Home Runner. We stay up all night to give you
this Derby monologue. And what a finish it was. Oh
the drama. So what does Cardinals bopper Jordan Walker's performance
as he rallied back at the very end to win
the Home Run Derby? What does that do for his
(00:42):
career arc? We'll take a look at that. Also, does
this Home Run Derby financial windfall count as Jordan Walker
picking himself up by his bootstraps? And give me your
overall assessment of the Netflix maiden voyage as the broadcaster
of Home Run Derby, which included this very odd thing
(01:04):
with Will Ferrell and Michael Buffer. And there was a
lot going on. We'll talk about all of it. Get
you caught up right about now, settle in on this Tuesday.
It's our number one. A batting Pact, this thriller, a

(04:49):
from well the obvious story that the Delaware Valley the
return of the Spectacle of spectacles, Well kind of it
was derby time the flag us up. Yeah, were you watching? No,
you were not? You were not watching? Maybe not all right?
Well don't worry, we watched so you would not have to.
(05:11):
Now Jordan Walker, who this guy became a literal batman
super villain just like that, as talking about playing spoiler
in Philadelphia as he homered on his last not one,
not two, not three, not four, not five, his last
(05:32):
six swings in the home run derby to knock out
the hometown hero Kyle Schwarmer. Bye bye, You're out of here,
and silence the angry mob in Philadelphia. The Boo birds
were out. They were furious as the final round came
to an end, and Jordan Walker, I am told he
(05:56):
is an outfielder for the Saint Louis Cardinals, and he
is the first Saint Louis player to win the home
run derby. Take that, Mark McGuire and Albert Poolhos and
all those guys. Schwarber the major league leader in dingers
this year, and they were roaring and going crazy and
they were having a great time. It was like a
(06:17):
religious revival there. They were ringing the Liberty bell. Oh,
they were so happy, so happy in Philadelphia for this guy.
He was gonna win it. Every swing. Eleven schwar bombs.
He had eleven schwar bombs during the fifteen swing final
round there, and every time anyone came up that wasn't
(06:37):
either Kyle Schwarber or Bryce Harper who got exited in
the first round. He was decommissioned in the first round
of the Home run Derby. Everyone was booed other than
those guys, as you might imagine there and roaring cheers
for Schwarber as he was doing his thing there throughout
the night and it looked like he had it in
the back. What's in the bag? Oh, you cut a
(06:58):
hole in the bag. That's what happened. And then the
scene and we didn't see too much of it, bat
you up by Netflix, but they the scene of people
leaving with their heads down. Some of them had the
surrender cobra as they lost and their guy lost the
Home run Derby, exiting as that home run, the Walker
home run soaring into the night out in left field.
(07:21):
So that is a good jumping off point. Let us
discuss the question does Cardinals slugger Jordan Walker's performance in
the Home run Derby? What does it do? What does
this do for his career? That's the question. What does
this do for the career of Jordan Marker? So I've
got SpaceX edible arrangements and Buffalo wild wings and we
(07:44):
will combine all of these things together, and we are
going to make a tasty cake. Cause that's what Jordan
Walker deserves, a bunch of tasty cakes. And right there,
shove it down your throat. Yes, absolutely all right. So
a some players survived the Spotlight and this home run derby,
(08:06):
there's a lot of guys that choke in it. My
favorite story. Years ago, I was with the Dodgers. They
had got named Mike Piazza, who was an epic home
run hitter with the Dodgers. He became more of a
legend with the Mets. But Piazza was in the home
run derby and if I remember Corff, he didn't hit
one home run and it was very embarrassing, and he's
not long. There was a bunch of guys that have
not been good at that. That's not their skill set.
(08:28):
Jordan Walker and then the pressure and how guys melt
under that he absorbed it and that was impressive to
see here he strolled in like he owned the place,
and he kind of did. Jordan Walker kind of did
own the night. The spotlight was his and I'm not
a Cardinal fan, and I enjoyed it. It was enjoyable
(08:50):
to see this happen to see all those people. I
had some schottenfreud for the Philadelphia fan. Am I still
bitter about that home run years ago the Phillies hit
against the Dodgers a Dodger Stadium to beat them in
the NLCS? I might be, I might be where's Matt
Stares right now? You know he's getting free food somewhere
in Philly, a spaghetti meatball somewhere in Philadelphia. There he
was right if he didn't see it for the blind listeners.
(09:13):
So this guy had some some style to him. As
Walker was up there, Jordan Walker is his cap backwards.
That'll piss off Colin Cowhard and Ken Griffy Junior style.
If you remember Griffy, And if you're old, you know
that is Ken Griffith Junior. This guy, I think he's
twenty four. He is chewing gum the whole thing. Oh
(09:35):
he could choke if you get hit with the pitch,
you could choke on the gum. Oh my god. Yeah.
And he looked but dazzled. He looked but dazzled, seemed
completely unfazed. And I kind of get it from the
standpoint of if he lost, it would have been fine
because Kyle Schwarber is supposed to win the home run Derby,
so he was really playing with house money in many
(09:57):
respects there, Jordan Walker, he's the fifth youngest player to
win the home run Derby if you're into those kind
of age type things. And he acted like he was
ordering a Hogi from Jersey Mike's and just calm, cool
and ready to eat and willing to take somebody else's
food and just eat that and just knock it out
of the park there. And I did not cracked and
(10:19):
not panic, did not blink, all those things, all those
hokey things we say in sports. You could have literally
dropped Jordan Walker into Mount Fuji, the volcano, and he'd
still be chewing gum.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
And no no no no no no no no no
no no that I fear nothing that energy that he
at least it looked like that on the stream that
I had.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Maybe I had a different stream than you. It's a
marketing department's dream, and this was like a national coming
out party for Jordan Walker for those that care about
baseball and kind of like think about like SpaceX and
you have that rocket launch where everyone goes down to
take photos of the rocket launch, and in this case,
the rocket launch was his Q rating massive. So if
(11:07):
you're completely honest about this, he has been having a
monster year in Saint Louis under the arches there. He's
on paced at thirty eight home runs and driving one
hundred and twenty six runs this season. Yet, if you
are honest about this, anyone outside of the Cardinal fandom
in Missouri and the states around Missouri there has not
(11:29):
really cared about the Cardinals in what a decade or so,
It's been about a decade since the Cardinals were any good.
It seems like it maybe a little less than that.
I don't know, it just seems like it's been that long.
And if the playoffs started to day the Cardinals, it
is true they have a winning record, they would not
qualify for the playoffs. The National League is loaded this year.
And so Walker out there showing some poise, polish, he
(11:52):
had some personality to him. The holy trinity in modern
Internet age, social media age sports, right, that poise, polish,
and personality, the three piece, and he had all three
of them. And so that's that's where we are. And listen,
this is the kind of stuff that moves the needle.
And the joke is, if he keeps playing like that,
(12:13):
he's got a couple more years of arbitration. Eventually he'll
end up playing for the Dodgers of the Yankees. If
this guy keeps playing the way he's playing right now,
Jordan Walker, now speaking of money, money, money, money, money, money,
it's all about turning the page here to the money
train tripe. So a number of baseball scribes, the baseball elites,
as we like to call them, the guys get free
(12:35):
loading trips to the All Star Game every year. So
these are dronis. They're very excited. Jordan Walker. I believe
he earned one million dollars one million dollars for winning
the twenty twenty six home run derby. The Cardinals outfielder
his twenty twenty six salary before taxes seven hundred and
(12:56):
ninety nine thousand, four hundred dollars. Using some back of
the napkin mal or math, that Jordan Walker his home
run Derby check exceeded his entire salary for the season.
And this is supposed to be a big deal. This
is supposed to be a big deal. So the question
(13:16):
does this home run derby financial windfall for Jordan Walker.
All right, does this count he picking up? Is this
a pick yourself up by the bootstrap situation for Jordan Walker?
So I do get a chuckle out of these type
of stories. And these are things that used to exist
(13:38):
in a different time in the world when we didn't
put our athletes on pedestals like this, and the fact
that this is still the thing fascinates me. It really does. Oh,
poor Jordan Walker. Only seven hundred and ninety nine thousand
a year in salary. How does the man survive? He's
got to buy generic brand bottled water. Holy crap, how
(14:01):
does he live? So sad? So I'm sorry, I don't
get the vibe that Walker was somehow lifting himself out
of baseball poverty winning the home run derby. I don't
the way I look at it, he was already living
in a gated community of Major League Baseball comfort the
home run derby. Now listen, it handed him a bonus
(14:24):
check big enough to make his financial advisors send an
edible arrangement. They're very happy, very happy to see all
that it's not some chicken soup for the sole type
redemption arc that these baseball pundits are trying to make
it to be the kid from the wrong side of
the tracks who finally escaped that neighborhood. Now he's making
(14:49):
the big money. It's just not the case. Jordan Walker
has already banked five point three million dollars in careers salary.
Now after taxes, that's about three hundred thousand still though,
you know, he's made a good amount of money in
career earnings. Around here where I am in this world,
that's high society. That's straight up high society for Jordan Walker.
(15:12):
So heartwarming tale of grinding it out. Spare me. The
narrative doesn't work anymore. And you still get these media
dopes who all went to sports writing clown college and
they all do it. They're like they make it seem
like this is some amazing, over the top story when
(15:36):
everyone's doing pretty well, when the minimum salary is where
it is in professional baseball, no one's doing bad. It's
like a tech bro saying, oh, man, I really bootstrapped
it my startup. I only I was only able to
raise a five million in venture capital. That's it. You
know my dad paid most of that. Well, that's a
real success story. That's that's great. So let's stop acting
(16:00):
like Jordan Walker was living paycheck to paycheck. He wasn't broke.
He was MLB broke, which means a third home does
not have the tennis court. Now he can afford a
tennis court in a third home. He's got so. In baseball,
the word broke still means that most Americans would would
(16:21):
love to trade the financial situation therein with the supposedly
poorly paid baseball player. All right, now, last word to
the stream, to the streams of the streams of the stream.
Did you watch this? Are you one of the people
that don't have Netflix? Were you upset? Were you angry?
You couldn't find the home run Derby? This was the
first broadcast of the Derby on a internet stream, not
(16:45):
on conventional television, and Netflix went all in. They chose
this as an opportunity to promote other Netflix shows. As
you might imagine if you saw any of this, it
was all about the Hawk, not Andre Dawson. No, no, no,
if you're all you know who that is, or the
Atlanta Hawks for that matter. Instead, this was all about
(17:06):
a Netflix golf comedy series starring Will Ferrell. Fun fact,
I went to the same high school as Will Ferrell.
He was a little older than me, but we went
to the same high school. He was a punter on
the football team. And he actually had some records at
the punting Records when I was in school, and I said,
at the time, he was on Saturday Night Live. I thought, okay,
well fine, kind of became a big deal after that. Anyway,
(17:28):
Will Ferrell plays a character known as Lonnie the Hawk
Hawkins and it's going to premiere in a couple of
days here on Netflix. And so they brought these guys out.
They had Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, Jimmy Chatrow is that
his name? Bee? That's his name? And they all saturd
at a desk and they offered random commentary as the
(17:51):
Home Run Derby was being introduced at Citizens Bank Park.
It made for very awkward television and for much of
the time the boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer, who of
course they brought out Michael Buffer. More on that in
a minute. He was trying to introduce the players, and
it was just a cluster, if you know what I mean.
(18:14):
So the question give me your overall assessment of Netflix's
maiden voyage as the home of the Home Run Derby.
So think of this like cologne forget Calvin Klein or
old spice. Netflix Home Run Derby smelled like a clearance
(18:37):
rack body spray called desperation with the capital of the
It just did trying a little bit too hard, Just
a little bit too hard. You could see the flops
with sweat on the faces of the Netflix executives from
outer space. On this one. They turned batting practice with
millionaires into some weird comic con type thing. Now, it's
(19:01):
not surprising because Netflix did the same thing on opening
day the Yankees and Giants in San Francisco. It was
a very similar vibe there. They sacrificed the sport for
the info mercial. At least I didn't see Jamis Winston.
Maybe I missed him. He might have been there. I
didn't see him. Could have been there half the time.
I want to stress this now, Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson,
that other guy. They sounded like three guys sharing one
(19:24):
microphone because the engineer was drunk at a Buffalo wild
wings a lot of ambient noise in the background. So
Michael Buffer he showed up again. Is there a rule?
Does Michael Buffer have all of these people mesmerized in
sports executive World. It's wild. Apparently Netflix they bought the
(19:47):
insert Buffer here button and they wanted to get their
money's worth on that. So here's Michael. But good for him.
He makes a killing every time he goes to do
one of these things. First class travel, vip A hotel
and a ridonculous amount of money for Michael Buffer. What
a cottage industry of absolutely ripping off dumb people who
sign up for this. It's wild. Anyway, the whole thing
(20:11):
was I thought the booth was chaos. I wrote some
notes down on my app, my notes app on my
phone as I was watching this. I thought FSR alumni,
Matt vas Kersion, he actually worked here years ago in
the early days of Fox Sports Rade. I thought Matt
Vesqukerson was like the only adult in the room. It
felt like when he was talking, it was like recess.
(20:31):
Barry Bonds and Albert Poolos should never be on television again. Horrific.
It's like sitting and waiting to be called for a
jury listening to these two guys talk. And even worse
than that, that woke Netflix lady Ellie Duncan I think
is her name there? Holy crap, I don't know how'd
she get that? Good for her? How'd she get that job? Wow?
(20:52):
I'm sure she's a lovely lady and my apology store,
but my god, holy crap. She is a reminder why
the remote control has a mute button, Ellie Duncan. Why
do we have a remote control because of people like her?
That would be why she called Bonds the undisputed Home
Run King, which I thought was adorable. I guess that
(21:15):
whole steroid ere that I lived through was just a
national fever dream, That's all it was. Then you add
in the ex JOCKX. You had Anthony Rizzo, who I
thought was pretty good on some of the NBC stuff
that he's done, and Hunter Pence, and they were terrible
on the Home Run Derby. They kept bouncing between. It's
so hard when somebody failed, and fans just don't understand you.
(21:41):
Fans just don't understand with Rizzo giving X teammate Kyle
Schwarber the Haktuah treatment when it looked like he was
gonna win the Home Run Derby, like schwarbaumb a tremendous humanitarian,
the love child, the mother Teresa and the Dali Lama
the way were talking about Kyle swber, essentially the talking down,
(22:04):
talking down to the viewer, like you and I are
just a bunch of country bumpkins and we've never seen
a baseball game or a home run derby before. That's
the vibe they gave on the derby. All right, your thoughts?
Those are my thoughts? What are your thoughts? Eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven nine nine
six six three six'. Nine if you'd like to be
(22:27):
part talk some Derby as we head into The All Star,
game which will be coming up On tuesday night On,
fox you better. Watch. Now there's a lot of complaints
that have gone on about the home run. Derby the
single dumbest complaint which is so ridiculous it must have
been generated BY. Ai it's so. Stupid what is? It
(22:49):
what is the dumbest complaint that people have about this
home run? Derby we will get to that and we
will do it.

rant for a minute about the WHAT i think is
one of the dumbest things That i've, seen AND i
love to complain about dumb things THAT i. See so
the dumbest complain about the home Run derby no. LIST
(30:28):
i Ripped. NETFLIX i didn't think the broadcast was very,
good and you, know Just, jockocracy bad, quality not very.
Entertaining the home On derby was wonderful, though like The
Jordan walker coming back and shoving it down the throat
of all Those philadelphia fans was hilarious to. Me it's.
GREAT i had no skin in the. GAME i didn't
bet on or anything like. THAT a number of online
(30:51):
complaints were raged Against Major League, baseball and you, KNOW
i do not want to Defend rob. Manfraud my position
is not to Defend Rob. Manford, however the narrative was
That Major League baseball was screwing fans because they put
the home Run derby exclusively On netflix and it had
been ON. ESPN i believe my entire, LIFE i think
the first home Run derby wasn't even broadcast ON. Tv
(31:14):
it's like a, trial weird thing they. DID i think
it was at The metrodome In minnesota IF i remember.
Correctly but, anyway over the, years it's obviously involved and
for a while it became a bigger, thing which seemed
like more people watch the home Run derby than The
All Star game and all. That so it's On netflix
now it's not ON. Espn and the complaints were, like
what about The babushkas who can't watch because they don't Have?
(31:36):
Netflix are the kids who don't Have? Netflix And i'm
thinking to, myself, wait AM i in a bizarro? World because,
like don't you have to pay FOR? Espn it's on.
Cable it's not. Free it's never been, free never Been
free's never been. Free and if you want to get,
Technical netflix has a much bigger, audience not even close
(32:00):
compared TO. Espn netflix is a global. Player there there's
people In bangladesh that could watch the home Run Derby,
Okay i'll see about Getting bunny ears the other. Day
help me get the the local. LOCAL i might know
a GUY. TV i might know a Guy. Loreen you,
