Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and what a
game for the New York football Giants. John Harbaugh's debut
with the Giants, and they go out there and control
the game from start to finish. They did a fantastic job.
Jackson Dart was 23 of 29, very efficient, 230 yards,
three touchdowns, also ran it 11 times for 54 yards.
Cam Scadable, 18 carries, 81 yards, and a touchdown. Just fantastic. Slow, methodical,
(00:31):
grinded-out football. Isaiah Likely was the star of the night,
was unguardable, had eight targets, eight catches, 78 yards, two touchdowns,
dominant performance. Then Malik Neighbors, who wasn't sure if he
was going to play this game, six receptions, 69 yards.
And the story of the game, I don't, it was just,
(00:52):
it never seemed like they weren't in control of this game.
A great plan in the first half, a great plan
in the second half, only allowed the Dallas Cowboys to
possess the ball twice in the second half. The entire
second half, they possessed the ball twice. Now, they scored
both times they possessed it, but I tell you what,
(01:12):
you can't score a third time if you don't get
it a third time. And that sounds great in principle.
That probably sounds great in planning, but in execution, it's
rare that you ever in the National Football League hear
about a team getting two possessions in a half. And
John Harbaugh has to be ecstatic about how his team responded.
(01:33):
You heard about things all training camp. They're running more
after practice. They're doing things. They're buying in to what
John Harbaugh was preaching. And if you've ever played for
a Harbaugh, you know they are as old school as
old school gets. And the things that football was built
on fundamentally is what they believe. And They believe that
(01:57):
more is more. So there's no substitute for more work,
for more conditioning, for tackling in practice, for playing football.
And I know things have evolved with technology and analytics
and everybody wanting to be more health conscious, but that's
just not how these guys think. And it's worked well
for this New York football Giants football team. Now on
(02:19):
the flip side, the damn Dallas Cowboys. Boy, I'll tell
you what. if I every time I want to try
to give you credit every time I want to try
to believe in the Dallas Cowboys y'all let me down
and y'all call me a Dallas hater Dallas hater because
you know what I hate I hate believing in somebody
that don't believe in themselves and the Dallas Cowboys who
(02:42):
have revamped their team revamped their defense did all these
things drafted Caleb Downs um They got Overshawn. They got
Quinn and Williams. They got Kenny Clark. They got all
these guys that show so much promise. Malik Hooker, Deron Bland.
They got guys who can play the game, and then
they don't play the game well anymore. And then Cam
(03:02):
Scadable was running the football all over you. And then
on the offensive side, you have all these weapons. Dak
Prescott has consistently been one of the best quarterbacks in
the league, regardless of what you feel about him. He
didn't play as great to date, but usually plays at
a high level. C.D. Lamp. has played at a high level.
George Pickens, when C.D. Lamb was out, George Pickens has
(03:23):
played at a high level, playing under the franchise tag,
very motivated. Nothing. C.D. Lamb, five catches, 44 yards, a touchdown.
George Pickens, three receptions on six targets, 28 yards. That's, like,
not enough. Not enough. And, again, they only have the
ball twice in the second half, so you can't put
(03:43):
all the blame on them.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Because.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
their defense has got to get stops. And you can
put the blame just about everywhere. You can throw a
little blame at everybody because the defense couldn't get stopped.
There was bonehead penalties. There were things that you just
can't do against a well-coached and disciplined team, which you
never really expect to say about the Giants, at least
as of late. But when it's a John Harbaugh coached team,
(04:08):
those are the things that you expect. And he brought
some guys over from Baltimore that are going to help
him win. And man, This was as good of a
game as I've seen from a John Harbaugh coached team.
This is a great opener. Jackson Dart is the guy
they expected him to be. He showed, had a great game. This,
(04:32):
I hate to say it, but this Giants team might
be for real. We gonna see. I mean, they got
a game next week against the LA Rams that will
tell us a lot. Like, are they legitimate? Now, the
LA Rams are for sure legitimate. I know Everybody's going
to argue, man, what happened in Australia? Australia, we'll call
that a separate beast. But if they somehow find a
(04:53):
way to upset the LA Rams, it's a conversation now.
Much different conversation, that's for sure. Another great weekend of football.
Make sure you like and subscribe to this podcast so
we can keep delivering incredible content. So first, let's start
(05:17):
off with the news of the day. Myles Garrett undergoes
arthroscopic surgery on his ailing knee. He will miss a month,
and the Rams have a tough schedule this month. They
got the Giants, which is a game they could win,
but the Giants are looking very lively on this Sunday night.
The Broncos, very tough team, who was in the AFC
(05:38):
Championship last year. The Eagles, a team that's always tough.
another AFC team that is always tough. So what, what
is their record going to be after this slew of games?
Who knows? They're a great team. They were in an
NFC championship. They have shown perseverance. I don't think they're
going to have another showing like they did in Australia.
(05:58):
I feel like that was jet lag. That was rigid residual,
you know, uh, effects of, of traveling the day before
a game when you got to be on a plane,
15 hours, et cetera, et cetera. But, I don't think
they'll show like that again. I think they can beat
the Giants. I think it's going to be a dogfight
with the Broncos, but I think McVay is going to
have them ready. The Eagles, an NFC opponent that could
(06:21):
go either way. They did not look great today. They
looked okay against the Commanders, a team that we, you know,
I think the league has low expectations for this year.
They don't have a ton on the offensive side of
the ball. Defensively, they had some guys step up today.
But I think the Bills is going to be a
tough game to win. Bill showed some weakness on defense,
(06:43):
but Josh Allen is still Josh Allen, Mitchell, and he
looked great today.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Richard, another big news of the week. Sam Darnold obviously
gets injured week one, that opening Wednesday night football that
we saw. The big win over the Patriots. He goes
out with all things a glute injury. A lot of
folks thought it was a hip, maybe a knee. It
turns out to be a glute. He's going to be
out this week. We saw Drew Locke, and this was
a guy out of Missouri, right, gets a starting opportunity
(07:10):
with the Broncos, ultimately doesn't keep that job, ends up
with the Seahawks. He's a guy that you could argue
deserves another opportunity. He's going to get that opportunity here
with the Seahawks. Richard, you predicted that the Seahawks team
would start 4-0, and here they are without Sam Darnold.
Now Drew Locke is under center for the foreseeable future.
(07:31):
Do you see this team continuing on that 4-0 trajectory
that you called early in the season?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah, yeah. I think Brian Fleury is going to tailor
a game plan that is specifically based on Drew Locke's
skill set. He has a little bit more mobility. I
think they're going to move him out of the pocket
a little bit more. Obviously, Sam was fine. He has
mobility of his own, but I think you know, it's
(07:59):
not necessarily true that the, the thing Sam does well,
Drew does well. So when you're, when you're configuring a
game plan for Drew Locke, it's going to be a
lot different, but when you go into the week, you
expect Sam Darnold to play. So I think you're going
to see them probably lean on the run game a
little bit more. Maybe the screen game is going to
be a little more prevalent. JSN is obviously going to
be a huge factor in that. Um, I think they're
(08:22):
going to just keep it safe for them. They're going
to lean on that defense to make some plays, to
create some turnovers, to give them some field position. They're
going to lean on their special teams to make plays,
to give them a lead, to give them some cushion
in this game. But I still think they can go 4-0.
I think it's going to be tough. The Chargers did
not look great today against the Arizona Cardinals. And in
(08:44):
the same breath, the Arizona Cardinals and Jacoby Brissett looked
really good. So you've got to give them credit for
what they were able to put on tape This week,
they looked good on both sides of the ball. Mike
LaFleur is doing a great job there, putting together an
offense that's going to be dangerous. And Jacoby Brissett was
holding out, wanting some more money, and you see why.
(09:05):
He out-dueled Justin Herbert today. And we talked about during
our preview how I expected Justin Herbert to have a
really breakout season this season with Mike McDaniel and everything
that he brings and the creative aspect that he has
on this offense. But you did not see it in
this game.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Richard, let's talk about some of these games this Sunday.
The first Sunday of week one. Here we are, guys.
The NFL is officially kicked off. And we were talking
about it in the pregame. Richard, you were all about
this Bills-Texans game. You had your eyes on the defense.
We thought it was going to be an offensive battle.
(09:42):
One of the best offenses in the league, the Buffalo Bills.
against one of the most stout defenses in the league,
the Houston Texans. Richard, it turned out to be an
absolute offensive game, 36-31 the final. This Houston Texan team,
which held its ground, hat on their defense, looked not
(10:03):
the part. Josh Allen picks them apart for 334 in
the air, two touchdowns, another six for 23, another two
touchdowns rushing. What gives here? Are the Houston Texans, are
you worried about their defense, or does this just go
to show you how good Josh Allen is? in this
Buffalo Bills' offenses? I think it's a little bit of both.
(10:24):
Josh Allen deserves a ton of credit. He played brilliantly
in this game early.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
He used his legs when he needed to use them.
He used his arm. He honestly threw an arm punt
right before the game-sealing touchdown to Palmer. He threw it
up to Kamari Lassiter, and Kamari Lassiter had a chance
in it. to end this game, to get the Texans
a win with a minute 40 to go. I think
(10:50):
they could have pretty much ran out the clock and
ended that game with the lead, and he dropped the
interception right in his hands. And I think that's going
to be one that haunts the Houston Texans all season
long because they had the game won. I mean, you know,
anything can happen, especially when you've got Josh Allen on
the other side. But they would have been in position,
in control, with the ball, and a chance to run
(11:12):
out the clock. They had been running the ball well
all game. David Montgomery, your guy, had three touchdowns on
the day. He had been very effective, but obviously that's
not how it went. You got to give Josh Allen
a ton of credit. Dalton Kincaid was unstoppable in this game.
He looked like the best tight end in the league
at times in this game, and he was doing it
against safeties. He did it against two really good safeties.
(11:34):
He attacked Blankenship during this game. I saw him catch
a pass against Kamari Lassiter. I mean, everybody... throughout this game,
tried to cover him. They tried to cover him with linebackers, safeties, corners,
and he continued to have success. He had five catches
for 130 yards with a 40-yarder in the game, and
I think he's the difference maker this year. If they're
going to be able to utilize him in that way
(11:57):
while also getting Josh Palmer involved, getting Khalil Shakur involved,
getting DJ Moore involved, who had five catches for 100
yards and a touchdown, he looked really good. They looked amazing. Great.
And Joe Brady, you could see his fingerprints all over
this game. They were aggressive when they needed to be aggressive.
But the game could have went either way. You got
(12:17):
to give them credit because this defense is a great defense.
There are a lot of all pros in that secondary,
and they did not look like it in this game.
The way Josh Allen handled them, the way he was
throwing the ball around the yard, regardless of who was
covering who. And you got to respect that and give
him a ton of credit in this Buffalo offense, in
the Buffalo defense. They had three sacks. Took the ball
(12:38):
away twice. They're going to be a formidable outfit. I
look forward to seeing them against your Detroit Lions in
Buffalo on Thursday night next week.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
No question about it. And you said it too, DJ Moore,
another guy that they added this offseason. This Buffalo team
last year did not have a DJ Moore. They lose
Stephon Diggs last year. This year they go out and
get a pseudo number one wide receiver and DJ Moore.
And you see this offense just clicking away. Give Josh
(13:07):
Allen weapons. He can do a lot of dangerous things
in the air, on the ground, you name it. This
Buffalo Bills team could be a force. Richard, on the
other side of the ball for the Houston Texans, a
lot of eyeballs on C.J. Stroud this year. In contract
negotiations with this team, he delivers a solid outing. Throws
for 274 yards, two touchdowns, ultimately in a loss. What
(13:31):
are you thinking of C.J. Stroud in his game right
now as he leads his Texas team now and in
the future?
Speaker 1 (13:40):
If I'm them, I feel like this game is encouraging.
It's encouraging. I thought he executed well down the stretch
when they needed points. He was able to drive them
down the field. I thought David Montgomery was fantastic. I
thought Woody Marks got in there and gave them the
spark they needed. Nico Collins looked great. Jalen Noel had
his plays. Dalton Schultz had a few plays here and there.
(14:02):
But I thought the concern was the defense. And this
is no shot at Buffalo, but you expected Daniil Hunter
and Will Anderson to have a bigger impact in this game,
and they did a great job of negating them. They
held them to only two sacks on the day, no
takeaways in the game, and they had shots. They had shots.
Like I said, Kamari Lassiter had a shot to end
(14:25):
this game, potentially end this game with an interception right
before the touchdown, and that's football. Mitchell, when you mess up,
Miss Ops, you know what the football gods say? It's
touchdown on the next play. Oh, you gave them another chance?
You gave them life? They went and attacked Kamari Lassiter
with Josh Palmer on the next play on a post route,
(14:49):
and it was a touchdown because you cannot do it.
You cannot give a team life again. After right then
and there, you have to be a big-time playmaker, and
I love Kamari Lassiter. I love the way he plays.
I love his style. I think he's one of the
best corners in the league, but you got to have
that play because of all the things I just said.
You're a big-time playmaker. And if he has that play,
(15:09):
I think there's a great chance Houston wins this game.
And the result's different. So, obviously, he'll learn from it
and continue to grow. But this is a humbling game
for that Houston defense that was so vaunted last year.
And I'm sure Domingo Ryan is going to be in there.
And it's going to be a tough film day for them.
And it's going to have to motivate them and have
(15:30):
to give them energy, especially with the Cincinnati Bengals coming
into town next week.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
No question about it. Listen, Houston, they proved today they
can hang with the big boys. I mean, this is
a team I think is going to be in it
till the end. I expect them to be a playoff team.
This defense, I think it might have been a little
bit of a wake-up call for them. We'll see how
they respond next week.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Football is back, folks, and you need to change the
way you invest in the NFL this season. It's time
to finally ditch your old sportsbook apps. because Polymarket is here.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Polymarket is a legal prediction market now available in all
50 states. And those old sports books, they're a relic
of the past. On Polymarket, you can trade on all
things NFL. From the Sunday slate. to who wins rookie
of the year, to who performs the halftime show.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
We hear from listeners all the time about the sportsbooks
driving them crazy, trying to cash out live. They can
block you as often as they want, holding your money hostage.
Holly Market gives you the freedom to cash out instantly.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
If the momentum swings, you sell off of it in
real time. You are in control. No one can lock
you out, and you can also buy in any time.
So when the market dips, like if a team starts
slow and drops to, say, 40%, that's not a loss.
That's when you buy in. At Polymarket, you can buy
cheap and ride the momentum back up.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Polymarket is so confident that you won't go back to
your old ways that they're issuing a challenge. They're giving
you a $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Sign
up right now with the promo code Sherman.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
That's polymarket.us and use promo code Sherman to get a
$ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Richard, defense did
not seem to exist in week one. Let's move forward
to the Chicago Bears game where they put 59 points
on the board at Carolina against the Panthers. Final score
(17:28):
in this one, 59-37. I don't know about NFL history,
but I got to believe this is up there in
terms of most points scored in a game in a
week one matchup in the NFL. Richard, Ben Johnson comes
to Chicago last year. His calling card is offense. And
we saw a lot of it today. 59 points put
(17:50):
up on the board. What are your thoughts on the
Chicago Bears team, specifically with their offense? Because Caleb Williams,
still so young, right? I mean, 21 of 29, 269 yards,
two touchdowns, gets two more on the ground. I mean,
this team, you know, as they grow and progress through
the season, so impressive. Carolina Panthers, let's not forget, they
(18:12):
were in the playoffs last year. What are your thoughts
on this game, Richard, as the Chicago Bears, 59 points
on the board in week one?
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Well, they got me reconsidering my NFC North pick because,
I mean... It's like, Mitchell, I love your Detroit Lions.
I know. I love that Honolulu Blue, but goodness gracious,
these guys put up 59 points in the National Football
League against a playoff opponent, against a team that was
in the playoffs last year, a team that won their division.
(18:44):
And that's impressive. Ben Johnson has to be over the
moon because there wasn't anything crazy out of the ordinary.
They ran the ball incredibly well. DeAndre Swift. 18 carries
for 124 yards, three touchdowns, brilliant game from him. Then
you look up and Kyle Menungai has a 100-yard game
off 10 carries and a touchdown. And so they were
(19:07):
drawing and dialing it up at a very high tilt. Now,
if you're on the other side and you're the Carolina
Panthers and you're Ejoro Evero, who was an up-and-coming darling,
defensive darling in this league and getting head coaching interviews,
You kind of got to go back to the drawing
board and figure out what you're doing wrong because they
ran the ball up and down the field, and then
(19:29):
you have Caleb Williams, and then Caleb Williams is out
there executing. Great catch out there. Roma Dunes, they only
had two catches for 52 yards, but one of those
catches was outstanding. Took an old-school Moss right off the helmet, Mitchell.
It's brilliant play. Luther Burton, five for 63. Not crazy,
flashy numbers, but Caleb Williams looked in command this entire game.
(19:52):
Looked comfortable. And there was conversations before Ben Johnson got
there that it takes a second for a quarterback to
really understand and start to play at a high level
within the Ben Johnson scheme. And we saw it. with
our guy Jared Goff. You know, when Jared Goff started
to understand and started to feel he had the best
(20:13):
year of his career, you know, the Lions went, I think, 14-3.
And it was phenomenal. No, no, no. Did they go 14-3?
I think they went to the NFC Championship that year
and lost to the San Francisco 49ers, unfortunately. But he
started to understand. He started to play at a high level.
(20:35):
He started to get it, and that's exactly what's happening
for Caleb Williams. The game's starting to come easier for him.
For them to put up 59 points is incredible. Now, obviously,
on the other flip side of that, 37 points for
the Carolina Panthers, that's winning football. I'm sure Dave Canales
is over the moon about how Bryce Young played. He
threw for 361, three touchdowns, and only one interception. He
(20:58):
ran another touchdown in on the ground. He himself had
four touchdowns on the day to match Caleb Williams' four touchdowns.
So I'm sure that's really encouraging for the Carolina Panthers.
But for that Chicago Bears defense, what's going on? What's
going on? There's a lot of question marks for a
defense that played well. Sure, they had two sacks. They
took the ball away three times. You definitely get patted
(21:20):
on the back for that. But at the end of
the day, you gave up 37 points. And on the
Carolina side, Idro Evero, like, Mitch, I don't know how
you come back from that. Giving up 59 points.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
I don't know how you do. I mean, Richard, this game,
in a nutshell, at home, too, for Carolina, giving up
59 points in week one. You had all month to
prepare for this game.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
All training camp. This is what you're preparing for. You've
studied all offseason knowing your opponent since the schedule came out,
knowing what you're going to study, knowing you're playing Ben Johnson.
You're not playing some new up-and-coming coordinator who you don't
really understand. This guy's been in the league.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Is this the biggest surprise of week one, this score
on the board here? Because 59 points, this does not
happen often in the NFL, Richard. I mean, how big
of a deal is this for the Chicago Bears?
Speaker 1 (22:13):
It's huge. It's huge. It's a great game and a
marvelous performance by the Chicago Bears offense. I am really
surprised by the score. I am really surprised. I'm not
surprised Chicago won. I thought Chicago could beat Carolina, but
For them to score 59 points, for them to beat
them by 22 points after giving up 37. A team
(22:36):
scores 37 points, they expect to win. Most games in
the National Football League, you score 37. Your quarterback throws
for 300 in three touchdowns, four total touchdowns. You're thinking
that's a win. And for you to lose that game
by 20, it's... These are some strange things. There were
some strange things happening today. And we're going to get
to that Green Bay Packers game because that one was
(22:59):
another strange one where you look at the stat sheet,
you look at the box score, and you're like, wait
a minute. They lost that game? And not only did
they lose, they lost by 17? You look at this
and you're like, quarterback played well. The receivers played well.
They didn't run it that great. But you're not expecting
them to get, you know, beat by 22 points. No question.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
And before we leave this game, under the radar signing
by the Chicago Bears, they pluck Kalief Raymond from the
Detroit Lions. This guy was a Swiss Army Knight for
the Detroit Lions. He goes to Chicago, eight receptions on
nine targets for 84 yards, an impressive showing in his
first outing with the Chicago Bears. Ben Johnson clearly knows
what he's doing in Chicago. More to come there. We'll
(23:43):
see how this progresses. Let's stick in the NFC North. Richard,
a game I was at in Detroit, Ford Field, For
any fans there, they got a kick-ass new lion head
in the corner of the end zone that lights up
every time they score. Detroit's doing things right, Richard. But
this game, up 21-0, it looks like the Lions just
(24:05):
went on cruise control. And New Orleans got back in
the game. Tyler Schuch, holy cow, puts up over 400
passing yards. The Detroit Lions could not stop them with
any effort in the second half. And Detroit narrowly escapes
in overtime thanks to a failed two-point conversion attempt by
New Orleans. Detroit comes out victorious 31-30. Richard, I leave
(24:29):
this game with a lot of question marks. First being,
is Drew Petzing the right guy? This team looked very
conservative offensively. We called it coming into this week. They're
going to run a lot of two tight end sets,
and that they did.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
But Richard.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
At the expense of what? At the expense of airing
the ball out. I mean, we saw Amon Ross St. Brown,
10 receptions. Guess how many yards, Richard? 67 yards. That
is not enough. 10 receptions, 67 yards. If Detroit wants
to get back to their winning ways and their dominant ways,
(25:09):
they got to start airing the ball out. That's just
my two cents on this game in a nutshell from
being there. But Richard, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
about the Detroit Lions in week one after narrowly escaping
the New Orleans Saints?
Speaker 1 (25:22):
I would say when you're concerned about your defense, you
try to possess the ball. And I can understand to
some level what the plan was. The plan was, hey,
let's get a lot of plays. We'll dink and dunk.
We'll control the game. We'll control the clock. Our defense
won't be out there very long. And they'll figure it
(25:44):
out as they go. They'll get better. Aiden Hutchinson had
two sacks in the game. He did well. Derek Barnes
looked good. Jameer Gibbs looked really good. 29 carries. I mean,
it had a full workload today. Full workload. 29 carries,
156 yards, five receptions, 30 yards. That's where the concern
has to be. It's almost like Christian McCaffrey last year
(26:05):
for the San Francisco 49ers. Like, after a while... you
start to get worn down and you start to wonder like, who's,
who's behind Jameer Gibbs? Who else do you have when
he has games years where he's splitting it with David Montgomery?
And it's, it's, you know, you're like, Hey, he gets
in there. He's explosive. He does his thing, but then
he gets a break. He doesn't have to get beat up.
(26:26):
He can survive the season, but how can he survive
30 carries a game? Can he, can he, can his
body survive this? We will see. Maybe it'll be fine, but,
What we've learned over the history of the game is
30 carries on the back, it brings that shelf life
down considerably. And I think that's what their plan was,
(26:46):
just be conservative, keep the defense off the field. But
I told you this before we got on the show,
and I've said it before, I do not like defenses
that live in man coverage in a predictable way. And
I thought that was the difference in this game. When
Detroit was out there and Tyler Shaw and kevin moore
(27:08):
and that offense knows they're going to be a man
coverage especially in the second half especially in the red
zone it's not hard to pick that off that defense
apart because it's so player dependent unless you got really
phenomenal incredible man-to-man coverage corners which even if you do
it's still tough but you don't you don't have those
(27:29):
corners and so A great coordinator is mixing up zones,
is disguising it, is bringing different pressures, figuring out ways
to manipulate the offensive line. And there were some of
that involved, but with man coverage behind it. And Tyler
Shaw lit them up to the tune of 410 yards
and three touchdowns. Sure, there were two interceptions in there,
(27:51):
and big plays made. But Chris Alave, 10 for 182. Mitchell,
that's the kind of game you wanted from Amah Ross St.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Brown.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
That's the kind of game you wanted an aggressive passing attack.
Chris Alave had a game. Devin Veeley, seven receptions for
69 yards. They had guys who could have a lot
of success against man-to-man coverage because it can be schemed
in a way that there's nothing the DB can do.
(28:20):
There's nothing the corner can do if you just keep
lining up in it again and again and again. there's
going to have to be a change there, Mitchell. And
if it's not changed by next week, Buffalo is going
to make it even harder.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
You're dead on. I mean, this is a team last year,
you know, they were not very good against the run.
Today they were. And they were dominating in this first
half up 21 to nothing early in the second half.
And the Saints couldn't do anything. And all of a
sudden they just said, screw it. We're just going to
throw the ball every freaking time. And that they did.
And to your point, Chris Alave was everywhere, all over
(28:54):
the field. Tyler Schalk, gained a lot of my respect
this week. I think the Saints are true contenders in
this division, Richard. That's a takeaway I have from this game.
I think Detroit did not play their A game whatsoever,
but I think the Saints are going to be better
than people anticipate. I got the Saints winning the NFC
South after watching them in person today. Call it a
hot take, but that's just how I feel.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Football is back. And if you're getting ready for the season,
pull up to your local Lids. The exclusive 47 NFL
collection is available only in store at Lids. And this
gear is the gear you're going to need if you're
going all in all season.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
No doubt about it. We're talking NFL graphic tees. The
iconic 47 hitch headrests. silhouette. Richard, you like this, man?
I love this. The Detroit Lions 47 hitch headwear I
got on. And fan gear that looks good on game day.
Monday morning and every day in between.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
And listen, I know a little something about being all in.
The Legion of Boom energy. It was not casual. We
didn't walk on the field hoping people noticed us. We
set the tone. We brought the energy. We made sure
everybody knew exactly who they were dealing with.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
That's how you should rep your team, Richard. Confidence. No apologies.
Whether you're hosting the crew, watching the family, tailgating before
the game, or sitting across from somebody wearing the wrong colors,
get to your local lids and rep your squad the
right way.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Football isn't just a Sunday thing. It's a rivalry. It's tradition.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
It's pride.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
It's who you are all week long. So don't wait
until kickoff to get ready. Pull up to Lids and
go all in, all season, only in store at Lids.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Richard, let's talk a little bit more about the NFC South.
Tampa Bay goes on the road against Cincinnati, and this
is a team I challenged you on. During our AFC breakdown.
I said the Cincinnati Bengals are going to surprise some folks.
I got them going all the way to the AFC
championship game. Pending a healthy Joe Burrow. And here we
(31:07):
were today. Cincinnati came out hot. They took control of
this game. And they ultimately won. 33-27. Richard, talk to
me about the Cincinnati Bengals. A lot of folks in
Cincinnati liked my take. They did not like your take,
but let's hear what you got to say about the Bengals.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Mitchell, you called it. You said they're improved and they
could win the AFC North. From the history, for the
history of the Cincinnati Bengals, at least over the last
two decades, defense has been an issue. And I know
they're like, oh man, we've invested so much in it.
We're so much different now. You don't get it. I
hear you, but I got to see it. And for
(31:49):
the first half of this game, We saw it. We
saw it. After giving up a field goal in the
first drive, the next three possessions forced a fumble. Baker Mayfield,
they forced a fumble on Baker Mayfield. They forced a
fumble on Bucky Irving. Then their offense scored, and they
(32:14):
forced another fumble on Baker Mayfield. They sacked him. They
harassed him all game long. They were phenomenal in this game.
early on Mitchell, early on. And that's a key point
because in the second half, it did not look the same.
It did not look the same. And they didn't give
up a ton of points. They didn't give up a
ton of points because Joe Burrow threw a, threw a
(32:34):
pick six. So we won't credit them to that. They
gave up 20 points in this game, which is solid,
which is solid in national football league. But again, when
it got down to, to, to crunch time, they were
able to stand up. The offense was able to score points,
big win for them. Uh, In Tampa Bay, a tough
place to go out there, especially early because it's hot,
(32:56):
it's humid, and get a win. So the Cincinnati Bengals
deserve a ton of credit. I mean, that defense was aggressive,
harassing Baker Mayfield all game. They sacked him four times.
They hit him a whole bunch of other times. So
there is something there. There is something to this defense.
(33:17):
And they got a tough game coming up next week
against the Houston Texans, a very tough defense. That's going
to put a lot of pressure on there. But so
does Todd Bowles. And that D-line, everything you heard in
the preseason was, oh, man, this D-line is going to
get after everybody. This D-line is going to handle people,
going to put pressure on. And Joe Burrow was only
(33:38):
sacked once in this game. It wasn't his best game.
It wasn't his worst game. He was effective. Due for 254,
one touchdown, had to pick six. We talked about earlier.
But Solid game for him. Really good game for the defense.
Really good game for the Cincinnati Bengals to start the
season off with a win. They've had seasons where they've
(33:58):
struggled all the way until November and then got hot late.
If they can start off with some wins, it may
be what you said, Mitchell. You may have been a prophet.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Richard, that train's still open, my friend. Feel free to
hop on board. I'm telling you, this Cincinnati Bengals team,
they're my dark horse this year. I got them winning
the AFC North, and I got them making a run
in this playoffs. Joe Burrow and co. Get it done
week one. Another huge test next week against the 0-1
Houston Texans. Hungry for a win. We shall see, my friend.
(34:32):
Another wild game. I mean, statistics just did not match
up in this game. The Minnesota Vikings take care of
business at home against division rival Green Bay and the Packers, 39-22.
Not what we expected. Carson Wentz leads the charge. Kyler
(34:52):
Murray goes out with a concussion. Carson Wentz comes in,
has a solid game. Three touchdown passes, 133 yards passing.
We saw the Justin Jefferson of old. He's got to
be loving this start to the season. 92 yards and
two touchdowns. Richard, the Minnesota Vikings get it done at home. Although,
(35:13):
statistically speaking, the Green Bay Packers look like they should
have won this game. What are your thoughts, my friend?
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Insanity, Mitchell. Insanity. The Green Bay Packers were in full
control of this game, doing whatever they wanted. Jordan Love,
freaking all the sidearm passes, under pressure, under duress, getting
it done, seeming like they had started to figure out
Brian Flores. Now, mind you, he struggled consistently, historically, against
(35:41):
Brian Flores and Coach defenses, he usually has a few turnovers, two,
three interceptions, and they somehow, they win the game. Sometimes
they don't win the game. Sometimes, you know, it goes
back and forth, but usually he struggles against Brian Flores
and the exotic things they put out there. But this game,
it seemed like Jordan Love has finally matured and started
(36:02):
to figure this defense out. But not so fast, my friend,
because the second half adjustments by Brian Flores in this
defense are, were phenomenal. They started to get home running
much different pressures, flipping things, flipping a script. Jordan Love
had no room to operate, had no time in the pocket,
(36:23):
no time to process anything. They caused multiple turnovers in
the fourth quarter. They scored, I think it might have
been 29 unanswered, something crazy like that. It was at
least 22 in the fourth, 22 points in the fourth quarter.
just a dominant performance. And then you look at the
box score. You look at the numbers. It was 419
(36:45):
yards overall for the Packers to, I think, 200. Let
me make sure I get it right.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
239, Richard.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
239 for the Minnesota Vikings. And somehow the Minnesota Vikings
outpossessed the Green Bay Packers in this game. And you're like,
It just doesn't make sense. If you look at this
box score and the quarterback throws for 387 and two touchdowns,
and you say they lost by 17, and the other
quarterback was 12 for 19, 133, but he had three touchdowns.
(37:19):
Carson Wentz deserves a ton of credit to come in
there in a difficult situation, in a difficult environment, and
just get it done. Get the ball to his playmaker,
one of the best players in the league, and Justin Jefferson,
who had eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
Just make it happen. And that's all he did. That's
what veterans do. And I bet people are wondering, where's J.J. McCarthy?
(37:43):
I thought he was. Now, listen, but we're not going
to go there, Minnesota. I'm going to give y'all your
just due because Carson Wentz came in there and did
the job, got the job done. They won this game,
scored 39 points in the game. Held Green Bay to
(38:05):
22 points. I think it was only three points after
the half. Let me double check because I don't want
to misspeak. Yeah, they held the Green Bay Packers to
only a field goal after the half. It's fantastic adjustments.
Brian Flores should be a head coach somewhere. Like there
are too many guys getting opportunities now. without the resume
(38:25):
of things he's done. And I know he struggled in Miami,
but who hasn't struggled in Miami?
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Where does, where does he, we talk about Brian Flores
all the time. This guy is a mastermind defensively. Where
does he stack on your hierarchy of defensive masterminds in
this NFL? I mean, is he D coordinator one in the,
in the league at this point, or what is your
thought process when it comes to block Brian Flores?
Speaker 1 (38:50):
It's, it's, It's tough because we can't just forget what
Spags has done over the last couple years, and we
can't forget what Vic Fangio has done because we're feeling
hot in the cot right now. There are some guys
that have called some really fantastic defenses. Mike McDonald out there,
he's a head coach, so we're not going to call
him a coordinator for all intents and purposes. D'Amico Ryan
(39:13):
and what they're doing in Houston last year, they played
some great defense. Vance Joseph out there in Denver. They
played some great defense, so we're not going to get
hot in the cotton and start forgetting about all the
things we know. But he's definitely up there. I mean,
he's top two, top three, and he should be a
head coach. And I know people are going to go
back to his stint in Miami, but you're not in
(39:35):
control of all the circumstances when you're a head coach
like that. Hey, they drafted Tua Tungavailoa. He tried to
make it happen. Ryan Fitzpatrick was actually having a really
great year. But the ownership group and the front office
forced him to play Tua Tungavailoa before he's ready. in
a season where they were actually playing great football, the defense.
I want to say one game, Tua's first start against
(39:56):
the Rams, he had like 70 yards, and everybody else scored.
They had like two pick sixes, a punt return, touchdown.
I don't even know if they had an offensive touchdown,
and they won by 20. And so I thought Brian
Flores got scapegoated, and that's why the whole lawsuit and
all that went in there. But I think that lawsuit
and everything and the collusion– is why he isn't getting
(40:19):
a head coaching job now, but he deserves one. He's
one of the most creative minds defensively, one of the
most aggressive, and I think if he got another opportunity,
it would go well. Maybe Mike McDonald and the success
he's having in Seattle will lead to more teams saying, hey,
maybe a defensive coach can get it done, and maybe
that's the difference we need when you run into some
(40:40):
of these offensive geniuses. Like maybe sometimes you need a
guy who's just going to, create a defense that's willing
to hit everybody in the mouth. And that's what the
Minnesota Vikings did in the second half.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
You love to see it as a Minnesota Viking fan.
Impressive week one for the Vikings coming off victorious against
division foe Green Bay. Richard, shocker in L.A. The Arizona Cardinals,
the lowly Arizona Cardinals, who, I mean, you're not the
only one that wrote them off, Richard.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
I wrote them off.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
I think everyone in national media wrote them off. This
year's Arizona Cardinals team was not going to be very good.
Not so fast. Jacoby Brissett, 277 yards passing, a touchdown.
Your boy, Kendrick Bourne, eight catches for 75 yards. I
don't know what happened to Marvin Harrison Jr., apparently the
top five pick. I don't know what's going on. One
(41:37):
catch for 33 yards. They still get the win. Michael Wilson.
Stanford Cardinal, go tree. Five receptions, 56 yards. They come
out with a road victory against the L.A. Chargers, a
team that has been hyped up. Mike McDaniel goes to
the Chargers. Here's a team with his joggers and his
(41:58):
sunglasses and whatever else he's bringing to L.A. Everyone thought
they were going to be the greatest show on turf.
Not so fast. Arizona takes care of the L.A. Chargers. Richard,
we might have a four-man race in this NFC West.
I mean, you wrote them off. Do we have something
to worry about here in the NFC West with the
(42:19):
Arizona Cardinals? I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
I was on McAfee's show, and they started to talk about,
you know, a four-team, you know, if Arizona could pull
it together, four teams in one division making the playoffs.
I was like, oh, that's crazy. And Arizona just picked
top five in the draft, like, Don't have a new coach.
A lot of things to make up. But give him
a ton of credit. Jacoby Brissett. Jacoby Brissett, like, never
(42:46):
gets enough credit. Like, always been solid to good. Like, and.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
You know who he reminds me of, Richard, before you continue?
Your co-worker.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Fitzmagic. I mean, I think he's... 100%.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
He reminds me of Fitzmagic in that way that he
just inserts himself and immediately makes the team competitive. I mean,
he's unheralded. That's just how I feel. Pause.
Speaker 1 (43:11):
What does he do? Okay, thank you. Thank you. Yikes.
But Jacoby Brissett, 27-37 for a 277, one touchdown, 103
passer rating. Trey McBride, of course, considered one of the
best tight ends in the National Football League, gets 13 targets.
Nine catches for 95 yards to one touchdown. And our
(43:34):
guy KB. KB said, hey, y'all got all these high
draft picks. Y'all got all these guys making all this money.
Marvin Harrison, Michael Wilson, you just got the bag. I
hear you. But you keep throwing it to KB and
we gonna see. And we are gonna see. They get
a win, a big win in LA against a Chargers
team that we expected to be competitive. I expected to
(43:57):
be competitive. And I thought that the combination of Mike
McDaniel and Justin Herbert would thrive. And maybe it will. Maybe,
you know, after a while, I think Justin is going
to have to get used to this scheme and throwing
in tight windows and anticipation and all the things that
(44:17):
you got to do that Brock Purdy and Matthew Stafford
and the guys that play in this West Coast scheme,
that Kyle Shanahan, Mike McVay, or Mike McVay, Mike McDaniel,
Sean McVay, all these guys run where it's condensed. They
bring in everything in and they're creating really cool scenarios,
but the windows are tight. And sometimes as a quarterback,
(44:39):
you want to, you want to have a bigger window.
You want to feel like it's a safer throw. And
some of these girls aren't safe. Some, some of these
girls you're throwing to a spot and you're just trusting
that the receiver is going to be there. Um, But
Mike LaFleur has these guys playing with confidence, and sometimes
when you don't have a shot, when the expectations are low,
and you got a guy who most people think is
(45:02):
a bridge quarterback in Jacoby Brissett, and Jacoby Brissett said
this offseason, pay me. Pay me, please. Like, you guys
are going to get high-level play from me. I'm going
to come in here and win you games. I came
in here and played at a decently high level last
year when there wasn't a ton of talent in the building,
and there's no reward because people expect them to, to
go draft somebody else and go draft his replacement. But
(45:24):
Jacoby Brissett is saying, not so fast, my friend. You
aren't going to just draft my replacement. I'm going to
make sure that draft pick isn't as high as you
need it to be to replace me. And I can
respect that. They got a tough game against the Seattle
Seahawks next week. But, again, Drew Locke is in there.
It's a lot different than Sam Darnold being in there.
(45:44):
If the Arizona Cardinals somehow find a way to upset
the Seattle Seahawks, then we're going to be, Mitchell, we're
going to be singing a much different tune about this team.
It's not going to be just a feel-good, you know,
underdog story anymore. It's going to be some serious talks.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
Well, listen, I mean, Jacoby Brissett came in last year
when the season was over, essentially, and kept this team competitive.
I mean, bottom line, they were a competitive team, and
they go out and spend a top five pick on
on a running back, on a Notre Dame, Jeremiah Love,
you know, and we'll see how that pans out for them.
I mean, he had a touchdown today. They've got offensive weapons.
(46:24):
They've got one of the best tight ends in football,
if not the best tight end in football in training pride.
I mean, if we see anything on a Marvin Harrison Jr.,
maybe this team's got something here, Richard.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
I don't know. And this is against a Chargers defense
that's been respectable. This Chargers defense has been good. They've
been good. You can't just say this is just a
throwaway defense, a throwaway team. And they kept the Chargers defense.
They held them to one sack in a game. One
sack in a game, and the Cardinals had three sacks
(46:54):
and two takeaways. They did not give the football away. Mitchell,
when you don't turn the ball over, you give yourself
a chance. And if that's the kind of football Jacoby
Brissett is going to play, Trey McBride, Kendrick Bourne, and
you didn't get a ton from Michael Wilson and Marvin
Harrison Jr. I mean, he had five catches for 56 yards,
Michael Wilson did, but you expect bigger numbers in this offense.
(47:18):
You didn't expect Kendrick Bourne to be the second leading
receiver behind Trey McBride with eight targets in the game,
but sometimes the games pan out that way, and a
team that is just playing to play and not worried
about who gets the ball not worried about who gets
the credit not worried about anything but the process is
(47:39):
a dangerous team and that's what the arizona cardinals look.
Speaker 2 (47:41):
Like no question about it one thing i love about
the summer mitchell is how easy everything feels the days
are a little more relaxed and i find myself reaching
for the same comfortable go anywhere pieces again and again
that's why i keep coming back to quince I tell

throw them on. I've enjoyed them so much. And it's

Speaker 2 (48:45):
We're going to rip through these last handful of games.
I just want your quick thoughts. I mean, the Philadelphia Eagles,
playing division foe, the Washington Commanders. This game came down
to the wire. The Washington Commanders ultimately fail on a
two-point conversion to end the game, or late in the game,
and Philly comes out victorious. Your thoughts on the Philly victory?
Speaker 1 (49:08):
I mean, a win is a win in the National
Football League, and you'll take it. The Commanders... We're trying
to get cute and do the little shuffle pass. They
could have won this game easily, but still, if you're
a Philly fan, you're, you're kind of concerned because this offense, again,
looks stagnant at times. It looked like, hey, there was
no direction. They got to figure it out. I think
Makai Lemon might have ended the game with negative yardage.
(49:30):
I think he had five catches for negative three yardage.
You know what I mean? Negative three yards. I'm serious, Mitchell.
That's what happened.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
All right. Your boy. Robert Sala, I love the guy.
He's a Dearborn native from Michigan. He's from the Mitten, guys. Oh, boy.
This is a Robert Sala revenge game against his foe,
the New York Jets. Geno Smith gets the better of
(49:58):
Robert Sala, 23-10. Oh, boy. What do we got here
in Tennessee? It just does not look good in Tennessee.
What do we got to say here, Richard?
Speaker 1 (50:11):
Well, it's starting to become an is Cam Ward the
guy kind of conversation. I think Brian Daybold said he
was so excited to work with Cam Ward and all
these things. It's starting to look like, hey, Cam Ward
may not be who they thought he was. And, you know,
maybe this changes and he changes that rhetoric. But right
now it's not looking good. Good for Geno. Geno! I
(50:31):
just love it. I love to see Geno. And I
love to see the New York Jets taking a risk
to say, hey, we're going to sign Geno back and
give him a chance to redeem himself. And he goes
out there and wins them. Their first opener since 2015.
Great job, Geno. Looked in command, smooth. The Jets look
like a completely different team than they were last year.
(50:51):
And competent quarterback play can do that for you.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
How about those boys down in Duval? Liam Cohen and co.
The Jacksonville Jaguars take care of business, Richard. Absent the
Chicago Bears and their offensive showing, this might have been
the best offensive showing of the game. Trevor Lawrence, I
know you've been a harsh critic of Trevor Lawrence over
(51:15):
the years, but he's come into his own this second
half of last season into this season. Richard, the Jags
get it done. Five sacks, two takeaways, manhandle the Cleveland Browns.
Your thoughts on this Jaguars team?
Speaker 1 (51:29):
I like them. Yeah, I mean, you got to like them.
You got to like them. They're fun to watch. And
we thought this could be one of the best receiving
cores in the National Football League. But sometimes, again, we
talk all this on paper stuff, but they are proving it.
Parker Washington picked up where he left off last season,
five for 83 with a touchdown. Jacoby Myers, this is
(51:50):
why they paid him, because he was dominant from the
moment he got there. He was a difference maker. He
was a difference maker in this game. He only had
two catches for 40 yards, but he had a 32-yard touchdown.
looked really good. Trevor Lawrence, 18-23, 245, and four touchdowns
in the game. Again, this is a Browns team, and
I know everybody talks about the Browns. The only time
(52:10):
they get to the Super Bowl is when everybody goes
to the bathroom, but they are usually a good defensive team,
and I thought they should have signed Jim Swartz. I
think they should have signed Swartz as the head coach
of this team, and I said that. I said they
would be better to just accept that he's going to
be the coach and figure out an offense, but everybody,
offensive guy, offensive guy. I don't think that's the answer.
(52:33):
And obviously Deshaun Watson didn't look great in this game,
but the one thing they used to be able to
hold their hat on was defense and Trevor Lawrence shredded
this defense. And then on the flip side, the Jaguars
defense is so fun to watch. I mean, you, you
got everybody playing great. You let me, let me go
down the list of people who got sacks in this game. Um,
Josh Heinz Allen had one and a half, uh, Trevon
(52:56):
Walker had one and a half. Branson Combs had one.
Ventrell Miller had one. And they were all over the place, Mitchell.
They were swarming. And then our guy, Alua Khan, got
him another interception. Again, this opportunistic defense. It's been this way.
(53:17):
Sometimes you think, oh, man, the ball bounces your way
some years, and sometimes it doesn't. But it just continues
to happen for the Jacksonville Jaguars. So it's not luck.
This is talent. This is a great defense. And they've
been consistently taking the ball away. They've been consistently getting
to the quarterback. And they spent a lot of high
draft picks on this defensive line. So it's no surprise
(53:38):
that they're starting to become what you expected. But I
love to see it. They're going to be a fun
and dangerous team to watch.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
No question. And I know we're supposed to go quick
through these games. But I got to talk to you
real quick about the quarterback situation in Cleveland. How short
of a leash do you think Deshaun Watson is on?
Speaker 1 (53:54):
Because.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Listen, I got to believe the fan base is going
to start squawking and wanting Shador Sanders in there at
some point. This Cleveland team did not have high hopes
coming into the season, but a week one showing against Jacksonville,
losing by 24 on the road. I mean, the future
doesn't look very bright for them. At what point do
you turn to Shador Sanders?
Speaker 1 (54:17):
I don't know, Mitchell. I don't know. This is such
an unprecedented situation, and Todd Munkin has got his work
cut out for him because– You're only going to go
as far as the quarterback takes you. And if you
can't get in and out of the huddle, if you
keep having delay of games, like the things that take
no talent, you've got to be the master of. The
game is too hard in general to have those kind
of mistakes. So, again, he's making $ 50 million this year.
(54:38):
So I don't think it's going to be a super
short leash. I think once the fans start making noise
and if they get to booing him again consistently, they're
going to have to do something.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
No question. A team that really impressed today, the Baltimore Ravens.
Go on the road, take your Indianapolis.
Speaker 1 (54:54):
41-23.
Speaker 2 (54:54):
I don't know what it is with these scores, Richard.
There had to be more points scored in the history
of Week 1 in the NFL today. I'm sure the
stats are somewhere. But another absolute shootout here. 41 points
put on the board by the Baltimore Ravens. Zay Flowers
goes off. He gets hurt late in this game. But
(55:14):
Derrick Henry with three touchdowns. How impressed were you with
this win by Baltimore?
Speaker 1 (55:20):
I mean, offensively, you already know what you're going to
get from Baltimore. Lamar Jackson throws for. 324. Derrick Henry
runs 24 carries for. 144 and three touchdowns. I mean,
you talk about an ageless wonder. I mean, there are
seven wonders of the world. Derrick Henry is working on
him being the eighth, Mitchell. And it's been that way
for a really long time. If they can continue to
(55:41):
lean on that and continue to expect that. And, again,
Lamar Jackson has been consistent. But this is eight flowers.
Zay Flowers was trying to show people, hey, I'm worth
the money because there were question marks. People were like,
Zay Flowers got that much? But this hamstring injury is
what the concern is because, hey, you're out there having
a fantastic game. Zay Flowers, five for 150 and a touchdown.
(56:03):
That 54-yard touchdown looked incredible. But now you're out with
a hamstring. The best ability in this National Football League
is availability. And If you can't be available, you can't
be that great. And so hopefully he's able to recover.
Hopefully it's not that serious, but they need Zay Flowers
back to make this passing game as explosive as it
(56:24):
needs to be. You know, because outside of him, Mark
Andrews had four catches. Chris Moore had one catch for
53 yards. Like there's not a ton of options. There's
not a ton of weapons outside of Zay Flowers. So
when he's gone, it makes the game really difficult. When
he's available, it forces the defense to back up. Then
(56:47):
you Derrick Henry. And if you step up and you
want to load the box and stop Derrick Henry, then
we'll bomb you with Zay Flowers or we'll bomb you
with Chris Moore like they did in this game. But
I just, I'm concerned.
Speaker 2 (57:00):
And how about that eighth wonder of the world? Derrick
Henry passes Marcus Allen for third all-time in Russian TDs
in the NFL. it's an impressive showcase of his ability
and his longevity in this league. Derrick Henry, he's on
his way for that gold jacket, Richard. I got to
believe it. I mean, are we looking at a future
Hall of Famer with the statistics he's put on the
(57:22):
board here?
Speaker 1 (57:23):
No question about it. I mean, I would guess everybody
else on that list of all-time rushing touchdowns has gold jackets,
and he's been dominant for more than a decade. I mean,
you start to talk about the shelf life of running
back's And he should have been hitting that shelf life.
And that's why people didn't want to sign him when
Tennessee was looking to offload him or when he was
(57:46):
leaving Tennessee because they didn't know. You know, it's like
history tells you that a running back should be falling
off a cliff at some point. But Derrick Henry is
a testament to some guys are just built different. And
everybody knew that when he was at Alabama, and they
knew that before he was at Alabama. Whatever he's built of,
they're going to study and they're going to replicate. When
(58:07):
they start making clones, Derrick Henry's DNA, Calvin Johnson's DNA,
there's a couple guys, Deion Sanders' DNA, they're going to
be in that mixture, Mitchell, when they start to clone
people and start to make super people because that man
was made of stuff other people aren't made of.
Speaker 2 (58:26):
No question about it. And finally, Richard, as we conclude this,
what should be called a 15-minute drill. I know we
called it a two-minute drill, but it's the 15-minute drill
here at the Richard Sherman Podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers take
care of the Atlanta Falcons. Aaron Rodgers just chose to
(58:46):
air all of his dirty laundry prior to this game
in an interview. God bless him. Aaron Rodgers takes care
of business. You know what, I mean, listen, this team,
I feel like another year under Aaron Rodgers. They had
Michael Pittman Jr., who I think is a great safety
blanket for Aaron Rodgers, next to DK Metcalf. Jalen Warren,
(59:07):
you bring in Rico Dowdle, who had a fantastic season.
year last year with the Panthers I like this Pittsburgh
team and ultimately they take down Atlanta yeah Cooper Rush
is at the helm for them right now which is
I'm puzzled as to why he started I I guess
I'll leave that up to you Richard but The Pittsburgh
Steelers take care of business. Your thoughts on this Pittsburgh
(59:30):
Steelers team and this win against Cooper Rush and the
Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
Well, first off, the Atlanta Falcons are in a spiral.
And just to start the season, you talk about a
battle between Tua Tunga-Vailoa and Michael Penix all training camp
and all season long only to learn that Cooper Rush
is going to be your day one starter. I mean, yikes.
(59:55):
It's a lot of things that make me scratch my head,
but I'd scratch my scalp off my head for that one.
But Aaron Rodgers continues to play solid. I think this
is going to be a defensive team in Pittsburgh. They
usually are when they have great success. It's because their
defense is playing well. They had four sacks, two takeaways.
Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
T.J.
Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
Watt had a T.J. Watt kind of day, two sacks,
an interception, a pick six, like, Two quarterback hits, two
quarterback hurries, just a dominant performance by him. He scored
more than a third of their– or about a third
of their points. And when their defense is playing at
that level, it's all about the offense just kind of
(01:00:34):
staying the course, manage the game. And I think Aaron
Rodgers can get that done at this point in his career,
at this point where he is. I think Mike McCarthy,
a guy who knows Aaron Rodgers about as well as
anybody in the National Football League, understands. They understand each other.
They understand– They've won big games before. They've been in
big games. They've won and lost a lot of games
(01:00:54):
together in the past. I think they have a different
kind of rapport, and I think that's going to benefit
the Pittsburgh Steelers later on down the line. This is
a big win for them. Obviously, an opponent that has
its own set of issues, but showed some promise at
points last year, especially late in the year. A win
is a win in this league, and you appreciate them.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
No question. And next week, hey, the Patriots fresh off
a loss against the Seattle Seahawks are going to be
playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's a game to watch, Richard.
I mean, that's a lot's on the line. I know
it's early in the season, but for the Pats to
start 0-2 potentially, that's a big storyline there. Richard, we
conclude week one, and we're back with a vengeance on

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
Unless you're the Tennessee Titans, Richard. Unless you're the Tennessee Titans.
Unless you're the Tennessee Titans. There wasn't a lot of
hope out there. It's probably over for them. Yep.
