go back a little bit. So yesterday I filled in
and did the two hours with Tracy Sandler yesterday. And
as you know, Tracy is an unabashed, diehard Dodgers fan,
so looks to the core. He's to the core a
big Dodgers fan. So we obviously were getting into the
possibilities for Schoobul and we were talking about the Brewers,
were talking about the Ray, some of the other teams

that have been mentioned as possibilities.

And I brought up the fact that both the Rays
and Brewers know that he's not gonna sign long term
with those franchises, but half season rentals. The Brewers did
it with C. C. Sabathia, remember that phenomenal signing. He
was six in the MVP voting. Half a season with
the Brewers that year. Of course, after that season, ended
up signing with the Yankees. So I said, the Brewers
have been down the road. But if you think about

the Brewers, I mean, you're not worried about anything, but
right now, you've never won a World Series. If you
had a chance to pick up Terrek's schooble to win
a World Series, even if he doesn't sign with you
long term, mission accomplished. You've won a World Series. So
we're talking about this. So I turned to her and
I said, all right, Tracy, do you believe the Trek

Scooble will sign with the Dodgers? And she said yes,
he will be a Dodger. Like this is going to
happen and Chris and I gotta get Chris involved, because

never committed. Oh you're learning like that.

Milwaukee Brewer. They're just not going to pass up on this.
It's going to be competition between the two. We know
that the Tigers really could have gotten a lot more
if they had traded Schooble last year, but even down
the wire, they're gonna have the Brewers and the Dodgers competing.
Brewers are not going to let this opportunity get away

to get Schoolble to win a World Series. So I'm
going to go. And then immediately after the show, what
did you say to me that? Well, wasn't even after
the show. As soon as I said that, I turned
to Trace. I go, by the way, Tracy, is good
news for your prediction because I am literally the worst
prognosticator out there. So by guaranteeing that he'll be a Brewer,
most likely he's going to be a Dodger. So that's

exactly what happened. Then last night, I'm at the TV
station and I do a Saturday night commentary, and they
asked me, do you want to do a commentary on
where you think Trek's scuoble is going to end up.
I said, that's exactly what I do. And by the way, guys,
I'm going to say he's going to be a Milwaukee Brewer.
So that's exactly what was going to happen. And then

then boom, it hits that Tarrek Scooball indeed has been
traded to the Dodgers.

why there's a lot of conspiracy theorist out there right now.

when we talk about Terrek Scooble and what this guy
has done over the last several years, I mean just
this year. Here's one of my favorite stats on Schooble.
This year, I remember he missed a little time early
in the year. He has one hundred and sixteen strikeouts
and fourteen walks. That's eight point three strikeouts per walk.

From in the last two years combined, he was thirty
one and ten with a two thirty ERA, and he
had eighty more strikeouts than innings. He is a dominant pitcher.
And obviously the Dodgers have well, according to many people now,
have literally won themselves a third consecutive World Series, which
by the way, has never been done by a National

League team. No national league team has ever won three
consecutive World Series. They're about to so have they ruined baseball.
There's some people with a conspiracy theory. I want to
get your thoughts on this feejage that this seemed just
way too easy, like it's such an outrageously one sided deal,

that the optics are Major League Baseball just basically wanted
this deal to happen, that it's so outrageous because the
outcry obviously has been extreme since this deal went down
last night, that the Dodgers have literally ruined baseball. Baseball's ruined.
This guarantees that we're going to have a lockout immediately.

There's no way baseball is going to happen in twenty
twenty seven, and that Major League Baseball wanted the to
happen just to get the fans outraged. And the idea
again is is that the owners, and they try this before,
they have failed every single time. They try to twist
it against the players that you're the ones holding out,

You're the ones that won't agree to a cap situation
that would guarantee a certain equity amongst all the franchise.
This is how the owners are trying to paint it
against the players and put the heat on the players
from the fans standpoint, it's not gonna work, but that
is their goal. So do you believe in any way,
let's say the Dodgers do. Say, let's say Scoobl's lights

out the rest of the way. By the way, Eric Lowerd,
who they picked up off the scrap heat from Toronto,
do you know that not only is he five and
oh as a Dodger, they are nine to zero in
the nine games he has started? Could Scoob be any
better than that? But let's assume the Dodgers skate and
they go and I'll when that third World Series and
then of course collective Bargaining agreement expires about a month
after that. Have the Dodgers ruined major League Baseball by

market and leaving everyone else in the desk? Have they

I just don't see a team. If you're talking about

in downtown Detroit, you know that had kind of come
from part of the city being torn down and kind

of revitalizing. Mike the Illach family got that land of
pennies on the dollar from the city.

or he spent for Miguel Cabrera, He's spent for David Price.

weird generational flip that happens, and it's just the trust
babies to get all the money and they don't give it.

Why is this going to cause a lockout? You guys

we are already you know, we can make the argument
like the Dodgers did not need Scooble to win a
third consecutive World Series. They were still going to be
overwhelming favorites. Same thing as far as the lock I mean,
the overwhelming favorite in this race of whether or not
there's going to be a shutdown in Major League Baseball
is already in the books. I mean, we already said this.

This is all about a salary cap. The players will
never agree to a salary cap. It is never going
to happen. They're going to look at the owners and say,
look at you on your end, are going to have
to do a better job in terms of revenue sharing.
And then the owners counter by saying, well, we have
an agreement in play amongst the owners for revenue sharing,

but it's all based on you guys coming back to
working agreeing to a salary cap. In other words, we'll
have revenue sharing if and only if you guys agree
to a salary cap.

Speaker 3 (39:10):
And you don't see either, you don't see both sides
coming to some type of terms. You think it's just
gonna they're both gonna dig their heels in. There's no
heels doing anything.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
There's nothing this. This is exactly where we were in
nineteen ninety four. Exactly where we were in nineteen ninety
four because a lot of people are like, what are
you gonna do? Shut down the postseason? What are you
gonna ca year? Those things haven't changed, it I'm asking
and the reason I said, here's what has not changed,
and that is the power of the Major League Baseball
Players Union. I've said this before. It is one hundred

percent documented. Not only the strongest union in sports, it
is the strongest union in America. They never break break ever,
and so they will not they will not budge on this.
And obviously, the finances of baseball have changed dramatically in
the last thirty years. They have more money in their pockets.
So it's not like you know, nineteen ninety four and

twenty twenty six, you have more money in your pockets.
You have these extended, long term contracts that are fully guaranteed.
So even if you're gonna lose out on some money
by sitting out and getting your way. So this is
where it comes down to. Chris was talking about this.

Okay, So they go to a lockout, Fine, how do
they get back to the field. Because if you're saying
no one's going to budge, who's gonna budge during the lockout?

ninety four situation didn't end until eighteen games have been
canceled the next year, right, So there were eighteen games
canceled in ninety five, so it was still going on

are the speeches, right, and we've seen the Basketball Hall
of Fame passionate speeches, see the baseball Hall of Fame
passionate speeches, telling personal stories and everything else. All great.

The difference with the pro football Hall of Fame speeches
is that it's such a team sport. I mean so
much more. I mean, you could be that one dominant
player in basketball and literally carry a team. We know
that baseball is really an individual sport. I mean either
your pitcher or a hitter. I mean, that's what it's about.

But in football, there are so many moving pieces responsible
for any player's either success or their demise. As I said,
the NFL draft has ruined so many potential Hall of
Fame careers simply by forcing players to go to teams
that don't fit their skill set. It just happens. I've

said this about the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I
might be generous when I say this, but I'll just
use it as a barometer. Half the players that are
in the Pro Football Hall of Fame are just so
good it didn't matter who they played for. They were
just better than everyone else. The other half are in
the Pro Football Hall of Fame because they are on

the right team at the right time, perfect perfect fit.
And I really believe that. And I say about those
fifty percent, they could have been replaced by another group
of players had they had been afforded the same opportunity
to be the right system, the right team at the
right time. So one thing I love about the Pro

Football Hall of Fame speeches is the fact that they
most players, ninety nine percent of the players that get
to the top of the mountain and are going to
get that bust in Canton, Ohio, realize exactly everything that
had to go right in order for them to celebrate

just that angle of watching these speeches and talking about
when you reflect, like how did I get here? So
many things had to happen, right, I really believe that.

have had a Hall of Fame career, not to the
tune where it is now, but I do think he
would have still been a room. I mean, you're talking
about a five foot eleven inch quarter.

Sean Payton, Sean Payton didn't make him grow.

best and then helped create a system for the success.

to implement, and I'm going to get a quarterback that
has the skill set to actually do what I need
him to do from that position.

But there's ten quarterbacks in the NFL at that time
that could have went to San Francisco and did the

they can stick anybody into the system. And that's Kevin O'Connell.
The Minnesota Vikings. They moved on from Sam Donald because
they had another quarterback that they fully believed JJ McCarthy
could absolutely execute that system. Just as well as Sam

You can go before that, they moved on from Kirk
Cousins because they thought Sam Donald could do it to
do it right, and he.

Did do it right. And then they thought, all right, well,
if we could do that with Sam Donald, who was

certainly going to be able to do a JJ McCarthy
and I understand it just a one year sample, but
the fact was he wasn't able to actually actually, which
is why they're thinking, wow, okay, let's bring in Kyler Murray.

Maybe he can run this system. Not going to give
up on McCarthy because while we draft him in the
first round. But no, I think again, not every quarterback
can pull off every single system. No, not absolutely not.

look at that time in the mid to late eighties
and we start naming the top tier quarterbacks at that
time in the NFL because the West Coast office. The
reason why Bill Walsh, remember he brought it over from
Paul Brown, is where he learned it from. The reason
that whole thing was we want to get the ball out.
There was the first team to basically one two three,

throw one two three throw one two throw one two three,
pumpey one more step did throw That was like the
first system in the NFL that did it like that precise.
And then they go, Okay, we'll take this receiver named
Jerry Rice from Mississippi Valley State University. He runs precise rute.
Not the fastest guy, but I need a precise route runner.
So then we add in Jerry Rice. Now I need
a big possession guy. We're gonna add in John Taylor

won a nice big tight end. Here comes Brent Jones.
Then you get blessed with Roger Craig. Who this guy
is Marshall fault before Marshall Faulk And yes, and yet
they won that first Super Bowl with none.

had Earl Cooper. Okay, they had Freddie Solomon who was
a college quarterback at wide receive to help improve my point,

prospect for arguably the best pitcher in baseball. So break
it down. Why was this deal made for so little return?

have wound up with a slightly better return, whether it
was from the Rays or the Brewers. As for the timing,
I believe the Tigers surveyed the scene, and based on
the feedback they were getting from again teams like the Dodgers, Rais, etc.

That they believed that if they didn't make that deal yesterday,
the Dodgers are going to go somewhere else with their business.
We can have a debate today in a discussion if
if that was a misread by the Tigers, or if
the Dodgers were legitimately going to turn around and make
a different trade for you name it Foster Griven or

(01:37:18):
Freddy Peralta or one of the other names that's out there.
Obviously there's only one tariff Schooble. I tend to think
the Tigers probably could have waited another day and gotten
a slightly better deal today or maybe even tomorrow, right
at the deadline, knowing how valuable Schooble is, I think

they were afraid of losing leverage by having some of
the other teams involved pivot and make that trade, because
let's say if the Rays had made the Peralta trade
last night, then all of a sudden, the Tigers don't
have the Rays as a competitive team to give them
leverage over the Dodgers, and maybe they even lose the

deal they would gotten from La. The Tigers, though have
a reputation of being a somewhat deliberate front office, They
have not necessarily made trades with everyone in the sense
of being able to fully canvas and vet out the
options available to them, and I do believe that sometimes
those lack of relationships with every single front office and

(01:38:21):
being able to go deep with every single GM, I
think sometimes limits their pool of possibilities, and it resulted
in the package being a little bit less, at least
a little bit less than what it should have been.

Last night, my man, JP, big stuff going on there
your hometown with these tigers, A lot going on out
here and La la Land. We were going back and
forth on the shows. It's good for baseball, bad for baseball. Look,
I'm all about the evil empire, man, I'm all about

I hate when people can't admit it and just see
for what it is, whether it's media made, media built
and driven. But listen, the Dodgers doing what they're allowed

Down the line. And they have a group of guys
that get and understand that. My question to you is,
I'm comparing this run that they're on right now to
the late nineties, early two thousand Yankees. It feels like
that type of team. You got your stars, you got
your role guys, and you got your legendary guys, and

their thing. I just don't see anybody stopping it. Am
I wrong on that? And I think this is great
for baseball? You say what I say that two things.

Number One, it's not great for baseball and my estimation okay.
But number two, this is not the Dodger's fault. And
where I land on this in terms of it being
great not great for baseball. If anybody that's on social
media or as friends that's talking about this that's not

a Dodger fan or a Yankee fan, or or one
of the big market teams, if you're talking to your
friends today and whether they're a Tiger fan or a
Royals fan or a Marlins fan, whoever they support, and
they're saying to you that I'm frustrated with baseball that
it feels like this is only a championship that the

biggest of the big market teams can win, and my
team doesn't have a shot to compete. And I'm going
to tune out as a result of this trade last night,
and one that signifies about the baseball marketplace that that
to me is concerning. The Dodgers are still a great franchise.
They would have been a great franchise they didn't have
Trek Scooble. Without Trek Scooble, they still won the last

(01:40:50):
two World Series, so they're they're going to be fine.
And I do not begrudge them at all for utilizing
their their assets, by the way, their decision making, because
we can talk about how the Dodgers have money and
they do well. They've invested a lot of the money
in the infrastructure of their farm system. They have very
good scouts, they pay their scouts, they have them doing

(01:41:14):
good work to develop. They hire recently retired players like
Rolabanyas and Chris Archer to come in and do really
good analysts work for them. So I don't blame the
Dodgers at all. But if people are losing faith in
the ability of their team to compete and as a result,
are falling out of love with baseball, that's the problem.

(01:41:36):
And that concerns me of someone who wants as many
people as possible to feel strongly about Major League Baseball.

Speaker 2 (01:41:43):
Well, I agree with the one hundred percent on this. Look,
this comes down to ownership. It's not like the Illige
family doesn't have enough money to pay Trek Scuoble. It's
just the fact that Christopher Illige, who took over for
his late father, who did spend money back in the day,
does not want to spend that kind of money. Team
Million apart when Scooba went into arbitration and they weren't

(01:42:04):
even on the same page. So the thing that we
always talk about this idea that there are haves and
have nots. That's by choice. We're talking billionaire owners. They
all can play the game. And I always go back
to my dear friend, the late great Peter Seidler, who decided,
you know, what the hell with it. I know we
have the money, We're going to spend the money. And

(01:42:25):
he did because he was on limited time. He knew
his mortality, he was facing mortality in the mirror, and
he wanted to bring a championship to San Diego and
spend money. That everyone's, oh, you don't have that kind
of money. You're the San Diego Partners, You're a small
market team. No, they're small minded ownerships that refuse to
spend the money. So even if you do have some
kind of salary cap or some kind of equal distribution

(01:42:49):
of baseball revenue amongst teams and owners, that doesn't guarantee anything. Nothing.
We see that even in the NFL. There are teams
that will not invest in the organize. You made the point, JP,
the Dodgers have invested a lot into the infrastructure of
that organization, which is part of the reason, a big
part of the reason why they're able to sustain success

(01:43:10):
year after year after year. Even if he has some
kind of revenue sharing, does not mean that they're going
to invest that money because they want to keep up
for their own self as purposes, which is far more
important to them than their team winning.

Speaker 4 (01:43:24):
Correct. And I will say this, and this is something
that and we can have a real conversation about how
these owners would respond if there was, for example, a
salary cap. There may be, And we have to take
a step back and realize the people that own Major
League Baseball teams. You're right, they're all very wealthy. They're
all very successful business people by and large who made

(01:43:47):
their fortunes by making very good decisions. They might look
at this and say, you know, do I really want
to spend the additional marginal millions of dollars to bring
in this play, sign this free agent, make this crede
et cetera. If when I look at it ultimately I
see a relatively low chance of success at the end,

(01:44:09):
because of the structure of the game, because of how
great the Dodgers are, the current setup of the sport.
When you look at and we can talk about reasons why,
the reality is owners behave the way they behave, and
if you had a situation where the payrolls were in
more of a comparable range from one team to the next,

(01:44:31):
to where the Marlins or the Rays, or the Brewers
or even the Tigers felt like they could compete, they
might be more likely to spend that next marginal dollar
to give them a better chance to win. I think
there's a lot of different ways to look at it.
I'm not excusing the decisions of certain owners to not
be as competitive as they could be. What I am

(01:44:53):
saying is that when you look around the environment, they say,
wait a minute, how certain am I? How competent am
I that if I spent put this additional millions of
dollars into my business, that the outcome is going to
be better. If they feel like you're going to lose
the Dodgers without spending or with spending, the sensible business

answer might be I'm not going to spend, and that's
where the sport is right now and one of the
reasons why we are hearing calls for a salary cap
and a salary floor, importantly from a lot of people.
