Speaker 4 (01:49):
Thank you for checking on May I appreciate it. Guys.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
The Venezuela and Vix and Juliana Pane is back UFC
three h seven two years. It's been waiting for this.
You speak about how at times it felt like it
was so far away, but right before you were in
one of the biggest rivalry's division has ever seen. Were
you able to take note of that in the time
of way to just sit back and take it too
(02:12):
how special it was because I got to be honest,
Julian you made me make a sound well when you
want to.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I never made a sound like that in my life.
I never saw it like that. It made me. I
made it sound like I was a little girl.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
At a Tailor Swift concert because it was the most
amazing thing in the unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Yes, were you able to take note of all that
at time?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
It was great?
Speaker 4 (02:33):
It was.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
It was an amazing moment.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
I feel sometimes my my wind gets overshadowed by you
squealing and c and like they care more about that
than they do me actually winning.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
I'm just joking.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
I wasn't able to soak it in as much as
I would have liked because I turned around so quickly and.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Thought right away, I was like, sh I'll do that
again tomorrow. Let's go, you know.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
And I think that I should have gave myself a
little bit more time to enjoy it, to just soak
it in and to actually give my time myself the
time that I needed mentally. But that's okay, because here
we are again climbing up the mountain. If anybody is
a picture perfect of perseverance and determination, it's me.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
You were bullish on it.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I deserve a title fight, Yes, regardless of what other
people said, you were bullish on this is my opportunity.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
I deserve it.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
What made you what made you so certain that it
should be you fighting for the belt?
Speaker 5 (03:23):
Well, I mean, I don't like to dwell on the past,
but if you think about it, when I won the
Ultimate Fighter, they were allowing women to fight in the
UFC at the same time that I was fighting four
girls in one time in that division.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
So it was like I had beat four girls.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
Ronda Rousei had just come into the division and they
just gifted her a belt.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
And I was like, I just beat four girls. I
should be fighting for the title.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
So then after I had an injury for two years,
I tore my knee. I came back and I won,
and then I won again against Jessica I, and then
I won again against Kazi Ghano. So I was fighting
girls in the top five of the division and I
felt a title shot, you know, And then I lost one.
They said, well, if you don't beat Valentina ship Chenko,
then you're not gonna fight for the title. And I'm thinking,
how many more girls do you guys want me to fight?
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Yeah, and beat you know.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
So I felt like I was falling on deaf Ears.
I unfortunately lost to Valentina, but it was a blessing
in disguise because I had my baby and I would
I wouldn't trade my baby for a belt any day
of the week, So it ended up being a blessing
for me that I had my daughter more time off.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
And then after coming.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
Back from having a baby, I beat Nico Montano on
two weeks notice, and I was like, I want a
title shot.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
That is actually the most like Nico Montano. Her story
is the crazy story.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
I was on one of the toughest because I've ever really yeah,
you know what's crazy. I was walking through the APEX
the other day or the PI and I walked past
that wall with all the champions, and I saw Nico
and I was like, oh my god, it's almost like
you forget right, Like, yeah, she was a champion, Jermaine
de Randomy champion.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
It's hard to be just forgotten like that.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
But that was a tough fight and you got through
another champion and ultimately led to a title fight.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Getting me to this point, Yes, sir, you had one
of the greatest rivalries.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
When you left, you and Amanda left the division in
a good place.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
It was in a really good.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Place in terms of people wanting to watch it, people
knowing what it was, and the Raquel Pennington fought against
the girl that.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Meyra Bornis Silva. It was bad. It was a bad fight, yeah,
right to the.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Point that people like your boy Ryan Clark said, if
that is the bestest division has to offer, we should
cancel it. How hard was it for you to watch
that with the belief that you're the best iness division?
Speaker 5 (05:41):
It was very difficult because I was like, you're celebrating
like that was some amazing feat, you know what I mean?
And that was just like such an incredible fight, and
to me, I was like falling asleep, you know. Even
Myra Borna Silva was falling at kids, literally like on
the canvas like this chilling, like she's tanning on Miami Beach.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
You know. So I was like, what am I watch
you here?
Speaker 5 (06:02):
For me, it was like I just pictured it in
my head as an interim title because I felt like
that wasn't really indicative of the division's best.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
So that's that's how I felt personally.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
But then when you see that, right, what do you
think happened? Because Raquel Pennington has falltoed the belt before
she had another opportunity. Do you think the safety came
from just not knowing if she would ever get another chance?
Because when you got your chance, it was guns blazing
from the very start, right as most do.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
When presented with that opportunity.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
What do you think happened to a person that has
faught for so long and had been in the championship
opportunity before? Or do you believe that's just her, that
is Rockel Pennington and that was her at her best.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
I do believe that is Rockel Pennington.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
You know, she's very patient, she's very durable, and you know,
unless you stick it to her like I'm going to
or Amanda Nunez, she's just kind of always there.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
And so it's not something that jumps off the page
and you think, oh my gosh, this was incredible. It's
just kind of like, you know, the coasting of the
way that she fights, it's just kind of just that
is Rockel Pennington. It's it's she earned it, She absolutely
earned It was my fault that I couldn't be there,
you know what I mean? And I take one hundred
and ten percent accountability for that I was injured, I
(07:19):
could not go into the fight with Roquel, So I
blame me for that personally. However, you know, when I
watch that, it's again, it's not something that jumps off
the pages where I think, oh my god, I'm gonna
go hide under rock. I don't think I can do it.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
It's like, no, no, I can do this.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I literally told Ryan we were doing the show together
at the time, and I go, if you think Juliana
wanted to kill you, if you ever see Roquel Pennington
after saying the shit you say, she's gonna want to
murder you. And he was like, dude, I'm almost out
of the UFC coverage, so I'll be good. So you
guys on The Ultimate Fighter together, and so it's a
lot of talking, right.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
You said she's the bad roommate.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
You say that you you guys have gone back and
forth generally when that happens, especially on the show.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
The UFC is forcing you guys together. How did it
take so long for this fight to come together?
Speaker 5 (08:13):
You know, I'm not really sure, But like I said,
when I won The Ultimate Fighter, I was on the
trajectory of going up and fighting up the ladder and
fight yeah, and fighting the top three, top five, top
to you know, I was fighting the top girls, the
top contenders in the division. So I don't really know
what she was doing. She said, she's been thinking about
this fight for the last thirteen years. I haven't thought
about you for thirteen years.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
I'd just been going straight up, you know.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
So for me, I've just been focusing on fighting the
best and fighting the champions and doing what I need
to do. I can't really say why this fight hasn't
come together, but it's hilarious now because it's a full
circle moment of it actually coming together. And you know,
everything always has a way of working out in the
in the best way. So I'm just confident in the
way that it is unfolding right now.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
You didn't come here early now with the altitude, and
as someone that I would die every time I went
to Colorado the training for the Olympics, it's worrisome, like,
what did you do right to replicate that, to try
and train yourself to get ready for the altitude. Because
I watched yan Behovich beat Alex Pereira in the first round,
(09:19):
he got tired. You got here right on time. I
watched many fighters do that God. The biggest point Kane
Velaska is when he fought for BRISI over doing Mexicano,
Mexico City, right, the altitude was able to get him
like a bear jumps on your back. What have you
done to try to prepare yourself to deal with the
attitude the altitudes are and the attitude or attitude you'll
(09:43):
give it.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
So there's a few things I fought here before, and
I am accustomed to fighting in Salt Lake. And then
also I fought in Denver, Colorado against Valentina Chefchenko, and
I went out three weeks early for that, and you know,
I brought my whole team. It was a Mike Tyson entourage.
I brought everybody out for the three weeks and we're
living in the airbnb. And when I got there, I
(10:07):
ran and my strength. The condition coach said how do
you feel? And I said, I feel great, and he says, exactly,
I told you, we didn't need to come out here
three weeks.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
If you're in shape, you're in shape. At the end
of the day.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
There's got to be a mental component where you hit
another gear and you say, I don't care, and I
know that. You know, obviously I was very diligent in
practicing my cardio, and my endurance is something that has
carried me into successful moments. So I'm always training for
extra cardio, extra endurance, and making sure that you know,
my battery is always full. With that being said, there's
(10:40):
some things that you do in preparation for that, like
taping your mouth shut and making sure that you can
only breathe through your nose, or doing things with straws
and making sure that you're breathing through a straw so
that you can try to acclimate yourself into these high
altitude areas. I did my cardio workouts when I got here,
and I felt great, and so I just feel like
if you're in shape, you're in shape. And at the
(11:02):
end of the day, I know how to fight. So
just close the cage door and let's get it over with.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
You know. Butlal Mohammed fought probably a perfect fight out
in Manchester.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Yes, I was there, you were there. I know. I remember.
I saw you.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
You heard me screaming.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Yeah, I heard you screaming. I saw you. It's kind
of weird.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
It's crazy that we can actually hear you and wearing
these cans on our ears.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
That just tells you how loud you.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
Are best corner of the game.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
In my opinion, we've seen your guys's team continue to build, right,
What would it mean? Because you see the VFS now
and it's recognizable.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Before it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Right, but that's because the fighters like you and Belaw
and Ignacio and all these athletes. What would it mean
to you guys for a team out of Chicago. It's
not a big team like American top team. And what
would it mean to have two champions?
Speaker 1 (11:51):
I think it would.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
It would mean the world, especially in Chicago, a place
that needs that, a place yeah, that positivity and that
thing where you know, people are thinking that I don't
have to fight in the streets. I can actually make
something of my life and change my life through MMA,
through mixed martial arts, through fighting. I do think that
it's an absolute positive thing and I would be elated
to bring the belt back to the Lake, back to
(12:15):
Chicago and represent the city once again.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
You know what was the best thing about you and
the law thought but you kind of you were classy
with it. The shit key, Yesaday, when you won, nobody
jumped on the cage.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Oh my god, that was crazy. I give you about
that all the time. He got so excited. Yeah too, exactly, Yeah,
he got he got taken on it.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I want to represent my hometown too, if Spokane Washington
and bring a belt back to the five on nine.
You know, I'm representing two cities. I am a transplant
to Chicago. I've been there for the last eight years,
but it feels like home to me.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
It's like I.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Don't foresee myself moving back to Spokane anytime soon, at
least not until my daughter's eighteen. But with that being said,
you can never forget where you came from. You can
never forget you know, your roots, and Spokane is my roots.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Washington State is my home.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
Chicago is my home now, but I'll be representing both
Spokane and Chicago.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Before I want to ask you for a prediction on
the fight this weekend, you and Roquel Pennington.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
I know what started back then. Is it just a
fight or is there anything more to this?
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Because it seems like you operate well when you can
create a little bit of friction. Be honest, it does
seem like you operate well when you could create a
bit of friction.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
You know, by the time you're the man that got
locked in there. She was like, I want to care
and then you just beat him. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
No, you know a lot of people say that, and
I'm like, come on, Like most of the time, I'm
just kidding around.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
I feel like I'm harmless, I'm joking. But at the
same time, it's like, no, seriously, I'm serious. I'm gonna
beat you, you know.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
And I don't I don't want to shy away from that.
You know, you have a belief in yourself. You have
a confidence in yourself. You know how much work and
time and effort, blood, sweat and tears that you put on.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
So it's almost offensive when.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
You, you know, see these people, for example, my opponent
at all these events every single week, and it's like,
what do you think You're just gonna steamroll me? You
think you don't have to train for me. I'm offended,
you know, And when I see these things, it just
fires me up to make me want to say, like,
you're gonna regret that, you know you're training for both
me and Kayla. You're gonna be sorry for that. You
shouldn't have done that. You should have taken me seriously,
(14:20):
you know you.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Think that's a mistake. Though kind of talking.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
She's she is speaking about Kayla Harrison, who is essentially
the elephant in the room now, right, Yeah, she's it
seems like she's planning for two fights, and also Kayla,
like it is planning for two fights. This division, though,
now gets a little bit more exciting, right because you're
back Kayla's here. It seems like there's a path to
where it could be exactly what it was a couple
(14:44):
of years ago.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
But again, you.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Seem like the only one that's kind of focusing on
the task, even though you say, well, Kayla really doesn't
belong yet.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:54):
Oh, I'm not saying that she doesn't belong. I'm just saying,
get in line and wait your turn, sweetie.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
There will be a time for you. But with that
being said, you know, is it a mistake? Here's the reality.
The reality of the situation is, Hey, they're right, you know.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
And I mean, like, I do get injured, and I
do pull out of fights because I do get injured,
What do you want me to do?
Speaker 1 (15:15):
They're telling Yeah, they're telling the truth, you know.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
So I'm not mad at that common I just think
it's funny because, like I said, I am making the fight.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
I am here. It's fight week.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Everything is is ready for me to just you know,
get wound up and send me away and get get
the job done. And you're absolutely right. I am focused
on the task at hand. Seems like she's got her
focus in other places.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
You know, how's the fight in this weekend.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
With me getting my hand raised. I don't care if
it comes by knockout. I don't care if I knock
you out with the pinky finger whatever. I'm when when
that casual closes, I'm going to die to get my
hand raised. And I have that edge where I'm going
to I know I'm not going to die, and I
don't mean it like I'm gonna die literally, but I
will give my life him to get my hand raised.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
It is that important to me.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
You must hit really hard because I never saw Amanda
react the way that she reacted when you would actually
get your hands on it.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
So you must hit hard.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
You know. It's so funny when I was on the
when I was on The Ultimate.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
Fighter, might be bigger than mine, They're not.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
When I was on The Ultimate Fighter, they were saying
like this, Juliana's not that good.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
When she hits Miths. She hits like this. Yeah, she
put her head down and she's just like swinging wildly,
you know.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
And a lot of people very unassuming that I don't
hit hard.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
I don't think that they think that I hit hard.
You know. If they see me training, they're like, she sucks.
You know. Everybody's always giving me that, you.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Know, that pass, and it's worked to my advantage because
I do hit hard and it might not look like it.
You might not think that, but you're gonna feel it
when we get locked in there. You're gonna feel it.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Everybody has an opinion until you're stuck in the octagon
with the Venezuela and Vixen who challenges for the UFC
bandaweight Championship this weekend. You have see three or seven
goals down from Salt Lake City, you thaw. Make sure
you hit the purchase butt, buy that pay per view
and go tap into everything that Juliana Payne is doing. Juliana,
thank you again for checking in with me.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
I appreciate it. Until next time, guys, Peace,
