that's rare that a high school team have that many
NBA guys on it. So you know who it was, Me,
Lamar and Eric Barkley. So I got drafted by Philly

in the first round. L got drafted by the Clippers lottery,
and Eric got drafted. EB got drafted by Portland in
the first round. So all three of us went first round.
Look at that. That's crazy. That was crazy. At the time,
we didn't know it. We just knew we were all nice.
But then to get drafted in the first round, that's
that was wild. We had one of the best high

radar kind of why I went to Hotshra. I kind
of gave a verbal commitment to the Hotsta like September
of my senior year, and then that's when I blew
up after after my after September, and then a lot

of big schools came after me, Saint John's senor Hall,
Georgia Tech. But I was made in my word and
I gave coach right my word that I was gonna
come to Hostra. So you know, I stuck with it.
Then I'm house. I'm happy with my decision. Definitely.

It definitely worked out for me.

Coach right, it is a Hall of Fame coach, so
definitely played for a great coach. So I'm happy with
my This is all my all my guys back then,
it's like, Yo, you're gonna wear like why, I'm like,
this is where I'm going. You know, they all going
to these high mages. And at the end of the day,
I had the best career out of everyone.

doing that from a young age, high school, high school,
even before high school.

When I was going into high school, I wanted to
go to Christi King because there was a basketball rich,
traditional high school, and people were like, you can't go
to You're five. Back then, going into high school, I
was five three, one thirty. So you can't go to
Christy King. That's a basketball school.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
You're five.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah, I say, now I'm going to Christy King. So
I went to the I went to the basketball camp
and then killed their basketball camp. And that's when they
started recruiting to go to christ the King. So I
got into Christy King. I played freshman basketball, and everybody
knows who knows basketball. If you're like exceptional, you don't

play JV basketball, you go straight up, you go straight
to Voss. As a sophomore, I didn't go. I didn't
go to the VOSS. I played JV basketball. They doubted
me again. I had a great he had a great
sophomore year playing Jami basketball. We wanted to. We won
the city championship. Next year went to varsity. They didn't
play much. I had to compete for playing time with

my with my best friend, every barker. At the time,
they didn't want to start both of us.

But then midway.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Through our senior year, Chris Kraft, the two guards got hurt,
so then our coach was forced to start both of us,
and that's when the team took off. That's when we
started killing everybody. We had that one and two punts.
We were going nobody, nobody could check us.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
I believe that I was.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I was still getting doubted, and then no one was saying.
Everybody was saying I can't play Division one basketball because
I was so small.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
I was like, all right, well I got put them wrong.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Then I started getting started getting like you know, mid
major recruitments, the housers, theonas the riders, but houses showing
the most love. And that's why I chose to go there.

And it was loyal to them.

You said, I'm moreal to the soil. I feel now
like you.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
You you played for Hostra like they gave you their word,
you gave you kept your word with them, and now
you're coaching.

One of the biggest reasons why I chose Hofstra, you know,
I wanted to be the big fish in small pond
because coming up, uh, I was even au. I was
on teams with Lamar and Malik Allen, so I was
never the guy got you, never the guy. I was always,

you know, playing third or fourth. So I wanted to
go somewhere where it was gonna be about me, you know,
selfishly that I wanted. That's why I could have went
the same I could have went to a bunch of schools.
I say, Nah, I wanted to be about me. I
want to be when the team wins, they talking about

speedy Classton. So that's so I went to Hofsta And
when I signed it, it.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Was a big thing. I was like, yeah, this is
what I wanted.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
It was on News twelve, you know, CBS ABC, There's like,
how did she get this kid?
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I was like this that made me.

Smile, got you, Yeah, and then the rest is history. Nah, definitely,

How did you keep the balance going into college because
you know, you see a lot of college kids make
mistakes as well as NBA stars make mistakes. How do
you keep the balance between everything like your head and
not getting gassed you on the news?
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Now you're young, you're a kids still.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Basically, I'm telling you honestly, it's because of my siblings.
They really kept me humble and really shot all that
down like this, no, that's not who you are, Like, no,
we know who you are, Like, you're not.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Going to the NBA.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
They laughed at sisters, you know, laughed at me when
I told him I was going to Nyby. But I'm
a big manifesto so like, if I say it, I
truly believe it's going to happen. But I even get
my sister, who at the time she was a doctor,
and she had bought a brand name.

She was a doctor, so the pressure was one.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
She had brought in my midway of my senior year.
She had bought a brand new Ford Explorer and I said, yo,
you know, I mean college. I'm like, I want to
drop that. Like I had a little beat up, coutless supreme.
I said, I said, yo, sis, let me try that.

You drive my car and when I make it to
the NBA, I buy you a new car. I don't
know how. I don't know how people leave me. I
don't know how I beat her, but yo, she let
me rock. I was big money, I was big man
on campus. You didn't tell me anything. You can't tell
me nothing.

Definitely just looked out.

It's definitely looked out. But I know what I'm saying.
I kept my promise. I bought her Lexus when I
got that's right, and it looked legend first came out.

I was so much looking forward to playing with him
and meeting him like that was. That was dope in itself.

deal with injury?

it's I was branding new to the league and for
me to tem my a c L in the preseason game,

and it was a long rehab process take you to
get back, like six months, six months, and I remember
it was around playoff time. I was kind of back,
but then I wanted to play. But LB who was
like Brown at the time, It's like, nah, we're not
gonna rush you back, like just take the take the

full year. I wanted to play got you because I
want to live on my drink.

You know, they kept my best interest at heart, so
set out the whole year. I went to some league
and started opening again. Definitely.

I watched the finals to this day and get goosebumps,
like this is crazy like I was playing in that definitely. Definitely,

the day to yourself. Whereas when you're coaching it's like
a real nine to five. You're in the office niney
at nine am and you don't leave to like six seven.
So like that was an adjustment for me. I'm like, honestly,
my first year, I was like, I don't know if
I could do this. I don't know if I can

do this, Like I like, I like my personal time, right,
So I was like I don't know about this, but
I stuck it. I was like, all right, well let
me just see. But I was honestly, I don't know.
I was like, I don't know. And in my first
recruiting trip, this was what really blew my mind. So
they sent me to DC to watch a couple of practices.
So I left home like seven am, got to d

C driving, not flying.

Joe to d C five hours, went to a couple
of practices, bounced around d C, got back on the
road at like five o'clock in the afternoon to come
back home, got home about ten pm, and then had
to go back into the office the next day. And

dumb tired. I'm like, if this is what it's gonna be,
I don't know. If I could do this, like I am,
I am cooked from doing all that and one day
dropping the DC and back and one day what's what's
the guy ten?

I know a lot of the scouts, a lot of
the gms, and they all asked me before the season, who,
in my confidence should they be looking at. So of course,
if I have a kid that's worthy of it, I'm
not going to just throw anybody out there. But if

I went to the I went to the basketball camp
and then killed their basketball camp. And that's when they
started recruiting to go to christ the King. So I
got into Christy King. I played freshman basketball, and everybody

play JV basketball, you go straight up, you go straight
to Voss. As a sophomore, I didn't go. I didn't
go to the VOSS. I played JV basketball. They doubted
me again. I had a great he had a great
sophomore year playing Jami basketball. We wanted to. We won
the city championship. Next year went to varsity. They didn't
play much. I had to compete for playing time with

my with my best friend, every barker. At the time,
they didn't want to start both of us.

But then midway.

Through our senior year, Chris Kraft, the two guards got hurt,
so then our coach was forced to start both of us,
and that's when the team took off. That's when we
started killing everybody. We had that one and two punts.
We were going nobody, nobody could check us.

I was still getting doubted, and then no one was saying.
Everybody was saying I can't play Division one basketball because
I was so small.

major recruitments, the housers, theonas the riders, but houses showing
the most love. And that's why I chose to go there.

go somewhere where it was gonna be about me, you know,
selfishly that I wanted. That's why I could have went

when I signed it, it.

Basically, I'm telling you honestly, it's because of my siblings.
They really kept me humble and really shot all that

They laughed at sisters, you know, laughed at me when
I told him I was going to Nyby. But I'm

you know, from high school to college to the NBA.

them they want to walk the path that I've already walked.
So during the recruitment process, I always tell my guys like, listen,
I got the blueprint. Like all these kids they want
to make it to the NBA. And obviously all of
them are not going to make it to the NBA.

But if you come in and you put the time in,
you put the work in, it could happen. It could
definitely happen. I'm not going to say it can happen
because I mean, that's what people told you, That's what
people told me. So I'm not going to ever say
that to a kid like listen, you come in here,
you put the work in. With my connections, it can happen.

I know a lot of the scouts, a lot of
the gms, and they all asked me before the season, who,
in my confidence should they be looking at. So of course,
if I have a kid that's worthy of it, I'm
not going to just throw anybody out there. But if
I have a kid that's worthy of it. Definitely put
them in a position she didn't get get known. That's dope.

and so I try to create a good culture.
