Speaker 1 (00:01):
You and John Ramos is here as settling in on
a Monday where we've got a little bit more World
Cup action. We'll find out by the end of the
week who the Round of sixteen is. We'll also find
out by the end of the week whether Lebron James
will opt in or out of his contract with the
(00:22):
Cleveland Cavaliers. But tonight we'll find out. They don't have
to wait till the end of the week to find out.
Tonight we will find out who the NBA's Most Valuable
Player is as the what is this? The second annual
NBA Awards show will be taking place. It happens tonight
in Santa Monica. A bunch of awards being handed out tonight.
(00:43):
Six Man of the Year has been uh talked about,
Rookie of the Year, a big conversation with Ben Simmons
or Donovan Mitchell. But also tonight the granddaddy of them all,
if you will, for awards, the NBA's Most Valuable Player
award gets handed out, and Jonas it is between James Harden,
Lebron James, and Anthony Davis for the league's most Valuable
(01:07):
Player honor. It's just it's stunning to me. Dan absolutely
stunning that Carmarlo Anthony is not on that list. I
think he got screwed. And now you wonder why e
t opted in on the contract. He felt jaded and
he wanted to get his money. Um. In all seriousness, though,
why is this really like even needing needing to be
(01:27):
an award? Everybody understands it's James Harden. Why is this
a production? I don't understand that we all sort of
get the idea that it's gonna be James Harden's. Yeah.
I think the NBA, And to go back on the
on the timing of how this all played out, the
NBA saw the success of the NFL Honors, the program
that they do the night before the Super Bowl and
(01:48):
you get all the players, and maybe, unfortunately, and I
hate to admit this because I think it's the dumbest
thing on earth that they gets so stupid, maybe they
also saw why some people like the SPS. I think
the SPS are just It is the worst sports programming
of the sixty five days of the year, next next
to the Little League World Series. It's the worst thing
(02:09):
on television. I'm not kidding. I would rather watch I
would rather watch Southeast play Northwest in a Little League game,
than watch you got best male Golf performance. Um, okay, great,
so's I watched golf all year, but I saw who
on the U S Open and who won the Masters.
But you guys gave an award, so now I know
who it is. Yeah, it's terrible. Um. I get the
(02:31):
idea that they want to capitalize and they want to
look at what the NFL didn't have these award shows,
and it's nice to have it after the fact. There's
a reason though, that the NFL and Roger Goodell moved
the Pro Bowl from after the Super Bowl to before
the Super Bowl. The idea was, why would you want
your season to end on an exhibition? So why would
(02:51):
you want your season to end on an award show.
It just doesn't make sense. The last thing I want
to remember about the n b A is what happened
in the finals, not who is wearing what on the
red carpet. When they got most Valuable Player in the
third quarter of the Thursday night game, I just don't care.
That just another way to maybe sell commercials during a
TV spot. And it's it's because of this new format,
(03:13):
Jonas that I think we look at the Most Valuable
Player Award in a different light than we ever have before,
and I think that that is a detriment to James
Harden for the simple fact of jonas in previous years,
we would look back at the m v P when
it would be announced at some point during the NBA playoffs.
That would happen, I don't know, first round or maybe
(03:34):
in the conference semifinals. You would have a press conference
then with the player and that player would receive the trophy.
And in more times than not, the in the NBA,
if you're the most Valuable Player, you have taken your
team to the playoffs, So a lot of times you
would get the player receiving the award in front of
the home fans prior to a playoff game and everybody
(03:56):
would be, you know, going crazy. You'd have that pregame
ceremony and that's how we would find out who the
mv n B a m v P is and we
probably then got lost in the outcome of what those
teams did with the playoffs. But because of this NBA
award show, James Harden is now a victim. And how
how I feel he is going to be viewed as
(04:19):
an m v P because we saw what Lebron James
did for the Cavaliers in the playoffs the Pelicans, maybe
to Anthony Davis's benefit, we're eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals,
so we kind of forgot about what the playoff run
or what happened against the Warriors. Maybe we look at
what Anthony Davis did during the season. The only thing
(04:39):
we remember now about the Houston Rockets season wasn't about
the most wins, wasn't about how great James Harden's season was.
It was they were up three two on the Golden
State Warriors of the Western Conference Finals, lost Chris Paul
and then lost the series. And now you're gonna give
him an MVP award and you're saying, we'll wait a second.
He couldn't get his team to win a game six
(04:59):
or or to win a game seven. That should have
been fair to James Harden. And I'm not a fan
of a separate like, wait till the wait, wait till
the playoffs are done to give the m v P. No,
you have a regular season m VP and you have
your finals m VP. That's fine, it's good, it's it's
the timing of all of this that's gonna make James
Harden's m VP seemed watered down because of what they
didn't do in the playoffs. The whole thing is just awkward.
(05:21):
Which's gonna happen with Dwyanne Casey? I mean, if Dwayne
Casey wins Coach of the Year, it's just awkward. Nobody, no,
nobody takes it serious because of what you saw happen
and because of all that has happened in the NBA
since the last whistle and the clock ran out in
Game four the Finals, so much has happened that the awards,
it's like, it's just awkward. It's an awkward watch, Like
(05:45):
Dwyne Casey is gonna what except the award and uh
and be wearing a Pistons blazer when he does it
for a winning head coach for the former team that
he used to coach for that he was recently fired from.
But he's also winning. Like the whole thing is just awkward.
The same thing with James Harden. Like, I think the
NBA has gotta rethink how they're doing it, or at
least tell some of these teams, hey, if you're gonna
(06:06):
fire somebody, or if you're going to expose one of
these guys. Just remember their up for an award, So
can you wait until after we're done, Just wait until
Tuesday after the awards so we can make all these moves.
It just it doesn't make any sense to me, and
all anybody remembers James Harden's season was great, awesome, good
for him. All anybody remembers to your point is him
coming up short in the Western Conference finals and after
(06:28):
the playoff run Lebron James had. Nobody in the right
mind would tell you that James Harden is the most
valuable player of the league. But they want you to
remember that this is just for the regular season, and
we're going all the way back. If it's just for
the regular season, do it right after the regular season.
It's it's uncomfortable. It's two plus months since the NBA
regular season ended, and you mentioned the doing Casey move,
(06:51):
and we talked about James Harden. Heck, the Rookie of
the Year the last part of the regular season. All
we did was argue about well, I shouldn't say all
we did was argue about but somehow the NBA Rookie
of the Year award became an important award, and we
were arguing over Ben Simmons and Donovan Mitchell and who
should be the NBA's Rookie of the Year. Guess what
(07:11):
Jason Tatum is up for that as well. And now
after you look back of what's happened over the last
two months, really who seemed who was probably most important
at least during the playoffs. That's sure as hext team
that Jason Tatum was the most important of those three
players to his team. And so it is a it
is a bad spot for the NBA. And and last
year Jonas when Russell Westbrook ended up winning the m
(07:33):
v P, we could look back at he was a
one man show. Like the late announcement didn't hurt him.
This is now changing. I I think this is it's
a different feel. It changes the perception. I think when
James Harden and I agree with you will win the
m v P tonight, it makes it a different look
and it doesn't seem as important as what we would
(07:56):
usually do with most valuable players in the NBA, the
three biggest awards at this ceremony or what m v
P Coach of the Year in Rookie of the Year,
what do you say, all right, everybody who's about to
win was exposed as not being the best at their
job in the postseason, and that's what just took place.
The whole thing should be scrapped. Okay, the rookie of
(08:18):
the Year, if it goes to Ben Simmons or if
it goes to Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum was better than
both of them. In the postseason. Ben Simmons scored a
point in a game, not like a couple of points,
a single point in a playoff game. Donovan Mitchell's team
didn't go very far, and Dwayne Casey was fired after
the season because he got swept by Lebron. James and
(08:40):
James Harden came up short again. Lebron took his team
to the finals and played almost every minute of certain
games during the postseason run. Everyone, all the winners of
all three categories were exposed in the postseason. But we're
supposed to believe that they're the best at each of
those categories. Just it's dumb. The whole thing's dumb. It
doesn't make sense, even our you that if Anthony Davis
(09:01):
one tonight, which is probably not going to he would
get he gets a much bigger lift than James Harden
would because we forgot, you know, about what they did.
But also Jonas, we're forgetting. If Lebron James would with
the m v P tonight, it would give him five
and he would tie Michael Jordan's for five most valuable
players in his career. So every we talked about it
all the time, m J. Heck, we made fun of
(09:23):
it last week, m J versus Lebron and how that went,
like that would mean something to Lebron the other candidate,
and all of this. It really is going to burn
James Harden in the end because of what ended up happening.
And like, this is Major League Baseball saying, all right,
we're gonna announce our m v P and Cy Young
Award winners between the college football playoff games, you know,
(09:43):
two months after the fact. Why not why not wait
until late December and sort it all out, or hey,
Thanksgiving Day, we'll tell you who the m v P
is right after the Cowboys and Redskins Fox, why not
why not do something like that, because that's essentially the
NBA is doing. It's been over the season. Regular season
has been over since mid April. We're now at the
(10:04):
end of June. That's almost two and a half months
that we've waited for these awards. That's what you get
for baseball. Heck, right after the selection show, find out
who the m v P is of the NFL, Say
happy fourth of July, everybody, it's September eighteenth. Jonas unbelievable,
oh man, but yeah, it's it's it's crazy to think,
but James Harden is his m v P is gonna
(10:26):
end up being not as important as the others. They
have a stupid award show at the end of the
season two and a half months after we forgot that.
The Rockets ended up having the best record in in
the entire NBA, and then Harden was magnificent in the
regular Who's m seeing the event? Did they have an
m C Is it like the SPS where they have
like John Cena or Carrot Top or like Dan the
(10:48):
Del Taco guy that like m C s the SP.
I don't know who's hosting tonight? I am oh wait,
I do know. Anthony Anderson. Anthony Anderson is hosting tonight.
That is from Blackish, the comedian. I believe Dan come
on the TV show. Sorry so he is? Uh? He
is going to be hosting tonight's festivities in Santa Monica. Alright,

John Ramos. Glad to have you with us on this Monday.
NBA Awards are tonight. We'll find out on by Friday,
could find out sooner than that on Lebron James and
what he wants to do with his contract with the
Cleveland Cavaliers. Opt to interrupt out Carmelo Anthony with the
least surprising news over the weekend, opting in with his
contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder getting million dollars for
(12:38):
next season. That was not a super him, and it
won't be a surprise that the NBA's Most Valuable Player
Award tonight likely we'll be given to James Harden of
the Houston Rockets, even though Lebron James and Anthony Davis
our finalists. I think we all are. I don't know.
Last year there seemed to be more of a debate
(12:59):
with us Brooke and Harden being in the conversation, and
then Westbrook ends up winning the award, and I think
that we've got the same situation here with James Harden
ending getting very likely to end up getting the NBA's
Most Valuable Player award. So that's so far the NBA
off season should also note this, Jonas did you see
about Paul George? ESPN is going to be doing a
(13:19):
three part series on Paul George's off season. So very interesting. Yeah,
I didn't realize that it needed three separate days, but
that's what we're gonna get. That's that's code for we're
running out of ideas here. That's what happens on June.
The NBA, though, has provided us a lot of drama
(13:41):
during the playoffs and now into the off season. To
talk that a whole lot more from Sirius XM NBA
Radio and founder of hoops critic an NBA TV Brian
Geltziler Jones this year on the Dug gott Leap Show. Hey, Brian,
how you doing. I'm good, guys, we are doing well.
I'll just fill you in on what Jonas and I
spoke about it the top of the show, and that's
(14:01):
this NBA Awards show tonight where we're gonna find out
who's gonna win the m v P and we both
feel that it's going to be James Harden's award at
the end of the night. Do you feel that this
award is going to be looked at differently now knowing
what we know about what happened to the Rockets postseason,
because it seemed Brian all those other years when the
awards were handed out pretty early in the playoffs, we
(14:23):
weren't looking at playoff performance. Do you think the timing
of this award show changes anything about James Harden's m
v P. No, because the timing of the voting hasn't changed,
and this is the second year we've done it this way.
The voting is done at the end of the regular season.
It's not like the writers that vote are the media
guys a vote for this. Sure, Yet the benefit of
seeing what happened in the playoffs understands only a question
(14:44):
of the announcement. And listen, I think last year Westbrook
on the award, I think was looked at the same way.
And I think this you listen, it's not only hard
and performed poorly in the playoffs. I mean, they made
it the game seven of the conference finals and lost
of the eventual champions and lost our second best player
for those last two games. So listen, it was hard,
unbelievable in the playoffs. He wasn't but he had a
massive burden on I mean, and I thought he handled
(15:05):
things by and large pretty well, and I think it
was one of the better playoffs. He said. He certainly
had some really miserable ones in the past. So listen,
I think I think it was his word, a word
to lose from a very early stage of this season.
He did nothing to lose it matter if I could
probably get more to earn it. And I think, you know,
regardless of what we saw in the playoffs, I don't
think that perception changes even one iota going into tonight.
(15:26):
Brian Gell Tyler with us here on Fox Sports Radio
series x M NBA Radio, also the founder of Hoops
Critic dot Com. Guilt's Lebron James. There was a report
that came out that he doesn't want the circus quote
unquote this time. This time around feels a lot different
because he wasn't dealing with Golden State. There's a lot
of other factors that are weighing in on him, family,
(15:47):
all of that stuff. What do you think, What do
you think is paramount for Lebron James at this point
in his career? What is paramount on on his decision
and where he wants to go. It's jonas It's hard
to tell. I mean, I think one hand, I know
he enjoys playing in the NBA finals eight consecutive years
and nine overall, I you know, that is something he
(16:07):
does enjoy. But he's also always been a family oriented
guy and none of that has ever changed. And now
he is a situation with his son, Brownie, who's thirteen
years old, is enrolled to the school in l A
to play on a team with Derek Fisher's nephew, Kenyan
Martin's kid, Scotty Pippin's kid. There's you know, it's a
very interesting situation there. And I think he looks at
(16:28):
l A as being a place where his family would
love to live. I think his family would be like
to accurate as well. So in the end, I think
that's gonna be kind of what he's looking at now.
I begin, you know, find somebody to go to l
A with him and get a running buddy there. That
would be sure, that would be ideal for him, But
I think it's gonna be a different One of the
signs that it's going to be a very different criteria
in terms of what he decides on and what he's
(16:49):
using to decide is the fact that he doesn't want
to talk and Tony Show for everybody, listen, Lebron James
is he's a very bright guy. He's probably a little smarter.
He's not as smart as he thinks he is, but
he's very small. But he kind of find the figures.
He can look at each of these teams, know what
they need, identify himself without them having to make big
picture stone. In the end, listen, it's gonna be one
or two places. It's gonna be either l A or Cleveland.
(17:10):
I'm not buying any of the Philly stuff. That's an
ownership that's never spent into the luxury tax that is
a requirement for Lebrons. It's Miami cheap Dad on him
in fourteen in terms of of amsteing Mike Miller to
say fourteen million. So you have that situation in terms
of money. And with Houston, they're just they would have
to cut the roster too much and it would be
you know, and and Lebron really, I don't think he
wants to live in that city from all indications I hear.
(17:32):
So in the end, it's gonna be about his family,
and the question becomes is what the two big questions
are A what are the Calves willing to do to
upgrade that roster around him? And D is he willing
to go to l A? Without another star. Those are
the two larger questions to me regarded what's gonna happen
in Lebron's free agency. We get answers to those two
questions will be a pretty good idea where he's gonna go.
(17:52):
Brian geld Siler joining us here at the Doug Gatlup
Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan
Buyer in for Doug today. How long do you think
the Spurs are gonna take to to decide what to
do with Kauai Leonard. It's probably gonna go well into August,
but I don't think they're gonna break training cramp with
him on the team because Kauaia does not want to
be back in that locker room. And I think for
the Spurs, they'll tell him that they'll keep him all
(18:13):
year and try to stare him down a little bit
to see if they can get him to expand his list,
but in the end they understand that going to camp
with him is not gonna work for them. It's not
definitely not gonna work for Kauai, but it's not gonna
work for them, and if he doesn't show, they gotta
find them. And this whole thing starts to go on
and on and on, and then their leverage starts to
weaken as he doesn't show. So I don't know that
(18:35):
they want to risk that, but I do know this,
They're gonna wait to see what the Lakers do superstar
wise before they make up blue on trade in Kauai.
Because if the Lakers strike out here, if Lebron James,
of Paul George, if DeMarcus Cousins of none of those
three guys decide to choose the Lakers and their cap space,
san Antonio will go back to the Lakers and try
to pend him over a barrel a little bit to
make a deal. I think I think that they're looking
(18:57):
for a day they feel like with what Kauai is
laid on him in terms of the Lakers really being
the only destination he'd have an interest in resigning. And
they're looking at this situation as well, what do we
do to have to lean on Kauai to get him
to expand the list, and making him wait a little
bit is going to get him to expand the list.
So that's the other thing that happens here. So I
wouldn't expect anything to happen at any early stage with
(19:19):
the Spurs here, I think they take their time with
those who Kawai things, but they will end up moving
in this offseason. There's so many reports that are a
Brian Galtzeiler serious x MMBA radio with us here on
Fox Sports Radio. So many of these reports come out
every day, so you don't know which is accurate, which
is just somebody pulling the strings for somebody's camp. But
when the lead comes out and they say Kauhai Leonard
wants to go to the Lakers, and he narrows down
(19:41):
his list, and you've pointed out until the list grows,
they kind of shot themselves in the foot, right Kauai's
people by only saying I'll go to one team. At
least Kyrie Irving a year ago gave you know, a
few teams that he would consider. It's almost made things impossible.
And I saw another report that said, well, they don't
want to trade him to an Eastern confer and his team,
or or to a Western conference. Woman that that report
(20:05):
that I don't believe that reports to be true. So okay,
so are you buying just well, let me explain to
a little bit. First of all, you gotta Kauai. Kauai
does not have an entourage or a big group around them.
He has an agent that works for him. He has
his sister, his mom, and his uncle who he bound
to see decisions off with. You know, he's very close
(20:26):
with his uncle, is an extremely close adviser of his.
But understands something Jonas this is in his camp or
his people. This is him talking to his family and
him telling his family he's made a decision. He wants
to leave and go to the Lakers and Kauai. He
was it leaked by by his you know, his family.
Did they leak it at Kauai's behest? Absolutely do if
that information is out there right now, because a Kawhi
(20:48):
Leonard wants it out there. And I don't think he
shot himself in the foot at all, because Kauai is
fine to be traded anywhere they want to trade them
or in the other thing is that you can't forget
this possibility is opts for surgery on that quad pendant.
After all this time, get that done, sit to you
out and ended up going to the Lakers or for years,
You're at the end of the year. He's content to
play anywhere they put him as long as he'll have
the option to go to the Lakers the following year.
(21:09):
So he doesn't think he shot himself from the foot
at all. He's not even worried about it for him
right now, and he knows where he wants to get to.
He's determined to get there by whatever means possible. And
he looks Great Papovich and told him I wanta be
there anymore. I don't wanna be with you anymore, I
he does. They have turned him off sufficiently, so I
don't think he's done anything wrong to himself at all.
I think, if anything, he's put himself in an extremely
advantageous position because he does want out. The Spurs aren't
(21:32):
in a good position. The Spurs certainly have a tough
spotty here, and the Spurs run the risk of either
a getting nothing for a guy that off staff surgery
or be having to find a guy that doesn't show up.
Were se trade him somewhere, you don't want to trade
him for cents on the dollar. So if he was,
he's done. Essentially he hasn't done anything to himself. Is
that the San Antonio Spurs, who in his eyes horrifically
disrespected him and having players quit publicly questioned the veracity
(21:55):
of a very legitimate injury, having the Spurs medical staff,
who is diagnosed in the first place, cleared him to
play when his own personal doctors still have not yet
cleared him to play. They totally disagree with his own
doctors on the condition. Has a condition in his tendon.
It's not just with injury, it's a chronic condition that
he's to be managed and treated and that's to be
(22:16):
brought back to a hundred percent before you start to
put that strain on it again. That is what his
medical people are telling him. So the Spurs here and
their frustration and wanting him out there because Parker and
Ginobili were on their last run with the Spurs last season,
tried to totally smoke him out by embarrassing him, and
it really was a very bad look for them. It
was a bad look for Parker, it was a bad
look for Great Papa that's standing in front of in
(22:37):
front of a press corps talking about it. His quokieback
Kawai's family that it's his group, which almost was I
know for a fact from Kauai was taking a lot
in the same way that Lebron James took the Phil
Jackson posse combat the Spurs. The Spurs preached to Kauai
Leonard his entire early years in the league when he
won a Finals MVP. We have a certain way of
doing business, Okay. Our way of doing business is we
(22:59):
first of all acceptablame and the flet credit, and our
laundry stays in house, and we don't watch our laundry
in public. They violated both of those rules with Kawhi Leonard.
They put blame on him for their season not going
better by going public with this, and they went public
with something they've never gone public with anybody before. Keep
one thing in mind, guys, two other guys in the
Spurs era, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker both have one's
(23:19):
finals MVPs. Both have been injured at certain points in time.
Neither of them have ever had a teammate endorsed by
management go question the veracity of their injury publicly. The
Spurs are getting exactly what they deserve. Here here I'm
on Sirius x M NBA Radio, c M on NBA TV,
and find them on Twitter at Hoop's critic. We may
not agree about the heart and m v P. But
we love them anyway. Brian, Brian, have a good one,
(23:43):
all right, take care, Thanks guys. I love that guy
man that you know. What's the best thing though, I
was thinking, the best thing for us is that Kawhi
Leonards stays on the Spurs for a year. That's entertainment
the entire year. That's just if you cover the Spurs
in San Antonio, you won him back on that team
with all this drama. That is entertainment that lasts the
entire seat. He would be on the team. And I
don't know if you'd ever wear a jersey again. I
(24:04):
don't think you would suit up. There would be some
sort of non report thing with Kawhi Leonard. I don't
think that he wants to step foot And what I
would think would be interesting is if he ends up leaving,
is what that returned to San Antonio is like, almost
like when Kevin Durant. We were so waiting for the
Kevin Durant returned to Oklahoma City on what this would
(24:26):
be with Kawai Leonard for a fan base that we
know how loyal the Spurs fan base is, but to
see how they would react with him if he is
in a different uniform. It's like when the fans in
Oklahoma City dressed up his cupcakes. Will show you, Um,
you're forty eight and you're wearing a cupcake on your head.
What do you mean you'll show me? You already showed
your family? Are you out of your mind? All right?
(24:46):
Dan Buyer Jonas knocks in for Doug gott Leep here
on Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next, there is a
growing trend in the world of football. It's not a
good one. We'll tell you what that is. Coming up
next here on fs ARE. But for all the latest
from around the world of sports, it's step Carson, Hello, gentlemen,
to big matches going on right now on the pitch
in the World Cup. Action on Fox TV. Morocco taking
(25:07):
on Spain. That's not it at one all, seventy third
minute and that is on FS one actually on Fox.
It's a one nil lead for Portugal over Iran seventy
two minute of play. Earlier today at Uruguay handed host
country Russia their first lost three nil. Also in Group A,
Saudi Arabia edge Egypt to one on the Diamonds right now,
(25:28):
no score in Detroit Athletics taking on the Tigers there
in the bottom of the second inning. That's in Edwin
Jackson Jordan's Zimmerman matchup. In case you're wondering. Yankees, by
the way, made it official today they placed Gary Sanchez
on the ten day DL with a strained right cooin.
NBA news the Nightets will decline the option on Nicola Yokich.
They will sign him to a five year, one D
(25:49):
forty six million dollar max deal. And as you mentioned,
the NBA Awards coming up tonight, nine Eastern Although one
of the biggest stars, the biggest star in fact in
the NBA and one of the NBA and VP finalist,
Lebron James is not expected to attend. Guys. Maybe he's
got dinner plans in brent Wood. I think he just
(26:10):
doesn't want the camera on him when he doesn't win,
you know, the split screen. Think that might be uncomfortable.
You know, just listen, if Dwayne Casey can show up,
you guys can manage to show up, all right, You
want to talk about uncomfortable? It is Dayne Casey's gonna
be there as far as I know. I think it'd
be great if he was there. Don't you think it'd
be fun? To see him win, and it's kind of
a shine to his his old team. Man, see what
(26:33):
see what you let go here? Yes, if he took
the award and threw it at the Raptors delegation in
the crowd, that would be you know, just put it now,
that's what do you do? You take the trophy, walk
by their table, put it down right on the table,
and then walk over to the pistons. That's yeah, that's
how you show him up. The only thing to make
that watchable. That events not a big awards. You're not
(26:56):
looking forward to see who the most improved player. I
just I don't know, Like, what is it? It's just
so weird, Like this is a seat regular season award
you're giving away two months later. Like nobody celebrates birthdays
two months afterwards. Just do right after the season. I
don't understand. My birthday fell on a Wednesday, so we're
going to do it on the saturdays later. Yeah, we
(27:19):
appreciate it. Deb there is This is the Doug gottlib Show.
By the way, he's Jonas Knocks, I'm Dan Buyer. John
Ramos is here as well, hanging out. There has been
some movement to the TV sort of things for NFL officials.
Another full time referee, Jeene Sterator stepping down. So now
you've got Terry McCauley moving on for the NFL. We
(27:39):
know that ed hockey lee is Is is off to
other ventures in his careers. He'll no longer be a
full time referee. Jeff Triplet retiring as well. These guys
going to TV Jonas. But the NFL losing a bunch
of referees, with Sterator being the latest over the weekend.
Almost of NFL refs have retired in one offseason. You
(28:01):
think that's a coincidence. It's not like they hate the game. Uh.
Sterritor is going to CBS. Uh. The two of the
other of three guys are also going to networks, one
to NBC, another to Monday Night Football. And it's not
like these guys aren't good at their jobs. Territory was
just just work the Super Bowl and all these guys
one out. It's that it's one of the worst jobs
(28:22):
in sports. I was thinking about this. If it whatever
your job is, imagine walking in and knowing that no
matter how will you do and how well you perform,
half the place is gonna hate your guts afterwards because
if you make a good call, you're you're screwing one
team over at least, so at least half the place
is always gonna be unhappy with you. And with the
(28:44):
added pressure of replay targeting, what's a catch, what's not
a catch, what you can challenge, what you can't challenge,
and now sports gambling being thrown in, these guys don't
want to be around. They don't want to deal with
it anymore. It's miserable. Brian Regan, the comedian, does this
bit on how the worst job in the world is
the baggage handling people at the airport because no one
(29:07):
walks in there happy like nobody's walking into the baggage
office because their bags are there to give the heads up.
It's the it's but the the NFL referees are similar
to the fact as well. Jonas that with everything that
you talked about of new being in it's difficult to
decipher these guys are Heck, they did what John Gruden did,
got paid this stick, stay close to the game and
(29:29):
go to a TV network without the pressure of calling
it and probably getting and getting paid more than they
would of having to go from week to week. Two different,
two different cities in doing this, Terry McAuley going to NBC,
Jeff Triplet's the one that's um going to ESPN with
steratory at CBS. But it's a much better gig for
these guys to do TV than to be criticized on
(29:52):
rules that are so subjective as they're happening. And you know,
I've I've argued this, and I've said this, and I
even said this last week. Fox did a great thing
with Mike Pereiro. But Fox was the first team to
put a referee in a booth. Golf had done it
for so long because let's be honest, the rules of
golf aren't easy. You don't know on what you can move,
(30:13):
when you can touch this, what you gotta do with
your club, So they would have a rules analysts there
to tell you on is this a rule broken or not.
That's what it's gotten to the NFL, where like we
need to have somebody there because we have no idea
what we're watching because things are so confusing, and that
isn't a good thing for the National Football I've always
said that if the stress outweighs a success and anything,
(30:35):
you've got to get the hell out of there, Like
if you're if you're always stressed out when you're around
somebody or you're at a job, you've got to go.
And that's where it's become for these guys. It's just
not worth it anymore. I mean, these are all recognizable faces.
These are all uh, guys that you know, guys that
you've seen work that do a pretty good job. And
they're all saying at the same time, Yeah, this just
(30:58):
doesn't work for me anymore. You know, I don't want
to deal with it. Praira talked about why Dean Blandino
left and Preira said, look um, you can go do
another job and explain why calls are made and why
things are happening and you can make a nice living,
or you can determine what is going on and what's
(31:18):
happening and have half the country hate your guts every
single week. Who who wants that? Like, nobody, nobody wants that.
It's I think it's it's one of the worst jobs
that there is. And because these guys have options now
and because Mike Praira has turned this in to something
you can do for a living and be very good
at and it's important and it helps out. I think
when those guys chime in outside of Mike Carry was
(31:41):
a disaster. I mean, he was awful Rustin. You know
what's you're surprising when you watch Jerry Austen up. First
of all, Um, I don't know how they were able
to get the makeup to cover the bolts in his
neck fall. I don't know how they did. It's really
an admirable job what they were able to do with
r Austin. But when when he was in the booth,
(32:04):
didn't it always seem like Gruden hated his guts. It
always seemed like Gruden didn't want him there. You know,
he just got hired by the Raiders to work with
John Gruden. Yeah, they just hired him. And I always
thought those two guys hated each other so much. For
what I know, But I just think there's options out
there and they don't want to deal with the grind anymore.
And when gambling gets introduced, how many of those guys
(32:26):
want to hear every single week? Huh, that's why you
made the call because you got money on the game too. Like,
I'm not Tim donnihe I'm just trying to do my job. Jeff,
Jeff Triplet. By the way, Jeff Triplet always seemed annoyed
having to call a penalty if you know who I'm talking,
And I do think that football fans know who the
revs are. Jeff Triplet always seemed annoyed that that, like
(32:50):
I gotta do this. Gosh, all right, we got a
holding on offense. So I'm curious on how that is
going to translate to tell division. The fact is, and
Alex Marvez said it that. He said it on This
Network yesterday with Brian No and Andy Ferman of saying,
the NFL doesn't like these faces of people knowing who
(33:12):
the refs are. They don't like Ed Hockey league showing
his guns and Gene Stereotor bringing out the index card.
They don't think that that is good for the league.
And so the NFL is be careful what you wish for,
because all I know is every other sport, if you
know the umpire, if you you know, if you know
who they are, it's usually a bad thing. In the NFL.
(33:34):
For some of the guys, it was good. It was
good like with with Ed Hockey, Like alright, Ed Hockey,
Ley has got my game. I love Terry McAuley. He
reped the Seahawks super Bowl win. So I've always been
a big Terry McAuley guy, Like, all right, Terry McCauley.
But the NFL is the only place we actually had
a positive review of some of the officials with the fans.
All the other ones homeplate umpires in baseball, the only
ones you know are the ones that that are awful.
(33:55):
And then the same thing with the NBA. What that
may be Rome boogery penalties a game. I can't believe
John's got drops for a ref call. Oh my god,
he's got an old page. Um, what was the the
when you think of the Naked Gun, the movie The
Naked Gun, what's the one thing you think of when
(34:16):
he's the ump and he's doing the hip gyrations and
all of that. Leslie like I like a little bit
of flare with with it. I like I like spice.
And remember Mike Carey used to do this. He was
terrible in the booth, but he used to do this.
It would he would make the call and he would
go first down and he'd pause or or he'd go, uh,
(34:36):
a personal foul, and he'd paused before he pointed in
one direction or the other. So you're almost like oh,
which way is he going? Janga janga? And then he
would and after people would get piste off because it
was an intensible, intentionable delay, like this pregnant pause in
his pose when he was announcing which side it was
going against. I like, that's a little personality. I'm wrong
(34:58):
with that. It's a rico a lot. So one of
the great scenes Summer's here, guys, which means it's how
to get to the ballpark, but without working, without a
working car battery, you're gonna be watching from the couch. Luckily,
Auto Zone offers free battery testing, so you could be
a part of the action. With free services from auto Zone,
you can't lose Get in the zone Auto Zone. Dan Buyer,
(35:19):
Jonas Oxen for Doug Gottlieb here on Fox Sports Radio.
Get Dan on Twitter at Dan Buyer on Fox you
can find me at d Jonas Knox coming up next.
There is something that is a big deal and something
that's a little deal, and something that's not a big
deal at all. I'll tell you what that is next
here alongside Dan Buyer here on Fox Sports Radio. I'm
(35:43):
Dan Buyer, that's Jonas Knox. He is John Ramos. As
we are in for Doug today. You know Dan car

used car. Visit True Car to enjoy a more competent
(36:06):
car buying experience. Let's play a game. This is game
time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Deb Carson is
with us today. Hello Deb, Hello Dan, Hello Jonas, And uh,
the game today is big Deal, Little Deal, No Deal? Alright,
(36:28):
alrighty gents. Well, Sports Illustrated leaked to document, they say,
is the script to a video the Lakers will use
during their pitch to Paul George Big Deal, little little
Deal or no Deal. I saw the script and uh,
it is bad. It's atrocious. So I would have to
say that this is no deal because it's so cheesy
(36:52):
and corny and keeps them talking about Palmdale, which just
closed their Famous Dave's. So it's just to me it's
a no deal. It's no deal. I think it's very lame.
Why you like famous Daves? Yeah? Sure, why not? That's
very expensive? Um, I think this is a little deal
only because all this stuff didn't work the last time
you tried to court free agents. You couldn't get Greg Monroe,
(37:16):
you couldn't get LaMarcus Aldridge, you couldn't get all these
other free agents that rolled through because you had all
these props, like you were Gallagher the comic on stage
and you were showing them off to everybody. So why
are you still trying to do it? I thought he
was he was a die hard Laker fan and it
was a shoein. Why do you need to sell him
on palm Dale? Why why does this need to happen?
I don't get it talked about how yeah, when he
(37:38):
was a kid growing up in Palmdale, he was dreaming,
But the Lakers were dreaming of his arrival too, and
they were building it. Sounds like a movie I don't
want to see, just like Uncle Drew. And yes, the
voiceover artist was told it should be less Morgan Freeman,
Denzel Washington more, Jamie Fox. Oh that's good. Moving on.
Kyrie Irving told reporters, quote, go ahead, had to do
(38:00):
what you do. He wanted to wear the number. Let
him wear the number. It doesn't matter. End quote when
asked about Colin Sexton wearing his old number two with
the Cavaliers. Big deal, little deal, No deal, Jonas, no deal.
I don't think it's just this is I mean, he
wants to wear the jersey. Do you think he's trolling?
Do you think he's trying to troll Kyrie Irving? Um? No,
(38:23):
I don't think so. I don't think that. I think
it's just that the Calves let him have it. So
I would say it's a little deal. You know, when
you look at the Calves history, I think of Nance,
Mark Price and Brad Doherty and they all have their
numbers retired. I don't know if I'm going I'm just
gonna think of the Calves is just Lebron's team. So
(38:44):
you know, Kyrie may have another chance somewhere else. Only
played six seasons there, but may have another chance somewhere
else to get his jersey retired. So I say a
little deal, you know there, Maybe there's now that I
think about it, there's been so many number twenty ones
on the Cubs since Sammy Sosa. You would think of
all the guys they would retire his jersey would be
Sammy Sosa. But they're so disgraced, even though they were
good with all the money he brought in while he
(39:05):
was doing his steroids allegedly and hitting home runs. They
will give it to anybody. I mean, they might have
to twenty ones on the team at this point. I
have no idea. That's how much they've tried to distance
himself from Sammy Sosa Well. Moving on to the NFL,
Julian Edelman is vigorously appealing as four games suspension for
performance enhancing drugs, focusing on two things, one the NFL
(39:25):
not being able to identify the substance and to the
mishandling of Edelman's test sample. Big deal, little deal, no deal.
I would like to say it's a big deal, but
I think it's gonna end up being a no deal
because I don't think that the NFL cares if they
don't know what it is. All that knows that the
levels were this, and you're gonna get that. Julian Edelman.
I think it's a big deal because I know an
(39:47):
m m A. In mixed martial arts, at least five
times in the last year guys have appealed a positive
test for U a PD or testing positive or something
and it turns out that they were right. They got
contaminated substances from either the nutrition shop they bought it from, uh,
(40:07):
the the wholesale er. There was contamination in the bins
and it strikes a positive test. I think it's a
big deal. This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show,
brought to you by Farmers Protecting your Home Team. Farmers
customizable home insurance packages offer coverage options you can tailor
(40:28):
for your home turf. At Farmers we know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing. Or to discover
home coverage options and more. At Farmers dot com, we
are Do you think it gets overturned for Edelman? I
don't think it. No, I don't think so. Not with
the NFL, and it may not be the worst thing
(40:48):
for it seems like the Patriots to rest the guy early.
Oh there's Johnny Ramos as well. There it is, all right, glad,
have you a log on this Monday? It's awards season,
NBA handing theirs out tonight. I'm sorry, I I just
when James Harden gets the m v P. I know
(41:08):
he had a great regular season. I just think it's
unfair to him that now we're going to look at
the award tonight. It's almost like when we look back
at the Steve Nash m v P Awards and you say, oh,
Shot could have done it, and you said, what did
Steve Nash do for the sons and leading them? It's
an m v P that maybe we just don't think
is the same as other m v ps. And I
(41:30):
even think last year with Russell Westbrook doesn't even get
close and nearly enough of the flat that James Harden
would get even though James Harden's team went much farther
in the playoffs. Last year, we just look at it
was a one man show for Westbrook. But we'll find
out tonight if it's Harden, Lebron or Anthony Davis with
the Most Valuable Player. It's just dumb, man. If you
and your if you decide you and your fiance don't
(41:53):
want to get married, but you still have the wedding,
isn't that weird? That's that's what's happening here. Like you've
deter rman that anything that they've done in the regular
season is no longer relevant because when it came to
the postseason, the coach of the Year got fired. The
Rookies of the Year got outperformed by another rookie, and
the m v P got outplayed by another player multiple
(42:15):
players during the playoffs, but we're gonna ward him anyways.
I just said, it's just weird. The whole thing is uncomfortable.
I don't know why they why they thought this was
a good idea until you there is something too I like.
I wish the Pro Bowl was the last event in
the NFL season. I liked it. That's what we grew
up on, so I was always used to watching the
Pro Bowl. It was in Hawaii. It was fun. Full disclosure,
(42:36):
I taped Pro Bowls back in my bowl. That says
a f C versus NFC. By the way, did you
see the Pro Bowl almost doubled the ratings of the
NBA Draft. Really everybody out there going, oh, no, man,
the NI Draft so awesome. Man, it's so cool. Not really,
(42:58):
not a civil explanation, Fox Sports Radio. It took all
of That's what it was. But so I'm old school.
I wish the Pro Bowl was at the end of
the season. But I do understand why the NFL didn't
want the Pro Bowl to finish the season. You want
to leave on a high note. This isn't leaving on
(43:18):
a high note for the NBA. It just isn't. And
I know the NFL awards come after the season's over,
and I get all that, but nobody thinks about the
NFL awards like they're as important, maybe as NBA awards.
NBA awards feel like they're more important, don't they? Or
am I just crazy? I feel like an NBA MVP
they make much more of a deal and a production
(43:40):
out of it. And maybe it's the individuality of the NBA,
and it's and the pettiness of the league, and it's
about superstars more so than in the NFL. I just think,
to end your season and tie a bow with it
with a bunch of awards going to a coach who
who got fired already, a guy who got outplayed, and
a rookie you scored a single point in a playoff game.
(44:03):
It's just a bad look. Yeah. And here's another secret
about the NFL. When they vote for the m v P,
because it's voted on by the Associated Press, the Associated
Press actually reveals their all NFL team at the end
of the regular season, and ten out of the last
ten times the m v P has been on the
first team, So if you have like multiple quarterbacks going
for the award, it's usually going to be the first
team quarterback. This past year a little different because Todd
(44:25):
Gurley was in the conversation as he was a first
team running back as well. But yeah, so the NFL's
MVP is almost kind of even revealed a little bit
early with the n b A. I think it. I
think it's a big legacy play when we compare Lebron
and Michael Jordan of course got four. We're looking at
it that at that at that way, I'm not sure
in the NFL if it is as much of a
(44:47):
of a legacy play as well. You know what the
NBA is. In Major League Baseball, it's all about stats, right,
everybody's into the numbers. Stats are so historic. It's why
you get these seam heads that don't want the regular
season warton in Major League Baseball, even though it makes
total sense and players would be on board. Anthony Rizzo
even said I would take a pay cut if they
(45:08):
would shorten the season. It makes all the sense in
the world. But because you've got seam heads who look
at it from such a such a place of don't
mess with our game, don't mess with our stats spot.
They don't want to welcome in an idea that may
be new and may make a lot of sense, even
though they realize and they acknowledge that the numbers have slipped.
(45:29):
The attendance is down in a lot of places, and
it's way too much baseball and it takes way too
long for the NBA. You know what Their version of
their stat protecting is awards. They love the awards, m
VPS titles, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year,
six Man of the Year. They love the awards and
you can't messle them. So they try and put them
(45:50):
on this stage. But they don't want to look at
the idea of yeah, this just doesn't make sense to
do at the end of the season. Okay. It's like
you go out to a restaurant and they say, all right,
you got want to see the dessert menu? Yeah, why not?
And on it is Ajax and gefelda fish. Nobody wants that. Okay,
where's the cake, where's the pudding? Get out of here
with this. It's it's such a perception as reality. I know.
(46:12):
Brian Geltziler when he joined US earlier it was saying, no,
Harden hat a great playoffs and and even when Chris
Paul was outplayed, well, I don't think most people look
at it like that. I think they look at it
as like the Houston Rockets didn't beat the Golden State
Warriors and Chris Paul was hurt, so Harden wasn't enough
to carry in. Perception is reality, and that's why it's
(46:33):
not fair to James Harden. But that's what the NBA
has has made this now with this award being presented
at this time and no other m v P, whether
it be Steve Nash, you I mentioned, um, you know,
Kevin Garnett when the Timberwolves made their their running two
thousand four other guys, none of them had to deal
with Russell Westbrook last year even didn't have to deal
with this backlash. James Harden is going to have to
(46:55):
deal with. The narrative doesn't have to be real, okay,
but what is is that there is a narrative, and
the narrative is for two years in a row. When
it came to the biggest spot of the season, James
Harden came up short period. Like you can you can
try and say No, there's a bunch of qualifiers to
be thrown in there. That's not really to to If
(47:16):
you were to ask an NBA fan when you think
James Harden, what do you think? They don't think man
best player in the league during the regular season. They
think I can't win the big yep. I can't. Sorry,
that's just a reality. Last year, James Harden finished second
in the m v P voting to Russell Westbrook. The
guy that finished third Kawai Leonard, who's got his own
situation with the San Antonio Spurs happening. We mentioned Brian
(47:38):
geltz Adler's name, The Sirius XM radio host and the
guy you can see on NBA TV joined us earlier
to talk about Kauai situation with his current and probably
soon to be former team, The San Antonio Spurs. First
reached to Kawhi Leonard his entire early years in the
league when he won the finals MVP. We have a
certain way of doing business, Okay, a way of doing
(48:00):
business is we first of all, accept blame and the
flect credit, and our laundry stays in house and we
don't watch our laundry in public. They violated both of
those rules with Kawhi Leonard, they put blame on him
for their season not going better by going public with this,
and they went public with something they've never gone public
with anybody before. Keep one thing of mind, guys. Two
other guys in the Spurs era, Tim Duncan and Tony
(48:21):
Parker both have one finals MVPs. Both have been injured
at certain points in time. Neither of them have ever
had a teammate endorsed by management go question the veracity
of their injury publicly. The Spurs are getting exactly what
they deserve here. Wow. I then since Brian's not with us,
I completely disagree. Yeah, that's I. I don't I don't
look at it that way. As I we talked about
(48:41):
this last week. Tony Parker, I think was speaking as
a veteran who had zero rodeos or maybe one rodeo left,
and the same thing with Monto Genoble, who's thought about
retirement over the last three years. Maybe the Spurs didn't
go out and shoot down what Monto Genoble and Tony
Parker were saying, but they didn't need a pushing from
the organization to go out and say what they had
to say. They're veterans who have been with the organization
for ten fifteen plus years with the likes of Tim Duncan,
(49:05):
and this is different than they've ever experienced. Or I
have no problem with them speaking. You posed a question
to me last week when we were doing the show,
and you said, whose fault is it? If you had
to put blame on somebody, either the Spurs or Kawhi Leonard,
whose fault would it be? And I didn't really think
about it because I try not to do the blame game,
except if there's a counter to somebody getting the blame.
Like I think the fact that the surrounding pieces are
(49:28):
getting the blame for Lebron james struggle in the playoffs,
I think that's a joke. He's the reason the surrounding
pieces are there, so he deserves equal blame. But I
try not to make a blame on on a certain
subject in sports because sometimes people just don't want to
play on a team or they want away from a
team and whatever. That's just life. But the more I
thought about it, if you were to ask me initially
over again, my gut react, my initial reaction would be, yeah,
(49:52):
you know, I'm gonna side with Kawhi Leonard on this.
Based on his reputation, He's never been a pain in
the ass. He's always been seemingly a good teammate. He
doesn't like drama, doesn't cause trouble. I would side with
Kawhi Leonard based on reputation, And the more I thought
about it, it's like, hold on a second. The Spurs
have been the best run organization in the NBA for
(50:13):
about two decades now, all of a sudden, they don't
know how to do things anymore. Like all of a sudden,
it's them that's not able to figure out how to
handle a superstar. It's like when the when the Malcolm
Butler Bill Bill Belichick fiasco happened at the Super Bowl,
everybody blaming Belichick. I said, wait, hold on a second,
All of a sudden, the greatest coach in the history
(50:34):
of the league just forgot how to manage personnel right
before the Super Bowl. It seems a little far fetched.
And if the more I look at it, the more
I think, and you're hearing other players and former Spurs
come out and defend their organization, which makes sense in
its own But the more I think about it, we're
only saying that Kawuahi Leonard is in the right here
based on his reputation. We're not factoring in the Spurs
(50:57):
have had a longer reputation of success in the NBA.
And it's a little puzzling to me why everybody is
signing with Kauai here. It's bizarre. I I don't get
it either. And I think that even the last year
with the LaMarcus Aldrid situation, which I think is a
very very important piece to what is happening with Kawai Leonard,
is that LaMarcus Aldridge wasn't happy, rumored to want out,
so Gregg Popovitch changed what they were doing in San
(51:20):
Antonio to make it work for LaMarcus Aldridge and la
Marcus Aldridge is having his best or had his best
season as a Spur. So the Spurs actually showed flexibility
and the ability to look in the mirror and say,
you know what, maybe we've we've had this great run,
Maybe I've got to do a little something different here.
And that's what I think also supports their case with
(51:42):
Kawhi Leonard is heck they've they've they've had him in
camp from the get go when they when they ended
up making the trade with the Pacers to to bring
in Kauai leonard On on Draft night and have that
piece to be a part of the organization. He's been
through rodeos with them, so he knows how the organization works.
And I think that they felt that they had a
better opportunity to even talk it through with him than
(52:03):
they did with La Marcus Alderd. So I don't blame
the San Antonio Spurs for really any of this. It's
it's it seems to be Kauai and it seems to
be the parties that are around him. Dan Buyer Jonas

NBA awards Tonight's free agency beginning next week. Sandwiched in between,
we'll find out if players are opting in or out
(54:59):
of their tracks as Lebron James has a decision to
make by Friday whether he wants to opt in with
the Cavaliers or opt out of his contract and become
a free agent. People think free agency begins um on
Sunday of the NBA July one, but Lebron's decision actually
has to come before Friday or come by Friday on
(55:19):
whether he wants to opt in or opt out of
his contract and and again be a free agent. So
those are just some of the and then the officist
official deals can't become official until the new league year
starts on July six, So those are just some important
dates people may want to want to think about as
the as NBA free agency begins. Now you can gamble
(55:39):
on where he ends up. I wonder is there a
prop bet out there if you go to a casino
anywhere in the country, is there a prop bet on
whether or not Jim Gray is gonna ask him? Are
you still a nail fighter scaring his decision? You think
that's gonna happen again? O, man, I'm not sing by Jim.
You'll have to look at the futures. And I will
say this just quickly on Lebron's my Ammy heat decision.
(56:01):
I have seen that be replayed lately as we're waiting
for Lebron. The nervous head nod of trying to reassure
himself that he made the right decision is one of
the most underrated things. And like when you when he goes,
I'm going to take my talent to play for the
Miami Heat. Then he nods his head really quickly to
like try to convince himself that he was making the
(56:24):
right decision, knowing that all of Cleveland was in an uproar.
It was just rip on it all you want. It
was amazing TV and so much to look into eight
years later. So it got us to thinking, you know,
we're all about making history, right Dan, you want to
be we want to be historical. And you know, we
were thinking about, you know what nobody's ever done in
the history of radio. Nobody's ever played Lebron James Clue.
(56:54):
Nobody's ever played Lebron James Clue. And we said, well,
somebody's got to do it. So we're going to be
the first ones to do it. This will be stolen
by other shows if it doesn't stink. By the way,
I think John Ramos didn't edit the beginning of the music,
and I started to edit it and forgot to clean
off the front part. That's why it sounded so herky jerky.
(57:15):
Here's here's the problem. Because we're the first ones to go,
we're gonna work out all the kinks during the segment
and the next time somebody and when they steal this,
it's gonna go perfectly and they're gonna get all the credit.
They're really a bunch of b s, all right. So, Dan,
it's the Lebron James Clue game. We've got three different categories.
Here's how the old clue game worked. You had to
guess who did the crime with what weapon and where
(57:40):
in the house. So for example, I thought it was
Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the library. That's an example.
So we thought, how do we turn this into a
Lebron James clue game? What if we did who meaning
which team does he go to? When? Meaning which day
of the week is it announced? And how meaning how
(58:02):
does he do it? Because he's done in a different
way TV, He's writ and call him yep. There there
are a lot of different options for Lebron James, and
the five of us will try to choose those options. Myself,
Jonas Knox, John Romos, our executive producer Ryan Music, and
our anchor Deb Carson all playing Lebron James Clue today
(58:22):
here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports races
this song, this is the theme from the Clue movie.
I can't believe spiring the one and only Martin mull Yeah. So, Dan,
while you're molling that over, let's let's get it started here, Dan.
So we are going to spin the wheel, and this
(58:43):
wheel will tell us who gets to begin each category,
which of the five of us gets to start the game,
and then we will we will reveal the order. Everybody
is being designated a sound drop that will signal that
it is their turn. Right, So we will spin the wheel.
This is to determine who, meaning which team does Lebron
(59:04):
James choose to go to. Let's spin that wheel, man,
good spin? Yeah, first stop? All right, Johnny, you get
first pick who John who I'm gonna say it's who
(59:28):
is the seventy sixerstering? I'm gonna say a Monday Sorry, yeah, no, no, no,
you don't go again. Yeah, that's all right. The second
time we do this is gonna be so good. All right,
(59:50):
we were all in the same meeting. Why is there
a wheel? All right? We just took a sound crowds,
the wheel is already been spun. Who's next, John? Okay,
all right, I am going to take Vegas feels as
the likely destination. I am going to take the Lakers
(01:00:11):
for Lebron James's team next season. I'm good now, all right,
next up, de Carson? Is that deb or? Jeff? What
do you do that? It's unbelievable, I say, despite the
(01:00:34):
fact that there's only one ball, why not let's send
him to the Rockets play with some friends. It's the
only way he can compete with the Golden State dynasty. Interesting,
all right, who goes next? Jonas ran great? Have I turned?
(01:00:54):
Maybe give me the Cleveland Cavaliers. I think he looks around.
He says, there's not really a perfect fit anywhere. Why
ruin all of the good times I've had in Cleveland.
I think Lebron James stays in Cleveland with the Cavaliers,
and that means Ryan Music. I'm not a music guy.
(01:01:17):
I will get the Boston Celtics because, hey, you know what,
He's going to reach out to Kyrie Bury, the hatchet
b teammates once again. They're the only team who could
beat the Warriors. So why not just make that that
friendship happen once again? All right, So, now Dan, we've
all determined who will get Lebron James now we've got
to determine when will Lebron make his decision, what day
(01:01:41):
of the week will it be made, So let's spin
the wheel to find out who goes for us. All Right,
I am going to go Thursday on this one. Uh
he I was gonna say Friday, so everybody would have
(01:02:03):
the weekend to mull it over. But I say Thursday.
That way, it is the big topic. Everybody's talking about Lebron.
It's all about Lebron. Alright, yeah, maybe, all right, this
is a little self serving on my part. I'm gonna
go Friday. Normally, big stories, they do the Friday news
dump if you're trying to hide something. But I think
he is so concerned that I'm not going to have
(01:02:25):
anything to talk about on my overnight show that he
drops the news on Friday. I say, Lebron James makes
his decision on a Friday. I'm not a music guy.
I'm gonna go with Wednesday. He's gonna let the drama
build up through Monday Tuesday, drop it right in the
middle of the week, so that way he knows all
day Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, going into the weekend, it's all
(01:02:46):
about him. So as we got Thursday, Friday, and Tuesday
off the board. Wednesday, I'm sorry, Wednesday off the board.
Oh man, ah, jeez, I was gonna look up some
history here. I want something I want I want some
data on my side. Okay, Lebron James has made his
(01:03:11):
decisions previously later in the week, so he's gonna switch
it up here, give me Tuesday. That's good Dean's tag,
as we say in Germany, Tuesday for Lebron James. I
like Friday, guys, Sorry, gone John. I will take Monday
(01:03:32):
on the Monday because I think it's the first day
of the week. You want to get get things going
slow newsday, Let's rocket on a Monday. So Monday for
Lebron James. Now now, so now we have all determined
the who, we've all determined when, and now we've got
to determine the howl. Right, we've got to determine the how,
and that is, do we want to do that right here? Yeah,
(01:03:56):
let's do it right here. Let's do it right here,
because we've got to sort this out because we've got
to We've gotta break it down. So let's spin that
wheel and figure out I mean, he's done in two
different ways what he's made his original decision. Who goes from?
Who goes? Don't? Oh? We go Wow. I would love
(01:04:20):
to say, like People Magazine, I would love to say
in a TV show, but Lebron James loves his Instagram.
Give me the old I g for lb J. I'm
not a music guy. This is tough. We know he's
(01:04:44):
all about being on TV making those fancy little sit
down interviews. But I'm actually gonna go with Twitter because
he's gonna do it on the uninterrupted. Oh okay, interesting,
that's good. That's actually probably spot on now think about it.
I'm gonna go with the written piece because everybody the
(01:05:06):
uh the athletic gets at the what's the other one
that Kevin Durant did it on players tribute? That seems
to be the way to go nowadays. I love the
written piece for Lebron James. Right, who's next? Okay, John
sol took mine. He already did TV. We have we
have not done Yeah, we haven't done TV. It hasn't
been taken yet. Yeah, but Lebron's done that already. So
(01:05:29):
UM tell you what. I'm gonna go radio because Lebron
has not yet added a radio vehicle or audio vehicle
to his repertoire within his media empire. So he's going
to launch a radio show or a podcast, Box Sports
radioe w l b G. All right, my turn. Okay,
(01:05:53):
I will take the obvious, even though I'm not confident
in this pick at all, but I will take television.
I think he's gonna do it on TV. That's how
he makes his decision. All alright, Daniel, we've all we've
got it. We have got the picks in we break
them down. Yeah, that's what we've got to do. We've
got to see who's got what with Lebron James in
our clue game got off to a rocky start with
(01:06:15):
that music in the beginning. John, Actually, let's quickly here
the beginning music. This is wait that happens to the
best of them. Oh man uh Dan Buyer Jonas knocks
in for Doug Gottlieb here on Fox Sports Radio coming
(01:06:37):
up next here. So do we want to reveal how
this went down? Let's let's recap and we'll look at
what we've each got for a setup and who's most
likely to have their situation play out? All right, the
most comprehensive Lebron James free agency breakdown in the history
of sports radio. That is coming up next for you
here on fs ARE. But for all the latest, it's Carson. Well,
since we were talking NBA, let's stick to that. Then
(01:06:59):
the awards will be held tonight, nine eastern on t
n T. Will Lebron be the m v P or
will it be favorite James Harden? Anthony Davis also up
for it, Rookie of the Year, the finalist Donovan Mitchell,
Ben Simmons, Jason Tatum, and of course all eyes on
the Coach of the Year to see if fired Raptors
coach Dwayne Casey now with Detroit will win the award
and beat out Quinn Snyder of Utah or Boston's Brad Stevens.
(01:07:23):
In baseball action right now, John Hicks RBI single has
given the Tigers a one nothing lead over the A's.
There the bottom of the fifth inning, Yankees plays Gary
Sanchez on the ten day deal with a strained right groin.
But all eyes of course on the World Cup and
guys just want to wrap this up and put a
bow on it. After today's action, Spain played to a
two all draw with Morocco. Spain wins Group B they'll
(01:07:45):
face host Russia on Sunday in the Round of sixteen.
Russia advances. Despite losing today to Euro Y three nil,
Morocco was eliminated. Portugal played to a one old draw
with Iran. They finished second in Group B. Iran is out,
so Portugal advances to the round of sixteen, where they
will face Uruguay on Saturday and a game of a
little consequence Group A action guys wrapping up with Saudi
(01:08:07):
Arabia edging Egypt to one. The big hurrah in this one.
It's the first Saudi win in World Cup action since
the nineteen tournament in the USA. Oh interesting, but the
the draughty is over in Saudi Arabia. How about day
year Aguay Dan, Big time gonna be gonna be breaking
down Uruguay. Coming up an hour for the all of
(01:08:29):
your Uruguay coverage here on fs are you can go
Uru there is Yes, that's good. That's a top ten
hit um. By the way, Dan speaking of a top
ten hit summers here, which means it's time to get
to the ballpark. But without a working car battery, you'll
(01:08:51):
be watching from the couch, which isn't very fun. Luckily,
Auto Zone offers free battery testing, so you can be
a part of the action with free services from autos own,
you can't lose. Get in the zone Auto Zone that's
shown us knocks. I'm Dan Buyer, He's John Ramos over.
There is deb Carson, and there is Ryan Music. And
we all just got together to play a game of
(01:09:11):
Lebron James Clue to figure out where and when and
how Lebron James would be going in free agency, how
it's all gonna play out. So we chose the teams
that he can select from. We picked a day of
the week. Weekends were not included. We just Monday through Friday.
(01:09:32):
We're on the list. And also we figured how he
was going to announce his destination, if you will, because
he did it via TV the first time when he
left for the Miami Heat, and then he did it
in a piece of the Players Tribune. No, no excuse me,
there was SI dot Com that helped him released that
so in a written piece when he went back to
(01:09:54):
the Cleveland Cavaliers. So now we have set our teams.
We just ended up picking him, if you will, and
overlooking like, let's go to John's right off the bag,
you know, no clue music. Okay, thank you? Or is
this the remix? Now I'm ready? Okay, now there it is.
(01:10:17):
There is the clue music. John got the seventies sixers
on a Monday, as Lebron James is gonna have a
written piece to unveil where he will end up playing. Now,
sell us, John, why do you buy it? Sell us?
Sell us on the idea that you think that's how
it's gonna go for Lebron James. Well, I just think
a Monday's such a great day too. You start off
(01:10:39):
the week, you have the whole week for people to
just continually talk about this, So Monday is perfect. I
think the new way, the new way that that all
players in sports want to get out there is all
their friends on these written pieces. They all own everything.
They want to put it out there right down what
they want. They don't want to say it like I'm
saying it where you're stumbling through things here and there.
They want it all nice and nice right on the
paper there. And the seven sixers. I just think he
(01:11:00):
wants to stay in the East. I think it's the
Celtics are seventy sixers, but that's a team with that's
kind of younger. I think he wants to kind of
mold everybody, kind of spend his last year is moding
these young guys like Ben Simmons and Embiid and up
and have a nice path to the NBA Finals. Still
in the East, I like John's take on the earlier
in the week because that's how I ended up playing
my cards as well. If think Lebron is gonna be different,
(01:11:21):
it's just I don't know. I know, like staying in
the East, it seems that John wants to hold onto that.
I'm just not sure if that's going to ultimately be
how it plays out. I like the Cavaliers because I
am leaning more towards the idea of him looking around
and realizing in order to go to a place to
contend with Golden State, he needs a lot of things
(01:11:43):
to happen, a lot of things which it's very far
fetched at this point for them to happen. And I
think he either signs a short term deal or just decides,
you know what, I've moved around enough. I'd rather get
somebody else to join me here. I'm tired of the
you know, all the circus. He said he doesn't want
the circus in anymore. I think he's sort of softened
(01:12:03):
his approach about and his mental approach to the Cavaliers.
I think he's not as angry at the organization. He
was annoyed with him during the finals, but as he's
taken a step back, he's gotten a breath of fresh air.
I think he's going to do it on television, and
I chose television only because that was the only option left.
And uh and also I think he's gonna do it
on a Friday because Dan Lebron James is a giver
(01:12:24):
and he cares about people. You know, he cares about
more than anybody else other than his family and himself.
The people that do weekend sports radio cares about us Dan,
and he wants us to have something to talk about
and get first crack. Oh man, I just I don't know,
Like the TV thing has have been there and done that,
the Friday news dump, it just doesn't seem like a
Lebron thing. I'm not sure on how much I mean
(01:12:46):
it's gonna be said that we talked about all summer,
but to do it on a Friday, I don't I
don't know what I look at I look at Deb's Yeah,
she's stole mine. I wanted Radio. Look at I look
at Deb's with you got deb You got the Rockets
on a on a Thursday, And I went with Radio
because John Ramo stole my written piece calling. But but
you know, I think the Calves and the Lakers were
(01:13:09):
obvious choices because a lot of folks, you know Quota
Lebron who said he wanted to make the decision based
on family. I think the Calves, he can't get anybody
to come to Cleveland to uh of any consequence, it's
going to make a decision. He could come to the Lakers,
but the Lakers have been you know, perennial, not lately obviously,
but they've they've done fine without him throughout the history
of the franchise. He said he was going to make
(01:13:32):
the decision based on family. I think we're overlooking CP three.
Their families are tight. Uh. His kid, by the way,
he can go to school here at Sierra Canyon and
he can still play in Houston and be fine. Uh.
He he wants to have fun. He's got the money,
He's got the rings already. The Rockets still have a
shot to to get rings. Obviously, they did well until
(01:13:53):
later in the postseason, and I think the only team
that's going to knock off the Warriors is another super team,
and I think Lebron knows that, and he's got to
go join James Harden and CP three to make that happen. Thursday, Uh,
it'll be all about him all day Thursday and all
day Friday heading into the weekend. And radio. Of course,
we work in the world's greatest medium, and Lebron does
(01:14:14):
not yet have a podcast that I know of, or
a radio show, So why not make it on his own.
Everybody's gonna have to ask for and credit his show catching, right,
Maybe I recommend you know Sunday morning, he's right after
we play the feud on Fox Sports Sunday, if he
would like to. Here's the problem. I think Ryan Music
(01:14:34):
is going to get the day for sure, because you
chose Wednesday, and I think your spot on because your
idea was he wants the middle of the week all
to himself, nothing on the way, like, just as far
away from everything else as possible. Right, Yeah, So I
thought Wednesday was a good day because you he knows
everyone's gonna be leading up to all of that drama
talking about it all day Monday all day Tuesday, then
(01:14:55):
you drop it Wednesday morning. Now all people talk about Wednesday,
and then the reaction Thursday Friday. It's all about Lebron
all week long. In theory, it sounds like a great idea. However,
there's one thing going against Ryan Music and all of this,
and that's mr Calendar and Wednesday of Free Agency Week
is July four. And I'm just saying with Kevin Durant's
(01:15:19):
not wanting to make a splash and doing it on
Independence Day, Lebron James talk about all you want about
not wanting a circus, You're not gonna want to go
to Booms by the River and forget about Lebron Lebron.
I don't think it's gonna do it on Independence Day.
Let let me let me say this, Dan, You're right,
Kevin Durant didn't do it on fourth to July. What's
(01:15:39):
the one way to get back at Durant and prove
that he's he dominates NBA. Still, I can do it
on Independence Day. By the way, I just something I
just thought of. We're all gonna feel like morons when
he decides on the magic on a Sunday on snaps
like this, whole This whole segment wasn't waste of time
I think about. I had to Lakers right um, right
(01:16:02):
off the board. I was shocked at the seventy sixers
room was already filled by the Professor or whoever, so
the Lakers were there again. I'm not a fan of
Tuesday as a day, but it gets you out of
the dul drums of Monday and then it leaves you
the rest of the week to talk about it. So
I love Tuesday for Lebron James. And he's back on Instagram.
I've even seen it myself. The Lebron stories are there.
(01:16:24):
I think it's his way of doing it is if
you gotta follow Lebron James on Instagram, easy way to
pick up about three million more follows on Instagram. So
there it is. The Lebron James Clue game. You know,
I think the idea was better than the actual performance
out really well. I've only played Clue once in my life,
(01:16:46):
and now I have a better understanding of it than
I ever did of playing the actual game. I love Clue, man,
what a fun game. I s when you say you
and I just like slam a bottle of Jack Daniels
and play clue that sounds like something you'd been do
right videotape that found the whiskey in the bedroom with
all Right, Dan Buyer, Jonas knocks in for Doug Gottlieb
(01:17:08):
here Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next here one of
the a future Hall of Famer, a superstar is going
to say something that will bother many of you. You'll
hear it next here on FSR Vinnie Paul Online car
shopping can be confusing, not anymore. With True Price or
True Car now you can know the exact price you'll
(01:17:30):
pay for your next car. So visit True Car to
enjoy a more confident car buying experience. I'm Dan Buyer.
That's Jonas Knox and for Doug Gottlieb. Today, John Ramos
is hanging out as well. All right, because Doug's not here,
we still will take something interesting that was said from
other Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports one and play
(01:17:53):
it back to you and earlier today. Well, the reason
why Doug's not here is because he was in on
the Herd for calling Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio and
had this to say about Carmelo Anthony opting in on
his contract with the Oklahoma City thunder all Carmelo Anthony
had to do. Instead of haters gonna hate, instead of
(01:18:15):
offering up that anyone who doesn't like him or agree
with him opting in, or anyone who who thinks that
he can't win, instead of saying, hey, you should um
kiss another region of my body, right, instead of that,
why not simply say I'm staying Hey, Paul George, you
(01:18:40):
staying all in on Oklahoma City. Let's go anything it
takes to win a championship. That from Doug Gottlieb earlier
today on the criticism that Carmelo Anthony was taking, and
I guess his retorts on social media and on Twitter
about him opting to the in the final year of
(01:19:01):
the contract that's going to pay him twenty seven million dollars.
At least he was honest, man. I much rather have
that than some guys say. Listen, I'm all about winning
and this is this is my most the most important
thing to me is is bringing a championship to the city. Cool,
will you play for six hundred grand? Absolutely not? You
are kidding me and definitely not. At least he's honest
about it. I'm doing it for the money. Well, sorry, yeah,
(01:19:23):
I don't know if anybody has been critical of him
not taking them money. I think what they are is
just being critical of his game. And it's almost two
different conversations, like Oklahoma City knows what they've got with
Carmelo Anthony, and Carmelo Anthony knows what he's got in
his contract. So well mellow opts in all of us
(01:19:45):
as professionals would say, Okay, I can get twenty seven
million dollars next year, or I could look for money
somewhere else and not be as much as you said
six hundred thousand dollars. Or somebody wants to pay him
three million dollars next year. Yeah, no, dub, you're going
to take it. I don't think anybody here is saying, oh,
that's a bad you know, why why would you do that?
(01:20:06):
No one is saying it's a bad business move. They
just feel that he's stealing money. And that's, you know,
that's the Nixt problem, that's the Thunders problem, that's their
their own situation to deal. And why do you think
let me ask you this, why do you think people
dislike Carmelo Anthony? Because I've always been I've always been
curious about that. What has he really done wrong. I mean,
(01:20:28):
as a guy, everybody picks on him and they take
shots at him all the time. I understand his marriage
and all whatever you want to say about that, that's
his personal life, but just him himself, why do people
dislike him? I think it's because, and I'm just I'm
just guessing, is that he is such a one dimensional
(01:20:49):
player that and I'm and I'm trying to guess you like,
you know, he doesn't play defense, He's not going to
get other guys involved. It seems to always be about
him and his scoring numbers and his shots, and that's
what it seems to always be. I feel about why
he gets that reputation because it almost feels like a
(01:21:10):
like nobody really has a good reason because to say,
and I'm not saying that you are, but if people
were to say, well, he's a selfish ballplayer. If you
were to make a list of all the selfish players
in NBA history, you'd have a long list and you
still be working on it a year later. There's a
lot of selfish players in the history of the league.
I think he's one of those people that fans and
people in media like to pick on and dislike but
(01:21:31):
they can't really give you a legitimate reason why he's
like Jay Cutler, like, why do you really dislike him? Well, because, um,
you don't really have a good reason. There's no there's
no real reason there. I think it's because of his
talent that he did have, but he was so set
in his ways that he wouldn't adjust to anything, like
(01:21:52):
he had to get his own way, and that was
going to be the way, whether it meant winning or not.

because we've seen a thing or two. Discover home coverage
options and more at Farmers dot com. As it just
(01:22:18):
always seemed that maybe he put himself ahead of everything. Yeah,
I just think there's a lot of NBA players that
are like that, right or wrong. That's a lot of
that that in that league. That happens a lot of
the time, and I just feel like he gets piled
on more than others. And I've always just wondered why.
I don't. I don't really know what he's done wrong.
I'm thinking it's not passing in no defense, but that's
(01:22:40):
just me, all right. And John Ramos is here as well.
Boom coming up at the bottom of the hour, another
edition of the John Ramos shows he does, He's got
a lot in the holster. John's got a lot of
(01:23:01):
shows coming up to do. So yeah, it's gonna be
it's gonna be a lot of work for John Ramos
than the and the John Ramo Show crew. All right,
So when we reach a slow point, when we're filling
in for Doug, this is what we've got to do.
We have got to place bets me you, Ryan Music,
Deb Carson, can anybody anybody that wants to place a
(01:23:25):
bet on this? All right? The over under if John
were on, how long it would be? If John played
every single Ramos drop in the system, how long would
it last? Because they're quick hits. If we set the
over under at thirty five and a half seconds, what
do you think? Okay, what's the more reasonable forty five
and a half or a minute a flat minute? So
(01:23:48):
I would I would take the over I think as
well too. So we gotta do it when it gets
real slow. So basically Wednesday, we'll do that on the
show here on Fox Sports Radio, the NFL, the NFL
dot Com, I should say, had a an article up
on their site, and I thought it was the most
worthless article. And I understand filling time, and it's difficult
(01:24:12):
for league specific networks, especially one like the NFL Network
that even though there's NFL news eleven out of the
twelve months out of the year, Jonas, it's still a
four month season that you've got and then you got
the playoffs, and you got the Super Bowl and draft
combine and everything with that. But with games wise, it
(01:24:33):
goes from early September to the end of December. But
in June, when you make a list of you're the
first time problems for all thirty two teams. Oh yeah,
that's a little too much. It's just I don't care
enough that much about the Pro Bowl or about football.
I I in June. I don't care enough about it
(01:24:53):
to know what those answers are for every single team. Well,
it's like the NHL Network. Do you ever watched some
of their programming during off season? Not to pick on anybody,
but they've got a show on there called Crease and Desist.
I made that up. That's completely made up. That's not bad.
That's hey, that should get a order if that was
(01:25:14):
If that was the case, Uh not not not my
best joke. I was a little rattled because the guy
just walked by with a walker. No joke. Here a
Fox Sports Radio we're on that we can see onto
the street. A guy just walked by with a walker,
stopped in front of the window and drink booze with
a brown paper bag on it, set it back in
his walker and kept on going right as Dan and
(01:25:34):
I were doing the show. That's beat somebody going to
the bathroom in the bushes. That just happened. So at
least we've got that going for us here at the
Fox Sports Radio studios in Southern California. It is NBA
Awards Show night tonight, and we'll be doing that just
down the road in Santa Monica here in Southern California,
honoring the NBA's best. But there's also I guess you
(01:25:55):
could say it's a an awards show but a television show.
As the NFL Network tonight reveals their top ten in
their Top one countdown and jonas this has been a
countdown that now becomes it's an annual event for the
NFL Network is they try to phil programming in the
(01:26:17):
off season. It's amazing. It's it's like the magic trick
that gets you every time. Like when your grandpa used
to pretend like he would take your nose off your
face and he would put his thumb in between his
two fingers and go, I got your nose, and for
the longest time he could never figure out how he
had your nose, but it was still on your face.
This is what this is because every year they unveil
(01:26:37):
this list, and every single year somebody gets worked up
about it, and that's the entire point of the list
to draw reaction, and it works. Every time we know
the magic trick is done, we know it it's not
really what it seems, and we fall for it every
single time. Every time we fall for this, it's how
it's what rankings are done. Like, that's why they're done.
That's why you have a slide show to click through
(01:26:59):
thirty two pictures and then when you finally get to
number one, you've realized that you've clicked for the last
five minutes, seen about seven ads as you've gone through,
as there's been a different ad for every three or
four slides that you went through and then you find
out what number one is. But what I do find
interesting about this this top ten that was revealed because
(01:27:20):
I didn't reveal the order yet, but they did reveal
the top ten players that are in this top ten.
And as I look at the NFL today, Jonas, I
look at a quarterback driven league with wide receivers maybe
getting more of a push um, defensive ends, left tackles.
That's the type of NFL that I see. I I
(01:27:42):
see quarterbacks, and I see I see a defensive like
with the defensive stars that we've got in the NFL.
And I want to ask John Ramos this, and I
know that's he's probably busy, but John, just give me
a number one through ten. How many offensive players do
you think are are going to be featured in the
top ten of the NFL's top one hundred out of ten?
(01:28:05):
How many are gonna be offensive players tonight? Ten? Okay,
he was close eight, but eight out of the ten
top one hundred players in the NFL are considered offensive players.
I wouldn't be surprised that Tom Brady is on the list,
and he is. But what does surprise me is that
(01:28:25):
Drew Brees has made this list that Carson Wentz has
made this list, Carson Wentz was an m VP candidate
through three quarters of the season. The only issue jonas
with that is that Carson Wentz didn't play the final
quarter of the season for the Philadelphia Eagles because of
his leg injury. And then we see what Nick Foles
ends up doing with the Philadelphia Eagles. And this isn't
(01:28:47):
a this isn't a end of regular season top one
hundred list. You can see the whole how everything plays out.
So you've got these are your top ten. Levian Bell,
Tom Brady, Drew Breese, Antonio Brown, Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley,
Julio Jones, Von Miller, Aaron Rodgers, and Carson Wentz all
names arguably top ten names that you get in the NFL.
(01:29:12):
I just don't think that those that top ten is reflective, Drew,
of of what we've got for the best of the NFL.
It is a fantasy football list, if you will, and
it it. Those names are brand names set to draw
people in. I know it's it's subjective on who you
think is better or best, but there's no way that
(01:29:33):
Carson Wentz, Drew Brees, Julio Jones should be on this list.
But it works. It's like time tested. Every single year.
This happens like when you reach this point, a little
little little secret here. I know this is something that's
gonna come as a shock to a lot of people. Um,
But when you reach this time of year and you
(01:29:53):
know there's some baseball going on. World Cup has helped
out a little bit, and you've got some other interesting
stories going on in the world sports. But really, before
free agency really hits, there's this thing called content that
everybody's trying to get. And the best way to generate
content and reaction to your content is to form an
opinion that you know is going to piss off somebody
(01:30:15):
somewhere and stated as the official list on the official
league website. And this is what happens. And I'm telling you,
players get worked up about this. They'll tweet about it.
They'll say, I can't believe I'm only thirteen. I easily
should be in the top five. What is the criteria?
There is no criteria. It's It's all it is is
an opinion. But people get worked up about it. Every
(01:30:37):
single year. I look at this list of just and
and I think that there's some bias to it that
that gets you worked up. There's there's no doubt Todd
Gurley should be on the list. Hodd Gurley was an
m VP candidate this this past season. There's there's no
doubt that Todd Gurley, you know, should be on this list.
When you look at Aaron Rodgers, Yeah, Aaron Rodgers on
(01:31:00):
this list, Tom Brady absolutely on this list. But Drew Brees,
when you look at what the Saints did, what did
we love about the Saints this past year? What was
the why did the why did the Saints take this
corner that they had seemingly been unable to take for
the past five years when their defensive back was abducted
by a ghost on the last play of the season
(01:31:21):
for them, that could have been I would also say
that the running game of mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara
helped in an improve defense of the reason. Drew Brees
statistics number wise, statistically had a better season when he
was with the Chargers in two thousand four and had
the fewest amount of touchdowns this past season since two
(01:31:41):
thousand seven. It's the fewest amount that he's thrown yet
this is supposed to be one of Drew Brees is
like best to put him in the top ten. Nothing
against Drew Brees, but the reason that the Saints were
able to take that other step is because Drew Brees
did less. Yet he's a top ten and I know,
like it's not a trap, and I know that this
is what they wanted to do about it. But man,
(01:32:01):
just the name, like Jalen Ramsey was like sev Jalen
Ramsey is a reason why the Jaguars are a defense
that nobody wants to face, and his attitude helps them
make that. Like, Jalen Ramsey should be a top ten guy,
not a quarterback who you could put his stats in
his one of the bottom ten that he's had in
his entire career. I just I don't like I was
it's funny you bring up Drew Brees. I was looking
(01:32:23):
through his numbers, okays thirty nine. Um, he's gonna be
forty in January. His job is only going to get
easier with New Orleans because it used to be, well,
he doesn't have a defense and there's not enough around
him and all of these other things. And now he's
got a top five offensive line in the league. He's
got dual threats in the backfield. He's got he's always
(01:32:45):
gonna have a good offense. He's got continuity with the
head coach. He's got a top ten defense in the
NFL from a year ago. His job is only gonna
get easier. How long do you think Drew Brees could play.
I'm not kidding, he could play another four or five years.
I wouldn't be surprised. Like he's not swelling. He complete
it's sevent his passes last year. It's unbelievable. Well, they
don't throw downfield as much anymore that even it's just
(01:33:06):
it's just passes or different ways within he doesn't have
the arms strength of what he used to hit Robert
Meetchum and Deverie Henderson for streaking shots down the field.
It's a lot of five fifteen yards that happens when
he's old. I'm not trying to be critical of of
a die. I mean that's the way it goes, and
you got to figure out that's what Brady does. But
(01:33:26):
I just and not to to go off into a
different conversation, but he you brought up the name Drew Brees,
and it's like, man, he could just continue to play
at this level with how they're protecting the quarterback now
and everyone everyone assumes that the age of a quarterback now,
once you reach your mid thirties, oh, the end is near.
Like Aaron Rodgers, how much more time does he have left? Man?
(01:33:47):
You look at him and go, he's been in the
league thirteen years. That's only ten years on his body
because he sat the first three. Like the timelines, the
longevity of quarterbacks in the NFL have completely changed. But
to your point, yeah, there is what is your criteria
when when putting this together? Is it just what's gonna
piss most people off at the NFL network when we
put together this list, or who sold the most jersey
(01:34:10):
so we can represent the most popular players, or who
was drafted higher on our fantasy football leagues. That seems
it's weird. Yeah, that that seems to be the sense
to me. And hey, let's put the quarterbacks and then
you can have that argument, so we can we can
argue about Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady and and Drew
Brees and Carson Wentz. It's not even to me, it's
not even a it's not even I mean, Brady and
(01:34:33):
Rogers I think are going to be in the I
think Brady is gonna be one, And I think I
will say this, this is what I think the top
three is going to be. I'll put top four. I
think Brady is gonna be one. I think that Aaron
Donald's gonna be to Todd Gurley three and Aaron Rodgers four,
and and that's how I think it's going to play out.
But I don't think that Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady
are in the same category right now. Is Carson Wentz
(01:34:55):
He didn't finish the season and his team still won
the Super Bowl and Drew Brees statistically and have a
top half season of his career. I don't know how
you could put him in the top ten and have
those other guys there as well. Wow, you like you
think Brady is gonna be the top quarter I think
you'll be. Yeah. I think he'll be number one. Off
of the m v P season. I think that's where
it's going to go. I was gonna go Sage Rosenfels,
but again, I mean, if you want to go Ziglizac,
(01:35:17):
that's fine, Dan fair enough, And I would say what
you got Antonio Brown five? I would put him at
number five. That's how I think Double Rams for John
Ramos at two and three, UM Ram and all day
ram And on Have you heard that time John the

We're hanging out in place of Doug today. Hard to believe,
but Major League Baseball season almost at the halfway point. Yeah,
about a week or so, a little less maybe for
for some teams from that eight one game mark. To
break down what's happening in the league and in the
(01:36:41):
thirty teams around Major League Baseball. Are good buddy from
Fox Sports in the MLB network, John Morossi joins us
here on Fox Sports Radio. Hey, John, how's it calling.
I'm doing great, gentlemen, Happy summer to both of you
and all of our listeners out there. And yes, this
season has absolutely flown by, but does some eight storylines
brewing all around the Major I'm going to start off
(01:37:02):
with this, who's the best team in the National League?
That is a great question, because I don't have an answer.
Well my answer right now, I would tell you this,
it's the Los Angeles Dodgers. And I've given this some thought.
You look, on the morning of May seventeen, the Dodgers
were ten games under five hundred and eight and a
(01:37:24):
half games out of first place in the NASH League West.
Since that day May seventeenth until now, they've got the
best record in the major leagues and now they're finally healthy.
So I would go with that answer and say that
you have to include what happened last year. This is
not just a quick snapshot of what the standings looked
like right now. You look at the larger sample size
(01:37:44):
of performance and with so many of the same players
that came within one game and and really one rally
of of winning the World Series last year, I would
say the answer that question is the Los Angeles Dodgers.
John Palmrossi with us year on Fox Sports Radio. John,
the slum that Bryce Harper is in is it just
your standard typical This is a normal thing. It's a slump.
(01:38:06):
Every player goes through this. Or is there a feeling
from people you talk to there's something more to the story. Well,
here's here's the interesting part about this, Jones. I. I
spoke with some agents last week, so not and Scott
Boris was not one of them. This was an independent
panel of that I had canvassed to ask what they
thought about Bryce's struggles. Now he's been hitting below to
(01:38:27):
twenty here uh for some time now, And I said, listen,
is this going to cost him a lot of money? What? What?
What does his contract actually look like when all of
a sudden done based on how he has played and
the answer to that question was they still thinking. And
three different agents who are not his agents told me
they still think he gets three hundred million dollars based
(01:38:50):
on his age, and based on the projection, and based
on the belief that the modeling that so much of
these decisions is based on. Now the modeling will hell
the owners and the gms that you should not look
at a bad couple of months and say that that's
going to be indicative of the way he plays for
the next ten years, which is really fascinating because I
(01:39:12):
think for all of us, you look at certain players
Mike Mustakas for example, this past offseason, the market simply
has not been there for players that we all look
at and say, well, they put up the numbers, why
isn't it working out for them. Well, in the case
of Bryce, certainly, he's put up historically very good numbers
and he still has um one of the highest home
run totals in the major leagues this season um, but
(01:39:34):
the average is down in the two teams of the
two twenties, which is just hard to fathom for a
player of that of that caliber. Do I think he's
pressing a little bit? Yes, I think it was a
well documented last night and Sunday Night Baseball and and
last week on the end of the network up just
he's he is drifting a bit more than he usually does.
Usually does that a fair amount is part of his
(01:39:55):
normal swing, but it's happening now to a large extent,
and he's really vulnerable away and I think that until
something changes with him, the numbers in the strikeouts book
continue to be there. That being said, he had a
big night last night for the Nationals on National TV,
so maybe that gets him going again. But the summary
year is teams, based on their analytical approach, will look
(01:40:16):
at his age and the numbers he's put up already
and say they believe he is going to bounce back.
John Rossi, Johnny us here on Fox Sports Radio on
the Doug Gottlip Show, He's Jonas Knox, I'm Dan Buyer
in for Doug today. It's on him, isn't it, though?
Bryce Harper, I mean the Nationalists and I love the
move to get Kelvin Herrera when I don't even know
if they needed bullpen help. We know how good Max
(01:40:37):
Scherzer is and what they've got at the top of
the rotation. Is it on him if they don't make
the postseason. Well, it's really it's a tough question, and
it's a good question. I think that he has to
be one of their best players. He has to be.
And the fascinating thing is you look at this, the
way he's played this season, UM, and and the totality
(01:40:58):
of it, even by some of the advanced metrics, has wins,
the buve replacement of even factor in the defense. He
has not been all that exceptional in that regard either. So, um,
if they missed the playoffs, is that Bryce Harper's fault,
it would be I think a certain percentage would be
his responsibility. I think part of it, too is the
injuries Steven Strasburg being out, Zimmerman being out, that they've
(01:41:21):
dealt with injuries really all season long. Kellison has missed time,
Kedrick has missed time, Kincer just got back today, Joe
Ross is out. So I think there will be many
factors of the Nationals missed the playoffs. But certainly, if
Harper finishes the year batting in the two teams and
the Nationals do not make the playoffs, I think it
would be relatively easy and probably relatively correct to say
(01:41:45):
that Harper is a big reason why John PALMEROSSI MLB Network,
Fox Sports One, Fox Sports Radio, MLB Insider with us
here on FS are if somebody maybe hasn't been paying
attention to baseball and they've been watching the NBA or
doing other things, they were to just start tuning in
over the past couple of weeks and you had to
catch them up on the most fascinating story going in
(01:42:06):
Major League Baseball right now. What's your answer? Well, first
of all, shame on you if that's the case. It
also and by the way, we had too great we
had the NBA playoffs were fantastic, plastic, fantastic. I I
I kid, of course, but I think, to me, it's
it's Mike Trout being better than ever and continuing to
(01:42:29):
defy um any logical um framework for statistics and modern days.
He he just simply does not make outs. And I
think for him, I root for this because I love
the game. I root for him to become a larger
crossover star in in baseball, and I think that it's
(01:42:49):
important I like to say this and make this point.
It's not the fact that he's not as ubiquitous and
Lebron James. UM is not his fault, it's not baseball's fault.
A lot of factors there, But I think that you
start in terms of becoming a crossover sports icon in
our country by winning championships. Derek Jeter would not have
(01:43:10):
been Derek Jeter had he not been a Yankee and
won all those World Series so early in his career.
Mike Trout has played three playoff games in his career
and he has lost them all. At some point in
time that has to change and he can win the
All Star Game MVP as he's done before. Uh, he
needs to have postseason success. So I think this year,
for me, I'm really curious to see does he finally
(01:43:34):
get his team to the playoffs again for one of
the second time, And once he gets there, does he
start to build his legend in a way that casual
sports fans will become fans of Mike Trout. I think
that's a key storyline for baseball. Also, Um, we were
there at Fenway over the weekend, UH, Mariners and Red
Sox and the Mariners. Uh that they won the game
that we had on Fox on on Saturday, but they
(01:43:55):
have scuffled a bit lately. I still like the chances
for that team to make the playoffs for the first
time since two thousand one, and that's the longest playoff
drout all the four major sports in our country. The
Buffalo Bills, of course, that they abdicated that role to
the Mariners after last football season. So I think, to me,
having the Mariners relevant again reminds me of my youth
(01:44:17):
and watching highlights of Griffey and a Rod and what
a fun team that was. When Seattle is engaged in
a baseball city, the game is better for it, and
I think that right now we're seeing that in the
great city of Seattle, Washing JP. How many years in
a row have you picked the Mariners to make the playoffs?
So here's the funny story that Joe's and I'm glad
you mentioned it because you and I have worked for
a long time. You and I have worked here for
a long time, so you're aware of this. I picked
(01:44:38):
them every year, And in fact, there was one year
on MLB Network that that we were doing a season
preview show and Greg Amsinger said, John, you gotta have
a pick that's gonna surprise me. And and because no
one was picking the Marriagers, and I said, the Mariners
are gonna win the American League West, and Greg said,
I refused to accept your answer. You must pick another
one because you picked them every year, so the long
(01:45:00):
running joke. Well, then this year I said on opening Day,
congratulations to the Mariner fans. I said this on Twitter,
by the way, you can you can look it up
as they say that, the congratulations of the Mariner fans
because this time, for the first time in about five years,
I am not gonna pick you, so I wish to
congratulate you on win in the World Series. And here
they are now on their way in the playoffs. I've
got I've got family in the great city of Seattle,
(01:45:22):
so I've got, you know, a lot of relationships there,
and I love the city so that there may be
a small part of me that they would love to
see them make the make the playoffs. And I've kind
of said that to my my friends there and family there. So, uh,
we'll see if it works out. But maybe maybe a
bit of a reverse psychology to bring some joy to
my family lives in a great city. I'll tell you
what it's done. The America League playoff teams are already set.
It's over. With you don't even need the second half
(01:45:43):

They advanced. They will face Uruguay Saturday in the round

apiece bottom seven in Detroit, Lucas due to with an
RBI single Royals are up one nothing on the Visiting Angels.
(01:47:31):
They are in the top of the fifth. Haven't talked

challenging the four game suspension for violating the league performance
enhancing drug policy. And finally, former Alabama All America and

catch the eye of your favorite person on Twitter. Here's
a hint. Number one is sliding into the d m
s right now, always, but right now. Dana Jonas. I
wanted to bring you guys in and get your thoughts
on some of these sports topics I have. Lebron James
(01:52:57):
has been the best player in the NBA for the
past what ten years or so? Would you agree with that? Guys?
Tear me out on this. So we already know Lebron
is the best player in America. But what if Lebron
decides in free agency to sign with a team in
Spain and prove he is not only the best player
in America but the best player in the world. What if, guys? Exactly? Wow.
(01:53:23):
Bryce Harper has been in a bit of a slump recently,
and a lot of people have said to me and
friends of mine, because he's under a lot of pressure
since it's his contract. Here this might sound crazy, guys,
but what if Bryce Harper's acides had just retire after
this season? Do that? Maybe he's tired of all this
pressure and it's time to walk away from the game. Guys,
(01:53:43):
what if? What? I don't get it? Last one? Here? Guys,
Football fans everywhere are wondering how much longer will Tom
Brady play? When is Tom Brady going to retire? Well,
here's something to think about. What if Tom Brady ever retires,
he just keeps playing to he's seventy years old? What
(01:54:04):
if what I don't That's all the time we have
for tonight. A big thanks to everyone who tweeted and
using the hashtag the John Romachel. Also you can hashtag
mischievous Monday. Thanks you Duran Duran for being tonight's special
musical guests. And sorry, guys, we'll have to get to
your interview next time. And Ryan, I'll catch you on
someone else's backside. Let to stick the landing there, John,
(01:54:28):
That was good, really good? What if we never do
that segment? Hashtag man that's amazing? Often running on a Monday,
we took the best first guys, uh Dan Buyer Jonas
(01:54:49):
stocks him for Doug Gottliep here on Fox Sports Radio.
By the way, so the NBA Awards are coming up
later tonight. Um, if you want to cast your vote
on NBA Coach of the Year, all you have to
do is tweet at J S. Ramos zero six with
the hashtag the John Romo show up next here on
Fox Sports Radio. All right, up back to here on
(01:55:12):
Fox Sports Trading. I get it to be professional guys, Um,
there is there is something going on involving one of
the top players in the league. It's it's it's a pitch.
Something is happening. We'll tell you what that is. But
first Dan tell him this online car shopping can be confusing,
not anymore. With true press of true car now you
can know the exact press you'll pay for your next car.
So it's a true card to enjoy the more confident
(01:55:34):
car buying experience. He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan buyer. John
Ramos is here as well thanks to euro Jack's for
a clue themed John Ramos game, if you will. Ended
up retweeting that and the reviews are in a lot
of likes. Um. Davon Mills all about the mischievous Monday
(01:55:58):
from the John Ramos Show. How about that? Uh? And
Jason Randall wants creepy van rankings sometime this week something
you could look towards meybe because it's a full week
of John Ramo Show here on Fox Sports Radio. And
you know, if they wanted to, if they wanted to
reach out to you, John, what would the hashtag be
at j S Ramos zero six or at John Ramo
(01:56:21):
Show or what's the hashtag again? I think that was
a question. I'm sorry. So he realized Dave what he
said it mischievous Monday. No, that's another hashtag the John
Ramo Show, and you must have all of those to
make John c see. Let it's been a busy day
here in for Doug gottlie Pier on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:56:44):
If you want to tweet Jonas, get him at the
Jonas Knocks. If you want to get me on Twitter,
you can get me at Dan Buyer on Fox. And
if you want to get Deb Carson, well it's simple
enough at Deb Carson the Press and Dev is here
to fill us in on the latest happening to the
world of sports. Hello Dan, and Hello Jonas. Obviously, the
Lakers have already gotten in a little hot water for
(01:57:06):
tampering over the last eighteen months or so, but Lakers
are not tampering this time. One of their fans, though,
doing some dirtey work for them, a personal injury attorney
for working out some coin on their behalf. He's a
long time Lakers season ticket older. He already put up
some billboards back in March to try to recruit Lebron James.
Now his efforts are focusing on Paul George and he's
(01:57:28):
paid for over forty billboards around l A billion dollars
pretty much among the billboards slogans quote can't spell purple
and gold without PG end quote you imagine that a. So, Paul,
what was the tipping point? I mean, what really did
it for you in your decision to come to l A.
(01:57:48):
And it was crazy. When I saw my picture up
at Randy's Donuts, I was like, I gotta go. We're
adding your guys. Gotta happen, gotta be there. The Lebron ones,
the l A bron ones that that you were talking
about earlier, still up about a month ago. I don't
know if they still are. I did see you when
I haven't seen any of the Paul George ones. But
to be completely honest, if you see one in l A.
(01:58:09):
And if you're Paul George, the decision has been made.
He's gonna be there no matter what that three episode,
hour long documentary on ESPN is gonna be about. And Dan,
you haven't seen it because they go up today and
they're staying up until the end of July. You may
see some on the way home. The lebron ones are
up for a while. Like I was surprised to see
(01:58:31):
and and and maybe it was early May that I
ended up seeing it, but I remember I saw one.
I'm like, wow, these things are still Hey, maybe you
gonna maybe get a ninety day Lisa on a billboard.
I have no idea right now. They do realize though,
that when you when you spell Lebron l A b
r O N, you misspelled his name right. They are
aware of that. I'm just curious. Moving gone to a
(01:58:53):
different n v A T the Atlanta Hawks and and guys,
did you know they have a four point line? The
Atlanta Hawk, Yes, they, I guess. In some of the
pre draft workouts, they let a lot of their potential draftees,
including Trey Young, shoot from a four point line, and
coach Lloyd Pierce says that that's to work on spacing.
But evidently Trey Young stellar from the four point line
(01:59:19):
to two interesting things from that story. Number One, I
didn't know who the new Hawks coach was, so I
know Mike Budenholzer was, but I didn't know Lloyd Pierce
was the new guy. And number two, the Hawks need
a four point shot to keep up with the NBA.
It's always good when you're working out a player and
you make him go through drills and do things that
will never be done in a game. You know. It's
(01:59:40):
like when the Browns worked out Baker Mayfield, They're like,
you know what, you look pretty good, man, But can
you throw it left hand? Am I ever going to
need to? No, it will never happen, But can you
do it? Like? What a dumb idea? As more people
know that Jamie Gertz is now an owner of the
Hawks than they do that Lloyd Pierce is the coach. Alright,
moving onto why Lebron is not being heavily recruited to Houston.
(02:00:04):
James Harden was asked that question and he said, quote, honestly,
like what Lebron's about to be in his sixteenth year
in the league. I don't think there's anybody that can
persuade him to go where he wants to go. He
got three championships. It's about business, it's about family for him.
I think that's that's that seems pretty obviously. There isn't
(02:00:25):
anything like you not I mean, for where he wants
to be post plane career, there's nothing that you could
do that could While I'm like, I think Paul George
would be wiled by the billboards, but there's nothing that
you would be able to do to Lebron to make
him be like, oh you know what they did this
for me in Philly. They flew an airplane with a
banner with my name on that. Yeah, there's nothing that
(02:00:48):
you can really do for It's like getting a rich
person a Christmas gift. They already have everything, So what
do you really get him? Like a gift card? They
don't need it, So like, whatever you do, it's not
really I don't think it's to sway him one way
or the other. He's going to decide on his hat
for that one. By the way, make a donation to
the charity of their choice and just make sure the
(02:01:08):
charity doesn't reveal how much the donation was. That's smart. Yeah,
what do you guys do that? Do you cross off
the price tag? Would you give somebody a gift? I
don't I circle it, but yeah, I swear of got
because if you complain that my gift isn't isn't worth
enough money? Like if I get you something that says
the box and you complain about it, that just shows
(02:01:28):
how greedy you are. If you want to donate, you
can donate to the John Rama's foundation. Yes, yea that
helps needy kids Lucas and Sarah right and the socker
in uh where uh. Josh Rosen evidently has done well
in Arizona's camp. Sam Bradford, however, remains the likely choice
(02:01:51):
to start a quarterback for the Cardinals is coming September.
Bradford has told Rosen after the draft that he would
be an open book for the first round pick, and
Rosen said Bradford has been true to his word. He's
quote been helping me out a ton end quote. I
think Sam Bradford probably also said, I'm probably gonna last
after week three, so make sure you can absorb as
(02:02:14):
much as you can because then this is very likely
to be your job backing out there and press That
was the press. Car shopping can be confusing with terms
like dealer price, list, price, and invoice. True Car shows
you what other people paid for the car you want to.
You can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a newer used car. Visit True Car to enjoy
a more competent car buying experience. If you were Dwayne
(02:02:38):
Casey and one NBA Coach of the Year tonight, would
you take a shot at the Toronto Raptors. Absolutely well,
probably like a d X crotch chop, maybe something like
that throat slash gesture. I would I would go really
really over the top, very dramatic. I I'm interested to
see what he would say, and I I'm not sure
(02:03:02):
if I'm going to watch the NBA Awards show tonight,
but if there was Mussi TV, that would probably have
to be. What if he dressed up somebody in the
Raptors mascot costume and he gave him a stone cold
stunner on the stage. That would be a way to
go out.
