Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boom! Shakalaka! And a ding-dong to you. It's hour number three.
Hour three, the Ben Maler Show podcast. We thank you
for listening and supporting us on this Tuesday, the eighth
day of September. So we'll start out in New England.
The news broke just before the program, and it is on.
(00:24):
It is really on as the Patriots, Christian Gonzalez becoming
the newest highly paid In fact, the highest-paid defensive back
in the NFL will get reaction there. Did the Patriots
overpay for Christian Gonzalez? We'll talk about that. Also, how
do you translate Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski saying he has
blinders on regarding the future of Tua Tungabailoa? Not a
(00:46):
good sign in the ATL. And what led to the
Giants dumping wide receiver Darius Slayton? We'll also take a
look into the crystal ball and where he ends up.
with his next NFL team. We'll get to all of
that and more right now. Here it is, our number three. Well,
(01:09):
not gonzo yet. Not gonzo yet. Welcome in the beginning
of another hour of the Ben Maller Show. We are
in the air everywhere. We hold a overnight conclave, and
(01:32):
we are where the imagination runs wild. So you better
not grab some bench. No, no, no. Buckle up, buckaroo,
as we are coast to coast, border to border, and beyond,
on the vast and spifflingly powerful microphones of FSR emanating
(01:53):
live from the smoker. What's in the smoker? The Hot
Take Smoker, guaranteed human from the world-famous Fox Sports Radio studios,
where Jordan, listener Jordan from Ohio, whose grandpa is buried
near Branch Rickey, the legendary baseball executive, he reminds us that,
(02:15):
you know, Mallard, we really need on this show, we
need some bull. I said, you know what, Jordan? You're
absolutely right. We're going to give you some bull. And
this show, if there's one thing we know, it's Bull,
and it's Weeble. And I see you over there.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I see you.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Mark the Walker nodded and said yes as well. It's

this frantic message by Sir Smokes-A-Lot and the number one
burner account. They reached out to me. Tree in Chicago said, Mallory,
I need to hear about the King. I said, I
can't tell you about the King, but I'll tell you
about DraftKings. The wait is over. Football is here, and
(03:14):
so is DraftKings. DraftKings is now live in all 50 states.

the promo code Mallory, M-A-L-L-E-R, to claim your special offer
at DraftKings.com. Again, that's promo code MALLER at DraftKings. The
crown is yours. Well, it is a case of not gonzo.
(03:38):
Not now and not anytime soon. A developing story. Our
lead out of the Commonwealth. If you missed it, it
happened just a little bit before we cracked the microphones
here on the Ben Maller Show. We have learned. that
Christian Gonzalez has agreed to a new contract, a record-setting contract.
(04:00):
He's a defensive back for the New England football team,
and the Patriots have given him a four-year contract, $ 135
million to play defensive back. Those guys used to get
paid chopped liver. Now it's $ 135 million. He's buying. So
if you didn't see this, perhaps not, we are told
(04:21):
the contract includes $ 102 million guaranteed. It averages $ 33. 7 million
per year. $ 33. 7 million per year, making Christian Gonzalez the
highest paid defensive back in the history of the National League.
(04:43):
Football League. Holy Woodson, Batman. Gonzalez surpassing Devin Witherspoon of
the Seattle football team who recently signed a contract to
make him the highest paid. Now, it is interesting to
note that Gonzalez is going to make $ 1 million more.
So he has trumped Devin Witherspoon by $ 1 million. That
(05:07):
is a good jumping off point. Let us discuss the question.
Keep it simple here. Give a knee jerk reaction. Did
the Patriots overpay for Christian Gonzalez? Did they end up
overpaying for Christian Gonzalez? All right. So I've got a
(05:27):
game show. We've got game show. We also have a
crusty old urine stained mattress and potato salad. And we'll
combine all of these things together and we are going
to put you under a spell. Yes, under a spell.
That is right. All right, so we begin with this.
All right, we begin with this. The Patriots negotiated Christian
(05:51):
Gonzalez a contract. I'm convinced that they found some Saudi
oil money and a dartboard. And they said, let's play
a game. We've got the Saudi oil money. We've got
the dartboard. And then we're going to purchase the deluxe
cornerback package. and every overpriced option that they offer us
at the dealership. Okay.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Everything.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
You don't need that stuff. I'll buy it anyway. Why not?
So $ 33. 7 million. At that price tag, $ 33. 7 million annually.
I'm convinced that even our friend Jerry in Rhode Island
would say Gonzalez should not have a receiver even line
up on his side of the field. Anyone who's worth
their salt should not line up against Christian Gonzalez. He
should be going against tumbleweeds. Who are you defending on
(06:35):
this play, Mr.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Gonzalez?
Speaker 1 (06:37):
I'm defending the tumbleweeds. That's who I'm defending.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I will concede everyone is overpriced in that sport. It's toontown.
It's not real. It's redonkulous. It's real, but it's not.
This contract has more guaranteed money, I'm convinced, than the
Massachusetts Road Project with three no-bid contractors, which seems to
happen a lot. So I've heard about the politics there.
(07:03):
So are the Patriots paying Gonzalez for what he's already accomplished,
or are they paying him for what he's going to
do over the course of the contract? Because Gonzalez actually,
on my big board, isn't the NFL's top defensive back.
He's good. He's not bad. I'm not trashing the guy.
He's just not at the very top of the list,
(07:24):
and he's merely the latest contestant in that game show.
The price is right. Cornerback edition. So, again, to answer
the question, did the Patriots overpay for Christian Gonzalez? Yeah,
I'm nodding my head yes. However, it's just simply the
cost of doing business for what is perceived to be
(07:46):
an elite young defensive back. And the NFL, we've talked
about this, they've got so much money. They're the last
thing that people watch live, the last thing that people
watch live. And so, as a result, they've got Mexican
cartel drug money. They're just... burning money because they don't
know what to do with it. They're burying it in
the backyard. It's wild. Now, meanwhile, speaking of wild, let's
(08:08):
go to Atlanta, where the announcement has been made, the
saddest quarterback announcement in the history of quarterback announcements in
the modern era. The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tungabailoa.
He is officially the week number one starting quarterback. But
Coach Kevin Stefanski refusing the day they announced that Tua
(08:32):
is going to be the starting quarterback, the head coach
of the Atlanta football team refusing to commit to anything
beyond this coming weekend. Listen to Kevin Stefanski. Boy, if
you're Tua, this is a kick to the nuts. Take
a listen. I'm a blinders person.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
I got the blinders on, so. I see week one
in front of me, and after this one, then we'll
start on the next one and those type of things.
So I don't think it's fair to really go past
this week on anything related to our football team.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
You think the Buffalo Bills say, well, we're just going
to start Josh Allen this week, and then we'll see
what happens. I have blinders on. Come on. You smell that?
That's fresh, hot bull crap is what that is. Play
it again. Play it again. This is a head coach
of an NFL team who's announcing that he will not
commit to his quarterback pass this week, but he's using
(09:26):
the B word. Take a listen.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
I'm a blinders person. I got the blinders on, so
I see week one in front of me. After this one,
then we'll start on the next one and those type
of things. So I don't think it's fair to really
go past this week on anything related to our football team.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Let's ask the coach in Baltimore. Is Lamar Jackson going
to be your starting quarterback past week two? Okay. I
got blinders on. I can't commit to that. Oh, my God. Oh,
my God. So the Falcons open up with the Pittsburgh
football team. And as you heard there, the B word
blinders used regarding the future. So Michael Penix Jr., the
real reason that this is happening is because the guy
(10:04):
the Falcons wanted to start, Michael Penix Jr., will be inactive.
He's not ready to go. Cooper Rush. Good luck on that.
We'll be backing up Tua. We'll likely get some plays
in there this weekend. So Penix admitted that he's, quote,
not where I want to be right now, he said physically,
although he says he's really close. Well, that's great. So
(10:26):
the Falcons will now have a different week. Number one
starting quarterback for the sixth consecutive year. Six straight years
the Atlanta football team will have a new quarterback. Where
have you gone, Matty Ice? Well, we know where he is.
He's now running the front office. So the question, how
do you translate Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski saying that he
(10:50):
has blinders on regarding the future of Tua Tungabailoa? So
Tua didn't exactly grab the Falcon by its wings, and
the starting job didn't grab it by its throat either,
and he's holding on to that gig by his pinky toe.
He's got his little pinky toe. My little pinky. He
(11:12):
found QB1 abandoned. It's really odd that this would happen,
a starting job like that. Tungabailoa found the QB1 job
abandoned on the side of the road like a crusty
old urine-stained mattress because Michael Penix Jr. could not answer
the bell. So how wonderfully Falcons is this? You had
(11:35):
a quarterback competition yesterday. there in the humidity of Georgia,
where one contestant couldn't compete. So Tua, at this point,
until proven otherwise, is like a washed-up boxer getting a
last-minute shot at a Vegas undercard fight. And if he
wins the undercard fight, he gets another undercard fight. And
(11:57):
they paid pretty much peanuts for Tungabailoa there. Miami swallowed
about $ 100 million in dead money to make Tua go away.
And now he has the keys to the nest by default.
And we saw in the preseason, not that those numbers
really matter all that much, but he was about as
soft as a peach cobbler, a fresh peach cobbler, and
(12:22):
struggling to push the ball downfield, which was a problem
at times in Miami, and just messy. Bedraggled is the
word I will use, bedraggled for For Tua Tungvaluwa. So
Stefanski essentially gave him what amounts to a one-week hall pass.
So beating Pittsburgh isn't enough. Tua needs to flash the
(12:43):
full QB1 repertoire and the skill set and all that stuff.
So in the NFL, availability in this case beats ability.
Tua's only real qualification is he's done it. And even
though he's had his own demons with concussions and all that,
he actually is able to play. He's got the pulse.
(13:05):
And Michael Penix Jr. has a doctor's note. He's not playing.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
All right.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Final thought. We go to the transaction wire where the
New York football giant said bye-bye to wide receiver Darius Slayton. Yeah,
just days before their season opener against the Cowboys. He
was the team's longest tenured player. Been with the team
since 2019, spent seven seasons with the franchise as a
(13:34):
fifth-round pick. Now he has been kicked out of the Giants'
locker room. So the question, what led the Giants to
dump longtime wide receiver Darius Slayton? So this is a
case where John Harbaugh needed to flex something. Like, this
is a flex move by John Harbaugh there at the Giants' facility.
(13:57):
Darius Slayton spent All that time in Big Blue's universe.
Seven years. That sounds pretty impressive, seven years, until you
remember that those seven years were spent aboard the Hindenburg
with helmet on and the chin strap and all that.
So Slayton survived. Pat Shermer, Joe Judge, Brian Dayball survived.
(14:24):
And essentially, he had become the football equivalent of like
an old Howard Johnson motel swimming pool, which technically still there,
but management would really prefer nobody uses it because the
diving board's not all that safe. And he had all
these years of equity, Slayton did with the Giants, but...
(14:45):
Harbaugh came in there and he's like, oh, wait a minute.
I don't value that. That has about as much value
as a couple of expired coupons from Bed Bath & Beyond.
So after outlasting those three coaching hires, John Harbaugh finally
walked in and he took a look at Darius Slayton
(15:06):
and treated him like the last container of potato salad
at a Labor Day cookout. And there were flies on
it and just right into the trash. Right into the trash.
All right, so now that that's happened, let's go to
the prediction market. And the question here is, where does
Darius Slayton land now that he has been decommissioned by
(15:30):
the Giants? And as a distant relative of Nostradamus and
friend of Nostradinus, who lives in the Seattle area, his
roommate is currently Sasquatch. So the question here, as we
gaze into the crystal ball and we answer the question
of what's going on with him, where does the Darius
(15:52):
Slayton future hold as he's been let go by the Giants?
So I see horseshoes, flight plans, muskets, and arrowheads. I've
got the Colts, the Jets, the Patriots, and the Chiefs.
He'll end up with one of those four teams, and
I'm never wrong about this– Let's not pretend that Darius
(16:14):
Slayton is some kind of prized free agent truffle that's
being fought over by the champagne and caviar crowd. I
don't buy that. He's 29, I believe, coming off surgery.
His production has been falling down, down, down, down, down
like an elevator. It's going down an elevator shaft in
a radio flyer wagon, just like that. So at 29,
(16:38):
coming off surgery. injury. Slayton is not working for Pixar.
His career at this point is suspended animation. The Colts,
there's a connection there with Daniel Jones. Good luck on
that continuing to be successful for the Colts. They know
each other, so it's not what you know, it's who
(16:58):
you know. The Jets offer geographical convenience. New England could
use someone else in the wide receiver room who's got
some cachet to their name and kansas city just continues
to lack playmakers not that darius slayton at this point
is a playmaker but they just they don't have much
(17:18):
there they they made a few moves but nothing really
all that sexy so kansas city could turn somebody they
found behind a walmart into a third down weapon and
that's really what they need so slayton isn't shopping for
a starting role. He's, at this point, a supporting actor
wandering around the NFL unemployment carnival. Everyone's unemployed here. They're
(17:43):
trying to get a job. And you're like, well, what's
going on with that? And hoping somebody still has a
ticket to the Tilt-A-Whirl at the employment carnival, trying to
find a job. I need a job. This job is
not that easy. That's it. Man alive. All right, here's
the Ben Maller Show as we are working our way
(18:07):
through the overnight hours. And if you would like to
be part of this hour, part of the show, you

Speaker 2 (18:28):

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Yeah, we're doing it live. There's actually somebody here. Enjoy this.
It won't be here forever. At some point, these companies
will get rid of Overnight Radio. But we have it now,
and we're going to enjoy it as long as they'll
have it.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Sorry.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Time now for the Malheur Riddle of the Day. We
also have Malheur's Mount of Money. It's the all-Malheur branded.
The all-Malheur branded hour. So here's the Malheur Riddle of
the Day. Somebody named Andy Sedaris, who was a longtime
ABC sports director for Monday Night Football... In the 1970s
and the 1980s, he took credit for inventing the blank,
(19:03):
which is still used 40 years later on every sports telecast. Again,
the Mallard riddle of the day, Andy Sedaris, a longtime
Monday Night Football director. This was back in the days
when Chet Forty and all the legends, the late great
Chet Forty. I worked with, well, I was an intern
when he worked at the Mighty 690 in San Diego
(19:25):
with Hartman. But Andy Sedaris, again, longtime ABC sports director
for Monday Night Football in the 70s and the 80s.
He took credit for inventing the blank, which is still
used on every single sports telecast to this day. And
that is the Mallard Riddle of the Day. The answer,
we'll get to it, and we will do it next.
Speaker 6 (19:49):

Speaker 4 (21:05):
Hi, Bill.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Don't talk to me. And Koopa Loop at a Bronco fan.
That's a Bronco fan. Tomorrow, the NFL season begins. How
exciting is that? It's amazing. Already? I can't believe it's
another NFL season.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
All right.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
We're back at it. Here's the riddle of the day. Yeah,
I'm fired up. Big, big things happening on this show
for the NFL. So, Andy Sedaris, you don't know who
that is, but he was a longtime ABC Sports director
of Monday Night Football. The legendary Rune Arledge and Chet
(21:42):
Forte and Andy Sedaris. So Andy Sedaris was the ABC
Sports director for Monday Night Football back in the 70s
and the 80s. He took credit for inventing blank, which
is still used on every sports broadcast that I've ever
watched to this day. This thing that he came up with,
his little baby. And it's very popular today. Femi, the
(22:07):
top Uber Eats driver there in the Twin Cities, says
NFL cheeseburger. There's the cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger. Spray on tan
from Alf the Alien O'Piner. The dump button guessed by
Mark the Walker. Don't talk about my button. Hey, that
(22:27):
was a radio station in Pennsylvania, which did at one
point carry Fox Sports Radio programming, a small AM station,
I believe in Allentown, PA. The first ever to have
the dump button. There's my, I can do more on that.
Maybe I'll do a whole episode of the Fifth Hour
about that.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Wait, wait, what would you call that?
Speaker 6 (22:44):
Matt Maller, fun fact.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
There's a fun fact. And Nada Burner says, this guy
invented the slightly behind game clock. Welcome to Ann Arbor.
Set your clocks back one second. Very funny. Very funny.
Doc Dan says, hot sideline reporters is the answer. What
else do we have? Kevin, Atomic Kevin, also said the
extra one second. Food Pyramid guessed by Big Mouth Big Belly.
(23:11):
What else do we have? Page down. Supermarket Steve got
it right, although he did not use the proper term,
but he did get it right. Bad job by you.
A water bottle with vodka in it from Fargo Pete.
Bad Broadcasters guessed by our buddy Joe the Ghost Hunter
in Ohio. What else do we have? Courtesy Flusher went
with a certain type of camera that Jerry Jones would
(23:35):
like a lot there. What else? Jim in Colorado says,
Howard Coe sells toupee. Same answer as the Pizza Papa.
You guys must be lined up there. What else do
we have? Page down, page down. Timmy in Busco, Indiana.
Got it right. A couple of you guys got it right.
Icky Shuffle from JT, the wingman. Fat Daddy said the visible, invisible,
(24:00):
first down marker is the answer. All right. I think
that's enough there. All right. What's the answer? Lorena, again,
the riddle. Andy Sedaris, longtime ABC Sports director for Monday
Night Football in the 70s and the 80s, took credit
for inventing blank. The blank, which is still used today
(24:20):
on pretty much every sports broadcast.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
Well, I was thinking the Telestrator.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
The Telestrator. Is that correct? Survey says?
Speaker 7 (24:29):
No.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Andy Sedaris, longtime ABC Sports director. Monday Night Football, 70s
and 80s. He took credit for inventing the honey shot.
You know what the honey shot is, Lorena?
Speaker 4 (24:43):
No, but it sounds delicious.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
Well, that is when you're watching a football game and
for no reason they put a really hot chick on TV.
Oh my gosh, are you kidding me?
Speaker 2 (24:53):
No, no, no.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
My initial answer was going to be busty women in
the stands.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
Well, that would have been correct. You would have got
it right. So this guy, Andy Sedaris, they made a
documentary back in the 70s about him.
Speaker 4 (25:09):
Wow, I was right. I have it written.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
I'm going to send you my notes. He was the
guy during ABC Sports, like Monday night, he would instruct
the camera guys to find the hottest chicks, like the
cheerleaders or the hot women in the crowd, and then
the hottest ones would end up on television. And that
became known as the Honey Shot. Now, he was also
part of it. He was not the guy that came
(25:32):
up with split-screen views or slow-motion replay. He helped on
that stuff, instant replay. But his claim to fame, Andy Sedaris,
who's dead. He's been dead for a while. But he
came up with the Honey Shot. which there have been
women that have become famous because they get on TV.
Remember at the World Cup, we talked about how there
(25:52):
were some supposedly side deals I read where some influencer-type
women had side deals with agencies to get on the
World Cup broadcast just so they would go viral and
become more powerful in that world. So pretty crazy. Anyway,
there you go. That's my.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
I would have been right, just so you know.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
I just want to clarify that. Could have, should have.
Let's go to the calls here. My board is being reset.
All right, here we go. Now the board has been reset.
Let's say hello to, let's go to Phylexis, America's favorite
drag queen caller in Buffalo. It must be football season.
Phylexis is back for another NFL season. Hello, Phylexis.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Ben, how the hell are you? I miss you so much, honey.
I love you with all my heart.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
I'm a big fan. Where have you been, Phylexis? We
haven't heard from you in a while. I hope everything's okay.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
I've been around and around and around. I've had some
medical problems and stuff, but I'm still kicking and taking
names later.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Well, we need you, Phylexis. How many toes do you
have now, Phylexis?
Speaker 3 (26:57):
Oh, I still got... Seven Toes, I think.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Seven Toes. This is America's only... You're the only one, Phylexis,
only drag queen with seven toes that calls overnight talk radio.
So congratulations on that.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
I know. I should be awarded. I should have a
song or something.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
You want a song? Well, you do have the Christmas song.
Who cares about Christmas?
Speaker 3 (27:20):
I'm talking about the real stuff, baby.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
We play the Christmas music every year.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Come on, let's rock and roll.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
You know what? I can reach out to Jay Scoop
and just Josh and our buddy in Colorado.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Oh, I love Jay Scoop. That's my sweetheart. I love
him with all my heart.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
All right, calm down. So we made a tribute song
to you for Lexus. What would the parody be?
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Oh, no, not this one again.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Well, no, no. I'm just asking. Just give them some
help here. What song... do you think would work what's
your favorite song um.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
You better be good to me you.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Better be good to me all right i'll throw that
out jay scoop you know what to do just josh
milkman mike in colorado and some of the other guy
buddy in flint michigan all these guys so yeah oh who.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Cares about that guy oh anyway he.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
Comes up with great music what are you talking about
ohio al how about ohio al I don't like Michigan.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
That place is weird.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
How about Ohio?
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Ohio's okay.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Is that your nurse talking to you in the back?
Is that what's going on?
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Oh, that's my police scanner.
