Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowherd
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Here we go. It is a fiery Friday on the herd. Yes,
Colin Cowherd is out. Very rare day off for him
during the football season. He's got a big family thing
to attend. And it's me, Jason McIntyre, in for Colin Cowherd.
I am joined by Rachel Nichols. We have so many
(00:50):
good NFL stories on a Friday. Rachel and I are
used to, you know, summer duty where we're making things happen,
concocting stories.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Rachel, we got so much to offer today.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
I know you're fired up after a pretty great Thursday
night in sports.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
We're talking about how good this football season has been
so far on the way up here.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
With the producers. But I got to tell you, we're going.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
To sneak a little Dodgers in later in the show
because the playoffs this weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
I am so hyped.
Speaker 6 (01:15):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Well, you're going to have to dress appropriately because it's
going to be hot.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Out here in L.A., very exciting weekend in sports. We
got to start with what happened Thursday night in Believe Land, folks.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yes, in Cleveland, it was a crazy game.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
The Browns shocked the Steelers and the Pittsburgh Steelers become unraveled. Folks, listen,
the big storyline coming into this one was, oh, Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
He's reborn. See what he did last week against the Bengals?
He's back.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
The Steelers are good. They're going back to the playoffs.
And then the vibes fell apart last night in the
dog pound. Folks, Aaron Rodgers melting down at his coach.
You had TJ Watt sounding off. The Steelers lose 27-24
on a last-second field goal. We'll get to the Browns
in a moment. Third straight stirring win for Cleveland. But
(02:07):
the storyline here is Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy going
at it. Folks, when your quarterback is F-bombing your head coach.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
midway through the.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
First quarter of a scoreless game, as you see on
TV here, Aaron Rodgers unhappy, the play call's not getting in,
huffing and puffing like an eight-year-old because he didn't get
his dessert. Folks, this was ugly. I mean, I don't
know what people expected, okay? We saw this show Eight
years ago in Green Bay, when Rodgers and McCarthy fell apart,
(02:39):
it was ugly.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
The stories were all over the media about how they
did not get along.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
I mean, essentially, Aaron Rodgers would roll his eyes at
play calls coming in from McCarthy and Green Bay, and
then he would change the plays at the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
It got so bad in that final.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Year, McCarthy basically just decided, you know what, I'm going
to get massages during team meetings. Rodgers, you don't want
to listen to me. You can just run them anyway.
You run the show anyway, because it's going to be
your call. And eight years later, everybody thought it was
going to be different. And so you got Mike Tomlin out,
a respected coach in Tomlin. There was no way Aaron
Rodgers was going to dog cuss him on national TV
(03:17):
in primetime. Now, he would do that to his OC,
Arthur Smith, last year because that's what Rodgers is. You know,
he's just a petulant quarterback who's aging and not as
good as he used to be. And he's a fiery guy,
and I get it. But, folks, this is unacceptable behavior
from your quarterback. cursing at your coach in the first
quarter and of course mccarthy the cameras cut to him
(03:37):
and he calls him a bleeping you know what you
can read lips now afterward it was interesting because mccarthy
owned it and you can guess what aaron rogers said
here's mccarthy after the loss to the browns.
Speaker 7 (03:48):
Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words but
everybody's competing on the field and i think you know
um but said on the field The way I grew
up in this game, you know, usually stays on the field.
That's not the case today. I understand that. But yeah,
any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn't
(04:10):
use those words. I have to look at the film,
but I don't think it was, yeah, it wasn't our
cleanest game all the way around.
Speaker 8 (04:18):
They're a good defense, so you got to give them credit.
It was loud. It was definitely a good crowd tonight.
It was loud. So some of the calls, it was
hard to hear for sure.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I don't want to be body language guy, but Mike
McCarthy standing up straight, looking people in the eye. Aaron Rodgers,
head down, looking at the podium, looking in the sky,
doesn't want to.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Make eye contact. He's embarrassed. You know this, guys.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Anybody with kids knows, like, this is, you know, childish
behavior from Aaron Rodgers. But this is par for the course, right?
I mean, we're four games into the season. The Steelers
don't know what they want to be. I mean, their
best player, I think you would agree, is Jalen Warren.
Kid was awesome last week against the Bengals. Dynamic running back.
Catches all the dump balls from Rodgers because, you know,
(05:02):
Rodgers can't move in the pocket.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
I mean, look at him.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
He got sacked five times. And this is against a
Browns team that traded away Myles Garrett. Mason Graham, their
best interior defensive lineman, he leaves the game injured. And look,
Rodgers coming off the field, cursing at McCarthy more. Folks,
this is embarrassing. Rodgers, it's like he's trying to prove
a point. Hey, man, I can be the old guy.
(05:25):
Just give me what I need. Okay, Aaron, we'll give
you a DK Metcalf last year. And then we'll give
you Michael Pittman this year. By the way, did you
see last week? Rodgers ticked off at Pittman and was
saying this guy can't bleep and catch. Like, I'm telling you,
it's falling apart for the Steelers. Now, the schedule is fortuitous,
so they will win some games. But I just want
to remind some people, this is what you did when
(05:48):
you decided to bring back Rodgers. If we're being honest
with ourselves, Steelers fans know they got lucky.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
You got lucky to make the playoffs last year.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Tyler Luke misses a chip shot 44 yarder in week
18 or you're not in the playoffs. And then you
get to the postseason. You face the Texans. You get smashed.
I mean, just buried at home in an embarrassing performance.
And Rodgers, I don't want to go out with a
pick six as my final pass.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
I'm coming back.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
And so Rodgers wants to throw all these deep balls.
And yet he's still 32nd in the league in yards
per attempt because none of the deep balls are connecting. Now,
he had a couple nice throws there coming back in
the fourth quarter, down 11, sure. But I think the
bigger story is the meltdown. Folks, we haven't even gotten
into this Joey Porter stuff.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
You got a veteran team. They don't want to rebuild.
The smart move was to rebuild. They don't want to
do that.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
You know, the Joey Porter trait to me is a
sign like, hey, we're building for the future. And then
you see Cam Hayward ticked off on the sideline. You
see TJ Watt. Give me the damn headset. I want
to yell at Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator. Folks, we're
in week four for Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
This is not good. The vibes, they're bad in Pittsburgh. Listen,
I'll be real.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
One of our staffers said, you know, you know, the
that one of the nicknames for Pittsburgh is the city
of bridges because of all the waterways.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
I believe they have the most bridges of any city
in the world.
Speaker 8 (07:14):
Well, here we are.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
First week in October.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
And Aaron Rodgers is well on his way to burning
all those bridges in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Now let's move to a positive story and the Cleveland Browns.
How about that?
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Listen, anybody have three and one for the Browns after
four games? Folks, do you remember how ugly it was
in the preseason? Rachel and I would be talking about, oh, well,
Deshaun Watson, he's not going to make it. He's getting
booed by the home crowd. And then Watson's firing back.
What do they expect, 400 yards from me? I mean,
it was comedy. It's Todd Munkin. I'm making fun of
(07:48):
his voice. He sounds like he's losing his mind in
the preseason. And then in week one, they're down 24-0
at the half to Jacksonville. It looks like a total abomination.
Tank for Arch Manning, blah, blah, blah. Folks, three straight games,
three straight Deshaun Watson game-winning drives in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Now, listen, I get it. You know, it's Tampa Bay.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
OK, these are not super impressive victories. But if we're
being honest, given the expectations for for Cleveland, I'm impressed. Now,
I don't know if this is you could continue this
because let's be real. Watson was great in the first half.
You could argue it was his best half since leaving
the Texans. Second half, he came back to reality. You know,
(08:36):
he had two fumbles, lost one. He had the pick.
I think he was sacked twice. They nearly blew the game.
But when it mattered most, look at Watson winning with
his legs on the ground. And there's a lot to
clean up if you're a Cleveland Browns fan. I think
they had 14 penalties last night. They lead the NFL
in penalties. And Watson's bailed them out here. Here's Todd Munkin. Yes,
(08:59):
Todd Munkin, first-time NFL head coach on the win last
night over Pittsburgh.
Speaker 8 (09:05):
We've only got three wins, right?
Speaker 9 (09:09):
But I've said this all along, like, if you'd have
gotten me at 45, you wouldn't have gotten the best
version of me.
Speaker 8 (09:17):
I feel like I still got juice. I still feel
like I go to practice and get after our guys.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
But it's still only three.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
So besides the contrasting vibes between the Steelers and the.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Browns, Like you could see the Browns sideline. Everybody loves
each other.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
They're very excited. The locker room afterward, I watched a
video where Munkin handed the game ball to the kicker.
Didn't have much else to say. Hands a game ball
to Deshaun Watson. Everybody's silent waiting for this big speech.
And Munkin's like, I'll see you guys Tuesday. He gave
the team a bunch of days off and they earned it.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a Browns team that had
(09:55):
a win total of five and a half.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
They got three wins already.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Nobody had this and honestly they are building this the
right way we we just talked about how Pittsburgh didn't
want to rebuild let's put in Aaron Rodgers let's go
get Metcalf let's get Pittman we can we can do
something on the fly we can contend that's just delusional
teams in front offices Cleveland is building the right way.
Look at their last two drafts. I mean, they're throwing
(10:23):
Watson to Boston, the young receiver. Concepcion, fan in the
tight end, is terrific. Judkins is a good running back.
The left tackle, Faneu, is playing great. Graham, before he
was injured, they've got a great young nucleus. Like the
Browns are building things the right way. This is how
you put stuff together. Again, I don't think this is sustainable.
(10:46):
I don't think they'll make the playoffs. My guess is
it will be the Ravens and Bengals in that division.
That being said, you got to be impressed with Cleveland.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
And guess what?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
You get extra time off before you face my Jets
next week.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
We know the Jets ain't great. They got a bunch
of injuries.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
And you could be looking at a 4-1 Cleveland Browns
team heading into the a huge showdown on Fox in
week six in the Dog Pound against Lamar Jackson. Folks,
this is a fun Cleveland Browns story. Congrats to Todd Munkin.
I was way wrong about him.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
Here we are four weeks into the season. And Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I know you guys remember this, but when the things
were not going well in the preseason, all the talk was, oh, oh,
Shador is the better quarterback.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
He's maybe the future.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
You know, he'll probably start week three after Watson vomits
all over himself in the first two weeks.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Nobody's talking about Shador Sanders, folks. Nobody.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Because Munkin and Watson are delivering victories for the surprising
3-1 kings of the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
What a story. All right, we have a tremendous show
coming up next.
Speaker 8 (11:59):
Oh, boy.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Colin's out so I can talk about my main man,
Brock Purdy.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Wait till you hear the latest on the superstar seventh
round pick.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
That's next here on The Herd.
Speaker 2 (12:12):

a week, every Monday, every single Friday throughout the college
football season. You can expect a little bit of this.
Will Stein, the head.
Speaker 8 (12:34):
Coach at Kentucky, joins us.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
Open bar at a wedding, ordering a Shirley Temple.
Speaker 8 (12:38):
Will or will not?
Speaker 4 (12:39):
No.
Speaker 8 (12:42):
Will not. Ketchup on steak. Will or will not? Will not.
Thank you. A little bit of this.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Rhys Davis, host of College Game Day, is with us now.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
And then I'm going home to the BBC, and they're
saying Jockovich instead of Jokovich.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Right, because you can't say Jockovich.
Speaker 10 (12:59):
If you do, you know the blowback you're going to
get from the American audience.
Speaker 8 (13:02):
Right.
Speaker 7 (13:02):
And a whole lot of this.
Speaker 10 (13:09):
Listen to college football with Stugatz and the Bear on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Back here on The Herd. Fun Thursday night in sports.
Huge Saturday ahead in baseball. All four playoff series in action.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Got some college football schedules.
Speaker 8 (13:36):
Pretty good.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
Be careful, Alabama, this weekend.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
And then Sunday, a monster NFL slate. And we've talked
about this game a little bit this week. This San
Francisco showdown against the Denver Broncos. The 49ers are off
to an unbelievable start this season, folks. Brock Purdy now
has risen to second in the MVP odds.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
I know it's early. We're a month in. Purdy had
made a run earlier.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
A few years back where he was in the mix
till a dreadful, I think it was a five interception
performance in primetime, I believe against Lamar Jackson. But if
you look at the MVP odds, Josh Allen, the obvious favorite,
he's been incredible, but Purdy has surpassed Lamar, Mahomes and
Burrow because the Niners are on top of the league.
And I was thinking about Purdy, reading some articles and
(14:24):
it's interesting. There's a lot of people out there who
just continue to doubt Rock Purdy. Well, you know, He
was the last pick in the draft. Well, he's only 6'1. Like,
what's his awesome trait?
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Processing?
Speaker 7 (14:37):
Like, come on.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
What is that?
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Like, there's a lot of Brock Purdy doubters out there. Well,
he's got Kyle Shanahan.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
What do you expect? You know, he's got McCaffrey and
Kittle and Mike Evans now.
Speaker 8 (14:48):
Like, come on.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
He's got a loaded deck. All this stuff is nonsense.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
And I settled on that Purdy is kind of, he's
been typecast, right? I'll never forget reading this incredible story
about Bradley Cooper, the great actor who was an.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Awesome bit player in a bunch of movies.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
I think Wedding Crashers is one of my top 15
movies that I've ever seen in comedy.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
And Bradley Cooper is excellent in Wedding Crashers. Small bit,
bit role, right? He's good in, he's just not that
into you. Not bad.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
I'm into some rom-coms, not gonna lie. He's in an ensemble,
The Hangover. He wasn't like the guy. You're not selling him.
You're selling the story. American Sniper. He was great.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
War movie. I love that movie.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
And Bradley Cooper had to eventually sell movie executives that
he was the guy to produce and also star in
the movie with Lady Gaga, A Star is Born. And
it was a tough sell, but Bradley Cooper explained selling
it to the executives who never saw him as a
leading guy. He gets that leading role. He's nominated for
(15:53):
an Academy Award. Boom, he's stamped now.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
That's a guy. That's an alpha. You can build movies
around him.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
And I feel like Brock Purdy is up against that
in the NFL. Nobody wants to give him the credit. Well, oh,
he had a good game and they're just waiting for
a loss and then to blame Brock Purdy. But if
you look around the league, we have Greg Cosell on
every week. He's consistently trying to tell Colin, Hey, Brock
(16:20):
Purdy's in that elite group of quarterbacks with Burrow, with Lamar,
with Mahomes and Allen.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
He's there.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Like if you listen, Cosell's telling Colin and Colin still,
I don't buy it. And then if you listen to
Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback in the history of the sport,
six round.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
Pick, Tom Brady raves about Purdy and he's on record.
He's a tier one quarterback.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
I mean, Daniel Jeremiah, the top draft guy, excellent voice
when it comes to breaking down quarterbacks, a former quarterback himself.
He raves about Purdy and says how he's an elite quarterback.
This week, Sean Payton, who is facing Brock Purdy, really
gassed up the young quarterback. Here's what Sean Payton had
to say about Brock Purdy.
Speaker 11 (17:04):
He's playing, you know, at a real high level, very decisive.
You never feel like he's through his progressions fast. Kyle
and those guys have done a great job. Whether he's
under center or in the gun, the mix of run,
play pass, and drop back is impressive. You see in
(17:26):
three weeks, not only no sacks, first and third down,
first in red zone. Very efficient. He's making all the throws.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
Listen, Purdy's been my guy for a few years.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
I love everything about him, but he's not going to
go to the combine and stand out.
Speaker 8 (17:45):
Right.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
When he was at Iowa State, he was really good
for the first couple of years of Matt Campbell. And
there was talk about the NFL. Then he backslid a
little bit and ended up staying four years. So he
goes to the combine where it's the Underwear Olympics. They're
looking for big, strong. How many how many bench presses
can you put up? What's your 40 time? He's not
going to excel at any of that stuff. And so
(18:06):
that's why people are drafting these. Oh, well, Joe Milton
has a huge arm and people are obsessed with strength
and height. And it's like, that's not what makes a quarterback, folks.
Brock Purdy is what you want as your franchise guy.
Kyle Shanahan identified it early to the surprise of everyone
is like that. That's our best quarterback on the roster.
(18:27):
And now you've got him second in NFL MVP odds.
And I will point out to some people who want
to say he's got a stacked deck. They're losing wide
receivers left and right, and people haven't really noticed this,
and I'm not knocking him, but Christian McCaffrey's lost a step,
and they know that because they're force-feeding the backup each
week to save McCaffrey's legs. He doesn't have one explosive
(18:47):
carry through three weeks. Christian McCaffrey, one of the best,
most dynamic backs in the league. Not one carry over
20 yards. I think he's 23rd in yardage. And he
only has like 35 carries on the season because they
know like, hey, we, A, we have to save him.
And B, he's not what he was two years ago.
So all this, oh, the Niners are stacked. Now, you
know what this means. I'm hyping the hell out of Purdy.
(19:09):
He's my guy.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
I got him in a fantasy league.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
He's probably going to struggle against Denver injury reports today.
We're waiting on Mike Evans, waiting on green law, waiting
on Trent Williams. And yes, I can hear you responding.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
We'll see. You got to wait to hear about these
guys before you know about.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
No, no.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Purdy's my guy. I believe in Brock Purdy. He doesn't
look the part. He's not your alpha quarterback. Who's going
to come out with his chest puffing. He's not going
to make Caleb Williams plays. I would guarantee you. If
we got Ben Johnson on the show, gave him truth serum.
You could say to him, Hey, who's your ideal quarterback? Well,
(19:48):
Caleb moves like, uh, Brock Purdy moves like Caleb Williams.
And Brock Purdy is elite in the pocket like Jared Goff.
He's basically a mix of Goff and Caleb Williams. And
I'm sorry, guys, if you're not a believer in Purdy,
I don't know what to tell you.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Want more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day,
seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Hour number two here on the Herd on a football Friday.
Speaker 4 (20:16):
Baseball weekend as well.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
We may touch on the WNBA playoffs as the fever
got bounced last night.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Blame the refs.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd, joined by Rachel Nichols. Rachel,
I have to ask, I know you're a big Washington
Commanders fan.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
They play in London early Sunday morning. 6.30 a.m. out
here in California.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Now listen, I know you're going to be all over
the Dodgers game. How are you going to handle that
6.30 a.m.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Wake up? I usually sleep in a tad and wake
up for the second half.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Are you making coffee at 6.15 to get ready and
dialed in?
Speaker 9 (20:55):
You got to watch, right?
Speaker 4 (20:56):
And plus, the Dodgers game is in the afternoon. Get
to bed early on Saturday night. Get up and watch football.
What about Northwestern? When do they play this weekend? They
open their new stadium this weekend. It's going to be huge.
You can't be everywhere, Rachel.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
I can't.
Speaker 12 (21:08):
I know.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
I'm going to be very happy in front of my television.
It's great. October is the best month in sports, right?
Speaker 5 (21:15):
I lean November, but I don't know if I can
say that because college basketball also starts. Anyways, anyways, great
weekend of NFL action. And folks, Sunday's 1 p.m. slate
is ridiculously loaded. Pace yourself. So many good games.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Rams-Eagles, we'll talk about that. But I do want to
focus on one game, and it's not just because this
show and this network and anybody who talks football for
a living loves to talk Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
But Cowboys-Texans, to me, is an elimination game.
Speaker 7 (21:40):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Houston's 0-3. They did make the playoffs last year at 0-3.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
There's one team in NFL history that made the playoffs
at 0-4, and the staff tells me that is the
92 Chargers, who started 0-4 and then won 11 of 12.
But that was in a 16-game schedule, and it was 1992,
which might as well have been the Ice Age when
it comes to the NFL.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
This one's different.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
0-4 and the Texans are done. Now, we're going to
see Nico Collins. He adds back at practice, soft tissue
injuries are dangerous. If he's a go, I think the
Texans are good. It's actually the Cowboys that I'm worried about.
So they're coming off the Rio trip and the ending
was bad. And it was compounded by the mental mistakes
(22:25):
led by Schottenheimer, led by Brandon Aubrey, led by Dak Prescott,
although Shottie is falling on the sword because that's what
you have to do. And that's why, you know, Jerry
hires guys like Schottenheimer. Bill Parcells wasn't falling on the
sword the way Schottenheimer did. Jimmy Johnson was not doing
that and taking the blame. We look at the Schottenheimer situation.
(22:48):
He was basically apologizing profusely, and he feels like he's
kind of backed into a corner. Things were getting squirrely
in Dallas early in the week. Then they go out
and trade for Joey Porter, and I said when it happened,
this kind of reeks of desperation. I know Dallas has
secondary injuries. but making a move like this. Now, Jerry
(23:09):
has been talking for a while. Oh, well, we got,
we got space to make moves cap space that is. And,
and he comes out and does this and it feels
a little desperate. I mean, Joey Porter, I don't know
what to make of this guy. So he practiced Monday
and Tuesday this week and was trending toward playing for
the Steelers Wednesday. He's like, oh, my back. It's hurting.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
I can't go. And they're like, Get the hell out
of town. We're trading. Get out of Dodge. We don't
want anything to.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Do with you.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
Now he's practicing with the Cowboys, and it sounds like
Joey Porter's a go.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
You can read into that what you will.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
But here is Brian Schottenheimer on the Joey Porter trade.
Speaker 9 (23:47):
We're in a win-now mindset. That doesn't change.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Why?
Speaker 9 (23:49):
Well, Jerry's 84.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
That's one reason.
Speaker 9 (23:51):
Dak Prescott's still playing at an elite level. We've got
some elite weapons on offense, and the defense is getting better.
And again, you add a player like this that Um, again,
I've just had a ton of respect for the way
he plays, the flexibility he gives you, you know, you
can do different things away from him because he's so talented.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
So again, there was high hopes for the Cowboys defense.
I'm just going to remind people in week one, they
could not stop Jackson darts. who on third down, I
think the Giants were something like eight for 11.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
It was ridiculous.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
Week two, they can't stop Jaden Daniels in the first half.
Washington's on the doorstep and Jaden Daniels gets hurt with
one second left done for the game. Forget the second half.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
It was a blowout.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
And then in week three, the Ravens go up and
down the field, and Dallas actually takes the lead, should
have won the game, and then blows it.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
So Dallas can't stop anybody. I don't know if you
saw the comments this week.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Wink Martindale, the former defensive coordinator, he's not even employed
by a team right now, best I can tell. He
came out and said that the Cowboys defense is getting outclassed,
which is a shot at Christian Parker, the young defensive
coordinator who they stole from the Eagles. I mean, things
are getting really messy in Dallas. And then, You know,
who could have seen this coming? But this morning, Jerry
(25:06):
Jones went on the radio because that's what owners do
on Friday. Here's Jerry Jones this morning going on the
radio and talking about the team.
Speaker 6 (25:15):
We hope that this is not only an improvement in
just generally our personnel, but we hope it can really
be one that he really finds his level of success
if you will, abilities or level to perform on the field.
(25:36):
I would hope with Mira, maybe the George Pickens move
that brought him in. And I know that's pretty high bar,
that's pretty high expectations, but you have to have them
to make a trade like this.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
What a disaster. I mean, it's just, Jerry Joe just
has to soak up all the oxygen.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
And a quick reminder, if this piling on wasn't enough,
Mike Tomlin, in between building Minecraft cities, apparently, took a
shot at the Cowboys and their clock management last week
as well. So it's like everybody is just take open
season on Dallas.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
The owner's chatty. Folks, this is the same old thing.
Give me the Texans this weekend. All right, let's go
to our guests.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
My guy, Adam Chernoff, gambling machine. He has a podcast,
The Simple Handicap. I've known Adam for, I don't know,
probably six years. Every time we talk, I try to
learn something from him. He's one of these like undercover
gamblers who is really good at what he does. And
I'm just trying to learn, Adam, let's start because you
love to beat me up. We have a lot of
(26:40):
fun back and forth. You come on my podcast. I
got to say, last time you came on in August,
you were talking about a Chargers Super Bowl. And I'm
a little stunned that they're 0-3. I love the Mike
McDaniel hire, just like you did. What the hell's going
on with the Chargers? I know you're breaking it down.
Speaker 8 (26:57):
Okay.
Speaker 12 (26:57):
This is fair because last season I gave you a
lot of flack on air for your JJ McCarthy support,
which failed miserably. So I get that you're coming back
at me now in season.
Speaker 8 (27:07):
I'll take it. I'll wear it. I'm, I'm as surprised
as you, I'm as surprised as everybody.
Speaker 12 (27:12):
I don't remember in 18 years of betting on the NFL,
a team that had so much hype around them preseason.
And a lot of it was validated too. It wasn't
just smoke and just things being made up in the media.
It was genuine and, I don't remember a team that
had all of that in the preseason that has failed
this spectacularly through three weeks so far.
Speaker 8 (27:33):
And Jason, it's every level.
Speaker 12 (27:35):
The offensive line with these elite tackles coming in can't block.
Justin Herbert, lowest passer rating through three games in his
entire career. There's no run game. The defense is making mistakes.
It's the worst special teams unit. Harbaugh's never dealt with
a situation like this, which is why I'm blown away
by And to see McDaniel fail like this.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
Is bizarre as well. And it's all bad.
Speaker 12 (27:58):
And it's certainly not going to get easier on the
road in Seattle for an offense that's struggling. It's a
head scratcher. And I'll wear the all the blame for
this one for anyone who followed that earlier.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
We all miss. So they could start like one in seven.
It's bad. I just want to ask.
Speaker 11 (28:12):
So.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
I don't think Harbaugh's in any trouble.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
I saw Dan Wolkin, a respected columnist, wrote something for
Yahoo about a hot seat.
Speaker 4 (28:19):
I'm not buying that.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
But what's interesting is McDaniel did really good things with Tua.
We thought he would cook with Herbert. I mean, you're
probably going to run him out if it doesn't work out, right?
Speaker 12 (28:30):
Well, it's possible the way that it's going because we've
seen Harbaugh switch his tone now for the first time ever.
It's gone from everything's okay, Herbert's great, the offense is
going to figure it out, to now he's starting to
push a little bit of blame out. And so I
think a telltale sign the next few weeks is whether
or not this can work beyond the script. Jason, so far,
(28:50):
Chargers have scored 30 points. More than half of those
have been on the opening drive. And so they're getting
a higher contribution from their opening drive for their points
scored than any other team in football. And that was
a similar case when McDaniel started to struggle in Miami.
Really good in the first quarter. That script, once it
wore off, the offense really struggled. And so I think
(29:10):
we'll see that continue. But let's just see if the
team can put together four quarters. But certainly seats are
getting hot.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (29:17):
All right.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
Let's go to week four. The schedule's incredible. One thing
I noticed, if you include.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Cleveland-Pittsburgh last night, 12 of the 16 games are either
two and a half spread, three or three and a half.
I personally do not like this week a lot, but
we're going to start with one of the marquee games.
I was gassing up Brock Purdy earlier. Niners, I think
it's still minus two and a half, hosting Denver. Everybody's
waiting with bated breath for this injury report.
Speaker 4 (29:43):
Trent Williams, Mike Evans, Drake Greenlaw.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
I don't know if you have inside information, but you
do like the Broncos here, huh?
Speaker 6 (29:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (29:51):
Bet the Broncos plus three minus one 20 pretty heavily.
A couple of reasons for that. Like you mentioned the
injury report for San Francisco, it's dire. It sounds like
Evans 50 50, but Williams is going to go as
of this morning, but defensively, Jason. They've got injuries in
the secondary. It's just a ripple effect. And it looked
(30:12):
good against the dolphins. It looked good against the Cardinals.
It looked good against the Rams on nine hours of
sleep on a jet in Australia. But now they're facing
the Broncos, very good defense and an offense that quietly it's.
Speaker 8 (30:26):
Not being made public.
Speaker 12 (30:28):
But when you look at the advanced stats and you
look at the changes, it is very clear that Sean
Payton has.
Speaker 8 (30:34):
Taken back some of this offense.
Speaker 12 (30:36):
His halftime interview, I don't know if you saw it,
week one against the Chiefs. That was as out of
line as we've seen from a head coach after two
quarters of a season. It was very clear he was
unhappy since that game, motion rates way up. formations changed pre-snap.
We're seeing pass rate over expectation go way up. This
(30:58):
looks like a Peyton offense the last two weeks, and
they're going to get whatever they want on the ground
and through the air against this Niners defense.
Speaker 8 (31:05):
And so I think the Broncos win this one outright.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Huh.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
That would be something if Peyton was sneakily calling plays,
but giving Davis Webb the credit. Let me ask you though,
these last two Broncos comebacks, So they could do nothing
in the first half against the Jags, nothing in the
first half against the Rams. But at altitude, those opponents
wore down and kind of melted. Now you've got to
go back on the road. They couldn't stop the run
of Kenneth Walker in week one. McCaffrey doesn't have one
(31:29):
explosive carry this year. Is this the week the Niners
go heavy ground game and run all over Denver just
like the Chiefs did?
Speaker 8 (31:37):
I don't think it's going to be as effective.
Speaker 12 (31:39):
I think McCaffrey is going to have a bigger impact
in the receiving game. That's typically been some of the
issues with this Denver offense and where Shanahan tends to go.
Speaker 8 (31:47):
And so I think you'll be used in the past
game a little bit more.
Speaker 12 (31:50):
And there's been some professional money hitting the prop market,
pushing that up. But I think this is going to
be tough for the Niners for four quarters, as good
as they've looked. It's just a much different class of
opponent for these Broncos defensive and offensive lines that they're facing.
And I think the Bronx Broncos control the trenches here.
So it's going to be a different Niners team this week.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
Where are you on Purdy? I know there's like the
big four quarterbacks. Do you think.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Purdy's in that five, six with like Stafford? Is he
right there or is he more like outside the top 10?
Speaker 12 (32:21):
No, he's there. He's matured a lot. He's proving that
he's very capable of running this system. And it's a
combination so far for this offense, Jason, 5% better in
success rate than the 2000 Rams to put in perspective,
how good the Niners have been through three weeks. it's
a combination of just elite coaching and play calling a
(32:41):
very good quarter quarterback operating a great system, but also very, very,
very weak defensive opponents. And so again, that's what it's
been so far this week.
Speaker 8 (32:51):
It changes.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
Interesting.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
All right, let's go to you're hot on this Bengals
Jags game. So Bengals did not look great last week.
Let Aaron Rogers and the tight ends just eat them
up all, all game long.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Now they host the Jags. I don't totally know what
to make of the Jags, Adam. Trevor Lawrence has been great.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
I think they're perfect in the red zone or something,
some ridiculous number on the scoring drive. Maybe it was
five scoring drives in a row.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
But again, their competition's also been kind of inferior. Where
are you on this game? Because I'm with you. I
think I like the Bengals.
Speaker 12 (33:26):
Kind of inferior is being very polite to the competition
the Jags have.
Speaker 8 (33:30):
Faced so far through three weeks.
Speaker 12 (33:31):
And so, like you said, it's a bit of a
hard team to read because last year there was the
biggest overperformance in terms of wins and losses versus yards
per play and per down metrics. And it's carried over
so far this season. They're right around neutral for yards
per play differential, which is very important.
Speaker 8 (33:48):
But again, they've played very weak competition.
Speaker 12 (33:52):
Heavily in this one minus two and a half, because
I think this is a week where we learn a
lot and see a lot about this Jags defense, specifically
the secondary. They just sit in zone coverage all game long.
One of the highest zone rates in the league. It's
a very soft passive zone. And they're a really big,
what we call past funnel defense in the world of
betting where teams want to throw a lot on them.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
And it's again, look good when.
Speaker 12 (34:17):
You face a very weak defense, on the other side
for week after week after week so far. What's going
on with Drake May? What are we expecting from him?
Like how that Pat's offense way underperforming too.
Speaker 8 (34:30):
But they've just had such an easy schedule.
Speaker 12 (34:33):
And now it's Burrow with these two elite wide receivers
and a Bengals offense that's such a big step up
in class. And so I think the Bengals offense has
a massive game. They've This is, this is where we
see the class of the FC with Cincinnati emerge.
Speaker 8 (34:51):
I think Jacksonville so far, a little bit phony.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
It's almost sounds like you think the Bengals are maybe
an AFC contender here.
Speaker 8 (34:58):
Well, of course they're an AFC contender. Okay. Of course
they are. I mean, I don't know. They just, is
there disagreement?
Speaker 3 (35:05):
Rod Rogers just carved them up. I mean, I thought
they were good too, but I mean, how much of
that was the first two weeks, the defense, like Baker Mayfield,
four turnover, four fumbles or whatever.
Speaker 12 (35:15):
Yeah, Mayfield contributed a lot with the turnovers. Week two
against Houston, very difficult spot to play. And then those
AFC North games, as we saw last night, the market
never knows what to do with them.
Speaker 8 (35:27):
They're very tough to bet.
Speaker 12 (35:29):
Into, and it's just weird game after weird game, very
hard to predict. And so, again, that's a very good
Steelers defense on the other side. I know Watson looked
better than I thought many expected him to last night,
but this is by far the weakest pass defense ever.
Speaker 8 (35:44):
Burrowing this bangles offense's face this season.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
Uh let's go to one other marquee game um eagles
rams This number's ticking up because of the Devonta Smith news.
Sounds like he's going to be a no-go with the hamstring.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
That is bleak. They're on a short week.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
Rams have had one of the most difficult travel schedules,
but Puka Nakua expected back. I mean, Rams were Australia,
come home for primetime on Monday, then have to go
primetime at altitude, and now have to go across the
country for an early body clock start in Philly, where
I believe Stafford and McVay are 0-3 or 0-4, something
like that.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
Anything on Rams-Eagles.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
Yeah, it's out to three and a half.
Speaker 12 (36:23):
I would still look at the Rams minus three and
a half, although it's a bet I like less than
the last two we just talked about. You mentioned that
McVay is 0-3 against the Eagles, against Fangio. That's a
big talking point. But in those games, the Rams have
moved the ball very well. And I think this Eagles
team is very different from what we've seen in seasons
past in those matchups. And if you think about what
(36:44):
the Rams do very well, two, three tight end sets,
heavier personnel, That's really where Fangio defenses have had some
trouble against other teams.
Speaker 8 (36:54):
And so this is a game where I think McVay.
Speaker 12 (36:56):
With the desperation, my goodness, the second half in that
game against Denver, you can.
Speaker 8 (37:01):
See it on his face. It was like a conference
championship game.
Speaker 12 (37:03):
I think we see a big McVay game terms of
scheme here against this Eagles defense where he has success.
And on the other side, like the Eagles offense right
now is so broken. The offensive line is such a
big step down from years past. The offense is refusing
to target the middle of the field. And now you
take out Smith, your best wide receiver. There were just
(37:25):
so many opportunities for big plays against the Bears, a
very weak defense they couldn't take advantage of. Until Mannion
shows me something that gives me a little bit of
hope in this offense, I think the Eagles are a
fade or a play against team. And so Rams off
of that misleading loss where the league said, hey, you
should have won because that was a penalty. I think, again,
(37:46):
look good here against this Eagles team.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Now, I know injuries are big, but it looks like
two tight ends haven't practiced for the Rams this week.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
Aaron Donald hasn't practiced. Puna Ford.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
So, again, I don't know how much you weigh injuries here,
but the Rams are pretty beat up.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
As are the Eagles, obviously.
Speaker 8 (38:03):
They are.
Speaker 12 (38:03):
And we're seeing that reflected in the price. You go
back a few weeks, this was a much different number.
And so things are being adjusted. I think in general,
some of these injuries being a little bit overblown as
the Rams come down, they were by far the biggest
favorite we've seen in many years preseason. Now they're getting
to a level that makes it very reasonable. As much
as injuries matter, I tend to think from just the
(38:24):
betting stance, we're seeing injuries really overvalued a lot so
far across the league.
Speaker 8 (38:29):
Interesting.
Speaker 6 (38:30):
All right.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
Let's go to the game you like. This is kind
of a rough watch.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Cardinals, Giants, the G-Men with Jameis Winston under center, J.J.
Speaker 4 (38:39):
McCarthy, the backup.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
Arizona coming off an impressive second half and a great,
great cover if you had them against the 49ers. But
the Giants are beat up. Brian Burns out for the season.
I'm assuming you and your group drove this from Cardinals, what,
pick them to minus two and a half?
Speaker 8 (38:54):
Yeah, we've been on it all week.
Speaker 12 (38:56):
I know there's been another professional group that has as well.
This is just a very classic handicapping spot that looks great.
The Giants are off of a game. It was ugly
weather against a really bad Titans team. Cam Ward threw
a mind-numbing interception. interception that should have let the Titans
win that game. So the Giants escaped their two and one.
(39:16):
And then on the other side, it is a Cardinals
team that just played the 49ers, just played the Seahawks,
two of the best teams in the NFL have exceeded expectations,
looked much better. And now you get this matchup of
these two teams off of differing results last week. And look, Jason,
I love Winston as a personality.
Speaker 8 (39:37):
I love what he brings to the league. He's fun
to watch. I get it.
Speaker 12 (39:41):
Two months ago, he was partying on buses for the
World Cup as the reporter.
Speaker 6 (39:46):
Yes.
Speaker 12 (39:46):
It's very clear his arm strength is not what it
used to be. And his biggest asset was being able
to fire it downfield into tight windows and take chances.
I don't see that visually through a game and a
half that he still has that pop in his arm.
And I think it's a turnover machine waiting to happen.
And so to me, Arizona is the better offense, the
better defense, and they have the better quarterback and you're
(40:09):
laying a short price on the road.
Speaker 8 (40:10):
So this has drifted up.
Speaker 12 (40:12):
We've been on it pretty heavily, but Arizona minus two
and a half, I think is a really good side
this week.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
Playing points with Jacoby Brissett, the immortal Jacoby Brissett on
the road.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
One more, let me get it in because I'm a
Jets guy. You're a Jets guy. I know Gino has been.
Speaker 8 (40:26):
He's been great. You can say it. He's been great.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
Well, he's been pretty good. I'll give you pretty good.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Good numbers against Detroit, but you could put up good
numbers against Detroit.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
So they go to Chicago.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
It sounds like it's going to be Bajent, but Ben
Johnson was just asked, and he's like, you'll find out Sunday.
He's not saying anything. I like Bears here at three,
but at three and a half, you like Jets, huh?
Speaker 12 (40:48):
It's tough because everything about this matchup and what we
saw on Monday night and the hype that's coming over
from that and where this price is for the Bears,
it says pet the Jets as like an easy decision.
Here's where I get hung up. Aaron Glenn versus Ben Johnson.
If you were to go back 20 years and handpick
the biggest coaching mismatch that you could possibly create, this
(41:13):
is it right here. And there's so much familiarity from
the two in their time in Detroit. I promise you
Johnson knows everything that Glenn is going to try to
throw at him defensively. And honestly, I think the Bajan
versus Keenum back and forth is kind of an advantage
because you don't have, well, we just saw it on
tape with Keenum.
Speaker 8 (41:32):
We know what's coming.
Speaker 12 (41:33):
And so if they do go Bajan, it's a very
different look. And so, man, I would love to take
the points with the Jets here, but this coaching mismatch,
I can't do it.
Speaker 8 (41:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
One of the guys in our morning meeting said Ben
Johnson would be like top three and Aaron Glenn's bottom
three in the league.
Speaker 8 (41:48):
100 percent. Absolutely.
Speaker 12 (41:50):
It might be it might be 232 if we're being honest.
Speaker 8 (41:54):
Second versus 30.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
You're that low on Glenn, even though Salah's 0-3. I
guess Todd Munkin's passed Glenn by at this point.
Speaker 12 (42:02):
Jason, he's a defensive coach that is known for having
great secondaries. And now he has a secondary that hasn't
turned the team over in a year and three weeks.
Like nothing about what he's said and done is reflecting
what the Jets are doing on the field. And so
I just, I can't buy into this.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
I can't.
Speaker 3 (42:22):
Okay, so who do you want as a Jets coach
next year? Tomlin is out there. Do you go after
a college coach? Is there an offensive coordinator you like?
I mean, we're seeing Kubiak just do awesome things with
the Raiders. Who do you want as our coach next year?
Speaker 12 (42:36):
I mean, Tomlin would be just the most Jets decision ever,
I feel like.
Speaker 8 (42:40):
But I I'm I'll leave it open.
Speaker 12 (42:43):
I'll say give me any offensive driven, offensive minded younger
coach to take this team the direction they need to
go and get out of two decade near span of irrelevance.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
OK, last one real quick. Patriots, Bills, Drake Mays on
the absolute struggle bus right now. And this is six
and a half. I think I just saw seven somewhere.
I thought I was going to make a case for
the Patriots, but it has may been so bad. You
don't want to touch him going up against Josh Allen.
I mean, there's the chatter about May's shoulder injury. And
then you've got Vrabel saying, I don't know what he's
(43:14):
talking about.
Speaker 4 (43:14):
There's, there's nothing. What the hell's going on with the Patriots?
Speaker 8 (43:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (43:18):
When your head coach is saying my level of concern
is very high for this team after three weeks in
this press conference, that's a problem. The, the questions about
May's shoulder this week have taken a very different turn
than And there's nobody really playing it down anymore. And
so I do wonder if there's actually something going on. Also,
his mechanics with his wrist and his shoulder together are
(43:41):
very different from last year.
Speaker 8 (43:42):
That's getting called out.
Speaker 12 (43:43):
But at just the base of this, Jason, the offensive
line is down three starters and a backup and they
can't protect. The defensive line is down multiple edge rushers
and they can't generate pressure. The offense is without their
best wide receiver, A.J. Brown, and is relying on Mac
Hollins to lead the team in catches.
Speaker 8 (44:02):
There's problems.
Speaker 12 (44:02):
And if you tell me Christian Gonzalez is going to
miss this game, which is seeming more and more likely
as the injury reports come out. Like going on the
road into Buffalo is going to be a major issue
for them to keep up with points. Now, Allen does
has the knee issue. It's unclear if that's going to
have any impact and what that is. Buffalo's keeping that
very quiet. Last year, there was an arm issue that
(44:26):
was kept very quiet, but we saw his plate dip
quite a bit. And so that's the only reason that
this number has not been jumped on by professionals, because
there is that uncertainty with the Bills offense.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
Wait, I haven't seen this Allen thing. Where are you
seeing this?
Speaker 12 (44:41):
While you're on air in front of millions of people,
there's bettors like us behind the scenes doing some work.
So he took a helmet to the knee and is
dealing with it's not labeled an injury.
Speaker 8 (44:51):
It's labeled a soreness.
Speaker 12 (44:52):
But it was a similar thing in years past with
his arm and his elbow. And it didn't keep him
out and didn't knock him out of games. So just
something to keep in mind. That's the only reason this
number hasn't ballooned up.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
Josh Allen. Oh, my gosh. All right, Adam Chernoff, gambler.
He's good. He's good, folks.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
I just hope the 49ers win.
Speaker 4 (45:13):
Thanks a lot, Adam, and have a great weekend.
