Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Sports Boom, What up to you on
a Monday Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio phone number
eight seven seven on Fox. That's eight seven seven six
six three six nine. Welcome in. What a boring sports
Saturday we had? Right, just a horrendous sports Saturday. I
(00:24):
know there is UFC late at night. I know there's
NHL hockey, But because of the jumbling of the schedules
where the Western Conference Finals starts before the Eastern Conference
Semifinals ends, we had this lull left or great game
on Friday night, which, of course the conclusion of that
series is tonight. We'll get to that John Wall game winner,
(00:45):
and uh, all these DC media guys are all bent
out of shape over something Colin said seven years ago,
Like you said something mean seven years ago, and we're
still mad. We'll get to whether or not that has
anything to do with Colin pointing out John Wall's lack
of overall national, even local popularity. We'll get to that upcoming,
(01:07):
Plus a preview of Whiz Celtics Game seven to decide
who's gonna lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which one of
you guys wants to lose, to the Cavaliers. More you
you speaking of losing. The San Antonio Spurs lost one
thirteen to one eleven. But the story is so much
(01:29):
more interesting than just the fact that they had a
big lead, that they were up what sixty two to
what's the sixty two to forty two at the half,
They're up twenty at the half of twenty five in
the second half and lose. Steph has eighteen and the
third quarter forty for the game, k d carries him
(01:49):
down the stretch and the Warriors win. Like if you
just go and pop in and check out the box scores,
you're like, yeah, it kind of makes sense, right, Like
everybody knew the Warriors are gonna make a run, which
you didn't know was that first David Lee would take
out Kawhi Leonard. Kauai hits a jump shot, back pedals
into the bench, steps on David Lee his teammate's foot,
and then ja Ja Pashulia would complete the task and
(02:12):
sweep the leg on Kauhi Leonard. Kawhi Leonard to just
point out how how he was smoking twenty six points
in twenty four minutes on thirteen shots and a plus
twenty one in plus minus. He was on fire, he
was unguardable, He was a very tough matchup. He is,
(02:33):
of course the best player for the San Antonio's first
and just like everybody seemed to point out that when
they beat the Houston Rockets last Thursday night and did
so by thirty nine points, like we could point out
that Kauai didn't play, But that game was all about
the the the m i a of of James Harden.
(02:54):
This game was all about just how good Kauai is,
how much he means to this team him and how
devastating not just the losses, but the loss in this
fashion and losing him and the potential of losing him
for game two is. There's a bunch to get to first.
I thought this was interesting. Here's Monogen nobly after the game,
and Mono, we told you last week just like all
(03:16):
old dudes, right, being as good as he once was,
But he's as good once as he ever was. Yesterday
he was as good as he ever was. Seventeen points hit,
some three's got some block shots, but couldn't make plays
down the stretch without Kauai. Leonard. Here's Mono on how
devastating it was. It's very hard to react from a
game like this. I was just saying in Spanish that
I always preferred to lose by twenty a game like this,
(03:38):
in which case the home team relaxes a little bit,
feels good about themselves, and we're hurt. We were angry,
and the opposite happened. We played an outstanding game for
more for half, and then they came back. They overplayed us.
They were more aggressive than more shots, So he sees
tough on. Besides, if it wasn't bad enough, we lost
(03:58):
our best player. Outside of that, Mrs Lincoln, how is
the show right? We don't have Tony Parker. We're up
twenty five points, We badly outplay them. They come back
and pressure us, and we succumbed to the pressure. And
oh yeah, by the way, Kawahi Leonardyho was smoking hot.
Playing a great game gets her losing for the rest
of that game, lose the game and potentially losing for
game two. That's a great thing. And and he's that's
(04:20):
the old Is it better to have loved and lost
than never to have loved at all? And clearly Mono
is the never to have loved at all. The most
interesting commentary is that of Greg Popish. Let me tell
you what I love about Gregg Popish when he speaks.
I don't agree with everything he says, but I think
he's thoughtful. I think he's opinionated. I think he's unafraid.
I think he's reached the NBA version of the Spurrier Zone.
(04:42):
You guys know what the Spurrier's on is. The Spurrier
zone is an offshoot of the Tyson zone. The Tyson
zone was. I think Bill Simmons coined that the Tyson
one zone was there's no story about Mike Tyson that
you wouldn't believe. Right, You're like Mike Tyson maulled the bear.
You're like, okay, I can see the it. Like Mike
Tyson just drank a snake's blood and then pounded down
(05:04):
with like three shots. Like I could see that. There's
no story about Mike Tyson you wun't believe. That's the
Tyson zone. The Spurrier zone is once you've gotten to
a point in your career as a coach to where
you're so well respected that you can say whatever you
want whenever you want. You just kinda let your nuts have, right,
You're just like Steve Spurrier remember one year like, well,
(05:26):
I'm playing ain't playing Georgia only year. That's too bad
because you know they always have a couple of gays
to Spendish dark season. And he was right. But like
no coach ever says that except Spurrier. Why because Spurrier
one at Florida, Spurrier one at Duke. You want a
high span trop you want a national championship. And then
he got South Carolina to Atlanta, which is like winning
a national championship elsewhere. That's the Spurrier zone. Well you
(05:49):
can say kind of whatever you really feel, because at
the end of the day, he's got rings, he's got equity,
and you don't pop is in that. Here's the problem
I have with Pap. He always wants to speak his mind,
except when a side that reporter asked him a question,
like Doris Burke is. She's an analyst playing the role
(06:11):
of sidelin reporter. She's the good as sideline putter as
there is in the sport because she knows the right
questions to ask. And even she was like, ask one question,
got a one word answer. I'm moving on to wish
everybody a happy Mother's Day, So I I hate the
fake tough guy. I'm gonna intimidate everybody. I don't want
to do this sideline thing, even though they tell me
I have to do it. I want to talk when
(06:31):
I want to talk, But when I want to talk,
everybody's gotta listen. On the other hand, pob does say
some things to which when he uh uses his First
Amendment rights, he says exactly what's on his mind when
it's on his mind. Here is Greg Popovitch earlier today
talking about Jaja Pashulia, who's the starting center for the
(06:53):
Golden State Warriors, spraying the ankle of Kawhi Leonard deployed
where he took Hawaide down and locked his arm in
Dallas and could have broken his arm. Asked David West,
his current teammate, how things went when jos I was
playing for Dallas and he and David got into it,
And then think about the history he's had and what
that means to a team. What happens last night and
(07:15):
totally unnatural closed out that the league has outlawed years
ago and paid great attention to it. And Kauai is
not there, And you want to know how we feel
about You want to know if that lessons are chances
or not. We're playing very possibly the best team in
the league. You know, we don't know what's gonna happen
in the East. Nine point seven five people out of
(07:36):
ten would figure the Warriors will beat the Spurs. Well,
we've had a pretty damn good season. We've played fairly
well in the playoffs. I think we're getting better. And
we're up twenty three points in the third quarter against
Golden State and Kauai goes down like that, and you
want to know if our chances are less and you
want to know how we feel. That's how we feel.
(07:59):
I think Popavish fields right, not shy with it. He's
in the spurior zone. He can say whatever he wants
as soon as it's on his money. Went on an
anti Trump diet tribe before the game, He goes on
an anti josh A Patulia diet tribe after the game today,
And he's right. It's one of those things in sports
to which we kind of sometimes cut out the wrong things,
(08:22):
like Draymond Green got a technical foul yesterday for talking
trash for Wolf and if you will, and he got
his money's worth afterwards, but he shouldn't have gotten the
initial technical foul, like that's not a technical foul, and
yet that that's a technical foul, and yet Jasja Pasulia,
that's a foul, like that should be an injection. And
(08:42):
I love the fact that Popovich brought up later brought
up manslaughter. Right, They're like, oh, did he mean to
do it? Pop said this, if he would have played
and they'd ended up winning, I go get dinner, have
a glass of wine, wake up the next day, go
to practice, and move on. But this is crap. And
because he's got this history, it can't just be oh,
it was inadvertent, he didn't have intent. Who gives a
(09:02):
damn about what his intent was. Do you ever hear
a manslaughter? You still go to jail. I think when
you're texting and you end up killing somebody, but you
might not have intended to do that. All I care
is what I saw. All I care about is what
I What happened in the history of their exacerbates the
whole situation and makes me very very angry. Look, I
think there's a there's a point to be made for
(09:25):
Ja in that there's a certain Matthew Delava dova Uh
to his style, a certain Bruce Bowen even to his
style in which when you're not as athletically gifted as
so many of these guys that and you're you're playing hard,
you can play what I call playing too hard, right,
you can close out too hard. You can't run underneath dudes.
(09:46):
Any basketball player, especially the higher level you play, they
will tell you they are more concerned about knowing where
they're gonna come down than the contact when they go up.
And we're so concerned about shots to the head. We
always review them. They always go review shots to the head.
But all guys care about is do I know what's
underneath me when I'm coming down and how I'm coming down.
(10:09):
So there's a there's a certain lost in translation because
a lot of people who cover basketball don't actually know basketball,
and Twitter kind of exposes that. And frankly yesterday like, look,
i'mson there listening to Jeff Van Gundhi, and everything he's
saying is what I'm thinking. Mark Jackson saying things which
I completely disagree with. So there's different ways to look
(10:32):
at it. But I'm fascinated by this, uh, this amount
of fortune, this amount of luck that the Warriors have
run upon, Like if this if they end up winning
a title, they end up winning two out of three
and seventy three wins and three NBA Finals wins in between.
(10:53):
That's what they would have they win a title. The
story will be, this is a burgeoning dynasty, right, They
revamped bench, they brought in Kevin Durant, everybody resigns. They're
doing They're doing so with Steve Kirk coaching in the
locker room and Mike Brown coaching on the bench. Like,
there's a lot of interesting parts to it. But isn't
(11:13):
it fascinating how every team they played in their first
title run had injuries and now every team they're playing
now has injuries. And this fury cute, likable team has
Draymond Green last year kicking guys in the nuts and
this year's Jaja Petulia stepping under the best player on
the Spurs, and you got Popovich in the Spurrier zone.
(11:37):
And though the though the you would think that the
outcome of the series is a foregone conclusion even before
they threw it up, the fact is, if you watched
that game last night, Kawhi Leonard was the one main
reason that the series was not a foregone conclusion. And
(11:58):
now it is nowadays. Give me your thoughts. You can
tweet me at Gottlieb Show. You can call use eight
seven seven six three six nine. We'll get the thoughts
of Frank Vogel, He's the Orlando Magic head coach on
jaj Pashulia. Look, he's played it. There's all all kinds
of guys like this in the league, which they are
a little bit a slight bit slower a foot athletically,
(12:21):
but they make up for with effort. How do you
balance out between trying to close out on a great
seven foot jump shooter and hey man, you can't run
underneath somebody's legs. And then we'll ask him about tonight's game,
how do you stop Isaiah Thomas? How do you slow
John Wall? And doesn't even matter because neither seems to
have a chance against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Frank Vogel, who
(12:43):
of course coached the Indiana Pacers previously to coaching the Magic,
will be our guest next on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

(13:15):
Frank Vogel is gonna join us in moments. The Orlando
Magic head coach get his thoughts on how he's gonna
carry the good juju, the good luck, the good charm
to the upcoming draft lottery. Most likely they get the
sixth pick in the draft. More Night's the NBA Draft lottery. Right?
Did they should have retired Elgin Baylor's uh sport code
(13:35):
in AFRO? Right? Shouldn't they have? Because he was He
was a yearly presence there for so much longer than
anybody else. But look the magic they've uh, they've They've
been fortunate to get that number one pick overall in
previous draft lotters. We have uncovered some secret sound. I
don't know if you guys saw so. Early in the
(13:56):
third quarter, uh Kawhi Learnd hit a jump shot back
and actually stepped on the foot of David Lee, his teammate,
turning his already sprained ankle. Memory sprained his ankle. Going
back to the previous series, in Game five against the
Houston rockets. So I don't know if you guys saw.
There was a moment in the third quarter, after he
(14:18):
had rolled his ankle on his teammates foot and before
he stepped on Jaja Pashulia, who had the what was
it dirt called an unnatural close out right, that's what
Greg Pops said. An unnatural that's a new one. That
one I'm writing down right now. Unnatural clothes out Okay,
that's a new one. Unnatural clothes before the unnatural. So
(14:40):
this was this is this is the first time it's
been playing. This is the sound of a conversation which
apparently took place on the floor allegedly between Draymond Green
and Josh Paulia. Sweep the lick. You have a problem
with that? Listen see normal. Okay, I think that settles that. Yeah,
(15:08):
that's that's a little bit more than manslaughter, isn't it.
That's that that shows a little bit of intent there.
Uh that this's reckless, reckless behavior, Mayda tweets in I
can I can remember all those times Pop called out
Bowen for doing the exact same thing. Oh wait, uh look,
I don't remember. I remember Bruce Bowen being a physical defender.
(15:29):
I don't remember him running underneath dudes. I just don't.
But do I think that Bruce Bowen, because of a
lack of overall skill, had to do some of these
little tricks and had to play a little bit too
hard in order to stay on the floor. Yeah, I do.
I think that would be That would be fair. It
is different. Like, honestly, running underneath the dude is second.
(15:49):
Only two pushing a guy when he's already in the air, Like,
those are the two absolute no nos in basketball. I
know that many of you think that because the rule
changes that you know you can no longer chin the ball.
Rama's you know, chinning the ball and chinning the ball
is used to when you're a big rebounder in high school.
People don't know Ramos is actually about six three six
(16:10):
four two and seventeen pounds of pure steel. I mean
he looks the part of a linebacker. He was a
very good power forward growing up in high school. Very good. Yes. St.
Francis High School and Kanata French Ridge shout out to them,
locking YadA Flintridge right, great school system. Um, so, when
you get a rebound, you used used to be taught
to chin the ball. You get the ball underneath your
(16:33):
elbows out so nobody comes in again, and anytime somebody
comes in and gets it, if they happen to get
a little piece of elbow and the fair Hey, basketball
is a contact sport. Football is the collision sport. Basketball's
a context. Well, they have since outlawed the elbowing because
of the whissification of America, right like, hey, dude, it's
not my fault you got elbow hood. You put your
face in my elbow. You tried to steal my basketball.
(16:55):
I'm simply protecting it. So it's like the guy who
gets mad because he reached in and grabbed a se
sea urchin and the sea urchin stung him with those spikes.
Sea urchins yummy by the one, believe it is. So
they've outlawed that because non basketball playing America thinks that
(17:16):
catching a bow is somehow gonna do harm to a guy.
And it will like you'll break your nose, you'll get
popped in the face, like that happens, but you will
kind of like my dog with a like look. They
don't have a much in California because people don't have
big enough yards. But the old electric fence, you guys
know the electric the electric fences. So we have we
(17:37):
have dog, we have electric fence, electric fence. You put
up these flags and then the flags are signals to them,
and then it the fence beeps and then you pull
them back. And then people always ask, well, what happens
if they go through the beep. We're like, okay, well
that's when it gets funny. Uh, they get shocked, they
get zapped ones and most dogs one or two zaps,
and they hear the beep and they know that the
(17:58):
zapp's gonna follow, and they just turn around and they
are taught. They are good. What's the same thing with
reaching in on a guy who's got the basketball chinned,
he's got a chinned You reach in, you get an elbow.
Guess what you're not gonna do again. You're not gonna
reach in and try and steal somebody's rebound. But so
we've taken that out of the game, and yet nobody
(18:19):
who plays basketball think that that's ultimately going to do
a tremendous amount of harm to a player, whereas touching
a guy when he's in the air does, or running
up underneath him so they could possibly land on your foot,
that's like a surefire a c l Achilles knee. You
just don't feel right about coming down on somebody else's foot.
(18:41):
But that sound is alleged. It may not be from
the game, and maybe from the game. We thought we
heard it, we thought we would played for you were
real quick. Let me again. This is supposedly Draymond Green
speaking with speaking with Pulia Sweep to lick. You have
a problem with that, no sense nor mercy. And I
(19:08):
love the fact that like my boy Nick right who
congratulates to Nick and Chris, they're gonna have a morning show. Um,
what is it gonna be called? Forget it was? Actually
it's actually a cool name. I saw it Friday. They're
gonna have a morning show on Fox Sports one. But
Nick Wright has been all over. He's been all over
First Things First, First Things First, and Fox Sports one.
(19:30):
He's been all over. Kwaie Leonard looked they one without him,
There's seven and one with him in the regular season.
Obviously not that valuable in the context of yesterday's game,
It could not be a more valuable player, including all
of the players on the Golden State Warriors. Factor in
Tony Parker's not playing, factory factor in the fact that
(19:51):
he was really the Him and LaMarcus Aldridge were the
only two mismatches. But they could double team LaMarcus Aldridge
late in the game because Kauai wasn't in. And look,
the Spurs still nearly pulled it off, but they're up
twenty five points twenty four when he goes down with
injury and they lose. You want to tell me he's
not that valuable because they won a game and a
quarter without him. Fine, The fact is he's versatile, he
(20:14):
plays both ends, and he was playing an extremely high level.
And in the matchup against the Warriors, they had no
answer for Kawhi Leonard none, none, zero, zilch zip na.
Derek Jeter got to recognize. Yesterday they retired the number
(20:36):
two jersey, which means there's no more single digit jerseys
for the Yankees. Here's my problem with it. Do you
know whose number is retires number six? Like you you
know all the all the numbers for the Yankees, right music?
Do you know the numbers for the Yankees? I the
only I only know to come to mind, obviously Jeter
(20:57):
number two, Babe Ruth number three, Billy Martin's number one,
Bill but was a great player, but like you're not
old enough to Again, sorry I'm not doing the I'm
super old deal, but you're not old enough to remember,
Like he was hired and fired continually as the manager
of the Yankees because George Steinbrener was a lunatic, Like
a lot of this is what you remember last um
(21:19):
people remember George Steinbrenner with Derek Jeter's era, finally getting
a winner. But but he was like George Steinberg was
kicked out of baseball for a period of time for
what he did to Dave Winfield. Like he was a
bad guy for a long time, and he just happened
to get lightning in a bottle. Billy Martin one, Derek
Jeter to Babe Ruth three, lou Gary iron Horse four,
(21:41):
Joe DiMaggio five, Mickey Mantle is seven, Bill Dickey and
Yogi Bara both eight. Do you know who number six is? Nine?
By the way, is Roger Merris and Marris is um.
The Marist one is interesting because Roger Marris was a
(22:02):
seven time All Star, two time AO m v P.
Most he's most remembered for the sixty one home runs, right,
but he's actually a really good player, really good player.
Only in sixty and sixte and uh sixty he won
the Gold Globe. I don't believe he was nearly at
the level of everybody else we mentioned. But why is
(22:27):
Joe Tories number six retired? Like, if you want to
tell me that Joe Tori is one of the all
time great managers in baseball, fine, but you kind of
pick out your number randomly, like that number can be
doubled up correct. Like there's it's the really weird, kind
of uncomfortable thing of that these baseball managers have to
(22:48):
wear uniforms, so they trot out there, but their number
is completely inconsequential. So even though they only have all
the single digit numbers are retired, Like why is Tories numbers?
I'm not saying that Joe Torre doesn't deserve some sort
of honor, but honoring retiring his number when he never
threw a pitch, never hit a pitch in an important game. Um,
(23:12):
And look, he was a very good player in his
own right, and people forget like, but you know what
he wasn't as a player. He wasn't a New York Yankee,
So why are you retiring his number? That one's weird debate,
and I know it's like it's already been done and
now you're like, oh wait, do we have to can
we unretire that? Or could that just be retired for
(23:33):
managers only? Like no managers can wear six ever? Again,
the Dodgers retired two for timeless sort of, so nobody
care too. So it's the same theory, right, they shouldn't
be retired the number two according to you, Like does
anybody remember Tommy Lessorda's number two? Like everybody remembers forty
two for the Dodgers because forty two there's a Jackie
(23:56):
Robinson day, and forty two for the Yankees will soon
be retired. It's own Rivera and like everybody because the
number is synonymous with the player, but the number is
not synonymous with the manager. It is inconsequential with the manager.
I'm not saying to not honor the manager, but to
honor the manager with the retired number, as if they
played a game, which most of us don't really understand
(24:17):
why they even where jerseys or have numbers anymore. I
think only doubles down in the stupidity. Alright, still searching,
is Vogo is gonna join us? Next? We think we
don't know. We have been told that he will be
calling in soon. Find out if he believes that's real audio.
Let's find out what's trending when things come out of
(24:38):
left field. Having a game plan matters. Farmers Insurance has
over eighty nine years of experience helping people play through
every stage of the game. We've seen almost everything, so
we knew how to cover almost anything. Visit Farmers dot com.
We are Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. The pat
(25:05):
my Home story is a scary one, right so, just
drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. The air apparent at
quarterback robbed at gunpoint along with a couple of his friends.
They did apprehend two suspects. There's an old time radio.
Do you guys have any familiarity with old time radio?
It's the old time radio. So um, this is kind
of like now you're gonna get a chance to know
me a little bit better. Doug Gotlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(25:26):
You can follow us on Facebook. You can listen to
us on the r Heart app Of course, we're so
pleased to be back on Sirius XM channel eighty three,
loud and clear on on silent Radio of course and
all on all our terrest real stations, including Buddy Mud
and Chicago listening to us J Row on a M
eight hundred. There we go. Uh, there's a but I'm
(25:50):
actually a fan of old time radio. Like I'm talking
thirties and forties and early fifties radio. I'm not making
this up true. That's thank you Ramos, Jack Benny, Burns,
and Allen the Bickerson's. So, my dad was my au
(26:12):
coach and we would drive all around southern California picking
up guys for practice and dropping them off. And he
was like an old souled hard and we were listening
to these old time radio cassettes. Well, he loved the
Jack Benny Show, okay, And Jack Benny was synonymous with
being cheap, you know that, right? He was that he
was the cheap guy. And there's a famous scene from uh,
(26:35):
several of Jack Benny's radio shows. Ramos, I don't know
if you knew how this went, where he gets held
up and says, I, hey, buddy, your money in your life?
Your money in your life? You know what? Jack Benny says.
I'm thinking it over a great line. I was thinking
about that with the somebody holds you up at gunpoint, right,
you just go. The best thing would probably be like
(26:58):
you hand him your here, you want my phone? Here?
How my phone? It has my Find my Phone app,
so it's gonna be able to track you down. But
that's a that's a no brainer. You hold up, you
hold me up. Here you go. But of course it
also makes you think of one of the scenes of
all the original Batman. Right, well, that's how Bruce Wayne's
dad was shot. He wasn't even trying to be I
(27:20):
don't think he wasn't trying to be a hero. Right shop,
waiting on Frank Vogel. In the meantime, let's catch you
up in some things you missed as we uh reach
into my sack, Let's reach into godly sack every day
at this time when the Doug Gottlieb, shall we find
(27:42):
something interesting in my sack? Kind of a way to
play a game for me to answer questions. We bring
in Dan Buyer, who I was listening to yesterday morning
on Fox Sports Trading. What a great show that was
yesterday morning. Thank you. How are you? I'm doing well?
Thanks for popping on with a little Derek Jeter conversation.
Sure I want to have that after we get down
with the sacks. So what do you got? Alright, well,
I'll tell you one thing. We don't have Frank Vogel
(28:02):
in the sack, but we do have a big deal,
little deal, no deal. All right, that's what we've got
right now. So, Doug, big deal, little deal or no deal.
That rocket scard James Harden was at his slowest in
Game six of the Western Conference semis. This according to
ESPN data, no player who played more than ten minutes
in that Game six was slower than Hardened harden speed
(28:23):
actually fell in the postseason from the regular season, running
at to the average of three point six eight miles
per hour down to three point five three miles per hour.
But big deal, little deal or no deal that James
Harden wore down in the postseason, I think it's a
big deal. Here's why it's a big deal. The reason
that one of the big reasons Oklahoma City traded him
(28:43):
after reaching the NBA Finals wasn't just the disparity and
what they were offering contract wise and what James Harden
won a contract wise. It was that when they were
in the NBA Finals, he wasn't at his best, and
he kept going out at night. Like, look, there's a
level of dedication. I understand that Michael Jordan would go out,
and I've told you Gary Payton would go out, put
his last beer down, coming to shoot around, take a
(29:04):
nap all day, and go out and give guys twenty
and ten. But some people's bodies don't respond as such.
Like the reason James Harden struggled out the shoot last
year shooting and conditioning wise, was because he was hanging
out with the Kardashians right building up. His brand wasn't
in shape. This year, he came in in phenomenal shape.
But he must have worn down. How did he wear
down because he was going out at night. Did he
(29:25):
wear down because he was playing too many games going
for the m v P Award in the regular season,
or did he wear down because he was just mentally
physically exhausted and he shut down after losing Game five.
I don't know, but uh, whether it's Lebron James taking
care of his body, whether it's his own internal motor
that can push through fatigue more so than hardened like
(29:47):
when that's when you have to dig deep. The expression
in basketball I've always been told is you can be tired,
but you can't play tired. James Harden played tired and
now we have the whole off season to rest. Big deal,
little deal or no deal that the Celtics should have
had an extra second put back on the clock during
their final possession and Friday's Game six loss in d
(30:08):
C one to the Wizards. What it is a big deal,
little deal or no deal? I'll say little deal. Um,
it would seem like a bigger deal because it seemed
like Brad Stevens was Brad Stevens was was scoring on
every inbounce playing. If you've given him a second more,
(30:29):
they could run a much more intricate play to win
only needed to to win. Uh, you know it's you know,
and it's a bigger deal in that Let's go from
little to big deal. A second is a lifetime, especially
in the NBA, especially when you got Brad Stevens and
they didn't get a great look. But I would think
that if you gave him another second they would have.
(30:50):
It was interesting, you know they threw it inside to
the post knowing they were gonna get fouled. I don't
know why they didn't just do that again, throw it
into Kelly Olynnock, but they chose not to big deal,
little deal or no deal that. Nick's president, Phil Jackson
is reportedly destroying Carmelo Anthony in trade talks, calling him
a quote losing player end quote. According to The New
York Post, he is a losing player little deal. I mean,
(31:14):
they don't like each other. He doesn't believe you can
win big with him. I think most people kind of agree. Um,
you could say, well, you're hurting Carmelo Anthony's value like
Karmala Anthony hurt Karmala Anthony's value. So I don't and
it's the New York Post. They hate Phil Jackson. Look,
I I just I don't think you're gonna fool the
(31:35):
rest of the g ms in the league and said, no, no,
he's really a winning player, Then why are you trading him? Well,
he's just not our winning player. Hello, he Phil Jackson
is doing the instead of doing the it's not you,
it's me, they're doing No, No, it's you, it's him. Yeah,
it's him. A final one for you, A big deal,
A little deal or no deal that. Alex Rodriguez went
(31:55):
out for dinner in New York City with girlfriend Jennifer
Lopez instead of going to Derek Jeter Knight at Yankee
Stadium last night. Ah, he didn't do a tape message
through Fox congratulating Jeter on getting his number two retired,
but was not at Yankee Stadium for the pregame ceremonies.
(32:16):
That's a big deal. I mean, na, I mean, but
I'm gonna say little deal and I'll explain why. Act
we close up the sack that was Scott lead sack
was gonna join us at one o'clock. Look, I said
this on your radio show yesterday, Dan, and I don't
know if it sits well with Yankee fans, and I
(32:37):
don't care. The the image of Derek Jeter is pristine.
Let's be honest. If Derek Jeter wanted to welcome in
Alex Rodriguez, he could have allowed Alex Rodriguez to play
shortstop because Alex, at that point in their careers, was
a better shortstop. Alex Ardriguez is a better shortstop. He
did not. He never did the peewee release to Jackie
(32:58):
Robinson and never took the heat eat off of a
rod and put his arm around him like he didn't.
He was on some level threatened by a Rod. A
Rod made more money, a Rod set more records, and yes,
a Rod was a fraud and was a juicer. All
that said, he was his teammate, so and and the
look the Yankees though they have him. The part of
their separation agreement was to bring back Alex Rodriguez as
(33:23):
like a quasi coach and adviser for training camp. Like
this was a messy, messy, messy divorce that both sides
right now have chosen to take the high road. But
he didn't like them and they hated him. And Alex
Rodriguez was not well liked by Jeter or Jeter's regime.
He was, he was, He was bad news for all
of those dudes. And so I guess, at least here's
(33:47):
why I understand it. I guess at least it wasn't
Alex Rodriguez being fake and showing up to a guy's
ceremony who didn't like him, and he didn't. He didn't
like that. They're not doing a monument for Alex Rodriguez
out in Monune Park, not happening. So I'm okay with
a guy not being fake, But I do understand that
(34:07):
it looks bad, right he's the captain. You show up,
tip the cap and let him have his day. Has
Colin Kaepernick found a team? And if not, wait to
hear who may who may usurp him? That's next? Oh baby, baby,
(34:31):
but Doug got leap shows brought to you by True Car.
When you're ready to buy a newer used car, visit
True Card to enjoy more confident car buying experience. Go
to true car dot com. Our long national nightmare may
be over. No, this show is not gonna be canceled already. No, no, no, no,
(34:54):
Colin Kaepernick may have found his next team. Turns out
the entire NFL world is not racist, or at least
the Seahawks aren't. I'm kidding about the NFL world being racist. Right, Like,
My whole thing is like, do you want to be
a backup? Are you want to make backup money? And
can you find a system to which as a backup
(35:14):
you can fit into? Right? Like? A backup quarterback really
is only there for a couple of reasons. Usually it's
you're young, and so you have the basically two types
of backups. The super super young. We think he has
potential could maybe one day develop into a starter or
(35:37):
to the veteran who can fit into what we're already
doing and to help out the starter. Con Kaepernick is neither.
He's experienced, but he's a he's a niche. He's not
a niche market. He's a running quarterback who's not as
fast as he used to. He's a hard throwing quarterback
who doesn't throw it as hard as he used to,
(35:58):
and he struggles at times with accuracy. He's never been
great at manipulating the pocket to his left, and it's
not like he's a West Coast offense guy. So speaking
to seven ESPN in Seattle on Monday, Pete Carroll was
asked if the team looked to add add either big
(36:20):
name free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick or r G three
is potential backups. That's because their backup quarterback Trayvon Boykin
is one in experience and two was arrested in college
at the Aluma Bowl and then he got into trouble again.
Here in the off season, they got Jake Heaps and
Skyler Howard. Quote, we're looking at everybody, we really are.
(36:43):
We've been tracking everything that's going on, and we've got
cap and roster issues and stuff like that. We're trying
to manage properly, but quite frankly, yes, we're looking at
those guys. The Seahawks are still pondering as it stea
Hawks still pondering as a destination for Kaepernick this offseason,
as the quarterback gets the cold shoulder from the NFL
(37:04):
after struggling the past two seasons on the field and
his national anthem protests off of it. So look, I
don't know if he's going to Seattle. I know that
Pete Carroll's asked the question and he took the answer, Uh,
the easy answer like, yep, we're looking at everything, which
doesn't necessarily mean they want to sign him, but it
(37:25):
would actually make some sense. Yes, Ryan, would you agree?
I think that that's not the way you ask the question. Yes.
Do you think Pete Carroll is the type of head
coach that usually gets a pass from the media, Not
a lot of people are heavily critical of him. Uh,
I just kind of think we know who Pete Carroll is, right,
(37:45):
Like he's he's kind of happy, super energetic, doesn't really
say anything, you know, doesn't really tell you exactly what
he thinks. Why do you bring that up on him?
So do you think that if Colin Kaepernick were to
go to a team like the Seattle Seahawks with Pete
Carroll as their head coach, he will be sort of
that buffer for Kaepernick. I just think he'll be a
(38:08):
backup quarterback. And like, look, they already remember last year
they wanted to protest the some of the you know,
the socialised US, and so instead of taking a knee,
they decided to lock arms. But what Yeah, But what
I'm saying is like, do you think Pete Carroll is
the right type of head coach to handle what could
come with having Colin Kaepernick as your backup quarterback? I
(38:29):
do from this perspective, like he's handled, He's able to handle.
Russell Richard Sherman, you know, who says things that I
think are far more offensive to the coaching staff and
may may get him run out of tent. Dan Dan
Buyers a Seahawks fans also, I would say this, They're
a veteran team, so like if you were to put
him on a younger team, I think there would be
it would be difficult for the other players to handle.
(38:49):
I think that there are enough veterans on that team
where if they were asked questions about him that they
would be able to handle it. It's a weird team,
like Russell Wilson says, all kinds of has set all
kinds of crazy stuff. He's kind of gotten a pass
for right, like he had the magic water for a
while that cured him of concussions. You know, then he
did that. You know that God helped them beat the
God helped him beat the Green Bay Packers, which ruffles
(39:11):
and feathery Richard Sherman telling the offensive coordinator Darryl Bevil
what he can and can't run, and then they score
in a pass even though he said he shouldn't pass
the ball around. It's like a weird They're so outspoken
that it becomes white noise. But look, I just think
the big thing is the league has determined that he's
a backup and that he's a hard fit. And with
that heart fit, he's got some issues in terms of
(39:32):
corporate sponsors not wanting not wanting the protests. All right,
Frank Vogel, I promise you will join us. If not,
we'll never talk about the Orlando Magic again. That's next
in the Doug Gotlip Show Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports
Radio all the calls, we have found the man we've
been looking for. We continue to react to. Yesterday has
come from behind when by the Warriors over the Spurs,
(39:55):
did ja ja but Julia perform? Uh? Basketball? All? What
do you call it? No? No basketball? Um not murder?
What is it? The manslaught basketball? Manslaughter by running up
underneath Kawai Leonard while taking a jump shot. I did
(40:16):
actually kind of think my takeaway is a little bit different, Like,
let's just say it. I don't the Warriors aren't as
good as I thought they would be. They're just not.
I understand that when they're hitting shots like Steph went
crazy to start the third quarter, just three three threep,
he's got eighteen. It just it happened so fast. It
nearly happened at the end of the first half. Right,
(40:38):
they were down twenty something in the first half, and uh,
you know, they cut it in no time at all,
two single digits, it seemed like. And then a play
here and play there, and the Spurs showed some gumption
when the Spurs got their starters back in the game,
and frankly, Kawhi Leonard took over. Monto gy Noble was
(40:58):
the good Manu at thirty nine years old. But I
just my takeaway is a little bit different. I I've
been searching for the Warriors to okay, I believe it,
but they can't seem to get Clay Draymond and the
other two all playing well, and Clay Thompson struggled to
(41:19):
find the basket and when he doesn't get it enough,
he gets a little bit selfish. Draymond doesn't seem like
he was part of the plane yesterday. Stephen Kevin Durant
saved them in the second half, and Kawhi Leonard got hurt,
and then then of course you got tonight at Game seven.
A guy who's coached in Game seven's before in this
very round joins us now. Frank Vogel, head coach of
(41:39):
the Orlando Magic joints us on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Coach, how are you good? Man? Um? Okay,
let's let's go to yesterday in your just in your
basketball opinion, ja Ja Pashulia, do you think of him
as a dirty player? Uh? I do not. Was that
(42:02):
a dirty play? Was that a dirty play that he made?
Because look, you can there's a differentiation you can make
a dirty play, but not be a dirty player, right, um,
and you know then all of a sudden pop kind
of provided provided that kind of middle ground, Like it
doesn't really matter what his intent is. What are your
thoughts on kind of the extra long clothes out. We're
a big guy who you know, like you struggle to
(42:22):
close out, but it wasn't like get a running start.
He closes out a little bit too long and goes
underneath Kawhi Leonard. Yeah, I don't know about this. I mean,
this has been debated since the end of time, and uh,
you know, it's just one of those things that I
find it hard to believe that uh player would intensely
try to hurt hurt another player, and you know, to
(42:44):
do it in this way is really hard to do,
you know. So I tend to think that, you know,
it's a guy like Za just out there playing as
hard as he can and um and trying to trying
to get the best possible contest on the shot. That's
how I see how are the how we're I mean, like, look,
(43:04):
I think Kauai is great, but to be able to
have that lead even without Tony Parker, with your basketball
mind being so much stronger. How were they able to
to slow down the Warrior's offense? What were they doing
that that was working for them, especially the defensive end. Well,
(43:24):
I didn't see the whole game. Um, I just noticed
San Antonio is the best defensive raided team in the
in the NBA and obviously coach Pop is one of
the best best ever at uh preparing for an opponent.
So they were very locked in. They played extremely hard
and make everything difficult for you, and you know, to
see them slow any offense down is not really surprised
(43:46):
to me. Frank Vogo joining US head coach in Orlando
Magic getting ready for the NBA Draft lottery, which is
tomorrow night. What's your what's your good luck plan? Like,
did you do you have do you have a rabbit's foot?
Do you have something you're gonna do? Like, you know,
you're not you're not a drafty expert, but at some
point it does come down a little bit of luck.
What is what is your plan for good luck tomorrow night? Well,
(44:06):
I'm not bringing the lucky rabbits for anything like that.
I like to think my plan was, you know, for
to create positive karma by uh not thanking and trying
to win as many games as we possible possibly could
down the stretch when we were eliminated already and uh
not resting guys and and those types of things. You know,
you uh, you uh played through the basketball guys, and
(44:29):
hopefully you get rewarded at some point. That's all I
have is store, all right. So when people say like,
you're twenty nine, You're like, yeah, we're twenty nine, but
we were trying to win those twenty nine Other people
were trying to lose more games like we really were this.
I know, I know it's your first year, but uh,
winning to the end. What what what was that like
(44:49):
for you? I mean you, you like you guys are
really close in Indiana to take over a team that
is very much in transition. Of course, the guy who
hired you, as you know, manager Rob Hennigan was was
relieved his duties. But for for you, a guy who
invests so much in every game, what's it like to
be a part of this transition process where you are
expected to lose more than you win? Well? We um,
(45:12):
you know, the expectation for me was to lose as
much as we did this year. Um, you know, it
was not to be part of a rebuild. It was
to come in and hit the ground running, and um,
certainly we fell short of that. So it was a
very very challenging year for me personally and for our
whole orgentation who was ready to get over this hump
and and in this rebuild and get our team back
(45:33):
into the playoffs. So it was a difficult year for us.
There's there's no question about it. And you know, we're
glad it's behind us, and we're looking forward to, uh
the new optimism that comes along with a high draft
pick and you know, whatever changes we need to make
going into next season. All Right, these two teams Tonight
Whiz and Celtics. You guys obviously have seen a ton
Whiz actually in your division, Celtics obviously in in your conference.
(45:56):
Give me your thoughts first on John Wall, Like we
all know he has this incredible uh end end speed,
like it's it's freaky end to end speed. And then
I don't know if you saw in Game six he
had a spin move, Like it's one thing to be
going that fast, but then to have the agility to
spin going that fast, What's like, what are the keys
to trying to slow John Wall down? So that he
(46:17):
doesn't get it going. Yeah, first of all, it's not
makes me really perform that spin move where he did
traveling and he did it. He came to a complete
jump stop and spin which was just watching the slow
motion was very remarkable. Um, what a series this has been. Huh.
I've watched this about every game of this series and
(46:39):
you know it's just, uh, you know, a fascinating series
to be COMPUTI the teams you need, how much they
don't like each other, and uh, you know, for it
to come down to the game seven is something that
I'm very eager uh to sit out on the couch
tonight and take a look at um John Wall. John
Wall is really become a hick of player, hasn't he.
You know, he uh struggle a bit for the first
(47:01):
couple of years being in them one overall pick. But
the guys thought out, figured it out. You know, we
knew the talent was always there, and you know he's
doing it in every way. You know, he's always at
the endia end to end steed, but he's really improved
his premier shooting and saw with the game winner the
other night, it does that on'm a defensive end and um,
(47:22):
you know, he makes them a very very disficult out.
So the Celtics got their handsful, I think. And then
you get the Celtics side coach where you have Isaiah Thomas,
who I think the second in the NBA and fourth
quarter scoring, um, and they've done it some to where
you know they'll run at they'll just double team and
get rid of the Why why not just double team
him every time he comes off a ball screen late
(47:45):
in the shock clock. Whyn't just just make somebody else
handle the basketball because he's so dynamic with it? Is
there is there spacing too great? I mean it just
seem again from from my my couch, you would seem
he's small, so he has to somehow pass around the
double team or dubble out of it, and he's really
the primary ball handler. Why not just get out of
his hands. Well, there's a lot of layers to that.
(48:06):
It's It's starts with the fact that usually a five
three point shooters on the court, others three point shooters
on the court who are all good playmatess and good players.
So you know, double teaming the BASKETBA near half courter
at the top of the key usually leads to an
open three or a layout. So that's that's where you
start in terms of why you don't double them right away. Um.
(48:29):
The other the other part of it is can you
contain him? Is he's gonna split your big is gonna
project the screen and take it away from it. Um,
you know, there's a lot of ways that he can
hurt you just by attacking the double team. You know,
he's so so little and so quick. So it's not
just an easy answer. You see that a lot with
analysts saying, well, just get get it out of his hands.
(48:49):
And it's not always as easy as it sounds. Um,
but certainly if you don't do it, and he's gonna
burn you, and he's he's proving that throughout these playoffs
and throughout the season as well. So, um, there's a
reason there's a one season they've had an extremely successful season,
and it's just not a not an easy proposition for
(49:09):
an opposing coach. You know, you guys switched kind of
midstream in Indiana where you guys tried to go to
small ball. You know, when Paul George came back off injury,
you played him at power forward. You tried to kind
of adjust to the league. And you watch these two teams.
I mean, heck, when they throw Jay Crowd out there,
I mean what he's like six like a six five
power forward, right, and sometimes they'll have Isaiah and Avery
(49:31):
Bradley and uh and Marcus Smarter Rogierra. I mean they
have a tiny, tiny lineup. Um, is I know this
is the way the league is going by your estimation?
Will it end ever trend back the other way? Will
we ever see uh more use of big guys, of
the ball being thrown inside or is this not just
the present but the future and it will remain that way? Well?
(49:54):
I think to see, uh, certain teams trend that way.
You know, to me, it revolves around um leaves talent
at the big positions. You know, if you're having an
all star level center, then you're gonna play through him,
and that's gonna be what the game looks like. He's
gonna have that style player, have an all star level
power forward, the same thing. But the non all star
(50:16):
level guys are you know, being stretched out a little
bit by by this small ball era and speed is
eating size uh pretty much university leaguewide, and um, you know,
I think you're gonna see obviously the greater part of
the league going with this trip. Last thing, you compete
against Lebron in the playoffs before, you know, you guys
(50:36):
have pushed them, and he he found he just found
a way to stick the dagger and he has he's
found a way to stick in the dagger in in
the Celtics before. But I kind of feel like since
last year's finals run, there's a different air about him.
He always seemed to he didn't lose his confidence as
much against you guys in shooting as he did sometimes
against the Spurs or another situation, but sometimes he would.
(50:59):
This year it's seems different. Is that is that? Is
that like a confirmation? But I see him make shots
and I believe that, or having coached against him and
having watched this league, you believe it to be true
that winning a championship in Cleveland, he's different. He's more
confident even in the week parts of his game than
he has been in the past. Yeah, he definitely has
a different look about him. As great as he has
(51:22):
always been, I really believe, you know, once in the
first amounts of the planoffs, if this is the best
I've ever seen him, and you know that's not a
it's not good thing for the rest of the league. Um,
he just has a look about him, a confidence about
him that you know he's not going to be denied
and he knows he could gets the job done. I
(51:43):
think the fact that they won the championship last year
in Cleveland, um, you know, really kind of took a
monkey off their back collectively as a team at the city.
And you know it's something that I think he's benefiting
them this year. Well, listen, Frank, we know you got
the draft lottery, and if there's ever a year to
(52:03):
be in the draft like this seems like a good one.
Like nobody wants to win twenty nine games, but this
is a year to which there's probably a guy or
two that could really help jump start your franchise, get
people to buy more season tickets, and of course get
this thing turned around in the right way. We wish
you nothing but success and can't wait to see what
takes place tomorrow night and what that does for you
(52:23):
in the upcoming NBA draft. All I appreciate Frank Bogel,
that's the head coach of the Orlando Magic. Now we
can talk Aboutlanta Magic basketball. If he had he not
joined us when to happen, Like, look, they're one. They're
a team that got caught in the Remember they had
Roy Hibbert and they had um uh uh. Now, well
(52:46):
Georgia was a point guard. But no, they had what's
the man's day the power forward now for the Golden
State Warriors, that comes off the bench if David West right.
So they had like David West at the top of
the key and Roy Hibbert down low and like David
West come out. You know you they they had George
Hill off a ball screen or whatever, and and David
(53:07):
West be at the top of the key and you
can make that eighteen nineteen footer. You know, it seemed
like seventy of the time, and you had Roy Hibbert inside.
And then Hibbert stumbled, the league changed, Paul George got hurt,
David West left and it was the house of cards.
But for a good portion of time they were the
(53:30):
next best team in the East. Now, of course you're
trying to do the same thing in Orlando and they
change course mid season trading Serge Ibaka. We'll take it
to San Antonio and find out when we'll see Kawaii
Leonard back on the floor, take it to Boston, find
out how they intend to slow down and maybe stop
(53:52):
John Wall and we'll take it to New York where
the Yankees recognized the Captain. That's coming up next, Broadcasting

have a black book. Now you just have it all
on your phone. There used to be guys that have
that black book. Was that chick's name and into it
the bar right a name rhymed with female body part?
(54:55):
What was it? Dolores Delorius? Yes, uh anyway, we we
we we we go to our our phone book and

what about Kauai? When when is he most likely to
be back Game three? I think he's absolutely out tomorrow.
He'll be back maybe Saturday. And I was upset that
there were three days off when the series first got announced,
(55:57):
but now it's actually may may actually save them if
he can come back and be which, man, it's pretty bad.
If he's not going to go tomorrow nine. I think
he's basically already been ruled up for tomorrow. Um. What's
crazy is like they were doing all this without Tony.
I look, I know Tony Parker was playing the few
fewest minutes since his rookie year. But still a series
of this magnitude of the series of the Rockets magnitude.
(56:19):
What what? What has gotten into this team that they
were playing so well even without Tony Parker and being
slightly outmatched against the Warriors anyway, Well, Houston completely went
flat in the front like a Kendall last week, which
didn't help, which was totally helped them. The Spurs man
Patty Mills as just an overachiever. That's his that's his career.
I mean he's a he's not even a he's a
(56:41):
He's a shooting guard who's short, and so he's plays
point the best he can. And they've got a great system.
I mean they just plugged dudes in and out, as
you know, and they got a little something from this kid,
de Jon T Murray. I like his body language. He's
not he's not scared. He goes up there and he
plays hard. And so they've they've overachieved. Man. I I
thought they were going to lose to Houston last week,
(57:01):
and I was absolutely wrong. It's just it's that system,
it's that coach and LaMarcus Aldrids was great in a
couple of games last week's surprising hinily enough. But yesterday
I think and they had a huge reality check. They
can't beat these people. These are different people they're playing. Now,
you're gonna take Kawai out of the mix. They've got
no shot. I would I tend to agree with you.
Mike Taylor hosts his own show on A M seven
(57:22):
sixty in San Antonio. Fall on Twitter at Mike Taylor Show.
Thanks so much, Mike, I got a guy. Got a
guy in Boston. Dan Shaughnessy, long time and talented sports
columnists for the Boston Globe. Uh, Dan, how how big
is tonight's game? Like there's been a lot bigger, more
monumental Celtics game, But considering where this franchise is in
(57:44):
this gross, gross growth phase, I'm sure they still want
a shot at the Cavs, a shot to get to
the finals. How big do you think tonight's game is? Well,
I think it kind of defines the you know, success
or failure of this season. That they were the top
seed in the camp Prints, and we know everybody knows
Cleveland's better. But now you're the top seed, you expect
to win two rounds and get to the conference finals.
(58:05):
And now that's where they are. Plus they had a
three to lead and the game six debacles. You know
that you don't want that to be the last memory
that they can make all that goal away if they
win tonight. But as is, you know, they dressed in black,
they overshot there, they were immature, and then you know,
with a five point lead and the ball with a
minute twenty in the ball in the hands of their
best player, they couldn't. They couldn't pull it out. So
(58:28):
that's the stuff they need to write ship on that tonight,
get to the conference finals, attract free agents, and feel
good about themselves. Um Dan Isaiah Thomas continues to uh
to be incredible down the stretch. Avery Bradley was great
going back to was a game five by your estimation?
Who's the X factor in tonight's game, Well, I mean,
(58:49):
you know, you expect we all to be the best
player on the floor, which he has been, he said.
Some slow starts, Thomas said, the fifty three point game
and then the last four since and he's average under twenty,
which is low for him. Those are the two. As
you look at there could be some sleep. I mean
Otto Porter didn score a point in the last game.
What's up with that? Sou Boston has a little bit
better bench than than Washington. Their bench isn't that good.
(59:10):
But you know, they've had a lot of days off
in this series and everybody should be arrested, so there'd
probably be some outlier, but but you always look at
the big games going in. I kind of tend to
agree with you. I'm not the only one who sees
it like Brad Stevens uh and his ability to diagram
a play out of a time out, some of the
some of the mismatches he's able to do to create.
(59:31):
I remember there was and I don't know how much
of his real and how much of his sports radio
there's a little bit of shade thrown his way after
they were down two oh to the to the Chicago
Bulls in the series. What's the general feeling feeling from
the Boston sports fan in regards to what they have
as a head coach. Well, people are happy with him.
I mean, he's you know, he's now one a playoff
series that was kind of hanging over when they went
(59:53):
down to the Chicago. There was you know, there was
some noise about well he's he's ten too, and ten
in the playoffs and what's up with this? And and
make the next step. Well, that made the next step
by winning a series. Now if they get to the
conference minal, of course, it's great. So I think, you know,
as you say, the stuff out of the timeouts is
really good with them. And uh Olenak had his hands
on the ball on a on a in bounce from
(01:00:14):
mid court with two seconds left Friday night. That's pretty
good play. Ye Yeah, of course they had a foul
to give and so he didn't wasn't able to get
a shot up. Dan Shaughnessy, sports columnist Boston Globe, and
a really good one fall on Twitter at Dan Underscore.
Shaughnessy doesn't live on Twitter like some of the rest
of us, but when he does, it's good stuff. Thanks
so much, Dan, Take care. I gotta gay. Mike mccarlo
joins a sportswriter New York Post. Check out his article
(01:00:36):
Derek Jeter always knew his audience. What's your sense of
how Derek Jeter Knight went. I don't know one pretty
know perfect, Doug. I mean, it's uh, it really kind
of reflected, you know, much of his career in terms
of being somewhat understated and yet still being in the
focus of attention but not over the top. And I
thought that, you know, that's where his intention was. Up
(01:00:58):
to the Yankees intentions, they pulled it off. Um where
you know, look, there's no more single digit numbers retired.
Maybe they could double up Joe Torre since he wasn't
a player. But and and we're look, we're prone to
the modern era and then of course to Babe Ruth.
But where does where is he seen by people who
know Yankees history? Um? Where is he seen in terms
(01:01:19):
of the all time great Yankees rankings? Well? I think
the top five is probably closed. I mean, because he
had some of the greatest names of all time and
Ruth and Garrick and Mantel, the Magic and Barrett. But
I think he's probably somewhere between six and ten. I
think that most modern Yankees fans probably putting Mariano higher
than him, um rightly or wrongly. But I do think
that certainly of the modern Yankees, he's the guy that
(01:01:41):
the Yankee fans associate most with them with that success,
and so therefore they tend to rank him higher, probably
six or seven. Judge hit another home run when he's
got fourteen already on the year. I mean, the guy
is just an absolute monsters. They gotta split in the
double header with the Houston Astros yesterday. My senses they
wait until the trade deadline and add some pitching to
(01:02:03):
this to this young, star studded lineup. Is that Is
that an accurate guess as to what they choose to do. Yeah,
I think that's what they want to do, because, look,
I think the Yankees believe they're good. I think the
front office believes they're good. But they have such a
surplus now of young talent the minor leagues, which is
something they haven't had in twenty years, you know, the
last time they both a champion. I think they want
(01:02:24):
to make sure that if they're going to have to
part with one of those players, they have a legitimate
chance to win the championship and they're not just going
to be you know, wild card contenders because they know
they have a pretty great route ahead of them in
terms of being able to fill in with with with
with young players. They don't even want to part with them,
and they don't think they could be able to go
for a championship seriously this year. All right, last thing, um,
(01:02:46):
I don't know how much blame you put on Joe
Madden and the Cubs. But all this Chapman has inflammation
on his rotator cuff. This is a guy that they
trade away and brought back in order to be their
star closer and uh, now all of a sudden he's
out at least a month. How How troubling is this
for the Yankees that Chapman. Uh it's one thing to have, Uh,
(01:03:08):
any sort of you know, leg problems hit problem, you
start having rotator cuff problems and now we've got a
huge issue. How troubling is this to the Yankees? Yeah,
it's gonna be troubling for sure, because for one thing,
the one thing that the Yankees that we thought was
was pretty safe was the back end of bullpen between
him and Betances. And you know, you moved the Tances
down in the closure role and he's struggled in that
role before. Plus you're taking guy who throws a hundred
(01:03:29):
and two sometimes out of the mix. So yeah, it's
gonna be troubling. Plus there one year into a multi
year contractor him. So the last thing the world the
Yankees want to think about is having to deal with
these issues every year, great stuff. Mike Mike Ficaro, sports

you a guy, all right. That's Mike mccaro from the
New York Post, as well as the rest of our guys,
Dan Shawnessey and Mike Taylor. Thought you'd like us taking
you around the country. Speaking of reporters, analysts commentators, one
called out our boy calling cowherd after the Whiz took
(01:04:13):
down the Celtics in Game six. Should he have find
out after we find out what's trending when things come
out of left field, having a game plan matters. Farmers
Insurance has over eighty nine years of experience helping people
play through every stage of the game. We've seen almost everything,
so we knew how to cover almost anything. Visit Farmers
dot com. We are Farmers So. One of the things
(01:04:41):
I I despised about my own business is that sometimes
guys um Sometimes guys I feel like they become part
of the stories or players to which they they cover. Right. Um,
I think the perfect sample of it, frankly was Brian Williams.
(01:05:05):
Remember when Brian Williams, what what do you say? He did?
He conflated the stories. That was what he said. Yes, Ryan,
go ahead, No, I was just gonna confirm with what
you were saying. You're well, it's one of those things
where I put my hamnuts him in and then you
said what I was going to say, but we'll keep
it rolling here. Yeah, okay, so uh he he said,
(01:05:27):
he conflated the story. It was great. I mean it
was one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard,
like where he talked about being in combat or he
misremembered a story about a helicopter being shot down in
two thousand three during invasion invasion in Iraq, right like
he was like, I was I was there, Like he
(01:05:49):
wasn't there, you know, like you had been in Iraq
and you had been in a helicopter. But that's kind
of where it ends. Well No, Well what I said
was like, no, dude, you lied, You've made it up.
You wanted to be first person and it wasn't. I mean,
it's just just bizarre. He had said that the helicopter
(01:06:14):
he was riding in during his coverage of the Iraq
invasion was forced down by fire from a rocket propelled grenades.
In reality, members of the media were there, so that
Williams was talking about a chinook that was an hour
ahead of his location, like, na, it didn't happen to
you at all. It didn't happen to you at all.
And that's like you roll up on a car accident.
(01:06:35):
You're like, yeah, that totally happened to me, But no,
it didn't. Well he could have, you know, so I
I used that too. Um. I understand that we like
the teams that we cover. I get that that we
like the players that we come and I will listen
(01:06:57):
that the thing we do a bad job in my
profession of and my profession of media guy. I also
hate when media guy rips the media and then calls
the media the media. We're like, hey, dude, you're part
of the media. I did I did that part that one.
I don't you know what the media always does, like,
you know, you're kind of in the media. No, the
other media, So I'll take ownership of it. I don't.
(01:07:21):
I try not to do this myself, Like I have
friends that are in sports, But I I try and
cut out the relationship with my friends. Stink, they stink.
All my friends do well, they do well, treat everybody
the same, whatever. But I also don't understand, like when
you're like a beat reporter, you have a tency to
know like these are usually pretty good guys. Most professional
athletes are honestly pretty mature, solid dudes. Some are married,
(01:07:46):
some are single. And I think the percentages of like
married guy that cheats on his wife is the same
a married guy that cheats on his wife in real life.
It just is. You know, there are some guys that
are happy, very happily married, some eyes that are monogamous
while being single. Even though a professional athlete, you may
not feel that way because you just wonder how you
(01:08:07):
would be if you had the chance to have all
that action thrown your way. But I think the percentages
are honestly roughly the same. The only difference is the
company they keep and how much it costs to go
to the restaurants they go to. Right, that's we want
them to be like us, and yet we want them
to spend a lot more money than us. So uh,
(01:08:28):
Collins said, going back to last week that John Wall
basically didn't really resonate right, Like nobody around the NBA
as far as a fan like fans weren't super into
John Wall. He's not one of the top five most
(01:08:48):
popular players, even though he's probably one of the top
five most talented players. Starknably the second best player in
the Eastern Conference. Yet did you know that? Like do
you even if you is your eyes? Here's here's just
an easy do you know what number John wallwars? Do
you know what kind of sneaker? John wallwars? Like? What
(01:09:11):
do you know about John waller than like he plays
for the Wizards, and he's super fast, and he's pretty good.
And he played in Kentucky and he did the Doug
you when he first got introduced. So what happens is
that because he said, because Colins said, like, look, even
in d C, Bryce Harper is more popular, the Redskins
are more popular. Ovie is more popular, and and he
(01:09:33):
said John Wall is great, but like people don't care
nearly as much. He's not causing the league to change,
He's not causing people to pay attention nearly as much
as his talents probably should. So here's what happened. There's
a guy named Chris Miller who's a reporter force Comcast
(01:09:56):
sports Net mid Atlantic. The Wizards beat reporter Comcast Push
that owns the Wizards local rights they broadcast their local games.
Here's what he had to say after the game after
John Wall hits the game winner and played great in
the second half in there come from behind win against
the Celtics. Here's the one reason why I think Colin
(01:10:17):
Cowherd has missed it since day one. Go ask his
teammates what John Wall is all about. Why don't you
go ask those kids in Southeast DC and a John
Wall has put hundreds of thousands of dollars into supporting
their schools so they can get a better education, Go
ask them about John Wall. And maybe more importantly, go
(01:10:39):
ask the teammates that are no longer here that are
enjoying big time contracts because they played for somebody that
wasn't selfish and got their teammates involved. He gets players
paid because he cares and for Colin Cowherd since day one,
since John Wall did the duckie in his season opening
game one. To continue this narrative, it's stupid because you
(01:11:02):
don't have nothing else to say, and until you're in
that locker room and until you talked to Gen Wall
and the people around him, just say that narrative for
another day. Yeah, I don't know what narrative he's talking about.
When I've been around him, when I've listed on the radio,
he says, John Wall is great. You're still mad that
seven years ago he said that he shouldn't have done
the douggie when he first got introduced to which I
(01:11:24):
don't really like. I don't know, I never got introduced
an NBA game, But I do know that that Reggie
Miller in like his tenth year used to do with
Michael Jackson dance right, So like I like, it's an
NBA thing. It's different than any other sport he had introduced.
You can do a dance you do want, Like, nobody
really cares started an NBA game super boring, so at
least make the introductions exciting. So but I have this
(01:11:46):
rare ability, like I can disconnect from a bad rant
seven years ago and understand that it was just a
rant that I disagree with seven years ago, has nothing
to do with factual ray into our analysis of how
weird it is, how good John Wall is. Yet the
lack of national residents he has, or national respect he has,
(01:12:08):
or the inability to draw major sponsorship dollars, Like I
don't know why Paul George has a Gatorade ad which
he makes the game winner while drinking a Gatorade, even
though the irony too it was how many game winners
he missed just a couple of weeks ago, Like, I
don't know why that occurred. I mean, I think it's
because Paul George was a member of Team USA, because
(01:12:31):
he played in the West Eastern Conference finals, because he
does have his own shoe with Nike, Like I would think,
like those are some of the reasons why, But there
wasn't anything that Colin didn't say that. Frankly, we didn't say, like, look,
I know Scott Brooks enjoys coaching the Wizards, not just
because John wall is terrific and so is Brad Beale,
but because you don't want to be the only team
(01:12:52):
in the spotlight like they were in Oklahoma City. Like
the Redskins are bigger the Capitals who lose every year
in the playoffs. It's still kind of a thing until
they lose in the playoffs. And frankly, Bryce Harper is
a transcendent pro. Bryce Harper got over the weekend right.
He signed a instead of going to arbitration next year.
(01:13:13):
He's gonna make twenty six million dollars, twenty one million dollars,
twenty one million dollars, which sets the table for him
at some time next season to negotiate a three hundred
plus potentially four hundred plus million dollar contract. And I
know that it's not a free market. It's not what
(01:13:34):
baseball has that you can't get that in basketball. But
Harper is a bigger name. The Redskins are bigger. Ovie
is bigger. And instead of being a prisoner of the
moment and defending your guy and conflating the two stories
from year one to year seven and getting super emotional
about John Wall donating time and John Wall creating shots
(01:13:58):
for other people, instead go, you know what, hey, Calart
does have a good point. Why don't more people get
into this? Why are the stands so empty at the
start of Big Wizards games? Like it's traffic, there's traffic everywhere.
Why is it only DC that has such bad traffic
to which people can't fill up the arena? But what
(01:14:21):
happens is much like Brian Williams guys that cover stories
on a daily basior cover them in person, that get
super emotionally attached. Like I thought Chris Miller's rant was uncomfortable.
I thought he was. He was. It was like I
was talking about his brother, Like like John wall is
just a basketball player, You're just a reporter. Okay, it's
(01:14:46):
gonna be okay. John wall is making like twenty million
dollars a year, He's okay, don't take it that emotional personal.
He might not know nor care who calling Cowherd is,
but you apparently do. H. Clay Travis believes he could
(01:15:08):
coach one of these NBA teams and wait to hear
how successful he thinks he could be. Yeah, find out
what the Fox said. Next, leave with true Car. You
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, new or used?
Is it true Car? To enjoy a more confident car
buying experience, let's dns that gotta leave show Fox Sports Radio.
(01:15:41):
So I um so I picked him away from the
airport and UH had kind of a play a move. Uh,
let's let's do what the Fox said of coming top
of the r do you guys, I just want to
have it to have enough time? Do you gause or
do you want to clown Clay Travis? Right now? You
know what it is called the Ryan Music. I was
(01:16:03):
just gonna tell you guys how much of it I
was like patting myself in the back on how how
like I'm not great with the husband, Like I'm good
with the husband thing, but I'm not always great with
the husband thing. I was really good with the husband
thing last night. It's pretty proud of myself. How um,
So my wife landed at like a thirty, right, So
I made I cooked dinner from my mom for Mother's Day,
(01:16:25):
brought her some flowers. But I also got my wife
flowers and got my wife a little gift. And we're
staying in this week at a hotel. Well, she's house
hunting whatever, And so I had the flowers and a
gift and left them both on the bed for when
she would she would go into the room. And I
wasn't there. Right, I've never done that before. I was
really really proud of myself. Years later you figured it out,
(01:16:48):
like I do. Unless I've done you have to keep
doing like little things like a note here of flowers
Mother's Day. Yeah, all right, yeah. Um, how you've been
going out with your girl now? Six months? Seven months?
About eight months? Eight months? What is her mom like?
She's very nice? Yeah, she's Uh, she's always been a
(01:17:10):
stay at home mom. So she does like you know,
the housework, carden and stuff. Hot. Yeah, bad question, it's
what or does she like? Because you have to go
like is this gonna is? How is how is this wine?
Gon age? Right? Big question? How is this wine in age?
(01:17:31):
The wine looks like a kid age? Very nice? Oh
you got the hots for you for your potential mother
in law. That's uncomfortable, Ramas. Uh, what did you? What
did you? What did you do for your wife? Right?
I actually got her something that hasn't come yet in
the in the mail. It didn't make it. It didn't
make it in time for the old Mother's Day. It
(01:17:52):
didn't make it in time. But I got you something
it's definitely coming in. Got her a card and in
the card it's saying something's coming for you. When did
when did you order this? Be truthful? Uh? Like Wednesday.
They don't make things. They don't come like you can
get a tesla built from scratch in like four days.
(01:18:14):
How is that? Boss? Dan buyer. Do you believe that story? Well,
John actually mailed his Mother's Day card to his wife,
so he dropped in the mail on Saturday and there
were something from Amazon. It'll be there by the time
you get home. Yeah, it was just like hand was
like you don't like a shirt, but go up in
a mountain. It was the Russian dolls and e walks.
(01:18:36):
They were just different sizes. You might have ordered a
Russian bride and it would come in before. You have
to pay more right to get it there quicker if
it's just standard. I think it takes a couple more.
You did the standard thing. Yeah, yeah, you were happy
though with what you ordered? That I am She's gonna
be happy with it. Yes, I'm happy with it as well.
They coupons for hugs there. That's a good one. That
(01:18:59):
one one works. That one definitely works, all right. Find
out what Clay Travis said in regards to what he
thinks his potential would be had he coached one of
these teams. Plus um, I think Colin completely misses the
point on how important this Spurs series was is to
the Warriors and potentially is to the Cavaliers. All that
(01:19:22):
upcoming at the top of the hour will play a
little game called what did the Fox say next The
Dug Gotliep Show, Fox Sports Radio. What it's Dug Gotliep Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Mm hmmm, m m m m m
m m m m m Attrition attrition, all right. The
(01:19:45):
definition of attrition is do do do do? Do do do.
Attrition is the action or process of gradually reducing the
strength or effectiveness of someone or something through sustained attack
or pressure. Attrition, Right, it's the reason. It's the real
(01:20:06):
reason that uh you It's it's hard to know when
you buy a used car how it was used, right,
Like did you drive it hard? Or was it a granny?
It's like one of the reasons that you you want
to buy from a person like, well, it's only been
owned by a one owner. Okay, but who is that
(01:20:27):
one owner? Did he drive his car? Like you drive
a rental car? Right, you know you're gonna rental car?
You're like, I always, dude, that was the car. It
shakes about one um. But attrition, like the the idea is, hey,
if you just take it out for nice long drives
and then most everything else is run to the store
(01:20:48):
and back. That's different than you're driving it hard every day,
or you were driving it in snow in the winter. Attrition.
It's always been the argument for SEC East schools in
college football is hey, look, dude, we may not have
(01:21:09):
the best team, but it's hard to tell because every
week out we are we're going through a process of
gradually reducing our strength because the other teams have really,
really good players. It's why you you can't compare an
SEC East schedule or frankly, I think a Big twelve scale,
(01:21:30):
Like I don't think Big twelve got slaughtered because the
NFL drafted when many NFL draftees, right, But the fact
is that you have to play nine Big twelve teams.
So if you're not Oklahoma or when Texas not Oklahoma
or Texas or Oklahoma State, you're playing those teams week
after week after week after week. The more quality teams
(01:21:52):
you play, the mortal less in your strength, the more
likely you are to lose a game that you shouldn't lose,
Which brings us to the NBA Western Conference Finals and
what really happened yesterday and will happen in Game two.
Gregg Popovitch announced that Quiet Letters not gonna play in
game two, spranged his ankle when they're up twenty four
(01:22:14):
points in Game one, reaggravated an ankle injury that was
sustained against the Houston Rockets. And while I would conclude
that my belief is the Warriors were going to win
the series even though they might have lost that game,
I have less faith in the Warriors ability to beat
the Calves. On the other hand, it helps out the
(01:22:36):
Warriors and beat the Caves because I think the Spurs
have no shot without Kauai and now they have no shot,
but they have no shot of wearing down the Cleveland Cavaliers.
What happened last year with Steph Curry was not just
about the fact that he got he tweaked his knee
(01:22:56):
in the playoffs. What how been was the previous season
Steph Curry almost never played in the fourth quarter. You
remember that it was like eighteen four fourth quarters that
he never took the sweats off in in the regular season.
I didn't even even get in. They were so much
better than the other team last year. They were stupidly
going for seventy three wins. So he played in fourth quarters.
(01:23:20):
So it wore him down some. And then when he
was out early in the playoffs because the knee injury,
it wore the rest of the team down something. And
then the challenge of coming from three one back to
the Oklahoma City Thunder continued to wear them down something.
And then Draymond was suspended and Andrew Bogant got hurt
(01:23:41):
and they became depleted and the Cleveland Cavaliers had more
strength to finish at the finish line. Were the Calves
better than the Warriors? Maybe? Or was it Bogat was hurt?
They were a bit worn down from having to take
up for teammates that weren't they er the Warriors got
(01:24:02):
just enough moment like hey, and remember the Warriors didn't
win by like fifteen going away, like Lebron James had
to save the day because he blocked a layoup that
should have been a dunk from Andre Iguadala and Kyrie
Irving hit a three over a contested hand, right Like
That's literally the difference in the game. And so what's
(01:24:26):
missing in the discussion about what this all means is
that it I watched yesterday's game thinking way, I always
thought that the Warriors ceiling was higher than the Calves.
But boy Clay Thompson there's only one basketball, right, It's
(01:24:47):
like there's a basketball expression. It's like, hey, they only
play one ball, and I'm not big on you know that,
who's gonna take the last shot. On the other hand,
it's pretty obvious that Durant's the best player and Steph's
the second best player, and Clay Thompson is getting scraps
and it's really hard because as good as he is,
he feels a lot better about himself when he's shooting
(01:25:08):
and scoring, like he doesn't like the Harrison Barnes just
throw it to me one on wide open roll like
that ain't his thing. But I'm not sure it's gonna
matter because the Spurs won't be able to wear down
the Warriors or expose the Warriors like they could if
they had Kauai full strength for the entirety of this
playoff series. Alright, so let's play a little game. We
(01:25:30):
do this earlier in the show. First time listening to show,
It's Doug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio. Podcast is readily
available iTunes or wherever you download podcast. Don't forget to
rate us like us. We like that lift driver Lift
you can tip, right, Huber, you can tip You just
gotta do it off the app. That's so, you know,
(01:25:51):
you're a hell of a guy like Ramos is the
kind of guy that tips on Uber most definitely does.
He's most definitely an Uber tipper. You're not supposed to tip.
He's like, all right, I can tip. I can give
a guy, you know, So let's play a game called up.
What did the Fox say? I continue to believe we
(01:26:12):
have the best sports lineup in national sports radio history.
That doesn't mean that I can't take shots at the
takes of my colleagues, right, nor if they can take
shots at at my takes. Take a list to what
Colin Cowherd The Herd on Fox Sports Radio and the
I Heart app had to say about Kauai Leonard going
down and how it doesn't matter anyway. The better organization,
(01:26:35):
the more capable that organization is of weathering the loss
of a great employee. So Kawhi Leonard goes down yesterday,
and all I hear is well, I mean if it
was for Kauai. Now, actually we have actual data on this.
The Spurs are eight and one this year without Kauai.
I don't want to hear Greg Popovitch. Now, we can't
(01:26:57):
win with that, you are even one this year without Kauai.
I'll give you a pass. Yesterday it was destabilized, but
you have shown an ability to win games and get
here with all sorts of injuries. That sounds really good.
But if you lose your starting point guard and you
lose your best player, you're not being anybody in the
(01:27:18):
NBA playoffs. Like listen, if you're such a great organization,
you can there's five players on a basketball floor. You
lost two of your five best players, and you were
at a talent disparity to start even if you had
all five of your best players. To me, the story
of the day is the attrition or lack there of
(01:27:41):
attrition that I believe the Warriors will go through. And like, look,
it's no different than the Calves. The Calves were smartly
able to get through their first couple of series and
now they're gonna get a team that's worn down from
their seven game series. But I also think that the
Calves would probably most like to play the Celtics because
(01:28:02):
the Celtics play very similar style and yet there is
a complete and utter mismatch in terms of size. Like
I just I can't see the Celtics taking more than
a game from the Calves, whereas whereas the Wizards, I
could see him taking two games, and I could see
him think I could see him making it a little
bit more difficult. I could can see the a little
bit more of the gradual reducing of strength or effectiveness
(01:28:26):
through sustained attack or pressure. I really could we lost
the ability to have attrition on the worst, And maybe
that's for the best. You want full strength Warriors, full
strength Calves. You want both teams just get get it
done in four games and let's get it on for
seven games. Maybe that's what you want. But I think
attrition is has always been just like injuries. Attrition has
(01:28:49):
always been kind of the untold story of the playoffs.
Speaking of the Warriors, take a listen to what Clay
Travis had to say in regards to UH coaching in
the NBA and what he would do if he was
a coach. I am the average NBA fan. I represent
him right. If you put me on the sideline for
(01:29:11):
the coach coaching the games themselves, I think if I
had coached eighty two games on the sideline this year
for the Warriors, I think that I would have won
sixty four games. The players basically coach themselves. So many
NBA games, I would have the best talent in every game.
I would take direction from Steve Kerr, who's injured right now.
I think I could design plays in the context of
(01:29:33):
most of the NBA is just about philosophy. Yeah, that's
not even close to being true. That that's so far
from being true. It's not really funny. Now. Look, that
doesn't mean that you couldn't have assistant coaches that dropped
the plays. Some coaches have that. Uh. But I would
say the thing that there is more of in the
(01:29:55):
NBA than anybody will ever know. There's more defense in
the NBA, and there's more coaching in the NBA then
you could ever fathom. Because there's two to two and
a half as many possessions in an NBA game as
there's a college game. There's coaching on simply every possession,
between substitution pattern coaching out of a time out, coaching
(01:30:16):
in balanced plays, coaching to try and find a mismatch. Yeah,
there's actually a lot of coaching. They think it goes on.
That's actually the opposite of the truth. Just the idea of, hey,
I can drop some place because's more about philosophy, Like
let's get the ball to Kevin Durant. Let's everybody else
get out of the way, Like where do you want
me to stand? Just you kind of know where to stand? Yeah,
(01:30:38):
that's not a can they coach? Can they police themselves?
They can? But remember all of these players were star
players at some point in their lives. That's how they
got to the NBA. So until you have somebody who
make sure, you have to find a way to manage
the egos and to assign the roles without managing the
(01:31:02):
egos in the science that there's an art to it.
That's the philosophy he's talking about. I agree with that.
I understand that there's actually a lot of coaching that
takes place a US. Hello. I mean, look like Brady
Hope forever coached in college fool without a headset? What
exactly is is he a philosopher? What is what's going
on there? That's what the Fox said. Every day. We'll
(01:31:24):
try and play that for you a couple of really
good bites bits from our colleagues here at Fox Sports
Radio until they start crushing me, at which point we'll
get really defensive. Kidding, kidding, Chris Bruce arg is gonna
join us up coming. Next? Does Jaja have have a
reputation as a dirty player? I mean, like, isn't that
(01:31:48):
the kind of Andrew Bogut role that he filled and
he doing it perfectly? Does he believe that our secret
sound of Draymond Green to Jaja Pashulia was in fact
secret set? But more than anything, what now the Western
Conference playoffs? It feels like it went from being super
interesting too super over? Is it? Brussar joins us. Next?
(01:32:10):
What True Car? You can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking
for and on average sabe over three thousand off M
s r P. Were you looking for a new or
used car? Visit True Car to enjoy more confident car
buying experience. Doug All them show, Fox Sports Radio, Ramos,
(01:32:35):
did you get your wife? What I heard? You got
your wife? I did get her that, yes, but it
hasn't come yet. That's what I was telling you earlier.
I understand, But you've got your wife a fitbit. Isn't
I telling your wife she's bad? No, it's something she likes.
She likes to walk and do steps and so this
is I've opted. She she has like a lower version
of it now and now we've opted to a much
(01:32:57):
more two point Oh it looks like a four point
four four. Okay, so this won't be met with like
like my dad, once upon a time, my late father,
once God rest his soul, gave my mom a Jane
Fondo workout for Mother's Day, like, and it went over
(01:33:19):
about as well as you as it. You felt like
it went over what I said, right, So that's not
that she's she has a fit bit and you're like, honey,
here's a better fit. There is one that does more.
It's more interesting to look at, it's not so cheesy looking,
and I think she'll be happy for it. So now
she wears something that's cheesy. If you're digging the holy stuff,
(01:33:39):
hold Dan, Dan buyer, Uh, how would your new bride
react if you got her a fit pit? I did.
She asked for one, So yeah, yeah, so that's what
I was gonna say. I was gonna side with John
on this one. Like you can't jump to these conclusions.
If John bought her, like a triple X sweatshirt, that
is something else. But what if she actually wears triplets?
But the point is is I just aways by medium,
(01:34:01):
you know, there you go. That's the way it goes, honestly, Honestly,
I will tell you what I got my wife wonderful.
Let's hear this I got. I got my wife some sleepwear. Now,
when I say sleepwear, I did not get her sexy
lingerie Like she looks good in it, but it's not
sexy lingerette. My wife is like we she loved. First
of all, she really likes to sleep, like she's one
(01:34:21):
of these people. If she gets eight hours of sleep,
she's an amazing person. Like amazing person, she's like top
five people in the world. Anything less than eight hours,
she's not as great, okay, and even she would say
as much. And she loves, like I know exactly the
(01:34:42):
style of sleepwear. So I got her something very fairly expensive,
Like I went into the Pink place and like that
stuff is junk. But you know that they skew. That's
the demo. There is like fourteen to like twenty two,
right or some guys like, yeah, I went to Victoria's Secret.
I got you know, like this wasn't like like this
wasn't dirty old man stuff. Um. By the way, I'd
(01:35:06):
only go in there with another woman, because I don't
want to be thought of as like the creep who's
checking out the women's Oh I disagree there. I disagree
that because you go in there and you just you
go in there, and most of the women that help
your look they know you're looking for a another woman. Okay,
all right, well I mean unless you're like, would you
(01:35:26):
try this something right like that? John? John? Would you
walk in high I'm looking for a bra? Would you
would you feel comfortable? I walked in them before, and
I had said what Doug said, I've said, you know,
my wife, I'm buying something for my wife. What do
you recommend? No? Listen? And I had and like I
when I went to a I went I went to Norties, right,
because I went to a couple of different places, and
(01:35:49):
then I went to Norties and I walked in and
I was just like, hey, look here's what I'm looking for. Okay,
I'm not looking for like diamonds and pearls or whatever,
something silk and you know, but I also don't need
know a old lady gear like this is what about
she likes? And there was this a selection and then
the lady tried to like push a couple of things
and be like, no, this is what I want. And
(01:36:12):
my wife, I think she actually really did. Like I
know when she fakes like she likes it, and I
know when she not that she always likes that I'm saying,
I know when she fakes like she likes a gift,
and when she really likes a gift, I think she
really Like, yes, were you saying, Ran, what are the
child to look forward to? Ryan? They all these things?
What are the chances you bought her tom Brady pajamas anyone?
(01:36:34):
Tom Brady tom Brady pajama. Come on? I like what
he called it, old Lady gear, and I thought that
could be an actual brand, you know, like, yeah, that
would be awesome. I should we should make that my
My buddies. My buddies. When I was in high school,
they ted, remember he used to be have above the rim,
above the rim. They started a T shirt thing where
(01:36:54):
it was called btr Below the Rim. Like, I'm stunned.
That didn't that that net never made it. You didn't
know Tom Brady has pajamas, tom Brady sleepwear, No, he does.
Inspired by TP twelve. Tom Brady sleepwear a part of
his under armer line. I honestly did not. I know
he likes ugs and like, um we I've gotten her.
(01:37:19):
I've gotten her several pairs of us. What does the
sleepwear look like? How would you describe it? Like what
you would think like under armour relaxed fit clothing would
look like Yeah, I mean all that stuff is the
same innovative sleep where supposed to like what regenerate you
or whatever. Athlete he's sitting there. He's sitting there and
he's wearing like a Henley. And then the other is
(01:37:39):
there's athlete recovery, there's stuff for women. I didn't know that.
That's funny. It's really funny. He's wearing a fitbit. I
believe in the ad as well as I'm not kidding
did his Here's this is actually this is this actually happens.
So I know a friend and who their workplace had
(01:38:02):
a fitbit challenge and on the weekends they would put
their fitbit on their kid in order to win the fitch.
And I gotta tell you, like my kid, if I
ever had that at work, I would put it on
my son. We would kill it like he does. Like
you'll you'll look at the end of a Saturday of
like fifteen thousand steps. How are you? How are you
(01:38:22):
actually still standing? How have your legs not falling off?
Especially in the fall. He was doing football the more
than soccer than baseball. And then you get home, he like,
what are we gonna do next? Like we're gonna arrest
I'm tired from watching you. So the fitbit. So that's
what you got, buyer, that's what you got for your
right this time it was it was it was in
(01:38:43):
the last year. Could have been a birthday or something
like that. This is weird though, So you guys just
got married a week ago, so like how long are
you good for presents? Right? Like, but we just got married,
Like it went to her birthday for example November. It's
late November, so you'll be on the hook. But you'll
be on the hook then, yeah, but you would there
was there's nothing in the meeds like right now you
(01:39:05):
have a good little buffer, which like, look, we just
spent a bunch of the wed the first date anniversary
goes out now, so like we had a first date
anniversary which was in the middle of June, so that
kind of now with the wedding anniversary, I think that
kind of moves that one out of the way. Yeah,
it does, it does. Just don't forget the wedding. And
are you saving the cake? No, No, that's gone. Yeah, yeah,
(01:39:30):
saved it for about a day. She like walks into
the kitchen. You gotta like all of your face, Like
we were saving that for a year. It was so
yeah the egges. Uh, what is the best wedding gift
that you got so far? Like what is the best
(01:39:51):
one you think, like the most useful that you got?
We didn't register, so just like, hey, take a shot. Well,
I'll say, if you're invited to Dan's wedding, Dan and
Lisa's wedding, shouldn't you perhaps know them well enough to
know what they like? Yeah, but you don't want to
double up on gifts at the registries. You don't want
(01:40:11):
to double up on kids. Yeah, you don't want to
do that. Stake knives. You're nice, Yes, Like there's a
reason the whole registry, like the registry thing. There's some
cool parts of the Red Street, Like you go to Target,
Like people like why would you register a Target? Like
there's some cool stuff at Target and they give you
like a laser point you like, beep beep, beep, beep beep.
You put that thing on. It's pretty awesome. You get
all kinds of barbecue stuff. We were registered at golf Galaxy. Ye,
(01:40:39):
like Dick Sporting gets is so weird. Eighteen packs of
Big League Chew that's what hey, big League was awesome.
I got the Big League was awesome. I do with
my son and I we have Big League Chew every
time he was a baseball games. Like, dad, did you
bring the Big League Like? Yeah, I did, Yes, I
did get a big wad. Probably you can't understand the whord,
(01:41:01):
he says. It's amazing, absolutely amazing stuff. Um, I'll tell
so I got this is not a wedding gift, but
I wish I would have got it for a wedding gift.
My wife got me. I love my We love waffles.
And I heard you mentioned egos and I'm not here
to take shots todagoes. Egos are useful. Do you ever
want a second use for an ego? Put some toast them,
put ice cream in the middle of him, and make
(01:41:22):
an ego ice cream sandwich. It's really really good. But
homemade waffles are big time. And I don't know if
you guys know this I make when I'm at home,
I make homemade waffles every day, Like my kids are
addicted to my waffles. A waffle maker you use end
up using a waffle maker a lot more than like
a juicer. And I know a juicer is better for you,
(01:41:42):
but the juice in order to take it out and
clean it, it takes so long. You're like, oh, I
don't even I don't even like juice anymore. Whereas waffle maker,
it's awesome, big waffle maker. Did you get a waffle maker?
We actually have one already. How's your waffle making games?
Not too good? It's actually gave it to her. That's it.
So for a while back, one of our Christmas presents
(01:42:04):
is it do you guys go waffles over pancakes? I'm
a pancake guy. I have so two of my kids
like waffles, one likes pancakes. So and I'm supposed to
change up the batters, but he's the same bat It
is the same thing. I never knew there was a difference,
to be honest, I have a so I have one
of my daughter's allergic to eggs, uncooked eggs, so she
(01:42:26):
can have them in and and so my kids don't
eat none of the meat. Eggs. I eat eggs all
the time. I love it, and so I actually put
extra eggs in the waffles and in the pancakes. So
sometimes they have almost like a yellowish hue, just because
I know it's going to get them a little bit
more protein. And that's why I speaking. And I put
some creatine in there too, and other protein powders. Strong,
(01:42:46):
get them all strong, Little Diana ble Uh. Yeah, they
got hair in their back and zits and back meat.
But but you should see them. You should see them.
You know, they can all turn on a fastball like
it's nobody's business. Speaking of all this food. Did Eddie
Lacy make weight today? Because there was a lot on
the line for Eddie Lacy to make weight. We'll tell
(01:43:08):
you how much he weighed and he may have made
after we find out what's trending when things come out
of left field, having a game plan matters. Farmer's Insurance

Pop fits to play. What Pop said was Jajah said,
And I'll tell you why. They're probably both right. Uh.
That upcoming Doug Gotling show rolls on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's get you cut up and got a little bit
more depth on many of the stories you might have missed.
(01:43:50):
We call it the press, the press, Dan Buyer, five stories,
five minut it's you go. All right, Let's start out
with the NBA. How about this dog. The Cavaliers are
gonna wear the good Year logo on their jerseys next season,
as it was announced the tire company sign a multi
year deal with the team, part of the three year
(01:44:11):
experiment if you will in the NBA of advertisers appearing
on NBA jerseys, well, I look, it's just another way
to make money. I mean, it's a little good Year logo,
as long as it's not when I played overseas, and
when you play overseas, they actually get the naming rights
for a year to the team or for a couple
of years for the team. And I don't think any
of us want that in order. I think the NBA
(01:44:32):
will go there with that, but this is just you know,
I don't I'll be interested to see what do you
think any one person is going to buy a set
of tires because Goodyear put the logo on the calvs, Like,
I'd be really fascinated by it. Like I'd like to
think it's not like a personal sit Now. I'm sure
(01:44:53):
that good Year in addition to spending all that money,
they get a suite, they get front row seats, they
probably get to be the official tire, They clear the cavaliers,
maybe they get a picture with the guys, and I
don't know, maybe that sells the tires, but I'd be
fascinated to see, like if there's any is there any
way to track that any one person ever buys a
set up white walls because there was a good Year
(01:45:14):
logo on the cab. Very help. I do think the
updated jersey, you know, because you know soccer that's always
year after year. It could be slight modifications and maybe
if you have an old lebron jersey, it's not gonna
have that good Year logo on now. Next year, Uh,
the jerseys go to Nike as well, so they'll be new.
They'll all be all new jerseys along with all of
these logos. Doug, would you wear a jersey that had
(01:45:36):
the old Lady gear on it. Um. But yeah, by
the way, I just debuted that logo on Twitter. Um.
You can check it out at dan fire on far So. Yeah,
the O l G gear, Yeah, you can check it.
It was like print pants. I don't know. My my
wife is anti print pants. She thinks it makes you
look too old. How about this note from I see it?
I like it from straight up. O l G eight
(01:46:00):
Tom Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is gonna miss the
French Open because he wants to focus on the grass
and hard court seasons. Yeah, the French Open is like
one of those random people outside of uh of Rafa,
you know, something like random Spaniard always wins. Like random
Spaniards winning like it's not his Now he can he
can pick and choose what major he I got no
(01:46:20):
problem with this. I'm stunned at his level of success
lest late in his career. And so if you want
to manage and say like I don't want to do
the clay season, I just want to do the hardcourt season.
That's where I have my best chance to win more majors.
I actually think this is really smart. The Yankees pregame
ceremony where they retired. Derek Jeter's Number two was the
most watched program in New York last night. The S
(01:46:41):
network said the broadcast was the highest rated in the
city in each quarter hour from six thirty until seven thirty.
The ceremony was also the most watched non game on
the S networks since it began fifteen years ago. Uh
makes sense, makes sense? Like this is truly an end
of an era, right. My My take on Derek Jeter is,
(01:47:01):
and I said this on your radio show, I don't
think he's as good a shortstop as people will rate him.
I think part of it was he was in New York.
Part of it was he was on championship teams. But
I also don't think you can underestimate um the way
in which he handled being in New York. Like there's
a tweet I put out yesterday with all the different
women that he dated, and like, if the worst thing
(01:47:23):
you can say about Derek Jeter after dating was he
gave me a really nice gift, you know, gift bag.
Like that's the worst thing you could say about him,
and he's in New York dating all these famous like
ridiculous smoke show Bombshale tends and like the worst thing
they can say about him was, yeah, he hadn't a
driver take me home and gave me a gift bag.
(01:47:45):
Like that's not really bad. He was hand able to
handle all of this um with with a deft touch.
He he he at least presented himself with the type
of class that you ever have, especially in that white
Hots spotlight. He was just as good in the postseason
he was the regular season, and I will grant you
he got more opportunities in the postseason than anybody ever has,
(01:48:08):
and part of that's his leadership, but part of that
was he was along for the ride, so I he
it was a very special and unique career. He's not
the greatest shortstop of the greatest player ever, but he
was among the most clutched and poised and classy and
an era in which we don't trust anybody to not
have used p E. D s. He's the one guy
(01:48:29):
who we hope really didn't do them. Seahawks running back
Eddie Lacey weighed end today at two hundred and fifty
three pounds. That's good news for Lacey, as he earned
a fifty five thousand dollar bonus for weighing two hundred
and fifty five pounds or less. If he weighs in
next month under two hundred and fifty pounds, that could
trigger another bonus. Wow, he gets more money for losing
(01:48:50):
three more pounds. What do you think the chances are
that he was sitting in one of those wrestling rooms
in steam with with that with the sweat, you know,
the thing that made the bag to make you sweat,
you just like layer yourself in tinfoil. I think he'd
be lifting his toes off the scale. You ever try
that one to try to get a little bit less,
you know, not have your feet completely on it, which
doesn't work. Yeah, I think he, you know, pigs out
(01:49:12):
tonight and then uh, it's got the rest of the
time to figure out what he's gonna do to get
under two fifty. That's how I'd handle it. After blowing
three lead and Super Bowl fifty one Falcon, said coach
Dan Quinn, looking ahead the next season with the new
new motto, which is, and I'm quoting here, embrace the
suck end quote wrist bands with the model we're worn
(01:49:33):
this weekend by Quinn telling the Atlanta Journal Constitution that
it is a message to get over the Super Bowl loss,
and remember how hard it is to get to the
super Bowl. So we' a reminder there for the falcon
I would have done. You can't you you gotta you
gotta feel the pain. Feel the pain before you taste
the champagne. Feel the pain before you take some to
(01:49:54):
fit on a wrist band. Though, you know, right right,
you could use emoji's. This could have embrace embraces, embrace
the suck is bad. That one is not. That one
is not going to catch on. It's not gonna be
a trending hashtag. Maybe John should tell that to his
winless soccer team. Like um Quinn added to the Atlanta
(01:50:19):
Journal Constitution to quote, eat a crap sandwich with a smile.
This is going to be hard. Your choice. It's a
victim's mentality or a warrior mentality. So there's from dan Quinn.
How about this from the world of college football tax
returns made public today? This from The Indie Star from
show that Notre Dame is fulfilled its contractual obligation to
Charlie Weiss after the coach was fired in two thousand nine.
(01:50:42):
The final payment of two million dollars was given to Wis.
In all received nineteen million dollars from the school following
his dismissal in two thousand nine. Even better for Weiss,
he was still owed five and a half million dollars
from Kansas when he was let go by the Jayhawks.
One of the great heists in the history of all
(01:51:02):
sports was the fact that they almost beat usc and
he got a contract extension because there might have been
some NFL teams that were interested. I mean, one of
the and one of the all time guys that went
from incredible sort Notre Dame was his alma mater where
he couldn't make the team as a walk on too.
I mean, like, look, he'll never have to go home again,
(01:51:23):
but now he can never go home again. The fact
that that didn't work from where it started is a stunner. Finally,
undercover agents at Nashville, Tennessee, have busted a building that
was registered as a church but instead was a sex club.
According to the Associated Press, to inspectors were allowed to
enter the swingers club for forty bucks. Didn't know churches
had cover charges, um they witnessed inappropriate acts taking place
(01:51:45):
inside the facility. In March. What tipped off inspectors late
night church services on Fridays and Saturday nights. Was it
Vanilla's Sky? Is that what Vanilla Sky was about? I'm
not sure. John Ramos, is the movie that's a Tom
Cruise movie, right, Rachel Kidman, Yeah, there's a lot of sex.
Rachel was not as well known, but yeah it was.
(01:52:08):
There was there some swinger action that one, there was, yes. Yeah.
Also the church was called our Lady of piece of Meat,
which was interesting. Um, go to the one am service
early church services, get out there and pressed that the press.
All right, Gregg Popovich called Jaja dirty? What did ja
(01:52:31):
ja say? And more importantly, what do I have to
say about whether or not Jaa is a dirty player?
Next in The Dog Show, Doug got leaves Fox Sports Radio,
John Ramos trying to get our FCC license revoked. I'm
just trying to conduct the quality radio show. You're on
Fox Sports Radio. You missed any of today's show, including
(01:52:51):
Christopher Start. We missed christopers Start. Download the podcast just
simply go to iTunes. Do We almost missed Frank Vogel too,
but Vogel checked in with us. All right, there's a
lot to get to, but here's what I want to
leave you before we gets you ready for tonight's Wizards
h Boston Celtics game. The big story of the day
is Greg pop Fitch and what he said as his
(01:53:12):
presser today in regards to j Pashulia running underneath on
a close out underneath Kawai Leonard spreading his Kawai Leonard's ankle,
who I won't play in game two he had twenty
four point lead, and I don't think the Spurs are
gonna win the series. I do think they were probably
gonna win the game, and it would have helped the
attrition of the Wars would have extended the series to
(01:53:36):
at least five six, who knows, maybe even seven games,
And you get in the seventh game and you don't
know what the Spurs have been there before, no reason
to believe that they couldn't pull off an upset, even
though it would still be a prohibitive underdog. I thought
this was a clever line by Pop. If he would
have played and they had ended up winning, I go
get dinner, have a glass of wine, wake up the
next day, go to practice, and move on. But this
(01:53:58):
is crap because he's got this story. It can't just
be Oh, it was inadvertent he didn't. He didn't have intent.
Who gives a damn about what his intent was. Do
you ever hear a manslaughter? You still go to jail.
I think when you're texting and you end up killing somebody,
but you might not have intended to do that. All
I care is what I saw. All I care about
is what I What happened in the history of their
(01:54:19):
exacerbates the whole situation and makes me very very angry.
All Right, So there's a lot of people they They
had Bruce Bowe and he was Bruce Bone was not
a dirty player, Okay, boost Bone was. There's some similarities
there in terms of there's guys that aren't that gifted
athletically that the only reason they stay in the league
is just because they're tougher than your guys. They have
to play a little bit harder, and in Jaja's case,
(01:54:42):
he's a little bit clumsy. Look, I'm actually more bothered
by some of the illegal screens that Jajah said. But
you can make a dirty play and not be a
dirty player. And I think everybody in basketball knows you
don't run up underneath the dude and he did. Here's
ja out today. What am I head to do. Uh,
(01:55:02):
you know there was the right defense from my side.
Take the challenge of shot. I wish she had a
landing on my food. And honestly, I had no idea
that he landed him off until I turned back and
he was already on the ground, Like I didn't know,
Like I didn't even didn't. I don't feel pain. I
am judge. I don't feel pain. I feel bad for
(01:55:25):
especially when it's like wait, I didn't honestly last year,
I didn't think Draymond Green was dirty when he was
kicking dudes in the nuts. I think he's got to
stop that flailing stuff. But again, it's a lot. It's
it's much the same thing where you you can be
guilty of a crime of a dirty play with unintentionally
(01:55:48):
so especially when you run up underneath somebody in their
shooting that's protecting the shooter one oh one. But like
my takeaway is is slightly different than most of yours,
which is forget about that game. And even you know,
Monaging nobly said, man, this is like devastating you lose
(01:56:09):
the game. Basically he thought they should have won. But
it's more devastating, I think for Cleveland and helpful for
the Warriors because now they're not gonna skate through the Spurs,
but they're gonna skate through the Spurs. They're gonna win
Game two, They're gonna regain some of their confidence. Remember,
looks like Andrea Goodala has got a bad knee. He's
(01:56:30):
got to get right before they get to the NBA Finals.
I started the playoffs thinking that the Warriors were far
and away the best team. Not that they would win
four games to none, but they were they would be
better over seven games series. Now I'm not so sure,
but I also think that the Spurs are gonna be
unable to expose some of their weaknesses without Kawhi Leonard
(01:56:51):
in Game two, and who knows how healthy he'll be
heading forward. And then we have John Wall against Isaiah
Thomas Wizard Celtics Boston Garden, a place to which has
had such great energy for Isaiah Thomas in big games
in the past, But it feels like the Wizards had
figured out, let's make somebody else beat us. Ah. Do
(01:57:17):
I think it matters who wins? I don't in the
grand scheme of things, because neither team is good enough
to beat the Calves. But I think the Wizards provide
a far greater athletic challenge and the possibility of winning
two games, whereas I'm not sure those Celtics can win
more than one against the Calves. Again, the idea of
(01:57:37):
attrition more so than being good enough to actually beat
the next opponent. But so oftentimes we make we make
definitive statements based upon what level a team finishes at
and how they play their final game, or how they
play in a game six. Think of how we look
at James Harden. He could not have been better in
(01:57:59):
the regular season, and yet could not have been worse
at the end of game five. In Game six, and
now we're left with a bad taste in our mouth
simply because of how bad he was in that game.
That's the challenge for John Wall who's had an incredible year,
might be the second best player in the East. But
if you play poorly tonight, that's that's kind of our
Our last look at you, is how we feel about you.
