Speaker 2 (00:14):
This is the Best of Stugatz & Company live on
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Taylor, put it on the poll, please. That's Stugatz798x.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Do you have to pull the plug on the fireworks
show if you lose at home as a 30-point favorite?
Rutgers last night loses at home to UMass. UMass got
paid over a million dollars for that game. Rutgers had
a firework show planned, scheduled after the game because, of course,
they thought they were going to win. They were favored
(00:44):
by 30 points over UMass. They lose the game and
still go forward with a firework show.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
I mean.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
See, if that's me and I'm taking my kid, I'm
not selling him on going to see Rutgers football. I'm like, hey,
do you want to go see some fireworks? But we
just have to watch this football game beforehand. So I
don't think you cancel the fireworks. I think that's why
everybody was there.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So the fireworks are the main attraction is what you're
saying for some.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yes, for some. Yes.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
Rutgers-UMass game was the warm-up act.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Right.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
My two biggest observations from yesterday's games. Yes. I've never
been more sure that Deion Sanders is going to be
the next Florida State coach. We're just trending towards that direction.
It was impressive how good Colorado looked in the trenches,
where Georgia Tech is normally a team that prides themselves
in that. And for the most part, Colorado was the
(01:35):
ones pushing them around. Like Georgia Tech scored their one
touchdown off a kick return. And then the other option
from Rutgers-UMass... We have never needed promotion and relegation more
in college football because there is no reason why Rutgers
should be playing Big Ten football.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
UMass should. Yeah, Pop Watson. Pop Watson.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Pop Watson transfers in from Virginia Tech, and that's kind
of what I love about the transfer portal, where a
team like UMass... spends years without beating an FBS opponent,
and then all of a sudden they have access to
a quarterback from Virginia Tech, Pop Watson, who he was
okay at Virginia Tech. He was nothing special. But against Rutgers,
you don't really need him to be special. You just
(02:18):
need him to be a competent quarterback.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Right.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
So let's just be clear on what it is you're saying.
Rutgers does not deserve to be in the Big 20?
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Go ahead, Mike.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
He looked at the UMass roster and went, I'm going
there and I'm going to be their Superman.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
By the way, is it Brent Key? Is that the
head coach at Georgia Tech? Is that his name?
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Yeah, he'll be there for eternity.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Willie?
Speaker 1 (02:43):
I mean, because he has a strut that I'm not
certain has been earned. I mean, he struts around like
a coach, like he's the best coach in America.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I love him.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
He looks like a football coach. But I'm not certain
he has earned the right to strut around the way
that he does. And I am not certain that he
has earned the right for Taylor to say that he'll
be at Georgia Tech forever.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
I mean... I think he lost his chance.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
I think if he was going to leave Georgia Tech
last offseason with all those job openings and he was
one of the sexy names getting thrown out, the fact
that he didn't and then comes out and loses to
Colorado at home, you might have missed.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Your window there, buddy.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
He's a Georgia Tech alum, and Georgia Tech is a
program in the ACC. They don't have national title expectations.
They don't have double-digit win expectations. This isn't the time
when Georgia Tech was running the triple option and dominating
the college football world. If Georgia Tech wins seven, eight
games a year and they're good for one upset every season,
(03:43):
Brent Key's got a job for life there.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Perhaps. Put that on the poll. You wait around for football.
I mean, you just wait and you wait and you wait.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And then finally you get Georgia Tech.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
You get Colorado. It's on a Thursday night. You're sitting there.
You're watching the game with your daughter.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
And she turns to you at some point in the
third quarter and says, Dad, this is really boring.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
And you have no answer. Hard to disagree.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
This is what I hate, though, because, yes, the game
was boring. Yes, I might have fallen asleep for parts
of the game. But then you wake up and you're saying, wait.
This game is still within striking distance. This score hasn't
changed since the last time my eyes were open. And
then they're lining up for the kick. Captain's their kicker.
They just need a... Field goal to win the game.
(04:34):
This is going to be his third walk-off field goal
at Georgia Tech. And we get a Colorado block field
goal to.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
End the game. Put it on the polls. Should the
kicker ever be your captain?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
It's a bad sign for.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Our team, yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
No, that's a bad look.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
I mean, you're looking for leadership in the kicker's room.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Unless you got, like, a grammatica out there. That's the
only exception I'll make for a kicker being a captain.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Right. Bear is going to join us here in a
few minutes.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
He'll get us ready for a college football week one
here with his picks, the NFL as well. Field Yates
is going to join us. Gino Toretta is going to
join us as well in.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Hour number two.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
How do you guys feel about Labor Day weekend? Sad weekend?
Fun weekend?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
A little bit of both?
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Because for me, it's the end of the summer, and
that makes me sad. Most people sad. But it's also
the start of football season.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
It's a bittersweet holiday weekend, is it not?
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yes.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Yeah, I wouldn't put it up there with Memorial Day
weekend or July 4th weekend, but the fact that It means, okay,
we're getting to football now.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
It's here.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I'm in.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
I'm in.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I think it's about where you're at in life. For you,
kids back to school, you get football. You don't care
about the summer. You hate the beach. You hate the sand.
You hate the sun.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I hate everything. Except football. But football. What a weekend
for you.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Getting to Labor Day weekend is a win for me
just because you're getting to college football. You're getting to
the NFL. And then, Stu, we're in South Florida. We're
saying goodbye to weather that's like 110 degrees and saying
hello to weather that's like 85 degrees. That's a win
for us.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
It won't be 85 down here for another five months.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Just in time for it to go back to 110.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Taylor, are you making a trip this weekend? Where are
you going this weekend?
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I'm considering doing a drive to Baton Rouge, but it's
like a 12-hour drive.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
The tickets are reasonable. The drive is the unreasonable part.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
It's hard to get to.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Up on a bird.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
No, it's very hard to get to from here, I think, yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
And you would have to fly to New Orleans and
then rent a car and drive from New Orleans to
Baton Rouge. And at this point, Mikey, I've missed the
window where flights were in my budget.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Not a bad drive. 12 hours.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
That's just 12 hours of me listening to a lot
of sports podcasts, really.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
You turned down a free trip to Dublin, Ireland to
see North Carolina play, and that was on a bird.
But you are willing to drive to Baton Rouge to
see LSU and Clemson, huh?
Speaker 4 (07:07):
I hate international football. It's the same game every year.
It's terrible football. I don't care if it's my alma mater.
I would rather go see football in SEC country and
be rubbing elbows with the folks in Baton Rouge.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Go Tigers!
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I figured no one loves international football more than you.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
You're 1-0 playing international football.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
People are going to retire that way too.
Speaker 2 (07:30):

We'll update the polls here in just a second.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Mikey A., what's your Saturday going to look like? We're
headed into Labor Day weekend, a full slate of college football.
College game day is on the air. I mean, the
big noon kickoff is on. It is all happening. What
is Mikey A. 's Saturday going to look like?
Speaker 5 (08:18):
I'm going to have both college game day and big
noon kickoff on on the two TVs in the morning.
I'll probably take a little bit of a break in
the midday and then it's just going to it's just
going to be nonstop college football.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, it's a.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Special day right up until midnight because I maintain that
the college football season does not start until Hawaii has
a home game at midnight Eastern and they do this weekend.
They are taking on Dan Mullen and his Elvis impersonator
and the UNLV running rebels.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
That is a beauty.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Because if you're up a lot of money, you double down,
you take Hawaii. If you're down a lot of money,
you double down, you take Hawaii. But you always take Hawaii.
Put it on the poll, Taylor. Do you always take Hawaii?
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Small spread in that one. I think it's three.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
I think it's four, actually. Wow. Yeah, yeah. I think
Hawaii's getting four. Getting four points at home. It's a gift.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Let's update the polls here uh we wrap up the
week uh every week uh by updating the polls here
actually got 790 on x uh taylor what do you have.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
For us when you think of elvis which city do
you think.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Of memphis easy it's wrong the two choices i don't
care what the polls were.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Memphis and las vegas 66 of the audience.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
Memphis yes 66% of the audience is wrong.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Big one here.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Did Carolina win or did TCU lose?
Speaker 3 (09:45):
You know what? I've been thinking about this all week.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
I have.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
And I think Carolina went out and won that football game.
I do.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
87% of the audience said yes.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
All right.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Really? That's what I voted. Congratulations, Taylor, on a bye week.
How about that?
Speaker 4 (10:07):
We might have lost a bye week, though, if you
saw the reports that came out yesterday.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
What? Lombardi?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
What happened? You didn't lose the bye week. You just
lost the GM.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
There was a defensive coordinator. There's sex. There's drugs.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Oh, Jesus. Not good. Not good.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Didn't I say earlier this week that what Pablo Torre
is about to find out is that Bill Belichick always
has the last laugh?
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Speaking of that poll, does Bill Belichick always have the
last laugh despite never laughing?
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
75% of the audience said yes.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
All right.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
This is a big one from Stu. Does Stanford have
all the ingredients to be a great college football program
except for the players?
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Yep, it'll be on display tonight, full display.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
I mean, beautiful stadium, great crowd, beautiful area of the country,
just no players.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
Every time you mention Stanford football, you mention Andrew Lux there,
like he's getting under center.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Listen, who knows? He finds the right judge. He might be.
He could now. He could now.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
76% of the audience says yes, Stanford does have all
the ingredients.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
I would say Carolina as well. They would be in
that conversation.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
As the school that has all the ingredients except the players,
Carolina would certainly be.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
There, right?
Speaker 4 (11:25):
It's like the Sleeping Giants conversation because Northwestern probably checks
a lot of those boxes too, like Major City.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
No doubt.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
The donors.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Yes, I told Mikey earlier during Studio Gots, Northwestern, one
of my picks.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Spoiler alert.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
That Northwestern, a sneaky good team coming out of the
Big Ten this year.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
How about that?
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Would you want a Harvard quarterback to be your quarterback?
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Hell no. My doctor, maybe.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
70% of the audience said no.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Right.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
Crazy.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
Big one here for Mel Kuyper. Are you done with
the sun?
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Mel Kuyper said to us this week, we love him.
He's on the Mount Rushmore of guests here. that he
is done with the sun. I responded, yeah, but the
sun looks good on you, man. Mel looked good. He
looked refreshed.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
What were the results here?
Speaker 4 (12:13):
62% of the audience said yes, they're done with the sun.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
I can't stand it.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Did Jeter have enough room to pull up before diving
into the stands?
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Yes, this is courtesy of Bob Ryan. Big for Bob Ryan.
In his Twitter feed, he just.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Started blasting out random thoughts 22 hours apart about Derek
Jeter's catch where he leapt.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Into the stands.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
71% of the audience said, yep, Jeter, a little bit theatric.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Big win for Bob.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
This one is courtesy of Charles Huff, the Memphis coach
who joined us this week.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yes, we're supposed to go there. Call play.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
Does everyone love an ice cream truck?
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Who doesn't?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
I mean, come on. 18% of the audience, because 82%
of the audience said yes.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Yeah, so 18. I mean, get a life.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
A couple more here. If you had $ 3. 9 billion, would
you spend it on the Angels?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
I wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
85% of the audience said no.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
But why am I presenting it as if all you
had was $ 3. 9 billion and that's it? Because if you
have $ 3. 9 billion, it stands to reason you have a
lot more.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Anyway.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
This one might be the record this week. Do we
all know Stu Gatz is never going back to a gym?
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Why are you laughing so hard, Taylor?
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Because we all know it. Well, I agreed with it. 97%
of the audience said yes.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
The 3% out there still thinks that these feet and
these eyes might see you, Jim, again.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Two more here.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Do people call Elon University the Harvard of the South?
Speaker 3 (14:09):
No one does that. You said it yesterday. It was ridiculous.
It's a good school. Elon's a good school. It's a
nice private school. It's beautiful. I know someone who's gone there.
It's a great place. It is not Harvard.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
79% of the audience said, nope, nobody calls it that.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I do.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Put this on the poll.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Would you take an Elon quarterback as a transfer or
a Harvard quarterback as a transfer?
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Last one here. And this is a big one.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Should hot seat coaches have to coach from a coffin?
And if they lose, we put the final nail in it.
One of our best ideas yet.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
A coffin game.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
86% of the audience said yes. Sign us up for
those games.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Those are the polls. All right, everyone, have a great
Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the college football.
