Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Boom one Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come into you, alive and direct from the City of Angels.
Welcome in. All right. By now you've probably heard the
news of the day that Rick Pattino is on a
(00:22):
leave of absence administrative leave from Louisville. Uh that that
appears to be a mere formality, were the interim president
at Louisville announced that earlier today. A matter of fact,
let's play that for you. Here's the interim president at Louisville,
Gregory Postel. The allegations in a criminal investigation are troubling
to all of us. It is vital for this university
(00:45):
to strictly adhere to n C double A rules, Duane,
and nothing would be a tacit endorsement of unethical and
criminal behavior. Alright. So in other words, look, we all
know he's going to be fired. He has a clause
in his contract act that he has to be given
ten days notice. And those these are they're just allegations.
And there is the possibility, believe it or not, there
(01:07):
is the possibility that Rick Petino didn't know. Okay, there
is of us, but at some point it doesn't matter anymore. Right,
at some point there's enough smoke to where you end
up seeing fire. And because we're just coming off of
a scandal in which there were prostitutes helping recruit and
sign players at Louisville under his watch, whether he knew
(01:30):
or didn't know, like, at some point the buck stops there,
so he and Tom George likely to lose their job
in the very near future. I'd make this as the case.
I believe Rick Petino's actually the best basketball coach we've
seen in modern college basketball. He's gone to seven Final four's.
(01:50):
He's won two national championships both at Kentucky Schools Kentucky
and at Louisville. Remember he took Providence back in the
eighties to the Final four. He's a better exit no
coach in my opinion, than Mike Sachowski. Schewsky obviously has
stayed away from the phray in terms of n c
A violation, never went to the NBA, where Rick Pettino
(02:12):
was deemed to be a deemed to be a failure.
But nonetheless, Patino has been remarkably successful at a lesser
job Providence turned around Kentucky from their own n c
A issues to make them a National championship, essentially handed
over another National championship team to Tubby Smith. I think
he's a better pure x and no coach than than Zewski,
(02:34):
and he has better kind of former player feel than
a Roy Williams. He's evolved as a coach, He's changed
his style, he's changed his location, and everywhere he's gone,
he's one in game out of game. The problem becomes
(02:55):
this ends up being the last chapter in the book.
No matter what we want to say about Rick Pettino,
we can't get away from the fact that this is
how it ends. It's it's Bob Knight, right Like Bob
Knight was an incredible coach, an unbelievable coach that hundreds
(03:16):
of coaches would drive from thousands of miles around to
come hear him as a clinician when he was at
West Point, when he was at Indiana, when they were
dominating the Big Ten and go into the National Championship.
But he did not evolve, and how it ended there
is still a source of bitterness to him. He went
to Texas Tech, where he did a relatively good job
(03:37):
actually better than good job. But in any left mid
season and went to be a commentator. And the end,
the last chapter of that story has so much negativity. Remember,
Bob Knight was such a curmudgeon on TV that there's
a there's a good portion of sports fans who don't
know Bob Knight as the dynamic personality and national championship
(04:00):
and coach from Indiana. They look him as a grumpy
old man, a kind of a bully. Same thing with
Rick Pettino. He's like a caricature of the character which
took over the basketball landscape. He was an expert in conditioning.
They played full court passable. He was ahead of his time.
(04:21):
Rick Pettino had the New York Knicks pressing and shooting
threes before it was cool to shoot threes. His team
with the Boston Celtics was tanking because they had two
lottery picks, way before tanking was cool. They just didn't
get Tim Duncan and he drafted poorly. But instead of
that being the story, how we craft that last chapter.
(04:44):
The inability for so many across so many sports to
just walk away. Our lasting images of Rick Pettino is
him in that ridiculous football jersey on college game day
two weeks ago. I mean, that's not even a sh medium, right,
that makes Affliction shirts look baggy. That's how tight that
jersey was and how uncomfortable it was to see a
(05:08):
sixty five year old man who looks like he's had
some work done facially. I don't know if it's botox otherwise.
Like again, he's like a caricature of a famous basketball coach,
with the perfectly cut suits and the cut. He didn't
have to he could have gone legit. In many ways,
(05:30):
college basketball is a lot like the mafia, Right, it's
a lot like the mafia. They do keep trying to
reel you back in, but there are times in which
you can go legit. You can cut ties. I mean
in the there will be other dominoes to fall. I
don't know if you've been following this, but one of
(05:51):
the ten people that were arrested yesterday, a gentleman by
the name of mural Code, was second in charge of
grassroots basketball for a d He came from Nike, So
yesterday Adidas took a hit. Today, Nike's offices h Nike
grassroots people were subpoenaed. In other words, he's probably gonna
turn into people who fired him. That's what happens. And
(06:13):
so this becomes the tip of the iceberg. And we
just have Louisville, but there's other schools likely to followed.
Remember Kansas is an Adidas school. We'll see U. C.
L A used to be in Adidas school. Like, I'm
not making accusations, I'm just making easy parallels, Like wait,
they're just helping out Louisville. They're not helping out anybody
else where else where else are these smoking guns? Andy Miller,
(06:35):
the NBA agent, had his offices rated yesterday. And Andy
Miller is alleged to have you know, given players money
in order to keep them in school, knowing eventually they
would come back to him when they left school. Like
these not the last, This is not the last Dominoes
to fall. But Rick Pottino won a National champiship a
couple of years ago. One the entire thing without a
(07:00):
ton of talent, like Gorgy Jang was in terms of
NBA talent, that's his best player. He didn't need it.
He could have gone legit. He could have said, at
how need any help from anybody recruiting? We don't win.
I mean that's really what happened to Billy Donovan. Billy
Donovan when he first got it going at Florida, who
(07:23):
knows who he used, you know, in order to to
get some recruits to kickstart the program. But then once
he won back to back national championships, he didn't need it.
He washed his hands in those top twenty five recruits,
those that I've told you there's a like a ten
percent at best rule of recruits that have their hand out.
You don't need those guys. And by the way, you
(07:44):
can win in college basketball out with four or five
year guys, perfect example of North Carolina went to Final four's.
Those guys aren't one and duns. Those guys aren't the
top of the top of the top. You have a
better chance of winning with older kids that are a
step below that that that don't come in as entitled.
So with Villanova one with but Tino could have gone
(08:06):
legit or he could have walked away and none TV.
One more job, right you see it in movies, right,
one more job. I would just pull off one more
job then we'll right off into the sunset. They always
get caught in that one more job, don't they. I
(08:27):
mean Michael Jordan's should have had the greatest end to
his career of any of the ground. John Eway won
the Super Bowl and some people will tell you, well, look,
Elway won the Super Bowl. That's the absolute peaked walk out.
Michael Jordan hit the game winning shot on the road
as the buzzer expired in Salt Lake City to win
(08:49):
his sixth NBA title. And when the NBA Finals m
v P holding the follow through that should have been
it six or six dropped the mic Jordan's out, But he,
likes so many others, couldn't, and instead he had those
two years with the Wizards y which I've chosen to
(09:11):
click and delete for my memory, but other people cannot.
Other people cannot. I mean Peyton Manning, I guess went
out on top, but the truth is he was a
shell of himself. Anybody who saw Peyton Manning his last
year seven touchdowns, it was the nineteen receptions. Whatever was
no nine touchdowns, seventeen receptions like Brady and Belichick could have.
(09:36):
Brady could have gone out on top. But everybody wants
to this. This is the one more syndrome. There's one
more syndrome. If you've ever played pickup basketball. You know,
one more you get that. You play pick up all
you play like four or five games in the morning,
and you've got good sweat going and you're running the court.
You're on the main court. And then you he's like,
(09:56):
all right, this is the last game in your mind,
and you win. You're like, oh, all right, well, I
got thirty and I gotta be home at ten and
I can get a nice tea, I can shower. You
start to untie your shoes, and you thought everybody else
was getting ready to go as a couple of guys
in the gym they haven't played, like, hey, man, hey guys,
let's run that back one more. You got your shoes unlaced,
(10:18):
you already take took off that sweaty shirt. You're like, hm,
I think I'm done. Now, come on, man, come on man,
just one more game. What happens in that one more game?
Somebody always gets hurt. The game is always bad, and
in the back of your mind you're always thinking, I
just should have gone home. Rick Pettino in two thousand.
(10:41):
Right now we're left with the last two Rick The
last three Rick Pettino stories are prostitutes recruiting players. The
creepy shot of him with college game day in the
sh medium tighter than affliction football jersey and paying a
kid a hundred grand and being summarily are losing out
on fifty five million dollars remaining in his contract. He
(11:03):
didn't have to do any He could have just been legit.
One twenty games not competed for national title could have
fallen the sword. Hey, I don't want to pay I
don't want to cheat on pay any players. I'm just
gonna coach, my coach a good ball team, a bunch
of good student athletes. But instead mafia did that. Mafia
mentality keeps bringing you back in that one more game mentality.
Let's run that back one more time, and somebody always
(11:25):
gets hurt. In this case, it's the legacy of By
my estimation, I think he's the best basketball coach we've
seen in the last twenty five years. Did everything well
except no one to walk away. We'll turn our attention
to the NFL, as Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network
will stop by. I gotta figure out on paper, and
(11:49):
I know games are not paid on paper, they're played
inside TV sets, But on paper, the Steelers should have
the best offense in the league, but they don't get
his thoughts as to why the Steelers are misfiring to
this point. Next, but first, I want to talk to
you about the next big thing in fitness, bull Frog

(13:17):
Fox Sports Radio. All right, we'll get back to the
Rick Patino college basketball scandal, and I will I iterated,
and I will continue to red right or a few
people iterate, A lot of people red rate um that
Patino will not be the only Domino to fall. But
because he's the first, and because of his prominence and
the fact that he's a member of the basketball Hall
(13:40):
of Fame. Um, it is a uh if you got
that is a big skin for the FBI before their
investigation is in fact, uh complete, or before the charges
have been levied. But the investigation is on going. The
n c A just became aware of this. And of course,
Rue Patino is not official. He been fired. He has
(14:01):
been put on official leave, but all reports, all signs
point to his firing, his dismissal in ten days, as
his contract stipulates he must be given ten days warning.
Let's welcome in Daniel Jeremiah How's an outstanding podcast with
Bucky Brooks, who also joins us that you can download
you see him on the NFL network, and he joins
us now on the Doug Golics. Let's turn to the
(14:23):
National Football League. Uh dj um. In college football, we
were told it was Donald, it was Rosen, and it
was Josh Allen or or or maybe even um uh
Mason Rudolph. But Mike Leach, who's getting ready to prepare
for Sam Donald, says Donald's not close to being ready.
(14:43):
Do you agree? Uh? No, I don't agree. It's you know,
coach Leach is always going to speak his mind. I
love that about him, But I mean, I just I
don't I don't see it the same way. I think
that that kids got a chance to be really good,
really early. When he gets to the next level, he said.
I think he's mature, really just kind of mentally together
(15:04):
for a kid his age. I get a kick out
of everybody thinks that one eighteen year old after the
next is ready for the NFL. I think that's laughable.
At the rate we're going. Uh and just for one
year now, there'll be some casualties with those eighteen year
olds that get selected to go, and I mean to
be terribly brutal, it would be literally literally destroy our lives.
His argument is that, uh, that guys get rushed in
(15:26):
too soon, leave college too soon, and so they're not
ready when they get to the NFL. Yeah. I think
he took a specific question about Sam Donald that kind
of went in a real broad direction with it. Um,
so yeah, lucky to me. Ideally, you like these guys
to get their thirty plus starts, some of them, you know,
play as true freshman. You can get those in three years.
(15:47):
And Donald's case, you know, we'll see what he ends
up doing at the end. But at the end of
this year, he's gonna have close to thirty starts, I believe. Um,
thank you started with nine, nine or ten games last
year and a chance to start thirteen or fourteen games
this year, So he'll have people have a lot of
games under his belt. It won't be like he's a
one and done basketball player. All right, Let's get to
the pro game. The Steelers lose in Chicago Bears, which
(16:10):
on the surfaces surprise, but maybe even more surprising is
that though the Steelers are two and one in the
year and they have a dominant win over the Vikings
uh and uh and and a win over the Browns
to start the year. The fact is that we all
had high hopes for their offense, that this would be
the type of offense putting up big numbers, especially early
in the season. Why isn't their offense clicking nearly as
(16:31):
we thought it would Well. I think people are realizing
that the run games not just about, you know, being
in great shape or having good players. It's there's a
rhythm to the run game. This is there's a rhythm
to the past game. And when you have a running
back that's not there through training camp, you don't really
have your rhythm. And I don't think they've hit their
stride yet with the ground game, and because of that,
(16:51):
they haven't been able to get as many deep shots
down the field as they'd like because they haven't been
dominating on the ground. It kind of works hand in hand.
When they can run the rock like they wy do,
you're gonna open up some big windows down the field
and you'll see more chunk plays. But right now they're
they're not quite as efficient in the run game. How
much of it is Ben Roethlisberger not being as good
as maybe his reputation, uh would would deem him to
(17:13):
be well. I think this is an interesting year for
this entire oh four class. Uh you know, like Eli
has been very up and down, Philip Rivers is not
playing well, and then you look at Ben. I watch
you got like nine games in a row now in
your three yards. So that whole class is a little
bit of a warning sign here with that group. Maybe
this is the end here. Pretty yeah. I saw the
(17:35):
same thing with Philip Rivers the three first half interceptions,
but also skipping balls under throwing people. I mean, it
feels like like there's a lot of things wrong with
the Chargers and their inability to to win games. But
the defense played well enough. It was the offense specifically,
you know, operator error at the quarterback position. Like I'm
more concerned. It sounds like you're more concerned about Philip
(17:56):
Rivers than maybe anyone nationally has has has discussed, no question,
And I've been a huge Philip Rivers fan and I've
I've made the excuses for him for a long time. Hey,
you know, they offensive line haven't had a run game
cranked up, they can't stay healthy, They've been just entry
routled throughout the last couple of years, but at some
point in time in the game the other day, you
(18:16):
just gotta go, man, he's not playing well. He's not
playing winning football. And I think if you pressed him
on the issue, he would agree. Daniel Jeremiah joining us
from the NFL network, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
UM Seahawks going to Tennessee, and they had a nice
drive at the end of the first half, but for
the most part, the offense is just not there, and
even the defense. You know, you get to this point.
(18:39):
We see this in the NBA, right when when guys
age and they can't cover anybody anymore, then they try
and start a fight, right, which is a little bit
of Richard Sherman. You know, he could have gotten thrown
out as he had. He had the late hit on
Mariota which which frankly missed Mariota, but he also had
a personal foul which he went took off his helmet
and really gave it to one of the officials. But
(19:00):
it does feel like whether it's the frustration of the
offense of the frustration of the defense being a little
bit long in the tooth, there's some frustration in Seattle
how fixable are their issues. Well, I just think the
offensive line not going to be able to get fixed.
I don't think they have the personnelity get it fixed.
So that's always going to be an issue for him,
you know, for the rest of this year. And defensively, man,
(19:22):
you know, they've they've they've hung their hat on the
fact they're gonna be the most physical unit on the field,
and they just got absolutely punched in the mouth by
Tennessee and they weren't. They were not the more physical
team on either side by the line of scrimmage. And
I think that's where you say some of that frustration come.
It wasn't even that they were losing the game. I mean,
this wasn't you know, a couple of deep tip ball
or things kind of going their way. They lined up
(19:44):
and just smashed them. So I mean that's where I
think some of that frustration came in. The Dallas Cowboys
go into Arizona on Monday night and win. The game
was tied at the end of the third quarter, but
they get enough separation. Uh And and look, the Cardinals
should have taken taking advantage and hadn't early leading that game,
which they did not have was that game more about
the Cardinals being in rebuild mode whether they know it
(20:05):
or not, or the Cowboys fixing some things. I think
the Cowboys are fixing some things and they're getting close.
And you can watch it in their run game. You'll see,
you know, they'll see three or four guys just mauling people,
latching and moving people with lion scrammage and you'll see
a bus and sometimes it's not it's not an offensive line,
it's a tight end, it's a back but they've kind
of just had one, just one little thing off and
(20:28):
then you see glimpses when everybody's on the same page. Uh,
they can they can get after you and start mulling
you again. So I'm pretty bullish on them to get
rolling here and get on a little bit of a
run because they have the personnel. It's just a matter
of them all uh playing well at the same time,
and I think that's gonna happen. By one concern would
be when you watch Deaz and Witten man, they can't
(20:50):
run a lick. They cannot get away from anybody. Now,
Witten has the craftiness and at that position, it doesn't
that doesn't it doesn't matter as much that doesn't matter.
It off. No, but I saw it. I saw a
Week one to Daniel. I saw a Week one as well,
and I mentioned people like no, no, it's it's Generas Jenkins.
He was looking like, no, des Bryant can't run like
(21:11):
an elite wide receiver anymore. He doesn't have he's lost
whatever step. I know he was always throwing up to him.
But and he did. He had a beautiful move on
a on the yards after the catch against Um. I
think it was a gets Yeah. No, he made a
nice move after he caught the ball. But in terms
of getting separation in order to get open, uh yeah,
it's it's it's he's like an Kwan Bolden now yeah, yeah,
(21:34):
And you know what the thing is they're gonna start doing.
You'll start seeing a little bit more of it. They'll
start stacking him so they'll play him off the ball.
They'll motion him down and stack him so that he
can get free. Because a lot of times you think
about getting separation, you think down the down the field
of the top of your route. He's gonna have a
tough time just getting off press because he's got a
big body surface and he's got no quickness that's not
a great combination big body surface. I like that. I'm
(21:55):
gonna I'm gonna add that she's not fat, she's got
a big body surface. That that's a new one to me.
Daniel Jeremiah joining us from the NFL Network. Eagles Giants,
Eagles had a big league. Giants couldn't do anything. First
three quarters, fourth core, they start putting it together. Um,
so what what change? What allowed? I know they lose
on the last second field goal, but did they figure
(22:17):
something out of the did the Eagles uh kind of
go more into prevent mode? Um? And that allowed the
Giants to get it going. I don't know why the
Giants didn't do more of this early on. But you know,
looked at the Eagles defense and the secondaries minus three
or four bodies back there, so they can't get up
and play press. And I wonder, why score this game?
(22:38):
I thought, Man, the Eagles didn't have any sacks. This
Giant's offensive, why much must much better? And then you
watched it and it was all three steps, get the
ball out quick. When you looked at the number, seventy
eight percent of his throws he made under two point
five seconds. So the Eagles didn't have with all their injuries,
they couldn't get up and pressed and challenge the wide receivers.
When they play against teams with a healthy SEC and Darry,
(23:00):
they're gonna get up and press and you're gonna see
these same issues in the offensive line for the Giants
start to surface again. Um So, man, I know there's
some good moments there for the Giants from some explosive plays,
but man, I have big concerns about that team. I
was unimpressed really with the Chief's offense against the Chargers.
Charges defense and a good enough job to win that game.
Uh but but the Chief's defense is very good. How
(23:24):
much of the win against the Chargers was Philip Brevers
inaptitude as we've discussed, or was it just the Chiefs
are in fact that good in the defensive side the ball. Well,
I think the Chiefs have a good formula. You know,
when you look defensively, they can be dominant. I think
not enough has been said about Justin Houston being back.
I mean, he is a big time, big time player,
so having him healthy, that's a different look in front.
(23:46):
And then offensively, look be efficient, try and protect the football,
but then have the capability to pop some big plays,
and they did it late with the Kareem Hunt. On
a long run, You've got tyreek Hill who can get
you a big play, and you've got Kelsey, who didn't
really do much anything in that game, who was capable
of getting you a big play. So they've got a formula.
They've got a formula that can work for them, and
(24:07):
uh and they can win a whole lot of ball
games with that formula. Um, it's uh fascinating to me.
On how I watched the Oakland Raiders. They have a
good offensive line, they have a good quarterback, they have
good skill position players. But the Washington Redskins shut them down.
How were they able to do it? Well, I'll tell
you what. Defensively, they're underrated. They got home without centering
(24:29):
a lot of bodies. I thought they hit car early
and rattle him a little bit. You know, you go
back to him coming out of college. That was that
was a little bit of the concern. Okay, you know
he watching me at the USC, got knocked around a
little bit. He dropped his eyes and um, you know
it wasn't quite as firm in the pocket. I thought
that the pressure got to him and and This is
one of the few times in the NFL where their
offensive line didn't hold up and he got hit a
(24:52):
little bit earlier in that game. I just thought he
never got comfortable. So I'm sure you know you'll see
him bounce back. They'll play better upfront, but that was
that was something you don't see very often, that Raiders
offensive line get beat up a little bit. Daniel Jeremia

Confident car buying Experience, let's find out what Steve di
Stagers working on. What he got Steve Good Afternoon. Let's
(25:37):
start with the NFL Bronchos Ring of Fame Honoree Red
Miller has passed away. He's going to be honored into
the team's Ring of Fame this November. But Miller has
passed away today at the age of eighty nine. Red
Miller was the Broncos coach in the late seventies Super
Bowl against the Cowboys. First three playoff appearances the Broncos
had as an NFL team in the late seventies, he
(25:59):
was the coach. I guess the question is that this
is a lot like who was it? Who was the
Seattle Seahawk, which Kenny easily was just inducted into the
Hall of Fame, right, and the Seattle is gonna retire
his jersey. I think in this upcoming week at home
against the Colts, it's like, if you were a Hall
of Famer, shouldn't you've already been in the Hall of Fame?
If what's this? What's the guy's name? Red? What? Red Miller?
(26:21):
Red Miller? Like Red Miller? How is he not already
in there? Ring of Fame? Agreed, it's been forty years
for crown out loud. But I guess that he wasn't
a Ring of Famer. I don't know, but it's odd
that now this was gonna be the year, and he
passed away to day and they were due to honor him,
not in a game that already happened this season, but
in November was the schedule. Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford, with
(26:43):
the bad knee, did not practice today. Minnesota still whole field.
He'll play Sunday against Detroit Packers. Wide receiver Randall Cobb
thinks he'll play Tomorrow night against the Bears. He missed
last game with a chest injury. Carolina wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin,
with his bad knee, did not practice today. He only
did stretching with his team and then rode the stationary bike.
And Jets running back Matt Forte. Matt Forte will reportedly
(27:07):
miss this week's matchup with Jacksonville x Rays, where negative
on Forte's toe the first two exhibitions of the NBA
season or this Saturday already by the way, Louisville basketball
coach Rick Pattino will be fired and for now he's
on unpaid administrative leave due to an ongoing criminal investigation.
A federal complaint alleges an Adida's executive conspired to pay
a hundred thousand dollars to a recruits family to play

for him to play at Louisville and represent Adida's later
the Major League Baseball Houston leads three one at Texas
bottom of the fourth inning. Houston, with ninety seven wins
and counting. Texas has lost five games in a row.
Rocky scoreless at home against the Marlins in the bottom
of the second. The Rockies are a game and a
half ahead of Milwaukee for the final NL Wild Card. St.
Louis two and a half out. And by the way,
(27:50):
Major League owners today officially approved the sale of the
Marlins the Derek Jeters Group. The sale is due to
close within the next week. Mariners at a's about to start,
same with and SAT Diamondbacks. Back to you, all right,
thanks Steve doug Otlieve show Fox Sports Radio. The President
is spoken on the NFL. I don't know how this
is like pertinent in any way, but um, he said, quote,
(28:13):
I think the NFL is in a box. I think
they're in a really bad box. You look at what's
happening with ratings. Frankly, the only thing doing well in
the NFL is the pregame because everybody wants to see
what's going on. You cannot have people disrespecting our national anthem,
our flag, our country. That's what they're doing. In my opinion,
the NFL has to change or you know what's gonna happen.
(28:36):
Their business is going to hell. Nielsen said games average
seventeen point six three million viewers first three weeks of
last season, they've dipped to a fifteen point six five million. Uh.
The president has since late last week been lashing out
at NFL players who kneel before the national anthem. Look, um,
(28:57):
I think the whole thing is fascinating. The whole thing
is fascinating. I don't know if it's because players are
kneeling or is it it's like a chicken or the egg.
Is it because they're kneeling, or is it because we're
showing them kneeling right? And then like then there's uh
(29:19):
Aaron Rodgers who wants all Green Bay Packer fans to
like lock arms right in a sign of unity, which
like at some point we're like all right enough already. Um.
I know Clay Travis has talked about having people, uh,
having people not have their red zone right, cancel their
(29:41):
Sunday ticket called direct TV, complain and cancel their Sunday ticket, like,
I just I don't understand why. Sorry, I don't. I
don't care enough. Do I care about human beings? I do.
I don't care enough about the protest to even watch
or to care. I just I have to fantasy football teams,
and I like football, and I cover football. And call
(30:02):
me selfish, but again that's my Watching football on Sunday
is an escape. And it's the red zones, like the
best channel on TV. I don't really, I don't get it,
but I'm not. I'm also not sure this this is
the this is the problem with players reacting to the president, like,
(30:22):
no matter what happens, when you react to him, he
seems to win, right, he just does, because it doesn't
if you come at him with real numbers like well, actually,
the NFL is super super popular, then it's just fake news, right.
And if you come out and with negative numbers like
see told you, I told you so. I don't know
(30:48):
where you go with it. I do know that pretending
that he doesn't exist is probably the best course of action.
And I know that his words last week were antagonizing. Ah,
but the whole thing is fascinating to me. Fascinating. Do
you know anybody who doesn't. Maybe here's part of it.
(31:10):
Do you know anybody who doesn't watch the NFL anymore
because of the because because of the protests like this,
it doesn't it's before the game ever starts. I also, really,
I always say this is more in basketball than in football. Football.
You can miss something early in the game. But you
know a lot of times in basketball games because they're
stacked up next to each other, you miss early on
in the game, like you missed the first couple of minutes, like, oh,
(31:32):
I sure wish they would get to the Kentucky Louisville
basketball game instead of watching Ohio State versus Georgetown, which
went long. But really like you missed the you missed
the introductions, you missed the first two minutes of the game,
like who cares? You have the right to not watch,
but you also have the right to not watch the
early part, like you didn't watch the national anthem to
begin early on the game. I don't know why that's it.
(31:55):
I don't necessarily there's no real control group to know.
My best us as to why the numbers continue to
go down is people are watching less TV. The NFL
games are on too often. There was a game Thursday,
there's a game Sunday morning. There was Sunday early afternoon,
Sunday late afternoon, Sunday night, Monday night. That's a lot
of games. That's a lot of windows. I mean, our
(32:18):
fantasy football numbers down. Are betting numbers down in Vegas?
Are those numbers way down? But the NFL is saying
they need to change their business. I do think you
it is interesting that as much as we would all look,
(32:38):
I don't think anybody wants the police to be brutal.
No one is, with the exception of a very small
group of people, no one thinks that anybody's civil rights
should be violated, right. I think one of the things
you find here is that we're actually most people are
more in the middle. There are more united against racism
(33:02):
than anything else. But politics drives a specific wedge between
people and it becomes divisive. And the more we go
around acting like, hey, everybody is for taking a knee
before the flag, there's a lot of people that aren't,
and it may be for the wrong reasons. That's the
other thing that's missing. There are plenty of people that
(33:23):
are bothered by somebody knee kneeling for the flag for
the wrong reasons, like, oh, they're protesting the National's Like no,
actually they're not. They're actually the former protest to symbolize
something else. But that's because you've been actually listening to
the message, whereas plenty of people don't listen to the message,
but they don't care. Johnny Football is back in better
(33:44):
than ever. Real news or fake news. I'll tell you
next what True Car You can find out what other
people in your area paid for the same car you're
looking for, new or used. Visit True Car to enjoy
more confident car buying experience. Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Mm hm m hmm. Just that simple fact. Mm hmmmmmm.
(34:12):
Major League Baseball season still going on, like really still still.
It's like one of those things like, hey, we wrapped
this thing out. It's like the speech. Have you ever
gone to a to a dinner in which the guy
has given a speech and it's really really good and
really really very interesting. Boy, he's got a really interesting
backstory and he's going on and on and on, you know,
just like and then people are starting to leave, you know,
(34:35):
and you look up and half the seats are empty,
and you just and then you need somebody just go like, hey,
we're good. Here, we're done. We're we're good. You know,
do the the Vegas Dealer thing. We're done, we're finished.
We know who's going to the playoffs? About like if
you just picked a team out of a hat and
the nationally like, we're gonna go with the Rockies just
(34:59):
went not when you some of the mountain time zone,
Like even that was there. Look, the Brewers, the Rockies.
Rockies were better early, Brewers better late. We're gonna go
with the Rockies because they're their mountain time zone. People like, yeah,
it doesn't make much sense, but okay, sure. Right now
baseball is the guy giving the speech most everybody has left,
(35:23):
and he's like, look, I got really good material here
at the end. I gotta get to It's very very passionate,
very important. Their bills like wrap this, sucker up, Let's
get to a game. This is game time. On the
Doug Gottlieb Show, Steve just said we're waiting for him,
like the iPhone X right where he's he's worth a
(35:45):
thousand bucks too, like the iPhone z, John Romos, what
game do we have going today? Real news? Fake news? Doggie,
I will be giving you some stories, some headlines. You
tell me real or fake story? Number one, The Heisman
Trophy winner and former Brown's quarterback Johnny Manziel is returning
to the football field this season and will play for
(36:05):
the Hamilton's Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. Real
news or fake news? That's fake news. That is fake news.
The real story. The CFL has denied Manzill's been to
play this year, but left open the possibility for revisiting
the matter next season. Manziel will be eligible for them
next season if he meets certain conditions that have been
(36:27):
spelled out by the CFL Commissioner. That league currently, by
the way, in week fifteen already of their twenty week
regular season, and the wire Services notes that with all
of the CFLs international players, Menzel would be required to
make a two year commitment if he signs with Hamilton's.
I love the Canadian Football rules. They're a lot like
do you guys remember Jock Jams. It was not Jock Jams,
(36:49):
uh Rock Jack James was the CD Rock and Jock Games,
which they used to have like an eight point shot whatever,
And these tell all this different stuff, like they don't
have four towns. They have three. They don't have eleven
guys in the field. They have twelve. Different size field,
different size field. They played twenty weeks instead of the
seven sixteen games seventeen weeks. Here, they just like, all right,
(37:10):
let should be different, to be different, and so it's
a passing league. This would be the place for Johnny
Manzeli could scramble wider field, passing downs almost every down.
This would be perfect for him. Story number two. Yankees
manager Joe Girardi said a fan sitting behind home plate
during last night's game against the Rays was rightfully ejected
for tipping pitch locations, real news or fake news and
(37:35):
spectacular yes. During one of Gary sanchez Is at bats
last night in a home win over Tampa Bay, Sanchez
was batting full count in the eighth when the plate
umpire walked to the backstop, spoke to a member of
the team's security staff and directed that the fan be
kicked out. Sanchez and the opposing catcher said that fan
had been yelling in Spanish outside outside and that the
(37:57):
spectators shouts were accurate. Quote him, the catcher, Wilson Ramos,
that was not professional. If you come to the game
you're asked to do enjoy the game. Everybody's supposed to
see the ball and just react with the pitches. That's no,
that's not that's that's hold advantage. I don't under say
that's home field advantage. That was even Joe Aldy, the
home manager, said that crossed the line. That crossed the line?
(38:20):
What line? He said? It was rightful that the guy
in Yankee Stadium was kicked out. You've been stealing signs forever.
You can't. You can't have a fan yell out that
the guy's you know, lining up outside. I disagree with that.
That's what's the point of having home field adantag unless
you got homebuild advantageless you can tip pitches. Yeah, sure.
Story number three, The NFL is reportedly finalizing a deal
(38:42):
that would make Justin Timberlake the halftime performers for Super
Bowl fifty two. And they're spectacular and according to That's Magazine,
Timberlake in the NFL are locking out a deal that
would put him on stage for the first time since
the Super Bowl over a decade ago, when a controversial
ripped off part of Janet Jackson's top. The halftime show
(39:02):
this time will take place February fourth in the Vikings
New Stadium. The league reportedly had been rejected already by
jay Z and Adele. The record for viewership was set
this past year by Lady Gaga most watched Super Bowl
halftime show of all time. I don't, I don't really
didn't really understand the Adele thing, And I guess the
question with jay Z was, you know, they had performed together,
(39:24):
they had toured together, and so was it a package deal?
And then jay Z bail about out and then Timberlake
decided to do it. But Timberlake's the goat man. He
can singing, dancing and rapping and act, and beautiful woman
like him and he likes them back. Um, and of
course now he's married to a beautiful woman in Jessica Biell.
Like that. Dude's pretty much the goat if he's going
to show up at halftime, and you know, halftime shows
(39:45):
are for women more than for men, and women seem
to like him as well. So I think that's a win.
That's that's that's pretty good upgrade for the league. And
the source says, justin no surprise performers at this time.
Number let's skip to number five or no surprise breasts
being revealed from the NFL hopes there returning will be
exposed during this during this, well, there is a delay
(40:06):
now remember because of that. Brett Musburger gave his thoughts
on Tony Romo as a broadcaster, said, he thinks Romo
is doing an amazing job and he's impressed with his
ability to predict plays before they happen. Real news are
fake news on that, Yeah, that is fake news, Brett Musker,
he finds that trait more annoying than endearing. The exact quote, Tony,
(40:30):
get off it. Okay, first of all, you're intruding on
your play by play man. Jim Nance was just trying
to give us a we like to watch the game, Okay,
that is they get off my long guy, if there
ever was one at this point in his career. Brent,
speaking on the v S I N Live show he
has from a casino in Vegas, I would say this,
I watched Tony call again. He wasn't very good calling
(40:51):
the game. He does recognize coverage and says some interesting things,
but in terms of actual execution of broadcast, I kind
of tend to agree with him. That talks too much,
and he talks when he shouldn't be talking, and so
it is. It is a little bit jumbled, all right.
Very rarely do athletes and coaches go out on top.
Rick Pettino was carried out today in Louisville. We discussed
(41:12):
next in the Doug Gottlieb Show, What Up America Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Come and see you from
the City of Angels. Welcome in. Of course, you can
listen to this show in its entirety wherever you are
now to Resto Radio, Satellite radio, I Heart Radio app.
You can download the podcast. Anything you missed like Daniel
Jeremiah who joined us from the NFL network Last Hour
(41:35):
from Salam will join us. Thirteen year NFL veteran. You
may have seen him on CNN. I've worked with him.
He's worked in a bunch of different TV networks. We'll
talk to him about the president's latest remarks in regard
to the protests across the National Football League. From Salam
will join us upcoming in uh in fifteen minutes. We'll
(41:56):
get to the latest on Andrew Luck in about five minuts.
But there's a couple of sayings that we use on
this show. One is there are no more secrets, only
facts yet to be revealed. And not all the facts
are revealed, but more will continue to come to light.
Eventually they'll all be like, there's no and no seekers anymore.
(42:18):
Do you guys see this story? Um, this is a
really gross, gonna creep you out story. But at least
I warned you and said it's a really gross, creep
you out story. There's a couple in a small city
in Russia that's accused of cannibalizing up to thirty people. Yeah, yeah, um,
(42:44):
This Russian couple thirty five years old, Dmitri and Italia Bakshiva,
are in a town of kras Nodar, which is like,
uh five hours from Soshi. Remember they had the Olympics
and it was really warm weather, only they created a
(43:06):
Remember they created like a cold weather up in the mountains.
I know it's Winter Olympics. It's something. It's like, wait,
Winter Olympics. I don't even care about that. Aren't the
Winter Olympics upcoming this winner as well? I think they
actually are. I think they are. That's one of those
events you're like, oh yeah, two thousand eighteen Winter Olympics.
I'll pretend to care anyway? Do you know how they
(43:30):
found them? They found out that these people were doing it.
They were redoing roads and a crew came upon a
cell phone. They turned on the cell phone and they
started going through the pictures and one of the pictures
had a dude taking a bite of dead human human remain,
Like one are the chances right? Like you're You're like,
(43:52):
you're in Russia and you're working on a road and
you're like, oh, I find cell phone, turn on the
cell phone. You're like, well, ah um, I don't know
a couple of questions here. Obviously you're not a sane
person if you're cannibalizing people. But if you're cannibalizing somebody
and you're gonna take pictures, shouldn't you put a locking
(44:13):
code on your cell phone? Just that? Just right? Like
that's just basic cannibalization one oh one, isn't it? I
don't know. Maybe they didn't go to the cannibalization seminar,
which I know is offered late at night on Russian
cable TV. My point is only in that they're just
there aren't secrets, because somewhere somebody's got pictures of something
(44:36):
or text messes something and those secrets are coming the
light coming to the light of day. Here with this
college basketball scandal, and there's several fascinating elements to it,
like what started it. Apparently a guy who was an
agent for Aaron Goodman, one of the big agents in
(44:58):
the NBA, was fired, and then he started working for
the FBI, and he was an informant, and that linked
him to the suit guy, linked him to the head
of Adidas, linked him to these college basketball coaches. They
got video, they got audio, and today the first big
domino fell in. Rick Pettino placed on administrative leave. Uh,
(45:21):
here's Gregory Postel, who's the inner and President Louisville. The
allegations in a criminal investigation are troubling to all of us.
It is vital for this university to strictly adhere to
n c double A rules doing and nothing would be
a tacit endorsement of unethical and criminal behavior. All right,
So we told you that there are no more secrets
(45:42):
on effects yet to be revealed. I've told you in
the past that no one gets a second opinion on
good news. Right, doctor comes you and says Mr Gottli,
If you don't have cancer and you say thanks, Doc,
but I need a second opinion. Right here is another one.
You don't get caught your first time, like like, if
(46:06):
Rick Pettino did this, probably happen. I'm guessing it happened.
Like the FBI has these allegations, they're pretty sure, but
this isn't one of those. Oh well, they just this
is the first player ever that Adidas is placed at
Louisville for a hundred thousand dollars ever, and they just
happened to get caught. It doesn't work that way. It
(46:26):
doesn't work that way. Guys don't get caught cheating the
one time they cheat on their wife and coach doesn't
get caught cheating the one time they pay a player
or the one time Adidas pays them to and and
delivers the player didn't happen. And while I've told you
before about a thousand little cuts, these aren't you a
(46:48):
thousand little cuts. These are a thousand shops between Rick
Pettino and what happened when he's in the Italian restaurant
and the fact that he was shaken down by this
woman who he had the what was it two minute
long affair with to the UH to the having the
prostitute in the basketball dormitory, which the n c A
(47:12):
came down and ruled upon just this past spring. To this,
I don't think I blame Louisville. Well, you're a great coach.
He's done a great job as the coach in terms
of wins and losses and general production and filling up
the arena, the Young Center, which was brand new when
they moved into it in downtown Louisville. But at some points,
like dude, enough is enough, just enough bad publicity, and
(47:36):
we just even if this wasn't true, we gotta move on.
But the other curious part is how people just don't
walk away. They were just guys will never like why
is he still doing it? Jim Beheid won a national championship.
He could have walked away, or he went to the
final four. Even last year. Last year he went to
(47:57):
this last year year four went to the final four,
Like you can walk away. These guys, they keep trying
to win warm wreket. This happened with my head coach,
Attie Sutton two thousand four. They went to the final four.
They lost a game when he bucket to Georgia Tech.
And I remember sitting with the staff the morning of
the game, like, well, you know, if coach wins the
national championship, or he even gets the national championship, he
(48:18):
might quit, Like why do you have to why do
you have to get even one? What's what's one more
game going to prove about his legacy as a coach.
You hang on too long. This is the old boxer analogy.
Nobody walks out of the ring that last time, like
Muhammad Ali didn't, Larry Holmes didn't, Mike Tyson didn't, Vander
holly Field didn't. We'll see if Floyd Mayweather does. I mean,
(48:39):
I don't think that's really going out on top, but
he did walk out of the ring. He did walk
out of the ring with a with a t KO.
Grantedy was fighting a non boxer who would never boxed
professionally in a ring, right, Like that's the crazy part
about it. But we'll see if that's his. Like Sugar
Ray Leonard, I wouldn't think about how he went up.
(49:00):
But the old boxing analogy that everyone goes out on
their back, nobody walks out the last time, that seems
to be analogous two coaches. There aren't the John Wooden's
who go out in their mid fifties and go out
a winner. We just aren't alright, Andrew Luck is still
not practicing with the Indianapolis Colts. This means one of
(49:21):
two things, and maybe both right. One of two things.
The first is he's got a major shoulder problem and
they're being super super super cautious. That's a distinct possibility
and maybe even a probability. But the second is that
the culture sitting there going on, we're not any good
and we may not use them this entire year. This
(49:42):
is a long term, not a short term guy, and
what's the point of really playing it? And this, oh yeah,
by the way, gives into the idea of tanking and
what I don't understand about the NBA trying to fix tanking.
The NBA thinks you only tank because the lottery system,
when in fact, the lottery system has protected them against
teams that tank, like the Philadelphia seventies. Sis only got
(50:05):
the number one pick once during this process of you
know this trust the process four years, they only got
number one overall one time. The lottery thing actually works
as opposed to the old school dumping games. That's what
the Colts may be doing. So he's not practicing, which
means he's not playing. And if he's not practicing, now,
what's like that even plays next week? And yes, they
(50:27):
end up winning a game against Cleveland Browns, but it
does stand a reason that even the Colts are smart
enough to go like, hey, wait till we get our
first NFL win. All we did was be the Browns
this week. He from Salam joins the show up coming next. Um,
I guess here's the question I want to ask. I
(50:50):
tell this to my wife all the time. I will
be completely honest with you, right, but don't ask me
a question to which you don't want the answer too.
Don't ask me a question and then, hey, honey, what
do you think of this? Does he these this? Do
these jeans make my butt look big? And don't ask
(51:10):
me that question unless you want the honest answer. Of course, No,
no husband's ever going like, honey, you're asthles huge, Like
no one's ever actually said that. I'm sure. I'm sure
maybe somebody said no happily married man. But the point
is like, careful of the I want your honest opinion.
I want you because there are a lot of opinions
that are not like yours. So Aaron Rodgers is asking
(51:35):
the Green Bay Packers fans to lock arms in a
sign of unity during the playing in the national anthem
this Thursday night. How does it sounds like a bad
idea to me? How do it sounds like a bad
idea to me? ALASKI from Salam. He'll join me in

join me in a moment here in studio at Farmers,

famous for his time with the Houston Texans and on
Leadoff UH with Me on TBS Sports Network. It was
a great show, was the best shop we have the
show ever was because we cracked the same jokes. It
was awesome. Um, Okay, I got a lot of things
I want to there's actual football stuff I want to
get to with you, But I do want to ask
(53:47):
you about the protests because like now we've we've taken
this completely different turn. Right now, it's like, okay, if
you don't protest, you're not cool. And then Aaron Rodgers like, hey,
we want all the fans a lock arms, Like, you know,
all the fans aren't necessarily are We like you as
a packer, but we ain't necessarily on your side. That
might sound like a really good idea, but that feels
(54:10):
like a bad idea. It could be a bad idea
because you gotta remember when people come to the games,
they're there for entertainment, right for the most part. And yeah,
there some of their beliefs may line up with yours,
but the only real reason that they really like you
is because you play for their team. Baron Rodgers played
for Bears. They're playing They would hate him right exactly,
(54:36):
So you have to take that into account. As a player,
he's been there for a long time, he's won a
Super Bowl there, he's the man there, So asking people
to come out of their comfort zone and support whatever
you're off the field beliefs are that that's a whole
different road. Then there's the Ben Roethlisberger and the Alejandra
Villa and Aueva thing like Villen Aueva actually served in
(54:59):
the army, is a ranger, three three different tours in Afghanistan.
He goes out there, he's all by himself, and then
he's like, hey, I've we almost made him feel bad
for doing stuff, which I thought was like the peak
of ridiculousness, right, and then Ben Rothlinsber was like, yeah,
I wanted to be out there. I should have been
out there. I made a mistake not to get out there.
Like what what what are you doing? Ben? I don't
(55:20):
that was awful. I thought that was the word that
was terrible. I crushed Ben for that. I'm not crazy
to crush Ben for it, right, No, it's completely undermining
the entire process what you guys agreed to as a team.
So if you agree to something, right, Mike Tomlin was
very poignant and adamant about Look, some guys want to
(55:41):
do it, some guys don't want to do it. So
what we did was come together as a team. The
players voted and they all decided will stay in the
locker room or in the tunnel or wherever they were
as a team. So to come out after that and say, well, hey,
look that was their idea. That wasn't mine. I wanted
to be out there. That's completely undermining your teammates, your
(56:02):
coaching staff, the whole organization. And I don't get that.
I was shocked that he would do that. It's kind
of like pointing the finger at everyone else but himself,
and I thought that was classless. It's okay, So I
guess the question becomes like, look, we've had these discussions
off there before. The white guy, black guy thing in
the locker room is you have much more thorough and
(56:23):
interesting discussions than people actually have when there's a microphone
in front of their face. Like can I, as a
white guy, go out and salute the flag but not? Uh?
But but but that not take away from as you,
as a black person want to go, like, hey man,
I want to do this. Police brutality is something that
I think needs attention brought to it, and that's why
I want to do it. Like does that will that
(56:43):
undermine a team? If if you can a white guy
stand up for the flag and not be ostracized by
his black teammates. No, he A lot of people are
not really getting the fact that if I was on
the team, we both were on the team. And I'll say, hey, up,
I agree with Colin Kaepernick. I've experienced some of this
(57:03):
in my own life. Are no people who have I'm
gonna take a knee in respect of the protests, but
I don't want to disrespect the flag, and I don't
want to seem unpatriotic. You, as a white guy on
the team, you come in and say, hey, look, I'm
with you on that, but my beliefs I really want to,
you know, stand for the national anthem. I'm okay with that,
right because what we're having is open dialogue. The problem
(57:25):
is when you don't communicate, and that's what I think
a lot of sides are doing out here. They're just
talking at each other instead of listening and trying to
understand the other side. So I look at it both ways,
Like I understand people who are saying that it's unpatriotic,
and and it it it's a disgrace and you should
(57:47):
be happy you're making millions of dollars you're in this country.
I don't agree with it, but I can I can
get I can get my head around their views because
they've been taught a certain way. Now, if you veterans,
people who have served, and people who know the flat coat,
they'll say they're taking a knee. Isn't disrespectful to the
(58:08):
flag at all. Some of the things people doing in
everyday life with the flag. Wrapping yourself in the flag
is depending on if you own an American flag bikini.
It's pretty disrespectful. You got a tea back bikini on
with the American flag going up the back of your butt. Wait,
so my my banana hammock? Yes, that's my banana hammock. Yeah,
(58:29):
you're resting your franks and beans in the American flag.
I didn't know that was wrong. That's pretty disrespecting. They
know they didn't. Nobody pulled me aside and tell me
flag from salam. I'm joining us on the Doug gottlip show. Um.
The other part two it is it's hard because you
want to not react, right. You want to go like,
look that dude wins because he calls players out and
(58:51):
they react. But the truth is reacting kind of helps
him win, because what does it do? You know there's
guys that that sit there and watched to be like,
I just want to watch sports. Like what am I
supposed to do? Like he called our bluff and then
we need we we as as a as a unit,
we kneel before the flag, but that will wear the
average middle age American out, Like then, all I want
to do is watch football game? Click. I turned, like,
(59:14):
how do you? Is it possible to not react? It
is possible not to react, um, but I don't know
if it's it's smart to or not, because you gotta
look at it like this. These are issues. Number one.
Donald Trump did something I don't think anyone holding that
office should ever do, is be completely disrespectful, uh to
(59:37):
not only players, but the mothers and fathers of those players,
calling them s obs. So you can say, oh, he
was just a statement, but the people he's talking to,
it's not just a statement. Right. So if you if
I'm out there playing and I'm taking a peaceful protest
and I'm kneeling and you call me uh an s ob,
(59:59):
and I take it personal, like you're talking about the
people who gave birth to me. I mean that's an insult.
There's there's no like, nobody's arguing like my thing is
like and and then of course you do it on
the back of the Charlottesville thing, like wait wait, you
said there's good people on both sides of that one,
and then you call people s O P S. I'm
with you. But again, for whatever reason, there are there's
(01:00:23):
a apparently a substantial group of people who choose to
never hear any of this. Of the things he said
right between the video with Billy Bush, you're talking about
the size of his junk when he's during the presidential election,
conscious ignorance, or or even some of them when he
addressed the u n some of the things he said,
I mean like even in the night in which he
(01:00:44):
called out NFL players that took a knee, he was
down there campaign for dude who lost yesterday. But he
also said, like, well, you know, if he loses, all
goes to the other guy, like it was it was.
But it's one of the things where like he he
says things to which anybody else like can't do that,
and your president, you can't do that, but he doesn't,
and then your reaction is what ends up kind of
(01:01:07):
invigorating him, and so he's like to this point where
like normally I get hey, just don't react, but in
this case, you gotta react. It makes it impossible for
you not to react, right, which is I think, because
he'll keep going, He'll just keep what I and then
you come out and with like no, no, no no, that
actually actually the numbers are up for the VIRU. No
fake news, fake news. He he coined a phrase that
(01:01:30):
can get him out of any live Yes, fake news.
All he has to do is say that in his
fan in his base, his fan base completely ignores any
of the relevance any of the information in the story,
whether it be verified or not. They completely tune it out.
So you're literally talking to yourself. Does have the But
(01:01:52):
the original protest was against police brutality, Yes, right, yes,
that is correct, But we've gotten past the point to
where that's actually part of the protest. Well they wanted
it that way. Donald Trump, I knew exactly what he
was doing. If you shift the protests right and make
it about something that more people would be up in
(01:02:13):
arms about, then you win. So now it's not about
the mistreatment of minorities by the hands of paid you know,
authority in this country. So it's now it's about being unpatriotic. Okay,
So how do you how do you shift the narrative
back or do you just you stop protesting or you
can never stop protesting. I don't. I don't because until
(01:02:35):
we actually talk about the issue and and do something
about the the actual problem that was the original protest,
then it's not gonna go away. It's still happening, and
they don't want to address that situation, so they have
to make it about something else that they can get behind.
So now it's about look at these guys. We give
(01:02:57):
a millions and millions of dollars. As much money is
I made in my thirteen year NFL career, which was
it's pretty good. I'm still an African American man in
this country. I'm six eight to sev and when I
walk around, I'm intimidating. So if I get pulled over
for nothing, or if I get stopped or question, I
(01:03:19):
still have to fear for my life because I don't
know how it's gonna turn out. To get the other side,
to get White America to understand that, it's difficult because
they're not faced with that same issue. So they can't
even they have no idea what that feels like. When
(01:03:40):
you've never been approached in that type of situation, then
you can't possibly sympathize and understand where I'm coming from.
And that's why the disconnect between what Colin Kaepernick was
doing it is so vampant because they just don't get it. Well,
I don't get it. It seems like he's unpatriotic, so
they stick on that point. They can understand that point.
(01:04:02):
He's on patriotic, so I don't even talk about the
other point. I didn't think he was on patriotic. I
thought he was intentionally disrespectful like I thought it was.
It was. It was disrespectful with the intent of bringing
attention to the problem. And I he he knowingly willfully
put his job out in the line, which I thought
was actually brave of him. Again, I disagree with the
protest and I do think that he went way too
far with some of the rhetoric that he used, and
(01:04:23):
I think again he attentionally did so. He called cops
murderers walk in the streets, like I think you're inflaming things,
especially when there's there are good cops that are protecting
on a daily basis and then the pig socks and
the castor shot like. I think he made some errors,
but I think probably the biggest air made is that
that the narrative has been shifted, and whatever reason, we've
(01:04:45):
all allowed the narrative to shift. And some of it
is the doing of the president, the doing of the
opposite side, but some of it is allowing it to
be done. All right, here's what I want to do.
You did play thirteen years in the NFL. You do
know a thing or two about offensive line, and frankly,
with the putrid offensive line play, can we can you explain?
I gotta figure out what else is going on sports
(01:05:06):
from Steve to Seger, and then you gotta explain to
me how you fix this stuff as we head into
October and half the league camp block the other half
of the later. Alright, Steve, dig what are you working on?
Start with NFL news. Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford, with the
bad need, did not practice today. Minnesota still whopeful he'll
play Sunday against Detroit. Dolphins. Running back j and Ji
did not practice today, but he plans to play Sunday
(01:05:28):
against New Orleans in London, where he was born the cold, say.
Quarterback Andrew Luck will not practice this week. He still
hasn't practice coming off shoulder surgery. Packers wide receiver Randall
Cobb thinks he'll play tomorrow night against the Bears. He
missed last game with a chest injury. Carolina wide receiver
Kelvin Benjamin, with the bad knee, did not practice today.
Louisville basketball coach Rick Pettino will be fired for now.
(01:05:50):
He's on unpaid administrative leave due to an ongoing criminal investigation.
Four day games in Major League Baseball, Houston has Justin
Verlander on the mound and leads eleven to two at
Texas in the bottom of the sixth inning. So far
a grand slam for George Springer and Carlos Korea is
four for four with four RBIs. They're ready to hand
Texas a sixth straight loss. Colorado currently a game and
(01:06:12):
a half ahead of Milwaukee for the last NL wild card.
Colorado leading at home six three now against the Marlins
in the bottom of the fourth as over the Mariners
to nothing in the fourth. It's the Giants three nothing
leaders at Arizona, top of the third. Back to you, uh,
raise your hand if you forgot that Justin Verlina was
on the Astros. That was like, but that was Justin
(01:06:33):
verlin are doing the Astros? Like, oh, that's right, he
got traded to the Astros. Totally for I totally forgot.
With True Car, you can find out what other people
in your area paid the same car. You're looking for
new or us. Visit True Car to enjoy more confident
car buying experience to former pro bowler, Uh, he's a comedian.
He's a TV and radio personality. You can hear him
on Fox Sports Trade in the weekends. He's e from
salam He joins us in studio. Okay, like, look, your
(01:06:55):
best seasons were with the Houston Texans. They can't lock
anybody know they can't. So I mean, I guess it
simply as simple as well, Dwayne didn't have Dwayne. You
don't have Dwayne Brown. Pay him a bunch of money.
But he's right down the street to here. Okay, So
he was at the High had a dinner party, he
was at the house last week. He's just sitting there
counting his money. Look, Dwayne wants out right, he wanted
(01:07:19):
to renegotiates, renegotiate his contract. Rick Smith said they don't
do that. They don't open the books with two years
left on the deal, which is false. They've done it
three times. They did it with J. J. Watt, they
did it with Andre Johnson, and they did it with
Eric Winston. So if you're telling Dwayne that he's not
that caliber of player, he's the best offer. He's one
(01:07:42):
of the top five left tackles in the league, and
he's by far the best offensive tackle. You guys have
offensive lineman period. Then I mean, to me, I understand
where he's coming from, because they've destroyed the offensive line.
I mean, those guys. No, he's made the strongest possible
(01:08:03):
statement you can make. All right, Fine, you can win
without me, go ahead and with it's so bad for
that's offensive. I guess it's not even just them, though,
I know, like, okay, you got Giants, you got Seahawks,
Um you have Arizona. Arizona is awful, Cleveland. I don't
know if you've seen this, but but Sean Kaiser has
been hit thirty one time, can't you know? But this
(01:08:27):
is why I'll tell you. College systems today are destroying
the fabric that the NFL is built on. But why
because when you came out. You came out of San
Diego State. Okay, what type of offense? A pro style offense?
All right, so we ran. Now, all of our coaches
came from the NFL. Right, So my offensive owner, my
(01:08:50):
offensive line coach, play seventeen years in the NFL for
the Charges in the Vikings. It's on All Decade team.
So what I was being taught was what he was
being taught, just tangible and I could use. I started
Kyle Turley and myself got drafted in the same year.
We both started for our teams right off the bat,
made the All Rookie Team. I went to the Super Bowl.
(01:09:11):
What's happening now is number one, college coaches are getting
younger and younger. Most of them haven't played ever, and
the offensive systems with the UH spread offense and no
one having to make decisions themselves. So if you watch
a college football game, which I know you do, they'll
come up to the line of scrimminy. Everybody stands up
(01:09:32):
and looks at the coach because the coach is reading
the defense, making adjustments and then tells them what to do.
So now they don't have to think for themselves. All right,
It's not only killing quarterbacks, but it's killing guys up front.
All five offensive linemen have to work together. So if
you're all looking at the sideline waiting for the center
to get the call then to tell you what to
do when you get to the next level, it doesn't
work like that. You have to be able to process
(01:09:55):
the play call. The defense can change in the middle
of the cadence and you have to know, exact me
what to do, and you can't wait for the center
or the quarterback to tell you what to do. And
I think that's what's happening. Defenses are getting a lot
more aggressive, a lot more exotic, and the offensive line
play isn't up to par because they can't adjust it.
I've seen guys go completely the opposite direction. If you
(01:10:18):
see a linebacker come from the middle of the field,
out of the box, get to the line of scrimmage
and we have green feet was what we called it
is when he's in a track stand standing up and
you have a defensive end on your outside shade as
a tackle. To you, what do you think is gonna happen? Right?
(01:10:38):
Where's the defensive end gonna go? Defensive end is gonna
go inside he's gotta go inside because he has to
make room for the now the new person who have
seen right, So if you're not processing this and you
step the ball and you step out and your defensive
end goes inside, now you have two guys undebated to
the quarterback. I see it every week. I see it
at least once every teen play. How do you how
(01:11:01):
do you fix it? Um? You gotta retrain these guys.
What about in the short term. I mean, like, look,
you're we're October. And so when Carson Palmer had no
it was unbelievable. I mean, he was hot against he
was on fire. We haven't been all year against anybody.
So what you have to do as an offensive coordinator
(01:11:21):
is you literally have to break it that. You have
to make it as easy as possible, and you have
to help these guys. Out Right, we're seeing a lot
of tackles, Um not getting any help whatsoever. So you
want to go when you want to go empty and
it's five offensive lineman against five defensive lineman and you
know you're struggling an offensive line that's not a good one.
You gotta cheeta chip, you gotta slide one direction and
(01:11:41):
send me back the opposite direction. You gotta bring it
tight in, have him flexed out, have him chip, give
yourself some time as things you can do, which I
never got. I never got any of this, So I'm
still salty about it. You know, when it's third and ten,
I'm going against Jason Taylor alone. You know, I get it.
I understand it. Nowadays, you have to be able to
(01:12:02):
design an offense, or you can know where your deficiencies
are and you can help that. And they're not doing it.
Cam Newton got pulled last week. Um is awful. He
has not. He has not been good. Now. Look, I
don't think you're ever as good as you are. When
things were rolling for them two years ago, they had
a great run game, unbelievable defense. UM kind of similar
(01:12:23):
to the Cowboys last year in that their quarterback was
always put in a good position and they you know,
they had him with some power running plays. And when
the quarterback runs the ball, everybody in football knows that's
that's one more blocker on the field for you. So
they were almost running single wing with him at some
poy in time. It was like it was all working.
Last year was bad. This year appears to be worse
(01:12:44):
and he's coming off a shoulder. Is this who Cam
Newton is is? It's a bad version of that could
be fixed like what's happened to the former m v P.
To be honest, this is who Cam Newton is. So
he's never been in that accurate. He stays right around
fifty seven percent completion rate, good years, bad years, you know,
(01:13:08):
throughout his worst year, throughout his his his best year.
That's who you are. And for him, I said it
on our show a couple of weeks ago. He's doing
a poor job getting rid of the ball. So the
problem with big, strong quarterbacks who have tremendous arms is
they like big place right. He's athletic, he can fend
(01:13:30):
off defenders. Ben Roethlisberger's was like this in his early
in his career. He's stay in the pocket way too
long and then try to move the pocket. The problem
with uh Cam is he's not accurate, right, So when
he gets moving and all that he's his accuracy goes down.
So now you're in a situation where I'm watching him.
He never checks the ball down. He never checks the
(01:13:54):
ball down. Offenses are put in place for guys to
be available. They're gonna be open if they can't cover everybody.
Let's say drafted Christian McCaffrey. He never checks the ball
for that specific purpose. He never checks the ball down.
He's always looking down the field. And that's a detriment
to him because now he puts himself in a position
to have to run to take hits and not get
those easy yards. Get three yards, come back to the line,
(01:14:16):
second and seven, we're good, Get two more yards. You
know what I mean. He's not doing those things. He's
constantly looking down field when things break down. He's not
the runner he used to be because of the injuries.
Took a lot of shots to the head last year,
so he's not that guy. They need to really hone
him in and say, hey, look use Christian McCaffrey. All right.
They lost Greg Osen, which is is gonna kill him.
(01:14:39):
Benjamin's hurt, so you have to come up with ways
to stay on target. They're not staying on target. That's
he from Salim. Check them out weekends here on Fox
Sports Radio, fall him on Twitter as well. E great
to see it in studio. The best player in college
football right now, Joel Clad has an answer. You'll see
if or here if I agree. Next Doug Gotli show
Fox Sports Radio, we'll get to uh more on Cam Newton.
(01:15:02):
It's funny, the Cam Newton thing. I felt like I
was the only one talking about it this summer, like, hey,
you know he had shoulder surgery. Uh, and he had
lake ankle surgery, like kind of important for running quarterback. Uh.
Your shoulder super important, your ankle super important. And yet
he's been playing poorly. What one report has out there
and what no one apparently is willing to at least
(01:15:23):
offer up the possibility of UM, It's kind of kind
of goes back to my tipping point argument. We'll do
it at the top of the hour. In the meantime,
I always say this every day, but it's true. We
have an unbelievable list of shows. Group of shows on
Fox Sports Radio. It starts with Clay Travis and now
kicked the coverage in the morning. Plus you can hear
(01:15:44):
first things first on Sirius XM Channel three. That's with
Chris Carter and Nick Wright and UM General Wolf and
then uh of course that's followed on Fox Sports Radio
by the Dan pat Trick Show. Then you can hear
undisputed on Serious x M. Channel eighty three, and then
(01:16:06):
of course you can hear Collin Callard show, The Herd
Rich Eisen, JT. The Brick After Mine, as well as
the Gorman Brothers and Jason Smith, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, all
good shows, and we like to pick and choose the
best of those shows and bring it back to you.
So I know that the odds will tell you it's
Sae Kwon Barkley, but I gotta tell you, I'm a
bit frustrated with all of this going on with Sae
(01:16:28):
Kwon Barkley. And let me tell you why. He's tremendous,
and I don't want to take away from him, so
I'm gonna try not to say Kwon is the best
back in in America. He's explosive, he's exciting, he is
a great player, He's tremendous. What he did against Iowa
was phenomenal. Really, all purpose yards went well over three
d and fifty all purpose yards. Great performance, okay, And
(01:16:49):
now all of a sudden, all the love is going
towards him in much respect is deservedly. So did you
know that it wouldn't have been even the fifth best
day in Christian McCaffrey's two thousand and fifty season. Where
was the love for Christian McCaffrey because he was playing
at tem PM East. So I just don't like the
lack of consistency when it comes to the media and
the coverage of college football. Listen Barkley has been tremendous,
(01:17:11):
I give you that, But the best player in college
football for the most consistent team thus far has been
Baker Mayfield. And I don't want to get away from
that because they struggle a little bit of Baylor, I
understand that Mayfield was still tremendous. Think about what he's
been doing this year. He lost a one thousand or
fifteen hundred yard wide receiver. Indeed, Westbrook he lost two
(01:17:33):
one thousand yard running backs and SMA JP Ryan and
Joe Mixon and he's better. Uh. Look, it's hard for
me to find to default the logic of Joe clad
especially as much as he studies college football. But comparing
last year in Christian McCaffrey's big games to say Kwon
(01:17:53):
Barkley this year, and well, he says, I don't want
to take shots at with sa Kwon Barkley is doing.
I think he's great but anytime it's like that's like
when you say no disrespect. Anytime you say no disrespect,
there's probably something disrespectful coming. Right. We say, I don't
want to take shots at say Kwon Barkley, but let
me proceed to take shots at say Kwon Barkley as
great as he played at at Iowa. Look the we
(01:18:18):
you don't necessarily use stats to make up subjective argument
because if you want to do that, fine. If you
want to say that, uh, that Baker Mayfield has been
the best player thus far, fine. The issue is, I
think there's other quarterbacks that have had great years, and
(01:18:39):
here's a running back who's having a far better year
than any other running backs. And while a quarterback touches
the ball more often, can running back be more effective
and more important at least to this one individual team,
one that also throws the football. I mean, one of
the things that if you really want to compare Say
Kwon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey, like they did everything they
did was for him as opposed to sa Kwan Barkley.
(01:19:02):
On the final drive, he only touched the ball two times,
but he also picked up the picked up the blitz
twice as well. It's his ability to do a little
bit of everything. Um Mayfield has been incredible. I've never
understood how guys can be like if you win the
Heisman Trophy, like Lamar Jackson, we take shots at you
and like you can't win in a second time. Nor
(01:19:23):
do I think that Barkley should carry any sort of
burden because he'll be involved in the Highsman Trophy for
the third consecutive year. I just want people to go, like, hey,
who's had who's had the best actual season, who's been
the best actual player? And if you want to see
say that it's Baker Mayfield. Cool. I would probably say
that sa Kwan Barkley because of the plays and the
(01:19:45):
importance of some individual plays he's made. But I'm not
taking shots at Baker Mayfield the process. Yes, are you
concerned at all? Part of criticism that James Franklin, Penn
State's head coach, got is that they're giving the ball
too much to say Kwon Barkley. He had forty three
touches in that game against Iowa, and now people are
(01:20:07):
saying that you're gonna wear him out and he's gonna
be you know, toasts by the time he gets to
the NFL. Yeah, I mean I think anybody would be
concerned about that, you know, But I also don't know
se Quon Barkley is going like no, thanks, I don't
I don't want to put but is that. I know,
as a coach, you're supposed to help get them ready
for their professional careers, But especially in a game like that,
are you supposed to go, you know what, I really
want to beat Iowa, but you know what, you know, say,
(01:20:30):
Kuon Barkley has got a real shot at the NFL.
I gotta pull him here, like, how are That's such
a fine line to walk. I feel like it's unfair
to be critical of the coach in that respect. And uh,
Barkley is that he's only a junior, right, I mean,
like Christian McCaffrey had a lot of tread worn off
the tires and it hasn't necessarily affected him. I mean,
I think it's more in terms of longevity. And I
(01:20:51):
think also the difference is this is not like Ron Dane,
where people thought Ron Dane was run down after coming
out of Wisconsin with all those carriess. I just don't
think Ron Dane or those was Unson backs are particularly good,
like whereas I think Sae Kwon Barkley is legitimately this good.
I think sometimes we make excuses where guys we have
easy off ramps were like, oh, well he's worn down
from overuse in college, instead of like maybe he just
(01:21:13):
wasn't that good in college. Maybe he just wasn't that explosive,
whereas se Quon Barkley is that explosive, Is that talented?
Is that versatile, can plan first second, third down, can
run the football, can catch the football, can block in
past protection, like all of those things. That's why he
will be successful at the next level as opposed to
backs that were run down from getting the ball too much.
With True Card, you can find out what other people
(01:21:35):
in your area paid for the same card you're looking
for new or used. Visit True Card and enjoying more
confident car buying experience. Next hour, Evan Daniel will join
us from Fox Sports. We'll ask him what what the
next thing to happened. Rick Pettino we think was essentially
fired today even though he's placed on a leave of absence.
That is as a huge name. He is a Hall
of famer who has lost his gig, but coming him
(01:21:57):
next Cam Newton hurt or bad or both? Next to
the Dug God What Up? Doug Godleave show? Fox Sports
Radio Come into you live and direct from the City
of Angels. The college basketball recruiting scandal has at least
claimed one head coach. He's a Hall of Famer, Rick
(01:22:19):
Pettino was placed on administrative leave earlier today. We assume
that means he will not coach for the Cardinals ever again.
Who will replace him? And who are the other nervous programs?
We'll talk about that of coming uh in about fifteen
minutes or so. UM. A couple of the things we
(01:22:39):
say in this show quite often is um, when you
say you don't know, you do in fact, no, you're
just not willing to say what you know. I say
this all the time to my friends who are dating.
You know, you've been dating for a year, year and
a half, and you're like, oh, she the one. I
don't know, Like what are you do because you know,
(01:23:01):
if you knew, you don't suddenly learn that you know?
Just no, and you said, well, I don't know, you
do know, you know she's not the one. But the
whole process of like, ah, you know this is just
for fun and the process of finding another one who
might be the one. That's just fine, right, That's the truth.
(01:23:24):
If you ask a guy's been dating a woman for
over a year, you like, is she the one? He's like,
I don't know that. You could say, hey, I think
she is, but just financially we're not in the spot yet.
She lives there. I live here, absolutely the one. It's
just we have to get the timing all kind of
a line that's different than I don't know, because I
do don't know. Is I do know? I'm just not
willing to say. The Carolina Panthers are saying everybody's saying
(01:23:48):
they don't know, but by saying they don't know, I
think they do know. Nobody knows what's wrong with Cam Newton.
This from Mike Freeman and Bleacher report that some within
the Panthers organization believe that Cam Newton's body may already
(01:24:09):
be breaking down as ankle fixed, had his shoulder fixed
in the off season. Some believe that's the offensive line.
Some believe he may have come back too soon, which
maybe this is the genius to the Colts, which is like,
what's the point of throwing Andrew LUCKX not practicing what's
the point of throwing Andrew Luck out there if he's
(01:24:30):
not completely and totally ready to go. Because you play
a guy when he's not healthy, you run the risk
of ruining him. Instead of just ruining one season, instead
of ruining one season, you ruin the next five seasons
because you're trying to recapture the glory of earlier in
their career. But when you're saying you don't know, you
do know. Has Cam Newton ever been an accurate pastor? No?
(01:24:55):
Cam Newton style of quarterback? Running quarterback? Does that have
great launevi in the NFL? No, Steve Young didn't even
last that long and he's arguably the greatest running quarterback ever. Right,
so you're inaccurate. You wrote a lot um He's never
been great at going through his progressions, going through his reads.
(01:25:18):
He's just not a great decision making quarterback. I think
the Panthers, No, they're just not willing to say they
don't know. Well, maybe it's the Ovens a lot. It
could be like, look, it's Malcolm Glaba has the book
The Tipping Point, Because ever read The Tipping Point and
suppose that, like I think I picked up the Tipping
Point thinking that in all of these stories. And this
(01:25:39):
is I actually like Gladwell style because it reminds me
of what it was like to go to school for marketing.
Like in marketing, all you do is you study case studies.
That's way, way, way more interesting than like finance and numbers.
And I was told there be no math like I.
I remember studying the Chevy Nova, right, and they tried
to sell the Chevy Nova in Mexico. Uh, John Ramo's
(01:26:04):
nova means what in the Spanish good luck selling a
car that in in Mexico That translates into no go.
Excuse me? You want me to buy a car that's
called the no Go? Yeah? No way. Um, well, we
(01:26:24):
study I remember studying New Coke, right, New Coke's a
fascinating one. Do you guys remember New Coke? See, music
is not really old enough to remember New Coke. I
think music was born when New Coke was found out.
Oh man, do you remember New Coach? I do not know. Okay,
here's what happened. This is the true story. Back when
(01:26:46):
people used to drink soda. Do you drink soda music?
I do not. Yeah, I don't either. I mean, like,
I like occasionally I've had one. I'm like, wow, I
used to love this stuff, but I don't really know.
I used also just like pop tarts, but I've also
for the best. But do you have pop tast down?
Of course you don't know. Um. Look, they used to
(01:27:08):
There's always coke and pepsi and they do blind taste tests. Ramos,
who would win the blind taste test? Coke? No, Pepsi
would always win the blind test? Pepsi, Doug, thank you, Ramos.
Let's try this again. Take two. Who would win the
blind tastest? Pepsi? Pepsi would win the tip blind taste test,
and so coke. Even though coke was way more popular
(01:27:30):
and way more market share. Somebody came up the idea like, hey,
let's make coke taste more like pepsi. Only have the
coke logo because people were buying the coke logo because
they've grown up on coke. Coke, is it right? So
they had this reformulated thing, and they did all this,
and they had they had they had blind taste studies,
and people were new coke to old coke. So what
(01:27:53):
they do They got rid of old coke? Howd it
work out? Not good? It was a disaster. It was
a disaster, like within a year there was no new
coke ever available. They just pretended they did the what's
the thing from Men in Black? Because remember the Men
in Black? The neuralizer makes you forget everything, like new Coke,
(01:28:18):
I don't know what you're talking about, doesn't I don't
even know. It's like they did the neuralizer on everybody,
um And what they didn't realize was not just brand
loyalty to coke and our association with a flavor that
truth be told, we might actually not like as much
as another flavor. But there is also a difference between
(01:28:38):
having a sip, a blind taste test sip of pepsi
and drinking an entire can of pepsi. Pepsi is sweeter,
It's always been sweeter. That's why people like it more
in a sip. But when you drink an entire can
right or back then? Remember the Super Big Gulp? How
good was a pup likes? You just go in the
(01:28:59):
seven eleven Super Big go be like, oh, this is
the greatest thing. In Super Big Gulp form, a coke
is better because it's not even though it's super sweet.
And have you ever seen coke when it's cooked down,
it's kind of really disgusting. Right. When I played in Russia,
they actually used coke to clean out their pots and
pans the acidics. They Yeah, actually it's kind of disgusting anyway.
(01:29:19):
Cokes on sponsor to the show, I don't know not anymore.
Looks like we'll cancel that. Yes, Uh, we'll pretend but
that didn't happen. We'll do the neuralizer around them. Never
happened anyway. Uh, but when you drink an entire, super
big gulp of coke, it's a lot better. Anyway. I
(01:29:40):
remember studying case studies. So that's why I like Gladwell's
style of writing books, is he uses specific case studies
and stories and uses that you know and some of
our scientific studies, and that's analogous to a kind of
bigger narrative. Right. But the truth is that when you
(01:30:00):
read these stories a lot like the Coke story, there's
more than just the Chevy Nova failing was more than
just the fact they tried to sell it in Mexico
and it was called the Nova No Goa. There was
more issues with it than that. There was more reasons
that New Coke failed than just it was sweeter. There's
(01:30:21):
a lot in terms of their marketing, and why did
they do away with old coke? They didn't have to,
and they came back in reform member Now it's called
Coke Classic right anyway, So my my takeaway, the tipping
point from Cam Newton not being an elite quarterback anymore
was he never was an elite quarterback. It was what
(01:30:46):
we saw from from Dak Prescott last year. It was
the perfect scenario. They played a soft schedule, he had
a great defense, he had a great running game. He
had an offensive coordinator who understood it, how he used him,
use him. He was his healthiest, He was the healthiest
he had ever been. They had had uh they had
played poorly the year before and worked their way into
(01:31:09):
not plus there the Carolina Panthers, they weren't on as
many prime time games, like out of all these things,
and he had Greg Olsen and so even though they
lost Calvin Benjamin that year, they didn't have who was
supposed to be their new pass catching threat, because he
had two other good running backs, Because he had a
good offensive line, because he had a loaded defense, and
(01:31:29):
they played field position football, and they played super safe
and always put him in third and shorts, so he
didn't have to make tough decisions and they had no
issues in the locker room because they had Jettison Steve
Smith like these were all kind of it's it's like
you're reading the tipping point. There's a lot of the
reasons that something tips more than just one thing, and
(01:31:49):
that's the reason it's tipping back. He doesn't have Olson,
so he doesn't have his guy to dump off too.
Kelvin Benjamin wasn't in shape, isn't the same player he
was before he tore his a c l. Their defensive
coordinators changed, their defensive personnel has changed. They play a
more difficult schedule. The run game isn't as dominant because
(01:32:10):
their offensive line hasn't been as good the last two years.
He has been heard he probably did come back a
little bit too early, and as you age as a quarterback,
you run less, you throw more. He's not as good
as thrower. This has become an accurate pastor's game more
than a deep downfield pastors game. All of that said, ultimately,
(01:32:31):
I don't think he ever was a superstar quarterback. I
think he had a superstar reputation and we wanted him
to be better because people when he came out of college,
people said, you know, he's not that smart, he's not
that accurate, and he has to run and in the
NFL you can't run. And you know what, they were,
all right, the Nolan No, Rocky's were in fact right,
(01:32:57):
Carolina Panthers. No, they know that they're playing around the
idea like he's treated as if he's a superstar, but
he's not. And the way you have to play in
the NFL, Matt Ryan style is always going to be
better for longer than Cam Newton style, even if Cam
Newton gives you wow plays. And by the way, Cam
(01:33:19):
Newton said it himself in the year they went to
the super Bowl, there has never been a quarterback like me.
There's never been anybody as big as me, as strong
as me. They can run like me, they can throw
like me. Yes, And now we know why, because that
style does not last. That style has to have too
many things go right for it to go right. Eight
(01:33:45):
seven seven nine nine Foxes. The phone number at Gottlieb
Show is the Twitter handle Rick Pettino is out at Louisville.
Who's next? Right? I mean, who's name that is a
big help. That is a big scalp for the FBI.
Who's next find out after I tell you what I've
(01:34:08):
been sleeping on Casper mattress. Right when when you don't
sleep well, it affects your entire life, right Like, you
wake up your back hurt, you're not well rested, you're cranky,
you're not as nice with your kids, not as white,
not not as nice for your significant other. But when
you have a great night's sleep and you wake up
just fresh and rested and ready to go for your day,
(01:34:29):
and you get a night high, nice hot cup of
coffee or whatever you know, you drink a word and
juice and more, you like, feel completely different. I love
my castor mattress. Now. Look, you can try at risk
free hundred days, hundred nights. Excuse me, you can try
by day, but you're not hold on sleep unless you
do the third ship thing, um, hundred days hundred nights
risk free. And first it comes in a cool box
(01:34:52):
which you open it up and all of a sudden
kind of inflates and it's this incredibly both firm. I
don't know how they do the m and soft thing,
but it absolutely works. Go to Casper dot com. Use
the code gottlieb and you get fifty dollars towards the
purchase of your mattress. That's Casper dot Com code gottlieb.
You get a hundred nights. If you don't like it,
you call them, they pick it up from your house
(01:35:13):
and you get your money back. That's simple. Fifty dollars
towards the purchases you of your mattress Casper dot com.
In terms of conditions apply, here's a slight quote difference.

but sleight Quote gives you options, lots of options. I

All right, the big news today is in college basketball,
(01:35:36):
right where a couple of days away from practice getting
ready to get started. Yesterday they were ten people arrested
in FBI sting, four of whom were assistant coaches in
college basketball. And today the first big domino fell and
that Rick Pettino was placed on administrative leave. The assumption
is that he's going to be fired in ten days
as part of his contract. He has to being given
(01:35:57):
ten days notice for cause. That would leave fifty five
million dollars on the table. He's a Hall of Fame
coaches one two national champions, She's been seven final fours
at three different schools. That is a that is a
big scalp for somebody who was was not named specifically
in the FBI's indictment. Let's welcome in Evan Daniels, who's
(01:36:21):
a college basketball insider for Fox Sports one and Scout
dot COM's director of basketball recruiting. Evan joins us here
in the Doug galtlic Show on Fox Sports Radio. Fair
assumption to make Rick Petino's coaches last game Louisville. I
think that's a pretty fair association assumption, Doug, for sure. Okay,
what's your reaction. UM, I think I'm surprised to see
(01:36:43):
it go down this way. I think a lot of
people thought, um, the last scandal would be um kind
of the nail in the coffin, and and um, this
this is this just it just seems weird. Uh. I
listened to what you uh, what you said earlier, and
this is obviously a legendary basketball coach, a guy that
(01:37:06):
accomplished so much in this industry, and um, I guess
to kind of see it go down this way is
a little shocking and surprising. Yeah, I mean, like, look,
he was incredibly this this cannot get lost in the
story is and I know we have a tendency to
focus on the scandal at large and the litany of
scandals in which he has been associated with, um and
(01:37:28):
and and that's that's fair, But it's also fair to say, like, look,
when he was with the Knicks, they were shooting threes
before anybody thought shooting threes was a good idea. He
did it when he was at Providence, right, he embraced
the three point shot before anybody else who was an
elite coach embrace the three point shot. And when he's
with the Celtics, as much as that was a disaster,
they were tanking before tanking was cool. Uh. And in
(01:37:48):
addition to the fact that he's played different styles and
one with them at Providence to Kentucky to Louisville, and
when he won his last title at Louisville, he didn't
do it with a litany of and in duns. He
did it with good players that he had put together
to become a great basketball team. Like I look, do
I think that he's he's become pompous and in many
(01:38:11):
ways weird and caricature. Sure, but as a basketball coach,
I can't think of anybody who's been more impactful in
the game in a myriad of ways than Rick Pettino. Well,
I think you're I think you're dead all with that.
I don't think anybody would even argue against that. You can't.
You can't get past one hand if you're naming the
best coaches in college basketball. And from an impact standpoint, Uh,
(01:38:34):
he's really and I think it's what you're alluded to.
He's adapted when the game has changed, He's adapted. And
you mentioned the three point shooting, And maybe it's even
goes further than adapting. I mean he helps um move
the game in in a different direction in some ways. Um.
You know, from a pure development standpoint, I mean, anybody
that's ever been to a Ripettino practice, um, I mean
(01:38:55):
you walk away learning something. His His practices are incredible.
This is a guy that could see every position on
the floor. I've had some coaches tell me that's a
sign of a of a of a great coach. Somebody
can see every position on the floor and see everything
that's happening, and um, yeah, I mean he's obviously a
legendary coach, the first coach to take three three teams
(01:39:16):
to the final four. Alright, so, um, you have you
have these other programs that had an assistant coach, uh
get arrested yesterday, Mima, Mono, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Auburn, trying
to think who the other one was, Uh, yesterday, you
got you got four assistant coaches that end up being arrested. Like,
(01:39:37):
are those head coaches the ones that are most nervous.
There's somebody who is the most nervous that's getting the
call into the athletic director's office today and we may
we may see be the next head to fall. Well,
I think anybody any any school that was alluded to
in the fb FBI investigation is probably nervous. And it's
it doesn't dug, I don't. It doesn't stop there. I've
(01:39:59):
talked who, I would say I've talked to upwards a
fifty Division one coaches in the last two days, probably more.
And there are a lot of scared people out there.
There are there this there's a lot of nervous people.
There's no question about it. It's not I think in
some ways this could even be just the tip of
the iceberg. And a lot of people have said that
on on Twitter. But when you when you get when
(01:40:22):
you have jail time on the line and deals are made,
you never know what's going to happen. Ultimately. Is it good?
Is it a good thing? And by that I mean
I was talking Evan Daniels joining us scout dot com,
Fox Sports one college basketball insider, My brothers an assistant
coach Oregan State. Everybody knows that he's been doing this
for twenty years, and he said, I'll sleep fine because
(01:40:42):
I'm not involved in any of this stuff. I don't
we don't if I don't break rules, and I don't
have to lose any sleep over this. But he's like, look,
I kind of think it would be a good thing.
And here's why. The second somebody asked me to break
a rule instead of worrying about the n c A,
now you can say, dude, I don't want to go
to jail, and I kind of think this could be
a good thing in cleaning up part of the game
(01:41:03):
which everybody knew. I don't know if everybody knew how
bad some of this stuff was or the you know
that that there was that college coaches were taking money
keeping it for themselves in an effort to steer people
to suit guys and financial guys. But I think we
all knew it needed cleaning up. Uh could this ultimately
be a good thing? Well, I think for the guys
(01:41:23):
that don't work in I think what we've all called
the gray area, Um yeah, it cleans things up. I
mean I certainly think, Um, look, if you're not scared
of jail time or the FBI or the U S
attorney like, if that doesn't cause you to rethink how
you do things, then I don't know what will. So
(01:41:46):
I I think I think it's going to clean things
up because I think anybody that has been operating in
that arena is going to start thinking twice about doing that.
And I think there is a misconception out there, and
I think you may have even tweeted it. Not every
coach does this now. Are there planning, certainly, but not
(01:42:07):
every coach. I mean there's plenty of coaches like you
mentioned that your brother is sleeping find tonight that are
doing the same. But I think the whole thing, and
and you you you touched on it. The the kind
of the underworld of the college basketball recruiting game was
exposed for the world to see and really exposed to
the world to see in a way that none of
(01:42:27):
us ever expected. No, I I agree with that. And
I mean, you know, well, I mean you got the
guys at Scott dot com and do a phenomenal job
coving the world of recruiting. Okay, here's the other question,
and maybe this is the selfish angle. Um, this is
gonna link in. And now that you know they they've
subpoenaed guys at Nike and Merle Uh what's the guy's name,
Merle Code that was, Yeah, that was arrested yesterday. Works
(01:42:50):
for Adidas. He used to work for Nike. So I
think there's a lot of speculation that he's selling out
the Nike folks who fired him, going back a little
bit more than a year ago. Um, does it stand
a reason that there will be a substantial group of
college players that are ruled ineligible because of this? Yeah,
I think that's that's pretty obvious. I mean, Louisville and
(01:43:11):
the press conference today, UM basically said that Brian they
didn't name it my name, but said Brian Bowen was suspended. Um,
I think it's not gonna stop at him. I mean
there's twelve I think players UM talked about in that report,
and I kind of went through and figured out, uh,
basically just through googling which player was which. And you
know a lot of those guys are in college basketball
(01:43:33):
or starting it or UM. So yeah, I think there's
gonna be a handful of them. UM guy's ruled ineligible
and it may not stop here either. Okay, So again
without saying names, because you said, I got a text
from somebody who i've I respect. You said, don't be
surprised if ten guys lose their job, Like what's a
(01:43:55):
reasonable number to think coaches that are going to get
fired because of this thing. I think it's hard for
us to really know because I don't think we know
where this leads, UM. And I think that's the that's
the biggest thing. It feels to me, And I don't
know how you feel, but it feels to me that
they're searching for something bigger. Yeah, I would if they
would have had something bigger, I think they would have
lead with it. And they kind of said like, hey,
(01:44:17):
they kind of gave a hey, turn yourself in, here's
the tip line thing, and maybe going through all of
these phone records and all of these documents, Uh, they
still don't know exactly what they have, like well, we
have your playbook. Yeah, it doesn't mean you actually have
you know, I think there's some other guys in these
you know that uh, you know, there's the assistant you know,
they're they're they're waiting to see if these assistant coaches
(01:44:38):
will roll right and that the isn't that the next step? Yeah,
that's certainly what it appears that they're they're waiting on.
I mean, it's uh. I I fully believe that that
yesterday kind of marked a day of change in this world.
And I mean I think I think it's going to
clean up now. There are always going to be people
that that work in a gray area or um whatever
(01:45:03):
you want to call it. Yeah, probably, but I think
if this was a warning sign to a lot of guys,
I will I am somebody who, as you know, Evan
Evan Daniels joined us scout dot com, Fox sports one
college basketball insider. I'm somebody that I'm not to pay
the player's guy and I do think that there there
are people like, well, you know, if you paid the players, like,
none of this would have happened. I'm like, Okay, you're
(01:45:23):
paying the coaches and they're taking more money. I just
that doesn't stay. If you pay a player ten thousand dollars,
if he's offered, you know, ten thousand more, he's not
going to turn it down. I don't. I think people
are making correlations to things that that don't correlate. What's
your thoughts on the pay the player advocates saying that
this is a moment to champion their cause. Well, I
(01:45:45):
think at the end of the day, you can always
go go over the salary cap, so to speak. You
could already you know, you could pay a player and
and to entice them to go to your school, find
a way to pay him more. Um. You know, I've
I've it's kind of gone back and forth on the
players deserve to be paid. I think that they are
um compensated pretty heavily in terms of a scholarship. But
(01:46:09):
do they make these universities in the n clay a
lot of money? Yes, So I see it a couple
of different ways. Um, how this factors into it? I
don't know if it's a direct correlation. I mean maybe
maybe if if these guys were getting money, um, that
this stuff wouldn't be as egregious. Possibly, Um there, you
know there there's a lot of people saying that Tom
(01:46:30):
Crean sitting out there. Hire him as the interim, hire
him as the coach. I like the idea of a
Greg Marshall, And my logic is Greg Marshall said he'd
only live for a blue blood. And though Louisville is
not maybe a traditional blue blood, there, as close to
a blue blood as he'll ever get to. Puts him
in the A C C facilities money and he can
be his own kind of Greg Marshall's self. There's gonna
(01:46:51):
be a new athletic director there that that's the name
I would go after. What are your what do you what? What?
What's the possibilities at Louisville. Yeah, I think Greg Marshall
is a good name. I think Chris mac is a
name that that has been tossed around. And his his
wife is from Louisville. Um, there's some obvious connections there. Um,
(01:47:11):
you know, Xavier's two hours away. Um, so I think
Chris mac would be a name to to think about.
It's interesting to me, Doug, because Louisville doesn't have an
acting president. It's an interim president. The the job of
Tom jurch is is um. I mean they play some
(01:47:34):
administrative leaves, So like, how did they go about making
this higher? Who's is the interim president going to be
the one making the call? Does he? You know, there's
just so many factors here at play. I mean I
would guess, and sources told me that that David Padget
is kind of a guy acting I was, uh, interim
coach right now. I don't think he has that title,
but I think he's kind of in charge right now.
(01:47:55):
Like do they do they? Maybe it just hires somebody
for a year and try to figure out with the
next year. I mean, we're really late in the game.
Practices is supposed to start in a week for some teams. Obviously,
it's an attractive job. It's a job that a number
of coaches would want. But do they want it seven
days before the season is supposed to start. It seems
like a tough sell. Yeah, it does seem like a
(01:48:17):
tough sell. Great stuff follow Evan Daniels on Twitter. Of course,
Regia stuff Scout dot com. Uh is the website. UM
he runs it, and then of course you can see
him on Fox Sports one with our college basketball coverage
getting ready because we have a Big Ten this year
to go along with the Big East and the Pact twelve. Evan,
thanks so much for joining us. Man kind of dark days,
but it does feel like this may clean up the
(01:48:37):
sport that we we enjoy so much. I appreciate having
me on DOC. All right, that's Evan Daniels joining us.
Mike Leach had something very interesting to say about young
players going to the NFL. I'll share with you my
thoughts on that momentarily. First, so let's bring in Steven Sager.
They have the Calves have officially signed Wayne Wade now,
and you know, the first two exhibitions of the NBA
season are this Saturday and yes. As for the Patino
(01:48:59):
and related story, it was yesterday the FBI investigation resulted
in the arrest of four college basketball assistants nationally, and
the FBI has been on Louisville's campus. The Louisville head
coach Rick Pettino will be fired for now. He's on
unpaid administrative leave due to the ongoing criminal investigation to football.
Former Broncos head coach Red Miller died today. He was
eighty nine. He led the team to its first three
(01:49:21):
playoff appearances in the late nineteen seventies. The Brown say
first round defensive lineman Myles Garrett, with the bad ankle,
did not practice today, but there's a chance he will
this week. According to NFL Network final in from Major
League Baseball, Houston won its game of the regular season,
which ends on Sunday twelve to today's final at Texas,
which is lost six in a row. The win to
(01:49:41):
Justin Verlander. He's fifteen and eight at Colorado. It's now
Rocky's thirteen to three over the Marlins in the bottom
of the six, As over the Mariners five three and
the six, and it's the Giants up three one at Arizona.
Top of the six. San Francisco pitcher Matt Caine will
retire after one more start this weekend. Tonight's seven pm
Eastern Time, it's Boston and Rick Porcello ten and seventeen
(01:50:02):
hosting Toronto. The Red Sox our first place in the
AL East, three games over the Yankees. Yankees are hosting
Tampa Bay. Minnesota's at Cleveland at seven pm, easting the
twins of one five straight. They have a magic number
of one to clinch the last ale wild card birth
with the Angels slumping so badly last week, and Doug
the Cubs magic number one to clinch their division. Cubs
(01:50:22):
at Cardinals, seven pm Eastern. How about Matt Kane, Right, Like,
he's been been an All Star um and he's won
a couple of World Series. Perfect game, he had a
perfect game, but he's really struggled the last couple of
years to the point where he now has a losing
record for his career. Yeah, nineteen and forty with a
(01:50:44):
four point eight six e r A And uh, that's
that's over the last five seasons. Like it is, it
has gone downhill. So I mean he's he's calling it.
He's calling in a day, but you know baseball is
kind of catching up to him. Yeah, and the multi
year deal is finishing. This is perfect. You know they
weren't gonna pay you, probably nobody else, so call it
a day. They're giving him one more start as a
(01:51:05):
courtesy this weekend. And as the l A Times tweeted out,
Matt Kine, yes losing record never top five cy young,
I believe they said, and he's earned over a hundred
million dollars in his career and has no ct Uh
that's that's true. But you know again, but this is
we we make this. It's interesting we make this uh uh,
this thought about pitchers in baseball like that there's just
(01:51:27):
only a certain number of guys that are blessed with
that that those arms and and will it hold out?
And and we'll you know, will the will the arm
hold up? And how much that changes when you take
p d s out of baseball? Uh? You know, plus
power hitters have dramatically changed the game. Like look, the
one thing as we get ready for baseball in the
playoffs is much like the NBA has played differently, baseball
(01:51:49):
is played differently. Like I understand, I understand, um um,
I understand that that we we've stopped paying attention to
a regular season baseball. I got it. I got baseball
a d D at about game like one fifty. I'm
like I just because I wake up every morning, I
check out the app and I'm like, all, I who
want to? I look, I got a couple of buddies
that played the Indians in a row. Was fascinating to
(01:52:11):
me um watching the Yankees and Aaron Judge's number, my
boy Holiday who plays for him. The Angels somehow hovered
around five were actually in the wild car Race, even
though I think there are a crumby team. That was
remarkable to me. But you know, it's much like golf.
When for me, when I play golf, I get to
the fourteenth hole, I got golf a d D. I'm like,
I am so done. Like can we just if somebody
(01:52:34):
goes like, hey, you good, Like, yeah, I'm good, that's
like baseball at about game. To me, I got golf
a d D. Baseball a d D as well. But
as we get ready for the playoffs, you should understand
they've hit more home runs ever in baseball, but they're
batting averages way down on base way down. And the
reason is, you know, we want to say launch angle.
(01:52:56):
It's not swinging with an uppercut like Dave Kingman used
to but the launching. The guys are trying to hit
lower half of the baseball and it's all the analytics crowd.
The same people that said getting on base is more
important than simply getting a hit of the same people
telling them hitting a home run is better than anything
else because you don't have to put together a bunch
of hits. And how that how New age baseball adjust
(01:53:20):
to postseason baseball is gonna be fascinating because you have
a much smaller sample size. Mike Leach said something really
really interesting about young players in the NFL. Get in
the NFL. I'll get to that. Plus the latest news
regarding the Packers only proves my point about the greatness
of Aaron Rodgers. Share both of those with you. Up
coming next, What True Car. You can find out what
(01:53:41):
other people in your area paid for the same car
you're looking for, new or used. Visit True Car to
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. UM, I like Mike Leach. We generally won't
have Mike. We have my Gleach. It'll be a taped interview,
not because he's not awesome, but because he rambles. He does,
like have you ever had him on? He says a
(01:54:03):
lot of interesting stuff, but he just rambles. It's like
it at It's like a two or three question interview.
But he does say he has a strong opinion. Friday
Night up in the Polus, I want to go to
the Polus for a game Wazoo hosting USC. If you've
looked at USC schedule, like this is a game in
which they could get clipped. Uh, what's is the quarterbacks day?
(01:54:25):
Nick falk is the quarterback. He has another pro prospect.
Washington State games like four and a half hours long
because they throw the ball every freaking down. Um, but
it's kind of interesting. He was asked a question about
Sam Donald and he used it to take an off
ramp and talk about young players entering the NFL. Here's
what he had to say. Oh, I think he could be.
I don't think he is today. You know, I get
(01:54:46):
a kick out everybody thinks one eighteen year old after
another's ready ready to go to the NFL. I think
that's laughable. And I think they're in some rare, rare, rare,
rare occasions. A guy can do that. You know, Kobe
Bryant did us A. They act like, well everybody, No,
Kobe Bryant can do it. Not everybody can do it.
That's listen. That's just a portion of what he said.
(01:55:06):
And remember, Sam Donald is twenty he will actually be
twenty one. UM. In the middle of the summer he's
a red shirt sophomore, and twenty for redshirt sophomore is
actually quite young in college, especially for a quarterback like
Donald's unique because he was he wasn't like one of
these prototype quarterbacks. He wasn't one of these guys that
(01:55:29):
that did all of the seven on seven stuff. He
wasn't held back in eighth grade, so that he was
twenty years old when he finished high school. Matter of fact, um,
there's a high school point guard at Modern Day, which
is also in Orange County where Sam Donald grew up,
whose nineteen turns twenty this summer. Donald is twenty and
he's a red shirt sophomore quarterback at SC right. So
(01:55:52):
I think the point that Leech makes is that what
what what the senator meant to say? And even Kobe Bryant,
like we act like Kobe Ryant hit the NBA running
and he was awesome right away. Remember the airball in
the playoffs. He was not good his rookie season. Kevin
Garnett was not good his rookie season. Now eventually they
(01:56:14):
became all time greats in future Hall of Famers, no
question about it. But we cannot set the standard for
players ability to go to the pros based upon a
handful of guys. Right, like Lebron James had thirties first
night in the NBA. Most guys are went far, far
from ready. What's maybe more interesting about it is now
(01:56:35):
there's exceptions to this, but like let's say Sam Donald
came out and he goes to the Jets and he's
not ready, and he stinks for the Jets for two
years or even a year. He stinks for the Jets
because he's not ready. It's really hard to come back
from that. Whereas when you're an NBA player and you
struggle in your first year, you start going your first year.
(01:56:57):
Think about Jared Goff, how hard it is to convince
somebody that, hey, Jared, golf's actually pretty. Is like I'm
having trouble buying in like, wait, is your golf good? Now?
Was he just too young last year? Do you not
have good enough? I mean, like we talked about with
this with Cam Newton, he has better players around him,
he has a better offensive coach, is a better quarterback
coach um, and he has some experience. He's older, he's stronger,
(01:57:21):
he's gotten the full camp, the full offseason. Like all
of those factors and now golf looks to be better,
but it's you still have a really hard time convincing
yourself that he's just better because of all those things.
You're like, well, maybe it's just Sean McVeigh looks. Sean
McVeigh made Kirk Cousins look like a hundred million dollar quarterback,
Whereas in the NBA you can stink right away and
(01:57:44):
still be well regarded just because you're too young. Just
what he got, Steve, Well, you've talked about Cam Newton
during the show today. He and the Panthers are going
up against the Patriots this weekend. Last week, New England
had a hard time stopping DeShawn Watson, Texans young quarterback mobile,
and today reporters asked New England coach Bill Belichick whether
(01:58:07):
Watson and Newton run in similar situations. Among the many
things Belichick said, he said, I think when you're talking
about mobile quarterbacks, I would put Newton at the top
of the list, not saying the other guys aren't a problem,
because they are, but he's public enemy number one. Of course,
the only time Belichick faced Cam Newton, it was he
was great. Since then, he's had ankle surgery, shoulder surgery
(01:58:29):
and the Panthers are trying to get him to run
less often. Yeah, I mean I also think it's the
team they're getting ready to play. Um, Watson ran a lot.
Watson was was effective also through a couple of picks
for him. But I think a lot of this is
you always say nice things about the team you're gonna play,
So it's not the Belichicks behind the times you're saying
that he's also And I also think that Cam Newton
(01:58:50):
probably is still better than Deshaun Watson at this point
his career. Even if Deshaun Watson didn't play well, Shawn
Watson starting like his second game as an NFL player.
We have a game to marrowd I with the Packers
and Bears. Looks like Green Bay is gonna be missing
each starting tackle. David back Tr on the left Brian
Bologa on the right, both listed as doubtful now in
the final injury report. Back Tr with a hamstring Entry,
(01:59:11):
has missed the last couple of games. His teammate Bologa
made his regular station debut last week and then aggravated
the ankle injury. You know, Um, I think this is
gonna be interesting to watch because the Bears defense is
actually pretty good. That that's not a tip. Now, Aaron
Rodgers has traditionally destroyed the Chicago Bears, but doing it
(01:59:32):
without your two starting tackles, that is a recipe for dissaster.
Randall Cobb wide receiver is at least due to be back.
Have you heard the the Carson Wentz Jake Elliott's story
with Philly That a video. I've seen the video. I
tweeted out the video. The quarterback saying to the young kicker,
if you make this game winning six, he said it
(01:59:52):
to a teammate, if he makes it, I'll give him
my game check. That's what he said that and he
was miked up for the game. The kicker apparently was
unaware of the offer. Did make the kick, of course,
sixty one yards. They've worked something out. They're gonna donate
the money to charity, a charity of the kicker's choice.
That would be about thirty thousand. What if he's the
charity will donated to the charity of my choice. And
(02:00:18):
by a charity, I mean the Carson Wentz Foundation, which
has just been organized haphazardly. Lebron happy to be reunited
with Dwyane Wade. It is official now that we passed
five pm Eastern time. In fact, Wade due to join
the evening practice reportedly them better in minimum offer has
been accepted a one year deal to go to Cleveland.
Lebron spoke after practice said I'm happy we're getting him
(02:00:41):
to keep him away from everybody else. There were other
offers Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Miami. Lebron says, it's a guy.
Come on like, it's one of my best friends. Kind
of like when you start school, you walk in the classroom,
you're not quite sure your classmates are, and you walk
in there one of your best friends is there. It's like,
oh yeah, that's gonna be fun. It's gonna be a
good class That's the type of feeling I got. End quote,
(02:01:03):
and we'll see. I don't know. Getting getting the band
back together sounds like a good thing. Doesn't mean it
always is in fact a good thing. Tiger Woods in
the news because he was at a President's Cup news
conference in New Jersey, saying I don't know what the
future holds for me regarding the golf. Doesn't no better
return to competitive golf. The pain's going, he says, I
don't know what my golfing body is going to be
(02:01:24):
like because I haven't hit a golf shot yet. He's
missed all of the major's past couple of years. Said
there's no pain when he chips and puts at home
after all the back surgeries. You may, you may putt
for dough, but he needs to drive for show. And
he can't drive for show if he can't move his back. Um.
And maybe this is like what we said earlier, like
Tiler tiger Wood saying he doesn't know about his golf
(02:01:45):
swing actually tells us he does know about his golf swing.
And how about this headline that your beloved producer found.
Spanish woman wants to open up a grave to prove
that she's alive. A fifty three year old woman in
southern Spain at South in Spain is but able to
unable to renew the driver's license, unable to go to
the doctor since because various government officials say she is dead.
(02:02:08):
The result of a seven year old clerical error, there
was a woman in Malaga who was declared dead and buried.
In Her information, including full name and date of birth,
match this woman's exactly She first learned of the air
when she visited the emergency room and her primary care
physician checked her out, looked at her, not knowing how
to break it to her, and told her that, according
(02:02:29):
to so security records, she was deceased. The daughters told
in the local newspaper the family has not found the
funny side of this story for a long time. This
is why you name your kid Wolfgang or Puck or
Wolfgang Puck the press. Rick Pattino is essentially out of
a job. And I look, while I do think you
(02:02:50):
have to tell both sides of somebody's complete life story, right,
the good, the bad, the really weird sex in an
Italian restaurant that his buddy owns, and the fact that
at his buddy end up marrying the girl and it
was a great basketball coach. Unfortunately, this is how it ends.
