for listening to the herd podcast. Well, Mitchell Schwartz played

(00:22):
for nearly a decade in the NFL at a very
high level of four time, all pro, um, We've been
talking today about week one, maybe week two of the NFL.
Athletic quarterbacks have an advantage because building chemistry in an
O-line is hard.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's skill. It's work. It's timing. It's just putting the
time in.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Well, offensive linemen, especially the good ones and the older ones,
coaches aren't playing them in the preseason. So like yesterday,
if you go back to last Thursday, Matt Stafford, Jared Goff,
Aaron Rodgers, Cooper Rush, if you don't have a highly
athletic quarterback, it can get really ugly and stagnant for
an offense. I want to talk about that broach with

(01:06):
Mitchell Schwartz, who is now joining us live.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
The Chiefs tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Are hosting Denver. All right, so let's talk about that.
Go back to your career. Now, when you played in
your career, guys actually occasionally played in the preseason. Now
it's like, I mean, there's like caution tape around it. Nobody,
they don't let any of you guys who are good,
any bigs who are good play. So is there something
to athletic quarterbacks, Baltimore looked good. Buffalo looked good. Chicago

(01:34):
looked good. Hell Carolina looked good. Actually, despite losing Brock
Purdy and the Niners look good.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Is there anything to this Mitchell?

Speaker 3 (01:42):
I think there is something to it.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
And I think the extra layer is how good defenses
are now with disguising things. And, you know, we talked
about the too high shell and all that stuff, but
just in terms of like figuring out where protections are
coming from, we saw Drake may as athletic as he
is kind of running for his life against Seattle. They
hit a lot of blitzes. And so that's just like
almost a requirement for the position. Now it's getting so
difficult to, as you said, like have an offensive line

(02:05):
that can hold up because I mean, you used to go,
this is way before my day.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
So this isn't me.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
Talking about how tough we had it, but like back
in the actual day, you started off training camp. You
had four straight weeks, two days pads the whole time.
Like that is so many more reps than guys are
getting right now. You played all four preseason games. You know,
my offensive line coach in Kansas city, Andy Heck, he
was a first rounder. It was late eighties, early nineties.
he said he played every single snap for four straight

(02:32):
preseasons as a first rounder. Like that is unheard of
guys won't even have a career's worth of, you know,
snaps in the preseason now. So having that quarterback that can,
you know, escape linemen who aren't ready to block or
escape these tricky looks that we're facing. You're definitely seeing
the advantage on the field.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
All right.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Listen, if you look at the last two years, when,
when my homes comes in into this league, he's got
Fisher at one tackle.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
You're at the other.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
And boy, that is driving a Mercedes right downtown. Just
so nice. It's so comfortable. And then as the now
they have to move off of Joe Tooney and then
you you retire and all of a sudden Fisher's gone. Well,
in the last couple of years, Patrick's ad libbing has increased.
The structure's decreased. He's not as efficient. Then you've got

(03:20):
the Rishi Rice.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Is he available? Is he not?

Speaker 1 (03:23):
It's not the same offense anymore. Now we have Josh
Simmons at left tackle. Heard at Ohio State. Heard as
a rookie. With Denver's pass rush tonight. I mean, let's talk.
Undrafted rookie starting left tackle for Kansas City. Go to
your first start and you were a second round pick.
Go to your first NFL start. How hard is it?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
It's hard.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
And I went against Jason Babin actually in Andy Reed's
Eagles at the time.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
And yeah, it's, it's pretty difficult. It's not that easy.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
And to your point on preseason snaps, Benson was playing
with the ones that left tackle in the third preseason game.
They got six snaps. So we've only seen him play
on the left side for six naps. He was primarily
right guard and right tackle for the remainder of the
preseason until Josh got hurt. So we as a public
have basically not seen the guy play left tackle. Uh,

(04:14):
obviously the coaching staff feels comfortable with him playing there
and there's some familiarity from what they've seen, but the
matchup also isn't great because from what we saw from
Kilo Benson, he's a little bit slow off the snap count. Um,
isn't quite timing it the way you need to as
a tackle. And Denver's guys are the best in the
NFL at jumping the snap count and getting off and

(04:36):
bending the corner at the top of the pocket. So
in terms of stylistically, that's probably the thing I'm looking
forward to the most. Is he going to be on
the snap? Is he going to be getting off the
ball and not giving up these short corners? And I think,
you know, it's going to have to be a pretty
offensive line, especially offensive tackle friendly plan from Andy Reid.
So how he can mesh that with some of the
other changes we're expecting, the run game, the play action

(04:58):
under center, Patrick's knee injury.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
It's going to be an intriguing game tonight.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Mitchell, you still live in Kansas City. Are Chief fans,
are they realistic about the league now? I mean, we
all know Mahomes is great, but then he gets paid
a lot. And then there are limitations. You have to
let Trent McDuffie go. Oh, oh, now he has an
injury and he's coming off an injury. You know that
as a pro athlete. That's a psychology factor. Go to

(05:24):
your worst injury. You may not have had a real
serious one, but go to the first game, live bullets
after an injury.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
What's Patrick going through tonight?

Speaker 4 (05:35):
I mean, you're basically thinking of it every time it
gets hit or every time something happens around it. Obviously,
he's got a fantastic feel in the pocket, which could
be a detriment because now he's going to be feeling
things and feeling space around his legs that he's not
going to want to. I've wondered, half sarcastically, half seriously,
do you almost let him get tackled? up a little

(06:01):
bit because it is worrisome to think his first actual
action is going to be against this pass rush, which
they've got guys on both sides. I mean, I know
Cooper's out, but Benito is still, you know, a huge
threat off the edge. You've got Zach Allen on the interior,
some other guys across the road. So it's not just Hey,
we can avoid these one or two guys and I'll
make it work. It's like, no, the whole pass rush
is formidable. So I think getting over really that first

(06:24):
hit or two, obviously he's probably going to run and scramble.
Is he going to get down? Is he going to
kind of seek out contact just to feel it again?
Sometimes he likes, you know, throwing himself into the action,
but it will be very interesting. You know, will we
see this like mental sigh of relief that then he
just gets to cut it loose?

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I think we probably will.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
All right, so a hardball last night for the Giants.
It's amazing how the good coaches can harness the talent.
I mean, the Giants last year are a four-win team,
and they had a nice draft, but those are still
young guys. They come out last night, and you're like,
I mean, they got two edge rushers. They got a
star receiver. The quarterback looks good. Scataboo. They got a
great left tackle. Like, I mean, tell me your comp

(07:09):
in your world. It could be college. It could be pro.
on the value of the right coach. It could be
a position coach. It could be a head coach.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
But I mean.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
The Giants had most of this talent last year and
were just all over the map. They were so decisive
last night. They were so clear. They had such a
clear game plan. Those long extended drives, Mitchell, in week
one are hard. Eight play, eight play. Tell me a
situation in your career where coaching really does, it's just

(07:43):
greater than people surmise.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
I think from a position coach standpoint, a coach can
make or break guys' careers. I think coaching is that important.
Offensive line-wise, there's unfortunately a few bad coaches, and you
see you get pushed the wrong technique, you get pushed
the wrong mentality, mindset. It doesn't work with the player,
and he starts doubting himself.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
It's not working. He's not sure what to do.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
I think the most impressive thing from the Giants was
obviously the toughness, physicality. Offensive line-wise up front, you talked
about it, putting a ninth overall pick at right guard.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
They kicked out.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
Up front is what you want to see offensive line wise,
defensive line. We've been talking about that unit for forever.
I'll do Carter. It looks like an absolute animal on
a star, but the offensive identity to me was by
far the, the coolest part because you have Nagy from
Kansas city, kind of Andy Reed, more spread style. You've
got Greg Roman with, you know, a little more under center,

(08:40):
a little more play action. I think you got Brian
Callahan in there as well. So that's, it's like mixture
of three different guys, three different styles. And I, it
looked like a really well-run offense, you know, definitely more
under center, more of kind of the style we're trending
towards the, you know, Shanahan McVay, Ben Johnson style. And, um,
being able to pair that and you don't have Jackson
dart in the shotgun all the time. You don't have

(09:02):
them scrambling all the time, you know, still ran them
on a few design quarterback runs. And for the most part,
he protected himself a couple of times, let himself get
hit when he maybe should have slid. But I just
think the structure of the offense combined with the toughness
and the physicality we saw from both, both you know, fronts,
offense and defense, it's, it's hard not to be extremely
excited if you're a giants fan.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Okay, so Caleb Williams, Lamar, and Josh, especially week one,
you're going to take off, right? Tell me, because you
were protecting Mahomes for a year. As an offensive lineman,
when you have somebody like Caleb Williams or Lamar Jackson,
there's probably, you know, if you get beat, you got
a much greater shot to not get a sack stick

(09:45):
to your resume. Is it sometimes harder, though, when you have,
I mean, Caleb runs like, now he's so thin, he
runs like a wide receiver. I mean, Josh is like
a tight end with 4'5 speed, 4'4 speed. What is
it like to block for a great athlete at quarterback?

Speaker 4 (10:02):
It is awesome to your point, man, they make you
right so much more than they make you wrong. And
the biggest thing is that the defensive ends in particular
are not allowed to just rush the way they want to.
They still have to maintain some, you know, form of
integrity in terms of letting the quarterback break contain. And
so I was in a game, I think against Denver
and my home's got out of the pocket, started scrambling either,

(10:24):
you know, ran or completed a pass. And I'm hearing
probably a defensive line coach cuss out the guy I'm
blocking and you got to keep contained. You can't let
him out. So if my guy's getting yelled at that,
he's not rushing correctly. How's he going to give me
his best shot? Like he can't. And I also, back
in the day, I was trying to figure out how
much easier it was to block for certain quarterbacks, like

(10:45):
a drew breeze or a guy who's extremely stable in
the pocket.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
And you know where he's going to.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Be versus guys who are not stable in the pocket.
And the thing that I saw was I think defensive
ends were like two or three times more likely to
rush inside against the Drew Brees versus Lamar Jackson. Because
if you rush inside, you get washed down against Lamar.
He's going to take it outside. Caleb's going to take
it outside. Josh is going to take it outside. So again,
my job becomes easier because my guy can't, throw his

(11:12):
full package of pass rush moves against me. So I
love blocking from mobile quarterbacks. I, uh, you know, want
them to run as much as possible, obviously within reason.
And to your point about Caleb that I think he
has what two runs of over 20 miles an hour recently.
Like he is legitimately fast for an NFL ball carrier.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
It's pretty crazy.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Now that's really interesting.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
So if you've got a Lamar, you're going to get
the ins, you know, you're going to get the outside
rush with a speed guy.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
But if you have a drew.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
Breeze, they'll come inside and you knew that statistically, boy,
that's an advantage for you. So you didn't have to guess.
You kind of had a sense with an athletic quarterback,
a lot of times what you'd get before the first step.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Yeah, because they can rush up the field, but they
can only rush so high. You know, we've seen all
those times where a guy gets pushed up the top
of the pocket. And again, being a right tackle for
a right-handed quarterback, he's going to want to flush to
his right. So my guy can't just like take the
speed line up the field and gamble with.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Where that top of the pocket is.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
They have to have, you know, a little bit more
bull rush and a little bit more, you know, tempo
at the top of the pocket not just selling out
um because if they go inside or if they get
too high on their rush so they're forced into this
much smaller tighter window of you know where they it's
almost puts them in a phone booth in terms of
how they can rush me because the quarterback's going to

(12:26):
make them wrong where you know you talked about the
the guys who stand on the pocket like stafford and
some of these others rogers they don't have the mobility
anymore to break contain and to really make rushers wrong
in the way that a lamar or josh allen.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Can Mitchell Schwartz, decade in the league, four-time All-Pro, still
lives in Kansas City, younger brother of Jeff, former NFL
offensive lineman.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
As always, Mitchell, it's great to see you.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
You too. I'm glad football's back.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Yeah, so am I.

Speaker 5 (12:53):

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Uh, J Mac, it is interesting when you think about that,
when you have the advantage of Lamar or Caleb, you know,
I mean, the reality is a defensive end can't really
give you everything. Like he has got a monitor. You
can't go too high on the rush. And if you
have a smart offensive lineman knows that has kind of
a sense of where he's going to go.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
If you have a stationary quarterback.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
So that, that is the, and I, you know, I
noticed this a lot with the Rams against the Niners.
And I noticed it last year. I mean, last year,
the Rams lost to Atlanta and Carolina. is that the
advantage to athleticism for a quarterback is obvious, right? They
can take off, they can escape. But it also, it
does limit certain things. Like Brock Purdy in that game,

(14:15):
some of the running was scripted. You roll out much more.
And then a couple of times Brock just took off.
And when a quarterback takes off, he usually takes off
when he sees like the, like in man-to-man coverage, did
you notice this in man-to-man cut the culture in man-to-man once? Well, Lamar,
like if Carolina is in man-to-man, well, Caleb William, everybody

(14:37):
turns their back. So when, when a lot of these
quarterbacks do take off, it's not a four yard game.
It's a chunk game. It's a 20 yard gain. And
I mean, Caleb speed of the 13 plays this year,
where quarterbacks, what is it, 13 plays, where a player's
been over 20 miles an hour, Caleb has seven of them.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Like, that's wide receiver level speed for a quarterback.

Speaker 8 (15:03):
I don't know if he's faster than Lamar, but him,
Josh Allen, and Lamar all just move different in the
open field. Brock Purdy's like shifty, but I wouldn't say
he's fast, would you? Not like Caleb fast.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
No, but I mean, again.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
brock's a smart kid he runs when it's available because
remember he's in that system same with caleb caleb and
brock are in these brilliant offensive systems they don't need
to run much right like their their teams run the
niners and the bears can run the football so you
don't have to run much but when they do and
brock takes off he sees a hole like he sees

(15:38):
15 yard gains he doesn't seem to he's not taking
off for a two-yard game.

Speaker 8 (15:42):
Yeah like patrick mahomes that was his superpower remember that
He's coming off the ACL now. I don't know if
he's going to want to run. Did you see Daniel Jones,
by the way? He was not leaving the pocket at all,
not throwing the ball down the field.

Speaker 9 (15:53):
Quick stuff.

Speaker 10 (15:54):
Yep.

Speaker 9 (15:54):
Colts did not look good.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
J-Mac with the news.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
This is the Herdline News.

Speaker 8 (16:03):
Start with that Bengals-Bucks game. I love Tampa in this one,
and Baker Mayfield, Colin, had a brutal game.

Speaker 9 (16:09):
Three fumbles. One into the end zone.

Speaker 8 (16:12):
Here's the one that ended the game when they were
driving down three. Just poor pocket awareness. Bucky Irving had
a fumble. Baker gave up one. They're just loose with
the ball.

Speaker 9 (16:21):
I looked this up. He had three fumbles lost last season.
Baker had three fumbles lost yesterday.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
He tends to be, you know, he just signed a
big contract.

Speaker 6 (16:29):
Baker.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Some and i don't want to take a shot sometimes
he views himself as a greater athlete than he is
now he's a good athlete but relative to the top
seven or eight athletic quarterbacks in the league he's not
in that class and i thought two or three times
yesterday like he's you know he's you know give give cincinnati.

Speaker 8 (16:49):
Credit well that's what we're gonna get to so let's
let's hear baker talk about this new bangles defense and
i'll offer my.

Speaker 11 (16:56):
Thoughts they upgraded the personnel a lot um And just
they were winning on some twists and just consistent, relentless effort.
You know, like the last one, it's holding onto the
ball too long, but those guys are running around the edge.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
And Tristan probably thought I had let go of the
ball by then.

Speaker 11 (17:12):
And so it's relentless effort bringing in guys that have
high motors and obviously really talented guys.

Speaker 8 (17:18):
Yeah, so on the last play he's talking about, Tristan
Wirfs pushed Moffay, Boya Moffay, 10 yards behind the line
of scrimmage.

Speaker 9 (17:25):
Baker had over four seconds to throw. He's just holding
the ball.

Speaker 8 (17:28):
Is that the new Bengals guys being awesome? Or is
that Baker just had a bad game and his internal
clock was not up to stone?

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, I don't, I don't.

Speaker 9 (17:35):
Like, this is an eternity in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
I mean, just think about this.

Speaker 9 (17:38):
You've got to get rid of that.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
In the week one of the NFL, Arizona looked like
a top five team and the Rams were awful. So
there's some of this stuff is just, I'm not, I'm
not taking it that seriously. Like Drake may had, was
it three fourth quarter interceptions? He will not do that
again this year.

Speaker 9 (17:53):
Probably not.

Speaker 8 (17:54):
Uh, Seattle, Seattle, they got to give the Bengals shout out.
They were better defensively. Um, you know, Burrow had a
pick six.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Their hitting was, I mean, it was much more violent.
Like they were a physical defense.

Speaker 8 (18:04):
They could not get worse. They can only get better. Now,
here's some bad news for the Rams. Miles Garrett undergoing
knee surgeries, headed to the IR. This is the scary thing.
So McVay talked to reporters this morning, and it sounds
like he will miss at least four games. Now, I've
never had microscopic surgery.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
I don't know if you have.

Speaker 9 (18:25):
No. But I find it hard to believe.

Speaker 8 (18:26):
That Miles Garrett's going to be back in five weeks
and dominant. I don't know that he's going to be
Miles Garrett until, like, November, December, Colin.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
So the Browns got inexpensive Jared Burse, younger and healthier.

Speaker 8 (18:39):
I don't know if it was Garrett damaged goods. You know,
people in that game talked about how he just did
not look like.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
Oh, no, he... It was a nothing burger.

Speaker 9 (18:46):
It's unclear if he got hurt before.

Speaker 8 (18:48):
The travel mess... I have no idea what's going on here,
but this... You know, listen, when you crowd a.

Speaker 9 (18:54):
Team in August, everybody was crowding the Rams. Big favorites.
So you go out and get smoked by San Fran.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
I remember years and years ago.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
God, it could have been 20 years ago when the
Eagles went and bought a team. I think it was
pre-Howie Roseman. They bought a team years and years and
years ago.

Speaker 9 (19:09):
Like 2009-ish.

Speaker 10 (19:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
And everybody was like, oh, there's unbelievable. And they just
were a dud.

Speaker 8 (19:18):
So now you've got the Cam Scataboo and Jackson Dart
run game coming to SoFi.

Speaker 9 (19:23):
No Garrett. Aaron Donald making his debut.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
What's he going to be?

Speaker 1 (19:26):
I'm just telling you, the Giants, in my opinion, match
up pretty well. Yeah, it was the 2011 Giants super team.
I think the Giants pass rush with an immobile quarterback
is healthy. I also think Scadaboo is such a presence
for the Giants.

Speaker 9 (19:41):
He just invites contact. Now, again, let's say they slip
up against the Giants. 0-2 headed to Denver on a
short week.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 8 (19:50):
Yeah, it would be on a short week because they
play on Monday against the Giants. Then it's Eagles across
country and then Bills. Listen, I don't think they're going
to be 0-5. I think 1-4 is in play, Colin.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
I think it is, too.

Speaker 8 (20:02):
That's not going to put him out of the playoff
mix by any stretch, but Seattle's missing Drew Locke.

Speaker 9 (20:07):
Maybe Arizona runs well.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
Seattle's missing Darnold.

Speaker 9 (20:09):
Drew Locke is in for Darnold.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yeah, this is.

Speaker 8 (20:13):
Final story is the Chargers. I did not have the
two L.A. teams going 0-2 and the New York teams.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
And looking awful.

Speaker 9 (20:19):
Yeah, going 2-0.

Speaker 8 (20:21):
Here's O'Marion Hampton like, what are you even doing? That
is a brutal fumble. Jim Harbaugh just killed the team
for sloppiness. I mean, Herbert did not look good. I
know there's a big year for Herbert. Here he is like,
what are you doing?

Speaker 9 (20:34):
Throwing deep into double coverage? Nothing made sense. Colin, here's
Harbaugh on the Chargers sloppy play.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
Deep dive.

Speaker 10 (20:41):
Look at, look at all. I mean, as I said, there's,
there's things that get better. Definitely, uh, offensively, uh, defensively,
special teams, um, don't get to, uh, get it to
get it to that winning standard. And everybody's, everybody, everybody
knows that, you know, some just, yeah, uncharacteristic, uh, things happen,

(21:03):
give them credit for, for, uh, for making them happen. But, uh, yeah, we, uh,
I would call it sloppy at times, you know.

Speaker 9 (21:13):
Too sloppy.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
Yeah, it just, it was, it was the only game.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Like you could, when the Rams lost, you could say, well,
they flew in 18 hours day before. You could kind
of say they look foggy. This was the only game
I watched and I'm like, I don't get any of it. Like,
I don't get it at all. Harbaugh, by the way,
excellent week one coach. Harbaugh has been a very good
September coach.

Speaker 8 (21:38):
Good thing we didn't take the Chargers in Survivor last week, huh?
That would have been a big loss. I'm looking at
the Chargers depth chart defensively. Colin, I don't know half
these guys. This is a stunning performance from Arizona. Jacoby
Brissett looks solid. McBride was good. They got weapons on offense.
I don't know where the Chargers go from here. I mean,
they host the Raiders. They should win that game.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
You don't want to watch the entire Raider game. It's
no Brock Bowers. And they got some offensive pieces. They
were very reliant on Ashton Genting.

Speaker 9 (22:08):
How's this for Mike McDaniel? Game on the line, fourth quarter.

Speaker 8 (22:11):
They went blocked punt, interception, turnover on downs, turnover on downs.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
Not good. Not good. The block punt was brutal. Jay
Mack with the news.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
The Herdline News.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
One of the best games of the weekend. Michigan-Oklahoma was great.
Texas-Ohio State was great. There was good college football. SEC's
had a very good start to the season. Eight and
two out of conference, so that's good for them. I
was sitting there watching that Ohio State game at half,
and I'm like, Is Michigan and Ohio State both going
to beat SEC teams? Like this is a bad, bad

(22:51):
kind of marketing for the SEC. But Texas stormed back
and with a ton of pressure, Arch Manning played a really,
really good second half. So it is when Ohio State
just doesn't lose very much. So when they lose, it
is such a huge story. But years ago, they went
to Autzen Stadium and lost. And it was I remember
saying it's like it doesn't mean anything. I appreciate them,

(23:12):
you know. I appreciate the effort. I appreciate the stage.
And I kind of feel that with Texas. They're both
going to be fine. They'll probably meet again later in
the year. In L.A., it's the Herd.

Speaker 5 (23:22):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

Speaker 8 (23:27):
Thursday, it's a special baseball night in America on Fox
as Bryce Harper and the Phillies look to secure their
playoff position against Soto and the Mets or Bobby Witt Jr.
and the Royals take on the AL West leading Astros.
Check for the game in your area Thursday, 6.30 Eastern
on Fox.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Heard hierarchy tomorrow is going to be interesting. Like, you know,
I feel bad for Jacksonville. Nobody talks about Jacksonville, but
they were the hottest team in the league last year. Jacksonville,
the last eight weeks of the regular season. They lost
the home game in the playoffs to Buffalo, but they
were the hottest team in the league. And then you
watch them against Cleveland. We know Cleveland's not great. Are
they that bad? Are they 34-0 bad? Like, Jacksonville just

(24:08):
doesn't get talked about. But Liam Cohen, they lost Travis
Sazian and did not have a huge impact. Jacksonville's good.
I don't know what to do with them.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
I'll tell you this. I really liked.

Speaker 1 (24:19):
Steve Sarkeesian today, Texas beat Ohio state. I said earlier,
I'm watching Miami and Notre Dame and, you know, USC
and these schools just obliterating people.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
And that's fine.

Speaker 1 (24:31):
Um, I get it, especially if you play in a
great conference, but I do appreciate Ohio State scheduling Texas
and Texas last year scheduling Ohio State. I would not
have dropped Ohio State in the polls at all. I
think they controlled the football game in the first half.
I wouldn't drop them one spot. I would put Texas.

(24:51):
If you go Texas one, Ohio State two, I'd be
totally happy with that.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
Indiana three.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Here was Sark this morning defending Ohio State.

Speaker 7 (25:00):
They lose a scoring with 25 seconds to go in
the game that I hope if they end up being
a nine and three team, the committee can appreciate the
fact that they came to Austin, Texas in, in September
when it was a hundred degrees and played us in
that environment and played a heck of a game. And
so they should not be punished. Quite frankly, Ohio state

(25:22):
should be rewarded for playing in this game. This isn't
crying over spilled milk. I don't think we got rewarded
for going to Columbus last year in week one. Hopefully
this year they reward Ohio State for coming and playing
in this game with us.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
I totally agree on that.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
I don't think anything less of Ohio State. Folks, it's
half a yard from winning the game in Austin. It
was like 100 degrees or more on the field. And
they really, the game planned by Ohio State in the
first half was sensational. Arthur Smith, you know, Ohio State's
doing the NFL coordinator thing. Arthur Smith worked Will Muschamp

(25:59):
in the first half. Like, Muschamp, I didn't understand the
game plan against Jeremiah Smith. Now, they shut it down
at halftime. And I also will defend Ohio State here
because you can't ask.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
I mean, the.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
NFL doesn't have preseason or joint scrimmages. You're asking these
guys to play arguably one of the top three teams
in the country. They play each other. You're on the road.
It's 100 degrees. You play a perfect first half. Ohio
State's not going to play a perfect second half. That's
just not the way 19-year-old, 20-year-old kids... You don't get
a perfect day when somebody's 19 years old. Like, they

(26:31):
have more energy, they play the great first half, they
go on... You know, they're on the road, and Texas
is good. Now, Texas did... You know, the first half
was weird. They dropped the touchdown. It was a weird
interception that popped it into Ohio State's hands.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
You know, give the Buckeyes credit. Guy made the play.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
But, you know, Ohio State in the first half was
a cleaner team and a better team. And I think
with Arch Manning, there's going to be a lot of
quarterbacks that go in the first round.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
He will obviously go in the first round.

Speaker 1 (27:02):
I hope people remember with Arch Manning the unbelievable scrutiny
that he's under. Now, Eli Manning went to Ole Miss, and,
you know, I mean, he was, I think, the year
before he came out, he was like 7-5. Nobody was
paying attention to Eli Manning except NFL general managers.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
You didn't have.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
The kind of vile, intense criticism in the media. You
didn't have all the social media platforms. If you look
at what Arch Manning is going through between the Texas pressure,
the beat Ohio state pressure, the man, you know, the
Manning family pressure, you're the number one pick pressure. I
thought last year he got, it got it in his head.

(27:44):
And I thought in the first half, a little bit,
he sailed a couple, it kind of got into his head,
but I think Arch is pretty good.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
We'll see. Here was Sark on Arch's performance down the stretch.

Speaker 7 (27:57):
I thought he navigated that well, knowing it in the
back of his head. I remind him, hey, we're in
four down territory this drive until I tell you we're not.

Speaker 4 (28:05):
Does it ever cross your mind to want to punt
just so it doesn't get any worse?

Speaker 3 (28:10):
Did you think about that?

Speaker 7 (28:11):
No, that's how losers think.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
Winners win, baby. You got to go for it. Sark,
you know, a year ago.

Speaker 9 (28:20):
They didn't hire me to keep it close.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
They hired me to win.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
Yeah, I mean, I think when you're at Texas, it's
the state of Texas. It's kind of the alpha nature
of Texas. You want an aggressive offensive coach. Like, you're
not going to be. That's what Ohio State is complaining
about today. We went conservative. But, like, listen, you're on
the road. You outplay them. They have Arch Manning and Sark.
And the number one receiver is Ohio State. The number

(28:45):
two receiver may be Texas. Like, I get conservative play.

Speaker 9 (28:49):
Let me ask you, though.

Speaker 8 (28:50):
If that score had held up, Colin, 20-3 becomes 30-13,
Ohio State wins.

Speaker 9 (28:57):
I don't know if hot seat is.

Speaker 8 (28:58):
Accurate for Sark, but let's be real. That would have
been a bad loss. They were favored in this game.
They needed revenge.

Speaker 9 (29:06):
And Sark is known for blowing leads in some big
games over the last few years.

Speaker 1 (29:09):
No. I mean, it's just like when the Niners beat
the Rams. McVay's got the Super Bowls. He got a
Super Bowl title.

Speaker 9 (29:17):
Shanahan don't have one.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
And it's like, so that rivalry, the one thing Shanahan
has is I have a winning record against you. And
so Ohio State's got their natty. Ryan Day's got a natty.
They beat him last year. That's not giving anybody a pass.
But the game was, and also Michigan beat Oklahoma. You're thinking,
it's the secs too. I mean, are there two big

(29:39):
games today? They're going to lose both to the big 10.
Like it just felt like the world was coming down
on Texas.

Speaker 9 (29:44):
Ohio state kicker. Doesn't shank one with five minutes left.
They go up by nine.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
It's over.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (29:49):
Texas cannot win the game. So there, I mean, the
margins are very thin between these two.

Speaker 1 (29:54):
That's why I'm saying I'm not raising or dropping anybody.
If you want to put Texas one, I'd put Ohio.
I'd put Indiana to Ohio state three. I'm not dropping
them to six. Like the whole, the knock. Well, I
guess you're right. Miami hasn't beaten anybody yet.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (30:07):
I mean, again, I, I don't know why Georgia is
so high. Do you, is it just name brand?

Speaker 8 (30:15):
Like they don't have the players, Texas and Ohio state have,
I don't understand that one.

Speaker 9 (30:20):
LSU Ole Miss this weekend.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
What's funny is USC has looked unbelievable and nobody cares.

Speaker 9 (30:25):
Well, they know it's the same same old story every year.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
And they're playing Rutgers this week. So nobody's going to.

Speaker 9 (30:29):
Care on the road.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
Maybe they don't win by 30. Oregon's been a disaster.
They can't stop anybody.

Speaker 9 (30:38):
Yeah, I don't know what happened to Dan Lanning.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
Poor guy.

Speaker 9 (30:40):
He just looks like he's going through some stress.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
Well, let's be honest. So they replaced their OC. He
was Will Stein. He went to Kentucky and their DC
is And so how often do you nail both? I mean,
Jesse mentor leaves the chargers. So they got Mike McDonald,
the OC, they paid a lot of money for him. Like, Ooh,
that'll be great.

Speaker 9 (30:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
Well, now they lose Jesse mentor.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
And if you look chargers defense, they couldn't get Arizona
off the field.

Speaker 9 (31:06):
Who was it?

Speaker 8 (31:06):
Was it clack that came on here and said, this
is the best Oregon roster ever. Or somebody said it.
Maybe Jeff Schwartz.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (31:12):
Everybody was saying best roster, but my take is the
defensive coordinator right now. I mean, Boise State and Oklahoma State. Folks,
Oklahoma State is awful.

Speaker 9 (31:21):
Well, they got a good quarterback. He's really good.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
He can sling it. He's good. He might be a pro.

Speaker 9 (31:26):
He'll get a 75-yard run. I was like, this guy
can move? I think he's a pro.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Or I'm taking Denver tonight.

Speaker 5 (31:34):
Yes.

Speaker 9 (31:34):
We both have Denver.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Is it three?

Speaker 9 (31:37):
Three, two and a half, two. Lines on the move
from the pros.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
You know, it's hard to unsee all those great chief teams.
But the last two years... They're just not the same offense.
So for me, it's like, oh, Kansas City, Mahomes, Reed, Kelsey.
What if tonight Denver just lays them out?

Speaker 9 (31:56):
I don't know. Davis Webb, really? He's going to lay
out Spags' defense?
