Instant reaction in what was an ugly performance twenty three

(01:06):
point fifteen, Miami beats Sean mcvay's La Rams. I've said
this for a long time, and I don't say it often,
but I always felt third down was the most underrated
stat in football. If you're good on third down, it
tells me so much about your team, your coaching, your
offensive line. And tonight this game was all about the

(01:29):
Dolphins being great on third down offensively and even better
on third down defensively. And they came into this game.
The Dolphins defense was thirty first in sacks and they
came into this game and got four or five tonight,
constant pressure on Stafford. So the Rams offensive line was
the healthiest it had been all season. Now, Rob Havenstein,

(01:51):
the right tackle really good, was out and it didn't help,
but it was the interior line was finally healthy. So
it was. It was a interesting game in which McVeigh Stafford,
Kyen Williams pooka Cooper Cup. They're excellent, excellent teams on
a winning streak. They're at home, Miami had to fly
cross country, second road game. Everything told to the Rams

(02:13):
would perform, and the Rams played that was as bad
as a Sean mcvayh team has played at home healthy
that I can remember. They did nothing right on third down.
They also Miami, and I didn't check if they got
a penalty in the last minute. But they had one
penalty all night. That's pretty remarkable. You know again, long

(02:36):
cross country flight, don't have a lot of your fans
here and just one penalty, great on third down. That's
your ball game, and you know it's it's I don't
want to overreact to one game. I don't think either
of these teams are top ten teams. But I thought
the Rams were ready. It was a stinker tonight. But
if you look at Miami's schedule, the Miami Dolphins have

(02:59):
a lot of winnable games coming up. They're still in
the playoff race. Raiders, Patriots, Jets twice, Browns, Niners at
home at Texans, but it's indoor, indoor game two has
been better at those So the schedule really works out
for the Miami Dolphins, who, of course got off to
a rocky start because too I had the concussion. But
you know, you watch them tonight, you watch the pass

(03:20):
rush tonight. You know the Rams are such a weird team.
They did really difficult things. Cooper Cup had one of
the catches of the year. Stafford had a couple of
unbelievable gem throws. Yet the simple stuff like hiking the
Bald to Stafford was a challenge tonight. It was such
a weird performance, one of the worst Sean McVay healthy
team performances at home. I remember, just a dud all

(03:42):
the way around. I will say I noticed somebody online
was talking about how quiet Sofi Stadium was. And I'm
not here to defend LA as a sports town. I
don't think it's the best sports town in the country.
I think anytime you have a beach San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami,
the beach becomes a pro sports team you're competing against
on a nice day. With average teams, people go to

(04:04):
the beach lots to do in Miami, San Diego and
Los Angeles, so you know they're teams that are located
in great weather cities or beach cities are are going
to bail on average teams faster. And I just think
that's the reality of it. So you can't call LA
a bad sports town. They were missing the NFL for

(04:28):
twenty years, which is just hard to get wrapped your
brain around. As the second biggest city in the country,
from nineteen ninety five to twenty fifteen, they didn't have
the NFL. Well the Washington Nationals, you have the Senators,
and then that long vacancy for major League baseball in
DC until the Nationals. Well, guess what, the Nationals don't
draw right now, the Dodgers draw twice as much as

(04:49):
the Nationals forty twenty four thousand, and I think, I
think baseball is a challenge in DC people. It's just
not part of generations lives. Whereas in Los Angeles they
a lead Major League Baseball for several years in a row,
could be a decade straight in attendance. In fact, they
averaged seven thousand more for Dodger games than any other
team in baseball, the Yankees, I believe, or second. So

(05:10):
when you live in Los Angeles, it's an unbelievable baseball town.
It's the best baseball town I've ever lived in. Yet.
I lived in Tampa, and I thought it was a
great college football town, a great NASCAR town, a great
NFL town, didn't care about basketball, didn't really care about baseball,
Hockey was hit and miss. But LA is a great
baseball town, a great NBA town, and it's not. You know,

(05:31):
the Rams are in the middle of the pack. The Chargers,
Rams are both in the middle of the pack for attendants.
But it's not you know, it's just it's it's a
city that there's a lot to do. It's not an excuse.
If you look at most great college football towns, they're
in small towns. You know, Norman, Oklahoma, Athens, Georgia. You
know that's that's ann Arbor, Michigan. There's just not as

(05:53):
much to do. And therefore, you know, the local university
is really the entertainment center. You may have, you know,
you know, a local theater, place to go watch some
plays occasionally or something, but it's like, you know, the
teams are the local entertainment. And in Los Angeles, you know,
it's you just got so much stuff going on here,
so you have to be good and you have to

(06:15):
be exciting. So I don't want to bang on Los
Angeles as a sports down or Miami. I mean, Miami's
got the best beaches in the country. You know, the
Dolphins when they're playing well, draw well. The Miami Heat
have drawn well. It's a tough baseball city, I don't think,
to be honest with you, Arizona and Miami and the
state of Florida didn't have baseball for a long time.
Why it's too hot. I mean, there was a reason

(06:37):
that you know, spring training. Spring training was in the
state of Florida, but not major League Baseball teams forever.
It's too damn hot, and so it's weird in a
warm day to go inside. I mean, I just again,
I think I look at SOFI Stadium, Rams, Chargers both
draw Okay, I think going forward, the Chargers with Harball

(06:58):
will draw better. I think the are about a year away,
another draft away from being a really special team if
Stafford stays around. He's thirty six years old. But it's hard,
you know. You look at LA and Miami and people
just crap on them as sports cities. You don't have
a beach, you don't have their weather, you don't have
the options. So you know, that's just you know, you
go to cold weather cities like Buffalo, yes they're great

(07:18):
sports fans, or Green Bay, there's not a lot to
do there, especially in the fall. In the winter it
gets cold, you're gonna either sit inside and watch your
team on television or are you gonna go to the game.
So just just defending towns with great weather, cities with
great Mediterranean weather and beaches and lots of options, you know,

(07:39):
I was. It was a crazy weekend. So this weekend
I saw Bonecks outplay Patrick Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium. I
watched really the rebirth of Russell Wilson. I watched Drake
May with no talent, outplay Caleb Williams with lots of
offensive talent. I watched both with Kyle shanahan and Sean

(08:02):
McVeigh out coached by Todd Bowles and Mike McDaniel. It
was a great underdog weekend. And I officially believe the
Dallas Cowboys are the worst team in the NFL. I
think Carolina and the Giants are slightly better. So it
was just a it was a crazy week and it
was in college football as well. It's hard to get

(08:23):
you wrap your brain around how bad Georgia was against
Old Miss, But I don't, you know. I think when
you look at the NFL today, we think there's more
movement at the top of the league than there really is.
My favorite teams right now Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia,

(08:43):
San Francisco's close, Pittsburgh's a bit of a surprise. Chargers
with Harby I think are somewhere in that seven eight
six seven eight slot. But it was It's just it's
the NFL gives you mostly what you think is zany
weekly result, and this was a strange weekend. But if
you look at the divisions, best coaches and best quarterbacks

Speaker 1 (10:18):
You know another thing I thought about. I'm interviewing Jim
Gray tomorrow for the Paul Tyson Fight on Netflix, and
I was discussing this with my wife. I said, I really,
I'm not sure who's going to win the fight. Kobe
Bryant's last game, he was unstoppable, you know. Brett Farv

(10:42):
in his last season had unbelievable plays. We love to
sort of cancel out or get rid of star athletes,
but in my years of talking to or watching aged
pro athletes, is that even the ones that don't take

(11:05):
great care of themselves or the ones that age quickly,
they still have moments. And I look at Mike Tyson,
and I look at his training, and the other day
I saw a clip I watched about two three minutes
on YouTube his training, and Mike Tyson could knock out
ninety nine out of one hundred tough guys at UFC.

(11:29):
You know, they got into a boxing match, he'd knock
out ninety nine of one hundred on the first punch.
I mean he's he's not a UFC fighter, but I
mean Mike's training. Mike's a pro athlete, and I think
sometimes we just forget how how much different pro athletes are.
You know, I'll talk to Drew Bledsoe, who's a friend.

(11:51):
Drew Bledsoe right now could spin a forty yard ball
out route on a dime. He wouldn't go through camp,
he wouldn't take it hits very well. He's lost the
ability to train at a high level for long periods
of time. But give him a football, let him spin
it down the field, give him a few warm up tosses.

(12:11):
He looked like he plays in the NFL today. And
I always tell the story of years and years ago,
I was watching a show. It was like a Saturday afternoon,
and it was just it was a make believe show.
I thought it was so fun to watch because I
played flag football like many of you did in college.
And they took it was three on three flag football.
They took the National champions, three guys from San Diego

(12:33):
and they play all the time. And they took three
old NFL players. Now I remember James Lofton was one
of the NFL players. He'd been retired for years. I
think the quarterback was Ken O'Brien apologies to can if
I'm wrong, and it was Kellen Winslow. I think. So
they took these old guys, you know, they got little.

(12:54):
You know, they're retired, they're old or in their forties,
and they'd never practice or played three on three football
flag football ever. So and these other guys were athletic,
they were good athletes. They were athletic. And one practice
for the National Champions against three old NFL guys and

(13:15):
the NFL guys beat him. And so now if they'd
have played for four hours, maybe the three on you know,
the three man amateur team would have won. But you
start going to these last couple of games. I mean,
Tom Brady was forty five years old and could still
spin it to the very end. So I think about
that with Paul and Mike Tyson. Paul's a big, tough guy,

(13:39):
a YouTuber. When I've watched him fight, he didn't have
a lot of natural fighting talent. He's a big, strong,
tough guy who's worked very hard at it. I think
you have to take him seriously. I respect the fact
that he's worked his butt off. Mike Tyson looks like
a pro athlete, an old pro athlete. So my tape.
Maybe I'm wrong on this. I could be completely wrong
on this, but my takeaway is all it's gonna take

(14:02):
is one combination by Tyson. If he lands a left
the chin of Paul's out, Paul can hit Tyson. Tyson's
a small moves pretty well. When I watched his training footage,
Paul comes in without just a bruising right. But I
just can't get away from the fact that when I
watched Mike Tyson's video, as long as this fight is

(14:24):
on the up and up, I just now I think
Mike will be very, very good in the first round,
maybe in the second. If the thing goes to a
third round, then all of a sudden, you know, Mike
sixty one, he gets exhausted, his hands are down, and
maybe Paul's in better shape he should be at his age.
But I just never doubt pro athletes. They're different than

(14:48):
you and I. I mean, I've gone, you know, I've
gone to events in my life pro ams or I
used to do this Disney weekend at ESPN and then'd
be all sorts of pro athletes, and you know, obviously
covered him for a long time. And one of the
things Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson one of the things

(15:09):
when I when I see pro athletes, Andrew Whitworth walks
into my studio or you know, I had a Dodger
pitcher Jack Fairdy the other day. They're always much bigger
than they look on TV. Like, I've never stood next
to a human being as big as Andrew Whitworth. He
is an effortless sixty seven. At his playing weight was

(15:30):
three ten. And it's not like he was fat. He
was six seven, three ten without a belly. He was
just a gigantic man, just genetically. It's you know, it's
not he wasn't a guy on steroids or you know,
Jim Ratt where you thought it was artificial or synthetic muscle.
It's just big. He's just a big guy. You know.
He used three hundred and ten pounds and a flat stomach,

(15:53):
big hands, big shoulders. So I don't know. I Jake Paul,
I wish you the very very best. I really do, Jake.
I think your pursuit of this, your aspiration of this,
is redeemable, very worthy of praise. A lot of people

(16:15):
have criticized you. I really think you care about it.
But if Mike connects in the first two rounds, it
is goodnight and goodnight. The volume Thursday Night Football is on.
