but they won one of them. Yeah, but this is
just my entire point, My entire thesis with this Yankee

K Show said he heard from multiple people that the
Yankees asked Anthony Volpi to play some second base in
the miners, and Volpi said, no, I'm a shortstop. And
then Michael k comes out today and he said, I
checked in further with those rumors. There's no reports to it.
I think Michael kay got his marching orders from the
Yankees to kind of retrack that statement, because Anthony Volpi,
you're in no position to be making demands of where

you kind of have to hear what Michael Kay has

is happening with Brad Stevens, by the way, who I
ripped in the first hour, by the way, and I
said he should be ashamed of himself for trading Jay
le Brad and making the Sixers so attractive that Lebron
James is now going to go there.

I believe I'm not reporting that. It's a guess.

I think Lebron James is going to end up being
a Philadelphia seventy six or I do. I think it's
the best story for him. But what is what is
Brad Stevens doing here?

So Brad Stevens came out yesterday when the trade becomes official,
pull Paul George to the Celtics, Jalen Brown to Philadelphia,
Brad Stevens comes out to defend the trade. And when
he comes out to talk.

Which means he's defending himself.

Yes, right, he basically admitted it's hard to win when
seventy percent of your cap is tied to two players.
When the Celtics won the title with Jalen Brown and
Jason Tatum, they occupied forty seven percent of the cap, right,
so the cap just continues to go up and up
because of how good the Celtics, how good those two

players have been on the Celtics. And Paul George gives
the Celtics more long term flexibility because his deal is
one year shorter than Jalen Brown's to get off the book.

Yeah, but now seventy percent of their payroll is wrapped
up in Paul Georgia Jason Tatum as opposed to j
Brown and Jason Tatum who won yet title again.

Short term, you didn't fix much, if you're Brad Stevens.
Long term you did because Brad Stevens was pressed further.
He was like, so would you say that the Jalen
Brown trade is primarily a move to restructure the books
And Brad Stevens was like, no, that's not what it is.
It's a move to keep us at a very competitive
level now and give us optionality moving forward. And that's
what it feels like. This deal is for the Celtics,

where you're not tying your cap to seventy percent with
just two players. The interesting part about what Brad Stevens
had to say STU, Yeah, he suggested that team should
get discounts against the cap the longer a player is there.

Actually, Brad Stevens, you should be ashamed of yourself, but
you should also be commended for coming up with that idea.
Ashamed of yourself because you traded. I don't mind the trade.
I actually understand what it is. He is saying, the optionality,
the shorter term on Paul George.

I don't mind him trading Jalen Brown and keeping Jason
Tatum because he thinks Tatum's the one on that team.

Again for the one hundredth time, how you trade Jalen
Brown to a team that you play fifteen times a year,
that's inside your division, inside your conference, that who just
beat you in the NBA playoffs without Jalen Brown. That's
my only issue with it. I do like what he's
saying here, though, I like it a.

Lot because it does feel to a certain extent that
the Boston Celtics are being penalized that they had back
to back great drafts with Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown.
Those that duo won the city a title, and now
you're getting to the point where you're having to decide
between one or the other. And obviously the Celtics are
going to pick the guy who analytically they're saying is

the better player, even though he is coming off a
pretty bad Achilles injury. So that got me thinking, like
all the player movement, it's good for parody. You see
it with eight different NBA champions the past eight years.
It's great for us on sports radio because it gives
us a ton of content, a ton of hours to
talk about all these moves. Yeah, but is it good

for the fan experience in the NBA?

All the movement, Well, the fans love the transaction more
than the action. They do, so they love like you know,
it fills a void in sports radio on the sports calendar.
In terms of NBA free agency, we're still sitting here
in the middle of the summer talking about where Lebron
James is going to end up, and so I think
the fans like it from that standpoint.

But sports are just different now.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
I mean, guys are going to stay on your team
for fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years anymore. So it's gonna it's
constantly changing, constantly evolving. And yes, I do think it's
good for a sport. I don't think it. I don't
think it hurts the sports fan. I guess as long
as they know their team is trying to get better
and trying to win.

I just think from the sports fan perspective, like the
era of NBA players spending their entire career with one teams,
it's basically non existent at this point.

Where it's Steph Curry, I mean, it's graymond Green.

And in that situation with the Warriors, you have somebody
like Klay Thompson who becomes a Golden State fan favorite
become a cap casualty because you're looking at where the
second apron is structured with this NBA, and you're being
discouraged from keeping that core together. Where if you go
back to the early two thousands, Tim Duncan plays all
nineteen seasons in San Antonio, manud Genobili plays all sixteen

seasons in San Antonio, Tony Parker plays his first seventeen seasons,
he goes to Charlotte for that eighteen season.

Yes, that core can't stay together in today's NBA.

No, there's no way it would be impossible. But you're listen.
It's the same thing in college football, right Taylor. It is.

I mean, you essentially have guys quarterbacks, second third string quarterbacks.
If they're not gonna start at Ohio State, they're gonna
leave Ohio State and go to Michigan or go somewhere else.
And so I think that gets the fan base as
excited as long as they think, again, their university, their program,
or their professional team is making an attempt to get better.
But you're never gonna see that again. You're never gonna
have where you can wake up every single day and

know this burs starting five, those days are long got

I guess that's the point I'm trying to make from
the fan experience, where you're losing that attachment to players
where if for the college example that you just gave,
there used to be a time where you knew who
the starting lineup was for North Carolina. You knew who
the starting lineup was for Duke. Now it feels like
I'm going to turn on a Carolina game and it's
anybody's guess who that starting five is going to be, right,

And it feels, almost to a certain extent, like these
players are becoming mercenaries where they're just going to the
highest dollar.

Well they are, but that's what the players wanted, I mean,
and they wanted this forever. If you think of those
teams back in the early eighties with North Carolina where
it was Sam Perkins and Michael Jordan and James Worthy,
Big Game James, I think Keddy Smith was on those teams.
What of those three guys Perkins, Worthy, Jordan, Probably Perkins
would be like, hey, why'd be the number three here

when I could be the number one at NC State
where I could be the number one at Virginia. And
one of those three probably would have transferred if they
had the abilit to transfer at the top.

Yeah, the new second apron rules are are basically encouraging
team turnover, where it almost feels like I don't know
how the players accepted this in their in their latest CBA.
This feels like a case where the owners kind of
just push them around because it's either becoming you're on
a super max contract or you're on one of these

these very team friendly deals. Like there's no really like
these mid level players anymore getting mid level deals. And
Stu the only reason I'm kind of bringing this up today. Yeah,
as a Nick fan, I could see the riding on
the wall.

Karl Anthony Towns is signed through next year. Yeah, if
he declines his player option after next season, he's eligible
for the same four year, two hundred and seventy three
million dollar contract that Donovan Mitchell.

Yeah, but you're seeing the case where you think we're
gonna lose Karl Anthony Towns.

It's going to be impossible to afford Karl Anthony Towns
and Jalen Brunson.

It's hard to see the Knicks paying him that level.
Of deal when you know a Jalen Brunson payday is
eventually coming. Jalen Brunson is the team's captain. If you're
having to pick between Karl Anthony Towns getting this level
deal or Jalen Brunson getting this level deal, I think
the Knicks are giving it to Jalen Brunson every time

the Knicks won a title because Jalen Brunson took this
pay cut that allowed more roster flexibility. That's not really
the norm for the NBA.

against Jacksonville and blank the bed in Denver. There's no
