Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Oh, and I like an NFL veteran when NFL free
agency is just about to begin. But of course it's
kind of already started, because uh, this thing is.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Like a cup with a hole in it, Man, it leaks.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
And so we've been getting all kinds of information already
over the last week or so.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
We're gonna dive into that.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Adam Silver speaks on Tanking World, Baseball Classic Underway, and
a whole lot more.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I'm not a car guy. I'll tell you about.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
The analogy I'm about to make or why I'm saying
that in just a second. But the show doesn't start
until I'll say good evening to my man from Salam.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
How are we doing tonight?
Speaker 4 (00:41):
I'm good.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
I'm doing fantastic.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Like, I don't know where everybody is where they're listening,
but you and I are both in California and it's summer.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
I don't care what your calendar says.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
It's still light outside because the clock's changed and it's
seventy or eighty or whatever the hell it is wherever
you are, and it's summer, so happy summer.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
Yeah, it's beautiful, crazy yeah right, yeah, beautiful who in
the summer.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, like you know, why the hell not? Maybe that's
why it costs so much to live here. But anyway,
I'm not a car guy. And here's here's kind of
why I look at for example, Max Crosby, like a
Italian sports car or something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I get it, I really do.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
If that's your thing, then that's your thing, and all
of us, whatever sort of disposable income we have, you
get to put that in the spot where you want.
For me, it's kind of vacations. For others, maybe it's
it's cars, and then it feels wasteful to somebody else.
But here here's kind of what I'm getting at. I like,
(01:58):
to me the reason I'm not a car guy. I
drive a Hyundai Tucson and I love it. Like it
gets me from point A to point B. To me,
it feels comfortable inside. That's that's wonderful. If you get
like the Italian or the German or the whatever's going
on with your car, it feels really good to uh
(02:18):
to drive it around and get your places.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
And then.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Then you need new parts or you need service. And
I've I've experienced this before, and I'm like, oh, oh,
my god, that that that's not worth it. I'm not
here to say, because he hasn't played a game with
the Ravens yet, that Max Crosby is not worth it.
I just know historically, when you grab the veteran for
(02:44):
multiple first round draft picks, usually you regret it. Usually
you regret it. That's just that's the facts of deals
like this. So I'm cure he's had some injury issues,
He's never really played for a big time team. I'm
(03:05):
happy for him. I'm glad that he's going to have
a good quarterback and a chance to win football games
next year. And I do think right now it makes
the Ravens better. But us expensive.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
That was expensive, Yeah, but I think I think it
was worth it. I think both teams made out great. Okay,
Raiders acquiring two more first round draft picks to build
(03:41):
a team that needs to be rebuilt completely. I think
that they win that they just need more talent and
having an all world It's similar to the Browns right now.
What would you give up for good Miles Garrett?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Miles Garrett, you.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Know someone who can can really come in and immediately
change how your defensive front seven plays is?
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Is Miles Garrett better than Max Crosby. I think he is.
I think he is, but not by a mile, not
by much. Max Crosby is a game changer. He has
been since he stepped foot in the league, and he's
just been stuck in mud. Miles Garrett is stuck in mud.
(04:33):
And now you know, you get to really see Max
Crosby and in Baltimore with the other all pros that
are there, he becomes a different player. He was a
great player doing everything. Now he becomes a complementary piece
(04:55):
or a building block with complimentary pieces around him. And
Lamar Jackson at quarterback if he comes back healthy on offense,
and so now you have a Baltimore is looking like, yeah, okay,
sure we have our quarterback, right, we have our running back,
(05:17):
we have receivers and tight ends, we have all pros
in our secondary. We sharpen up and retool our front
seven with someone like Max Crosby. Yeah, so those first
round draft picks you would have been using to do
(05:37):
any of that, you get a plug and play player.
That's the way I saw it.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
I hear you, and like, I'll tell you one thing
that did catch my attention. Did you see the whole uh,
did you see the whole Jamar Chase thing, the Jamar
Chase reaction to Max Crosby going.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
To the Ravens.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
What he say did.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
So?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Jamar Chase is playing video games on a live stream
when apparently this all went down, and his phone give
a little visits and he got a text from a
guy named Joe happened to be Joe Burrow. Guy named Joe,
and the text from Joe apparently told Jamar that Max
(06:28):
Crosby is now on the Baltimore Ravens, a division rival
heard on the live stream, and I quote, Joe just
bleeping texted me Ravens traded for Max Crosby. No bleeping bleep,
No bleeping bleep brother, I'm bleeping highly pissed right now.
(06:57):
Oh my god, how do we this bleep go to
the bleep in division?
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Bro? Oh my god?
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Now, this to me, this may sound so stupid, but that,
to me is the most convincing analysis that I have
heard from anybody about the Max cross betrayed. And the
reason is not because it's from a big name player.
It's because of the jersey that player wears. You and
I have had so many conversations about the Cincinnati Bengals
(07:32):
and how kind of woefully constructed they are, at least
in my opinion. Yeah, and Jamar is amazing. I think
Jamar's worth tons, but he is, along with t Higgins,
for me, is the financial example of why the Bengals
are so disappointing. With a great quarterback and a great receiver,
(07:57):
and then another great receiver, Trey Hendrickson's about to go
play for someone else next year, and that doesn't make
any sense to me. The Bengals will not put attention
on either of their lines, and you can't win that way.
And it gets proven every year with the Bengals, and
they keep doing it over and over again. And so
(08:19):
when I hear that reaction, that's what it says to me.
It says to me that I'm a great player, and
I'm in this division and I'm watching TJ. Watt on
one team, Miles Garrett on another, and Max Crosby on
a third, and Trey Hendrickson's leaving.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
My team is stupid. That's what that said to me.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Yeah, but they did with Joe ass Joe asked him
to pay the receivers, so they did that. They Yes, yeah,
he did years ago.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
He said we need to pay t Higgins. I think, guys,
that's what he said. I know, but publicly, guys say
that about teammates.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Yeah, but what I'm saying is that's Joe Burrow. They said, Okay,
then he tried to come out last year and say
we need to pay Tray and they did a little something.
But all right, worst defense in the division by a mile,
(09:32):
by a mile, worst offensive line in the division by
a mile. Yeah, you can brant and get mad and
cuss as other teams are are are are preparing and
getting themselves better. The fact that the Bengals still have
a head coach and they didn't get into the head
(09:55):
coaching market baffles me. But that's what they do. They
hung going to Marvel Lewis forever ever.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
M hm, No, it was.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
It was very interesting going into and I think it
was Lee was with us producing the show this week
at the very very end of the regular season, and
he was like, man, because you and I were talking
about about Zach Taylor, and he's like, you know what,
there's a there is a scenario out there where he's
actually the only coach in the division who.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Keeps his job. And I sort of like Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I mean, sure, I see what you're saying, but I
highly doubt that he was right.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
He was like.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
That's the other thing that sort of sets the Bengals apart.
They're the only one in the division who kept their
coach after.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
This Year's the definition of insanity.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Yeah, doing the same thing and expecting a different result. So,
I look, I think Max is a great player. I
think that if you're going to spend a lot, whether
it's finances, whether it's draft capital, I think they're doing
it in the right spot. Edge rusher, to me, along
with quarterback and left tackle, those are your three most
(11:16):
foundational spots on a football team in my opinion. So
I don't say what I said to say that this
was a bad deal for the Ravens. I don't think that.
I just know that traditionally you regret it when you
give up multiple years of first round draft capital.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Well, I'll say it like this, they're I mean, if
they're in renegotiating Lamar Jackson's contract, are giving them an
extension along the lines of what they say they are
or what Lamar wants, And you know they're there that
(12:06):
you need a Max Crosby because you're not gonna be
able to get anybody else right, So it's a push
the Chips into the center of the table. They are
a better team with Max Crosby on it. Can they
regain their their offensive prowess that they've had in years
(12:31):
past with the healthy Lamar Derrick Henry still going likely
right that weapons on the outside in a division where
you know, we don't know what the Steelers are gonna be, no,
(12:52):
no idea. We know what the Bengals are gonna be,
so and we know what the Browns are gonna get.
I mean, so you're you're like, I'm Baltimore is looking
at it like, oh we can, we can do it now,
we can.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Go now as they should, right, I mean, I guess
the question to be asked is, if you have a
superstar quarterback, what is the correct way to support that quarterback?
And there are a lot of teams, especially in recent
years Bengals, Cowboys, They've decided the way to do that
is to give that quarterback a really, really good set
(13:32):
of receivers, and boy is it great for fantasy football.
It's incredible Jamar, Chase T. Higgins, George Pickens and Ceedee Lamb.
It's absolutely like Sunday or Gasvik for people with phones.
It just doesn't win football games. So I will give
the Ravens credit there. I don't think people draw a
(13:54):
straight line from pass rusher to quarterback, but they should,
like this is the better way to support a superstar quarterback.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
I do agree with y'all.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
You know why, because giving that quarterback more possessions, more,
you know, shots at the end zone, that's what it's about,
and that means getting off the field three and out turnovers.
That's a dynamic, an elite quarterback's best friend. A stingy defense,
(14:27):
a hungry defense. So I'm look, I I I applaud
the move. This sounds I do because the Raiders have
so many places that they need.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Help, almost all of them, almost all of them. That's
what's crazy about that football tape.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
So you got the first pick in the draft, plus
you got two more first round draft picks. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Well, and the more I think about it, I do
kind of to see your point, and in fact, from
the Raiders perspective. Another reason why I love the deal
I'll share with you here coming up next. We also
want to get to the quarterback market. We got all
kinds of stuff on NFL Free Agency. Matt Bergerram of
Sports Illustrated is going to join us next hour as
(15:19):
kind of a primer because it all gets started tomorrow.
As I said Adam Silver speaking on tanking, I got
Laker takes today. I got some Laker takes for you.

know who's takes you agree with that's mine, and then
those you don't. And I usually like to point out
Rob Parkers on those because that's that's that's what he does. Well,
(17:25):
my friend Rob Gosh. I saw another one from him
earlier today. Search five Sports Radio and YouTube and subscribe
this one. This one caught my eye, something about the
Warriors developmental process being exposed because of the success of
Jonathan mingle with the Hawks, and you and I had
a quick talk about this last week, and I like
(17:47):
Jonathan Jonathan Is. Jonathan is a. He's a high flyer man,
and he's an interesting young prospect. But here, here's what's
funny about this. Okay, the Warriors gave up Kaminga for nothing, right,
Christaps porzingis damage goods.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
He can't play.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Do you know how many games krisps Porzingis has played
in since becoming a Warrior?
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Zero?
Speaker 2 (18:12):
No, that's not true. Yes, the answer is two.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Including one last night. Do you know how many Jonathan
Kminga has participated in with the Hawks since the trade?
Speaker 4 (18:23):
Three?
Speaker 3 (18:24):
That's correct. So just find the Fox.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Just find the facts and then you can come to
your opinion. But if you watch games on Twitter, you're
gonna get caught.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
You're gonna get caught.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
It fine, like limited minutes, you know, getting legs, getting wind,
what whatnot?
Speaker 3 (18:57):
You know, you can box score, dive.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
He's shot at very mediocre, but some good blocks, some
good rebounds. I don't know, you know, ten twelve points
kind of a performance in like fifteen minutes.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
Okay, eh, are you feel about that?
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Not great yet? Not great yet, but I don't.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
I don't think Jonathan Kaminga has gone and proven anything
to be like egregious yet. Obviously those two sides weren't
getting along and so they moved on. And I don't
love the trade, but I neither one of them has
played very much basketball since then.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Neither one of them has played very much anyway.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
That's me commenting away on Rob Parker's takes on YouTube.
I'm just not on YouTube. I mean we will be,
but not yet. Anyway. Steve de Seger's going to be
along in a few minutes. Just to put a ball
on the Max Crosby conversation, I wanted to throw this
at another reason.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
It's so smart.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
I think for the Raiders to just compile as many
draft picks as possible is like a very keen awareness of.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
Time and space.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
The Las Vegas Raiders, no matter what they do, are
by far and away the fourth best team in their
division right now and will be for a while. Like
Mendozo or whatever they do could be amazing, it's still
going to take at least a couple of years. Yeah,
(20:32):
Bo Nicks, justin Herbert Patrick Mahomes, what are you gonna do?
So It really made sense all along for Max Crosby
to go. I thought they did a good job of
a smoke screen of like, no, we really want to
keep him.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Boy, This is a classic. If you love him, let
him go.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Max Crosby's career had no chance of ever ending up.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
In the playoffs as long as he stayed in Vegas
at you know, as he approaches thirty.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
Yeah, it this, I mean, this was this was about
to be a sad tale of well, it was about
to be Myles Garrett. Yeah, that's where you're trending toward.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
I still don't get that one. I still don't get
that one. Why did he do that? I don't know, man.
It could have got the money anywhere anywhere. A man
in the line to pay him had to be around
the block.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
I'll tell you this, Why did he do that? He
should have consulted Joe Thomas. Amen, he should have consulted
arguably one of the greatest offensive line to play in
that era, about just staying in Cleveland, well paid the
(21:56):
whole nine yards, unfulfilled to be that great and never
have an opportunity to compete for a championship? Is it
worth it?
Speaker 3 (22:14):
How old miles now old is he?
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Is he older than Crosby? You're right, he's thirty thirty. Yeah, uh,
I am such a fan of his. I think he's
just such an amazing player. The man needs to slow
down in his car. But outside of that, I'm I'm
such a fan of Miles Garrett and so yeah, like
(22:41):
I'm no Cleveland Browns fan. It doesn't no skin off
my back, but I just yeah, you'd love to see
him play some meaningful games.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
It'd be great to see him play into January.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Right, the sport you all played.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
To me, it just it would wear me out that
it's so brutal to be doing that and sort of
knowing that it's kind of like all for not the
second you arrive. I mean, Shador, I don't know what
he's gonna be, but let's let's be real, dog, were
you gonna show up next year.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
And do what?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
What are you gonna do? Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson
in your division?
Speaker 3 (23:20):
What are you gonna do? Not that you know what
I mean?
Speaker 4 (23:25):
Yeah, not what you need I mean.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Unless I mean free agency is just starting.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
I don't know if this is in their plans, but
they could shake up that division and sign Steve de Seger, brilliant.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
They could do.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
It my first contract.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Sure, I was gonna say, you're always talking about it
is no contract. I'm like, I think he's a free agent.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (23:48):
Speaking of free agency, that comes up in the NFL
this week, and Kyler Murray is going to be one
because the Arizona Cardinals have already told him we're cutting
you once we can. The Vikings, according to NFL Network,
our favorite to sign the Cardinals quarterback this week, and
running back James Connor at the Cards revised his contract.
(24:09):
The NFL's free agent negotiating window opens on Monday. You
may have heard the Rams acquired for a price defensive
back Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs tonight. The Rams have
given him a new four year extension, potentially worth one
hundred and twenty four million dollars. For a corner onto
the NBA news you mentioned Golden State Kristaps Porzingis will
(24:33):
be rested in Utah Monday. They're due to had him
back available Tuesday against the Bulls. Also, Seth Curry is
probable to play in Utah on Monday. Al Horford will
not be applying Monday due to left toe injury management.
Moses Moody of the Warriors out for Monday with a
wrist injury. As for the games in progress in the NBA,
(24:54):
well we do, it's just gone final. We do have
a Miami win at home against the Detroit Pisson one
twenty one to one ten, notable because the Pistons had
Kay Cunningham back on the court after Bruce quad. In fact,
he scored twenty six points. But the Heat win by
double digits twenty five points for Tyler Hero twenty four
for bam Adebayo. And at Toronto a Raptors win against
(25:15):
Dallas one twenty two to ninety two. Cooper Flag did play,
had seventeen points in thirty minutes of work. In LA,
the Lakers did not have Lebron James out again with
the Bruce Delbo and the foot arthritis, and the Lakers
beat New York won ten to ninety seven. They still
have Luka Doncic, she had thirty five points, Jalen Brunson
(25:37):
and the lost twenty four points, seven assists, seven turnovers.
Boston has Jason Tatum back these days twenty points in
twenty seven minutes. Today, Celtics won at Cleveland one oh
nine ninety eight, even though the Cavs had Donovan Mitchell
back on the floor and scoring thirty points, he had
missed the previous four games with a groin Andrey Cleveland
had won seven straight at home. The Washington Wizards this
(26:00):
season are sixteen and forty six, but they have a
chance tonight because they're at New Orleans. Somebody's got to
win this game. There are no ties in the NBA.
It's early third quarter. Pelicans seventy one sixty seven in
the league, and they're late in the first quarter at Milwaukee.
Orlando is ahead of the Bucks. Twenty two thirteen. Jannisan
(26:21):
Tenecumpo out tonight, sitting out a back to back situation
after the recent calf strain. Philadelphia's all star Tyrese Maxi
will miss at least two games with a sprain. Finger
looking ahead because it's going to be in that big
NFL date middle of the week March twelfth, Well, it's
April twelfth, when the NBA regular season ends, and all
teams will play that day. The play in tournament starts
(26:43):
April fourteenth. This was the last day the college basketball
regular season for the men. Number three Michigan beat number
eight Michigan State ninety to eighty. Ninth rank Nebraska in
overtime beat Iowa eighty four to seventy five, and eleventh
ranked Illinois won seventy eight seventy two at Maryland. We
already have started passing out tickets to the dance. Teams
(27:03):
are starting to earn automatic bids for the NCAA Tournament. Yesterday,
Long Island got one. They got an NCAA bid from
the Northeastern Conference just by winning their tournament semifinal in
that league. You see the other team that won a semifinal, Mercyhurst,
is still on the four year transition to being a
(27:23):
full Division I program. They're in the conference tournament. They're
not eligible for the NCAA tournament. So just by being
in the final, oh, guess what their opponent is going.
Congratulations to Long Island from the Northeast Conference women's basketball
conference finals today. Number two Ucla, having an awesome season,
just destroyed a top ten IOWA team, ninety six to
(27:46):
forty five. I don't know if you've seen UCLA play.
They start five seniors and the center is six foot seven.
Number four Texas beat number three South Carolina seventy eight
to sixty one West Virginia over TCU and Duke's women
and overtime won a conference title against Louisville. Ryan Blaney
took the NASCAR race at Phoenix, the Arnold Palmer Invitational,
(28:07):
and a playoff went to ax Shay Battia beating Daniel Berger.
John Rahm took the live golf event in Hong Kong.
And if you haven't seen some of the World Baseball Classic, boy,
some of it has been so exciting, exactly what we
got a taste of three years ago when they had
this tournament. USA Baseball, by the way, will be playing
again Monday night in Houston, and Pirates star pitcher Paul
(28:29):
Skens goes for the Americans against Mexico, and then Tuesday
it's US against Italy. Fox and FS one had the
game's quarterfinal for the US quite likely next weekend. Detroit
star pitcher Trek Scouble Saturday, in his one start in
the tournament, allowed a home run on the first pitch
and then settled down to say the least, and the
US dominated Great Britain. The Americans had won their opener
(28:52):
against Brazil fifteen to five. Yes, Brazil is fielding a
baseball team and qualified. Unfortunately, apparently they'd don't have a
pitching staff because they walked seventeen in that game. They
also gave up a first inning home run to Aaron Judge.
Logan Webb of the Giants got the win on Friday
with four innings of work. There was a game yesterday.
(29:13):
I don't know if you've seen some of the games
in Tokyo. The games and the crowds have been superb
and even better in Puerto Rico, the host country. Puerto
Rico was playing at home yesterday and wound up getting
two runs in the tenth to beat Panama four to three.
Puerto Rico is missing a couple of their major league
players because they couldn't couldn't get insurance to get into
(29:34):
this tournament, so one of the subs was starting. A
guy from TRIPAA, Las Vegas, who's from San Juan, Puerto Rico,
playing for Puerto Rico in San Juan and hit the
game winning homer in the bottom of the tenth and
if there had been a roof on the place, it
would have blown off. Man the place went nuts. He
(29:57):
went nuts. He was essentially hopping around the basis after
hitting it out. The left to end the game. If
he could have literally taken flight into the clouds through
the crowd, he would have. There's been some great, great moments.
We had the first ever walk off in this tournament
Ozzie Albi's and the Braves yesterday for the Netherlands three
run home or bottom of the night to beat Nicaragua.
(30:19):
Some of you may know that there's a relation between
Curisou and the Caribbean and the Netherlands, so some of
those major leaguers from there are playing from them. Some
of the major leaguers from well, like Michael Thompson's kid,
Trace Thompson. If you have a connection with certain countries
that Britain has a relationship, you're playing for Great Britain.
(30:40):
It's fun to see so much talent that we've seen
come through the major leagues in this tournament. We're just
getting started again. Quarterfinals next weekend.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Back to you, Steve.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
It's great stuff and I mean that about your work
and the World Baseball Classic, and I gotta tell you,
I'm just I'm impressed and surprised by the way this
tournament has sort of developed. I'm not somebody who gets
too far into a lot of the you know, just
kind of the world tournaments that are out there. I've
(31:09):
for years been a fan of. Like when my favorite
team house players go be involved in this, I'm like, augh,
don't get hurt, like just you know what I mean,
set this thing out, But this, I don't know what
happened here. This just hit the right spot at the
right time. And to both of you, I ask, how
(31:30):
the hell do we get even just a tiny piece
of this energy and inject it into regular baseball.
Speaker 7 (31:38):
I would also add that the first thing I think
of seeing this tournament is this tournament gives me everything
I want as a sports fan that I don't get
out of the NBA season ause there are so many
basketball games that we as fans look at and get
the impression, you know, it seems like I'm more interested
in the games this week than those guys are. This
(31:59):
is the complete opposite of that.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
I mean, from how many rants have I done just
in the last six months of like would you just
please care? That's all I'm asking. I don't need you
to be perfect, I don't need you to hit your shots.
I don't need I don't need any I just right.
It's like a relationship can you just care?
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Just care.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
It's like when you're helping somebody move and one guy
is faking helping move the couch.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
Man's well timed bathroom breaks, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Oh, anyway, Steve's great, appreciate it. I mean like, I
don't know, man, you got any ideas? How do you
how do you capture it? Just just one percent of this.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
There's a lot of games in the regular season, I know,
I know, So you don't care. You can lose forty
games early early, yeah, and make the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
You lose forty games in the first half.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
And so it's set up to you won't care until after,
you know, coming out of summer. It's set up for that.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
I feel like sports in general, a lot of takes
in the business that we're in whittle down to there's
too many games.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
As why football it is so captivating because you only
get a few, right, you only get a few of them.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
But there's gotta keep being more.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
There's already more, and there's going to be more, and
and that's fine, it's not too many more. But I
just always struggle whenever that's a take from someone because
I get it, and you might be right. But but
the owner like, there's never going to be less games.
Nobody in the history of ever is like, let's let's play,
let's let's do less, let's make less money.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
So in order to make it care or make you care,
it's hard to care for that loan one hundred and
sixty eight games.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
One hundred and sixty two hundred sixty two.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
It's it's hard to to care that long. It's hard
to care next month, right right now, the excitement of
the beginning of the season is there, but it's hard
to be like, come on, I know they play every
(34:26):
day and then they play at two pm. How could
you care if you're at work? Think about it now
now you ask me, of course, So I'm breaking down
the very few primetime games on the weekends. But during
the week it's not inside the NBA, it's it's it's
(34:47):
not Sunday night or Monday night football or Thursday night football.
It's two thirty on a Tuesday, eleven on. Yeah, it's
hard to care when you're dropping kids off. It's it's
hard to care when you when you're on a field
(35:08):
trip with six graders. It's hard to care when you're
in a meeting a conference Uh uh uh, you know,
a meeting at work in the conference room. It's hard
to care.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
That's true. No, it's true. I actually I would love
to continue this conversation. Let let's let's h and we
got three things coming up at the top of the hour,
so lots still to get to but not done on
that yet. We're live in the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
That's it from my Mark. It's Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
So this is the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
That is it. From Salam, I'm Mark Willard. It is
NFL Free Agency Eve. Tomorrow is one of the better
days on Twitter each year.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Be careful.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Make sure what you're reading is real. I'll leave it
at that. Be careful, make sure what you're reading is real.
It's one of those days. But we were having like
this is a conversation I wanted to have with you tonight,
like the idea of can MLB grab just even the
(36:27):
tiniest bit of World Baseball Classic energy. You're bringing up
some really good points and obviously some of these things.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
You know, like the.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
First answer you could come up with when I asked
that question is, well, GENI Mark, no, you could do.
There's too many games. Yes, you're bringing up getaway Dasers
games during the day. It's also a very regional sport
we like, we don't we don't have this poll to
watch out of market games like we do in the NFL.
(36:59):
And in this particular their case where it's the World
Baseball Classic and you may be, you know, rooting for
country or or or whatever it is. However, let me
let me throw this at you, because this is kind
of what I'm getting at. I'm not even talking about
so much. How like what level fans care? You know,
(37:19):
we're not gonna cry if our team hits a walk
off home or something like that, especially on Wednesday at
two thirty in the afternoon.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
But how do we turn baseball into a little bit
more of a party.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
And I'll give you one example of something I'd love
to see baseball really lean into because if you do,
watch highlights and I'll just it's the easiest example, but
watch a game in the Dominican for the World Baseball Classic.
If somebody homers for the home team, babies get made.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
I'm not. I mean, it's like that.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
It's that kind of emotion and excitement for the game.
I'm reminded of now Dodger's closer about two three years ago,
Edwin Diaz when he was with the New York Mets.
He had he was kind of the first really over
(38:23):
the top, big closer entrance. Everything would stop in the stadium,
the lights would go out, a dude would come out,
there might have been a horse, There are horns, and
this whole production. I never saw it live in person,
(38:44):
but it felt like it took damn near seven eight, nine,
ten minutes. And you might be like, that's ridiculously over
the top. Maybe, but it looked fun. It looked really fun,
as opposed to what we also get in baseball throughout
the year, which is cutaway shots from television network showing
people asleep asleep, like, oh boy, Bob, that guy's gonna
(39:10):
get sunburned.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Huh, oh my god.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
We gotta we gotta stop this, We gotta stop this baseball,
you know, like, thank you so much for the little
races on the jumbo tromp, thank you so much for
the bouncing ball, and we're supposed to guess what coup
it's in.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
Can we can we im freshen this up a little bit?
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Can we can we get can we get some actual
party people to come in and plan something for baseball?
Speaker 4 (39:39):
They just market it wrong as well. So my problem
has always been the face of baseball is an American
and so they don't market baseball in a way where
(39:59):
out side of baseball families kids are dying to get to.
You know, after the Little League, most kids stop playing baseball. Right,
whether you're going to the NBA or not, kids are
still playing basketball. Right. It's you'll you'll go play. You'll
(40:22):
play for as long and as hard as you can
because it resonates. It resonates like your favorite players are
there and you feel a part of it. It's not
like that for baseball. It's a little bit of a
(40:47):
of a disconnect when it comes to marketing of baseball.
It has been for a long time.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
I agree with that. I agree with.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
There's zero excitement in the marketing of baseball because it's
what's the game.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
It's right, and they're trying to get rid of that
with the let the kids play and all of that stuff,
show some personality, all right, we.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
Can keep the conversation going.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
We got three things coming up next Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
Oh, NFL free agency. Go to bed, Go to bed,
Go to bed. When you wake up, we're gonna do
NFL free Agency. I know it might be a little
harder to go to bed tonight because man, it's still
sun shining outside six o'clock where we sit. Whole new
world here we go into the second half of the
year in many ways, but yes, with NFL free agency,
(41:39):
Adam Silver threatening some new things finally in the NBA
to curb tanking.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
We haven't gotten that yet, and we will.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Matt Verderram from Sports Illustrator's gonna join us this hour
on the NFL usings as well. But at this hour,
this time every Sunday, Ephram and I do three things.
Let's go our three observations of the week, at least
through our eyes. And I can't wait to throw this
one at you. I'm not gonna be long winded on
(42:08):
this one. He from I want you to react to
this as quickly as possible. I can't with with Shank
Gilges Alexander anymore. I can't do this. We can't do this.
Adam Silver's over here targeting tanking. You need to do
this first. I swear to God, I am less offended
(42:30):
by tanking than I am by watching Shay and Harden
and a few others around the league play this alternate game.
Speaker 3 (42:40):
It's like a.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
Sort of variant of twister with a ball in your hand, Like,
do you do Shae even know that where the basket is.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
He doesn't care where the basket is.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
He just cares where your arms are so that he
can wrap his arms under your arms, then fling his
body to some other area on the square and then
look at the ref and go shoot two free throws.
I don't want to do this anymore. I don't know
what game he's playing. I don't know what game they're
(43:14):
playing that is not basketball. Fix that damn thing. He
is unwatchable period.
Speaker 4 (43:24):
Yeah it's called you know, he's a free throw a merchant,
and a couple of years ago, James Harden had perfected
that right. He pumped, faked the three come off, then
he literally wrap you up with him and go up
(43:46):
to the babies. I mean he was hitting, you know,
he was averaging you know, fifteen to twenty free throws
a game. That's why he lead the league in scoring.
When you're getting twenty points from the free throw line,
I mean, it's unwatchable. It's hard to watch, it's not exciting,
(44:10):
and you know.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
And they're done.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
Given these dudes MVP awards for this crap.
Speaker 4 (44:14):
Yeah, it's out.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Stop watching basketball on Twitter and in box scores. Of
course he scores thirty three a night, of course he does.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
How could he not shooting that many free throws?
Speaker 2 (44:35):
Congratulations for cracking the code free throw merchants, But it's
yet another piece of the NBA that I have no
interest in whatsoever.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
Yeah, it's tough to watch. It takes away from you know,
the dynamic, the nature of the game.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
You know.
Speaker 4 (44:56):
So it's it's I get it. These guys all trained
with the same trainers, yep. And so this is being
talked to eleven year olds, twelve year olds, and so
you grow up doing this. This is how you're training,
this is how you're preparing, and so as you get older,
(45:17):
you get more and more proficient at it. Come on,
and it's tough to watch. It is tough to watch.
Part of the game that we need to, you know,
fix talk about the Lakers. Lakers showed up today and
I want to talk about them because this is what
I noticed. Lebron James has missed the last two games
(45:44):
elbow and then foot tendinitis. That's what happens when you're
sixty elbow. I saw that injury live. Give me a
break anyway, go ahead, worry about your team.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
Okay, got nothing to worry about with that team.
Speaker 4 (46:01):
I got But but what I want to say is
watching them today without uh, Lebron James and Van Do
played a lot, you know, la Abia like Marcus smart Rory.
(46:23):
They played extremely well defensively, They played with an energy
I hadn't seen him quite some time. Luca was Luca,
He's gonna do his thing. He's gonna score. Austin Reeves
even got in there and and and mix it up defensively.
But that's that's the identity. That's what needs to happen.
(46:44):
And I was pleased to see them step up against
the Knicks and and and play the way they did.
It was it was promising. And I say all that
to say they don't or can't play that way. With
Lebron James on the court. He is a real defensive liability.
(47:06):
So when you have him and Luca on the court, defensively,
you suffer. You can score points, but you can't stop anybody.
And so some hard conversations are gonna have to be
had when he's coming down the stretch when we get
(47:26):
to the playoff series.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
What is what is suggesting this year? I get it.
He's gonna be off the team next year. Yeah, what
do you what do you do this? You bench the guy?
Speaker 4 (47:35):
No, you're not gonna bench him, but you may have
longer stretches with a defensive lineup in like you're gonna
have to. You're not gonna put Luca on the bench,
so you're gonna have to have long It'll be longer
stretches with a defensive lineup, and they gonna really have
(47:57):
to look at this thing.
Speaker 3 (47:59):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
Because I was impressed by the way their defensive rotation.
They played a little zone which they struggle in. Sometimes
they were moving, they were rotating. It looks good to
me today.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
One ten ninety seven win over the New York Knicks
held the Knicks to sixty nine points by the end
of three quarters.
Speaker 3 (48:18):
So I get what you're saying. I get what you're saying. No,
doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
All Right, here's my number two and this might be
one of my first NHL takes of the year. Whoa
Ephraim got a chance on Tuesday of this week to
do our show live at the Tank that's the home
of the San Jose Sharks. I don't know how many
of you are into the NHL out there, but this
(48:43):
was the first time that I got a chance in person,
not the first time, but my first time in person
to be able to watch young Macklin Celebrini.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
He is fifth in the league in scoring this year.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
He was one of the tournament leaders in scoring for
the Olympic Games for Team Canada, which as we know,
team USA beat for the gold medal. Aphrom he's nineteen.
Speaker 3 (49:16):
Wow, he's nineteen years old.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
And I don't care what sport you watched, Lebron was
this once upon a time? You know, when you walk
into an arena or walk out onto a field and
one person just stands out. They just it's as if
that little spotlight is on them, but there's not actually
any lights on. They just look different when they're doing
(49:45):
what they're doing. If you are a hockey fan and
you have not had a chance to see this person.
You have to see this person. He is already the
next big thing. He is going to be the best
player in hockey over this next generation. He does everything scoring,
his assists, his ice movement, his awareness.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
His vision.
Speaker 2 (50:07):
It's absolutely unbelievable to watch in person, because hockey is
so much better of a sport in person when you
can see the whole thing going on at once. But anyway,
just want to drop that in there because it's the
first chance I got to actually see.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Him live and he is freaking chef's kiss.
Speaker 4 (50:25):
Wow. Well, now I gotta look. I gotta go get
up here. I surely was it perusing the channels for
fork games.
Speaker 3 (50:36):
I will tell you here.
Speaker 2 (50:37):
I'm gonna look this up and tell you if they're
coming to La or Anaheim anytime soon. All right, all right, yeah,
uh dude, the dude, I'm scanning. I'm scanning at Anaheim Thursday,
April ninth. You've been warned, all right, I'd like you
to be there.
Speaker 4 (50:52):
Okay, all right, all right, all right, just send me
your Connects number and then you said Canucks or okay, yeah,
send me to connect on all right for the passes
and the you know, the ice seats and all of that. Yeah,
center right over, uh minus F one. F one started
this weekend the new season yep, not the show H
(51:13):
Drive to Survive, which is you know, season eight's out
now Netflix catch up, uh, But the actual uh season
started in Australia the Australian Grand Prix this weekend and
it was amazing. Now there have been some upgrades to
the cars and the cars are sleeker, faster. Mercedes clearly
(51:34):
has the fastest set of cars. Their engineers did a
phenomenal job uh designing the upgrades and so on. But
the the race was was tremendous. Now, the thing I'm
excited about is Ferrari is back in the mix now
because it went Mercedes Mercedes and went George Russell, h
Kemy Antonelli, UH, Charles Leclerk and Lewis Hamilton. So that
(52:00):
was a Mercedes Mercedes Ferrari Ferrari finish with Orlando Norris
and the McLaren rounding out the top five. Just by
today's race, I can tell it's gonna be a heck
of a season. These cars are fast. Shout out to Cadillac,
(52:21):
the first ever American team in F one. Excited about
that that's going to be amazing. And it was one
of those things where I was my wife and I
Will both glued to the race the whole time. Oh,
(52:44):
just glued to the race the whole time. The strategy
of it. It's a brilliant thing, I'm telling you. And
I want to say shout out to Max Verstaffen. He
started twentieth I think, and finished six. That's a lot
of work you ever seen you ever seen Talladega Knights?
(53:06):
Sure remember when Will Ferrell got the opportunity to drive,
and he was like, yes, with all due respect, Lucius,
I'm about to do some driving. And he just was
excuse me coming through right there were last because the
driver got out and went to have a hot chicken
(53:28):
sandwich and went to the bathroom, and that he just asked,
because somebody get in his car and drive. And you know,
Ricky Bobby got in the car and was driving it
like it was on fire. That's how Max from Red
Bull was driving. And we just kept we were sitting
and watching. I was like, oh, he's up to eighteen,
(53:49):
Well he's at He's at seventeen the whole race, the
whole race. He got all the way up to six
Lando Norris, who was an excellent driver, held him on
off and kept them at six. But that's how when
you watch things like that, you'll be like, man, this
dude just passing everybody. Right, it's unbelieve they're going to
two hundred and twelve miles an hour, two undred seventeen
(54:10):
miles an hour.
Speaker 3 (54:11):
I know he's a great he's a great driver.
Speaker 4 (54:13):
Good lord all right.
Speaker 2 (54:14):
One of my favorite things in the f one in
the in the Netflix series is when you hear what's
going into the into the ears of the driver. Oh,
you hear the pit and and and you hear the
captains in the back and they're like, uh, passes available.
I'm like, passes available. The guy in front of me's
(54:34):
going two hundred and ten poles an hour.
Speaker 3 (54:36):
That's what I would say, bet when you mean passes available. Yeah.
It's incredible. Man, I love it. I love it.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
You turned me on to it, as you know. It's
good stuff.
Speaker 4 (54:45):
And guess it's on Apple now. Oh so it's on Apple.
You can go, you can watch it. They have a
multi view screen where you can actually pick the driver
you wanna be in the car with. It's it's unbelievable. Unreal.
It's a great experience.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
Yeah, yeah, really really fun.
Speaker 2 (55:00):
Okay, my last one is this NFL free agencies tomorrow.
Listen to me now, don't get upset, listen to my explanation.
But if your team signs wide receiver Alec Pierce from
the Indianapolis Colts, your team done messed up. I'm not
(55:20):
about to say what you think I'm gonna say. I
think he's a wonderful player. I think he's a wonderful player.
But I can smell from around the corner when something
has been talked up too much and the price has
gone too high. You and I have made it very
clear over the last year and a half how we
(55:41):
feel about the wide receiver market in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
And if what I'm sort of hearing and feeling.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
Is about to happen, if somebody is going to go
north of twenty five or maybe even thirty or god
knows where for Alec Pierce, that is flat out malpractice
and a misappropriation of funds for your football team.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
I think he's a very good player.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
I think in a different system, with different players around him,
I do think he could really thrive. I even think
he could be a thousand yard receiver in this league.
He's not worth that. There's too much smoke. There are
too many teams interested. It's no different than being in
a casino and being and I've done this, hephim.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
This is how I feel about Alec Pierce. I love
to throw dice. I love to play craps.
Speaker 2 (56:41):
Okay, if I walk over to the craps table and
it says that the minimum bed is twenty five dollars,
we gon't go play something else. I'm not throwing that
kind of cash around.
Speaker 4 (56:54):
I'm not doing that dollar.
Speaker 3 (56:59):
We have.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Did you know give me I don't know ten to
fifteen dollars minimums? Like, man, I mean it used to
be five when I started playing. Yeah, yeah, I'm not
that twenty. But like you gotta cover the board. I'm
not putting three hundred dollars out on every.
Speaker 3 (57:13):
Roll like what I ain't Charles Barkley.
Speaker 4 (57:16):
What are we doing out money? Man? I love it
at all.
Speaker 3 (57:19):
No, I'm not playing.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
And so when Alec Pierce shows up and you call
his agent, that's what you say to him. Your minimums
are twenty five dollars a han, and we out, We're
gonna go play something else you see me in the
Keino Lounge looking for Christian Kirk.
Speaker 3 (57:35):
Okay, all right, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
That's hilarious. My last one is about uh parks and
wreck In Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (57:46):
Every year.
Speaker 4 (57:50):
There's a Winter Basketball League which is the season, and
at the end of that season, an all Star team
for each individual park is compiled and then you go
into this huge tournament two weeks, three week tournament. It's
the biggest tournament they have in basketball in Los Angeles proper.
(58:11):
It's hundreds and hundreds of parks. We do it every year.
I've been tasked to coach the All Star team again.
Last year we wanted allnt won the Valley Region with
something the park that I coach had hadn't done in
twenty years as a banner hanging up that'll be there forever.
(58:36):
I'm on it, my son's on it, the team's on it.
And so this year that was for minors nine and
ten year olds. This year I'm up at the majors
eleven and twelve year olds. So I got a group
of young kids. I have one twelve year old, the
rest eleven in sixth grade. And we went into a
(58:56):
went in to play a game yesterday and the team
that we were playing was considerably bigger. They had a
bunch of twelve year olds and thirteen year olds. If
you turn thirteen after January first, you can still play
in the Major's Division. And so immediately when my kids
(59:19):
saw those kids, the game was over. And I don't
know if you know, I'm a pretty hard nosed coach, yep,
and we got boat raced. We're normally beating teams by
twenty two twenty three. We got beat by twenty two.
(59:39):
And so I had a practice this morning with my
team and literally just broke down what each and every
one of those players means to me, to the team,
just re installing and rebuilding their confidence, because we got
(01:00:03):
a game Tuesday. If we lose that we're done. If
we win that we got a shot to get into
the bracket. We're in pool play right now. Top two
teams in your pool come out. Three teams in the
pool gotta go one and one. And so I want
to shout out to my, my, my, my, my, Major's
(01:00:26):
All Star team. I put them through the paces today.
They responded well, and I can't wait to see how
they show up and play on Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Send me a text will you, I will, I can't.
I like invested.
Speaker 4 (01:00:43):
Yeah, let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:00:44):
Let's freaking go. Oh yeah, I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:00:48):
That's why I don't have my voice sounds like this
sound great. I've been screaming at uh eleven and twelve
year olds the last Hey, hey baby, I've had my silk,
my share of love.

Speaker 3 (01:02:22):
We're gonna loop in Matt verner Ram.
Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
Of Sports Illustrated to help us get through some of this. Matt,
good evening. Thank you for coming on. How you doing?
Speaker 3 (01:02:31):
No?
Speaker 6 (01:02:31):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
We're fantastic man. I want to ask you first about
Travis Kelcey. So story comes out earlier today that he
would like to play again, which A surprised me and
B maybe it's not with the Chiefs. What are you
hearing on that situation.
Speaker 6 (01:02:48):
I'm not surprised he wants to play again that it
feels like internally it's kind of been the expectation on
the last month or show as far as I'm playing
somewhere else, Listen, it happens, does happen? I mean we
you know, I'm a Smith with the Cardinals, Joe Namas
with the Rams, on and on and on United Chargers.
It would be surprising to play somewhere else. That being said, listen,
(01:03:12):
I think this is posturing by Kelsey's camp. You get
a little more money, maybe get a bigger offer. Doesn't
mean he can't make good on the threat to go
somewhere else. But I think smart money says he stays
in Kansas City and he just takes me out to
a one year deal. Obviously, and it's you know, X
amount of dollars and maybe there's some incentives in there.
But the Chiefs this is a this is a I
(01:03:34):
don't want say it's not a rebuild, but it's kind
of a remodel of the house, so to speak. I
mean they are changing a lot of things up. They
have limited cap space. I think they want to be
very very aggressive in the market come tomorrow. Well, one
year deal sometimes are tough because you can't spread the
cap hits out. They just they are what they are.
(01:03:55):
Do I think he goes back to Casey, Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
Do.
Speaker 6 (01:03:57):
I think there's a world where the Chiefs say, look,
this is our line in the sands and if you
not want to take it, thanks for the memories. Yeah possible.
Speaker 4 (01:04:05):
What's the uh say he does come back? Say he
does sign a one year deal with and whatever that
looks like, what's the time that table or prognosis for
Pat mahomes coming back and being available for the beginning
of the season.
Speaker 6 (01:04:21):
So look, if you asked some people in that building,
they would tell you, look, we think he's going to
be here week one, and I think that's you know,
the general expectation now, to be clear. Week one is
exactly nine months from the day he tore thee and
he had Ahl serves me the following night, which is rare.
(01:04:43):
Usually guys made a few weeks or some swelling. He
just went and did it within twenty four hours of
actually carrying the Lakers. Nine months is an average timetable.
You know. Some guys are eight months, some guys are ten.
You know, there's a thought that he could be ready
to get on the field and be pretty much on
(01:05:03):
percent some time in August. That would be the best
case scenario. But I think generally speaking, the thought is
he'll be on the field come week one, as long
as there's not a setback. And that's always the risk.
You know, you're having a human being do rehab. There's
always the risk that something could take an extra couple
of weeks or a month or whatever, but he has
(01:05:24):
been attacking and rehab. Andy Reid spoke of WISTO and
a presser said that he's been at the facility seven
hours a day. I think their thought is that he'll
be there week one.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
Matt Verne Ram is with US Sports Illustrated. Also check
out his podcast, The Matt Verner Ram Show on Patreon. Matt,
I can't believe I'm saying that this guy has a sweepstakes,
but it sounds like he does. Who wins the Alec
Pierce Sweepstakes?
Speaker 6 (01:05:52):
Yeah, it's a weird one. Look, I think the Patriots
are one of, if not the leaders in the clubhouse here.
They need a receiver. They are obviously coming off of
a surprising year, very successful year. They're trying to at
least make sure they maintain that momentum. They've got forty
four million in cap space. I would argue that receiver,
especially if Diggs is out the door, is their biggest need,
(01:06:14):
along with shoring up that online probably finding little help
on the edge. Listen, Pierce is a tremendous deep ball receiver,
and May is austmith throwing the deep ball, So in
that regard, it's a great fit. The thing that's interesting
with Pierce is he is not a high volume guy.
He is extremely efficient. He's led the league in yard
(01:06:35):
perception into the last two years and well over twenty
yards to catch, but he is not you know, he's
not gonna go out and have one hundred cats. He's
not going to go out and be that guy who is,
you know, one hundred catches twelve hundred yards. He's gonna
have like forty five to fifty catches, and if he
does it, he's probably going to be in about a
thousand yards, which is great, but you know, you've got
to be a certain type of teams willing to throw
(01:06:56):
the ball down the field. Now his credit, he's done
the last few years an Indie with with quarterbacks that
outside of Jones playing really well for like eight games,
are not exactly you know, Hall of Fame bounds. But
I think, look, Pierce is he is in a great
spot because he is the best of a very shaky
market for receivers. Mike Evans is awesome, but he's older.
(01:07:18):
Keenan Allen is good, but he's much older. Wandel Robinson
is kind of the exact opposite of Pier so I'll
catch a million balls that he might do it for
nine hundred yards. Roman Dal's good player. I think he's
probably the underrated guys. It's not awesome. It's not a
great wide receiver.
Speaker 4 (01:07:33):
Crop Uh. When you talk about Indianapolis and what they're
able to do early on in the in the year,
then Daniel Jones get hurt. What is the what are
they doing? What in terms of the quarterback position are
they waiting for Daniel Jones? Is it his job? Are
they bringing him back or are they going to look elsewhere?
Speaker 6 (01:07:54):
Well, I mean they's lot the transition tag on so
essentially right now, you know, like any team go off
from contract, and the way that works when I unfamiliar
with it is if you know, let's just say the
Vikings were to offer from a contract, Okay, the Colts
can match it. They have to match the exact turns
that they do. He signed, he stays with the Colts.
Otherwise he leaves, the Colts get nothing for him. So
(01:08:17):
you know, whereas with the franchise tag, the team would
receive the first round pick, which is why I had
to after in my twenty five years, I didn't you
know their hope is that Jones is ready. But I
wouldn't be surprised if there's some point down the lines
that they move off Anthony Rich and maybe bringing a veteran.
It's backup, just give them motal insurance. It's listen, it's
(01:08:37):
it's a dangerous thing in the sense. Daniel Jones had
a fracture in his leg. He then tore his achilles.
A couple of years ago, he had a torn a seat.
I mean that that is a lot of who you are.
Those were a lot of serious injuries in a two
to three year span, and he down in the stretch's
not playing as well as he was prior when he
(01:08:58):
was red hot first eight nine to the year. But
they're kind of in a brutal spot because they traded
to first round Pictures Sauce Guard. Now like they're committed
at this point, there's no there's no going back to.
I mean, if they go back, everybody's fire by the time.
I mean, if they go back from the position they
put themselves in, like Baller and its site there are
put their house on the market, so they're all in.
(01:09:19):
They just got a hope that hey Jones is right
and he's healthy. And we can get him back rolling
the way he was first half.
Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
Of the year.
Speaker 6 (01:09:25):
But there's a lot of questioners. They have a lot
of free agents. The Colts have a lot of guys
who are said to destin market.
Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
Uh, Matt, it's gonna be a huge week. We appreciated
a little bit of time and info. Matt Verde Rams
show on Patrion is his podcast.
Speaker 4 (01:09:40):
Thank you so much, Matt, appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (01:09:42):
They no problem anytime guests.
Speaker 2 (01:09:43):
All right, there goes Matt and then here comes our
free agent, and that is, of course, Steve De Sager.
Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
He is.
Speaker 4 (01:09:51):
He's like, wait a minute, that's what you told me.
Speaker 7 (01:09:55):
I mean, you know, the free agent negotiating window opens
on Monday. I'm all for all right, Okay, the Rams,
let's go. You may have heard of Trent McDuffie. Let's
just say he raised some eyebrows for the beginning of
his career with the talent in Kansas City. He's a
new defensive back for the Rams now and tonight they've
given him a four year extension worth reportedly one hundred
(01:10:17):
million dollars guaranteed. The Vikings are favored to sign quarterback
Kyler Murray this week according to NFL Network. Once Arizona
cuts him cards running back James Connor revised his contract.
Arizona resigned kicker Chad Ryland. The Colts resigned kicker Blake Groupie.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational, in a playoff, went to act
Shay Battia. John Rahm took the Livegulf event in Hong Kong.
(01:10:40):
Ryan Blaney won the NASCAR Race at Phoenix. Christopher Bell
finished second. He led the most laps in the NHL.
Buffalo won its seventh game in a row and the
final was eight seven over Tampa Bay, Colorado in a
shootout beat Minnesota. Dallas won in overtime against Chicago. Pittsburgh
won in overtime against Boston. For the NBA today, in LA,
(01:11:01):
the Lakers did not have Lebron James out again due
to injuries. Luka Doncic with thirty five points and the
Lakers beat New York one ten to ninety seven. LA's
Marcus Smart was one of ten shooting from the floor.
Miami won its fifth straight defeating Detroit won twenty one
to one ten. Ky Cunningham of the Pistons, returned after
a bruce quad last week, had twenty six points tenn
(01:11:23):
assists in the loss. Boston won at Cleveland one oh
nine ninety eight despite thirty points from the Cavs Donovan Mitchell.
He had missed the previous four games with a groin entry.
New Orleans has just handed Washington an eighth straight loss,
one thirty eight to one eighteen, although Trey Young with
his new team seventeen points in eighteen minutes. Toronto handed
Dallas a seventh straight defeat, one twenty two to ninety two.
(01:11:48):
In progress well, Paula Benco of Orlando has twenty nine
points and late third the Magic lead at Milwaukee ninety
one to sixty two. No Jannis Antenekunpo is not playing
City out the back to back situation after the recent
calf strain, so this is the thirtieth game he has
missed this season. At San Antonio, it Spurs eighty three
(01:12:08):
sixty one over Houston in the third quarter end of one.
Indiana tied at Portland thirty a piece. And in college
basketball to end the regular season for the men, Number
three Michigan beat number eight Michigan State ninety to eighty.
Ninth rank Nebraska in overtime beat Iowa eighty four to
seventy five, and number eleven Illinois won seventy eight seventy
(01:12:29):
two at Maryland. There are conference tournaments already underway. In fact, Saturday,
the Ohio Valley Championship game was won by Tennessee State,
and as we mentioned earlier in the show, Long Island
earned an NCAA bid from the Northeast Conference just by
making its final. Missouri Valley Final was today. Northern Iowa wins.
(01:12:49):
It won five straight after a ten and nine record
in conference. But they're going to the dance. Summit League
is going on right now, and see if you can
follow this. It's North Dakota State against North Dakota in
South Dakota. Atlantic sun Queens wins in overtime in its
first year of eligibilities for the NCAAs. They are going
(01:13:12):
after beating Central Arkansas. Although in defeat forty nine points
for Central Arkansas senior Cameron Hunter Big South High Points
the winner. They're going to the dance with a thirty
and four record after defeating Winthrop. High Point went eighteen
to one in conference and in the Patriot League Semis
Boston University today won on a three pointer at the
(01:13:34):
buzzer and they play home games in that conference Attorney.
So they won at first place Navy at the Buzzer,
a Navy team that had won fourteen games in a row,
but seventy three seventy two the final Boston You against Lehigh,
and Wednesday's championship in that league at Georgia Tech fired
coach Damon Stademayer after three seasons there. They lost twelve
(01:13:57):
straight to end this year. Selection Sunday for the NCAA
Tournament is next Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
Back to you, Oh my.
Speaker 2 (01:14:04):
Aph, thank you, Steve, thank you so much. Selection Sunday
next week. This is the last few years traditionally been
a time where you uh, you know, kind of lose
your mind and get all excited.
Speaker 3 (01:14:20):
How are we doing this year? Big fella? They're twenty
and ten.
Speaker 4 (01:14:25):
I know they got to win the tournament though.
Speaker 2 (01:14:26):
By the way, San Diego State is who we're talking about.
For everybody who doesn't speak e from they.
Speaker 4 (01:14:30):
Have to win the tournament to get in. They had
a couple bad quiet one losses that they should have won.
And you know this, this may be the deepest team
that they've ever had, but you know, it took a
minute for everybody to jail, and you know, they lost
some games they had no business losing.
Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
Hmm.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
I noticed there was just like this normal march spring
in your step that was missing a little bit this year.
And I'm you know me too, well, I just I'm
looking at their schedule and and they've lost four of
six and I'm like, I get it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:06):
That's not something that happens very much. Yeah, it does
not happen very much, not for the Aztecs.
Speaker 2 (01:15:14):
You know, my uh, one of my stepdaughters is going
to Boise State. Now, oh, that was an amazing reaction.
That's the first time anybody's ever reacted that way when
I told him that, the hell was she does she
do that?
Speaker 3 (01:15:29):
Because she could, you know, because she went to college.
Like that's the applaud You're like, wow, should go.
Speaker 4 (01:15:35):
To Collegeoise State.
Speaker 2 (01:15:37):
I mean, you know, get about four apartments in Boise
for the one you're getting San Diego.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Good luck though, Well, anyway, I.
Speaker 4 (01:15:46):
Thought college was all about the experience, not very good
experience with Boise.
Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
Ain't nothing wrong with Boise, Idaho.
Speaker 4 (01:15:53):
You stop, go get some property up there, then.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
That's what she's doing. But anyway, not owning it but
renting it. Anyway, you get the idea. All right, We're
in the Fox Sports Radio studios and lots and lots
and lots still to do NFL Free Agency. Top of
the hour, we'll get to Adam Silver and what he
said about tanking. But I got Laker takes that I
(01:16:17):
brought to work today and I'd like to run them
by you. We'll do that coming up next e from
salam Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to

Speaker 2 (01:16:37):
It's the Fox Sports Radio Studios. Ma'am, Remember earlier when
I was like, I can't with shake Yo just Alexander anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:16:49):
I can't do it. I just can't.
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
There's nothing, I mean, super talented. Sometimes that's its like
if I had had a chance to speak directly to
shake Yill just Alexander James Harden sometimes you know Chris
Paul back when he was playing, I'm just like, God,
you guys are You're so good, You're such amazing players.
(01:17:12):
Why don't you try to score the basketball? Why don't
you try to shoot at the hoop instead of trying
to like position yourself against a defender so that they're
stuck and have no choice but to get looped into
your little foul game. And then you fall on the
(01:17:32):
ground and go shoot, like why play basketball?
Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
Man? All right, well, so here's here's my other one.
I'm not as annoyed by this, but it's getting there.
My dude. Your boy has got to stop. He's out
of control. He's complaining even when good things happen. Do
(01:18:02):
you notice how you're laughing? And I don't even need
to say who I'm talking about. You can't put your
palms up after every single play no matter what happens.
(01:18:22):
He seems to be complaining when they do call a foul,
as if he wants like an even more foul to
be called or something.
Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
Your boy, Luca is on the verge of losing the audience.
He's got to stop, dude, he's too good for this.
Speaker 4 (01:18:43):
Also, I mean, you're not wrong, he gotta stop. You're
not wrong, You're actually right. Yeah, I know, yeah, you're right.
Speaker 6 (01:18:58):
I know.
Speaker 3 (01:18:59):
I hate it.
Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
Oh my god, I do I hate it. I do
not like it at all.
Speaker 3 (01:19:10):
There was some.
Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
Like I tried not to watch basketball games on social media,
because you get you get a warped view of what
took place. It appeared to me that he complained last
week after missing a free throw.
Speaker 4 (01:19:27):
He may be of complaining. He may be of complaining
about why he was actually on the free throw line.
Oh no, I know, I know what you're talking about.
What actually, I know what you're talking about because it
was a lane violation. They came into the lane before.
Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
Lane violation.
Speaker 2 (01:19:48):
I've seen players set up a tent in the key
during free throws in the NBA. They don't call that.
They don't call that. Luca, God, what what is he doing?
It's really become comical. My son and I sat there
(01:20:10):
and watched the second half of the Lakers Nuggets game
the other night, and we're just doubled over laughing. I'm like,
it doesn't matter what happens on the court, Luca just
going run over the ref And I'm like, who, I
(01:20:35):
gotta give it to JJ Reddick. I don't know what
you think about JJ Reddick.
Speaker 3 (01:20:43):
Wow, I don't. You can't lose your mind at the stars.
I'd have lost my damn mind.
Speaker 4 (01:20:50):
Yeah, he definitely wants to slap some people.
Speaker 3 (01:20:53):
Exactly like Luca, you come sit next to me. You
want to talk, Come sit next to me. We could talk.
Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
Oh brutal, dude, You're never Oh boy, these these are
such great players. I wish they would, you know, play basketball.
I got more if you want it. We can talk
about Lebron if you want to.
Speaker 4 (01:21:24):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
But let's talk about Adam Silver and tanking because he's
finally talking about it.
Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
So we'll get to that coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:21:31):
You're listening to Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (01:21:34):
Well, it's been telegraphed like a bad pass. We know
that Adam Silver needs to address tanking on some level.
It's just taken over the NBA discussion here in twenty
twenty six. So he finally addressed it. He spoke big,
but then he also kind of said that he's an incrementalist,
(01:21:56):
which means whatever change is going to calm at a
slow pace. Kind of allah the way college football finally
got to a playoff through the years.
Speaker 3 (01:22:06):
So we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:22:08):
But a from as we broadcast live from the Fox
Sports radio studios, I would love to hear from you
on what you think about what Adam Silver said. He
talked about potentially addressing tanking by divorcing the NBA lottery
from team's final record. There has even been talk about
doing away with the draft entirely. Do you just make
(01:22:30):
everybody a free agent? But as you'd expect, it's complicated,
and I sort of felt the fact that he spoke
about it publicly the way he did in this moment,
as an incrementalist, like he called himself, it felt a
little bit just like a test the waters threat, little
bit like what the Chicago Bears did a few weeks
(01:22:53):
ago when they're like, all.
Speaker 3 (01:22:54):
Right, we're moving to Indiana.
Speaker 2 (01:22:57):
No, you're not shut up, you know, the Chicago Go Bears,
Like that was so clearly a threat in order to
get others to act, to me, to telegraphed. And I
felt a little bit this way here where he's like,
let's start by making a really big threat and then
see if anybody changes their behavior, which they're not going
(01:23:18):
to do because this is a huge draft coming up
with big time prospects. That's not expected to be the
case the next couple of years, so teams are gonna
ride this out. But I'd love to know what you think.
What do you think about what he said and what
about the ideas on the table.
Speaker 4 (01:23:35):
Well, I think in theory, you know, trying to strike
fear in those who are building their franchises with tanking.
In theory, that sounds good, but in reality, you're not
going to get rid of the draft. One of the
most you know, iconic and cherished moments in any young
(01:23:55):
player's career is being drafted. So mean to tell me
you getting rid of that. You're getting rid of the
pictures and the spectacle and the accomplishment these young players have.
If wanting to be a first round draft pick or
the first pick in the draft, you're just gonna get
rid of that. Some teams would want to lose to
(01:24:18):
have more chances at Now, what you can do is
you can say, all teams in the lottery get one
ping pong ball. That's it. You get one and we'll
really let fate decide. You spin that thing around, one
(01:24:41):
ball comes out, that's who's got the first pick.
Speaker 3 (01:24:44):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
Because what he's sort of like indicated was maybe we
just we put all the teams in there, and so
if Oklahoma City wins the title, they might get the
first pick. Also, well, that's gonna make people lose their
damn minds.
Speaker 4 (01:24:58):
Now you'll put all the teams in there. That's not
that's not the point.
Speaker 2 (01:25:01):
No, And and if you put all of the teams
in there, I think you're gonna have a hard time
gaining the trust of the fans because.
Speaker 3 (01:25:08):
They already hues, they already.
Speaker 4 (01:25:13):
Get the first year.
Speaker 2 (01:25:14):
And no, they'll only wait till there's a year like
Shaq or Lebron, like when there's a clear number one overall.
Then that's when the big market teams will show up.
So I think you have a hard a hard time there.
I love what you said, and I'm having the hardest
time figuring out why that's complicated.
Speaker 4 (01:25:32):
It's not. But I always say it's too easy. It's
it's too easy to to be to be true, right,
I mean, it is not rocket science. Just give every
single team, the fifteen teams in the lottery one ball.
(01:25:56):
You'll there will be no tanking teams. We'll go out
there and play. Either you'll make the playoffs or you're not.
You get the same chance as the you know, fifteenth team,
as you do as the ninth team.
Speaker 3 (01:26:17):
Like to me, that's where i'd start. That's where i'd start.
Speaker 2 (01:26:23):
Now, the hard part of this, you know, because both
of us are like, why is that so complicated. Here's
one complication, Well, you've allowed all these teams for years
to trade picks with protections on them, like you can
have a lottery pick unless it's top three, or unless
(01:26:46):
it's top ten, or just lottery protected as a whole.
That makes it a little bit tougher because that protection
that was put in place kind of came with it
a little bit, not a full but a little bit
of an understanding about what that would mean. Yes, there's
luck involved, there's always luck involved in the lottery, but
(01:27:09):
there's a little bit of an understanding involved with that trade,
and I feel like the value of that sort of
changes in real time. And those trades have already been made, but.
Speaker 3 (01:27:22):
This is going to take some time anyway, So like
it's not like I don't think they're going to be
able to do that for next season, although he is
threatening to do some things for next season, but I
do think those are just that I think that's a threat.
I would start there too.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
Charles Barkley said this a few weeks ago on his show,
and I wholeheartedly agree. Starting now, if you trade a pick,
you traded the pick period. If you trade it, it's gone.
You don't get to keep it because you got lucky
and it ended up in a good spot. That's a
very important thing that has to go alongside what you
(01:28:02):
and I are saying, which is that all lottery teams
have an equal chance.
Speaker 4 (01:28:09):
It's simple. If you did have okay, Cee's pick and
it's protected, say the Lakers, okay, trade it would okay,
see the Lakers if they're in you know, the lottery,
(01:28:29):
they get two balls, one and two. The one ball
is theirs. The two ball you can put okay, see
on the on on the ball as well, right, and
if it's protected, if that's picked first, our third, then okay,
(01:28:50):
see retains that keep it?
Speaker 3 (01:28:52):
No, you could do it, I guess is right. But
it's it's it is. It's moving the goalposts a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:28:58):
The trade was made under one rule, and then you'd
have a new rule, and it's kind of like, ooh,
the value of that changed. So look, I can't sit
here right now and tell you how far into the
future picks have already been traded. To a degree, would
there be some unfairness there? Maybe you're gonna have to
(01:29:19):
deal with that. I don't know how quickly, you can
do this. But that's Those are the two things I
would do, starting right now. If you trade a pick,
the pick is gone. And follow that with all lottery
teams have equal odds. Those are the first two things
that I would do for sure.
Speaker 4 (01:29:38):
And just like that, you solved the problem.
Speaker 3 (01:29:41):
Well you start. I mean, I'm not gonna like. I
think you're right.
Speaker 2 (01:29:47):
I'm sure it's just like anything else, you know, like
think about steroid testing. As soon as they figure out
how to steroid tests, then the users are on too
the next drug. So I'm sure people would figure out
a way to break that too, or try.
Speaker 3 (01:30:03):
But yeah, I think I'm with you. I think sometimes
we've over complicated this a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
We tend to add steps when steps are needed.
Speaker 3 (01:30:20):
We sure do, we sure do? What if the All
Star Game determinins are oh god, too much? Right? Right?
So that's where I would start. I don't know. Do
you feel like I don't even know the rules of this?
Is that something that you just snap your fingers and
(01:30:42):
do for this.
Speaker 4 (01:30:42):
Year they had a vote on it.
Speaker 3 (01:30:45):
Who's they?
Speaker 4 (01:30:47):
I believe the NBA Players Association, the owners.
Speaker 3 (01:30:52):
I don't know. Would the players Association have a I
don't know if they would ge, would they give a rip?
Speaker 4 (01:30:59):
I mean they would.
Speaker 3 (01:31:01):
I don't know how that changes life for them at all.
I do, you know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (01:31:05):
Yes, I do, I do.
Speaker 2 (01:31:09):
I mean, Actually, the argument I would make if you're
a player coming out of college, this gives you, in theory,
a better chance to be with a potentially slightly better team.
Speaker 3 (01:31:20):
Yeah, it does, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (01:31:23):
Washington right right, Like, if I was a college player,
if I was Debanca and you could tell me right now, like, hey,
there's a chance.
Speaker 3 (01:31:33):
That you won't go to Washington or New Orleans or
Charlotte or Sack, I'd be like, sign me up.
Speaker 4 (01:31:40):
Or I mean Charlotte might not be bad.
Speaker 3 (01:31:43):
Maybe not.
Speaker 2 (01:31:44):
That's probably do that. Yeah, they do have a little something.
Speaker 4 (01:31:50):
Cook, they got something going on over there. Yeah, I
just meant New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (01:31:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
And from a historical decision making standpoint, these are the
organizations where you're like, whoof, y'all don't know what you're doing.
Speaker 3 (01:32:09):
And that's prickly too, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:32:11):
Because it's okay to sound like the smartest in the room.
Sometimes well yeah, I mean it's okay for that.
Speaker 2 (01:32:17):
We keep doing it. But ugh, Yeah, this isn't this
isn't that hard. And I do whenever you see that,
like when they're okay, we're gonna have a public press
conference and talk about this, it's like, I know you're
doing that to dip your toe in the water, send
(01:32:39):
a threat and see how people will react. And I
guess maybe we're a part of that process. So there's
our reaction. No, don't give everybody a ping pong ball.
But all the teams that don't make the playoffs, yeah,
they all get one back. There's one caveat let me
(01:33:02):
throw this at there's one thing every time we talk
about this that I think about. There though, all right,
let's look at this play in tournament. Right, you got seven, eight, nine, ten,
and they all get to play in this little mini tournament.
If I'm the ten seed, which traditionally in the NBA
has a five hundred or lower record, ain't no way
(01:33:23):
in hell that team's going to go win a championship.
Quite frankly, I would be surprised if they even go
win a series. I know it's happened.
Speaker 3 (01:33:34):
I know that. You know the Warriors did it last year.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
Jimmy Butler's Miami Heat did it at a high level
all the way to the finals.
Speaker 4 (01:33:42):
Lakers went to the conference finals from the play.
Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
In But what would stop the bad team that's in
the play in tournament? If I'm Portland this year the
thirty and thirty four and I'm in that playing tournament,
wouldn't I kind of want to lose and go get
an equal shot?
Speaker 4 (01:34:04):
Well yeah, but that's coming down to one gamepose to yep,
February to April.
Speaker 2 (01:34:13):
It's good answer, that's true. Plus that, I mean, like
the embarrassment level would be quite high. Yeah, you know
those are those are very those games are paid attention to.
Speaker 4 (01:34:26):
Yeah, they are. You know what I mean by everybody
what exactly? So yeah, I mean like it'll fix itself
if you just put the guidelines for it to start working.
Speaker 3 (01:34:45):
Yeah, well there we fixed it.
Speaker 4 (01:34:50):
We did it just like that.
Speaker 2 (01:34:51):
Okay, man, all right, well, I'll tell you what We're
going to keep on rolling. Steve de Sega in fifteen minutes.
If you're a quarterback needy team, then I would do
this this offseason. I'll fill that blank in coming up next.
That's the from Salam. I'm Mark Willard. This is Fox

You search Fox Sports Radio in the iHeart App and poof,
there we are. I really wonder how the quarterback position
is going to go. It's not considered a great quarterback draft,
(01:36:04):
but there are a few teams out there, Ephraim, and
I'd love to hear kind of your assessment on it.
Speaker 3 (01:36:10):
If they're in.
Speaker 2 (01:36:10):
Position to get a rookie quarterback, like the Raiders are great,
that's what they'll do. But if you're out there and
you're thinking we're going to compete this year, but we
also don't really know exactly who our quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:36:25):
Is right now.
Speaker 3 (01:36:27):
I respectfully would like to tell you you're up a
creek like you were just talking about the Indianapolis Colts
last hour. That's a great example. Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets,
Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota sounds like they're poking around,
although they're not completely moving off of JJ McCarthy. But
(01:36:50):
anybody who is thinking, let's get a veteran QB in
here and let's see what we can do.
Speaker 2 (01:36:57):
Punt punting unit right now, because it like, just notice
the names that are getting thrown around, and you tell me, like,
just forget the if and maybe they'll pop, kind of
like Daniel Jones did before he got hurt last year.
Speaker 3 (01:37:13):
Like sure, maybe you get but does it do any
of these names feel to you, like, dude, if we
get him, just plug him in and we're gonna cook.
Does that feel that way with Kyler Murray or mac
Jones or Kirk Cousins or Tua or Geno Smith or
(01:37:36):
even injured Daniel Jones to the point where we're freaking
out getting ready to hand out thirty million a year
to Malik Willis, who I think through forty passes last year.
Maybe Wow, dude, call in the punting unit.
Speaker 4 (01:37:58):
Yeah, I don't let me go back to something you
said at the beginning of this Okay, you said this
is not a strong quarterback class. Do you remember last
year around this time, all the experts were saying that
(01:38:19):
last year wasn't a strong quarterback class, but this one
will be the one. Remember that.
Speaker 3 (01:38:28):
Yep, what happened, Like usual, life didn't go the way
people thought it was gonna go.
Speaker 4 (01:38:36):
Yeah, because god, people were punning and like, no, we're
not gonna We'll just wait and next year's class is
gonna be better. So are they saying that this year
that is not a strong quarterback class and next year
it's gonna be better because Archie Manning was at the
top of everybody's Remember they were like, oh yeah, if
you got the first pick next year, it would be
(01:38:57):
Archie Manning. Well, Archie Manning's going back to school because
our many realize that he can't play football in the
NFL yet.
Speaker 3 (01:39:03):
He can't even play it at college.
Speaker 4 (01:39:05):
But anyway, right, And so I guess it puts you
in a tough situation because you don't know what's gonna
happen next year's draft, of course not, or who will
be available or who's standing. Kids are staying in school
(01:39:25):
now because they're getting paid a ton of money, and
so it's got to change a little bit how you
evaluate what you're gonna do at the quarterback position.
Speaker 2 (01:39:41):
Well, I don't even want to take your comment, and
let's review what we were told that last year was
not a strong quarterback draft. I think jury like, you
can't tell yet on what's going on with cam Ward
because what's around him is just not sufficient. I'm not
(01:40:04):
super high on him, but okay, and then if you
do go back to last year's draft is actually shocking.
Clearly people thought the draft was so bad. There were
so few quarterbacks taken in the first three rounds of
last year's NFL draft. I'm scanning this this right now.
(01:40:28):
Do you know how many qbs were taken in the
first three rounds of the NFL draft?
Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
Six?
Speaker 3 (01:40:37):
It was five, and two of them were with the
last five picks of the third round.
Speaker 2 (01:40:44):
And haven't really you know Jaln Milroe to Seattle, right,
we didn't even see him, Dyllan Gabriel in Cleveland, whatever,
like that didn't look great.
Speaker 3 (01:40:55):
But I don't even know what I'm supposed to think
of that.
Speaker 2 (01:40:58):
There were only three quarterbacks who were picked in spots
where you're like, we're expecting this person to possibly come
in in play pretty soon, cam Ward and like, okay,
Jackon Dart, Jackson Dart. Who like Jackson Dart? Don't you
like Jackson Dart? I like Jackson Dart. And then you know,
(01:41:18):
at the back end of the season, I think suddenly
made people go, huh is Tyler shuck?
Speaker 3 (01:41:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:41:28):
Ah shucks?
Speaker 2 (01:41:29):
And he was early to mid second round. He was
the third QB taken, So that awful QB draft. Maybe
there weren't a lot of them, but I don't know, man,
we might have gotten three starters out of there.
Speaker 4 (01:41:45):
So what's the expectation of this one? Is my question?
I have not If that one wasn't supposed to be good,
right and we got three starters, what are we looking
at here? Obviously, Mendoza, is it uh with Adler's the
kid from Penn State?
Speaker 3 (01:42:05):
Oh, you're talking to the wrong guy if you want
like the order of this, But I can.
Speaker 4 (01:42:09):
You know, what's the kid from Alabama? Ty Simpson?
Speaker 3 (01:42:16):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (01:42:16):
Hang on right, Yeah, NFL QB kind of let's sure
the current rankings right now, Mendoza is considered one, Ty
Simpson is considered number two. You mentioned neus s Meyer,
He's considered This is just according to ESPN, Carson Beck
with Miami.
Speaker 4 (01:42:37):
He's played a lot of if you want experience, he's
played a lot of football. Exactly how many national championship
games can you play in? Son?
Speaker 2 (01:42:44):
That's and Drew Aler Cole Peyton from North Dakota State,
North Dakota State quarterbacks. What could go wrong? Sorry, BTSD,
I got you know what?
Speaker 3 (01:42:57):
What is that group? I have no idea?
Speaker 4 (01:43:01):
And is the group next year going to be better
than that? That's the whole You keep punting like a
lot of teams are punting on the next year.
Speaker 2 (01:43:09):
Yeah, but maybe there'll be something different on the veteran
market next year. And and by the way, I always
feel like there are some quarterbacks coming out of college
who can succeed in a certain system.
Speaker 3 (01:43:21):
Yes, if everybody you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (01:43:24):
Like we obviously you know an example, I'm gonna bring
up like four years ago, we could have gone through
this list, and how many names would we've said before
we got to Brock Purdy right, who's now a top
ten NFL quarterback. So they're out there. It's mixed match, blend,
find the right oc, the right team. They're out there
(01:43:45):
every year. They're out there.
Speaker 4 (01:43:49):
Man, this is funny. I just watched I'm watching this,
uh this San Antonio game, and they threw a lob
and the center went up to catch the lob and
threw it back in the air. It threw it, threw
it back to the three point line. She's owned the lob.
Speaker 2 (01:44:05):
YEP, he was about to dunke it, but he's like,
wait a minute, that's only worth two.
Speaker 4 (01:44:10):
Oh no, no, no, no, speaking of Dounkey, Steve, throw
it down.
Speaker 7 (01:44:14):
Hey, And yes, the NBA's game's blowout, we're not going
to be leading with that when you talk football. By
the way, it's already been pointed out tonight. If you
look back at the NFL draft of just four years ago,
these were the first round defensive backs in twenty twenty two.
Derek Stingley, Sauce Gardner, Kyle Hamilton, Trent McDuffie.
Speaker 3 (01:44:35):
That was good.
Speaker 7 (01:44:36):
The Rams do have their new defensive back, Trent McDuffie
from Kansas City and They've given him a four year
extension worth a record for the position one hundred million
dollars guaranteed. Las Vegas acquired defensive back tarn Johnson from Buffalo.
The Chargers signed fullback alec Ingold Ex of Miami to
a two year deal. Arizona re signed kicker Chad Ryland.
(01:44:58):
Running back James Connor revised contract to stay with the Cardinals.
The Colts re signed kicker Blake Groupie. NFL Network says
the Vikings are favored to sign quarterback Kyler Murray this
week and yes, he will be cut by Arizona this week.
They've told him that the NFL's free agent negotiating window
opens on Monday. Update from the World Baseball Classic. You
(01:45:21):
know USA is not playing tonight. They'll play Monday night
against Mexico. Pirate star pitcher Paul Skeens will be the starter.
Mexico is right now leading fourteen to nothing in the
bottom of the sixth against Brazil. Mexico with home runs
from Jaron Duranta, the Red Sox, Alec Thomas of the Diamondbacks,
and the World Series catcher for Toronto last year, Alejandro
(01:45:42):
Kirk with a three run homer attendance thirty six thousand
tonight in Houston. Earlier, Japan defeated Australia four to three.
Masataka Yoshida of Boston a two run homer in the
seventh four homers for the Dominican Republic today in a
twelve to one and win against Netherlands. Those homers included
law balls off the bats of Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero. Junior.
(01:46:04):
Ryan Blaney took the NASCAR race at Phoenix. Christopher Bell
finished second. He had led the most laps in the NHL.
Buffalo won its seventh straight game, eight seven over Tampa Bay.
To college basketball, the men's regular season ended today Number
three Michigan BA ranked Michigan State ninety to eighty, ninth
ranked Nebraska in overtime, beat Iowa eighty four to seventy five,
(01:46:27):
and number eleven Illinois was a seventy eight seventy two
winner at Maryland. Northern Iowa won the Missouri Valley title game.
They're going to the NCAA Tournament Conference Tournament Finals to
Queens in overtime to High Point as well. They'll be
in the dance as for the NBA game at San Antonio,
four minutes left Spurs one twenty eight to oneh eight
(01:46:48):
over the Spurs. It's been a show from Victor wembin Yama.
Pretty much everything you could ask a guy to do
on the court, he's been doing with not only the dunks,
three pointers following his own shot, and twenty nine points
in thirty minutes. It's yeah in four block shots, one
of which he seemed to take out of the air
(01:47:09):
and deliver to the person in the first row personally
in all one fell swoop. Portland at home leads eighty
six seventy against Indiana in the third quarter. Sacramento at
home is leading Chicago seventy five sixty three in the
third and the late game is late first quarter. Charlotte
up twenty two to twenty one at Phoenix. Already New
(01:47:29):
Orleans sent Washington to an eighth straight loss. Toronto rip Dallas,
which has lost seven straight, Miami and Orlando with wins.
Lakers beat New York one ten ninety seven, Lukadovich thirty
five points, Boston one oh nine ninety eight winners at Cleveland,
Jason Tatum twenty points in twenty seven minutes. Philadelphia All
star Tyrese Maxi will miss at least two games with
(01:47:50):
a sprain finger. And our golf winner on the PGA
Tour today, Akshay Battilla was born in Los Angeles, parents
from India. His family moved fifteen years ago to wake Forest,
North Carolina. This guy, still young, yet again a PGA
Tour winner because in a playoff he took the Arnold
Palmer Invitational. He had been five shots behind at one
(01:48:14):
point today and then made the charge and won the
playoff against Daniel Berger. It was the first playoff at
Bayhill and Orlando since nineteen ninety nine, which is apparently
before this golfer was born. We don't need to dwell
on that this was a signature event, which means twenty
million dollar perse just like a live golf event and
a huge check to the winner. He gets it at
(01:48:36):
age twenty four. He's into top twenty in the world
now and the Masters is next month. He and Berger
had finished at fifteen under par through regulation and then
a better t shot for the eventual winner Batilla, and
he takes home the prize. You know, Batilla with the comeback.
I gotta say also that Berger, and they'd mentioned this
(01:48:57):
on the telecast, has come through injury and was in
a position to win wire to wire this weekend, which
hasn't happened at Bayhill in a decade. He had a
five shot league going into yesterday. He winds up losing
in a playoff. Had missed eighteen months with a back
injury after the twenty twenty two US Open, sofered a
broken finger last summer. Does get the consolation of a
(01:49:20):
big second place check and a spot in the Open Championship.
Moves up into the top forty, so we could see
Berger be seeing Berger at the Masters next month. But
it's Akshay Battia the winner, and he gets four million
dollars for these four days of golf. Berger, the runner
up the difference of one playoff hole, gets about half
that two point two mil, and the two guys that
(01:49:42):
tied for third place one point two million dollars each.
On the Livgolf Tour, the stop was at Hong Kong.
John Rahm the winner for the first time in about
a year and a half. He finished twenty three under par,
a three stroke advantage. He had been tied with a
couple of golfers for the league going into the final round.
He said this one just feels like a big weight
(01:50:02):
off my shoulders. Played really good all day, big weight
off your shoulders.
Speaker 2 (01:50:08):
Okay, apparently stressful, his life, very very stressful. We'll see
how it works out. I'm rivet.
Speaker 7 (01:50:15):
My fingers are crossed. Apparently it had been four straight
second place performances. And you know, poor guy on the
live Golf tour they pay almost nothing, so why is
he even competing of that tour?
Speaker 2 (01:50:25):
Well, and now he's got that sought after win that
everybody holds in such high regard.
Speaker 7 (01:50:31):
I mean he lived golf Hong Kong.
Speaker 3 (01:50:33):
Yeah, Now everywhere he goes, he's a live golf Hong
Kong champ.
Speaker 7 (01:50:36):
That's going forgetting there. I know the trophy case, it's
probably going on the middle of the coffee table.
Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
Can't escape that anyway.
Speaker 7 (01:50:44):
A four million dollar check for winning a live golf event,
oh hum. And the guy who finished the second place
two and a quarter million, third place one and a
half million, even a veteran golfer. I don't believe I'm wrong.
This guy's over fifty years old. Lee Westwood finished tied
for or eighteenth place. All the guys that tied for
eighteenth get almost a quarter of the million dollars from
(01:51:06):
the folks that live golf, who will be back in
action in Singapore next weekend and then in South Africa
the week after that. Staying in Florida is the PGA
Tour Players Championship is next weekend. Then the vells Bar
the Master's Tournament at Augustus starts April the ninth.
Speaker 3 (01:51:22):
Back to you, quick question for you both, How exciting
is winning something like Steve just mentioned a trophy.
Speaker 2 (01:51:36):
What if you already had a house full of trophies,
would that trophy still be? Like we talked so much
about these live victories, right, I think four million dollars?
How exciting is four million dollars when you were given
three hundred million.
Speaker 3 (01:51:52):
Just to be there?
Speaker 7 (01:51:53):
I think it's like Lebron James life. He just wants
to keep adding the millions because he just wants to
buy a team.
Speaker 3 (01:51:59):
Sure, and like I get it. I rich people still
like money and that's fine. There's no I'm not.
Speaker 7 (01:52:04):
I'm reading between the lines on this quote from John
ram I think he just wanted to finish first again, yep.
I think it's as simple as that.
Speaker 2 (01:52:12):
Like from when you get a million dollars, does it
even register anymore.
Speaker 4 (01:52:18):
It registers.
Speaker 7 (01:52:19):
He from takes the money out of his pocket. One million,
two million, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:52:22):
Exactly, look at that. Don't let it fall out of
your pocket.
Speaker 4 (01:52:25):
Man, I'm rich and family and love.
Speaker 3 (01:52:28):
Yes, you are there, you go.
Speaker 7 (01:52:29):
Yes, you are more important than any trophy.
Speaker 4 (01:52:32):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:52:32):
So, but what if you got more love?
Speaker 4 (01:52:34):
Like?
Speaker 3 (01:52:34):
Would you be like love?
Speaker 4 (01:52:35):
No, we can leave more love. We need we all
need more love.
Speaker 2 (01:52:39):
That's true, that's true. But what if, like I gave
you five dollars, would you be like yes? Because isn't
that what four million is?
Speaker 4 (01:52:48):
John Rob No, I mean you gave me five dollars.
I'm like, good, I can get this to my son
for his lunch snacks that he asks for five dollars
every single day.
Speaker 3 (01:53:00):
How do you handle that?
Speaker 4 (01:53:00):
By the way, most of the time I say yes.
Sometimes I'm like no, man, get out of here.
Speaker 3 (01:53:07):
I know it.
Speaker 4 (01:53:07):
Take snacks from home, the ones we buy.
Speaker 3 (01:53:09):
We You're okay.
Speaker 2 (01:53:11):
You know my youngest son is right in the age
group of your sons. I'm gonna share this story with
you right now, no joke with the daylight savings time.
My son twelve years old. He just turned twelve earlier
or last month, it is seven forty Pacific time right now.
He has been on our driveway with a lemonade stand
(01:53:32):
set up for four hours.
Speaker 4 (01:53:36):
Yes, I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:53:39):
For how much do you think he made? Because I
just last commercial break, I just ran out to him like, how.
Speaker 3 (01:53:44):
Are we doing?
Speaker 7 (01:53:44):
Fifty cents?
Speaker 4 (01:53:46):
I say, I say to well, how much is it
going for?
Speaker 2 (01:53:50):
Okay, so a couple I think he's got, and he
got all kinds of deals going.
Speaker 3 (01:53:54):
Man. I think the lemonade is two dollars.
Speaker 4 (01:53:58):
Oh my goodness, he's got it's a big cup.
Speaker 3 (01:54:01):
This is a red solar cup.
Speaker 2 (01:54:03):
He's got bags of chips are going for two dollars,
but the chips are like you know, it's maybe one
bag for two, two bags for three kind of a thing.
And then he's got sticks of gum out there for
fifty cents, but you could buy one of the whole
gum boxes for ten dollars if you want.
Speaker 3 (01:54:26):
Something like that.
Speaker 4 (01:54:28):
Okay, I'd say he's out there for four hours. I'd
say he's made about twenty two dollars.
Speaker 2 (01:54:34):
You're pretty damn close, brother, that's about right, yep. I
think he was at about I think he was at
about twenty one. Yeah, However, it's actually seventeen because Dad
went out there and went, remember yesterday when I happened
to go get more lemonade at the store? Making profits? Now,
and your product comes out of your profits, you owe
(01:54:59):
me four dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
So I think he's made seventeen dollars.
Speaker 7 (01:55:03):
Well, the realities of the business life hitting right there.
Speaker 2 (01:55:07):
Man, hourly wages is not great, but at twelve seventeen dollars. Now,
tomorrow when he asks for five dollars for snacks, what's
my answer.
Speaker 4 (01:55:18):
Where's your money?
Speaker 7 (01:55:21):
There's your money to sell them for ten next weekend. Therefore,
it's all business in his head.
Speaker 3 (01:55:29):
Now, it's all business. I don't know what happened. I'm like, buddy,
what are you saving for? He's like, I just want money.
Speaker 4 (01:55:37):
I'm like, my god, I just want to cush I
just want to cushion.
Speaker 2 (01:55:41):
That's right, as opposed to his big brother and sister,
who I'm like reminiscing because fifteen years ago, you know,
twelve years ago, they went out front with a table
to do a lemonade stand, and I asked him, I said,
how much would you like to charge?
Speaker 3 (01:55:54):
And they said, we would like to charge.
Speaker 2 (01:55:56):
Nothing free lemonade, and they wrote that all over pieces
of paper and hung it all over the block, free lemonade.
Speaker 3 (01:56:06):
Guess what they're playing chess?
Speaker 2 (01:56:08):
Because what do you think people walked by and saw
the cute little free lemonade kids.
Speaker 3 (01:56:13):
What do you think they did?
Speaker 4 (01:56:15):
Timtom?
Speaker 3 (01:56:16):
They said, here's the twenty you cute little kids. Wow,
they made an ungodly amount of money.
Speaker 4 (01:56:25):
Man, you got some geniuses over there.
Speaker 3 (01:56:28):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:56:29):
I don't know if they were ahead of the game
or not, if they just got lucky, but whatever.
Speaker 7 (01:56:32):
So the kids are paying down the interest on the house, now, pretty.
Speaker 4 (01:56:35):
Sure that's what you're saying. Well, we're saying is Mark
lives an that fluent neighborhood. That's all I know. That's
what I got out of this whole thing.
Speaker 2 (01:56:42):
So thrilled that you don't think I own a house.
That's the qu se crub I ever heard in my life.

Speaker 2 (01:57:04):
We sit here in the Fox Sports radio studios. Oh
and by the way, I have an update. The the
sun has expired here in the west, and so we
have a final tally on the lemonade stand. And there
was a buzzer beater young man was out front packing
(01:57:29):
up and somebody who does the normal thing that people
do when they walk by a lemonade say.
Speaker 3 (01:57:34):
Oh, gosh, I don't know any cash with me? Oh
come back.
Speaker 2 (01:57:39):
Then they usually don't, but someone did, so we can
update the total from seventeen to nineteen.
Speaker 3 (01:57:47):
Ephraim nineteen, Yeah, thineteen. That's that's the final tally. Nice
not bad for nice sitting on your driveway.
Speaker 2 (01:58:00):
But that game that Steve was talking about, the final
tallly of that Spurs Rockets game one forty five, Remember
when the Rockets were good at defense? One forty five
to one twenty wem ben Yama is a plus twenty seven.
(01:58:20):
The problem he goes nine to thirteen from the field
twenty nine points, eight rebounds, four blocks, does not turn
the ball over, not once. I love this Spurs team.
I think they're ahead of schedule. Meantime, Houston Rockets, something's missing.
Remember last year they were the two seed. They got
(01:58:42):
knocked out in seven games by the Warriors. Not your
average seven seed obviously, but everyone said the same thing
about wow, this team, they're long, they played great defense.
If they just had that end of the game score,
that veteran presence that they could hand the ball to
(01:59:04):
and lean on, then they're a finished product. So they
went got Kevin Durant and I've watched them a lot
in the last couple of weeks. What do you see, man,
Something is still not right.
Speaker 4 (01:59:16):
I don't think they have any leadership. We know Kevin
Durant is not a leader when it comes to that.
They got a bunch of young kids who can really play,
real athletic but there's no you know who was supposed
to be the leader.
Speaker 3 (01:59:34):
Kevin Durant, No, well, Dylan Brooks.
Speaker 4 (01:59:38):
Nope, he hasn't played because he got hurt. Came from Toronto.
Fred van Vliet, yep, that was supposed to be the leader. Yeah, yeah,
(01:59:59):
I miss going point. And so they don't really have
an identity.
Speaker 2 (02:00:03):
Well, and there's also all that stuff that we don't
really know about, right, which is like that burner account
stuff just up and went away. Yeah, but I would
when he didn't deny it when given the opportunity.
Speaker 3 (02:00:18):
I'm like, okay, so that's a confirmation. And how do
you think that landed in the locker road?
Speaker 4 (02:00:23):
Told you it didn't play well in locker room at all.
Speaker 3 (02:00:34):
At all? Didn't play well at all? Then I'm sure
it didn't. How would it, you know? So it's good
observation on your part. And the Houston Rockets, who right
now are currently they've moved down, they fell behind Minnesota.
They're a half game out there, four seed right now.
(02:00:58):
I I do not see them as much.
Speaker 4 (02:01:01):
Of a of a threat, and I you know, I
want doesn't either.
Speaker 2 (02:01:07):
Yeah, exactly that that My dog is saying that that
that that's what she thinks of the Rockets.
Speaker 3 (02:01:14):
She thinks they are missing the doll. Get them, no doll.
Getting all right man.
Speaker 2 (02:01:21):
NFL free agency starts tomorrow, and when we get together
