if you're a city like Los Angeles. So yeah, other
than that, you guys know the drill. Let's just let's
just dive in and talk some football. So I wanted
to start with this because I think, you know, I
worked in personnel. I know a lot of people that
work in that industry, and they get very passionate over players,

(01:55):
no different than fans. Personnel people have a lot in
common with fans. They dislike certain players and they love
certain players. And you know, it's the old adage of
like pound the table, get on the table, stand on
the table for this player, and tell us how much
you love them. Obviously, general managers, depending on the organization

(02:17):
button most have the control and the power to actually
pick the player in conjunction with the coach. But I
don't think we do a good enough job of talking
about how much influence coaches have during that process and
how they fall in love with players. And I remember
hearing stories when I first got in the league of

(02:37):
like you know, the personnel people liked the player, but
we knew our position coach hated them, coordinator wasn't that
fond of him. It wasn't worth taking them because we
knew they probably wouldn't play them and it would just
be too big of a pain, so we just went
in a different direction. That type stuff happens all the time,
and beside, the general manager in the personnel department really

(03:01):
has any power once the guy is in the roster,
whether he's playing or not, coaches have all the influence, right,
And it's why so often as the season goes like
why isn't this guy playing more? Or vice versa, why
is this guy playing so much? It's usually because coach
likes him a lot. And one thing, you know, from

(03:22):
a personnel standpoint, it was always like, you know, I
don't really care that he knows the playbook, he can't
actually play, and the coach is like, but he's so smart,
he's always in the right position. I was like, yeah,
and he misses every tackle when he's there, or he
never catches the ball, or he never makes a play.
Sometimes though, it just the marriage is perfect, like I

(03:43):
love this player and the player is actually good and
when the play caller or the coordinator is that person,
the ceiling for that individual player is really really high.
When the head coaches that individual, the ceiling for that
player is unlimited. And Ben Johnson, you know, last year

(04:04):
when they're their first draft, I do think some people
were shocked when they took Loveland at ten and then
they took Luther Burden in the second round. People went,
they already got multiple wide receivers, they already got DJ Moore,
They just drafted Roma Dunes in the top ten. They
have Cole Comett, who they just extended, who's really solid
tight end. It was like, no, I want my own

(04:26):
guys up in this operation. And what happened this offseason
they got rid of Dj Moore. What's probably gonna happen
next offseason. Maybe Cole Comett gets dope. And I'm not
lumping those two players together. And in the sense that
I don't know how big of a DJ Moore guy
Ben Johnson was, but I know that this offseason Ben

(04:48):
Johnson told you how much he loved Luther Burden. Well one,
he told you when they drafted him in the second round,
which I think a lot of teams around the league
were like, I don't know, no one ever just be
the guy's talent. I think there were some other question
marks off the field, which there are with a lot
of guys on the draft, and depending on the draft
room you go in, some teams aren't his I would say,

(05:12):
pessimistic about those things, and another front officers are like, yeah,
that's that's a deal breaker for me. And when Ben
Johnson said this offseason, I'm going to buy stock in
Luther Burn and then he compares him to Amen Ross
Saint Brown, who I would say is viewed as one
of clearly the most productive players in the league, but

(05:33):
just pound for pound, one of the tougher guys in
the league, one of the guys like if you just
need to go to war on Sunday, you want that
guy in the in your huddle, you want that guy
on your team. He's that type player, regardless whether he
has ten for one fifty and two touchdowns or just
a couple catches, you want to be in the trenches

(05:54):
with Amen Ross Saint Brown. That's the type guy he is.
And Ben Johnson in a front row seat becoming a star,
play call with that guy, and now he's building up
and listen Luther Burdon had a pretty exciting rookie year,
given that there were a bunch of other offensive pieces
and they were running the ball a lot. He had
forty seven catches. So Ben Jonson's trying to tell you, you know,

(06:14):
I'm not a huge fantasy football guy. But if that's
the guy calling the place, and he keeps telling you
by stocking this guy, this guy's reminding me of amenros
Saint Brown, it's pretty clear this is one of his
favorite players on the team, just based on his words,
might be his favorite player on the team. And when

(06:35):
that's the case, and listen, I've seen head coaches love
guys on the practice squad. You just are not cutting
this guy because I love him. I'm not saying he's
gonna play on game day, but we are not getting
rid of this player. I love this guy for whatever reason. Ideally,
you would want it to be a really talented player
that you're using for your head coach to love, and
that seems like the case here because this is a

(06:58):
guy that's gonna start play a lot and he's the
guy that you know, draws up the offense. So if
I was a fantasy football guy and I wanted someone
to be really productive in twenty twenty six. I would
imagine Ben Jonson's gonna have a lot of play calls
in the Kayleb Williams that involve throwing the ball to

(07:20):
this guy, because it'd be one thing of like, you know,
I set the standard really high. He's kind of started slow.
He keeps telling you how well this thing is going
and is powerful right when the decision maker, When the
person in power believes in you, that's an empowering feeling.
I can say it from my own experience, you know,

(07:40):
being involved with Colin for as long as I've been involved.
It's a confidence builder. When the guy that matters most,
talks you up, wants to involve you, is behind and
in your corner, that kind of matters. I saw it
firsthand when I used to go to forty nine or
practices when brock per he was young. Do you think

(08:01):
it's random that his confidence came out of nowhere just
because he was a starter at Iowa State. No, Kyle
Shanahan believed in the motherfucker and told everybody, I think
this guy's a franchise quarterback. It's like, are you sure?
It's like, well, Kyle was. It's like, you think this
guy's Amin Ross Saint Brown. You think this guy's gonna
be like a Pro Bowl high end all Pro wide receiver. Yeah,

(08:21):
I do. And I'm Ben Johnson. You all think I'm
one of the best play callers in the league. I
resurrected the Bears, and this is the guy I believe in,
cause like, yeah, a lot of people believed in Caleb Williams,
like what's he leveland was a top ten pick. He's
basically telling you, like, this guy's going to be a
stud and that you know resonates it should. If I

(08:47):
was Luther Burden's agent or in his camp, I would
be like, bro, the most important guy in the building
believes in you want you to be a star. Do
everything humanly possible to do everything he wants. When he
says jump, don't just jump, then jump again because I'll

(09:10):
promise you this. I'm looking around the landscape of the
league and just saw Chris Olave, who good player for
him first round pick, have one breakout year and get
ninety million dollars guaranteed in a couple of years. Because
you were a second round pick, meaning you are contract
eligible after your third year. The numbers we could be talking.
If this goes well, are start in the nine figures

(09:34):
guaranteed money. So whatever this man asks. And if you
if you don't feel one hundred percent but you're not injured,
you're just a little banged up, do everything possible to
be on the field at all times and lay it
on the line for this guy, because where your position's
trending financially and the ability to be a star at

(09:55):
your position, given that this guy's the one pulling the
trigger on where the ball goes and telling Hale where
to throw. Bro, you got it pretty good speaking of
someone that doesn't have it really good. Is by all
accounts in reports and the buzz around the league is
Kyler Murray's gonna be the starting quarterback, which to me

(10:15):
is not a story. It is not a story. I mean,
it's going to be a story, but it shouldn't be
like a jaw dropping WHOA didn't see that coming when
Kyler Murray is named the quarterback, like after what happened
last year, and then you factor in the previous year
that he was just unavailable, and then you factor in
his body of work in college didn't have to do

(10:37):
that much. It just you could have seen this coming
from a mile away once we got to the off season.
To me, the question is with JJ McCarthy, once Kyler
is named the starting quarterback, can JJ McCarthy be the
backup quarterback? Because let's face it, when you got Kevin
O'Connell making a lot of money, I think Brian Flores

(10:57):
is one of, if not the highest paid co co
ordinators in the entire league. You're paying a bunch of
guys on your team a lot of money, multiple tackles,
a wide receiver like You've invested a lot into this
team at a bunch of different positions. You got a
bunch of high end players. So the expectation, even if
you can't win the division because you got some quarterback transition,

(11:18):
will be to compete for a wildcard spot. Do you
feel comfortable making JJ McCarthy your backup quarterback? And I
think we have recent examples. Trey Lance is won. When
you draft a guy really high and then he is
basically benched, it gets uncomfortable, and it gets uncomfortable fast.

(11:38):
And last year Anthony Richardson, which somewhat of a similar situation,
when Daniel Jones was named the starting quarterback, I can't
remember the exact day, but maybe midway through training camp
there was that moment when Anthony Richardson in the preseason
game didn't see the blitz come in and got injured
and like dislocated as pinky remember or one of his fingers.

(12:00):
They just didn't have a choice because the were only
other quarterback on the roster was the rookie who was
I'm pretty sure was injured two at the time. I'm
kind of forgetting. But when Trey Lance, who had to
compete with Sam Darnold for the backup job, like he
didn't win the jobs, like, well, we don't even want
him on the roster, and they just traded him to
the Cowboys, And I just wonder, if JJ McCarthy can't

(12:21):
be the starting quarterback, can he be the backup when
you already have Carson Wentz on the roster. And he'd
be like, well, John, why do you just want to
sell low trade him for a sixth or a seventh
conditional pick. Why wouldn't you just keep him around, keep
working with him and not just you know, wave the
white flag to this experiment, Because in fairness to JJ,

(12:44):
all quarterbacks drafted high unless you're freaking John Elway, Peyton Manning,
or like Andrew Luck are kind of experiments. Patrick Mahomes
was an experiment. Now, some experiments turn out to be
have an incredible results, right, and some experiments go nowhere

(13:04):
and their results are putting a shredding machine and never
seeing again. And I think at this point in time,
if you're Kevin O'Connell, you have a new general manager,
how about we just move on. I'm a huge believer
when something isn't working of just pivoting and going to
the next thing, because I think anytime most humans are

(13:27):
wired the same way, whether it's you know, kind of
a relationship. You know, when you're trying to break up
with somebody but you're still seeing them, you're still kind
of sleeping together, and when you get lonely, you still
hang out. It's like you're never going to break up
doing that. Sometimes you just gotta put a line in
the stand, delete the other person's number, mute the other person,
and just go your separate ways cold turkey. It's very,
very difficult to do, but when you do that, it's

(13:51):
easier to take the next step of like, what do
we need to do to figure out our quarterback situation,
assuming that Kyler Murray can't just resurrect his career and
be the franchise quarterback for Minnesota, because I don't believe that.
Like I still got a lot of questions, but like
as a lot of you Vikings fans often pushed back
when I think this is not gonna work, you go,
this franchise historically has had a really really high floor.

(14:12):
And I'm in totally agreement here. You have excellent coaching,
you have really good players on the roster. You know,
Kyler's proving, he get banged up, and he's a little
bit of an inconsistent player. And in fairness to him,
like some of his inconsistency is simply when you're five
to nine and you're throwing over guys six foot four,
it's it's kind of difficult. So it's hard to just
sit in the pocket and just slice and dice people

(14:33):
like you're Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Like to me
as short of a quarterback as you want, like six'
one is really pushing. It, well six' one is like
three and a half inches taller Than Kyler. Murray but
Like Kyler murray's worst, day he's more. Talented he's just
gonna be more effective THAN jj. McCarthy the question, is
Is Carson wentz gonna be more effective THAN jj, McCarthy and,

(14:56):
honestly that might not even be the. Question maybe the
question is Does kevin O'Connell and the new general manager
From seattle believe That Carson wentz is going to be
more effective THAN jj, McCarthy because if that is the
case this, league you, KNOW i love it WHEN gm
say my job is to think about the next five.

Years maybe that used to be the, case but in
the pace in which the league operates now society, operates
it's probably more like a couple of. Years and most
coaches live year to year and really week to week
once the season. Starts so my guess is THAT jj

McCarthy's on another team by the time we start week,
one when whenever it's official that he hasn't won the

of that old school tree of a lot more under,
center a lot more play. Act and Historically Lamar jackson under,
center while he's done at less than ten percent of the,
time has been extremely. PRODUCTIVE i think he's twenty five

the majority of his offensive snaps have either been in

the shotgun or the, pistol which is just you, know
a manipulated version of the. Shotgun just the running back
happens to be behind you instead of on the side of.
You AND i think we've seen a couple of recent
examples Of Matt, ryan who is And i'm not saying
they're going to run The shanahan, offense but a huge

part of going under center is it helps the running
game and it leads to some very very easy passes
when the running game is working because it's a lot of,
boots waggles and getting the quarterback on the. Move even
if it's just a one read running back right in
front one of, them a tight end in the, flat

the guy's wide. Open it's a pitch and catch where
the the the you, know offensive skill guy can walk
to a first first. Down the other thing is when
the when the defensive end or outside linebacker crashes on
the run game and a guy is is kind of

a bootleg. Play if you have the athletic ability Of Lamar,
jackson that could go from like a couple of yard
first down to like twenty five yards where he doesn't
even get. Touched he can just go at an angle
too out of bounds and gain fifteen twenty. Yards So
Matt ryan is a good example of someone that hated,
it transitioned to, it embraced. It because it is uncomfortable

putting your back to the defense when you've never done
it and won AN. Mvp BUT i don't think that's
a great example Because Matt ryan is not a good
athlete relative TO nfl. PEOPLE i think the better example
Is Aaron, rodgers who was, LIKE i am very comfortable in.
Shotgun i've proven to be one of the great all
time players playing my, Way but new, coach can we

morph an offense into WHAT i do well and what
you do? Well and what Happened Aaron? Rodgers he went
back to back. MVPs SO i think if they can
find a perfect happy medium of the Stuff Lamar jackson
has excelled at for five years to some of the
easy shit that Makes Sam darnold and, pretty you, know

have games where they look like stars because it's pitch and.
Catch with twenty thirty percent of these passes that are
just easy because of the, scheme it can unlock some.
Stuff And i'm not that bullish on The, ravens BUT
i do think when you have a guy with this
skill set who can be an accurate, passer who can

throw on the, move and who's just movement ability in
this offense is better than everybody's. Right if you just
go around The shanahan offense over the LAST i don't,
know ten. Years the high end athleticism is Like, Rogers Sam,
darnold you, know But stafford can't move. Anymore Matt ryan

could never, Move cousins couldn't. Move so if you kind
of go, around it's kind of uniquely set up here
to be pretty. Fun and speaking of being pretty, fun
we often talk about quarterbacks and the importance of who their,
coaches because it can make or. Break if you Get Bill,

wallash if you Get Andy, reid if you Get Mike,
holmgren you can become a. Legend if you get An Ebra,
fluse it could ruin your. Career Jeff fisher's first year
With Jared goff made him look like a. Bum next

Overnight no coaching, scheme, techniques confidence building up a, guy

(21:58):
letting a guy figure it, out figuring out what they do,
well what they don't do. Well all that really. Matters
we don't talk about it. Enough at running, back most
guys are Not Barry. Sanders you could Put Barry sanders
anywhere and he would have been, okay if you gave
him a better offensive, line he would be more. Dominant
but you could give him a terrible offensive line and

(22:20):
he was still gained fourteen hundred. Yards. Right BUT i
was thinking the other day About Terrell, davis you, know
kind of one of the more unique careers of all.
Time late round. Pick makes a big play in training,
camp they have some. Injuries by the start of his rookie,
year he's starting at running. BACK a couple of years,
in he's running for two thousand yards and Winning Super. Bowls,
clearly he's a talented player and just needed the right.

Opportunity but it's not like he came From Valdosta. State
he was playing At. Georgia he Got Mike, shanahan he
Got John, elway he got the inside and outside. Zone
it was the perfect match for the perfect. Player Like
christian McCaffrey had proven that he could be a really
GOOD nfl. Player he became AN mvp candidate When Kyle

shanahan traded. Form SO i was thinking about asking gent
because he was talking About Listen. Night there's a lot
of pressure on him to be a, leader to be
one of the league. Guys he was six overall. Pick
kubiak had a great quote today that, like we don't
have any turds on this. Team turd is such a
such a coach scouting kind of, Term like you don't

hear you just don't hear that term. Anywhere gotten to
dinner with your, buddies go to just some random convention
for some random industry football always used the word, turd
like that guy's a, turd you know that Guy's And
kubiak is, like we don't have any. Turds and clearly
it feels like they have a bunch of high level.

Guys how good they're gonna be only time will, tell
But jitti is a high, character super impressive. Guy talk
to some people with The. Raiders they, said he's a great,
shape he looks. Excellent but a lot of that position's
out of. Control the offensive. LINE i think there's still
some question, marks but there is no question mark With,
kubiak who go back To Jerald, davis whose dad was

on that staff With Mike Shanahan, kubiak whose dad then
taught all these guys that offense where all these guys
worked for. Him Gary, kubiak who this is his, son
so and you look At clinton last. Year by the
end of the, year who won THE mvp in The Super.

See Asha genty having a big step this, year being
a really productive, guy being a featured guy in this.
Offense pretty excited to, watch kind of the maturation of
this coach and running. Back Clearly. Cousins it's not like
you're going to lean on him for him forty five

was running an offense that was run center in. College
SO i look For Ashon genty to have a pretty big. Year.
SUBSTATION i understand where the first reaction to a lot
of people, Say i'll just conspiracy. Theorists this is just
throwing shit at the wall and seeing if it sticks.

Well since twenty, fourteen the forty Nine ers have consistently
been one, of if not the most injured team in THE.
Nfl in twenty fourteen was also the year the substation
was extended and was added to and Became, honestly Maybe

i've been To Santa clara a million times to forty
nine or, PRACTICE i never paid that much. ATTENTION i
didn't notice and THEN i saw a video the other
day of the size of. It i'm, Like, god it's
even bigger than you. Realize and the forty nine ers
are just dropping like. Flies Mike evans now has a quad.
Injury they've already lost multiple running backs to different. Injuries

their coach obviously is in the concussion, protocol even though
it looks like he's trending out of. It the conversation
about this substation for people with the forty nine is
never going to go away as long as guys keep getting,
injured and it is only going to grow and. Grow
it's easy for me to say turn off your, phone

but people with, teams young, athletes young people in, general
that is a difficult thing to. Do it's easy for
the fifty five year old guy to, go have some,
perspective just turn off the. Phone there is truth to.
That it's a very healthy thing to, do but it's
not necessarily realistic with a lot of young. People and
you can't convince me that this story is if guys

go down at the rate in which they're already going
down and the injuries maintains being a story which it
has consistently been now for over ten, years and Since
kyle has been, there they have been one of the league.
LEADERS i just think these, players it's gonna be easy
to be, LIKE i don't know, SCIENCE i don't know
any of this, stuff AND i agree like no one really.

Knows but we're in the heart Of Silicon. Valley they've
expanded this, thing the power of that. Thing you see
all these other, Clips AND i don't pretend to have
been to that many practice, facilities BUT i feel like
at this point in, TIME i have a pretty good
idea what most of them look, like Because i've seen
them on the. Internet like they're just kind of in urban,

areas big, fields maybe housing projects behind, it maybe some
cornfields behind just. Space, meanwhile the forty nine ers got
fucking WiFi just pulsing through their joints and their, muscles
and every other practice is like that guy's. Down it's, like,
ah not the, substation. LISTEN i don't pretend to, know

But i'm no idiot to know that this story is going.
Nowhere Deshaun watson said that he would like another contract
from The Cleveland browns' that's an all time, comment it really.
