something that is said that absolutely blows your mind, like

I'm not real familiar with his work, but he's covered
the Calves forever and he makes a statement about how
he thinks, you know, when Lebron retires, it's gonna be

a big deal, and that gets aggregated from a podcast
that Lebron is gonna retire and he's gonna have a
retirement tour. By the way, NBA between NBA Central, NBA Central,
and I don't know every other NBA website out there,
y'all kind of suck at aggregating. I'm just gonna tell
you right now, it's like you hear a little bit
of something and it's like, run with that, run with it.

like it's official Karl Anthony Towns for Lebron James, Go Go,
go tweet. I don't know what the the end game
is for you, but y'all really really bad at it

eye of the beholder. I feel like there's tons going on.
I just sat here tonight and I'm on a high
from watching UFC three eighteen Poyer's last fight True Warrior
one of the Greats against Max Holloway, which is weird
to have a trio like the you have the trifecta
fight whenever one guy had won both of them. Usually

whenever you have a third fight, it's like, ah, the
payoff fight. They Poorier won the first one, Holloway won
the second one.

You're like, no, I Dustin won both of them.

And it was in Poyer's hometown of New Orleans, and
it was an awesome atmosphere and it was great. I
could sit here and just talk about it all night long.

that way for Poyer. He kind of got it handed
to him tonight. But he was a warrior and he

never gave up. And UFC three eighteen for I love
the UFC, I do. I don't know where its place
is in the pecking order of topics of conversation on

we're gonna talk about this to night. We took calls
and it was great. But it seems as if kind

of like everything that's not mainstream, everything that's not football
or even to a certain degree, NBA or Major League
Baseball or college football, it's almost got this niche audience
right where, sure, we could probably sit here and talk
about all night long, but you'd get more people like, gosh, dude,
we get it.

It was MMA. It was a great fight.

Can we move on outside of those that would want
to talk about the legacy of Porrier and what this
needs now from Max Holloway going forward, and you know
anything else kind of from the car that to it out?
How I think New Orleans show that it's a place
that you can take UFC fights. I mean at I
don't know off the top of my head how many
events New Orleans has.

Hosted, but they they brought the house down, and I

It was one of their native sons fighting, so you
get a little bit more juiced for that. But I
thought it was a great show and kudos to Dana White.
But as a diehard UFC guy, I do think there's
too many fights.

I know, you've got so many different networks that are
involved in so many different entities that one of people
than want to fight, so many players want to put
them on, but I just you know, it kind of
waters it down a bit. But tonight was one of
those moments that you kind of circled on the calendar.

You had sharpeyed it. Maybe you saved up a few dollars.

Or maybe you got a buddy like Guy Doo named
Shady Sean that can find a way for you to
watch it. Not here to say anything, just saying but
you save up a bit to buy the pay per
view because it's one you want to see. And when
when we as sports fans are constantly in a place
that they're always trying to get into our pockets, they
being the owners, the administrators of players, whomever. Right, our

money sustains sports, It really does. It's fans because we
support the events, we buy the pay per views, we
pay exorbitant amounts of money for parking. But when you
have one of these events that delivers and is worth it,
kind of restores your faith a bit right, kind of
as a fan, like, hey, that's why. That's why when
your team wins a big game and you spent the

four hundred to five hundred and six hundred dollars on
tickets and it's worth it like that, that's why I
do this. So kudos to UFC tonight, Kudos to Max Holloway.
Couldn't have been easy for dush and Poorier, but man,
they absolutely put on a show. So I would love
to carve out some time because I think I think
tonight UFC. I don't know if it took center stage

in the sports world, but it's it's demanding our attention
based on what took place to Now, in addition to UFC,

I don't know how much of a difference this is
gonna make, and I don't really know what the long
term plan truly is for Lebron James, but the Lakers
did add Marcus Smart. Now, I, like many of you,
were a little bit shocked to find out that Marcus
Smart played for the Washington Wizards. It was one of
those moments where, even as a diehard NBA fan, I'm

watching saying Marcus Smart did? Did he retire? What happened
to Marcus Smart? Last I heard he got traded, But
after a season that was split between Memphis and Washington
in which he battled some injuries, he back and he's
gonna give it a go in Los Angeles and we'll
see how it works. Which is wild to think that.

I mean, Marcus Smart. Just a quick moment for those
of you in the northeast Boston fans. He wasn't like
Boston basketball. It's not when I thought of those great
Celtics teams, maybe even the great season of what was
that nineteen or eighteen when they were really good, is

not one of those moments where you're like, oh, yeah,
it was Marcus Smart's team. But he was one of
those guys who was always there. He was always a
difference maker. He seemed to step up big time in
the playoffs, not necessarily scoring wise, but just a true
defensive guy, a guy who's been named the NBA Defensive

Player of the Year as recently as twenty twenty two.

A dude that had been the All.

First Team NBA defensive performer on three occasions during his career,
and a guy who kind of becomes synonymous with the
Boston Celtics. And now it's kind of wild to think
about it. After spending what ten seasons, nine seasons at Boston,
this is his fourth team that Marcus Smart has played

on now essentially in the last two and a half years.
And you might say four, You're like, wait a minute,
it was just Memphis and Washington last year. Uh, let's
not forget. Let's not forget.

traded him, it still factors in. So he goes to
Los Angeles after spending ninety percent of his career, well

fascinating move by the Lakers tonight, and one that, if
you believe the hype and what's out there, is solely
the responsibility am Luca Dagi, who said he wanted to
play with Marcus Smart even though they're had been a
couple of teams, and I think Boston was even included
in that that had reached out to Marcus Smart and

old Minnesota had you know, he bought it, got bought
out by Washington, and now he finds himself in a
Laker uniform.

it's back, and you've got excitement. I was hoping that
we'd have a game tonight. I was thinking that while

game because they were an extra innings in Seattle, and

then this happened. So SZAC flight situation maybe not quite
as automatic. Why what payten? What a finish? The Mariners?
I bring up what a finish? Because this had to

be I know, a week to week major league baseball,
A night and night major league baseball game probably doesn't
get top billing with Bernie or myself. Right, you're not
gonna spend a lot of time on the weekends going hey,
what do you guys think of that finish? And X
Y ors the game. It's just unless you live in
those markets. It's not gonna be a game that I

think captures the attention to the national media. But this
one tonight, this win by the Mariners, was fascinating because
in the bottom of the tenth inning, the Mariners tied
the game on one of the weirdest plays I think
I've ever seen. It looked like Josh Hayter, the Astros pitcher,

with Houston up six to five in the bottom of
the tenth inning, it looked like that he hit Dylan
Moore with a pitch, but the umpires ruled that it
had hit the knob of the bat somehow stayed in play,
and while more didn't run to first base, cal ralely
a home with a game tying run. Now I would

play the play by plays of each network, but it's
like four minutes in all, and maybe we revisit this
a little bit later on the program. But as wild
as the Acuna Junior throw was last night, this kind
of takes the cake because if it's a hit by pitch, listen,
Seattle's still very much alive, right, But what is ruled

as a ground out to first ends up tying the
game and giving the Mariners the win. Off the knob,
the little handle. Now we've seen more and more, I
think over the last couple of years. We see it
in college softball. We've seen a lot in college baseball,
and you've starting to see it more in Major League baseball,
where when pitchers come up and in, By the way

Ian Roddy, I'm reacting this right now in the studio
that I'm in my Fox Sports Radio studios in beautiful
scenic Goldsby, Oklahoma. So if you get the video buttons
so everyone can see. But whenever pitchers come up and in,
you'll have a batter kind of lean back a bit
and as the bat comes up, boom, it'll hit that

Meanwhile, quickly on baseball, before we get our initial break

right before the All Star break on My Friend Night Show,
and it's Saturday morning. I asked Brianna Morrow, was she
hitting the panic button yet for the Los Angeles Lakers?

All right, Los Angeles Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Excuse me? And the ads was no, you kidding me,
It's gonna be fine. Dodgers had lost seven in a row,
but they still had a four game lead in the West.
They then went on to take two of three from
the Giants, and you can kind of exhale a little
bit now. To start the second half of the season,

the Dodgers have lost the first two games the Milwaukee Brewers,
including a game tonight that had a very curious headline
to start things off with. Arguably, you know, one of
the most important pieces for the Dodgers, Mookie Betts getting binged.
Now we'll hear from Dave Roberts coming up a little

bit later on in the program. But and I'm sure
you can sell it as a rest day, and that's
that's the way I would look at it. But when
you're struggling and you just had the All Star break,
who the hell needs a rest day? It was, It's
just it's been a struggle for the Dodgers with their
starting pitchers. Again, another another night where you've got to

go to the pin by the fourth unacceptable. You know,
Gladston last night gives you a little hope because he
pitched well. It gave you a little hope that, okay,
maybe things are starting to come together. We'll see show

I feel like anyway, well, let's go over the big
news first and foremost Marcus Smart. First of all, I
think for some of us it was, oh, wow, he's
with the Wizards now. But then the second the second thing,
can he make an impact with the Lakers? Can he
be a difference maker for him?

Speaker 7 (18:49):
Well, he can be a difference because he has defensive
credentials and that's a huge need the Lakers need. They
need another strong locker room voice. I mean, Luca Don
Lebron James. They're the stars and Lebron's been a good leader,
but Marcus Smart has had a track record that he
can be the connector of calling both role players out

(19:10):
and superstars out. I think the biggest question mark is
his durability. In the last two seasons, he's in plagued
with injuries, so you know that is something that you know,
no matter what he's doing, this offseason. We're not going
to fully know, but I think within the context that
Marcus Smart was available through the buyout market, it's a

(19:31):
low risk move. It's two years, eleven million player option
second year. It's a no brainer of a deal. But
I think it is fair to say the Lakers don't
quite know what version of Marcus Smart will be, but
I will say that when he's on the court, he
will be able to check those boxes defensively and locker
room shooting. It's very up and down. There's games he'll

(19:52):
go a to eight from the field and other games
that he'll miss all seven of his threes. But the defense,
and the leadership and and the emotional intensity, those things
are very consistent.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
So what did it say to you when we see
the reports that this was something that Luca helped a broker.
I mean, again, we're starting to accept mark this is
going to be Luca's team going forward.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
But does that say anything to you?

Speaker 7 (20:19):
I think it says a lot. I think it shows
that clearly both the Lakers and Luca are operating as
if he's the one that they're building the team around.
And that's true. It's no longer about Lebron James. I
think the other thing is this is an encouraging sign
that Luca is very invested. I mean, technically speaking, Luka

(20:40):
Doncic could leave as a Laker next summer if he
doesn't sign extension in August once he's eligible. On the second, now,
I think it is a little bit open ended. Does
he sign right away? Does he wait for another year,
because if he waits another year, he theoretically could get
even more money. But I think they're writing has clearly

(21:01):
been on the wall when he's made different interviews ever
since getting traded. He's talked about wanting to win multiple
championships and the keyword is championships with an s plural,
And if he only has one year on his left
on his contract right now, there's no way he can
do that. So I think it's pretty clear cut. You

(21:22):
never say never in the NBA, but I'm willing to
put some money. Even though I lost money in Vegas,
I think I would win this bet that Luka Doncic
will be a Laker for multiple years to come.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Seems like they're listening to him, which is a good sign.
So does this mean maybe we'll get some clarity on
Lebron in his future or do you think they'll let
this linger a little bit longer.

Speaker 7 (21:46):
No, I think you know, the Lakers haven't say anything,
neither has Lebron. But I think that when you're connecting
the dots here, I think that this is an off
season story that I don't want to say. It doesn't
mean anything like it comes from a real place, but
I don't think it's going to accomplish anything. And so
with that, I think Lebron comes back as a Laker.

(22:09):
It could be his final season, or you know, maybe
he just rides this out and sees if he can
go to another team or accept a discount of deal
for another year with the Lakers. That remains to be seen,
but I fully expect he'll be with the Lakers this season.
That's not to say that things are all happy, go lucky,
but I think like since the beginning of their partnership,

(22:32):
the Lakers and Lebron James have been very transactional with
their relationship, and I think the statement that Rich Paul
made had more to do with the fact that, you know, look,
Lebron James is operating on a different timeline than the
Lakers might be because they're thinking more long term and
he wants to maximize his championship window. But I don't
think that that means he's going to get traded. There

(22:55):
may have been times if he's thought about that, and
he certainly sent those messages, particularly speaking, the Lakers aren't
going to get a good trade package for him, And
if Lebron really really wanted to play for another team,
he could have declined that player option, but instead he
went for sixty six million dollars. I don't fault him
for that. That's a lot of money. He deserves it.

(23:16):
He drives a lot of revenue. But you can't have
it both ways, and I don't think that at the
end of the day, he's going to negotiate a buyout
just to join another team. It'll this will all have
a pretty boring end, and it will be here reports
to training camp in a Lakers uniform.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Mark refreshed my memory. Were you in Vegas or were
you in Utah for the Summer League?

Speaker 7 (23:38):
Which I was in Vegas last week for Summer League.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
Obviously we had the Cooper flag situation, which we'll get
to here in just a bit, and them shutting him down.
But I have found myself being a person that has
been enamored with the Summer League. And I'm not usually
like this, but I kind of ug getting to see
topitch for the Thunder and what he could be or
what he's not going to be. But you know, the
Hornets have made their way to the finals of Vegas,

(24:03):
and you know, Kank Nipples.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
Looked pretty good.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
I'm not sitting here trying to say anything based on
Summer League, but you can get a pretty good feel
for rookies. I didn't know what to think when they
took him as high as they did. I wasn't asiyeh
on him as others. But of the rookies that I've
seen so far, Dan Bark, I think he's got a
chance to be a contributor.

Speaker 7 (24:24):
Yeah, I mean, he was rafted for for a reason.
I think the one thing that's very important to be
mindful about Conkin Nipple is he's not just a shooter.
He's a great playmaker. He's a great defender. I actually
was asking him a few days ago, just kind of
learning more of his backstory about what went into him

(24:45):
having this really solid all round game when we saw
him at Duke last year, and he was telling me
that earlier. You know in his childhood like he wasn't
a good shooter. It started as him being good everywhere else,
So he came a good shooter later on. I think
the other thing to your point at summer league, and

(25:06):
you know, what do you really make of this? He
didn't shoot the ball necessarily well. First came out, he
sat the second game because of a right ankle injury,
really tore it up the third game. He had a
breakout game today, as you alluded to. But through it
all this Hornet's assistant coach Chris chen who's overseen summer League,

(25:26):
he was very very impressed with his toughness and just
overall resiliency mental fortitude, and he thought that that was
very telling on what that could foreshadow for his rookie season,
because he was saying, like, your first NBA season, it's
certainly a roller coaster, like you're going to faith adversity,
And so he thought that that toughness early on is

(25:49):
a good indicator that whatever awaits him in the regular season,
he'll be pretty even keeled through shooting slumps, shooting streaks,
and everything else that comes with being a rookie with
just game of just of the physicality you know the
length of the season, back to backs, all that fun stuff.
So yeah, very encouraged with what he shown.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Yeah, two more and I'll let you get out of here.
You got to see firsthand Cooper Flag. We'll have plenty
of time to talk about Cooper Flag. I thought we
saw development in Bronnie James. Now I'm here and I'm
not here to tell you he's going to be the
sixth man or the seventh man in the Laker rotation
this year. But I thought I saw a dude that
looked like he belonged. Now, again, you got to put
that in context. It's the summer League. But are we

(26:30):
watching a guy developed in Bronnie James that could end
up having a role in the NBA eventually with the Lakers.

Speaker 7 (26:37):
Could? The keyword is could. He didn't dominate Summer League,
but he also showed a lot of marked improvement. You
saw that throughout his rookie season with just getting more
and more reps with the G League. What I saw
in Summer League was this a lot more confidence, a
lot more purpose, you know, a little bit better shooting.
His defense is really his calling card. He's not afraid

(26:58):
to guard guys eyes as well. As bigger guys. He
was really trying to own that defensive assignment when he
went up against Cooper flag and Cooper played really well.
But you know, there were a few times, most notably
when he forced a turnover that showed that he is
a good defender. Now the refs called a foul in that,
but eye test, I thought he got the steal. So

(27:20):
what does this mean? I think short term, it's most
likely ninth tenth player in the rotation. I mean, so
get some minutes, but not a lot of healthy scratches
as well. But even before all this, before he got drafted,
there were a few executives that I talked to that,
you know, they weren't trying to pan through rose colored glasses,

but they saw that there could be a scenario that
eventually he could carve a career out of being an
end of a rotation bench player. And what that means
is like seventh to eighth, ninth. I don't think anyone's
confusing him as a sixth man or even starter, but
even that occasional guy that gets spot minutes they thought
could be realistic because of how great his work at

the character, coachability, and the fact that he has skills,
but just aren't fully developed.

you surprised by it?

I thought it was very poetic. I thought I was
surprised by because keep in mind how things played out

Joe Cronid did not see eyed I things turned a

wanted to go to Miami, and you know Portland no,
by no means, was under obligation to listen to that.

But that also perpetuated frustration. So they're able to mend fences.
I think, even though the Blazers aren't contenders, we have
to see Damian lowerd through the lens of not this
upcoming season, but the following season, because he's not going
to come back this season with his achilles injury, and
so I'm not going to say the Blazers are going
to be a contender next year, but they could be

a viable playoff team. They have a good combination of
young players, and with Damian Lillard, he's going to be
spending most of his time around family and with his
trainers rehabbing, but he can still have an influence behind
the scenes because of who he is as a veteran,
especially because of his tithes with Portland. So what I

(29:34):
think it needs to be clear is that I don't
think it was about the money. He was getting paid
a lot by Milwaukee anyway, so much that when he
got waived, when I checked in with people around him,
like they made it clear, I don't feel sorry for us,
Like he is a status he thinks this is win win.
So you know, even though he's not with a quote

(29:54):
unquote contender, I don't think it's as eye opening only
because he's not joining and the team technically next season,
because you may as well pencil them now, because that's
what achilles injuries are. It takes you out for an
entire year.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Since you mentioned that, I don't know when we'll get
a chance to hang again, Mark, But have you been
able to kind of get anyone from the league to
give you some perspective on why we've seen the increase
in achilles injuries or is it just happenstance?

Speaker 7 (30:23):
Yeah, well, the league, not necessarily. But I actually have
talked to several doctors outside of teams that don't work
for teams that they're a little objective. Most now, there's
not a clear science to this, but most of them
have really clung onto the way the game is played,
the fast paced, the twisting, the torquing. I think also

the fact that players are you know, training year round.
They felt like those are all contributing factors. Ironically, you know,
there was one doctor I talked to that suggested, you know,
this shows why players should be load managed, and it's
a good thing. But there are more doctors I talk
to that actually push back on that idea that, oh,

it's has to do with the eighty two game schedule,
et cetera. Some of them actually thought that actually helps
you stay healthier because you're in a rhythm. You're used
to planning five on five as opposed to adopting you
keep the old classic car in the garage, you never
run the engine, and then when you finally do, it stalls.
So I think the bigger analogy, as well as talking

(31:29):
about the pace of the game, the constant twisting, think
of it to extend the car analogy, you know, using
taking a car out and constantly speeding and then you know,
breaking abruptly before every light. And that's that's what they're
equating to what these players are going through right now.

come back, and we want to you know, re up
with Paydum and Brandt and try to go ahead and

win another championship. And obviously they got some other pieces,
but him kind of spurning the Celtics, they go all
the way to the Lakers. Does it make them a
championship team? Does it make them right there with Oklahoma City,
Houston and Denver.

But he's exactly the type of player that you need
on Luka, Doncics leg teams. There's nothing wrong with that.
Lebron James and others. You need the three and D
energy guys to go out and muck it up, you know,
play the other best players.

He can shoot the three spot up, three point shooter,

you get in these nip and tuck series and the
Lakers are playing together for each other, not with all
