Speaker 1 (00:10):
Just do it all right, Hoverer promised means the weekend
is here.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
This is our bonus.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Pod Covino and Rent from Fox Sports Radio two to
four out here on the West side, five to seven
on the East Steve Covino, Rich Davis, I hope you're
having an.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I don't know, be sort of week.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I think you're gonna wear your Taylor Swift Stevie Knicks
T shirt that I'm sure every random person's buying now.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Hell no, but I'll rock the Knicks colors and represent
some Mexican soccer because it's also World Cup weekend. You
got your Stanley Cup Final, NBA Finals. What a great
time to be alive. What a company, in fact, such
a country. We're going to talk about the things that
make America special because all these visitors are here.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
International travelers, foreigners from all lands are making their observations
about us, and some of them are hilarious.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, so we're going to get to that sports daughters
and the pranks that they're pulling on.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Our heroes daughters.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
But yeah, we're still recovering from the Knicks. What a week,
What a game. We talked a lot about it on
Fox Sports Radio. If you don't check our podcast, please
do against search Covino and Rich wherever you stream.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
But thanks for being here on over promise. Isn't a
wild How the Knicks?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
I mean, they seem like a team of destiny, but
two simple plays could have changed the whole complexity of
the series.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Like all right, game two.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
I know these are what ifs, but if Wemby makes
that jump shot, they win last night. If Fox dribbles
it out and gets fouled, yeah, they could be up
Ice one.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Like I've always said, leave the what ifs for Scott's
stepping creed. Okay, good one, Yeah you like them? Well anyway,
let's get it going.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
What a game? What a Country? And we do this
on Thursdays.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
You might be watching on a Friday or Saturday or whatever,
but we do this on Thursday. So it's fun to
throw it back and reminisce every once in a while.
And I saw something that blew my mind. Because Rich
and I have been doing this show for so many years.
We thought we saw it all, we remembered it all,
we reminisced about everything, and it's always fun to unlock
some memories.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
And I think we got one for it.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
There's nothing better than Oh my god, I would never
have remembered that for the rest of my life if
you didn't bring it up.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
And I think we might have one.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
So we're gonna unlock some kids sports memories, and the
one we always recalls when we went to the supermarket
with our moms and dads or whatever, and on the
way out, you would beg your.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Parents, d dad never went to the supermarket. I knew
you were trying to be right. I know you were
trying to be politically corrected. Yo, I don't think my
dad knew where the supermarket was. You Mom went to
the supermarket, get out of here.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Dad would be at home, but he you know, he'd
grill and hose down the driveway whatever, But yeah, what
a waste of water. We'd go there with our moms
and we'd beg mom to rummage through her purse for
a quarter just to get that little plastic football helmet.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
You guys remember this, right, of course.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
And the crazy part was some of the shittiest teams
when we were kids ended up being good teams, Like
I remember the Packers and the Colts.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
There were ones that you did not want.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
It so funny you see the Coults, because on this
picture here look right there on the top that Colts went.
If you got that one, you're like, ah, you didn't
want that. You wanted the Cowboys, or you know, coming
from New York, New Jersey, want the Giants or something
like that. An the Colts was like the Weeket or
the Browns.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
You can get a memory that just got unlocked. I
had every team and the last one that took me
forever to get I must have had my grandparents and
mom quarter after quarter after quarter. The Falcons finally got
that red Falcon's helmet from the eighties.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
It was tough to the collect of all no shit, right,
and I bet you they were worth little something something nowadays.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
But yeah, you remember that. Everybody remembers those.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
There was a stage though, where they came assembled, and
then you assembled them put the sticker on at one
point too.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
But here's the doozy.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
When it came to going to the supermarket and getting
those helmets, you would have the bubblegum machines. You'd have
the guts, the chick lits, the little like fruit remember
those like hard candy fruit things.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Those bleeps, those powdery bleeps, so they look like Saturn
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Yeah. Nos, But there was another machine, another vending machine
that you may have forgotten about. And our producer Danny
g of Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Radio sery this. I was like, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I think every sports fan of our era definitely had
these at one point in their life. Spot producer of
Over promised, please show them what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
This.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Wellm ever told you not to spend all your money
on these sticker machines, then she might owe you an apology.
It turns out they were an absolute gold mine back
in the mid eighties. You'd put a quarter in one
of these and get a sticker or two in a
little piece of cardboard. And the NBA Players Association used
these machines to market their stars. But unlike the Fleer
cards that were made just a year or two later,
(04:55):
these stickers were mostly stuck on binders, walls, and notebooks,
which has made them exceptionally rare today, especially when you
compare them to those Fleer cards. According to Jim Ray,
although over fifty thousand of this card had been graded,
a mere two hundred and seventy of the Prism jewel
sticker have been And remember the sticker actually predates the
card as well. So do you want to know what
(05:15):
this MJ sticker is worth? Yeah, In twenty twenty one,
this PSA eight copy of the sticker became the most
expensive copy ever when it sold for over fifty three grand.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Third stage, we get to find.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
The whole full set is worth well over fifty thousand dollars.
But I totally remember pushing those coins in, pulling it
out that little cardboard opening it up.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
You're like, oh, yeah, you needed.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
A little extra pull because remember you're pulling a cardboard
piece out of the machine. So you push the quarters
in and you could feel it almost. But you remember
these Oh yeah, I remember the NBA ones as much
as there was a time where they had NFL like
shiny logos like that, you know that sparkly, you know, metallic,
(05:59):
but it was like a forty nine ers helmet, Jets, Giants,
you know, Cowboys, Falcons, whatever, but it was football helmets
as well, So it was fantastic.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Those Prism stickers totally unlocked the memory. It was a
great way to get to know other players and NBA stars.
NFL stars totally forgot about those, remember tho.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
It was a great mystery because maybe you had to
undo the cardboards like what I.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Guess, absolutely So it got us thinking about other things
that I think most of us remember but we never
talk about or think about. Maybe it'll unlock more kids
sports memories like this one. Very random. But if you
went to like a helmet day back in the eighties,
early nineties, in the late nineteen hundreds, like free Helmet Day,
you always got the helmet, but always had this adjustable,
(06:44):
this plastic adjustable strap.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
It was the worst round adjustable strap, John Oliver.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
And you have to snap it in the top but
always fall out and you always have to adjust it.
You guys, remember those freebie helmets that you would want
they you know, then they stopped putting that in.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
They just put natros in the help.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
But for a while when they would have helmet Day,
it would be that adjustable flap yo Gary Carter style.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Yeah right, John, John Olrood style. Like you said, let
me give you another one. If we all collected baseball cards,
football cards, all cards for that matter. I remember thinking
the Holy Grail was Beckett's book. I trusted Beckett. I
was like this guy must know, dude, you'd go to
a card show with your Beckett book under your arm
(07:28):
on standby. But the Beckett book, the baseball book was legit.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
You know, an old guy would go to otb with
like rolled up newspaper under his arm. I would go
to baseball card shows with my Beckett book.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Like I was, you know, and by the way, a dealer.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
It's a memory rich and I totally share, and I'm
sure a lot of you do too. The cart when
the card show was in town or something. Your dad
would take your man. Those were the days, Am I right?
Speaker 3 (07:52):
You remember investing We've joked about this before, but investing
in the wrong guy or card like I got twenty
Greg Jeffries or Todd Van Poppols. Or I remember your
Yankee pitcher that hurt his hands in a bar fight.
Brian Taylor. Oh yeah, I remember there were a stadium
club that I was like, I gotta get a bunch
of those.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yep. Nothing.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
So another one that you guys might remember or maybe
you forgot. How about sports erasers when you were a kid,
but specifically one.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Cavino brought this one up and I totally forgot it existed.
It was the soccer ball that came in pieces.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
The World Cup is here were pumped about soccer. We're
welcoming visitors and foreigners and foreign relatives. This one specifically,
I had them in Green I had them, and Ran
I had those white ones.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
I had those so.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Many times throughout my childhood, those soccer ball eraser things.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I don't know, you know, just you unlocked another thing
for me. Spot.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
You don't need to look this up, because I've had
those different erasers as well.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
I had all these.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Do you remember if you would go to your local
store sometimes they would have the different football team pencils. Yeah,
like I feel like that was another thing, except I
always had the football team pencils.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Did you have the football team sheets and curtains like
the comforter?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
I had a comfortable helmets or whatever. I had had
a comforter and matching curtains in my childhood room.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
We all had the same shit. I had Mono.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
It was bed sheets, and I guarantee someone else knows
what I'm talking about. It was bed sheets with matching curtains,
and it was generic baseball cards. It was a generic
baseball card like print and that was what I had.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Got rid of my shirttails sheets shirt for my Star
Wars sheets for the helmets for the comforter. So because
we're all pumped about soccer, I remind you of that
famous eraser that maybe you got at.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
School on a little holiday boutique or something.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
That's the old soccer ball that's I called the Peley
soccer ball when it was white and black, like when
people look at a soccer ball that way.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
And uh, you know, since soccer's all the buzz right now,
that brings us to World Cup day.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
We're here, World Cup is going down, and I thought
this was hilarious. We talked about it on Fox Sports
Radio the other day, but I thought it was worth
expanding upon all these international travelers, kind foreign folks that
are visiting our country for the worst.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Time, always welcoming to us. Right now it's our chance
to be welcoming right back.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
We're talking like New York, California, Alabama, Midwest, you know,
wherever we're hosting the World Cup. It's so funny to
me watching foreign eyes observe things that we see every day.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
And you know what happened. There was a video.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Well makes you appreciate American culture, right, the little things
we take for granted.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
There was there was a video that surfaced of some attai.
I think he was an Italian kid. Yeah, fascinated with
the idea of free refills.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Oh, you don't appreciate it until you travel overseas somewhere
and they don't give it.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
This guy's very funny too. I can these a thousand times. Yeah,
but you won't drink a thousand cups of and it's free.
You paid it for me. You beat it once. Slow down,
guy can't. I can't handle it free refills.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
You know, since we were reminiscent before, though, it does
take you back to when you were a kid and
you went out to dinner with your parents to ground
Round or Sizzler, wherever you went, red Lobster, and you
would be finished with your soda before the meal even came,
and you would be so lucky. Your dad would be
giving you dirty looks, but you'd be so lucky to
get another drink because there were no free refills.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
The reality is your parents would yell at you because
you'd be the idiot.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Every kid did the same you. You finish your drink
before your meal.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
I get a Shirley Temple, please, one sip before the
meal even came.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
But now we live in a world of free refiels
refeels feet.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
But I just came back from Asia too rich and
my girlfriend was like, don't ask them, they don't do that.
I'm like, what are we doing?
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Man?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Makes me appreciate being American, you.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Know, speaking of a drinking way too much liquid. I
saw a bunch of them clips on social media. If
you want to just zip through these, they're pretty funny.
The big gulp is all the rage to people that
have ever seen like what that is a lot of soda?
Look at this post, not gonna lie.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Big gulps from seven eleven, the big gulp, Yes, I'll
have one, make it too, he is.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Not gonna lie.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Big gulps from seven eleven are easily one of my
favorite things I've discovered in America.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Look at that again. We take it for granted.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
In fact, sometimes we make fun of people who are
drinking big gulps. Nope, wait until they see the slurp people.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
I'll be honest, I'm not this guy. I'm not a
ranch guy. I think we abuse ranch. But there's a
woman visiting from speeding and this has gone viral. Why
did no one tell me ranch sauces like crack?
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Europe. We need ranch inset.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Very American, not even Europe. Like I said, I just
came back from Asia. I was eating all this chicken. No,
they don't do ranch to wait, they don't do ranch
at all. It's an American thing, and appreciate it. And hey, visitors,
enjoy our ranch, enjoy our American ways are condiments.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
What's interesting.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I don't want us to be known for like bad
fast food, but it's sort of one of the things
America does.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
I suppose right, we do it right own it.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
And you wouldn't consider this fast food but waffle house
if yeah, waffle This guy posting just had our first
waffle house experience at one am.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Great food, great prices, and friendly staff. Ten out of ten.
We're coming back. Ah, I like it the waffle How
do you say, what's the name of the one you
get that meal? Oh? The great like the great American. Ah, yes,
I have the great American my breakfast, Wait till I
see I hop in Denny's too.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Well? How you say the routie tooty, fresh and FRUITI yes, yes,
Oh nothing beats the moon's over my head.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Oh you gotta love the American ways. Man, You know
they're not gonna.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Want to leave when he realized that you could taste
all the syrups that I hop sample.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Yeah, Oh how you say a boys and bedding? Oh yeah,
so good?
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Right?
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Could I give you one that I didn't even discover
until I was an adult because my wife is from
the five State of Texas.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
But if you go.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Down south BUCkies, dude, this is a gas station.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Like people are fascinated by the fact that you could
go into BUCkies.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
I don't know if you are a video spot or
our video guy spot, have never been in a BUCkies.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
It's a gas station slash food place.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
In a Bucky they sell hats and cowboy hat, they
sell boots and brisket and fudge, and it's like you
could get anything at a BUCkies.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Nice. So think you could buy brisket and a gun
at BUCkies.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
You mentioned it already kind of sort of but something
that we do right that if visitors are here, they
want to see like here in La and like do
you have that in and ouns?
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Betterger. The one that's leading the charge here is Taco Bell. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
You know, I guess a lot of foreign countries apparently
they're called it the Holy land.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
A lot of foreign countries they don't have the Mexican
junk food.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, like Europe has a adopted obviously fast food burger
joints at our American, but Taco Bell hasn't. Maybe you
had the same reach because they are called at Cordia Crunch.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
By the way, Gordida Crunch best fast food item.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
If I if I'm visiting the United States, you would
tell them, tell them to get that mountain doing. Oh
and get the be a total fat American.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah, you're gonna have that. You gotta get the.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
You're gonna get tockle miss the green one culp h
baa you gotta get gotta get the baa.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Ble aft and uh got to send to Papa's chicken too,
my chickens from Papa.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah, so hey, be a good American host, you know,
taking the seven to eleven.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
But I'm a big golf And by the way.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Wait till they see our beer helmet game, Wait until
they see us in our beer helmets. Oh man, they're
canna be blown away. Enjoy right, Enjoy the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Enjoy everything you guys are doing as far as uh
that was me with a beer helmet.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Until they get a load of this American way great
AI guts yeah, AI right, and medill And by the way,
that adjustable strap Rich had to take it out because
his head's too big.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah, I can't wear that well. You know.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
This led me to something that I've been seeing on
social media. It's a funny trend. And listen, we're getting
older to the point where our childhood athlete stars have
grown up like hot daughters. Hey, you're a big fan
of Jose This daughter is good looking. But you notice
there are a lot of good looking sports daughters out there.
(16:35):
And there's a trend online, and there's multiple trends. But
I'm seeing a lot of what I'm calling sports daughter
dad pranks where you know, I know Pisada does a
lot with his family. He's really funny on social media.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
He's rising, he was like an intense player. He's a
funny dude on social media.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Matt Liner, it's pretty funny with his wife and kids online.
But every a lot of these athletes have funny I
guess you would say online and personas.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Now we're retired guys, right.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Yeah, Tom Brady can't leave him man, of course, even
Jeter's pretty for as stiff as he is or was.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
He's pretty funny with his kids. The viral clip of
Jeter in his car talking to his kids about winning.
You know, hey, it's all it's fun. But you know
winning too. Winning is more fun.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
But when you when you see some of these pranks,
have you guys seen now? Apparently Scott Shields of the Angels,
his daughter was the first to do this, but the
one I saw because his daughter has millions.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Of followers because she's like hot Matt Williams.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Remember slugger Matt Williams crawls over and although big beefy slugger,
his daughter Maddie like hot.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Social media girl? Is she Matt Williams daughter?
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Yeah, and she goes on social media? And this is
the great prank. You can play the beginning spot. But
she calls her dad Matt Williams and sickles in yourself, Hi.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Dad, nothing.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
So my friend is talking to this baseball player and
we wanted to know if his stats were good.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Chindons he plays like.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Shop or something. I honestly don't know. I have no idea.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Okay, so his batting average is point three oh three.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
That's good. That's good. It goes on.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Which he does, she goes over all of his career
stats and she's just reading the back of her dad's
baseball card.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
By the way, isn't it a wild though that Matt
Williams's daughter doesn't just say a three oh three batting
average like she says it like she's never heard of
these three oh three?
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Right. That's why, daughter though, right that you want to
know a little something.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
So he goes over she goes over all his stats,
and he's like, yeah, it's a good ballplayer.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
He's like, wait a minute, honey, are you reading my
baseball card? Because the home runs was a giveaway?
Speaker 4 (18:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:50):
How many forty three? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (18:53):
And then another fun one is when he's like, you know,
young daughters are like, Dad, do.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
You ever wish you were athletic? That's the best.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
That's the funny one because that goes for any spot, right,
or you could do that to anybody. Here's Randy Johnson
and his daughter.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Question and a question, Dad, A question, question, as I
have a question, do you ever wish you were athletics?
The big un well athletic?
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Or now.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
What I needed to do in my life?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Do you ever wish more athletic?
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Athletic? They can stop that.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
It's really funny because the dad's all these former like
Hall of Favors.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
They don't want to sound cocky, but at the same time,
like I thought, like I fucking dominate.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
I did it at the highest level possible. Randy Johnson,
do you wish you were more athletic?
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Well, there's a lot of kids doing that to their
like average athletic parents, and they get real man and
angry about it. When you do it to a Hall
of Famer, Yeah, they don't know how to handle it,
Like what do you mean by that?
Speaker 2 (20:03):
So hilarious, So keep a lookout for that. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
It's a trend that if you're a sports if you're
a sports fan, it's pretty funny to see that your
your hero's kids being like, hey, dad, do you wish
you were better at sports?
Speaker 2 (20:14):
And I say better at sports? Come, I was a
big leaguer. They called me the Big Unit. I killed
a pigeon with my speed. I won a few World Series.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
So hey, if you have any of those that you
want to pass along at Covino and Rich have a
great Thursday, enjoy your NBA Finals.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Maybe the Nick's lock it up this weekend.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
NHL Stanley Cup that's locked up two to two, so
lots of fun stuff and the World Cup. Enjoy your
soccer pencil erasers.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
All right, and enjoy Covino and Rich.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
We'll see you guys next time, but read been there baby,
see you any over Promised Lands.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Goodbye writer, no
