A Crazy Crazy Friday to say the least, talking hoops,
talking golf, and yes, talking traffic. We are broadcasting love
for the Tirec dot Com studios. Tirec dot com will
help you get there at unmatt selection, fast free shipping,
free road has a protection and over ten thousand recommended installers.
Tirec dot com. The way tire buying should be here
(00:39):
is Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Byer in for Doug Gottlieb today.
I do want to start out first and foremost. I
am in our Tirec dot Com studios in southern California.
Ryan Hollins is at our tire dot Com studios in Houston, Texans.
In Houston, Texas. I know there was a storm that
hit the area. Ryan, everything is everything. It's okay on
(01:00):
your end. Everybody safe and sound. Just want to check
in because there's some scary video coming from the city
that you live in over the past twenty four hours.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
No, I appreciate it. I'm still collecting information. We've got
power and everything here closer to the city. I know
a lot of the powers out. There is a lot
of damage downtown that I saw, and still figuring everything
else out. But I appreciate you for asking. But everything
on my end is good.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Dan good, good, good to hear, and our thoughts are
to those and Hughes. Those images were crazy with some
of the shots from downtown, so we hope that everyone
is okay. The big story of today kind of is
connected to weather. Has nothing to do with the Minnesota
Timberwolves storming over the Denver Nuggets last night and they're
(01:48):
winning the NBA playoffs to force a Game seven. It
has to do with the weather that occurred earlier today
in advance of the PGA Championship at Valhalla, but it
has nothing to do with the actual storm or what happened.
Rain was in the area and there was an accident
that occurred where a pedestrian was killed, a fatal accident
(02:09):
when he was struck by I believe it may have
been a bus that was on site, causing a lot
of delays around Valhalla, and that's where Scottie Scheffler World
number one enters. This was the description of what happened
this morning by ESPN's Jeff Darlington, who was on the
scene as Scottie Scheffler got into more than just hot
(02:31):
water with officials as he was trying to navigate the
traffic situation around this accident. Earlier today, entering.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Vahalla Golf Club this morning, we witnessed a car pull
around us. That was Scotti Scheffler was in the car.
To be very clear about the details here, Scotty Scheffler
has been detained by police officers placed in the back
of a police vehicle in handcuffs after he tried to
pull around what he believed to be security ended up
(03:00):
being police officers.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
They told him to stop.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
When he didn't stop, the police officer attached himself to
the vehicle. Scheffler then traveled another ten yards before stopping
the car. The police officer then grabbed at his arm,
attempting to pull him out of the car before Scheffler
eventually opened the door, at which point the police officer
pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against
(03:26):
the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs. Scheffler was
then walked over to the police car, placed in the
back in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked
toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said,
please help me. He very clearly did not know what
(03:49):
was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly,
very aggressively. He was detained in that police vehicle for
approximately time twenty minutes. The police officers at that point
did not understand that Scotty Scheffler was a golfer in
the tournament, nor or of course that he is a
(04:10):
number one player in the world.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
So that was the description from ESPN's Jeff Darlington again
who was on site, and Darlington actually even had some
video as they were putting Scheffler taking him to the
police car to end up taking him to jail, and
when asked what they were going to do with him,
he said, well, he's going to jail. In that situation.
I want to say something first, and Ron, your former
professional athlete, we've known stories of man. That guy seemed
(04:38):
like he was such a good guy. We guess we
just didn't know who he really was behind the scenes.
Scotty Scheffler is who Scotty Scheffler is. I think Scotty
Scheffler is a great guy, and I think that everybody
believes that Scotty Scheffler is a great guy. This has
nothing to do if Scotty Scheffler was a great guy
or not. This is everything to do with listening and
doing what you were told to do in a city
(05:00):
situation that was already chaotic. And that's I think we
can all deal with this. Ryan. This isn't a professional
athlete situation. This is literally a traffic in safety situation.
That's what's surrounding Scotti Scheffler today.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, it does. And you know, even though we're hearing
you know, Jeff's account there, I'm not saying that Jeff
is wrong or anything. You know, we don't know the
exact details and we look, I don't know police procedure,
you know, if you're supposed to hang on to a
car and pull the guy out. You know, it sounds
like if there's a fatality, there is a definitely some
(05:33):
you know, level of urgency there. And you know, I know,
as an athlete, sometimes we feel entitled to, oh, well,
whatever's going on here, I gotta get around because I
gotta I gotta play today. I have to compete, you know,
and that sometimes is a mindset. So hopefully things can
work its way out. Hopefully the officer, you know, wasn't injured.
(05:56):
But it just seems like a lot of confusion here
in this matter. And as just saying, I agree, it's
sounds like it just these things escalated very quickly. You know,
you never want to see anything like that, and you know,
hopefully you can, you know, get back to the sport.
But I think it's it's important to reserve judgment here,
but also important, like you said, hey man, when you're
(06:17):
told to do something, there's a sensitive situation and as
an athlete, again I've been there before. Oh just let
me around. Oh oh it's okay, I'm supposed to be here. Man,
Sometimes those things don't go over well. And for the golfers,
you know, he probably never should have been driving himself.
He should have. There should have been security there, updating
those guys to where they're never in that in that situation,
(06:41):
so there should have been a team around him. He
never should have been one on one addressing an officer.
There should have been some type of of of help there.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
What is unique in that Gi, just in that situation
is I've seen this more than a couple of times
where the player drives in the cat ride shotgun and
to me for their relationship on the course, it is
it is so unique where I'm thinking to myself, hey man,
just let the caddy drive. And I don't know if
his caddy, Ted Scott, was with him in the vehicle
(07:11):
at the time, but it's funny Ran that this conversation
comes up because, and I'm bringing in Jason Stewart, our
show's executive producer, I'm having deja vu from at least
at some point in the last month or two when
we talked about just driving and when someone goes flying
past you on the highway, how you just have your
fingers crossed that they're going to be pulled over on
(07:33):
the side of the road, like within a half mile
by a police car who's busted them speeding. That happened recently,
didn't it.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
I think so it was a couple of weeks back,
and you and I battle the four or five every
day on the way home for those around the country.
The four to five Freeway probably the most impacted freeway
in the world, and there are just halts. You're stopped
on the freeway and then you see that car make
the decision to go on the shoulder to get they
need to be, and you know in that person's head
(08:03):
that whatever he's doing to break the law, it's justified
because he really needs to be somewhere. Like the hundreds
of us other cars could spend time wasted in traffic,
but that one guy really needs.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
To be somewhere.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
It's very important and he's fully justified in his own mind.
And that's what this Scheffer thing kind of reminds me of.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
It totally reminds me of that. And it's not that
it's the the arrogant portion of it Ron and Jason
that Scotty Scheffler believes because he's a player. There obviously
was a point where Scotty Scheffler was told, you need
to go to this point, and players and other officials
are being let in. But also when someone tells you
to stop, don't go anywhere. You know what you do,
(08:46):
You stop, and you don't go anywhere, You don't try
to move around, especially in a scenario where there was
a fatality when someone is hit by a shuttle bus
and loses their life, like you don't know that, just
like the car that's flying past you on the freeway
on the median doesn't realize yet the accident that's actually
holding everybody up is on that median that they're may
(09:08):
be cruising fifty miles per hour down the road like
It's just it's simple to me. And I've listened to
the broadcast. I've read the tweets and the memes. By
the way, for what is a serious situation off the
chain like crazy creative, but in what is a serious
situation the way that the broadcast has handled it, I
(09:30):
don't know necessarily how I would would would shape this
because Scottie Scheffler is playing some darn good golf right now,
even after all of this happening. But they're almost giving
him credit for being able to bounce back and be
able to be in the frame of mind right now
where he's five under on his round today and three
shots back of the lead. Where imagine going through what
(09:53):
he's gone through and being able to play and do that.
None of that matters, And I don't know if you
have to keep on addressing it. I don't know how
you handle in the broadcast. But the fact of the
matter is this, someone in the yellow coat, whether you
thought it was a cop or he didn't know if
it was a cop or not, was telling you to
stop because of a chaotic situation. And you know what
(10:13):
you did. You didn't stop. You didn't stop at all.
You didn't do what they asked. So there's no way,
no possibility at any point do I actually feel bad
for Scottie Scheffler If you're not listening to what is
happening at five in the morning, when nobody's there's no
lights except the flashing lights, and there's someone who lost
their life because of an accident, it's got to be chaotic.
(10:34):
It's got to be crazy. But I'm sorry, like he
was in the wrong. If he didn't if he didn't
stop when they told him to stop, then it's Scotti
Scheffler's fault.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yeah, And again he's got to be escorted by security.
He should have somebody driving him and somebody knowledgeable about
what's going on, so you know, from a security team
if there is ever an issue, or there would be
traffic or you know, obviously a different situation. Unfortunately, there's
a fatality, condolences to the family. You know, when I
(11:06):
played in LA with the Clippers, you'd have situations where
they would redo the floor or there would be a
quick changeover because the Kings were there, the Lakers were
there at the same time, and it would be known, Hey,
you can't get on the floor till this time. Hey
there's going to be traffic. You might want to leave
it a little early. So you know, those updates should
be immediately sent out. And again, like you said, he
(11:28):
should have been driving, you know, he shouldn't have been driving,
or there should have been communication, because it does it
seems like there's a lot of miscommunication. But nonetheless, you're right, Dan,
if somebody says, don't do something, it's really hard to
get you know, get over that. And you know, glad
that he's able to get back to golf.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
And Scheffler even released a statement saying, I never intended
to disregard any of the instructions. I thought I was
doing what I was being asked to do. And if
that's the case, if he didn't, if he didn't understand
what was going on, that's his side of the story,
But it's not a free pass a. It's not an
opportunity to say, okay, well, hey, we're all good here. Now.
(12:11):
He didn't understand what he was doing. I didn't mean
to hold on that passing play on third and fifteen.
You didn't. So that was my take away. The penalty, No,
it doesn't doesn't work like just because he didn't understand
the scenario or what was actually being said. If you violated,
if he did what was wrong. Now, the police reports
also come under fire because they wrote that the eighty
(12:33):
dollars uniform or the pants that the officer was wearing,
we're a complete loss. That seems to be adding on
just a little bit if you're the Louisville Police Department.
The officer did suffer injuries to his wrist and knee
in trying to get Scotti Scheffler out. There's some people
who are being critical of how they handled Scheffler in
that scenario. Again, it's not up to them to know
(12:54):
if it's the world number one or not. But if
you are having a situation where someone is not following
the rules that you are believed to trying to be enforcing,
I'm sorry you have to yet that Chao. That situation
is already chaotic as it is, So you're doing what
you're doing. I don't fault the police officer in this scenario.
(13:17):
We're doing the actions that they had. It just you've
already got one loss of life. You don't want to
have another situation where someone's actions because you didn't stop them,
caused another.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Is that smart though? I mean, like I said, i
I'm not you know, adapt in that you know situation.
But would it be smart for an officer to hang
onto a car and pull somebody out? Is there you
know a better means? You know, it's it seems risk
in your your life in itself.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
And yeah, it's a very fair point. It's a you know,
to to hold onto the car and the actions of
what Scottie Scheffler did after disobeying. And to the point
of if that you're saying, if that caused the injury
to the do the officers unwarranted actions cause his own injuries?
Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yes? Is that? I, like I said, I don't know
police procedure. I don't know, but I don't think if
someone is really trying to get away from you, right
hanging onto the car and pulling him out the car
doesn't seem like the you know, the smartest choice, right
and that that car just takes off. You're going for
a ride. You're not gonna win that battle, you know.
(14:28):
But again I will say, I don't know police procedure.
I'm just speaking for my own ignorance.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
Yeah, I know it's a very fair point, Jason Stewart, Ryan,
you have rolled with VIPs, you know, teammates, people that
make tens of millions of dollars and are expected to
be treated a certain way when they are out and about,
And I think that can't be lost in this story.
I think a lot of Scheffer's actions were based in
(14:55):
that entitlement. People don't say no to this guy. People, well,
people should know who he is, especially if you're a
cop in the city where a golf major is. You
should know who I am and you should allow me
to I just think that that should be the takeaway here.
I think there's a there's like a privilege and an
entitlement in the story that needs to be at the
(15:18):
very least mentioned, if not headlined, in this It's to
me that's the off putting part of this. I mean
you've been in those situations, Ryan, don't you think there
was some entitlement here?
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Yeah, no, one hundred percent. And it sounds like there's entitlement,
But you know, the real question comes about of just
why he didn't have a driver. So, for instance, when
I was with the Clippers, Chris, when Chris would come
to games, Chris had a driver, Chris had security, he
had a driver. There is not a high profile player
(15:51):
you play with her. You'd see the NBA for the
most part, that doesn't have a drier. The driver. You
can say, you probably know this. Jon doesn't have a guy.
You'll see somebody. Oh that's his guy. You know, that's
that's you know, Hey, that's Lebron's guy. Right there, that's
someone's guy right there. You know that's Anthony Davis's guy. Okay,
so you'll know. And that person is supposed to mitigate
(16:14):
any type of confusion, any instances or you know, even hey,
drive you to the game, drive you to these situations.
And when you get to this level, your stepping is
the number one call for the world. You should not
be driving yourself to these events, you know, especially not
on game days. So you can do what and Dan,
(16:35):
you said, it focus on what you need to do,
which is golf. They don't pay you to drive, They
pay you to golf, and you're doing a darn good
job of it.
Speaker 6 (16:43):
So any factor variable that can come in between that
you need to be paying so in a lot of
money so that you, who clearly was confused in this matter,
will never be in this situation where you can be
confused because clearly he wasn't adept to understand and what
was going on here.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
It's you know, we're getting We're getting responses as well
on social media. Hit Ryan up at the Ron Hollins.
You can find me at Dan Byer on Fox. People
asking us that the cop was probably being pretty rude
to Scotty Scheffler. Again, we don't know that. Someone else
pointed out that the police report falls apart that the
(17:24):
officers attempt to give the instruction to Scottie Scheffler may
have failed at that point, and then at that point
it's off the I don't I don't believe that if
Scotty Scheffler is not getting the messages, he can't just
plead ignorance. It's just the way it is. I don't
know the procedure, but if a cop was injured, Yeah,
(17:45):
then in whatever place it is, you can't just let
it fly. So the procedures that came through from what
I've seen, it all started with Scotty Scheffler's decision, whether
we knew it or not, to not obey the rules
that were needed in the scenario, and that's how we
got to this point. I don't think that Scotty Scheffler
is a bad guy at all. His statement actually hit
(18:07):
all the points. And again, there was a life that
was lost today that caused all of this chaos. But
you know, for a guy who's gonna shoot sixty seven
and trying to go for back to back Majors and
halfway through the Grand Slam, it's one heck of a
performance on the course, but it shouldn't overshadow what actually
happened earlier today, and that started with a bad decision
(18:28):
by Scotty Scheffler. He's Ryan Hollins, I'm Dan Byer. It's

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio on a Friday,
He's the NBA vet decade. In the game, Ryan Hollins
hit him up at the Ryan Hollins you can find
me at Dan Byer on Fox Tonight. In the NBA
Pacers try to force a game. They're at home in
Indianapolis taking on the New York Knicks in their Game six.
Last night's Game six saw the Timberwolves destroy the Denver Nuggets,
(19:11):
setting up for a Game seven coming up on Sunday.
Joining us now good friend of the show that joins
the Doug Gottlieb Show every week. He publishes a substeck
called the Steinline, and his co host of the podcast
This League Uncut with fellow insider Chris Haynes Find It
Where You podcast, Mark Stein joins the program again. All right, Mark,
explain how Denver can jump out to a nine to
(19:35):
lead Minnesota. Coult timeouts a couple of minutes in and
then at the end it's a forty five point win
for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Just what we all get believing
in the Nuggets. They lose by forty five how does
this snowball effect occur with a team that a lot
of people feel are going to repeat as NBA champions.
Speaker 8 (19:54):
I don't know that I have a better answer for
you beyond this has been a series of the inexplicable.
I mean, the whole thing has been a rollercoaster that
you know, we look, a lot of us picked this
thing to go seven. I had Nuggets in seven from
the beginning, but certainly this was not my roadmap to
(20:18):
see how good Minnesota was in the first two games,
just the epic rebound we got from Denver in the
next three. And you know, I was guiding myself after
two because I was definitely one of those people who
I wasn't saying that Denver was done, the series was over,
(20:39):
and it was going to be a sweep. But I
certainly didn't envision the Nuggets storming back to win the
next three, even though you know, it's only been five
times in NBA history that a team has lost the
first two at home and gone on to win a
best of seven series. But I've actually covered two of them.
I've seen two of them from very close range, and
(21:00):
I know Ryan certainly remembers the last one. You know,
Dallas Houston in five, so that was a wild one
where Dallas lost the first two and one in seven.
And then in twenty twenty one we had that crazy
Mavericks Clippers first round series where the home team lost
the first six games. Just bizarre. So it can be done.
(21:23):
And you know those those were teams that didn't have
championship pedigree. But for Denver to go up three to
two and just get completely blown off the floor and
their starting lineup, I think it's minus fifty for the
series if I'm reciting that that properly, which is just
you know, we have such you know, the questions about
(21:44):
the Nuggets. We're all about the depth and you know
a big question mark now going into Game seven, Damal
Murray's elbow. How you know how serious is it? Will
he looked more like Jamal Murray in Game seven?
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Do you feel like this last game and even just
a series and a hole? Has this told us more
about the Nuggets or has it told us more about Minnesota?
Because you know, it's the fun about playoff basketball is
you know, we want to jump off the ledge each
and every game. But who does it say more about?
Speaker 7 (22:21):
Is this?
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Anthony Edwards arrival. First, Yoka is just the greatest thing
since slight Spread. And then it's like, well, you know, hey,
he's not the MVP that you should you know, we
think he is. Who does this say more about?
Speaker 8 (22:35):
You know what I'm going to say, Minnesota? And look
on the one reason you might want to answer Denver
is because your last season, the Nuggets were sixteen and
four in the playoffs, they were tied two to two
with Phoenix, they were tied one to one in the
finals before winning the last three games. But they were
(22:55):
never in serious, oh my god adversity in the playoffs.
They basically played in from in front almost exclusively, whereas
this time they were at two down and you've lost
to at home. They're facing absolute dire circumstances. So I
think the three game rebound in Game three, four and
five did tell us a lot about Denver, But I
(23:16):
would say it's more a validation of this Wolves team
that we saw all season long, that led the league
in defense all season long, and we didn't want to
believe in them in the playoffs because we hadn't seen it.
And this is just this is the way it always
is in the NBA. Fair or not we don't believe
(23:38):
in you until we see you do the ultimate, and
then when we see you do the ultimate and win
it all, we probably believe in you too much. And
I think that does apply. It has applied in this
series at various points. But really, to me, I think Minnesota,
no matter what happens in Game seven, for them to
(23:59):
win first to what they did last night. And remember,
their coach can't even coach the way he properly should.
And I've covered Chris Finch for a long time. I
met him years before he ever got to the NBA.
I feel stick for him that he doesn't have this
opportunity to coach in this series against the Denver team
(24:20):
he previously worked for. And so, you know, the Wolves
have undeniably been impressive. This was you know, I think
this was a series a lot of people looked forward
to because these two have looked like the two best
teams in the West all seasons, and we've ended up
in the place where this became just a seven game
(24:44):
heavyweight battle. But just we got here through a really,
really weird set of circumstances.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Mark Stein joining us here on The Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. He's Ryan Hollins the NBA Vet.
I'm Dan byer in for Doug hitting markup on X
at the Steinlin As. You just kind of broke down
how we view the Nuggets and how we view the Timberwolves.
Is that the same with the Mavericks thunder series? Or
is it a matter of Dallas the more veteran team
(25:12):
Oklahoma City really getting their first taste of postseason basketball
this far? Is it as simple as that with this series?
Is it Dallas just better? How is Dallas up three
to two?
Speaker 8 (25:25):
Well? This has been another one, Yeah, where I say
we've seen quite a use, quite a few surprises because
the Mavericks they're so defense first now and I think
Ryan would back me up on this. No, So for
years and years and years, you never talked about the
Dallas defense. Now when they won it all in twenty eleven, certainly,
(25:49):
Tyson Chandler brought a rim presence and a defensive element
that they hadn't had before, and Sean Marian could guard
you know, pretty much every position on the floor. But
you still thought of Visky first. And this is a
high octane team that can you know, it's the matchup
problems that navisky causes. That's what you thought of first
(26:09):
with the Mavericks. But this team, you know, Luka Doncic
and Kyrie Irvings, they have not been the every night
dominant duo that I was expecting in this series. I mean,
Kyrie Irving has been held below ten points twice. Luka
Doncic has obviously had well chronicled struggles until the masterpiece
(26:30):
he put together in Game five. So the Mavericks are
winning in a new way for them, and you know,
they just they changed their team dramatically at the trade deadline,
and so they've just really settled into this new identity
really really quickly. And I don't think Jason Kidd has
gotten enough credit for how much he's gotten out of
(26:50):
this team. But the only thing that matters more than credit,
he got a contract extension, and a wholly deserved contract extension.
When I look at the thunderside, I do think it's
an experience things and I do think that you know,
a lot of people will say, Oklahoma City had all
the trade affts, why didn't they go out and get
more size of the deadline or do something more dramatic.
(27:11):
But I really believe that Sam Presty and the way
the Thunder have looked at this is they wanted to
see these young guys on the playoff stage and factor
that into the evaluation as they figure out how to
go forward, to see how these guys adjust as they
move on to the big stag. Look, the series is
(27:32):
not over. I mean, Oklahoma City is very capable of
winning tomorrow night and taking it back home for a
Game seven. The way this whole second round is in
like you said, I mean, momentum has been so fleeting.
It seems to really swing game to game to game
to games. So I'm not writing the Thunder off. I
did think Dallas was the better team, the more ready
(27:55):
to win team coming into the series. But another feather
in the MAVs cap here. If they can finished this off,
they're doing without doing it without Maxi Kleiba, who really
is He would be their small ball five, and he's
much better equipped in a lot of situations to play
against Oklahoma City the way the Thunder play. So if
Dallas could win this series without one of their most
(28:16):
important big men, it is it is quite a quite
a coup for them.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Have we been fair to Nicola jokicch I don't. I
don't know if I've ever seen a more scrutinized player
with the accolades of Nicola Jokic, And if so, if not, why,
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (28:37):
If it's just a function of just now there literally
is twenty four hour a day chatter when the game
is not happening, and so there's just this NonStop discussion.
But I mean, I don't people in the league, anyone
I talked to in the league, with teams, coaches, players, executive,
(29:00):
whoever it is, I mean, I hear nothing but you know,
admiration for him and respect for how good he is.
And like within NBA circles, you don't hear anyone doubting
him or discrediting him. And you know, what he did
in Game five was just ridiculous. I mean, you were
(29:21):
a center, you would at the guard. I mean, you'd
be at the guard Jokic if you were playing on
this Minnesota team. So I'm sure you were looking at
the same and that wouldn't have been fun trying to
deal with him and all the things he can do.
So you know, the discourse is whatever it is. But
I think one of Jokic's great strengths is he tunes
it all out too Like, I just don't think he's
(29:43):
paying a great deal of attention to the noise either.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
We're gonna wrap it up with Mark Stein with this question,
joining us here at the Doug Gottlieb Show a lot
from the Tirech dot Com studios. It's obviously been an
interesting week for us on the show. Doug's now the
men's basketball coach at Green Bay. There's an NBA team
that's looking for a head coach, and that would be
the Lakers. JJ Redick is a top candidate for that job.
(30:07):
I've only heard positives on how it could work with
JJ Reddick. Is there is there a reason why maybe
we aren't being critical of of the Lakers putting JJ
Redick near the top of their candidate list to be
their their next head coach? Am I missing something? Mark?
Speaker 8 (30:23):
It's just I would I would say, I would say
around the league, Like, you know, basically the whole NBA
was in Chicago this week at the pre draft camp.
There is a lot of curiosity and you know, outright
skepticism about how do you put a first time coach,
someone who has never coached anything beyond youth basketball? How
(30:43):
do you put JJ Reddick in probably the hottest feat
in certainly it's the most scrutinized coaching feat in the
NBA and you know around the world. I mean, it
would be a very short list of head coach slash
manager position that you would say come with the pressure, expectation,
and scrutiny that coaching the Lakers does. So there is
(31:07):
undoubtedly questions and gpticism around the league about the Lakers
really do this. But you know, again, I think JJ
Reddick is best described as the early favorites. They are
going to talk to a lot of assistant coaches around
the league, and some of them, like James Barrego and
(31:27):
Kenny Atkinson, have been head coaches before. Some like Sam
Cassell and Chris Quinn have not gotten a head coaching
shot yet but have been in head coaching searches before.
So I look, I think they're going to cast a
wide net. They're in no rush. They don't have to rush.
The only other opening is the Washington Wizards, and the
Wizards are rebuilding team. They're not really competing with the
(31:50):
Lakers for the same candidates, and a lot of people
around the league think Brian Keith's going to get He's
going to get to keep the wizard's job anyway, so
the Lakers can take their time to try to find
the right guy. But no, if JJ Reddick is the
guy they choose, I think that's all we'll be talking
about is how does he step into that job As
a first time coach.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
He publishes a substack called the Steinline, and as the
co host of the podcast This League Uncut the fellow
Insteta Chris Haynes Find It where you podcast, Mark Stein,
appreciate it, Joy the games this weekend. We'll talk to
you next week. Mark.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
Thanks Tom good guy.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. I'm Dan Beyer.
He's the NBA vet Ryan Holland sitting in for Doug. Today,
Scotty Scheffler continuing to talk to the media. We'll actually
hear more from Scotty coming up after the top of
the hour to talk about the incident today that found
him in a Louisville jail prior to the start of
his second round. But first, it's time to play a
(32:50):
game time to have some fun, Ryan Hollins. And when
there's fun, there's always Isaac Lohenkron.
Speaker 7 (32:58):
This is game time, Golah on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Always ready for a good time. What's going on, Isaac?
Speaker 9 (33:06):
This game reportedly named in honor of former Fox Sports
radio co worker and colleague Rob Dibble.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
I got dibbs, all right, I'll take Norm Charlton, very
very good.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
He's got Randy Myers.
Speaker 9 (33:21):
Very good, Chris Sabo Bodez all right, now you can
just call him out.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Yeah, this is this Ryan. Basically, what happens is Isaac's
got a topic and we just try to grab DIBs
on our favorite of whatever. He's talking about.
Speaker 9 (33:37):
Teams remaining in the NBA playoffs. Who you got DIBs
on to win the NBA Championship.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
I'm gonna take tims on the Celtics, actually only because
I think that they have the best chance to win
the Eastern Conference Finals, which puts them in the NBA Finals.
And I'm not sure what's gonna happen with any of
the four teams of the West right now, So I'm
gonna get DIBs on the Celtics.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Right now, I'm gonna take the Nuggets. I think if
it comes down for when I trust them in the
game seven, Okay, experience I believe wins out. But if
it comes down to Nuggets, Celtics, they don't have anybody
for Yo Kic. They don't And you've got to show
me that the Celtics can get over the edge. They
(34:22):
get you all the way there and they haven't been
able to finish. But they're very talented. They have an excellent,
excellent shot at it this year. But I'm just not
jumping over.
Speaker 5 (34:31):
I got divs on the Nuggets.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
He's already got it too. Hollins just took I got.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Smart man, all right.
Speaker 9 (34:47):
Next seem LA Lakers head coaching candidates. Who you got
DIBs on?
Speaker 2 (34:53):
There? I got DIBs on Sam Cassell. I think that,
oh that would be great. I yeah, you can tell.
I set it with extreme confidence. I just think that
you have to have played in the NBA and have
had success to really make it work with Lebron, and
(35:15):
even then, I don't even know if it's going to work.
So I'm gonna get DIBs on Sam.
Speaker 5 (35:20):
You know what's interesting about this is the last time
I saw Ryan Hollins in person. I went to a
Laker game. It may have been No, it's a Quipper
game obviously, and I wanted to walk up and kind
of chum it up with Hollins because we had worked
together on the local station and he was kind of
given me the heisman, like I'm talking here, and guess
who who is talking to? Sell Sam Cassel?
Speaker 9 (35:40):
Whoa bitterness part table?
Speaker 3 (35:46):
Unbelievable, Jason unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
I'm sure you remember that exchange.
Speaker 8 (35:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:53):
I guess we'll find out coming up in the segments.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Anybody got DIBs at anyone else?
Speaker 5 (35:58):
I'm going to take DIBs on JJ Red.
Speaker 9 (36:00):
It sounds crazy, but crazy seems to be the way
this is going for the Lakers, So all right, I
think that's gonna happen. And our most controversial item of
the day Gatorade flavors. Who you got DIBs on?
Speaker 3 (36:15):
There?
Speaker 2 (36:18):
I got DIBs. Gosh, I can't believe I'm saying this
on fruit punch. Oh, I know, but I don't take
it most often, but I got DIBs on fruit punch.
I'll just leave it at that.
Speaker 9 (36:29):
Well, since the rest of you are so shy, I'm
gonna get DIBs on lemon lime.
Speaker 5 (36:32):
I'm can there be anything different.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Where I was going lime? Because no one wants orange.
Everybody gets rid of orange. You trade your orange for
your fruit fruit, two orange for one fruit punch or
one line. I guess, Oh, and you I can't go clear?
Oh gosh, you.
Speaker 9 (36:53):
Go blue beats the purple blue?
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Yeah, you kind of go blue over clear.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
The problem with blue and red is an adult is it?
Speaker 2 (37:00):
You're wearing that. You're wearing that around that.
Speaker 5 (37:03):
Kids can get away, But I don't know if I.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Can why I was hesitant with the fruit punch. To
be honest, if I'm out playing golf more often than that,
I'll take orange and grape. But if I really had
my brothers, it's probably fruit punch. And that's game time.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Game.
Speaker 7 (37:18):
This is game time.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
On The Gottlieb Show, I did not take Ryan Hollinds
for a line. Guy that is interesting and liking the
the yellow Gatorade or clear. He is Ryan Hollinds. I'm
Dan Byer. We hear from Scottie Scheffler and a rough
start for Caitlin Clark. That's next year on Fox Sports
Radio
