Speaker 1 (00:00):
On your mark, get set go, It's time to play ball.
It's our number three, our number three, and a happy
Monday to you. It is the eighth day of June.
Talking some baseball thumbs up or thumbs down on Padres
star Manny Machado, pushing back against the analytics. The Padres

(00:22):
have been bad, bad, bad bad over the last couple
of weeks, and Machado's had enough of the analytic infusion
in baseball. And also, how big a problem is Dansby
Swanson for the Cubbies has been benched, the Cubs not
playing particularly well right now, we'll talk about that, and
why would the Diamondbacks bother to add Max Kepler while

(00:48):
he's suspended for Peds. We'll discuss that puzzling roster move,
and much more. Right now here it is our number three.
The nerds, Enough, get out of here, Your nerds welcome.
In the beginning of another hour of the Ben Mahler Show.

(01:13):
We are in the air ev Reware co conspirators as
we do the Mango Tango coast the coast, border to
border and beyond on the vast and ginormously powerful microphones

(01:35):
of FSR, amminating good live from the ball as we
are behind these redded eight ball garanteed human from the
world famous Fox Sports Radio studios were Yaphim in Chicago.
Reminds us this hour made possible in part by our

friends at tire Rack. For over forty years, tire Rack

buying should be. And it was mediocre Kabuki who said, Ben,
can you let the people know about Express? I said,
you know what if mediocre Kobuki wants us to do that?
And I saw Supermarket Steve over in the corner of
the room. He was giving a nod, and then Mallard
prop g. I said, what about me, I'm giving a

(02:41):
nod also, And then it was like it was a
line of people lined up to give the nod. Femi
was in that. I said, yes, I will tired of

(03:05):
there you go, and we are back at it here
in this hour talking bays maall we'll get back to
the calls the nerd turd, if you will. That's the headline,
headline this hour, the nerd turd dateline san Diego. That's right,
great movie years ago, so old movie. Now Anchorman to

(03:28):
San Diego television back in the heyday of TV. So
over the weekend, Manny Machado. Push back, Push it back, now,
push it back, Manny Machado, against the analytic overload. As
the Padres are free fall in free fall in San Diego.

(03:49):
If you like the Padres, you'll say they're in a
rough patch. If you don't like the Padres, you'll say
they suck you being mean Maller two and eleven their
last thirteen games. The Padres to one fifty four winning
percentage and struggling does not quite summon up. The pod
Race are at the very bottom, the very very bottom

(04:11):
in runs, average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. They
are dead last in all of those seemingly important categories. Now,
Machado himself, coming into the weekend, he was hitting a
career low one to seventy four. He's actually lower than that.
Now he's the lowest qualified hitter in the National League.

(04:35):
Now he does have eleven home runs, as he's trying
to hit a home run on every single swing. So
in a media session over the weekend, Machado unloaded and
he was upset, very frustrated with the flood of advanced
statistics the nerds have brought to baseball, and he says
that he didn't even know and understand many of them.

(04:58):
He called out the fifth fielding independent pitching. He called that,
called that out. There was also w something something something
he called out. He said, quote, I just wish we
can get the analytics out of the way. Machado said,
this is a quote. I think there are too many
stats out there, too many stats, way too many numbers.

(05:21):
I don't even know half of the stuff that goes
up there talking about the scoreboard, crazy dude, quote continues.
It goes back to old school stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Man.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Machado said, just see the ball, hit the ball, at
the end of the day. Machada's rant continued, it's about competing,
play good defense. You win a ballgame, you make one
more run than the other team, you win a ballgame.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Right, So that is a
good jumping off point. Let us discuss the question thumbs

(05:51):
up or thumbs down. Thumbs up, thumbs down on Padre
star Manny Machado pushing back against the analytics. So I've
got essential oils, chernobyl, and residue, and we will combine
all of these things together and we're gonna have some

(06:13):
rock and rolls. What We're gonna have little rock and
roll for you. So, first of all, on the question
thumbs up thumbs down on Padre star Manny Machado pushing
back against analytics. Now, this is not just a one
thumbs up. This is a two thumbs up, two thumbs up.
That's how we're doing. So baseball did not get smart.

(06:33):
There's this idea that baseball got smarter. It didn't get smarter.
It got addicted to the spreadsheet. And the people who
own baseball teams, even though they're very wealthy, man of
them are not that bright. And they were sold a
bill of goods by the nerds, and I give the
guys credit. You know, if you're in the Ivy League
and you're lucky enough to go one of those Ivy

(06:53):
League schools, and you're pretty much set up. It's very
hard to f up when you go to an Ivy
League school because of the network of people that have
graduated before you who help out the alumni from those schools.
The hardest part is to get into an Ivy League school,
and once you're in, you really have to be a
screw up not to make it work. I guess dropouts
that have made billions from Ivy League schools, it's that's you.

(07:15):
Just you're set up anyway. The point of this is
that these guys were able to convince certain owners that
this is the way to do it, and some of
those teams early on had success. And now we have
this full on indoctrination, a full on indoctrination. We've reached
the point where the players now need a translator in
baseball for their own stats on the scoreboard. Now it's

(07:37):
easy just to it's miss Machados that well, he sucks
and that's why he doesn't like the nerd stats, because
these numbers aren't very good. It's deeper than that. Though.
This is not progress. Baseball is not progressing in the
right direction. Baseball used to be smooth jazz, smooth jazz,
right instinct rhythm feel. Now it's like you're doing the taxes.

(08:01):
You have to know the tax code and all the
loopholes and the squiggly lines and all that stuff. That's
what baseball is today. We're at the point now where
I'll give you a your example, Fernando Tatis has had
a terrible year for the Padre. He has one home run.
He's a three hundred and fifty million dollar player and

(08:22):
he's I think it might be more than that. He's
got one home run, and there are nerds that are
convinced he's doing well because the analytics say he's doing
very well. Yet the results home runs, runs battered in
he sucks at. But the the other numbers he's looking
good at. And you know what is that? That's what

(08:42):
I'm talking about. This is a disease. And you look
at the padres are They're a classically over engineered product.
Beautiful design, terrible performance for the Padres. The Padres don't
need more analytics. They don't they they need fewer iPads
is what they need more barrel contact, which is also

(09:05):
a stat the nerds have. They need some of that stuff.
And Machado after the weekend against the Metropolitan you have
a bad weekend against the Mets. That's an extra level
of suck. Machado is hitting one sixty nine now, but
at least he knows Manny Machado that he does not
need some data scientists to tell him he's bad, like

(09:26):
half of Major League Baseball. In fact, the data scientists said, well,
you're not that bad if you won't get the banning gears.
I when I started doing stuff with the Dodgers years ago,
this guy named Ross Porter, and I love Ross. He
was very nice to me. And Ross was an old
TV guy back in the heyday of television. But Ross
had been a Dodger broadcaster for a long time and
Ross I told him this at the time, and I've

(09:47):
talked to him a few times over the years since
I stopped doing that many years ago. Ross was ahead
of his time. He did every ridiculous stat when he
was doing those Dodger games on radio, and it was
just NonStop. We used to kid around uh back in
those days. Be like Tripper Jones on a Saturday afternoon
when the humidity level reaches one hundred and ten degrees,

(10:09):
he's he's got really good batting average. Really Atlanta braves
that whole stick. But that anyway, The point is it's
not see the ball hit the ball, although at the
core of baseball it is see the ball hit the ball.
Now it's sea ball. Let me check the tablet. Let
me see my my tablet to see how that looks.

(10:30):
And I think after just the launch angle a little bit, Yeah,
shove the launch angle up your tuckis is what I say.
And then you go out and strike out anyway, But
the launch angle was good though, Oh man, it's so
good and baseball like I'm I'm not totally against like
the numbers, it's just over the top. And they went

(10:52):
all in on the data at Major League Baseball. It's
like a essential oils. They were convinced that this oil
will cure everything, and from strikeouts to players getting along
with each other in the locker room, the clubhouse and
all that stuff. It's the essential oil. Of course, the
one they picked of all the oils. They didn't pick

(11:16):
lavender they picked snake oil. That's the essential oil that
they have, and they're so far in now it's like,
how do you get rid of it now? Originally, as
I was told by somebody at Major League Baseball who
worked for a team in Major League Baseball, the original
idea was this is content and they could they could
market it and sell it, and it was fan engagement

(11:36):
that there's a lot of nerds out there that love
this stuff and they'll spend a lot more time. Back
when this all started, there were people using just websites,
not social media as much, and so their argument was, well,
we can get these guys to stay on there, we
can sell more ads, and so we'll have a stat
for literally everything. Like for example, Jazz Chisholm took a
two hour bowel movement last Wednesday and then hit a

(11:57):
home run. So clearly when he hits a two hour
bowel movement, he's ready to go. On the other side,
Aaron Judge took a thirty minute bowel movement and then
he was out of the Yankee lineup. He was hurt.
Is there a correlation causation situation? Who knows? Anyway, So
again the old school was just go out there and compete.

(12:20):
The new school is to compute, and we get two strikes.
In the old days, they told you to choke up
on the bat. Should I just put the ball in play,
make a defender, make a play now. Of course, they
tell you that you must have the proper launch angle
to try to hit the ball to the moon. And
it's all about your process and it's not about the results.

(12:44):
So I like the old kiss method. Keep it simple, stupid,
That's what I like. Oh you're old, mallor you're a boomer,
mallor I'm not a boomer. I'm not. I'm supporting that
out all right. Secondly, the Chicago we go where the
Cubs have benched starting shortstop Dansby Swanson. When this happened
over the weekend, Craig Counsel said it was a mental reset.

(13:08):
That's the overpaid manager of the Cubs who lost to
the Giants on Sunday Night baseball, Swanson hitting a buck eighty.
We are in June, we are in the monther dune.
So another struggling player, Dansby Swanson, former Atlanta Brave. His
defense supposedly remains very good. They're very excited about his defense.
They're not paying him for his defense though they're paying

(13:30):
him to hit, and the bat is currently in the
Arctic as Dansby Swanson has one home run since May,
which I'm told is not good. So the question how
big a problem is Dansby Swanson for the Cubbies at
this point? So the manager here, Craig Counsel, what he's

(13:50):
doing is he candy coating extra sugar? He's candy coating this.
It's like he's running a Hershey rehab center and put
it in some chocolate fondue and just do that. And
then you're talking about reset, Reset, Mike Tukus, is what
I say, right? Will that'll spark a turn around? Please?

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Come on.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
Counsel doesn't believe that his job is to downplay what
everyone sees here. And then it's like it's like he's
trying to sell you a used car and there's no
engine and it's missing two tires. It's a great deal
though at this point calling it a reset is like
calling Chernobyl just to warm up. Act like seriously, A

(14:33):
Swanson is nearing the halfway point of his fourth season.
He's got seven a seven year contract, one hundred and
seventy seven million so he's got my malad Matthew, He's
got three years and eighty one million left, eighty one
million left on the books for Dansby Swanson. That seems problematic?

(14:53):
Am I being two reaction areas of talk trows? That
seems problematic. He's hitting one to eighty and the Cubs
by all accounts, seemingly stuck with him. They're married with
no prenup. So I hope I enjoy that Dansby is
thirty two, which means he's at the very end of
his athletic prime. Your athletic prime is typically twenty seven
to thirty two. Thirty two would beat the end of it.

(15:16):
And as of this moment, it appears that this is
a WY League coyote situation if you're familiar with the
old Looney Tones, and he's falling off a cliff, chasing
after the roadrunner time and time and time again, and
he's not even close to average that the numbers. Here's

(15:39):
another Nerd stat ops plus I don't know what that is.
He's according to that, he's twenty four points below your
baseline major league player, which seems problematic. It seems problematic,
and overall, the Cups have a roster of veteran underachievers.
You've got that cheating astro trash, Alex Bregman, who's still

(16:02):
hanging out there. Does he not lead baseball? Saw stat
on the I was watching the NBC thing on Sunday
because there's no basketball, no hockey, so I was watching
the Cubs and the Giants, and I'm pretty sure they
had a stat on there that he leads baseball and
runners left on base, which seems problematic. And you've got,
I mean down the Suzuki's been bad, the whole group,
and so Bregman in particular is on pace the cheating

(16:25):
es one one thousand and two one thousand hole is
on pace for just twelve home runs forty seven RBIs.
It has been disastrous. The Cubs mathematically are still right
in the mix of everything because they won that some
winning streaks. But it's not good. All right, Final fought.
Speaking of not good, we go to Arizona. The Diamondbacks
made an interesting roster move. They signed outfielder Max Kepler,

(16:49):
the former Minnesota twin who had a stopover in Philadelphia.
Now the reason this is interesting, Max Kepler is currently
suspended for cheating for Major League Baseball. He's a cheat.
Max Kepler did stayerids. He's serving in eighty game suspension.
He is not active yet. He's a pdchat. Kepler tested
positive back in January of this year for the Jim

(17:11):
Juice and so he's been suspended. He's ineligible to join
the team until June twenty fifth, so as of today,
seventeen days as we're doing this in real time, until
he can join the team, he remains on the restricted list,
does not count against the diamondbacks forty man roster until
that date. And so the question is why would the

(17:33):
Diamondbacks bother adding Max Kepler, the old Twin Old Philly
while he is still currently suspended for being a PD cheat.
So it makes no sense. The guy's got the PD cooties,
and he's got the cooties, and Arizona's acting like it's
a feature, not a bug. So I don't get it.

(17:53):
This certainly seems like a desperation play for the Diamondbacks.
And I was trying to find out who Max Kepler knows.
Must be some coach or front office underling that Max
has a relationship, because it's always who you know, not
what you know. And he's got to know somebody there
on the outside. This just reeks of desperation and that's it.

(18:15):
The Diamondback says, our friends in Australia would say acting
like a bunch of bloody ruse as Ozzie Waz would
would point out. There, they're hopping around and they're grabbing
whatever moves at this particular point, and like, what are
we doing here? And look the snakes. They did not
sign Max Kepler. They essentially adopted astray and they're hoping

(18:35):
that it still bites. Is slithering along and they're hoping
that it still bites at this particular point. It's a
coupon clipping exercise. Arizona's basically saying, hey, maybe the steroid
residue from the drugs he was taking in January. I
know it's June. There's something in there got a little stronger.

(18:56):
They haven't fully worn off yet, so we're betting on
the residue. The problem with that is, even if this
takes off, even if this guy plays well Max, let's
say he does benefit from being a cheat and he
gets a bunch of home runs for the Diamondbacks, which
is highly unlikely. He's ineligible. Let's say Arizona makes the
wild card, he's ineligible to play in the playoffs because

(19:18):
you're a steroid guy, you can't be in there. And
so he's banned from postseason. So that doesn't make any sense.
And wow, that's a low risk move, and that's the
argument that doesn't really matter, and all that stuff. It's
like buying a like a carton of whole milk. You're
buying the cart and the whole milk there, which expired
three weeks ago, and you still like, well, might still

(19:42):
be good, and you're like, well, that's why it's eighty
percent off. It just doesn't seem to make a lot
of sense, all right. It is the Ben Mahler Show.
If he'd like to be part eight seven seven ninety

was startled by Blank over the weekend in the Dodgers Dugout.

(24:05):
All right, then is the question? What is the answer?
Bobby in Florida, says Maury Povich with a lie detector test,
that's keelin pie. Bobby ferg Dog says, a hobo taking
a nap in it. Well, that would be that would
be alarming. Yeah yeah, James, is that you? Asher says,

(24:27):
there's James Ruther ferg Dog's Twitter band. What else he
dropped his betting slip from King Rory? What else do
we have pitched down? Ferg Dog tunneling into the dugout
after escaping from ex jail. That would be shocking. Rob
the Goatman says, startled by Robbie the Mariner fan dressed

(24:49):
as a hot dog by a caged animal from alf
the Alien old pineer. Look at that good use of
the the AI. Who else do we have? Pay down?
Shoheo Tani saw blind Scott in the dugout wearing a
banana hammock. Rebecca the ram fan says, probably shouldn't have

(25:10):
written this, but what the heck? Yeah? Why not? You
only live once? Enjoy your life, all right? Yolo? What
else do we have? Page down? Ghost rats from Shay
Ice from Donkey Sausage. What else do we have a
page down? I can't read that. We'll skip over that.
Tillo from Florida says the Spicy Gobbagool. The Spicy Gobbagool

(25:33):
gas station sushi from Eke in Roseville, Minnesota. Saw the
ghosts of Pete Rose and shoeless Joe Jackson from Ice Lee.
That's the name they have on their account. Who else? Oh,
that's that's our buddy from Cincinnati. Who else you have
page down? I can't read that. We've got to Bill,

(25:53):
says a teenage mutant. Ninja Turtle is the answer, Monkey
Biz Doug from South says his ex translator spiders Big
Spiders from courtesy Flusher. Timmy from Busco, Indiana says he
was startled by learning someone put icy hot in his jockstrap.

(26:14):
That would be rather shocking. Yes, all right, Uh Loraina,
do you have an answer the mather riddle of the
day here it is Dodger star show. El Tani was
startled by blank in the dugout over the weekend. A
herd of pigeons? Herd of pigeons? Is that correct? Is

(26:35):
it called a herd if there's a lot of pigeons.
I don't know. I feel like you made that up.
I feel like educated. They're not called a herd. There
is a herd. It's on the radio. Gets pent a
lot of money during the day, But not that. No,
the correct answer would be oh Tani was startled by
a giant cocka roach and the Dodger dugout cockroach. How

(26:58):
soon before they start selling the cockroaches at the little
Otani cockroaches and the Dodgers. Gosh, how cute would that be?
A little cockroach statue with the bat and a little
little cockroach. It would only cost you seven hundred dollars.
Why not, let's say hello to Andrew, who's in Bakersfield, California.

(27:19):
Hello Andrew, Welcome.

Speaker 6 (27:22):
Hey Ben edog is from Boston.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
What do you say.

Speaker 6 (27:29):
From from Boston? Boston?

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Who cares?

Speaker 6 (27:39):
He's a good rapper? Where am I from? Capistrano Valley
High School? Boy?

Speaker 1 (27:45):
You live in Bakersfield? You know you're not. We're in
near Capistrano Valley anymore. That's where the great Todd Marijuanovitch
went to high school.

Speaker 6 (27:54):
I believe it was a miche Jeho.

Speaker 1 (27:56):
You're incorrect. Todd Morenovitch, who was a eight or quarterback
in the eighties, graduated from Capol Valley High School. He
played at multiple high schools, but he ended up at
Cappol Valley. And you don't even know that. You're like
a fraud, dude. I know more about your high school
than you know.

Speaker 6 (28:10):
How about Danny die Maliason Mackenzie and Chris Culbertson at
Punter Mackenzie.
