Speaker 1 (00:01):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
That's right, you heard the man that's out of the week.
My name is Bernie Frodlewick County Line from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas will take you
up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
My goodness, what a day.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
And I know you've heard me say it a thousand times,
So what's once more? Sports are the greatest reality show
we have and you can script everything but the ending,
and the ending for some will come in about ten
hours aid nine am Pacific, Dune eastern. The Committee, oh yeah,
(00:42):
that committee that I think no one is fond of,
will decide the fate of the twelve winners. And what
I now again am going to characterize as to what
I believe will ultimately be the maid for TV Invitational.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Later in the show, I'm going to project my twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
I'll tease.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Here's why I believe the final the buys will be
the first four. I believe Indiana will be number one,
Georgia will be number two, Ohio State three, in Texas
Tech four. I had them all four right last year,
most of the twelve last year. Later on we're going
to get to the twelve in the show, I'll project
what I think is going to happen. And what's interesting
(01:26):
is that I've already seen projections out there that include Alabama. Fine,
it's the made for TV Invitational, but up until now,
I had never seen in any playoff a three loss team.
I'm not saying i'd complain if Alabama gets in, far
from it, but I've never seen a three loss team. Oh,
(01:46):
by the way, I've never seen a scenario where there
were two teams with the identical record that played each
other in the regular season and the loser advanced to
the playoffs and the winner stayed home. And I'm seeing
one projection from the Eastern Seaboard network that has that
very thing, Notre Dame in and Miami out and Alabama,
(02:11):
And we'll see. I'll give you my projections later in
the show, toward the end of the show, but probably
the last hour. Top of the hour, I'm gonna get
very thorough and granular about it and why I think
who's gonna end up where. But before we get to that,
you can't tell that story without very much chronicling and
annotating what turned out to be an incredible.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Conference championship Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And if the great John Facenda were still alive and
you ask him to describe Kurt Signetti, I'm sure he
would hit us as one of his you know, he's patented.
To describe Kurt Signette would be to drain the vocabulary
of superlatives. There's only one thing I can say about
Signetti that hasn't been said. I think he made it
(02:59):
look too easy. Indiana. I think you could make a
case just won the most impressive conference championship in the
history of college football. The last share of the Big
Ten was nineteen sixty seven. The last time they won
the Big Ten title, lot right, was eighty years ago.
And yeah, they hadn't beaten Ohio State since well, let's
(03:22):
put it this way, I think Ronald Reagan was finishing
up his first term. That's the last time, and he
ended to beat Ohio State again. I I think somehow
Signetti made it look too easy.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
He burst onto the seam last year with.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
That great press conference and Reggie Jackson type of braggadoccio,
but only he's done to back it up. A twenty
four and two record with the Hoosiers last year was
completely eye popping in and of himself. But then he
did lose to India. He lost to a Notre Dame
at Ohio State. Now he's you know, he's he's you know,
beating Ohio State. So the only cheam that's beaten in
(04:03):
the end they haven't beaten was would be Notre Dame
and they make it well, get to cracking.
Speaker 4 (04:14):

Well that's right, you heard the man. Is that time
of week? My name is Bernie Frederick, Come to your line.
From the Fox Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas.
We take up to three am Pacific six am Eastern,
and as usual, even though I've only got four hours,
I've got about six hours the material will try to
(05:23):
get to it all. Actually probably seven hours thanks to
that load in the shorts. Lane Kiffin, who if you
don't know by now, Lane Kiffin has a very well
documented history of abrupt departures, controversial departures from several high
profile coaching jobs. This may be the Cherriot on the cake.
(05:44):
I mean, this is so stupid. We're gonna hit to
it later. I'll give you a chronology. He obviously has
a reputation for messy innings and he is doing nothing
right now to change that.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
But I digress. I wanted to get to what should
have been the biggest news of the day.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
And if you happen to watch the Michigan Ohio State
game today, it is the greatest rivalry in all the sports.
It covered fourteen of him. It started out as a
land war in the eighteen hundreds, So think what you want.
But as you know, I look for turning points of
the game, and with about six minutes to go in
the first quarter, there I don't know Michigan was leading
(06:25):
six to nothing. Ohio State's Bo Jackson took a little
swing pass, turned the corner and he pulled the old
whip nay Na stanky leg on Michigan's Jimmy Rolder and
left his jock back in Ipsilanti. And from that point forward,
because I was on with Aaron and Jason last week,
I said, look, Michigan just will not be able to
(06:46):
match Ohio State skilled this week, and they didn't. And
anybody who thought Ohio State wasn't physical when now you're
being silly. I'll have some have some stats for you here,
but I think collectively you all can say your apologies
to Ryan Day now. I mean I have never He's
been beaten like a rented mule basically since he took
(07:08):
over for well, he didn't take over what he followed
Urban Meyer, let's face it, okay, And then heading into
this season, even though he won the National Championship, certain
people who want to get in props because he didn't
beat Michigan, which I get.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I get if you want to go down that road.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
And by the way, heading into this season, what if
I told you Ohio State lost eight players to the
NFL they lost their entire defensive line and both coordinators.
But since losing to Michigan last year on November thirtieth,
Ryan Day is now sixteen to zero, including wins over
(07:47):
number seven Tennessee, number one Texas, number three, Penn State,
number five Notre Dame. In the playoffs last year by
accumulative sixty points, they beat number one Oregon. Listen, this
is a team team at Texas Texas week one. Who
is preseason number one? And if you're scoring at home
and hope you are. Ryan Day is now two and
(08:09):
four versus Michigan. Won a national championship in his fifth year.
Remember Jimmy Harball, Jimmy Joseph Harrorball. He actually started out
zero to five against Ohio State. But those same people
that would put Harball and deify him, and no doubt
he's a Hall of Fame coach, no argument you want
(08:29):
to treat Ryan Day like a bastard child. Harball won
a Nationnaty in his eighth year, day one in his fifth.
So back to that physical part. Yeah, Ohio State out
gained Michigan today four hundred and nineteen yards to one
sixty three.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Just the facts, man, you don't like him.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Not my problem. Tile possession forty minutes to nineteen minutes
and fifty nine seconds, and I we're going to get
into the Brice one underwo thing a little bit later
because I like price unders under what.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
I like the way he carries himself.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
I think he's got a lot of ability, but I
don't see twelve million bucks yet. And I saw a
lot of air and throws today that were late, not
on time, not on target. And maybe that's why Ohio
State had twenty two first downs to Michigan's nine. And
oh yeah, Michigan only had negative eight rushing yards in
the second half. But give Michigan credit. Their best defensive
(09:24):
stand was at the end of the game when they
all stood by the block in at midfield and formed
a blockade as if Ohio State was going to try
to plant their flag. The classless move Michigan poll last year.
I could say this.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
I lived there.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
I lived in that area for seventeen years, covered that
team for fourteen years among the Lions and other teams.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
My dear mother went to the University of Michigan.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
It's a dignified institution, a wonderful institution, but they didn't
show it Saturday, they made assts of themselves. Ryan Dates
told Cherow and Moore, who I also like, He says,
we don't want a problem here. You better get your
players off the field. Look, we're not going to plan
a flag, but I got to do that. My god,
what the hell was that about? That tarnished a situation
(10:11):
that he's really majestic. And that's the Ohouse State Michigan
football game. And I got to tell you, be very
afraid this Ohio State teams. Loader. I know, Michigan's young.
They get to go to Columbus last year. Next year,
so we'll see what happens next year. But for the
first time in twy and ninety one days since before
(10:32):
the introduction of nil the transfer portal, well all kinds
of stuff, the Buckeyes again beat beat Michigan down, and
it give high props. I praise to Charles Woodson, who
was very classy.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
After the game.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
He said, look, they came in here and took care
of business. They beat us every which way. But Tuesday,
when the line of scrimmage won everything and Ryan Dave
finally gets the monkey off his back, Let's not forget
after that. Before that, Ohiose stated like seven in a row,
and it always goes back and forth. It goes back
to eighteen ninety seven. So now Michigan's had their little run.
(11:09):
They celebrated a little bit too much, and Michigan's got
a talent disparity.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
We'll see what happens next year.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
But look, the truth of the matter is, until coach
diet Day can reel off more victories against Michigan, He's
record against the team up north, and images of his
frozen posture following that twenty twenty four meltdown is going
to continue to circulate. That's just the way the world works.
People love to dunk on each other, But the truth
(11:39):
of the matter is, you know, Ryan Day has the
last laugh. Saturday, his rebuilt offensive line completely dominated the
line of scrimmage. They gave Julian say in plenty of time,
and there were tremendous rushing leyans for bo Jackson, who
had one hundred and seventeen yards. The defense was physical
(12:00):
point of attack very much. Did bother Bryce Underwood enough
to hold the Wolverines. Bryce underwent through for sixty three yards. Now,
I gotta tell you, but David Warren, the starting quarterback
for Michigan last year through for sixty two yards. So
for twelve million and you get one more yard I got.
I'm starting to wonder is he being developed properly at Michigan.
(12:23):
I don't see a lot of progression from week one
to what I saw Saturday. I'm sorry, and I saw it.
I see with arch Manning, see what look at Julian
saying he's a freshman too. So the truth of the
matter is for one day, Ohio State, you don't how
the thing works. It's they get to gloat for a
year and I listen, I don't know who's going to
(12:43):
beat them. They may win back to back national champion championships.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
We'll see.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
If they do that, that'd be twenty one wins in
a row. And that's the second big takeaway from Saturday,
Julian saying, completely outplayed Bryce went Underwood in the matchup
of the first year starting quarterbacks. And I can give
a bunch of numbers, but you saw it.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Trust your rights. They tell you a lot.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
You know Will Howard, people made fun of him last year,
but he still has a national championship. But all week,
fans and media members wondered if Jeremiah Smith and Cardinal
Tate would be available after they didn't play against Wreckers.
Smith had really looked like himself for about three or
four weeks. Tate hadn't even played in the game since
beating the Penn State back on November first. But they
(13:29):
were there Saturday, and they showed up and showed out
big time. And last thing I'll say about the game,
you know you were one of these people. Okay, there
was an early first of all, Michigan busts a run,
you know, first play of the game. They taken ready
(13:49):
to field, go range and gets stuffed in the red zone.
But they're got three nothing, They're off first blood them.
Julian's saying, throws a pick, and you know you were saying,
here you go. I was one of them. That's my buddy,
Arnie Spaniard. I called him and I said, I'm not
packing off. Ohio State's gonna come back and roll them.
Just wait till they get going. And they did. Michigan tried,
but they were overmatched badly. Ohio State flipped the field
(14:13):
and the next thing, you know, you know, and by
the way, Jay Sean Barkram is a good player, he
got he got kicked out of the Mexico game for
targeting a new Mexico game first week of the year.
He had to sit out a week head butts a ref.
He should think his lucky stars. He was not kicked
out of the game, and I'm glad he was, you know.
So at the end of the day, Ohio State's punter
(14:36):
didn't have to take a shower, Julian saying they don't
really have to watch his uniform, didn't get hurt and
give it up to Michigan kicker Dominic Zavada. He's been
struggling all year long, but he had a very good
game on Saturday. It's all Michigan could muster. Where field
goals more field goals when he ring field goals to
a touchdown, fight doesn't usually work out well. The other
big takeaway, you know, Auburn didn't beat Alabama. There's not
(15:00):
a lot of other craziness. However, if you would have
told me Duke would play for the ACC title next
week in football even though their record is seven to five, well,
does the ACC stand for the All Chaos Conference? Are
you kidding me? These are the teams who won't play
for the title next week. In Charlotte Louisville they're eight
(15:21):
and four, Wake Forest they're eight and four. SMU they're
eight and four, Pitts eight and four, Georgia Tech nine
to three. And how about the Miami Hurricanes ten and two. Hm,
they won't play for the conference title. Next week it's
Duke and Virginia. Get your popcorn ready? Uh? What more
(15:44):
can you say? The regular season was was a blur?
All right? This is Bernie Prattle, Fox Sports Radio. Apologize
for that. Things happen te aology as a mind of
its own. We are here in Las Vegas. We're often
we have internet issues. Mark. Can you hear me? Am
(16:08):
I coming through the airwaves? Mark? Okay, great, thank you.
So we're efforting my guest, Joe Gibbs, NFL repst at
we're left off? Do we have Joe almost almost?
Speaker 7 (16:25):
We're effitting right now.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Okay, just listen. Just to wrap up what Kurt Signetti
did this past year, these past two years, Saturday against
Ohio State absolutely legendary and not only home with Ohio
State beat Ohio State dominated Ohio State, our yard of
Ohio State. And the thing we're probably looking forward to
(16:51):
is might there be another Indiana Ohio State matchup for
the National Championship. Both are outstanding teams of we going
to be us about it. You have to wonder a
couple of games in a row. Now, while the Ohio
State offense wasn't performing at a at a higher level
than people were used to. If you dig into the numbers,
maybe Ohia State got a little fat against the weaker
(17:13):
Big Ten. But we'll decide that. Well, that'll be decided later.
I can say, is Georgia is now perhaps picking at
a very dangerous time. Do we have Joe Gibbs? Do
we have Joe Gibbs?
Speaker 8 (17:31):
Yep, Hey, Bunny, Joe, welcome man.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
I explained to you we had some technical difficulties. Let's
pick up where we would normally have left off. Joe,
as you know, is our NFL guru when it comes
to referees, keeping the metrics on referees and in terms
of their tendencies and much the same way you know
coaches players have tennessees, soda referees. So, Joe, we have
(17:57):
four big games you've sort of earmarked this weekend, and
I want to start with the Monday night game and
work backwards. Houston and Kanadas City is an incredibly pivotal game.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
And.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
That game will be refereed by a gentleman named Alan Eck,
who I understand is part of the John Hussey Crew,
and give us your thoughts about Allen X, Tennessee and
who may or may not be the beneficiary of his
style of refereeing.
Speaker 8 (18:25):
Yeah, so Eck was promoted to a head referee in
twenty twenty three. He was with the John Hussey Crew,
which anyone who's followed me knows that Hussey's crew is
the best home field advantage crew in the league. So
Eck is essentially a continuation of that. So home teams
have performed very well in these two plus seasons as
a head referee thirty one and twelve straight up seventy
two percent, twenty six and seventeen against the spread sixty
(18:48):
one percent. So those are some things brought up to
bat there. As far as the teams themselves, offensive holding
is always a big one. Shea's ranked second for offensive
holding penalties per game. The Texans defense it's a top
three unit generating offensive holding penalties on opponents. So right there,
you would look at it and be like, Okay, it
doesn't sound like it's a good good side for Kansas City.
(19:10):
As it turns out, ALLENNX crew does not make offensive
holding a point of emphasis, just fifteen out of seventeen
cruis in penalty per game average, so on the service
it should be an advantage from Kansas City tomorrow night.
I do think they try to let them play, and
as long as they call it eagerly for both teams,
I'm okay with them not calling offensive holding. I I'll
circle back to tonight's game, the Indiana and Ohio State game.
(19:34):
The commentators made mention of this multiple times that both
coaches were lobbying the officiating crews to call offensive holding
and they're refrained from doing so, which to me is fine.
If you won't let them play, let them play, okay,
as long as they call it evenly both ways, I'm
good with that. So that's what we should get tomorrow night.
Other things with this crew, Houston's offense is the number
(19:55):
one beneficiary of defensive holding penalties this season Allen NEXT crew.
Since twenty twenty threes first season, no crew has called
fewer defensive holding penalties, such an advantage for Kansas City.
They do offset that though defensive post and appearance and
illegal contact. This crew does call them above average emphasis
on those eighty percent of them on the on the
(20:15):
road teams, so you had to let up, you know,
but certainly bodes wealthy Kansas City. The game itself. I
lean to the under more than anything. Is the side
that I don't know what you think, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
I leaned to the under as well. Joe Houston's the
offense UH is among the tops in the NFL. I
think points will be the premium. I think Kansas City
is not the tact of team to get no shootout
UH anymore. And when you look at the importance of
this game, I think neither team is going to want
to make a mistake. I think you're gonna see two
(20:50):
conservative teams UH and the you know teams. Yeah, in no,
I agree, it's gonna be well.
Speaker 8 (20:58):
This is essentially a playoff game, and the teams are
going to treat it as such. I think you're going
to see a slow paced game, like you said, it's
going They're not gonna want to make a mistake. And
as long as it stays within one score, you know differential,
you're not gonna see anything crazy. If it gets out
of hand and maybe something something goes goes wrong and
they start to play more of ten though, but it's
gonna be freezing cold. It's a it's an elimination game. Yeah,
(21:20):
and you've got a crew that will probably let them play.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
So yeah.
Speaker 8 (21:23):
To me, it's got twenty sixteen written a lover something
like that.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Don's right, another key game Sunday, Joe that I'm very
much looking forward to, and just for posterity, I actually
grabbed Cincinnati and six points the three and oo with
Joe Burrow under center. You never know what you're gonna
get with with Buffalo. Brad Rogers is the lead referee
in this crew, and you had mentioned in your notes
(21:49):
that he's one of those guys that has a high
proclivity of false start halls.
Speaker 8 (21:55):
Yeah, they do this, Tay this guy. He leads the
league in that cumbination of full start off in holding,
so doesn't count for about thirty eight percent of penalties
assessed over the course of the season. These guys lead
the league in that category. Forty four and a half
percent of their penalties are called by either false start
or offensive holding. As it turns out, Buffalo is the
number one penalized team for offensive holding, so on the surface,
(22:17):
it doesn't look good for them. The Bengals defense, it's
not good, and they don't create a lot of chaots
up front for the opposing offense, so they don't generate
a lot of offensive holding penalties. So I'll be interested
to see how it's called tomorrow. These guys, the other one,
they call a lot of his offensive pass into fairs
and those penalties are spiked in the past few weeks,
and we saw it on Thursday night with the Lions
(22:38):
and Cowboys game. There's a huge offensive pass of affairs
on Dallas. These guys call more than anybody, so that's
something to keep an eye on on Sunday, especially with
Jamar Chase. He has a tendency to get a little
handy and push off here and there, so this crew
will look to call that. They're not a great home
field referee and Crove if anything, more of the under
(23:00):
with these guys are there's seven and four to the
under this season. They call a high proportion of that
penalties on the offense and on special teams, so they've
awarded the fewest automatic first downs via a penalty. By that,
I mean, you know, defensive positive fare into legal contact
things of that nature. But I'm with you. I like
Cincinnati as well. They have nothing to lose Buffalo. Look,
(23:21):
I was impressed with the last week against Pittsburgh. They
really ran the ball well. And look, if they can
do that again this week, then they'll probably get home
with a win. But they's got nothing to lose. And
since Borrow arrived, Cincinnati has had Buffalo's number, and so
that's six in the back of my mind. But I
like the Bengals two plus the points.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Yeah, I actually think that Bengals are very live to
win out.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Right, Joe.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
They impressed me last week with the complimentary football they played,
even the defense was fired up. And interesting side note
on this game, Buffalo apparently has an issue. They're above
average penalized and from the standpoint of offensive holding, and yeah,
the number one ranked penalized team for offensive holding and
this crew does call it above and beyond most.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
So we'll see. I always look at early in the game,
are they're going to stop calling it early? That kind
of sets the tone for the rest of the game.
So again, if you're watching the game, you're looking to
better in game or half time, just keeping eye on
the crew and how they call the game early because
that'll often you know, dictate how things go for the
rest of the game.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
And there's one other things too to note. Although Cincinnati's metrics,
which you've kept throughout the year don't cast them in
a very favorable light with respect to their ability to
commit a lot of penalties, that was when they didn't
have Joe Burrow. They're much less penalized team with Joe
Burrow under center. You got the last words.
Speaker 8 (24:42):
Oh, absolutely, they've been one of the most efficient cheams
when Borrow is there. They're always in the bottom you know,
bottom five, bottom three teams as far as penalties per game.
That splats when he's not there, because the offense gets
a little sloppy. But as far as committing penalties, that
one of the least penalizement Borrow is there. Also that
one of the most efficient at generating penalties on the
(25:05):
opposing deep of the opposing defense as far as defensive
possil affairs, defensive holding, things like that, they're always in
the top three getting those big chunk yardage plays by penalties.
So keep that, keep that in mark tomorrow as well.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
It feels like and then he puts the points is
a good bargain based on all the data, I think
you've got. A three point Buffalo win would not surprise
be honestly at all if Cincinnati would have went out right.
Which brings me to the next game, which seems like
a monumental game for both teams. The Bears incredibly are
the number one overall seed as of December seventh, and
(25:42):
you and I both agree, how long can they keep
up this high wire act? So far they keep defying it.
So they head into Green Bay for a tough divisional matchup,
and they're all about, you know, I'm the guys who
Craig Rollstad, what is Craig Rollstad style? And that might him?
How might ee and the lead referee playing to this game?
Speaker 8 (26:04):
Yeah, well, roll Stat's crew led the league in presnat
penalty percentage. That means overall percentage of their penalty is
the highest amount called by a pre snat penalties last season.
They've dialed it back a little bit this year, but
they still above average of you know, enforcing pre snap
infractions that could be problematic for Chicago. They're ranked as
(26:25):
the top three penalized team for pre stat penalties. Now
that's a little bit misleading because a lot of that's
front loaded. They were really sloppy to start the season
and they have improved in this past you know, three
or four games. So if they can keep that up tomorrow,
they should be okay. They should be able to navigate
this crew. But you know, you're at Lambeau. You got
that pack of defense penning its ease back if you
(26:46):
if you start committing you know, false start to llegal shifts,
things of that nature. You know, it's it's it's tough floting.
You got to get pack of defense there. The thing
with rollstat is sixty one percent of these presnat penalties
this year have been on the team, so they do
zero in more on the on the road team in
this one. You know, Rollstead's officiated quite a few games
(27:08):
between these two teams. Uh, this will be his fifth
game in five years doing these two teams. Green Bay
has a good record with Rolstead versus the Bears and overall,
but you know, some of that stuffs a little bit misleading.
I mean, the Packers have just been a better team
and it wouldn't matter who was official. It could be
you Bernie officiating and they still probably win. So it's
not necessarily because the Rollstead per se. It's just it's
(27:29):
just happened to be. He was officiated a lot of
games between these two teams, and green Bay's come out
on the top. But yeah, Prestatt penalty tomorrow, that's a
big one to look for. Chicago was a disaster in
that category early in the year, but like I said,
they've cleaned it up, and if they can do that tomorrow,
they got a chance. I like green Bay. You know
the whole Ben Johnson thing talking smack about you know
we're gonna win two games a year against the Packers
(27:51):
and that. Yeah, well, I mean, look, he said that
in January the press conference, and it's one thing to
say it in January, but now it's time to actually
back it up. So here we are in December, it's
time to back it up. So we'll see what happens tomorrow.
I think I think Rossett will try to let him play.
But I like green Bay in this one. I think, Look,
I think green Bay's best is as good as anyone's best. Yeah,
(28:14):
the question is you actually get that best because they
can be very choppy, but you know, they should be
focused tomorrow, and again, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
We've been waiting for a week with its highway Iraq,
the crash to the ground. You could have got the
barras at seven earlier in the week. I think those
are gone now. I feel like green Bay wins by
about seven. But I yeah, you know, I'm not laying him.
Speaker 8 (28:42):
No, I look back to give an opinion. So if
I had to be, it will be green Bay or
nothing for me. That that lambeau Field. I know thet
a couple of games that this year, but it wasn't
because of the It wasn't because of the defense. In
those games, they held Philly to ten points. I think
they held Carolina for like six.
Speaker 9 (28:59):
Animal.
Speaker 8 (29:00):
Third thing, the defense is going to show up. It's
just a matter of can the offense come in focused
and quick?
Speaker 2 (29:06):
All right, Joe, Last game Indiana versus Jacksonville. This one
has me intrigued to have Jacksonville as a dog at
home as part of a teaser. As part of a
teaser of pair, Jacksonville actually had the Indianapolis his number
over the years. But again, this is a situation where
you know it's it's an independent trial, and I believe
(29:29):
John Hutche's on this crew. Is that correct.
Speaker 8 (29:31):
Yeah, the afore mentioned John Hussey we talked about in
the first game. So he's on this game. And if
anyone doesn't really know who he is, he officiated last week.
He did the Kansas City Dallas game and he still
had that kind of tilted to the Dallas's favor with
a lot of the Coals in that game. So that's
this crew on the Colts and Jags tomorrow. A very
good home field referee. This is going back to twenty
sixteen home teams one oh nine and forty nine straight
(29:55):
up sixty winning percentage with these guys. That includes seven
full the home teams this season. Again, he puts more
focus on the offensive holding false start combinations than league average,
and that could be a problem for Jacksonville. They're the
number one penalized team in the league and they do
struggle in that category of false starts offensive holding. Now,
(30:16):
so far they've won in spite of that and so
that but that would be a concern for me because
the Colts do have a major advantage in those two categories,
and those are the most important ones. The Jags offensive
top five beneficiary of automatic first downs via penalty, you know,
via defensive pass and affairance, defensive holding, stuff like that.
But Hockey's crew ranks number one for calling defensive pass
(30:38):
and afferance. And again, going back to that Kansas City
Dallas game last week, you saw a ton of defensive
pass and appearance calls on the Chiefs. So that could
be to Jacksonville's favorite if form holds the teams themselves.
I mean, look, the Colts team now is not the
same as that Colts team will seeing the first half
of the season. And Daniel Jones is on a broken figure.
I don't know, I'm not a doctor at but doesn't
(30:59):
sound good. Let's just put it that way, especially for
a guy like him that needs these legs, and we
got that threat with him, with him potentially running, it
takes away a big part of that offense. And so
Jacksonville's run defense is actually very good. I did watch them.
I don't think they're a great team, but the run defense,
from what I'm saying, is pretty good. And obviously Colts
everything runs through Jonathan Taylor, So I like Jacksonville here
(31:22):
as well. The Colts have struggled down there. You mentioned that,
I think it's been like ten years since they won
down there, and they had some good teams over that time.
There were times when Andrew Luckwoo on there and the
culture flavored block sixt eighty points and they lost.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Joe, great stuff. We got a little bit just training
tonight with the technical issues. Let's get you on again
before the playoffs.
Speaker 8 (31:41):
Okay, sounds good, Bernie, good luck tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Thanks, it's Joe Gibbs. Follow him a rep. That's by
the way, we are twenty minutes away from the midnight
hour eight seven seven nine ninety six six three sixty nine.
I've got two topics tonight that you generate a lot
of firepower, really looking forward to with the people have
to say about those. We'll set those up in just
a second. By the way, be sure to subscribe to
(32:04):
the Fox Sports Radio YouTube channel. Just search Fox Sports
Radio on YouTube. We'll see our best videos from all
of our shows. Don't stop there. Hit that thumbs up icon,
comment away. Let us know whose takes you like, and
even those who don't. Just search Fox Sports Radio on
YouTube and subscribe. Coming up, yep, it's time we set
up our topics for the midnight out. From where I sit,
(32:25):
it's twelve midnight in Las Vegas. Literally perhaps the same
for you and perhaps figuratively as well. On Bernie Prattle,
we are coming to your line from the Fox Sports
Radio studios here in Las Vegas. Keep it lock and
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
On don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
All right, back in the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
As they say in the business, we had some technical difficulties.
Thanks to my crew, we fought through it, Brandon and Mark,
and we are on. I'm fired up for a big
midnight hour tonight. What's always big thanks to the callers
eight seven seven nine nine six six three six nine. Look,
(33:13):
we have a situation. We have this little thing called analytics,
all right. And I'm one of those people that I
think analytics are a guideline, not an inflexible anchor. But
if there's one thing I'm sick of, it's coaches leaving
points on the board because they think they're cute. And
then he announce says, well, yeah, the book says, well,
the game's not played by a book, all right. I
(33:36):
covered the lines for ten years in these three things.
I know one the first points of the game of
the hardest. So you may drive down the field and
it's fourth and one from the four, and you say, well,
the book says go for it. But if you don't
get that, it changes the dynamic of the game. The
many you put points on the board, things start to happen.
So a field goal is better than nothing, all right.
(33:57):
And I would also say that you're far better off
going for a field goal if you can make it
a one score game or you can tie a game.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Where am I going with this? I want to hear
from the folks eight.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
Seven, seven, nine ninety six six three six y nine.
Do you like analytics? Do you hate analytics? Are you
somewhere in the middle again? For me, it's a guideline,
not an NFL about an inflexible anker. Here's why the
stats alone. First of all, analytics tell you what happened yesterday,
not what's going to happen tomorrow. And they lack subtext,
(34:30):
they lack context. They don't capture the human element, the
fluidity of a game, the dynamic nature of a specific game,
how things are going, the ebb and flow of the weather,
the specific context of how individual teams are performing that
day certain situations. So the data is frankly incomplete there's
too many variables. These analytics often rely on historical data
(34:54):
of stuff maybe played over a thousand times, but it
doesn't say if you're starting running back is hurt or limping,
or they're snow on the ground or.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
The winds blowing.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
They use all this league wide data that may have
nothing to do with the specific context of the game
that's being played that day, things like weather conditions in
game injuries, player fatigue, momentum, team chemistry. Now, critics all
argue that many crucial factors that influence outcomes frankly cannot,
will not, and are not typically reliably measured by simple
(35:24):
data model data models, I like the human element. There's
a significant argument that you know and I know no
data can measure in tangible qualities like a player's mental toughness,
it's hard, it's leadership, their competitive drives, how they play
in the clutch, how they handle pressure.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Coaches often rely on their.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Intuition and feel for the game, developed over observation years
of experience to make real time decisions on the fly
and heat of battle that data alone can't do for you.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
There's a general lack of specificity.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
Analytics like the have a success rate for fourth down
conversions across the entire NFL that may have no relevance
to a specific team's unique strengths and weaknesses on the
game they're playing that particular day. For let's say, let's
say a team has a dominant defensive player and he's
in a certain position on the field and a certain
personnel grouping and a certain alignment, and it might be
(36:20):
unwise to run the ball on that side, even though
the analytics say all the book says, go for it, right.
I know this kind of overreliance on data, I think
not only pigeonholes players, teams, coaches.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I think it.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
I think it degrades the quality of the game unless
it makes it a less entertaining game. There's there's also
a bit of a disconnect between all the data nerds,
many of who never wore a jock, and traditional coaching
staffs who will rely on their jobs are on the
line to completely trust this complex statistical finding that's presented
(36:59):
to them. So you just can't relegate to everything to
what the books is. I know analytics driven decisions can
generate major controversies. I was just in Michigan last week,
and I love Dan Campbell he's under the gun. He's
not on the hot seat, trust me, don't even think
about that. But he's under the gun for his stubbornness
on fourth down situations where it's cost him. And there
(37:22):
was one coach who's on this way to the playoffs.
I've saved this for four weeks. I'm not going to
mention the team of the name who three times in
the first half passed up field goals to go forward
on fourth down and their chip shot field goals likely
would have been made, and they found themselves leading by
two with time running out and the opponent kicking a
field goal that could have beat him. And if they
(37:44):
missed the field goal. Now, had they just had that
particular coach in that team settled for those field goals,
that would have been likely nine additional points they left
on the board, then you find yourself changing your chasing points.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
So I want to talk about analytics.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Do you like him? Do you hate him?
Speaker 3 (38:01):
You know where I stand? Number two, this popped into
my mind. We got to run with it.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Ole Miss has a good football team, and I think
they're gonna quit themselves well in the playoffs. I don't
think they're gonna win it. But they could, but I
don't think they will. What the hell do you do
if Ole miss wins the Natty? Does Lane Kiffin as
part of his resume? Is he credited with a Natty?
He put the team together, coached him in the regular season,
but he wasn't there to finish the job. Do you
(38:30):
give Lane Kiffin credit for a Natty? So analytics, I
want to get your thoughts, inflexible anchor Guideline, hate them?
Like them?
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Have they hurt your team?
Speaker 2 (38:39):
Secondly, Lane Kiffin, if miss ole Miss wins the National Championship,
does he get the Natty? Eight seven seven nine nine
six six three sixty nine eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox Really looking forward to hear from you, or
if you want a rent, you can bring in your
own topic, but make it good. You're listening to Bernie Friday.
It is the midnight out on Fox Sports.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
That's right, you heard the man Bernie Fraddle Show. It
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We're
coming to line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio studios.
Take you up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern,
just getting rocking and rolling So we've got a couple
of good topics tonight for the midnight hour. Analytics? Are
(39:28):
they a guideline or an inflexible anchor? I gave you
all my reasons why I am very middling about them.
The data fat I think it fails to capture the
full scope of the game, the human element. The game
is played by people, there's a certain in game context
to it at lacks specificity, and there's data limitations that
don't take into account a.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Lot of things.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Remember this is data gather over the years, and it's
supposed to be applied what's happening in that minute without
the same context. So I want your thoughts on analytics. Secondly,
what in the world do you do if Mississippi wins
the national championship? Do you give Lane Kiffin credit? Does
he now have on his resume a national championship? He
(40:11):
recruited the team, coached the team, got him to the playoffs,
but didn't finish the job. How do you handle it?
It's time to midnight hour? All right, let's let this
can we got to Massachusetts. Jim, welcome in, buddy. We
missed you last week.
Speaker 4 (40:25):
Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 10 (40:26):
Bernie?
Speaker 4 (40:26):
I was on vacation. Hey about analytics, About analytics, I
agree with everything you say, but I'm with Childs Bockley
on analytics. Child said, on analytics, these are people that
never played the game and never got the girl in
high school. And he's absolutely right. He's absolutely right. It's
(40:48):
the human element. There's all sorts of other things that
come into play, and they think they just can look
at numbers on a computer print out and think that's
gonna happen. And the reason you can look back pick
a sport, any sport, all the busts, all the draft
bus you know that was all by analytics. You think
they just go out and make picks. They of course
(41:11):
they go over all that stuff, but they always leave
out that one, that one side of it.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
You know.
Speaker 4 (41:16):
That's the way it is with analytics.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
I think there's a there's there's an over reliance on analytics,
and I don't like it anymore. And it takes away
the human the human elements, intangible factors like player psychology, momentum,
clutch factor, all those things.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Jim, what is Mississippi? When's a natty?
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Does Lane Kiffin get to put out on his resume?
Speaker 4 (41:38):
And I don't know about that. I mean, you know,
you know the NCAA with all these the rules that
they set that up where he went for the ninety
one ninety one million dollars was terrible turned down ninety
one million dollars.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
Well, the old missus matching it. U.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
This is the thing that shocked me is that he's
going to an in conference rival, not only in the conference,
but the you know, their rivals, you know. And I
just you know, he's just chasing the money and figure,
you know, the all of who blow with that, and
you know that's the way America is set up for
is you know, to chase the Greenbacks. And that's the
(42:16):
way it is. And you know, I don't know what
you're going to do about it, but you know I.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Think I say no, I say, you don't, I say not, no,
hell no. He does not get credit for a national
championship because he quit half mile off shore. So that's
my take. You got some quickly. He got the last word.
Speaker 4 (42:32):
Hey, yeah, one last thing, Bernnie. I'm going off to chat. Hey,
what happened to your Lakers against the Celtics. They lost
by twenty six but out paid him.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I was my friend that they were my Lakers. I can,
I can write, I can surely don't call me. Surely
I will assure you they are not my Lakers at
one time, but not anymore, not this version.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
Good good luck. That was a good game, all right, right, Jim.
Good to hear from you.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
Solomon in Los Angeles, Welcome into the Bernie Fraderishi, how
are you hey, I'm.
Speaker 11 (43:00):
Good, Bunnie, it's been a while.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
Then you hear your voice. Good back at you.
Speaker 12 (43:05):
Thanks man. A couple of things, Yeah, answering your questions
for the evening.
Speaker 9 (43:09):
Analytics, I could live without them.
Speaker 12 (43:12):
You know, I'm seventy six years old. I've seen a
lot of sports and listened to a lot of sports
in my times, and it existed without analytics, and it
was just fine. And the two examples I thoughtled Dave Roberts,
NIGGI Bojas you want to tell me that was that?
Speaker 2 (43:29):
There you go, well, okay, so you know it's not
even an interesting Solomon. Remember back in the day, there
was a guy like Girl Weaver. He would beat John
Lowenstein against left handers. He was a left handed hitter.
They used to do a thing back in the day, solemnly,
not just sure. You remember they called it playing the percentages,
But nothing can beat the gut feel of a human
(43:50):
being with experience who's right there in the moment, in
the context of that game.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
Continue on.
Speaker 12 (43:56):
Yeah, yeah, no exactly, you're the first stealing my thunder.
Speaker 9 (43:59):
There's a you half of the game.
Speaker 12 (44:01):
You know, some thing's passed the those tests. You can
see what your guys what's going on. And Dave Robbers
was the perfect example of going with his gut because
he had a feeling.
Speaker 11 (44:11):
He knows his.
Speaker 12 (44:11):
Players, and he knew Miggy and you know, the.
Speaker 9 (44:14):
Best is history.
Speaker 12 (44:15):
Regarding Lane Kiffin, I wouldn't let the dude come within
one hundred miles of that Sophie, to be honest, you
know what I'm like.
Speaker 4 (44:24):
You know, yeah, you don't get that pether in Here's cap.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
You know you crapped out, you left, sorry, see you.
Speaker 12 (44:31):
Buddy, you don't get that on your resume.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
I'm with you, Solomon. Good to hear from you again.
You take care and joy the rest of your weekend. Kyle,
my man from here in Las Vegas where we sometimes
have internet issues.
Speaker 13 (44:43):
You got the floor, well you got you got that
old cool dial up stuff aol.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
Yeah, yeah, you.
Speaker 2 (44:48):
Know usually my old Commodore sixty four works just fine,
but tonight it took a crap.
Speaker 13 (44:53):
Well, you gotta tell him, you got to hang up
the phone before you start up the internet.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
Yeah, wait, walk.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Any who?
Speaker 13 (45:01):
Any who, Let's let's get right to the meat and
potatoes and everything. So analytics, if we're going by analytics,
just look at what the QBR has done to the
game of football. For analytics, you got I've seen it
half ago, maybe two weeks ago, where you had Door
Sanders had the lowest QBR rating out of all the
(45:21):
starting quarterbacks of the week that he's that he first started,
where he won eleven of twenty and for some odd reason,
he had an eight point nine QBR rating. So analytics
kick that, kick that to the curb wherever it needs
to be. Let's not even get into that. I don't
even want to talk about lame Kiffin. He deserves nothing. Yeah,
he deserves nothing. And lastly, Bernie, I know you ain't
(45:45):
touched on it, but I heard a little bit about it.
But the Bears got a good chance to win tomorrow.
I mean, if analytics say anything, we got a great
chance to beat the Packers tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
It's going to be it's going to be Thanks Scott,
appreciate it. Yeah, it's going to be a Marquee game. Obviously,
a conference matchup in lambeau Field. Some Chicago money's coming
in because they just keep writing this high wire act
and I keep waiting.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
Four ten, We'll see.
Speaker 11 (46:12):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Le June, I hope I'm pronouncing it right. You can
correct me if I'm wrong. Le June in Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
Welcome in.
Speaker 14 (46:19):
It's a I'm sorry, La June.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Not June. I apologize. So, La ju did this your
first time calling the show? Yes, sir, well, welcome in.
Don't be a stranger. You got the floor. Let her it.
Speaker 15 (46:30):
Okay.
Speaker 14 (46:30):
Well, here's my thing about analytics. I mean, it's a
good tool when you're trying to find players. But the
problem is, wasn't if it's somebody like Fernando Tatis that
has all the you know, numbers, but people just hated
his guts.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
You know, the players don't like him.
Speaker 14 (46:46):
They're not kind of jell as the team. You know,
it's the team. It's a team sport. That's why it's Dodgers.
I think they kind of geld this year in the
last two years. But the fact of the matter is
that they're factions within the team and you know they
hate each other, then it's not gonna work. And that's
for Lane Kiffin. You know, he's a he just he's
(47:08):
a quitter. I never liked him as a you know,
as a coach, and maybe he deserves like one star.
But let's be honest, man, Ole, this isn't gonna win
national championships. So I won't even worry about that conversation
right now.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
Well, I haven't agreement with you, it's just a talking point.
I don't think they're going to win it either. And
Lane Kiff, and I think now is the owner of
the five messiest departures in all of sports. Not I
gave the chronology last week toward the end of my
show from from the Raiders to Tennessee to usc and
every one of them was a twenty car pile up.
(47:43):
You got the last word, La June.
Speaker 14 (47:46):
Yeah, man, no, everything's good. But uh thanks thanks for
letting me be on your show. And that's about it.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
All right, Well this we do this every Saturday night
at twelve am or yeah, twelve midnight Pacific time. Don't
be a stranger, spox weed my man, Well, we got
to start with the usual.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
What is your livation tonight?
Speaker 16 (48:07):
Well, since it's the holidays, I'm having eagle rare bourbon
with eggnogs.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
Man, you don't get cheated, you don't get.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
No you know it.
Speaker 16 (48:17):
It's good enough to drink straight, But man, is it
good in some ignogic little nut bag.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
You get yourself a drink right there.
Speaker 16 (48:23):
Yeah, you're killing two births. You're multitasking, that's true. I
keep the weight up, you know, I mean training.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
All right, get that fight waight up? Continue on, my friend.
You know where we're going tonight. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 16 (48:40):
Analytics. Like like last man said, he stole my line.
Analytics is a tool. But any coach that relies only
on analytics is a tool.
Speaker 2 (48:50):
So my line is, it's it's it's it's a guideline,
not an inflexible anchor. No, not at all. And then
inangibles go ahead.
Speaker 16 (48:59):
And a couple of things that I that I would
say are are very true about analytics. If you're depending
on George Pickens to get you over the line in
the fourth and one kick the field goal, yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
It me How coaches continually leave points on the board. Yeah,
if you know, for ten years I did the Lions
pre and post game show with a team, and we
used to say the first points are the hardest.
Speaker 3 (49:24):
So I got no problem.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
The coach goes down the field, you're stuck on the three. Yeah.
I know, you don't bring field goals to a touchdown fight,
but reas better than zero and when you get those
first points, things seem to flow. All right, what do
you think about Lane Kiffin? Did you deserve some hardware
if if somehow Ole Miss wins it.
Speaker 16 (49:42):
Well, one more thing about analytics want I wanted to say,
and that is is that coaches that have played like
you said, they're the only ones that get to have
a magic eight jock on this thing. So they get
they get to figure that one out and they've got
their magic eight jock twice in the radio, and I
guess that's all I get on that one. But Lane Kiffin,
(50:06):
he gave it up. I don't have a problem with
him going for the money. I don't like him as
as his career and he left people in the dust
and he doesn't get squat and.
Speaker 2 (50:16):
That's that's the way it goes.
Speaker 16 (50:17):
Like I said, you know, they should write the trophy,
you know, if they win, you know, these people went
except for Lane Kiffin. And the last thing I want
to say is on a different, slightly different talking is way,
the hell to go Indiana. I didn't think. I didn't
think they were going to get done. It was a
(50:37):
defensive trench battle, no score in the fourth quarter. I
couldn't believe what I was watching, and my wife made
a tremendous homemade pizza that.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
I had to watch eat in front of the TV.
Your triple multitasking, good stuff. As always, Fox, we appreciate you. Man.
Rest easy out there. Yeah, look after the organ game,
everything changed for me. The test matters. I trust my
eyes and me a lot. They were violent on defense
against Oregan. They set the edges, they pressured the backfield.
They had tackles for loss. They showed me they had
(51:07):
two NFL wide receivers, a couple of NFL corners, and
a quarterback who should win the Heisman Trophy. Kenny and Alabama,
welcome back in.
Speaker 11 (51:16):
How are you, hey, How you doing? Thanks for taking
a call and keep back. Oh yeah, analytics hate them
Like you know, you're not controlling robots out there and nothing.
It's a human element, like you said, It's not like
you're playing the field game or something. I just got going.
(51:38):
You're good, Like you said. As far as Lane kissing
soon he left old Miss, you know he should be
worrying about LSU winning the Birmingham Bowl or.
Speaker 9 (51:47):
The Music City Bowl.
Speaker 11 (51:49):
And I want to add one more thing. I think
because I know the college football playoffs probably going to
spand I think they should have like the Power of
four or.
Speaker 17 (52:02):
Power five, whoever has their own playoff bracket, and whoever
win out of the playoff, you know, that champion take
on like the Group of five or six champion in
their own playoff bracket.
Speaker 11 (52:15):
Kind of like the NFL move. You have the NFC
and AFC and they play and see who's the real
college football champion.
Speaker 3 (52:22):
You know, that's really not a bad idea.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
We have to do something so that if you are
playing college football and you are in a codified conference,
what other sport do you have where you can play
the entire season going defeate and have no chance at
the national championship? Only stupid college football. They're trying to
fix it, and they're doing a lows your job. That
is not a bad idea, Kenny. I appreciate you man. Thanks, Thanks, thanks,
(52:45):
thanks for checking in. We're off and running. Greg and Texas,
Christen Boston, Jeff and Denver and Martin from Orange, California. Guys,
hayk Tech, We're gonna get to all of you. Eight
seven seven ninety nine six six three six nine. We're
talking about analytics. Your thoughts. I gave a long oratory
about the downside. I think it's a guideline, not an
(53:06):
inflexible anchor. And Lane Kiffin, what do you do if
Mississippi wins? Do we dare allow his name to be
on the trophy? By the way, for the best pregame

All right, back in the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
The minute, hours rolling right along. Calls have been great.
We continue back out to the phones. Greg in Texas,
you are up next. Thanks for hanging on, buddy, Hey,
thank you for a field in my call.
Speaker 10 (54:18):
Sir, first of all, about the diagnostics and all that stuff,
serving suggestions, that's all serving suggestions. You know, there's there's nothing.
Speaker 2 (54:31):
There there in your radio, donat. I can hear you,
but I'm hearing your radio in the background. Maybe you
could pop that down a bit.
Speaker 10 (54:41):
No, no, my fat ears hit the phone.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
But yeah, you're listen. You're right, it's a suggestion.
Speaker 2 (54:48):
I they've gone too far, all right, They used very
They don't capture all the intangibles or the context of
what's going on in the game that day.
Speaker 3 (54:58):
Continue on, and the same.
Speaker 18 (55:00):
Thing is that other teams, you know, they don't thing
the fact are in their ability to handle those things,
you know, handle the diagnostics.
Speaker 3 (55:09):
Yes, so.
Speaker 10 (55:11):
It's just it's just a serving suggestion and to me,
it's just a gambling thing. But I'll leave that alone.
I'm gonna give props to I.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
You absolutely big time props to IU.
Speaker 10 (55:29):
Props I you, we know, for them doing it. As
far as Laye Kiffin, please let him kick rocks, it's.
Speaker 2 (55:38):
Kind of popped into my mind. He's such a load
in the shorts. You'll probably ask for a trophy if
they win it.
Speaker 18 (55:44):
Well, well, you know, well he wasn't the one that
left by choice.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Quote quote yeah right.
Speaker 10 (55:51):
They don't need these coaches do not need to be
accepting job interviews, and in the end of the season
that just needs to stop.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
Well the system is completely for clemed. That's that's all
there is to it. But the timing of this. And
he's had five of these now, thanks for checking in, Greg,
appreciate it. He's had five of these messy departures. And
last week I gave her chronology. I mean, Al Davis
called him a professional liar. Right, They weren't happy in
Tennessee at USC left him on the tarmac, right on
(56:24):
on the line. Christian Boston, welcome in, Bernie Fradleshaw.
Speaker 19 (56:27):
How are you, hey, Bernie? Thank you for taking my call.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
You bet?
Speaker 19 (56:34):
Yeah, Lane Kiffin, he's just a jackwagon. I mean, I mean,
how much money is money? I mean, if you can't
live within your means and you need that much more money,
I mean whatever, I don't really care. People. I mean,
I'm from Boston were pro sports town people. The only
(56:56):
thing that comes out of our product of college football
was offensive lineman from BC and that's pretty much it.
Maybe a quarterback or two. But anyways, I wanted to
bring up a question for you, Drake May okay y.
(57:16):
He reminds me a lot of Joe Montana and now
I don't want to put him in the same class
yet obviously because he's just starting. But at the same time,
he's just like, you know, not that face is this kid?
Speaker 2 (57:32):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 19 (57:33):
He throws, he throws. He throws a soft, deep ball,
really good, a very catchable ball, like Joe did. Tom
Brady when he first started, couldn't not throw a ball
that was easily catchable.
Speaker 2 (57:49):
Well, you know, I covered Brady at Michigan. He was
twenty five as a starter. But we don't talk about great.
Why why you brought it up, Chris. Look, he's your
prototypical quarterback in terms of size. He's got a eat
arm talent, he's got way above average mobility. He's a
dual threat playmaker. But his best aspect to me is
his ability to see the field and process. Quarterbacks a
(58:10):
position you play with your eyes. He's showing a great
ability to make decisions under pressure. He doesn't play hero ball,
although he does sometimes push your limits. But he's so
talented at getting off schedule while while maneuvering through the
pocket that he's kind of a unicorn right now.
Speaker 19 (58:28):
He can get to his third progression, and that's not
an easy thing to do.
Speaker 2 (58:33):
That's because he has an understanding of coverages and the
defenses he's reading. Chris, I appreciate you checking in. We
got so many calls. I want to make sure we
get to everybody. Please, don't be a stranger. Thanks a lot,
Jeff and Denver.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (58:44):
How are you, Bernie?
Speaker 3 (58:46):
How's it going good man?
Speaker 20 (58:49):
Hey to the lane kipping thing, Hell no, that's the
most assonant thing ever. You quit, You left your kids.
You told him to stick with them, and who left
you did?
Speaker 3 (59:03):
I don't know if you saw that lame statement he
made as well.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
Bill Kower had had out comments and pretty scathing comments
this week, but they were just absolutely spot on about
the disgraceful behavior Layne Kiff.
Speaker 20 (59:15):
That guy has the most unethical piece of you know
what out there. I mean I saw the interview they
had him out there at the airport or something, and
he dodged every question. He wouldn't even answer her. He
was like, yeah, oh well yeah, so okay whatever.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
Yeah, right now he's got all the credibility of a
dermatologist with acney. I mean, I was just curious if
anybody out there would take up a case. Well, oh,
he built the team he did. All right, let's move
off there. Give me your thoughts on analytics, inflexible, ankor
guideline stupid more of a guideline.
Speaker 20 (59:49):
I mean, if you're like hit or minute on should
I shouldn't I you could take a look at it,
but it's not a way to go. I mean, you
gotta have know your players, know the situation, that stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
But it's good.
Speaker 20 (01:00:02):
Knowledge to help you make a decision.
Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
But it's not. But I feel they've gone too far
with it. I feel it's they've become obstinate with analytics,
and they become sort of this automatic decision regardless, and
I don't like it.
Speaker 20 (01:00:19):
I mean, if it's in a decent part of the
field football wise, if you can't gain one yard on
a play, then you probably shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
Be you know, you should always be able to least.
Speaker 20 (01:00:31):
Gain one yard if it comes down to that.
Speaker 8 (01:00:34):
It's depending on the.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
Placement in the field. You should be gained one yard.
Speaker 20 (01:00:36):
But this fourtune five, that's a different thing.
Speaker 3 (01:00:40):
But I don't know what was the other topic well
that you got to do.
Speaker 2 (01:00:45):
It was just analytics, you lid Kiff, and I appreciate
you checking in, Jeff, don't be a stranger man. Thanks again.
Martin in Orange, California. Your thoughts tonight?
Speaker 21 (01:00:56):
Hey Bernie, how you doing tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:00:57):
Good?
Speaker 2 (01:00:58):
Thank you, Lee Kiffin.
Speaker 21 (01:01:02):
No, he doesn't deserve a trophy if they win a
national title.
Speaker 15 (01:01:05):
But no, that's not gonna happen either.
Speaker 21 (01:01:07):
Mississippi will not be winning a national title.
Speaker 22 (01:01:12):
Ninety one million dollars.
Speaker 21 (01:01:13):
And I know Mississippi said they would match it, but
none of us, none of our listeners would walk away
from that type of money to switch it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
But but say Martin, he was off Ole miss was
matching it.
Speaker 21 (01:01:27):
I totally understand, but I totally understand that verning and
what I'm saying is to me, I mean, and this
is mean because I live in California, LSU, Mississippi.
Speaker 15 (01:01:39):
Louisiana, Mississippi. Same thing. Let me tell you what they
rank hyacaid low life expectancy, obesity, child is immortality. They
ranked lowis an education and economy. You know, boosters from Mississippi,
the booster from LSU. Why don't you take that ninety
(01:01:59):
million million and how about your state? How about your
state become a better state instead of painting overblown coach ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Million welcome out.
Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
You just just at the record streak. I like it, Martin.
That's it's all coming from private money. It's it's all.
It's all private money.
Speaker 22 (01:02:19):
Okay, private money should be funding the state.
Speaker 15 (01:02:22):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 22 (01:02:23):
They've got the money to get to a coach.
Speaker 7 (01:02:24):
Give me your state.
Speaker 15 (01:02:25):
They live in the state, Bernie, so let me get
to analytics. I agree with you that they're a.
Speaker 22 (01:02:30):
Youthful tool, that they've.
Speaker 15 (01:02:32):
Overtook them a sport, and I don't like that. I
just want to say one thing, if it weren't. If
it wasn't for like people would listen to analytics.
Speaker 22 (01:02:42):
We would have missed one of the biggest moments in
AOTS history, prevalent manager Lou Brown knowing that apartment owns
wild may One.
Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
There we go, a little man.
Speaker 22 (01:03:00):
You got it tonight, baby, I don't tell what you
needs me three years to live the Alps.
Speaker 15 (01:03:07):
I love you, Bernie, have a good name.
Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
Hey, don't forget to mentioned Pedro Serrano right beating the
evil spirits out of his bat. Good stuff as always.
It's that's why I love them. In that hour, man,
we get a disparate, disparate arrange, an amalgam of opinions,
as it were. David Phoenix, Welcome in, Dave. How are
you well?
Speaker 23 (01:03:31):
Hello, Bernie. If you'll allow me, I'm going to skip
over Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 3 (01:03:35):
Did you go ready to head?
Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
My friend, I'm going to go.
Speaker 23 (01:03:38):
Right to the college Football Playoff Committee and what they're
going to do here in a few hours.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
Go right ahead, Joe. I'm going to talk about that
later as well.
Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (01:03:46):
So, in my opinion, first of all, Vanderbilt and Utah
are out, and I think we know there are seven
at large bids and one of them obviously goes to
Ohio State. Now, when you get the that there's six
more bids, and there's nine teams that.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Are all fairly equal.
Speaker 23 (01:04:07):
In terms of their resumes. In my opinion, you could
almost include any six of those nine, and you could
exclude any three of those nine. And there are arguments
four and against each. But here's what I'm going to say, Bernie.
The number one thing we have to stop saying is, hey,
we beat this team back when they were ranked.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
Well, that doesn't matter.
Speaker 23 (01:04:29):
I know Penn State was ranked way back in South
Carolina and Missouri and LSU, and those teams all lost
at least four or five or six games.
Speaker 2 (01:04:38):
You don't get great credit for beating those teams.
Speaker 23 (01:04:41):
So I actually think Texas has a much better resume
than anybody gives them a credit for.
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
BYU. Maybe that's the problem.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
There's never.
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
You're right.
Speaker 23 (01:04:54):
So I agree that Texas will not get in.
Speaker 4 (01:04:58):
BYU will not get in.
Speaker 23 (01:05:00):
It's going to come down to three teams for two spots.
You've got Alabama Notre Dame in Miami, and the question
is which two get in and who gets left out?
And the more I look at it, I really think
Alabama should be the one that gets left out, and
I don't want to penalize them for losing a conference
title game, but I look back at their loss to
(01:05:21):
Florida State, which is about the worst loss than any
of these teams have had, and they just have not
played well even in some of their wins. So looking
at everything, I know it's a close call, but I'm
going to put Notre Dame in Miami both in and
leave out Alabama.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
Hey, real quickly, Dave, We're going to go off the
grid for a second because this is gonna sturt topic.
So I was in Michigan last week with my wife.
I just go back Thursday. Talked a lot of my
own cronies over at ninety seven to one. Not a
lot of people are happy with sher own more hate
to break it to you. And the other thing too,
is you paid twelve minute million for a quarterback who
was three or five at halftime in the Ohio State game.
(01:05:59):
Misis has two quarterbacks, Aiden Charles and the other kids
who's named too long. I can't pronounce if they both
played half a season. Both threw for more touchdown passes
than Bryce Underwood did for the entire season, so you're
heading in a collision course and this may not look
good next year.
Speaker 23 (01:06:18):
Here's the thing, also, Bernie, look at this way. Bryce
Underwin went over one whole month without throwing a touchdown
pass until he finally got to play Maryland.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
Again.
Speaker 23 (01:06:30):
Well, I don't know, but you also have to look
at the fact they played one of the all time
cupcake schedules this year, and amazing how bad their schedule
within the Big Ten was, other than obviously playing Ohio.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
Well, that was the other point of contention my cronies made.
He had three seat at your games, USC, Oklahoma, and
Ohio State and biffed them all. Yep, no doubt.
Speaker 23 (01:06:52):
And you look at the nine games that they won.
It's a really really soft nine games. I guess the
best team might be Washington, but Washington plays so much
better at home and bad on the road. And that
game was in ann Arbor. So is that your signature
victory for the whole year? I guess is now next year,
in the year after.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
They play really really tough schedules.
Speaker 20 (01:07:12):
So I'm not that confident.
Speaker 23 (01:07:14):
I'm not that confident that they're going to suddenly turn
it around and be able to make the playoffs for
the first time in the three years. Next yearly the
third year of the twelve team playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:07:22):
It's going to be a talking point.
Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
You wait, Yeph, all right? Appreciated Dave Steve in Kansas City.
Always worth the wait, Steve, what do you got for
us tonight?
Speaker 7 (01:07:32):
Hey, buddy, Congratulations to the Hoosiers and Kurt Signetti the
standalone Big Ten titles since nineteen forty five, that's for him.
It's pretty incredible. And then the new Kies the first
time since the eighty. I like to see the new,
new fresh blood in there. I too, believe the analytics
(01:07:54):
are getting out of control. Texas Tech was going for
it in the middle of field on fourth and two
and I thought there were nuts today, But that's that's
the analytics and.
Speaker 2 (01:08:04):
Robot Ohio State on the five yard line. They could
have kicked the field goal tied, they didn't, and then
they end up missing the field goal later. You think
they'd like to have a field goal try back.
Speaker 7 (01:08:14):
And Lane Giffn's totally overrated and I kind of and
I kind of wanted to agree with your last caller.
We're about to get Alabama shoved down our throats. According
to the All State Playoff.
Speaker 2 (01:08:25):
Predictor you think so because they've never had a three
lost team in there.
Speaker 7 (01:08:30):
Yeah, I know, I know they the playoffs. The percentages
say that Alabama's going in. I don't believe Alabama failed
the eye test. They should not be going anywhere except
to the Pop Parts Bowl. They are, they are not.
They're not better than than Miami. I don't get what
world you're living in. They're not better than Notre Dame
(01:08:50):
and they're not better than Miami. But they're going to
try and shove it down our throat tomorrow. So you guys, stay,
stay away or stay you know, we can boycott the
playof offer something, but we don't need We don't need
more Alabama.
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
We really don't be surprised if Notre Dame and Miami
both get in to Land and James Madison both get
in and Alabama does not, and then you know what
they'll do, Steve, They'll be on their way to the
Minute Bowl. It's a brand new bowl game. I'm starting
the minut Bowl.
Speaker 7 (01:09:19):
From your lips to the football God's ears.
Speaker 4 (01:09:21):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:09:21):
I hope, I hope you're right. Take care all right,
Thanks a lot, buddy. We're going to be continuing on
with the Midnight Hour. Felipe and Southgate, Clayton and Tennessee
will be joining us up next.
Speaker 3 (01:09:35):
Everybody's gone great so far.

it locked, It's the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox.
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
All right? Back in the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports Radio.
But another outstanding man that hour. Thanks to the great
callers or thoughts, we yuck it up a little bit.
We're gonna wrap it up with two more callers here,
uh give their final thoughts on the the analytics debate,
Inflexible anchor Guideline Good bad to be sick of them?
(01:10:32):
And Lane Kiffin. What if Mississippi were to win it all?
Because he deserves a name on the trophy. Felippe in Southgate,
Welcome into the Bernie Fraddle Show. How are you okay, Bernie?
Speaker 10 (01:10:42):
How are you going?
Speaker 3 (01:10:43):
Good man?
Speaker 9 (01:10:44):
Okay? So, in regards to the analytics, I believe it's
a good total to a half, but you shouldn't usually
just as the overall factor in your coaching and your managing.
We've seen too many your inizations try to do this,
and I feel like none of them are you to
win a title. For example, Houston Rockets with Antony and Harden,
(01:11:05):
they would just go off of analytics. They wouldn't shoot
any mid the ring jumpers and where does that get into.
Speaker 13 (01:11:11):
They never got They never even got to the finals too.
Speaker 3 (01:11:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:11:15):
I feel the Dodgers when they first hired Dave Obis
and they brought over Andrew Freeman, would just manage off
of analytics. Many times we would hear, oh, he's only
going to go five innings today, as just your starting pitchers,
when you didn't even know how the game is going
to go, you got to go off of the field
of the game and understand, you know, what's the situation
you really like, For example, I feel like these last
(01:11:38):
two words here, Dave Bobbers is actually managing off of
his gut and what he's seen in the game as
the game is progressing, rather than having the plan already
and playing saying okay, well he's not going to see
that the starting That's an.
Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
Excellent point you just brought up about Dave Roberts. Data
analytics will never replace, ever the need for intuition and Roberts,
who's established himself one of the best managers in the game.
He knows how to melt precision of data and the
wisdom of experience. Put it in two together over a
six month period. Continue on.
Speaker 9 (01:12:12):
Yeah, so I mean overall, I mean that's just what
I feel. I feel you can use it to help you.
Speaker 24 (01:12:18):
Especially in the regular season because you're going to play
a lot of bad teams, but come playoffs, you're just
going to play the best to the best, So you've
got to manage off a field. And in regards to
Lane Kiffin, I mean, whether you like the guy or not,
I mean, we have to admit that olden answer is
in the position they're in today because he's the one
that got him there.
Speaker 9 (01:12:38):
But whatever they do from here on out, that's how
the players and the coaches that are still there.
Speaker 10 (01:12:44):
He cannot get.
Speaker 9 (01:12:45):
Any credit for that, going cannot be on the trophy.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):
Right, good stuff, good call, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
Uh Felipe, don't be Stranger at midnight hour or Bernie
Fradle show. We wrap it up with Clayton and Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
Clay what are your thoughts on these two subjects.
Speaker 25 (01:13:01):
Bernie, I just want to thank you for having your shows.
I don't usually drive on Saturday night, but it's good
to have a live show on Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (01:13:08):
Listen right, great, thanks for listening in.
Speaker 13 (01:13:11):
Uh.
Speaker 23 (01:13:13):
I guess analytics.
Speaker 25 (01:13:14):
I'm a truck driver, and I guess one of the
things they taught me coming out of it is if
you live by the GPS, you'll die by it. So
I kind of, I guess I kind of would say
the same thing about analytics. I think I'm thinking about
that game. I'm an Alabama Cimpson Tide fan, and I
was thinking about that Clemson game in fifteen when when
(01:13:35):
Savan decided to do an on side of kick and
he just said, my team needs as fart and that's
why I called it. I don't know if he's taking
the analytics, but you know, you have things like that
as a coach because you know what your team need.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
Don't take away the intuition and feel and experience and
wisdom of coaches who understand the human element.
Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
I mean, analypts are a guideline.
Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
I can't tell you how many times I see team
teams do what the book says and it fails. But
one of my least favorite things in the universe is
a damn two point conversion. I mean, I know you
maybe it might have to use it at the end
of the game to tie a game, but.
Speaker 3 (01:14:14):
Before that it fails.
Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
So often coaches find themselves chasing points. Do you you're
down there in sec country, do you have any By
the way, Lane Kiffin pass to you Fair State one
point Tennessee another one of.
Speaker 3 (01:14:27):
His disasters, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
I mean, if if if Old Miss were to win,
like like Felippe just said, he got him there. But
I don't think he deserves a trophy if they win
it all.
Speaker 25 (01:14:40):
Oh you know what, Bernie, why don't you put him
in the room getting the trophy with about about fifty
different Old Miss rebel fans in the room.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
Yeah, yeah, that might not work out well for Lane.
You might he might be doing hot yoga from all.
Speaker 3 (01:14:54):
Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 25 (01:14:57):
The huts that he didn't won't, But I mean he
probably I'm assuming that he just they opened up the
war Chiff at LSU showed him how much in IL
money they had, and he went because, like you said, oh,
miss is going to pay him the same as far
as I can have the deal right.
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
And I've had people check in and say, well, will
they match the nil?
Speaker 3 (01:15:15):
Well, we don't know, we don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
I do know that the one thing about LSU is
that the top recruits at in their high school football
down there. They produced elite athletes, elite upper crust athletes. Yeah,
typically if you're from Louisiana, you want to go to LSU.
Not every hometown player stays already anything else, Clinton.
Speaker 25 (01:15:37):
Uh, well, I'm an Alabama fan, so all of you. Honestly,
I love the team. Since I was knee high to
a grass opera, I've been watching Alabama football. I've been
there through the good years in the bad years. I
don't think Alabama should be in the playoffs, but you
know they might get in because of I don't know
(01:15:57):
if you want to call it analytics or whatever, but
they might get in or them might not. That's up
to them. I don't say them beating any of the
other teams above them.
Speaker 2 (01:16:06):
H yeah, And I don't think all I appreciated Clayton Drives.
Safe out there, don't be a stranger. In about an hour,
I'm going to give my dissertation on who I would
project the college football playoff seeding, not who I put in,
but what I think the committee's going to do.
Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
And last year I just about nailed it. I'll just
give you a tease.
Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
I don't think Alabama and or Texas is getting in
because they both have three losses. And the best thing
that could have happened in Notre Dame and Miami Saturday
was that you know, both Alabama and BYU got completely
pull axed, and then Duke beat Virginia or Virginia would
have gotten in, So that opened up three potential slots.
(01:16:46):
I want you know, listen my final word on why coaches,
particularly NFL coaches, can't you simply rely on data alone,
the thing we call analytics, all right, I truly believe
in the human element.
Speaker 16 (01:16:58):
Data.
Speaker 2 (01:16:59):
Analytics provide coaches with what happened yesterday. They can't predict outcomes.
They might optimize plays over the course of a season,
and perhaps on the aggregate over eighteen games improve player performance.
But football is played by human beings, not algorithms. People
are unpredictable. No amount of data can account for every
variable in a game that day, weather conditions, player emotions, health,
(01:17:23):
how the game is gone. Intuition allows coaches to trust
their eyes and read between the lines. They can sense
when a player is fatigued. They notice shifts when their
opponents make strategies. They can detect when the right of moment,
when it's time to take a risk and not. The
great coaches take this as an art form more than science. Okay,
(01:17:47):
NFL games are dynamic changes it Changes are happening throughout
the game. Situations change. Coaches must make split second decisions
that can turn a game around. You have to understand players,
not just your physical abilities, but their mental makeup and
what's happening that day, how they handle pressure, how they
respond to setbacks. You don't know. There might be a
(01:18:09):
situation where you go forward on fourth to one on
a particular day and against a particular opponent, depending on
how the game has gone and whether you're outside or
insideer whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:18:21):
So you have to balance analytics and intuition. Those are
my thoughts.
Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
It's an inflexible It's not an inflexible anchor. It is
a guideline. Speaking of guidelines, coming up, our man, our
NBA guru, Mark Medina, comes up lots of interesting news
this week in the NBA. Thanks to all the callers again,
great man night out. Really appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (01:18:40):
Keep it locked.
Speaker 2 (01:18:41):
You're listening to the Bernie Fratles Show on Fox Sports Radio.
That's right, you heard the man Bernie Frawdles Show keeps
rolling right along. Come to live here from the Fox
Sports Studio or Fox Sports Radios studios in Las Vegas.
Take it to three and Pacific, six am Eastern. Thanks
(01:19:04):
again once again to all the great midnight hour callers.
Some really good discussions, some really good thoughts. But we
turn our attention to the National Basketball Association, where there's
always news. Yep, three ship of words.
Speaker 3 (01:19:17):
It's that time.
Speaker 2 (01:19:20):
Mark Benina, our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru and a
writer for.
Speaker 3 (01:19:25):
Essentially Sports, joins us.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Mark. I must start with the most delicious story is
so Clippers esque, and I look, here's the thing. It's
not that Chris Paul was released, and I don't think
it's any secret human TYLERU aren't exactly you gonna take
a hot shower together anytime soon. But here's the deal,
the way they did it to a future Hall of
(01:19:50):
Famer in Atlanta and three in the morning, Lawrence Frank
makes a special trip. What is the backstory as to
why they released him in such an unceremonious fans?
Speaker 26 (01:20:01):
Yeah, well lards. Frank the next day said in a
conference call that you know, the timing wasn't great because
the original plan was to see them and see him
in Atlanta much earlier, but there are a lot of
flight delays because they're playing had some engine issues and
he didn't want to cancel that meeting. But the reality
(01:20:24):
is this is something that you don't have when you're
on the road.
Speaker 4 (01:20:27):
You have it at home.
Speaker 26 (01:20:29):
And I know that this wasn't the first conversation they've had,
so I think from the Clippers perspective, they just felt
like this isn't going to get better. This is a
bad fit. But you're talking about Chris Paul, who's a
future Hall of Famer, and I get it when you're
not having a significant role as you once were a
number one guy. Your voice doesn't have the same landing
(01:20:51):
punch when it comes to brutally honest feedback. But they
should have known what they're signing up for number one
and number two. You know, some of his criticisms are
valid because their record has been terrible this season. So
I know that Chris through his career, sometimes when he's right,
it's not. It's one of those things that's not what
(01:21:14):
he says how he says it that can sometimes rub
them the wrong way. But the Clippers as an organization
has to be able to find a way to rise
above it so that they can at least, you know,
send Chris Paul out on a fare well to So, yeah,
this is a very bad Clippers look, and Chris Paul
isn't blameless, but I do put more blame on the
(01:21:37):
Clippers handle in it than Chris Paul.
Speaker 2 (01:21:40):
No fair enough, and I know I think they're going
to dearly miss that two point nine points per game.
But all the respect, he's a future Hall of Famer,
and I understand one of the incidents that inflame the
situation was a situation where it's department of redundancy, department
where I guess he in mid game, Chris Paul suggested
Kawhi Leonard to switch or to wait on a switch
(01:22:02):
because he wasn't warmed up yet to guard somebody else.
And the next day Jeff Van gundhi Or on the
team plane called him aside and said, hey, you may
have had that leeway elsewhere, but you don't have that
leeway here. So it sound like there was just general
tension all the way around.
Speaker 11 (01:22:16):
Is that fair?
Speaker 25 (01:22:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 26 (01:22:17):
And I mean Chris Haynes reported that nugget, and I
think what that anecdote encapsulates is that Chris Paul, you know,
his feedback is understanding Kawhi Leonard struggling defending Kway Thompson.
Even though Klay Thompson isn't the same player as he
was for the Golden State Warriors. He didn't have these
kind of breakout games, and he was, you know, being
(01:22:39):
a coach from the sideline, because that's what he's often
does as the point guard on the floor. But when
you're doing those kind of things, you run it by
the coach or you suggest it to the coach. You
don't tell your teammate to go against the game plan.
That's where things get a little messy. And again, the
easier rebuttal would be that defensive coverage on Clay didn't
(01:23:03):
work and they should have made those adjustments.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
But when you're.
Speaker 26 (01:23:07):
Adhering to the chain of command and trying to at
least show respect to the coaching position, you can't be
giving players independent advice. You've got to run through the
coaching staff so that they can consider it and then
apply it if they think it's a good idea.
Speaker 2 (01:23:22):
So here's a guy who's been in the league for
twenty years. He's played for eight teams, well, the Clippers twice.
After an eight year hiatus, he had his second go
around with the Clippers, played all eighty two games with
San Antonio last year.
Speaker 3 (01:23:37):
So my question is this, has he played his last
game in the NBA or does somebody take a fly round.
Speaker 26 (01:23:42):
I think someone will take a flyer on him, but
it remains to be saying who. First of all, the
Clippers haven't technically waived him yet and they can't trade
him until December fifteenth, But I would expect once December
fifteenth tips they'll find a team, probably a young and
coming team. Work's voice resonates more where he does find
(01:24:03):
a landing spot. But I think what's fascinating here you
mentioned his time with the San Antonino Spurs. I was
asking him when he was with the Spurs, you know,
what his approach was with the younger guys, and he
made it clear, Look, he's not a babysitter, he's not
anyone's parent, and he was very self aware that younger
(01:24:23):
teammates don't care about anything other than can you still poop?
And so how this pertains to the Clippers. Even though
Chris Paul's very outspoken, he's also very self aware of
that what matters is if he can still play a
high level and what his role is.
Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
But the Clippers, you know.
Speaker 26 (01:24:43):
Play has been so dire, so inconsistent, that of course
Chris is going to share his observations. And I think
that he felt he had equity because he was with
the Clippers the first go round. And so again this
illustrates that even though Chris isn't blameless, he is self
aware and the Clippers have to find ways to manage this.
(01:25:07):
And I think at the reality here is that whatever
frustrations they have with Chris Paul's delivery style, they should
have more energy and concern on how their actual play
has been it's been abysmal. This is a team that
thought they were going to be championship contending and while yeah,
there are injuries like Bradley Beal's season ending injury, Kawhi
(01:25:27):
Leonard of course being now the lineup, they shouldn't be
this bad and so more the energy should be focused
on that than opposed to you know, whether Chris is
delivering the criticisms in an appropriate fashion.
Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
All Right?
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Moving along with Mark Medina Medina Magic or Fox Sports
Radio NBA Guru, also writer for Essentially Sports. There have
been heavy, heavy, heavy trade rumors in traded media speculation
about Gianni's future in Milwaukee. No trades materialize, but it
sure seems Mark, like this time, where there's smoke, there's fire.
Speaker 3 (01:26:06):
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 26 (01:26:08):
Well, this has always fluid. Look, I've been proven wrong
with Johannis. I thought that he was going to be
shipped this summer because I thought eventually he would come
to the conclusion the right in a brick wall three
first round exits Damian Loward achilles injury. What am I
doing here? But he hasn't done that, and he's still
(01:26:29):
to this day, has never given the box a formal
trade request right, and I don't think the Bucks will
ever act on it unless they feel that they get well,
they get that message directly, and that there's no better alternatives.
So I talked with Marcus Johnson, though Bucks longtime analysts
before the season started. I know that you know, he's
(01:26:50):
rooting for the bus or self interest, but he knows
Jianni's pretty well, and he was adamant to me that
some of these cryptic comments and you know, hauling for
the front office to show more urgency, He thought of
that as more of just trying to push their buttons
to get the best rush around them both in the offseason,
leaning the tray dead line. But he couldn't see Yannis
(01:27:13):
ever having the stomach to leave because he's very loyal
to the Bucks organization. But also, even amid the frustrations
of early first round exits, the Bucks have made a
lot of win now moves to try to give Giannis
the best chance to win another championship. You know, getting
Drew Holliday, that was a win now move that obviously
helped in twenty twenty one. Now what didn't work, but
(01:27:37):
you can understand their rest of this. Getting Damian Loward.
So I think that the Bucks for an office is
messaging to Yannis if he ever changes his mind, is
they're going to say, look like we've hit on some moves,
We've whooped on some moves. One thing you can ever
question is our intentions and building the best rushing around you.
So again, I thought that he was going to be
(01:27:58):
gone last summer. I was proven wrong, and now I
think moving forward, while this is fluid and the Bucks
have struggled this season, I think he's staying. I don't
think that Giannis is ever going to give that direct
message to Milwaukee that he wants out. I think that
any meetings that he has with Milwaukee, it's just going
(01:28:19):
to be about what are they going to do to
make the roster better competitive? You know, lamenting the losing,
but it's always going to be about internal improvement as
opposed to saying that he wants out.
Speaker 2 (01:28:33):
Here's what's interesting. I don't have any source on this,
and it's more gud feel. Milwaukee's ten and fifteen. They're
two and eight in their last ten. They're really kind
of headed to nowhere, and you hear these.
Speaker 3 (01:28:49):
These rumors blowing in the wind.
Speaker 2 (01:28:51):
For instance, the potential Nick trade, which actually it doesn't
look horrible to me, but then you hear people reporting
and it's not just the Knicks. There are other suitors.
If the honest would ever say, which you probably won't,
that he's ready to move on from Milwaukee. So it
just seems like a stalemate. But it seems like someone
(01:29:13):
like the Knicks would benefit from an honest and Milwaukee
certainly would get assets back, including draft choices.
Speaker 26 (01:29:20):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I mean every team wants Yannest. I
think the challenging thing is the Bucks are going to
expect a lot in return, and I think that teams
are going to guard against gutting a roster to get
Janis as well as treating a lot of draft picks
because of what's going on with the second Apron. So
I think, you know, the Knicks would have to give
(01:29:42):
up a lot, but I think what helps is that
they have existing talent that makes it easier to stomach.
So if the Knicks ever get Yanis from the Bucks,
they would have to give up car on the Towns. Yes,
they would have to give up draft picks, but it
also helps that they have a good core in place,
have Jon Bruns and they have o Giadaobi, they have
(01:30:03):
Josh Hart. Where I think with other teams, you know,
you're looking at the Lakers. Of course they'd have to
get rid of Austin Reeves, they'd have to get rid
of other role players. But you know, while none of
those players are better than Yannis, it's going to be
one of those things that you know, is it really
worth it stripping the cover bear to get him? And
I don't think that for the Lakers is to their
(01:30:24):
benefit or for the Bucks, I don't think it's to
their benefits. So I really think the Knicks are that
loan team that actually have the assets to pull it off.
Where you're looking at teams like at Nanas, San Antonio,
Golden State, unless they're again stripping their cover bear, I
don't see what this accomplishes for either party. Although you know,
(01:30:45):
Brownie for you know what, up, you know what, I
take that back. I think if it's a straight up
one for one deal, it would match both in talent
and salary. It's a noble way.
Speaker 3 (01:30:56):
And if you're throwing an ass into the Google, you
might have.
Speaker 2 (01:31:00):
A deal there.
Speaker 26 (01:31:01):
That's true, that's true.
Speaker 2 (01:31:02):
Two for two for two for one, you know, yeah,
that's our attempt at comedy. Fifty billion people out of
the business, we're trying to break into the business.
Speaker 3 (01:31:10):
Listen along those I don't.
Speaker 26 (01:31:12):
I don't think Rob Polinka would have given that joke
to Milwaukee because they would have just hung up on them.
Speaker 2 (01:31:20):
Well, I listen, it's hard to say bad things about Giannis.
I like the guy, and you're right, who would want
him on your team? Something's really wrong in Milwaukee though.
It's broken and it's not going to be fixed this
year and times of waste and it just feels like
it's not doing anybody any good. Just to stand pat
but not my problem. Let's talk about Lebron. I don't
(01:31:43):
know what you were doing on January fifth, two thousand
and seven. That was the last time Lebron scored less
than ten points. And as we are always ahead of
the curve, we brought up this last week. I brought
it up to your thoughts. You know, the streak ends
at twelve ninety seven. We didn't see this coming. Now.
I think Lebron Hill actually helped his legacy. But a
cynical person, fortunately I'm not cynical Mark. We say, well,
(01:32:05):
the game was tied, so even if Hachimura misses it,
they're gonna go a team.
Speaker 3 (01:32:09):
He's gonna keep.
Speaker 2 (01:32:10):
A streak going, right, and then he can say, well,
that's that's how I've been my whole life, you know,
And he looks like a hero. But you talk about that,
and it really seemed to be a spark in this magical,
whimsical Lakers season so far. The streak comes to end
in somewhat ceremonious fashion. What was your knee jerk reaction
when you saw the story?
Speaker 26 (01:32:30):
Well, I think there's so many letters to this, so
you can look at this as showing that, look, Lebron
James is not the same player as he once was
in his prime, because there was automatic from two thousand
and seven to now at least scoring ten points. But
I think it's also symbolic that, you know, he is
someone that has gotten a lot of praise as well
(01:32:51):
as a lot of criticism for being that star player
that doesn't take hero shots, isn't intent on taking the
last shot before the game, and instead is on making
what he thinks is the right basketball player play, and
that is taking a shot if it's open, or pass
to an open teammate. And that's what happened. I think
the third thing is that this also symbolizes that, at
(01:33:13):
least from an x's and o's perspective, I think Lebron
is willing to take a back seat, not only to
Luka Dantch, but Austin Reeves. Now Here is the contradiction
that is Lebron James on the court. He's fine with
adjusting his role. It's always about off the court on
how much control is he willing to let go of
(01:33:34):
the locker room. You know, he did take a pay
cut when he joined forces with Dwayne Wayne Christ boss
or go to the Miami Heat. But ever since then,
he's his mind is he's never going to take a
pay cut because why he feels he has earned the
right to make max money. So that's where the challenge
is going to be. I think that again, from a
(01:33:56):
basketball perspective, I think he's mostly going to be a positive,
productive influence here. But what's always going to be the
elephant in the ruin this season is is he going
to be comfortable enough to announce retirement And if not
and he wants to come back next season, what what
does he deem acceptable as far as any kind of
(01:34:16):
hometown discount. So yeah, there's a lot of things to
unpack with that play, but that's always how Lebron James is.
Speaker 2 (01:34:25):
I think I've told you this story. It's a true story.
Two thousand and three, while I was residing in Michigan.
It took the two hour drive down to Cleveland, and
I saw him play when he was with Saint Vincentcine Mary's.
I told you that story, I think, did I know
you did?
Speaker 26 (01:34:37):
Yeah, but tell me.
Speaker 19 (01:34:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:34:38):
Well, but here's the part I didn't tell.
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
And I he you know, I noticed he had a
linebacker body, he had guard handles, and I said, you
could put this kid in an NBA game and he'd
probably be all right. And sure enough, six months later
they did. He dished off a.
Speaker 3 (01:34:52):
Lot of assists that night. Here's the part I didn't say.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
Lebron his junior year averaged twenty seven points a game
in high school. Now that's not any kind of world record, right,
That's that proved he was distributing the ball. I guess
somebody points to average the senior year twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (01:35:08):
So I had my bachelor.
Speaker 2 (01:35:09):
Lebron a lot, But it is in his nature to
try to make the best decision with the basketball. But
it's kind of the old Reggie Jackson line. He'll give
you the shirt off his back, but then they'll call
three press conferences to tell everybody he did it. He's
not going to.
Speaker 3 (01:35:21):
Retire anytime soon.
Speaker 2 (01:35:23):
You you touched on something Mark a minute ago that
I think is it's got to stroke the intrepid journalistic proclivities.
I know you must have. How much is Lebron pining
for an opportunity to sign with the Lakers next year?
Speaker 3 (01:35:39):
And what is his floor?
Speaker 2 (01:35:40):
And just Rob, did they really want to run this
back at any price? Really?
Speaker 26 (01:35:46):
I don't think it's at any price. So the other
thing that Lebron has made it clear when it comes
to interpreting the Tea leaves is that he said he's
not going to just always prolong his career just for
the sake of it.
Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
That I don't believe it.
Speaker 26 (01:36:00):
Well, I think here's where it is. I think he's
willing to prolong his career if he is still performing
at an all star caliber level and it's being treated
as an all Star caliber player, and what does that mean.
I don't think he's taking the Vince Carter route of
I'm going to keep playing even if that means omnow
(01:36:21):
a role player, or even if it means now I'm
going to start coming off the bench. I think that
he's content with giving the keys to Luka Doncic because
Luka Doncic is one of the premier stars in the NBA.
But I don't think that it's ever going to get
to the point that, you know what, now he's a
six man. So yeah, I could see him again coming
(01:36:42):
back as a number two option relative discount, but what
that salary number looks like. It's hard because the Lakers
also have to make sure they have enough money to
resign Austin Reeves, and they've He's shown that he is
deserving of whatever MAC contract he can get, and that's
(01:37:02):
where a lot of this is a gray area.
Speaker 2 (01:37:06):
I completely agree with Austin Reeves. Later in the show,
I'm going to talk about through year five his progression
side by side with Kobe's in terms of points per game.
It's uncanny. The productions are almost identical. And I will
say this, and I'm not sure to be a clown here.
We both know the NBA veteran minimum salary for a
(01:37:30):
player with more than ten years of time. He's about
three point six million. Even if le Brown said to
Rob Blinka, I'll play for three point six million. I
just want to be a Laker, I'd say, you know what,
I think we're gonna move on. We just we got
to move forward. The Lakers need to get better defensively.
They need to backfill in. You got Luca, you got Austin,
you got other guys. Even DeAndre Ayton's played a little better.
(01:37:52):
I just think he's got a goal. I mean, and
go back to Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:37:55):
Go back.
Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
Somebody will take you and they won't sit you on
the bench.
Speaker 3 (01:37:58):
That's just the way I see it.
Speaker 2 (01:38:00):
He's going to go out kicking and screaming. He went
a full year of Avery retirement type, you know, send off,
you know the farewell.
Speaker 26 (01:38:09):
Yeah, And I think to build off of this, We've
talked about Chris Paul earlier in the segment. I don't
think Lebron is going to be trying to repeat Chris
is path. And I don't even mean about you know
this past week hard. What I mean is, you know
you saw Chris Paul joining the Golden Say Warriors. He's
willing to come off the bench be a mentor with
(01:38:31):
the Santorian spurs young guys. I don't think that he's
of that mind to do it again. He wants to
come back another year or two or three. But as
long as again his his production is all star caliber,
his role is all star caliber, as well as the pay.
Speaker 2 (01:38:48):
Mark great stuff is always. You just never know what's
going to happen in the news cycle between now next Saturday.
That's what makes this segment so much fun. Thanks Royer,
help Mark.
Speaker 26 (01:38:57):
I appreciate you.

to a real happy moment for the Lakers. I'm Bernie Frattle.

Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Hi, We're back in the Burning Final show Fox Sports
or Radio. Just a minute, we'll get to the much
awaited Fantasy Files. We are eight hours and thirty minutes
away from Week fourteen to the NFL, and it is
crunch time, the final week for the playoffs start. But again,
Lebron's scoring streak ended the other night. His ten point
(01:40:29):
streak started January sixth, twenty oh seven. Lebron had the
ball in his hands thirteen feet from the backket with
two seconds to go. He could have taken a shot,
but instead of shooting, he passed to a wide open Ruyatamura.
Ruey hit the game winning three at the buzzer. Lebron
didn't necessarily have a good night shooting at a bad
night shooting. It was four seventeen, including five from behind
(01:40:52):
the arc, didn't make a single free throw, but they won.
The Lakers won. Luca was in Slovenia for the birth
of his child. Lebron James did have eleven assists and
that helped Austin Reeves to a forty four point nine.
It will go down is an amazing streak and it
ended with a walk off assist by Lebron James, who, yes,
(01:41:14):
the only man who ever played twenty three years in
the National Basketball Association. But I digress. All right, this
segment is important. Get your pens and pencils ready. You
know you want to win your fantasy league. My son's
in the playoffs. He's got to buy, but he's got
a dilemma.
Speaker 3 (01:41:32):
But be that as it may. Well, let's go to
the Fantasy Files.
Speaker 6 (01:41:39):
Fantasy Files with Brandon Deutsch, your go to fantasy football segment.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
Are you on one one?
Speaker 1 (01:41:48):
What is up?
Speaker 4 (01:41:48):
Guys?
Speaker 27 (01:41:49):
I am Brandon Deutsch on the Bernie Fratto Show. And yes,
as Bernie said, one week before most leagues start their
playoff matchups, Now I know a few guys that started
their leagues a few weeks ago because there are two
week matchups for each round. That's a very rare league.
Though I am on a buy in a few leagues
as well. Very thankful for that, considering I have four
(01:42:11):
to forty nine ers on one team and there on
buy and Week fourteen. But let's get into the much
awaited sid start suggestions. I want to start at the
running back position because RJ. Harvey has a pretty good
matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, and even though the
Raiders rank in the middle of the pack against the
run fifteenth one hundred and ten point eight yards per game,
(01:42:34):
I do like Harvey's usage over the last few weeks,
ever since Dobbins has ruled out for the rest of
the season. Now, he hasn't been that efficient, but the
usage is there, and he's getting one hundred percent of
red zone touches and he can only imagine that Denver's
likely going to be ahead the entire game, which means
they will run the ball with RJ.
Speaker 3 (01:42:51):
Harvey.
Speaker 27 (01:42:51):
Now, I would also sit Kareem Hunt against Houston. Houston
has the fourth ranked run defense and all in football,
only giving up ninety one point seven yards per game.
Don't love that matchup for especially a guy that they
only use at the goal line. Now he might get
a touchdown, Okay, cool, enjoy the eight fantasy points. I
don't think there's any upside for fifteen plus for Kareem
Hunt against arguably the best defensive line in the league
(01:43:14):
right now. And this is one that I've gotten a
lot of questions about that a lot of people are
starting in a pivotal week and it's Devin Neil against
Tampa Bay. Now, Tampa Bay's run defense is ranked six,
so you would think he's a sit right ninety seven
point four rushing yards per game. But Devin Neil, the
way they utilize him is a lot like vintage Alvin Kamara,
and in that sense, he's not Alvin Kamara. But he
(01:43:36):
catches the ball at a very high level out of
the backfield. And Tampa Bay's pass defense ranks twenty six
against the pass, so or twenty ninth rather against the pass.
So I do think Devin Neil has a pretty big game.
I think he's a solid flex option, especially with a
few guys on by. We'll stay in running backs here.
I don't like what he marks against Kansas City's top
ten run defense. Kansas City stole only allows one hundred
(01:43:56):
rushing yards per game. Don't love Houston in this matchup
to you ahead either. I would sit both running backs
in this game, Kareem Hunt and what he marks now.
A spot start that I like is Kenneth Walker against Atlanta,
and he could argue Zach Sharboney might take away a touchdown,
but Walker's been pretty effective the last few weeks, and
I expect Seattle to be ahead this entire game, which
means I think Walker actually gets a touchdown in one
(01:44:17):
hundred plus yards as well. I think Sharpon Ay also
gets a touchdown. I would sit Chris Rodriguez against Minnesota.
Chris Rodriguez's fantasy production is literally contingent upon touchdowns. I
don't love that Commander's backfield, especially with Jane Daniels coming
back taking away rushing snaps. I just don't like that
at all. Now let's get to some wide receivers. Chris
o'lave against Tampa Bay. Like I mentioned, Tampa Bay one
(01:44:39):
of the worst pass defenses in all football, ranked twenty ninth.
Chris o'lave should be a lock in start, you would think,
But I've gotten some questions. Should I start him. He's questionable.
We have to see whether he plays, But if he starts,
I would start him. I'd sit Romeo Dobbs against Chicago.
This wide receiver room, you don't know who's going to
go off each week. Dantavian Wicks had a big game
the last time they played, Watson had a few big
(01:45:01):
games before that. I mean, it's basically a dart throw.
Whoever you play a wide receiver for the Packers. So
I would sit Romeo Dobbs. I think he's gotten the
short end of the stick last few weeks. A spot
start I like in pivotal matchup for you this week
is eighty Mitchell against Miami. Now, Miami ranks middle of
the pack against pass defense. But Ady Mitchell twenty fantasy
points with Tarrod Taylor last week. Really like what he
(01:45:22):
can bring this week, and I would sit DeVante Smith
against the Chargers' second ranked pass defense. The Chargers are
only giving up one hundred and sixty eight point three
passing yards per game. Might be a rough going for
Jalen Hurts. I would start Jakobe Myers against Indianapolis's twenty
seventh ranked pass defense. Jacoby Myers has been nails since
(01:45:43):
showing up in Jacksonville. In fact, they've won almost every
game he's been there, and Trevor Lawrence has targeted him
more than any other receiver including BTJ. I know he's
dealt with some injuries, but I do like Jacoby Myers there.
I would sit Chris Godwin against the New Orleans Saints.
Chris Godwin is going up against the seventh bring past.
Even say what you want about New Orleans losing games,
but they have a pretty good pass defense. Baker hasn't
(01:46:05):
really done anything in weeks, and a mechag Buka is
bound for a bounce back game at some point. They
used Tess Johnson a little bit as well. I really
like what he can do on your bench this week.
Not in your lineup again. I'm Brandon Deutsch. Those are
my SI Star wide receivers and running backs for this week.
You can find me at BSD Takes on X. You
can find me at Brandon S. Deutsch on TikTok and
(01:46:27):
on Instagram providing fantasy analysis. Let's win our matchups. A
very pivotal week, Bernie, back to you on this one.
I want to be in the championship. I know you
probably do too, and your son, So.
Speaker 2 (01:46:41):
Brandon, let's talk about that because I haven't done fantasy
in ten years ago. My son Joey is a really
good team. He's already in first place in his league
and he's already earned a buy. However, three weeks ago
he lost Tucker Kraft. Okay, yeah, he was able to
replace him with Dalton Schultz, who's been serviceable. So we
don't like to talk about that. But now he's lost
Rome with Doonzay and he picked up Luther Burdon Junior.
(01:47:04):
He's going to start him Sunday. Your thoughts on Luther
Burden Junior. He seems to have better chemistry than DJ
Moore with with Caleb Williams. I don't want to lead
the witness here, but what are your thoughts about Luther
Burton Junior?
Speaker 3 (01:47:18):
Could he have a game?
Speaker 4 (01:47:19):
I think so?
Speaker 27 (01:47:19):
I mean his yacht, I mean, his yards per catch
is ridiculously high. He's a big play guy, right, so
all you need from him is three or four catches
for fifty plus yards and you're hoping it's a touchdown.
Rome's out, obviously, Rome hasn't done anything in weeks. They're
playing a good decent pass defense in Green Bay. You know,
they rank six against the pass, so they're actually pretty good.
(01:47:42):
Their secondary can be exploited, and we've seen that with
receivers like Luthor Burdon. I like it as a dart
throw option. I mean, I noted Ady Mitchell as well
for the Jets. I think to Rod kind of runs
that offense way better than justin field. There's a few others,
but yeah, I like Luther Burn and I had a
guy who picked him up in a for a laugh
matchup in one of my leagues as well.
Speaker 2 (01:48:01):
It's mainly a situation where we think there's upside potential,
and I think he'll get his share at targets now.
My son also has Marvin Harrison, who's nursing that heel injury.
But he picked up Michael Wilson, who's he'll start again Sunday,
who's been pretty solid with I think before last week
with with with Jaobe Brissett. But here's the question I
(01:48:25):
want to ask, So he's going to end up It
was after much dissertation. He's going to start Devon Vailey
tomorrow in place of Marvin Harrison because he can't because
Harrison's out, and I feel like he's got a fairly
good matchup against the Buccaneers on Sunday, but there's no guarantees.
Speaker 3 (01:48:42):
Your thoughts on dvon.
Speaker 27 (01:48:43):
Vailey, Yeah, Look, that's another wide receiver room where it's like,
it's Troy Franklin one week, you know it's it's the
next week it's I mean, there's so many different receivers
that go off right, Like I I it's again, it's
a dart throw. You're hoping for upside. I think your
son is the right mindset and trying to get that
(01:49:04):
upside right. But at the end of the day, probably
one of the two guys will go off. I doubt
both Valle and Burden go off. You know, that's the
only issue with that, which is why I would probably
want somebody that can. You know, I know he's playing
for the New Orleans Saints. Uh, he used to play
for the Broncos, but look he has he has Chris
o Lave there. Again, I don't know why I brought
(01:49:27):
up Troy Franklin. I was thinking of Chris o Lave.
Speaker 2 (01:49:29):
There are other guys we don't know is going to start,
you think he can because if a Lab is out,
Vailey would be the he'd be the guy.
Speaker 27 (01:49:37):
He'd be the guy for sure, right if and you
got Tyler Schucke at quarterback, and Juan Johnson's pretty good,
they use him. And I mentioned Devin Neil as well,
who they use out of the backfield. So even if
Olave doesn't play, there's no guarantee that Vala is a
big game. It's likely he gets the targets. But again,
you get a quarterback that's young, even against the very
poor pass defense, you never know with these things. But
(01:49:58):
I'm hoping for him to have big game for your
son's sake.
Speaker 2 (01:50:02):
So it's he doesn't need to win Sunday for the
way it shook out, he told me he's already got
to buy next week. He's already won the league. I mean,
there may be some points consideration. He doesn't let Chris
Godwin because he had him. He good got Godwin, He
had him on his league like three years ago and
he had to worst the season ever, and that kind
of stuck with him. You know, he kind of can't
(01:50:24):
kind of gets that out of your mind. So look,
he doesn't need to win Sunday, and I think it's
a situation where he's trying to figure out what he's
gonna do two weeks from now. But you know, happens
he kind of got lucky too, because he's going up
against the guy who had four players Thursday night.
Speaker 3 (01:50:46):
Dallas Dak Prescott.
Speaker 2 (01:50:48):
He didn't have a huge game, and George Pickens didn't
have a huge game, and a couple other players yet,
so they were all projected to get like sixty six points.
They got like fifty. So he kind of got lucky there.
Sometimes last thought, you find that the law of averages
evens out. Sometimes your team doesn't have a great week,
but then you're playing against the guy who has a
down week as well.
Speaker 27 (01:51:07):
Yeah, I mean a lot of it is luck. I mean,
one league, I was the highest scorer. I'm in six leagues.
One of my records is like I'm gonna miss the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:51:16):
It's six and eight or something, and I'm leading the
league in points. It's just bad luck.
Speaker 27 (01:51:21):
In another league, I'm middle tier in points, but I'm
eleven and two with a buye, you know. So honestly,
it's it's just about right time. Guys stepping up at
the right time, and hopefully you don't have a playoff
matchup in week eighteen.
Speaker 2 (01:51:35):
That's the only thing. That's the thing you just don't know.
That's not been My son a couple of years ago
had the highest league points made the playoffs, so they
got knocked out in the first round. But one of
those deals where you know his team would put up
one hundred and eighteen, he'd played the one guy who
got one hundred and forty that week and the next
week he gets thirty. So it's just just you're there's
some luck involved, all right, Brandon, appreciate it. The fantasy
(01:51:56):
football is huge, huge, huge in this in this world.
And you know you hear Dan Byer talking about his
team and Mike Carmer and those guys. This is something
that's that's quite the phenomenon, and it's easy to get
caught up and do it really is. By the way,

Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
Coming up well top of the hour, I'm going to
give you my twelve team projection as to not who
I'd vote for, but what I think the What I
think the committee. I hate that committee. Really, they're stupid.
Sorry I said it. It makes zero sense to me.
(01:52:54):
If you're going to have a committee, get different committee people.
I just don't like the way they conduct their business.
I think toward another Made for TV Invitational tournament. But
here's what I wanted to share with you coming up.
If the ACC get shut out of this tournament, remember
Virginia lost, I don't know if Miami's getting in.
Speaker 3 (01:53:13):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:53:15):
I'd put him in, but I don't know if they're
getting in, what will it cost the ACC. This is big, big,
big business.
Speaker 3 (01:53:24):
I'll tell you what that number is. Coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:53:26):
I'm Bernie Friderick coming to your line from the Las
Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening
to the Bernie Fraddle Show.
Speaker 1 (01:53:32):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:53:39):
All right, back in the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports
Radio coming to life from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio studios. We are are about seven hours and ten
minutes away from the committee announcing the twelve team college
Football Playoff field, which I once again I didn't think
I'd do this when he went from four teams to twelve,
(01:54:00):
calling it the made for TV Invitational. Again, if you
are a fan of the ACC, if you are an
executive with the ACC and ACC team, anything involving the
ACC are a casual. As they say, you're not probably
sleeping well this evening, they're bracing.
Speaker 3 (01:54:23):
These are the reality.
Speaker 2 (01:54:25):
If the ACC is shut out of the college Football Playoff,
they stand and lose upwards of one hundred and sixteen
million dollars in payoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:54:34):
So let me break this down.
Speaker 2 (01:54:36):
Last year, Notre Dame made about twenty million dollars from
the College Football Playoff.
Speaker 3 (01:54:42):
This year, the entire ACC could end up with zip, zilch, nada.
Speaker 2 (01:54:48):
That's because I am not predicting this and I wouldn't
leave Miami out, But I will say this, there is
a live possibility that the ACC doesn't place a single
team in this season's twelfteen playoff bracket. It's already the
perfect storms already underway. Duke an unranked Duke team a game,
(01:55:11):
feisty Duke team upset number seventeen Virginia Saturday night in
the a SEC Championship game.
Speaker 9 (01:55:17):
And so.
Speaker 2 (01:55:19):
It's likely or certainly very possible, not a single team
from this powerful conference will make the football playoff, and
that what will happen to group of six teams will
now not predict Again, I'm just saying this is the possibility.
If that were to happen, what's at stake about one
(01:55:39):
hundred and sixteen million dollars in performance based college football
playoff revenue distribution that the ACC would have no chance
of earning. All Right, conferences receive about four million for
each team that ultimately makes the college football playoffs, with
further payoffs as each round.
Speaker 3 (01:56:01):
Goes on.
Speaker 2 (01:56:02):
So, if you qualify for the college football playoff, twelve
teams get four million each. Right, if you make it
to the quarterfinals, eight teams get four million each. If
you make it to the semi finals, four teams get
six million dollars each, And if you make it to
the national championship game, two teams get six million dollars each,
(01:56:26):
So right there, that's how Notre Dame got their twenty
million last year. Now, there's no extra monetary prize for
winning the College Football Playoff, but each team would receive
three million to cover expenses for each round. Now, while
the four highest ranked conference champions no longer receive top
seeds in first round bys, they're still going to be
(01:56:47):
guaranteed eight million for the respective leagues, even if they
lose their first round matchup. Okay, if Virginia would have
beaten Duke, they would have gotten in and they would
have been in line to earn that automatic eight million
dollar payoff for the a SEC as the fourth highest
ranked conference champion.
Speaker 3 (01:57:05):
But Duke won. Duke won, and so now the American.
Speaker 2 (01:57:09):
Conference is set apparently allegedly, it looks like for their
eight million dollars pay day because Tulane, who's ranked twentieth,
beat North Texas in Friday's game and James Madison beat
Troy in Friday's game also, so they'll be the beneficiaries
of what the ACC might not be. Now, Listen, there's
(01:57:34):
a small chance the selection committee could decide to move
Miami up high enough and send these final rankings to
get him in that large bid.
Speaker 3 (01:57:41):
They've only got two losses.
Speaker 2 (01:57:43):
I think they deserve to be in. They beat Notre Dame.
I've never seen a situation people think Notre Damer is
getting in. So I've never seen a situation where two
teams with the identical record played during the regular season
and the winner stayed home in the loser advanced.
Speaker 3 (01:57:59):
But we'll see you're listening to the.
Speaker 2 (01:58:01):
Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. That's right, I
heard the man Bernie Frattle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Frattleick Kenny Lyon from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas, will take up
to three am Pacific six am Eastern, six hours and
(01:58:24):
fifty nine minutes away from Football's version of Selection Sunday.
You know, there's an little story about a gentleman walking
along the beach and he stumbles upon a little genie
in a bottle. He thinks it's a genie in a bottle.
It's one of those little bottles, and he rubs it
and out comes the bottle and he says, you are
(01:58:47):
granted one wish.
Speaker 3 (01:58:47):
And he says, are are you a genie?
Speaker 2 (01:58:49):
He says no, I'm God, really, He goes, yeah, and
you're granted one wish, but only one wish? He said, Well,
I'd really like to go to Hawaii, but I'm afraid
to fly. You please build me a highway so I
could drive to Hawaii. That's just wow. I never had
that one before. I don't show. Is there anything else
I could help you with? He says, yeah? Could you
(01:59:11):
please tell me who the college football Selection Pity Committee
is gonna pick on Sunday? God said, you want that highway?
And two lanes are four lanes? Does any of us
really know how this is gonna work? It was supposed
to be easier, but you know it was supposed to
(01:59:31):
me to decide it on the field. Head to head
is supposed to matter. Yet I've seen many projections where
Notre Dame is in and Miami's not. They're both tend
and two, and yet Miami be Notre Dame. Now, before
I get to what I think is gonna happen, and
believe me, this is a crapshoot, I can tell you this.
Speaker 3 (01:59:53):
I know for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:59:55):
There are three teams that aren't sleeping tonight Alabama, Miami
and UH and New and UH and Notre Dame. One
of them is getting left out. One of them is
getting left out. In Texas, I know that, Kurt uh
you know, the coaches is covetching and they're a three
(02:00:18):
loss team. They typically don't let three loss teams in.
That's why I see it, And it would be a
shame because Alabama went to the SEC Championship game, had
already beaten Georgia earlier in the year, but now they
got their third loss, and now all of a sudden,
they're gonna remember that Florida State loss Week one yet
(02:00:39):
dominated by a team unit up five and seven. But
I digress. Let's so let's get to it.
Speaker 9 (02:00:43):
This is the way.
Speaker 2 (02:00:44):
This is what I think the committee will do. Indiana won,
Ohio State to Georgia three, Texas Tech four, Oregon fifth,
Mississippi sixth, Texas A and m seventh, Oklahoma eighth, Miami ninth,
Notre Dame tenth to Lane eleventh in James Madison twelfth.
Speaker 3 (02:01:05):
I am hoping, and I met the committee is too.
Speaker 2 (02:01:07):
That Miami plays Notre Dame again, because there's been a
lot of backtalk going between the schools and on Twitter
and everybody's getting involved, and so that makes it to
made for TV event, And of course everything unfolded just
the way those two schools would want it to. Because
BYU got smoked, they're not getting in. And then Alabama
(02:01:30):
got smoked, which opens the door. And then wouldn't you
know what, Duke beat Virginia, So Virginia getting in. So
we'll see where it goes with that scenario. The first
team out would be Alabama and the second team out
would be Texas. Now, again, if Alabama gets in, I
don't know who they get in over, but you have
(02:01:50):
a three loss team over a two loss team.
Speaker 3 (02:01:53):
Just saying.
Speaker 2 (02:01:56):
There's just no easy way to do this because there's
no structures. Still very subjective as much as it's objective.
Under this scenario, Indiana, Ohio State. Indiana would be your
Big Ten champ automatic bid. Ohio State would be your
number two seed. They're an at large bid. Georgia would
be your number three seed. They're the SEC champion automatic bid.
(02:02:18):
In Texas Tech you're Big twelve champion. They'd be fourth
an automatic bid. So your first round matchups those four
teams would get buys. Now, your first round matchup would
be James Madison. They were the Sun Belt champion an
automatic bid. They're the twelfth seed at Oregon the fifth
(02:02:39):
seed as an at large. Tulane would be eleventh. They're
the American champion, they get an automatic bid at Mississippi
number six, tenth rank Notre Dame an at large bid
would have to visit Texas, A and m who receives
in a large bid. And finally number nine the Miami
Hurricanes at the number eight Oklahoma Sooners.
Speaker 3 (02:03:02):
This is all speculation by me. What do I think this?
What do I think the committee is going to do?
Speaker 2 (02:03:08):
I just don't know. I do know one of those
three teams I mentioned, Miami, Notre Dame, er Alabama is
getting left out. I truly believe that. And would any
one of those teams be Tulane and or James Madison. Yeah,
but we were told we were going to create a tournament.
You know, we saw this in Cincinnati few years ago.
They were undefeated. It's not whether or not those teams
(02:03:29):
have a chance or no one expects them to truly
make real noise or advance in the tournament, but give
them a chance. What other what other structure in any
sport around the world or in the United States, whether
it's professional or collegiate. And let's face it, this is
basically becoming more of a college football is becoming much
(02:03:50):
more of a professional football model now, much more resembles
that than any old college model. That you play your season,
you can go and defeed it have you cannot have
any designs on winning a national championship or even playing
in a tournament for national championship.
Speaker 3 (02:04:06):
What's the logic in that you go back before.
Speaker 2 (02:04:08):
In nineteen ninety nine, it was based on a committee
who would get into smoke fild room, put their heads together,
make a rock pile and vote.
Speaker 3 (02:04:15):
I will never forget this.
Speaker 2 (02:04:17):
The nineteen seventy eight USC Trojans the best college team
I ever saw. Let me tell you how good they were.
On that team, they put forty two guys that ultimately
would play in the NFL. Not all were stars, but
they they got to the league. They had two Heisman
Trophy winners in the backfield. Marcus Sarlo was the blocking
back for Charles White. Marcus Allo went on to win
(02:04:39):
the Heisman and run for twenty four hundred yards.
Speaker 3 (02:04:41):
Two years later.
Speaker 2 (02:04:43):
That was an incredible football team. Coach by John McKay.
They went down to Alabama Tuscer loose. The second week
in September, one of the most talked about games of
the decade, supposed to be the game of the decade.
USC was leaning twenty.
Speaker 3 (02:04:57):
Four to seven in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:04:59):
Bama got a excuse me, touchdown sc wins twenty four
or fourteen. Yes, he went on to win the Rose
Bowl that year they beat Michigan. Do you know some
it was between the AP and the UPI. One of them,
either the AP or the UPI, had the audacity to
vote Alabama number one over USC, even though USC had
(02:05:20):
beaten them soundly, soundly in Alabama. That's how it used
to be. No one wants to go back to that.
But then now you have this debated, hot debate between
two at large spots that's unfolding between again three blue bloods,
the ones I just mentioned Notre Dame, Miami, and the
(02:05:42):
Alabama Crimson Tide. Two of the three likely will be
the choices nine and ten. Will it be Miami, Will
they be one Alabama who gets ased out? And then
they go on to tellswold Notre Dame had a resume booster.
Why well, while the Hurricanes and fighting Irish for not
having to play during championship weekend. Boise State won the
(02:06:04):
Mountain West Championship game, and Notre Dame earlier beat the
Broncos this season twenty eight to seven. Okay, but they
lost to Miami on the field. Does head to head
matter Alabama? We're hearing narratives that the committee they should
be very thankful that the committee moved them to number
(02:06:24):
nine last week before the SEC championship game with Georgia.
It was some theorized perhaps are built in buffer following Saturday,
you know, and their lackluster play. Now it's possible Miami's
(02:06:45):
left out even though they beat Georgia earlier in the year.
Or the committee can simply move Alabama back one spot
and avoid the Notre Dame Miami dilem altogether. Some models
project Alabama to be in the final rankings, just ahead
of Miami for the final large spot, and by ceedy
Notre Dame in Alabama nine to ten. The committee avoids
(02:07:06):
the regular season rematch in the opening round of the playoff.
So again, so do you get the best teams that
ranked or is it it made for TV tournament? By
the way, Tulane the highest ranked group of five team
entering conference championship week and then they just completely poll
acts North Texas in the first half, never looked back,
(02:07:26):
and their coach is on his way out, John Sumraw,
but he's going to stay outill the end. Good deal.
Speaker 3 (02:07:31):
Tulane is on the road.
Speaker 2 (02:07:33):
The first round, most likely probably to have to face
Oregon and there'll be a double digit underdog. And how
about Kurt Signett's prior school and Bob Chesney's headed the ECLA.
And you know who would win the game? A five
loss Duke team who actually won the ACC title game.
Speaker 3 (02:07:54):
I'm mixed up. I thought there was a time, once
upon a time where.
Speaker 2 (02:07:58):
If you won your conference championship and you were in
a Power five conference, you were in an automatic bid,
not if your five lost duke team.
Speaker 3 (02:08:07):
Would Duke beat that James Madison team?
Speaker 2 (02:08:10):
I don't know. You can say that James Madison didn't
necessarily pass the eye test in their final Sun Belt
championship game against Troy, but they won twelve games this
year and that's four more than Duke.
Speaker 3 (02:08:24):
The question is see and this is tough.
Speaker 2 (02:08:27):
Can you have it both ways? They say that the
conference championship games have to matter, and they certainly do.
If Alabama would have won and they beat Georgia earlier
in the year, So why this is so mind boggling.
Alabama was in, you know, entered that game with a
ten and two record. Had they beaten Georgia, they'd be
(02:08:48):
eleven and two, so a win would have helped them.
I think certainly they'd be in, and also the Georgia
would be in, it won't be eleven to two. But
if the conference championship games matter, does that mean if
Alabama against her third loss, that matters too, Because you
can't have it both ways. You can't be helped by
a loss or help by a win, but hurt but
(02:09:08):
not hurt by a loss. Now, the team on the
outside looking in will probably go to a you know,
a prime bowl game, but they're not gonna like it.
They're not gonna like it.
Speaker 3 (02:09:23):
And you know, we've got the obvious ones up top.
Give it Texas Tech.
Speaker 2 (02:09:27):
They're a top fourteen, first twelve one season in school history,
a conference championship. They will not move ahead of Big
Ten runner up Ohio State in Sunday's final rankings. I
believe Texas Tech will be fourth. I believe Georgia will
be third. They'll move into the number three slot the
SEC champions, especially after their beatdown of Alabama on a
(02:09:50):
big stage in Alabama Atlanta with twenty one to nothing
at one point and the events their only loss of
the season against a good, not a great Crimson Tide team.
They're just not I think Kalin the board's doing a
good job. It's just brutal there, man, It's just brutal.
But do they look like Alabama to you? They don't
run the ball the way they used to. They don't
stop to run the way they used to. Alabama's lone
(02:10:12):
score came in the fourth quarter. They didn't play great
down the stretch. But listen and their three loss team,
I don't know what the damn committee's gonna do. What
I just gave you is what I think they're gonna do.
And I think they're because they're a three loss team,
they're gonna be left out. And I think and I
know Texas is going to be left out. Well, I
don't know anything, but I would be shocked if Texas
(02:10:35):
were in. All right, Ohio State will be number two. Look,
they won sixteen games in a row. They got through
the gauntlet of last season's playoff. As a low seed,
the Buckeyes are going to be one of the teams
to really beat this time around.
Speaker 3 (02:10:47):
They almost got through unscathed.
Speaker 2 (02:10:49):
Losing Indiana hurts, but the Buckeyes, hey, guess what, they
kind of been here before, Remember they were They lost
to Michigan last year and then Ohio State Michigan game,
didn't get to the Big Ten title game. And yet
look what they did in the playoffs one for all
four games by a cumulus sixty points. Give it up
to the Indiana Hoosiers. What an incredible finish. There's no
(02:11:12):
question that Indiana will be number one six hours and
forty six minutes from now when they start to announce
this over Ohile State their wins over ranked competition.
Speaker 3 (02:11:23):
This was their best win of the year.
Speaker 2 (02:11:24):
They dominated Ohio State frankly outgained them Defensively, they were spectacular,
Fernando Mendoza was spectacular. And yes, after all the shoutings
since mid August, Indiana is currently college football's lone unbeaten
team entering the postseason. After they knockoff defending champ Ohio
(02:11:44):
State in the Big Ten Showdown game, they will have
They will have the top billing. But at the end
of the day, and it's a TV show that's frankly
not really entertaining. Just tell us who's in. But they
have a tendency to drag it out and milk it
for all it's worth. The college football Playoff Selection Committee,
(02:12:06):
it's not going to be easy this weekend or whatever
they're doing. Maybe they're working right now deciding those final
at large spots because they're coming out a various conference
championship game results and Alabama had a one sided loss
to Georgia kind of unexpected, I thought, kind of intriguing,
and it's an additional data point for the committee. Will
they dock Alabama for their eyeball test against Georgia in
(02:12:31):
favor of Miami for their final spot?
Speaker 3 (02:12:34):
But they would be devaluating the.
Speaker 2 (02:12:36):
SEC championship game for the first time in playoff history
if Alabama were left out entirely in favor of either
the number ten or ten spots going to Notre Dame
and or Miami. But again, and I'm repeating myself, no
team in playoff history has reached the postseason as a
three loss at large nominee, nor has it at large
(02:12:57):
team lost multiple games by ten or more points in
the season, and Alabama did both. So there is precedent
for the committee dropping a team that was idle for
no reason. And this goes back ten years. I'll never
forget this. This is what you had. The four team
Made for TV Playoff Tournament TCU drop for number three
(02:13:18):
to number six in the final weeks in the final
Sunday morning after beating Iowa State fifty five to three.
The Big Twelve did not have a conference championship game
that year Florida State and Ohio State. That was the
first ever four team playoff made the season. If you recall,
I believe Ohio State lost their first game of the
year that year Virginia, but they went on to crush
(02:13:40):
Oregon in the championship game and that was Florida State
Ohio State, and you know that was their first the
first ever four team playoff. So we're meandering here, which
is what I don't want to do, but this is
what we're left with. We thought, well, things being slopted
the conference championship games, and you know it was really
(02:14:04):
originally written up as Power five conferences, but the PAC
twelve disbanded, so it's Power four. Then group of four.
Then at large and depending on where you're ranked still,
you may have a conference champion left out. You may
have a three loss team get in. You may have
a team that lost to their opponent. You both have
ten or two records, and the team and loss gets
in and the team in one stays home. Any of
(02:14:25):
those scenarios as possible. You want that freeway highway and
four lanes or two lanes. Because I don't know what
we're getting. I just gave you my opinion that in
fifty cents of get you a cup of coffee at
seven to eleven. If you miss any of Tonight's show,

And don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (02:15:27):
How right back of the Bernie Fradile Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to line from the Las Vegas studios of Fox
Sports Radio. Take after three am, six am Pacific. We're
just about six hours and thirty four minutes away from
the selection committee. And who knows what the hell they're
gonna come up at the end of the show. I
haven't thought about one particular team. No one's really talking about.
Speaker 12 (02:15:47):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:15:47):
And when I share this with you, you might think, yeah,
all of a sudden, they're lurking real quickly. The NFL
ratings just continue to go through the roof, and the
Thanksgiving ratings showed no ceiling. They shouted all prior records
for Thanksgiving Day of viewership last week, and there's no
ceiling to what's possible on the holidays. The league posted
(02:16:09):
an average audience of almost forty five million viewers across
the three Thanksgiving games.
Speaker 3 (02:16:15):
That's a massive.
Speaker 2 (02:16:17):
Thirty percent jump from the prior aggregate record set just
last year. Now, the Chiefs and Cowboys fifty eight million viewers.
That set a record for the most watched game in
the regular season in history, and almost matched the AFC
Conference Championship game last year between the Bills and the Chiefs.
(02:16:37):
Even the earlier afternoon game between the Packers and Lions
forty eight million viewers. In the primetime matchup between the
Bengals and Ravens not so much.
Speaker 3 (02:16:45):
Twenty eight million.
Speaker 2 (02:16:47):
But those all set new milestones for their respective broadcast windows.
Speaker 3 (02:16:52):
But the NFL they want more. The execs want more.
Speaker 2 (02:16:58):
Fox Sports President of insight Mike Mobilhill said, quote, it
was that long ago we thought one hundred million viewers
for the Super Bowls about as as it could go.
Now we're already approaching one hundred and thirty million new heights.
This isn't happening by accident, though the NFL has manipulated
things in a very shrewd way. For instance, they do
a lot of strategic scheduling. The NFL moved the start
(02:17:22):
time of the Packers' Lions game by half an hour
to one o'clock Eastern Time, and they were rewarded with
an audience even though it was less than the following
game between the Cowboys and Chiefs, easily beat the draw
for any other regular season game in history. Now, part
of that shift owed here that word prior analytics, which
(02:17:43):
were showing strong viewership spikes after two thirty pm last
year's Thanksgiving game of the Lions and that early window
anybody then. So the executive vice president for media distribution,
his name is Hans Schroeder, said the league is going
to continue to pay very close attention to all trends.
(02:18:04):
They'll be ready to you know, manipulate set their schedule,
how they perpetrate future matchups for Thanksgiving games.
Speaker 3 (02:18:11):
It's all on the table. But there are no.
Speaker 2 (02:18:15):
Immediate plans, for instance, to add like a say, a
fourth game to the Thanksgiving schedule. Right. But the commissioner,
Roger Goodell, when he took over the league after Paul
tag Leabou, I want to say it was two thousand
and six, he said he wanted to go the league
into a twenty five billion dollar league.
Speaker 3 (02:18:34):
And it's it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (02:18:36):
I mean, look at all the international stuff for the
merchandising and the you know what I just shared with you,
the the the pay for you know, the pay for
view channels. It's now on one final thing. They looked
very hard at metrics There was a conference call held
Wednesday with the three Thanksgiving broadcasters to talk about, you know,
(02:18:57):
all the plans and such, and it was kind of
a different sentiment right the league, their networks. They all
credit Nielsen Ratings for recent changes that actually capture viewership
data a lot more broadly, including an expansion for audiences
who are now watching the games outside of their house
(02:19:18):
so they their keeping score. And it's caught up to
the reality and the power. We realize something we've always known.
Sports truly has the power to bring people together. And
then numbers, they especially in the NFL, they reflect the
reality that's been here for as long as I can
never remember, and that is that sports bring people together.
(02:19:42):
But the NFL is showing no signs are resting. Well,
guess what, or one hundred and ninety three days away
from World Cup, we have our first draw and our future.
World of soccer started during World Cup twenty twenty two,
just before Thanksgiving, when the US faced off against England
on Black Friday. I believe they faced off against Paradway.
But here to tell us more about that. It's Chris
(02:20:04):
Purfett's world of soccer.
Speaker 6 (02:20:07):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes the international drum.
Speaker 8 (02:20:20):
Him.
Speaker 28 (02:20:23):
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
It is the World Cup draw. It is the time
we have been waiting for. Before we begin on that though,
we do have to recognize the MLS Cup champion into Miami.
After all this time, after all this attention on the club,
Lionel Messi, David Beckham, things of that nature, It's happened.
(02:20:44):
Miami has lifted the cup. The supporter shield this year
may have eluded them, but Miami was not denied.
Speaker 9 (02:20:51):
Here.
Speaker 28 (02:20:51):
Lionel Messi with two assists on this game as they
roll the Vancouver white Caps three to one, finally giving
the desired champion of MLS the trophy. It's hero moment
for Lionel Messi's Stateside and really the goal of li
oel Messi project accomplished. Now, how many watch more of
(02:21:11):
Lionel Messi?
Speaker 2 (02:21:12):
Will we see?
Speaker 28 (02:21:13):
Will he start to move towards the ownership roles that
he has wanted with the stakes that he has gotten
in MLS. Will it be enough to pull in more
stars to MLS as they start to make this transition
to align with the European transfer calendar, hard to really say,
it almost feels like an aftermath to talk about Miami's
(02:21:34):
big victory. Maybe it's because again it's on championship weekend,
and also for MLS fans, you might have been surprised
to us this weekend because it's moved around the calendar
quite a bit. This is not the big break that
sometimes MLS Cup would take before suddenly showing up again.
And unfortunately for MLS as well here at the editorial
desk for a World of Soccer, it does butt up
(02:21:56):
against some bigger news. I won't even be able to
get to the big news of Mohammed's Sala's very incendiary
interview that has really sent shock waves up and down
England as far as Liverpool continues to really show some
sort of nasty hangover in their title defense a three
to three draw on Saturday against Leads United, newly promoted
(02:22:18):
Leads United. We'll try to talk about that on the
next episode, because something tells me this isn't going away,
especially with the character that Sala is and especially with
the stature of Sala at Liverpool. I would encourage everyone
to go find out and see these comments right now,
because it is not all Roses over there for those
guys at anfield. But we have to move on to
(02:22:41):
the FIFA World Cup draw that happened on Friday. We'll
save Sala for next week, but let's talk about this draw,
which was I will be honest looking at the groups
right now, and we'll get dive into each individual group
as we get closer to the World Cup. But looking
at it right now, the first couple questions always come
(02:23:01):
to mind. Where is the United States, who has an
automatic bid this year, although I think their CONCACAFF record
would still probably be good enough to get them one
of the CONCACAFT slots into the World Cup itself. Where
is Mexico, the other great nation of North America? And
where are some of the European favorites? And which group
is really the group of death? Let's start with the
(02:23:22):
United States, who gets, in my estimation, a fairly favorable
group here they pull you know them, in Group D.
It'll be the United States, Paraguay and the winner of
the European Playoff Group C. Now, UEFA and FIFA still
have some slots to really play for here. The UEFA
Playoff C indicates it'll be either Turkey Romania. Slovakia or
(02:23:46):
Kosovo taking that last slot in there. Either way of those,
Turkey would be an extremely interesting one to have in
the group. But I've got to say this is probably
the best draw I could imagine for the Unit States.
Australia is not exactly a side that will really inspire
a ton of fear. I believe they lost one nil
(02:24:08):
to Bahrain and had a nil nil draw with Indonesia. Uh,
not exactly the world beaters over there in that side
of the world. Meanwhile, Paraguay is probably about the sixth
best team Inconboble in South America. Now, I wouldn't call
them as a slouch, but I think if you're looking
for one of two spots to advance, that's pretty good.
(02:24:31):
And as for the UWAFA playoff team there, Turkey would
be a bit of a live wire to really deal with.
But if it's not them, then you can really start
to counter chickens and start to really start to pencil
in the the the the the the knockout rounds for
the United States, assuming, of course, the United States actually
manages to show up, which there's been plenty of times
(02:24:52):
a year they haven't. Mexico, meanwhile, Leans in a group
with South Africa, South Korea, some some interesting h interesting
contenders there and the winner of UEFA Playoff D which
we either Denmark, North Macedonia, Czech Republic or Ireland. Their
main contest in that group will be South Korea. I
believe Mexico is ranked fifteenth, South Korea is ranked twenty second.
(02:25:15):
How that should be really one that stands out. But
again a group where I could see Mexico really moving on. Now,
who is the group of death? Who is the group
who really got a lot of uh has a lot
of trouble that we could really see some upsets going home?
Speaker 1 (02:25:29):
That would be Group L.
Speaker 28 (02:25:31):
And if you're an England fan, cover your ears for
this one, because yes you are England in the Group
of Death with Ghana, Panama and Croatia. Now United States fans,
you'll recognize Ghana immediately and go oh no England if
you haven't faced them before.
Speaker 1 (02:25:48):
Ghana is nasty.
Speaker 28 (02:25:50):
They have always shown up from Africa to ball out
and ruin someone's day at the World Cup. Panama, meanwhile,
has been an extremely feisty Conca cast side.
Speaker 1 (02:26:03):
Maybe not the most.
Speaker 28 (02:26:05):
Successful, but they can definitely do what we like to
call the Conka calf you. They can really just drag
you into the mud, make you play at their level.
Shouldn't be a problem for England, but Croatia. Croatia is trouble.
Croatia who finished third last World Cup and we're in
the final for the World Cup prior in twenty eighteen.
(02:26:25):
They lost to France that year. Yeah, France, this is
not a cakewalk for England and I could honestly see
them going out in the group stage if their touches
don't go right. I am very down on England this
particular World Cup. And meanwhile, the group I am most
interested to see right now would be Group I, which
is Senegal, France, Norway and the winner of an intercontinental
(02:26:48):
playoff between a rock O Bolivia and Surinam. Now those
guys really don't matter. But Norway with Earling Holland against
Killian Embape on the French side, that's some of my
favorite favorite matchup. I am going to probably have this
entire World Cup. We'll keep digging into this and more
next week on the World of Soccer.
Speaker 3 (02:27:08):
There you have it, so this we know for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:27:10):
Mark Lee Calendar, June twelfth, twenty twenty six six pm
Pacific time USA. We'll kick it off against Paraguay in
Los Angeles, part of the Group D group stage one
week later at noon June nineteenth, twenty twenty six, USA,
and Australia six days later to be determined. We don't
(02:27:32):
know who the fourth entrant will be in the Group
D stage. I don't know, man, I'm just gonna wait
and see. We had real high hopes in twenty twenty
two for that first match against England on Black Friday. Yeah,
not so much, but hope springs eternal, right, maybe they
can hire Kurt Signetti or something like that. Coming up.
(02:27:54):
We wrap up the show and I share with you
one particular team a takeaway from Saturday's Conference championship games
that is very much peaking at a dangerous time and
not a lot of folks are talking about them, but
we will come it up. I'm Bernie fraddlewic Kemedy Line

great job tonight, keeping us glued together, keeping us on

think the folks at Ohio State will sleep well tonight either,
(02:29:05):
not because they're not.
Speaker 3 (02:29:06):
Going to the playoffs and probably be the number two seed.
Speaker 2 (02:29:08):
They show their big ten championship hopes go wide left
to the goal post Saturday against Diana. Against Indiana, you know,
the Buckeyes had a fourth and one at Indiana's nine
with under three minutes left in the game, and they
did the smart thing by kicking the field goal because
in playing it safe, I realized it didn't work out.
(02:29:31):
But I think eight minutes earlier they were in a
relatively similar situation, and you know, I'm sure the analytics
told them to go for it, and they'd failed on
fourth down and so the game could have already been tied.
But I digress, I digress. We had an excellent conversation
during the men that hour Saturday Night. Pertaining to analytics,
(02:29:53):
are they an inflexible anchor or? They should just be
a guideline. We've gone too far allowing professional men who
do this for a living to put their intuition in
wisdom on display again. Analytics tell you what happened yesterday,
not tomorrow. I'm not against them, I just think you
(02:30:15):
can't use them.
Speaker 3 (02:30:16):
Carp Blanche. They're a guideline, not an inflexible anchor.
Speaker 2 (02:30:20):
Now. I gave them my flowers to Indiana as well,
they should get them as well.
Speaker 3 (02:30:28):
They should get them.
Speaker 2 (02:30:29):
What Indiana did Saturday night is nothing short of a miracle.
When you look at the timeline of where they were
two years ago. Their last share of the Big Ten
championship was forty eight years ago. The Hoosiers checked that
fifty eight years ago. The last time the Hoosiers won
a Big Ten title out right was eighty years ago,
(02:30:50):
and they hadn't beaten Ohio State since I think Reagan
was finishing up the second term. Kurt Signetti has an
uncanny ability to do something that other people just came through,
not only turn a program into a monster, but do
it virtually overnight. He came out of the Gate with
Reggie Jackson. Like Braggadoccio, he said Google, I win, Google me,
(02:31:13):
and he's backed it up. Then some Last year was
a pretty eye popping year. Remember they're twenty four and
two over two years. They only launched to Notre Dame
in Ohio State last year, and this year they've avenged
the Ohio State loss. And it's not that Indiana just
hung with the Buckeyes. They out gained them on offense,
held the Ohio State Buckeyes to fifty eight yards rushing.
(02:31:36):
You don't do that. That hasn't happened in fifteen years.
The Hoosiers owned the trenches, five sacks, nine tackles for loss.
The Ohio State offense, which has been pretty good, only
ran fifty six plays. And for Nana Mendoza, not only
is he going to be on that flight to New
York for the Heisman celebration or the Heisman Awards ceremony,
(02:31:58):
he should be working on his each because if he
doesn't win it, I don't know who does. I don't
know how you vote for anybody else over him. Fifteen
to twenty three for two twenty two in a touchdown Saturday.
But what I had noticed most again. It's the old thing.
Can you be great when the situation demands greatness? And
he was.
Speaker 3 (02:32:18):
He made multiple Fernanda Mendoza made multiple high level throws
in the second half to secure the win. Now, you
can be sure Indiana in about six hours and eleven
minutes from now, when they start the program that made
for TV event, they will be the number one seed.
And I would say they could have a rematch with
(02:32:40):
Ohio State, but it wouldn't be till the national title game.
Speaker 2 (02:32:44):
That's the way I'll see it. Or is it possible?
Tell me this wouldn't be juicy Indiana versus Georgia. All right?
Have you noticed that Kirby Smart, very quietly in the
past few weeks and months, has really asserted itself in
(02:33:10):
a way that's somewhat methodical but very impressive. See now,
for the second year in a row, Georgia heads to
the College Football Playoff as the SEC champion.
Speaker 3 (02:33:21):
That is no small feat.
Speaker 2 (02:33:24):
The outcome is the same as last year, but the
vibe around the Georgia Bulldogs this year is tremendously different
from last year's team.
Speaker 3 (02:33:34):
If you recall.
Speaker 2 (02:33:37):
Last year, Georgia kind of limped into the college football
playoff quarterfinals versus a Notre Dame team. They were hampered
by a litany of injuries, notably to their quarterback Carson Beck,
who's now with Miami. And we'll see you hear in
my commentary earlier, we'll see if Miami gets in batmant
(02:33:58):
Gunner Stockton was making his first career start in a
quarter final playoff game versus Notre Dame. And that's the
scenario that well, they fought, but eventually they do a loss.
This year, what a year difference makes. Gunner Stockton is
leading the Bulldogs back into the college football playoff and
(02:34:22):
they exercised their Alabama demons in pretty impressive fashion on Saturday.
They won by three touchdowns. They were shutting Alabama out
to the fourth quarter and the SEC game kind of
turned into a bloodbath because Stockton through three touchdowns and
the defense really kind of exposed what has appeared to
become a somewhat overmatched, Crimson tied offense. With all due
(02:34:45):
respect to Alabama, they don't seem to run the ball
the same way they used to, and they don't defend
their run the same way they used to. Now Georgia's
biggest issue earlier this season was a less than stellar
pass rush that was getting not much pressure, in fact,
almost zero pressure on the quarterback. That was evident in
their first matchup with Alabama. They posted just one sack
(02:35:08):
on that loss. But Saturday Georgia had three sacks, four
quarterback hurries, and they bothered ty Simpson all day long.
They affected ty Simpson's ability to find open receivers and
that pressure forced ty Simpson to misfire on numerous occasions
when he had open receivers. I believe the bracket will
(02:35:28):
most likely show Georgia in the same place as last year,
a first round by into the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. However,
Saturday showed us this is a very different Georgia Bulldog
team waiting for their opponent, and they should be considered
very much on the short list to win the national title.
(02:35:49):
Georgia is peaking at the various dangerous time. You've been
warned by the way. I haven't mentioned Texas Tech that
defense based on what I'm seeing the speed on both
sides of the ball, I hadn't seen them enough in
a granular fashion the way I watched them Saturday, Texas
Tech actually poses a legitimate threat. Also to win the
(02:36:11):
college football playoff thanks to Yes, an elite defense. Now,
Ohio State's probably the elite defense which all others are
measured by in the college football playoffs. But as bum
Phillips once said, I don't know, it's at the top
of the class, but it don't take long to call roll.
Texas Tech is right behind him, right, He just doesn't
(02:36:33):
roll off the tongue right anymore than Duke in Indiana
or basketball school as well, they're football schools now too.
Speaker 3 (02:36:39):
Both came up big Saturday, So it's.
Speaker 2 (02:36:41):
Perhaps been awkward and unusual for a lot of people
trying to let the Red Raiders roll off the tongue
led by an astounding defense, especially when Mike Leach had
that fabulous offense all those years, and they've had guys
like Patrick Mahomes and Graham Harrold and Cliff Kingsbury who
through for about forty thousand yards. But Joey McGuire, they're
(02:37:04):
head coach at Texas Tech. This is a different program now.
It's a smash moub team and they squeeze the life
out of you if you get in their way. This
is gonna be a very fun college football playoff I'm
glad it's here. What I do think, though, is there
are going to be some very nervous fans on Saturday,
and someone's going home pissed off in about ten hours.
(02:37:25):
What can you do. It's going to be another made
for TV invitational tournament, but we're all here for. It's
going to do it for the Bernie Frattle Show. I'll
see you next week. Keep it locked up next They're great.
