Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Sharper Square, presented by hard Rock that we
are part of the Volume podcast Network.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
This is the show.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
It makes the square sharper and makes the wise guys
pay attention. I am Chad Norman, I am joined as
always buy my co host might be Ff, my companion,
my com padre professional better Simon Hunter.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello, Simon.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Jaed. How are we doing, dude?
Speaker 1 (00:28):
We got so much to catch up on, even from
the past forty eight hours in the NFL. We're going
to get into it very quickly. We are going to
dive into the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the Spurs.
Jason Timp, who was supposed to be on with us
today to preview from the beginning of the finals, is
dreadfully sick. If you've watched his show Hoops tonight, you
(00:48):
know he is fighting through it because he.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Just keep plays.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
But we can't make him come on the show and
have to do his show as well. So hopefully we'll
be seeing him on Thursday show when he is better.
The Stanley Cup Finals do begin tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina,
Carolina Hurricanes facing the Vegas Golden Knights VGK in a
battle for Lord Stanley's Cup. I was in Vegas last
week when they clinched.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
It was exciting.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
We'll be diving into best bets in the series with
the help of an old friend, our hockey expert from
the New York Post former Action Network College, Mike Leeboff.
But first, Simon, the two big NFL trades went down yesterday.
We were immediately discussing how the odds were moving on
Super Bowls. One was the Foregonden collusion that has been
discussed by everybody, the best tea in Philadelphia being dished.
(01:39):
AJ Brown finally getting traded to the Patriots. The other
one Miles Garrett to the Rams. Before we get into
Miles Garrett, let's talk about AJ Brown. The Patriots get
a twenty twenty seven. First they get a twenty twenty
eight to fifth. They were planning for this, how was
(02:00):
doing his thing? Aj is off to New England as
a better as a fan. Let's approach this from both angles.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah? Really interested? Is it better?
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Patriots?
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Now?
Speaker 5 (02:12):
I think sixteen to one Super Bowl odds Eagles dropped
down to nineteen to one, So not a ton of movement,
but still enough. Right, That's how important AJ is and
I think that's, you know, a huge move to England,
even if even if AJ has a bad knee with
whatever they're trying to pitch the reason he, you know,
(02:32):
is damaged goods. I just don't buy it. I just
see a guy that's just the highest level of talent
and it's gonna be the best weapon Drake mad has
ever had. So from Patriots side's gotta be really happy.
From the Eagles side, you know, never great when your
team's getting a little worse. But from their from their standpoint,
I think they traded their first round pick in a
third round pick for him, and they got four years
(02:55):
out of them, two super Bowl appearances.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
You know, obviously won a Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
I think you had the most receiving yards and Eagles
history in that four year span, like just set all
these different type of records, and you know, nothing but
nothing but love on.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
The Eagle side, send an Aj out.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
But I think from their perspective this upcoming season, it's
not ideal.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Right, you're losing such an incredible talent.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
But you know, I look like how he played for
this right drafting Lemon, kind of shifting the offense to
be less reliant on the extra receiver and trying to
put the ball more inside the field rather than playing
the ball totally outside and just playing one on one matchup.
So yeah, I love the move for both teams.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Honestly. I think New England it's it's.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Great for them for right now and for the Eagles
it's it's great for right now because it just seemed
like it ran its course, right. I think he didn't
interview that got released this morning. AJ just stucked it.
It's like him and hurts at the end of the day.
That's it seems like that's what it was at the
end of the day, right. Whatever happened with the relationship
just wasn't the same as the last two three years.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
And you know, AJ grew up a Patriot span.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
So yeah, it sounds like I work out for both
parties and I served you from the get go. I
thought he's gonna handle like professional, right. He never went
to the media. He's a team captain. You know, his
whole antics of reading stuff on the sideline. That was
when things were good. People back like that was when
was bad. No, that was when we were winning. He
just was a guy that had to bite his tongue
a lot, right. He was someone that was clearly unhappy
in this offense, and I hope he finds out he's
(04:20):
looking for. Right, it's New England, Josh McDaniels. That should
be a high flying offense there for him. So yeah,
nothing but the best rage. I'm just happy he's out
of the NFC as well.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Look, it could end up being Howie as always manage
this brilliantly. Right, It was clear that the end was
here for this team. You mentioned some of the sort
of the stats that he had in those four years.
(04:49):
He ended up becoming a top fifteen all time receiver
in just four years for the Eagles that obviously have
a story franchise. The fact they went to two Super Bowls,
he won the title. In those four years. You got
as much out of this guy as you can get,
and not everything in the NFL was forever. We're seeing
that with the Miles Garrett trade too. I think the
(05:10):
Eagles played this perfectly. It feels like a little bit
more of a risk for the Patriots. You know, they're
getting a guy who could just be it could just
be one or two years, it could be what they
need to get them to maintain their positioning. And what
I think is going to be a much more competitive
for them. AFC. The Chiefs will be improved. I think
(05:31):
the Bills will still be a big challenge for them.
Their schedule is going to be harder. We saw what
would happen for Drake May when he was in the playoffs.
He wasn't perfect in the playoffs, even with the shoulder injury.
So I don't know that this.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Is the fix.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
It's interesting to me that the Eagles dropped in their
Super Bowl odds to nineteen to one and the Patriots
improved to sixteen to one. I would see a lot
more value in the Eagles all of a sudden, personally,
like they're revamping their entire offense so they don't have
to be building around aj Brown. I got a lot
of faith in that organization.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Yeah, and we're going to get in obviously into Sproud's
more with the Rams coming up. But it's this is
just public reception in my opinion, right, That's why it's like, yeah,
I totally agree what you're saying. It's it shouldn't it
shouldn't have moved the way it did. But my view
is like, if you're you know, a believer of this
Patriots team, this is the best move. I don't know,
(06:27):
even if it is just two years, he's twenty nine.
You're seeing Devontay Adams play well pretty well into his
thirty three thirty four years old. Now I know they're
different type of players, but I do think aj the
way he takes care of his body, that could be
a great trade for them. And it's also Drake May
if he is what all these people perceive him to be.
Like you see these people put in another quarterback lists.
(06:49):
Now they already got Drake mean as a top ten quarterback.
If these things are true, this is the next step
you go get that number one, true number one quarterback,
which you know Jalen hurts. You just look at the stats.
How much he got better improved adding AJ Brown to
his team, and the same should be for Drake May.
It's like, Okay, me and you both agree. We think
(07:11):
he'll take a step back because the schedule will be harder,
but this could be the equalizer. Like this is just
such an absolute game changer, having that one on one
receiver at all times on the outside. And yeah, it's
you know the super bow odds, the way people bet.
It's all about the shiny new toy jet you know that.
So yeah, I am total agree to. I think a
(07:31):
ton of values shifted this Eagles team. They're kind of
being not a little bit left for dead, but the
fact of their odds dropped was just interesting to me.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, that's shocking to me.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Shows a complete lack of faith and understanding in how
the Eagles build that the roster, the talent on the roster.
What I would expect to be a much better year
after the Eagles had such a down year, like we've
seen it with them multiple times. They go to the
super Bowl, they have a down year because their staff
gets rated.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
The next year after the.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Two years after the super Bowl, they are a significantly
better team because how we is now at a chance
to rebuild into a second year.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
And I just want to say, a down year though,
this is how good this ego is. Actually. I know
it was after a.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Super Bowl and if they just would have played their
starters in the final week of the season, they would.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Have been the two seeds.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
That's what I mean.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
That's what I'm just saying.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
The general public, when you hear them talk, they're like, well,
they're coming off from this year from hell, and you know,
Hurts at a horrible year, and you know State went
out a horrible year, and it's like the expectations, we
just put it so high because you know, the talent
level is that high in this Eagles team.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
So I think we're both in agreement.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
It's like people just have this this bad taste in
them out this egos team where you're way value they
should probably be ten to one and you're getting in
nineteen to one.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
So yeah, this is a no brainer super Bowl value
bet to me. I think people are excited about the
Cowboys and they should be. And I'm excited about the Cowboys. Actually,
was really impressed with Brian Schottenheimer and how we manage
that team. The defense can only get better without ebra
Flus and with players coming back from injury.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
But Caleb Downs, my guy, you can get them nine
to one right now for rookie defensive Rookie the.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Year, And look, that's probably great.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yeah, he's gonna be great.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
I want to get to Miles Garrett, but you just
says something really interesting to me about and you and
I always have big debates about our top ten quarterback lists,
and you mentioned Drake May. People have him at his
you know, in their top ten list. Caleb Williams, by
the way, is going to be the cover of Madden.
It's already sent us into a deep, deep spiral here
(09:40):
because we know we've been cursed. We've been cursed with
a challenge schedule, We've been cursed with high expectations. We're
cursed because the Bears might move to fucking northern Indiana.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
And now we got the cover of Madden.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
When we get to the top ten quarterbacks, Simon just
previewed for me right now. Well, Caleb Williams are Drake
may be on your list.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
One of them will be one of them will be interesting. No,
it's you don't just say more. Let's tease it. We
got we got three months before we have to say it.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Like you're saying though.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
It's it's a really interesting year coming off last year
where Lamar had a down season, right, Mahomes had a
down season, and these year two guys both got to
the two seed and bo Nick's got a one seed. So,
I mean last year was really upside down with these
(10:39):
new quarterbacks coming and taking what's theirs? And yeah, I
can't wait to go through our list. It's always fun
exercise breaking down our list.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
I think it's going to be more changes than ever.
Potentially Ty Simpson could be top ten. Miles Garrett traded
from the Browns to the Rams. The Rams doing what
they do their Eagles esque and their ability to manage
their roster and turn it over and continue to be
(11:07):
a really good team. So Miles Garrett, two time Defensive
Player of the Year, highest paid defensive player, sack record
last year. The Browns get Jared Vers defensive Rookie of
the Year, twenty seven first rounder, twenty eight second rounder,
twenty nine third rounder.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Look, if you're the Rams, great.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
The Browns are one of those teams that I think
you and I were getting super excited about, just like
a fun little taste.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
We thought.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
They've done an incredible job rebuilding their roster so much talent.
They have developed a tight end at running back, along
the defensive front, with the defensive line, and the backfield
and linebacker. Quarter with their rookies in the past couple
of years. Really good drafts. Quarterback is obviously the big question.
I'm not buying Deshaun Watson hype when he's thrown against
(12:01):
rookies and sweatpants.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
But man, this this takes a little bit of.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
The enthusiasm out of the Browns for me, Jared versus
as good as he is, he's not Miles Garrett, and
Miles Garrett was a game changer for that team. He
made people game plan differently for that defense.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Yeah, oddly enough that they went from two hundred to
one to two hundred to one.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
There's did not move. So I agree with you.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
It's it's it's not ideal, but on the grand spectrum
of things, it's it's slam dunk. You just traded for
a kid with a ton of upside who you know
as an Eagles fan, I saw him Bull Rush Melatta,
who was like one of the biggest freak athletes I've
ever seen fall backwards and versus nowhere near the sides
(12:50):
of this man. That's the strength in the center of ravy.
This kid has so Browns organization, you know, the whole
aj thing. I know Pats got said about, but how
he was shopping him, like it wasn't just the Patriots,
because the Patriot thought they were the only ones of
the dance. Because the Rams kind of pulled out of
it in February and apparently they were like, hey, we'll
give you a second. We're not giving up a first.
(13:11):
And that's how he's fine that I'm gonna shop him
round again. The Browns were a real thing. Like the
Browns for a Jane or first for Miles how I
was trying to get it done. But the Browns, I
think they held firm in the sense that if we're
gonna get rid of our all time all great the end,
we needed the end of return and I love that
move for them, and you know, going forward, like we
(13:32):
keep talking about, this organization is doing the right moves right.
The only thing missing is that quarterback. And who knows
if it is Watson if he has a one hit
wonder year here here and he gets another contract somehow.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
But I think we're both a great We really don't
believe in Watson.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
We think that's uh that ship has sailed. So it's
gonna be a defensive team. I think, as much as
it hurts to lose Miles Garrett, I'm excited to see
what they're gonna be like now with having having a
guy like him step in verse.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
You know, I just.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
I still think, you know, the line didn't move. I
think it was seven and a half week when we
talked about it. I think it's still the same. So
most people did think he was gonna be traded, right
he hasn't been to OTA's Miles Garrett. There was just
a lot of drumas.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
He hasn't met with the new coach.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Yeah, I didn't know the new coach, so I think
the books have already known this was coming. It was
just gonna be wherey to go?
Speaker 3 (14:24):
And I won't lie. I was shocked the Rams made
this move.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
So I'm excited to talk about the Rams side of
it because I don't know about you, but I right
away I thought, Okay, they are going to get so
much hype now on the next twenty four hour cycle
a talk shows because it's big, it's sexy, and they've
just gone for it, right McDuffie, Well more can you
ask when you go get Miles to that defense? My god, Chaed,
that's that's pretty terrifying.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Well, look, this Miles Garrett is better than von Miller,
but it has that sort of Von Miller Jalen Ramsey
vibe when they also had Stafford. So now they still
have staff Efor who's coming off an MVP year. Now
they're getting Miles Garrett. They've bulked up in the secondary
where they needed it with McDuffie, like you just said,
(15:09):
which is why you sent a tweet yesterday, and the
Super Bowl allows for the Rams dropped from from plus
eight hundred to plus six hundred, so eight to one
to six to one.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
No, plus five fifty, which is absurd.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Yes, so you sent out a tweet. I mean that's
truly absurd plus five point fifty. You sent out a
tweet yesterday that raised a ruckus betting the Rams not
to make the playoffs. And I could totally get why
nobody would want to bet on the Rams to win
the Super Bowl. Now there's just no value. It's moved
(15:44):
too much. But not to make the playoffs. Explain yourself.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
Explain you why it's a good bet to better team
at plus three hundred and fifty to not make the
playoffs with a quarterback who has a bad back who's
what thirty seven thirty six years old, a lot of
miles on them. I would say it's a smart bet.
And anyone's out there, it's not fun to do this,
but this is my job. I'm looking for value. No
(16:13):
value on the Super Bowl. You're literally it's only plus
two hundred differences between them missing the playoffs and them
to win the Super Bowl. Like think everything has to
go right to win Super Bowl. We only need one
or two things to go wrong to them not to
make the playoffs. And that starts with Stafford. And you know,
can they deal with a backup quarterback? Who knows that
Jimmy Garraoulp is coming back? Who knows if this rookie
(16:35):
and Ty Simpson can step in after he's only played
twelve or thirteen college games. Like, there's just a lot
there to be scared of if you're the Rams because
of that division, right, Like that that division is so tough.
Seattle forty nine ers both are going to be just
as good as they were last year, if not in
the forty nine ers case, possibly better. Right, they just
(16:56):
had so much injury. I just can't get over these odds, can't.
And the fact that you know, they play the Bills,
they played Denver, they played the Chiefs, they have all
They play the Eagles like they the Rams have a
brutal out of out of division schedule on top of
you know everything else I've talked about, which is those
(17:17):
seven prime time games.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
It's it's not gonna be easy.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
They're gonna have a long year and it's not gonna
be a letdown weak right, No, they get Arizona, they
get the Raiders. Sure that's a mini bye week, you
could say, but still it is the NFL. They catch
you sleeping, They're gonna catch you. So I couldn't believe
it when I saw those odds JAD plus three point fifty.
You just you don't really see that unless it's what
this is, which is a super team. This is truly
(17:41):
a super team. So you know, I get why the
general public is so in love with it, but I
think that's why I love how many people love my bet.
And then the missed the playoffs is just so many
Sikos out there that agree with me, which is like, dude,
you're one bad hit away, like we saw Mahomes last
year from the whole season just being over like this,
you'll lose a quarterback, even if they lose Stafford for
(18:03):
five six weeks and he comes back in that division,
and how tough the NFC is. We're not even talking
about the NFC North potentially having three teams making the playoffs,
talking about the Cowboys as well. There's just a lot
of teams that could sneak in that six seven seed
that could bump this RAMS team out. So you know,
I rather I don't want people betting on a super Bowl.
That was my whole point of this was like, don't
be betting on them at plus five fifty or plus
(18:24):
six hundred if anything takes better small bet on them
missed the playoffs, because that's where the value is. And
you know, if it's week seventeen, week sixteen, week eighteen
even and they're plus one hundred or plus one twenty
to make or miss the playoffs, you get an easy hedge.
And that's all I'm trying to do with the other day.
So yeah, that move really got me fired up because
right away I knew, oh my god, the talk shows
(18:46):
first take our guy Cowherd, they're going to be having
a field day here with this Rams team and just
talking about this shiny new toy, which is the best
defensive player in football going to this team, So MVP
Defensive Player of the Year chat.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
It's it's pretty incredible.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Rams have the shorter side to win the Super Bowl
right now, head of the Ravens, Bills.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Seahawks, and Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
So that's everything you need to know is the team
that did not get to the super Bowl last year.
Normally it's always going to be, you know, the super
Bowl champion. Not surprising it's not the Seahawks, but the
fact that it's now the Rams and then the Ravens.
That tells you everything you need to know about public
perception for everything that's happening in the NFL right now,
(19:28):
super exciting. Look to a quick word from our friends
at Zibiotics. On the other side of the break, we're
going to talk to Stanley Cup Betting Action with Mike Leaboff.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Matt Summer's almost here.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
You know what that means, beautiful weather, long days, cocktails
on the patio. Also, we both know that after a
few stiff drinks, we don't bounce back like we used to.
Sometimes we've had to choose between a great night or
a rate next day. But that was before Matt. We
(20:04):
tried pre alcohol z Biotics. Pre alcohol probiotic drink is
the world's first genetically engineered probiotic, invented by PhD scientists
to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Here's how it works.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
When you drink, alcohol gets converted into a toxic byproduct
in the gut. It's a build up of this byproduct,
not dehydration that's to blame for rough days after drinking.
Pre alcohol produces an enzyme to break down this byproduct.
Just remember to make pre alcohol your first drink of
the night. Drink responsibly and you'll feel your best tomorrow. Matt,
(20:41):
as long as we've been talking about zbiotics and pre alcohol,
you've been a big fan, isn't that right?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
I'm spending my own money on this product. It is lovely.
Highly recommend it, whether you live in the drink, in
the state in the Union like Wisconsin, or anywhere else.
Highly recommend it. The bottles, you knock them back, you
feel your best the next day. Couldn't recommend it more?
Speaker 2 (21:05):
All right, Well, listen.

we go. Let's talk some Stanley Cup Finals. Carolina Hurricanes
in the Cup for the first time in twenty years.
Last time they were in the Cup, they were led
by Rod Brindemore as a player. Now they are led
(21:53):
by Rod Brindemore as a coach. That are playing the
Vegas Golden Knights. What a miraculous freaking franchise. Third Stanley
Cup Finals in nine years of existence.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Unreal.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
That's got to be some kind of record for an
expansion franchise. One win, one loss.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Let's see what they can do.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
They took out the best team in the NHL, in
the Colorado Avalanche. Joining us to talk all things betting
on hockey's biggest stage. Our longtime friend, Crown Prince of
Long Island, ran for mayor of his town. Season ticket
holder to the New York Islanders. Loves the Islanders so
(22:35):
much he named his first daughter after the team. Former
Action Network college always good friend. Now at the New
York Post, betting expert Michael Leiboff.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
Hello, guys, Yeah, nice see you. Yeah, my first daughter
named her after the Islanders. Her name is Isla. And
then my second daughter, I named after my favorite Islanders
general manager ever, lou Lemmerene. Her name is Emmy lou So.
And we're having another kid. I'm breaking news to you, Chada,
in no way. Yeah, so in December. So I'm poshing
for the name Wade to name boy or girl to
(23:12):
name after my favorite Islander ever, Wade Wade to bluit.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
So wow, that's amazing. Congrats you guys are going for it.
Three kids, like it's going to be like three kids?
What under five?
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (23:23):
I don't has anyone ever had three kids before in
human history?
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Don't listen, don't be that way.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
I mean, I'm one of five.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
I would, I would.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
I want you know, my Chris Thanksgivings and Christmases are
chaos and I'd like more of that in my life.
So who knows, who knows how many?
Speaker 1 (23:42):
I will say that my wife and I have a tinge,
a little tinge of regret that we didn't have more kids.
We have it like around the holidays, you know, when
it's us and our two boys and her mom and
my parents and it's not as loud as we would
(24:02):
like it to be. Then we get to go away
because we're done raising kids and we don't have to
think about it, and it's just glorious, and so then
we get over it.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Yeah, yeah, I know I can see it. But yeah,
I'm excited. I mean, I need people around me, so
I'm happy to keep expanding the family. But I'm not
here to talk about that, So let's talk to some hockey.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
I was in Vegas last week, and I was in
Vegas when the Golden Knights clinched against the Avs in Vegas.
It was amazing and and the fact that Vegas has
become such a fantastic hockey town and it's had such success.
As a hockey fan, and we want to get to
the game, you know, the games tonight, and I want
you to give some people ideas and what to bet.
(24:50):
But as a hockey fan, can you put in context
at all what this run has been like for the
Golden Knights to be in the third Stanley Cup Finals,
to really never be a bad team despite being an
expansion team.
Speaker 4 (25:09):
Yeah, thirty three percent of their seasons have ended in
them in the Stanley Cup finals. Sure, I've never seen
the Islanders make a Stanley Cup final thirty six and
I've never the Islanders have never won a division. They
haven't in my lifetime. Last time they won a division
was nineteen eighty eight. And this is across all sports,
(25:30):
Like teams just accidentally win the divisions, you know, like
sometimes the division just stinks and the team will like finish.
I don't know the NFL, there's seventeen games now for
some reason, so a team will be like eight to
nine and win a division and it just happens. And
the Islanders haven't even just been able to accidentally stumble
into a division. So yeah, but I don't. What I
(25:50):
like about Vegas is they do something really revolutionary, which
is they go and get good players, which to me
sounds like a really good idea that maybe other teams
should try to.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (26:05):
He's being nice as NHL fans. I hate Vegas with
a passion. I hate all it, like the fact that
the Panthers but we're winning it like Vegas is now
always in it. The Carolina Hurricanes. Give me a Northeast team.
I know it's biased, but my god, these or Canadian
(26:25):
team at least, I can't get over these warm states
getting the best of the best hockey experience.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
It sickens me.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
I hate it so much, and I mean, I can't
even get into it because it's gonna upset me too
much and I.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Don't want to die too much of it.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
But the fact that Heart is the goalie for Vegas
as a Flyers fan chat, not that it doesn't keep
me up at night, but it does. There's some nights
all rolling better. Oh my god, my Golden child is
now in the Stanley Cup final on Vegas, so I'm
bitter across the board. I'm gonna watch it because I
love hockey, but my god, am I gonna hate watch
(26:59):
I'm just I'm rooting for her.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
I'm root for the Hurricanes. I just can't have Vegas one.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
I hate this expansion team, like you said, thirty three
percent of their existence. So my like like even he's
an Islander fan, I can't understand how suffering his life is.
But the fact that he's never seen his team win
a division and this team here is in the Stanley
Cups three times and nine years JD.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
It's sickond me.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Look the Vegas fans got spoiled very very quickly. Was
I was in Vegas for a conference the International Gaming Institute,
which is run out of UNLV has a conference every
three years and they had asked me to come and
be on one of the panels. So I was out
there and when and the night before at dinner, the
(27:42):
organizers of the conference, there were a bunch of us
at dinner and they're all huge Golden Knight fans. And
the next day when I was introduced, when our panel
was introduced, the organizer was wearing her Golden Knights jersey.
Because everyone in Vegas is so enamored with that team.
Here's what you guys want to hear, a great betting story.
(28:03):
So you know, I'm working on this book, the Number
that's going to come out next year. And one of
the guys I write about in the book is a
professional better who had been in Vegas for a long
time and went to the Golden Knights first home game
in twenty seventeen and was so thrilled with the performance.
The Knights were two and zero at the time they
(28:24):
won that game. They went up early in the first period.
The whole town is getting behind this team, and the
experience was so electric for him that he just started
scrolling around in his app looking for, you know, fun
Stanley Cup sweats to make and the Golden Knights were
three hundred to one.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
At some sports book.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
I forget which one, and he put down four hundred bucks,
which was the max he could get down, and then
all of a sudden, the Golden Knights go on this run,
and so now he's got a chance to win one
hundred and twenty grand on a bet when he made
when he was half in the bag and was just
rooting for the Golden Knights in their home opener as
a franchise, and then everyone in Vegas started offering not
(29:06):
to win the title bets, so we started hedging. And
while he was hedging, the Caps went down to nothing
in the first round of the playoffs, and they were
one of the best teams in the NHL, so their
odds to win the Stanley Cup then became forty to one.
So we put a grand down on the Caps to
win forty to one. At forty to one, because he
(29:28):
thought they lost in double overtime in the first two
games at home, like they're the better team, They've got
a shot here. So all of a sudden, the Caps
meet the Golden Knights in the finals, and he's got
the Caps at forty to one. He's got a fat
for forty grand. He's got one hundred and you know,
four hundred to win, one hundred and twenty on the
Golden Knights, and he's got some big bets at you know,
(29:50):
bad numbers on the Golden Knights to win, to not win.
He ended up winning ninety grand because he had every
base cover. Talk about sort of your professional betters hedge
and play in the field off of a crazy I'm
just going to enjoy the moment because I love the
Golden Knights bet. What do you think of that? Simon
(30:14):
drew Sika leave off Las Vegas plus one thirty, Carolina
minus one fifty. This is Game one in Raleigh tonight
eight pm Eastern. The totals five and a half. You know,
give us some initial opening thoughts on the game right now.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
Yeah, these two teams have very different paths to the final,
but they are similar teams. Carolina relentless like pressure, but
their defense forward right, they want to stop you from
scoring before anything else. In Vegas is the same way
with John Twitterrella. Who I mean, he would throw his
own kids in front of a puck to stop it
(31:00):
from reaching the goalie. So it's going to be a
game a series where the works will be gummed up
quite a bit, and I don't think scoring is We
won't see very high totals, even if you know, tonight
just ends up being a weird game where it's like
seven five. I think tomorrow or for Game two, you'll
still see these low totals and to get.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Used to that.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
And so I like the I like the zero zero
after the first period today because I just think both
these teams, First of all, Caroline has had a very
easy path and they haven't seen a team like this,
so I think they'll be you know, towing the water
kind of stuff, try to make sure that they like
the temperature before they start taking any risks, and Vegas
will sit back and enjoy that too, So I could
(31:40):
see this one starting pretty slowly. Both goalies have been
in good form too, coming in. I think both goalies
have big picture question marks, just haven't been all that
good for the season, but turned it on in the playoffs.
So we could see the goaltending kind of just decide
who ends up winning the series, because I think the
two teams are pretty equal. But yeah, I like that.
(32:02):
If you you want like a first goal scorer, bet
I think William Carrier on in Carolina would be an
interesting one. He's a former Vegas Golden Night, a guy
who just gets around the front of the net, and
I think both teams are going to do basically everything
to shut down the other's top two lines. John Torderella
is a master at taken away his opponent's biggest strength.
(32:25):
So I think that those bottom six for each team,
So that's we're gonna see some some guys from from
the bottom of the lineup step up. So Carrier to
me interesting storyline with him being a Vegas gold to
Knight who want to Stanley Cup with them. He'll be
a big number to get on the board first as well,
So yeah, it'd be interesting series. I'm pulling for the Knights.
(32:45):
I think there's there. There'd be the team i'd want
to bet. It's not the most exciting number. But you
Simon talked about a hate watch before. I'm still embroiled
in a in a decade long hate hate watch of
John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs. But as fate
would have it, they got tavaresed by Mitch Marner who
plays for Vegas and he but the difference is he
(33:06):
got run out of town by his fans and media,
whereas we kind of got on our hands and knees
to keep Tavares around. And the big thing was he
just could never perform for Toronto in the playoffs. And
now he's a const my favorite. So I would love
nothing more to see than see Marner win the Stanley
Cup in his first year in Vegas, win the con
smythe and then bring the cup to his hometown of Toronto.
(33:26):
Uh for for his day with the cup. It would
be beautiful for me.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
So wait, but what you just gave us a first
goal bet? Yes, but I don't know if you gave
us a different.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
Bet on either the sides or on the total, which
is five and a half.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
I would, like, I said, I like the first period
to be zero zero.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Ah okay, I guess that.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
And then the first goal would be William carry because
like I said, I think that these there's gonna be
like a fencing match in the in the beginning, like
they're just going to be poking and prod and and
I think, unless you know, like I said, they could
go gangbusters. But I think that first period zero zero
bet would be one to play the entire series because
they just these two teams both just love stopping pucks
(34:09):
more than they like scoring on.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
I let's do a quick word from our friends at

or Virginia to play. Terms and conditions apply. Concerned about
gambling in Florida called one eight three to three playwise.
In Indiana, if you were something you know as a
gambling problem and wants help, call one eight hundred and
(36:04):
nine with it. In Arizona, Ohio and Virginia call one
eight hundred My reset gambling problem called one eight hundred
gambler in Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, and Tennessee. All right,
so you just mentioned you might like Vegas in the
series Vegas plus one twenty five Carolina minus one fifty five.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Give us your take on why you like Vegas in
the series.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Yeah, Carolina hasn't They they play a very specific style.
They're an outlier with how they play. They they're relentless.
They man to man pressure all up and down the ice,
and if you can't CounterPunch, you're going to be in trouble.
And the teams that they played so far, Simon's Flyers
for sure. Ottawa was just so banged up in Montreal.
(36:51):
They're just not built to absorb that pressure kind of
weather a storm and then spring counters the other way.
Whereas Vegas that's one of their strengths, like with Marner
jack Ico, even their their defense is really mobile and
they can they make great breakout passes. Rasmus Anderson know
how to finch Shaye Theodore like these guys will join
the rush to create on man rushes and that's how
you beat Carolina. Every year we see it with Rod
(37:13):
Brenda Moore teams, they get to the to the Eastern
Conference Final and then they run into a team that
can beat them on the counter. They've done it against
the Rangers, They've done it against the Panthers, and I
think Vegas is built to do that. So I think
that in a series that looks pretty much like a
coin flip, the stylistic advantage, to me, it goes to
Vegas with their ability to counter punch. So yeah, I'd
(37:36):
much rather bet Vegas. And if you can, you know,
maybe you wait, maybe they go down one nothing here
and you bet them at an even bigger number. But
I would lean towards Vegas. And like I said, it's
just not the most exciting price out there.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Simon, what are you hearing from inside your circles?
Speaker 5 (37:53):
Yeah, hockey's a little different professional betters, right, It's especially
in matchup like this where it's so emaily match. I
think Carolina is the favorite rate with the minus one fifty. Yeah,
serious price. But you know, most guys I talked to,
I feel like they're doing the lead Bofstone, right.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
They're kind of taking a position after game one.
Speaker 5 (38:11):
They're kind of going to see how these two styles
play against each other, and.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
I am biased. I'll be like I said, up for
the get go.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
I just think this Panthers team is so talented, so
I'm excited to see what Vegas.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
Is going to do.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Hurricanes, Hurricanes, Yes, yes, you're confusing your Sun Belt Carolina.
No one, No one cares about them teams.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Yeah, exactly, exactly.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
That's a Chad Millman's ESPN days take. Why are we
showing highlights on the Florida Panthers game on Sports Center.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
I've come around on the hockey. I have gotten full
into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Like I love the.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Sounds, I love the checking, I love the intensity. I
really got into the Canadian series against the Hurricanes and
then their series before that. Like I just was really
enjoying watching.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
The NFL playoffs so far. So I'm tuned in leave off.
Speaker 5 (39:06):
And that's a really impressive of the Like, you know
that series, I thought Montreal was gonna steal it.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
They just took prevent them.
Speaker 5 (39:13):
And you know this, Caroline, say what you want about
this team, man, I know they're they're better and they're talented,
but man are they just tough as hell?
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Like they just beat you up.
Speaker 5 (39:25):
So that's why like, I can't wait to see you, like,
you know, if this is gonna be fall in the
middle of the ice. I can't see these two types
of styles because there's gonna be two teams just grinding
out the entire game. So, Chad, you said you love
playoff hockey, this is like as good as it gets.
These are two teams are just so physical. I can
see by game two or three they're gonna absolutely just
hate each other and we're gonna get it plenty of
(39:46):
good fights too. So I really can't wait for the series.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
It's so interesting to me, you know, to get into
the weeds here, Tortorella came in and you mentioned Tortorella
leaboff and took over this team that seemed like it
either was exactly what it should be or wasn't playing
up to its potential when he came in to take
(40:11):
it over. As the season went on, and all of
a sudden, clearly the answers they weren't playing up to
their potential.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
What switch did he flip? Leave off?
Speaker 4 (40:23):
The previous coach, Bruce Cassi won a Stanley Cup. Yeah, nice, right,
but he's notorious for having a really short short shelf
life with his players, his old team in Boston who
he went to a Stanley Cup final with basically they
revolted against him. Goes to Vegas, they win a Stanley
Cup a couple years later, and like they sort of
(40:45):
revolted and made it pretty clear that you know, they
weren't going to be able to they tuned him out,
and then they bring in Tortorella, who's also got a
short shelf life. But yeah, it doesn't matter when you
bring someone in with seven games left in regular season
and now for all his faulse what Torterello is really
good at is is just getting teams to be hard
to break down. And he's done it in a pretty
(41:06):
quick time. And Cassidy's the same way, so it's not
like he had too much heavy lifting to do. But yeah,
he's got a He's got a lot out of a
group of players that now are starting to hit their potential.
Marner for sure, it looks like a new player under Tortorella.
Tomash Hurtle, who I like he's thirty five to one
most goals in the series. I think that's a really
good bet. He's he was really struggling and Torterella seemed
(41:30):
to have got him on the right, on the right path.
He got William Carlson back, who Torterella did not like
in in Columbus. Then now he's coaching wild Bill in
in Vegas and the two of them seem really chummy,
and he's playing great hockey and it's kind of his
return has balanced that lineup really well. So yeah, he's
just he's done a masterful job. He's and he still
(41:52):
looks you know, he's handsome as ever, weathered skin, just
a guy that you'd love to have a have like
a nice dinner with. But yeah, he's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
If Taylor Sheridan were doing shows about you know, Canadian ranchmen, ranchers,
I feel like he'd be the prototype.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
But he's a he's a got the thickest Massachusetts accent
you've you've ever heard, you got it maybe Old Steel
Millen in Fall River, Massachusetts. If Taylor Sheridan wants to
get into some rest belt.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
I've been. I've been to Fall River. Did a Chris
Herron story.
Speaker 4 (42:28):
I think that's where Aaron Hernandez is from.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
No, Aaron Hernandez from Bristolnecticut. He's from Bristol, Connecticut, who
I remember did.
Speaker 4 (42:36):
He get in trouble in Fall River. Maybe he got
in trouble in Fall River.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
I don't know if he got in trouble in Fall River,
but we had fucking cruise out at the wake half
a mile from ESPN's campus while the cops were dredging
the lake for weapons.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
I think he has some connection to Fall River, but
we'll leave it at that.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
Anyways, Uh, you just gave a little bit of a
hint for one of the props. I want to talk
about most goals in the series. Anyone for con smythe
anyone else for most goals, anything for exact games, series,
exact results. What are some other things you're looking at?
Speaker 4 (43:16):
Yeah, so I think Tomash Hurtle. If you're going to
bet a Vegas player for most goals, Carolina spreads it around,
so you can always just look for a long shot
for them. Logan Stankovin was sixty five to one. I
didn't get invited on this show, but on another show
I gave him out for most goals for round one
and he hit that one. So someone like like William
(43:36):
Carey is two fifty to one. If he scores two
or three goals, he could be in the running just
because of how low scoring the series will be. Con
Smyth though, is interesting because if Vegas wins, it's going
to be really hard for the media not to give
it to Mitch Marner because of the story right leaves Toronto.
Most of the media emanates from Toronto and hockey. It's
a great storyline. So you could just bet Mitch Mardner
(44:00):
to win the con Smyth if you like Vegas, and
you'll get plus one seventy, which is a better price
than the series price obviously, And for Carolina it's still open.
Taylor Hall, Fred Anderson. They're single digits, but there's a
couple other guys that with big series they could kind
of catch Hall, Stank Covid, Jackson Blake, which is seth.
(44:21):
Jarvis is fifty to one, Sebastian Aho, They're both fifty
to one. They're top line players, the two most talented
players on Carolina at least at forward. So those were
my two guys on Carolina, Jarvis and Ajo. Whereas I
think if you're betting a con Smyth winner from Vegas,
it's Marner or bust. It's really hard to see someone
(44:42):
someone else taking it from him, and part of that
is Carter Heart's very kind of complicated past, and I
don't think that even if he's the best player in
the series, a lot of hockey writers want to vote
that story in. So I think it's it's Marner or
bust for Vegas leab Off.
Speaker 1 (44:59):
You know, this is a literate betting podcast, maybe the
most literate of all betting podcasts. And you know, Fyodor
Dostoevsky is probably our spirit author, and you're familiar with
a life of struggle and pain and the incessant nature
(45:21):
of all of that. Matt Mitchell would like to know
if this will continue for the Buffalo Sabers and the
people of Buffalo. That series with the Canadians was exhilarating
but also brutal for the Sabers, and I really wanted
That's why I was into it.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
I wanted the Sabers to win. You got any thoughts
for Matt Mitchell before we go.
Speaker 4 (45:46):
I mean, what's nice about Buffalo across all sports is
like they deliver what they're supposed to deliver. It wouldn't
have been wouldn't have been fine if they you know,
especially the first year, if they're the drought. They make
a Stanley Cup Final. Know they can't do that. They
get the little you know, pat on the back now
and now that expectations will be raised, that's when we
(46:09):
can really get into the pain for the Sabers. But
I do want to say if you on YouTube, you
can watch the full nineteen ninety nine Stanley Cup Final,
which is the famous Brettthole skating the Crease Stars Savers series.
You'll be shocked to know that Buffalo didn't win it,
but they that series is such compelling drama and Gary
(46:34):
Thorn is on the call, and it's just it's sports
that it's best. So I would just say Matt can
always just go and watch that to soothe his pain.
Bill Sabers. It's so good. It's just you know, Old's
brought broadcast style right to the point. There's no here's
the celebrities at the game, and you know these weird
dances that people do, and it's just sports, beautiful sports.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
That's hockey leave off from the New York Post or
former Action Network colleague.
Speaker 2 (47:01):
That's our show. Great work, Michael.

He's under pressure, he's sacks and there.
Speaker 5 (47:23):
It is a record that has stood nearly a quarner
of a century has a new leaders. Thirty year old
Miles Garrett records his NFL record twenty third sack of
the year.
