How was uh, how's practice been going. How's the off season?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, it's it's been good. The guys have had a
great attitude. They've challenge each other the best they can
do in shorts and and I just like, I like
the way they're rolling. We've got a lot of young
guys and they're they're playing their tails off.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
So it's been good.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
So I take it with h with Patrick rehabbing this
knee injury, Justin running with the ones right now with
the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, we split it, so Pat gets in and does
some of the uh seven on seven work and group
installed work, and then Justin takes more of the team stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
When you know, I was thinking about it today. You know,
like Manning missed that entire year the latter end of
his career with the neck. Brady had that ACL and
it was the first game ironically against the Chiefs before
you were there. So those guys had the entire season
to kind of sit back. Patrick he has this ACL injury,
but he plays most of the season. You know, It's
(02:23):
it's kind of unique. It's not like he just sat
all year and watched. He was part of this season.
So this offseason rehabbing, but he also got to, you know,
take ownership and everything that happened. I mean it's kind
of unique that more likely. I mean, all signs pointed
this going really well. Do you think that benefits him
that that last year, the struggles that he actually got
to partake in, and it's not like he had nothing
(02:45):
to do with it.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
I guess yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
No, I mean all that's good, and you know, we'll
just see how he does going forward here. We're not
guaranteeing anything with everybody's different than right now. He's doing
a good job and working his tail off and being
able to get out there and do that, but that's
different than when it's live. So we'll just see how
(03:08):
he does here over the next couple of months before
we get started.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
You know, justin Fields, I remember a couple of years
ago and Ryan Poles, you know, used to work for
you guys there, so you know him well. I remember
when he traded him. He was so impressed the way
Fields handled everything and the way he's really handled his
whole career these last couple of years in Pittsburgh and
New York. I know how much you guys value that
quarterback room. And the character stuff. Obviously, from a trade standpoint,
(03:33):
he's right up your alley, big arm can move, big kid.
But from a character standpoint, you making that move this offseason,
how much did that mean for you guys? From the
person as well as this player, this kind of guy
that you can work with.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, no, he's top notch.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Were a great kid, I mean, phenomenal kid, John, and
he's very very smart. He's just getting his feet wet
here within the offense. Every day he gets a little
bit better and more comfort for ball and like what
we see, but we'll just see where it goes. But
he he's been working with the ones and doing a
nice job and getting used to the receivers and whether
(04:11):
it's the tight ends or or the white outs, and
then what we're doing with the running back stuff.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
So but I sure like the way it goes about
his business.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
When you are are talking about making the trade. Obviously,
over the years you've played him, you've seen him on
cross tape, but really dive into him. How far do
you go back from an evaluation standpoint? Before you know,
you go of each let's let's do this. Well.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
I was lucky enough to have Matt Naggi here, so
Matt had him and drafted him and that one year
in Chicago, so I've got a little I had a
little feel on how he was made up and how
he went about his business and and then I've heard
nothing but good things from his other stays around the league.
So I was very comfortable doing it. And you know,
(04:56):
we just we just keep getting better every day. That's
that's the key, and and becoming more familiar with everything.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Well, you had another quarterback that you guys draft in
the seventh round. I actually worked with Nuss's dad at
Freso State. He was the offensive coordinator, so football family.
Nuss's dad was a left he could could play back
in the day, and you know, his season kind of
went awry. Obviously, he got injured, had that abdominal thing
that I guess came out in training camp. The evaluation
(05:26):
process there and how's he been coming along for you?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, so our scouts liked him and.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Each liked him, so I felt very comfortable with bringing
him in in particular where we got him, I mean
in the seventh round.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
I mean that's.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
You know, that's a great spot to pick somebody up,
and that's a good football player. But he's done nothing
but impressed people here, and he goes about his business.
He understands the game. He was raised in it and
his dad was a good player at Idaho there and
and so he's been around it his whole life and
(06:03):
he kind of gets gets it and you can see
that when he's out here playing.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Is it kind of weird looking back now that mahomes
You know, when you first got him, obviously you have Alex,
and then you bring in Chad Henney, who I'm pretty
sure had been in the league for a while, was married.
Now he's the veteran guy with with these younger guys,
it's you've kind of seen it all in your career
home when it comes.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
In, No, you know, we're not getting younger. So I
remember when you were a pup too, so I remember that. Yeah,
that's right. But he's listen, he's a great kid. It's
been fun to watch him grow. He's got a great wife.
He's got all these babies and that are that he's
he's loving on and growing them and so uh, they
(06:49):
they're very good parents.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
And he just goes about it the right way.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
And he's still the hardest worker in here. And he's
been here every day. I know that's been out there,
so he's been but that's what it is. I mean,
he's here every day and it's been seven he puts
in a whole work day, so it's a rehaving that
leg and he's done a good job with it.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Do you think a big part of your guys' success
has been the culture? You know, we hear that word
a lot, but obviously gets set by the players as
much as the coaches. His work ethic and obviously Travis
and the other guys you've had along the years, so
everyone else that comes in year in, year out. You
just had three guys draft in the top forty. That's
immediately what they see.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, now, sure helps.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
And it started really given credit where the whole thing starts.
When I first got here, we had a lot of
really good defensive players here, and those guys, all those
veteran guys came out to me and they go, you
just tell us what you want done, and we're going
to do it, and we'll make sure everybody else does it.
And so my hat goes off to those guys for
that attitude and then we're able to challenge him and
(07:59):
they hung with it, and that's that's where the culture
takes place. And those guys get the credit for that,
and then these other guys are just kind of followed
in line. And we've and Brett's done a nice job
as John Dorrissey did before, bringing guys in that are
good guys, that are team guys. And as long as
(08:19):
you have that, you're normally in pretty good shape.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Now, you guys don't draft high very often, but when
you do, obviously the homes thing you trade it up.
This year it felt like no one saw it coming.
You guys do a pretty good job of operating like
Seal Team six and then just pounceing on the guy
you want it? Is that a conscious effort to you
and Veach and the whole crew talk about just let's
let's keep quiet. He because didn't you you guys zoom
delaying what it was like forty eight hours right before
(08:44):
the draft.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, well you know how that thing goes man, Those
loose lips sink the ships. I mean, that's there's nothing.
There's nothing greater in this, especially amongst scouts, and there
are a.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Lot of people involved.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
So you tell one person is not sered, you know,
it's it spreads. It spreads fast in this league. So
I think Brett did a nice job of keeping keeping
it at bay and and uh, keeping it under wraps.
I thought, Listen, a great job on his part. That's
not an easy thing to do. And he had his
sight set on on this kid from the get go.
(09:19):
So and he actually got the.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
The deal done with Andrew a week or two beforehand,
and so it was just a.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Matter of him being there at that time and that
opportunity to go up and get him, and for those
two guys to be able to keep it quiet.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
I thought was great.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
When's the first time he brought him up to you?
Speaker 1 (09:43):
That was a while back.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I mean he said, this guy is the best corner
in the in the draft, and you know, we did
we did a couple things with our corners and lost
a couple of corners, whether it's to trade or or
free agency, and so we had we knew that was
an important position to replenish with, and so we had
(10:06):
our you know, Brett had his sight set on this kid.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
For a while.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
The emphasis on the defensive line. You know, you take Woods,
you take Thomas, Yeah, I mean you have two picks,
right twenty nine and forty. So you get to restock
the cover right there. Uh, tell me about those two guys,
how they've been looking at practice. Yeah, excitement to add
some big time talent up front.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Yeah, both Peter and ar Mason are.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
They're they're good athletes and and so we needed we
needed some charge in there, just guys that could could
move around a little bit and when needed, if they
need a pass rush that they can put pressure on
these quarter It's quarterbacks are too good in this league,
and so are the offensive linemen. So you've got to
you've got to have some athletic ability and if you
(10:55):
can get it in a in an inside technique, that's
that's a tough.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Thing to do, but it's also a great thing. We
were able to do that.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I think the other big off season move Kenneth Walker.
Is it safe to say the Chiefs plan on leading
the league in rushing this year?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yeah? I don't know about that. I mean, I'm glad,
I'm glad we have for sure.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Yeah, I mean that's you know, he wins the MVP.
Safe to say, that's a guy you know, coming when
he was coming out of Michigan State. You guys had
your eyes on you followed his career really pops this
year used to playing in big games. I mean, you
guys play every other week. It's you know, Thursday night,
Sunday night, Monday night. Right, So this is a guy
that's kind of used to the bright lights, the pressure,
(11:39):
big time division. Did you factor all that in besides
just the player of knowing the pressure that comes with
playing I mean, you guys are now like, you know,
the Midwest Cowboys in terms of your brand recognition.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Coach, Yeah, right, I would tell you I love the kid.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
I mean, he's a tremendous kid, and he goes one
hundred miles every map out here. He's something to watch.
And I'm not telling you we're going to leave the
league in rushing, but I know we've got a good
offensive line and he's a good running back. So and uh,
he'll come out of the season knowing that he's run
(12:15):
the ball a few times.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Is there a specific skill with him that that you
like and that you were intrigued by that you think
he has your offense?
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, I think he saw it.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
You know when the other running back there got got hurt,
that he could kind of do everything they were rotating
those guys and putting him in situations, certain situations, but
you got to see him do third nine, You got
some catch the football, got to see him in short
yardage and goal line, red zone. So you got that
whole package there, and he did it all and did
(12:45):
it well. So I thought that was important. We do
have Demarcato here, so we picked him up from Arizona,
drafted a kid out of the Brat.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
I like that guy de Barcado can play.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yeah, drafting kid out of out of Nebraska who we
think is pretty good. We've got Smitty coming back. It
was a rookie last year. So we've got a good,
good group of guys there that we feel pretty good about.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
You know, I was thinking, I remember, I don't know
if it was my first or second year with you.
We had a Thursday night game in Seattle, and in
early on those Thursday night games, we're kind of it's
like the Eagle shouldn't be going to Seattle. It's kind
of crazy. But the Thursday night package now has become
a kind of like Monday night football.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
The international games are, you know, obviously a polarizing topic
right now, was it? I think two years ago you
guys went to Brazil last year.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Yeah, last year, last year.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
So what was that fifteen plus hours in the air.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, it was a lot of hours. And you know,
we've traveled the world since we've been here. We've been
to Germany, We've been to London, we've been in Mexico,
been in Brazil. And our guys they love it having
an opportunity to go to these different places. And I
think Roger Cadell's doing a phenomenal job of making this
(14:04):
thing worldwide game.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
But from a coach's standpoint, a.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Player standpoint, the reality of it is a long way
to go for an hour football. But you know, you
do it and the fans love it, which once you
get there and you kind of get settled, it's it's
kind of a neat experience.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
The Brazil experience. You know, these guys are going to
Australia this year, which is a similar long flight. I'm
sure you start thinking about that thing how to work
training camp the end. But is that also a feel
thing during training camp of knowing you got to leave
way early. I mean it's pretty unknown, right, I Mean
that's one thing going to London. It's another thing, you know,
getting in a plane, because what's the London from Kansas City?
(14:43):
What's that seven eighty?
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yes, yeah, not too far.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
That's basically double in the air. You know, injured players,
maybe you're less likely to take a guy cushion or something.
I mean, it is a massive impact on you and
how you run the schedule, right.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
It is.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
But it's feasible travel. They they make it as easy
as possible. Give you a nice big plane that you
can stretch out on. Players, get all the first class
seats and.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
So you know it works out.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
But it is you get Nick and Bruce coming back,
that's that can be a long flight for you if
you get injured and so, but it's workable. It's workable,
and I understand what the league's doing. The league's going
to continue to grow and people like it and so
they like the sport. So you know, you do it,
(15:35):
and you put yourself in the right mindset, you can
tang there, do anything.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
But it can be challenging. Yeah for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Well, I know we got to wrap here. So I
do have to ask you the Miles Garrett trade. Where
were you when that thing went down? I set them
on your schedule here Coach twelve thirteen after you play
the Bills the previous week, so a nice little stretch there.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
I was actually watching the Rams because we play them,
and I was going and, man, we're gonna get after
these guys.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
They did that. No, I'm joking.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Now that Listen, birth wasn't bad either. I'm gonna just
tell you he's a pretty good player too. But they
went out and did a did a nice job of
picking uh, you know, picking him up. Garrett's a good
football player, and you know, they picked up McDuffie our corner,
and so they're they're putting a push on things. And
I was joking McVeigh at the owner meetings about it.
(16:27):
He's doing a heck of a job, and uh, they're
you know, they're they're putting putting it all in there
and and.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Going for it. So uh but.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Listen, he does a great job of coaching. GM does
a heck of a job bringing players in. Their owner
is top notch. He was our top donor when I
was coaching at the University of Missouri, so I have
known him for a little bit and he just does
a you know, he does a great job there too.
So they feel like they're close and so they're they're
(17:01):
doing these things and you know, good for them, as.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Your wedding invitation coming the mail.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Yet I can't talk about it.

No, you gotta stay quiet. You get it's like Mansar delaying,
you know, loose links, loose lips, shink ships.

You know what's pretty crazy is you know, it's pretty

well documented Patrick Mahomes and his ability to already get
on the field. Beach talked about this like two months
ago that he was hoping to be ready for training camp. Uh,
definitely week one. You can tell Andy's is definitely not
forcing that, and he's smart to do that, but he's
already repping in these practices. You got every time the
(20:10):
Colts post something on social media, it's Daniel Jones slinging
the rock, and you have Micah Parsons where the report
today towards ACL is that he's not going to be
back till the middle of October potentially, and he said
the goal is to be ready to go for the playoffs,
you know, to finish the season strong. But it does
(20:33):
show you how much easier it is on these guys'
bodies to play the quarterback position than all these other positions.
And it gets back to something Tom Brady said years ago.
He said, on a good high school team, the unique
part about my position, I could not start at any
other position. Couldn't play D line, couldn't play wide receiver,
(20:54):
couldn't play O line, couldn't play tight, couldn't do anything
else on a high school level. And I think it
quarterback right. Once they get the stability and their achilles
in their knee, they're not gonna be exactly what they
were one hundred percent pre injury off the bat, but
it is a much easier runway to come back for
these quarterbacks. I mean, Daniel Jones broke his leg and
(21:16):
towards achilles, like ready week one. Patrick Mahomes like, give
me reps into OTAs. I mean, you tore your ACL
with a couple of games to go in the season.
It's not like Patrick Mahomes I mentioned this to Andy Peyton.
Manning missed the entire season. Tom Brady tore his ACL
Week one. Remember Aaron Rodgers towards Achilles five or six
plays into the season. Was he was banging the drum,
(21:39):
drinking the dolphin blood or whatever if his team was
still alive to come back in December yet at defensive
line or pass rusher, outside linebacker, whatever you want to
consider Micah Parsons, you know, think about the difference in
terms of explosion, holding up blocks against double teams, empowering
(22:01):
guards as you're on stunts and twists. There's just so
much more required in terms of the force on that
body part than there is on the quarterbacks. You know,
it's pretty crazy now. And in fairness to the Packers
who trade multiple first round picks, they give a guy
almost one hundred and fifty million dollars or whatever, and
(22:23):
rightfully so, I think he got one hundred and forty
four guaranteed. I mean, it's the biggest contract they've ever
signed non quarterback by a country mile. You're definitely not
gonna force it. You know that the Colts don't have
a choice. And I think one thing Patrick Mahomes has proven.
Remember he dislocated his knee, missed a week and it
was like back. Remember the playoff game, He like shook
(22:43):
it off, missed a halfer, was back the next week.
He just has certain people. And this goes back to
Adrian Peterson, who's like an all time outlier freak. Is
some people just react faster. Hell I pull a back muscle.
Now I'm feeling it for a month. That's over forty.
You have a little tweak, I add something going on
on my shoulder. I'm like, I pray this isn't a
(23:05):
torn labram, you know, But I just keep powering through
it at the gym and just we'll see where the
cookie crumbles on that one. But some of these guys,
they come back really really fast. And again, I just
think it's a little bit easier on your extremities, especially
your like non throwing shoulder at the quarterback position than
(23:26):
it is all these other positions, especially offensive and defensive line,
where everything is not only explosive movements but holding up
against powerful other human beings. So I think the Micah
Parsons thing is less like an abundance of caution and
more just predicated on what he has to do at
his position. You know. The other thing I saw is
(23:49):
Maria Taylor. Remember Jimmy Butler when he had that thing
in Minnesota where he wanted more money, they wouldn't pay him.
And he showed up in like a training camp practice
and he got all the backups and he said scrimmage
against all the starters and he just dominated it. And
then he like walked out of practice, said f you
to everybody, pay me my money, and was on with
(24:11):
Rachel Nichols later that night. Just an incredible Jimmy Butler
moment during his career. Clearly Maria Taylor like she had
the insight on this one. And AJ Brown, she talked
to him on her podcast and he had mentioned something
to me that really resonated, cause I think a lot
of people are like you guys, you guys hate each other,
(24:32):
is just because you hate the offense. I've been told
it's been well reported, like people like AJ Brown and
Philly is like what's going on? And he was asking
about Jalen Hurts, who they used to be really close.
Part of the reason when the Eagles traded for him
picked seventeen. It's not like they gave up nothing. And
it was like, well, he's ben buddies with Jalen Hurts
(24:52):
for a long time, like they have a personal relationship.
And then aj said something that I think we can
all relate to. Grew apart. Now you can argue that's
the political answer. It's not like he's given us all
the tea on that one, but it's like, yeah, sometimes
people just grow apart. The amount of people listening to
this that have left a job because they didn't see
(25:16):
eyed eye with a superior, they didn't see eyed eye

him the contract a couple of years later after he
had dominated. So I think in their mind he was

like he was gonna be their number one wide receiver
for a long time. And then personalities happen, and let's
face it, people change, right. Look at Jalen Hurts came
into this league as a second round pick that people
like me that watch every Oklahoma game, like, I don't
see this. I thought it was a crazy trade. A
couple of years later, the good starting quarterback. Then he's

in a Super Bowl, playing as well or better than Mahomes.
Then a couple of years later with the Super Bowl,
It's like his resume speaks for itself. And it usually
gets down to in sports, who makes the most money.
It's typically why when coaches and star players are at odds,
who usually loses that argument the coach, because just look

at the finances. It's easier to fire the coach then
fire the player. And a lot of times you don't
want to fire the player. You want that player on
your team, and it's on your coach to figure it out.
But sometimes as personalities, as human beings, you're just not
gonna get along. And after a while, sometimes you go

not the person that I want to be around during adversity,

because let's face it, you can get along with basically
anyone when times are going well, especially for us in
the real you know, non pro sports, if you are
making money, you'd be like, listen, this guy's kind of

you want to keep your new players. But they haven't

like Manning missed that entire year the latter end of
his career with the neck. Brady had that ACL and
it was the first game ironically against the Chiefs before
you were there. So those guys had the entire season
to kind of sit back. Patrick he has this ACL injury,
but he plays most of the season. You know, It's
(02:23):
it's kind of unique. It's not like he just sat
all year and watched. He was part of this season.
So this offseason rehabbing, but he also got to, you know,
take ownership and everything that happened. I mean it's kind
of unique that more likely. I mean, all signs pointed
this going really well. Do you think that benefits him
that that last year, the struggles that he actually got
to partake in, and it's not like he had nothing
(02:45):
to do with it.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
I guess yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
No, I mean all that's good, and you know, we'll
just see how he does going forward here. We're not
guaranteeing anything with everybody's different than right now. He's doing
a good job and working his tail off and being
able to get out there and do that, but that's
different than when it's live. So we'll just see how
(03:08):
he does here over the next couple of months before
we get started.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
You know, justin Fields, I remember a couple of years
ago and Ryan Poles, you know, used to work for
you guys there, so you know him well. I remember
when he traded him. He was so impressed the way
Fields handled everything and the way he's really handled his
whole career these last couple of years in Pittsburgh and
New York. I know how much you guys value that
quarterback room. And the character stuff. Obviously, from a trade standpoint,
(03:33):
he's right up your alley, big arm can move, big kid.
But from a character standpoint, you making that move this offseason,
how much did that mean for you guys? From the
person as well as this player, this kind of guy
that you can work with.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, no, he's top notch.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Were a great kid, I mean, phenomenal kid, John, and
he's very very smart. He's just getting his feet wet
here within the offense. Every day he gets a little
bit better and more comfort for ball and like what
we see, but we'll just see where it goes. But
he he's been working with the ones and doing a
nice job and getting used to the receivers and whether
(04:11):
it's the tight ends or or the white outs, and
then what we're doing with the running back stuff.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
So but I sure like the way it goes about
his business.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
When you are are talking about making the trade. Obviously,
over the years you've played him, you've seen him on
cross tape, but really dive into him. How far do
you go back from an evaluation standpoint? Before you know,
you go of each let's let's do this. Well.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
I was lucky enough to have Matt Naggi here, so
Matt had him and drafted him and that one year
in Chicago, so I've got a little I had a
little feel on how he was made up and how
he went about his business and and then I've heard
nothing but good things from his other stays around the league.
So I was very comfortable doing it. And you know,
(04:56):
we just we just keep getting better every day. That's
that's the key, and and becoming more familiar with everything.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Well, you had another quarterback that you guys draft in
the seventh round. I actually worked with Nuss's dad at
Freso State. He was the offensive coordinator, so football family.
Nuss's dad was a left he could could play back
in the day, and you know, his season kind of
went awry. Obviously, he got injured, had that abdominal thing
that I guess came out in training camp. The evaluation
(05:26):
process there and how's he been coming along for you?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, so our scouts liked him and.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Each liked him, so I felt very comfortable with bringing
him in in particular where we got him, I mean
in the seventh round.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
I mean that's.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
You know, that's a great spot to pick somebody up,
and that's a good football player. But he's done nothing
but impressed people here, and he goes about his business.
He understands the game. He was raised in it and
his dad was a good player at Idaho there and
and so he's been around it his whole life and
(06:03):
he kind of gets gets it and you can see
that when he's out here playing.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Is it kind of weird looking back now that mahomes
You know, when you first got him, obviously you have Alex,
and then you bring in Chad Henney, who I'm pretty
sure had been in the league for a while, was married.
Now he's the veteran guy with with these younger guys,
it's you've kind of seen it all in your career
home when it comes.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
In, No, you know, we're not getting younger. So I
remember when you were a pup too, so I remember that. Yeah,
that's right. But he's listen, he's a great kid. It's
been fun to watch him grow. He's got a great wife.
He's got all these babies and that are that he's
he's loving on and growing them and so uh, they
(06:49):
they're very good parents.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
And he just goes about it the right way.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
And he's still the hardest worker in here. And he's
been here every day. I know that's been out there,
so he's been but that's what it is. I mean,
he's here every day and it's been seven he puts
in a whole work day, so it's a rehaving that
leg and he's done a good job with it.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Do you think a big part of your guys' success
has been the culture? You know, we hear that word
a lot, but obviously gets set by the players as
much as the coaches. His work ethic and obviously Travis
and the other guys you've had along the years, so
everyone else that comes in year in, year out. You
just had three guys draft in the top forty. That's
immediately what they see.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, now, sure helps.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
And it started really given credit where the whole thing starts.
When I first got here, we had a lot of
really good defensive players here, and those guys, all those
veteran guys came out to me and they go, you
just tell us what you want done, and we're going
to do it, and we'll make sure everybody else does it.
And so my hat goes off to those guys for
that attitude and then we're able to challenge him and
(07:59):
they hung with it, and that's that's where the culture
takes place. And those guys get the credit for that,
and then these other guys are just kind of followed
in line. And we've and Brett's done a nice job
as John Dorrissey did before, bringing guys in that are
good guys, that are team guys. And as long as
(08:19):
you have that, you're normally in pretty good shape.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Now, you guys don't draft high very often, but when
you do, obviously the homes thing you trade it up.
This year it felt like no one saw it coming.
You guys do a pretty good job of operating like
Seal Team six and then just pounceing on the guy
you want it? Is that a conscious effort to you
and Veach and the whole crew talk about just let's
let's keep quiet. He because didn't you you guys zoom
delaying what it was like forty eight hours right before
(08:44):
the draft.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, well you know how that thing goes man, Those
loose lips sink the ships. I mean, that's there's nothing.
There's nothing greater in this, especially amongst scouts, and there
are a.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Lot of people involved.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
So you tell one person is not sered, you know,
it's it spreads. It spreads fast in this league. So
I think Brett did a nice job of keeping keeping
it at bay and and uh, keeping it under wraps.
I thought, Listen, a great job on his part. That's
not an easy thing to do. And he had his
sight set on on this kid from the get go.
(09:19):
So and he actually got the.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
The deal done with Andrew a week or two beforehand,
and so it was just a.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Matter of him being there at that time and that
opportunity to go up and get him, and for those
two guys to be able to keep it quiet.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
I thought was great.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
When's the first time he brought him up to you?
Speaker 1 (09:43):
That was a while back.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I mean he said, this guy is the best corner
in the in the draft, and you know, we did
we did a couple things with our corners and lost
a couple of corners, whether it's to trade or or
free agency, and so we had we knew that was
an important position to replenish with, and so we had

our you know, Brett had his sight set on this kid.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
For a while.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
The emphasis on the defensive line. You know, you take Woods,
you take Thomas, Yeah, I mean you have two picks,
right twenty nine and forty. So you get to restock
the cover right there. Uh, tell me about those two guys,
how they've been looking at practice. Yeah, excitement to add
some big time talent up front.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Yeah, both Peter and ar Mason are.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
They're they're good athletes and and so we needed we
needed some charge in there, just guys that could could
move around a little bit and when needed, if they
need a pass rush that they can put pressure on
these quarter It's quarterbacks are too good in this league,
and so are the offensive linemen. So you've got to
you've got to have some athletic ability and if you
(10:55):
can get it in a in an inside technique, that's
that's a tough.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Thing to do, but it's also a great thing. We
were able to do that.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I think the other big off season move Kenneth Walker.
Is it safe to say the Chiefs plan on leading
the league in rushing this year?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yeah? I don't know about that. I mean, I'm glad,
I'm glad we have for sure.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Yeah, I mean that's you know, he wins the MVP.
Safe to say, that's a guy you know, coming when
he was coming out of Michigan State. You guys had
your eyes on you followed his career really pops this
year used to playing in big games. I mean, you
guys play every other week. It's you know, Thursday night,
Sunday night, Monday night. Right, So this is a guy
that's kind of used to the bright lights, the pressure,
(11:39):
big time division. Did you factor all that in besides
just the player of knowing the pressure that comes with
playing I mean, you guys are now like, you know,
the Midwest Cowboys in terms of your brand recognition.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Coach, Yeah, right, I would tell you I love the kid.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
I mean, he's a tremendous kid, and he goes one
hundred miles every map out here. He's something to watch.
And I'm not telling you we're going to leave the
league in rushing, but I know we've got a good
offensive line and he's a good running back. So and uh,
he'll come out of the season knowing that he's run
(12:15):
the ball a few times.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Is there a specific skill with him that that you
like and that you were intrigued by that you think
he has your offense?
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, I think he saw it.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
You know when the other running back there got got hurt,
that he could kind of do everything they were rotating
those guys and putting him in situations, certain situations, but
you got to see him do third nine, You got
some catch the football, got to see him in short
yardage and goal line, red zone. So you got that
whole package there, and he did it all and did
(12:45):
it well. So I thought that was important. We do
have Demarcato here, so we picked him up from Arizona,
drafted a kid out of the Brat.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
I like that guy de Barcado can play.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yeah, drafting kid out of out of Nebraska who we
think is pretty good. We've got Smitty coming back. It
was a rookie last year. So we've got a good,
good group of guys there that we feel pretty good about.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
You know, I was thinking, I remember, I don't know
if it was my first or second year with you.
We had a Thursday night game in Seattle, and in
early on those Thursday night games, we're kind of it's
like the Eagle shouldn't be going to Seattle. It's kind
of crazy. But the Thursday night package now has become
a kind of like Monday night football.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
The international games are, you know, obviously a polarizing topic
right now, was it? I think two years ago you
guys went to Brazil last year.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Yeah, last year, last year.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
So what was that fifteen plus hours in the air.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, it was a lot of hours. And you know,
we've traveled the world since we've been here. We've been
to Germany, We've been to London, we've been in Mexico,
been in Brazil. And our guys they love it having
an opportunity to go to these different places. And I
think Roger Cadell's doing a phenomenal job of making this

thing worldwide game.

But from a coach's standpoint, a.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Player standpoint, the reality of it is a long way
to go for an hour football. But you know, you
do it and the fans love it, which once you
get there and you kind of get settled, it's it's
kind of a neat experience.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
The Brazil experience. You know, these guys are going to
Australia this year, which is a similar long flight. I'm
sure you start thinking about that thing how to work
training camp the end. But is that also a feel
thing during training camp of knowing you got to leave
way early. I mean it's pretty unknown, right, I Mean
that's one thing going to London. It's another thing, you know,
getting in a plane, because what's the London from Kansas City?

What's that seven eighty?
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yes, yeah, not too far.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
That's basically double in the air. You know, injured players,
maybe you're less likely to take a guy cushion or something.
I mean, it is a massive impact on you and
how you run the schedule, right.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
It is.

But it's feasible travel. They they make it as easy
as possible. Give you a nice big plane that you
can stretch out on. Players, get all the first class
seats and.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
So you know it works out.

But it is you get Nick and Bruce coming back,
that's that can be a long flight for you if
you get injured and so, but it's workable. It's workable,
and I understand what the league's doing. The league's going
to continue to grow and people like it and so
they like the sport. So you know, you do it,

and you put yourself in the right mindset, you can
tang there, do anything.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
But it can be challenging. Yeah for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Well, I know we got to wrap here. So I
do have to ask you the Miles Garrett trade. Where
were you when that thing went down? I set them
on your schedule here Coach twelve thirteen after you play
the Bills the previous week, so a nice little stretch there.

I was actually watching the Rams because we play them,
and I was going and, man, we're gonna get after
these guys.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
They did that. No, I'm joking.

Now that Listen, birth wasn't bad either. I'm gonna just
tell you he's a pretty good player too. But they
went out and did a did a nice job of
picking uh, you know, picking him up. Garrett's a good
football player, and you know, they picked up McDuffie our corner,
and so they're they're putting a push on things. And
I was joking McVeigh at the owner meetings about it.

He's doing a heck of a job, and uh, they're
you know, they're they're putting putting it all in there
and and.

Listen, he does a great job of coaching. GM does
a heck of a job bringing players in. Their owner
is top notch. He was our top donor when I
was coaching at the University of Missouri, so I have
known him for a little bit and he just does
a you know, he does a great job there too.
So they feel like they're close and so they're they're

doing these things and you know, good for them, as.

You know what's pretty crazy is you know, it's pretty

well documented Patrick Mahomes and his ability to already get
on the field. Beach talked about this like two months
ago that he was hoping to be ready for training camp. Uh,
definitely week one. You can tell Andy's is definitely not
forcing that, and he's smart to do that, but he's
already repping in these practices. You got every time the

Colts post something on social media, it's Daniel Jones slinging
the rock, and you have Micah Parsons where the report
today towards ACL is that he's not going to be
back till the middle of October potentially, and he said
the goal is to be ready to go for the playoffs,
you know, to finish the season strong. But it does
(20:33):
show you how much easier it is on these guys'
bodies to play the quarterback position than all these other positions.
And it gets back to something Tom Brady said years ago.
He said, on a good high school team, the unique
part about my position, I could not start at any
other position. Couldn't play D line, couldn't play wide receiver,
(20:54):
couldn't play O line, couldn't play tight, couldn't do anything
else on a high school level. And I think it
quarterback right. Once they get the stability and their achilles
in their knee, they're not gonna be exactly what they
were one hundred percent pre injury off the bat, but
it is a much easier runway to come back for
these quarterbacks. I mean, Daniel Jones broke his leg and
(21:16):
towards achilles, like ready week one. Patrick Mahomes like, give
me reps into OTAs. I mean, you tore your ACL
with a couple of games to go in the season.
It's not like Patrick Mahomes I mentioned this to Andy Peyton.
Manning missed the entire season. Tom Brady tore his ACL
Week one. Remember Aaron Rodgers towards Achilles five or six
plays into the season. Was he was banging the drum,
(21:39):
drinking the dolphin blood or whatever if his team was
still alive to come back in December yet at defensive
line or pass rusher, outside linebacker, whatever you want to
consider Micah Parsons, you know, think about the difference in
terms of explosion, holding up blocks against double teams, empowering
(22:01):
guards as you're on stunts and twists. There's just so
much more required in terms of the force on that
body part than there is on the quarterbacks. You know,
it's pretty crazy now. And in fairness to the Packers
who trade multiple first round picks, they give a guy
almost one hundred and fifty million dollars or whatever, and
(22:23):
rightfully so, I think he got one hundred and forty
four guaranteed. I mean, it's the biggest contract they've ever
signed non quarterback by a country mile. You're definitely not
gonna force it. You know that the Colts don't have
a choice. And I think one thing Patrick Mahomes has proven.
Remember he dislocated his knee, missed a week and it
was like back. Remember the playoff game, He like shook
(22:43):
it off, missed a halfer, was back the next week.
He just has certain people. And this goes back to
Adrian Peterson, who's like an all time outlier freak. Is
some people just react faster. Hell I pull a back muscle.
Now I'm feeling it for a month. That's over forty.
You have a little tweak, I add something going on
on my shoulder. I'm like, I pray this isn't a
(23:05):
torn labram, you know, But I just keep powering through
it at the gym and just we'll see where the
cookie crumbles on that one. But some of these guys,
they come back really really fast. And again, I just
think it's a little bit easier on your extremities, especially
your like non throwing shoulder at the quarterback position than
(23:26):
it is all these other positions, especially offensive and defensive line,
where everything is not only explosive movements but holding up
against powerful other human beings. So I think the Micah
Parsons thing is less like an abundance of caution and
more just predicated on what he has to do at
his position. You know. The other thing I saw is
(23:49):
Maria Taylor. Remember Jimmy Butler when he had that thing
in Minnesota where he wanted more money, they wouldn't pay him.
And he showed up in like a training camp practice
and he got all the backups and he said scrimmage
against all the starters and he just dominated it. And
then he like walked out of practice, said f you
to everybody, pay me my money, and was on with
(24:11):
Rachel Nichols later that night. Just an incredible Jimmy Butler
moment during his career. Clearly Maria Taylor like she had
the insight on this one. And AJ Brown, she talked
to him on her podcast and he had mentioned something
to me that really resonated, cause I think a lot
of people are like you guys, you guys hate each other,
(24:32):
is just because you hate the offense. I've been told
it's been well reported, like people like AJ Brown and
Philly is like what's going on? And he was asking
about Jalen Hurts, who they used to be really close.
Part of the reason when the Eagles traded for him
picked seventeen. It's not like they gave up nothing. And
it was like, well, he's ben buddies with Jalen Hurts
(24:52):
for a long time, like they have a personal relationship.
And then aj said something that I think we can
all relate to. Grew apart. Now you can argue that's
the political answer. It's not like he's given us all
the tea on that one, but it's like, yeah, sometimes
people just grow apart. The amount of people listening to
this that have left a job because they didn't see
(25:16):
eyed eye with a superior, they didn't see eyed eye
with people they were working, you know, hand in hand with.
He was like, I'm not feeling this, and you try
to battle through, especially if things are going well financially,
like I'm making money, but this sucks. This is not
what I signed up for. And luckily for all of us,
we can leave whenever we want. That is not the
(25:38):
case for players or coaches. Sometimes you could get stuck.
The I just saw the clip that went viral about
Jim Schwartz who wanted the Cleveland Browns job, who thought
he had deserved and earned the Cleveland Browns job, and
you could argue like it wouldn't have been a crazy decision,
and they ended up going with the offensive guy in Munkin,
but they wanted Schwartz to stay. And he's like, guys, listen,
(26:02):
this isn't about I don't respect Todd Munkin, but I
wanted this gig. I didn't get it. It's pretty well known,
like all the players know that. And now I'm answering
to him like this is not gonna work. And remember
the Browns tried to mess with him for a little bit,
like we're gonna hold you under contracts. Fine, I'll just
fucking resign. I'm sitting out and I think when you know,
you know right, and aj Brown he didn't handle it perfectly.
(26:25):
You know, while it's funny, you know that he was
reading the book on the sideline, that's not ideal. And
where did he kind of force his way to And
luckily they were willing to play ball with Howie and
give him enough where it's like, yeah, we'll just do this.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Deal.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Is the guy that he knows really well, and a
guy that he had a lot of uh success with
and a really good working relationship with, and a guy
that he clearly didn't want to leave. But financially, I'm
not sure all the dirt behind that trade. We've never
truly found, Like it was just the owner didn't want
to pay him a new content track to John Robinson
(27:01):
want out. But bottom line is he was traded and
it worked out really well for aj Brown. But when
you're not seeing eye to eye with the quarterback, it's
especially at a position like wide receiver, and most of
these wide receivers, let's just be honest, don't handle it
that well like quarterbacks. And you gotta give Jalen credit,
(27:23):
not necessarily on the field because it started getting weird,
but off the field, like he keeps it very professional.
He never really lets you in. He kind of keeps this, uh,
this outer exterior of like I'm not gonna give you
any of what's actually going on. Brandon Graham kind of did,
and then Howie and the boys made him walk that
(27:43):
thing back, but he's like, yeah, we just we don't
see eyed eye. What he's essentially saying is I don't
want to work with him anymore. I don't want to
play with him. And even he said to Maria Taylor,
like I still got love for the guy. It's not
like I hate his guts. I'm sure a lot of
you have left places where it's like, listen, I kind
of like this guy. I just don't want to work
with him anymore. And as a player, like you get
(28:04):
lucky when you can quote unquote force your way out.
Part of the reason they waited, you know, to June
one because of the cap situation. I mean, the Eagles
didn't foresee this happening a couple of years ago. They
just gave the guy contract extension. The Eagles have paid
this man twice. They paid him. They gave him the
contract when they traded for him, and then they gave
him the contract a couple of years later after he
had dominated. So I think in their mind he was
(28:26):
like he was gonna be their number one wide receiver
for a long time. And then personalities happen, and let's
face it, people change, right. Look at Jalen Hurts came
into this league as a second round pick that people
like me that watch every Oklahoma game, like, I don't

and to be just this young ascending player, they're gonna

need a little bit by committee to get the dominance

getting one hundred catches in fifteen hundred yards? Probably not,
But if they can get seventy eight to eighty two
and have him dominate in man coverage, which is something
that he excels in because he's a physical freak. He's
got just the ability to catch balls in contested areas,
which is a finding skill for a lot of players.
You know, Drake London just got a one hundred million

dollars guaranteed, big physical wide receiver. Now, Drake's a little
different than AJ Brown, but and it's a good example
of Drake London. Like a lot of players think about this.
He just got this big contract. It's a brand new
GM and a brand new coach. Now, a good front office,

you want to keep your new players. But they haven't

been there that long and they're already like all in
on this guy. Pretty good sign, you know, pretty good
sign coming off a year. He's a little banged up,
but two years ago he was excellent. I mean, he
was good when he was on the field. But you
gotta feel good when new people come in and they
believe in you and they pay you. It's like the
thing with Verse, Like at the end of the day,
you were the guy that they had to have to

trade the best player in the history of the franchise
beside Jim Brown. They wanted you. Like, that's always gotta

battled some injuries too, but they got a lot of

having a line of guys that if someone goes down,

that with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those guys have gotten injured.
So sometimes you you know, a guy like that who

gets a four year, hundred million dollar contract, what what
round was he drafted in? Because one of the knocks
on him was he was a little undersized. You know,
