Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is a marvel to behold. It is our number
three talk and Bay's ball. My goodness me. So the
Dodgers won again. They win most of the time. They
beat up the Pirates. However, one of the big additions
this offseason for the Dodgers has been terrible sucking at

(00:20):
a time he cannot suck. So why would Dave Roberts
avoid calling Kyle Tucker a Dodger disappointment even though that's
exactly what he is? Also in Arizona, does manager Tory
Lavello's vote of confidence put this Katel Marte drama to
rest in the Valley of the sun as he apparently

(00:42):
decided he didn't want to play against Joeotani because Otani
was too good? And where does the in the NFL?
What does the Joe Burrow restructured Bengals contract land with you?
We'll wrap all of that around. We're gonna walk on
sunshine right now here. It is our number three, chuckered out,

(01:06):
tuckered out. Wel come, in the beginning of another hour
of the Ben Mahlor Show. We are in the air
of reware brothers in sports Talk, believe it or not, Yeah,
we are and sisters brothers and sisters. That's right. Yeah,

(01:28):
Coast to coast and border, the border and beyond on
the vast and absurdly powerful microphones of fs R, we
are just sublime, absolutely sublime and m emanating live from
the talk as we talk a mile a minute talk

(03:01):
and talk about baseball this hour to begin the hour, anyway,
in our lead from the Big Leagues where the Doyers
beat up the Pirates. Now, actually the Pirates hadn't ear lead.
Paul Skeins was on the mound, and then Pittsburgh they
went to the bullpen, and if I'm not mistaken, I
forget what any it was. Dodgers scored like a ton
of runs in the seventh or the eighth inning and

(03:21):
the Pirates' pitching staff used sixty eight pitches to get
out of one half an inning against the Dodgers. That
sucks anyway, Dodgers won that game. They remained the team
to beat in baseball. They are the gold standard back
to back champs, trying to go three in a row,
and they've done that this great start to the season,

(03:42):
all these wins neck and neck with the Atlanta Braves
for the top record in sports. So the Dodgers have
done all this and they have not gotten consistent middle
of the order production that they anticipated with free agent
Kyle Tucker. By the way, Mookie Betts looks washed up
all Also, he's just a he's a slap hitting defensive shortstop.

(04:05):
I guess at this, but I think he's like good defensively.
That Mookie Betts is terrible. And Kyle Tucker, Now, if
you've not been following the Tucker story in particular, this
would be a massive deal if some butts were candy
and nuts that Dodgers are not. They're not getting much
of anything out of Kyle Tucker. He's had a couple
of games with most party sucks, and it's not talked

(04:28):
about the contract he got and the return on investment.
The ROI is terrible. So, if you've not been paying attention.
When asked about Kyle Tucker and how bad he's been recently,
what do you think Dave Roberts said. Do you think
he said, well, I like him in that spot, be
no comment or see, oh he's good? What was a

(04:51):
form of see now? Roberts did acknowledge. He said it's
been up and down, which is very polite. You have
real choppy, Real Choppy said he's working hard. Dave Roberts said,
of Kyle Tucker. You just hope he can find something
that sticks. And then Roberts summarized his view with a

(05:11):
foreword message. A four word message from Dave Roberts. Dave
Roberts said, when asked about Kyle Tucker's performance, I wouldn't
say disappointed. I wouldn't say disappointed. That's the money quote.
You know how the rules are. Money quote. You play

(05:33):
off the money quote. So that's a good jumping off point.
Let us discuss the question why why would Dave Roberts
avoid calling Kyle Tucker a Dodger disappointment when it's obvious
that's exactly what he is? All right? So I've got
Dole whip public square because you know why not. And

(05:56):
if that was not enough, we also have the came over.
So we'll combine all of these things together, and you
and I are going to have all the fixings. All
the fixes is what we're gonna have. So first of all,
I'm gonna tell you why to answer the question why
would Dave Roberts avoid calling Kyle Tucker a Dodger disappointment?
I'll tell you why because this is the most predictable,

(06:20):
most Dodger coded, most front office approved blowney that you
could possibly serve up. Kyle Tucker has been a spectacular failure,
all right, relative to the contract and the expectations that
he had. And yet Dave Roberts will not touch the

(06:42):
D word in terms of disappointment, not going there, not
gonna happen, not gonna do it. He won't touch it
with a ten foot fung goal bat, not gonna happen. Now,
you've heard of dull Whip, very popular Disneyland, Pineapple and all.
That's some other flavors. Well, this is a spinoff of
doll Whip. This is La Dodger Whip. More soft serve

(07:05):
from the Dodgers calling out a superstar. That's a third
rail ami in third rale. Mom, man, don't touch the
third rail. And so Dave Roberts knows that. And if
you touch that, now, you don't die in Dodger Land.
If you do that, If you dare publicly criticize one
of the Dodger players, you get zapped by the nerd Brigade.

(07:29):
Their sound. Yeah, the nerd Brigade in the front office.
They come and tack you. They do. It's not good.
So corporate optimism is mandatory, absolute mandatory. And I'm from
the old country. I like when somebody sucks, it's pretty simple.
Just call them out. They're not doing their job. It's
not high school, it's not youth sports. It's professional baseball.

(07:50):
It's the industrial complex of sport. And yet they don't
do that. And this guy has been l floppo, not
l choppo. L floppo is what he has been. And
I guess they're worried about hurting his feelings. I know
this is all the rage in all of sports, and
it drives me nuts. And I admit that, and I've
talked about it a lot. And we go on. The
Dodgers gave Kyle Tucker a two hundred and forty million

(08:14):
dollar contract. They paid him plausibly to be elite, plausibly
to be elite, and he's given them a couple of
really good games and a lot of black a lot
of black games. In fact, you could argue, instead of
being a Dodger, he's actually a jag, not a Jacksonville jag.

(08:35):
He's just a guy, a jag. That's it, that's it.
And then how about Dave Roberts, oh Man, Dave Roberts
saying he's working hard, Okay, well that's worth sixty million
dollars a year. He's working hard. He's not hitting, but
he's working on. Kyle Tucker And I know my guys
in Chicago. Treeses driving around right now, the Windy City,

(08:58):
and you got your feme. All my cub guys in Chicago,
they're laughing. We talked about this last year. Kyle Tucker
was so bad after the All Star break in Chicago
that they benched his ass. And the Dodger Hubris They're like,
oh no, we have all the answers. Okay, well, now
we're into June. The guy still blows. If you go

(09:19):
back to last year, Kyle Tucker should be playing for
the Toledo mud Hens or my favorite Triple A team,
the WU Socks in Worcester. That's where he should be.
Secondly to Arizona, we go Arizona. We love baseball drama
and another dramatic story in the Valley of the Sun.
There are factions of the Diamondbacks organization on who are

(09:43):
not happy with All Star second basement could tell Marte
and his lack of days ago approach. Now, Mart's played
in most of the games, although the boiling point was
Apparently the other day the Diamondbacks were playing the Doyers
and this guy named Otani was on the mat. Apparently
it's pretty good, and Marte took himself out of the lineup.

(10:06):
He was originally going to be in the lineup and
then he was pulled from the lineup. He wasn't hurt.
He just didn't want his statistics to go down from
facing a top level major league pitcher, and this became problematic.
This is apparently not the first time he's done it.
Marte has been accused of setting a bad example for
younger players and even the veterans, a poor example for

(10:29):
the veterans on the Arizona Diamondbacks. And so if a
star like Marte could tell Marte can sit out against
the elite pitchers in baseball and just take unannounced time
off at the last minute, it in theory undermines discipline. Well,
why is he allowed to do it? I mean, I

(10:50):
want to do what's over that's not right, you know
that whole thing. And he's also been accused Marte of
not running out ground balls, which is i'd say ninety
five percent of the big leagues. It's a different conversation.
It's been that way for at least forty years. The
big league jog is a real thing, not big league true,
the big league jog. So Arizona manager Tory Leavello has

(11:13):
entered the chat, and he's now addressed the Komodo dragon
in the room, Tory Levello, who must have photos of
someone in ownership. He continues to have that job. It's
pretty wild anyway, Leavello said, I can wholeheartedly tell you
that Ktel has been an unbelievable player for the Diamondbacks
for a long time. He said, there are days off

(11:37):
that are needed. Tell that to Cal Ripken, there are
days off that are needed. They are fairly scripted, Levello said,
in a long winding rant. And he said, though that
this underlying theme that he's not a good teammate, that
he's pulling the fabric of the clubhouse chemistry, it's all
not true, not true at all, he said. And then

(12:00):
Lovello put on his knee pads and said, of katl Marte,
he's been a great teammate, a great human being, really,
a great human being, a great husband. How does he
know that? Great father? How does he know that? And
he appears to be one of the best players as
good as all the rest in the National League. And
that's what I'm going to focus on. Close quote. So
this has become an issue the trade deadlines in early August,

(12:22):
and this story popped up recently, leading to speculation that
could tell Marte is in play for a relocation situation
inside the portal. So the question does manager Tory Lovello's
vote of confidence put this ka tell Marte drama to
rest in Arizona? So come on, give me a break,

(12:47):
put it the rest. In professional sports, a vote of
confidence is what it is, just a polite corporate way
of saying, we've got a massive problem. This is not good,
not good at all. And if you keep it real,
when when things are going good, if everything is hunky dory,

(13:08):
a word that doesn't get used much, two words, hunky dorry.
If everything's good, everything's kosher. Why is Tory Lavello out
here running a pr cleanup crew like he's the White
House press secretary. The math is pretty simple on this.
Someone and we don't know who, someone within the Diamondbacks

(13:28):
clubhouse clearly has had enough of Coutell Marte's act. And
that is the only reason that Bob Nightingale got the leak.
Somebody leaked the story to Nightingale from inside the building,
a radioactive leak, mind you. And this doesn't happen by accident.

(13:49):
So there's two theories. It's a player on the team's
annoyed because they have to play against the top pitchers
and Marte can skip games, so they're upset about that.
So you've got that. The other option is the Diamondbacks
are doing this intentionally to try to light a fire
under kateel Marte. I think that's very unlikely. Scenario A

(14:12):
is the much more likely scenario that is going on,
and so it's radioactive and all that doesn't happen by mistake.
Someone intentionally wanted the dirty laundry to be hung out
in the public square, and so they hung it outside
in the public square and friendly fire, which is what
this is. Somebody within the team or in the locker

(14:34):
room who had access to this, who knew about it,
and so that means the room is fractured, there's a chasm,
and this is the reaction is the classic Hey, I'm
a player's manager, Tory Lavello, I like all my guys,
and I would argue Levello is too close, too soft
and way too protect I don't like it. At this point.

(14:56):
He's not managing, he's babysitting. You're talking about a great parent,
what a great father, what a great person. Martell is
a little too much, a little too much frosting on
the cake. I'm just saying, it's a little too much,
a little too much. It's a little sponge bath, a
car wash, kid glove treatment. Pick your metaphor, whatever you

(15:16):
want to use the pick your metaphor. It all fits
the circus under the big top, under the big top.
And if your star player needs constant coddling, then he's
not a high level star. He's not a bona fide star.
He needs to be baby. And it's like a science
project and all that. Don't say anything, you might upset him.

(15:39):
How do you live life like that? Seriously? If no
thick skin at all? So Lavello, he's got that soft
touch approach and good luck and for some it seems admirable.
Oh he's a player's manager, they say, And how great
is that? I call it enebly, highly enabling, highly enabling.

(16:02):
And this public display was not it was not reassurance
by the Diamondbacks manager. It was damage control. DC a
little damage control there. You simply cannot run a big
league team like it's a daycare. You can't do it.
And so this story, trust me, trust me, bro, This
story is not over. There'll be more leaks to come

(16:26):
out and they might want to call roto Ruter because
there's a lot of leaks and the trade deadlines coming up.
Keep an eye on that could tell Marte is he
heading out of Arizona? Where's he going? Where does he
end up?

Speaker 2 (16:40):
All right?

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Meanwhile, we go to the NFL and we have a
developing story out of since sad Nati where the Bengals
have restructured Joe Burrow's contract and they created ten million
dollars just like that in cap space. They converted some
of Joe Burrow's base salary into a signing bonus. They

(17:02):
lowered his cap hit this year, and they have more
financial flexibility. The question where does this Joe Burrow restructured
Bengals contract land with you? So this is red meats
and red meat in the lions Den for me, it's
on the surface, say, well, it's bookkeeping with a little

(17:23):
bit of a twist, a little bit of a twist.
Cincinnati essentially has turned Joe Burrow's contract into circ du
so let, the same routine we see all the time.
And I have long died on this mountain, on this
hot take mountain. It's not a restructure. It's a financial
hocus pocus, abracadabra presto magic trick with a smoke machine.

(17:47):
NFL teams, at least the good ones, not the Bengals, are,
but the NFL teams in general have mastered Bernie made
Off and Enron level finagling. If you know who they are,
if not, just Google or a item. The NFL cap
is basically a legal Ponzi scheme, is what it is.

(18:07):
And it's the perfect fall guy. You gotta have a
fall guy. The only system, the salary cap, where you
can at the same time be broke and rich at
the same time. So I have long said the cap
is crap. Let's stop pretending the cap is real. Stop
defending the cap is real. It is a suggestion, not

(18:29):
a rule. And as the saying goes, Okay, as the
saying goes, there are lies, damned lies, and the NFL
salary cap. That's that's what I'm talking about. And they,
the Bengles here, did not save money. They just moved
the furniture to the other side of the room. So
you had the sofa when you come in the front door.
Off to the right was the sofa, and then you

(18:51):
had the tables on the side, and you had a
little little table in front. Well, you just moved it
to the other side of the room, and you move
the TV over a little bit, and that's it. You
just move things around. In this case, you kick the
bill down the street. Now some are calling this a
trip to the barber shop for a haircut. It is
not for Joe Burrow. Spiler alert, spoiler alert. Joe Burrow

(19:15):
did not lose any money. It looks a little different.
It's a comb over. It is what it is, right,
it's the same underneath, and he did cut any hair
anything like that. Joe Burrow is getting the same money
he would have gotten before this. It's just being reclassified.
So again, Abra cadabra, and there you go. You move

(19:36):
a couple of decimal points around and you push the
costs down the line. You get more cash. Now. It's
kind of like getting a loan, a payday loan, if
you will. It is the Ben Maeler Show. If you'd
like to be Part eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
It looks like we're going to have the World Cup

(19:59):

will need listeners to be a part of that. And
we're gonna have to go a little faster than we
did for the NFL book them. There's only thirty two
teams in the NFL book them. There's forty eight in
the World Cup. So we're gonna have to skid daddle quickly,
which is good because we don't know anything about these
teams anyway. Also, coming up later this hour, if you

you will, we've got the Queen of Hearts with Lorana.

We'll skip over that. What else do we have to see?
Page down? Let's see here. She planned to have a
jump rope line with a bunch of strippers from Milkman Mike.
Now that sounds good, Milkman Mike. Yes, what else? We
have something involving bananas from Elmo after Dark, a happy

(23:34):
dance party from Eke in Roseville, Minnesota. She according to
Timmy and Busco Indiana, she planned a cornhole tournament from
our buddy Timmy, a riot from Donkey Sauce. You don't
need to plan a riot. Those things happen anyway. Those
riots pop up, Loraina, Do you have an answer, Lorena?

Speaker 5 (23:51):
Ah, yes, I was thinking a barbecue cookout.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
A barbecue cookout? Is that correct?

Speaker 4 (23:56):
No?

Speaker 1 (23:56):
That is incorrect? The correct answer, Cardi B. While eating
a SpongeBob SquarePants popsicle. Cardi B planned a social media
prayer circle for Nick fans. Yeah, oh, you can pray
with Cardi B. Sure that'll help out. Let's say hello

(24:20):
to here. He is Mason, the Millennial? Is he there?

Speaker 2 (24:36):
Your body really like that Tony Lavello's story. But you know,
can I do you one better? Ben, mister Mallard, mister Mallick,
can I do you one better? How about? How about
in the Bay Area where I reside? How about college manager?

(24:57):
College results?

Speaker 6 (24:59):
Do you like?

Speaker 1 (25:00):
Tell me college college roster? Now? I was told by
Danny and Nashville that this guy is the greatest manager
of all time Tony by Tello. Yeah, yeah, oh yeah, all.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
Those Knoxville fellas and stuff.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
Right are we?

Speaker 7 (25:17):
Now?

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Are we hitting the sauce Mason, the millennial? I feel
like there's a happy hour here.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
Well yeah, well there's a wedding tomorrow. I'm actually in
the wedding.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
You're in the wedding. Your congratulations, you're in the wedding.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Yes, it's a celebratory week. And you know, wouldn't you
believe it? It's on Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
The wedding is Well, you saved money. It's very inconvenient
if you have a wedding on a Wednesday for the
people that attend the wedding, and you will save money
when you have a wedding on a Wednesday, I know
that's why they booked it. Yeah, I know they put
very cheap. They're saving some cash. Are you're still driving
a bus last week? Talked to you would become a
bus driver? All right, you don't need to catch.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
Up too much.

Speaker 7 (26:01):
But in the other other stuff, you know, what does
that mean?

Speaker 1 (26:08):
Oh? You're everyone wants to do contact creation coding? Coding?
Isn't that all going to be AI?

Speaker 3 (26:16):
Though?

Speaker 1 (26:16):
Coding?

Speaker 4 (26:17):
Right?

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Is now going to AI? The coding.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
I created a Matt Chapman tracker the other day. It
was very interesting because Matt Chapman obviously went like orah,
like what fifty seven in his loss at baths and
he had to hit a home run in like over
one hundred at bats. I mean that was crazy.

Speaker 1 (26:35):
Well he does that every year, So that's the Matt
Chapman experience. Yeah, all right, well Mason, I love that
you're back on. Hopefully you can call us every once
in a while. Yes, don't be a stranger. Is that correct? Yes? Yes? Yeah,
all right, go back to the go back to the sauce.
All right, please, thank you. There's Mason the millennial. Now
here's a guy that vanished as well. I think he
just got out of jail right there. Let's say hello
to eat Dog. Hello, Eat Dog in New York.

Speaker 7 (27:01):
Thank you very much, mister Ben.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
Congratulations on your release. Rikers Island treated you well. Yes, no,
that was never in jail.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
Now where have you been.

Speaker 1 (27:11):
You've been away for most of the year. You were
very active at the end of last year and then
you disappeared.

Speaker 7 (27:17):
Well ever since they said they did say I was
was recalled. They did say are you hanging.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
Out with Mason the Millennial? What is going on here?

Speaker 7 (27:30):
My goodness, listen, they said that was one of the
worst calls there ever was turned me off?

Speaker 1 (27:36):
Oh, you were offended by that. Yes, you're a delicate person.
You do not want to be criticized. Well, you'll be
happy to know that Dorko has passed you by, so
you are no longer the worst caller. Dorko is in
Hawaii and he is worse than you. Poppy is also
worse than you, So you're you should be very happy.

Speaker 7 (27:55):
Okay. Also, how about Fernando that s he's out of
a slump, but it's when he hit the ball to second.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Mas Yes, I think tatis is he was he have
to He's on pace now for three home runs. He's
he's doing very well.

Speaker 7 (28:10):
He's going to rise to the occasion.

Speaker 1 (28:13):
Yes, if he gets traded. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (28:15):
Also, I want to say hello once again to the
Late Night to his sister.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Big fan of your work, Late Night Drug Tester. He

Well, you know he's on podcasts.

Speaker 1 (28:29):
Right, Well, his name gets mentioned a lot. Uh. And

Or you could use those in the snow. You know,

Speaker 5 (40:30):
Very sensitive to cold weather.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
Now you you're from Oregon, Lorena, you're living in La.
Have you done the ultimate La thing, the surf and
the turf where you surf in the morning and then
go and like ski in.

Speaker 5 (40:40):
The No, but you know I should do that.
