Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
My favorite time of the year outside of the football
season is NFL Free agency and NFL Draft and we
gotta trade today. Just came down ten minutes ago live
in Chicago. It's the Herd wherever you may be, however
you may be watching nor listening, whatever the platform is,
appreciate it. Mark feu Gunzaga basketball coach stopping by today.

(00:52):
A couple of weeks away from March Madness. So we
had a huge trade one minute before yesterday show between
the Rams and the Chiefs. We've got another one. Just
came down Bears and the Buffalo Bills. So everybody has
been throwing shade at Brandon being the GM of the Bills.

(01:12):
I like the move. He just got DJ Moore wide receiver,
a number one ride receiver, who never misses starts. The
dude hasn't missed a start in like five years. Dj
Moore worked with Joe Brady, the head coach, the new
head coach of the Bills in Carolina, and he had
his best year. So Dj Moore is absolutely a number one.

(01:34):
The Bills drafted Luther Burden and Roman Dunza, and they've
got Colston Lovelin and two backs, so Chicago doesn't need
They gotta start getting ready. They may have to make
another move here, Max Crosby maybe need some cap space.
But now Buffalo, Buffalo's got their quarterback, they're running back,
their left tackle, slot receiver, excellent tight ends. Now they've

(01:59):
got their number one. So if keon Coleman, you know,
who knows, Maybe he works, maybe he doesn't. Takes wide
receivers a while to work themselves into, you know, high
end luxury play. If he works, great, If he doesn't, fine,
But look at Buffalo's offense, and they're gonna give up
mid round pick, probably give up like a four. But
this is a move I like. Then it also creates clarity.

(02:22):
Buffalo can now use all their picks on the defensive
side because they've got slot perimeter young receiver, quarterback that
doesn't get hurt much, left tackle, running back tight ends
their set. Nice move and the Bears little cap relieve here.
Maybe big game hunting. And I want to talk about
that because the Rams yesterday gave up another first round pick.

(02:46):
Now they still have one left. But they have traded
nine of their last ten first round picks. Yet their
Super Bowl favorites. Yet they have the second most playoff
wins outside of Kansas City in the last eight years,
only one losing season. How do they do it? How
is it possible? Deepest roster next to Seattle in the league,
maybe Philadelphia? How do they do it? In that same

(03:08):
time period, the Jets have had twelve first round picks,
the Raiders have had eleven, and they both stink. It's
not that the Rams undervalue picks, but is it possible
the rest of the league mostly overvalues picks. We've talked
about this with Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys fall in love with
their picks. They don't spend much money in free agency.

(03:32):
The Cowboys draft somebody, then they pay them, and they
often pay them two or three times. I don't like that.
There are just many ways to be great in this league.
The Seahawks do it through the draft and then go
small game hunting. The Rams get a lot of picks
in the mid rounds like Pooka and Kyron Williams, and
then they go big game hunting. Dvonte, Jalen Ramsey, Matt Stafford,

(03:56):
Trent McDuffie yesterday. It's not like the Rams are giving
a the first round picks for nothing. They got Goff, Jalen, Ramsey, McDuffie,
Matt Stafford, so they're getting something for it. But success
and excellence in the NFL once again, is not just
one framework. You know, it cracks me up when you
go on TikTok. It's like, here's how to solve your liver.

(04:21):
Here's how to absolutely invest this will guarantee a longer life.
It's a bunch of grifters. There's a lot of different ways.
Some people have good genetics, some people have bad genetics.
Some people eat like crap and look great at sixty.
There's no one way to do anything. Hell, Tim Burton
and Christopher Nolan both made a Batman movie. They both
worked okay, and they were very different. So, you know,

(04:45):
the Rams do it one way. They're trading the first
rounder the Buffalo Bills just went out and took a
big swing. I would say this for the Chicago Bears.
I think part of moving Dj Moore is open up
space for Max cro Max Crosby is so much better
than anybody you're going to draft at the end of
the first round what the Chicago Bears are doing. So

(05:10):
I'm not against or four trading first round picks, but
if I get Max Crosby, Jalen Ramsey in his prime,
Matt Stafford, Jared goff, Trent McDuffie, absolutely, okay. So it's
it's funny about this, and we've said this before, is
that you know, everybody likes their president that they vote for, right.

(05:34):
Everybody hates senators except sometimes their own. You know, we're
all that way. So people loved Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan
spent a lot of time at the free throw line.
He wants to average twelve free throws a game. Nobody
complained three times. Kobe Bryant averaged ten free throws a game.

(05:58):
Nobody complained about it. KD He Crickets he averaged early
in his career over ten free throws a game. Crickets.
His game is fluid, it's clean, catch him, shoot fits everywhere.
But people are really up in arms because Sga shoots
a lot of free throws. But he's shooting last night

(06:20):
two in the fourth quarter. That was it two. And
I've never heard a guy get more flak for shooting
two in the fourth quarter. Here's Nick's coach in a loss,
very good game on Sga.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
One of the areas, obviously, is the free throw line.
You know SGA is, he's a tough cover, and he
does a great job of convincing the referees, probably better
than anybody in the league that you know, he's getting hit.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
So what people in the NBA are trying to convince
me of is that either the league's rigging it for
a skinny kid who's not very verbal from a tiny market. Okay,
see that's what Adam Silver wants. Let's have our powerhouse
be in our smallest market. Or you're trying to convince

(07:16):
me that the refs on a nightly basis all get
fooled and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna go there.
If you don't have Shack's power or Lebron's body or
ants vertical and you're six six and a buck ninety four.
You have to manipulate and you have to find your game.
He's a wiry six six a buck ninety five. So

(07:38):
for the record six six and a buck, iway buck
ninety five and I'm six one and a half. He's thin.
In a pro athlete league, he does get bumped a lot.
So and also, I think when you don't have certain
athletic gifts and he doesn't have big hops, you know
you're not doing tomahawk slams T Brady. Why was he

(08:01):
so good pre snap? Same with Drew Brees and Payton
Manning because they had to be. Why was Philip Rivers
good pre snap? Because he had to be so. I
think the truth about this with SGA is you don't
like his game. You love Michael's game, you love Kobe's game,
and they lived at the free throw line. You just
don't like his game. It's not flashy, it's not fun

(08:22):
to watch, right, and it's not. But I mean Kevin Durant,
Michael Kobe games. People love lived at the free throw line.
You know what I look at SGA. You know what
I see? I see a football player. I say, I
see JSN the wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks. Neither
are truly gifted ATHLETICALLYGA JSN both though can manipulate coverage,

(08:51):
both ascending statistically every year they get better, So they
clearly work on their craft work, ethic, manipulation. I qeq
that's what I see. Jsn's always open and SGA often
gets to the free throw line. How how do they
do it? Because they're smart guys, and they use their
body and they manipulate other players. When you don't have

(09:13):
major hops, you don't worry about getting in the air.
You worry about getting other people in the air. So
SGA does a great job to compromise defenders. And for
the record, SGA's game is very unique. It fooled the
Clippers front office. They gave him away. He was only
the number eleven draft pick. So this guy's been fooling

(09:35):
the league and trigging the league and making defensive players,
putting them in compromising spots. Let's give him credit. It's
not about the refs, it's not about the whistle. The
Clippers good front office didn't see it. First ten picks
in the drafts did not see it. It's like JSN,

(09:58):
He's arguably the best player out of that draft, but
he wasn't a burner. He doesn't run past people, so
I we you know, we love to do that. For
the record, I just I want to show. I mean,
I'm not saying SGA didn't have style here. He was
after the game.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Yeah, late game, they were like sitting a lot of doubles,
and I just felt like I ain't got a shot
in a long time, and I wanted to kind of
have my imprint on the game, especially late, so I
tried to just like a screen game. So I tried
to reject it to get space, and then OG was
like chasing to cut me off, so I knew I
had a step back stepped into it knocking out.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
By the way, why does some things look so good
on some people and so bad on other people? That
jacket just would not work with me at all. But
SGA pulls it off, just like he pulls off getting
to the free throw line about seven, eight nine times
a game, or two times in the fourth quarter last night.
Let's give him credit and JSN credit for getting open.

(11:04):
It's not about the refs deciding we want this kind
of quiet guy, skinny guy that's not vertical in tiny
Oklahoma city to dominate the league. That's not it. So Jmak,
the Buffalo Bills, everybody crapped on their GM, Brandon Bean.
We also have to be fair. If you look at
Buffalo this morning, you can look at Baltimore and have

(11:27):
questions about Lamar's deal. You can look at Kansas City
and ask are they the third best team in the division.
You look at Buffalo's offense, new stadium, Weather's going to
be a little better, not as windy now they had
a number one wide receiver. I'd feel pretty good if
I was a Bills fan.

Speaker 6 (11:42):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
I think this is a big move, especially when you
combine it with the Patriots losing Stefon Diggs. I mean,
you look at the Patriots wide receiver room now and
they need a guy aj Brown out there on the market.
But I think djmore really good get for the Bills.
I think the Bears don't lose much when you consider
Luther Burton, Romadunze.

Speaker 6 (12:00):
The tight end situation.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
So I think this is actually one of those rare
good deals for both teams.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
I agree. You know they say it all the time.
Insurance companies aren't in the business of paying you writing
a big check for your claim and we all hope
we never have to use our insurance companies, but they've
hired armies of lawyers to make it happen. Their policies
are all written in legal jargon on purpose, and not
for clarity, but for confusion. Have you really looked at
your life insurance policy or your auto insurance policy? There

(12:29):
are coverage gaps, loopholes, exclusions. You think you're covered, you
don't actually know you would for twenty seven cents a
day if you download Mypolicyadvocate dot com takes five minutes.
Upload your policies Home life Auto, upload all of them.
Where are you covered? Where you exposed? And where can

(12:51):
your insurance company deny you? Five minutes twenty seven cents
a day. Nobody wants to use an insurance company, but
when disaster strikes or bombs, you don't want surprises. Don't
leave it the chance. Go to Mypolicyadvocate dot com.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
You're now entering the No Bull Zone sponsored by Credible
Great Rates none of the bull. So the Buffalo Bills
have already made a move today. Kansas City made a
move yesterday. The Rams did to get Trent McDuffie, and
they got all sorts of draft picks. Kansas City got
a first round pick, a fifth to sixth, the third
round picks. The Kansas City now has two first round picks,

(14:18):
and they've got a couple of needs. But everybody is
bury in Kansas City. And my take is people did
to this with the Rams, but they had Stafford and
they had Sean McVay, and they win a Super Bowl,
they go five and twelve, everybody's beat up, and then
all of a sudden, next three years playoffs in a

(14:38):
Great Division, and now they're favored to win the Super
Bowl next year. Don't bury Kansas City. It's like a
real estate if you got an ocean view and a
good school district. I don't care what the economy is
doing nationally, Yours is not going to go through the floor.
You're okay, Kansas City with two first round picks, and
I believe now Kansas City's on a sh short list

(15:00):
of teams that will move up in this draft, potentially
move up. Most people want to move down because it's
considered an okay draft. Kansas City at nine. Now they've
got a couple of fives. Okay, Now Kansas City's got
two ones. Would not be shocked if Kansas City moved

(15:21):
up three or four spots and got Jeremiah loved the
running back, got a Notre Dame problem solved in the backfield.
Next pick, get a tackle, next pick after that, get
a corner to replace Trent McDuffie. I think you'll be good.
So it's just funny to watch everybody. Barry and I
said this, when you have the head coach and the
quarterback right, you can heal the skin heels very quickly.

(15:44):
I mean a great example of that. Vrabel ends up
with Drake May awful to Super Bowl Chicago train wreck
to a play from the NFC Championship. So you give
me Andy Reid and you give me Patrick Mahomes. If
they nail their first two pack, by the way, moving
off McDuffie, they may be able to afford Walker, the
running back out of Seattle. I think they're going to

(16:06):
be fine. Here's Albert Rear yesterday on why Kansas City
traded McDuffie. A great corner.

Speaker 9 (16:12):
They've drafted and developed pretty well the last few years.
And you know, so that's meant negotiating new contracts with
these guys.

Speaker 10 (16:20):
And some of them get done and some of you,
some of them you don't.

Speaker 9 (16:24):
So this sort of sets up like the Tyreek Hill
deal did, right, Like where the Tyreek Hill deal gave
him an opportunity to reset a bunch of things in
their roster.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
So they've got two first, the second, a third of four,
three fives and a six. Watch them play around with
their three fives and a six to move up, Get
the tackle, get the running back, get the corner. I'm
not burying Kansas City. Jmack with the news.

Speaker 10 (16:49):
No, no, no turns.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
This is the herd Line News.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
All right, God, let's start with this Dj Moore trade.
It's weird like they announced. You know, these reporters are
tripping over themselves to announce.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
We got a trade. We don't even know what the
compensation was.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
They're calling it mid round comp could be a third, fourth, fifth.
I guess we got to wait to find out. Obviously,
it's a good move for Buffalo adding a top tier receiver.

Speaker 6 (17:13):
I don't know you called him a one. Oh, I mean,
I don't know. I don't know that it matter low
end one, high two, I don't know. No, I'm talking
about a guy who had six hundred yards last year.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Yeah, but he's also a lot of that's because the
Bears quarterback runs two good backs, two tight ends, other
good receivers. That's not because they don't like him. It's
because they're fairly stacked on offense. I like this move
by Ryan Polls the Bears GM they got they want
to clear up some space. They got to fix their
defensive line. They need more edge pressure. They need probably
a safety and a corner. They got to get faster

(17:46):
at linebackers. So their issues are defensive. So if they
get it, let's say they get a fourth round pick
and a six. You know what, It's a numbers game.
More picks, better chance you hit a few of them.
So I like him a lot for Buffalo, and I
like it a lot for Chicago. I really did.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
Now, the only thing with Buffalo, let's remember that game
against Denver in the playoffs. They couldn't get any stops.
That's the reason they lost that game. Like Josh Allen,
can you manufacture offense?

Speaker 6 (18:12):
So I like it. I'm just curious what the Bears
are going to end up doing in the draft.

Speaker 10 (18:18):
Colin.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
So we like their receivers, right, Burden and a Jense
two young, good, cheap receivers.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
Do they need like a veteran? Do they need one
other guy?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
Because you said yesterday the Rams have Davonte and Puka
and they need another receiver.

Speaker 6 (18:31):
Do the Bears do they fall into that same situation?

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Well, no, the Bears need an edge rusher and a center.
I mean, okay, I mean Roma Dunze, Luther Burden. I
mean they've shown an ability to find skill people. You know,
they'll probably again if they get a mid round fourth,
go get another wide receiver. But I think their offense
is fine. They do have to get a center. But
the good news they have Joe Toney and Jonah Jackson

(18:54):
on the both sides, so they're fine. But Drew Dalmen
was a pro bowler, so they got to get that fixed.
But you know, I think Chicago and Buffalo have to
field pretty good today.

Speaker 6 (19:03):
Certainly.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
All right, let's move on to the next story. Sticky
in the AFC East. I alluded to this earlier. The
Patriots have dumped Stefan Diggs, the troubled wide receiver. He's
I didn't realize this. He's thirty two years old. This
guy's getting up there in age, and we know off
the field he's an absolute disasters.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
You know he was he was he a problem this
year for New.

Speaker 6 (19:23):
England on the field. No, he was good. He delivered
on the field. He was a solid receiver.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Well what do I do off the field?

Speaker 3 (19:29):
Well, he got in trouble with the law and he's got,
you know, a court situation. He's got the girlfriends. Like
this guy's been on three teams in three years. Colin,
he's gone. It's over for him in New England. I
don't know what kind of market there is for him.
I think the bigger question is what do the Patriots
do to fill that void, and everybody's gonna say a
J Brown.

Speaker 6 (19:46):
I think that's almost too obvious at this point, right.
I wonder if some.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
People are speculating, maybe they throw a hail Mary. They've
got a lot of cap room given the quarterback on.

Speaker 6 (19:56):
The rookie deal. Do they go after Pierce to stretch
the field receiver from Indy?

Speaker 1 (20:02):
I like Pierce a lot. I think that's a good call.
Is so they got to get their offensive line right.
They need an edge rusher. Pierce would be a good
fit for me. I like him.

Speaker 3 (20:11):
So the problem is the numbers that are being thrown
around are a little goofy. They're like, oh, yeah, he
could get thirty million a year. I'm like, whoa hold
on what? Like, listen, he's a good stretch the field guy.
He was fantastic with Daniel Jones throwing the deep ball.
Drake May throws a great deep ball. It feels like
a natural fit. But thirty mil.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
I think if I honestly think the young receivers for
New England probably well coached, get better. My take is
if you get the offensive line right in New England,
you won't have to worry as much about wide receiver.
They're only they got to a super Bowl with a
very average O line and J Mack. That is hard
to do. Cincinnati did that with Burrow and New England

(20:52):
did it. It's hard to get playoff w's with an
average O line. So my take, if they significantly upgrade
their offensive front, New England's gonna be fine.

Speaker 5 (21:03):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (21:04):
I totally forgot this.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Last year, the Patriots were rumored to have made a
play at Chris Godwin. Well, his teammate Mike Evans is
on the market. Mike Evans, now he's a great red
zone target.

Speaker 6 (21:15):
Will be awesome. Yeah, we know he's very talented.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
Play older, good red zone guy.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
Interesting, So Patriots got options and they got the quarterback on.

Speaker 6 (21:22):
The rookie deal.

Speaker 3 (21:22):
Final story, Colin Is Baseball Team USA. Yep, Oh my gosh,
they're just hammering teams. Beat the Giants fifteen to one,
scored fourteen on the Rockies.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
In exhibition play.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
They took on Brazil tomorrow at eight eastern on Fox.
It should be a very good game, and we've already
had two good games in pool play.

Speaker 6 (21:41):
South Korea beat check G eleven to four.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
In Australia shutout Chinese type three zero. Obviously, everybody's fired
up to see Otani tomorrow morning, five am Eastern on FS.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
I think this was a smart buy by US. I'll
be honest with you. I don't want to suck up
the bosses, but there's one or two things if I
ran a sports network that are under the radar that
I would spend money on. This is actually especially coming
in an Olympic year. This is a winter Olympic year.
People are into the patriotism. I think people will enjoy that.
I bet this does better than people think. I think

(22:16):
it's going to do well.

Speaker 6 (22:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
I mean, listen, you got the big names, right, Judge Otani,
You got Bryce, Bryce Harper, Yeah, Jamie.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Got Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping that
the herd Line news.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
It's interesting. We had Rick Patino on yesterday and he
was great and by gone Zaga's standards, even though they've
won I think twenty two or twenty three, they're twenty
eight and three, they're kind of under the radar for
Gonzaga standards. And Mark Few who has a pretty high
standard himself, two time National Coach of the Year. You know,
I had Patino on yesterday. He's a pretty good coach.

(22:53):
I'm not sure you heard of him. He's a pretty
good coach. And uh I asked him. I said, you know,
a lot of these guys get older and they get
out of the business, and I'm like, you're still firing away.
And he's like, listen, you got to adapt. He goes,
I've got guys from Ghana and Europe, he's got five continents,
and you still have amazing energy. And I think, knowing

(23:13):
you a little bit, I think one of the things
you're good is adaptability. So and Patino kind of laughed
at it. He was like, I got so many European players.
Give me if I said to you, over the last
three years, mark you've had to make You've had to
adapt with something with the nil and transfer port. What
is the one thing you've had to totally adapt to?

Speaker 8 (23:36):
Well, first of all, great job of kissing up to
the bosses and name dropping in the last you know,
forty five seconds, mission accomplished. Well, awesome question. Hard to
maybe say the one thing, you know? I would say
kind of the you know, as you know, following us

(23:57):
all these years, we red shirt guys and we I'm
in our program three four or five yep, years and
that was the standard, right and now kind of looking around,
I got a bunch of one year guys that are
either freshmen or transfers, and maybe a two year.

Speaker 10 (24:12):
Guy here and there.

Speaker 8 (24:12):
But yeah, just the general continuity in college basketball. And
that could be you know, also due to guys leaving
early for the NBA and all that. But that's been
the hardest thing, I think, is just always fighting for
your culture even though like you're looking around and like
you got to explain it to these guys, yeah, you know,
and they haven't experienced it yet.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
Yeah. You know, your front court scoring is big this year,
not as much in the back court. And when I
think of Gonzaga I kind of always think of balance
from the bench on. But it feels like to me,
a lot of your scoring this year is front court
instead of backcourt. Does that you know everybody talks about
guard playing the tournament. Does that concern you at all?

Speaker 10 (24:57):
Yeah, of course, yeah, yeah it does.

Speaker 8 (25:00):
And our backcourt play has been you know, spectacular.

Speaker 10 (25:04):
At times and then not so spectacular at times, and
so it does.

Speaker 8 (25:11):
But you know, I think back to your point about adaptability.
I think, you know, over the years, we've been front
core dominated, we've been backcourt dominated.

Speaker 10 (25:19):
We've been great balance dominated.

Speaker 8 (25:21):
If you think of that twenty one team, and you know,
this year we got a fantastic interior player and grahamy K.
We had two of them with Braydon Huff and grahamy K.
I think that probably Colin been the biggest story to
us this year. We've never faced the level of adversity
via injuries that we have this year. I mean, Braydon
Huff's the National Caliber Award guy and for him to

(25:44):
be out this long than we've lost Jalen Worley and.

Speaker 10 (25:46):
We even lost Ek for a while, yep. So it's
been really strange.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
Patino was saying yesterday with the NIL bringing kids from
Europe over that he doesn't remember college basketball being this
deep and strong. I watched Michigan last Friday play Illinois.
It's like an NBA. They're huge. You guys played them
and got kind of rolled. I mean, I don't sure

(26:11):
how you prepare for them. What did you make of
Michigan the odds on favorite.

Speaker 10 (26:16):
Well, they were terrific tonight we played them.

Speaker 8 (26:19):
They The one thing they did that night that I
think is they're just their slightest little hiccup in their
you know team, and it's not really even a hiccup.

Speaker 10 (26:29):
But they shot the ball extremely well.

Speaker 8 (26:32):
They shot the cover off against us, and Dust even
said so afterwards. But their size, you're so right, is
I mean, it's NBA level size quite frankly, with the
bodies and everything they're playing. You know, Luxembourg at the three,
you know, and he's probably six' nine to fifty or
something and great size around the, rim great, plan moved

(26:55):
the ball really. Well they were spectacular in transition back.
Then and, again you, know in that, game you're three
games and three. Days you don't really have a whole
lot of time to prepare for. Him the teams in
their league have starting to kind of game plan for
him a little.

Speaker 10 (27:08):
Bit they're.

Speaker 8 (27:09):
Good, tommy my old, Assistant Tommy lloyd's having a great
year At. Arizona they're, very very. Good there's some really
really nice teams out there for. You when we get totally,
HEALTHY i think we can compete with any of, them you.
Know but in the, MEANTIME i give this group a
lot of.

Speaker 10 (27:24):
Credit.

Speaker 8 (27:24):
Man we've just been hanging in there and winning, games
even though we've been down some pretty key.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Personnel by the, WAY i was thinking about you the
other day Because shryshewsky put you In. Beheim you, know
you guys were The olympic. Coaches you guys have Always
you And beheim are close And beeheim got a lot of.
Crap But i'll say this For. Beheim he Leaves. Syracuse
well what happened To syracuse? There AND i asked you
once About john Kla perry and you're, like, you, guys

(27:49):
he's a great. Coach it's funny that people get certain
labels in. Coaching and now all you college, GUYS i
think college feels a little more role with all the international.
Stuff has it changed you as a coach dealing sometimes
there's language. BARRIERS a lot of The european guys aren't
used To they're not as good, Defensively patino, said some

(28:11):
of these guys couldn't guard. Me has it changed you
as a?

Speaker 10 (28:14):
Coach?

Speaker 8 (28:18):
NO i, MEAN i THINK i hate to just you,
know as you, know just throw out stereotypes and. Generalize you,
Know Uh sabonis was a, fierce fierce uh tough as they. Come.
Uh you, know Guy ernowski, was you, know he made
his big impact on the defensive end as anybody might
even Been Defensive player of The year and that year
he should have. Been. Uh so you, know it's it's

(28:40):
it's it's uh an, individual the, INDIVIDUAL i would, say
having done and have all the great experiences WITH usa,
basketball the uh this this high turnover, rate uh to
what you, said the, adaptability the, boy you sure learn
from those, guys you know how to adapt with just you,
know know their rosters are always changing at THE nba,

(29:02):
level and guys are out and load managing and doing all. This,
oh that's really, HELPED i think and just maybe maybe
a little more patience and maybe understanding, that, hey you,
know we're not going to click like maybe our twenty.

Speaker 10 (29:18):
One team did or our nineteen team or.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
Whatever but you, know there's some things we do really
really well that are a little different maybe than some
of those. Teams we're a really really good defensive team this.
Year it's a little bit.

Speaker 1 (29:29):
Underrated THE nil has it made some players harder to?

Speaker 8 (29:35):
Coach you, KNOW i was really leary of that and
watching it really closely and my, experience, no you, KNOW
i mean it's just now, listen, man it's it is
a royal pain in the rear here when we hit
the off, season like you wouldn't, believe because literally we
have no. RULES i, mean you could sign with me

(29:58):
tomorrow and then you, know with somebody else a week from,
now and and so there's we literally have no rules right.
NOW i think that's the hardest, thing this roster. Building
but you know, what once like, practice once you get
into your, mode you have your team in the fall
and you start. PRACTICING i haven't noticed any difference along those.

(30:19):
Lines you, know there, Is colin though this there is
the difference.

Speaker 10 (30:23):
Of, uh.

Speaker 8 (30:27):
You, KNOW i mean you just you're not maybe quite
as hard on guys as you used to be back
in the, past challenging them and.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
Stuff, yeah because they can. Bail but you, KNOW i
mean you don't RECRUIT i, mean you don't recruit a
lot of high maintenance. GUYS i, mean, yeah you. Don't
you don't have. That it's not really YOUR i, mean
if you go To, gonzaga you got to leave your
ego at the. DOOR i, MEAN I i you, know, right, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 8 (30:50):
Hey and, LISTEN i now hope to go into shameless
self promotion of something. Here but we had we have
this wonderful documentary that just was done On Gunzaga, basketball
and they premiered it the other night AND i watched,
it and it brought home so many of these points
of what our program's all, about you, know and one
of it was that, was you, know we don't deal.

Speaker 10 (31:12):
With high, maintenance and.

Speaker 8 (31:15):
You know you're here to you, know there's a culture,
here and there's a family atmosphere, here there's a work
ethic here that's just, innate and everybody just kind of
buys into. It and it was great to have our
current guys sit through that thing and watch.

Speaker 10 (31:27):
It so many of, them you, know you think they know,
it but they.

Speaker 8 (31:32):
Don't AND i don't want to, bory but the best
STORY i got out that we have a Transfer ty
On Grant foster AND i, Said, ty what was the
biggest thing you took out of?

Speaker 11 (31:42):
That And he's, like Coach, MAN i couldn't believe That
Adam morrison was at the thing last, night you, Know
AND i was, Like, ty you, know he's our radio
guy and is at half our meals on the road
and walking around here and he's around the gym and he's,
LIKE i didn't even.

Speaker 12 (31:59):
Recognize you remembered him with long, hair the, mustache and
he had no.

Speaker 10 (32:04):
IDEA i don't.

Speaker 8 (32:06):
Know so sometimes it's good to be just reminded of
what this place has been all, about what it stands,
for and why we've.

Speaker 10 (32:13):
Kind of had the run we've.

Speaker 1 (32:14):
HAD i don't even know how old you. Are you're
in great shape and you're like you work out and
you bike. Everywhere how long are you going to do?

Speaker 5 (32:21):
This oh?

Speaker 8 (32:23):
Man as long as it's it's still you know, Something i'd,
say something that you enjoy and how can you not,
enjoy you, know being around athletics like, you you, know
like you, too you, know we're you get to talk about,
it around it all the, time.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
You.

Speaker 10 (32:37):
KNOW i would, say.

Speaker 8 (32:39):
As WHEN i quit feeling like maybe him having this
big impact on him and and not you, know helping
them grow as much as as you, Can i'd say
that would be that that's going to be the big
kind of flection point for.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
Me who's the best player you played this year in
the sport? Single best player you? Faced Oh?

Speaker 8 (32:58):
Man luxembourg was ter riff against. Us he hit the
first jump shot right in front of me and was
just PHYSICALLY i thought he was he was the. Best
we haven't you know teed it up against any of these.
Freshmen they're having some great. Years but you, know there's
some veterans out there that are having some great years

(33:18):
THAT i think are getting a little overlooked with all
this freshman.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
Hype, yeah, hey do You i'm not into this tournament.
EXPANSION i don't like. IT i don't even like the
first four nonsense start On, thursday sixty four. Teams i'm.
Good don't confuse my small. BRAIN i don't want. It
what do you make of what do you make of?
Expansion i'm with you on. IT i don't think it
needs to be watered down.

Speaker 8 (33:41):
Anymore AND i you, KNOW i don't want to dilute
the regular, season you, KNOW i want this last month
where people are are really sweating it and scratching to
get into this thing and make it something that's really
really prestigious.

Speaker 10 (33:57):
To just to get. Into to have your name called
on Selection.

Speaker 8 (34:00):
Sunday that's still a big thing to me to See
gonzaga pop up there on Selection.

Speaker 10 (34:04):
Sunday AND i, think you, know adding more is just
going to water it.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
Down his winning percentage is eighty three. Percent that's pretty.
Good oh you, See Kevin durant said he plans to
play in The olympics In Los. Angeles you KNOW kd pretty.
Well what was he like to?

Speaker 8 (34:23):
Coach, awesome this, awesome awesome, guy just a wonderful player
and just a great. Teammate he was so great as a.
Teammate and the the synergy between him And Anthony edwards
was just. Priceless Anthony, edwards you, know grew up idolizing THE.

(34:46):
Kd and and, uh they were kind of on the
floor together a lot with our our our one of our.
Groups and it was fun to watch Even ant kind
of defer to him a little bit and get such
great joy when he SAW kd jumper and just you
Know steph's threes and, uh you Know Louel sinders. Skyhook

(35:06):
Kevin durant's pull up man has to go down as
one of the most, legendary you, know iconic shots in
all of basketball. HISTORY i think it's about as automatic
as you can. Get.

Speaker 1 (35:18):
YEAH i, said if you take out centers and you
had an all time one on one, TOURNAMENT i would
TAKE kd to even BEAT, mj BECAUSE i don't THINK
mj could stop, him AND i don't THINK i don't
Think lebron could shoot with. HIM i THINK kd individually
is as good an offensive. Player i'm not talking about you,
KNOW i don't Want shack in my one on one
tournament or. Kareem but if you took all the other,

(35:38):
Players i've never seen a guy. Score maybe you have
because you coach pros and it looks so. Easy you
can give him the ball in the last second half
of the shot. Clock he gets an effortless.

Speaker 8 (35:49):
Jumper he can get it off on anybody anytime he.
Wants you, know you can get that shot off no
matter what defense you're. In but let's posterhor, say let's
not discount you, Know lebron in one on.

Speaker 10 (36:01):
One he's still got that, heart he still got that,
brain he's still got that.

Speaker 8 (36:05):
TOUGHNESS i wouldn't count him out on any sport where
you're keeping.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Score Mark Few gonzaga. Coach as, always you know it's
okay to suck up to your bosses once in a.
While you're a powerful. Coach you don't have to suck
up to YOUR A. D i'm still just trying to
get by here and get a, check all, right yeah?

Speaker 8 (36:24):
Right killing it in the ratings, thing demanding a move To,
chicago LIKE i, say you're doing okay for.

Speaker 10 (36:30):
Yourself, Hey i'm going to the state tournament today In.
Washington you remember those?

Speaker 1 (36:37):
Days where is it At? St mary's your PS T,
Comodome Ta.

Speaker 8 (36:41):
Comodome so, YEAH i figured you'd remember those days back
when the old stalking.

Speaker 1 (36:47):
Grounds oh, yeah, Boy i'd get on a. Heater you
couldn't stop, me that's for. SURE a little crossover pull
up couldn't stop. Me, right that's. Right good seeing, You, Mark.

Speaker 10 (36:58):
Yeah you, too call?

Speaker 6 (36:59):
Him?

Speaker 4 (37:00):
UH i?

Speaker 1 (37:00):
Remember, yeah The Tacoma dome that WHEN i was really,
young there was there was No Tacoma.

Speaker 13 (37:05):
Dome it was The.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
Kingdome then they built The Tacoma dome and they put
all the high school state championships in. There, okay it
is a done. Deal The bills deal is a done. Deal.
Whooee bears got a second and a. Fifth bear's got
a second round pick OFF Dj. Moore, wow a second

(37:28):
and a. Fifth so The bears now hold, on hold?

Speaker 3 (37:33):
On oh WELL Dj moore and if, YEAH dj moren't,
here The bills are sending a twenty twenty six second
round pick to The.

Speaker 1 (37:49):
Bears, okay so Basically chicago's going to have a first
and two seconds and the. Third that's the, key the
four top for The. BEARS i, Mean, colin there is
a horrible deal for The. Bills what happened to mid round?
COMPENSATION a second round pick FOR Dj?

Speaker 6 (38:07):
Moore what does that?

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Mean Aj brownsworth a first. Stunned i'm. Stunned holy, cow
that's a lot FOR Dj.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Moore so The bills GOT Dj moore and a fifth round. Pick,
yeah and The bears.

Speaker 6 (38:20):
Got a second round pick FOR Dj moore who had
six hundred yards and six.

Speaker 3 (38:23):
Touchdowns, well he's a good, receiver but a second round
pick that seems really. Rich, Colin holy, COW i don't.

Speaker 6 (38:32):
Know a second round pick that's huge. Value you could
get receivers.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Down IF i said had eight hundred and fifty, yards
remember he had his best year Under brady down In.
Carolina IF i SAID Dj moore had eight hundred and
fifty yards and six, touchdowns you'd be, Like, okay second
round pick who hit about fifty seven percent of the,
time sixty percent of the. Time THAT'S i don't. KNOW i, mean,
LISTEN i, LIKE i like proven st ours who don't miss.

(39:01):
Games that's, fair THAT'S Dj. Moore he hasn't missed a
start in.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
Forever does this speak to a desperation level that The
bears would give up a second round pick For?

Speaker 6 (39:09):
Djails we give up a second round pick FOR Dj.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Moore i' wouldn't say, desperation it's a.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Need, well they clearly didn't have THEM o FOR Aj,
brown so they're, like all, right well we'll go FOR Dj.

Speaker 1 (39:19):
Moore who In, chicago it's The.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
Herd be sure to catch live editions Of The herd
weekdays and Noon easter not A empacific.

Speaker 1 (39:39):
Welcome in hour. Two it is A. Thursday this is.
Interesting so Yesterday Aaron rodgers spoke for the first time
McAfee show since like the season, ended AND i Defended
Aaron rodgers all. YEAR i said a lot a lot
of people were punishing him LIKE pff because he wasn't
rolling the ball down the field That i'm they have one.

(40:00):
Receiver so, yesterday he's still unclear if he's coming back To.
Pittsburgh BUT i will, say if you had AN nfl
quarterback draft today with everybody in the league and it
was based on the next three to four, years, Yeah
aaron's not top. Twenty if you had a quarterback draft
for next, year Only Aaron rodgers would make my top.

(40:23):
Ten and you think that's. Crazy but The steelers were a,
broken dysfunctional. Offense they went from twenty third in sacks to.
Ninth they went from tenth to giveaways to. Fourth red
zone was almost dead last in the. League to top
eleven yards after the, catch they were. First they averaged
more yards per play Than Liam, Cohen Trevor lawrence and The,

(40:45):
jags and they averaged more points than The philadelphia Stacked.
Eagles so to, ME i Thought aaron had a great.
Year it was a completely broken. Ecosystem, offensively they didn't
turn it, all they didn't have, penalties they were good
in the red, zone they were good after the. Catch That's.
Aaron what else? Changed it Was? Aaron SO i think,

(41:09):
again if you're talking one, YEAR i think he's a
top ten. Quarterback matt Hassel back On aaron potentially coming.

Speaker 13 (41:16):
BACK i think he wants to play, football but with
a caveat only somewhere that plays in his, offense with
his verbiage someone that, AGE i lived.

Speaker 10 (41:26):
It you don't want to.

Speaker 13 (41:27):
Try to learn a new. Language you don't you like
if it's if it's In pittsburgh With mike McCarthy or
someone that runs that same. Offense, yes if it's, not then,
no he doesn't want to get in the huddle and
have to think about red, left swap tight, CLOTHS z,
right spring, right G u, corner half back flat on
one ready break.

Speaker 10 (41:44):
Like he doesn't want to do. That he doesn't want
to wear a.

Speaker 13 (41:45):
Wristband he wants to own the, offense and so it's
got to be in that kind of a system for
him to come.

Speaker 1 (41:51):
Back in my, mind, YEAH i you, know for seventeen,
GAMES i would Take aaron over, all but about eight
guys in the, league and most of those GUYS i
would take because they're a little younger and a little more.
Athletic but go look at what The steelers, were and
just by Adding, aaron look what they, became like a functional.

(42:13):
Offense now they Have mike, McCarthy SO i have like
an adult offensive, Coach Dak cooper Rush. AARON i honestly
think With baltimore right now In cincinnati's, Ridiculousness i'm not
so SURE i wouldn't Have aaron In pittsburgh winning the
division with. McCarthy i REALLY i, mean say what you
want this head. Coach they've already got the staff laid.

(42:37):
Out you, know McCarthy has always been good at. Elevating
they have to go get a number two wide. Receiver
BUT i think he's coming. Back and with, that here's breaking.
News schalm's just Reported Jason, tatum just ten months after
surgery for a ruptured Achilles Jason tatum will. Play he's

(43:00):
making his debut is at tomorrow against The Dallas, mavericks
JOINING Us. Live Jason, temph host Of Hoops tonight at The,
volume had them on a couple of weeks. Ago got great.
Feedback all. Right SO i always say this when it
comes to young athletes in their, prime they always heal.
Faster they always show up three months. Before, okay so

(43:23):
The knicks have been playing. Well we worry about their.
Defense The pistons are, good but you know their half guard,
offense there's a ceiling on. It tatum to The. Celtics
are they the best team now in The?

Speaker 5 (43:36):
East?

Speaker 1 (43:36):
Potentially you, know there's this thing with.

Speaker 12 (43:39):
Culture this season For boston has been a testament to
their culture and just how strong it. Is but then
what happens is you run into really good basketball teams
and culture can only take you so. Far you need
really good, players Right and last night The celtics ran
into A Charlotte hornet's team that is sixteen and three
in their.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
Last Nineteen yames fires for each other.

Speaker 12 (43:59):
Team, yeah conversation for another, day but that is an
incredible basketball team they're building out there In. Charlotte but
The celtics got their butt, kicks and there were a
couple of specific reasons. Why but one of the big
reasons why is that their centers really really struggled to
guard and pick and roll and they were just getting
absolutely fried by everybody from The. Hornets and the big
difference between last year's center rotation and this year's center

(44:21):
rotation is, one you don't Have Al, horford a guy
who has more scheme versatility he can.

Speaker 1 (44:25):
Switch but.

Speaker 10 (44:25):
Two guess who guarded centers for the most part last
Year Jason.

Speaker 12 (44:29):
Tatum Jason tatum's ability to guard centers gave The celtics
the ability to switch most ball screens and it was
one of the primary driving forces behind them winning the,
title most famously breaking That dallas offense by Putting tatum
on centers and switching all of those ball screens and so,
again it's all fun in. Games this has been a
very impressive season For, boston but they Need Jason. Tatum

(44:51):
he unlocks their defensive. Versatility Jalen brown on, offense he's
had a very good, season but he's shown some susceptibility
to certain types of. Looks he specifically struggled against deep,
drop which is something That charlotte did a bunch to
them last. Night Jason tatum gives you another guy who
can kind of alleviate that burden On Jalen, brown and,
Specifically Jason tatum is a much better, passer and it's something,

(45:14):
that as we talked, about it'll be a little clunky
at first implementing him into this, offense but ultimately you
will make them more versatile on both ends of the
floor and make them a much better team against the
best competition around the.

Speaker 1 (45:25):
League All, RIGHT i watched every second of The nicks
hammering The. Spurs they had every they missed a couple
of late three, pointers they could have BEATEN okc last.
Night so you, know and you know, This. Jason regular
season is different when you can play a team four
or five times in a row and hunt their defensive.
Weakness maybe The knicks aren't built for. That, maybe BUT

(45:46):
i will say we worried About. Tibbs, oh Here's Mike,
brown their bench, scoring THEIR i MEAN i said this here.
Day you could be a casual Fan brunson and cas
and og And Josh hart And Michale. Bridges they got
a nice. ROTATION i, mean do you buy this current.

Speaker 12 (46:06):
Streak you know what's, FUNNY i told you this last
a couple of weeks. AGO i believe in this team
more THAN i do recent versions of The knicks because
they're better at some specific. Things Mike brown in. Particular
one of the biggest things he's emphasized is early dribble.
Penetration The knicks generate the second most spot up opportunities
in the ENTIRE nba this. Season last year they were

(46:27):
middle of the. Pack so spot ups in the half,
court that's just a guy standing open on the. Perimeter
that's where you get a lot of your best offense
in the half. Court they are running better, offense they're
playing better, defense but my concern was the rest of
the league had gotten. Better what's actually gotten me to
buy into The, Knicks collin is their matchups against some
of these better teams in the. League they match up
really well with The San Antonio, SPURS, yep and The

(46:50):
San Antonio spurs match up really well with The, Thunder
and so it's really easy for me to sit here
and be, like, oh DO i think The knicks can
beat The thunder in the?

Speaker 10 (46:56):
Series, NO i.

Speaker 12 (46:57):
DON'T i don't Think brunson can go blow for blow
WITH i don't think they have close to the defensive.
Versatility there's all sorts of issues that would go south
For New york in that type of. Matchup but they
can absolutely beat all these teams in The. East there's
not a team out there in The east that looks
unbeatable or that can present the types of challenges That
Oklahoma city can present if they can somehow get out

(47:18):
of the. Conference San antonio has Had Oklahoma city's number all,
season And San antonio to me, like there's a lot
of things with, them some numbers and some specifics with
them that are causing me to recalibrate HOW i view
them compared to other young. Teams but if The spurs
come out of The west and The knicks come out
of The, east The knicks have had their number this.
Year their bigger wings have been able to Guard San antonio's.

(47:39):
Guards they've been physical With, Wemby brunson's outplay deer And.
Fox they look really good in that. Matchup and so
AS i was looking at That knicks game against The
spurs last, WEEK i was, Like, man if things break,
right This knicks team absolutely could win the title this.

Speaker 1 (47:51):
Year all, Right so everybody bangs ON sga and my
take is he doesn't Have lebron size and. Verticality you,
know he didn't Have jay's, Length so you do what you.
Do it's like most of the great route runners IN
nfl history at receiver are not huge and are not.
BURNERS jsn is a great route runner because he has

(48:12):
to be a great route. Runner AND i look AT,
Sgn i'm, like he's six six and a buck ninety.
Four he's got to. MANIPULATE i don't think the refs
he's currying favor with the. REFS i think it's. Difficult
AND i do think he's thin and you can bump
him off his spot and they're gonna blow the. Whistle,
Also jordan had twelve free throws a game one. Year
Crickets kd's done ten plus crickets three Times kobe ten,

(48:36):
plus but their games are way more fun to, watch
so nobody. Complains is part of this is that his
game's no fun to.

Speaker 12 (48:43):
Watch so this is complicated BECAUSE i do think that
the foulgrifting thing is a. Problem, Like i'm, sorry but
when we're watching a big NATIONAL tv game And shay
drives Into kat and just throws up SOME bs shot
that he would never take unless he was trying to draw,
FOUL i do think that's a bad television. PRODUCT i
just think that's a league wide issue AND i can't
really get On shay about it When luca does the

(49:04):
same thing And Jalen brunson does the same, thing and,
man Even jokic has been flopping so much as of.
Late like it's just a league wide. Problem SO i
don't really see the point in Targeting shay specifically because
he's not the only guy that's doing it. Now the
stuff about him being A tv kind of like a
draw for. Fans to, me it comes down to that
exact concept you're talking. About footwork is fascinating to a

(49:26):
football like to a huge football, fan right or a
guy who played or something along those. Lines for a
guy like, me a basketball nut job LIKE i have
an incredible appreciation For shay's, footwork his like bizarre slinky,
athleticism his shot making ability in the mid, range like
those are things THAT i. Like but for the, masses
for the casual, fans he doesn't get the crazy dunks Like.

(49:49):
Lebron he doesn't go on these insane shooting displays Like Steph.
Curry his offense as a team isn't like the incredible passing,
fueled fluid team offense you see from Like jokic or
the insane physical feats Of. Wemby SO i think, honestly With,
shay he just struggles to resonate with the masses because
most of his appeal is to more of the refined

(50:09):
basketball side rather than the obvious basketball.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
Side, okay SO i have said this, before is that you,
know with the, nil if one of these powers Like
Notre dame Or georgia Or texas a player transfers, out
it's mostly Because texas Or Notre dame Er georgia don't
hold him in high. Regard you're not taking the Best
georgia football player From. Georgia if he's great they're going

(50:33):
to keep him in. House AND i feel the same
way about guys that get. Traded harden's a great, player,
right been traded several. Times why because the eventually the
truth comes. Out your game is your, Game Anthony. Davis,
now let's be. Honest after they win THE covid, title
shows up out of shape the next, year the honeymoon
was over the minute he showed up the camp out
of shape To, lebron who's obsessed with being in. Shape

(50:55):
SO i Love, luca but the truth was he'd been
hurting back to back. Years i've always said there's A
carmelo component here where he's not in great. Shape he
doesn't really contribute. Defensively are you, surprised, however in the
last two weeks that it's the first time ever there's
been a lot of criticism With luca some of a roster.

(51:17):
Construction this is not it's too much. Duplication but have
you been surprised by the? Criticism, NO i.

Speaker 12 (51:23):
Think a lot of it is. Fair you got to,
remember when we're talking about guys at this echelon of the,
league we're not comparing you to the seventh or eighth
best player in the. League we're comparing you To Nicole
jokich To Shake Kiodus. Alexander we're talking about a special
caliber of player, here and so you can get a
little bit more. Nitpicky the main Thing i've noticed With
luca is that his floor is just a lot lower

(51:44):
than those. GUYS i firmly believe that When luca's got
his step back three, going he's like the best player
in the world because he brings the crazy efficiency math
problem That steph presents with like the size and position Of,
jokics but also with the mid range proficiency Of. Shay
he brings it all to the table and it shows
in the numbers because when he, scores they're super, effective

(52:06):
but when he fails to knock those shots, down he
just struggles to impact the game in other. Ways here
coming Crazy Statsbury, Colin The lakers are just four and
seven this. Year When luca scores twenty five or fewer,
points they are twenty seven and. Eleven when he scores
over twenty, five they are nineteen and. Six when he
makes at least four, threes they're twelve and twelve when
he makes fewer than four. Threes so so much comes

(52:27):
down to him knocking down that step back. Three and
one of the things With luca is it used to
be when he didn't have his jump shot, going he
could get to the rim and that would drive all
of these other parts of his game. Colin his ability
gets to the rim is consistently declining year over year
twenty twenty three With dallas six point one rim attempts per,
game twenty twenty four With dallas, five twenty twenty, five

(52:52):
four point, four twenty twenty six with The lakers three point.
Five so we have a consistent year over year decline
in his ability to get to the, rim and so
as a result of, that he's not able to bring
another element to his game when his jump shots not.
Falling he's not a very good defensive. Player he's hard
to protect on defense. Too teams have coverages to protect

(53:15):
guards that can't, defend But luca is so slow that
they basically have to switch with, him which makes him
an easy. Target and so really it's not so much
about what lucas capable, of it's about what he looks
like when things aren't going his. Way with that jump,
shot his floor is, lower and it just makes them
more complicated to build.

Speaker 1 (53:31):
Around are you surprised That lebron And luca on the
floor together don't, work Because lebron generally works with, everybody
SO i think it's.

Speaker 12 (53:39):
COMPLICATED i, think first of, all they are starting to play.
Better The big three have started to find some footing
on offense over the course of the last couple of.
WEEKS i think the biggest reason why it hasn't worked
Is lebron is just having a brutal jump shooting. Season
this is Something i've learned a lot from THE nba
over the last few. Years if you want to partner
multiple stars, together there needs to be a jump shooting.

(54:01):
Element guys need to be able to shoot because that's
the only thing that allows them to stay involved and
to have utility when they don't have the. Basketball and
what's so weird Is lebron had been an awesome catch
and shoot player the last couple of, years in the
mid forty percent from three the previous two, seasons But
lebron's been having a bad jump shooting, season so as a,
result he hasn't had as much off ball. Utility The

(54:21):
lebron groups that have been best has been when he's by.
Himself they've been some of The lakers' best, groups or
when he's by himself because he's on the ball and
he's primarily operating in transition and the offense is flowing around,
him and so his catch and shoot jump shots not as.
Important but, ultimately with this, team you've got two guys
In luca And lebron in, particular that are not great
catch and shoot, players and that makes them really difficult

(54:44):
to play alongside each.

Speaker 1 (54:45):
Other it's Called Hoops. Tonight it's a podcast at The
volume as, Always, buddy great seeing, you appreciate.

Speaker 10 (54:50):
It good to see.

Speaker 4 (54:50):
You.

Speaker 1 (54:51):
Colin jason timp does a remarkable job at The volume
for several. Years love bringing him on the. Show John
middlekoff as. Well, YEAH i Mean. John lebron's jump shot
has always been to ME J, mack it's always been
hit and. Miss he has stretches AND i but the
thing With lebron in his prime is when the jump
shot wasn't, landing he just beat guys off the dribble
and score at the. Rim so that's Why lebron's always

(55:13):
loved playing with like a guy like A Kevin love
or A Chris, bosh a big who can move outside
and take the big with. Him so If lebron's jumper's not,
hitting he can drive and score at the. RIM i,
Mean Roy hibbert gave him trouble for, years you, know
In miami when they would Play, indiana Because lebron doesn't
want A he doesn't want the bigs around the. Rim
So bosh And Kevin love were two of his Favorite

(55:35):
Big Anthony, davis by the, Way lebron didn't want him
hanging around the. Rim he wanted him. Out the problem
WAS a d didn't want to be outside shooting. Threes
he liked to be closer to the rim and. Score
and so, YEAH i, Mean lebron's jumper's always been hot and.
Cold for menover, forty it. Matters it's not just about.
Effort you're still. Disciplined you didn't become. Lazy your biology.
