For the twenty five finals I have been to, This
is number two. And I know a lot of Knicks
fans like, how could this not be number one? But
for me being at Game seven of the twenty sixteen Finals,
when the Cavaliers come back from three to one, Lebron
has that huge buck, Kyrie has that huge shut. This
is you know, a Warriors team that had set historic records.
They were never supposed to win this game. It had

never done been done before in the history of the Finals.
Still they're the only team to have done it. I
think at Game seven like that still ranks is the
best game for me that I have ever been witnessed to.
But this is definitely number two. And as you point out, Colin,
I have seen so many Finals games and this is
number two.

This was incredible. The mood in the building.

I got to give credit to Knicks fans, even when
they were getting trounced in.

The first half.

Yeah, the fans weren't booing, they weren't leaving, They were
just sort of waiting. They know this Knicks team has
comebacks and and they went wild in the second half.

After the game, I'm walking on the court and nobody
wanted to leave. I mean, they ran through every New
York song, Frank Sinatra, they ran through Billy Joel New
York songs, they ran through Jay Z New York songs.
They were like looking for more songs to play because
nobody was leaving. I ended up standing around with Jerry Seinfeld,
Larry David, and John McEnroe, all guys who have been
watching this team for a long time.

To me, He's like, I've been a fan of the
team since the sixties. He said, I have never seen
anything like it. And I ended up walking out of
the building with Bill Bradley and he you know, from
that team, that killer team, And he said, he goes, look,
you know these guys will replace us if they win
this title. And I said, well, I think that you
guys should give them their rings. So if this happens

at the Nick Swinter title, I'm the first one lobbying
that seventy three team should be the one giving them
the rings.

Yeah, Dollar Bill, prior to Princeton in this series and
Webby's numbers are very good and I say Mitch Johnson
and the Spur staff really misstep here by not getting
him a break in the second half. When you play
as much defense and as fluida defense, he covers so
much grunt, you got to get him four minutes off.
(06:13):
I mean, he just you can't play JJ Reddick got
a lot of heat for this. Remember when he wouldn't
take starters off the floor. Wemby gives you such defensive effort.
You got to get him breaks in the second half.
But let's talk about his offense. There have been suggestions
he has to develop his offense. Give me your thoughts
on that, because it's being discussed league wide right now.

Oh yeah, yeah. And look, he's twenty two years old.
He's not a finished product. I would actually argue that
Miss Johnson and the coaching staff should have given him
more breaks in the first half, because you know, the
Knicks are never going to pull their starters and just
let the game go right, So you know, he's got
to play the whole game and they should have given
him more rest, so he could have been stronger in
the fourth. But that's the other thing that he just
has to improve himself over the course the next few
(06:53):
off seasons. He of course has been working on his body,
getting stronger, working on his endurance, but that has to continue.
You can see him off balance and fourth quarters you
can see him get tired. That has to change. He
also needs more of a sort of go to move
right because sometimes he's just floating out there and doesn't
know exactly where he should be, and he's quote taking
what the defense gives him. But the great, great, great
great players, they demand the defense to do certain things.
(07:16):
He needs to be able to do that. And then
it's a little bit mental too. And look you and
I when you're twenty two years old. I always say
this to my own children who are teenagers. Let's be honest, before,
like maybe age eight, you're not even really like a
sentient human. So if you're only twenty two, how much
life experience can you even have had? When he missed
those two free throws, that is the kind of moment
(07:39):
that I don't expect to see from him two years
from now. So it's just a little bit physical, a
little bit mental, and a little bit X and O,
and I think we're going to see all of that.

It's going to come.

He's just so young, Yeah, NBA has always been even
for the prodigies, blunders before banners. That's the reality of
this sport. Great, let's talk MVP of the series. I
love OgH and interesting player because he again doesn't have
a go to offensive move. Brunson's kind of the most popular.
Kat's probably the most gifted offensively. You've been around this

Nick team for years since he came from Toronto. Your
thoughts on Og? Who would you vote MVP? And sort
of for the non Nick fan that maybe doesn't quite
see the value you know Brunson, you know Kat, He's
kind of a special kid.
Speaker 6 (08:24):
Oh absolutely, I love this trade.
Speaker 7 (08:26):
When they made it, you know, he was, you know,
up in Toronto. I think a lot of people didn't
know him or his game, but he absolutely had the
tools to excel in the way.

That the Knicks like to play.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
And a lot of these teams that win NBA Finals
it's about fit. We heard all of this stuff from
Becky Hammond and other voices earlier in this series. Can
Jalen Brunson Can a guy this short lead a team
to an NBA Finals? Well, he can if there are
the right pieces around him, and Og is such a
huge part of that.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
He's huge.
Speaker 7 (08:54):
First of all, you need all that size around to
Jalen Brunson. He's got a dagger corner three and he's
been able to take more reins in the offense than
we saw him do with the Raptors, and obviously a
fantastic defender as well.
Speaker 6 (09:06):
It is interesting about MVP. I think that.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
Og has it among all the voters I have talked
to about. You know, oh, he'd be the leader in
the clubhouse right now, he's the guy who has to
have it. But you might get into a little bit
with fans one of those twenty fifteen discussions. I don't
know if you remember that series. You know, we had
Andrew Grudala win MVP. Steph Curry didn't win it. Lebron
James got four votes, he didn't win it, and a

lot of fans have held on to that for a
long time, being what are you talking about?
Speaker 6 (09:33):
Steph was the heart of that team, and I.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
Think we'll see a little bit of that from fans
if OG ends up winning MVP, because Jalen Brunston is
Jalen Brunson. And I will say one thing about Brunson
and where he would rank and sort of MVP thoughts
for me. His numbers obviously haven't been up to par
of OG or even Kat. I mean, Kat's on off
numbers are crazy if you go look at them. But
the fact that they have fought back in all these games,

the fact that the Spurs have lef every single Finals
game in the final two minutes and the Knicks have
turned around and won three of those games.

That is Jalen Brunson. When you are that short, when you.
Speaker 7 (10:09):
Do have the Becky Hammonds of the world or all
the other people saying, hey, I don't know if you
can make it in this league. You have to develop
every single other part of your game. Nothing can be
left on the table. And Jalen Brunson's relentlessness has powered
this team. And I would actually credit his size for
a little bit of that. And there is nobody else
who would have won them some of these finals games
(10:32):
with that kind of character. So I think it's an
interesting discussion. OG has obviously got the numbers, but it's
like any Finals team, right, A lot of people contribute.

Finally, Rachel Nichols joining us. This is our twenty fifth
NBA Finals. You know this will be the eighth champion
in eight years, and I've said, I think what we
are in because of the new CBA. You don't get
stacked teams, You don't get a lot of trades. You
have to stockpile picks. If you have one player that's
maybe overpaid, it becomes much more more punitive now, you know.
(11:03):
I obviously Daron Fox has had a really tough series.
Do you when you talk about the Spurs, I mean,
I think you could really the Wemby the lack of substitutions.
Dylan Harper didn't have a shot in the last ten minutes.
They got into the bonus with eight minutes left and
had one shot in the paint. Do you kind of
sense here a growing criticism that is Mitch the guy.
(11:25):
We know the team's young, but this has been if
there's one if there's one person, it's not going to
be Wemby that if they lose tomorrow night and they
lose in five, the heat's going to come in for
Mitch Johnson. Have you sensed that in this series?
Speaker 6 (11:42):
Well, first of.

All, the heat definitely might be coming from other places.
It's not coming within the Spurs organization. They have tremendous
faith in him, and it reminds me a little bit.
This situation of Joe Mizula.
Speaker 6 (11:52):
Remember when he.
Speaker 7 (11:53):
First took over the Celtics. Look, he made some mistakes,
he did some things. Boston fans wanted him fired. I
mean there was a real movement for that. And now
they think he's the greatest coach in the history of
the world right because of his relentlessness and the way
he coaches that team and the fact that he won
them a title. So I expect mix Johnson to grow
into this role even more than he has. He's already
been on the Coach of the Year ballot, he was
(12:14):
a finalist. I think that he has complete faith within
the organization, including with the players. He and Wenby have
a great relationship. The Darren Fox question is a little
bit more interesting to me. His big contract doesn't even
kick in until next year, and you got Dylan Harper there,
who obviously is ready to take more of a role,
especially next season. It's just a matter of if they
get an offer that's really good, you know, they've got

to look at it.

Who else in the.

League needs a point guard? And then you know you
still need a finisher. Big men don't finish in the
same way that guards can, and that is why they
brought Fox in. Remember he was clutch player of the
Year in Sacramento. So they've got to make sure if
they do trade him, whoever they bring in, whoever they
develop with Dylan, is a real finisher, because Wendy is
going to need that compliment no matter how well he

developed and players over the years.

You don't have to be here all the time. You'll

That's the advantage having a veteran team. You can cancel

I get a lot of purity here, a lot of
purity testers. Can we just acknowledge one thing and it's
not necessarily in defense of Texas Tech, but it's in
defense of all college athletes and what they're sort of

I want to talk one more time about the tech
tech situation with Brandon Sorosby in the NFL. I talked
to a CEO this past week of a pro sports
franchise in America, and he was talking about the NFL,
and he said, in his league, he said, it's very
black and white. For instance, in the NFL, never bet

on the NFL. If you work in the NFL, never
bet in the NFL, and never bet in the facility.
That's reasonable, that's that seems very reasonable. But that's not
what the NCAA bylaws say. And this is with impressionable
nineteen twenty twenty one, twenty two year old kids often
men who have phones in their pocket, don't bet on
(15:43):
anything ever. Okay, that's that's not realistic. This country, the
United States States tried to ban alcohol. Maybe you remember
there was a guy named Al in Chicago who didn't
want to play by those rules. Eventually none of us did.
(16:04):
It is ridiculous. In twenty twenty six, you are the
overly re rigid parent. If you're gonna tell your kids
and you're managing an entire athletic department, I mean, you're
off in La law Land. Don't bet anything ever. They're
gonna vape, They're gonna sex, they're gonna drink, and they're
(16:25):
gonna gamble. You have the kid, you may be the
lucky parent. Your little angel doesn't do any of them.
That's rare, and they're gonna make way more mistakes in
life at twenty one with a few dollars in their pocket.
Now with nil transferring new parts of the country, don't
have a lot of friends there. It's a lot to
ask of young people. Never bet ever on anything. I'm sorry,

that's an unrealistic chaperone. So never forget the just Say
No campaign, widely viewed as a failure. Just say no.
Maybe we're not trying to create rebellious kids. I am
much more in life about regulation and education, not elimination

and prohibition. Let's regulate, let's educate, let's monitor. Here's Texas
Tech once again. They're athletic director with this transfer quarterback
who got himself in trouble by doing something that was
pretty predictable in twenty twenty six.

There's no reason whatsoever to question the integrity of our
athletics department or the competitive product that we put on
the fields or on the courts each and every time
that we go out. Integrity of the game is sacred,
and that's why we've gone to such great lengths to

Uh. They there was a proposal to allow college athletes. Realistically, okay,
you can bet pro sports. That makes sense. You're a kid,
you grew up Minnesota. Now you're you're an athlete, and
uh you know, u tep New Mexico State gives you scholarship.
You miss your parents, you know, and and in a

way to connect with Minnesotas, you're betting the t Wolves
playoff game. That's the end of the world. But I
I find this, you know, prohibition, it doesn't work, and
it doesn't work with young people. It creates rebellion. So
you got to start from a more reasonable place. They

had a proposal to let them bet pro sports if
they wanted to, and that got shot down. So and
then this this goes back. You know, Texas Tech now
is viewed and there doesn't appear to be any proof
that this young player who transferred bet any Texas Tech
sporting events. At this point, for the record, we all
defended Pete Rose and gambling was illegal and he was

a grown up in a managerial position. This is a
college kid. You know. I'm not ice cream for breakfast parent.
I'm not a permissive parent, but you got to start
from realistic places. If curfew is nine forty five, your
kids are breaking curfew, I'm sorry. I got six kids,
they're breaking curfew. And sometimes I'm gonna do it just

to spite you, because I think it's ridiculous. J Mac,

there's questions around the league. I mean, I think, and

See, the problem with the Baker situation is Todd Bowles
loses Baker, he's losing his job, right because Baker keeps
him in the hunt for the playoffs. And if you
lose Baker and you say we're not gonna pay him,
we're going.

over for him.

But how about this the Detroit Pistons, Yes, are now

Okay, So this is why Detroit makes great sense. Not

he's a shot initiator. Also, Austin's not a great defensive player.

at their roster composition. They have a defensive center Robinson,

offensive center cat, two wings that can defend and shoot threes,
Og and McHale Bridges. They've got kind of a rebounder,
defensive guy first, second, third, Josh Hart. What really makes
the nick special isn't just talent, high end talent, it's
roster construction and roster composition. I mean, the problem with
the Spurs right now is if Dylan Harper's not he

needs another year in the gym. He's not a shooter,
and that's what I think really hurts them right now.
They have more raw talent in San Antonio, but their
roster composition. Daron Fox is let not healthy, Dylan Harper
needs to work in his jumper castle. I know what
I get. Wemby's not refined yet and they need I
would say they need a better athlete at center when

Wenby goes to the when he goes to the bench,
they need They need a better, more athletic Not that
you're going to find another Wemby, but the roster composition
in this league, with the new CBA, you're not buying
your way out of average. You have to draft and
roster composition your way out of holes. You can't just

So Austin Reeves the Detroit it's a great fit.

go look at Brunson and Brunson isn't as large and
is not as offensively gifted, but Brunson gives you over
seventy games a year. It's really the ethos of those

Villanova guys. They really play hard, not highly emotional. Uh
Josh Hart Bridges Brunson, very supportive of each other when
they have a bad night, a bad shot, very supportive.
And the dude plays seventy one games. So you know,
it's interesting if I if I said to you who
should Let's let's just say you and I are sitting down.

Who's all NBA? Now, Aunt, Wemby. There's a couple easy
all NBA guys, you know, Ant and Wemby. That's all NBA.
And then you start having to make choices here and
you say, well, Luca, okay, but but but again, where's
(35:30):
the defense? Is he available? I think there's two guys
all NBA nobody. We're gonna go with Wemby and we're
gonna go with Aunt. Then I think the arguments begin.
Everybody else has a hole and you can keep denying it.
But Luca is a defensive liability, and he's not available
(35:50):
very often, certainly not as often as you'd want. So
the other thing about Brunson as a small player who
has the ball in his hands. He's given you thirty
eight minutes a game in the playoffs, so he doesn't
miss starts. Remember, do you guys remember Game one? He
got hurt twice? He got hurt twice in Game one?

Who delivered in the fourth? Here comes Brunson. So I
mean this is a you know, thirty eight minutes, seventy
one plus games, gonna play hurt, very supportive. Wemby and
Ant are first team All NBA on my All NBA team.
I think kid Cunningham's got to be somewhere on there.
You know. You you give me Caid Cunningham and Luca

and you'd think this is crazy? Is I know Cai's
gonna play that That matters to me. Also, it should
be noted you say what, Jalen Bruns can't be on
that team. The Knicks are the best fourth quarter offense
since net ratings were established, and he has the on
(37:00):
his hands. So you know, and I've said all year
I thought he was a very good player. I don't
think he's great, my bad, and he hasn't had a
great he hasn't had the most efficient series. He's going
up against the vawn Castle. But if you're talking about
fourth quarter availability minutes played. I also think one of
the testaments to Brunson, he's willing to go off ball.
(37:21):
He's like, listen, I'll move off ball. I don't know,
it's a I don't know, it's just it's just interesting
to look at who's really a star in New York, Eli,
Jeter and Brunson, and it's it's kind of no nonsense
available play through injuries, be really good in the biggest moment.

I mean that was always Eli. You're like, Eli's kind
of a C plus regular season quarterback. He was great
when it mattered. Brunson kind of a small defensive liability.
He's great in the fourth quarter. Derek Jeter, now he's
a lifetime three to zero two hitter. I think I
think what was always magical about Jeter is that he

just didn't dip. Most guys in the playoffs don't hit
like they do in the regular season. Jeter's career average
in Jeter's playoff average, if I recall or very very similar,
he was great and he was very very good in
the regular season. He was very very good, and he
was always at his best in the very biggot bats
in the very big moments. So and they all three,
by the way, Brunson, Eli and Jeter, they stayed out
of the spotlight. What about Jeter the gift baskets, give
(38:29):
me a break in New York page six, that's the
big hot take. He was single. I mean, they kind
of stayed out of the limelight. I mean, I can
give you a top five or six guys that came
into New York. Now, now I will say Reggie Jackson
was a star. He played for the Oakland A's Charlie Finley,
the crazy Owner, Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter. You know,

back in the seventies they end up in New York
and Reggie, Joe name it. There have been stars in
New York who soaked it up, leaned in. Joe Namath,
Reggie Jackson. That's pre social media, that's pre internet. That's
a different world. Now you get burned doing that stuff.
Look at this. Jeter hit my bad Jeter hit three

ten in the regular season, playoff average three eight. He
was always the same guy. So that's my rant on
New York, New York is that Brunson, Eli, Jeter. They're
not star for affection. They're not star for attention. There
is something to be said in New York. You know,
there's an old NFL GM you used to have a theory,
and his theory was in port cities, New York, New Orleans, Miami,

San Francisco, port cities. Character matters more in roster composition
and who you draft, because in port cities there's bigger nightlife.
So when you go to a you know, New York, Miami,
San Francisco, La, New Orleans, Port cities, things get a

little cra things go those sideways, and so character matters
more than that. Was always kind of the feeling when
Dave wantstat you know, and Jimmy Johnson one of the
Miami Dolphins you had, You had the draft guys that
love football, because if you didn't love football, you would
love Miami. There has a lot to do, all right,

is you know, a Warriors team that had set historic records.
They were never supposed to win this game. It had

never done been done before in the history of the Finals.
Still they're the only team to have done it. I
think at Game seven like that still ranks is the
best game for me that I have ever been witnessed to.
But this is definitely number two. And as you point out, Colin,
I have seen so many Finals games and this is
number two.

I got to give credit to Knicks fans, even when

watching this team for a long time.

guys should give them their rings. So if this happens

much grunt, you got to get him four minutes off.

I mean, he just you can't play JJ Reddick got
a lot of heat for this. Remember when he wouldn't
take starters off the floor. Wemby gives you such defensive effort.
You got to get him breaks in the second half.
But let's talk about his offense. There have been suggestions
he has to develop his offense. Give me your thoughts
on that, because it's being discussed league wide right now.

Oh yeah, yeah. And look, he's twenty two years old.
He's not a finished product. I would actually argue that
Miss Johnson and the coaching staff should have given him
more breaks in the first half, because you know, the
Knicks are never going to pull their starters and just
let the game go right, So you know, he's got
to play the whole game and they should have given
him more rest, so he could have been stronger in
the fourth. But that's the other thing that he just
has to improve himself over the course the next few
(06:53):
off seasons. He of course has been working on his body,
getting stronger, working on his endurance, but that has to continue.
You can see him off balance and fourth quarters you
can see him get tired. That has to change. He
also needs more of a sort of go to move
right because sometimes he's just floating out there and doesn't
know exactly where he should be, and he's quote taking
what the defense gives him. But the great, great, great
great players, they demand the defense to do certain things.
(07:16):
He needs to be able to do that. And then
it's a little bit mental too. And look you and
I when you're twenty two years old. I always say
this to my own children who are teenagers. Let's be honest, before,
like maybe age eight, you're not even really like a
sentient human. So if you're only twenty two, how much
life experience can you even have had? When he missed
those two free throws, that is the kind of moment

that I don't expect to see from him two years
from now. So it's just a little bit physical, a
little bit mental, and a little bit X and O,
and I think we're going to see all of that.

He's just so young, Yeah, NBA has always been even
for the prodigies, blunders before banners. That's the reality of

Nick team for years since he came from Toronto. Your
thoughts on Og? Who would you vote MVP? And sort
of for the non Nick fan that maybe doesn't quite
see the value you know Brunson, you know Kat, He's
kind of a special kid.

When they made it, you know, he was, you know,
up in Toronto. I think a lot of people didn't
know him or his game, but he absolutely had the
tools to excel in the way.

it's about fit. We heard all of this stuff from
Becky Hammond and other voices earlier in this series. Can
Jalen Brunson Can a guy this short lead a team
to an NBA Finals? Well, he can if there are
the right pieces around him, and Og is such a
huge part of that.

First of all, you need all that size around to
Jalen Brunson. He's got a dagger corner three and he's
been able to take more reins in the offense than
we saw him do with the Raptors, and obviously a

Og has it among all the voters I have talked
to about. You know, oh, he'd be the leader in
the clubhouse right now, he's the guy who has to

Andrew Grudala win MVP. Steph Curry didn't win it. Lebron
James got four votes, he didn't win it, and a

lot of fans have held on to that for a

Jalen Brunson. And I will say one thing about Brunson
and where he would rank and sort of MVP thoughts
for me. His numbers obviously haven't been up to par
of OG or even Kat. I mean, Kat's on off
numbers are crazy if you go look at them. But
the fact that they have fought back in all these games,

the fact that the Spurs have lef every single Finals
game in the final two minutes and the Knicks have
turned around and won three of those games.

That is Jalen Brunson. When you are that short, when you.

Do have the Becky Hammonds of the world or all
the other people saying, hey, I don't know if you
can make it in this league. You have to develop
every single other part of your game. Nothing can be

this team. And I would actually credit his size for

who would have won them some of these finals games

with that kind of character. So I think it's an
interesting discussion. OG has obviously got the numbers, but it's
like any Finals team, right, A lot of people contribute.

in eight years, and I've said, I think what we
are in because of the new CBA. You don't get

I obviously Daron Fox has had a really tough series.

into this role even more than he has. He's already
been on the Coach of the Year ballot, he was

a finalist. I think that he has complete faith within
the organization, including with the players. He and Wenby have
a great relationship. The Darren Fox question is a little
bit more interesting to me. His big contract doesn't even
kick in until next year, and you got Dylan Harper there,
who obviously is ready to take more of a role,
especially next season. It's just a matter of if they
get an offer that's really good, you know, they've got

still need a finisher. Big men don't finish in the

develop with Dylan, is a real finisher, because Wendy is
going to need that compliment no matter how well he

tech situation with Brandon Sorosby in the NFL. I talked
to a CEO this past week of a pro sports
franchise in America, and he was talking about the NFL,
and he said, in his league, he said, it's very
black and white. For instance, in the NFL, never bet

on the NFL. If you work in the NFL, never
bet in the NFL, and never bet in the facility.
That's reasonable, that's that seems very reasonable. But that's not
what the NCAA bylaws say. And this is with impressionable
nineteen twenty twenty one, twenty two year old kids often
men who have phones in their pocket, don't bet on

anything ever. Okay, that's that's not realistic. This country, the
United States States tried to ban alcohol. Maybe you remember
there was a guy named Al in Chicago who didn't
want to play by those rules. Eventually none of us did.

It is ridiculous. In twenty twenty six, you are the
overly re rigid parent. If you're gonna tell your kids
and you're managing an entire athletic department, I mean, you're
off in La law Land. Don't bet anything ever. They're
gonna vape, They're gonna sex, they're gonna drink, and they're

gonna gamble. You have the kid, you may be the
lucky parent. Your little angel doesn't do any of them.
That's rare, and they're gonna make way more mistakes in
life at twenty one with a few dollars in their pocket.
Now with nil transferring new parts of the country, don't
have a lot of friends there. It's a lot to
ask of young people. Never bet ever on anything. I'm sorry,

that's an unrealistic chaperone. So never forget the just Say
No campaign, widely viewed as a failure. Just say no.
Maybe we're not trying to create rebellious kids. I am
much more in life about regulation and education, not elimination

who got himself in trouble by doing something that was

they wanted to, and that got shot down. So and
then this this goes back. You know, Texas Tech now
is viewed and there doesn't appear to be any proof
that this young player who transferred bet any Texas Tech
sporting events. At this point, for the record, we all
defended Pete Rose and gambling was illegal and he was

a grown up in a managerial position. This is a
college kid. You know. I'm not ice cream for breakfast parent.
I'm not a permissive parent, but you got to start
from realistic places. If curfew is nine forty five, your

can defend. I don't have Jalen Brunson's not a great
defensive player Steph Curries. Now I don't need five great
defensive players. He gives me offense in Detroit. That is
an interesting fit. He's good and again I'm I like it.

Mahomes Rallan. I like Austin at a number on a

team that has defensive wings and a rim protector. Austin
works Detroit's a great spot for him.

Now he's a little older and would be cheaper, has

Reeves does that, we can initiate offense and Caid can
rest a little bit.

If you look at the Knicks success, so much of
their success roster composition. So the guy who has the
ball the most is Jalen Brunson. So they have avar
Adol the backup to him, although they put him on
the floor of the other game yeah together, which they
hadn't done the whole series. So he's got a backup
that doesn't play a ton. But also if you look
at their roster composition. They have a defensive center Robinson,

offensive center cat, two wings that can defend and shoot threes,
Og and McHale Bridges. They've got kind of a rebounder,
defensive guy first, second, third, Josh Hart. What really makes
the nick special isn't just talent, high end talent, it's
roster construction and roster composition. I mean, the problem with
the Spurs right now is if Dylan Harper's not he

needs another year in the gym. He's not a shooter,
and that's what I think really hurts them right now.
They have more raw talent in San Antonio, but their
roster composition. Daron Fox is let not healthy, Dylan Harper
needs to work in his jumper castle. I know what
I get. Wemby's not refined yet and they need I
would say they need a better athlete at center when

Wenby goes to the when he goes to the bench,
they need They need a better, more athletic Not that
you're going to find another Wemby, but the roster composition
in this league, with the new CBA, you're not buying
your way out of average. You have to draft and
roster composition your way out of holes. You can't just

go buy another star if you're a big branded team.
So Austin Reeves the Detroit it's a great fit.

Detroit can offer him four years, one hundred and seventy

go look at Brunson and Brunson isn't as large and
is not as offensively gifted, but Brunson gives you over
seventy games a year. It's really the ethos of those

Villanova guys. They really play hard, not highly emotional. Uh
Josh Hart Bridges Brunson, very supportive of each other when
they have a bad night, a bad shot, very supportive.
And the dude plays seventy one games. So you know,
it's interesting if I if I said to you who
should Let's let's just say you and I are sitting down.

Who's all NBA? Now, Aunt, Wemby. There's a couple easy
all NBA guys, you know, Ant and Wemby. That's all NBA.
And then you start having to make choices here and
you say, well, Luca, okay, but but but again, where's

the defense? Is he available? I think there's two guys
all NBA nobody. We're gonna go with Wemby and we're
gonna go with Aunt. Then I think the arguments begin.
Everybody else has a hole and you can keep denying it.
But Luca is a defensive liability, and he's not available

very often, certainly not as often as you'd want. So
the other thing about Brunson as a small player who
has the ball in his hands. He's given you thirty
eight minutes a game in the playoffs, so he doesn't
miss starts. Remember, do you guys remember Game one? He
got hurt twice? He got hurt twice in Game one?

gonna play that That matters to me. Also, it should
be noted you say what, Jalen Bruns can't be on
that team. The Knicks are the best fourth quarter offense
since net ratings were established, and he has the on

I thought he was a very good player. I don't
think he's great, my bad, and he hasn't had a
great he hasn't had the most efficient series. He's going
up against the vawn Castle. But if you're talking about
fourth quarter availability minutes played. I also think one of
the testaments to Brunson, he's willing to go off ball.

He's like, listen, I'll move off ball. I don't know,
it's a I don't know, it's just it's just interesting
to look at who's really a star in New York, Eli,
Jeter and Brunson, and it's it's kind of no nonsense
available play through injuries, be really good in the biggest moment.

I mean that was always Eli. You're like, Eli's kind
of a C plus regular season quarterback. He was great
when it mattered. Brunson kind of a small defensive liability.
He's great in the fourth quarter. Derek Jeter, now he's
a lifetime three to zero two hitter. I think I
think what was always magical about Jeter is that he

just didn't dip. Most guys in the playoffs don't hit
like they do in the regular season. Jeter's career average
in Jeter's playoff average, if I recall or very very similar,
he was great and he was very very good in
the regular season. He was very very good, and he
was always at his best in the very biggot bats
in the very big moments. So and they all three,
by the way, Brunson, Eli and Jeter, they stayed out
of the spotlight. What about Jeter the gift baskets, give

me a break in New York page six, that's the
big hot take. He was single. I mean, they kind
of stayed out of the limelight. I mean, I can
give you a top five or six guys that came
into New York. Now, now I will say Reggie Jackson
was a star. He played for the Oakland A's Charlie Finley,
the crazy Owner, Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter. You know,

back in the seventies they end up in New York
and Reggie, Joe name it. There have been stars in
New York who soaked it up, leaned in. Joe Namath,
Reggie Jackson. That's pre social media, that's pre internet. That's
a different world. Now you get burned doing that stuff.
Look at this. Jeter hit my bad Jeter hit three

ten in the regular season, playoff average three eight. He
was always the same guy. So that's my rant on
New York, New York is that Brunson, Eli, Jeter. They're
not star for affection. They're not star for attention. There
is something to be said in New York. You know,
there's an old NFL GM you used to have a theory,
and his theory was in port cities, New York, New Orleans, Miami,

San Francisco, port cities. Character matters more in roster composition
and who you draft, because in port cities there's bigger nightlife.
So when you go to a you know, New York, Miami,
San Francisco, La, New Orleans, Port cities, things get a

little cra things go those sideways, and so character matters
more than that. Was always kind of the feeling when
Dave wantstat you know, and Jimmy Johnson one of the
Miami Dolphins you had, You had the draft guys that
love football, because if you didn't love football, you would
love Miami. There has a lot to do, all right,
