(00:22):
listening to Fox Sports Radio. Matt Hasselbeck spend the weekend
combining with Fernando Mendoza. Tys Simpson got thoughts on all
of it. I hope you like Fernando Mendoz as much
as I do, because I think the kid's really special.
I really like him. Well, we do it every Monday.

(00:46):
Colin was right, Colin was wrong. Let's not waste any
time and let's get right to it on a Monday
where Colin was right. Well Byron Scott Knight agree he
said last week and in law it should be Lebron's
last season with the Lakers. Listen. The plus minus with
Lebron and Luca when they're on the floor is awful.

(01:08):
Lebron is now the second slowest player in the NBA,
which would be fine if he was surrounded by a young,
athletic defensive squad, but he can't assist to hide Lebron's
fatal flaw, which is conditioning and bad defense. So now
Byron's got a popular former laker has moved to our side.
Where Colin was wrong, I think the Knicks have a

(01:31):
low ceiling, but they're fun to watch well. The Spurs
were on an eleven game winning streak and the Knicks
dominated him yesterday. Watched every dribble and jump shot. Listen.
They forced Wemby into seven turnovers. Wemby won for seven
on threes. The Knicks had a very spirited at home
defensive effort, and I never worry about the Knicks scoring.

(01:53):
Brunson and Kat and Og and Bridges, Josh Hart. They
got guys who can filled up. They got a lot
of pieces there moved Yesterday. Was great on offense, but
it was their defensive effort against Wemby and others that
stood out. Where Colin was right. The Vikings are now
interested in Anthony Richardson and Tua. This shows a clear

(02:17):
sign publicly that they've got concerns about JJ McCarthy. Now
they'll frame it as hey, we just want a spirited competition,
but they're already forty five million over the cap, and
they don't want to pay for another player. So I mean,
they built this team like the Broncos did and the
Bears did with their young quarterback to load up on

(02:37):
the roster, and they can't because they're going to have
to go semi big game hunting. And reportedly three different quarterbacks,
including Anthony Richardson, are on their radar. Where Colin was wrong,
Now there's a report here the Chiefs are the betting
favorites to sign Tyreek Hill, and I don't get it.
Been there and done that. Secondly, is he's got injury

(03:00):
concerns and maturity off field issues, and doesn't that kind
of sum up what the Chiefs are already dealing with
with Rashid Rice. So I certainly don't think he's a
great mentor for young receivers. Now he's a home run hitter,
but the way people are defending Tyreek Hill, I just

(03:20):
don't think that's a primary need. I think it's more
running back, O line and edge rusher. But the betting
market says Tyreek's a Chief and I don't really get it.
Where Colin was right, Well, I felt vindicated finally, despite
the fact I do think he's in all time great
offensive talent. The public and the media is acknowledging, oh luka,

(03:42):
Donzig isn't a perfect player. There's some video out of
Luca jj Reddick this weekend having a confrontation. Doesn't work
with Lebron. The constant berating and arguing with officials. Is
he committed to the body. There's arguments, and he doesn't
necessarily match up well according to net ratings with Lebron. James,

(04:06):
all I'm saying is Dallas got on the phone for
a reason, just like Anthony Davis James Harden. When great
players get bounced around and traded, there's usually some reason
for it. Where Colin was wrong, I always defended Kyler
Murray and the Cardinals desperate for a star quarterback. Reportedly

(04:26):
now they're moving on. Listen. I loved how elusive he was.
I thought he was a more elusive version than Russell
Wilson in his prime. I think he's super athlete. I
think he throws a beautiful ball. But you know, their
commitment issues, there are health issues, and the truth is
seven years in they've made the playoffs once in a

(04:47):
very good division. True, but I was always a bigger
Kyler Murray fan than I think the marketplace. So I'll
take an l on that one. Where Colin was right,
Steph Curry, I'm gonna miss five more games. One of
the mantras on this show fall in love with your kids,
fall in like with your superstars. Listen, man, I love Steph.

(05:11):
This roster is brutal, small, old fast break points, bottom
four points in the paint, bottom four. Hey, they shoot threes? Well, yeah,
most of the league does now as well. And I
love Steph Curry. I just like to see him play
for a winner. But it feels like they have been
trapped for the last three years and they've gone from

(05:34):
mediocre to unwatchable. Where Colin was right, I keep telling
j Mac Malik Willis is going to have a market
There's just there's six teams that need a quarterback. He's young,
twenty six, he's athletic, and he's accurate well. According to
a story today, Jeremy Fowler ESPN says he's not going

(05:55):
to get thirty million, but the Jets, Cardinals, and Miami
Dolphins are going to be options for Malik Willis, who
I acknowledge. I like him much more than the marketplace
Robert May's last week. Agreed with me, there's something here
with Willis.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
If you're a quarterback and needy team and you're telling
me that you're not looking at Malik Willis, you're a liar.
And think about how many quarterback and needy teams there
are and how few avenues there are to those guys.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
This year, Baker Mayfield signed.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
A one year, four million dollar deal to be the
buck starting quarterback. And then when he succeeds, you see
it start to creep up. All right, Donald's ten million,
Daniel Jones is fifteen million, Justin Fields is now twenty million.
And so the idea that you could have gotten Baker
for four million bucks three years ago, and now Malik
Willis is going to make thirty million.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Dollars a year in free agency.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
It just shows you how fast things change when a
certain idea starts working for people.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Well, we're getting ready for March madness. Saint John's has
split with Yukon. They came back from twelve down to
beat Georgetown last night. They're twenty four and six and
they're legendary coach thirty eight years coaching basketball. Rick Matino
is now joining US live and last time. This is
very fun because you know we were talking about this

(07:45):
a second ago. You know, they want to expand the
tournament and I'm like, it used to be sixty four.
It started on Thursday. I could fill out my bracket.
It was easy. And then they've got the first four.
That screws me up a little bit. And I don't
know about these teams. I like the certain sanctity of like,
I'm for inclusion, but I think sixty four is a big,

(08:05):
fat number and sixty eight is a big number. What
is your general take on expanding it even further?

Speaker 7 (08:12):
Well, I guess it would come down to, what's the
reason for expansion. Is it to make sure a if
a Saint Louis is undefeated and people are somehow thinking
of not putting them in the tournament if they get
knocked out of their bracket.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
I think that's absurd.

Speaker 7 (08:26):
You know, any team that goes undefeated, I don't care
what level you're at, you deserve an NCAA bit. You
got to go on the road in front of a
hostile crowd every single night. And whoever may be Miami
of Ohio is another exim Miay of Ohio I think
is undefeated. They wouldout question deserve a bit if they
go undefeated.

Speaker 6 (08:47):
Right.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
So, I think last time I had you on, we
talked about this. I think nil is great for college basketball.
And I told Adam Silber when he was on this show,
stop demonizing college basketball. The coaching's better, the swag, the
nutrition get paid now. And the other thing is they
have to play in environments that you don't get in
the G League. I mean, you're playing in Madison Square Garden,
you're playing in Kansas. These are NBA level intensity. And

(09:12):
I'll tell you last year's draft was great. I mean
it's a mix I didn't know Conkin I was that good.
I knew Cooper Flag was good. This draft is supposed
to be legendary. Are you noticing in the last two
or three years what the Nile has done, especially teams
like you at the top Rick I turned on Michigan
Illinois Friday. Michigan is stacked. It looks like the top

(09:34):
ten to fifteen teams of which you're part of them
are noticeably deeper than five years ago. Right that feels
like that person the.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Florign influence with the NBA as well as college.

Speaker 7 (09:44):
So if you're a great I coached in the Ponatanaikos
in the EuroLeague, and if you're a basketball player at
aspiring to go to the EuroLeague because the NBA is
not right in your reach as a foreign player, you'd
rather go to college. It pays almost twice more than
the EuroLeague unless you are the first and second best
player on the EuroLeague team. The rest of the ROSTA

(10:07):
you could go to college and get paid a lot
more money. So college basketball has elevated to a level
of great play right now. You look at Duke, you
look at Arizona, you look at Michigan. Those are three
basketball teams that I look at that can win a
national championship.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Because of their incredible talent.

Speaker 7 (10:24):
Then you have the Connecticuts to Illinois and people like
that that are very very deep, very well coached, and
they can win a national championship.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
So it's a lot of fun.

Speaker 7 (10:34):
I've never seen college basketball in the last two years
this strong. I've been coaching fifty some odd years. But
it would have to go back to the Kareem days,
the Walton days, where everybody stayed in school.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Yo, I remember though Bill Walton was arguably the best
college basketball player of all time, went to Portland, won
a title with the Blazers and Jack Ramsey. The you
know European players, the Tony kukach Era, everybody always said
they're soft, they're skilled, but they're soft. Well, now you
got they're not Jokic just bullying people, Lucas screaming at
the officials. Yannis is a physical player. What do you

(11:10):
think led because and now you're facing European players, Regulardy,
what do you think led to? You know, and I
think some of it was fair more finesse European players,
they're now very physical. What changed over there?

Speaker 7 (11:25):
Well, I like European basketball players because they passed, they
cut They really understand how to play. Ball movement's great.
I watched the game and I'm not going to say
the team the other night. It's the first time I
said I can't watch this anymore. It was a West
Coast team in the pros and it was just back
the man in, back them in in, take a fade
away jump shot, get beat in transition, and I said,

(11:47):
I can't watch any more of this. There was no
ball movement, no player movement whatsoever. And then in the
Europeans they used the ball movement, play a movement, go
to the high post as the center, find the back
door cutter, set screens pop out.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
The ability to shoot the three. For pretty foreign players.

Speaker 7 (12:05):
My team, I have a player from Austria, Sweden, Nigeria, Ghana, Portugal, Greece.
So it's the foreign influences is here to stay. But
it makes the game so much better because they really
understand how to play. Now most of them defensively can't
guard me, but on offense they're great.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, well they have to play against older men, I
mean to be honest with you. So it's now now
Steve Kerr has lamented the AAU. And you know, we've
had some you know, domestic players John Morant Zion who
are gifted but haven't kind of panned out. Although this
year's draft it looks like the domestic players are crushing.

Speaker 8 (12:42):
Is there?

Speaker 6 (12:43):
You know?

Speaker 1 (12:44):
When Kerr bangs on AAU basketball, I mean, just look
at your roster. It's full of European and global players.
How is the domestic product to you right now?

Speaker 7 (12:54):
Well, the easiest thing to do is blame the AAU system,
and I'm not one of those people that do that.
I would rather blame parents than I would AAU. I
think parents today are way too involved in their children's
careers as far as growing up. The parents need to
just sit in the stands, enjoy the game, and let
the kids develop and develop a love for the game.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Twenty years ago, I never dealt with parents.

Speaker 7 (13:20):
I'm very lucky. I've got parents that are disciplinarians. They
get after their kids. But the ones that aren't hurt
much more than AAU. They want to Okay, let's go
to a different school next year because you can make
three hundred thousand more. Now, let's grind it out where
you're at and play for Tom izzo and play for
this person, and play for this guy because he's going

(13:40):
to make you a terrific basketball player with discipline and character.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
You know, Rick, it's pretty amazing. You've got players from
several continents, and I'm sure with some there can be
semi language barriers. And yet enough, if you watch Saint
John's play, defense is all about communication and effort and
your team's play defense. How do you It's kind of
fascinating to me. How do you with some sometimes language barriers.

(14:06):
And you know, you got older players, younger players. This
guy's from Ghana, this guy can be from Chicago. How
do you make it?

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Do you?

Speaker 1 (14:12):
How do you tie the string and make it work?

Speaker 8 (14:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (14:16):
One week link kills your defense. I have a young
man lithetis h He's Greek. I can't say his last name.
By coleim lefty and I said, left they look do
me a favor. Communicate defensively. That's the keto on defense.
Tell them to down it, tell them to switch it,
tell them bring them my way so we can switch it.
I said, just talk and communicate defensively. I don't care

(14:38):
if you do it in Greek. Open your mouth up
and talk defensively. And that's the biggest problem I have
with the European basketball players. They don't verbally communicate as much.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
Yeah, so we're a couple of weeks away from March Madness.
The old cliche is it's guard play and and you
know it's years ago. I went back and I looked
at the numbers. You don't necessarily have to be playing
great going into the Tournament's a little bit of a myth.
We've seen teams that cool off. I remember that Florida
Gator Billy Donovan team, the one back to backs. They

(15:09):
lost the game late. If I recall they flew through
the tournament fuzzy memory. But if I recall, that's what happened.
You tell me last night, you almost lose. You come
back to Georgetown. Should I look if a guy is
filling out a bracket to you, guard plays essential? What
is something in the tournament that guys like me don't discuss?

(15:30):
But you're always a sneaky important Well.

Speaker 7 (15:33):
The first thing you have to look at his free
throw percentage. It's always going to come down to making
your free throws at the end of the game. And
godplay is the second most important thing. When you look
at say, Florida right now. Florida right now is a
team middle of the season because of all the new
players in the back court, they weren't playing great. Now
they are, and you have to look at Florida as

(15:55):
one of the favorites to repeat as national champions because
their front court is so good and now that backcourt
has come on. So when you look at Florida, Arizona,
Michigan and Duke and teams of that caliber, you see
they have great godplay and they can make their free throws.
If you have a team that doesn't make free throws,
they can't win six games, can't because it's going to

(16:17):
come down to free throws in about forty to fifty
percent of the games.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Yeah, you know, a lot of guys Roy Williams, coach
k Jay Wright, they're like, yeah, I'm done, I did it,
And you're like, no, I'm going to go to Saint John's.
I'm going to go play at Maddison. I think you've
had like ten or eleven games at the MSG. You
have great energy. Still, you're smiling, you're happy. Do you
think some of your ability to remain viable is the

(16:45):
fact that you're not a you don't you have an
interesting balance. I don't see a lot of rigidity, but
I do see you're demanding. You're demanding without rigidity, and
I think it's part of your personality. I mean it's
it's why have you lasted this long and why do
you still have great energy?

Speaker 6 (17:03):
Well?

Speaker 3 (17:03):
I think I took two years off of coaching.

Speaker 7 (17:06):
I didn't think I was going to get back in
the game and wound up going upon it Tonkos in
Greece and had a blast doing that. I think being
adaptable is key. I'm coaching fifty years now. I met
with one of my players, Joe Sansen, on the other
day and I said, listen, Joe, I may be seventy three,
but I act like I'm forty three. I've heard every

(17:26):
story from every player. It is nothing you can tell
me that I haven't heard. I said, so, I have
you got a problem. If you want to get something
off your chest, tell me. I'm going to act like.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
A forty three year old for you.

Speaker 7 (17:37):
So you know, I think I can adjust to just
about anything, because you have to adjust today.

Speaker 3 (17:43):
You see it all the time in the game.

Speaker 7 (17:46):
I've seen the game change from Bobby Knight total motion
to a triangle offense that we Phill Jackson in the NBA.
Look at everybody would copy the triangle offense. Now it's
big men stepping away from the basket and shooting threes,
playing five out. So it's all changed. But you have
to change with the times because it's all different. No

(18:09):
different than the NFL. The way the NFL game is played.
He used to be running back off tackle, Jim Brown
running off tackle and taking people with him.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
And now it's wide outs more than anything else. So
all the sports change.

Speaker 7 (18:21):
The coaches that don't want to change get out, and
I wasn't ready to get out because they took two
years off and my golf wasn't very good some of
the things. Going to the racetrack, I was losing too
much money, so I like to keep the money in
my pocket and coach basketball.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Were you betting the ponies in Greece, by the.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Way, No, No, this is in Miami.

Speaker 7 (18:45):
I was going to once or twice a week to
Gulf Stream and giving my deposit to them to keep
the economy moving.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
Beautiful part of Florida. By the way, Rick has always
an absolute pleasure. Great stuff. Good luck to Saint John's
thanks Colin.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Good speaking with you all right.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Always entertaining. I mean, he's just got great energy. It's like,
you can see why I can recruit. He's got great energy.
I love he's got players from Ghana, overseas, He's got
players from here. That's fun. J Mack. Got to hit
your free throws, cross the t's, dot the eyes and
hit your free thro You know you glean any information
for your tournament.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
Yeah, I'm gonna fade his gambling ponies picks and become
extremely wealthy.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
I will say your port about the energy.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
I wanted to look up his age.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
Seventy three years old. That's impressive. You know a lot
of our elected officials they get a late seventies and
it's like, oh boy, here we go. This guy at
seventy three. He's still got it. Nah. Same, John's not
a bad team this year. No, it's not bad at all.
They split with Yukon. Indeed, there you go. We got
a lot of stuff. Oh I got top of next hour,

(19:51):
not messing around. Very excited for this my mock draft.
I fired up. I'm gonna throw you a curveball at
the number two pick, and it makes a lot of sense.
Don't scoff the number two. You don't if you believe
what you're reading on these mock drafts. I'll tell you
what the Jets are going to do and what they
should do. That's coming up.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
One more Heard The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd
to listen live or on demand. Whenever you lie.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
This is not a traditional mock draft. They do this
every year. I do one where you know, I try
to guess what teams do. But my take is I
don't know. Nobody does outside of the number one pick.
This year, everybody knows that. So I am going to
draft based on what I would do as general manager,
and I think it will look mostly like the first

(20:45):
fifteen picks. I'm going to go fifteen picks. So let's
start with the number one pick. That's the easiest one.
The Raiders need a quarterback. Fernando Mendoza is easily the
best quarterback prospect. Is he Matt Ryan plus Heisman winner
sixteen to zero at a non traditional power, big arm,

(21:07):
moves well, humble gratitude, and you get that rookie quarterback
contract for the next four to five years, So that's
the easy one. He goes number one. My second pick
is a little different than everybody else's mom. I think
the Jets draft David Bailey the best pure edge He'll

(21:30):
walk into the Jets. On one side, you'll have Will
McDonald on the other, it's David Bail. I hear about
rvel rees rvel rees projects as an edge rusher. I
don't trust the Jets to get that right. This guy
is a plug play guy. He will be starting the
first week. David Bailey from Texas Tech. He went to Stanford,

(21:51):
then he was on the market. Texas Tech got out
the wallet. He is an immediate play day one edge rusher.
Number three Arizona. I think Arizona should call on Fernando Mendoza.
But their o line is a wreck. They have a
new offensive coach. What a offensive coach is like Ben Johnson?
Do solve the offensive line? Francis Mawiinoah from Miami. He

(22:16):
can play interior or tackle. They may use him at both.
The Cardinals had the twenty six ranked offensive line. He
has slid and run in pass blocking. An offensive coach,
They've got receivers and backs and tight ends. They have
got to get that O line solved. Whether Jacoby brussat

(22:36):
or rumored. Jimmy Garoppolo is the quarterback Number four rvel
reees Now again, many have him at two to the Jets.
I don't trust the Jets. I do trust Robert Sala
to use him in maybe a little bit of a
hybrid Fred Warner, Nick Bosa roll I trust. I think
he's just too talented to fall. And again he's six

(22:58):
four two forty four four. Titans only had one player
with more than five sacks last year, So I think
he's just too talented for Robert solid to pass on.
They've got their quarterback and they've got other needs, but
I think they go get the Ohio State edge. Number
five Giants. This is a good pick for them. They
need secondary help. Caleb Downs best safety in the draft.

(23:21):
I mean, you know, he's pretty good in coverage. You
can bring him as you see here on blitzes like
Nick Ahman Warri who went to the Seahawks second round
out of South Carolina. He's a tremendous player. John Harbaugh
is going to love him. You can play him probably
special teams in defense. Day one ranked Giants were an
atrocious team last year thirty first against the run. This

(23:44):
kid didn't even have to perform at the combine. He
is that good Giants who I have projected is winning
their division. Get the number one back end defensive player
in the draft. Caleb Downs another Buckeye, Number six Cleveland Browns,
Carnel Tate played at Ohio State. Their receiving course a mess.
Shadure Sanders probably get and Shadur Sanders capable of throwing

(24:07):
the ball down the field, but Jerry Judy is inconsistent,
drop issues, maturity issues. Carneal Taate kind of feels like
a can't miss guy to me, I mean, I don't
think there's many can't miss guys in the draft. I
can't believe it if not for Cleveland, somebody else, a
lot of Buckeyes at the top. I think he walks
in Jerry Judy one side, Carnell Tait on the other.

(24:29):
They had an atroci. I mean, their leading receiver last
year was a rookie tight end from Bowling Green. Carnell
Tate to the Browns. Number seven best corner in the
draft is out of Lsu Mansour Delane. I think the Commanders,
who have many issues, they were a really bad team
was Washington against the pass. He excels outside the numbers

(24:49):
in man coverage. I mean Lsu has always been a
cornerback in a wide receiver factory, great instincts, excellent lane,
best corner in the draft. A team Washington that needs it.
He goes at seven, number eight. Tyger Schuck was surprisingly
good for the Saints. Rookie quarterback second round pick. I

(25:09):
think they get Jeremiah Love. He's the Jamiir Gibbs of
this draft. A home run hitter. I mean Alvin Kamara
is now thirty and rush for under five hundred yards.
And they were not a good run team. They were
near the bottom twenty eighth in the NFL against the run.
So Love is a again like David Bailey at number two.

(25:30):
He's a plug and play guy. Put him in run
game with a second year quarterback they couldn't run last year.
Alvin Kamara is aging. He goes to the Saints at eight.
Number nine. The Chiefs who made that Trent McDuffie trade
with the Rams. Today they have two first rounders. I
think the Chiefs go and get Spencer Finot out of

(25:52):
Utah right tackle, so they've got their left tackle. They
don't have a right tackle he was. I mean Utah
has are you'll be two of the best tackles in
the whole draft. They were twenty fifth and rushing twenty
eight in pressure, So they've got a They've got a
lot of needs right now in Kansas City, but I
think number one is protecting Patrick Mahomes and getting that

(26:13):
running game going. So if love falls to them, I
could see them taking love from Notre Dame. If not,
they'll go with a right tackle from Utah. Number ten, Cincinnati,
my guess is they'll take a buck guy, Sunny Styles,
who had an unbelievable combine. Trey Hendrickson's out the door,
He's he can play. I mean, Sunny Styles is one

(26:34):
of those guys. He was a combined monster. You know,
on any other team he would have been the best
player easily, But on Ohio State he's a third or
fourth best player. You know, six' five two forty, five
runs a four to. Four you, know Typical buckeye, elite
five star level. Talent SO i think he stays in.
State number Eleven, Dolphins Ruben, BAIN i think drops To.

(26:58):
MIAMI i think they'll have some pressure to go get
a guy with short arms, historically but he's just a
ball or he's a, playmaker and The hurricane fan base
is going to absolutely love. This miami doesn't get pressure
on the. Quarterback they were twenty fifth in THE nfl
last year and getting pressure on the. Quarterback and you,
KNOW i don't know how Good Ruben bain is with

(27:19):
the arm, issue BUT i know every TIME i Watched miami,
play he was, unblockable a relentless, player kind of A
Max crosby, engine kind of a game changer up. Front
SO i Think miami grabs him at number, twelve AND
i think this will be one of the early steals
in the. Draft The Dallas cowboys will Get Keldrick fulk From,
auburn a great character. Guy just gotten. Me he was

(27:43):
like ALL sec freshman. Team he's been good for years At,
auburn very good against the. Run character guy in the.
Building AND i think they're sensitive to that In dallas
BECAUSE i think you Know Dak, prescott high character, guy
has always been somebody That Jerry jones, Liked Mike parsons
viewed is a little Into. Mica this kid is. Great
they need an edge. Rusher he can defend the, run

(28:06):
in the, pass he's a, grinder he's a character. GUY
i think he goes to The cowboys and they get
themselves a little bit of a first round. Steal number,
Thirteen La. RAMS i think they Go Mackay. Lemon now
they've got needs at, tackle But lemon can solve two.
Issues Davonte adams is thirty, three so he's the air
apparent To Devonte. Adams this kid is. Unbelievable if he

(28:29):
gets his hand on, it he catches. It you, know
there's a lot of these recruits that don't pan. Out
he has been sensational and over delivered for The, trojans
AND i think Between Devonte adams, age they also want
to clean up their punt. Returning he's got impeccable, hands

(28:50):
almost one hundred yards per game for The. Trojans number,
FOURTEEN i think The ravens they're gonna have to Pay Lamar.
Jackson they get to find some guys on that offense
that don't cost. Much Kenyon sadiq From, oregon who just
had the fastest forty time ever for a tight. End
he's a little, undersized but Remember Isaiah, likely The ravens tight,

(29:13):
end is a free. Agent Mark andrews is getting older
and they were top three in THE nfl in twelve.
Personnel they like to use multiple tight ends it you,
know The rams, do The ravens.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
Do.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
SO i think The oregon tight end who's undersized but
a little bit of a. Bully he's hard to hard
matchup for corners in, safeties he goes to The ravens
and number fifteen The Tapa Bay. Buccaneers they've got several
needs edge, rusher among Them TEXAS a AND. M Cassius
howell first Team All american At TEXAS a AND. M

(29:48):
it is a good edge rusher. Draft he is a
need of which they. Have you, know they have a
need at, corner, linebacker. Edge they got to rebuild that.
Defense so there is my verse fifteen.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
Draft be sure to catch live editions of The herd
weekdays and noon eastern non Am.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Pacific we Had Rick patino on yesterday and he was.
Great and By gonzaga's, standards even though they've WON i
think twenty two to twenty, three they're twenty eight and,
three they're kind of under the radar For gonzaga. Standards
And Mark few who has a pretty high standard. Himself
two Time National coach of The. Year you, KNOW i

(30:26):
Had patino on. Yesterday he's a pretty good. Coach i'm
not sure you heard of. Him he's a pretty good.
Coach AND i asked, HIM i, said you, know a
lot of these guys get older and they get out
of this. Business And i'm, like you're still firing. Away
and he's, like, listen you got to. Adapt he, Goes
i've got guys From ghana And, europe he's got five,
continents and you still have amazing. Energy AND i, think

(30:49):
knowing you a little, BIT i think one of the
things you're good is. Adaptability so And patino kind of
laughed at. It he was, LIKE i got so Many european.
Players give me IF i said to, you over the
last three, years mark you've had to Make you've had
to adapt with something with the nil and transfer. Port
what is the one thing you've had to totally adapt?

Speaker 6 (31:10):
To, well first of, all great job of kissing up
to the bosses and name dropping in the last you,
know forty five.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Seconds mission.

Speaker 8 (31:20):
Accomplished, well awesome.

Speaker 6 (31:24):
Question hard to maybe say that one, thing you, KNOW
i would say kind of the you, know as you,
know following us all these, years we red shirt guys
and we got them in our program three four or
five yep, years and that was the, standard Right and
now kind of looking, AROUND i got a bunch of
one year guys that are either freshmen or, transfers and

(31:47):
maybe a two.

Speaker 8 (31:48):
Year guy here and.

Speaker 6 (31:48):
There but, yeah just the general continuity in college. Basketball
and that could, be you.

Speaker 8 (31:55):
Know also due to guys leaving early for THE nba
and all.

Speaker 6 (31:57):
That but that's been the hardest THING i think think
is just always fighting for your culture even.

Speaker 8 (32:03):
Though like you're looking around and like you've got to
explain it to these. Guys, yeah you, know and they
haven't experienced it.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
Yet. Yeah you, know your front court scoring is big this,
year not as much in the back. Court and WHEN
i think Of, GONZAGA i kind of always think of
balance from the bench. On but it feels like to,
me a lot of your scoring this year is front
court instead of. Backcourt does that you know everybody talks

(32:29):
about guard play in the. Tournament does that concern you at?

Speaker 6 (32:32):
All?

Speaker 8 (32:33):
Yeah of, course, yeah yeah it. Does and our back
court play has been you, know spectacular at times and
then not so spectacular at, times and so.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
It.

Speaker 8 (32:47):
Does but you, KNOW i think back to your point about.

Speaker 6 (32:50):
ADAPTABILITY i think you, know over the, years we've been
front court, dominated we've been backcourt, dominated we've been great balance.
Dominated if you think of that twenty one, team and
you know this year we got a fantastic interior player
And GRAMMY. K we had two of, them With Bradon
huff And GRAMMY. K i think yet probably call them
been the biggest story to us this. Year we've never

(33:11):
faced the level of adversity via injuries that we have this.
YEAR i, Mean Brandon huff's A national Caliber award guy
and for him to be out this long than we've
Lost Jalen worley and.

Speaker 8 (33:22):
We even Lost ek for a.

Speaker 6 (33:23):
While.

Speaker 8 (33:24):
Yep so it's been really.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
Strange patino was saying yesterday with the NI l bringing
kids From europe over that he doesn't remember college basketball
being this deep and. STRONG i Watched michigan Last friday Play.
Illinois it's like AN. Nba they're. Huge you guys played
them and got kind of. ROLLED i, MEAN i don't

(33:47):
sure how you prepare for. Them what did you make
Of michigan the odds on, Favorite, well.

Speaker 6 (33:53):
They were terrific tonight we played Them the one thing
they did that night THAT i think is they're just
their slight this little hiccup in their you know, team
and it's not really even a, hiccup but they shot
the ball extremely. Well they shot the cover off that against,
us And dust even said so. Afterwards but their, size

(34:13):
you're so, right IS i, mean IT'S nba level size quite,
frankly with the bodies and everything they're, playing you, Know
luxembourg at the, three you, know and he's probably six'
nine to fifty or something and great size around, the rim,
great plan moved the ball. Really well they were spectacular

(34:34):
in transition. Back then, and again, you know in, that
game you're three games in. Three days you don't really
have a whole lot of time to prepare. For him
the teams in their league have starting to kind of
game plan for him a.

Speaker 8 (34:44):
Little bit.

Speaker 6 (34:45):
They're, good tommy my, Old Assistant tommy lloyd's having a
great Year.

Speaker 8 (34:49):
At arizona, they're very. Very good there's some really really
nice teams.

Speaker 6 (34:53):
Out there when we get, TOTALLY healthy i think we
can compete with any, of them.

Speaker 8 (34:58):
You know but in, THE meantime i give this group
a lot.

Speaker 6 (35:00):
Of, Credit man we've just been hanging in there and,
winning games even though we've been down some pretty.

Speaker 1 (35:04):
Key personnel by, THE way i was thinking about you
the other Day because skryzhevsky put You. In beheim, you
know you guys Were the. Olympic coaches you guys Have
always You and beheim are Close and beheim got a lot.
Of Crap but i'll say This. For beheim He, Leaves
syracuse well what Happened to? Syracuse THERE and i asked
you Once about John kla perry and, you're, like, you

(35:25):
guys he's a. Great coach it's funny that people get
certain labels. In coaching and now all you, COLLEGE guys
i think college feels a little more pro with all the.
International stuff has it changed you as a coach dealing
sometimes there's. LANGUAGE barriers a lot Of the european guys
aren't used to they're not as, Good defensively, patino said

(35:47):
some of these guys couldn't. Guard me has it changed
you as? A?

Speaker 6 (35:51):
COACH no I mean I think i hate to just,
you know as, you know just throw out stereotypes. In
general as, you Know some bonus was, a fierce fierce
uh tough As income uh You know, bernowski was, you
know he made his big impact on the defensive end.
As anybody he might Even Been defensive player Of, the

(36:13):
year and that year he should.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
Have.

Speaker 6 (36:14):
Been uh so you know it's it's it's uh, an individual,
THE individual i, would say having done and having all
the great EXPERIENCES with, usa basketball the uh this this high,
turnover rate uh to what, you said. The, adaptability boy
you sure learn from, those guys, you know how to

(36:34):
adapt with just, you know their rosters are always changing
AT the, nba level.

Speaker 8 (36:38):
And guys are out and load managing and and doing.
All this oh.

Speaker 6 (36:44):
That's REALLY helped i think and just maybe maybe a
little more patience and and uh maybe, understanding, that, hey
well you know we're not going to click like maybe
our twenty one.

Speaker 8 (36:55):
Team did or our our nineteen team.

Speaker 6 (36:57):
Or whatever but, you know there's some things we do
really really well that are a little different maybe than
some of.

Speaker 8 (37:02):
Those teams we're a really really good defensive team. This
year it's a little.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
Bit UNDERRATED the nil has it made some players harder?

Speaker 6 (37:11):
To coach, YOU know i was really leary of that
and watching it really CLOSELY and i and, my, experience no,
YOU know i mean it's.

Speaker 8 (37:23):
Just, now listen man's it is a royal pain in.

Speaker 6 (37:26):
The rear here when we hit the, off season like you,
wouldn't believe because literally we have. NO rules, i mean
you could sign with me tomorrow and then, you know
sign with somebody else a week, from now and and
so there's we literally have no rules.

Speaker 8 (37:41):
RIGHT now i think that's the hardest thing this. Roster building.

Speaker 6 (37:46):
But you know what once, like practice once you get into,
your mode you have your team in the fall and you.
START practicing i haven't noticed any difference along. Those lines,
you know There is colin though this there is the
different it's of uh, YOU know i mean you just
you're not maybe quite as hard on guys as used

(38:07):
to be back in, the past challenging them.

Speaker 1 (38:09):
And, stuff yeah because they. Can bail but. YOU don't
i mean you. DON'T recruit, i mean you don't recruit
a lot of high. MAINTENANCE guys, i, mean yeah. You
don't you don't have that that's not REALLY your, i
mean if you Go, to gonzaga you got to leave
your ego at.

Speaker 6 (38:22):
THE door, I MEAN i i, you, know, right, yeah, yeah,
yeah hey, and, listen now hope to go into shameless
self promotion of. Something here but we have this wonderful
documentary that just was done On gun, zaga basketball and
they premiered it the other NIGHT and i, watched it
and it brought home so many of these points of

(38:43):
what our program's, all about, You know and one of
it was, that was, you know we.

Speaker 8 (38:47):
Don't deal with high maintenance and and you.

Speaker 6 (38:52):
Know you're here to, you know there's a, culture here
and there's a family, atmosphere here there's a work ethic
here that's, just innate and everybody just kind of buys.

Speaker 8 (38:59):
Into it it was great to have our current guys
sit through that thing and. Watch it so.

Speaker 6 (39:04):
Many, of them, you know you think they, know it but.
They DON'T and i don't want, to bory but the
BEST story i got out that we have A transfer
Ty On grant FOSTER and, I, said ty what was
the biggest thing you took out? Of that and, he's Like,
COACH man i couldn't Believe That adam morrison was at

(39:24):
the thing, last night, You KNOW and i, Was, like ty,
you know he's our radio guy and is at half
our meals on the road and walking around here and
he's around the Gym and.

Speaker 8 (39:34):
HE'S like i didn't even. Recognize him he remembered him
with long hair and, the mustache and he had. NO
idea i.

Speaker 6 (39:42):
Don't know so sometimes it's good to be just reminded
of what this place has been, all about what it,
stands for and why we've kind of had the run.

Speaker 1 (39:50):
WE'VE had i don't even know how old. You are
you're in great shape and you're like you work out
and you. Bike everywhere how long are you going to?

Speaker 6 (39:57):
Do this?

Speaker 9 (39:59):
Oh man as long as it's it's still you, Know something,
i'd say something that you enjoy and how can you,
not enjoy, you know being around athletics like you, you
know like, you too, you know we're you get to talk,
about it around it all, the time.

Speaker 6 (40:14):
YOU know i, would say as LONG when i quit
feeling Like maybe i'm having this big impact on him
and and not, you know helping them grow as much
as as, You can i'd say that would be that
that's going to be the big kind of flection point.

Speaker 1 (40:28):
For me who's the best player you play? This year
in the? Sport single best player? You Faced?

Speaker 6 (40:34):
Oh man luxembourg was terrific. Against us he hit the
first jump shot right in front, of me and uh
and was JUST physically i thought he was he was.
The best, we haven't, you know teed it up against
any of. These freshmen they're having some, great years but,
you know there's some veterans out there that are having

(40:54):
some great YEARS that i think are getting a little
overlooked with all this.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
Freshman, hype, yeah hey Do you i'm not into. This
term i'm. AN expansion i don't. LIKE it i don't
even like the first four nonsense Start, on thursday sixty.
Four teams, i'm good don't confuse my. SMALL brain i don't.
Want it what do you Make of what do you make?
Of expansion i'm with you.

Speaker 8 (41:14):
ON it i don't think it needs to be watered.

Speaker 6 (41:17):
Down ANYMORE and i, YOU know i don't want to
dilute the, regular season, YOU know i want this last
month where people are are really sweating it and scratching
to get into this thing and make it something that's
really really prestigious to just to. Get into to have
your name called On. Selection sunday that's still a big
thing to me To see gonzaga pop up there On.

(41:40):
Selection SUNDAY and, i think, you know adding more is
just going to water.

Speaker 1 (41:46):
It down his winning percentage is eighty. Three percent that's. Pretty.
Good oh, You See kevin durant said he plans to
play In the Olympics In. Los angeles You know katie.
Pretty well what was he like.

Speaker 6 (41:59):
To awesome, this awesome, awesome guy just a wonderful player
and just a. Great teammate he was, so great uh as,
a teammate and and, the uh the synergy between Him
And anthony edwards was. Just Priceless, anthony edwards, you know

(42:20):
grew up idolizing THE uh kd and.

Speaker 8 (42:23):
And uh they were kind of on the floor together
a lot with our our our one of.

Speaker 6 (42:28):
Our groups and it was fun to Watch even ant
kind of defer to him a little bit and get
such great joy when HE saw kd hit a jumper and.

Speaker 8 (42:37):
Just You know steph's threes, and uh You Know louel.

Speaker 6 (42:41):
Sinders Skyhook kevin durant's pull up man has to go
down as one of the, most legendary, you know iconic
shots in all of. BASKETBALL history i think it's about
as automatic as you.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
Can.

Speaker 1 (42:53):
GET yeah, i said if you take out centers and
you had an all time one on, ONE tournament i
would TAKE k d to EVEN, beat MJ because i
DON'T think mj could, stop HIM and i DON'T think
i Don't think lebron could shoot. WITH him I think
kd individually is as good an. Offensive player i'm not
talking about, YOU know i Don't want shack in my
one on one Tournament. Or kareem but if you took

(43:14):
all the, Other players i've never seen a. Guy score
maybe you have because you coach pros and it looks.
So easy you can give him the ball in the
last second half of the. Shot clock he gets an.

Speaker 6 (43:25):
Effortless jumper he can get it off on anybody anytime.
He wants, you know he can get that shot off
no matter what defense. You're in but let's, posterhor say
let's not discount, You know lebron in one, on one
he's still got, that heart he still got, that brain
he still got. THAT toughness i wouldn't count him out
on any sport where you're.

Speaker 8 (43:45):
Keeping Score Mark few.

Speaker 1 (43:47):
Gonzaga coach, as always you know it's okay to suck
up to your bosses once in. A while you're a.
Powerful coach you don't have to suck up to Your
ad i'm still just trying to get by here and get.
A check all, right.

Speaker 8 (43:59):
Out, yeah right killing it in the, ratings thing demanding
a Move. To CHICAGO like, i say you're doing okay. For,
Yourself hey i'm going to the state tournament Today. In
washington you remember?

Speaker 1 (44:13):
Those days where's It? At ST Mary's Us, Ta Comodome?

Speaker 6 (44:17):
Ta comodome, SO yeah i figured you'd remember those days
back in the old.

Speaker 1 (44:22):
Stumping grounds, oh, Yeah boy i'd get on. A heater
you couldn't, stop me that's. FOR sure a little crossover
pull up couldn't. Stop, me.

Speaker 6 (44:32):
Right.

Speaker 1 (44:32):
That's right good, Seeing, You mark yeah.

Speaker 8 (44:35):
You too call him
