Speaker 1 (00:00):
You can put it on the board. Yeah, it's our
numb berd.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Two and a boom shacka laca to you and our
number two of the Ben Mahler Show. What did you
take away from Alex Cora's chat with the media about
his MLB managerial future. The former Red Sox manager living
the life of Riley right now as he sits out
the rest of the year, is whacked by the Red

(00:27):
Sox who certainly don't miss him. And are the hal
Steinbrenner Yankees modernizing, compromising or selling their soul with a
private equity deal in the Boogie doown Bronx. And also
what stands out about the lowly Angels whacking their pitching coach,
a well respected around baseball pitching coach, Mike Maddox because

(00:48):
he didn't embrace the nerds. He was whacked for not
embracing nerdom. Yeah, what a world. Also one of the
worst calls ever from Andrew in Baker's field this hour,
here we go.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
It's our number two.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
A changing of the socks or is there a changing
of the socks? Welcome in the beginning of another.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Hour of the Ben Mahlor Show. We are in the air.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Ev reware, cruising along, cruising along, and we have nothing,
nothing to be ashamed of. Coast to coast, border, the
border and beyond on the vast and blisteringly powerful microphones

(01:44):
of fs.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Are emminating live, do it live. We'll do it live.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Do it live from the ceiling, as we have a
high ceiling. Garanteed human from the world famous Fox Sports
radio studios, where Elloy from Compton and the ostriche and
from DC saying Hey, Malard, can you please help me out?

(02:09):
I said, what do you need? What do you need?
They said, we need a little Express in our life.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Well, okay, the number one burner account said we need
some Express. So if that's the case, we'll do it.
We'll make even Daryl wanted that if you work in logistics,
you know nothing moves without you.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Nothing.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Companies need skilled people now. Express Employment professionals can help
you find contract or full time work that fits at
no cost to you. VI is it expresspros dot com,
Get support, get options and get to work. What are
you waiting for? Well, someone that would like to get
to work currently unemployed. A lead story this hour from

(02:53):
the Speculation Room. From the Speculation Room, if you will,
and a former MLB skilled who was a big part
of the cheating as one thousand and two one thousand
holes would like back in the game. Making the headlines
here we saw this or not, perhaps not the smarmie

(03:13):
Alex Cora. The only person that loves Alex Cora more
than Alice Cora is Alex Cora. So Alice Corr says
he expects to manage again eventually. I'm sure he had
no timetable, though he did a round of some interviews
this week, did not mention exactly when he'll return to
the dugout. He did confirm that after the Red Sox

(03:37):
whacked him back in April, he turned down an offered
to manage the Philadelphia Phillies, said now to Dave don Browski,
and they hired Don Mattingly as the interim manager.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
So that happened.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
His explanation, he played the family card from the bottom
of the deck. Yeah, from the bottom of the deck,
just like that. Now, The thing I love about this,
these guys that always play the family card are so
full the crap.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Years ago, when I covered basketball all the time, Danny Ainge,
he used to play for the Celtics, so Danny Ainge
was with the Phoenix Suns, and if I remember correctly,
there was an incident with a towel, like it was
like Robert ri or somebody slapped him with a towel.
He lost his job and he said, I want to

(04:27):
spend more time with my family. And like a week later,
it seemed like it was a week later. He was
sitting next to me at what used to be called
Staples Center and we were not paying attention to the game.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
We were watching.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
There was this DC Snipers story that was going on
and we were watching that. I remember what we were
watching because it was like we was captivating. It was like,
oh my god, it's terrible and uh.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
And then he then moved his family to Boston. Now
he's moved.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
You know, it's back with the Jazz. I guess been
there for a few years. But these guys, that's ah
for the family.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Now.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
You know, many people, it's going to shock you are
able to have a family and have a job. It's wild.
It is so freaking crazy. But there's Alice Cora playing
the family card from the bottom of the deck.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Said I needed my family.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I guess nobody else needs their family. Most families want
their people to work anyway. He said, priorities are priorities?
Oh please, all right? Anyway, That's that's where that was.
Corey did say that his family, his kids want him
to manage. Again. I thought they wanted him to be around.

(05:31):
They don't want the sons, don't want Alice Cora pestering
them all the time. Why would that be, I don't understand.
And he said his kids already have a preferred team.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Right, So that is a
good jumping off point. Let us discuss the question what
did you take away from Alex Cora's chat with the

(05:51):
media about his MLB manager of future, the former Red
Sox manager. So my observations on this, I've got raw oysters,
chop shop, and Paris baguette, and we will combine all
of these things together and we are going to howl
at the moon.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Is what we're going to do now. Number one, what
al I'm done with that.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Alice Cora is going to handpick his next managerial job,
or at least that is what Alice Cora would like
you to believe.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
He's gonna pick it. That's it.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
He's right now living the Marco polo lifestyle. Alice Cora
is living the Marco polo lifestyle, embracing his sabbatical, enjoying
the life of Riley, waiting for some desperate, horny owner
to call him up and say, Hey, how would you

(06:59):
like to have all this gold boyon and manage my team?
He was a key to the clubhouse. Knock yourself out.
But Alice Cora is not some managerial faberja egg.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
He's not.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
He's more like raw oysters. He's an acquired taste Alex Cora.
That's just the way it is. And he's got a
supersized ego, which is amazing because I was around the
Dodgers when he played for them, and he wasn't very
good as a player. I was able to pull out
recording to what I read and on the internet to
very good at cheating with the a holes back in

(07:38):
the day, but nonetheless listened acquired taste, massive ego, the
whole thing, A lot of baggage, a lot of baggage,
and the snuffle offgus in the room. All of that
aura of Alx Cora took a hit when the Red
Sox turned on the after burners after he was excommunicated

(07:59):
from boss in baseball. Now, I realize they've lost four
in a row now and the sky is falling around
Finway and.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
All that for the Red Socks.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
However, you look around, despite all that, you figure that
the Mets are going to have a new manager the Phillies.
If they don't do a lot in the playoff. Don
Mattingley's ass is grass, he'll be out. So those teams
could come sniffing around Don Browski if he keeps his job.
He's at loggerheads with Bryce Harper. Don Browski will certainly
give Cora a call if Don Mattingley doesn't work out

(08:27):
in the Angels. Who wouldn't want to manage the Angels?
Come on more on them in a minute. That job
is seemingly open. Every fifteen minutes, you give us fifteen minutes,
we'll give you a new manager. And whoever face plants
in October. Now, this is old school, right, This is
old school, maybe even the Yankees. Back in the old

(08:47):
days before the Nerds took over baseball. You didn't achieve
success in the playoffs, you lost your job. Nowadays, keep
these guys around. They're just middles and they don't really
do much, and they just give quotes to the media,
and the media suck them up and just love them.

(09:08):
So that's where we are, right, I mean, Korra, he
does not hold all the cards, is what I'm trying
to say. I'm reading the tea leaves here. He does
not hold all the cards. As a distant relative of
Nostradamus and occasional friend of Nostradinas, he does not. Alice
Corra is selling himself as the prettiest, hottest girl at

(09:31):
the dance, like, like just amazing beauty, God given genetic beauty,
right that olding. The evidence, though, suggests that Boston's clubhouse
and the quality of life improved after he vacated the.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Building, So don't you're not supposed to say that part.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Don't give me it's a guarantee that als Kora is
right back, and he can also do TV. And there's
plenty TV jobs at NBC and the other networks that
he can go get if he's so inclined. So it's
an awkward sales pitch. It's an awkward sales pitch considering
how the Red Sox have turned things around after he left. Now, meanwhile,
to the Boogie Down, Bronx. We go where the Yankees

(10:18):
ending up in the Wall Street Journal? What did they
do to end up in the Wall Street Journal? Well,
the New York Yankees. If you didn't see this, perhaps not.
The Yankees have reached a two point six billion dollar
two point six billion dollar financial agreement with a private
equity firm. Whow yeah, Apollo Sports Capital is the name

(10:43):
of the outfit, and they are very happy to announce
that this will strengthen the franchise's financial portfolio.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
They will be better off.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Despite the ginormous financial package two point six billion dollar.
We are told that the Steinbrenner family, the ones that
didn't earn the wealth but were born into the genetic
lottery and won it. The Steinbrenner family will retain full
control of ownership authority. Uh and all of that, all

(11:17):
of that, you know, they'll still make the final call.
The buck stops with them, and so they claim this
will just be for uh, flexible financial flexibility, that's what
they're they're they're claiming here and that Apollo will not
take over the team. They just have a seat at
the table. Can you imagine spending two point six billion
dollars and not having say, what is that the financing

(11:41):
will be used to? They say, in part to refinance
the existing debt the existing debt and give the organization some,
as we said, flexibility, blah blah blah, more opportunities. All right,
So here's the question. Are the hal Steinbrenner Yankees modernizing?
Are the house Steinbrenner Yankees modernizing, compromising or selling their

(12:05):
soul with this particular deal? So I got no skin
of the get is this is a dark day in
Yankee history.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
It just is.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
It's just wrong on so many levels. And there's a
lot of stupid people that won't understand this, and they'll
think everything's fine, You're making a big deal about nothing.
I will push back on that because I actually have
lived my life. I've seen what has happened with private equity.
I know how these things go, and there are exceptions.
There's certainly exceptions where it doesn't work all the time
in the negative. However, more times than not, it's a

(12:39):
bad thing. The Steinbrenner kids have taken this family heirloom
and they have driven it straight straight to the private
equity pawn shop. Where are the pond stars when you
need him? Now?

Speaker 1 (12:52):
One of the most famous quotes from George Steinberning. He
might not know who that is.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
George Steinbrenner was a desk spot owner of the Yankees
Bigger than Life, back when it was a mom and
pop operation, back in the olden days of Yankee baseball.
Forty plus years he almost fifty years ago, George Sneiinberner
took over the Yankees. And one of his famous quotes
because he was asked, you're gonna ever sell the Yankees?
And he said, owning the Yankees this is quote quote,

(13:17):
owning the Yankees is like owning the Mona Lisa. You
don't sell it close. Quote that was from George Steinbrenner.
And well, hal Steinbrenner, the kid, while he hasn't technically
sold the Mona Lisa like the he's still going to
troll the Yankees. All the kid has done is invited

(13:38):
a bunch of Wall Street dopes to come in to
the louve and they've got calculators in one hand, they've
got both cutters in the other, and there's a U
haul waiting outside. That's what this is. Private equity. We've
seen it time and again with how many great restaurants
that we've enjoyed over the many years, have gone on

(14:00):
out of business or come close to bankruptcy because of
private equity. Right, And so private equity comes in, and
it's the chop shop. It's the chop shop of modern society.
They pour billions of dollars in. I'll tell you what
the hustle is. They pour billions of dollars in to
things that people love and feel like they need, and

(14:23):
then they squeeze every single nickel out of them.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
They strip the copper, they strip the copper wiring, they
sell the tires, They leave the rotting carcass on cinder blocks,
is what they do. Timing again, And so how Steinbrenner
can stand there and proclaim.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Don't worry nothing to see him. The Steinbrenners have full control. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yeah, And the guy swimming with an octopus is technically
in control until the ten nic start wrapping around his
ankles and then his neck and choke him to death.
But until then fine. Anyway, maybe this arrangement works beautifully,
and that's great. History though, says that when private equity

(15:14):
shows up and is carrying two point six billion in
the suitcase, two point six billion, it's not there because
they loved Yankee baseball and they grew up listening to
John Sterling and their parents love Phil Rizzuto.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
That's not it. That's not it at all.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
So that's just the way George treated the Yankees like
a priceless, priceless violin, strativarius violin, just priceless, right, And
the kids took that priceless stratavarius violin and took that
down and sold it to a hedge fund group, and

(15:55):
then they turned that into.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Lumber. Would for the fire, the campfire, burn, baby burn, burn,
baby burn.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Meanwhile, Tanaheim, the Angels, bad at baseball, good at making headlines.
The Halos did the thing you can't do at the time.
You can't do it for reasons beyond belief. The Angels,
who are long buried, one of the worst teams in baseball,
and they decided randomly in mid August to fire pitching
coach Mike Maddox. That normally a pitching coach being fired

(16:26):
does not rise to the level of a Mallard monologue. However,
this is the exception to the rule. So not only
was Mike Maddox poll axed, his assistant pitching coach I mean,
I'm older. They used to have one pitching coach. Now
they have the assistant pitching coach. They have the bullpen
pitching coach. So they made sweeping changes to the pitching staff,

(16:48):
the people who are in charge of the pitching staff
at the Big A. There's just over forty games to go,
just over forty games to go. The numbers have been
just horrific. Angel pitchers had a four point five to
one earned run average, seventh worst in the big leagues,
and had issued an MLB high five hundred and eight

(17:10):
walks through Monday, five hundred and eight. You're just giving
base runners were just asking for I mean, you just
throw the ball down the middle, the way modern baseball's played,
where they don't try to hit for average, you're gonna
be fine. You'll at least be in the middle. You
just tore the ball right down the middle and say, hey,

(17:30):
hit it. These guys most.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Of them miss anyway. I digress.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
So the interim GM, the old Saint Louis Cardinal guy,
John moze Lock. He has come in here and he
made a bunch of trades, and now he has said
that the staff. Here's the money quote John Mosey lock.
The interim GM said the staff wasn't sufficiently sufficiently using
sufficiently using available technology to help pitchers, and they was

(17:57):
very critical of their coaching methods. All right, so question
what stands out about the Angels that sad sack Angels
team whacking their pitching coach Mike Maddox with just a
one and a half to go in the baseball regular season.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
So I will actually give the Halo's credit. Okay, I
am going I don't do it, mallor don't do it.
I'm gonna do it.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
These bozos continue to find new and creative ways to
embarrass themselves. It's fascinating who cooked this one up? Seriously,
you're scapegoating Mike Maddox. Do they not realize how respected
a pitching coach Mike Maddox is in the sport of baseball?
Do they not understand that he's in this generation, He's

(18:46):
been there for so long, he's been through multiple generations.
He's been of the all time great pitching coaches. And
he's the guy who helped the Texas Rangers win the
World Series a couple of years ago. He was the
pitching coach when they won the World Series. Did he
take some stupid pills. How about last year Mike Maddox
with the Rangers, you know who led baseball and earned

(19:07):
run average last year the Texas Rangers, who was their
pitching coach, ding Ding Ding ding Ding. Mike Maddos, you're
good at this game. You are good. You're good at
this game. So the Angels that we know you had
a good resume, well, we're gonna get ready here because
you're not listening. So what does that tell us the

(19:27):
Angels who were seemingly lucky to get him, Mike Maddox,
that we praised the hire.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
We thought it was a great higher. So they hired
Mike Maddox.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
And I'm assuming some I don't know it's for sure,
but I'm going to assume some twenty four year old
named Braxton who just got the job six months ago
in the analytics department, decided to let John moze Looc,
the interim general manager, know that Maddox wasn't doing what
he wanted, wasn't worshiping enough at the Church of the Algorithm,

(20:00):
and so he had to be excommunicated from the Halos.
And what exactly was Maddix supposed to do? Exactly? Like
what was he supposed to do here. Seriously, I don't
understand you handed the guy a smoldering pile of turds
in a wheelbarrow. At least it was kind of put
them in a wheelbarrow. So Maddox is pushing this smoldering

(20:22):
pile of turds in the home depot wheelbarrow. And he said, well,
open up a restaurant. I said, okay, I don't put
up a restaurant. And he bought a franchise for Paris baguette.
He said, okay, I opened up a Paris bag get
and the Angel said, okay, good, that's good, and so
he opened that up. And then the Angels ownership Arty
Morino sounded shocked, shocked when nobody bought the metal muffins

(20:48):
that they were trying to sell. They made metal muffins
out of the smoldering pile of turds that was in
the wheelbarrow. And unfortunately for the Angels. I guess whoever
hired I know the interim GM didn't hire him. Whoever
hired didn't realize he's from the old country. He attempts.
He attempts to follow the kiss method, keep it simple, stupid,

(21:08):
The Kiss method throw strikes, change speeds, get outs. Oh
that's so you're such a boomer. My god, you imagine
that you're fired because you told your pitchers to throw strikes,
change speeds, and get outs.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
But you didn't tell them that.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
The analytics say that you should not throw a breaking
ball when it's a two to two count and you're
facing a left handed pitcher and it's seventy two degrees
with the wind blowing out of the north and forty
seven thousand fans in the stadium, not any less than that.
It's got to be forty seven thousand fans or more.

(21:45):
The analytics say that if you throw on the two
to two pitch a cutter, you're going to get an
out more times than not. Okay, thank you, go jump
off a building. Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (21:56):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Can can the algorithm I'm asking for a friend? Can
the algorithm throw ninety seven miles an hour with movement?
Can a spreadsheet locate a slider? Can you use AI
any of the AI, Gemini Rock Chat GPT? Can they
come out of the bullpen?

Speaker 1 (22:17):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (22:17):
So the Angels just whiffed yet again, forty something games
to go in the season, and you said we got
to get rid of this guy.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
What are you doing?

Speaker 2 (22:28):
The Angels they're the team that fired the mechanic because
the car that they gave the mechanic had no engine,
and the mechanics said, I can't fix the engine. There's
no engine. So that's where we are. It is the

Speaker 1 (33:54):
You when is Dog, WILLIS i Hear willis in the,
Background Willis.

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Dog So i'm very enthusiastic about being on the.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
Program.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Ben speaking of, Baseball willis AND i Feel Red sox
they're a legitimate threat to win The World. Series we
feel it needs to be a little bit more respect
on their. Name, Right these high value franchises on both,
coasts The yankees and The dodgers spending all this. Money,
okay The Boston Red, sox but if they won thirty

(34:26):
six thirty seven in the last forty, games something of
that their. NATURE i think that's the. Storyline it needs
to have a little bit of prominence To Red, sox not.

Speaker 5 (34:34):
Just to make it now.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
TIME i feel like this call should have been made
a week. AGO i feel like this is a PRE
i feel like you're if you're not watched the last four.
Games they lost four games in, roll The Red sox
are falling. Apart this is very odd for you to
make this take. Now this IS i feel like this
is a data, take and this take would have been
great four or five days, ago and NOW i don't
feel it has the same same, power the same razzle

(34:58):
dazzle as.

Speaker 1 (34:59):
He did for Taking.

Speaker 3 (35:01):
Ben but we can take a little three game four
games slide. Here when you've won eighty eighty five ninety
percent of the last. Game DID i say that they
should that they're going to win the. World All i'm
saying is this is the team that's right there in the,
hunt and they're not getting to.

Speaker 5 (35:15):
Respect they.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Deserve The yankees with their. Payroll obviously The dodgs at their,
payroll The Red sox can't be considered a small market.
TEAM i think The brewers deserve the most respect in
this conversation in terms of what they're doing within the
parameters of what they. Have, Also Tampa bay another franchise
that has to win on the. Margins As billy being taught,
us you don't, buy you don't buy, players you buy.
Wins i'll take the slide they're on right. Now but

(35:38):
in the grand scheme of things as we go Into,
SEPTEMBER i think The Red sox in The American League,
east which is going to decide who goes to The World.
SERIES i don't think there's much strength in The. CENTRAL
i don't think there's much strength in The. WEST i
think they can beat The. YANKEES i think they can
beat The Tampa Bay raids and land themselves in The World.
Series they need more respect in the. Conversation, Yes i'll
take their. Flide to lost a couple of. Games yere

(36:00):
and then Mister Alex court wanting to get back into, baseball,
okay wanting to have, it have his. Shot he had
his run In. Boston he brought a little bit of.
PROSPERITY i get, that but that's another thing that they've
had to deal. With they've switched, managers they brought in
all these young, players and they just keep. Picking, so,
yes You're i'm not coming off this. TAPE i will
see your point that they have lost a couple in a.

(36:22):
Row but over the arch of this, season the ups and,
DOWNS i see them trending in the right direction going
into the, playoffs chance to win The World. Series and,
listen we Got Alligator Arms murray where we. Started, Okay
Alligator Arms, MURRAY i think he's found his this is his. Moment,
okay we know That minnesota is already in the march

(36:42):
for art looking. Quickly, okay here's the. Point Alligator Arms
murray gets them through this. Season, also the call is
that got me was, Out lorena was, out people were
people were. Frustrated But lorenda's back now And Kyler murray
is gonna leave The vikings back into The. Lottes thanks
taking all, RIGHT.
