Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Sports Boom, What Up America Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio Today, coming to you from the music
city of Nashville, Tennessee, to be calling a game on Facebook.
I know it's UM. I might be the first ever
(00:21):
game analysts to be wearing a hoodie. They're like, yeah,
you gotta wear whatever. I was like whatever, Like yeah, whatever.
It's like, m how about a T shirt in a hoodie? Like,
We'll get back to you, so I'll let you know
before the UM, before the show is over, if I'll
be in hoodie. In the meantime, a guy who will
be in baseball cap this Sunday for the New York
(00:43):
Giants has been the talk of the National Football League.
You would think that Eli Manning is related to many
of my radio and TV brethren with the way in
which people have reacted to him being named the backup
quarterback are Actually he's he's taking some scout team reps
with the New York Giants. Of course, yesterday the news
(01:04):
broke during the show that Geno Smith nothing says tanking
like Geno Smith. Geno Smith would would start for the
Giants as the Giants want to see Geno Smith really
want to see Davis Webb. I want to see their
entire roster. And they went to Eli Manning and told
him that he would not be finishing games. And Eli
(01:24):
Man's like, you know, thanks, but no thanks. My streak
isn't about just starting, It's about trying to finish. That's
the beauty of what I've done. I'll be the backup
and so that's led so many you cannot treat Eli
Manning this way. Here's Ben McAdoo, head coach of the Giants,
on expounding on the Eli Manning situation. I understand the emotions,
(01:47):
I understand the responses. Uh, it's been a tough couple
of days. But we we feel we have to put
our emotions aside and U make the best, make the
best decision for the New York Football Giants and um
a piece with the decision. Again, No nobody says we're
moving on from from anybody. But when you're going through
a situation like this, this isn't this isn't my first
(02:08):
time going through it. Like you said, you know, there's
gonna be emotions involved, there's gonna be outrage, and you
have to stick stick to your decision and do what
you feels best for the organization. Remember that this is
an organization that has only made the playoffs once since
two thousand twelve, right once, so once in the last
(02:31):
five years they've made the playoffs. Obviously this year they
will not make the playoffs as well. And and you
look at like they have made the playoffs and we
we do have this in we have this knee jerk
reaction which we think, well, that means they're done with ELI,
Like that's not what they said and that's not the
reality of it. Now we don't know what they could
(02:52):
be done with ELI. But they won't know if they're
done with ELI until they see Davis Webb. And they
don't want to throw Davis web in there until they
give forever he like you know, they feel like they
feel compelled. You know, Geno can play some Let's have it,
give him an audition. Maybe we can trade Geno Smith
and get something for him in the off season or something,
or maybe he's good enough to be a viable backup.
(03:15):
But this is about Davis Webb. This is about Okay,
let's take the training wheels off and see if the
kid can can prepare and we can put him into
the game and oh yeah, by the way, it's about tanking.
Like all of these, like my media brethren, have lost
their collective minds. Eli Manning's thirties, six years old. He
(03:36):
has taken a savage beating. He gets rid of the
ball super quick because his offensive line hasn't been good,
his running game isn't good. They're not going to the playoffs?
Like what is the point of continue to throw Eli
Manning out there? Because you saw him win to the
Super Bowls? Because he hails himself the right way that
and and you. I almost feel like people feel bad
because they made fun of Eli Manning for so long,
(03:58):
for Eli Manning face, or for not being as good
as Peyton Manning, and now is I'm like, oh wait,
I know we made fun of him, but he's not
as bad as we made fun of How will they
ever know if Davis Webb can play If they don't
play him, how will they know what they have to
do in the draft? I mean, look, I get the
(04:20):
old school values of people saying we shouldn't live together
before we get married, but you know what you should
do before you get married. You should live together. I
do several of the things that annoy the hell out
of my wife. I don't know if you guys have noticed,
but I do this thing where I scratched the roof
of my mouth with my tongue. This you probably, I
don't know. You can't hear it on radio, but music
(04:42):
have you are you have been able to see that
where I do, I will scratch the roof of my
mouth of my tongue. Absolutely, I've seen it. And sometimes
you even just put your fingers. And my wife insists
that I have allergies, which is a possibility. I don't
like taking anything. I don't like taking any sort of medicine.
Maybe maybe I do have allergies. She's like, oh, you
have allergies. She take some out and I don't want
(05:02):
to take allergy medicine. I don't have allergies. You scratch
out of your mouth. I was like, guess because it itches.
Why do you think it itches? I don't know, so
I do that. Um, she says, there's a noise I
make when I chew. I also have a tendency to
use any toothbrush that I find that's weird. But why
is that weird? Listen, We've had three kids. There's not
(05:24):
a there's there's not there's there's no bodily fluids that
have not been exchanged between the two of us. But
I'd like to use mine. But if I walk in, like,
what's better? I mean, it's not like I don't wash
the toothbrush off after using it. It's not like I
just get get it all nastied up with plaque and
then I just kind of leave it as is and
then and then leave it wet for her, Like I
(05:45):
rinse it out thoroughly, and I don't do it all
the time. But it's not like that's the grossest thing
on earth. I mean, I'm not grossed out by ABC gum.
I'm not grossed it. But anyway, there are things that
I do that are irritants towards my wife. Now, I
don't think these things would have cost caused her to
not marry me, but we did not live together and
we have been together now for seventeen plus years of marriage. Um,
(06:10):
I just, how are you going to know that Davis
Webb is a viable quarterback unless you see him play
in an NFL game, you see him prepare. Can he
assimilate all the information that's being given to him? Kenny?
Can he can he do that? And if he can
do that, and and oh yeah, but like people are
(06:31):
freaking out, Hey, Matt hasseback was a really good quarterback.
His career was extended like six seven years by being
a quarterback whisper. Remember he was Andrew lux back up
and then was it? Was it last year? The two
years ago he replaced Andrew Luck and came in and
won a couple of games. This is actually kind of
par for the course for veteran quarterbacks who want to
(06:53):
stay in the league. You gotta be willing to go like, hey,
you're not the start anymore, well that sucks. We you
don't wanna do out of pair like I'm a starter
every day. Derek Carr talked about it earlier this year.
He said, when Matt Shob got pulled, they named him starter.
He didn't think he was better than Shob, and Schob said,
I'm mad about it, But you know what, from this
day forward, all I'm going to do is help you
(07:14):
prepare because that's what you've done for me. That's what
you're supposed to do. So we act like this and
we've never seen this before. The Nicks pulled Carmelo the
last two years at the end of the season, the Yankees, uh,
you know, got rid of Mark two Shara and got
rid of Alex Rodriguez to see what they're young guys
are gonna do. This is what you do. And in
the NBA, you play younger guys when you want to tank.
(07:36):
You're not necessarily tanking, you're not trying to lose get
nut tone guys to trick it off their foot. But
if you play younger, less experienced players, the likelihood that
you win when other teams you're playing against our poise
to try and make the playoffs becomes, uh, the likelihood
becomes smaller. So I just we it's so interesting that that,
(07:59):
and I'm not being critical of fans. Fans are supposed
to be emotional. Fans have hitched their wagon to Eli's
our guy. And the crazy thing is that many of
the Giants fans that are blown away by the fact
that Eli Manning is being pulled, the same guys who
have said and Eli Manning, he turns them all over
ton Eli Manning in the they don't even like Eli Manning,
(08:20):
but they just don't like being told that their guy
is no longer the guy. And Gino is going to
be the guy until Davis Webbs the guy. This is
how the business works. Tell the business works. I mean,
you know. I my first radio show, my first radio show,
(08:41):
national radio show that I did, was up at ESPN,
was with a guy named Chuck Wilson who is still
doing some radio um and some podcast stuff in Rhode Island.
Chuck was Chuck was one of the longest tangentifout the
longest like the original ESPN Radio Game, which is on
Sunday nights. It was a great show. I know it
(09:03):
because during my year in between UH playing at Notre
Dame in Oaklhama State, I went to a junior college
and I helped coach and practice with the team, and
a lot of times on Saturday nights or yes on Saturdays,
I drive up. I watched my brother's team play at
cal Poli Sandleis Obispo. Then i'd swing back through Santa
Barbara and I had my my high school girlfriend was
(09:25):
the cheerleader at Santa Barbara, and we'd hang out there
and then on i'd hang out with her on Sunday
and then Sunday nights, i'd drive back and I would listen.
And that's why I had already been in love with
sports radio, but I felt even greater love with sports radio.
So back in two thousand and two, Chuck was basically
assigned as my partner, and he had had a long
time partner beforehand. And there were other radio hosts at
(09:50):
the time who fought the new management in how they
wanted to do it, and Chuck did not. I'm sure
he didn't want to work at first with somebody who
was young and really really green and had a completely
different way of looking at the world. And he probably
didn't want to work for a boss that didn't appreciate
his style of radio and said like, no, no no, I
know you've done it for half of your half of
(10:12):
your life, but this is a better way. But you
know what he did, he did. He did the absolute
best he could. Because all of us who have our
own radio shows, at some point somebody's gonna go like, hmm,
somebody else might be better, or you might need a partner,
or I might need to do updates. What do you
(10:33):
tell your kids, like life's not fair, thatt me, it's fair,
or there might be actually a bigger plan in place,
and how you handle it speaks to who you are
and and fans and frankly medium members not taking a
breath and realizing that what's going on all throughout sports,
like the tanking thing is real. It worked for the Astros,
(10:56):
it's working for the Sixers, it's going to work for
other are teams that do it. And you're like, well,
I just I like Eli Manning and I think this
is he's handled himself well good. You know what he's
supposed to. Giving credit to Eli Manning for handling a
benching the right way is like you heard that Chris
Rock thing about about debt about dudes like, yeah, handle
(11:19):
my business with my kids like you're supposed to. Don't
ever say your babysitting when you're watching your own kids
and your wife goes out. Can't guys and babysitting. You're
not babysitting, you're parenting. You're not handling it. Well, you're
being a professional. This is your job. And oh yeah,
(11:40):
by the way, it's the giants job as well. To
look out for the future because the president isn't going anywhere.
What is gonna be What's gonna be proved by keeping
keep throwing Eli Manning out there. Nothing nothing. Guys are
just so emotionally tied to people that up watching or
(12:01):
cheering for they maybe they feel bad. Eli got a
bad rap and now Eli is getting pulled like, well,
I didn't want you to pull it. Do you want
you to fire him? I can't figure it out. Stuck
gotlip show. It's Fox Sports Radio. I want to get
to this Lebron thing. Man Um. Lebron James got ejected
(12:24):
last night, but he completely and totally deserved it, and
we got to discuss what he said about how he's
officiated and why he deserves to be officiated the way
in which he's officiated. That's upcoming next. But first, you've
heard me talk about the amazing shave I get from
my Dollar Shave Club Racer, especially when I use their
(12:46):
Doctor Carver Shave. Butter. Well, I'm here to tell you
that I'm never giving up my membership. In fact, as

I used Dollar Club Dollar Shaved Club for just about everything.

use car. Visit True Car and enjoying more confident car
buying experience. Pretty cool. The Gorman Boys, who of course
followed this show on Fox Sports Trader just stopped in
to say Hey, I forgot. This is like Fox Sports
Midwest here as Clay Travis hosts his show from Nashville,
(14:17):
and then the Gorman Boys also in Nashville, Austin being
their town. No, I did not have Hattie bees H.
Clay recommended a Mexican place and I liked it. Alaa alon, lot,
a lot did not hit the Goulds today. Mary and
Ryan Smith in on the ones and twos in for Ramos.
Let's do this one for Johnny. Let's do it for Johnny.
(14:38):
See the thing about that, Ryan, you might have gotten
that there's no chance for Ryan music. Got that that
reference to do it for Johnny reference that is, uh,
that's a that's a David movie reference. Do it for Johnny.
But in the meantime, uh, speaking of Clay, he is
reporting that this is from Clay Travis. Of course out
(14:58):
kicked the coverage. If you missed hour back and forth
my interview with him earlier in the week, download the
doug Otlip Show podcast. You can also hear Brad Stevens,
who was was on the show yesterday. We talked a
bunch of different stuff. It's great to have the Brad
stop by. Um. Anyway, Clay is reporting that that John Curry,
who's the athletic director of Tennessee, offered the Tennessee job
(15:23):
to Jeff Bram, who's the the head coach at Purdue,
who accepted um. Then Curry asked the chancellor of Tennessee
to approve it. The chancellor said no, sir. Curry went
back to Brahm with a lesser offer. In Brahm said, no,
Oh man, what a joke. Uh, what a joke. Oh
(15:49):
I got Tennessee. Oh Tennessee, you just beat you. Here's
the thing about Tennessee football, Like, I get they haven't
we put a lot of people in their stadium, but like,
what else is there? Like what give me the other
part of the sale? I don't. I don't really get
it right. Like Texas football, I get the passion, I
get why it's such a good there's players. Austin's a
(16:10):
really cool Nashville is a really cool city, but and
so is Knoxville in the lesser account. But like Austin
is an awesome city. Texas has like the most high
school football players as far as them California and Florida
like that, just that kind of all makes sense. And
they have history like Tennessee. Like, explain to me why
you think you're so much more important than the rest
(16:31):
of the world. I don't like. Ohio State has been
a dominant program and there's great players in the state
of Ohio. Michigan is the winningest program in college football history.
Like that makes sense. Florida, Florida State, even Miami, who
doesn't draw well, but that's where all the players are. Anyway,
what a dumpster fire ideal? Oh yeah yeah. Uh. Bron's
(16:53):
good though, of course, was at Western Kentucky before Purdue
for just one year. Took over a team and won
three games, won six this year. And of course there's
a star player zone, right um. Anyway, last night, Lebron
James was ejected for the first time in his NBA career.
Here's Lebron in the injection. Well, I think I'm one
of the league leaders, and pointing to Paint, I drive
(17:15):
just as much as anybody. It's like almost they trying
to turn me into a jump shooter. I can't be
a jump shoot I'm not a jump shooter. You know.
I watched the games every single night, and I see
jump shooters going to the line multiple double digit times
every night, and I'm not a jump shooter, and I
get fouled just like everybody else do so one time
going to the line one time, and you know three
times or four times, that's that's not That's not what
(17:36):
it's about. Um, they want to turn you intow jump
shooter because everybody's playing you to dry. Like, look, Lebron
James is not the only guy in the NBA that
throws back his head or that holds his forehead every
time he drives in there, or that yells and throws
up his arms. Um, James Harden draws a ton of fouls,
(17:58):
usually leads a league in free uh in in free
throws attempted, and he throws up his arms. And so
I guess you you asked a question. You're like, wait,
why does James Harden get more calls than Lebron James. Well,
it's fair to say that Lebron is known for selling
some calls, right for acting like he got crushed. You.
(18:21):
We've we've gone back enough and seen and seeing Lebron
hold his forehead. You know, like you go in there,
you miss the shot, you hold your forehead like you're
looking for blood and there is no blood. Whether it's
because he's a victim of super SloMo and reps actually
paying attention, whether it's because he's so pronounced, and how
he complains about it last night, he deserved to get suspended,
(18:43):
I mean to get suspended, to get kicked ejected, to
get kicked out of the game. You know, he thought
he got fouled. If you watched the replay of the
one that set him off, he didn't get fouled. And
while running up the court, he goes and he gets
way too close to an official, and then he he
obviously used a couple of the magic words, and the
guy had had enough and he got ejected with just
one technical, which you can, in fact do, but you
(19:06):
can't be the guy who's synonymous with throwing your head back,
with holding your forehead, with with laying on the ground
a little extra extra long and you didn't actually get hit.
I mean, this is boy who cried wolves stuff. How
many times can we see a replay to which it
did not look nearly as bad as Lebron sold it?
(19:27):
UH with without without questioning the validity of any call,
of any call, Harden leaves the league in in UH
free throw attempts. Then Jonas and Dakompo, who I believe
leads the league in shots inside the paint. Anthony Davis,
Dwight Howard. Dwight Howard gets hacked a lot, like Hi.
(19:48):
Damian Littard is an interesting one because he shoots so
many threes, but he also he only shoots threes or
right at the right at the bucket. DeMarcus Cousins per
zingis uh shoots a ton of free throw at seven
point to a game. But yeah, they do want to
turn him into a jump shooter. He does shoot post shots,
(20:08):
he does shoot midrange jump shots, like let's not kid
ourselves like Lebron James as opposed to Janice who can't
Janice who cannot shoot perimeter jump shots. He has no
jumper at all. He'll take a couple, but he really
can't shoot. I've never watched the game and thought, man,
Lebron doesn't ever get a call the rules of basketball.
Here's one of the things that people don't point out
(20:29):
about Jordan's versus Lebron. The rules have changed to which
it's very offense friendly rules, and he has the perfect
build for those type of rules, right because now it's
he creates the contact, he goes down plays downhill, but
it's called downhill basketball. Well, your momentum is all going
down towards the basket and you can't put a hand
(20:51):
on him. You can't hand check him out on the
floor to stop him. But because he's creating all that contact,
he didn't get as many as he plays bullyball, and
nobody likes a bully. Let's get you to Dan Buyer
and get you a quick sports update, Dan, anybody else
get pulled today in in the nfl A yesterday we
had two starters get pulled anyway today, Well, this is
(21:13):
what we have got right now for the National Football League.
Jameis Winston looked like he's gonna be back for the
Buccaneers to start against the Packers coming up on Sunday.
Dolphins quarterback Jake Cutler is cleared concussion protocol. He'll start
Sunday against the Broncos and Falcons. Running back DeVante Freeman
has cleared concussion protocol. He was able to practice today,
so Doug. While yesterday they were taking players out, today
(21:34):
players are actually coming back in except for Redskinstead and
Jordan Reid. He remains out, not gonna play tomorrow against
the Cowboys. Because of his hamstring injury. If you missed
what Doug said at the I don't know about eight
minutes or so ago, Clay Travis out kicked the coverage.
You can hear it here on Fox Sports Radio. Says
that Tennessee Athletic director John Curry did make a contract
offer to produce Jeff Brom. Brom accepted that offer, and
(21:56):
when it went to be approved by the Tennessee Chancellor
it was not. So then Curry offered a new deal
to Brohm of lesser value. Brom then said thanks, but
no thanks. In Tennessee is still looking for a head
football coach. Oregon State is found there's it's gonna come
in the form of Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith. He
will be the Beaver's next head coach. Smith quarterbacked Oregon
(22:17):
State for four seasons, including leading them to the Fiesta
Bowl into thousand. Speaking of the Great State of Oregon,
Oregon Ducks reportedly offering to give head football coach Willie
Taggert another year in his contract to remain with the school.
That's according to ESPN. Some ins and outs for the NBA.
Doug Tonight, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry in for the Warriors.
They're probable to play against the Lakers tonight, and despite
(22:39):
being under the weather, Paul George of the Thunder says
he's gonna go against the Magic, but the Sixers could
be without Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. Simmons is dealing
with an ankle injury. Well. Embiad could rest tonight against
the Wizards, who are playing a back to back after
beating the Timberwolves last night. I don't know, did you
see this one? Is just on Twitter? Who is this? Uh?
(23:02):
Andrews cciliano. Philip Rivers was asked about Eli Mannings the
decision to bench Eli Manning. Quote. I thought it was
pathetic that from Philip Rivers, So of course they'll forever
be tied linked at the hip because, uh, Philip Rivers
ended up benefiting from the fact that Eli man the
number pick, did not want to play for the San
Diego Chargers, draft a trade and probably quickly his He's
(23:24):
gonna have the longest consecutive start streak once Eli's benched,
Philip Rivers will have it in the NFL. Like look,
you know, there was a point in time to which
Philip wasn't playing well this year and they have a
couple of backups and Kellen Clemens had a terrible preseason,
and uh they also traded for um what's the what's
(23:44):
his name? He was at Ohio stated he won the
national hip Cardale Jones, who also didn't have a good preseason.
Like there was there was talk in San Diego to
which like, hey, if this thing goes bad and hurry,
we gotta figure out if we want to draft a
quarterback or not, like Chargers would have done it too.
I just I look, do I feel bad because Eli
Manning has been a pro, sure, but nothing is forever,
(24:06):
and when you're still under contract and they're trying to
figure out how to fix their team, I don't. I
don't think it's some crazy ask to to have him
sit down and and watch and by the way, stay
healthy could be the greatest thing ever for Eli Manning's career.
All right, let's let's let's get to the college football
rankings from last night and the College Football Playoff and
(24:28):
the Pac twelve Championship game. We haven't caught up with
him since I think the start of your Clay Hilton,
head coach of USC they won their division of the
PAC twelve getting ready for the PAC twelve championship game.
He joins us here on the Doug Gotlub Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Coach, how are you doing well? Thanks
for having the guess. Okay, so let's let me just
get your perspective before we get to the rankings last
(24:49):
night on your team, your regular season is complete, how
would you characterize your season? Um, you know, tendant to
being able to finish strong in November or second undefeated?
No member was very satisfying. Uh, you know, we've put
ourselves in position. You know, you really want to come
in here undefeated or with one loss. But in the
reality is we have two losses and have our last
(25:11):
opportunity to be able to put our best foot forward
to put an exclamation on stamp on our season with
eleven with eleventh win. So playing a really good Stanford
team that's very hot in their own right right now
should be a great game and one word looking forward to. Uh,
it's our first opportunity to have a chance to win
it and win that pack twelve titles is two thousand
(25:31):
and eight, and I know our kids are excited about it.
How different is Stanford now? From Stanford when you played
them second game of the season. UM very different. To
be honest with you, you know, I think both teams
have grown. Um where we have grown our offensive skill
and the maturity that has grown with us as a
football team. You see how they've grown, especially defensively. I
(25:53):
think they're playing wonderful football, especially the last seven games.
You know, the win over Washington and Notre Dame really
stick out to me. How well their defense played. Changed
a couple of things schematically that I think has helped
their personnel. And then the addition of of kJ Costello
down the stretch. Here you can see coach Shaw in
his play calling now mixing in both run and passed.
(26:16):
Where I thought he was UM leaned very heavily on
Bryce Love early in the season. He's doing a great
job of mixing it up. And you saw kJ throw
for four touchdowns last week against Notre Dame and in
a very balanced performance offensively. Look, your your team has
improved steadily. You've won your last four games, obviously coming
off the Notre Dame loss. UM, and but one of
(26:39):
the reasons you played so well down the stretch is
that your quarterback has turned the ball over less right,
Like he's cut down on some of the interception and
some of it was He's got a whole new group
mostly of wide receivers, completely different skilled position. And it's
also the first year to which he's been the starter
of the entire year. And and and you know, like, look,
I'm a little bit of Deshaun Watson. Were trying to
make some throws that maybe you shouldn't make because he
(27:00):
feels like he has to make plays when you watch film,
how much is Sam playing that definitively better or is
it just a case of receivers and luck that led
to the high interception numbers early in the year. No,
I think, hey, you know early in the season, and
I'm played quarterback, quarterback coach by trade, so I've got
(27:20):
a bias. I he's my kid too, so I've got
a little bias towards him. But when when I watch
it um as a coach, I see a group of
receivers and skilled players that you know coming into the season.
I know we we would go through some growing pains
as they grew up, and and hopefully we were getting
some kids healthy. Get us Stephen Mitchell healthy, get into
(27:41):
Daniel Moore to baby healthy, and then all of a sudden,
about halfway through the season, we got healthy and our
younger kids started playing really good Tyler Vaughans, Michael Pittman,
getting Daniel Morre to baby back, and all of a sudden,
you know what Sam had done last year up until
all the way here, I see him doing the exact
same things. But as we grew as a football team
and chured as a football team, numbers started getting better.
(28:03):
And now you look up and he's second in our
league and passing inefficiency, which is a pretty darn good
quarterback league. UM, and he's doing a wonderful job. He's
cut down on the interceptions over the last eight games.
I think he's throwing a total of three UM and
done done a wonderful job of leading our team. And
he does the most important staff to me, he wins ballgames. Yeah,
(28:23):
you know, like like it couldn't been couldn't But the
difference in him and Rosen. Rosen looks great and makes
some great throws, and at the end of the end
of the day, Sam's teams, you find ways to win.
When Rosen, who I think talent wise, everybody likes, and
I know there's other issues that play there at U
c l A. But you know they're five and six
and they lose. I want to ask you quickly going
(28:44):
back to last week, it's U c l a um
end of the first half, Like, look, he's in his
only his second year as a starter. How do you
how do you coach him when he makes an error
in judgment the way he made at the end of
the first half. People don't remember the play he had
just completed, twenty five yard passed Ta Burnett, got ten
seconds left first down, clock stops start, so he snabs
(29:04):
the ball, he runs him ound, makes a great play,
but instead of getting out of bounds or throwing the
ball away, so you kick a field goal to be
up seventeen seven and go into the half with a
two score lead. He ends up getting tackled U c
l A five like three seconds to go and the
clock runs out, and you know you can see look
in his face like, you know, kind of a brain
fart there. How did you coach him in that moment? Well,
(29:27):
we always talk situational football, and there's actually there was
fourteen seconds left on the clock and and as soon
as he broke contain, I said, oh no, because his
competitive spirit, his commpetitive fire. And it's the mark of
all the great ones. They always feel like they can
make the great play. And that's what you love about
Sam Donald. I mean his competitive spirit and competitive fire. Um,
(29:49):
it's one of the reasons that make him so great.
But he is he is a work in progress. UM,
that's what I love about him. As talented as he is,
he's still got a very very high ceiling. Um. He'll
tell you he's to finished product. And we learned each
and every with each and every rep, and in that rep,
being able to break contain and say, you know what,
it's not there, I'm gonna throw the ball away. I'm
(30:09):
probably gonna coach will probably give me another down, maybe
before this field goal, or I'll take the three points.
That's a learning lesson. And you know that's my job
as a as a head coach is to teach situational football. UM.
I put that responsibility on on myself rather than the kid.
His job is to know assignments and to learn those situations. Um.
You know, and when when we mess when we mess
(30:31):
one up like that, I'd rather put the pressure more
pressure on me than him. That's a voice of Clay
Hilton is head coach of the South Division Champions of
the Pack twelve USC eight one in League ten and
two overall, and you played only one non Power five
school the entire year. You look at the depth of
teams on your schedule and that has to be not like,
(30:51):
look we played, we play. Everyone we played is a
capable opponent every week in which we played them. Um.
I mean the the only team that you avoid, it
wasn't your fault that you would have wanted to play
with Washington, right, I mean other than that, you got everybody,
and you got Washington State on their own, on their
on their field. I guess the when you saw the
rankings come out last night, what was your immediate reaction? Um,
(31:13):
you know that we have another game to play, and
we continue building our resume and trying to put our
best foot forward. Um. You know, and and you look
up at these conference games, championship games, I think they're
gonna mean a lot to the committee. I mean you've
got six eight teams there that are all trying to
build their best resume and there could be a lot
of two lost champions. Um. So we just got to
(31:35):
focus on our job trying to go win a Pack
twelve title, put our best resume together, which I think
is in a really really talented football league that's got
nine nine Bowl eligible teams, that plays a Notre Dame,
plays of Texas, plays quality football teams on a week
to week basis, and and see how it pans out.
And I don't worry about things I can't control. The
only thing I can control right now is on Friday night,
(31:57):
and that's what we're working towards. As have been any
discussion about stance future, no, I tell you what. What
we've what we promised ourselves early and early in the
year before we even got started with the season, is
we would only concern ourselves about our team and our
team success. And then after the season, after trying to
win a championship, you know that then we would sit
(32:19):
down as with the family, trying to get as much
information as possible so he can make the best decision
from for himself. You know, if the game is so
hard to win games, especially at the college level, especially
at this level, that if you don't put all your
heart and soul in your focus into each and every
week just trying to win the game, you're not going
to have to worry about what accolades or individual success happens,
(32:41):
just worry about the team success. And I credit the kid.
He's lived in the moment, He's lived in the now.
He doesn't even want to talk about what the future
might hold. All he worries about is who were you
playing on Saturday? What do I have to do to
help our football team? And it's one of the reasons
I love him to death. I mean, he's a special kid.
Clay helping our our guest. If you could create a
(33:02):
perfect playoffs scenario, what would it be? What? How would
how would you form a playoff bracket to which still
makes the regular season mean as much as the regular
season means now, but also creates more of a true
championship format. Yeah, well each year. I think it's different,
to be honest with it, because don't have to be
(33:22):
a conference champion. We're good here. I think sometimes you
look up there, you may be ranked one through four
and you're like, man, I like this four team playoff,
And then sometimes you're sitting here at number ten, going, man,
I wish there was an eight team playoff. Um, But
you know, right right now, coaches are just responsible for
winning games and again. We don't worry about the things
(33:43):
that we can't control. We raise eighteen to twenty one
year old kids and and try to win conference championships
and see if it's good enough to get us in
that playoff. Um, all right, well listen, we wish you
the best of luck in the PAC twelve championship game.
It's been fun to watch your team play and pre
chet you spending some time this year on Fox Sports Radio.

Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, um Man is some
crazy stuff with these coaching hires in college football, crazy
crazy stuff. I I don't know how you feel about
this music. Um you're probably the perfect guy to have
this conversation with. Eric aine Is, a former quarterback at Tennessee,
(35:09):
had direct messages with Lane Kiffin, who of course was
on out Kidan. Kin has been on a bunch of
radio shows. He basically put himself out there. He'll take
any big time job he can he can get. But
Ange had kind of a nasty back and forth with them.
He played at Tennessee, h for Kiffin and UM like, look,
my my thing is, I'm come. You're I'm completely done
(35:31):
with you. If you take direct messages from anybody and
you put them on social media, like, I just feel
like that's private. Again, this is not can you do it?
Can you? Yes, you can drive your car with your feet,
but that doesn't make it a good idea. By the way,
the messages make Eric Aines look ridiculously mature, like a child.
But forget about all that. Rule Number one should be
(35:55):
if it's a if it's a text to you, or
if it's a direct message to you, what are you
doing making public and putting it on social media? Completely
and totally agree with you, unless there's like a particular
reason that something someone did something that's threatening or completely
crossed the line. And or you can take or you
(36:18):
can take somebody's name, like I know how to do it.
You can take somebody's name like a somebody text you
and and if somebody wants to you know, like you're like, hey,
this a source told me this, or this is what
a coach and you take their name off it and
you change it so nobody knows who said it. But like, look,
this is something I got from somebody who just trust
me on this. It's important, Like you can do that,
but like it's a private conversation. What are you doing?
(36:42):
Let's get to a game. This is game time. I'm
the Doug gott leap Ship. Game Time is of course,
brought to you by a Dollar Shape clubs. Everything you
need for your hair, skin, face, and shower. They get
you covered head to toe. They even have gift memberships
and gift cards available to give the club a try today.
(37:02):
It's a great holiday gift to the Dollar shape club
dot com slash gott lieb. What do you got for me, Doug?
Real news, there we goes and real news are fake
news today, Hey, why don't we keep on this Tennessee train?
Real news are fake news, Doug. If Tennessee can't come
to terms out of contract with Jeff Brom, the Valls
are likely to reach out to former l s U
(37:23):
head coach Les Miles. I'm gonna go real news are
fake news. It could become real news the way things
are going to be honest. But Eric Angel, you just
talked about who yes played quarterback at Tennessee. Now we
talk show host in Knoxville tweeted out yesterday that Miles
actually wants the job, but can't get an interview now.
As for Less, he recently sold this house in Baton
(37:43):
Rouge and bought a cheaper one in the Baton Rouge area.
As for Tennessee, there's also reports that they are talking
with NC State's Dave Doran about their vacancy. Yeah. I
think he bought a cheaper one because they're downsizing. A
lot of these coaches had these when their head coach,
They had these ridiculous houses. They have young kids and
they got the team over and they're like, damn, what
do I do at this house? Like I do? Like
Bill self's not going anywhere, but his house is ridiculous.
(38:06):
But now either're empty nesters and they have like a
ten thousand square foot house and Lawrence, Kansas like like
I'd like to buy. I'd like to I'd like to
be in a small house, but I just can't. It
was that his household for one point five million, and
then ended up buying a one point three million dollar
house a little bit smaller though, as you said, but
less Miles name could come up at some point if
if Tennessee can't find anyone. Real news are fake news,
(38:29):
Doug not wanting to risk the long term status of
quarterback Jameis Winston. The Buccaneers are delaying the return of
the quarterback from his shoulder injury. That's fake news, You
are fakes. That is correct. Winston practicing today and we'll
start against the Green Bay Packers coming up on Sunday.
That's a big game for the Packers. They can stay
in the hunt so that Aaron Rodgers will play the
last three games this season. Real news are fake news,
(38:51):
Doug rams quarterback Jared Goff has vaulted to the top
of voting for the NFL Pro Bowl. The top of
voting that is correct. Carson Wentz continues to lead all
players with over four hundred and twenty two thousand votes.
Tom Brady is second. Golf is actually fourth amongst quarterbacks
in his eighth overall. Interesting when it comes to balloting
(39:15):
for the Pro Bowl, I think a distant third from
Major League Baseball's popularity of voting and what the NBA does.
I don't think the voting of the Pro Bowl is
stuff that gets so much pubber on. I don't think
it does. No do. I think it should nobody cares about.
But again, I'm not an All Star game guy. Baseball
is our game, is the best. But even baseball, it's
our game. I'm not really into real news. Are fake news, Doug.
(39:36):
No player in the eight teen player Hero World Challenged
events coming up tomorrow his worse odds than Tiger Woods.
So no player is worse odds than Tigers. They're real
and they're spectacular. According to Bavada, Tiger is listed as
a thirty three to one favorite. That's the same as
Kevin Chappell and Charlie Hoffman. But no one has worse
(39:59):
where tigers actually at the at the bottom the longest
of shots along with Chapel and Hoffman, um clever, clever, clever,
writing to that that that that sorry, I may have
no it's good. You know you didn't confuse me. You
just got me. But you're good. You're good. What else anymore? Yeah?
I got one more. It's a it's a golf term,
but I think, uh, it's a it's a topic some
(40:20):
maybe can or can't relate to. Real news are fake news.
Dog PJA Championship winner Justin Thomas forgot that he won
a ten million dollar bonus for winning the FedEx Cup.
That's real news. They're real and the spectacular. Speaking of
Kevin Chapel, he's the one who asked Thomas this week
if he got the ten million dollar bonus. Thomas says,
I have no idea. He had to ask his dad
(40:41):
if the ten million dollars actually came in. That's when
you know you got a lot of right, I have
no idea. Like we didn't check her like I would
if I if I got ten million dollars, I put
in the bank just so that I could you know
what it says like do you want to balance that?
Like yes I do yes, Yes, I do it. And
that's the game. This is game time on the Doug
(41:04):
Gottlieb Show. So the NFL is finally ready to give
in on player protests. They have this big pool of
money and guess what the players can't decide. I'll tell
you up coming next in the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America? Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Another Day another name for Tennessee's volunteer. They
(41:29):
can't find the volunteers, can't find any volunteers to coach
their team. Oh boy, boy boy, uh more on that
to come. Justin Tucker is going to join us up
coming in about fifteen minutes. He's the kicker, arguably best
kicker in the National Football League, Steady as steady as
they come. Of course, he ended the Texas and Texas
(41:50):
A and M rivalry with a game winning walk off
field goal in Aguiland. If you didn't think he had
the right stuff, then you've watched him for the ball
to more. Ravens will ask him about their division, which
is weird. It's like the Steelers are eight and two,
but every's like and the Ravens one on Monday night.
Be like, kickers know all man, They're like they're wallflowers.
(42:13):
They know they know everything that's going on inside those walls. Um.
I found this story to be interesting. On Monday, the league,
the NFL, submitted to players the final draft proposal that,
according to documents, would contribute nearly one hundred million dollars
to causes considered important to African American communities. The NFL
(42:38):
hopes that this effort will effectively end the peaceful, yet
controversial movements started by Colin Kaepernick when players refused to
stand for the national anthem last season. This would be
a huge win for the players, right, like, hey man,
we've been we've been kneeling, we've been protesting because we
want change to be made. At some point, there has
(42:59):
to be tangible change. The only way there's tangible change
to be made is if somebody puts some money towards something. Um.
But here's the problem. Not all the players are in
agreement with the proposal. Some of the players who actively
protested since two thousand and sixteen are displeased with the
NFL's approach and planned to break from the players coalition
(43:21):
a group of roughly forty players who negotiate with the
league office over how its leaders have handled the negotiations.
Malcolm Jenkins and Kwan Bolden, regarded leaders of the coalition,
Miami Dolphins safety Michael Thomas and forty Niners safety Eric Reid,
tweeted um Wednesday that they are withdrawing quote. The Players
(43:42):
Coalition was supposed to be formed as a group that
represents NFL athletes who have been silently protesting social injustices
and racism. However, Malcolm and an quon that's Malcolm Jenkins
and Kwan Bolden can no longer speak on our behalf,
as we do not believe the coalitions belief are in
the best interess of ours. The NFL's multifaceted off for
(44:02):
earmarks eighty nine million dollars over a seven year period
for both national and public and local projects. According to
the documents, On the national level, owners this year would
allocate five million dollars, with their commitment growing annually, maxing
out at twelve million per year for two thousand one
through two thousand twenty three. At the local level, owners
(44:23):
would put up two hundred fifty annually, expecting players to
match that amount totally five hundred thousand dollars for each team. So, um,
here's here's been the problem with the protest is there
was there was no plant with like let's just protest like, okay,
what do we you know? What do we want? Isn't
(44:47):
that the protest chant? What do you want? Freedom when
we wanted? Now? When do you want? And justice when
you want it now? This is like the NFL players
are marching like what we want we don't know? When
do we want it yesterday? How do we want it?
My money? Where do you want to spend? No idea? Now,
(45:11):
the number a hundred million looks a little bit bigger
than it actually is. Right, it's a seven year deal
of at least eighty nine million dollars. That's not a
hundred million dollars, Like a hundred million is a million.
And keep in mind that the players have to donate locally.
That's that's where some of the some of that money
comes from, which I'm sure is a sticking point, like
you know, the owners can donate, but I ain't donate.
(45:37):
I mean because players It's like the guy who throws
the party my way. I through the party and I
gotta thrown for the food I through the party. Yeah,
but you didn't throw them for the food dots my house.
There's the cost, Like, that's not really the way it works.
So this, this to me, kind of signifies a lot
of the issues with the players. Is it's an it's
(46:00):
a lot like, uh, this weekend is the my what's
it called the my shoe? Um, you know my Mike
cleats my cause. Mike cleats my cause weekend. Everybody has
a cause. This is one of those that like, I'm
somebody that the the celebrations this year have been so bad,
(46:20):
most of them that it's kind of proven the point
of the NFL right now. They're like what everyoneer group
celebrations fine, and some of them, like people like Duck
Duck Goose, people go crazy that the sack races, like
the Kancie Chiefs that sack races then got beat. I
would never do a touchdown celebration when when I'm getting beaten,
(46:42):
what's the point spiked the football or handed to the
reff or put it in the give it to the
managers that you get your you can set it to
your mom. But there's so many there's such like you
get overly creative or a lack of creativity, or you're
just too cheesy, to which you're like, you know, I
kind of like the better when they just spiked the
football and they got in trouble for too many hip
(47:04):
thrusts that that's kind of the problem here with the NFL.
Like the other NFL, you almost wish they would have
had a hardline stance because at least the players were
then united. We don't want a hardline stance. What do
you want? We want social justice, We want justice for all.
Like Okay, here's a bunch of money, where do you
want it to go? We have no idea what you're
really gonna give us money? How are you gonna spend it?
(47:26):
No idea? This has always been the issue with This
is the issue with the players when it comes to
contract negotiations, Like do you ever ever ever look at
this thing? You're like, wait, why did the players? If
you look back to the last time they signed the
collector Partner agreement, they were less than a week away
from NFL owners having to cancel preseason games and maybe
(47:49):
two If they had to cancel preseason games, that would
have cost the owners a ton of money because those
dates are blacked out by stadiums, and everybody loses massive
money if they don't have the If they're not planning now,
players would have lost their preseason checks as well. But
the only way to make owners hurt is to hit
(48:10):
him in the pocketbook, right, So instead of agreeing to
terms early or instead of holding out late, they held
out and then stopped holding out and sign what many
people believe to be an okay or even bad deal.
But the truth is the owners have the money and
(48:30):
you don't, so at some point you gotta go to
work if you want to make that money. But the
reason that they can't ever get what they want the
you know, the the top level players want the cat
to be bigger, want bigger guaranteed contracts, whereas most of
the rank and file, most of the guys who vote
are making a couple of d grand a year and
(48:51):
they just want to find ways to elongate their career.
And you hear Michael Bennett talking about quarterbacks making too
much money, but quarterbacks actually make the league, so they
make a bunch of money, and quarterbacks want all these
protections so they can play and not get hurt. On
the other hand, in order to be protected. You have
to have offensive lineman practice more offensively. I'm like, dude,
(49:12):
my career short enough, short enough as it is, let's
cut down the practice time. That's why the first month
of the season so bad. They haven't practiced together, haven't
played together. But players, you have no middle class. You've
got rich players and low income rank and file guys,
nobody in between. And those two sets of players can't
(49:32):
get along. You have all these different players with all
these different causes. They can't really get along. That's why
they haven't Just you know, just one weekend you can
wear whatever shoes you want. And then with this deal,
you have so many woke NFL players that want to
do something to help the injustices of our society. And
(49:53):
when pressed, because they have the opportunity to get about
ninety million dollars, like, we have no idea exactly who
want to do We'll have to meet on that. That
feels like going into shark tank and uh asking for
ten million dollars value value your company? Like all right,
if I and then Mark Cuban or Mr Wonderful turns
(50:15):
around to you and says, okay, if I give you
ten million dollars, what are you gonna spend on you like?
I don't know. We'll have a meeting tomorrow on that.
Do you think the Sharks will do a deal with him?
I think you know what the answer is. I think
you know the answer. Justin Tucker from the Ravens to
join the show. Next. I'll ask him about competing in
that weird a f C North and staying in the
(50:37):
hunt for the wild card spot. That's next. But first,

UM Ravens fans are just spoiled and and frankly, the
Cowboys were had been spoiled until uh their kicker got hurt.
(52:07):
Or the Patriots have been spoiled for years. Right when Patriots,
you go from one great kicker to the next, like
you don't realize what it's like to be in kicker purgatory. Um,
and so the Ravens, it's basically get on the right
side of the fifty yard line and Justin Tucker gives
you a chance, and that's kind of been part of
their formula for success. He's had a remarkable beginning to
(52:31):
his career. Mentioned beginning because as much as he's synonymous,
but being an outstanding kicker, is only twenty eight years old,
and you can do this thing into your forties. Justin
Tucker the Ravens joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
How much do you pay attention to other teams or
other kickers struggles around the league? I tried not to
think about any of that nearly as much as uh,
(52:51):
you know what what I can control. What we can control, uh,
and that's what's going out to practice each and every
day that we get the opportunity and working on our craft.
Morgan Cox are snapper, Sam Cook, car putter and holder
along with Randy Brown and Jerry Rossberg, we all, uh,
you know, just focus on ourselves and all the you know,
the it's usually not a lot, but little things that
(53:13):
we can do to get better. Try not to worry
about what's going on outside here. Did you did you
see what happened with Drew Kayser uh during on the
Thanksgiving game? Uh? Not live, but UH was aware. Uh
And so you know, that's that's a putter to come
in and uh, you know, just just try to make kicks.
(53:36):
I mean, that's you know, it's not something that uh
everybody practices all the time. But uh, you know, hey man,
it's it's the NFL. So sometimes stuff happens. You just
gotta roll with it. Okay. So no, but he said,
but like everybody's killing him because he's you know, uh,
Novak goes down and he's practicing over there on the net,
(53:58):
and he said, there's a hole in the net. Now
did you see the replay of the kick that appeared
to miss the net? I could, well, so I could
totally believe, uh that there's a hole in the net
and the ball went through it. I mean, I'm I'm
more than I'm more than willing to give a guy
to benefit of doubt because I mean I've done that before.
I've kicked the ball into into the net and then
a piece of it, you know it's a velcrode on
(54:19):
the top, like a piece of it will come flying off.
And you know, in the NFL, there's a hundred cameras,
like somebody's bound to see, you know, if you're if
you kick a ball into the net or you know,
you picking your nose or something on the sideline, somebody's
gonna see it and you know, make an me am
out of it. That's that's kind of our our day
and age. But uh, yeah, I could totally believe that
(54:42):
there's a hole in the net. So I'm more than
more than willing to take his word for that. I
I believe that moving the extra point back Justin Tucker,
one of the great kickers in the NFL, the Baltimore
Raven joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, my
belief is that moving the kicks back is the greatest
rule change in the history of sports outside of maybe
the three point shot in basketball. And the logic is like, look,
(55:05):
you fight tooth and nail for six points. Why why
was the NFL just allowing an additional point to be
kicked through the uprights? And because the what's the make percentage?
Now it's in the it's in the mid nineties still, right,
But when you since you guys, it's sure something like that.
I know, yeah, there's there's a certainly been a marked
(55:28):
decrease in that percentage over these last couple of seasons.
But uh, It's one of those things that uh I
was against at first, and uh, you know, at the
end of the day, like those those decisions aren't up
to they're they're certainly not up to me. So so
you're still justin So you're still you're still against it,
(55:49):
or like if you now like, oh wait, this actually
makes my job more important and maybe more valuable, Like
is that is that a better Is it? As you've
kind of lived through this, as we've been a couple
of years since the change, do you still have the
same opinion of moving the extra points back? I definitely
still do. My opinion was it was both of those things.
It was that why are we going to just go
and make these guys jobs harder? Uh, you know, for
(56:14):
almost for no reason. But at the same time, the
guys that succeed uh with more challenging point after kick, Uh,
it increases their value and the what they can bring
to you know, what they can bring to the table
for their teams. Um, you know. So the key is
just to treat it like another like just another fuel
(56:36):
goal attempt. I mean and you know, my first several
years in the league, you could go out for a
p A T and you know you've definitely got a
lock in and make sure you put the ball through.
But the your your margin for error is is greater
just because you're much closer. Uh. But my opinion is
still the same. It's that you know the guys that
you know, like you said, the guys that do well
(56:58):
with it, Uh, you it increases their team's chances of winning.
Uh in a in a league where points are valuable
and games are played close. Uh, it definitely, it can.
It can definitely be a good thing for for teams
with guys that are able to make those kicks. Coming
off sixteen win. The Ravens are sitting there. Uh, they'd
be the last team in the playoffs if the playoffs
(57:19):
were to begin today. They don't up. Justin Tucker, their kicker,
joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. You've you've wanted
a shot at a seventy two yard field goal before
you you're you have a quest for a seventy yard
field goal? Like, what legitimately would you game on the line?
What is because we see the line now that they
superimpose what what honestly with the magical the magical line
(57:43):
that guarantees three points? Uh, anytime it pops up on
the screen. If you get there, you're getting three. Uh.
I love that graphic by the way. Uh uh you know,
so the the idea of you know, my quest to
hit a seventy yard or or whatever, like you said, Um,
that's all kind of taken out a context, you know.
(58:03):
So I'll just be clear and say that I want
to make kicks that I go out there, that they
put the put me out there for, um, regardless of
you know, the distance of the kick. I I think
the most important thing is coming back with three points
or one point. Uh. Making a long kick, sure it
would be really cool. That's where you know a headline
gets uh drawn out is or or a headline gets made.
(58:27):
Is when I say, yeah, I know I can make
a field goal from exit distance, but the most important
thing is to just make the kicks that I go
out there for. It gets turned into sucker thinks he
can make a eighty four yarder like, yeah I can,
but that's not what's important. You can make an eight
four yarder and there you go. No, I mean honestly, like,
(58:51):
what's the what's the furthest you've ever made it from?
Like I'm not getting into that, like I I appreciate
I say, I've said I I sound like a broke
record when I say that, I say I can make
a kick from however far away. Well, it's all dependent
on the game, situation and the conditions. Uh, you know,
like if you're if you're in Denver, the ball is
(59:13):
gonna fly farther, how much? How much? How much side?
You know, the natural gas law comes into play and
the ball is gonna go farther. It's more, you can't
be talking about what I say, you know, it's it's
a it's a matter of if the opportunity does present itself,
then I think we would just we would, we would
(59:35):
try to hit it from anywhere on the field. It's
got to be a really specific situation, but it could
happen justin Tucker joining us. Okay, but you're raven, you're
in the a C. You can't be talking about gas
laws now of a sudden, Patriot fans like see gas law.
Even Tucker knows about the gas law. Um, okay, So
we saw Dostkowski right, he kicked the sixty three yarded
(59:55):
with ease in Mexico City because that has all that altitude.
So do you get is it better, uh if you're
in a dome, because I've heard like dome kicking is
the purest like you can continue it's it's there's, there's, there's,
there's so many factors are eliminated or altitude. Which is
better for you kicking dome or altitude. It's hard to say.
I mean we play so few games inside. Uh, it's
(01:00:18):
it's hard to It's hard to say for sure. But
what I can tell you is that when we have
played in domes, like you know, we've we've been in
um we'll shoot just about every single one of them
at this point. But uh, like when we went through
Detroit a few years ago, or uh, you know we're
in New Orleans in the preseason or you know for
the Super Bowl, like the ball just uh, you know,
(01:00:40):
sometimes it's like the air is heavy inside, but I
mean the rest of it does get you know, taken out,
you know, the like field conditions and um and when
I mean unless they just really jack the A c up,
I don't think you really have to worry about too
much of a breeze and a dome, but kicking it
(01:01:00):
altitude and and you know what you said about about
Stephen making that kick in Mexico. Uh. I mean he
didn't make it because the altitude. He made it because
he crushed it, and he made it because that was
a great ball. H thing would have been good, you know,
probably any field, any any conditions. I mean, it was
just a a great kick. Um. But if I had
to pick one, I'd say just playing at altitude in
(01:01:22):
natural grass field in September, Like we're money. It feels
like you guys all cheer for each other, right, it
feels like because you you don't want any kicker to
go through the kicker pain. On the other hand, um, like, look,
there's still that you're you're a super competitive guy. Like
I tell people all the time, I knew a type
of competitive fire you had when I watched you and
(01:01:42):
the Texas Texas A and M rivalry with the game
winning kick on the field, Like that takes some lower
intestinal fortitude to do. So it's kind of be a
weird kind of juxtaposition because like, look like you're rooting
for Stephen Gustkowski to kick it pure. On the other hand,
he plays for the damn Patriots, Like what is that?
What are those emotions? Like on a Sunday when you
want your brethren kickers to make their kicks, but you
(01:02:05):
want to win the game. You're exactly right when you
you know, you call it that juxtaposition. It is uh,
it's it's kind of it's a little bit tough to
navigate sometimes because, yeah, you want to see guys do well. Uh.
And you know, the specialist community in the NFL is
uh is one that you know, everybody has an idea.
(01:02:29):
You don't necessarily know exactly how everybody's doing, but you
have an idea how everybody's doing out there, and you
want them to do well, uh, just because you know
it's a I don't know, maybe like what goes around
comes around type of thing. And like you said, you
don't you know, I mean I've I've had a game
where I've missed, you know, a kick or I've missed
two kicks, and you know that the feeling coming back
(01:02:50):
to the sideline is is I mean, this is really
not good. And you don't want anybody to you know,
you don't want anybody to have to go through that.
At the end of the day though, when you're competing
and you know you're fighting for you know your teammates
and you know they're fighting for you just to get
in position to win a game. Uh, you know you
you definitely, you know, you definitely want your team to
(01:03:13):
win more than anything else. You Know, everybody always says
kickers are a strange bunch. What about long snappers like
you guys Morgan Cox right, like he he's been there
forever since like two thousand and ten. Remember last year
he signed a big long term deal. Like what, what
is a long snapper? That's a guy you know they'd
say that you had one job. Like literally, they just
(01:03:33):
have one job. What is the life of a long snapper? Like, well,
the life of a good long snapper like like Morgan is, uh,
he does have more than one job. He is first,
he's an excellent snapper. Uh, and he's an excellent blocker.
Like That's one of the underappreciated aspects of Morgan's game,
(01:03:54):
is uh. In punt protection, he is you know, he's
he works hand in hand with every single person out there, Uh,
particularly Levine Uh where that you know they set the protection.
You gotta you gotta know what's going on. You have
to have you know, some you have to have some
football iq to execute at the lettl that you know
(01:04:16):
Morgan does and our punt team does. Uh. So that
you know, I just wanted to, you know, shout out
Morgan's uh athleticism there and his his uh wherewithal because
those are you know, that's one of the underappreciated, underappreciated
aspects of what he does and what he's able to
do for us. Um. But as far as you know
(01:04:38):
long snappers go, I mean, Morgan's is as cool as
they come. Man. He's He's uh, you know, got that
laser like focus at the end of the game. That's
that's really you know, great to be around. Uh. But
we also we have a good time, you know, we
have we have a lot of fun, uh throughout the
week and especially on Sundays. You guys had lost three
(01:04:58):
or four or four, winning your last two against the
hack and and the Texans. Right now you're at six
and five and look just even around this thing long
enough to know if you have a championship caliber like
locker room, if it if it feels like a special
year and it's kind of hard like it's an outsider
to tell, Like if you guys, if if you're you're
playing really good football or you're just playing against teams
(01:05:20):
last two teams that don't have their starting quarterback, Like,
what's your you take the temperature of that locker room,
what do you think about the current state of your team?
The Baltimore Ravens, we always think we're gonna win. We
we don't think about the opposite. Uh, you know, the
like it doesn't do it, It doesn't do us any good.
(01:05:40):
We always go into a game expecting to win. And
if you're not doing that, and you you know, you
find your way out the door pretty quickly. But you know,
I look back to when we dropped five out of
our last six games or something like that. I think
we dropped what three or four in a row, it was.
It was something crazy like that, and and you know,
(01:06:00):
everybody was talking about how we were backpedaling into the
playoffs and you know whatever else. But you know, we
all saw what happened. Uh, you know, Joe caught fire
and we went and won a Super Bowl. So, uh,
you know, this team, I think it's I I really
do think it's a It's a great group. H I
think We've got all the pieces that we need. And
(01:06:24):
you know, at the end of the day, it's about
just getting the next win. I mean, you can look
at our record and and you know our stats, but
none of none of it matters when you're lining it
up on Sunday. Al Right, next time we have you on,
we're talking Netflix and HBO shows and we'll dive into
your incredible knowledge of of of of TV viewing because
(01:06:45):
even though you do put in a lot of work,
you do have a lot of downtime and you take
advantage of that downtime the meantime he gived in through
the uprights and uh, and we'll see exactly what that
that true distance actually UH is for your for your
biggest kick, I mean time, Justin thanks so much for
joining us on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, thanks for having me.
It's Justin Tucker given us some of the art of kicking.
(01:07:06):
That NFL discussion brought you by True Car. You can
find out what other people in your area pay for
the same car you're looking for new or use visit
True Car and enjoy more confident car buying experience. Our
long snapper, who is underrated in his athleticism, absolutely is
Dan buyer. Uh, Dan, what are you working on? Long Snapper?
What are you talking about? I just I just meant
I just meant like, look, you're solid. People don't talk
(01:07:29):
enough about you. But when when you're you know, it's
like somebody only talks about Dan Dan Buyer when things
go wrong, right, Like when things go right, nobody goes like,
man that Dan buy it was awesome. They just take
it for granted. I don't want you to take it
for granted anymore. And kind of like Morgan Cox, you
have sneaky athleticism, paychecks aside. I think I'd rather be
a ref than a long snapper, Like I mean, take
(01:07:50):
the money, how can you take money on I'm just saying,
you know, as a player, you're obviously going to make more,
but if you're an official, more TV time, really more power,
more involved dot. It just just a way of looking
at it. I don't know anybody who wants to be
a ref. I've never understood that. I don't understand do
you like do you like that position? I've never understood
(01:08:10):
why somebody would want to be a ref in ump.
I just absolutely yeah, I know. I've long thought. I've
long thought. When I was at one of my both
of my other two stops, we've had discussions about different things,
like I did a so tonight, I'm doing a game
on Facebook. Right, should be fun and it's there's no commercials.
Me and Jason Napp, we're just kind of hanging out
(01:08:31):
watching this game West Kentucky. Theyre playing East Kentucky, Boat
Bluegrass and UM. Anyway, So when I was at ESPN,
I did a segment of the game from the truck
and I was like the director. I was calling on
shots and I was also kind of analyzed the game.
I've done stuff from the sideline. I've done you know,
stuff from UM, from from the bench where I'm like,
(01:08:52):
I would I would love to officiate a game because
I do think it's really like I do think it's
really hard. It's really it comes that you. Life comes
at you really fast, sports cabs at you even faster.
But I think it'd be cool to do. I don't
know if i'd like to do it for like twenty years,
but I like to do it. Well. I just I
maybe I have a tendency to be like, oh, well,
let it slide, We're good, and maybe that's why it's not.
(01:09:14):
I mean, I know, like, if you love the game,
you want to be involved and that you yes, yes,
I definitely would. I didn't really really follow him anyway. UM,
I don't know if I'd rather be a ref for
the Tennessee and football coach, but I could be in
line because they still don't have one volunteers continuing their search.
After reports that Jeff Brahm of Purdue will not be
(01:09:37):
their next head coach, there was a report that they
are talking you with NC States. Dave Dorn Of course,
Clay Travis about kicked the coverage here on Fox Sports
Radio reported that Tennessee did offer Brahm a contract, to
which he accepted. However, the chancellor didn't accept the terms
of the deal, and when a d John Curry offered
Brahm a lesser deal than Brahm, declined that was from
Clay Travis. But multiple reports say the Tennessee now being
(01:10:00):
on from Jeff Brahm of Purdue. Oregon State's gonna hire
Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith as their next head coach.
He was the quarterback of the Beavers for four seasons,
including leading them to the Festival in two thousand. In
the NFL, a couple of notes, Buccaneers quarterback Jamis Winston
will return from his shoulder injury and start against the
Packers Sunday. Jay Cutler cleared concussion protocol. He'll start against
(01:10:21):
the Broncos. No Jordan Reed for the Redskins tomorrow against
the Cowboys because of his hamstring injury and this from
New York Doug. Giants co owner John Merris said today
that he did have a conversation with GM Jerry Reese
about looking at other quarterbacks who was during that meeting.
Rees said that he had already talked with head coach
Ben McAdoo about the topic. Mara also said that the
team has decisions to make this season for this offseason
(01:10:45):
on head coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese. So
in other words, it feels like Jerry Reese said, Hey,
we gotta we gotta take gotta take a look at
the kid, right, Yes, yes, And that kid, I would
say would probably be Davis Webb, maybe not as much
Geno Smith, but the quarterback ane had been discussed between
Reese and McAdoo before ownership got involved. Yeah, I just
I don't I don't like the Geno Smith angel to
(01:11:06):
it and like Gina and he maybe Gino probably is
better than Davis Webb because he's played in the NFL longer,
But like, look, Gino, you're there because you are You
are the backup. You are ready to play. You are
more ready to play than Davis's Webb. We gotta see
if he has a greater long term future because we've
seen you be a starting quarterback. We've seen you, We've
absolutely seen seen it happen. We don't need you know,
(01:11:27):
could we could we watch you a little bit more? Sure?
I just I hate to hang around guy like, well,
you know he's been around here a long times. They
will give it to it, I think, yeah. And Gino
Smiths head remember he was gonna win a Heisman halfway
through his UH final season at West Virginia and that
was your Johnny Manzel one. But he was Gino Smith's
to win. He was gonna be the first overall pick
(01:11:49):
and then, unfortunately for him, everything since has gone downhill.
There's never been a point where you're like, hey, look
at what Gino is doing, and I think now it's
even going further downhill. With the Giant agreed, we do,
in fact agree. East Carolina head coach Jeff Lebo has resigned. Um,
that's interesting. Uh, Jeff Lebo, once upon a time was
(01:12:12):
the head coach of I'm gonna say East Tennessee State.
East Tennessee State, was that right? Yeah, he was in
East Tennessee State Auburn two for a little while. He
was in Auburn the year he took so I call you.
Tim Smith was his point guard. They went to the
n c A Tournament and he was going to take
the Iowa State head coaching job, and he turned it down.
(01:12:33):
He she accepted that he was gonna accept the job,
and his wife flew up and you know, they were
at East Tennessee States and um, I think that's not
in Chattanooga, but they're from the Carolina as he played
in North Carolina. And she got out the plane and
was like, I'm gonna say April and April in Iowa
is about what you think it would be, right, And
it was cold. It was just a cold day, and
(01:12:53):
she was like, when will the kids swim? Like, we're
gonna offer you a million dollars be the coach of
Iowa State. So he took the Auburn job where they
could win more, but it was a harder basketball job, so, um,
Jeff Lebo, We'll walk away. Jeff Lebo was one of
the originals you talked. You know, we've talked about Perry
Ellis being at Kansas forever, Evan Eschmeyer at Northwestern, Jeff
(01:13:14):
Lebo at North Carolina. I feel is like the original
where they started, where it seems J. J. Barrett. Yeah, yes,
that's a recent How many yearses J. T. Barrett been
in Ohio state? Seriously, doctor J. T. Barrett? And there
was a year that we didn't even know he was
there because he read shirted. So that's how crazy it's been.
But I think Lebo was one of the originals of
he's still in North Carolina. Yeah. When you come out
(01:13:37):
and you have doctor in front of your name, doctor
Jeff Lebo for three like, whoa what doctor Dr Jeff
Leeb has been there? Well, the honor you at parents Night,
that's a whole different story. That's uh, that's funny. Here's
John Marra asked if Ben mcadoo's job is saved. It's
kind of what you were talking about. There are no
guarantees in life. Asked to evaluate mcadoo's performance, mars said,
(01:14:00):
we're two and nine. I'm embarrassed about that. Nobody's doing
a good job. John Merris said that the idea his
team is tanking for a higher draft pick. Is bs
something you would never allow? Uh? John Merris seemed to
think that the plan they should have been that if
Eli Manning was playing well, he could stay in in
future games. No, not that he would definitely have to
(01:14:20):
sit in the second half. Apparently that wasn't presented to
Manning though, Huh, Like why why did you have to
tell him You're not gonna finish any these games, Like, look,
we're gonna start yet, and if things go poorly, we're
gonna put David's webbing. I don't think that's crazy, but
I think what they said is kind of hard and
fast rule, like, hey, he's we're gonna have other guys
finished these games and elves like and I love that Eli,
(01:14:42):
and he has handled everything well. But that's we talked
about this earlier. Eli handling being benched well is a
lot like the the the Chris Rock Chris Rock making
fun of guys who handled their business when they take
care of their kids, Like that's what you're supposed to do,
all right, you don't get extra credit for that. Yeah,
(01:15:03):
I provide for my family. That's what you're supposed to do.
He handled his benching like a pro. That's what you're
supposed to do. Clay Travis says he would prefer the
BCS of the college football Playoff. I'll tell you if
I agree or disagree. Next, what True Car. You can
find out what other people in your area paid for
the same car you're looking for, new or used. Visit
True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug
(01:15:27):
got Leaves Show, Fox Sports Radio, m M m M.
I got some college basketball picks for you tonight. In
the second hour of the show. I gave you two
yesterday they both covered I gave you Xavier Xavier. They covered,
then Produce came from behind against Louisville and they covered
You're welcome. Um, I just you know, every once in
a while and say you're welcome, say thank you, and
(01:15:47):
I'll say you're welcome, and it's okay. Um, we'll get
to those next hour. We got other stuff to come. Music,
We have other we have other guests calling us, uh
follow Daniel Jeremiah next hour, that's correct, as well as
former Cavaliers GM David Griffin. David Griffin's gonna call in.
So we got this is good stuff, excellent great work
(01:16:07):
by you and by Cindy Kats who books this show.
Can't wait for the third and find out of the show.
And look, if you're listening to our show and you're like, man,
I can't hang around for that, but I want to
hear it. Just download the Doug Gotlip Show podcast. You
go to our Facebook page and and getting my personal
Facebook page. You can go to um um the Twitter
feed as well, or go to Fox Sports radio dot com.
Every day at this time we bring back a portion
(01:16:28):
of a previous show on Fox Sports Radio. We call
it and now Clay Travis with something super interesting right
then that that's that's the kind of the premise here. Yeah,
Clay said this in regards to wanting the BCS back
as opposed to the College Football Playoff. We're talking about
(01:16:49):
this decision likely coming down to just ten people sitting
in a room, and if it's a tight decision, one
person may well have the entire power of the college
football Playoff in their hands if they don't know which
direction they're going to vote. That to me is absolutely
still crazy. I've been arguing for a while. I would
(01:17:11):
have preferred that we stuck with the BCS rankings because
at least the BCS rankings had some form of predictability.
You knew from one week to the next what might
happen if you had the BCS rankings. You also have
all the people on the A P Pole or whatever
it was, the Harris Poll, and all the coaches and
the Coaches poll, so you've got like sixty or sixty
(01:17:33):
five different people, and you've also got all of the computers,
so there's lots of different data points coming in as
opposed to just relying on the opinion of potentially one dude,
which is what might happen now when it comes to
who makes the college football playoff. Uh, I guess that's
a fair way to look at it. The problem is
(01:17:55):
that the one dude theory doesn't necessarily hold up those
one dudes or one woman or whatever on the committee.
They take in all of that data, they vote in
mass and like look, what what would what would a BCS,
what a bigger selection group give us, You'd still be
stuck with the same problem. There is no definitive answer.
(01:18:16):
Like Clemson's number one team in the country. They have
like go go through Clemson schedule and you tell me,
like they beat Yes, they beat Auburn. Absolutely, they're getting
credit and should be pointed out for beating Auburn back
before Auburn was as good as Auburn is. Now, who
else have they beaten? South Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, Louisville?
(01:18:41):
All were good wins at the time, But are they really?
Like if South Carolina is the second best win on
your you know, um, so you look through and you're like, well,
who did who do they? Yeah? They beat Virginia Tech.
That's a good win on the road, like I think
Clemson would be. If people voted whoever, whoever votes whoever
watches NFL at college football people or voter a people,
(01:19:03):
Clemson will probably get the benefit of doubt because across
the board a crazy athletic team, especially in the defensive front,
and they're solid at quarterback. But like, can you tell
me definitively they're better than Wisconsin, who's undefeated. I think
they are, But just because I think doesn't mean I know.
Do I think either or both are better than Oklahoma? Maybe?
Maybe not? Like I was, really, I don't think Oklahoma's
(01:19:25):
defense is great, but I think they have the best
quarterback of that bunch, and I think they're pretty talented.
I mean, like, look, we're arguing things like we think
Ohio State is good, but I Higer States so good.
Why did they get their ass kicked by Oklahoma at
home and by Iowa on the road? Why? Why? Yeah?
Go ahead? Music wasn't part of what the BCS equation
(01:19:47):
and numbers thing created that the fact that you CEF
would probably be one of the top teams in the
country right now since they're undefeated still, um yeah, but
they wouldn't be in the They wouldn't be in the
college you know, is he saying for the College Football Playoff?
They wouldn't get in. Um. In the old BCS days,
they would get a BCS bull birth so they would
(01:20:10):
play against some like when Central Florida last played against
I think Baylor in like I'm gonna say the Fiesta
Bowl was was where they played TOASTDS. Fiesta Bowl I
think is where they played, right. But if we're taking
four teams but using those four teams criteria based off
of the BCS formula, I think there's a good chance
that they would be pretty close to making that top
(01:20:30):
four ranking, would make a top rank. Really whould they beat?
Like again, let's just say Alabama, Like you can say
what you wanted by Alabama, but with Alabama beat Florida International, Maryland, Memphis, Cincinnati,
East Carolina, Navy, Austin, p S, m U Yukon, Temple
South Florida. But they beat all those teams. I think
the answers yes, absolutely, okay, so uh and and by
(01:20:54):
the way, Central Florida still has Memphis in the in
the Mayor Orkan Athletic Conference. Here's the hard part about
about UCF is if they beat Memphis, suddenly Memphis doesn't
become nearly as good a win as it is if
they lose to Memphis. Memphis ten and one on the year.
But um, you just can't compare those schedules. You just can't.
(01:21:17):
You can't compare, honestly, Wisconsin schedule to most of these
other teams to USC schedule, for example. I mean, like,
look at the USC has played and the depth of
of high major opponents they played as opposed to Wisconsin,
and who they played on the road and who they
played at home. You can it's constantly one tough game
this year Michigan at home against Michigan's second and third
(01:21:40):
string quarterback. But the BCS would give us the same
problems we have. Now there's a different way of giving
the same problems. Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network joins
the show. Upcoming next, I'll ask Kim his honest assessment
what the giants are doing, Like I I think I
get it, Like I do think they want to see
(01:22:01):
um Davis Webb. But why are they starting Gina Smith?
And are they in fact tanking? And how much does
Eli have in the tank? And is it is he
with me that outside of the Patriots, Like I'm not sure.
I don't like the charger as much as anybody in
the a f C Steelers included. We discussed next in
the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. What It's to
(01:22:23):
Doug Gotlib Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, this is this
is a hard, hard day in broadcasting when for the
third consecutive year place I used to work a place
that when at least when I was there, there was
a very collegial feel to ESPN. Third consecutive year in which, um,
(01:22:43):
now I guess triple digits and people will be relieved
of their duties. We've seen on air people off fair people.
I think it's mostly off fair people that you don't know,
you don't see UM, but I I do. And there's
a there's a balance there in life, right and and uh,
I had a friend who told me this about when
(01:23:04):
I wanted to get the Oaklahoma stage out. They look,
don't love your school because schools don't love you back.
We see we see college football coaches understand like my
gun do you just got a new contract Oklahoma State
four point five million dollars. He's talking to Tennessee and
reportedly offered seven million dollars and turned it down. But
why would you do that? You do that because like,
at some point you have to move because whether it's
(01:23:27):
agism or what you say and what you do may
not really matter. Uh in terms of success, Like there's
a there's a lot of reasons you can move on
UM in business and this kind of deals with the
the ESPN think there's a lot of people today who
like I know, who've worked there for over twenty five years,
(01:23:49):
that they're giving their pink slip today. And it's got
to be it's incredibly scary, right because you thought, all right,
this is my forever job. I'm good, I know every
buddy here, I know the game, know what I do.
I show up and every year you get a little
bit more in a raise, you're a little bit in
a bonus, and you're all in on the company. And
then the company's like, why would we keep you? And
(01:24:11):
we can hire somebody who's been in the business for
five years can do what you do, only do it
for cheaper, right, They have more energy to work longer
hours and do it for less money, cutting off, of course,
the relationships. That's kind of what you're looking for in
the NFL, and I feel like there's a little bit
of that in what's happened with Eli Manning. Like Eli
(01:24:33):
still pretty good. I don't know if he's washed up.
He's definitely not peaky lie. But I kind of think
it's reasonable at least what the Giants are doing. The
Giants like, well, let's figure out what else we have.
We know we have. They know they have problems the
offensive line. They're not idiots. They know they don't have
their top three wide receivers. They're not idiots. They know
they got to fix the running game. It's been a
(01:24:54):
problem for years. Remember the Giants in the last six
years made the playoffs once. They changed defensive coordinators twice,
change offensive coordinators and they change head coach, and I
think you haven't changed his quarterbacks. Like, what if we
removed that control group and see what happened? Like, I
actually don't think it's an unreasonable Now, how they delivered
the news and the decision to make and the timing
(01:25:14):
of it probably could have been better. I don't think
it's crazy. Let's bring in Daniel Jeremiah joins us every
week from the NFL Network. Also, I want to give
a ton of props to his uh, his podcast. I
download it, listen to it on long trips. He and
Bucky Bucky Brooks do an outstanding podcast. He joins us
here in the Doug Gottleip Show, Um, what do you
think of what the Giants have decided to do with
(01:25:34):
Eli Manning? Well, I think there's some lawyers to it. Like,
I'm kind of with you on this, Like I understand it.
I don't think the execution was was all that great
in terms of how they handled it. UH. To me,
I think the biggest outrage for people, the more I've
had time to kind of look at this thing, is
I think that the geno Smith that people saw and
(01:25:55):
they have the negative memories of Geno Smith. The fact
that it's Gino Smith that's replacing him, I think is
what some people have a tough time getting over and looking. Yeah, no,
look and Gino And I don't get the Gino thing either,
except for the fact that he's got he's got credit hours,
he's a vet, he's been technically the backup. All you're like,
all right, fine, we'll let It's like on senior day
(01:26:16):
when you let the senior start, knowing that you're just
waiting until the first pop opportunity to take him out.
And and like, look, Gino may think he's in a
different organization, but he's in the same stadium, same city.
He's got some negative sweat equity working against him, even
if he's a far better football player. Um, but isn't
it fair to think they want to see if there's
any value in either or both of those players. Two
(01:26:38):
one potentially handed off to Davis Webb in the near
future and not have to draft a quarterback. Or two
if they could use Davis Webb like the Patriots use
Jimmy Garoppolo and move him to get something. Yeah, I
just I mean, I don't think you're gonna put Joe
Montana into that that lineup right now with what they
have and you're I mean, it's just they're not a
whole heck a lot in front of end blocking for you,
(01:27:00):
and there's not a whole lot of opt too, So
I don't think you will be able to really showcase
anybody in these in these final few games. And to
be honestly, I don't know if you're gonna get a
real great evaluation of Davi's Webb when he gets into mixtures.
I'm kind of you. I think you know, here for
a game, maybe maybe two games, but I think this
all kind of leads to a game, given Davis Webb
(01:27:20):
a couple of games to audition, But I just don't
know how much as an evaluate on when you look
at what these guys are gonna be playing with. So uh,
it's a it's to me, look next year, I'll be
shocked if you don't have a new GM, a new
head coach, in a new quarterback. It's start over, um
And this is just kind of messy right now, But
it seems like that's kind of where all this is headed.
(01:27:41):
Where's the best fit for Eli? I proposed back when
they were oh in four or whatever or oh in
five like this ain't getting better without Odell Beckham Jr.
Without offensive line trading with Jacksonville. Because you've got Coughlin,
they obviously need a quarterback. Broncos gonna need a quarterback.
His brother went there and won a Super Bowl and
resurrected his career. Uh, Cardinals potentially could need a quarterback.
(01:28:02):
There's some other teams, Uh, Cardinals very quarterback friendly, playing indoors.
Denver's brother went there, and there's Jacksonville. Is there anybody
else I'm missing? Yeah? I don't think he's gonna want
to go to Cleveland. Uh So, I think Jacksonville is
the obvious one. This is everything they have already there
and which is familiarity with Tom Coughlin. No one just
makes two for it not to be the one. I
(01:28:25):
think we could see some other movement here too. We've
got some of these older quarterbacks you mentioned Carson Palmer.
Philip is playing great right now, but didn't start off
well this year. You know, how how does he really
want to stay in l A. We know about that
those uh stories that were there early on in the season,
and they're in training camp, so there could be a
lot of shake up and a lot of movement, and uh,
(01:28:45):
you know, I think they'll be putting a suitors for him.
I don't think he's a top ten quarterback anymore personally,
but I think he can be in that you know,
twelve to sixteen range and if you have a team
like Jacksonville has twelve to sixteen range quarterback and put
a ring on your finger. Danya Jeremiah joining us in
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. What's happened
to the Kancity Chiefs offense? Well, I mean, I think
(01:29:07):
you're you know, I've talked about this a little bit.
I think this is a danger zone of being creative
and cute. And I think it's probably true in any sport.
You know, you always want to be thought of as
innovative and creative. You don't want to be thought of
as somebody's being cute. And I think they've done that
a little bit. And I think the the other side
of it is, you know, as the weather gets colder, um,
playing uh, playing outdoors, the windows get smaller, Um, you
(01:29:30):
gotta have a little bit more arm strength. And I
think that's always going to be a limitation for Alex
Smith and I recognize all the things he does really
really well, but I don't think he has a big arm.
And I think you see this year after year after year.
He's really really good. But as the season wears on, Um,
the games get tighter, the weather gets colder. There's a
reason why you prefer size at that position, and he
(01:29:53):
didn't have it. Joe Flacco has all the size and
he used to have all the arm strength in the world. Um.
But yeah, like, I don't know how much more data
we need to be underwhelmed by Flacco and some of
his some of his performances. And I always feel like
that kind of running joke of is the elite. The
reason it's out there is because we know what the
answer is. Just nobody wants to say he's fine, he's okay,
(01:30:16):
he's whatever. Um, isn't that what's what's what in fact
is playing playing out? Yeah, I mean, look, I think
has a high ceiling. I don't think he I think
he reached it for one playoff stretch and he's reached
it on you know, some other occasions throughout the years,
but he hasn't. He's got a really low floor as well.
And we've seen a lot more of that in recent years.
(01:30:40):
Let's acknowledge it for what it was. He had a
tremendous run, one of the great playoff runs in that
Super Bowl March. But for the rest of his career
he's just been very ordinary, very average, And I think
there's plenty of data to prove that out Right now,
Dan Jeremiah joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show, Uh
Dak Prescott, how much of this is revealing who he
really is or how much of it is revealing him
the flaws in the play calling. Well, I think you've
(01:31:03):
got to be a little bit better around him, um
and and to be able to cover up with some
of his issues that he's had. So I don't put
it all on him. He's still such a young quarterback.
See a lot of guys early on their career have
some success and then struggle, and then this is where
you find out can they fight their way through it?
I think you're seeing it also, but nobody talks about
it with Marcus. Mario's had some struggles this year. We've
(01:31:23):
seen him be successful, we've seen him have struggles. Saw
Jameis Winston struggle this year. So I think this is
kind of normal. I think it would have been abnormal
for him just to go rolling along with no uh,
with no issues. But I also think it's safe to
say that, uh, you know, he's he needs the other
pieces around him. I use the trip the whole trucks
and trailers thing. I think he's more of a trailer
than a truck. I think he goes along for the
(01:31:45):
ride rather than leading everybody else and making everybody else better. Um,
and you take a big piece out of that offense,
they haven't found a way to replace it. We look
at records like it's impossible not to look at the
Steelers wreck and go, Okay, that's a good football team.
Then you watch him play and they let the Colds
hang around the Packers without without Aaron Rodgers, they got
guys running free and their and their offense is better.
(01:32:05):
It was better, But it's not like the Packers defense
is great. Um So, I mean, like, look, record wise,
the Steelers are everything they were advertised to be, but
performance wise, it feels like it's Levian and Antonio Brown
and then just a bunch of other stuff, Like what
am I missing on the Steelers? Why are they better
than I'm giving them credit? For Uh, you know, actually
(01:32:27):
I'm okay with him. I know that it wasn't pretty
to the night you let the Packers. They've been in
some emotional games lately. I just think you look at
the NFL year after year, and I'll find you the
good teams that that find ways when they're not their
best to win ugly, and I'll find you the bad
teams that brag about how good they looked at a loss.
You know, the Steelers find a way to win these
games when they're really not even playing all that great.
(01:32:48):
But we know they all they have the potential in
the ceiling to match up with the best teams in
the league are and raise their level. Uh, there's something
to be said for not being at your best, not
playing very well. Uh, that's what they did do the
three What what what are you doing with your phone
that all of a sudden the end of sentences, are
you turning your head away? Is it just tailing off
like it's almost like a fade out button with your phone?
(01:33:11):
Is that is that? Is that? Is that a trick
you're doing to make us listen to the early part
of your sentences more well? I like to I like
to come strong with my early points and I like
to tail off and just pay a little effect for
you here. I'm just walking around in the backyard. Man,
it's a beautiful day outside. It is it's I know,
it's a beautiful day in sunny southern California. It always is.
Um Okay, So Rams Saints, Rams bounce back all the look,
(01:33:34):
the Rams had some bad luck Cooper cup of the
big drop, Cooper cup of the fumble the week before,
but they did bounce back. What do you see from
Jared Goff and watching them bounce back and beat the Saints, Well,
they're awesome. One play action, I mean taking shots on
early downs I thought was a big part of their
game plan there. Um, you get predictable coverages when you
throw early on first down. I thought that a really
(01:33:55):
nice job there, got him into a rhythm early. And
you know, I thought they wanted the each of that
game was gonna be don't take your foot off the
gas because New Orleans can get cranked up and close
the cushion real quick, as we saw them do against Washington.
And I thought they stayed ultra ultra aggressive with their
play calling, especially on early downs. And and to me,
I think when you're a quarterback and your coach shows
that much confidence in a big game like that to
(01:34:17):
put the ball in your hands. I don't know what
the numbers are, don't have it in front of me.
I want to say threw at forty forty something times
and ran at twenty something times. So it was a
big game and they weren't scared. They weren't trying to
hid Jared Golf. They featured him and I think you're
seeing his confidence really grow. That's the voice of Daniel Jeremiah.
What about the Saints, um fan or not a fan
after having them watched them against the Rams defense, Well,
(01:34:38):
I I think everything comes out of home field for them,
you know. I think they're gonna be a different team
when you get them in Dome, and that's why it's
gonna be fascinating. I think there if they get on
the road early in the playoffs and have to go
to Philadelphia, um, you know, even if they had to
come back and play the Rams, I think that's gonna
be tough for them. But if they can somehow get
hot here and finish strong, only anybody wants to go
(01:34:59):
in there. There's no Secremy Drew does not have even
the same arm cowel he had when he was younger. Um,
and he's going to be much more effective and efficient
when they play inside. It is what it is. Yeah,
Chargers second best team in the a f C. I
wouldn't want to play him. I mean, if you look
at the teams from the a f C, you wouldn't
want to get in. Would be the Chargers. And you
(01:35:19):
look at the NFC. I know they lost the other day,
but somehow the Packers are hanging around there. How would
how would you like to be a nightmare and see
uh Aaron Rodgers come back right at the end of
the season. You gotta play them in the first round.
And you know he never It's not like he plays
with the chip on his shoulder. He's not a guy
that that would go in and beat a team that
has a better record. I got what he did last
year with the Dallas Cowboys. DJ great stuff. Enjoy saying
(01:35:39):
sunny Santiago and we'll talk to you soon. All right.

(01:37:27):
Fox Sports Radio. He is a host on Sirius xm
NBA Radio. You should listen to him because he's got
a ton of knowledge in regards to how, why, and
what's going on inside the association. He's David Griffin, formerly
of the Cleveland Cavaliers, their general manager. He joins us
on the Doug Gotlib Show. David, how are you, Doug
doing really well? Thanks for having me on UM. I
(01:37:49):
wanted to ask you you know you uh, you discussed
UM on your radio show and it's been picked up
nationally on how ultimately the trade of Kyrie Irving to
the Celtics won't be viewed as a good trade for
Cleveland because Kyrie is really really good, And the likelihood
is that, you know, in Isaiah Thomas coming off of injury,
(01:38:10):
maybe even the top draft pick for the Nets. Like,
there's a lot of unknown and we know that Kyrie
is going to play well and and and be the
focal point at least at some point for the Celtics offense.
I guess my question is dowing back even further, like
when did these when did the feelings of unhappiness professionally
(01:38:32):
for Kyrie first kind of rear it's rear its head
when you were there. Yeah, So first, first of all,
just to address the first part when I when I
was asked the question, frank I Sola actually asked me
the question on his show with Scalabrini. And when they
asked me, they said, do you think it will be
historically viewed as a good trade for Cleveland? And I
don't think it will be historically viewed as a good
(01:38:53):
trade for Cleveland because even if they were to win
a championship, even if Isaiah and crowder the perfect fit
in the short term, unless that Brooklyn pick turns out
to be unbelievably good, the likelihood is that because Kyrie
is twenty five years of age, and it's special talented.
They're going to continue to hear about how we can't
(01:39:14):
believe you traded Kyrie, and so historically, if the kid
plays another ten years, everyone's going to talk about what
a great deal of Boston got. That doesn't mean that
if you were playing the cards Kobe Altman and his
staff had, you wouldn't have done exactly what they did,
because they checked an awful lot of boxes in that deal.
So the point I was making, or attempting to make,
(01:39:36):
and obviously that poorly, was it's the length of time
Kyrie is going to be special that's going to make
the historical bent look bad. It's not the trade itself.
Um yeah, I think it's kind of similar that Griffin,
isn't it kind of similar to people? Uh well wait
a second. You traded you know, the number one your
number one pick to get Kevin Love to Minnesota and
(01:39:58):
now uh and now you you look what's happened up
in Minnesota in terms of like point, you're like, whoa,
you don't remember that at the time, Like we got
Lebron James and we want to win an NBA championship
and so you're not going to an NBA championship with
the nineteen year old wing as opposed to we needed
a versatile power forward who could guard, who could rebound,
who could wouldn't wouldn't, wouldn't need to be an alpha
(01:40:19):
with the basketball and and that's why we made that move. Right.
Isn't there some similarities to that trade? Oh? I see
a lot of similarities, and I think it's a good
point by you. I think again, the Wiggins trade is
going to be viewed as one for years and years
where people will say that we can't believe griff traded
Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love. Well, that's because Wiggins can
(01:40:41):
play five, seven and more years than Kevin. But when
the subset of criteria that you're using is we must
win a championship within the window we have Lebron James
and he signed a one year deal. You play the
cards you have to play. You don't look at it
in terms of jeez, how is this going to be
viewed historically? You look at it as we have a
(01:41:04):
chance to win a championship and we need to capitalize. Um. There,
you know when when you were fired by when your
contract wasn't renewed by Cleveland, Uh, Lebron put out a
really really nice tweet of you know, in regards to
his time with you. Um, but I guess you know.
My question is always like, couldn't he couldn't he do
the Jimmy Chitwood. Couldn't he have said, you know, I stay,
(01:41:27):
Griff stays, I stay, Griff goes. I go like, is
that is that too much to ask? Well, I'm really
gratefully didn't put me in that position because when when
we put out that it was a mutual parting, that
was absolutely true. So there wasn't a whole lot that
could have been done to keep me there, and there
wasn't much I'd have done to make Dan want to
keep me there. So when you're not lockstep together on
(01:41:47):
the vision of the future, the most important thing you
can do is is to separate and do what's right
for the franchise. And Dan has every right to want
to do what he wants to do the way he
wants to do it, And in my particular situation, it
just was obvious we weren't the right ship for each other.
So I feel incredibly blessed that there was no pressure
(01:42:07):
brought to bear on Dan to do something that maybe
he wouldn't have ultimately been comfortable with because I've seen
this said many times, and it's true. If ownership, front office,
and head coach are not on the same page, you're
doomed to fail. And I think in this particular situation
that was a blessing for everybody. It's it's honestly, it's
no different than in college sports. You know, it's like
(01:42:28):
one of the things Tennessee is still looking for a
football coach. Why because the a D, the president, the
boosters that the important owners are not all lockstep and
until you you you are not going it's it doesn't
mean you're not gonna win. It makes it prohibitively more
difficult to win when everybody's not pulling in the same direction.
Fair comparison, yeah, I think it's very fair. But I
think what makes it even more convoluted in the situation
(01:42:49):
that the university is who knows which donor thinks they
should be the loudest voice, and they can continue to
try to be the loudest voice and give more here
and there. In you you never really know who you
need to be bele holding too, as a as a
chancellor and an athletic director, it's a really complicated situation.
I would think running a major university like that. Um,
(01:43:11):
I'm watching Lebron and he does appear to be more efficient. Uh.
He complained about not getting calls last night, which I
think all of America rolled their eyes. Although he's only
twentieth and free throw attempts. Um. It feels though that
that he like his game has been fine. Some of
his defensive movements not great. It's the it's the rest
of the team. What do you think of their overall
(01:43:32):
roster compilation, as they've been dealing with injured players and
new players and trying to fit them in and only
now as it started to hit with their winning games. Well,
it's it's funny that it finally came out that Lebron
isn't getting to the free throw line that much last year.
At one point during the year, we made the league
aware of the fact in the way that we can,
which is through the league channels. They enable you to
(01:43:54):
utilize the system to question officiating, and we used that
in house system and try to explain that Lebron is.
At that time that we sent it in, I wanted
to say it was twenty four and free throw attempts,
but he was number one in drives to the rim,
which is it's impossible to be that. So I think
in fairness to Lebron, he doesn't get a terribly favorable
(01:44:16):
whistle from a foul standpoint. He may get some other
beneficial things, and on the defensive end, maybe he gets
away with some things, but I think he does get
hit an enormous amount of the time and things are
not called. So I think that's part of the issue.
Relative to the Cavaliers team as a whole, I think
Kobe Altman and his guys did a great job of
(01:44:37):
putting enough depth there. And ironically, because Derrick Rose has
been hurt, they're they're almost benefiting from that because it
forced them to go away from a lineup of Rose,
Wade and Lebron that may not have fit together very well.
Wade's now running point guard with that second unit and
they can continue to space shooters around the floor and
(01:44:58):
do what that whole roster was really it together, which
is playing space and pace and bang threes on you.
So they were being asked to do things they weren't
terribly comfortable with early, and I think because there's fewer
mouths to feed, it was easier to integrate the bench
and thyloon and staff ended up with perfect rotations right now,
and that's a huge part of why they're winning all right.
(01:45:19):
I don't want to ask you about Alonzo Ball. Obviously,
you know part of being a GM is player evaluation.
But you're not simply evaluating a player. You're evaluating all
the other factors, including how old he is, how much
time he's spent on the NBA floor. Here's the guy
who's never played pick and roll, he's never really played
solid defense, he's learning. Um. How much cause for concern
(01:45:39):
is there from your perspective as a former general manager
and a paid professional evaluator as to Alonzo balls first
year with the Lakers, I don't have a great deal
of concern at the moment because point guard, as you
know than anybody DOUG, is the hardest position to learn,
um to play. As you go through the levels and
as you raise your level, figure out how your role
(01:46:01):
is going to fit within. That's much more difficult for
a point guard than anything else. So I think you
have to be more patient with players that played that
position just as a baseline, and then you add to it.
This kid was hailed as the savior of one of
the most important franchises in our league, and he's playing
at home under the scrutiny that comes from having that,
(01:46:22):
plus a father who brings additional scrutiny to the situation.
I think if you look at his overall numbers minus
the shooting component, I think he's been everything you should
have expected him to be. He's He's just a kid
whose body hasn't even matured yet, and he's trying to
figure that part out let alone everything else he has
to deal with. So for me, I don't see signs
(01:46:44):
that make me concerned. What what I see as a
situation that's going to be very, very difficult for him
to ignore the noise in and really just focus on
his game. I know you gotta run, but I gotta
ask you one more and bead Or Simmons, if you
had to bet on one being a superstar longer, who
would it be? Well? I think just Simmons, because I
(01:47:04):
have more faith in the health situation. If you guaranteed
me Joel would be healthy forever, I would stay chote
well because what he does is, frankly I think revolutionary
for the big man position. I think what he's capable
of has never really even been seen on an NBA
floor before. If he's completely healthy. Um, I mean you
(01:47:26):
have to go back to the days of of Will
Chamberlain in terms of the dominance that guy could have
on Bolton's court relative to his his peers. But again,
putting that all together for the long haul and staying
healthy long enough to show it is is difficult. Here

in Dan buy or find out what else he's working
on in the world of sports. D what he got? Yeah,
we're right now. We have got word on Ben Simmons
and Joel Embid, both will play tonight for the Sixers
against the Wizards. That have been a question. Simmons was
a game time decision because of an ankle injury. While
there were some talk to Sixers could rest in bed
Tonightithers through on the front end of a back to back,
both starting tonight against Washington Warriors forward Did you did
(01:48:32):
you hear my um on on Cowherd yesterday? And I
probably had a griffin, But I don't know if you
know this. Ben Simmon shoots everything was right hand inside
the lane and shoot jumpers with his left hand. He's
a terrible jump shooter. So I propose, like, hey, in
the offseason, why don't you switch to shooting right hand?
Like he's ambered extras anyway? Why not? Yeah, that sounds
sounds simple enough. Sounds uh. I mean it doesn't sound simple,
(01:48:54):
But I mean it's like you keep you had he
had a year off to work on his jump shot.
I eat him play last year year. He's a year off.
He's not a good jump shoot. He's a great player
without a jump shot. Okay, It's like Peytonin is a
great player, didn't throw a great spiral. Fine, you can
do that, but to be a better jump shooter. What
if you shot him all right handed. Yeah, it's a
very good point, very good point. Do you think that
(01:49:14):
guys with enough reps can just become good shooters? You know,
it's like like the golf when you play golf. Some
guys used to have it, some guys never will. But
like if you put enough jumpers up in the off season,
do you think you can just become a good shooter.
I think actually you can become a good golfer. I
don't think you become a great golfer just because the
nerve it takes, you know, in terms of the pressure.
But I do think that golf is golf is night,
(01:49:37):
uh is is. There's very little physical ability it takes
to be a golfer. It takes a ton of mental ability,
and it takes a ton of repetition, the will as quality,
quality coaching. Um. I do think there are some guys
that they'll never like Janice and too Takompo, I don't
know if his hands are too big, his arms are
too long, like, I don't think he'll ever be a
(01:49:58):
good shooter. I just don't. Yeah, are some guys are
there are guys just two gunned up to which they can't.
Not gonna be a good shooter. Um, but I don't.
I think Simmons doesn't seem to have the physical attributes
to somebody who's struke. He's got big hands, but not
crazy big hands, long arms, but not crazy long arms.
He's got a decent looking shot, but it shot looks
good with right hand, so I'd go with his right hand.
(01:50:19):
Other NBA news Kevin Durant and Steph Curry probable to
play for the Warriors tonight against the Lakers. Who know
if Tennessee will ever get it right no matter how
many reps they have. Now seem to be moving on
from produced Jeff Brahm and could be focusing on NC
States Dave Dorin. There were multiple reports saying that Tennessee
was interested in Brahm but couldn't come to terms on
a contract. Clay Travis from Kicked the Coverage and you
(01:50:39):
can hear him here on Fox Sports Radio said that
the sides actually agreed on a contract, but it was
not approved by Tennessee's chancellor, and then when a new
contract was given to Brahm that was of lesser value.
Bram said no that from Clay Travis. Multiple reports saying,
now Tennessee moving on to possibly NC States. Dave dor
in Oregon State's gonna do it coach, it's Jonathan Smith.
He comes Washington where he was their offensive coordinator. It
(01:51:02):
was actually a four year starter for Oregon State at
quarterback in the late nineties and early two thousand's, and
some NFL notes Doug Giants co owner John Marrow saying
today that he initiated a conversation with youry Reese about
looking at other quarterbacks. It's their Reese told him that
he had already spoken with Ben McAdoo about doing the
same thing. Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler's clear concussion protocol. He'll
(01:51:22):
play against the Broncos. Jamis Winston back for the Bucks
against the Packers on Sunday. All right. That that's Dan
Buyer with what's going on in the world of sports.
You can also hear Dan's show Sunday Mornings before the
two Sunday NFL shows. Um, uh, you know, we we
we talked about this a little bit yesterday. I think actually,
uh Dan talked about a little bit yesterday um on
(01:51:44):
the show where uh Steph Curry said, in regards Alonzo Ball,
he's a rookie. He's going through ups and downs as
a rookie. He's a great talent. I think he loves
to play basketball, so'll be able to fight through things
and have a great career. I hope you don't judge
me off my first twenty games, Durant said. Alonzo is
playing like a rookie as far as learning the game,
finding the ins and outs of the game. It's slowing
(01:52:05):
down for him, picking his spots. He's figuring it out.
He's nineteen. That's what any nineteen year old would go
through in the pros. It's just a matter of him
being in l a where all the eyes and scrutiny
upon him. Ah. A lot has been made of of
his dad. He's not the first person the Peanut Gallery
wants to chime in and tell people how to play
(01:52:26):
the game. At the end of the day, he's made
shots shooting like that before. I'm sure he'll figure out
what it means in the NBA game. Curry was asked
about LaVar Ball and his comments of his surface motivation no,
Curry said, it's more comic relief. To me. You need
that from time to time. So they're kind of they're
they're not kind of they are. They're laughing at LaVar Ball.
(01:52:48):
They're laughing at LaVar Ball. I don't think. I like
what happens is we end up changing the argument. Yeah,
I think he's gonna have to change his jump shot.
I don't think that's gonna work. But I was think
he needs to change his body, and I think he
needs time and he is, he is nineteen. It's the
passiveness that UM in addition to other factors, not a
(01:53:10):
great athlete does know how to defend. Not comfortable and
pick and roll, you know. It's it's one of those
things to which UM NFL quarterbacks have this all the time.
Guys that play, they're like, well, look, he's played quarterbacks
since he's twelve years old. He's played in the spread
read system. You can like, yeah, when you get the
NFL like they don't do that. You have to be
(01:53:30):
under center. You gotta be able to learn a defense.
It's it's one of the things I think Jim Harball
is learning the opposite way, which is really hard to
have a really good pro style quarterback because you better
help became from a well coached pro style system, because
you're you're learning how to play the quarterback position in college,
and the reads are harder. It's just more difficult. The
(01:53:51):
same in the NBA. Like I think with LaVar Ball,
I think with a Lonzo Ball is going through is
what Syracuse guys go through all the time. Here's a
reason in the Syracuse said so many talented teams and
yet tell me how many guys they've had that have
really torn up the NBA. I mean, now it's like
Carmelo statistically has obviously these teams haven't one. I do
(01:54:11):
think that's part of it. Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Ronnie Psychly.
I mean, there's a whole there's a whole group list
of players that they've had that are very well regarded,
have been drafted highly, and yet have not panned out.
And a big reason is they've never played defense. Like
if you play zone, you're not doing you're not worrying
about guarding pick and roll, so you're essentially not playing
(01:54:33):
pick and roll defense. And then offensively, they have put
in some pick and roll but so they're further along
than some teams that don't, but they're also running some
really really average set. More than anything, though, it's defense,
like you have to know like you get well listen
regard to pick and roll by hedging or by icing
or like I've never I don't know any of this,
(01:54:54):
and you you can't just you It takes everything, takes hours.
It's the what was the Outliers was the book ten
thousand Now it takes ten thousand hours of work, Like
you can work ten thousand hours on the wrong things.
And then you get to the NBA You're like, wa wait,
I gotta work on pick and roll. And by the way,
Lonzo Ball has said time and again, like I'm a
(01:55:16):
I'm a gamer again, Dude, You've got to be a
practice er too. So yes, that he will learn to
practice and work on his game more. He wants to
work on his body more. Who have to change his game?
And but the thing that I think you'll you you
see when you watch is sometimes there's just not the
willingness to fail even though there's a desire to succeed.
(01:55:39):
We'll see tonight a fresh and rested Golden State Warrior
team expected to be full with the roster taking on
the Lakers. Tennessee is getting closer to finally finding their
next head coach. Kind of I'll explain next what True Car.

Doug Ot Live Show, Fox Sports Radio. UM, Little News
Today providences. Emmett Holts out for the year. He's got
dad's had some ab surgery. I think PC's playing at
home tonight. I was gonna pick them, but I'm not.
I got a couple of college basketball picks before you'll
get to But first, we got a bunch of stories
(01:56:21):
things going on in world sports. I want to make
sure like one of the things we try and do
is like, what's your takeaway if you missed our man? Uh.
Cindy Katz has done an incredible job of booking the
show tomorrow. Um, who would she tell me we have tomorrow?
It's really really good. We had Brad Stevens yesterday, right, Um,
(01:56:42):
Cooper Cups join this tomorrow, ran right, Yeah. We had
Dana Jeremiah, we have him all the time. We had
Justin Tucker from the Baltimore Ravens today. Uh, Dwayne Casey's
gonna join us tomorrow as well. So we've had just
unbelievable list list of guests you can down of the
Doug out Lip Show podcast and they'll be afraid to
rate it. The meantime, let's get you update on the
(01:57:03):
stories today stories at the present. Here's the press, the
press David Griffin of course of the Cleveland cap formulate
the Cleveland Cavaliers now have serious XM radio joined us
earlier on the show as well. What do you got
for me? And maybe Tiger Woods and Steve Bartman tomorrow,
but you'll have to tune in to find out if
(01:57:24):
they actually joined the show. Um that that would be great.
That's just a tease to get people. Would you rather
talk to Tiger Woods or Steve Bartman the Cubs fan?
Tiger Woods? Yeah, really interesting. We'll see how he does tomorrow.
The Girl World chaneling, But but Tiger Woods is also
he's a little bit like the Derek Jeter interview. Unless
you're he doesn't give you anything. Unless you know you're
Dan Patrick or something, he might give you something. Yeah, yeah,
that's fair enough. Um, let's start out in college football,
(01:57:46):
because it looks like Doug Tennessee is moving on from
producer Jeff brom to be their head football coach reports
saying that Tennessee meeting with NC States. Dave dorn You
touched on it earlier in the show, Clay Travis saying
that there may have been a contract that accepted by
Brom from Tennessee A d. John Curry, but that the
Tennessee chancellor shot down that deal and then when another
(01:58:07):
offer was made, Brom didn't accept that contract because it
was of lesser value that from Clay Travis. But anyway,
it seems that Jeff Brom going to Knoxville not likely
to happen, as Dave Dora now could be the target
for the more of a defensive guy, right he I mean,
he kind of cut his teeth in the defensive side
of the ball at Wisconsin and at Kansas. He was
at Wisconsin before we get the Northern Illinois job. Was
(01:58:29):
great Northern for like two years, and he's taken NC State.
They bottomed out his first year after Jim O'Brien left,
and then he's gone like four straight bowls. Like he's good,
he's solid. I mean, yeah, he's he's good. Hey, you know,
I don't know is he gonna win there? Like I
don't know the flash or the splash that many want
Tennessee to take. I don't know if you'd get it
(01:58:50):
in Dave Doran, but we'll see Oregon State going to
one of their former quarterbacks as the school's new head coach.
Remember that that period of Oregon State football that was great.
It was the late nineties early two thousands, went to
that Fiesta Bowl where they took on Notre Dame with
the quarterback of that team. Jonathan Smith the new head
coach at Oregon State taking over for Gary Anderson. Yeah
(01:59:15):
he does, Yeah, he does. Um. You know the thing
about Jonathan Smith, uh is he started eight years old. Obviously,
as you mentioned, a former quarterback, and uh, he's also
a I think he's a so cow guy. Yeah, he's
He went to Glendora High School, which is they produced
h Tracy Murray, Cameron Murray, my man Adam Jacobson went
there for a couple of years. So he has ties
(01:59:37):
in southern California. He's worked for Chris Peterson at Boise,
he worked for Chris Peterson at Washington and you look
at Chris Peterson's influence, you can buy and Chris Peterson
were playing for did you play for Ericson when he
was at Oregon State or did he play. Yeah, So,
I mean I think all of that makes sense. And
I think if your Oregan State, you gotta you gotta
(01:59:58):
get somebody on the way up better than get someone
in the way down. There was some talk of them
reaching out to a couple of the fired head coaches.
I like this move. I like when young guys, offensive guys,
you need a ton of energy to get it go
into Oregon State. And Jonathan Smith has done a great
job with that with that Huskies offense. Well, remember this, Doug.
This was a flashback. The assault charge against Tisman Trophy
(02:00:19):
winning quarterback Johnny Manzel has been dropped. Remember it was
two years ago, almost two years ago. He was accused
of assaulting his former girlfriend. He was facing misdemeanor charges
of domestic violence, but those charges were dropped after he
completed terms of an agreement that he made with prosecutors
a year ago. Yes, so that doesn't mean that he
didn't do it. It It just means they're they were dropping
That doesn't mean he did do it, but he wouldn't
(02:00:41):
have had to. He wouldn't had to do community service
or go through rehab unless they felt like some of
his behavior, uh fit in line with what he was
accused of. And we're on what two full seasons of
no Johnny Manzel in the NFL. I mean, I think
the idea of a comeback is probably moot, unless he's
willing to go to Canada. We're gonna have our first
weekend with about Eli Manning in a long time, and
(02:01:01):
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers weighed in on Manning's benching today.
I honestly thought it was pathetic. He's been out there
turning ten straight games with no telling how many bumps
and bruises and injuries for his team won two Super Bowls.
Uh m vps. You know the respect he's had in
the locker room over the years, really respect he's game
throughout the league. You feel like the guys earned the
opportunity if they are decided, in fact, to to go
(02:01:23):
another directs. You feel like he's earned the opportunity to
finish it off. That from Rivers today, Yeah, I don't know.
I just I kind of don't get to finish it
off thing. I mean, I I under like, I understand
the pride machies moo of a quarterback. Hey man, I
started I want to finish it. You know, we saw
that a couple of years ago. Remember when the Patriots
were struggling against Um against the Chiefs. There was the
(02:01:45):
back and forth as should they take Brady out at
the end of the game and put put Garoppolo in?
And then they of course somebody asked Bill Belichick, you
if Tom Brady's job was in jeopardy, to which he
kind of Riley smiled and laughed at him, you know,
as we all did. Um you know, could he could
they send they by the way, they didn't say they.
I think a lot of this is what happened in
(02:02:05):
the messaging, you know. Did they say, hey, look we
want to play that, we want to take a look
at these other guys, and he was like, I don't
want to do it. Or do they say we're going
to take the look these other guys. We're gonna let
you start and you might not finish the games. And
he's like, well, no, I don't want to do it. Um,
I think it's reasonable to take a look at other guys.
I just do. Nobody thinks our offensive line is good,
nobody thinks they're the wide receivers are good enough. Nobody's
(02:02:27):
putting all the blame on Eli Manning and nobody's saying
he has to be done with the Giants. Let's just
take a look at some other dudes and then probably
circle back around Eli. Jay Cutler comes back for the
Dolphins this weekend against the Broncos, Bucks getting Jamis Winston back.
A report from ESPN says Cavs Garters aya Thomas could
be back as soon as mid December from his hip injury.
That from Brian Windhorse, Yeah, as soon as, which probably
(02:02:49):
means a little bit later. Right, there's some sizeable breaks
in the schedule. I would expect him back in January,
and then you gotta figure it's gonna take a month
or two or maybe even three months to get him
fully integrated as to how and where he's supposed to
be on both sides of the floor. But they need
him on the floor, not because they need him for wins,
but he's got to know where he's supposed to be
and what he's supposed to be doing if they want
(02:03:09):
to win a championship. And finally, dog pulls forward. Nico
Merritage says he's accepted the apology of teammate Bobby Portis
after Portis punched Merritage in the face in practice last month. Yeah,
but supposedly Meritage was the one who was being the
being the tird, right, I mean, that was the story,
was that they wanted to trade Merritage because they didn't
like Merritage. Was the one who was put the ultimatum
(02:03:30):
down to yeah, put put put the ultimatum down. Did
he wanted he goes or I go? He did? He
did the he did the opposite ship. That's the press
back get out there and pressed. That was the press,
all right. So check out my game on Facebook. I'll
be doing a game on Facebook. I'll give you some
picks because we can do that on Facebook. In the meantime,
download the podcast. This is the Doug Outlive Show.
