Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bippity boppity boo. How do you do?
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's our number one, our one of the Ben Mahler
Show podcast, and we are back behind the powerful microphones
of Fox Sports Radio on this Thursday, the thirteenth day
of August. And a massive story to lead off here
the sale of the Lakers for the second time in
(00:25):
less than a year.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
The Lakers are being passed around like a fruitcake at Christmas.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
And yeah, the Booby Prize, the crazy deal taking place
this week. So what kind of owner will Disney former
Disney boss Bob igerbe with the Lakers? Will take a
look at that. Also, how does the future look for
Mark Walter who's selling the Lakers as Dodger owner? The
feds are sniffing around Mark Walter. Now all of a
(00:54):
sudden he sells the Lakers. I will guarantee you that
was not the plan when he bought the Lakers to
own them for essentially less than a year. And where
are you at on Russell Westbrook's abrupt departure from the NBA.
He announced his retirement in a cheesy video online by.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
A Hollywood actor. We'll go there as well. You get
a second bite of the audio apple here it is
our number one.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Well it is a purple and gold, a purple and
gold hot potato. Did not have that on my radar.
Did not expect that to be a thing, but sure.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Enough it is a thing. Yes, I know. Welcmeme.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
In the beginning of another night of the Bend Malor Show.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
We are in the.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Air, m rewhere right on your doorstep as we set
off the trip wire. Be careful co stuck, coast, sported,
border and beyond on the vast and let me tell you,
uncommonly powerful microphones of fs are emminating live go live
(02:12):
from the flight deck as we saw on the Red
Eye flight. We're just taking off right now, so we
have a ways to go before we reach our cruising altitude.
So be aware of that, of course, because you know
there's a long way to go here. Gara teed Human
will be on the Red Eye flight all night long
from the world famous Fox Sports Radio studios where you
(02:35):
are locked in right now.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Boy, do we thank you for that?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Man?
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Do we thank you for that?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
So our lead story this hour from the end be
a come on, boys, tell me that much you hate
the show. Oh chow sucks, Maller, you're talking basketball. What's
wrong with you?
Speaker 1 (02:49):
You loser? That's why you're doing overnights. Talk about some
guy on the NFL.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
It's gonna get released at the end of training camp
that pulled his handy. That's what I want to hear. Okay, Well,
we have a mantra on on the program. We talk
about the big stories of the day, and let's just
kind of figure it out as we go.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Every day is a new day, Every day is new.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Some people say, ah, Mallard, how could you possibly do
sports radio all these years?
Speaker 1 (03:12):
It's the same crap every damn now. No, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Could you have imagined a couple of days ago if
I had told you one of the crown jewels, you'll
tell me one of the crown jewels of professional basketball
would be tossed around like a fruitcake.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
But here we are, here we are.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
So if you have not heard for some reason, maybe
you've been hiding a worried about the gravity collapsing.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
I survived. I survived the internet bull crap of.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
The day anyway, So if you miss it, the Los
Angeles Lakers, the once proud Los Angeles Lakers, are now
just being passed around like a collection plate. At a
tabernacle on a Sunday morning.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
It's just quite wild.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
It is absolutely wild. So the Lakers are being sold
to Josh Kushner, the brother of the guy working for Trump,
and Bob Iger, the Disney guy. Yeah, and the price
tag twelve point five billion with it be. I'm told
(04:25):
that's a lot of money. Twelve point five billion with be.
The franchise sale in fact said to be the biggest
in professional sports history, at least here in.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
America, and I believe the world.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
So A Kushner and Iiger, the two rich dudes, were
supposed to.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Buy the expansion team.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I was reading last week in one of those business
sports business websites that they were the favorite to buy
the Las Vegas expansion team. And then completely out of
left field, And if you've listened to my podcast over
the years, you know that that comes from Wrigley Field.
There used to be a mental hospital out past left
field at Wrigley Field, and the outfielders could hear people screaming,
(05:07):
mental patients screaming out in the outfield and left field.
So when they said out in left field, they were
talking about a mental hospital. So out of left field
the deal came together Mark Walter, Well he's got some problem,
doney man. He's a rich guy with problems, more money,
more problems. I heard that song years ago. Well, Mark
Walter is going to sell the controlling interest in the
(05:29):
Los Angeles Lakers. So in the span of a little
over a year, they will have gone from Genie Buss
to Mark Walter and now of Bob Iger, the Disney
guy who's no longer the face of Disney, and this
Josh Kushner weasel.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
So those guys will be the new owners.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Keep in mind that Mark Walter, with much fanfare, you
all explain to me, this is the greatest thing ever
that there's no stopping the Lakers now because of Mark Walter.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
That was what you told me. I believed you. You
lied to me. Uh you know what could stop Mark
Walter the FBI.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Uh So anyway, great, So Walter bought controlled Laker's some
geni boss last year a bit about ten billion dollars
asks nothing, it's pocket change.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
That was the valuation.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
And so that means the team went up two and
a half billion dollars in like nine months, so slightly
better than my stocks are doing.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
So pretty good there.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Now the deal still needs to be rubber stamp, which
is like a ninety nine point nine percent chance the
deal gets done. The NBA owners, of course, they call
them the governors because of Draymond Green.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
They're all woke over there. So the NBA Board of
Governors will vote on this. It's going to take a few.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Weeks and then the next meeting is scheduled for September.
I know we're very worried about that in New York City.
So that is a good jummy of all point, let
us discuss the question what kind of owner will Bob
Eiger be with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
We'll start with that. Then we'll get to the juicy stuff.
We'll start with that.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
So I've got medieval pirate treasure map, pawn shop, and
allergy season, and we will combine all of these things together,
and we are going to make a rotten, purple and
gold piece of fruit. Because it's it's pretty rotten right now.
All right, it's pretty rotten right now. So a we'll
(07:26):
begin with this. Bob Iger buying the Lakers makes a
lot of sense. I was thinking about it as I
was making my way into the studio here, and I
was like, well, how do I process all this, and
the historians, and you know who you are. The historians
spent the last several years, I guess it's been five
six years now, the historians of the team defending that
(07:49):
Goofy Bubble championship. And now we can say Bob Iger
made all of his money from that's right, Disney. So
the Lakers have officially become a Mickey Mouse franchise. Ha
ha yep, McKey Mouse, your McGee mouse. So enjoy your
(08:10):
little Mickey. You can get more Mickey Rosse rings. Now
I'm sure Bob Iger still knows a bunch people of Disney.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Now, that said, I don't think of Bob Iger as
an owner. He's a corporate overlord, is what he is.
And based on his track record. And you often when
you meet someone, you judge them off what you know
about their past and things like that. So when you
when you look at Bob Iger's resume at Disney, the
Lakers are not going to compete for titles.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
They're not.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
They're competing for your disposable income. They want in your wallet,
and they're gonna get in your wallet one way or another.
So I expect Disneyland economics to come to that little
Arena down there on skid Row in Downtown LA. That's
what I expect that under the disney Watch. Under the
Disney Watch, ticket prices at Disneyland, the inflation under Bob Iger,
(09:02):
they went up one hundred and seventy five percent, one
hundred and seventy five percent under this weasel, Bob Iger,
that's the guy that now owns the Lakers. That's his resume.
That's how he made all the money to buy the
Lakers by gouging Disney fans, by sticking it to the
people that love Mickey Mouse, Donald Goofy and all the.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Characters there in Disney.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Think about one hundred and seventy five percent inflation on
the price to go to Disneyland while Bob Iger was
in control and all.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
But wait, there's more.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
He added demand tears, the up charge at Disney right,
dynamic up charging at Disneyland.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Those fast passes. They've changed the name now.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
It's the old medieval treasure map, if you will, where
you monetize everything, right in this case, nostalgia. You monetize
that any kind of inconvenience, You put a price tag
on that, and you know you want to breathe extra
air oxygen costs money. You gotta have to pay some money.
(10:03):
That's purple and gold oxygen. Pay, pay, pay, pay the
man that kind of stuff. Now, the court side seats
have already been ridiculous for years with the Lakers, So
now they're gonna require an extra two bank robberies to
get those tickets, which is fine for those people, and
possibly a crypto scam, which is appropriate considering the arena.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
They play at and parking.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Of course, you're gonna need a loan officer to park
bypassing the halftime bathroom line. Unfortunately, we hate to tell
you that's gonna cost you thirty nine to ninety nine
for the Lakers Lightning Lane plus package. Iger is a
mad scientist, is Bob Iger. He knows how to turn
(10:46):
loyal fandom into his personal ATM machine.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Did it at Disney.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
And with a twelve point five billion dollars price tag. Yeah,
I gotta get that money in a little bit of
that back, right, And so somebody, not me, but maybe
you will be paying for the Magic Kingdom of Purple
and Gold. And it ain't gonna be Mickey Mouse. It
ain't gonna be Mickey Mouse. Who's paying for that?
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Now? Page two. Let's get into Standle radio. The Standle.
Oh yeah, we got a good one. We got a
good one.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
No man, Well, it seems that things are not going
great for Mark Walter, the man that decided to buy
the Lakers went through the entire vetting process just to
flip it like a HGTV show. We you flip a house.
Don't only do that with professional sports teams. So Mark
Walder his sudden decision to get out.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Well it it likely is not what you think it is.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
I mean, some people say, wow, it's just a smart
business decision made two and a half billion dollars.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
These people are.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Called losers carrying the water for Mark Walter, and I'm
not gonna do that.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I'm gonna take what's actually going on from what I've heard.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
So, Mark Walder, the sudden sale of the Lakers, it
was nine months, I believe was the number that I
saw after he got formal approval from the NBA to.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Own the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
So nine months less than a year after buying the Lakers,
and that has raised a lot of legitimate questions about
whether his stake in the Dodgers could eventually be sold,
which will.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Then lead to shohial Tani being able to leave.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
The Dodgers got a thing, this contract the team sold,
he can exit, which is a legitimate possibility. This could
be out Tony's final season with the Dodgers. And people
aren't talking about this. But I'm telling you, I don't
care what kind of statements Mark Walter tosses out there.
It doesn't matter. These guys will say anything actions. He
didn't say he was gonna sell the Lakers. He just
(12:49):
sold the Lakers. So you can't believe it.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
These guys are all weasels. You can't believe them.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
And it certainly is looking like the Dodgers are headed
that direction as buys the Lakers. But Mark Walter is
under federal investigation, federal scrutiny for his business.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Dealings with the Guggenheim Group.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
It's a mess. He is facing an FBI probe. The
Feds are sniffing around Bob Iger, all right. And there's
a parallel SEC not the Southeastern Conference SEC investigation involving loans,
financial disclosures connected to companies that he's in charge of. Now,
(13:31):
these are not blue collar crimes, they're white collar crimes.
So typically rich people just cut checks. So it's possible
that that's what's going on here, but this is there's
some meat to it, and I'll explain why. But the
question is, how does the future look for Mark Walter
as the Dodger owner. Well, it really comes down, ironically
(13:54):
to a whistle because the reason that Mark Walter is
in the crosshairs here is because of a whistle blower.
And that's almost always how these massive things are uncovered.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
The cheating eh Stros, you've guys.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Major League Baseball investigated those a holes because teams were saying, hey,
they're cheating, and that schmuck rob manfraud investigated the Astros
said we didn't see anything.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
They're fine, there's nothing to see here. It was only
after a.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Whistle blower on the team said hey, these guys are cheating.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Here's how they're doing it.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
And only after that, And if I bet you, if
he hadn't gone to the media, they would have covered
it up major League Baseball, or they would have tried
to cover it up.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
They already did with the soft cell.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
And so you've got a whistleblower who filed a complaint
against the Guggenheim Group concerning accounting irregularities.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Wow, yeah, so private credit investments and the stuff. The
reason this is so crazy is this is this stuff
that helped them acquire the rights to the Dodgers. So
the empire of Mark Walter is certainly cracking at this point.
It's now turning into a government grade escape room. And
(15:14):
the Feds already have they already have the cheat codes
pretty much. Man, you would think that the vultures are
circling overhead and how many how many robber barons are like, hey,
you sold the Lakers? How much is the Dodgers gonna cost?
Can we get to get a piece of that? And
so the vultures are out there, and you've got Uncle
Sam who's bird dogging, bird dogging Mark Walter, and this
(15:38):
whistleblower who's opened up Pandora's filing cabinet. And you know,
if the FBI is grabbing your phone and laptop, which
apparently when I read in the New York Post they've
done for Mark Walter, you're not in a little trouble,
Like that's more than a little trouble. You're in the
kind of trouble that comes with its own theme music
and documentaries about what happened that Like that kind of trouble,
(16:01):
so Walter, to be fair.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
He hasn't been charged with anything.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
It's just a lot of circumstantial evidence that does not
look good.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
It does not look good.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
But you got to say after the decision after nine
months to flip the Lakers like it was a house
or dishovel, the house that you bought and then you
fix it up, put a coat of paint on it
and resold it. Would anyone really be shocked if the
La Dodgers hit the auctioning block within the next year.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
I wouldn't be, not at all.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I mean, the Dodgers are suddenly the Mona Lisa at
a pawnshop.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
How'd the Mona Lisa end up at a pawnshop? I
don't know. I have no IDEA.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Priceless, fragile, and really one bad decision away from an
all out bidding war.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Can you imagine the bidding war. There would be.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
No shortage of aristocrats and the sovereign wealth elites, private.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Equity monarchs would be lining up.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Arriving in gold plated dinghies out in the Pacific, and
they'd be ready to turn Chavez Ravine into the most
expensive yard sale in baseball history. Now there's a lot
of businesses in Japan. I would think that would been
on the Dodgers. So it's possible Tony stays if a
Japanese company buys the team. Certainly in the realm of
(17:23):
possibility watch Dodger game. Most of the sponsors are from Japan,
so they love endorsing the Dodgers. So if the team
does get sold, I wouldn't be shocked if something like
that happens. All right, now, now the last word here
to the good bye note, and we'll mention this. I
want to spend at least a couple of minutes. Russell Westbrook,
someone who has been a big topic of conversation in
(17:44):
these parts over his career, really effective at creating content
for talk radio. Russell Westbrook has said bye bye. He
has retired from the NBA. I believe he's thirty seven.
I think announced his decision after he began as the
number four overall pick in the draft years ago, and
(18:06):
he did not go out with a dud. Westbrook revealing
his retirement through a very corny video on social media
narrated by actor Michael B.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Jordan.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
He was the narrator there, just announcing to the world, hey,
I'm a douche. Here's the video, all right, and wrote,
sometimes you don't even know when you're already watching the end,
or you've already watched the end, and now it is over.
Westbrook was in the NBA so long. He was drafted
by the Sonics the SuperSonics right before they transitioned to
(18:39):
Oklahoma City.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Back in eight so a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
And there you go his peak, a couple of scoring
titles in the NBA, won a questionable MVP award in
twenty seventeen, and was a top MVP candidate for most
of that four year stretch, a year after year.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
So the question where are you at on.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Russell Westbrook and his abrupt, seemingly abrupt decision to walk
away from the NBA after pretty much being retired last
year in Sacramento, Because nobody watches the Sacramento Kings, all right, So,
Russell Westbrook, if you look at this objectively, he did
not actually retire from the NBA.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
He was evicted from the NBA.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
His belongings were tossed out on the sidewalk, the locks
were changed. They don't know where the forwarding address is,
probably somewhere in Beverly Hills.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
He couldn't find a job.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Does anyone just be like he tried, Like there were
talks with a bunch of teams. He couldn't find a gig.
And so the jig is up for Russell Westbrook in
the NBA. And he had just run out of zip codes.
He'd run out of zip codes. And last we heard,
we talked about this in a previous episode of the show,
that Westbrook was supposedly talking to a team in Israel
(19:52):
because he couldn't find a job in the NBA, and
then that fizzled. I guess going to the Middle East
and playing basketball didn't seem like a great idea when
you got that kind of dough and you know something
could go wrong right there. So how are we gonna
remember Russell Westbrook?
Speaker 1 (20:09):
This is it? You think he's actually retired. So if
he is retired and this.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Is it, I will remember him as the ultimate walking,
talking contradiction. A man who was built like a Donnis,
just chiseled out of granite, Russell Westbrook, and yet somehow
ended up emotionally covered in salamander's skin. It was always
allergy season with Russell Westbrook.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Now what do I mean by that?
Speaker 2 (20:36):
There are few stars in my time. I've been doing
this a long time. There are few stars in my
time doing talk radio that in that business in the
NBA that had been more allergic.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
To criticism and just couldn't handle it.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Was so soft despite looking like they were built out
of steel than Russell Westbrook. It's fascinating you heckle him security.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Oh my god, it died. I need help, I need help.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
Somebody shouldn't be named by Russell Westbrook's.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
How many times he hit.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Fans kicked out in multiple areadas, rhythmically chanting west Brick,
Oh my god, human rights violation, Human rights violation.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
And he's always got a deck of playing cards Westbrook
in his back pocket and he pulls the victim card.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
From the bottom of the deck. Loved to play the victim.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
And then the other thing that I'm gonna remember, because
we talked a lot about it here on the radio show,
was the what I call the Triple Double industrial complex.
Back in his Oklahoma City days, those infamous OKC clips
of teammates rigging his statuet and he got away with it.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
They're still up on YouTube, like you can go check
them out if you want it. Was wild. Teammates were
hopping away from.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Rebounds like they were trying to get away from a
live hand grenade to allow Westbrook to sneak in and
cherry pick rebounds to get the triple double numbers. So
Russ could vacuum up the stats and fatten up the spreadsheet.
And once you it's like we said, once you've seen
how they make the Johnsonville sausage, well you can't unsee it.
(22:19):
You know, you can still eat the Johnsonville sausage, but
you can't unsee what happened there. And a spectacular athlete Westbrook, Absolutely,
he'll be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Hel Muffett
McGraw is in the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame there.
But the mythology, all right, the mythology surrounding those triple doubles, wow,
(22:41):
it is next level. You have more artificial ingredients in
those triple double stats than if you were to go
to a gas station and order a twinkie. Yeah, it's
just totally for gayzy, is what it is. Well that
it is the Ben Malor Show. If you would like
(23:03):
to be part of this and walk they talk, or
talk the walk, or just hang out with fellow night owls.
You can interact as long as you're not going bonkers
and say hello at eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
So those are often the most most exciting calls. I
got a lot of good reaction feedback from the people
(23:23):
that annoy me on the email from hollering James phone
call yesterday when I went to my Viking Insider and
he proceeded to ask nothing but questions about the Minnesota Twins,
I thought that it was just I was at a
loss for words. I didn't know what to do, and
there was anyway if you want to be part eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Seven seven nine nine six six three six nine.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Now I have saved for the B block my favorite
story involving the Lakers all right now the teams being
sold times have changed the Lakers to get passed around.
There is something that is so maddening to the Laker historians.
They have no rebuttal, they have no comeback. They're completely devastated.
(24:09):
And it made me smile to cheshire Cat's smile when
I saw us.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Know what is it?
Speaker 2 (24:14):
It's hilarious, it's great, and you're gonna find out about it.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
We'll get to it. We'll do it next.
Speaker 3 (24:20):

Speaker 1 (26:05):
That's a Saturday in Sin City.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Lost Wages, Nevada begin and we'll have a great time
looking forward to that. It gonna be a lot of
fun in Vegas. It'll be in the afternoon. We'll give
you more information. We'll get a little closer there.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
But we live. We're on the radio there in Vegas.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
And so if you're one of the locals or travel
to Vegas off and it's a kind of a suburb
of la it's a little past Riverside, just keep going
and you know eventually, well.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
You eventually get there. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Also on the on the phones eight seven seven ninety
nine on Fox. You want to be part of the
live show eight seven, seven nine nine, six sixty three
six nine, also on the X Machine, and that's at
Ben Malor. I'm not attracted to quiment, that's Ai. You
could hear the edit obviously erroneous and you can say
(26:56):
a loot to Loraina the FSR tech queen, right, do
not talk to me, and a Coop A Loop is
sitting in the chair off to the side. There you
can say hello to Coop at Bronco Fan.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Your ca.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
Can and will be used against you in the court
of sports radio, so please act accordingly. And I can
report that unfortunately I did not win the powerball jackpot,
so I did not get these billion dollars, so I
will be continuing the show I checked with. I have
(27:32):
a couple of relatives in Illinois. It appears that my
relatives either did not win the one billion dollar jackpot
on Wednesday night or they are not returning text messages.
So either way, that's that's it. So I don't know,
do you take the one billion prize paid out over
all those years, I guess.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Or the one time.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Four hundred and fifty million dollar cash payout before taxes oh,
the taxes are just gonna oh my god. So really
after TAXI, what is that like, it's still two hundred
million dollars? Right, two hundred and something million dollars Probably after.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Taxing, it is still more than I had. Well, this
is true, Lareenna.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
However, when you hear a billion dollars and then you
slice it down.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Down, down, down, down, down, down down down, it's like, well,
wait a minute, what is going on? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
But fortunately whoever did win will I'm sure, I'm sure
spend their money wisely. Maybe they'll end up on one
of those TV shows where you know, lottery winners go
buy houses, because that'll be that'll be great, that'll be fun.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Absolutely, Well we are on the X machine that's at
Ben mallor that's at Ben Mahlor and a lot of
a great reaction. Now, ferg Dog says, I don't think
Wes Brick is a Hall of Famer, but you pointed
out exactly why it's going to be very hard to
keep him out.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
It's total fraud.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Mup at McGraw can get and as she gets in,
anyone can get it. Yeah, Nature voices, I guess all
the Super Team Lakers are gone for good. At least
they still have their mid season tournament banner. That was
a tremendous accomplishment there for the Lakers. And remember the Knicks,
unlike the Lakers. The Knicks didn't put up their little
(29:21):
play in whatever that thing was banner, but the Lakers,
of course did, embarrassing the entire NBA. Just an absolute embarrassment.
What else do we have? Shane in Des Moines with
a non sequitur, he says, Ben, does anyone in the
Al West deserve to make the playoffs this year? Those
teams are doing their best version of the NFL's AFC South. Yeah, well,
(29:43):
or NFC South, any of those southern divisions in the
NFL usually garbage.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
Well, that's the way it's designed.
Speaker 2 (29:50):
And every once in a while a team that was
absolute dog food during the regular season ends up going
on a burner later on. So it is there's a
world where that happens. There's a world where that happens.
Milkman Mike in Colorado rights and says intriguing opening Mallard
monologue to start off a stormy night here in Colorado.
(30:12):
It now seems the Lakers have been cursed much like
the defense against the dark arts. The owner is now
the only lasting that of the owner is only not
lasting one year. Easy for me to say, Rob writes
in from Parts Unknown, and Rob says, the Lakers got
(30:33):
the next bus duo and Iiger and Kushner to continue
their next dynasty.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Okay, so that's his troll account. That's obviously a troll account.
Nobody believes that.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
Come on now, Femi, the top uber eats driver in Minnesota,
says Ben Russell, Westbrook is still better than fifty percent
of players in the NBA. By the way, are you
saying my favorite twinkies are not natural?
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Damn well? I used to say back.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
In my my big eating days for me that anything
that is made is made with stuff found on the planet,
so it's all from Earth. I mean, chemicals are technically
from Earth, right, they might be natural.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Well they're natural. Well, you know they're natural. What is natural?
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Right?
Speaker 1 (31:14):
And maybe they're in a lab. They were naturally made
in a lab.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Some of the greatest foods are genetically modified.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
We love them. We can't get enough of them.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
There's natural too, right, everything, yes, exactly, all natural.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
You know, everything's perfectly good, it's all kosher. Why not
Gunner is out of jail.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Big news, Big news, Gunner has been furloughed. Our friend
Gunner spent the last several months locked up there and
he is out. Congratulations Gunner on your furlough. He says,
it's been been a while eight plus. On the Malee monologue,
he says, just got back seventeen days away. He had
(31:55):
set seventeen. I've not had seventeen days off since I
got whacked my last time in radio, and I had
six months and twenty six days off, but that was
seventeen years ago, so it's been a while since I've.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Had that time.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Fat Daddy writes in from southern California. He says, great monologue,
big men. Can anybody say Bruce McNall, Oh, yeah, that guy.
Everyone loved Bruce McNall too. I remember hearing stories, legendary
stories about when Bruce McNall, who owned the La Kings.
He was a rich guy, but kind of a little
(32:26):
little shady, and he got caught up in those white
collar crimes and he went to jail. And I remember
hearing stories about the legendary softball games where all the
celebrity friends of Bruce McNall, not all of them, but
a lot of them would travel up he was at
a jail. If I remember the late great Stu Nahan,
LA sportscaster Silver Tipstu told me that Bruce McNall, they
(32:49):
go up to this jail outside Santa Barbara, and all
of the rich people would go watch Bruce McNall play softball.
Speaker 1 (32:57):
I guess they had. On the weekends. You could I
don't know how that would work.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
You can just invite friends and family to watch a
softball game at a jail.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
I guess you could do that back then.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
I don't know, but that's a pretty solid example. Who
knows this could be Just cut a check and then
you're good. Now, Matthew points out, and this guy knows
a thing or two about these kind of issues. And
Matthew says, you actually have to remember the taxes. He
is actually losing money.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
From when he bought it nine months ago. That's right.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
The capital gains tax. And I didn't even know what
that was till my parents died. Then I learned what
the capital gains tax was. Holy crap. Yeah, the death
tax also. Man, they got you, man, they got you
by the by the coffin when your loved ones check
out if they left any money behind, Uncle Sam's gonna
get all that money or most of it. Man a
(33:47):
dog from South Korea writes in. He says, the new
ownership the Lakers have will finally have an official mascot of.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
The likes of Goofy. There you go, all right.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Truck Stop Fungus writes in from a truck stop somewhere
in the southern US, and.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
He is sitting in the back.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
He has a cowboy hat on, he is wearing tidy
whities and eating a bowl of lukewarm chili, and truck
stop Funkus says, I can't get enough of those Lakers
from malor here we go again.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
Well, what am I supposed to do? What am I
supposed to do?
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Seriously, It's the biggest story in sports, and I'm supposed
to ignore it.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Put blinders on? Is that right?
Speaker 2 (34:32):
I about new Spocks? Weed from the Oregon Trail rights in.
He says, speaking of left field, that's the only position
on a baseball team, of on a baseball team of economics,
if you know, you know, all right, very very nice,
very very nice, Drew writes in. He says, Ben, there
(34:55):
is a five percent kicker per year on the jackpot,
take the annuity payments, it's over three billion when it's
all said and done.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Is that right, Drew? You sound like you know what
you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
I mean, I don't know you just you don't even
have an avatar on X, But it sounds like you
might be onto something, like you've studied that. I hope
to be in a position to make that decision. That
would be a really cool thing. If I was in
a position to have that, that would be great. Ruth
writes in she wants to know how many zeros are
there in one billion? And the answer, Ruth, is a lot.
(35:28):
The answer is a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot. Well,
my favorite story I gotta get to this is so
this is so delicious, This is so wonderful, this story.
I must get to this story. So I was smiling
all day. This is like a really dark day for
the Laker franchise. And you know, i'd being a longtime
Laker hater, I'm enjoying it, I admit that. And did
(35:51):
you hear the news about Bob Iger? Did you see
the news about Bob Iger and his history with the Lakers. Yeah,
so the Internet investigators, the Scooby Doo gang on the
Internet went back and investigated, and a couple of years ago,
Bob Iger did a podcast interview. It was on video,
(36:15):
and the man who now owns the Lakers explained that
he could not root for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
He said, it's not in my dna. He said, he
grew up in New York.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
He was a Knicks fan, and then he became a
fan of a different team when he moved to Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
That's right, Bob Iger.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
The man that now is going to own the Los
Angeles Lakers is hip to clip.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
The Clipper fan, but the Lakers. Oh my god, this
is the greatest thing ever. This is so great, This
is amazing. A Clipper fan bought the Lakers, you losers?
Oh my god, how great is that? Is that not
(37:16):
the greatest? Is that not the Is that not a
chef's kiss? Bob Iger is about to become an owner
of the l A Lakers, And he said, growing up
he was a Knicks fan. He moved to LA because
of the Disney stuff, and then became a Laker fan,
or a Clipper fan rather.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
But now he's buying the Laker. Oh my god, Oh
that is so great. Oh my god, that is amazing.
That is the greatest thing. Is that not great? Oh
my god, that's great. I'm Benny Brightside on that one.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Baby. Wow.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
All right, we'll move on from that. Time now for
the you know, I'll calm down. That was orgasmik though.
Time now for the who am I?
Speaker 1 (37:58):
Game? And this is where we pretend to be somebody
else to here. It is the who am I? Game?
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Arizona's Corbyn Carrol became the third MLB player to reach
one hundred or more home runs and fifty or more
triples before their six hundred and tenth career game. I
know this is one of those random made up stats,
but just go with is. This guy plays with the Diamondbacks.
They're not a glamour team, so you probably don't.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
Know who that is.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
But Corbyn Carroll for Arizona is the third MLB player
to reach one hundred or more home runs and fifty
or more triples before their six hundred and tenth career game,
joining Lou Garrick. I've heard of him and me. Who
am I? That's the question. The answer, we'll get to it.
We'll do it next.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Maller

Audio content not available on terrestrial radio.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
It's only available in the podcast format. And you all say,
you all say.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
Well, those podcasters are cool people. I don't think they're
that cool. But I do a podcast on the weekend.
So check out the fifth Hour podcast. The Audio Sweatshop
does not stop to talk, continues eight days a week because.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
It depends how you look at it.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
But there's two podcasts on I guess technically Friday there's
two podcasts, but sometimes people say Sunday there's two podcasts,
but you decide fifth Hour podcast.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
Check eat it out. It's available everywhere.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
All right back to it time now for the payoff
on the who am I game? Swear we pretend to
be somebody else that's called it the who am I?
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Game?
Speaker 2 (39:46):
So Arizona's Corbin Carrol. Apparently that's a baseball player Who's
I guess pretty good? I remember Arizona had that run
a couple of years ago. They went pretty far and
then choked in the end, but Corbyn Carrol became I'm
the third MLB player to reach one hundred plus home
runs fifty plus triples before the six hundred and tenth
(40:08):
career game. I know it's an arbitrary number, but to
just play with it, joining Louke Garrick and me, Who
am I?
Speaker 1 (40:15):
That is the question? What's the answer?
Speaker 2 (40:17):
The Ostrich Aunt in DC going with Cookie Crisp as
his answer.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Let's see here.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Clipper superfan Bob Iger is the answer. Nature Boy says,
I'm so glad I stayed up late to hear you
cackle of joy. Oh that was such a great when
I saw that. Oh my god, Bob Iger, Clipper fan
Laker owner Alf the Alien o Plinter going with the
Great Otis Nixon skeletre is his answer. Joe Mauer guests
(40:45):
by Femi Twins legend. Who else from malapropk I says
it's Ostrich Aunt who is not celebrating a birthday today,
not at all.
Speaker 1 (40:53):
I'm sure he is not.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
We we don't do shout outs, so we can't wish
him a happy birthday. King Roy says, Gunner is the answer.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Who else do we have?
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Have?
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Wee Bay from just Josh, Carol O'Connor from Stevie Meatballs,
Roberto Clemente from analog al who else do we have?
Page NN overnight Joe. I can't read all that right now, Joe.
I'll read it in a minute.
Speaker 1 (41:18):
Robbie's going with the Seattle Mariners. That's about right. Loraina,
do you have an answer? I'm gonna go with Rogers Hornsby.
Oh that's actual a baseball player. That's shocking.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Somebody must have told you that the correct answer is
not Rogers Hornsby. It's a man whose name became a song, Cholton.
Joe Damaggio. Joe Damaggio.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
That's a pretty good company, right, that's not bad
