don't get too frustrated if I don't hit it well.

AJ when you guys started the Pat McAfee show. I
know you guys did shows at the start of COVID
separate from the McAfee show, but did you ever think
it could get to where it is debt now.

No, I mean obviously not and and Pat had it
going a while before I joined him, but I started
joining pretty consistently once COVID hit. But no, I mean
I've had no clue whom we're starting at what it
would be now and just what the Yeah, it's crazy,
so many awesome things that that we get to do
and go watch these college the college football playoff on

the sidelines and do these watch alongs.

Awesome to watch the game from the end zone like
it's It makes me even a bigger fan of college
football getting to do that kind of stuff.

gambled on himself and there's a lot of you know,
there's a great lesson to be learned there.

and he's been on with us a bunch of times,

I was floored by that.

I guess maybe I'm applying my own sensibilities that I
apologize in advance, but I didn't have you as a
guy who's sitting down giving a lot of thoughts to

depends who the card is going to.

I've always been yeah, I don't know. Brady, I know
has said that a few times. Yeah, and yeah, I
don't know exactly what he's talking about. Sometimes I'll write,
you know, you get a birthday card from my mother
in law or whoever, my mom or my dad or
my brothers. Yes, like you, I'll take a little bit
of time. I'm a creative human. I'm terrible with numbers,
can't do math, but I can. I feel like I'm

creative and have an imagination. And I always trying to
tell my kids, you need to have an imagination, and
I think I do so sometimes I try to express
that when I'm writing cards to people in my family.

What's something that people don't know about Brady?

Yes, this is your chance, AJ, let's go. I mean,

Every time I see him in which I see him
all the time, and he lives very like every time,
like you, such a giant human, just a big handsome dude.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
And he's but he's all.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
He's like a he's just he's not a real character
because he's that he's such a big, handsome, awesome due.
But he's actually like the best dude and super nice
and it cares about everybody, like the biggest family dude
of all times. Yes, it's awesome having him. He was
in Florida, now he's back in Ohio.

It's great to have a brother in law that you
get along with.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Right the other way, right, My.

Other brother in law, Jack Johnson, is the man as well,
played hockey in the NHL over twenty years and the
nicest dude too. See, I'm very lucky. Yes, my brothers
and my caddie out here. He has been for like
seven really. Yeah, that's nice.

Yeah, what do you remember most about your last game
at Ohio State against Brady Quinn. In the lead up
to that game, oh man, yeah, we were playing the
Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Yeah, my senior year. There
was a bunch of like weird media stuff.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Early on.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
They found out that I was going out with his
sister and we weren't engaged actually at the time, but like, oh,
it's I don't know how it got public.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
But then there's like a little that stupid old school yeah,
I guess it's probably before.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
The internet, right, stuff like that. And then we played
and luckily we won and I got I sacked Brady
a few times in that game. A great team though,
they were awesome.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Yeah, do you mind him of it all the time?
Though you don't have to right now. I don't need
to look at that dude like he was a giant.
He would have ran me over.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
I had to multiple times, like he would have absolutely
would have killed and I had to protect myself.

If I told you, even back then that one day
twenty twenty six that Indiana would dominate college football, you
would have told me.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
What obviously, I would have left. Had a hard time
believe you. But I mean, anything can happen now if
you like. And I was at I was down there
watching Indiana in person, Indiana, and like I said, in
these watchlongs we do, and I was blown away with
how they played, like they were so disciplined. Like I'm
I'm like a football nerd when I see defense play
well with the proper the proper leverage.

And this day he's spilling it to his outside backer
and you're holding your gap. All this stuff in Indiana
like they didn't have. They played so hard and they
were so disipate. It was like a thing of beauty
watching them play.

The American Century Championship is such a great event. You're
out here every single year, Like, what do you love
so much about this?

Man? I mean, just look around, like it's unbelieve there's

The lake's legit. It's great. Giddy in the lake every
morning and jump in. It's freezy.

You go in every morning, Yeah, it's like yeah, wow,
you know everyone's in the cold, plunging.

You got to do your whole morning routine, garlagion, Are
you tell me show up to the lake tomorrow morning?
You're gonna be there. Yeah, we were there at like
five fifteen that I go in with you tomorrow.

Yeah, it's a little bit of a mental test when
you walk on it's forty eight degrees outside with forty nine.

Well, what's what's the key? Do you like tiptoe win
or you just jump right in? You gotta jump right in, right, I.

Mean, I think you know the answer. There's no tiptoe.

Why does Impact come out here anymore? Like he was
out here a few years ago. I haven't seen him
saying I hope he comes back. I don't know him.

Mean, he's got he is too busy, and he's got
two young kids and just had another. So it's uh,
obviously hopefully comes back next year. It was awesome. I
got to play with him three days two years in
a row. Yeah. What's the thing you missed the most
about football? Is there anything? Yeah?

Man, football is awesome. I miss all everything about football.
But I'm realistic and it's not like a you know,
I knew when I stopped playing, like, yeah, I can't
play anymore. But man, I I get so excited watching it,
like when I watched like I say, in person, and
you know, I watch my kids play as well, and
it's just it's fun, it's physical.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, it's great, ay J.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
The Big ten has won the last three national championships
as a Big ten guy yourself? Is it Big ten
versus the world right now? Because there's always the talk
with the SEC, But it feels like the Big ten
is kind of good.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
I mean Big ten is awesome, man, the SEC is awesome.
I have a hard time like creating an argument with that.
I think I think they're they're the tip of the spear,
both of them, and I think it's it's awesome and
it's fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
But I don't have a I can't sit here and
im my high horse talking about Bick. I think the
Big ten is amazing. I think the SEC.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
I have so many buddies that played in the SEC,
and they're some of the biggest and best athletes and
best players of all time.

We were watching you on the I wasn't watching you,
my producer was, and I'm feeling like I should put
a flyer on you, like I feel like this could
be a top ten finish for you.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
What do you think? Huh? Yeah, I mean I think
my my previous best finish is like fifty second. I
know my kids tell my kids every day, I'm gonna
win it.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I'm gonna win the America Central Championship. Okay, Dad, fifty
eighth place, so they're gonna I can't win. I'm gonna
tell him my game's really rounded in the form you are.
So a top fifty sounds better now? Top twenty?
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Sure?

Sure, I'm coming from the first place gets a lab
coat now, so I'm going for first.

How many rounds of golfa you played before you got here?
I got that many. I'm guessing I'm four or five.
I'd say, Okay, played a couple with Brady as a
as a as an athlete, as a world class athlete.
Does it bother you when guys like Taylor twelve men
are like, hey, I.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Played two rounds this year, and then they go out
like four at the bar.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
You know he's there, Hey, guess what he was in
lake yesterday this morning? But I saw him yesterday he
was getting in there and he knows all twelve it was, yeah,
he's a golfer. Y. I know we had him all
the other days an athlete, so yes, I just those
guys had that silky smooth swing and the ball in
the fairway that they know when they t off that
the ball.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Is going to be in play. That would be a
great feeling I have. I've been chasing that one. Were
you into the US soccer at all? Yeah, it was sweet.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
I'm not a huge soccer guy, but I respect what
they do. Man, I respect watching those guys play. I
didn't think I would. I didn't think i'd watch as much,
and I did. They forced us to watch. Yeah, it
was awesome, it was cool. I don't I don't I
claim to understand what it's about and what they should
be doing it now that should be playing, but I
respect how they play, and you know, I love that
the coach gets into play hard and be tough.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Great, it's awesome.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
You mentioned how many cool things you've gotten to do
as a member with the McAfee show. Is there anything
still on your sports bucket list where you're like, man,
it would be really cool if we could.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Check this out. That's a good question.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
Yes, I honestly, I don't know if I can give
you an answer. That's awesome. Are we I've done something.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Winning this thing? I mean, oh yeah, yeah, that's the
top of the list.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
It's up there winning out here, yes, And there's so
many awesome things, Like I've been super lucky to get
to experience a lot of awesome things even after playing
football now like to be in awesome events. But yeah,
why not win it out here? I mean, I don't, man,
these guys are seriously watching. They're like they're putting their
alignment sticks out here.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
A friend of mine, it's it's a ridiculous he's playing
nine tournaments already.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
I put money on Marty. I have put up at
all my money on Marty. Yeah, he can play it,
but there's a lot there's a lot of guys that
can win it though.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Yeah, does golf trop be crazy? Though? Like everything?
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Like no, but athletics have come fairly easy to you.
I imagine your entire life, and this game's hard, man,
it is.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
But being an athlete helps with any kind of game
or sport you can play. But you don't have to
be an athlete to be a great golfer, right.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
So I don't. That's not a slight to anyone.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
I just think you're so many different, Like, just because
someone's an awesome athlete, it doesn't mean it doesn't always
translate to golf. It usually doesn't like it's getting it
crazy sometimes seeing how ugly some swings are off some
of the people the greatest athletes, yes.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
We know, yes, yeah, and I'm not true. Mine's not
pretty at all. Look at Trey Wingo out there. Does
he look like an athlete to you? I mean that
guy could mulca golf ball though. I'm Donelle Young Ernie
el donkey. But the two to eighty down the fairway,
every single druve, I believe it.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Oh if so listen, I have a ridiculous take and
I just want to get your thoughts on it. I
think Caleb Williams is going to be the greatest quarterback
we've ever seen. Am I nuts?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
I mean, time will tell right now. But well, Lessen,
this is sports radio. We have to give an instant.
I think he's awesome. He's been you know.

I played for the Packers for nine years, so I
think it's awesome that the Bears are good and that
they're there. It's a huge rivalry, and I think Caleb's amazing.
Their whole team. I like how they're coach man, I
like how they play. But also I love the Packers
and I feel good about them. Where they're going, Yeah,
Adrie am my sports bucket list. I still have to
check off lambeau Field. But I hate cold football, So

it feels like that's kind of did you play football?

Like playing? He was a walk out of Carolina. Yeah,
I walk on in North Carolina.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
But the second the season hit, like November, is when
I start packed it in. But I gotta start shutting
it down on the scout team.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
So it wasn't noticeable.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Oh yeah, it was like the calendar hits November. It's
like a towner is going to be checked out. Somebody
else was gonna get the scout teach. How long did
you last?
Speaker 3 (11:12):
I played three years as walk Good for you. Then
he didn't completely package. Yeah, so its not like cold weather. Yeah,
little fingers get hurt when I get in the.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Well.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I was.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
I kind of was with the mindset I'm on the
scout team. I'm never going to get off the scout team.
And when you get hit in the cold, it stings
a little more. Yeah, that's why you got to be
the hammer not the nail man. I was exclusive, but
sometimes it hurts being both. But yes, I would rather
win on that side. Say so, you wouldn't sell you
lose some though. I was on the scout kickoff team
(11:43):
where the guy would come and blindside you every time.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Did you guys go full go? Yes? Yeah, so I
was the nail. That was his role.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
I mean, so did you have to act like you
didn't know this was No, they wouldn't tell us what
look it was going to be, and then I would
get blindsided and hey, just look this way, Bud, don't
don't peak because yes, yes, bron coming.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
To ear hole the other time? Was you toughness?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Huh?

It was the Georgia Tech when Georgia Tech would run
the option and I was the guy who would have
to dive at people's knees and they would just kind
of punch you away. So I was always the nail
when it came to my walk on career in North Carolina.
But I want to go to cold football. Is there
anything you could kind of give tips on unbelievably.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Wrapped that back in the cold football? Yes, he brought
a full circle. So any tips for cold football?
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Yeah, just take care of your honestly your little fingies
in your your feet, hands and feet, so where like, uh,
you'd wear like surgical gloves underneath football gloves. That helps
a little bit. People put vasiline on their arms. I mean,
you try it. It doesn't really do a whole lot.
But if your fingers feel okay and you and your
toes are all right, it's not bad.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
You can do it.

We'll get you out of here on this note. And
we appreciate you doing this for us. I was, I
was in a shuttle last night. Uh, and Adam thiel
And is telling a story that a that's someone else
in that shuttle dislocated he shoulder during an NFL game
and it was Charles Woodson. And Woodson was hearing this
for the first time, like he knew he dislocated someone's shoulder,

he didn't know what was felix. And so I'm wondering,
are there guys that you have hurt where you just
have an even like friends of years where you just
didn't realize it was that person that later on in
life they were like, Hey, you're the guy who broke
my knee.

Yes, I don't know. I don't know if I've been confronted.
That is that strange that Woodson wouldn't know that though, No,
it's not. It's not.

Once that I was I played one year with the Bengals,
Brian Hartline was on the Browns and I never asked
hard about it, but I need to write I like
retraced he I was a crushing the quarterback. I think
I retrased and I went back and he caught a
ball and he started to turn up and I hit
him directly in the back of the head, and.

I thought he was out for a second. I thought
he was out there and he popped up because he's
tough his nails.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
And I've never asked him, but I don't know if
he was out or not great to him either. But
does he know you don't know if well, does he
know it was you? No, we've never talked. I don't
know why I've never fly wouldn't remember that.

I'm going to sprinkle a little bit of cash on
you because you're you look that good that stand the range.
Your son turns to me. You're having a moment with him,

and he says, don't.

You know what I called myself? Ranger Rick the Tiger
Woods was standing there.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
He might think competition, but right, So this is your
first time. Is this your first time in late Tahoe period.
Speaker 7 (15:17):
Yeah, we came up here. You know, the the Niners
do an outstanding even here for their sponsors. They call
it they moved it. But when I first got to
the Niners and it was Winterfest, right, and it was
out here.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
But this is your first American Century Championships. So you're
doing carry okay today?
Speaker 3 (15:32):
God? No, why you have to? I think you have to.
I'll feel you guys in. I was actually inquire back
in high school. I was inquired. That is shocked my wife.
It's a good way to meet girls. That's a heavy play, coach,
But we're not singing. But you have a good singing voice.
Then if you inquire, depends on who you're talking in

the shower. It sounds awesome, right, Well, just like on
the range, the game, the performance anxiety or something.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
But you know these guys all right, so you know
like this is this is a big brotherhood, right, They're
all really tight.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
They're gonna put some pressure on you to saying Gary, ok,
they canna have a gun to my coach.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
You broke into coaching back in two thousand and two
at Michigan State. You were making six hundred dollars a month. Yeah,
when you think back to those days, what's something that
experience taught you that you still carry with you today?
Speaker 7 (16:26):
Hilly, We spent six hundred dollars a week in door dash.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
That's it, Huh. I have twin girls. I mean it's
more for me on one person.
Speaker 1 (16:35):

Speaker 7 (16:36):
Lots lots going on, you know, like I'm fortunate. I've
I was in the banking industry beforehand, and you know,
I've always Uh, I shouldn't say I always, but what
I've learned is that if you do what you love,
it'll love you back. And that's kind of what going
through that making it wasn't about money for me, like
I was making good money at the bank than not,
like waking up in the morning, going and jumping in
(16:57):
rush hour traffic, driving to nine.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
O'clock job leaven at five and people were great. Just
didn't like doing it.
Speaker 7 (17:03):
And in my message to anyone who's willing to listen
is that if you if you do what you love,
it'll love you back somehow, some way. They may not
love you with money, but it'll love you with peace
of mind and and actual joy and we we got
a short time on earth, might as.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Well enjoy it. I love that. What do you love
about coaching so much? Uh?
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Just there's so many layers. There's there's the teaching part
of it. There's the competitive part of it. There's the
every day is something new part of it. There's, uh,
the brotherhood part of it. There's, there's so many layers
to it. In terms of football, it's sport.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
You know.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
I grew up in sport. I I was, I was,
I was.
Speaker 7 (17:41):
I was a water boy for my brother's football team
when I was five years old. And uh, you know,
I just I don't know it any other way. My
son and I, even though he just took up golf,
he talks smack all the time about my golf game,
even though he hasn't he hasn't.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Beat me yet, but he's like, well, he just did
on the reins to me.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
And every day, every time I say it, he says,
I'm coming, you know, and he's comment, it's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
You're gonna be fending him off for as long as
you can, right, so, if you you know.
Speaker 7 (18:05):
So with regard to your question, man, I've learned that
if you truly love something you you you throw all
your heart and passion into it.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Something that's gonna happen. So this is your second head
coaching stamp.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
What you learn the first time around that you'll hopefully
won't make the same mistakes the second time around.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
That's a laundry list, man, you know. But but I
always try to try to create a parallel for people
ask me that question. So for like, you, what have
you learned since your first day being a host to
listen better? Yeah, but like, like, there's no handbook, There
is no handbook. You just learn and you learn and
you do things and you have conviction on what you're doing,
(18:43):
and then like, eh, I want a good idea, and
then you step back and you reevaluate and you debrief
yourself and then you find ways to improve upon everything
that you've done. And there's some things that we did
at the JETS that I thought were great and we'll
continue to do. There's some things that I didn't like
that will change, and there's and there's some things but
I think we're good that probably won't work out here
and we're gonna.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Have to change it up.
Speaker 7 (19:03):
So you just got to keep an open mind, keep
evolving keep asking yourself hard questions and evaluating and being
truthful with yourself with regards to was what you're doing
in that moment good enough? And if the answers yes,
keep it going. If it's not, you got to change it.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
So it's not any one thing, it's just constantly it's
interesting coach.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
We love cam Ward as a defensive minded coach. What
jumps off the tape when you watch cam Ward.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
He's talented.
Speaker 7 (19:30):
First off, he's talented, but like, I don't think the
tape and and I say this respectfully because I think
his tape is fantastic. I don't think the tape really
doesn't justice because you know, I came in, we studied them,
you know, we played them last year when I was

and you're just trying to get a feel for the man.
Being around him, watching him practice, watching his day to
day habits has created a whole new appreciation for him.
He's got an elite mindset. Uh, he can move on
to the next place like he has he has very

very short term memory.

Yeah, And and to be honest with you, like when
we go move the ball in practice, I mean I
don't think we've stopped him yet. You know, he's just
a elite improviser. He can play within structure, he can

And but but most importantly, like the man, he's elite, and.

That's the most important for you by far. Yeah, so
your defense has to be like that's that's awesome for
your defense, only only from the standpoint. I know you
get mad at them because they can't stop them, but
they're not going to face too many guys as talented
as he is.

I look at like we're gonna be all right. I
know that. But I look at my coordinator when he
throws a ball, and I'm like, he's giving a little
fist pump on. But it's like, you know, you're the
head coach.

People don't realize that one thing I always get when
people see me in person, They're like, Wow, you're a
lot bigger in person than I thought. While I'm standing
next to six foot five monsters right football field.

And so so keeping that in mind, you think about
Dan Campbell, Mike Vrabel, Kevin O'Connell, Demiko Ryans, all the
former players.

They're freaking huge. Yes, Kevin O'Connell's shocked us.

They're just they're just they're just enormous balls of muscle. Yes,
and like like they're they're professional athletes for a reason.
So I'll give you as this story. So, I was
twenty five years old and I was probably in the
best shape of my life. I was about two thirty. Uh,
just elite and just in tremendous shape. I was running
with the guys, with the players when I was a
quality control out of Houston, and I was lifting with them,

and I could throw with all of them. And so Demiko,
we draft to Miko Ryans and we do a pair
up drill. But there's only it's an odd number of
linebackers and I've got to pair up with it. So
I'm the I'm the assistant linebackers coach. I was like,
you know, I'll pair up with Tomko and we're doing
this shock drill, right, And so the linebackers coach, Johnny
Holland goes, do you want a bag? I was like, Noah,
I'm good, and he just two hand jams me and

knocks the wind.

You know, like, I don't think people really understand how strong, Yes,
these professional athletes are. So with the whole royal rumbo question,
just just list all the professional the ones that were
former professional athletes left them.

by themselves. Well all of all the other guys go
over here somewhere and play a lone.

a golf ball because you're killing it on the tee
on the driving range. But when you get out there
and people are watching, it's a whole different thing, right,

And you know, my son asked me, be goes Dad,
you're out on the football field. That doesn't bother that
while I'm in my element.

the golfers are like that, right, Like I don't think
Tiger Woods goes up there at Rory or all those
guys are like, oh my god, someone's watching me, you know,
just critiquing every little bit of my swinging.

Yes, you know, they've got eliite confidence. They're in their element.
They can do it.

But you know, it's a different dynamic for sure, and uh,
you know, the the and and truth be told. Like
I'm sure a lot of these guys. When we go
golfing with people, everyone's generous, like.

like the whole thing is different.

sees the game and just teaching me a lot.

and to have him just kind of explain how he
sees the game in the space that they're chasing really
helped me evolve as a coordinator and just the way
he prepares his players. And look, I've just been fortunate,
you know, my entire career between Kyle Shanahan, his dad
was a big part of it for me in the
early parts of me being a decordinator. Gary Kubiak and

and then you look at Pete Carroll and his staffs

at Ohio State against Brady Quinn. In the lead up
to that game, oh man, yeah, we were playing the
Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Yeah, my senior year. There
was a bunch of like weird media stuff.

Early on.

They found out that I was going out with his
sister and we weren't engaged actually at the time, but like, oh,
it's I don't know how it got public.

But then there's like a little that stupid old school yeah,

The internet, right, stuff like that. And then we played
and luckily we won and I got I sacked Brady
a few times in that game. A great team though,
they were awesome.

He would have ran me over.

I had to multiple times, like he would have absolutely

these watchlongs we do, and I was blown away with
how they played, like they were so disciplined. Like I'm

well with the proper the proper leverage.

Man, football is awesome. I miss all everything about football.
But I'm realistic and it's not like a you know,
I knew when I stopped playing, like, yeah, I can't
play anymore. But man, I I get so excited watching it,
like when I watched like I say, in person, and

it's just it's fun, it's physical.

The Big ten has won the last three national championships
as a Big ten guy yourself? Is it Big ten

Played two rounds this year, and then they go out
like four at the bar.

You know he's there, Hey, guess what he was in
lake yesterday this morning? But I saw him yesterday he
was getting in there and he knows all twelve it was, yeah,
he's a golfer. Y. I know we had him all
the other days an athlete, so yes, I just those
guys had that silky smooth swing and the ball in
the fairway that they know when they t off that
the ball.

Is going to be in play. That would be a
great feeling I have. I've been chasing that one. Were
you into the US soccer at all? Yeah, it was sweet.

I'm not a huge soccer guy, but I respect what
they do. Man, I respect watching those guys play. I
didn't think I would. I didn't think i'd watch as much,
and I did. They forced us to watch. Yeah, it
was awesome, it was cool. I don't I don't I
claim to understand what it's about and what they should
be doing it now that should be playing, but I
respect how they play, and you know, I love that
the coach gets into play hard and be tough.

he didn't completely package. Yeah, so its not like cold weather. Yeah,
little fingers get hurt when I get in the.

I kind of was with the mindset I'm on the
scout team. I'm never going to get off the scout team.
And when you get hit in the cold, it stings
a little more. Yeah, that's why you got to be
the hammer not the nail man. I was exclusive, but
sometimes it hurts being both. But yes, I would rather
win on that side. Say so, you wouldn't sell you
lose some though. I was on the scout kickoff team

where the guy would come and blindside you every time.

Did you guys go full go? Yes? Yeah, so I
was the nail. That was his role.

I mean, so did you have to act like you

It was the Georgia Tech when Georgia Tech would run
the option and I was the guy who would have
to dive at people's knees and they would just kind
of punch you away. So I was always the nail
when it came to my walk on career in North Carolina.
But I want to go to cold football. Is there
anything you could kind of give tips on unbelievably.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Wrapped that back in the cold football? Yes, he brought
a full circle. So any tips for cold football?
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Yeah, just take care of your honestly your little fingies
in your your feet, hands and feet, so where like, uh,
you'd wear like surgical gloves underneath football gloves. That helps
a little bit. People put vasiline on their arms. I mean,
you try it. It doesn't really do a whole lot.
But if your fingers feel okay and you and your
toes are all right, it's not bad.

was in a shuttle last night. Uh, and Adam thiel
And is telling a story that a that's someone else
in that shuttle dislocated he shoulder during an NFL game

he didn't know what was felix. And so I'm wondering,
are there guys that you have hurt where you just
have an even like friends of years where you just
didn't realize it was that person that later on in
life they were like, Hey, you're the guy who broke

Once that I was I played one year with the Bengals,
Brian Hartline was on the Browns and I never asked
hard about it, but I need to write I like
retraced he I was a crushing the quarterback. I think
I retrased and I went back and he caught a
ball and he started to turn up and I hit
him directly in the back of the head, and.

I thought he was out for a second. I thought
he was out there and he popped up because he's
tough his nails.

And I've never asked him, but I don't know if
he was out or not great to him either. But
does he know you don't know if well, does he
know it was you? No, we've never talked. I don't
know why I've never fly wouldn't remember that.

in high school. I was inquired. That is shocked my wife.

But you know these guys all right, so you know
like this is this is a big brotherhood, right, They're

they canna have a gun to my coach.

You broke into coaching back in two thousand and two
at Michigan State. You were making six hundred dollars a month. Yeah,
when you think back to those days, what's something that
experience taught you that you still carry with you today?
Speaker 7 (16:26):
Hilly, We spent six hundred dollars a week in door dash.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
That's it, Huh. I have twin girls. I mean it's
more for me on one person.
Speaker 1 (16:35):

Lots lots going on, you know, like I'm fortunate. I've
I was in the banking industry beforehand, and you know,
I've always Uh, I shouldn't say I always, but what
I've learned is that if you do what you love,
it'll love you back. And that's kind of what going
through that making it wasn't about money for me, like
I was making good money at the bank than not,
like waking up in the morning, going and jumping in
(16:57):
rush hour traffic, driving to nine.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
O'clock job leaven at five and people were great. Just
didn't like doing it.
Speaker 7 (17:03):
And in my message to anyone who's willing to listen
is that if you if you do what you love,
it'll love you back somehow, some way. They may not
love you with money, but it'll love you with peace
of mind and and actual joy and we we got
a short time on earth, might as.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Well enjoy it. I love that. What do you love
about coaching so much? Uh?
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Just there's so many layers. There's there's the teaching part
of it. There's the competitive part of it. There's the
every day is something new part of it. There's, uh,
the brotherhood part of it. There's, there's so many layers
to it. In terms of football, it's sport.

You know.

I grew up in sport. I I was, I was,
I was.
Speaker 7 (17:41):
I was a water boy for my brother's football team
when I was five years old. And uh, you know,
I just I don't know it any other way. My
son and I, even though he just took up golf,
he talks smack all the time about my golf game,
even though he hasn't he hasn't.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Beat me yet, but he's like, well, he just did
on the reins to me.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
And every day, every time I say it, he says,
I'm coming, you know, and he's comment, it's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
You're gonna be fending him off for as long as
you can, right, so, if you you know.
Speaker 7 (18:05):
So with regard to your question, man, I've learned that
if you truly love something you you you throw all
your heart and passion into it.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Something that's gonna happen. So this is your second head
coaching stamp.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
What you learn the first time around that you'll hopefully
won't make the same mistakes the second time around.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
That's a laundry list, man, you know. But but I
always try to try to create a parallel for people
ask me that question. So for like, you, what have
you learned since your first day being a host to
listen better? Yeah, but like, like, there's no handbook, There
is no handbook. You just learn and you learn and
you do things and you have conviction on what you're doing,
(18:43):
and then like, eh, I want a good idea, and
then you step back and you reevaluate and you debrief
yourself and then you find ways to improve upon everything
that you've done. And there's some things that we did
at the JETS that I thought were great and we'll
continue to do. There's some things that I didn't like
that will change, and there's and there's some things but
I think we're good that probably won't work out here
and we're gonna.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Have to change it up.
Speaker 7 (19:03):
So you just got to keep an open mind, keep
evolving keep asking yourself hard questions and evaluating and being
truthful with yourself with regards to was what you're doing
in that moment good enough? And if the answers yes,
keep it going. If it's not, you got to change it.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
So it's not any one thing, it's just constantly it's
interesting coach.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
We love cam Ward as a defensive minded coach. What
jumps off the tape when you watch cam Ward.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
He's talented.
Speaker 7 (19:30):
First off, he's talented, but like, I don't think the
tape and and I say this respectfully because I think
his tape is fantastic. I don't think the tape really
doesn't justice because you know, I came in, we studied them,
you know, we played them last year when I was
at San Francisco, and I was like, man, it's a
really talented young man.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
And and you hear things. You know, you get the report,
you talk to.
Speaker 7 (19:51):
The college scouts, houses workout or his work ethic when
he's coming out of the draft and they talk about it,
and you're just trying to get a feel for the man.
Being around him, watching him practice, watching his day to
day habits has created a whole new appreciation for him.
He's got an elite mindset. Uh, he can move on
to the next place like he has he has very
(20:11):
very short term memory.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Yeah, so important.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
Yeah, And and to be honest with you, like when
we go move the ball in practice, I mean I
don't think we've stopped him yet. You know, he's just
a elite improviser. He can play within structure, he can
play on schedule, and he can he can improvise and uh.
And but but most importantly, like the man, he's elite, and.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
That's the most important for you by far. Yeah, so
your defense has to be like that's that's awesome for
your defense, only only from the standpoint. I know you
get mad at them because they can't stop them, but
they're not going to face too many guys as talented
as he is.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
I look at like we're gonna be all right. I
know that. But I look at my coordinator when he
throws a ball, and I'm like, he's giving a little
fist pump on. But it's like, you know, you're the
head coach.
Speaker 7 (20:56):
You can't here, So like when he throws dimes, I'm
like yes, And when we're making stop, I'm.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Like, just inside, I'm just just a ball of happiness.
That is so good.

You want to ask them about the Royal Rubble here, So, coach,
we have this debate all the time on the show.
If every NFL coach was entered into the Royal Rumble,
who would win after seeing you in person?
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Yeah, it's not even a question. So who would finish second?
I guess here's what I'll say.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
People don't realize that one thing I always get when
people see me in person, They're like, Wow, you're a
lot bigger in person than I thought. While I'm standing
next to six foot five monsters right football field.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Yes, now you're standing next to me. Yes, that's how
people see me.
Speaker 7 (21:34):
And so so keeping that in mind, you think about
Dan Campbell, Mike Vrabel, Kevin O'Connell, Demiko Ryans, all the
former players.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
They're freaking huge. Yes, Kevin O'Connell's shocked us.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
They're just they're just they're just enormous balls of muscle. Yes,
and like like they're they're professional athletes for a reason.
So I'll give you as this story. So, I was
twenty five years old and I was probably in the
best shape of my life. I was about two thirty. Uh,
just elite and just in tremendous shape. I was running
with the guys, with the players when I was a
quality control out of Houston, and I was lifting with them,

and I could throw with all of them. And so Demiko,
we draft to Miko Ryans and we do a pair
up drill. But there's only it's an odd number of
linebackers and I've got to pair up with it. So
I'm the I'm the assistant linebackers coach. I was like,
you know, I'll pair up with Tomko and we're doing
this shock drill, right, And so the linebackers coach, Johnny
Holland goes, do you want a bag? I was like, Noah,
I'm good, and he just two hand jams me and

knocks the wind.

Out of me.

You know, like, I don't think people really understand how strong, Yes,
these professional athletes are. So with the whole royal rumbo question,

and people are watching, it's a whole different thing, right,

and Chris Sims have a friendship that's that's unique and
their bond is close and I think that's special. So

like the most important thing you learned from Kyle Shanahan.

He's so good at his.

He is he he he helped me a lot as
a defensive coordinator, you know, just his the way he
sees the game and just teaching me a lot.

So you know, I played offense in college and then
and to have him just kind of explain how he
sees the game in the space that they're chasing really
helped me evolve as a coordinator and just the way
he prepares his players. And look, I've just been fortunate,
you know, my entire career between Kyle Shanahan, his dad
was a big part of it for me in the

get his brother down to the Florida Panthers. And I
would say, no, it's not the podcast. It's just a

Bill Zito, who takes credit for their podcast, and made
that deal and got them.

I feel like you two were gaining up on me
when you weren't asking that question. And then once the
camera stopped rolling, Matthew Chuck put his arm on me.
He was like, man, that was a funny question. I
was like, Matthew, I could have used you there to
say it was a funny question.

Well no, but the person you could have used was me,
and I just left you alone.

No, not only did you leave me alone, ye buried me.

Well, I did because you deserved it. It's the rare

not feel alone. Lord knows I have felt alone on
the radio many, many times over the last two decades,
with no one there to bullieve me or help support me.
And usually you have to give me credit.

You saw Matthew's confused look, and you were like, I'm
gonna jump on this right now.

Well, no, he had every reason to be confused. It
was a weird question, and like you kind of fumbled
around a little bit. You weren't terribly confident in how
you were asking it. It's okay, tailor, it happens. It's
a lot radio, I mean would shake it off now, Yeah,
but you did check it off. You really sat with you.

Listen, you remember the episode we did witstegatzat Hawk about
Chuck Norris the interview and I had the first question
because Dan decided that was the perfect time to throw
it to me for the first time in show history,
the first time he would throw it to me to
ask the first question in an interview. And I watched
it and it was bad, and Dan crushed me. It
took me a year to get the stench off. Okay,

And Matthew was like. I saw Matthew later and he
was like, did you ask Brady that question too? And
I was like, no, we didn't get the chance to

Carr looks at times like he can win this thing,
and so does Ray Allen, and so does Adam Thielen.
But there's really only one guy. Two guys Joe Pavloski
who won whatever Tomato Tomato, the guy who won it

last year, and Marty Fish. And I find it hard
to believe if Marty Fish is on his game that
anyone's going to beat Marty Fish.

That's where I'm putting my money this week.

So Marty Fish and Pavelski are co favorites three to one.
Steph Curry and John Smoltz are next at seven to two.
In terms of volume, more bets have been placed this
week on Steph Curry to win the tournament than any
other golfer. But the biggest liability according to sportsbooks, this
weekend at the American Century Championship, and he guesses on

who it is? Who do people want to put a
flyer on to see if he could win it.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
It can't beat Parkley, Steve Gotts at Parkley, come on,
the longest odds of anybody each in the field. Yes here,
you know what, seventy five hundred to one, So a
one hundred dollars bet would win you seven hundred and
fifty thousand dollars if the round amount of rebound can
win this damn thing.

But he's not.

I want to start a sports book. Everyone send those
bets to me, and what I'll send you back.

Is a lighter A lot would have to go right
for Charles Barkley to win this.

he has the longest odds of anybody in this field. Yeah,
he finished sixty ninth last year. That's better than Ray

There's a ton of names that Charles Barkley beat last year.
And then you're telling me Charles Barkley has the worst

odds of anybody. Put some respect on sir Charles's name.
Give me some head to head odds. Let me let
me take rich eyes in versus Charles Barkley. Anybody, anybody
want to give me that action back here, I'll take you.
