first episode of Austin Rizzo and Filtered. I'm Anthony Rizzo
alongside my patna, David Ross, two time World Series Champion,
one with the Red Sox, one with the Cubbies in
twenty sixteen. We just did our Lovably Reunion podcast where
we told all the stories of our ten year reunion,

and now we are getting into Rossi and I talking
the current game of baseball. We played together for two years.
Rossi was my manager for a year and a half
until he traded me, so he has the perspective of
managerial experience. I have the wanna be a manager slash
GM experience from the player side, So we're gonna be.

We're gonna be able to dissect a lot of topics
from what the managerial hat on and the players had
and hopefully take you viewers inside the clubhouse and what

was amazing, but I'm so excited to be talking to
current state of the game.

Throughout my career and even post playing, we always talked
the game of baseball. We've Rossi has such an amazing
light of the game. I think being a catcher and
all the experience he went through being an everyday catcher's
times in a backup catcher, he was able to see
the game in a different lens and he shared that
knowledge with me and taught me so many things. So

all these topics that we're gonna get brought up throughout
you know, this playoff stretch. We're in the dog days
of summer right now. We will get into that later
in the show, but we will be able to break
down and hopefully give you fans and viewers perspective that
maybe you didn't know Rossie. I was on Twitter or

of you hitting a walk off home run. We should

Who else we got in there, Royce, Clayton and Carnacion.

We got all kind of guys. Is that that Great

Yeah, well I think they had. I think they had
like dollar hot dog night that night because we were
chasing the.

Cards, so it sold out in like two seconds because
they were giving away cheap hot dogs.

But that was an amazing Now.

I think we were like three or four back from
the Cardinals in the in the division race, and we
had a really good team. And that was my first
walk off i'd ever hit. And I hit it, and
Jimmy Edmons was going back and I'm like, you've seen
his highlights so many times of him robin home runs
are climbing the wall, but it just disappeared and never
came down. I crushed it, and it's one of those
I didn't feel really how good I hit it, And

that was a good feeling.

That was a nice one.

And that was two thousand and six. I believe you
hit twenty pumps that year, twenty plus right, twenty.

Yeah, that year I believe is the reason that started
your two year deal span because everyone know he can
get back to.

And my I remember my agent Ryan said, said I
had nineteen going into the last road trip. We were
going Florida, and I think we finished in New York
playing the Mets that year and I went to I
kept kept going nineteen's, not twenty nineteens, not twenty.

My first atration year it's not right. It's not twenty.

So I hit in two ninety nine is not three hundred.

I hit two off Dontrell Willis in in two upper
deckers in and o'marlin Stadium. Some of the first balls
off hit to get me twenty and twenty one. So
I was pumped when when I got twenty.

All right, So let's get into a few of the
major headlines in Major League Baseball right now. For me,
the biggest one is the two best teams in baseball
are some of the lowest payroll teams. I know, the
upcoming CBA agreement is a hot topic in sports, all
of sports, not only just baseball, but the ninety million
(07:50):
dollar payroll. Tampa Bay Rays are by far the best
team in the American League right now, and the one
hundred and forty three million dollar Milwaukee Brewers are running
away with the National League. So it's crazy to see,
you know, the Dodgers have a four hundred plus million
dollar payroll. I feel like all of baseball, the sports
(08:11):
world wants the Brewers are raised to save baseball right
with their low payrolls. But it's been impressive what they've
been doing. And it's going to be a fun stretch
to see these teams continue to fight and to continue
to see if they're going to stay the best at
the end of one sixty two.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Yeah, And it always feels like the Dodgers are slow
playing their players right, like they're able to bring class now,
and you know, some of these guys back snell back
on a slower kind of trajectory when they get injured
and kind of play for that September October time of year.
They are scuffling right now and hit it a little
(08:48):
bit of a law here in August.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
But I think my.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Perspective, you think they're in trouble, I do.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Wouldn't say in trouble. No. I think they got a
seven out.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
They got swept by Arizona, and Arizona's still seven and
a half back, like they've got plenty of plenty of
tie Tani. I think Otani's still going to pitch. You know,
I saw some clips of him throwing yesterday. You know
that knee I think has really affected him in a
lot of ways. But going back to their rays and
the Brewers, it really stands out. I think when you
(09:20):
have your process of how you develop and how you
draft and player development in the minor leagues, and those
guys come up and contributing or or analyzing and finding
the guys that really play your brand of baseball or
we're gonna emphasize, you know, kind of their strengths and
kind of everybody tries to fix guy's weaknesses. And I
feel like Tampa Bay was from the pitching. They just
(09:40):
kind of maximize the strengths of some players and and
kind of let them go out and get better.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Has really worked out for them, and.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
The Brewers obviously like they just feels like they haven't
hit everybody hits a law at some point in the season.
Doesn't feel like the Brewers have hit one at all.
They've been so consistent and their player development, their young pitching,
the guy is that all around the infield. I don't
have a lot of time, but yeah, they continue to
put up a lot of w's.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
They just keep doing it. The Brewers just keep doing
it year in and year out.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
The race too many they have a down year here,
it's oh, They're going to be automatically good next year.
It really frustrates for me. I feel like playing on
a big market. You see some big market teams starting
to operate saying, hey, why can't we be the Rais
or the Brewers and developed that way? And it just
doesn't work that way in big markets. The big markets
(10:29):
come with the bigger, the light shine brighter. It's it's
not as easy to play there. You do not have
as much time to develop in the big league. So
but I do I do. What I love most about
our game right now is it is so competitively balanced.
Their teams are. This is the best it's been since
I've since my time in baseball.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Well, knowing your identity, I think as an organization is
priority number one. How many times have we been you know,
we were together or even you know, and for you know,
you were still playing and I was done. But like Houston,
everybody's like, oh, this is how Houston does it, Let's
do it this way. This is how Tampa Bay does it.

Every every couple of years, you have this fad of
a new pitch right right now, it's the kick change up,
or it was when it came out. You know, it's like,
it's just such a fad league, And I mean, really,
you you have to keep up with the Joneses. Honestly,
you're gonna get left in the dust. But another major
headline is schoogl Trek scuober getting trades of the Dodgers,
(11:35):
making his Dodger Stadium debut, the loss of the Cubbies
and their first one. The Cubbies are one of the
hottest teams in baseball right now, but Schooble making his
Dodger Stadium debut gives up three. Probably not to his standards,
because it's a home run to Jack Caglione, which he's having.
He's having a monster year, a cagey. I love his game,
but I think that the Dodgers right now. They are
(11:59):
so good that they're losing what they lose eight out
of ten, and and if I feel like inside that clubhouse,
they're just like, yeah, that's cute. Everyone thinks we're we're
falling off, and they, like you said, they're just getting
guys healthy. They're not playing, they're not pitching Otani because
they just want to get him healthy for the postseason.
(12:20):
So it's the Dodgers, man, they are just they're gonna
be hard to beat.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
They are gonna be hard to be in October.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
And they're so deep, right like Will Smith's out, Dalton
Rushing is out, you know, he you know, the meniscus thing,
you know, two of their main catchers out and working
some guys back.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
But I think they're gonna be fine.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
They're they're so deep, you know, they're just offensively scuffling
a little bit right now, and school was gonna be fine.
I watched a little bit of his start last night.
Look like he's just a little bit. He's probably amped up.
First time in Dodger Stadium, jumpy. The fastball is a
little ratic for him. But he'll settle in and and
they're gonna be they're gonna be right when they're supposed
to become into September October, and then it's about who's hot,
(13:04):
as we know, like who's rolling into the postseason with
a little bit of momentum and pitchers, you know, hit
the offense kind of clicking on all cylinders, and a
pitching staff doing their job.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
The beautiful part for school is he's coming in there
and it's not like he's coming in there to be
their savior. He's now just another superstar amongst their entire
superstar rosters. So he has even if he gets off
if you're a Dodgers fan and Scoobol does get off
to a rough start his first few addings, as he's
getting comfortable with his new staff, his new teammates, a
(13:37):
new league. You have all the time in the world
with him. Obviously they want to get that first round
by and get that locked up. But if not, they
have the pitching, they have the depth. I mean, it's
it's August eleventh, it's the dog days of summer on
a team that has won back to back World Series titles.
They are going through the motions. I would say, if
(14:00):
you ask them, I would imagine inside of the clubhouts.
They're they're not they're they're grinding every day, they're working
as hard as they can.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
But once once in a few weeks, once they could
see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
I think this Dodgers team will be clicking on also,
and there's like we've seen the last few year.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Yeah, and then last comment for me on the Dodgers
is it when you're going bad, every team goes through
a stretch where it's just not going well. Like in
that Arizona series, Otani, Freeman and Bets were three for
thirty three and they got swept by the Dodgers, right
Edwin Diaz blew two saves, Like some of these things
(14:35):
aren't gonna happen. Those guys are gonna, they're gonna. You're
gonna go through ups and downs. But when it's going bad,
it's going bad as every team and you can't explain it.
Like look at the Coves who are so hot now
and they lost you know, two ten game losing streaks
out of the season. So everybody kind of goes through
the ups and downs, which is so impressive about you know,
the Milwaukee Brewers, as we were talking just how consistent.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
They've been well, I think too. When everyone plays the Dodgers,
you go Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers come to you,
that's your that circle on the calendar. All the pitchers
are throwing their hardest stuff. Everyone's hyped up, the adrenalins
higher for the opposing team. And when you're on the
big market team like the Dodgers, when I was on
the Yankees of the Cubs, it was you knew you
were getting their best stuff every day. So when you
(15:19):
go through the skin it it gets magnified a little more,
but it's it's all.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Part of the grind, no doubt, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
How about let's talk about it.

We got Yeah, let's talk about the Cubbies a little bit.
And there you go, bro talking about Otani. Wow, I mean,
what a what A done?

I feel like, and obviously I may be a little
biased in Chicago here, but I feel like what PCA
is doing, man, is just the growth he's made this
year has been insane. He's it Honestly, it's really not
about me, and I don't want to talk about me,
but here we go. What he's doing the adjustments he's

made against lefties this season has been tenfold. He's walking more.
I believe it's helping him face right hand and pitching
as well. I mean, he's made real adjustments. His walk
rate is through the roof compared to what it was.
What was he walking at a three percent clip when
you had him as your as your player, as your
young rookie ross he so.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Yeah, yeah, he just got a he didn't get He
only got like fourteen at bats for me, so he
was he would we were, we were all grinded at anytime.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Yeah, he's a anytime you could have a anytime you're
on base, can be around eighty to one hundred points
higher than your average. For me, that's where you start
separating the good players to the elite players. And I
mean he's what twoity six, three eight and a five
forty four slug while playing the best center field in

the game.

I mean, it's gonna.

Be maybe the defender in the game, right, Yeah, Yeah,
for sure, I think I think the really you know, obviously,
Pete's got to continue to carry that through the season,
and I don't see any signs of him not being
able to do that.

The trick is.

I think Otani separates himself when it comes to pitching.
He comes back and pitches and is dominant like he
was before the knee started popping up and he stopped
pitching before the All Star break.

I think that's going to be the real separator.

But PCA has had a phenomenal year up to this point,
and what's impressive to me is the adjustments he's made,
Like you're talking about controlling the strike song, but getting
off to a rough start being around those guys in
the WBC, I think God a real impact on him,
and no doubt how those guys were the superstars right
and then going in struggling a little bit and making

some adjustments and then just like putting the guys on
their back. We talk all the time about what successful
teams have, and obviously the Cubs have been really successful.
They had their horses or horses, and PCA has stepped
up and turned himself into an MVP candidate along with
all the great players they have around him. But he
(18:04):
is that horse. I mean, we had Chris Bryant in
twenty sixteen that won the MVP and was a guy
that showed up every single day, and his performance and
his versatility and his base running skills.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
I don't think got enough love.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
But he was a guy that you two at the
top of our order, really performed day in and day out,
and that just eats the consistency and the winning and
builds the confidence of the group.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
No doubt.

I mean, for me, right now, he is the MVP
of the National League. I think that what he's done
this year. Otani has been banged up, He's not hitting
as good as he is, but I know, I know,
the pitch hitting is just what Otani has been doing
is unheard of. But again, in this game, I feel
like we just kind of get bored of the superstars,
the boring players, and for sure.

You know Pa now.

I mean, for me, what I'm impressed most by is
his adjustment off lefties and being around the team a
little bit more talking to him, a little bit more,
talking to John Mayley, their hitting coach, their assistant hitting
coach in Chicago, just the adjustments and talking to Pete
about hey approach and why he always asked me why

I sit so close to the plate, and how to
to take pitches and the reason you take pitches.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
So he I was so impressed.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Of him, all the questions that he asked me and
all the right questions, and then seeing him in game
and being up close seeing him take his approach into
the game, and over the last few months watching him
continue to just grow confidence in his approach. You literally
see him blossoming. You literally, I see the development right
(19:42):
in front of my eyes. It's crazy to see.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
He's the most exciting player in the game. For me,
it's like must watch TV when he's on field.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
So yeah, I mean with you, he's yeah, he he
and he loves the smoke.

He loves he wants all of it.

The Cubs right now are one of the hottest teams
in Baby, I mean Cubs in the National League, Red
Sox in the American League. If if you're Cubs fan,

calling the game on Saturday on ESPN this weekend, and

baseball fan, Cubs fan, this is the mecca of the schedule.
In my opinion, It's a dog days of summer. It's
August falls kind of right around the corner. I know
we don't talk about that in Chicago, but enjoy this
upcoming week. I know for me, I can't wait to
watch that series against the Cardinals and even more excited

for next week's series against the White Sox.

I like Philadelphia Phillies. Yes, Kyle Schureberg, Philadelphia Phillies, Right,
Bryce Harper, another stud Bryce Harper at the deadline basically
said to Dave Dombrowski and the organization, Hey, we need help.
We think we deserve help, which is controversial in the clubhouse, right, Rossie,

I mean you managed. Don Mattingly's response was a head
scratcher for me being a player. But they go out
and get help, they all get Luis their eyes, and
he's really gonna I feel like turn that that lineup
and just make it a lot deeper with a lot
more room for error.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Throughout that lineup now, but you got to build on
your strengths, right, Like. I think the tricky part is
there's a lot of moving parts. I think there's like
four guys switching position. Credit to Bryce Harper, your highest
paid player, your face of the franchise, him and Schwarber
being able to win, willing to move positions to accommodate,
you know, some of the moving parts, and then what
they're picking up. So I think that's a pro move.
(22:36):
I'm with you on the Mattingly stuff like that whole
thing is just kind of handled a little bit weird.
I think you're when you're in the playoff hunt as
a player, you're expecting help, you know, I don't think
it's any offense to two guys that are there, or
you're just thinking like, hey, we can't improve in some areas,
and that's the front office's job, and they actually should
(22:57):
take a lot of pride in that because they don't.
They don't have any impact really in season up to
that point, like major impact. So but yeah, I think
from a managerial standpoint, Don Scott has got his hands full.

He's moving. I think Ball moved.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
From third to first, to Rise goes to second, Stott
goes to third, and Harper to write. So I mean
we've got all kind of moving parts, and you got
guys going to probably put in some extra work defensively
in August, which is always a little bit tricky. But
their identity has been offense this this entire year, pitching
an offense, so defense was never a strong suit for
(23:32):
them this year. And I think they've got the pieces,
seem to be off to a good start since a
trade deadline.

Yeah, I mean, all right, Rossie, let's take you back.
I want you to put your player hat on. It's two,
all right, fifteen, No, it's twenty sixteen. We have expectations
to win the World Series at the trade deadline. I
go out in the media and say, we need help.
What are you saying to me as my veteran on
that team.

I just think there's like better ways to phrase that,
Like it'd be great if they added somewhere, but we
leave that up to the front office, you know, like
that's their job now. Now they're in their season and
and you know, I think front offices have a lot
on their plate when it comes to how many guys

usually the favorites in the Al East and the Red
Sox this year, with the way this season has gone,
they go on this massive street. They sweep the Yankees,
They get embarrassed to the Rockies a few weeks ago.
They come into the Yankees series at home and they
end up souping the Yankees a four game set, a
couple of national television games, and that springboard of them

to a fifteen game win streak, and then they lose,
and then they go on to win more, and now
post All Star Break they're winning. They've won. I think
they had the best record post All Star break, right,
So this team is real and they had the emotional streak.
And usually after emotional streaks. You saw with the Cubs
over this year when they streaked and won ten games

in a row, then they lost ten games in a
row and they won ten. It's like when you're on
teams that are really good for me, ROSSI and you manage.
So maybe you're different. But looking back now from all
the years I played, I'd rather go ten and two
over the course of twenty thirty forty games or ten

and three then win ten twelve in a row. Because
you win that many games in a row, it starts
getting too emotional and you're playing at such an high
emotional level that you can't sustain that emotional level for
the rest of the season. So I feel like it's
almost good to lose a game here and there and
then just keep going and keep trekking.

Yeah, it's all about the momentum and and and they've
been getting The Red Sox had great starting pitching, but
they definitely came together. Uh you know, I think a
little bit with the They've got five Venezuelan players on
the team, and all that stuff was going on in

developing pitching right now, the stuff's getting better. They're getting
in the zone. I know it's a little erratic, but

they're setting up with this elite stuff. It's not the
way I was came up with guys on the edges
and sinker slider type stuff.

But it's real power stuff.

And you know, from the three guys we talked about,
it's pretty impressive that what the run they're on at
their age right now.

watch these teams and Brewers had guys rolling out there

the development is better than ever. The information that these

give credit to all these pitchers for diving deeper into
their development, diving deeper into their mechanics, going to the

organizations as well catching up and hiring these guys internally,

release the ball like this, If you move the seams
a little bit, your ball should probably start doing this
more right, and.

Yeah, it's the science behind it was is absolutely insane,
and I do believe that's maybe why you're seeing a
little bit more injuries right now, because guys are continuing
to try to throw new pitches. And when you try

and you're just experimenting throwing new pitches, it takes time

for your muscles to adapt to that. So you can
get away with being young and dehydrated or or whatnot,
or or not having caught up on your sleep. But
eventually you keep messing with throwing in a different way
and messing these muscles up.

In one day, your your arm just pops. You know that.

I think that could be an issue there. But Bro,
the development and the modern day picture is fun to watch,
and I think as we evolve more, you're going to

all their guys pretty much lined up to be healthy

going into the playoffs, which they're gonna Boonie's gonna have

I mean, you look at the American League Central. You
have a good week and you're the favorite to win

the American League Central. Right now, it's the Tigers are
hot again. There are a few games back. The White
Sox are in first place. I love the tweet that

the front runner for m v P right in the

Rossi was my manager for a year and a half
until he traded me, so he has the perspective of
managerial experience. I have the wanna be a manager slash
GM experience from the player side, So we're gonna be.

light of the game. I think being a catcher and
all the experience he went through being an everyday catcher's
times in a backup catcher, he was able to see
the game in a different lens and he shared that
knowledge with me and taught me so many things. So

you know, this playoff stretch. We're in the dog days
of summer right now. We will get into that later

down and hopefully give you fans and viewers perspective that

like dollar hot dog night that night because we were

they were giving away cheap hot dogs.

But that was an amazing Now.

I think we were like three or four back from
the Cardinals in the in the division race, and we
had a really good team. And that was my first
walk off i'd ever hit. And I hit it, and
Jimmy Edmons was going back and I'm like, you've seen
his highlights so many times of him robin home runs
are climbing the wall, but it just disappeared and never
came down. I crushed it, and it's one of those
I didn't feel really how good I hit it, And

that was a good feeling.

That was a nice one.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
And that was two thousand and six. I believe you
hit twenty pumps that year, twenty plus right, twenty.

One, twenty one. Nice year.

Yeah, that year I believe is the reason that started
your two year deal span because everyone know he can
get back to.

That twenty over form right for sure, for sure.

And my I remember my agent Ryan said, said I
had nineteen going into the last road trip. We were
going Florida, and I think we finished in New York
playing the Mets that year and I went to I
kept kept going nineteen's, not twenty nineteens, not twenty.

My first atration year it's not right. It's not twenty.

So I hit in two ninety nine is not three hundred.

I hit two off Dontrell Willis in in two upper
deckers in and o'marlin Stadium. Some of the first balls
off hit to get me twenty and twenty one. So
I was pumped when when I got twenty.

That was nice.

All right, So let's get into a few of the
major headlines in Major League Baseball right now. For me,
the biggest one is the two best teams in baseball
are some of the lowest payroll teams. I know, the
upcoming CBA agreement is a hot topic in sports, all
of sports, not only just baseball, but the ninety million
(07:50):
dollar payroll. Tampa Bay Rays are by far the best
team in the American League right now, and the one
hundred and forty three million dollar Milwaukee Brewers are running
away with the National League. So it's crazy to see,
you know, the Dodgers have a four hundred plus million
dollar payroll. I feel like all of baseball, the sports
(08:11):
world wants the Brewers are raised to save baseball right
with their low payrolls. But it's been impressive what they've
been doing. And it's going to be a fun stretch
to see these teams continue to fight and to continue
to see if they're going to stay the best at
the end of one sixty two.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Yeah, And it always feels like the Dodgers are slow
playing their players right, like they're able to bring class now,
and you know, some of these guys back snell back
on a slower kind of trajectory when they get injured
and kind of play for that September October time of year.
They are scuffling right now and hit it a little
(08:48):
bit of a law here in August.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
But I think my.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Perspective, you think they're in trouble, I do.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Wouldn't say in trouble. No. I think they got a
seven out.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
They got swept by Arizona, and Arizona's still seven and
a half back, like they've got plenty of plenty of
tie Tani. I think Otani's still going to pitch. You know,
I saw some clips of him throwing yesterday. You know
that knee I think has really affected him in a
lot of ways. But going back to their rays and
the Brewers, it really stands out. I think when you
(09:20):
have your process of how you develop and how you
draft and player development in the minor leagues, and those
guys come up and contributing or or analyzing and finding
the guys that really play your brand of baseball or
we're gonna emphasize, you know, kind of their strengths and
kind of everybody tries to fix guy's weaknesses. And I
feel like Tampa Bay was from the pitching. They just
(09:40):
kind of maximize the strengths of some players and and
kind of let them go out and get better.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Has really worked out for them, and.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
The Brewers obviously like they just feels like they haven't
hit everybody hits a law at some point in the season.
Doesn't feel like the Brewers have hit one at all.
They've been so consistent and their player development, their young pitching,
the guy is that all around the infield. I don't
have a lot of time, but yeah, they continue to
put up a lot of w's.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
They just keep doing it. The Brewers just keep doing
it year in and year out.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
The race too many they have a down year here,
it's oh, They're going to be automatically good next year.
It really frustrates for me. I feel like playing on
a big market. You see some big market teams starting
to operate saying, hey, why can't we be the Rais
or the Brewers and developed that way? And it just
doesn't work that way in big markets. The big markets
(10:29):
come with the bigger, the light shine brighter. It's it's
not as easy to play there. You do not have
as much time to develop in the big league. So
but I do I do. What I love most about
our game right now is it is so competitively balanced.
Their teams are. This is the best it's been since
I've since my time in baseball.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Well, knowing your identity, I think as an organization is
priority number one. How many times have we been you know,
we were together or even you know, and for you know,
you were still playing and I was done. But like Houston,
everybody's like, oh, this is how Houston does it, Let's
do it this way. This is how Tampa Bay does it.

Every every couple of years, you have this fad of
a new pitch right right now, it's the kick change up,
or it was when it came out. You know, it's like,
it's just such a fad league, And I mean, really,
you you have to keep up with the Joneses. Honestly,
you're gonna get left in the dust. But another major
headline is schoogl Trek scuober getting trades of the Dodgers,
(11:35):
making his Dodger Stadium debut, the loss of the Cubbies
and their first one. The Cubbies are one of the
hottest teams in baseball right now, but Schooble making his
Dodger Stadium debut gives up three. Probably not to his standards,
because it's a home run to Jack Caglione, which he's having.
He's having a monster year, a cagey. I love his game,
but I think that the Dodgers right now. They are
(11:59):
so good that they're losing what they lose eight out
of ten, and and if I feel like inside that clubhouse,
they're just like, yeah, that's cute. Everyone thinks we're we're
falling off, and they, like you said, they're just getting
guys healthy. They're not playing, they're not pitching Otani because
they just want to get him healthy for the postseason.
(12:20):
So it's the Dodgers, man, they are just they're gonna
be hard to beat.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
They are gonna be hard to be in October.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
And they're so deep, right like Will Smith's out, Dalton
Rushing is out, you know, he you know, the meniscus thing,
you know, two of their main catchers out and working
some guys back.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
But I think they're gonna be fine.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
They're they're so deep, you know, they're just offensively scuffling
a little bit right now, and school was gonna be fine.
I watched a little bit of his start last night.
Look like he's just a little bit. He's probably amped up.
First time in Dodger Stadium, jumpy. The fastball is a
little ratic for him. But he'll settle in and and
they're gonna be they're gonna be right when they're supposed
to become into September October, and then it's about who's hot,
(13:04):
as we know, like who's rolling into the postseason with
a little bit of momentum and pitchers, you know, hit
the offense kind of clicking on all cylinders, and a
pitching staff doing their job.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
The beautiful part for school is he's coming in there
and it's not like he's coming in there to be
their savior. He's now just another superstar amongst their entire
superstar rosters. So he has even if he gets off
if you're a Dodgers fan and Scoobol does get off
to a rough start his first few addings, as he's
getting comfortable with his new staff, his new teammates, a
(13:37):
new league. You have all the time in the world
with him. Obviously they want to get that first round
by and get that locked up. But if not, they
have the pitching, they have the depth. I mean, it's
it's August eleventh, it's the dog days of summer on
a team that has won back to back World Series titles.
They are going through the motions. I would say, if

you ask them, I would imagine inside of the clubhouts.
They're they're not they're they're grinding every day, they're working
as hard as they can.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
But once once in a few weeks, once they could
see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
I think this Dodgers team will be clicking on also,
and there's like we've seen the last few year.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Yeah, and then last comment for me on the Dodgers
is it when you're going bad, every team goes through
a stretch where it's just not going well. Like in
that Arizona series, Otani, Freeman and Bets were three for
thirty three and they got swept by the Dodgers, right
Edwin Diaz blew two saves, Like some of these things
(14:35):
aren't gonna happen. Those guys are gonna, they're gonna. You're
gonna go through ups and downs. But when it's going bad,
it's going bad as every team and you can't explain it.
Like look at the Coves who are so hot now
and they lost you know, two ten game losing streaks
out of the season. So everybody kind of goes through
the ups and downs, which is so impressive about you know,
the Milwaukee Brewers, as we were talking just how consistent.

They've been well, I think too. When everyone plays the Dodgers,
you go Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers come to you,
that's your that circle on the calendar. All the pitchers

separating the good players to the elite players. And I

and what's impressive to me is the adjustments he's made,

some adjustments and then just like putting the guys on
their back. We talk all the time about what successful
teams have, and obviously the Cubs have been really successful.
They had their horses or horses, and PCA has stepped
up and turned himself into an MVP candidate along with
all the great players they have around him. But he

is that horse. I mean, we had Chris Bryant in
twenty sixteen that won the MVP and was a guy
that showed up every single day, and his performance and
his versatility and his base running skills.

top of our order, really performed day in and day out,
and that just eats the consistency and the winning and

they're picking up. So I think that's a pro move.

They don't have any impact really in season up to

goes to third, and Harper to write. So I mean

an offense, so defense was never a strong suit for

them this year. And I think they've got the pieces,
seem to be off to a good start since a

organization is thinking about winning the World Series every single year.

Yankees are the Yankees, and they're always going to be

usually the favorites in the Al East and the Red
Sox this year, with the way this season has gone,
they go on this massive street. They sweep the Yankees,
They get embarrassed to the Rockies a few weeks ago.
They come into the Yankees series at home and they
end up souping the Yankees a four game set, a
couple of national television games, and that springboard of them

to a fifteen game win streak, and then they lose,
and then they go on to win more, and now
post All Star Break they're winning. They've won. I think
they had the best record post All Star break, right,
So this team is real and they had the emotional streak.
And usually after emotional streaks. You saw with the Cubs
over this year when they streaked and won ten games

in a row, then they lost ten games in a
row and they won ten. It's like when you're on
teams that are really good for me, ROSSI and you manage.
So maybe you're different. But looking back now from all
the years I played, I'd rather go ten and two
over the course of twenty thirty forty games or ten

and three then win ten twelve in a row. Because
you win that many games in a row, it starts
getting too emotional and you're playing at such an high
emotional level that you can't sustain that emotional level for
the rest of the season. So I feel like it's
almost good to lose a game here and there and
then just keep going and keep trekking.

Yeah, it's all about the momentum and and and they've
been getting The Red Sox had great starting pitching, but
they definitely came together. Uh you know, I think a
little bit with the They've got five Venezuelan players on
the team, and all that stuff was going on in

in the government over there. So those guys, Wilson and
Will you're you know, they've got a number of guys

that you could feel that it was way heavy on

feels like they've kind of come together in a great way.

many great pitchers and some veteran guys like Schooble that
have been around, but Peyton Totley, Jacob Azarowski and Cam Schlittler,
all three of these pitchers are in their rookie or second.

Like, there's a lot that we talk about and the
league talks about about how pitching development is is going
the wrong way, and I don't know how anybody can
say that with Obviously there's some injuries that I think
that we've got to figure out, but the way they're
developing pitching right now, the stuff's getting better. They're getting
in the zone. I know it's a little erratic, but

they're setting up with this elite stuff. It's not the
way I was came up with guys on the edges
and sinker slider type stuff.

But it's real power stuff.

And you know, from the three guys we talked about,
it's pretty impressive that what the run they're on at
their age right now.

Bro, it's insane. These these dudes. Everyone always asks me,
right now, oh do you miss it? Or is the
game easier? I'm like, no, I go I watched I
watch these teams and Brewers had guys rolling out there
all Their average fastball is one hundred miles an hour
in a game this year. What the game? The picture,
the development is better than ever. The information that these

guys are getting is better than ever. And I think
it's only going to get harder to hit in this league.
I mean, these pictures once they can, which they're never
going to figure out how to solve the chess piece
of thrown to hitters because we always say pictures, you know,
we give them, We don't ever give them that much credit.
But bro, the development of these guys, you got to

give credit to all these pitchers for diving deeper into
their development, diving deeper into their mechanics, going to the
drive lines or all these other places. And then the
organizations as well catching up and hiring these guys internally,
hiring these guys to literally go in slow motion and

see how you release the ball and saying, hey, you
release the ball like this, If you move the seams
a little bit, your ball should probably start doing this
more right, and.

Its seams shifting.

Yeah, it's the science behind it was is absolutely insane,
and I do believe that's maybe why you're seeing a
little bit more injuries right now, because guys are continuing
to try to throw new pitches. And when you try
to throw a new pitch, if you're a young player
and you're just experimenting throwing new pitches, it takes time
(46:27):
for your muscles to adapt to that. So you can
get away with being young and dehydrated or or whatnot,
or or not having caught up on your sleep. But
eventually you keep messing with throwing in a different way
and messing these muscles up.

In one day, your your arm just pops. You know that.

I think that could be an issue there. But Bro,
the development and the modern day picture is fun to watch,
and I think as we evolve more, you're going to
see these guys getting deeper in the game. Understand, maybe
Biz doesn't have to throw it one O five, you
can he could tame it back to ninety eight and
go eight or nine, seven, seven to eight innings instead
