Richard Sherman and Mitchell react to the San Francisco 49ers’ dominant 27–7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. The 49ers answered major questions in Week 1. Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw returned and changed San Francisco’s defense, while the secondary—including Renardo Green, Deommodore Lenoir, Jack Jones, Ji’Ayir Brown, and Siga—made life difficult for Matthew Stafford and the Rams’ loaded offense. Brock Purdy looked sharp, protected the football, used his legs when needed, and operated Kyle Shanahan’s offense confidently. Richard breaks down Purdy’s improved footwork, the offensive line's zero sacks, Mike Evans’ impact as a third-down weapon, Deebo Samuel’s return, and rookie RB Kaelon Black’s emergence behind Christian McCaffrey. Sherman explains why the Rams’ star-studded roster shouldn’t have been crowned before Week 1—and why travel, jet lag, scheme fit, and execution mattered in a lopsided Niners win.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. And Mitchell, what
a game. All you new fans, make sure you hit
that like and subscribe button, please. The 49ers went down
under and manhandled the Rams. Mitchell, the defense, big question
mark all offseason, answered a lot of questions this game.

(00:27):
I mean, they looked like an entirely different unit. And,
of course, they did because you got Fred Warner back.
You got Dre Greenlaw back. Mitchell, that's the entire attitude
and demeanor of this team. You're talking about it just changed.
You can see people turning down hits out there when
you see Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw heat-seeking missiles. Seagull

(00:49):
was out there. 3-6 was out there heat-seeking missile. Jair
Brown putting hits on guys all day. De Amador, Lenore,
Renardo Green played a really great game, had the interception
early on, and then even Jack Jones. Jack Jones almost
had him two books. Jack Jones ran a few routes
for receivers, looked really great out there. The defensive line,

(01:11):
big question mark. What were they going to look like?
Adigizua looked like the same guy he was in Dallas.
Very impactful. You're not necessarily seeing it on the stat sheet.
You're not seeing all these sacks, but But Stafford was
under duress the entire game. There were so many new guys,
young guys stepping up, making an impact. I know Romello Hyde,

(01:33):
everybody was wondering how he was impacting. He's a young guy.
He's going to figure it out. Grayson Halton did a
great job. C.J. West, a lot of guys played a
lot of great football. But Fred Warner, so great to
see him back out there. He looked like he never left.
But it's just an entire different defense when Dre Greenlaw

(01:53):
and Fred come together. I mean, it's like Thanos when
he has all the stones, Mitchell, in the glove. It's
just a different feel. It's a different defense. Especially, I mean, obviously,
Nicholas John Bolster, there was a lot of question marks.
Is he healthy? People saw a video. Was he limping?
Was he not limping? I don't think he is. He

(02:14):
was throwing people out the club in this game. Again,
a couple TFLs in the game. Did he have some,
you know, everybody has a little rust. But on the
opposite side, Mitchell, I was worried about the interior offensive
line for the San Francisco 49ers. And what a game
they played. What a game they played. Was it perfect? No.

(02:36):
But Kyle Shanahan drew it up and kept the defense
off balance with the screen game, with the run game.
With quick passes, Brock Purdy getting the ball out of
his hands. When they did get some penetration, when they
did get some pressure, he used his legs. He had
30 yards rushing, and he looked incredible. Mitchell, he talked about,
you heard it throughout the broadcast, about his footwork and

(02:58):
how he worked on it all offseason and just getting
back to how he was his rookie year and just
being sharper, sharper than he was last year. And boy,
did he look sharp. And when he was in trouble
and it was third down, Everybody missing. We knew you
would miss third and Juwan. You know, we ain't going
to forget you, third and Juwan. But Mike Evans, when

(03:18):
you have a true number one, when you have a
big dog, big dogs eat first, Mitchell. And when you
need one, he's going to be there to give you one.
And he did that. And Depot Samuel, he came home.
He came home. San Francisco's favorite son has returned. He
put the 1-9 on. Mitchell got back in a little shape.
He just looks more grateful. He looks happy to be here.

(03:41):
He looks like he saw what the other side looked like,
and he felt better at home. And Mitchell, oh, he just,
when somebody's out there playing, and you can see the joy,
and you can see the appreciation, you can see he
looks re-energized, and I think he's going to have a
great season. Mitchell, he just looks like the guy that

(04:02):
that he was when he first got there. And I
love to see that he, he, he was in the backfield.
He had a 12 yard run. He's so, he's so
willing to help. He's so being so such a selfless
player right now. He's kick returning Mitchell. He had a
big time kick return in this game to get the
energy back in San Francisco. Well, it never really left

(04:22):
San Francisco side. I think the fans, the Rams thought
they could avoid a home game, but they didn't. Um,
He had six catches for 48 yards, a touchdown receiving. Yeah,
I mean, Brock Purdy and Deebo Samuel connection is going
to continue to grow. It's going to continue to be great.

(04:42):
It just looks right. Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw back, Mike
Evans now in the fold. Those guys look like they
had unfinished business. I think Dre Greenlaw... Like he's already
said it a few times. He was like, man, in Denver,
I just was a different guy. Just what didn't feel right.
I was watching 49ers game. My kids were talking about
the 49ers. And now you're home. Debo, he was out

(05:04):
there trying to make it work. But then you came
home and they just look right. They went back to
their old numbers. And then special teams, the special teams,
you got to kick her. 56 yarder. I know he
missed one tonight. I still don't really know what happened.
You know, it may have been that Australian air just
might've pushed it a little bit, but Eddie De Niro

(05:25):
hit some big kicks in this game. I know he
missed one. I know it wasn't perfect, but he's still money.
And I think he's going to have another great season.
I think this, this is a stepping stone for him.
It's 49ers team is going to be a tough out
for everybody. I still feel like the Seattle Seahawks are
the class of the National Football League. But boy, if

(05:49):
the offensive line, they kept Brock Purdy clean today. Gave
up no sacks. They gave up 27 sacks in 2025.
They gave up no sacks today. They barely gave up
a few pressures. If they can play like this all
season and keep Brock Purdy clean and let him dissect
Mitchell like he went to med school, boy, I tell you.

(06:10):
But the real story of this game, Mitchell, was the
third down defense and the third down offense. I know
Kyle Shanahan, when he gets in that meeting on Monday,
that's what he's going to talk about. He's going to
talk about how did we do on third down. Mitchell,
they were seven for 12. How did we do stopping
the Rams on third down? Held them two of nine.
The MVP of the league, Mitchell. One of the best

(06:31):
offenses in the National Football League with the best play call.
One of the best play callers in the National Football League.
Two of nine. One of three in the red zone. Woo,
it only had 15 first downs in the game. Mitchell,
you play defense like that, you ain't gonna have Raheem
Morris for long. Football is back, folks, and you need

(06:55):
to change the way you invest in the NFL this season.
It's time to finally ditch your old sportsbook apps because
Polymarket is here.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Polymarket is a legal prediction market now available in all
50 states. And those old sportsbooks, they're a relic of
the past. On Polymarket, you can trade on all things NFL,
from the Sunday slate, to who wins rookie of the year,
to who performs the halftime show.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
We hear from listeners all the time about the sportsbook's
driving them crazy, trying to cash out live. They can
block you as often as they want, holding your money hostage.
Polymarket gives you the freedom to cash out instantly.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
If the momentum swings, you sell off of it in
real time. You are in control. No one can lock
you out, and you can also buy in anytime. So
when the market dips, like if a team starts slow
and drops to, say, 40%, that's not a loss. That's
when you buy in. At Polymarket, you can buy cheap

(07:57):
and ride the momentum back up.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Polymarket is so confident that you won't go back to
your old ways that they're issuing a challenge. They're giving
you a $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Sign
up right now with the promo code Sherman.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
That's polymarket.us and use promo code Sherman to get a
$ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Great to see George Kittle back out there. Mike Evans, uh,
Unfortunate news about Deshaun Stripling. We're going to wait to
hear that news. But Kalon Black looked great. A rookie
went out there, made an impact. CMC, Demarcus Robinson. What
a touchdown. What a touchdown to open this game. They
made the Rams, who were the paper champions, who were

(08:40):
supposed to... They were in the broadcast talking about how
undefeated season. Almost everybody picked them to win this game
like it wasn't going to be close. And I told people,
I don't know. I don't have the Rams winning this game.
I said it before. I said it early in the season.
I don't. Even once you got Aaron Donald said he's
coming back and you got Miles Garrett. I said, I

(09:02):
don't got them winning this game because Kyle Shanahan has
Sean McVay's number and Rams fans say, oh, you're just
a hater. You're just a hater. Do I look like
a hater now? Who looks right? I'm right. Ball knower.
I know ball. You don't travel to Australia the day
before the game and think you're just going to beat

(09:23):
a team. Not in the National Football League. That's crazy
to do. That's insane to do. And now, get that
factor in? No question about it. These are humans. These
are humans. You were on a plane 29 hours ago,
28 hours ago. You were on a 15-hour flight. By

(09:43):
the time they body adjust, Mitchell, it's going to be
Thursday of next week. Like, I don't understand that decision-making,
but it was a test. It was an experiment. Everybody
wondered how it would go, but rational people kind of
knew how it would go. We knew this. team that
got there the day before would probably have some jet
lag even if they won like you would see some

(10:05):
moments in the game where they were sluggish there was
moments in this game where where uh miles garrett looked
sluggish where he didn't look like he had his legs
under him it was so many things i mean matthew
stafford was a little off in this game he wasn't
as sharp as he usually is And when you're playing
an offense with the 2025 receiving touchdown leader and Devontae Adams,

(10:28):
the 2025 most valuable player in the National Football League,
you expect them to put up more than seven points
against the defense with question marks. Give Raheem Morris a
ton of credit for what he was able to do
because that was outstanding.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Richard, I was letting you fire away, man. I can
tell you're excited. Huge one for the Niners. You did
have some question marks coming into this game. You already
touched on the offensive line. You marked that interior offensive
line as a concern. Obviously, they showed up today with
no sacks. But the other side of the ball, you
had questions outside of Diamador Lenore. What was the rest

(11:06):
of that secondary, specifically that cornerback, going to look like?
And they impressed. Obviously, that front seven was getting after
Matthew Stafford, making him very uncomfortable. But what did you
think of Renardo Green's game and Jack Jones' game and
some of those other complimentary pieces next to Diamador Lenore?

Speaker 1 (11:26):
I thought they played outstanding football. They met the moment.
They dominated the moment. And they played in the absence
of fear. I thought Renardo's interception, it looked like it
was covered too. I got to see the tape. But
he sunk. He was deep. That was literally, there was
a play last year against the Seattle Seahawks where where
they were in Seattle and they threw a seven cut

(11:47):
over Renardo Green. And I remember Kyle Shanahan brought him
to pull them out of the game and like really
cursed him. And then to see this season, to start
the season for him to sink right where he's supposed
to be, to get the depth that he's supposed to get,
make an interception, first game of the season, playing extremely confident.
Jack Jones plays I've never seen anybody play like Jack Jones.

(12:08):
I mean, there are some great corners. And he played,
you know, it's feast or famine. But when he's on
and he's dialed in and he's right, boy, he's tough
to complete passes on. And he's fearless. Like a corner
with nothing to lose that always feels like he's playing
on house money is fun to watch. It's fun. It's
fun to watch him. He's running routes for guys. Obviously,

(12:30):
he studied and prepared for this game. Diamador Lenore was
really blanket coverage all night. They gave him an illegal
contact penalty that I thought was trivial. I thought that
Bernardo Green penalty. The refs are still... It's first game
for them, too. But I thought this secondary play great.

(12:51):
I thought Siegel, who was second in tackles in this game,
was literally making impact plays. And it's not always on
the stat sheets. It's not always... big, big plays, but
he was making his presence felt every time, regardless of
what the score was in the game. When he came down,
he hit and he delivered weight and authority behind it

(13:13):
every single time. And Jair Brown did too. And it
was cool to watch. Sports brings neighborhoods together. And one
of my game day rituals is hitting Grand Central Bakery
in Seattle before kickoff. They use square and it just
makes everything feel more put together. Quick checkout, easy receipts,
even loyalty points sometimes. The place can be packed, but

(13:36):
paying is seamless.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Square is a platform behind the scenes of so many
businesses you already love.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
It's not just a point of sale.

and keeping everything moving.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
There's no question about that, and you already touched on it.
The addition of Mike Evans to this offense totally changes
things for him. It gives Brock Purdy a reliable, bona
fide third down option to give the ball to, and
he was targeting them all game, especially early on in
that game. It's amazing to see what one player does
to an offense, but the 49ers and their faithful have

(14:44):
got to be extremely excited to have him on their team.
And then behind Christian McCaffrey, they take a flyer on
Kalen Black out of Indiana. Here's a kid that had
a very successful campaign with the Indiana Hoosiers last year,
helped take them to the championship game and ultimately win
the national championship. He comes in behind Christian McCaffrey, his backup,

(15:07):
and a lot of question marks lie there. What happens
to CMC? He had 460 touches last year. I Black
out-touched McCaffrey this game, 14-10 in carries, and he did
a great job. 14-65, to have a reliable secondary piece
in that backfield is huge for the 49ers. But let's

(15:29):
talk a little bit about the Rams. I mean, there
was so much hype and hoopla about this team. Miles Garrett,
Aaron O'Donnell, obviously McDuffie, Jalen Watson, the list goes on.
All these changes they made defensively, and Kyle Shanahan picks
them apart. As you said, Kyle's got their number. There
is no question about that. But how does this temper

(15:52):
the expectations of this Rams team beyond week one? Do
you think they are still cream of the crop at
the NFC? Or are you lowering your expectations with this
team after what you saw today?

Speaker 1 (16:05):
I didn't think they were cream of the crop of
the NFC or the NFL in the first place. Mitchell,
that's why they weren't number one in my power rankings.
And I got a lot of criticism about it. I
got a lot of criticism from people saying, why don't
you have the Rams? They're the best team in football history.
Never going to be beat. They scored seven points and
gave up 27. Stop it. This is the National Football League.

(16:28):
You can't. It's not just easy to put. Hey, we're
going to add three, four all-pro players and it's just
going to work out. This isn't a sandwich, Mitchell. You
can't just put great ingredients together and think it's going
to taste good. It doesn't always taste right, Mitchell. It
doesn't always come out right. By the time November, December,
January come around, then they may come together like they're

(16:50):
supposed to. But again, Watson and McDuffie played in an
entirely different scheme in Kansas City. What Spaggs runs isn't
what Chris Shula runs. And it's different. Like, your opportunities
are different. The pass rush is different. The responsibilities are different.
They're not used to kind of sitting back and feeling

(17:10):
it out and trying to pick their spots. Like, I'm
sure when they talked about Mike Evans, covering Mike Evans
in a red zone, they were like, hey, we got Watson.
He's going to, oh, he's tall. He's lanky. Great man-to-man corner. Like,
it's going to be perfect. But then you get to
game day and everything that you thought changes. Mike Evans

(17:34):
takes it off his scalp in the end zone and flexes. Like,
you got to put it on the grass. Like, you
got to see it all come together. And maybe it does.
But I hate when people anoint teams before you play
in any sport. Like, Just like the Dodgers in baseball.
They're like, oh, man, they got every picture and everything.

(17:57):
Just give them the rings. Like, yeah, when they win it,
you know, because the other guys are professionals. The other
guys are motivated. And the San Francisco 49ers are coached
by Kyle Shanahan. And Kyle Shanahan is a fantastic coach.
And if a few plays here and there, he would
be one of the best coaches all the time because
he would have a couple of Super Bowl wins. But unfortunately,

(18:20):
things didn't pan out that way. but he's still a
hell of a coach in the National Football League, and
he's a tough out. And if he has his best
players healthy, if he has his quarterback healthy, his receiving options,
and he's losing them by the second, he's going to
be tough to beat. And they drove right down the
field on the first drive of the game, had no
problem driving it right down the field. They only got

(18:41):
a field goal, but they were at like the two-yard line.
They kicked the field goal from the two. So they
didn't feel intimidated. They didn't feel scared. I don't think
they felt like when they got the corners and made
all these moves. I don't think the 49ers, San Francisco
49ers felt like they got that much better. And when
people say it, it sounds crazy because McDuffie is a

(19:02):
bonafide all pro. It's legitimate. Watson is a really good corner.
Like Miles Garrett is Miles Garrett, but this is the
National Football League. They're human beings. Everybody's been beat. Everybody's
been blocked. Miles Garrett is a little banged up right now.
Still got to get in the game shape, but didn't
get a QB pressure. Didn't get a QB hit. So again,

(19:23):
you have to remember, this game is played on grass. Now,
will the Rams be formidable? Will the Rams be a contender?
No question about it. They're too good of a team.
They're led by the MVP of the league. They're going
to be fine. But when everybody on the broadcast is
sitting there like, man, they may go undefeated this season.

(19:44):
That undefeated season didn't last a week. Settle down.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Richard, I should have done this earlier, but when a
team dominates like the 49ers did today, it calls for
an old-fashioned hat switch. And 49er faithful, wear it with
pride tonight. Much respect. Richard, before we go, I got
one final question to ask you. You're awfully excited tonight.
Are you more excited about this 49ers win tonight or

(20:14):
the fact that the Richard Sherman podcast officially has eclipsed
250,000 subscribers on YouTube?

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Mitchell, I'm excited the Niners won. I'm excited the Seahawks won.
The Richard Sherman podcast is 2-0, and we got 250K subscribers,

that like. and subscribe button so we can continue to
grow because this is going to be our best season ever.
It's starting off exactly how we wanted it to. Seahawks win.

(20:47):
Niners win. Couldn't be better. As always, we appreciate you
joining us. You could be anywhere in the world, but
you're here with me and my guy, Mitchell, and we
appreciate that. All love. We're going to see you next time.
