We're uh kicking off the NFL preseason. We have college
football just a week away, got week zero coming up shortly,
We got you know, baseball starting to get it real interesting,
and then uh oops coming to the NBA comes out
with its schedule.

So it's all here and uh, fella's got your covered.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Jeff Sports Anthony Gargano and uh we saw it, Jeff,
we saw week one of the preseason on their way.
Have you been like just ensconced in NFL preseason?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Good morning, sir. I've been Uh, I've been judgy, if
that's the way to put it. I've been judging these teams.
You know, I think you're not supposed to write it's
the preseason, but I mean, I don't know how you
you don't judge some of these teams right with the
way they play some times. But I've been watching it
all man, I got the film pulled up this morning.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Rookies.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
I watched them some Lions Blake Miller yesterday. I looked
at the young guys you know they're playing. But it
is interesting, right, because if you have preconceived notions about teams,
the preseason can really help solidify those, even though you
probably shouldn't care very much. And for me, you know,
it's about like process, right, and depth on some of
these games. And if you you watch them with sort

(01:51):
of an idea of what to look for, I think
I think they can be helpful. Right, Like, for example,
I think the Jets are very poorly coached, all right,
and then we saw that last season and guess what,
they looked very poorly coached again last night. You know,
like you're like, you know, like they make bad mistakes.
It's not these are not players that are going to

(02:13):
play for them. I get it, but it trickles down
the rest of your team. About that night for Bailey Zappy, right,
and then you look at like the Falcons, You're like,
I don't know, you know, the Falcons have their best
pass rusher out for the season, got hurt, their second
best pass rusher suspended eight games. They have their quarterback
battle is probably you know, if you talk about quarterback

(02:34):
rooms in the NFL, it's probably worse. It's probably second
worst behind the Browns right in the NFL. And guess
what to will look terrible and the Falcons look terrible.
You're like, okay, I kind of chuched the box there,
so you know there are then there are some takeaways
from preseason you can have and uh, it's mostly about
to me, the bad team by the good teams are

(02:55):
gonna you know, the Broncos well, right, because.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
You're not gonna see a lot of a lot of
it on the good team. I've seen a lot of plays. Yeah,
but we're gonna, oh go ahead, sorry, no, no, no, We're
gonna go through it all. I want to go through
each each team with you and all those takeaways and
we'll kind of go, well, we'll dive deep because you
know we Thursday night, the whole thing. We got a
bunch of games today that we'll look at to But

to your point and.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Had me thinking about because I'm i.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Kevin Stevansi's a buddy of mine and I think he's
a really bright guy.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Root for the guy.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I mean, he went from quarterback hell to like the
eighth Ring of Hell to the sixth Ring of Hell.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
In Quarterback out, Yeah, I saw a couple of clips
or two and maybe i'll I'll be able to pull
him up and just look a little bit.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
You know, I think you know my social media account,
when I post film, I try to keep it mostly
positive because I know there's plenty of people that'll post
some negative film.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
But it just works out better that way, I think.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
But the two of stuff yesterday was bad. It was
a third and fifteen. He threw the ball three yards. Yeah,
there's a second and fifteenth through the ball three yards?

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
I mean, what are we doing here? Like this is
stuff that we're going to work on, tall Man, And.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
It's like all the things about too that you think
are not good, they all showed up in the first
two drives of that game history. And you know again,
I I think the Falcons, with their past much situation,
are kind of a bad place right now in the
quarterback situation. And what's funny is like, if you were
to tend me off, it's a line skill guys, a
plus man, right, like one of the best in the NFL,

(04:32):
and that combination problems quarterback stinks and that's obviously what
the National Football League is about. So it was it
was a rough. It was rough last night for the lineup.
And then on the flip side, you know, Denver played.
I think there are starters outside of bon Nicks, right,
the starters play at least in the first couple.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Of drives, they look great. Like the team depth looks good.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Obviously when you're when you're good, you typically have really
good depth because you know, you gotta practiceast each other
and whatnot. And like they look great yesterday, Yeah, yeah
they did.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
They looked really good without knowing Nick, So start start
the rumors is I'm not doing that, But it's kind
if you wanted to, that will be interesting.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Uh, you know, it's so funny bring getting back to
uh the two with panics thing.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
You know what, You're gonna laugh at me.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
But it's I'd almost wrecked because he came from Cleveland,
the fans getting back to the Falcons.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
I'd almost rather have Joe Flacco. Yeah, here's the one thing.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Joe still can throw it. I mean the other night
he played, he played well.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
I think that you just you're gonna be bad this
year and drop the quarterback. I mean it feels like
you know what's coming, right, So, which sucks as he
just wasn't a bad team and it's not a bad team.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Yeah, that's what.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Again, the roster around the quarterback is good and so
they can just manage to get some good quarterback played
the next couple of years. They're good when they're gonna
win football games. And so that is is really where
the Falcons, right it was it was a rough again. Again,
I mean it's it's not the end result is as

(06:20):
not as important as sort of what it looks like, right,
And what it looked like for the Falcons last night
was that all the things we thought could be an
issue for the team all popped.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Up in the first preseason game.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah, and again the starters played right, Like like, these
teams are playing their starters more and more now because
there's less games and we're seeing it's really tough a
lot of teams that don't play their starters in a
Week one and week two and those games matter, man, Right,
how many times you come down in the season you're like,
well that Week one game that really cost them, you know.
And there's new new offenses and new schemes so we

(06:51):
are seeing the starters play more and more. Now the
starting quarterback might not play right like again, you know,
because the injury whatnot, but you know they're they're they're
gonna play starters more and more. We've seen that more
and more.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
I like it. I think it's good to do. I'm
curious if your your Eagles are gonna do that today
at all.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Now they will not see I just now I could
see him the second preseason game, which is weird. At
some point you'll see the first team. So next week,
think I joint practices, so you know a lot of
times the joint practice thing, you usually don't play. But

(07:34):
I mean they have to start getting game experience. So
my guess is in me next week. I don't think
he would do it in the third week, you know,
but they're like, it's a dramatic new offense. So you've
got you gotta you've gotta get game environment.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
I think the starter should should play uh enough snaps
to feel com I mean this feel I feel that
way for years, not just an Eagles thing. I think
the start play a little bit to feel not geat
if late Johnson doesn't play, Sure, but you typically play
your starting offense of line with your starting quarterback. But
I'm I mean like it's also just an operational thing, right,

(08:16):
it's the first time. You know, I imagine the play
calls are are pretty worthy, right, you're between to get
in there, have the operation. Uh what know what it
feels like in a game. I just think joint practices
are way I kind of they can be pretty useless

(08:37):
for as much as the media hypes them up. But
I don't they're fine hype.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Uh, I don't know. I mean because I know coaches
like them. Yeah, some coaches do, some some don't. I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
I I've done it. I've done only once. I can't wait.
You know, I'm not I veteran with it.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
But I thought it was kind of dumb, like did you.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Yeah, I was was I'm curious. That's interesting. Well, so
I'll tell you what the guation.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
So it was, it was the lines with Jim called well,
and we went up to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers,
and you know they're you know, and both coaches you know,
no fighting all that stuff, and you know, we listened
to them because we respected both those coaches. It's kind
of was just like a a kind of a weirdly
softish environment. I was like surprised that I think both
teams were just like so in tune with like the
coach not pissing off the coach that you know, guys

(09:33):
sort of didn't go as hard.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
I don't know, I was just a surprised, Oh oh, okay.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
My brother has a story like he was on the
Browns and they went to Buffalo and it was Buffalo
and they were and he was like so concerned that
it was gonna be the blood bath and it was
gonna be tough, and it was like the easiest two
days of his life.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Like yeah, like like the the.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Starters like didn't play or something on Buffalo because they
were kicking their butt or vice versus something like that.
Like it just was like he said, yeah, I thought
we thought, you know, there was the Buffalo with he
with Kyle Williams and Jerry Hughes and we just were
like we was I think, I think the real defensive coach,
and we were worried We're going to be just a
blood bath of a of a week, and it just
was super easy. And then with the fighting, right, the

(10:15):
fighting to me is so is so juvenile man one fight, sure,
but you know three four, five, six, what do we
do it? Just practice man practicing, so and it's why
he doesn't do him. That's why Dan Campbell didn't do
him this season.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
And you know, to me, the fighting, I gotta ask
Candy about that because he when he was in Philly
he did it.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
So here's my here's my guess on why he doesn't
do it. I don't know if it's so much about
the fighting. I just think he has a routine about
how he wants to practice, and I would imagine he
thinks that joint practices ruined that that routine, and he
has a preparation method that he uses. He knows exactly
what he wants to get every day in practice this. Yeah,

(11:01):
and typically when you have a joint practice, so one
one simply two days, right, the first day or second
day whatever. One day is the practice schedule of one team, right,
and the next day the practice schedule of the second team.
So one of the two practices, any of you basically
have to give up control practice of someone else. That's

(11:21):
that's not happening with no, no, like, I think it's
more about that than the fighting. I mean the fighting
headline sounds.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
I would agree with that.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
I think it's more just like any has a routine,
he doesn't want to mess with it. Also, too, there's
nowhere to put a team in Missouri State.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Yeah yeah, so like he'd have to do much rather
go away.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
He loves going away. I think there's value it.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
As much as I didn't like it as a player,
sleeping the dorms and whatnot, I think there's a value
just bonding with your teammates, which is basically what it
is with a big bonding session. And I state it's
a I mean, we were in some miserable places for
spar marks, South Carolina, which just find it on its own.
But to the door, we're just terrible beds and whatnot.

(12:10):
And then you have you know, I was in Minnesota
State and Missouri Western. Like it's not great, but it's
a good bonding. It's a good bondy and that's what
camps for.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah yeah yeah, now and just getting away.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
And I always thought it was good for you. I did,
you know, I always do I.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
I you know, people, Oh, your family your family's fine,
family is fine, you'll be your okay, your family will
survive without you for three weeks.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Right, and and that's the thing we're only talking about,
like you're always back before the games, like.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Well, now now you are. It was not always that case.
I mean we didn't break camp till the third game
when we were.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Yeah the Panther, Yeah, and Andy's camp and now but
I'm talking about now.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
I'm like, but you know, now you're back before the three.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Season, man, I have uh yeah that you get an
off night in Spartanburg, South Carolina, not even off to
eat Wednesday off and all the wives and girlfriends will
show up into town for the one the one little
They weren't a lot of the dorms though.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
There was a local hotel that was pretty booked.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
The visits. Yeah, like it was the joint dude college.
Yeah yeah, you had to yeah yeah. So that was
always the fun night. It was like what it was
like the second Wednesday of camp. You just uh, all
the wives and girlfriends were coming to town and the
local Marriott just had full capacity.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
It was weird.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
But I mean, you know, dude, I could do an
entire podcast, entire show on the sort of like family
wife culture of sports wives. I don't get me started down.
I'm gonna get canceled for my thoughts on that. But
you know, it just it's good to get away. It's
good to be bond with your team. I a get

(14:10):
in some of my funest memories. I mean, training camp
was was rough, but the locker room, man like, the jokes,
the laughs, the fun times we had. There's a lot
of joy that they came from going away for training camp,
as hard as it was. And we're not that far
away out me, No, seventy five minutes from home. It's
not like they're not far. But man, it was such

(14:33):
a great bonding experience for all of us. And and
you build those friendships and those bonds and those laughs
and those jokes and sometimes of the you know, the
rookie singing and the talent shows, the late night film sessions,
and you know, it was a good good time to
learn about your teammates.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
You know. Yeah, well that's how you know.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Like to me, that's why I always believed in it,
because there's there's a trust factor that comes from it,
Like it's a byp ouduct of it. When you guys
are together and everybody's working the distraction of home, you know,
And I get like now because the facilities are are
you know great, all the medical stuff there, so you

(15:15):
have all the resources right at the facility. And these
places are like little fortresses, like like if there's ever
you know, God forbid, you know, world War three, go
to an NFL complex and hide out because you'll be fine.
You'll have all the medical and food that you need
for years to hide out. And you know, it's it's

(15:38):
got that all all that stuff. It's just amazing. But
you know, going away for a couple of weeks, I'm
not saying you're gonna go away like back in the
day in six weeks and be at Lehigh.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
And then when you know when when we the Eagles used.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
To be at Lehigh University which is about an hour
and change about an hour and twenty minutes, and it
was the Lehigh five hundred went on the last day
camp and everybody, but it was.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Like five weeks and everybody couldn't wait to get out. Buddy.
The state troopers were waiting for us. They knew we
were driving up seventy seven. Man, they were ready, they're ready.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
To pull us all over. Yeah, that was messed up though.
They were like sitting like on the highway. They knew
what they got out of camp. Someone got pulled over
every every single time.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Always because you always had one dope that we didn't
that had to go one hundred and twelve.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Yeah, and there and then souped up charger. It's loud
as can be, like just you know, bright red. It's like, well, yeah,
of course they're gonna pull you over. Yeah, but there
is again, there is that bonding. And you know, I
was in Panthers camp last weekend. They're two weeks ago.
I look, the Panthers are great of glaship with them, Like,
I like what they're doing. It's such a different vibe

(17:00):
being a training camp practice at home, you know. And
it has nothing to do with the these are now
the rules. Like I was talking at JJ Jansen, who's
been the NFL since two thousand and nine. They're a
long snapper. He's the most games, most games is a Panther.
It's so funny he's he's thirty nine. I'm forty, like
the same, you know, you want to learn that skill.

(17:21):
We got kids the same age. I long snapped in
high school and college. By the way, I was the
backup in college. I'm just too fat. I could I
couldn't do a film cover anybody. But nonetheless, like talking
to JJ's funny, He's like, we got eleven hours a
day in the building. That's it in training camp. So
like I was like, wait, you know you're you're out
of six thirty, goes yeah, six thirty. We get get
in seven thirty, out at six thirty, and you go

(17:45):
home and goes yeah, just like we're just like regular life.
I mean, it is what it is now, right, and
so the players are bargaining for this the good for them,
but it's it is different now.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
I think that.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
I mean what, I'll be honest with you. I mean,
if I were a player, i'd want to be there.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
I don't think. I don't think guys know the difference anymore, right,
like because they've done it, don't.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
I guess I'm going from back in the day, right,
because like you want to be and to be what
your teammates is fun.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I I don't want to advocate
for two days.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Obviously, if you go away for camp and you get
to stay at a hotel, it's probably a little nicer than
a dorm room. So I like that a dorm room. Again,
Please don't cry from everyone. I know you're probably like,
oh my god, Jeff Schwartz, I'm so sorry you You
made a lot of money and get to stay in
the dorm room for three weeks. I get it, Okay, guys,
I understand. But it's a big fella. You know, not

(18:52):
having a bed to fit for for a decent amount
of time and the three weeks is not great. You know,
it's not great to put too wins together and have
a mattress pad.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
In the middle.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
You know, like, uh, you know it is the best environment.
But you make it work, obviously, Yeah you do. I
just think you have that, all right. Let's let's let yeah,
you have those.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
You just have that. Your mind's clear, your your focus.
It's everything in life. It's so much about focus and
and and getting rid of distractions. I'm telling you, like
the older I get the one thing that to me,
it's all about distractions and how you limit distractions. Correct

(19:39):
a big believer. All right, we're gonna come back. We're
gonna go through each team that has played in the
preseason and give your thoughts because it's breakdown time. Lots
to get to the NBA schedule has come out, all right,
baseball's winded out. We got uh, We're gonna look at

observations what we've seen so far through the preseason, and uh,

I kind of like how these coaches are approaching it,
because like they're playing a lot of absolutely yes, all right.

It's great to see.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
All right, let's start Thursday night Lions and Bengals. We
sold Joe Burrow get sacked. Yes, it's like, oh my god.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
No. Yeah, I was less enthused about the old past
protection there for the Bengals, but you know, I thought
that that otherwise they looked pretty good.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
I went and I went back and watched them. Yeah,
then it was a play. The right guard just sort
of didn't track his guy and lost track of him
and eventually made it is what it is. But I
thought I wanted to look at defensively right. It was
like that was the big deal they brought about to do. Guys,
dexter watch was not playing one hundred percent, which makes sense,

(23:13):
so I was like, I'm gonn watch it sexy sexy text.
Uh yeah, he got like pushed on a double team.
You're like, yeah, it's not going hundred percent, which is
fine for the played a couple of steps. I mean
I was literally looking at the defense, right. I mean,
that's a big part of what the Bengals are going
to be this year. I thought the defense looked fine,
but the Lions again didn't play on their starters, so
it's really hard to tell in that situation. But I

(23:35):
did think that it was a positive how that defense looked,
and I'm excited to see that defense when you know
they're on the field for a rend teasing game.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Yeah, I felt the same thing. I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (23:50):
Lions backup situation, alt Meyer and.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
Dobbs because Bridgewater retired. Yeah, Almar looked since it was
I was uh, he looked. He looked like he belonged.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
I will say, though, I mean, we just we just
can't get worked up about rookie quarterbacks in the preseason
like we have to.

Speaker 1 (24:12):
We have to just well, we are going to get worked.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Up with it, I know, I know, but we're gonna
be measured about it's because it's not the regular season.
We've seen a lot of rookies play well early on
and then they stick afterwards. So let's let's hold our
breath a little bit on some of these.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Well, let's go right to it, all right, let's go
right to the black and gold.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Yes, I mean you're getting here.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
Yes, because now the reason why bring this up, and
I'm not gonna go overboard. However, I have loved this
guy for many since the kid came out of high school.
Because I keep looking at the kid and I go,
he's got great size, strength and a big RM.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
And for some reason, James Redlam.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
For some reason, Drew Aller just never put it together
at Penn State, never put it together. Now there was
James Chacklin and all his legion of horrible offensive coordinators,
and I don't think the development took place. But it

(25:21):
was good to see Drew Aller for one game with
Mike McCarthy. And it was just good to say it
because I know that kid could play.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
Right.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
So here's a here's a I'll give you a sort
of a general view of how I kind of view
the preseason, okay, is that I view it through a
lens of my expectations for the player, Okay, obviously of course,
or the situation or the team that's playing, and then
obviously obviously who they're playing against, right, and do they
meet those expectations. So you know, if if a one

(25:54):
offense is playing it gets a two defense, they should
look good. They should If they do look good, I
just check the box. Okay, good job, right, you're you're
you look good, because we'll get to an offense that
played the two to get the two defense does.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
Not look good and it's like, oh boy, here we go.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
Not great, okay, So that just that's how I've that
base level just sort of like do you do you
check the box?

Speaker 1 (26:15):
Okay, So.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
Drew Aller when he's playing in the fourth quarter or
second half of a preseason game, would you agree he's
probably the most talented player on the field. Yes, So
he sort of should play well, right, Like, he should
play well if he's gonna be any sort of NFL player,
he should play well.

If he doesn't, then your eye is not really cut
out for this, right.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
So I'm I'm not it's a good star for dree Aler,
but if you think he's good, that is a game
he should play well in, correct?

You agree with me there? Yeah, yeah, your rationale is right. Yes, However,
you know, I mean there's a lot of people that
think he was any good.

Yes, I'm I'm I'm skeptical because I think that he
left a lot uh to desire in college, and I
just in the NFL is odd were like college is
doesn't really matter what you do in college. I think
sometimes when you and they think about how many guys
are good in that position that weren't really like that
good in college. They were just fine in college, you know.

But I do think like he should have had more
success at Penn State, whether you like to coach or not.
And so that's my only concern. And he's a he's
not even a chance to play this season most likely.
So whatever he does now is fun for us to
talk about, but it really has no bearing on whether
he's going to play all this year.

Listen, I agree with you, but my only point is
you have eyes. You see the kid. Yeah, he's always
had talent. That's never been a problem. I mean, like,
so if you got it. Here's the thing, and this
is where I kind of pushed back a little bit
with you, is that you got a kid coming out

of high school who with that kind of arm and
that kind of ability, this raw raw ability, raw skills.

wasn't that? Did that McCarthy? Kid McCarthy? Maybe when I
might mix. I know Aller didn't want to maim McCarthy.

Did he threw the ball once in the second half
against someone because they were in the ball thirty four times.
It might have even been against Penn States. But but yes,
you have to be developed, absolutely agree.

Is unlikely to get a chance to be good in
the NFL because he's not gonna get an opportunity to play.
Aaron Rodgers is gonna play right this year, as we know,

If it is, then he might have a chance. But
he's a third string guy. When is he ever gonna play?

Because next year the Seilers are gonna draft a quarterback.
You would imagine he just he might never get a
chance in this league. I mean, right, I mean, like

I think they played it right. The rest of the
games are today, is now eighty tomorrow, and we're gonna
we're gonna get the same tweets from the same eight people.
Oh my god, he's the best quarterback. Someone's gotta trade
for him, gotta do it. He's the He's the next
great quarterback in the NFL. It's like, okay, then someone,
someone do it.

No one ever does it, Like I'm tired hearing about
these guys in the preseason. The analytics guys fall in
love with It's like, okay, then some teams to trade

in a row, Conse Mitchell is incredible, But Conse Mitchell
gets no assistant, no rebounds like Clark gets the twenty
nine points and ten and she should have had seventeen
assist lat they missed on the lamps last night. And

she controls the entire game. And she also does this
well gay defended like no one else in the league.
Most teams pick her up at half court. They'll send
doubles her way, especially if it's going well. They'll just
double her right immediately after past half court, which is insane.
And and she controls the entire tempo of the team

and the game and whatnot. So I don't know, man,
I mean, no, not my problem. I guess I just
I just like watching the fever. Pa'm watching Links play tonight.
The Lynks are fun to watch it play Aces tonight

one o'clock games in the middle of August. It's so
entirely silly. I don't get why the NFL MAT's for TV, obviously,
but why they're doing this. The second thing that I

The Browns and Bears are NFL network too, So you
got so.

When it's his NFL network, all right, it's not a
national broadcast. Very rarely, is it?

Very rare? Are they sending their national broadcast crew. What
they're doing is they're pulling the home feed for the team.
So if it's you know, Cowboys Seahawks, Like, if it's
a Cowboys home game, the Cowboys home broadcast will be
an NFL network. And then people get really really upset

that they're listening to this game and the visiting team
is not being covered. It's because it's the home broadcast.
Every team has their own local broadcast for the preseason
and that's what they're pulling. Now.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
There are sometimes they'll have the national crew show up,
but that's kind of rare in the preseason. I'm not
sure it's happening this week. I think they're just taking
the home feed for the team, put an NFL network,
and people, buddy, they get so angry.

Oh yeah, I mean, you know, you gotta understand that
you're not sending a whole you're not doing the whole
production team for a preseason game.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
You're you're using the local squads. So yes, and I
think I think though that every network said they do
one national telecast to get the guys you know, kind
of gonna groove right right, you need everybody.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
It's like their preseason too, where you got to get
we sold the Hall of Fame game.

They'll Fox will do one, but you're not doing it
every week.

Espan will do one like and they'll do one like that,
because again, you're not sending crews to watch. You know,
the Rams gonna play Nobody in the Chiefs don't have
Patrick Mahomes. You're not sending a crew to to do
that game, right like that. That'd be silly. So that's
that's a fun part about the preseason. So you do
your opportunity to listen to some home broadcasts, which you
will give you some really good information. You'll do radio
with with Bob Pappa, who's the Giants of Voice the Giants.

He was telling the other day, like he when he
knows they'll be a national TV game, which I think
the Giants are today or next week, is like he will,
he'll actually do more research on the other team so
he can give more of a of a national of
a picture for both teams, so that the fans feel
like they're hearing, you know, the away team perspective, which
I think is pretty nice.

they got to remake roster like they're gonna be really good,
and they got like a zillion nationally televised game. So like,
you know, there's a lot of hype for the season.
And I go, yeah, like, you know, Christmas Day, Lebron
wanted to be in LA said they're playing the Lakers. Well,
Christmas Day, it's great, that's gonna be fun. But don't

get it twisted, like people are still gonna watch in
this In my town, they're still gonna watch more football.

I mean, listen, it's football.

I don't know what to say to everybody, like it's
it's not in the NFL's job to feel bad sorry
for the NBA because they were first to Christmas Day.
I covered back in the day, like the end of

was a young reporter, and because I didn't have a family,

I mean had my own my uh my parents and
and and siblings and everybody, but I didn't have my
own family, so I always I always covered those games.

Yeah, you know, there was obviously, you know, uh a
push for the NFL to own a lot of days
right in the calendar, and they've done that because their
product is such that you feel, but every game matters, right,

life or death every game, and so Christmas Day games,
well sometimes the quarterbacks are hurting and feel like it
you know, as as impactful maybe as other times, but
like it matters, right, So we every game is like
the the most important game ever, right, And so the
NBA just doesn't have that sense of urgency on their
on their calendar, and so I think that there's not
a feel that you have to watch the NBA, you know,

if you're not a die hard fan really until March, right,
But that's what feels like sometimes. However, it does with
the schedule release, it did feel like most would not
there's more excitement, and maybe that's a way to put it,
but there are.

Some really good teams in the NBA this year.

That are gonna be worth watching, right, and I think
that their stars are gonna play. And the NBA does
feel better than it's been in a long time, healthier
than it's been a long time for a regulation that matters.

You think about the Knicks obviously, right, but the Sixers
down with Lebron. You think about you know what Boston's
gonna be this season? Okay, how about the Thunder the.

Just that rivalry is freaking awesome. I mean it really is.

So it does feel like there's going to be an
excitement for the regular season we have not seen in

yesterday finally, so we take a Christmas trip every year.

Kids do yesterday and you know you're coming, You're coming
this year to Whistler, like I am not, And and
last night she finally was like you're not coming, are you?

my better days of the year to work. I can't
like the whole Christmas. I get tons of work, tons

I stayed home. They went to Whistler. I went to them,

I can't turn down work, so I she finally relented

including my daughter. One went to play travel ball. I

to get going on travel ball?

Well, why are you going to go and embrace it

Well, I mean, you know, she's start your your angels

we just started back up with football and I missed it,
like I missed it. Now I'm fired up because we

You know, everyone everyone's good and you know, until the
pads come on, the pads come on, changes lives.

you see the kids and you see the difference between
the flag kids and the tackle kids.

and I help out and like, you know, keeping your
head up and tackling the right way, like teaching them
now so they understand it and you know, and they

we come home like first day and you know how

let's go, like doing our Oklahomas.

And so he was violent.

He was in it like he was. He was constantly
in it. And because he was doing well, right, so
he was beating everybody. So he was all fired up.
So we come home and he's exhausted and he's all
beat up. And we're sitting at the table and it's
like nine point thirty. He's got his shirt off and
he's got a bruise from his shoulder like down toward

his elbow and you know whatever, and it's fine, he
doesn't it doesn't hurt him when he's keeps looking at it.
He goes and he's and he's flexing right like he's
in eighth grade.

And we go to the gym.

He's getting used to his body now he's he's pretty ripped.
So like he's my wife's like his mother's like, oh
my god, look at your arm. This is very ridiculous.

I go, he's fine, he's all right, and he's like,
I mean, look at it. It's cool, you know.

And he kept looking at it like it was your
trophy and I and I just looked at him and
I smiled and I was like, wow, genetics is interesting
because that was exactly me when I was his age.

It's pretty cool. Yeah, I don't think my wife would would.
And it's suck.

The one thing like an olexer I played football, he
came up with the bruise. I think she would tell
him to quit enough.

But yeah, but you know it was on his upper arm,
like it's showing baby, baby's hurt. I know, but you know,
I mean my wife was the same way.

It's not it's not you know, it's not quick time,
but like because we've been doing this for a long
time with both boys.

But she hates it.

I mean, truthfully, she hates She's like, why can't he
just cantentrate on baseball? I go, well, he is contrary
of baseball, but he's going to play football and baseball.

He's good in both sports. Yes, And.

Here's the thing about football and I and I tell
parents over it. First of all, obviously you know it's
cognizant of head injuries, like we understand what football does
is because you know better than anybody because you're in
the NFL.

Practice is not fun, like there's nothing fun.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
Basketball practice is fun like basketball by by you're playing
a lot of games. Even baseball you're smoking to bat.
There's there's a degree of fun. Football is work. Now,
there is a sense of accomplishment that comes after each
practice when you make it through practice and you study

(51:56):
your your plays and you know everything what's going on,
and you come home and there's that there's this something
that it gives you. It gives you resiliency, all the
stuff that prepares.

Speaker 1 (52:12):
You for life is what it does.

Speaker 2 (52:15):
Correct And I'm a big proponent of it, a huge
proponent of it. And I see it. I see what
my older one I see. He is locked in, he
does his he's got his homework. When he does his work,
he's up early, he does his like there is. It
puts you in a routine.

It's good for you. Well, that's yes.

Also you know it's a commitment, right, So it's just
commitment and toughness and resiliency and you learn about friendship
and team bonding. I mean, yeah, it's it's awesome.

the end zone, right we felt like the end zone
in the back of the field, and it looked right
through the wide receiver well eventually where the ball was
caught to Jalen Hurts. And all the things that you
think about Jalen Hurts, especially if you think they're bad,

all happen on this throat right, laid over the middle,
sort of off his back foot. Not a great throw
in a double coverage. Like all the things you're like,
this is the stuff he's not good at was all
on display in this one clip, and that's why you
got the reaction. And I even put out there, I'm like,
this is just an odd clip for social media. People like, well,

celebrate the defense. I'm like, you can do that. Of course,
you have one view of practice. That's it, one of
you the interception, and it didn't even, by the way,
show it really the defender to the last what quarter
second left of the video, and it was a it
was highly a bad throw from your quarterback. Which again,
interceptions and camp happen all the time. There's nothing wrong

with promoting a defensive play, nothing wrong with promoting the
defense having a good day at practice. It happens all
the time. Interceptions to me are not a big deal
in training camp. I think that we make way too
much of a deal about them because oh my god,
they're the worst. No, no, no, you work on different

things in practice, right, So if if today is a
third down day, which we have third down days most days,
but heavy third down day, push the ball down the field,
make a play, Try doing this, Try doing that.

You're gonna throw interceptions.

I actually think it's worse if I read your quarterback
has no interceptions for four days in a row. Are
they trying to push the ball down the field. They're
trying to be aggressive. So again, it's not through the
pick per se. It's just that everything that people think
is quo bad about Jalen Hurts all happened on that
one clip, and I felt like, to me, the social

media team could have done a better job of protecting

the ridiculousness. For some reason, Hurts has become one of

people to go why don't you get Jaialen Hurts? And

Hurts as the thirty eighth best quarterback even though he's

I think Hurts is a quarterback you win with not

because of and that's why people get worked up about it.
But to be fair, there's only like six quarterbacks win

It's like no, no, Allen Mahomes, you know, it's not
a lomar of it. Are in a long list of

didn't say anything to him, then that's a problem with
