offensive line minds, current NFL players, the greatest some of
the greatest NFL players, some of the legends of the

past seeven, some young kids, some of the yuppucombers from
high school, all in convene in Texas to talk about it,
and my man Jeff was front center.

We say, buddy, good morning, going to be back with you.
It was a fun weekend besides the mass round talking
about second. I went to a went to a Rangers
game for my birthday. My wife got us a box,
which is like so much fun. I don't know if
I can ever go back and watching baseball another way.
It's like, oh, oh, you just like sit up here
and have fun with forty of your friends.

That was fun. Oh you had a so all you
guys went and got a box. Yeah.

So it was my birthday. So after the mass runs
O we went to dinner.

On Saturday night, we went to a cigar bar and
then it was funny because we were in a cigar
bar and we were like, oh, oh, the grecord fight
is on. Let's uh, let's find it. And then like
we looked at our phone and we're like, oh, it's
over ready.

Yeah, we.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Did not put it all.

Let's go.

And then Sunday we went to a Rangers game. My
wife got us a box like kind of behind home plate,
and we had like we didn't have a We had
like maybe twenty people there, and then we had some
people that we knew from in town, like just invite
your friends, like and we just sent them tickets and
they just showed up. So we had fun. We had

like the box seats forty people. So we're just like,
why don't we have people show up who cares? Like
the food and drink are paid for what people show
up and drink some of our beers that we have
for them, So we haven't. We had a big crew.
They went to He's a fun game too, We're trying
to walk off win. So it was it was a
fun week. And yes, Masterminds was awesome as usual. It's
an interesting mix of players because it's you know, it's

turned more into a lot of veterans were there. So
obviously Baldi was there as usual. He's low down, He's great.
Baldi's awesome. Jim Bo Colbert was there this year as well.
I don't realize he only played I he only played
nine years, but he made like seven you know, all pros.
A champion in the Hall of Famer. Aaron Taylor was there.

Aaron might be the best offensive lignment and during any history.
He won't say that, but like by awards and prestige,
he is, even though you know, Quentin Nelson probably the
best not name aligneman ever, but Aaron it was like
a two time unanimous All American, which is nearly impossible
for offensive lineman. Go look at the history of that.
Aaron Taylor was there. I love at and it was

Zach Martin was there former Dallas. Yeah, we were at dinner.
We were at dinner the first night Masterminds went to dinner.
It was some of my not to say house it was.
It was a yeah, it was against the sense. It
was my group of people, like my friends and family.
They were there, and then Duke was there, who runs it.
And then Zach Martin came and for a few minutes,

since Duke and Zach were going somewhere else to meet,
I was just telling my wife, I'm like, that's that's
the greatest. That's the second greatest guard to ever play football.
That guy at the end of the table, second greatest,
second best guard behind Larry Allen of all time, right there,
Zach Warin, right, the nicest guy of all time.

Lane obviously was awesome being there to hear Lane talk.
Trace was there, Quinn Miners, I know from the Quinn
for and Trey for a little bit of time. Now.

first year we did it, we we ended up with

older guy. There's gotta be one more in Creed Humphrey
those Creed too, Yeah, those are five. It's just guys
the Duke's training, right, So that was part of the
appeal to that. And so I've known Treying Quinn for
a while. Now it's it's interesting to see, like, you know,
they're in year seven now, like how much more mature
they are and just like different you know people they
are than when I met them when they were twenty

one and twenty two years old. So if you're good
to talk to them. And it's always the best weekend. Man,
Well year ten, next year. So we've we've made a
coin event.

Oh it's no, it's unbelievable.

I get to In fact, Tuesday, uh wait I had
launched with Baldy and Spags was uh.

So I met up with Spags and Baldy and Baldy
was talking about the line master minds and what it
was like.

He actually Kate flew in from the Sack in Vegas.
He did, you guys, because he came and talked about
the Sacks summit for a little bit. He was with
the enemy. Yeah, well the past. Baldi loves, loves, loves
ball man. He's at any any of that, I'll give you.
Let's I love Baldi. So the Oklahoma offensive line was there,

and there the entire offense. I think I think they
were there. Arkansas was there, Missouri was there. There were
some offensive lines that were just the whole group was there.

Previous years we've had Alabama all there, working guys there.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
All those kids from Bama. It's amazing because that right line,
that and that whole line. Why am I being you know,
really good NFL players? They all they were all there. Yeah. Wow.

And like Keadan Proctor was there last year and he
ended up being a twelfth pick in the draft. So
so Baldi just like you know, he has this film.
He just pulls up his computer right pulls out. It
pulls out like a random play from Oklahoma Tennessee. Tennessee
is running this exotic pressure and he just just like
spent ten minutes talking with Oklaho offensive line about how
they they sorted this pressure.

Like Baldi just he just like he just is the
right lovely man.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
He just loves loves it, love it, great at it.
He's great, He's great. But like he just like he
just like and then they talked put the clip out.

There was sitting around I think I think I was
actually there a video where there were a video and
me I just kind of slowly backed down of the picture.

and they were talking to Oklahoma's offensive line.

being a defensive coordinator, was interested in Zach Summitt and
he goes, he goes, I want to do the d backs.
He goes when I retire, I want to do the

defensive backs. And he goes, We'll do the d back summit,
you know, and he honestly.

Like, it's it's not it's interesting like what gets talked about, right,
Like it's it's a lot of just you know, for
coaches and players that are there just hearing new ideas, right.

And I remember one year Willie RoAF was there, right.

A Hall of Famer played with the Saints and the Chiefs,
and we were we do all Hall of Fame panel,
you know, they interview the players and whatnot. And I
remember Willie RoAF they asked him some question about the
the finding moment of his career. I don't know what

the right question. It's something about how you know that,
what was something that pissed you off? Or like major
the player you are, I know, something like that. And
he talked about leaving the Saints and how he went
to Kansas City and he was like in tears, how
angry he was about how it went down to New
Orleans and like legitimately like like teary eyes, like upset, right,

and it made a lot of us, like myself, it
was not Willie RoAF at all, like oh wow, like
this Hall of Fame guy feels exact same way I
do about being cut. He got traded, but like losing
his you know, like like a team not believing you anymore.
And that is something I didn't know that guys like

him felt that way. But I didn't realize that players
that their Hall of famers felt the way that I
do when I got cut. He got traded, but you
know when it when a team lets go of you essentially,
and like it made it made me give a different appreciation.
I just think that better players are robots, bro like,

just like they're like they just don't have feelings right now.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
Of course they do.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
But they're just like mythical creatures, right because they're just
so good that how can they feel the same way
you feel? And it was like really like, oh man,
we all kind of feel the same about Well, I'm.

Glad you brought that up because you know what's interesting
about that. The way you felt about those great players
is the way fans feel about any professional player, right.
And I have this conversation with you know, people all
the time.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
And whether it's like on the radio or whatever or whatever.

It is, and you're meeting people these functions and all
them we get to talk about something, you know, athletes
and you know who who's a favorite athlete?

Speaker 3 (09:52):
What's this guy like and that guy like?

Speaker 1 (09:55):
And like you want to tell like and I always
tell him like listen, you know through dudes, they're people,
right like just like you, Like, there's nothing different other
than that's their job and that's their life. And this
is you know, they have the same disappointments, the same thing.

You know, listen. Did they have a different lifestyle? Yeah,
of course you're an athlete. You're a professional athlete. Some
guys were making ridiculous money, right, but it doesn't. It
doesn't mean there's no feelings or like, you know, I
try to explain that like people are like, it's it's
people and like you you you felt that way about
great players in that situation, and I think that's what

how fans think about athletes in general.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, I mean I've had those experiences a little bit
over my career. I remember when I got to Carolina,
Jordan gross Are left tackle, was really good, multiple time
Pro bowler. He was planned under the franchise tag I used,
and I thought to myself, like, man, this is good
for him. It was getting ten million dollars a year,
like in one season, like you know, I'm a rookie.

(11:06):
Like I was like, well, good, good for you. I
remember I made some comment like that to him. He's like, dude,
this stinks.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Man.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
He goes, I have so much pressure on me to
perform at a high level for one year to get
the contract that I deserve.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Right, I don't.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
I don't want this, Like yeah, the money is the money,
but like I'd rather get my long term contract again,
like sort of like change my mind. I changed my
opinion on that because I was like, oh okay, like that,
like he was not happy to play the frame. He
was like, I'm like, oh, he's making he's making ten
million dollars. Man, this guy must love life. And he's like, no, no, no,

I don't.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
It really changed my opinion on a lot of things
like it, because you know, when you're young, you're like, oh,
it's all about the money, and he's like, yeah, no, no,
that's not what it's about.

Yeah.

Yeah, you got to go through that song.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
That's that's that was your maturity, going through your maturity process.
Interesting it is. It is fascinating. I love that you
guys do that stuff. I uh, today's player. It's so
interesting because I love the mindset of today's athlete. It's

a lot about your craft and a lot about getting better,
exchanging ideas. It's very smart. It's intelligence. Listen, guys are
still we got a couple of knuckleheads, but for the
most part, I think guys are working hard. It's different.

(12:39):
When I first came into that, it was, you know,
guys are just partying at like it was just about
the party.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Like it was, Hey, we're gonna play, but you know
we're gonna live fast, right, Like we're gonna live We're
gonna go home, go.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
At it hard. Guys don't go at it hard. Like
now that got guys are more cerebral about the game
and of course about they're taking care of their bodies.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
It is such a big difference in the sport now.
I was explaining to someone, I forget where it was
about the way.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Oh, actually, you know what.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
We talked about this at the at the event. That's
what it was, they asked, at the panel we did.
And so again it was like jimb O Colvert, Lane Johnson,
Zach Martin, Scott Wells, Aaron Taylor and Aaron and Aaron
was moderating it, and Aaron asked, like, you know, talk
about your luck recovery, like right, and so Jimbo Colort

was like, yeah, a beetball sandwich at three beers, Yeah, yeah.

And then Lane was like red light.

Therapy stretching yea cold tubs contrast and Ivy like it
was like it was like it was it was such
a different time that you know that this just not
what players do anymore. They're way more conscious of their body.

And so.

I love it because I think it's extended careers. But
you know a lot of times players wait until they are,
you know there it's too late, right, It's too late
to do that in their careers because they you know,
when you're young, you just don't have any pains essentially, right,
and so you just don't you don't worry about a

massage therapist or rehab guy. And then the more you
get hurt, obviously, the more you start feeling like, I
got to get some treatment done on my body. And
typically guys do it later, but guys are starting just
much earlier now doing those things. Yeah, man, it's true,
you know.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
And but just the idea of oh my masterminds is
a fascinating thing because it shows you, you know, how
dedicated to the craft. It's like, hey, because listen, you
know this time, I'm not saying guys don't go on vacation,
but you know, I remember, you know, in the too

(15:08):
early two thousands, in the two thousand, you know, the
the the the auks where you know, this time of
the year, man, guys are squeezing into every last bit
before camp. The camp was longer and more arduous. Yeah,
and guys are just like, yeah, man, the last thing
I want to think about is football. I'm going I'm

(15:31):
going to the Caribbean.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Well it was also I think it was also different
where you know, you didn't have to come into camp
like incomplete total shape, and now you better be in
shape when you show up to camp. Yeah, like there's
no working yourself in the camp shape anymore. Yeah, but
only veterans really did that, right, There's just no like

(15:55):
you can't do that. You better come in like completely healthy.
It's what I was talking to, uh Trey Smith. I
was like, so, how's your camp schedule this year? It's like, man,
we got we gotta go six days in a row
this year. It was like, I didn't know that was
allowed anymore. He's like, yeah, I guess it is. Six
days in a row without a day off. Was like
a wow, thoughts and prayers, Man, hope hope you hope

(16:16):
he manages six days in a row. It's just just
much different now obviously.

Than Yamber days.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Man, I had two days.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
I don't even know how I did it. People ask like,
how do you do it?

Speaker 1 (16:27):
I don't know.

There wasn't a choice. There was no other choice. You
weren't given a choice. So it wasn't like you there
was no off days. There was no we got off
day like the third Saturday of camp was an off day.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
This wasn't.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
It wasn't what the sport was. So I don't know
how I did.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
I just did it. There wasn't a choice. It was
like Trey being in Kansas City now, Andy, and he's
camps are hard. Yes, yeah, and he's always ran a
tough camp, but yes, you can't imagine his camps like
you got an afternoon practice off that was like a
big deal. If you had an afternoon practice off once

(17:03):
in a why he'd wait for like five like maybe
the fifth day and guys are starting fights to get
out of practice like you know. It was it was.
It was natty. I mean it was.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
It's like it's not its defensive coaches, like any ready
for being offensive coaches is an oddly very difficult camp,
which isn't is not common for offensive coaches. Most times,
offensive coaches have quote easier camps, and any definitely did
not have an easier camp. And so yeah, I mean, guys,
it's different now, but they care more about their bodies.

(17:37):
Like even at this event, like we had, like you know,
there's obviously sponsors and work. One of them was a
red light therapy company. We've had sponsorships there of a
stem cell companies and there's just so many ways now
to make sure your body is more prepared for a
football season. And you know there are guys and rookies
going to camp yesterday the whole Fame game. Guys are

going pretty soon to camp like it's it's about to start.

Man. Yeah, no, we're we're like, I'm excited. Man, We're
finally we made it through the rough spot and uh
we're we're here. We're won the precipice pretty soon, like
right today is uh as we get you know too,
you know heavy July, we're almost you know we're on

the back half of the month and pretty soon camp
and then you know, preseason and it won't be counting
down to the year. Baby. I mean it's it's closed
colleges around the corner. Coaches are getting the last bit
of vacation. My man, Maddie rules out of here. The
fact the end this week, that's back to Lincoln the

agency media day this week too for a couple of
days as well. So like you feel the football football
fever and they see conference got talked to Belichick yesterday.
Just is shit, I just I just I just straight
just spanned him with football questions, like my host, mattchi

Are a team that could actually win the title if
he went there, and he actually is a great fit
now that they got Jalen Brown and the re shaped roster,
they're a perfect fit little for Lebron, a gaping hole

of scoring without a legitimate and listen, Maxie's can play
the combo as com can play a little bit, but
Lebron would be the best facilitator on the floor. So
he's a great basketball fit. He loves Maxi, Embiid, even
Jalen Brown he's cool with. So there's a lot of

or was he just trying to throw you off the
set and throwing the Sixers out knowing that he's not
going to Philadelphia. I think this is a Sixer fan

goal is to win a championship, Philly is a great

a workstopage that appears, and this would be a really
really bad mistake for the players and owners to have

resurgence we've had for baseball since the Serenia right where
people are really engaged with baseball right now, and there's
an excitement for baseball that we have again we have

And there's many reasons for that part of it, as
you mentioned, like the rules have just they've done a
good job of making sure that you know, the game
is played faster now, right, the job of showcasing their

that because you decided to take you know, a labor
to into next season would just.

Be a really really big mistake. It really would be
a travesty.

Like it's look at whoever you felt about Netflix and

It's there for these leagues are just going bananas because
people want to watch sports. You know, we are in

We love it.

We get instead of the wine and bread, it's chicken,

You're gonna fall. Listen, Once upon a time, baseball was
the number one sport. I don't know, maybe it was
the eighties. I was a guy, had to be a
kid when it kind of took over. Football took over,
I guess in the eighties and that was it. And
then you know, I've seen the NBA sarpants it right.

So like you can fall, you can fall behind soccer,
you can fall beyond anything.

then you got owners that you know are on the
other side of it. You need you need a strong

Well, the commissioner's job is to let everyone know what
it's going to mean if they if they lose out
in this season. I just don't think that, at least
early on, it does not appear like they have any

talk about what's going to happen in this offseason, right,
I don't feel like they understand what's the stake care
because you know, the owners want to hard cap. The
players are definitely not going to agree to that. And

that's gonna be the big sticking point, right is they're
just not gonna owners can hold out longer. But you
can't lose the momentum. Just can't lose the momentum of
this year. Absolutely, just can't do it. There's no It
would be such a crippling mistake for them to not
capitalize on this, on the momentum they've had over the
last couple of years.

the NFL that I think is just better now is
that we acknowledge scheme fit now so much more than
we ever did in the past. I think that's something
we never talked about where you want to go on

about the player fitting into what the coach does, and

now it's a coach basically creating a plan.

Such a big difference in the NFL and philosophy and

it was about the coach's scheme, and you better fit

to win football games now totally just just do what

I didn't know anything about it compared to what through
his eyes. So McNabb he wanted to run a completely
different He ran a West Coast. He morphed that offense
around Donovan.

Yes, like Donovan wasn't a prototypical quarterback for his system
where he got the.

Ball out quick, ran it, boom boom boom, accurate right
on all his shows. That's his offense was.

But he morphed it.

He knew like Donovan could move and Donovan McNabb had
a great arm, had a big arm, could.

Go down the field.

So he morphed it like he saw the player and
you're to let the player fit or you know, mold
yours ski to your point, mold your scheme around the
player so it works. And that's what Andy was always doing.
It's why he's one of the best.

And it's I'm really I'm really fascinated to see the
offense this year in Kansas City because last year just
wasn't good enough and there's many reasons for that, and
this year they.

Vowed to get better.

And one thing that this Chiefs offense just didn't do
last season that the McVeigh and offenses.

Speaker 1 (01:34:30):
Do really well is find easy yards.

Like the one thing about those offenses is that they
just they're formationally sound and it leads to getting a
lot of great leverage for their people blocking unit. Okay,
and they have a lot of just slow like easy
pass conceptions to get easy yards right, the play actions.

The boots like those are those are easy yards, right.
The Chiefs offense just doesn't has not had that recently. Now.

Speaker 2 (01:34:58):
The difference is the Chiefs offense is more advanced on
third down than a Shanahan McVeagh offense. And a lot
of times those offenses can bog down a little bit
in those situations. But guys like Stafford, you know, they're
so good that they figure it out right, Like they
have some extra stuff in those offenses for them. But
you know, part of the reason that those offenses can
struggle times they don't allow a lot of adjustments from
the quarterback position.

They're sort of calling to run it.

Speaker 2 (01:35:20):
Andy Reid lets Mahomes do whatever he wants on third down,
right with protections and changing the play and whatnot. The
Chiefs offense has got to find a little more easy
and I'm curious how they do that this season. So
that's a big thing I'm looking for for Kansas City
this year. Is a great point. Some easy offense. They

(01:35:41):
didn't have it. It's not any read it had done
it for the West Coast offense. The slants, the shallow
crosses like they they forever, they did those things it
just was much harder last year for some reason.

I don't know what that reason is. Maybe it's personnel driven,
maybe it's.

Driven by the screen game didn't work well. So there's okay.
So I have a couple of theories on the screen game.
I've shared these before. I don't know if I show
them on here before. A couple things.

So Andy Reid, I've had many coaches, Andy Reid is
the best I've ever seen a diagramming and teaching screens.

There's just no one better.

Speaker 2 (01:36:15):
The level of detail and just the practicality of his
screen game and the way he teaches it. It makes
a ton of sense, and he is a head coach,
will teach it to us like he stopped practice to
teach us the screens. A couple of rule changes I
think I've really hurt the screen game for Andy Reid.
One is you cannot throw your body. You cannot cut
in space anymore. And that was a big, a big

(01:36:35):
coaching point for his screen game was that you, as
an offensive lineman, had to throw so you'd cut. You
throw your body in space and what that does for
the most part, if you miss, that's fine. The defender
has to move out of the way. If I'm six seven,
if I'm diving at your legs, your movie out of

(01:36:57):
the way. And so that what that Doese did obviously
is it gave the running back a lot of room
to run when you can cut, can't cut anymore, can't
cut anymore. So that's a great explanation. So you can't
it's very hard now to run a screen. There's also
much less practice time now, so how much time do

you have to work on screens and detail things like that.

Speaker 1 (01:37:24):
So also they have just not had a regular running back.

Speaker 2 (01:37:32):
Who's a good screen guy in a while, Like when
Jamal Charles was there, we ran a lot of screens.
He was the primary back first down, second down, third down.
Like now they have specific guys they run screens for.
It's it's kind of obvious, like, oh, Jerey mckenn's in
the game now they might run a screen, and now
with Kenneth Walker, I imagine it's easier to do.

Yes, you also sort of like have to have a
run game because teams have to think you can you
can play action pass and then screen. There's just a
lot of reasons why it just hasn't worked as well.
I imagine this year they get back to it. It's
the best stream game in the NFL when it's rolling. Man,
I've been part of it. Jamal Charles had a game

and Twining thirteen with like two hundre yards receiving, like
he multiple screens. We scored on that game like it's
it's it's really good when it's when it's rolling.

to you because that was a hallmark, that was always
a staple in his offense. You know. You know.

It's got to have a bounce back. He was not

following it is due. Dak was way better than Lamar
last year. Yeah, Lamar, I don't know what was going on.
He didn't look as quick but probably bagged off the
whole nine. But even he wasn't as accurate as he

easily is.

Yeah, I know they've a lot of coaching changes there.
He didn't look he didn't look at as comfortable last season.
The offensive line has gone through some adjustments over the years,
which again. I mean, if you're a great player, you
probably have to overcome some of that. But yeah, it's
a big year. Look, they got new coaching staff, They've
worked on improving the offensive line. It's a big year

(01:39:27):
for him. Do I think he's the sixty ninth best
players NFL players voted him. No, But you know that's
a weird way they do the rankings and how they
come up with those things that have been part of that. Like,
it's not really sick people. They are way too seriously,
the players do not take it seriously at all when
they vote on this. You shouldn't take it seriously. It's
good talking for us at this time of the year,
right to talk about it, but don't take it seriously.

But it's just telling you that players felt like Lamar
last year just really had a down year, and obviously
this year I think is important. Look, with the Chiefs
not being as good, we think not being as good
at some point Lamar and Josh Allen got to take
advantage of this, or yeah, by by someone young at AFC.
I mean, you know, it's like time soon for them

to really take it into year if they want to
win a championship. That's not Jason Gary yesterday say, I
think Josh Allen can in multiple how about just get
to one man.
