Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
All right, why change? Why change? Well, we'll explain that
in just about a minute. Here we go, Good morning, everybody.
This is Fox Sports Sunday and Fox Sports.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Ready.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
He is the man. He is Bucky Brooks. I'm Andy Furman.
Together we're broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
And away we go. And I want to introduce my guy,
the man who played the game. The man who played
the game, so he is able, incredible to talk about
the game. My friend, my partner. They're one and only
Bucky Brooks. Bucky, how are you? It's almost time?

Speaker 4 (00:34):
It is almost How you doing Andy?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
I'm doing great. But you know, everybody's guys salivating because
football is right around the corner. NFL is right there.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
You know.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I'm not I like football, Okay, I go so far
to say maybe I love football college football. I don't
really root for one particular team, but I love watching
college football. And then in the NFL, I watched the games.
But to me, uh, moving to the football season is
a little bit painful because we lose summer. You know,
the weather starts getting bad, the days get shorter here.

(01:05):
So to me, I want to hold on a little
bit longer because I love summertime. I don't know, maybe
I'm the only one who feels that way. Everybody can't
wait for football to start. Hold on just a little
bit longer because I love summertime.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, I'm not with you on that football year. It's
time to get it going. Guys are reporting the camp.
College football is on the horizon. I'm excited. Best time
a here.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I know you why you talk about that? I mean
NFL right around the court. The Charges already have been
at the camp on the sixteenth, four days ago. The
LA Chargers went to camp already, and I guess that's
because they're playing in the game in Canton, so they
want to get a little bit of the headstart. Is
that's the reason why, Because that's to me similar earlier.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
That is why. Yeah, that's why they go earlier. Because
Hall of Fame game and Can all the festivities and activities.
You gotta tam ready to play. So I get again.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Now, are you're gonna be there, You're gonna be up
in Canton.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
No, I will not be in Can.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
I will be in studio NFL Network doing the pre
and postgame.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Ship I'll be watching all right, and speaking of training camp,
this is amazing to me because I remember back in
the day when they went to camp for like six weeks,
and I heard stories from like the Reggie Williams who
played for the Cincinni Bengals. He said he would bring
his own air conditioner. They went to Wilmington College in Wilmington,
Ohio because there was no air conditioning, so I had
to bring their own air conditioner to go and put

(02:20):
in the rooms because it was really brutal up there.
But only five teams are going to go hit the
road for a training camp this year, the Cowboys, the Bills,
the Colts, the Chiefs, and the Steelers. Is there an
advantage to leave town, leave your hometown and go to
a camp to a college campus, like I know the
Steelers have always gone to Litroal, Pennsylvania. I think Saint
Vincent College. Is there an advantage to do that? Or

(02:42):
you're better in your own backyard as most of the
teams are doing right now.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
The advantages really stem from in terms of team building.
So le's about like the ball and more about building
the team. The hours they guys are forced to spend
around each other. You hope that you build some by
and developed the chemistry that you need during the season,
because ultimately it's a team sport, and the more the
team knows each other, trusts each other, and can hold

(03:08):
each other accountable, the better team is going to be.
Those are the advantages, but the costs prevents some teams
from doing it. When you have facilities that you built
specifically for the purpose of practice in those things, you
vacate those things to pay to try and recreate that environment.
A lot of owners, a lot of teams are saying,
from an efficiency standpoint, it doesn't make sense. It's not

(03:29):
physically responsible and it's not the most efficient way to
operate a team.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
How many weeks of preseason did you have what you played?

Speaker 3 (03:39):
I think it was six weeks. I think it was
six weeks four preseason games. You know, the rules were
different because you had two of day's then you didn't
have the limitations that they have in terms of being
in the facility. So it was a long, I would say,
grueling process to a point, more mentally taxing than physically.

(04:00):
It's the uncertainty depending on where you are on the
team in terms of where you rank in the pecking water.
That mental grind in terms of trying to figure out
I'm gonna make it and I'm not gonna make it.
The daily, the day to day stuff, that's what takes
a toll on. Yeah, the physical part is is tough,
but it's really the uncertainty that you're walking around with

(04:20):
that creates the anxiety and distress. Uh, that makes it
a very very difficult, challenging experience.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
I bet now the question I really have right now
because I'm kind of like a foodie kind of guy.
You know, I'm a big pizza hamburger guy. That's me.
That's what I eat. When you went to camp, did
they have in fact a chef there? Because now when
I go down to the Bengals, they have a chef,
you know, for breakfast and lunch and they give them
their meals over there. I don't remember that when they
went to camp for six weeks. Did they have a
club a chef there?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
They did not. I mean, I mean they did kind of,
but not not like that. But yeah, every team have
someone that's in charge of like setting them menu and
doing those things, and every team has an executive chef.
But I don't want you to run around think that
you under Emeralds or Wolfgang Pucks, the latest establishment. I mean,

(05:10):
it's fine, but after a while, you're eating the same
thing in rotation and it all begins to taste the same.
It all kind of blends in because you're so tired
you can't really focus on what it is you're eating
and all of that stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Right, It's like when I went to Timberlake Camp as
a kid, as a camper, the same thing every couple
of days, the same thing. You have no idea what
you're eating, but you eat it because if you don't
eat that, you eat nothing. That's basically it. So I
want to talk about the lady. Can we talk about
some ladies and some women? Can we do that?

Speaker 4 (05:41):
Chris?

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Last night I turned on the WNBA All Star Game.
I was kind of like excited, you know, there was
really nothing else big on, and I said, let me
do that now. I hate to use this term when
it comes to the world of sports, any sport, and
the word I'm going to throw out there is boring.
I hate to use that term because I don't know
how one can can say that a sporting event is boring.

(06:04):
They would only action going on. But I've read in
some reports that they claimed the game last night, which
was one one fifty one to one thirty one by
Team Collier boring, I don't know, but I think if
you kind of move back the curtain a little bit,
peel back the onion, I think they say it's boring
because there was no defense, So defense equates if a
game is boring and not. Perhaps I don't know, because

(06:26):
it was like a wild affair last night, one fifty
one with no defense and they're taking those four point
shots from twenty eight feet out. It was. It was
a game that I just I couldn't get into. It
was just not good to me. But I wouldn't use
the term boring.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
I mean, look, it's different.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I think you know, the WNBA suffers from the same
challenge that you suffer in the NBA when it comes
to an All Star game or all these fours suffer.
Fans want to see a certain intensity and competitiveness that
is not able to exist when players are not playing
for real. This is an All Star game, this is
an exhibition, and there's a competitive nature to it. But

(07:08):
I'm also not going to put myself in harm's way
take I'm not taking any unnecessary risk or anything like that,
and so that's where the rub comes. Fans want to
see a certain level of intensity. Observers want to see that,
but the players want to have fun. They want to
have a good time. They'll compete, but they're only going
to compete to a certain level, right.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
And they were in the T shirts they pay what
you os? I mean, I don't know, do you have
to go down that route? And then when I had
the halftime show, I don't know why the players weren't
than the locker room. They're outside by their bench dancing
with the dancers at halftime. But again, maybe it's more
of a party than a game. It's not like you say,
it's an exhibition.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Who wants to It's a celebration. It's a celebration of
the season and all those things. In terms of the
shirts before the game, I think they're trying to highlight
the disparities. Right. It's been well documented how much WNBA
players make. They're on the lower end of the spectrum
when it comes to the pay. In fact, the three
on three league that Breonna Stewart and some of the

(08:09):
other players are heavily invested in or co owned or founded,
they pay them more to play in a shorter season
of three on three than some players make during the
regular season WNBA, I think it's like seventy five seventy
six thousand. It's kind of the minimum where.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Starting salary seventy eight thousand.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah, I mean, like so when you think of it
that way, it doesn't make sense if you want to
be the premier league and they're having to go overseas
to make serious money, Like that's kind of where the
rub is now. Some will point to the fact that
they would say, like the WNBA is operating in the red,
it hasn't been a profitable business, is being propped up

(08:50):
by the NBA and those things.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
But I think, look, you got to do a deeper dive.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
You have a union that is negotiating, trying to the
best that they can from ownership when it comes to
the CBA, and so you're going to have these moments.
I will never have an issue for people advocating for
themselves and those things. And in the NBA, we've seen
players and in the WNBA new we're seeing players take
to using slogans, t shirts and those things to draw

(09:19):
attention to their causes.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Well, it's good at least the union chief and the
WNBA is not going to strip clubs like in the NFL,
which is.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
A good deal.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Right, that's a good thing.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
I mean that that's not a great look. If that
reportedly happened, it's not the greatest look. Right, it's not
the greatest look.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
I don't think so either. All right, now here, here's
a question for you. Okay, I've always been told and
we know this. I mean, even the most lame individual
will notice that basketball is a team game, right, It's
a team game. Football is a team game, right, Baseball
team game. If it's a team game, why do they
name the team's team Collier? And who is the team Clark?

(09:56):
Why are they named after individuals? It's a team game.
The better Like when the NBA used to have East
versus West. It's a team game. So now what you're
doing is you're highlighting individuals, which creates egos. I mean,
maybe I'm really pushing it right here, but it's a
team game. Making a team it used to be East West.

(10:16):
Now it's the name after individuals. I think it's wrong.
Maybe maybe it's just me, Maybe I'm just being too picky,
But what do you think about that?

Speaker 3 (10:24):
I think you've bean too picky, all right.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
I think no. I think one.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
They're trying to do it because like we do East West,
however you do it, they wanted to take advantage of
the name right, brand brand recognition. So think about Kaitlyn Clark,
how popular she is. It was in Indianapolis, so they
were trying to use her as the highlight and centerpiece.
Of course, it didn't help that she was unable to
participate due to injury, but that was part of that.

(10:53):
Like you build it into the brand, right, they're baking
it into the cookies. So if I put Kaitlyn Clark's name,
because she is the hottest thing, the biggest draw in
the WNBA, you're hoping that more people tune in, more
people come out to see Caitlyn Clark and company take
on the other side.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Okay, here, now I'm going to say this, and I
really honestly mean this. I think the WNBA All Star
Game had more hype than the Major League Baseball All
Star Game. I really believe that. I'm not saying it
was better. Some minds maybe it was better. I don't
think so, but I think the WNBA had more hype.
There was more pr there was more exposure. And look,

(11:31):
I'll give an example. In the morning, I usually turn
on Good Morning America. I watched it for a little bit,
not the entire show. Robin Roberts on Friday was in
Indianapolis interviewing the player's life. Now I get it. I
know Good Morning America's on ABC and the game was
on ABC, so they're promoting it. I get that. But
she was not in Atlanta for the Major League Baseball
All Star Game. So I think right there there was

(11:52):
more hype for the WNBA than the Major League Baseball game.
Is there more ines in the WNBA? Perhaps, And I
want to ask you this when I say change, is it?
Is it the game itself? Well, perhaps the timing, because
I think the WNBA has a great niche because the
WNBA has no real sports competition right now. Nothing's going on.

(12:14):
What's happening now Canadian Football, Women's Pro soccer, Major League Baseball,
and MLS Major League Soccer. They have it. They have
it right there. There's nothing else really going on. If
the WNBA played in November, these they're gonna move to
November a little bit now with the expansion. I don't
think they're going to get the hype that they get
right now.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
M I mean like timing is everything, and this is
the sweet spot when it comes to timing, right, it's
the sweet spot because you don't have much going on
or whatever.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Now.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
The problem is if it ended around this time or
if it ended like early, it'll be fine. You just don't.
I'm just telling you, man, it's the it's the monster
of the NFL and college football. You want to be
done with your work before they get cooking. And so
it's just important that you get all that stuff lined up.
And this is the sweet spot because July is the

(13:07):
dead period when it comes to football. That's when you
can get most eyes on.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
You, right, and they're smut. But they're gonna expand, and
they said they're gonna play into November and it's gonna
be tough. You know, at first, it would be tough
for TV when it's gonna be on Sunday. No one's
gonna watch on Sunday's all football.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
It'll be rough, no one's gonna watch.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Now. I like the expansion because what they're doing is
they're expanding back to some original cities. Thing about the
Cleveland Rockers and how good they were the Detroit Shock,
who's won a couple of titles, the players that have
come through there, so that that is great. I love
the expansion part of what they're doing. They just have
to make sure that they don't necessarily overplay their hand

(13:47):
and they put themselves in the best position to succeed
long term. And so if that is being a summer
league only type program or whatever it is, they just
should make sure.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
That they keep the main thing, the main thing, which
is increasing.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
The visibility on the league, taking advantage of that that
did period that exists before the NFL regular season kicks off.
As long as they do that, they'll be fine. But
if you talk about going into November, yeah, you're gonna lose.
You can lose momentum once you get.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Into college basketball starts.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
I know it's gonna watch. Yeah, I mean, it's just
too many things going on between the two footballs, pro
and college. There's not enough space to figure out when.
I mean, you're only gonna be the die hards will
be the only ones to tune in.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
You're exactly right. Now, let's go back in time a
little bit. Major League Baseball's All Star Game. Okay, and
end of the game ended in a tie. Do you
realize that this game ended in a tie? Then I
had this so called swing off? Really a swing off,
that's that's a freaking carnival, That's what it is. Let
him play the game. And I looked at the stats
after the game. They do not have a winning or

(14:55):
a losing pitcher in this year's All Star Game. Everybody
was so happy. Why am I the only one that
did not like the swing off? I thought it was
a conov I thought it was a joke. You play
the entire game and you have like a home run
derby thing. Come on, I mean, it's it's it doesn't
make any sense. I mean, play the game of base
I didn't like when they have the extra inning game

(15:15):
when they put the guy in second base. That I
don't like either. Pitch clock I can live with that.
But honestly, what people are concerned with time, I get it.
People are always in a rush, especially the younger generation.
Baseball is timeless. It should be timeless. That makes it beautiful. Really,
I've talked about soccer for a second. Buff here in
soccer after ninety minutes, where they have they got to shootout.

(15:36):
I know it's exciting, but these guys are killing themselves
for ninety minutes, and an old boils down to a
couple of guys shooting a ball into a net one
on one for five guys, it doesn't make any sense.
The skill level is gone down the drain for some
guy just taking a free kick. The same thing with
with with the baseball game with the swing away there,

(15:57):
you know, with the swing thing at this swing off,
I didn't like it, and I may be the only
one that doesn't like it. Did you like the swing
off at the end?

Speaker 3 (16:05):
Yeah, I mean I'm okay with it because I think
what you're trying to do is you're trying to operate
in a box. When it comes to time blocks. The
thing that we know about football, football is going to
be in general, and the NFL is gonna be three
hours and thirty minutes, you know, one o'clock game, four
thirty start for the next one. That's how it operates.
When it comes to TV Land with baseball, because you're

(16:28):
talking about baseball is whatever. It's hard to plan if
you're a station a network for baseball because of the uncertainty,
they would like to get it in in a block
so you could fill out your programming.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
That's why they had to move it.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
You can't have a five hour game one day than
a ninety minute game the next.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
How do you account for the programming? It is a
bigger thing.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
And like MLB understands that, and that's why they've tried
to make the game consistent.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
When it comes to amount of time that you have to.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Devote, it never happens because there's a weather factor. Two
would rain delays the percent level happened, right.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, yeah, like some of that uncertainty,
like you understand, but it's not gonna be a rain
delay every day. The thing that you can control. If
you have a pitch clock and all these things, you
can get it into a roundabout box in nature where
you say, hey, let's program it from one to four,
like it should never go longer than three hours. So
we're good. But it's the uncertainteam that was killing man.

(17:24):
You used to have four and five hour games. And
I know you're a hardcore baseball fan and I love baseball,
but it's hard to devote five hours to the sport
and say.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
That you double heads. You started one the clocket finished
at seven. Used to have double heathers that's kind. But
they didn't get rid of the double headers because of time.
They got rid of them because they want the two admissions.
That's when I got rid of them. That's why owners
did it.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
I mean, it's all about the money.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
But the time block is money relays related because of
the networks. And so if the network is saying we'll
give you this money, but we need the product to
be like this, well then you a minimal to those
suggestions because you want the money. Right.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
But let me just throw this out there. If baseball
wants to change one thing, I'll tell you what they
need to change after eighty one games, which is half
the season, to declare a winner. Forget about the wild card.
The team that wins the first half of the season
is that champion, and they'll be in the playoffs and
start fresh after eighty one games. Because if you're a
fan of the Colorado Rockies, if it doesn't pay to

(18:24):
go to a baseball game right now because they're like
seventy five games out of first place, it's ridiculous. Give
them a shot. Give teams a second chance, so they
start zero zero after eighty one games. Two half seasons,
and the one who wins the first half is automatically
in the playoffs. That's what they should do. That would
be exciting. It keeps the momentum going for teams that
are basically out of the race early on, and maybe

(18:45):
they could come back. Your thoughts, I mean, I think
they need to do that. That would really help.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
I mean it's not a bad idea. I mean, I'm
okay with the idea. I don't hate it.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
The first time you gave me credit that I love it.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
Oh yeah, that's not a bad idea. I mean it's okay.
That's fine some of this stuff.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Yeah right, huh.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
I mean it might be your best I did it.

I have asked Bucky in about ten twelve minutes from now,

(21:14):
I want to see some of the teams that might
be called classified as underrated this year. And I'm looking
at them and one of them to me, are you
a Jacksonville Jaguars. Do you agree that they're going to
be underrated? I believe that I think they will be.

Speaker 3 (21:30):
I mean, I think they are underrated, but I think
it's deserved. They haven't they haven't achieved at the level
that their talent with suggested they will achieve. I'm optimistic
that things will be different, not only with the coaches
kind of bringing in a different approach, a different philosophy,
but some of the players are different. Travis Hunter is
a huge factor as a two way standout, someone that

(21:52):
can make contributions on both sides of the ball. And
then you're counting on the continued development of Brian Thomas Junior.
You have so many the guys on defense, Ivon Walker
and josh een Zallen that you count on to play
at what I call a blue chip level. Yeah, if
those guys play up to their potential, yeah, the team
could be Look, they can be in contention for a

(22:13):
division playoff spot and more. It just depends on how
it plays out. But a lot of his own DM
con and that staff to get them right.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Well, I will say this, you know too many people
who kind of make these so called preseason predictions depend
on what happened in the past. Sometimes the past doesn't
basically tell us what the future is going to bring.
What I mean by that they were in the playoffs
in twenty twenty two year Jags. Okay, then they went
back in twenty twenty three, and then last year they
were like no where to be found. They were like
four and thirteen. But Doug Peterson got fired, they got

(22:42):
a new coach, a young guy coach, Liam Cohen, and
then they got a young general manager. I think that
really helps these young guys. I mean, I'm not a
young guy, but these guys are young. New GM Gladstone
doing well. But the good news, I think the best
news ever for your Jags is the fact that they're
in the AFC South. Detexans went back to championships in
the division, but you got Tennessee they're terrible, and Indianapolis

(23:04):
to they have no idea who's going to play quarterback.
So I think Jacksonville has a good shot in that
division to really make some noise.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Well, I would say that the quarterbacks that you mentioned,
that is where the uncertainty comes from. If you tell
me your quarterback, I can pretty much tell you your future.
And right now you have a lot of unknowns at
the quarterback position that even includes Jacksonville. When it relates
to Trevor Lawrence, can he play at the level at
which people are saying.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
He's getting paid at?

Speaker 3 (23:32):
But can he play at an All Star level, can
he play at a Pro Bowl level? That's a million
dollar question when it comes to cam Ward and Tennessee.
The uncertainty between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson that puts
them in play. C J. Stroud is a bonafide superstar,
and you got a close ground on the Texans. But
in terms of elitpe frogging the two other teams in
the vision, that's a reasonable expectation for the Jacks as

(23:55):
you're heat into the season.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
All right, I'm gonna say that the La Charges are
an underrated team. I think Justin Herbert's gonna have a
breakout year. Why he goes to the coaching staff. I
think Harvard's going to get him going right now, and
this team is committed to the run game, so they're
going to run the football and Justin Herbert's going to
really improve with his efficiency under Harbus tutelage. Do you agree.

(24:17):
I think they're going to be really good right now.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
I mean, I think they'd be good. I don't know
if they're underrated, though. I think there are a lot
of people that are on that wagon simply because of
Jim Harbaugh and his ability to succeed anywhere. I think
this team has the defense that is capable of getting
them there. J Justman have done a great job zone
based defense. They keep the ball in front, they rarely
give up big plays, and they can get after it

(24:41):
when it comes to turning it over. Then, offensively, Greg
Roman wants to run the football. You have a Marion
Hampton second one, the first round pick that came over
from North Carolina, and Najia Harris is dealing with the
eye injury from the fireworks incident over fourth in July.
But the running game should be better. And then when
you think about the receivers, and even though Mike Williams

(25:03):
suddenly surprisingly retired, there still good enough on the perimeter
with Lab mccacky and a couple others to make things happen.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
Tell me about that rookie they drifted his wife receive
with Trey Harris. What do you know about him that
they have a lot of praise?

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Trey Ris from Old Miss is a strider,
long strider, big play guy, plays a lot faster than
people anticipate, and because he's so long with his stride,
he kind of glides past him on deep balls. Well,
for Justin Herbert. They haven't been able to get that
deep ball underway, and part of that was due to personnel.
Last year was really a lab mccacky only type passing game.

Speaker 4 (25:41):
Well, they should be able to expand it more.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
And if they're able to add the running game, which
is going to create one on one opportunities and the
vertical element, well, now they're able to dictate the terms
to the defense. Personnel wise, their better suitor to be
able to do that. But we'll see if it game's
not played on paper, we'll see if it becomes a fruition.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
All right. I don't think anybody's picking this team to
win the NFC West, but I got some good vibes
about the Arizona Cardinals. Now talk about the Cardinals, I
need to go to laugh. But they're looking for Their
first winning seasons is twenty twenty one and their second
winning seasons is twenty fifteen. But they got to get
Marvin Harrison on stride. They got to do that. They
got to get him delivered right now, because in year

(26:24):
one he was good, but it wasn't as good as
they thought he would be. I think, and that Kyler
Murray's got to be playing the football gameplay. I mean,
he's got to do everything fall into place, he's got
to get it done. We haven't heard a lot about
Kyler Murray right now as we did two years ago
that he was watching video games and things like that.
It looks like he's got his head on straight. So
if he could really connect with Marvin Harrison Junior, I

(26:45):
think this team could at least have a winning record.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
Look, I think that's a solid plan.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
This is a team that is very competitive, probably more
competitive than people thought. And like Jonathan Yannon's early part
of his coaching career, but he's got them playing hard.
They're playing well. But now it's about time to stack
it up against the marquee teams in the NFC. They
got some young talent that is emerging, but they got

(27:12):
to get the offense going. Marvin Harrison Junior has to
be a bigger factor. You got Treat McBride, which everyone loves,
and you have the quarterback in Calam Murray who's a
bit up and down, but when he's up man he
plays at a high high level. So you got to
mitigate the risk but really taking advantage of the opportunities
and if toa Carlinos can do that offensively with Caler Murray,

(27:34):
with some of the other weapons and firepower that they
have that man, that should be enough to close the
gap on the division.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
I think you're right. Here's a team that finished seven
to ten last year. I think they're going to turn
it around a little bit this year. I don't know
how much I'm talking about the Dallas Cowboys replacing Mike McCarthy.
I think that was a good move, I really do.
Brian Schottenheim is over there, but the key there is
Dak Prescott and a healthy Dok Prescott. And more than that,
you know they were doubling up and see thee Lamb's
receiver list year. They got George Pickens right now, if

(28:03):
he could keep his head on straight and stop taking
videos in the locker room and don't do anything that's
really crazy, I think this team could do well, at
least offensively. They got a tight end in Jake Ferguson.
I think the Dallas Cowboys could do okay, But Michael
Parsons sign the guy. Come on, Jerry sign Michael Parsons.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
Yeah, it takes two to tango, and Jerry wants to
get him on the Cowboys prices. Micah wants to get
him on his agent's terms, And the longer that the
players wait, the better it actually is for them. Because
about waiting, they've now had TJ. Wats deal come across
the plate, right, gotta be that that pushes us up

(28:44):
to a different stratosphere. Got to go make that kind
of money. So it has worked in the players favor,
even though the fans and stuff are antsy about his
play when he returns.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Okay, who's tighter with the buck? Jerry Jones and Mike
Brown with the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
M Mike Brown with the Bengals I mean, at least
Jerry Jones will eventually play pay guys. Mike Brown operates
like this the house, but the home his home budget.
Like he's not He's not sacrificing sweet treats to bring
in a player, and so Shamar Stewart and some of
those guys can sit on the side until they get
what they want. These are the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Though, let's talk about the Bengals. I think right now
I'm going to move to the other category. I think
they may be overrated. I really believe that because there's
internal problems. I mean, like a SHIMR. Stewart right now,
number one draft pick. This talk right now that he
may go back to Texas Tech and and make probably
even more money there than playing for the CINCERENTTI Bengals.
And I'm not I'm not down the kid for not

(29:44):
signing the deal. I understand what the deal is because
you know, if he does something wrong, they can hold
back the money. I get that. But you know you
got Trey Hendrickson. He hasn't signed yet. As you mentioned,
JJ Watt got big money. I don't think. I don't
think Trey Hendrickson's in the same league as JJ Watt,
TAJ what. But the point is this, I just think
that there's so much hype on the Jamar Chase T

(30:04):
Higgins and Joe Burrow in the defensive side of the ball.
I just don't see it happening. I just and I'm
watching that series Netflix the Quarterbacks. How many games they lost?
List did that? Seven games? Has scored thirty points or
more and they're losing games like that That shouldn't happen. Really, Yeah, and.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
You're talking about probably a week of defense going into
the season this year. If you're looking the paper in
just understand that the loss that Lou androumo is and
will be for this team. The Bengals are interesting because
they're in this spot where they committed to the offensive
firepower around Joe Burrow. Well to win, they're gonna have
to count on Joe Burrow and company to score three

(30:44):
times a game, which is why they're making the money
that they're making. But how do you control the game.
Because there's one thing to though it all over the yard.
It's another thing to be up seven points for five
minutes left and you don't want to give the opponent
the ball back. Do you have the capacity to run
it out? That's to mean no, of course.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
I always thought that when they got rid of lilule Anonumo,
the defensive coordinator, he was the scapegoat. Do you agree
to that? I mean, I can't believe he is if
a defensive coordinator and boom, as soon as he got fired,
he was picked up almost immediately by Indianapolis.

Speaker 3 (31:16):
Yeah, it did feel like he caught to blame unfairly
for a lot of the issues that are troubling and
plaguing the team. But I mean that this is the
business with Joe, so you have some of that.

Speaker 4 (31:33):
Show up is just.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
It's tough, man, because they really leg over a really good,
really good coach.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
I'm with you right there. I mean, we'll see what
happens with the Bengals, but I just I just know
the cloud that's hanging over them. But what happens if
Trey Hendrickson holds out? I mean he's going to play.
I can't believe he could be that foolish to turn
down the sixteen millis making right now. I mean, no
one in their right mind is going to do that.
But what kind of a cloud does that affect? Like
in the locker room. I mean, guys are talking about it,

(32:02):
and you say, you lose a game defensively, he's not playing.
You know what does that do to a team?

Speaker 3 (32:10):
It makes it And the reason why it makes it
tough is because the team wants to believe that everyone
is working the tail off to get it done, to
play at the championship level. And you're looking around and
you realize that ownership may not be in it the

(32:30):
same way that the players are, and that can be
tough for a team heading into the year to know that, man,
we're over here messing around, We're not committed to really
doing it, and when you're not committed, it shows up right.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Another team in that same division, I think that's somewhat
overrated right now. Got to be the Buffalo Bills. And
maybe you think I'm crazy because they got Joey Bosa
and they think he's going to help the pass rush.
They got him a free AI. But this guy's always injured.
But then he injured his CAF like back in May.
And he's going to come back, they say it training camp.

(33:06):
Who knows, you know, he's maybe past his prime. I
don't know. But I just don't see the Buffalo Bills,
you know, getting to that next level. Yeah, they win
a division, but I just don't see him. I don't
even see him making the super Bowl this year. I
just don't.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
Wow. So they had a lesser team last year. You
feel like they're gonna be out of the mix now.
Josh Allen is the deal. I'm actually optimistic.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
James Cook. They got to sign the running back.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
Though he's fine, he can come in. They can, you know,
take the cash. He doesn't have a choice. You have
to show up and do his deal. I understand why
they don't. You don't want to go crazy and overpay
a running back. I understand that they are a team
that is balanced. They have young, developing emerging talent. They
focus on developing the young players their homegrown operation primarily,

(33:56):
but they sprinkled in enough key veterans to help him.
Even though he's heard right now, Joey Bosa will help
them close out games. You think about Josh Palmer coming
over and what he can add to the offense to
help Khalil Shakur and Kean Coleman. This is a really
good team, man. They're much better thishear than they were
last year. And sometimes you know, you just look at

(34:21):
the pieces, it doesn't look like much, But when you
put the pieces of the postle together, man, it makes
a glorious a glorious masterpiece.

Speaker 2 (34:29):
I take you a word for it. I really do.
But maybe I'm just too much pro Cincinnati Bengals. I
want to see them do it.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
I mean, you are very at my home.

Speaker 5 (34:38):
It's not that Homer.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
It's not that I root for the team like Live
Will Die. I'm not one of those crazy fans. I
feel badly for Joe Burrow. I think he deserves better.
I think that he may very well be the best
quarterback in the National Football League and for him to
watch the playoffs like you and I do on TV,
it's a crime. It's a crime. Really, he should be
deep in the playoffs every year. He's tremendous, and he
does doesn't get any support. That's my problem there.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Uh yeah, I mean, look, they need more support form.
I get that, but look, he has to elevate the
squad too. It can't just be a man jober or
poor jobur or whatever. But like hey, man, to who
much is given, much is required. He has to elevate
his game. And we talked about quarterbacks coming in two categories,

(35:27):
trucks and trailers. Either they can carry the team or
the team carries him. He's a truck and they need
him to be a luxury liner to be able to
get this done.

Speaker 2 (35:36):
I hope he does, all right. He's Bucket Brooks, a
man deferman. This is Fox Sports Sunday of Fox Spitts Radio.
Mighty Mark has a question for Ask Bucky next.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live. Ask Bucket coming right up. But I love
a minute now before the top of the hour of
this is Fox Sports Sunthing and Fox Sports Ready. He's
Bucky Brooks and Andy Freman. You know what We're alive
from the Fox Sports radio studios, asked Bucky.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
Here and our guy, Mighty Mark Ramsey, the man who
gets us on the air, Bucky, he has a question
for you burning in his heart for the entire week.
He called me during the week to ask you this question.
So Mighty marct saw yours asked Bucky, what's on your mind?

Speaker 7 (36:24):
My basic thought, Bucky, was about coaches like Mike Tomlin
and Bill Belichick. For the past couple of weeks, it
seems as though we see them as good coaches, able
to get their teams to certain positions. But then if
they know now that people think Bill Belichick has lost
his mind because he has a girlfriend. And then Mike Tomlin,

(36:48):
he seems to have lost this like a different myth
about him that their players that they coach don't perform
in certain positions. So there's like this thin line that
they're a great coach, but then if they lose or
something happens out there a bum What do you think
about that basic question?

Speaker 3 (37:08):
I think what every great coach would say you. There's
never been a great coach who hasn't have great players.
And as much as we like to romanticize about coaches
and their tactics and strategies and those things, a coach
is only as good as his players when it comes
to competing at a championship level, where you can see
where a coach is good. If he can take average
talent and get them to a playoff level, get them

(37:29):
to advance in the division round. Are those things. But
to be a championship caliber team, you got to have
a great coach and great players. And what we're seeing
without those great players, they can't get their team to
that level.

Speaker 7 (37:44):
That I was saying too, That's what I was saying
to Andy, because Tomlin had his quarterback who retired, and
then Belichick had his quarterback and then he went away.
So we could see, like you just said, if you're
a great coach, but sometimes you need your players to
get the team across the line.

Speaker 3 (38:04):
Absolutely, this is always about the players. And if the
coaches are worth us aalt they will say that. They
will say, hey, man, it's a player's game. It's about
who we have. It's the Jimmy's and Joel's not quite
the exes, and.

Speaker 2 (38:18):
O's mighty Marky. You're satisfied now you got the answers
from the man for the main man.

Speaker 7 (38:23):
Yes, because, like you said, you know, you're the talk show,
you're the sportscaster, and we have our pro right here,
we have Bucky.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
You damn right about that. Right now, let's got a
little dumpster, the little dumps You got something for Buck?

Speaker 5 (38:38):
I do?

Speaker 8 (38:38):
I do, Bucky. It's a real quick one for you.
Do you think Nick Saban will return to coaching?

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Ooh, good one.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
I know people are talking about him returning to the pros,
but I just see him as such a great college coach.
I think the job that would intrigue him. And look,
I'm gonna say this, this guy's a friend of mine.
In terms of Brian Kelly at LSU. If that LSU
job open up, I could see Nick Saban sniffing around
and maybe being interested if they threw a way to
cash at him, which they would do. He is such

(39:09):
a fit in the college game. I don't know why
he would the a very attempt to go to the pros.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
All right, sounds great, we'll see that now. Buck, What
is the advantage if any, of joint practices over preseason
games for NFL teams.

Speaker 4 (39:23):
It's the best thing going. And the reason why it's
the best thing going.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
You get the intensity of dealing with another opponent because
there's nothing like competing against another team. But you get
the controlled environment to protect your best players, particularly your quarterback,
because when you're in practice, the quarterback is never lyve
whereas in the game you can't control your quarterback getting
hit or not. And when we think about how important

(39:47):
the quarterback is in central to being able to have
success in the regular season even postseason, you want to
get to the starting lot with your quarterback. Joint practices
allows you to get the benefit of a preseason game
without incurring some of the risks at quarterback have to take.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
Okay, this may be a hangover question because it's could
be a long answer, I think, but why are football
players concerned with salaries by positions? We don't see baseball
players compare positions for salaries, but football players we do.

Speaker 3 (40:14):
Because a lot of time ago, owners decided that quarterbacks
are the most important players on the field, so they
pay them significantly more than everybody else where. When it
started to do that. Then everyone wanted to figure out, well,
what are the market positions on the field. We want
to make sure we reward them for their value to
the team. So that's where it's escalated and kind of gone.

(40:36):
It started with quarterback, but it is kind of spawned
to other positions.

Speaker 2 (40:39):
Yeah, agents love it too, I'm sure because if this
guy is playing the middle linebacker, he's getting this and
my guys over here better stats. So that's what happens
over there. But we'll continue on that.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
All right.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
He's Bucket Brooks and Andy Firman and one NFL team
has a major problem on his hand. That and more
on Fox But Sunday next, or is age really well,
we'll tell you all about that and just about him minute.
Good morning, everybody. This is Fox Sports Sunday. He's Bucky
Brooks and Andy Furman and we're broadcasting live from the

(41:09):
Fox Sports Radio studios.

Speaker 5 (41:11):
And away we go.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
My partner, my friend, the man who lives for football,
rites for NFL dot Com. He's on TV and the
NFL network, he's all over the place. He coaches, and
he's on radio with us. But here he is Bucky Brooks.
How you doing buck.

Speaker 4 (41:26):
Man, I'm good. I can't complain Andy, what's happening on it?

Speaker 2 (41:29):
I got a couple of questions I want to clean
up from, asked Bucky. They're on my mind? Can I
can I throw them at you right now if I may.
I know your daddy was a coach, and I think
you played for your dad, didn't you?

Speaker 4 (41:41):
Okay, I did not think my dad, but he was
a coach for a long time.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Well, what kind of a pressure? What kind of pressure
does an aspiring athlete like yourself for anybody else? I
have his older brother or sister or dad or mom
played pro sports? Right, what kind of pressure? I mean,
you got some kids. Is there pressure on them because
you played in the pros?

Speaker 3 (42:01):
I think so, But I think it depends on how
the dad navigates it. With my kids and my son
in particularly, I told him that his name is his
name and he needed to blaze his own path. He
elected not to play football. He's a baseball player, and
so it was a little easier because you don't have
that same sport pressure where they look at the son

(42:22):
and expect them to be the dad. But I never
realized how much he may have felt the weight or
the burden of having like Brooks on his back, but
there's some pressure that goes along with it, But that's it.
I believe that there's a toughness that a former athlete's
son can develop because they know when they walk in
the gym or on the diamond or on the football field,

(42:45):
everyone knows who they are. They're the son of X.
And if they have the dog in them to handle
all the slings and arrows that comes with that, it
sets them apart from others.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
All right, I hear that. And now we just saw
twenty year old girl, a soccer player, signed for one
point three million dollars. Now are we going to now
see athletes playing the sport for the cash, well for
the sport that they truly love. If you're growing up,
you're a high school kid, junior high school kid, and
you're seeing there's more money maybe in baseball than in basketball,

(43:18):
you're gonna probably kind of zoom into that baseball lane
because you want to go for the money. Is that
the way it's going to be?

Speaker 3 (43:25):
You would think that it has been like that, But
if that was the case, there will been a lot
more kids that have decided to play baseball and soccer
given the money and the type of money that they
can make. Soccer money overseas is ridiculous, you know, if
you play in those premier leagues and those things like
the cash is I mean, it's significant, but that hasn't
led to a rush of top athletes moving over to

(43:48):
the sport. Same thing can be said for baseball. What
you have is you have things that are hindrances from
some of the best athletes being able to participate. The money,
the costs to play baseball and soccer and being on
club teams. Volleyball is another one that is expensive. The
money prevents you at a young age from being able

(44:10):
to do it. And then I'll say this, there's a
daddy ball factor in all of these sports that also
exists that when you're at the lower levels.

Speaker 4 (44:18):
The lower stage is youth ball. Dads who are.

Speaker 3 (44:21):
Coaches put their sons in the most prominent positions even
though their sons may not be best suited for that
based on skill level. That can be discouraging and that
can run some of the players out of the sport
before you even really get a chance to truly see
and assess where the most talented guys are. So there
are a few different factors that impact it and make

(44:43):
it where some of those other sports guys aren't necessarily
going for them because they're discouraged at the early age.

Speaker 2 (44:50):
I hear you. Okay, now this is run into your
wheelhouse right now. The NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell,
he resigned Thursday, I think Thursday night, a two year
tenure leader of the union. He succeeded De Maurie Smith
as the head of the union, which represents obviously about
two thousand pro football players. He was head of the
union from nine to twenty three before Smith, who was

(45:13):
Gen Up Show. I thought Gen Up Show did a
great job when he was there. But this guy was
a bit of a low life crete and creep. I mean,
I don't know what he did, but they allegedly said
he was going to strip clubs in La or in
Miami as well, and also say he was involved in
collusion basically investing with people who want to purchase an

(45:35):
NFL team, which tells me he's on the side of
the owners because he wants to be an owner and
he's supposed to be represented the players. What do you
know about this guy? Lloyd howell, what's happening here?

Speaker 3 (45:47):
What I can to you what was happening is not
good when it comes to no knock about people that
go to strip clubs or enjoy adult in the same
into those things. But what you can do is you
can't use company fun to pay for those things.

Speaker 4 (46:02):
And that is where he got.

Speaker 3 (46:03):
Jammed up reportedly when it came to it visits to
Magic City, visits to other adult establishments while uh kind
of writing it off to get reimbursed from the thing,
you can't do that.

Speaker 4 (46:14):
If you do it, you got to do it on
your own dime and those things.

Speaker 3 (46:17):
So that's part of it and what it did it
led to a bigger investigation that ultimately forced him to resign.
Is look, man, it's crazy. And now, from an ownership standpoint,
I mean a union leadership standpoint, the players have to
figure out who is the right type leader to represent them.
The thing about union bosses when it comes to sports,

(46:39):
the best union bosses are not necessarily the best of friends.
With ownership, it should be a bit of a tense,
contentious relationship because it's a negotiation. You're always willing to
fight for the best interests of the players and even
though Gene Upshaw and Paul Tagbybo who had a very

(47:00):
respectful relationships, some would say that Jen would go toe
to toe and make sure that he would fight for
the players. It has to be like that. We've seen
in baseball Marvin Miller when he was the union ball
like he was not afraid to challenge ownership, to go
back and forth. And that means by any means necessary
work stoppages or whatever to ensure that your players get

(47:22):
the best deal.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
That's what it is.

Speaker 3 (47:25):
And if you have a pushover when it comes to
union leadership, the players don't get the best deals. And
every player should want the best deal for them during
their career and after their career, no doubt about that.

Speaker 2 (47:38):
And this guy, Howel was reported that he was a
paid part time consultant for the Carlisle Group, one of
the league approved private equity firms seeking ownership and NFL teams.
It's unbelievable he wants to be part of a part
owner of a team at the same time representing the players.
Doesn't make any sense. He's out and he should have
been out.

Speaker 3 (48:00):
Without knowing all the particulars. Yeah, it didn't sound like
it was great when it comes to the answers of
the players and give them credit for it. They made
the move swiftly to start the process, and then he
resigned before he could do it. But now it puts
them in another precarious situation because they have to figure

(48:20):
out who's going to be the next leader and the
seasons about to be underway. They are things that leadership
does throughout the course of the season to ensure that
the players are taken care of.

Speaker 4 (48:31):
It's not ideal for.

Speaker 3 (48:32):
Things to go down like that, but they have to
adapt and adjusts and figure out who should be the
next union leader.

Speaker 4 (48:38):
But I did see some of the names.

Speaker 3 (48:39):
J C.

Speaker 4 (48:39):
Tretder is involved.

Speaker 3 (48:41):
He's been a big part, a big has had a
big role in it. But in a collusion case his
name came up for some disparaging remarks as relates to
Russell Wilson Disney to pause and reset and just make sure,
like when you're in a leadership position, the people in
those positions represent the brand the way that it needs

(49:01):
to be represented.

Speaker 2 (49:03):
Okay, let me bring this down to the average Joe.
All right, you know we talk sports. You go to
a bar and talk a couple of guys having a
couple of beers talk about sports. I don't think this
is a top of mind conversation about Lloyd Howell about
the NFLPA, because I think the average Joe is saying
no Union. I mean, these guys are making a million,
you know, Joe Burrow's baking fifty six million dollars. So basically,

(49:26):
what could a union head do to make things better
for the players? I mean, to me, the average Joe
sitting at a bar right now, say, hey, these guys
got it pretty damn good. Did their average lifespan for
players like three point two years, and the money they
make in those three years is more than any individual
on the street can make in a lifetime. So what

(49:48):
could a union head do to make life better? What's
the big deal?

Speaker 4 (49:52):
What the big deal is?

Speaker 3 (49:53):
Everyone always looks at the people at the top, right,
So the stars in our league will always be taken
care of, right when you think about Pat Mahomes and
Josh Allen and Lamar Jacks. The quarterbacks will always get
taken care of. But what the Union's job is is
to protect every player. And so it's not just the
quarterbacks and the stuperstars, but it's the guys that live

(50:15):
their life on the bubble. It's to make sure that
if you're on the bubble, if you are i'll say this,
a minimum wage worker in the league, that after your
time of service, you lead the league better and protected,
whether that's healthcare, dental, pension, benefits, all of those things

(50:35):
you want to have.

Speaker 4 (50:36):
And I'll say this, like, there's some things that.

Speaker 3 (50:38):
The league does that are terrific for the players, like
unprecedented types of stuff like the four and one K
plan where they match three to one owners put in
three to every one that the player puts in, so
reasonably when you walk away, you have a great head
start in life. The severance package and all of those

(50:58):
other things, but it's still things that can be done.
The one thing that every former player will fight on
and will tell you this is long term health care,
like walking away with insurance for life.

Speaker 4 (51:10):
Because of the sacrifices that.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
You make for your body, you want to make sure
that you're protected and ensured when those things, the bills
come due on when your body falls apart, that you're
able to handle that. So that's where some of the
fight comes from. Everybody wants like an increase pension in
those things. But it's more the long term healthcare. How
do you take care of the players when you talk

(51:31):
on one end one of the player, the health and
safety of the players. Cool, let's see that same kind
of vigor and enthusiasm when the players are a former players,
they're older in life and now these health issues pop up. Hey,
let's say you take care of them because it was
so important for you as they were playing. Let's make
sure it's still a priority when they're not playing for you.

Speaker 2 (51:52):
So now you've opened my eyes. Sis, Now I understand
how important this is. And more importantly, you would think
that you'd want to have a former player maybe to
get that position because he knows more than others.

Speaker 3 (52:01):
Right. That used to be a big thing, Like obviously
you talk about Gene Upshaw, like a former player being
able to do it, and some of the other guys
that ranked high. That always used to be a thing,
and it became a little contentious with the Morris Smith
and d Smith did a good job for some things,
but he was an outside when it came to being
good player. He wasn't a player, And so there was

(52:22):
this thing where you're like, eh, he's not a player
because you're so used to having a former player installed
in that role.

Speaker 4 (52:31):
Now that former player.

Speaker 3 (52:32):
In that role, he has to have the experience and
gravitized to be able to handle all that comes with that,
and he has to have a great team that may
not be former players, but a great team to help
him navigate some of the duties of the responsibility.

Speaker 2 (52:47):
I think you'd be good at that. I really do.

Speaker 3 (52:49):
No, no, no, no, no, no part no never never in that.
Like I mean, I fully support all players, former players
in those things, but that that's not my path. My
path is not to be a union head and the
negotiat and do all that. Now. I'm good on this.
I'm good on my side over here, because I would
have to forego some of the Sunday stuff that we do.

Speaker 4 (53:08):
Andy, I can't do it as too much.

Speaker 2 (53:10):
Oh hell no, don't do important to No, no, no,
don't do it. I don't want to lose you. I
don't want to lose you. All Right, we talk about
money now, we talk about NFL players. There are players
right now that are unsigned, and most of the reason
being is money, right, That's what it's all about. And
some of it is length of contract, and some may
be maybe age. We talked about age, is it a problem.
Let's start with the man who won seventeen and a

(53:31):
half sacks last year, Troy Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals.
He wants three years, three year deal with Cincinnati, but
he's gonna be thirty one this year. Yet I'd have
to say he's been relatively healthy throughout his career. Do
you sign the man because he's thirty one years of age,
but the fact is that he's been pretty healthy and
he's been pretty productive. What do you do?

Speaker 3 (53:53):
I think look his length of contract and making sure
that the money doesn't that you don't overpay for what
you're getting. Right, you talk about him being over thirty
years old and linked the deal. You want to make
sure that the deal ages appropriately. The challenge that you
have is Trey Hendrickson is one of the more productive
pass rushers that we've seen in our league. TJ. Watt

(54:16):
just gets that deal that pushes him over the forty
million dollars mark. Now you're the Cincinnati Bengals. Because you've
kept dragging your feet, the price tag keeps going up.
They have to make a hard decision and they have
Trey Hendrickson in a jam. Because he can't hold out
because it's so cost prohibitive. But I understand Trey Hendrickson

(54:36):
standing firm, like no, no, no, You're gonna pay me what
I deserve based on the market, and the market says
I should be at a certain level. The Bengals have
to make a tough decision because right now they got
one pass rusher, Schamar Stewart holding out because of language
and the contract, and they have their top pass rusher
right now disc gruner and unhappy and likely to hold
out for defense.

Speaker 4 (54:57):
That was terrible.

Speaker 5 (54:58):
I mean, they got to figure this out now now.

Speaker 2 (55:01):
Is that Trey Hendrickson talking or is that his agent talking?
Was agent telling me to say that?

Speaker 3 (55:06):
Nah? Either way, I think it is. I think it's him,
Like the player wants to get paid and he's tried
for two years to get paid.

Speaker 2 (55:15):
You know, he says he's gonna sit I don't believe it.
Do you believe it? I don't think you're gonna be
crazy to shit out and lose that money?

Speaker 3 (55:23):
Right, Yeah, there's too much money to sit out.

Speaker 2 (55:26):
He won'ts it too much. Okay, Now the question I
have I remember last year Jamar Chase had a situation
like that. But he would show up at the workouts
at practice on the sidelines, but he didn't practice. Now,
I understand you get fined per day, but if you
show up in uniform on the sidelines and not practice,
you don't get fined. Is that the deal?

Speaker 3 (55:45):
Some scenes would let people get away with that, But technically,
if you're on management side, yeah, that doesn't work. The
rules in the CBA are look clear. If it's a holdout,
you pay significant sums of money. There's no such thing
as a quote hold in, which is what we saw
some people doing. They're playing nice with the payers, not
finding them for being there, but them not participating.

Speaker 4 (56:08):
Depends on how you want to hold it.

Speaker 3 (56:10):
If your ownership, it may either you hear you're not
but you're not going to hold in. We're not doing that.

Speaker 2 (56:16):
I understand. Okay, So the media right now and they're
going crazy, they're calling it. I hate the word distraction. Really,
you know what distraction is. I'm sitting outside and the
mosquito comes over to me. That's a distraction. That's my distraction. Okay,
But do teammates really give it dan? Do they care?
Maybe some on the defensive side of the football, but
does Jamar Chase really give a dan that Trey Hendricks

(56:38):
is not gonna sign? Really? In it's heart of hearts,
he said, well, I'm gonna go out there and bust
my butt. I'm gonna play. Joe's gonna throw me the ball,
and that's it. If Trey comes, great, If he doesn't come,
still gotta play. I mean, he's not gonna lose sleep
over it. I don't think so. Have you been involved
with that when you play that a player, a main player,
as kind of a star player, is holding out that

(56:59):
you really, really.

Speaker 3 (57:02):
There's an unwritten rule in the locker room. You don't
pocket watch. You don't sit here and worry about what
other people are making. Their business is their business, and
we know when we're on a team, when you have
fifty three guys on a team, there's fifty three independent contractors,
and you have to do what's best for you as
the CEO of your own personal company. And we support

(57:23):
everybody in that. So when it comes to money and
contracts and what you have to do with the deal,
no one will ever say a word. You have to
do what's in the best interest of you and your family. However,
once you get here, then it goes back to being
a part of the team and how do you fit in,
how do you blend in with the team. But the
money part of it, now, the money part you handle independently.

(57:45):
The performance and the production, that's part of the team thing.
That's how you have to get down because you owe
that to us as your teammates. The money you got
to get on your own.

Speaker 2 (57:55):
So Trey Hendrickson's on an island right now. As soon
as he signs his contract to go out to dinner
to there's a team. They'll party.

Speaker 4 (58:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (58:02):
I mean the team won't say anything. They don't they
don't care about that. They understand what he's doing. They
understand what he is fighting for individually, and when he
comes back, he'll be welcome with open arms to the team.

Speaker 2 (58:12):
You know. It's funny because I want to kind of
relate that to like our business and like, you know,
we kind of have like a team here at Fox
Sports Radio, and I worked at local radio in Cincinnati
as well.

Speaker 3 (58:21):
You know.

Speaker 2 (58:21):
But when a guy gets fired, and that happens often
in radio, there's no doubt about it. That's the way
it is. I never understood why the rest of his
staff wouldn't in his support just strike and not show up.
You know, you love the guy, he's part of your team.
But one day they say, you know gone, you're out
of here. You know, I wouldn't understand why the rest

(58:42):
of the station would go dark and everybody else just
walked the street and say we want him back. It
never happens. You know. They talk about team, but you
know when one guy bites the bullet, they just keep
on going like nothing happened. I see it all the time.

Speaker 3 (58:56):
Yeah, it's a different thing, and it's a different mindset
in here. People in general are selfish, and as much
as we may pass on the I love yous to
one another or whatever, it's rare that you find someone
who really really cares about you beyond surface level in
those moments. And for players, and I think that's why

(59:17):
it's really hard in team sports. And you and I
can be on the same team for ten years and
if you're cut, if I'm cut or traded away, we
may never speak again, you know, and you think that
we have this bond.

Speaker 4 (59:31):
Or this whatever.

Speaker 3 (59:32):
But it's one of those things that people talk about
players struggling after their career is because those bonds those teammates,
those friendships are fleeting. They're not real all the time,
and that can be hard when you go through something
that is hard or challenging that you don't hear from
your teammates, guys that blesswood and tears, and so it

(59:56):
puts you in this rub where you believe in these ideals,
but these ideals are not real. They're not acted out
all right, So it's a rub. And even in real life,
people don't do that. We say we care about each other,
but we our actions don't show it, so we don't
live it out like we say that we preach. That's

(01:00:16):
a challenging thing, that's hard, it's hard to overcome.

Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
You know, you're exactly right. I mean, I heard the
story the other day when Stephen Colbert is going to
be gone. CBS is getting rid of him in the
Late night show and you know, everybody was booing in
the audience whatever it may be. But why didn't the
entire staffs say if he doesn't come back, we're not
going to be here. You know, people they love him
and they watch him. But the point is that life
goes on, and Stephen Colbert is going to be gone

(01:00:40):
after next May but I understand why the band wouldn't
walk off the stage, and all of us producers, directors, writers,
whatever it may be, just say, look, you know this
is the top credit show in the nighttime. I mean,
what are you doing. We're not coming back at all
unless he comes back. They ain't gonna have They're not
doing it. Like you say, they love him, but when
push comes to shove, they don't love them that much.

Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
Yeah, Because then what you have to do is are
you willing to make the personal sacrifice? Because that's what
you're asking them to do, the personal sacrifice. Am I
willing to put my own job in jeopardy by not
showing up for Stephen Colbert? And then some will say, well,
Steven Corbert makes sixty million dollars, I don't make that.
I don't have the luxury of being able to walk

(01:01:22):
off and get fired because I have a family to
do whatever. So you have a lot of different agendas
and things that are at play, and in general, here's
what I would say when it comes to that, and
we'll use Pat McAfee as an example. Pat McAfee reportedly
got win that ESPN needed to cut make some cuts,
and so they need to cut some of his production
team and staff, and he was like, no, no, no, I'll

(01:01:43):
pay out of my own pocket to make sure that
my people are around.

Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
Typically, what has to happen.

Speaker 3 (01:01:49):
Those who have the most should make the bigger sacrifice
for those who make the least, if you really believe
in the team. Because if I believe in the team,
and I know that all these people prop me up
as the star, well I need my team to be
around so that I could look good. So I may
take less so they can have more. But as a team,

(01:02:10):
we can still operate at a high level. So when
we talk about sacrificing those things, how many people are
really willing to do that? How many people that make
the most are really willing to sacrifice to help those
who make the least have a better life. Most people
say that, oh, I would do that, but most people
their actions don't mash their words.

Speaker 2 (01:02:30):

and we are here live From The Fox sports. RADIO
studios i want to talk about that. Age factor we
Talked About trey, hendrickson before but now there's another factor
coming up as far as age. Is concerned and Should
The washington Commanders pay terry McLaurin the top ten wide

(01:03:57):
receiver money as he approaches to receive wall and the
receiver wall is age thirty and he's coming off a great.
Career year what are they? Gonna do what Is the
Washington command they got to, do it and they, gotta
sign don't. YOU think i mean they gotta sign this
guy because they finally have a quarterback to throw in. The, football.

Speaker 3 (01:04:16):
Yeah they. GOT to i mean they gotta. Sign Him
and terry's been the embodiment of what you want in
terms of a representative of, the franchise high, level player,
good teammate, great workers shows up in.

Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
The clutch it's time to.

Speaker 3 (01:04:29):
Pay HIM and i understand how much the money has
grown at wide receiver in the thirty million, dollar range.

Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
But this dude has.

Speaker 3 (01:04:37):
Been terrific he's been terrific with a number of guys playing.
THE position i think it's a matter of time before
they get. It done they want to get it done
obviously in the immediate because training camp is on. The
horizon but he deserves to, be paid if anybody on
that roster deserves to. Be paid terrymywallan deserves to be
paid based on how he's performed and how.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
He acts and let's look at his stats, last year
eighty two cash is, one thy ninety, six yards thirteen.
Touchdown catches now here's the key, right Now if i'm,
his Agent if i'm, his agent, RIGHT Now t higgins
set the standard for a number. Two receiver he's a number.
TWO Receiver t higgins is getting twenty eight point. A
mil so you got to believe that mclaurin's got to

(01:05:16):
get at least at least twenty, eight Mil right BECAUSE
if t higgins is getting twenty eight for a, number
two mclaurin's are. Number one so they go. RIGHT there,
i mean it's kind of easy to figure this. ONE out.

Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
I mean it. Should be, you, know obviously there's an
agent controlling, the negotiations and you're trying to get to a,
desired number and sometimes it has to be a little
bumpy before you. Get there but it, can HAPPEN and
i think eventually he'll, get signed he'll get, his money
and everything will, be.

Speaker 8 (01:05:46):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:05:47):
RIGHT yeah, i mean have you been on a team
where a player's salary went public and there. WAS negotiations,
I mean i've always believed that.

Speaker 5 (01:05:57):
These should be.

Speaker 2 (01:05:57):
KEPT private, i mean we don't know the CEOs of various.
Corporations make we don't know what the salaries of our
coworkers Here At Fox. Butt radio why should we have
to know what football. Players make you go to a,
baseball game guy strikes out and he's sitting next to
a guy in. The stands bob is making fifty million
dollars a gain in THE baseball i don't think. IT'S
right i think it's. IT'S privacy, I Mean joe burrow

(01:06:21):
was talking about privacy On his netflix deal. On quarterbacks,
You know joe talk about the privacy of. Your contract
the heck with, your life talk about privacy. And, CONTRACTS.

Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
Yeah i mean sports are weird because it's such a
public thing when we don't know what the top, executives
are top, delivery drivers make at Ups or amazon.

Speaker 2 (01:06:42):
Or any of.

Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
Those things but it's the nature of the thing it is,
a way in a, weird way is a way of
owners and that they control because they always know that
fans side with the billionaires instead of. The millionaires and
it's a, weird phenomenon but most fans will always sign

(01:07:04):
with ownership opposed to. The players and so by putting
those salaries, out there you give a real number to
fans who some don't make nearly as much obviously, as
players and so they, can create they can play upon
those emotions and feeling some kind of way for players
playing a game but making eight ten times what they

(01:07:27):
may make in a. Hard job it's all part of.
That cycle and so fans identify for some reason with
billionaires as opposed to.

Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
The millionaires but they were dead defined with the players
last night IN The Wnba All star Game. In indianapolis
they were they were chanting in the stands because the
players are wearing those shirts to, pay us and the
fans were screaming the same thing in. The stands so
they were relating last night to, the, PLAYERS right, I.

Speaker 3 (01:07:54):
Mean i mean that is that, Is TRUE but i
would say maybe different fan base when it comes. To,
it right let's JUST say wnba, fan BASE maybe wnba
fan base is. More women maybe the fan base is,
more minority and so maybe they identified with the struggles

(01:08:15):
when it comes to trying TO get i, don't know
equitable pay in, those things a lot of it without
having like statistics in the hardcore research in front, Of
me like that's, a guestimate but that might be why
you have some of, those things whereas in, other leagues
like the demographics are different amongst, the fans which is
why they may feel a certain type of way about
the players and the amount of money and, those things

(01:08:36):
and why they may identify with ownership as opposed to the.

Speaker 2 (01:08:40):
Labor force, all right last Thing about. TORY McLaurin i
mean last year he was his seventeenth highest paid wide out. Twenty,
year well that's kind. Of strange. It's seventeenth that's he. Deserves,
better yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
It's. Low, Low, WOW yeah i mean that's low because
the number. Has changed and that's why the thirty million.
Dollar mark we have to remember things changed quickly in,
this league and it hasn't been that. Long Ago When
jimmy garoppolo got his deal after six or seven games With,
the niners it might have been twenty seven million per

(01:09:16):
and quarterback money was like the top of the market
was thirty. Million dollars we narrow at the point where
fifty million dollars is kind of standard for a, good
quarterback so the money had to jump up for. Wide
receivers wide receivers are now in the old quarterback, money
market which is thirty, million Dollars and terry McLaurin at

(01:09:37):
twenty TWO is i won't say, grossly UNDERPAID but i
can see where he views himself as.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Being undervalued, All RIGHT but i will, say this if
You're the washington commander's his. Their argument but it's been
a Lot More pro bowl caliber wide receivers hit that
hit the wall when they come thirty years. Of age
and we look at Guys Like, Cooper Cup, DeAndre Hopkins,
Marik Cooper, Keenan Allen, Stefan, digg yes and, if struggle they.
Were HURTLESS but i think you're going to get hurt

(01:10:04):
more easily when you're thirty or above than when. You're
Younger maybe i'm wrong, on THAT but i think it's
true you've become. More vulnerable and the more games, you
play the older, you are the. More brittle maybe you
become maybe that's. The, deal.

Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
Look there's something. To, it now there's something to that
part of. You know thirty is the, magic number and
when we, are negotiation we. NEGOTIATION negotiation i appreciate what
you did in, the Past but i'm paying you for.
Your future and in, the future if you're thirty, years
old your better days are likely. Behind YOU so i

(01:10:38):
have to make sure that the DEAL that i do
anticipates that and doesn't leave me holding the Bag when
i'm paying someone significantly more than what they're worth based
on what they're producing on. The field got?

Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
You there, YOU know i mentioned, about entertainment, you know
and it's. Sports entertainment, of course. It's entertainment winning, is
great but it could be boring TO and i use
that ugly word boring as opposed to maybe comparing it
TO THE Nba Wnba All star game. LAST night i
hate to use that word in SPORTS because i think
that it really can't. Be boring but it wasn't as
EXCITING as i expected it. To be, big less maybe lack.

(01:11:15):
Of defense, but again you explained it. To me these kids,
don't plug they. Don't care it's a. Meaningless game, you
know more often, than not they'd rather have the. NIGHT
off i would think they didn't even go to. That game,
WHO knows i, Don't know but it's, about entertainment and for,
THE entertainment i think you need, a star and more,
than that you. Need wins but sometimes this star will
get you. Those wins and there's a list out there

(01:11:36):
that have the most entertaining teams IN the nfl, this
year and, your Team The, jacksonville jaguars is. Up there
i'm not going to throw out NUMBERS because i think
it's ridiculous to say what team is what number, entertainment
WISE but I think jacksonville's going to be one of
the more entertaining teams, this year partly because of the,
New Coach. LIAM cohen i think that this guy's gonna get.
It done but more, THAN that i think he's going

(01:11:57):
To Get trevor. Lawrence going and they got THE super
i call him a superstar, Right Now Brian, thomas junior
and everybody's gonna have their Eyes On. Travis hunter So
the jacksonville jack was all going to be, someone entertaining don't.

Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
YOU agree i, do Believe and i'm all in on
believing in the head coach and the general manager in
terms of what, THEY do a lot of their a
lot of what they'll do is influenced by their time
With The. La rams and if you think About The
la rams and the culture that they've had And how
sean McVay and lists need have been so successful and

(01:12:29):
keeping that team relevant and keeping that team in titled
contention amidst turnover and. THOSE things i love that and
haven't had a chance to be around those guys and
watch those, guys Closely like i'm, all IN and i
do believe that this team has the ability to outplay
the expectations. AROUND him a lot of it hinges on, the,

(01:12:51):
Quarterback Though trevor lawrence has to play. Really well if he,
plays well then the team is going to. Play well we've.
Seen that that's the part of pretty much every. Team
story if the quarterback, plays well the team. Plays well
and that is cool True, in, Jacksonville.

Speaker 2 (01:13:06):
RIGHT and i think here's a team where the quarterbacks
could to play well because of the receiver. He's got
and the receiver his Name Is. Devonte adams i'm Talking About.
MATTHEW stafford i Think The la rams will be very entertaining,
this YEAR and i think they'll be. Very, COMPETITIVE.

Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
Yeah, i, look, MAN look i think teams are going
to be competitive in general because the league is built
for it to. Be competitive the tallent disparity is not
as great in. This league so it comes down to
having your stars have to play at a, star level
but then your role players have to. Exceed.

Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Expectations right i'm looking at this list and you take,
a guess which team do you think they name? Number
one the most entertaining team In The National football league?

Speaker 3 (01:13:46):
This year most? Entertaining, team, yes oh.

Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
Which is a stupid, Category, ANYWAY seriously i don't know what.
THAT means i don't think if you're containing think if.

Speaker 4 (01:13:58):
You, WIN yeah i think there's some.

Speaker 3 (01:14:00):
ENTERTAINMENT value i would Say maybe baltimore could be.

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
An, it, bingo bingo you. Got It The baltimore ravens
that say the most entertaining team In The National. Football,
League REALLY and i Guess Because, lamar jackson the way
he plays, the game the way, he runs the way,
HE passes, i mean just the way. It is But And,
derek henry, you know they got superstars and they got
guys THAT really i think you want to watch, them play,
You know it's kind of like must see football if.

(01:14:26):
You will you want to see that. Team play there,
you go and number two Is The. Buffalo bills how
do you?

Speaker 3 (01:14:32):
LIKE that i? Like, That good i'm good.

Speaker 8 (01:14:34):
With that?

Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
All right how do you?

Speaker 3 (01:14:36):

Speaker 5 (01:15:15):

Say nay this guy is like a freak. Of nature
he'll play at least two. More. YEARS really i don't
play For the lakers. As, WELL.

Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
Yeah i don't think the retirement tour. IS coming i
don't know if he's gonna finish his career With, the
LAKERS but i don't think it's going to be a
farewell to it.

Speaker 1 (01:15:58):
This, year.

Speaker 5 (01:16:02):
Well we got FROM, The nba we're gonna go to THE.

Speaker 8 (01:16:05):
W NBA So Wnba All star game included a four
point shot deep from The logo deep from.

Speaker 5 (01:16:11):
The logo yay or nay, On This. BUCKY brooks i.

Speaker 4 (01:16:15):
LIKE it, i mean it's the.

Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
We've seen the league crow in terms of. The Range
steph curry kind of brought this to. The mainstream, So
yeah i'm okay with a four, point shot?

Speaker 2 (01:16:25):
WHY not i, like IT but i only want to
see it In The All. STAR game i don't want
to see it during the SEASON because i saw what
they were doing. Last night they were just. Heaving it
they'll come down to the court. AND heaving i mean
it's interesting because just. Something different but For The All,
star game, It's OKAY but i maybe do it for
like when they have those little games prior To The All,
star game like the Three, point contest, you know have

(01:16:47):
a four point, contest whatever but more.

Speaker 8 (01:16:49):
Regular, season well speaking Of The All, star, game guys
we GOT The Mlb All star game and it actually
had a swing off yay or nay On this furman.

Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Nay big time because it's not. A carnival, you know
It's Not Home run derby like that show they used
to BE. On tv it's it's, a game. All right
and if you look at the stats and when history could,
repeat itself when you look at the historians and used,
to come they're gonna look At The All star game
with twenty, twenty five say who's the Winning, piccher hope
we don't know who's the. Losing picture we don't have
one because it was. A carnival it wasn't, a GAME

(01:17:22):
and i don't. Like it don't. Do it they said
they're not going to, Do it thank goodness in the.
Regular season play, the game. Continue playing you know what,
They did they know what? Pictures left play.

Speaker 3 (01:17:32):
The game I'M not I understand andy's. EMOTION dosings i actually.
LIKE it i thought it's a. Good idea quickens the.
Game play it allows us to get out of there
in a quick, time block and much like PK's and soccer,
penalty kicks is a very. Exciting thing, so yeah. Swing
off i'm all, for IT and i would like to
see it in. Regular seasons, i'm good, My.

Speaker 5 (01:17:53):
Goodness wow talk about expansion the only reason they, did
it but they know what.

Speaker 2 (01:17:58):
Pictures left they ran out of.

Speaker 8 (01:18:00):
The. Pictures well speaking, of, expansion GUYS The Nba Commissioner
adam silver is. Contemplating expansion yay or nay on, This One, Bucky.

Speaker 3 (01:18:13):
Brooks, yes, Yes YES and i think the first city
that needs to expand to is we Need A seattle
soonics to. Come Back The seattle sonics have to. Come
back we need to give them what. They wanted they
had to watch their former franchise win a title last YEAR.
With okc Give the sonics back To the.

Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
Seattle fans i'm, with you Because The seattle sonics was
stolen and they Went To. Oklahoma city it was under
the table movement and any time you could get people,
more jobs more, coaching jobs front, office, jobs players because.
MORE jobs i. Love it i'm. For it now you Talk,
About seattle i'd like To, See louisville kentucky get. A

(01:18:52):
franchise I think louisville's a hotbed. For basketball there's no.
Professional Competition the University of louisville will be. Some competition other,
THAN that I think louisville will be A tremendous. Nba
city other, THAN that i don't know world's. Bucket worlds
could They go Seattle in louisville where On the west
we're only?

Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
SOMEBODY else, I mean i feel like you're being a
homer right Now because louisville is not that Far, From
cincinnati so you might as well to just Sit The
cincinnati royals place. To, Play yeah so if we're gonna bring,
back conformacity How About. SAINT louis i Feel Like saint
louis is being we got a. LITTLE dumper i think
feel like they've been. Dumped on when it comes to.

(01:19:28):
Pro sports we Have the cardinals, in baseball but their football.
Team left the basketball team. Has left let's go back and.
Bring him bring the basketball team Back To saint louis
and assist In the midwest in Middle. Of america we
don't have enough.

Speaker 2 (01:19:40):
Basketball teams you may be, Right THERE but i tell
You What saint louis.

Speaker 4 (01:19:43):
TO me i mean the.

Speaker 2 (01:19:44):
Football team didn't they have two teams there that that
folded IN the Nfl To saint. LOUIS teams, i MEAN
because i Think The chicago cardinals Moved To saint louis.
ONE time i, don't know but still IN all i
just does something wrong with. That city it's just baseball
craz and. That's it.

Speaker 3 (01:20:02):
Hockey team is There To blues blue seems to be. Doing,
Okay yeah and.

Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
There's really no college teams there to, speak of Right
The Saint, louis university but, you know not major?

Speaker 5 (01:20:13):
All right, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
Little dump final.

Speaker 8 (01:20:15):
One HERE So Sec Commissioner greg sankey said the league
should adopt nine game. Conference schedules yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:20:22):
Your nay, On, This, andy yes.

Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
THEY should i get those those fleebag schools off. THEIR schedules,
i mean, come on like those directional schools IN. The
sec it's. A joke it's a joke and Laid. Out
toobin it's not playing those. Directional schools and you, Know,
that buck. IT'S true.

Speaker 3 (01:20:41):
I, MEAN yeah I mean i, feel you but not
nine games is tough IN the sec because it's not
fair for. Everybody else it needs to be a level.

Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
Playing filolo breakout Time Next Fox. Sports sunday stick, with us,

Speaker 3 (01:21:20):

so i'm paying close attention to, training camps seeing what's,
going on who's going in. AND out i am readying
my mind FOR the. Nfl season so, this camps you don't,
have ball Don't, Reported yeah ricky's ever poured it. All

(01:21:42):
over so there's a little there's a lot, going on lots.

Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
Lots lots tomorrow's a. Big day Tomorrow's the bengals have
their big, Media Luncheon so I'll be i'll be over.
There talking there's some tough Questions To. Zach taylor i'll be.
There tomorrow i'll report to you next week on that.

Speaker 3 (01:21:58):
Tough questions Does? That? Taylor okay was?

Speaker 2 (01:22:01):
He planning why did he get rid of Louis? An
arumo so things. Like that we'll get. It done we'll
get it. Done tomorrow, all right we. Move on but
now it's time for The tire iraq play. The day
the one to one pitch swung On hick well deep
the right, center field going back his way at, the
track at.

Speaker 7 (01:22:18):
The wall gone red Slam Forer kyle swimmer and he
turns this.

Speaker 2 (01:22:26):
Game around oh the Kid, From? Middleton ohio how do
Than A? Firecracker mvp In The All? Star game Courtesy
The Phillies. Radio network that play today was brought to
you by Tire. I rack for over, forty Years ti
iraq has been helping customers find the right tires, to
howe what and where. They Drive ship fast and free
back By free road has a protection with convenient installation

(01:22:47):
options like mobile, tire installation tire raq, dot com the
way tire biden should be and the way football should
be talked about. And discussed this, none BETTER and i
mean That Than. BUCKY brooks, I know i work with
a lot of the guys, around here and they've been,
great ones but not as Good As. Buckie brooks he's
head and shoulders. Above. All RIGHT and i beg YOU
thought i forgot about you WITH the nfl dot. COM

(01:23:09):
story i beg YOU thought, I FORGOT but i. DID
not i did not because the twenty TWENTY Five nfl
all breakout team, On, defense okay we got that. Right
now and last week we talked about and you wrote
about the eleven offensive players poised to make serious noise
this year IN. The nfl now you've. Got defense how
do you? DO this, i mean you haven't even seen

(01:23:31):
these guys play. This year you don't know what's. Going
on how do you pick this out of? A barrel
how does?

Speaker 4 (01:23:35):
IT work, i mean like certainly not out of.

Speaker 3 (01:23:39):
A barrel i think what you're trying to do is
you're trying to project guys who are poised to have
the opportunity to break out in a. Major way and
a lot of times when, you look you're looking, At,
like okay who are some of the first round picks
that have yet the pop due to maybe a log
jam at, the position but you've. Seen flashes then you
look at some of the guys who have, played well

(01:24:00):
outplayed their, draft position who've earned. Bigger roles so you
take all that into stuff. You read you kind of
hear what coaches are saying about, certain Players, because andy you,
know this coaches end up. Telling everything they can't keep
a secret. For anything so when guys are performing well
and guys are on the verge of, breaking out they

(01:24:21):
love to kind of put their name out there and
float some stuff so they can, be, LIKE see i
told you guys are offseason he. Was coming and so
there's some of that that is also baked.

Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
Into it, all right let's get into this. RIGHT now,
I mean i look at your LIST and i want
to talk about the linebacker On The Green. Bay packers
i'm impressed with. This kid The Linebacker eddrian Cooper all
right IS The Nfc defensive player Of the week twice as.
A rookie last year twenty four second, round pick but

(01:24:50):
he was not A defensive rookie Of the. Year finalist
he finished sixth in. The, VOTING well i MADE and
i think maybe because he. Was heard he missed like
the last three games of the year. Last year so
this guy can rush, a passer this guy. Can cover,
AND honestly, i mean you Have Two Green bay packers
in there for. Defensive players but tell me a little
Bit About eddrin cooper because, this guy they say has

(01:25:12):
gained twenty pounds in muscle since he Arrived At. GREEN
bay i didn't think there was that much Food In.
Green bay, he really he's up to. Two forty and
they say, he's powerful, he's explosive and. He's, STRONG.

Speaker 3 (01:25:23):
Well i mean that's saying. A lot but he is the,
ideal hit run and cover linebacker that you want to
see in a vision based Defense That jeff affley wants to.
Run mini they want to keep eyes on the ball
more zone than man so they can, see it react,
to it make plays. On it he's the. Perfect fit
and last year he led all linebackers with thirteen tackles.

(01:25:44):
For loss and he is a rookie leader in so
many different categories that you just know more opportunity settled
in because he knows the speed of the league and,
Those things he's going to perform at a.

Speaker 4 (01:25:55):
High Level so i'm excited to See what cooper.

Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Does right and his teammate Defensive end Lucas, van ness
talk about him because he was a rotational what's a?
Rotational player you? Mentioned that what does?

Speaker 4 (01:26:07):
THAT mean i mean he wasn't a four.

Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
Time starter means he rotated in at, defensive ends so
maybe on, sub packages obvious. Passing downs he would come
in select packages where they wanted to get him on.
The field he's there and in a part. Time role
over two years he has like, seven sacks but you
can just see that when he has more opportunities to get,
after it he's going. To produce this year he may

(01:26:29):
have a legitimate chance to get on the field as.
A starter and with that expect the numbers. Did.

Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
Grow well this kid was a first round pick back
in twenty twenty free so this is got to be.
HIS year, i mean the people that drafted, him say wait,
a minute. We're waiting this's got to be, your, breakout
yea because we've been waiting. For you first round picks
should be getting it done. BY now.

Speaker 3 (01:26:50):
I mean. In, theory yes, you know but normally it
takes two to three years to determine if someone. Can
play AND sometimes I mean i like to liken the
analogy to no matter when, you're drafted where, you.

Speaker 4 (01:27:02):
Drafted all these guys in the league are like.

Speaker 3 (01:27:04):
Popcorn. Colonels right you can put all the popcorn kernels
in the same pot with the, same oil.

Speaker 4 (01:27:10):
But they pop at.

Speaker 3 (01:27:12):
Different times and you would like to think that your
first round pick is gonna pop sooner than your later,
round picks but it doesn't. Always happen the thing that
we do know or, we anticipate is when you were
first round and you have first, round talent at some
point that talent is going to, shine through which is
why you continue to hope on.

Speaker 2 (01:27:26):
Them, all right stick on defense because you picked the
defensive guy wh's got a defensive End. From indianapolis was
it lay, too light lay two lay too Late.

Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
To yeah a guy was drafted in the first round
year two years ago coming OUT of ucla natural, pass
rusher probably the best natural pass rushing specialists in. That
class when you watch, him play when, he's wired he
has all the tools in. The toolbox he can wash when.

(01:27:56):
With speed he can turn speed. Into power he has
clever movement instead alive and to consistently get. The quarterback
now he just needs the opportunity to. Do it and
we Talk about lou AND. A roomo we Saw what
lou was able to Do With trey hendrickson And How
trey henderson was a good player and Who was he
became a great Player in cincinnati Based on low's ability

(01:28:17):
to create one on one matchups. For him same thing
applies with a lots younger not, as accomplished, but man
the skill said. Is outstanding, YOU.

Speaker 2 (01:28:26):
Know i did some interesting reading on THIS when i
heard about, this GUY because i couldn't even pronounce, his
name but he is tied for being the highest drafted
defensive player During the colts General manager chris baalace nine Years.
In indianapolis that's. Pretty big that's a. BIG deal, i, MEAN.

Speaker 3 (01:28:43):
Yeah i mean that is a. Big deal he's up
there and so with that comes a lot of EXPECTATIONS
that i believe.

Speaker 2 (01:28:49):
He'll Fulfill, all right we move along now To The.
Arizona cardinals you've got a defensive lineman by the name
of and he's a, defensive tackle like believe is need
To Tackle darius robinson right first round Pick in april in,
The draft, and honestly this guy was a first round
pick last year draft of, twenty seventh but he had

(01:29:09):
a calf injury in training camp and spent the rest
of the year trying to just, catch up so he didn't.
Do much he played only six games a. Year ago
so you're making a big leap here saying that this
guy is going to have. A, breakout yeh because in
six games you don't. See much but he did have
ten tackles in. A, sack.

Speaker 3 (01:29:28):
Yeah you haven't, seen much but you can no, more
opportunities and the injuries and stuff limited. His impact BUT
what i do know is there's always a place in
the league for a guy that, plays, hard, relentless motor high,
effort player and then when you're physical and have, violent
hands it gives you. A chance i'm banking on his
ability to contribute because of his violence and, his NonStop

(01:29:48):
relentless approach to play in.

Speaker 2 (01:29:50):
The, position violence violence, IS good i, guess.

Speaker 3 (01:29:53):
Right always can't go wrong. BEING violent i guess.

Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
You're, right okay who's this guy In the? Rushton? Command? Is?
Uh He Jon, Newton, okay newton.

Speaker 3 (01:30:08):
He Might Be johnny appleseed all. THOSE things i think
the Thing About John jerson newton is he is a
guy that had a little injury coming, into camp didn't
really get a chance to fully. Do it BUT now
i just look at the upgrades that they've made along their.
Front line he's a big part of what the commanders
are hoping we'd be a front line that can get
them over the top and Into The. Super bowl, very, active,

(01:30:31):
quick athletic has the ability, to play uh, with speed finesse.
And power plays on the other side of the line.
Of SCRIMMAGE when i think about the guys that they
brought in because they have a bunch of veterans that
they're Playing With patrick wise, and uh You Know javon
kinlaw and, those guys he's the. Perfect fit look for
him to have. An impact.

Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
All right now we go Into The seattle seahawks, and
uh You Picked tyree knight as linebacker fourth. Round pick
Got a texas l passo. The miners, all right eighty
eight tackles is. A rookie three, full losses one and a,
half sacks four quarterback hits in. Sixteen games you know
it's great because years ago they never had these stats for.

(01:31:12):
Defensive guys it's pretty good that they have them. Right
now but this is great for. Contract negotiations so you
like this kid?

Speaker 4 (01:31:18):
Breaking, IT yeah i do, like HIM and i like
Him in mike.

Speaker 3 (01:31:20):
McDonald's Defense mike bonald HIGH a q defense that, he
simplified so he allows guys to, play fast physical they
can get. Around it this dude, has, it man he has.
The goods he is active in around the line. Of
scrimmage and remember all those numbers that you. Talk about he.

Speaker 4 (01:31:35):
Did it in a part.

Speaker 3 (01:31:36):
Time role he only played like forty one forty two
percent of the snaps and they increase at the end of.
THE year i want, to say last, six games he
played maybe in eighty percent of the snaps and he
averaged eight tackles. Per game so the more, he plays
the more. Productive years which is why in a four,
time role lights out over one. Hundred tackles a bunch
of plays he's.

Speaker 2 (01:31:54):
Gonna, MAKE okay i, respect you YOU know, i Do
but i'm gonna throw out a name to see what
do you think. About this i'm going to challenge you
on The Linebacker derek Hale in seattle thirty seventh pick
in the twenty twenty. Three draft, eight sacks twenty one
quarterback hits. LAST year i think this guy's gonna have
one hell of. A year he's the Breakout guy i'm
picking For The. Seattle Seahawks, derek hale what do?

Speaker 3 (01:32:14):
YOU think? I, mean look he should. Be there they
expected him to. Make plays he was drafted in the.
Second round they thought he was going to come in
and make an impact, right away and he's looking he
certainly made. That impact the reason the linebacker stood out
to me night over him is just how quickly he
jumped in and being a forefront pick to jump in
and have that kind, of success it just makes you

(01:32:36):
want to keep an eye. On Him But derek hall
is also another one that can make a. Major impact
shit make an impact because he's settled in and he's
in a role that allow him to make a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:32:44):
Of, Plays Huh, detroit lions, right now here's a team
right NOW that i think you have to put a question.
Mark there they lost their, offensive coordinator they lost their.
Defensive coordinator how big a deal is that for a
ball club to lose those positions on a team that's a,
BIG deal.

Speaker 4 (01:33:01):
I think i mean it's a.

Speaker 3 (01:33:04):
HUGE deal i mean you just thinking about the way,
the team the teams, are, constructed like you don't want
to lose, good players and so you got to make
sure that those guys that you have in place are
there to step up and make. Those plays AND what i,
Look for i'm always looking for the instinct, the playmakers
the guys who have, the instincts awareness, in diagnosis skills
to make. Those plays and these guys have shown the

(01:33:25):
capacity to. Do it and when you lose, your team
you think about your team being built strong right up,
the middle but being fast on. The edges it's putting
the pieces of the.

Speaker 2 (01:33:33):
Puzzle together do you See the lions maybe taking a
step back a little bit?

Speaker 3 (01:33:37):
THIS year.

Speaker 4 (01:33:39):
I, think so just because of the loss.

Speaker 3 (01:33:41):
Of coordinators they not Only Lost being johnson and all
of his creative, offensive stuff They Lost aaron glenn who
really built this team into a respectable. Defensive unit without that,
brain power how do they maximize? The roster even though
you can have guys new guys, call it it's still
different because those other guys, knew it they built it.

(01:34:01):
From scratch just A different i mean it's just a
different hustle when it comes, to it.

Speaker 2 (01:34:06):
Right and Jared godf, RIGHT now i think he's gonna
take more control of the offense because what is he
now under his third Coordinator? IN detroit, i mean he
knows what's. GOING on i think they're gonna give him
more maybe freedom of the reins to. Roll it do
you think one?

Speaker 3 (01:34:22):
Hundred, percent yeah he absolutely get, more freedom, more responsibility and, with, that,
like look there's a lot, of power a lot of control.
In THAT so i look forward to this being a
team that gets it done and gets it done a
little a little differently than they're.

Speaker 2 (01:34:35):
Done, previously okay let's get back to the Breakout the.
Detroit lines you got A quarterback Terry And, arrol arnold
and this, guy played according to STATISTICS that i looked,
up here the most manned coverage snaps of any corner
in the league as. A Rookie, all right how do you?

Speaker 1 (01:34:51):
Like that.

Speaker 2 (01:34:51):
That's big there's a lot of confidence they showed.

Speaker 4 (01:34:53):
This, kid yeah a lot.

Speaker 3 (01:34:55):
Of confidence and that was Part Of aaron glenn saying
they wanted to play a bunch of. Man demands so
is He With, kevin shepherd does does he? Change that
do they move away from that more man? Less man
that is to. Be determined BUT what i will Say
About terry arnold knows to, know sticky, very aggressive but
also a technical corner on. The perimeter well school Played

(01:35:16):
For Nick sabling alabama for all, those years so he
knows how to play. The game and he is shown
in his confidence in his resilience as. A. Rookie dad
he has the, goods now it's about putting.

Speaker 2 (01:35:26):
It. Together wow this does not bode well for teams
in the division Because The baltimore ravens have. This Quarterback,
nate wiggins twenty twenty four first, round pick played the
rookie year and they say the more, he played the better.
He looked quarterbacks had just a sixty seven percent quarterback
rating With. Targeting wiggins he allowed only thirty one receptions

(01:35:47):
on sixty. Two targets he played sixty eight Percent of baltimore's,
defensive snaps which is a lot for, a rookie and
his rookie season probably would have been even more impressive
if he had quitte a few more of the passes
he got his. Hands on they say he put on
ten pounds of muscle in the. Off season this kid's
going to. Be something he may Be A pro bowl of.
THIS year, i, think.

Speaker 4 (01:36:08):
Yeah really, good player slender on. The reimeter so a
lot of the.

Speaker 3 (01:36:12):
Stuff that you were worried about when he came Out
of clemson was his ability. To tackle but he has
the cover skills and the goods to get. It done
when's this one on. One matchups they put a lot
of pressure on their corners because they blitzed, a lot
but he's been able to. Hold up and Playing Opposite
yarry alexander, this year he'll have more opportunities because people
may Avoid. Targeting alexander that means more plays in, his direction.

(01:36:34):
More opportunities can he cash in on some of those
opportunities that arrive off tips?

Speaker 2 (01:36:39):
And overthrows, all right we have another corner back. OVER
here i mean this is like. YOUR strength, i mean
you look at, that position right because you know. It
better did you see film on all these players?

Speaker 4 (01:36:50):
Or no, OH no i saw a tape.

Speaker 3 (01:36:53):
On everybody you want to do it not only off,
their numbers but you want to look at tape to
make sure that you feel good about how they're being
utilized and how their roles could.

Speaker 2 (01:37:01):
Have span, all right let's go To the. La charge
you got a. Cornerback There tar hepe still fifth round
pick of twenty, twenty four and they claim that he
was one of the steals of. The draft how? Is
that why was he a steal of?

Speaker 3 (01:37:14):
The, draft well he's still in a draft because he
came in, right away Took Over Forsante. Samuel jr, after
injury but had four interceptions and was all over. The
place And Then jesse mender's scheme which places a value
a high premium on guys that can, play zone guys
that can play off AND what i call shadow, and
Mirror and washington quarterback can do, those things still can.

(01:37:36):
Do that he's. Done that Now That samuel junior is out,
the building he have an opportunity to settle in their
role and see how much he. Can improve i'm count
on him. Improving significantly, and look without him even improving,
that much he's already a pretty. Good corner we're talking
about an opportunity to be a great corner if he
can make.

Speaker 8 (01:37:56):
Those.

Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
IMPROVEMENTS yeah i read something on the kids still and
it said that he has tremendous instincts in. Zone coverage
what kind of instincts must you have to be tremendous
in zone, coverage.

Speaker 3 (01:38:09):
Instincts awareness, route recognition. Diagnostic skills like when you're, playing
zone you're playing with more as on. The quarterback and
so if you can take, the poiloid the snapshot and
see what is happening in front, of you now you
can get early breaks on the throws from. THE quarterback
i liken it, to, baseball right and baseball when you

(01:38:32):
still base is when you. Steal second you steal it off,
the pitcher not. The catcher so you want to see the.
Ball thrown you want to see the high leg kick.
The motion, in football it's the, same thing whatever the
little tail that the quarterback, gives off whether it's padding
the ball or something that he does to trigger that
he's about to let. It go if you have great instincts,

(01:38:55):
and awareness you start making breaks before he's even in
his motion because you know that's where the.

Speaker 2 (01:38:59):
Ball is one, last THING if i got to, ask
you the defensive Coordinator In la jesse Meant that rick meant. His,
Kid okay. I'M shocked i know he Was at michigan
and a defensive coordinator, as well but he started At
the College Of Mount, saint joe WHICH is i Think
A division iii school In the cincinnati area at. One
time how surprised are you that this kid like rose,

(01:39:21):
the ranks climb those ranks to become a decordinator In
The National football league and he's. Done well jesse meant.

Speaker 4 (01:39:27):
There he has.

Speaker 3 (01:39:29):
DONE well i THINK what i would say like not
surprise based on, You know dad as, a coach been
around the game for a, long time paid, his Dues
took rose at lower levels and, crushed him had an
opportunity to work With, the ravens Crushed at but then
he gets his decoordinator Spot with Michigan. Winsda nati that's

(01:39:50):
when all odds really were. On him the thing that
you want to see from everybody is no matter what,
they're given they. Maximize it and if they can asks
amount a, small role than you have confidence today were
really maximize the opportunities in a. Big role and what
we saw is this dude has been able to do
it at those those those, smaller roles which is why

(01:40:12):
he's really been able to crush it and the role
that he's currently in As the. Chargers decoordinator, All, right,
well said there.

Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
We go he's as he's in a hell of. A
job he, really has and so, Of You, bucky brooks
get him ON. X App bunky Brooks And ANDY furman
fsr eight seven seven ninety Nine. On fox that's our.
Phone number that translates to eight seven seven nine nine
six sixty three. Sixty nine and of course we have
in this hour The blame game. Coming up but, right
now now you could point your finger at, someone else

(01:40:41):
will do that during the, blame game but it could
be a. Mixed blessing just wondering is it a curse
or is it. A blessing we'll tell you what it,
is next a mixed blessing that's coming.

Speaker 5 (01:40:52):
Right up don't.

Speaker 2 (01:40:53):
Go anywhere He Is, Bucky Brooks I'm andy furman and
We Are Fox sports Sunday on FOX Bus ra and
of course we're gonna Have The blame game in about
ten to twelve minutes. From now and let's move on
here because this. Is interesting this is really going to
get involved and some heavy duty discussion, right now but
shortly after, the show our podcast will be. Going up
if you missed any of, today's show be sure to

(01:41:14):
check out. The podcast Just Search Fox sports radio wherever

review of the podcast righted at five. Five, stars again
Just Search Fox sports radio wherever you get, your podcasts
and you'll see today's show posted right after we get
up there and right now we are live In The
Fox sports. Radio, studios now let's Talk about i've quote

(01:41:35):
about a. Mixed blessing let's talk. About hype let's talk.
About hype how are? Effects athletes how are? Effects teams
and you played, The Game, bucky brooks you played the
game when you read about and you hear and listen
on the radio when you were a player about things
that you should, be doing, not you but your team should,
be doing and all the things that's the expectations of.

(01:41:55):
Your team how does that affect? The team i'll talk.
About hype, You know i'm. Like huckster i'm a. Hype
master i've done that most of. My LIFE but i
never played. The game, you know it's really easy for
me to send out material to media people and tell
them about how good my team is going. To be
and you, see that, you know we just saw that
AT The Sec media days Or The Big twelve. Media

(01:42:16):
days it's all. About hype it's all huckster is and
that's what. It is but how does it? Affect coaches
how does it? AFFECT teams i think it put coaches jobs.
IN jeopardy i mean, right now hype or. Lock thereof,
You know i'm Looking at University. Of cincinnati they picked
them eleventh to finish In The big twelve. This year
that's going to be death for their. Coaching, staff really it.
Will be so hype a lock thereof really and truly

(01:42:39):
can measure a team and affect the team and their
coaching staff. And, players yeah one.

Speaker 3 (01:42:44):
Hundred percent it plays a huge role because what it
does it says to expectations for. The, public right so
the public begins to believe. The hype so if a
reporter or multiple reporters right that this team should be,
the best so this team should be. The one you
come in with, these expectations and no matter what a
coach tries to either diffuse or temper those expectations, or

(01:43:07):
whatever what's out there for public consumption overrides what could
be a reasonable expectation for.

Speaker 4 (01:43:13):
Your team the thing that you try to.

Speaker 3 (01:43:15):
Do when you're, a coach you try to ignore, the, noise,
right like you don't want to play. Into that you can,
acknowledge it but you're try and focus on the day.
To day but if you worry too much about the
results and not enough about, the process ultimately you end
up disappointed because your habits don't match. Your actions and
so you got to work on the short term before

(01:43:36):
you can deal with the.

Speaker 2 (01:43:37):
Long term, all right you do me a. Faby again
the fact that, you play you have all the experience
in the world and you've, been there. Done that take
me behind. The scenes let's go back To the University
Of north carolina and they had the media days OF
the acc when you. Were there the coach goes down
there to, media days he takes a player or, two normally,
you know what does he tell? The players what does
he tell the team prior to the? Media days what?

(01:43:59):
The say whatnot? To say what does he say nothing?
At all how does? THAT work i want to know
the inner workings.

Speaker 4 (01:44:04):
OF this, I mean i think for, some teams depending on.

Speaker 3 (01:44:09):
The, level right when you're a high school, of college
you tell, you guys, hey man be smart with. Your
answers don't give any bulletin. Board material make sure you're
thanking your teammates for the success that you've had because.
It's eleven it's not just one person that. Does everything
when you're in, the pros, you know you don't say much.

(01:44:30):
To players you expect them to. Be professionals you may
have some things that you've talked about early in camp
when you have like team meetings about how to handle,
the press but you may, tell, them amen make sure
that the things that happen in the locker room, are
sacred so everything's not for. Public consumption so let's be
careful and selective with what. We share put the, team

(01:44:52):
first and operate in. That manner that's typically how it goes.

Speaker 2 (01:44:56):
Into, pros okay when you're in, the pros when you're at,
team meeting how to handle? The press was that handled by?
The coach was it handled BY the? Pr department it's a.

Speaker 3 (01:45:05):
Little bit, of, Both, right like if you're really good as,
an organization you have multiple touch points when it comes
to how you get your guys ready to handle. The
media if you really are, on it you should HAVE
the pr team work with the team to make sure
that they're prepared for the questions and those things to
coach and make subtle statements about a let's make sure

(01:45:26):
that we talk about our, core values our ethos or
whatever that doesn't necessarily get. In print but the other
stuff you want, to handle you want to make sure
that everyone is aware of what THEY'RE going i would
also say this ABOUT the. Pr STAFF the pr staff
can prep the player for what is on the horizon
from the throng of. Media, reporters hey here's. What's buzzing

(01:45:49):
they're probably going to ask you just this and. That
whatever as, A player i've always advised players before the camera,
goes on before they hit, the recorder ask, the reporter,
a man what what are we going to? Talk about
and most reporters and most people are good about kind, of,
LIKE hey i want to talk, about this this. And,
That okay so, you KNOW because i want to help

(01:46:12):
the reporter do their. Job better so if you give
me a little time, TO prepare i can give you a.
Better response and so it should be this cooperation between
media and PLAYER and pr team to make sure that
you're putting out the best content that, you can giving
you the right answers to the questions that.

Speaker 2 (01:46:29):
You're, asked okay when you played, the game when you
were In The National football league and the game, was
over they are like the fifteen minute cooling off period
and they opened the. Locker room when they opened the,
locker room was it a free for all media people
can go to anybody's locker or is it like today
when today they take a couple of players in the
coach and they have a media room, set up but
they go on the stage and the media sits around

(01:46:50):
and they, ask questions which is really ridiculous Because if
i'm sitting there and i have a real good question,
To ask i'm not throwing it out there to the
group because they'll use it, before me, you know tv'll
use IT before i could print it in. The paper
so it's kind. Of ridiculous but when, you played was
an open locker just it could just come in and
go to any lock of stall and talk.

Speaker 3 (01:47:11):
To anybody it was more like that they could come
in and go to any locker stall and talk, to
anybody and, that's OKAY but i would say it's a.
Little intrusive i've never really understood why it was necessary
for kind of like the locker. Room invasion all the reporters,
coming in guys are half naked showering coming out of,
the shower you're interviewing somebody like they got a jockstrap

(01:47:34):
on and a towel. Around him, TO me i just
think he could always be done better if it was
in like a neutral place like, you've, seen, like hey
let's go to. ANOTHER room i could talk to you there.
OR whatever i never understood the. LOCKER room i just think.
IT'S weird i think it's weird for me to have
to sit to you half naked talking about. The game
we can do a much better INTERVIEW if i had

(01:47:56):
some clothes on them in a. Different room but, that's
well we got to do that.

Speaker 2 (01:47:59):
Right now you're not gonna be going take it right
now and.

Speaker 4 (01:48:02):
DO it, i mean it's just it's just a, different deal.

Speaker 3 (01:48:05):
That's.

Speaker 2 (01:48:05):
All yeah but, you, know HONESTLY as, I say I'VE
done pr for, sports teams college, and pro and at
the POINT when i was, doing it there was no.
SOCIAL media i don't know HOW the pr staff and
the coaching staff can handle. It today because you may
tell the players what to do to control them in
a setting with a, team setting, you know during, the

(01:48:26):
game after, the game during, the week whatever it. May
be but then they were on their own and they
get on their own Accounts to Instagram, or twitter whoever it,
may be and they just do something in this spur
of the moment that, kills everything and that that could.
DO it, i mean hit the Guy Like george pickens
was Like Recording mike tomlins postgame speech one time in

(01:48:47):
the locker room and he put it out there. For
consumption you just can't do stuff like that. AND that
i don't know how you. CONTROL it i just don't
know how you control.

Speaker 3 (01:48:55):
That stuff you talk about it over and over and.
Over again you make sure everyone is on the same
page when it comes to. That, stuff yeah but you
have to talk. About it you have to. Discuss it
you have to have a plan for how you're going to,
address it and then you address it over and. Over
again part of the job as the coach is to prepare.

(01:49:15):
The team just like you prepare the team, for games
you prepare them for that. Other stuff. You know you have, to,
remember man don't assume that these, guys know especially new generation.
Of players you got young players on. Your team you
have a. Young team they've lived their life out in
front of. Social media so you have to tell them
the does And, don'ts, hey man put your. Phone away in,
this instance no one. Taped this please don't tape. These

(01:49:39):
things these things are private for only our, Team consumption
so don't tape it and then put it. Out there
you have to have steady dialogue and let, them know
because if you don't, teach them how would they.

Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
EVER know i would tell, Them this and maybe it's kind,
of CRAZY but i would say if, that was, you
know a pr guy flot of team, RIGHT now i,
would say your phone when you're in the team setting
is as valuable as. Your playbook you wouldn't share your playbook.
With anybody don't share what's on your phone with.

Speaker 3 (01:50:07):
Anybody else that that, makes sense THAT'S not, i mean that's.
Good advice that makes a lot. Of sense. THANK you
i always always un, til guys remember. Grandma's watching so
make sure whatever, you're doing whatever you put, out there
Imagine if grandma had to come across. HER phone i.
Love that so always make sure that you represent the.

(01:50:27):
Right way.

Speaker 2 (01:50:29):
All, right now now we zoom into like, individual hype, you,
know good bitter. And different it's a blessing and mixedpel whatever.
MAY be i would tell you. Right now the ONLY
person i think that actually lived up to their Hype Was.
Lebron james he was on the Cover Of sports illustrated
as a high, school player and he certainly lived up to.
That hype, you know most of, the time it's kind of.

(01:50:50):
FIZZLES out, i mean now You've Got cooper flag. RIGHT now,
i mean we'll see what happens. With him he's been hyped,
pretty good and we'll see what happens Now, In. Dallas
mavericks but, you KNOW as, i say it could be,
a blessing but it could be a curse. AS well i,
don't know if you know people could. Handle it. It's
tough but do you Agree that lebron was the ONLY
guy i remember that really and truly was on the

(01:51:12):
COVER of si as a, high schooler and he certainly
lived up and maybe bypassed.

Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
The, HYPE yes i would say that he's one of
the only ones that we've seen who was hyped as
a youngster that has lived up. TO it i Would
Say bryce harper is probably one of, the Others Because
bryce harper was hyped as a high school phenom that
has kind of lived up. To it, But. Yeah lebron
no one that had to Do with lebron has had
to do coming into the league and playing in. The

(01:51:39):
league he was on the cover, s force illustrated as the.
Chosen one everyone followed his every move his last year in,
high school doesn't go, to college comes right TO, the
nba and from day one IN the nba he has
been a high level to. Dominant player nobody. Did that,
AND look i don't get Into The kobe, lebron DEBATE
but i WILL say I remember Kobe is rooky, year

(01:52:01):
whatever like a little slow cook before he he Became
The Kobe bean bryant that everyone loved. And adored in
terms of his dominance in. The league lebron wasn't afforded
that opportunity to slowly acclimate to, the league jump right
in it and became a dominant player. RIGHT away i.

Speaker 2 (01:52:17):
Will tell you. This much normally the first round pick
In The National football league quarterback is hype to the moon.
And Back if I'm cam ward this Year The, TENNESSEE
titans I Thank travis Hunter And shador sanders because really
they took away a lot of. The hype miss if
you will That cam ward probably would have we don't
hear much. At all if anything About, cam ward he's gonna,

(01:52:39):
be tickled pick. ABOUT it i don't think these players want.
THE hype, i mean you would think that they would
be writing if it Wasn't For travis Hunter, or shaduur
they would Say cam ward's gonna Lead the titans To The. Promised,
land nothing nothing at all About. CAM ward i think he.
Loves it.

Speaker 3 (01:52:55):
Yeah. He, DOES look i don't think he. LOVES it
i think. He is he's making notes about kind of
being not disrespected. But underappreciated and because, of, that look
he's going to want to make sure that he makes
his mark when he gets, his chance and as he
gets his chance to, DO more i think we'll see
that kind of bubble up to. The surface, But Yeah

(01:53:16):
sureris anders was the hype one coming in and he
has Overshadowed cam ward despite being a fifth round pick
And cam ward being number. One overall.

Speaker 2 (01:53:24):
Uh huh let's talk about some of these players over
the years who were prior to and did they live
up to. Their hype i'm Looking The. Cam Newton cam
Newton The carolina panthers back in. Twenty, eleven yeah he
Lived up they when they Call, him superman was not His.
Nickname superman and as the, first, five.

Speaker 3 (01:53:45):
Yeah like he definitely lived up. To it number one.
Overall pick there's a lot of people That loved hay
very polarizing, into it but he came in the league
and people talked about he couldn't throw first game throws
for four. Hundred yards since hencheld recording does that scores all,
THE touchdown i want, to say redefines. The position but
certainly played the game differently than others that played. It

(01:54:05):
Before Whereas michael vick was, the, spectacular finesse, Flashy Runner
cam newton was a board doozer, at quarterback physical runner
in the, red zone running quarterback power and doing all.
Those things he. Was different he lived up to the hype,
for sure no doubt.

Speaker 2 (01:54:22):
About that and ONE guy i think they're really not
living up to, the Hype The heisman trophy winner in
two thousand, And Three. Carson palmer he had some difficulty
because he Played THE cincinnati i, don't know WE'LL see
i don't know. ANYBODY else, I mean i. Don't know
i'm just trying to think who really lived up to.
THE hype, i mean some guys bypassed. THE hype, I Mean, matthew,

(01:54:43):
Stafford No, eli manning. Probably Not maybe andrew lucked to.
SOME extent i. Don't.

Speaker 3 (01:54:48):
Know, maybe yeah it's hard to because there's so many
expectations that come with being. Number, one overall it can
just be a. Different challenge no doubt.

Speaker 2 (01:54:56):
About that you, were lucky you weren't, number, ONE right.

Speaker 3 (01:55:01):
I mean i would rather be number one and deal
with all the stuff that comes, with it because there's
a lot. Of it there's a lot of luxuries and
advantages to come with being number.

Speaker 2 (01:55:10):
There's a lot of jack with number. One, too, yes
sure Here We, Bucket Brooks, Andy Firmer Fox sports Sunday On.
Fox burday this. Is it this is a time where
you could point your finger at somebody else and not get.
In trouble the blame game is. Freaking next are the
blame game coming right up right Here On Fox, Sports
