right now with the Cardinals eleven to
six in the top of the ninth Detroit and the lead.
(27:05):
They'll have to wait for Justin Verlander to make his
home debut. He's going on the fifteen day injured list
with a hip injury. At forty three years old, he's
the oldest player in Major League Baseball. And as Alex
said earlier today, we are a few hours away from
the tip of the Final four in Indianapolis six o
nine for Yukon and Illinois eight forty nine Michigan in Arizona.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Ladies, back to you, Thank you, Martin, you're listening to
Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Career with Carmen Vitally. Thank
you for spending your Saturday afternoon with us. It is
time for our first guest. Senior NBA reporter for the
California Post, Melissa Roland thanks for joining the show.
Speaker 9 (27:41):
Absolutely, thank you so much for having me on.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
I'm so happy with Fine Like I've been trying to
get her, you guys for weeks.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
This girl is a busy one.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
But Melissa, we got some heartbreaking news from the Lakers
yesterday that Luca is now out for the rest of
the regular season with a Grade two hammy injury. What
is the mood like in that Lakers locker room right now?
Because this is a big hit.
Speaker 9 (28:05):
It's a major hit. Luka Dancic had been playing out
of his mind in March. He had averaged thirty seven
point five point thirty seven point five that's the second
most points over the month of March ever an NBA history,
behind Michael Jordan. So he had been playing lights out.
The Lakers were sixteen and two, they were being lifted
(28:28):
as real championship contenders. And then you have Luca go
down and that changes everything for Luca, who obviously was
an MVP contender. You know, he might not even be
eligible for rewards right now. And then there's the Lakers.
You know, they could have really made some noise in
the playoffs and now they're just a big question mark.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
I I mean, they are and one thing that's not
been a question mark though. When we talked about this
last week Alex and I did, the Thunder just looked
on stoppable and they just you know, the Lakers just
ran into them hard and it didn't go very well
for them. Is this I mean, are we talking like
the Thunder running away with the Western Conference or do
(29:11):
we think that the Spurs are going to create a
pretty significant challenge here for the West?
Speaker 9 (29:17):
Yeah, I mean that's a great point. So entering that game,
the Lakers were one of the hottest teams in the league,
and that was thought to be the ultimate measuring stick game.
You know, the Lakers had beaten teams like Houston Place, Nicks,
the timber Wolves, and you know, when they played the Thunder,
it was going to be like, Okay, is this team
(29:39):
actually the real deal? Can they compete against the Thunders
and the Spurs of the league. And you know, they
trailed by as much as forty six points. So yeah,
it was stunning. So we saw that the Lakers may
be good, but they're not great, even before the Luca injury,
and so that was a big wake up call for them.
(30:00):
Sure it was this one game, but so right now,
I think it comes down to the Thunder and the Spurs.
I see with the Spurs is, even though Lemby is
absolutely incredible, he doesn't have to playoff experience.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
So you know, is.
Speaker 9 (30:16):
This postseason going to be kind of like getting his
seat wet period for both him and the Spurs and
then they're going to be poised for a deeper next
season or can they defy all odds and you know,
make a lot of noise this postseason that I'm not
sure yet, but the Thunder of the team to get through.
They're the raigning champions, they have the raining MVP and
(30:36):
Shay Gildess Alexander and the Spurs are the ones who
have something to prove here.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
I want to go back to the Lakers for a
moment here, And with Luca missing the rest of the
regular season, if he does miss all of it, which
we're all expecting he will, he'll be one game short
for season awards. What are your thoughts about that sixty
five game eligibility rule for someone who has had such
a history work season. I mean, they're the list of
(31:02):
superstars that will not qualify this year. Makes you think
that they have to adjust this rule?
Speaker 9 (31:08):
Yes, I think they're going to have to change it.
And before we get into that, I want to add
that Luca's agent, Phil Duffy, released a statement in which
he said that he is going to apply for an
exception for Luca, who went back to Slovenia to witness
the birth of his child. There is an exception that
you can apply for, so there is a chance that
(31:30):
Luca may still be eligible for awards, which I really
hope he gets. I mean, he led the league in
scoring that's insane, third and assist sixth and steals, So
that being said, hopefully Luke, I mean for him not
to even get all creating all NBA honors, it.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
Would be like shocking, that's insane.
Speaker 9 (31:47):
That said, Yeah, Alex, great point. Read the sixty five
game rule. I mean, an it's not going to be eligible.
Somebody like Lebron's not going to be eligible.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
You have so.
Speaker 9 (31:57):
Many superstars just knocked off by game or two, and
it just seems arbitrary and it seems like something's going
to need to change because there's just too many great
guys who have had spectacular seasons being left off that list.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
I want to get to the other side of the
league because I think that Detroit Pistons fans are I'm honestly,
as someone who grew up up in Chicago Bulls fan,
I really can't believe I'm saying it, but I'm happy
for the Pistons. It looks like I am. This has
been a long suffering franchise since this, like just like
(32:32):
the Bulls have for I mean, the Bulls are still suffering.
Don't get me started on that. But you know they
lead the Eastern Conference. They I was gonna say, our
potechnical producer Chris Burfett is a Detroit Pistons fan, so
I knew that was happening. But is this Is this
the Pistons year? Is this going to happen? Are they
going to cruise to the Eastern Conference finals? Are they
(32:53):
going to cruise to the champion that are? Can they
challenge for the NBA title this year?
Speaker 9 (33:03):
I definitely don't think they're going to cruise to the East.
Even though they're the East top seed, I still think
they have a lot to prove come playoff time. This
team was a really good team in the regular season,
but the playoffs are completely different beasts and they don't
have that type of experience and how's Cade.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
Going to do?
Speaker 9 (33:20):
Those are all, you know, things that remain to be
steams exactly exactly. And then you have a lot of
other really good teams in the East, like the Celtics
behind Dalen Brown have been really really good. The Knicks,
I wouldn't count them out. I definitely don't see the
(33:42):
Pistons as shoein's for the finals.
Speaker 10 (33:44):
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Okay, Now I want to talk about the King real quick.
Lebron James. He will hit free agency this summer. Where
do you feel and see him playing next year?
Speaker 9 (33:56):
So that's an interesting thing, which I actually was his
writing about before he called us. Well, it's interesting because
obviously Lebron has not decided yet what he's going to
do about his future. He becomes an unrestricted free agent
after this season, and I think a lot of what
he was going to decide was going to come down
(34:18):
to what happened during this postseason. Yes, and you know,
just a couple of days ago, before Luca went down
on Thursday, the Lakers looked like real contenders. And if
the Lakers made a deep postseason run, and you know,
obviously Lebron had embraced the third option on the team
and if things were rolling, and I'll tell you this,
vibes in the locker room are really really good, Like
(34:40):
I really could have seen him coming back to the Lakers.
And now that Luca's injury has happened, and there's so
many question marks around the team, I think it creates many, many,
many more question marks around Lebron's future.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
I agree, Melissa. Thank you so much for joining us.
You were wonderful.
Speaker 9 (34:59):
Absolutely, thank you both so much for having me on.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
Thanks Melissa.
Speaker 2 (35:03):

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Just do it, all right, guys, It's time for the
dues and don'ts in sports highlighting DH. I love that
putting a spotlight on the don't the subject brings me
no joy.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
Don't do that.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
That's insane.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
It's time for the dues and the don'ts in sports, all.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Right, krmie my do I witnessed live last night. I
was at the Angels home opener. Love my Angel's family.
First of all, shout out first time I've been back
since my last broadcast five years ago, and all the fields,
all the emotions. But my first do is do know
your timing. Baseball is a sport that usually starts on time.
(36:39):
The first pitch has a time, and it's like they're
pretty strict to that. So when you say first pitch
is at six thirty eight, usually it's within a couple
minutes of that, right, But last night for the Angel's
home opener, I don't think anybody told the flyover that
the home opening ceremony was gonna push that back a
little bit for the anthem, and I gotta like hats off,
(37:01):
like stand up standing.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Oh for the anthem singer.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Who was a queen who understood the assignment because they
had old sprop planes that you could see in the
distance like for twenty minutes, just kind of circling in
the distance waiting to come for the flyover.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
And once she started the anthem, I was.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Like, I don't know if they're gonna make it in time. Oh,
they're definitely not gonna make it in time. We're on
the last verse of the anthem here. So when she
noticed that too, I don't know if someone got in
her ear or what was happening, but she saw they
were not going to make the flyover for the last note,
so she would pause for like twenty seconds between each
(37:41):
word in the last sentence.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Of the anthem, just so the flyover could make.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
It in time.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
And it was I mean, it was honestly hilarious.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
It was an iconic move by the anthem singer very
on brand for the Angels, and it was just it
was hilarious.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
It was hilarious. Would be if anybody bet the over
on anthem time.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Yeah, making some monies, all.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
Right, mine is a due and it is do stay
with the spirit of the rule. I was trying to
fit this into the show because I am irate, I
am livid, I am I am so annoyed with the
league right now, the NFL because the Chicago Bears allowed
their assistant general manager Ian Conningham to interview and ultimately
(38:31):
get the GM job in Atlanta. Atlanta also hired Matt
Ryan as their president of football Operations. Well, Matt Ryan
has never been an executive before. Matt Ryan had a
very long playing career, a lot of which was with Atlanta,
and that's great that he is in this position. But
Ian Cunningham is the general manager. He has. Matt Ryan
even said Ian Cunningham has roster control. He is a
(38:54):
general manager. He was in the general manager's photo at
NFL owners meetings. And according to the Rooney Rule, part
of the spirit of the Rooney rule and the extended
part of the Rooney rule is that if you hire
away a minority, either head coach or you know, a
high level executive general manager. Then the team that you
(39:18):
that you hired this person from gets awarded compicks. The
Bears did not get compicks Cunningham. They should have been
eligible for two third round picks for letting Ian Cunningham
ultimately interview for this job and get this job, because
teams have the ability to block something like that. The
Bears did not. They said, great, go Forth promotion, this
(39:41):
is amazing, You're a great person. The league then did
not award the Bears. The Bears then went to New
York went to the league office. Their owner George McCaskey,
Ryan pulls their current GM. I don't know who else
was there, but they went to appeal this and the
NFL shut them down again, and it is the most
out ill for the NFL to die house. They said
(40:03):
that Matt Ryan is the one that has he's higher
on the football food No, And I'm like, no, If
that's true, then look at all the ORG charts across
the league, and I guarantee you there are because there
are some team presidents on an ORC chart that are
listed above the general manager. It does not mean that
(40:23):
they that that general manager has any less of a
say when it comes to roster building or building the team,
or doing what a general manager does. So why saying
that the league is dying. It's a dangerous precedent that
they're saying, making a mockery of the Rooney rule.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
Oh, don't appreciate it that.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
Like, that's kind of ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
Could talk about this for twenty minutes.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
That's ridiculous. All right, We're gonna take a break here.
When we come back, there is trouble in Philly. You're
Latin to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (40:55):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Welcome to our two IF Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex
Curry here with Carmen Vitali. Thank you for spending your
Saturday after noon with us, Happy madness. We are just
about an hour away for the men's final four tipping off.
You got number three Illinois against number two Yukon at
three on nine Pacific, six' oh Nine eastern and number
(41:19):
One michigan against number One arizona later. Tonight women's final
Is South carolina Versus ucla tomorrow. AFTERNOON karmei thinks it's
going to be a. Blowout i'm just hoping for a
good game. Here It's UCLA's first time in school history
making it to the, Final so, LIKE i just want
a good.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
Game on the team you want to, SEE i just
want a good. Game the women's championship was Really, yukon and,
yeah and Then South carolina.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
That wasn't even a great, game, RIGHT.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
I mean that's what and that's What carolina just WHAT
i own, Them.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
That's What i'm. Saying South carolina Forced yukon into playing
something that didn't even resemble their. Game yukon is all about,
pace they are all They're they're very they were a
very fast paced. Team they want us at the, tone
they want us at the, rhythm And South carolina just
prevented them from getting into any sort of rhythm in
that second. HALF i, mean they absolutely Forced yukon into
(42:13):
a game that was very unfamiliar to. Them SO i
can't even.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Imagine that's what worries me Because, ucla like they they
don't make great adjustments mid. Game SO i they have
a great game and when it's going, WELL i mean
they've been averaging what like twenty seven points in their
wins throughout this. Tournament but this Is, yeah this is
gonna be the toughest one, yet AND i don't can they.
(42:37):
Adjust if they can adjust to Whatever South carolina throws at,
them maybe there's a chance for it to be a good.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
GAME i hope so ALL i hope for in like.
Speaker 4 (42:46):
Finals South carolina's defense just put on a masterclass last.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
NIGHT i, guess, yeah that's TOUGH.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
Carmei come on In, chicago everybody is very very excited
for tip off of The illinois. Game every single bar
we are We i'm we're taking my sister in law
out for her for her, birthday so we're not actually
going to a, bar Which i'm kind of glad about, because,
uh last the last game That illinois played to get
(43:15):
into The final, four we were we went out just
to like we wanted to tell a little bar. Set no, no,
no we we weren't going out for the. Game we
just wanted to have a little bar. Set and WHEN
i tell, you we had to try four different bars
because it was every single bar was backed to the
brim With illinois fans like if, this if that bar
had a, television it was completely Over illinois. FANS i
(43:39):
mean That's. Chicago that's there's like there's a ton of
graduates From illinois that live, here and this city is
just feral for any sort of success sports success. Anyway
so the city is. Electric i've The Sears, tower WHICH
i know it's the littlest tower, guys BUT i don't
call it. That i'm a. PURIST i grew up. HERE
i get TO i get to call it The Sears.
Tower The Seers tower has been lit up orange and
(44:00):
blue for THE aligni last couple of. Nights it's it's.
Amazing so the whole city is behind, them and the
and The Balkan. Five everybody's behind The Balkan. Five so
we're real excited For illinois around these.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
PARTS i always, Forget karmie that you're In, chicago And
i'm reminded with this In Central.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
Time in, FACT i, Know.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
I'm, sorry, SORRY i. Forget it's, okay let's talk a
LITTLE nfl because a lot of like random things came
out this. Week it was league. Meetings one OF i
think the funny things that got announced this week is
that the Raining Super bowl champs are going to be
on hard, knocks which is like a eh for. Me
(44:45):
you lost your Super BOWL, mvp you lost your offensive
coordinator to The. Raiders normally this can be a distraction
and they have to force teams to do. This so
OBVIOUSLY i think they forced these two teams because they
announced this year and next, year which are the two
teams that were in The Super. Bowl you got The
seahawks this year and you got The patriots next. Year
and it just feels LIKE i think there was a
(45:07):
REPORT i forget who put it out that they basically
just like called The patriots bluff where they're, like, oh
we'll do it next. Year they're, like, great we're locking you.
In you are in for next, year and we are announcing.
It it's just, like are we kind of Over Hard?
Speaker 4 (45:20):
Knocks, well so this is this is What ACTUALLY i
can bring this all back to my rant of the
league adding games on different date and days of the
week and different times and. WHATEVER i. Think i'm went
on this rant With tracy but talked To they're diluting
the league is diluting their. Product and that's What Hard knocks.
(45:40):
Did Hard knocks diluted their. Product Hard knocks like the
true the Original Hard knocks that followed a team during. Training,
yeah was appointment. VIEWING i was part of. It WHEN
i was with The, bucks we got to we had
The Hard knocks crew in and like following everybody. Around
it's an incredible. Operation these people work around the clock
literally to get these episodes out because you will literally
(46:03):
see stuff that happened two days before or the day
before then make it to, air which is, wild but
there are now. There they've just done too much with.
It it's not just training. Camp now you have the end,
season and then you Had amazon that did the all
or nothing and then like you had, there it's too.
Much it's too, much it's no longer appointment, viewing and
(46:24):
they're diluting. It it'll be interesting to see teams that
are like actually good because so the other thing is
too Is Hard. Knocks there were at least qualifications and
rules like you can't have made the, playoffs you can't
have a new head, coach you can't like. That there's
all these qualifications you have to meet to be.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
On all the teams that were eligible this year Were, Broncos, Bengals, Colts, Texans, Jags, Chiefs, Packers, Vikings, Eagles, Commanders, Panthers, Saints,
bucks forty Nine, Ers, Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
Pats, now If.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
I'm looking at that, list gimme chiefs Are, Eagles mahomes
come in? Back Possible kelsey's last. Year maybe we get
a little t swift in Their. Eagles the, Drama oh,
god that would be. Beautiful that would be must WATCH.
Tv those two, TEAMS i would sit down and clock.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
IN i JUST i just Think Hard knocks has deluted their. Product,
yes like the division stuff now it's too, much it's too.
Much it's too. Much, sometimes you, know supplying, demand you
need to shrink the. Supply so people demanded.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
More, yeah, Okay so some other news that came out
OF Nfl league meeting Week, Now i'm not sure if
it's just officially coming out because everyone was. Together but
you have to remember there was always a reason stories
come out when they. Do people want them, out people
want them. Leaked there is. Timing and this week is
(47:50):
that vibes are off In.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
Philly, Right Jalen.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Hurts doesn't always buy, in and we all kind of
knew that vibes were off In, philly. Right we saw
with Aj brown and Ex sirianni on the sidelines last.
Year you could just tell, Something, well.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
The positivity rabbit doesn't tell you that things are going, well.
Speaker 2 (48:08):
And no one loves it's not bringing. Positivity players are
like wtff is going. ON i don't get. It this
makes zero.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
Sense and if you have to do something as insane
as putting a giant blow up bunny.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
In a locker room makes, sense that.
Speaker 4 (48:23):
Doesn't that doesn't signal to me that things are going,
well because clearly you're trying other things and then this
is what you landed, on which is still. Unfathomable it's
just but this was So Jeremy fowler did some excellent
reporting on all of, this and this was, weeks if
(48:43):
not months in the, making because it didn't all just
come out of owners, meetings because he had so many
sources and so many sources were talking to. Him and
that's where my little journalistic antennas go up Where i'm, like, hey,
hey this many people don't. Talk, yes you don't get
this many sources unless people want something to be known
(49:04):
so that it saves them in some. Way there's always
an agenda behind this kind of stuff, always so with
the way that The, eagles it was a very tumultuous
season for. Them they were obviously didn't you, know make
it to The Super bowl And, honestly we're all grateful
for it because we're all tired of it unless you're In,
Philly AND i get it BECAUSE i have all my
dad's entire Families eagles. FANS I yea heard. It i've
(49:26):
heard it. All but that was, like there were clearly
some big fractures in what was happening in that, building
what was happening on the practice field versus what was
being shown to the public or what the public was
thinking or. Whatever so now you have all these sources
and again some great reporting By Jeremy FOWLER espn to
(49:48):
get all of this and and put it all together
and paint a picture for us of what's. Happening and
now that some of this is coming out, too it
makes a lot of other stuff makes, sense, like for,
instance Cal, moore who had a very good stint In
dallas as their offensive coordinator and constructed a really good
offense that you, Know Dak prescott had some of his
(50:10):
best years Under Kellen, moore and they Had dallas had
some of its most production production offensive production Under Kellen.
Moore and then he gets To philly and you're, like
wait a, second you just changed everything about your. System, Why,
yeah and it's, like, oh Because Jalen hurts can't execute
the system that you were brought in to. Implement and so,
(50:31):
now of course there's. Fractures of course there's differing. Ideas
of course there's friction and tension and whatever because you
are trying to set up someone that perhaps doesn't have
the ability that you were. Sold and that's it all
makes sense once you realize too that there have been
multiple coordinators to come in and out Of.
Speaker 3 (50:52):
Philly, yeah that and They, yeah they have a new
they have a newc coming.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
In he's gonna need to be more flexible and buy
it if he wants to make this. Work he really
only has one more year guaranteed on their. Contract and
we have Seen philly is not afraid to move off people.
Speaker 4 (51:07):
And and like they HAVE i always say that they you,
know they're very creative in the way that they construct their,
roster they build their roster and all this other. Stuff
and what at some point you're going to have to
get to is DO i have to be extra creative
because of the limitations Of Jalen, hurts whether that's because
of what he can do, physically whether that's because of
(51:28):
his leadership skills or lack thereof whatever it.
Speaker 3 (51:31):
Is we'll not. Like that was part of the article Natural.
Speaker 4 (51:34):
Leader, right that was part of the article how much
more creative do we want to keep? Being and is
that beneficial to the team as a whole or is
the path of least resistance to Let Jalen hurts Go
and THAT'S i, think and then.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
To keep Aj?
Speaker 3 (51:49):
Brown like this is a question.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Too do you see them do you see them trading
this is why we haven't seen them be so aggressive
in Trading Aj?
Speaker 3 (51:58):
Brown or they do not getting what they want FOR i.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
Don't, well WHAT i was trying to get at here
is just like clearly there are different people in the
building think differently for how to attack this. Situation, yeah
so there there seems to be some dissent In philly
in the building of how to solve all of these
issues that they're. Having And i'm sure there are people
in the building that are, saying, yeah let's Trade jalen
(52:24):
and let's KEEP Aj brown OR i don't, know trade
them both and whatever like or you, know at this,
point who are you really going to get that's? Better
and maybe next, year you, know with the out In jalen's,
contract this that the. Other, Like i'm sure that there
are differing opinions in that building and that is what's
been causing. Tension and it doesn't sound like this is
(52:44):
a new. Thing it sounds like these have Been.
Speaker 3 (52:47):
We've seen it for the last two.
Speaker 4 (52:48):
Years that's What i'm, saying is, like there clearly has
been some disagreement among individuals within the league's at The
eagles front office of how to Handle jalen Her it's
how to handle this, offense how to handle this team,
structure the roster and all of. That and that's kind
of why we're seeing these fractures and we're seeing these,
cracks and we're seeing positivity rabbits in the middle of
(53:10):
The eagles locker.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
Room people show you how they feel and who they,
are so believe them and believe your eyes when you see.
It we all saw it on the, sidelines we all
saw it in the postgame. Interviews they came out and
try to like put it, down but, no like.
Speaker 4 (53:25):
You're gonna tell, me like your actions are going to
tell me more than anything that comes out of your. Mouth,
yes there is another it's part of The it's more
part of the diluting of the product THAT i want
to get to real quick about what came out of
owners because there's a lot of rule changes that came
out of owners. Meetings one of them is infuriating to.
(53:46):
Me which, one and it is that THE nfl owners
have approved a change to the scheduling policy that clarifies
That friday games are no longer considered short. Weeks what
which is the most insane THING i had ever? Heard
WHEN i read that two days my job dropped open
because previously teams have been limited to just two short
(54:07):
week games per, season and which is Usually, thursdays, right
because you have less rest and it's really hard to,
recover and it's really really hard on these, guys even.
Speaker 2 (54:15):
Though they get say it's like you get in a
car accident and you're recovering from that every.
Speaker 4 (54:19):
Week every, Week, yes and then if you have four
days to do, that that's insane and yuess they get
the mini buy on the other side of. It but
with the rise Of friday games like black The Black friday,
games or Like christmas was on A friday this, year
those wouldn't count against the limit to how many short
week games you could play Because Apparently friday is not
considered a short, week.
Speaker 3 (54:39):
Which is insane to me because.
Speaker 4 (54:42):
Even if you Play monday, night that next week is
considered a short week for. Teams teams have their recovery
like down to a, science down to the, Hour like
if you Play sunday at noon versus The sunday night,
game things are completely different as far as when you
work out when you have to like throughout the whole.
Week it pushes everything back in so to do to
(55:05):
not consider a game that takes place two days before
your Normal sunday game a short week is absolutely wild to,
me and it is just the Next like this was
essentially to add more flexibility for the streaming, services for
like for the, networks AND.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
I mean that's what it all is coming from. Anyways
and then you're talking about how they make these, decisions.
Speaker 4 (55:28):
Whether it's the that or it's adding an eighteenth game
or like this that the. Other it is all to
essentially make more, money but it comes at the expensive player.
Safety And i'm so tired of people preaching player safety
and then turning around and, saying, No fridays aren't short,
weeks go tell any especially like the guys that are
(55:49):
in the trenches getting hit on every single, Play, like
go tell those guys that they have to be ready
to play two days, before but they're not going to
get the benefit of a short week and that's not
going to count towards what so they could Conceivably god
some of these some of these, teams like The, chiefs for,
instance who play On christmas and who THE nfl wants
to isolate in these single viewing. Windows try telling them
(56:11):
that they had to play Two friday games like would
have happened this, year and Two thursday night. GAMES i mean,
that and it Just i'm SO i love the.
Speaker 2 (56:21):
Fire i'm infuriating AND i love. Them i'm so curious
because you were, LIKE i want to talk. RULES i
did not have that down on my list of rules
that you were going to go off. On BECAUSE i have.
Speaker 4 (56:32):
There are things that make me go off BECAUSE i
want this game to be, safe BECAUSE i love this
game so, much AND i want the AND I i've
seen firsthand in so many occasions for so many of
my friends that have played this game for a long.
Time i've seen the toll it takes on, them And
i've seen the recovery that needs to, happen and we
are completely taking advantage of that for none other than
money and. Greed and it, really, really that's like one
(56:52):
of MY i don't even want to call it pet
peeve because it is so much more than. That it's
so infuriating to, me AND i feel so badly AND
i wish that THE nflpa was more organized that they
could push back on stuff like, this but they can't
because they're not organized.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
Enough have you heard player? Reactions have you talked to guys,
like is it getting as much heat and emotion as
you're feeling right?
Speaker 4 (57:12):
Now not this, specifically BECAUSE i haven't talked to anybody
about this rule change, specifically but When i've talked to
you guys about The christmas, game Because christmas is like
on A wednesday and having to get rid of that
or get like figured that. Out And i've talked to
guys about the short Weeks i've witnessed guys having to
get ready For thursday. GAMES i, like it's it's. Insane
(57:34):
LIKE i had a really good friend of mine who
got hurt on A sunday night game and they would
and we were. Playing it was WHEN i was with
The bucks and we were playing on That thursday night,
game and what he did to get ready for That
thursday game was the most Insane i've ever. Seen he
was in the training room all day every, day getting different,
treatments different work out like the way that he had
(57:55):
to eat certain things at certain times and he had
just like it was and it was. EXCRUCIATING i, mean
this guy couldn't even walk for the first two, Days
i'm not, kidding and then he turned around and played
a game fourty eight hours after he was able to stand, Upright,
like it's just so incredibly hard on these guys', bodies
AND i don't feel right about sacrificing their, health especially
(58:18):
when we have THE nflpa fighting for lifetime healthcare FOR
nfl players because they only have five years after they're done,
playing which is, wild and, yeah that's. Insane so like
it's there's so much contradiction when it comes to this
kind of. Stuff so it's a really hot button. Issue
and it's, Because, Yeah i've talked to so many different
guys about rules like this that just completely ignore player,
(58:38):
safety and they feel it and they don't feel, valued
and they don't feel taken care, of and they don't
feel like. It really it wins on, them just guys
Like Drew Doman. Early.
Speaker 2 (58:49):
Yeah if you're just tuning, in this Is karmi getting
heated That friday games are now not considered a short. Week,
yes which is. WILD i love the, Heat karmi bringing.
It we're gonna take a quick break here when we come.

is about pro sports for, Them, Like i'm not gonna
in front like northwyt and said that The Chicago's big ten,
Team But i'm, like, no not really if, Anything, like,
yeah when it came time for Like March, madness everybody
kind of just hops on The illinois. Bandwagon that's HOW
i was growing. Up and like but like WHEN i
(01:01:13):
was in high, school like that you're talking about two
thousan and. Five that was the last time they were
in the final. Four They that was also the first
year that my dance team from high school went to,
state And state was Held Assembly hall where THE aligni
played basketball and we got to use the home men's
locker room as our locker. Room AND i remember we
left De brown a note in his locker because we
(01:01:36):
were like so just.
Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
Like oh my, god.
Speaker 4 (01:01:41):
So like he got a note from like The York
High School palms team just like in his, locker like so.
Creepy BUT i love that so. Much IT'S i, mean
it's a huge deal here In. Chicago obviously there's a
ton of kids that from The chicagoland area that ended
up going To. ILLINOIS i was my parents wanted me
to go To illinois AND i. Didn't ACTUALLY i got it,
though and then, yeah it's great. Cool and then you,
(01:02:05):
know even if you aren't from The chicagoland, area if
you do go To. Illinois there's so much Like illinois
has a campus here In, chicago a, big big campus
here In. Chicago so there's just a lot of common
thread and it's only two hours. Away so the city
is bumping right. Now uh. Huh there is orange and blue,
everywhere AND i Am i'm nervous for. HIM i Like
(01:02:29):
yukon has a lot of that's the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
Point one and a half point favorites a coin flip
and both these games are one and half point. Favorites
then later tonight we got number One michigan against number One.
Arizona michigan's a one and half point. Favorite, ALSO i also.

All the people From michigan end up and either on either.
Speaker 10 (01:03:24):

Michigan michigan And.

Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
Six that game was called in the eighth inning due to.
Speaker 8 (01:04:55):
RAIN A tiger's Pitcher Justin berland is also going to

your game got. Canceled so he got. Canceled, YEAH i
texted you, That.
Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
Alex.
Speaker 10 (01:06:28):
Yeah weird weather In. Cleveland the case here in The
midwest around this time of. Year high temperatures was about
eighty degrees almost. Today there's a lot of storms in the.
Area they, decided, hey let's not waste out some starting,
pitching and they're gonna go ahead and and postpone.
Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
It adam gets to come back. Home he gets to
come back To.
Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
Chicago, okay so let's start with. Baseball since you know
you were in the baseball mindset about to call a game.
Today Negative free b big change of season with a
NEW abs challenge, system do you love it or do
you hate?
Speaker 10 (01:06:59):
IT i won't go as extreme as to say love.
IT i definitely do not hate. IT i think it's
it's fascinating to. WATCH i think it's better for the game.
OVERALL i do think that it's gonna make umpires. Sharper we're.
In we had an interesting conversation With Craig council as
the manager of The, cubs and he was saying that
they've actually been very fortunate where they've had a couple
(01:07:20):
of games this season out of the seven they've played
where they've had two, fantastic well called near perfect games
from an. Umpire AND i do think that some of
the umpires look at the system and look at it
as something that's going to help sharpen. Them they're going
to make. ADJUSTMENTS i know it takes away some of
the interesting human, elements but it also adds some more to.
It and you, know so, far it's been relatively. Even
(01:07:43):
and you, KNOW i was working with you, know The
hall of Famer John smoltz tonight and he made a
salient comment that he thought that maybe this would hurt
the umpires a lot. More he thought maybe this would,
really you, know be heavily skewed in favor of catchers and,
batters and that really hasn't the. Case it's about fifty
three forty seven wow far in terms of, overturn so
(01:08:03):
that it's making slight incremental positive changes in terms of
how games are called so. Far let's hope that that
ends up being the cases as teams refine how they
use it and how umpires are find how they continue
to call.
Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
Games, YEAH i, say IF i know anything about, baseball
there are going to be stats that come out of
this that are being kept track of to see just
how much of an impact this is having on the.
Game and it sounds like that's already, started.
Speaker 10 (01:08:30):
Definitely and you, know you can track, everything especially in,
baseball and it's going to be boiled down to the
most minute of. Detail and that's. Fine you. KNOW i
think at the end of the, day, players, coaches, managers,
umpires everybody wants to get the calls. Right and if
this is the end goal of having this system in,
place it seemingly has been the case so. Far let's
(01:08:52):
hope that that ends up being the case full. Time
when this is when we're looking looking at the numbers
at the end of this.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
Season all, right so let's talk a little.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
Football there was an in depth article that came out
this week detailing the tension Between Jalen hurts And, eagles
and like we knew that vibes were off In, philly
how concerned are you for this team going?
Speaker 10 (01:09:13):
Forward i'm a little concerned for what's going on In
philadelphia right.
Speaker 4 (01:09:17):
NOW i think.
Speaker 10 (01:09:18):
There is a Question there have been, questions especially considering
Where Jalen hurts has been the last several. Years he's
had so many different voices in his head in terms
of who's calling plays this.
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
Year Is Kevin.
Speaker 10 (01:09:29):
Patulo he's Had Shane, stike and he's Had sirianni call
plays for him at. Times he's Had Brian, johnson who
he's had a long standing relationship with going back to
his high school days In. Texas he's called plays at
various points and at some point and we've talked to several, Quarterbacks,
KARMEN i know you've had conversations with high level quarterbacks
about this very. Subject it becomes a little bit more
(01:09:49):
difficult and a little more you, know it's a tenuous
relationship at, times especially when results aren't where you want
where you want them to be players aren't. Happy we
Saw Ajay, brown's you, know some of his discontent over
the course of the season this, year and it can
be very. FRUSTRATING i remember having a conversation With Trevor
lawrence about this very subject and he was very thankful
to Have Liam cohen in his. Year AND i, Know,
(01:10:11):
carmen you have a great relationship With liam going back
to The Tampa bay, days like he has an understanding
for How Trevor lawrence works in terms of his, head
and he's helped formulate an offense around. Him jalen has
had those conversations year in and year, out the same
Way trevor did early in his. Careers SO i understand
where it comes. FROM i understand where the frustration comes.
(01:10:31):
FROM i don't know what the solution necessarily is right,
now if it's just the right, voice the right play,
caller BUT i understand where some of the frustrations have.
Speaker 4 (01:10:39):
Come, yeah it seems like we were talking about it,
earlier AND i just seem it seems like people have
different opinions even within the, building and that's where you
see some of these fractures that are coming to light
Of you know that things aren't going, well and that's
why the vibes are a little off In. Philly i'm
also pretty well concerned for. That but we had owners,
meetings we had league meetings a couple week ago at this,
(01:11:00):
point but there were a number of rule. CHANGES i
went off On fridays no longer being considered short weeks
when it counts against you, know you can only play
two of them in a given, season and Now friday
games don't, count which is insane to. Me BUT i
want to go into because you're talking about THE abs
system in baseball and umpires and how that affects. Them
(01:11:22):
the league is facing a reckoning of their own when
it comes to, officiating AND i am very interested to
get your take on what you see happening going, forward
because it sounds like we are getting dangerously close to
having to have real conversations about replacement refs, again AND
i don't want.
Speaker 10 (01:11:40):
To that was a rough go a few years. Back
it's almost a decade and a half ago now at this,
POINT i.
Speaker 4 (01:11:47):
KNOW i was, like, oh, yeah it was like five years.
Speaker 10 (01:11:49):
Ago, no that was a really closer than it actually.
IS i was, like, no that was like twenty. Twelve
the Fail mary In seattle doesn't seem that long. Ago,
suddenly it feels like a lot very very long time.
Ago BUT i mean we have these. Discussions you, KNOW
i cover THE, nba and you, know they've made a
real push to try to bring officials in as full time,
(01:12:11):
employees as guys who basically focus on this year. Round
and THE nfl is such a widely marketed, product as
heavily a money maker as it. Is that's where the
difference lies right. NOW a lot of these guys have regular.
Jobs you, know a lot of the officials in THE nfl,
have you, know their their accountants and their games at small,
(01:12:32):
colleges and you, KNOW i THINK i can't remember if
it Was Adrian. HILL i think he was working for you, KNOW.
Nasa he's an aeronautics. Engine, yeah aeronautics. There And i'm,
like there's a lot of, fascinating you, know secondary you,
know occupations that these guys. Have AND i wonder if
you can get to a point where if their main
(01:12:52):
focus is this because of the money that's riding on,
it because of the value that obviously it has both
economically and culturally to you, know what we do in this.
Country and how much we care about, football then will that? Help?
NOW i understand the argument sometimes against it because people, say,
well you're still gonna have. Mistakes it's a human human
element to, it AND i understand that as. Well but
(01:13:14):
if you're looking for more, reps more, nuanced more time on,
task is that going to help get the officiating to
a better. Spot and if that's the, case why not
why can't that be you, know the same system that
we have in THE nba that we have In Major League,
baseball where these guys are full time employees of the
league and their goal is to be as you, know
(01:13:35):
fully accurate as. Possible i'm not saying that's not the
goal FOR nfl, officials but with this much, pressure the
goal is to be as close to perfect as. Possible
AND i think the only way to do that and
to have you, know guys feel more comfortable that is
more time on. Task And i'd like to think that
the off season would have a good you, know would
be a good time for a lot of those types of.
(01:13:56):
Things so if these guys become full time, employees well
that a motivate them because this is their their, job
this is their. Livelihood full time they don't have to
rely on anything else there IS i would imagine enough
money to be able to support the head because of
where the league is at, FINANCIALLY i would hope that
maybe that would be a nice step towards. THAT i
understand there are some detractors to.
Speaker 2 (01:14:16):
That real, quick before we let you, go Just raiders
Added Kirk cousins to their quarterback. ROOM i called this
a month, ago saying it would be the perfect move
For vegas And Fernando mendoza if they could afford. Him
do you think this was a smart? Move how smart
of a move For?
Speaker 10 (01:14:31):
VEGAS i, mean it's an interesting move because we saw
the same situation In, atlanta right And kirk is still
the type of guy who believes that and then rightfully,
so because we've seen, it believes he can play at a,
very very high level now if the plan is in
place to Sit Fernando mendoza Behind. COUSINS a phenomenal. Teacher
in my, estimation my time Around kirk has, been you,
(01:14:52):
know a Very i've always appreciated because of where his,
heads that how he exacts about the, game he talks
about the. Game he is a wonderfu full guy to
have in your locker room in terms, of, hey this
is HOW i go about my. Business you, know as
much as we Saw Michael TenneT struggle at, TIMES i
do think he garnered a lot From kirk in their
time together In. ATLANTA i think that would be great
For fernando as long as everybody on the same page.
Speaker 1 (01:15:16):
To Kill.
Speaker 10 (01:15:16):
David All, right now we're gonna. Shift, now we're going
to move to a rookie quarterback or it's going to
be year number, two and everybody understands that that's where
the communication has to be really air.
Speaker 2 (01:15:25):
Tight, Yeah i'm excited for. It the two perfect people In,
vegas LIKE i want to be a fly on the
wall back quarterback. Room, adam thank you so much for
still coming on even though your game was, canceled and
please enjoy your day off the rest of your day.
Off we appreciate, you appreciate you.

WELCOME Carmei, Ah i'm so excited for. You i'm so
excited for this let's end things with our feel good
stories of the.
Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
Week mine is just.
Speaker 2 (01:16:57):
Fun the best thing to come out of league meetings
this week was the Annual Coaches Day Drinking. DAY i
did not know this was a.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Thing thank, You Jay.
Speaker 2 (01:17:08):
Glazer that was incredible. Work if you get invited to
the day drinking table he brought us, along that could
have never been a. Woman i'm just gonna put that out,
there BUT i love the fact that he gave us
an inside look and then shared it with the. World
all the, coaches, well twenty eight of the thirty two
(01:17:29):
coaches Plus Michael. Phelps Apparently sean McVay picked up the.
Tab feels very on brand since he said so many
coaches from his In shanahan's coaching tree that are now head.
Coaches i'd just like to see everyone hanging out and getting.
Along Sean payton holding. Court it's a good reminder that
we're all just people doing a. Job whether you're a,
coach a, player A tv, talker we all just love
(01:17:51):
the game and we all love to let loose on.
Speaker 4 (01:17:53):
Trips this is THE Nfl combine in the, nutshell yes,
way like this is essentially what you see walking in any.
Bar it's not all all thirty two of, them but
there was also a contingent watching The yukon upset at
the pool of league. Meetings, yeah so my Friend Brooke
(01:18:14):
pryor posted a. Video she she's been on the, Show
front of the. Show she covers The steelers FOR, espn
does a bunch of mothers of AT. Espn she's, Phenomenal
but she was she took a video at league meetings
and you saw, it Like Less snead was there and
like there was like there was a bunch of people
just kind of like at the pool bar with THE tv.
On it's.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
Hard so because you know you've talked about, this there's
like the unspoken rule of like you're, there but you
don't post the. Video so it's really rare that you
get a video like this and you get a selfie
up close From Jay, glazer look at everybody who's here
day drinking, day like kind of explaining the whole.
Speaker 4 (01:18:53):
Thing it's a little weird for, me but it's like
that that's the benefit of going to these things is
you you get to have these, conversations you get to
hang out in these very low pressure environments and there's
an unspoken and understood rule that like you're not.
Speaker 2 (01:19:08):
There that's WHAT i, thought but like that's. Why it's
like he might have been the only person who could
have gotten away with. That but still it's, like.
Speaker 4 (01:19:16):
YEAH i don't, know it's just a bunch of dudes
hanging out because that's. All that's all these guys. Are
there's just a bunch of, dudes all. Right mine is
SO i grew up In. CHICAGO i grew up A
White sox. FAN i don't hate The, cups but, OKAY
i love The White. Sox and it was because of
the FACT i realized that nobody Outside chicago really roots
for The White. Sox and then they rewarded me in
(01:19:37):
two thousand and five with A World series and the
manager of that, Team Ozzy, gean ye wonderful. Man he
is in and Around. Chicago he is ON chsn, covering
he Does White sox. Games, still he's very involved in the.
ORGANIZATION i had. GOTTEN i had been blessed to be
able to work with him on multiple. Occasions he's a wonderful.
Guy he is so full of. Energy he does not
pay for a thing in this, town rightfully. So and
(01:20:00):
yesterday The White sox announce that they are retiring his
number thirteen journey and they did it on. Air Scott,
pittzednik who was on that, team the hero of that
two thousand and Five World series, team was the one
that Told, ozzy And ozzie kind of broke down into.
Tears he's a very emotional. Man we love that for you,
know because of. Her we love that for. Him, yes
AND i am so. Excited i'm so happy for. Him
(01:20:22):
he's the first manager that will have his jersey retired
for The Chicago wow and deservedly. So so congratulations To
ozzie Gian it's it was a standing ovation At Sox.
PARK i JUST i love.
Speaker 2 (01:20:35):
