Speaker 2 (00:21):
This is the best of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Welcome back in It's Fox Sports or Radio The Jason
Smith Show with me Mike Harmon. No Jason Smith tonight
in his stead musician, former NFL player, Proud Louisville or Louisville.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Louisville, Cardinal Louisville. What more you want to know?

Speaker 3 (00:53):
My shadow boxing the wall, You got Patrick dancing in there,
Julie escalating quickly, although you guys are now looking like
you're the little punchy dolls that you would.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Have and they missed the field goal thirty two d.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Twenty eight, twenty three, eleven oh six, Georgia Tech, Louisville.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
I gotta say it that way. I don't know, keep going,
keep going.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
But positivity here. I mean thirty two yard field goal
yesterday we saw a game winner.

Speaker 5 (01:21):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
When we go back to that Minnesota Nebraska thing, Matt
rules era, well kind of looks a lot like Scott's frost.
They had a touchdown often improbable. Hey, I'm gonna do
the half back pass, throw it across, it rolls to
the quarterback right up in his arms, and then the
wide receiver standing by himself. You could draw that up.
You could play that one hundred times. It is never

(01:43):
gonna roll that way again. Likewise, the toe tap that
we talked about yesterday. So we're already getting those great
moments and one that of great anticipation. Want to get
your thoughts on this. Get a lot in terms of
the psychology of getting into a new season, right because
we've got coaches trying to give speeches that are probably
less than inspiring, so shaking there. You've got all of

(02:08):
these different permutations. You got players still holding out. How
does that affect a locker room? All of those things
will we'll grab in and wrap in a big hug
over the course of the night. But the debut of
Dion Sanders in Colorado, now he's been coaching we obviously
know the long pitchman slash broadcaster career. And then for

(02:29):
those folks that have been going down the rabbit hole,
and I think Fox has done a good job. You
know when he sat down with Joel Klatt today a
little bit with Troy Aikman, who made sure to remind folks, hey,
once upon a time, this was the greatest defensive back
in returner you ever saw. Oh yeah, right, because I
mean it seems like it's so long ago, but it's

(02:49):
but it's not. I'm still young because I don't want
to age myself that much because I remember in one
of my first uh you know obviously through Florida State,
who he league doesn't even regard as his alma mater
at this point because he didn't get his degree.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
I got it.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, yeah, you know, he's showing love elsewhere, kind of
like guys do on Sunday Night football when they mentioned
the high school, yeah, School of Hard Knocks, or they
give their address, you know, the house growing.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Up or whatever.

Speaker 6 (03:20):
It's even extended to the high schools. It's gone to
middle schools.

Speaker 7 (03:23):
Now.

Speaker 6 (03:23):
I've seen a couple of middle school Yeah. Yeah, I
think it's uh that's going to probably be probably be
the new trend. Uh, you know, rep your high school.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Just imagine you didn't get your nil money.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
I mean, come on, I know that's yeah. I mean,
don't even go there.

Speaker 6 (03:35):
I mean, I'm happy for these kids, but I was
in Littleville doing big things, so I would have, you know,
made a few dollars, probably.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Would have gotten a few bucks. You said, may have
very quickly, and then you turned away. I'm not gonna
follow up with the obvious question for the American.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Absolutely not man this game, what about this game? Let's
go back.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
No, But for for coach Prime, right, yeah, And that's
the personality we've known forever. Like I go back to
nineteen eighty nine, his first football cards. My brothers and I,
you know, we did the buy sell I still do
a little bit on the side, but we would also
send through the mail, right, send it care of the
team facility whatever. And I remember like, within like two

(04:16):
weeks we got one back. It's like, oh, it could be,
it could be. And every day you're checking the mail,
it's like, all right, every once in a while you
get a cool little note back and you open the
envelope and there were two cards, both signed from Prime
and always remember the first site of that signature because

(04:37):
the first s and his surname was a dollar sign.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Oh yeah, and he's been signing it like that ever since.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
But he goes in and we obviously had the huge
meeting that went viral right and became the biggest you know,
hot button outside of conference realignment, which will delve into
in about a half hour from now. Outside of that,
I mean, it's the biggest story in college football.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Right. We know what Caleb Williams is.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
We think we know what Hartman was because he performed
the last couple of years. Right now he's at Notre
Dame and now it's will Notre Dame. Finally, you know,
find their way all the way through and you know,
do you find the spots on the schedule to navigate
including a game against usc But that we all know
a lot of guys changing around in the portal. Fine,

(05:23):
But when it comes to Dion taking over a program Colorado,
as we know, once upon a time historic we go
back to Cordell Stewart, Michael Westbrook and those guys the
enemy back in the day, Rashon Salam winning the Heisman Trophy,
all of those things. But coach Prime trying to bring
them back to prominence and saying I'm going to do
it my way and this is how I'm going And

(05:44):
obviously his son being the quarterback, you know, there's a
relationship you didn't have to worry about forging because that
just came with you as well as some others.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
But I mean, how do you expect this to go?
Does it play?

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Because the over underwind total clearly is not you know
something people are jumping in saying, ah, you know it
is going to work swimmingly right off the jump. But
I'm just curious from a personality standpoint.

Speaker 6 (06:08):
Speaking of Prime, he's on the commercial net.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
Right now after that commercial get rid of it. You
know what, man, it's it's going to be exciting.

Speaker 6 (06:15):
I think the one thing about Prime, you know, coach Sanders,
is wherever he goes and whatever the situation is, it's
going to be interesting.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
Right.

Speaker 6 (06:21):
So I think we're all involved. We all know that,
you know, he has a particular way of talking about
himself and about his program, and that's a beautiful thing.
I think players tend to like that. They like a
coach that's outspoken, they like a coach that's gonna you know,
be able to raw rob them, especially on the college
on the collegiate level, So he's going to do well.

(06:44):
As far as him doing well this year and having
the magical nine ten win season, it's just not gonna
happen his first year. They got a lot of a
lot of questions on that on that team offensively and defensively,
and so you know he's gonna build, he's gonna have
them play the right way, but it's gonna take a
little time.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
TCU favored by nearly three touchdowns. Yeah, as they said
tomorrow right off the jump. So certainly, you know you
want to talk about a storybook kind of thing. Is
if you come out and you're able to land that
first blow, even if it's not sustained. Yeah, just showing
and being able to battle in the ring. Oh, you
know the odd couple talking a little boxing earlier and

(07:21):
their show today. You know, some of it is just
being able to put up the show for a bit
and saying, hey, you got you got that puncher's chance
that you're hanging around.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
Yeah, no, it's gonna it would suit them well if
that could happen. I mean, you got a TCU team
that's very very well coached in a very well oiled
machine as well. So they're not playing a team that's
coming in that's a little bit maybe a little bit better.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Than they are.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
This team was just you know, in the top four
last year, in the top two last year, and so
I mean they know how to win, and they know
how to play in front of you know, a big
audience and a rackus one as well, and so I
expect them to come out and handle business.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
And they've also been dealing with the last few months
of bulletin board a little bitterness, yeah, material, not not necessarily. Man, Look,
they've got other ambitions to this right the season as all.
But certainly when we talk about Week one of college
football and the eyeballs, because it's still before the NFL yep, right,
we're still in that little uh, you know, the winds
kind of swirling as we get ready for a week

(08:20):
from well yesterday.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
And we get things kicked off.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Nine scholarship and twenty five overall players returning from twenty
twenty two. That's the one stating all the breakdowns, right,
talk about returning production or whatever. And we do that
with a lot of other teams as we go through
this one, it means a little bit more.

Speaker 6 (08:39):
Yeah, I'm wondering right now, they're going to play you
know the old school hard for football where they got
to play both sides, offensive defense, a little iron a
little iron man. Yeah, I mean that could be fun.
I mean, that can take it back to the old days.
And you know, Primes bringing his old image and you know,
his his personality to the table. So you know, I
keep going back a few decades and in a few
decades before that, and let's play some our man football

(09:01):
and see what happens.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
I think he'll have them motivated to do it. So
we'll see.

Speaker 6 (09:04):
But like I said, it's gonna be a hard challenge
for them to come out and have to play TCU
first though. That's gonna be that's gonna be brutal.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
The curiosity for me during this whole process is the
recruiting of a player. How much you're recruiting the parents
if you're Deon Sanders versus versus the players, because they
may know the legend of right, but the parents are
the ones that watched it, whether it's Florida State or
whether it's his stops in the NFL, and greatness all

(09:32):
the way through, but like not that you're not always
trying to work the parents a bit, seems like for prime.
I mean that if we're putting a big pie chart up.
Oh yes, it's the eighty twenty for sure, cell to parents.
I mean, it's been that way since I was around.
I'm sure it's been that way even before before I've
been around. So you get a guy with the you know,

(09:55):
the stature, the pizazz, and he knows how'll talk any way,
not even just you know, from a trash talk standpoint,
you can see him doing.

Speaker 6 (10:04):
And you'll get in there and sell and press and
meetings and all those things he can sell you. So
definitely going after the parents first, and the players, like
you said, I mean, obviously Dion's one of the guys
that would never not be remembered just because of who
he is in his aura and obviously his play as well.
But yeah, he seems like one of those ones that
the legend will never die. So I think he'll be

(10:25):
all right and be around.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
I'm just curious to see how this flows. Obviously it'll
be an interesting first year, and then since the conference
blows up, uh, it's all bets are off thereafter. But
the long road begins with the first step, as they say,
twenty eight twenty three, and drive and driving. Watch your eyes.
You got to smile on your face the whole time.

(10:48):
We're watching so much going on in the sporting universe
here on a Friday night, as it should be, as
we get back into school, back into the throes of
you know what fall becomes right summer of last summer's
kiss as it were with our Labor Day holiday. You know,
it only took me twenty four minutes going door to door,
going about twenty miles. Oh what the traffic gods on

(11:12):
a Friday night smiled on me. So I have no
idea what happened. And I hope everybody on the roads
here in Los Angelesan were everybody just fighting to get
in for the Beyonce show already.

Speaker 6 (11:21):
Know it's that old school boost almighty. You just I
think you moved the traffic and let the and let
the frarid come down the street.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
You're just trying to get Steve Carell back here, you know,
with an Evan almighty. You want to just jam that
in as you see nicely down We're live here for
the Tyrack dot Com. Fox Sports Radio studios. We've got
updates and to update a game of great interests. How
do we go to our man, Steve de Sager accompany,
then laugh by a partner roads.

Speaker 8 (11:48):
By the way, now that you've mentioned out loud, how
great the LA traffic is?

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Uh yeah.

Speaker 8 (11:53):
Two lane shutdown on the four h five lane shutdown on.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
Spired everybody to get out on the road. They thank you.

Speaker 8 (12:03):
Meanwhile, it gave it Atlanta. Georgia Tech has not scored
in the second half tonight. Their lead is down to
was down to twenty eight to twenty three. It looks
like Louisville has just passed for a touchdown. It's going
to go for two. Got about eight minutes to go
in this game, season opener and hardly the only college
football game we've got going tonight on FS one. Michigan

(12:24):
State beat Central Michigan thirty one to seven. Miami of
Florida had a weather delay at the start. They eventually
beat Miami Ohio in South Florida thirty eight to three.
Eastern Michigan over Howard thirty three twenty three. Louisville going
for two again. About eight minutes left in this game
at Georgia Tech and it's incomplete. So the Louisville lead

(12:44):
is twenty nine, twenty eight at the Dome in Atlanta
at Kansas Jayhawks lead Missouri State with about ten minutes left,
twenty seven to seventeen and the late game starts in
a half an hour. Stanford at ohe to one, Hawaii.
The ACC this morning, Yeah, adding Stanford, Cal, and SMU
starting next year in all sports, that'll bring ACC membership

(13:06):
to eighteen schools, seventeen in football full time. The Big
Ten will also be up to eighteen starting next year.
The ACC got the minimum vote today needed to pass
twelve to three. Well, NC State now said yes, that
flipped it.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
It's going to happen.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
Voting no reportedly were still North Carolina, Florida State, and Clemson,
and the new schools will not get full revenue shares.
Stanford and Cal start with thirty percent payouts for seven years.
SMU reportedly gets no media revenue from the ACC for
their first nine years.

Speaker 3 (13:41):
Nine in that nine years, steve nine years just so
we could put it on the letterhead.

Speaker 8 (13:47):
So what is the ACC telling you, exactly? You bring
nothing to our table for the first nine years you're
going to be in our Conference. I understand the logic though,
of adding multiple teams, because they're still I mean, three
schools voted no. There's still the possibility that down the road,
before this next TV deal end, they could lose three
schools of the ACC, and then you don't want to

(14:09):
go through all this again. But the ACC's current TV
contract runs through twenty thirty six. By the way, this
money saved from adding schools that won't be getting equal
shares initially, that can help Florida State and Clemson, for example,
at least a little. Those are two of the schools
that wanted better revenues. They've been quite public about that.
At Basketball's World Cup, the US beat Montenegro eighty five

(14:31):
seventy three. The Americans trailed at the half this morning
thirty eight thirty seven, and the US was being out
rebounded all game long, outscored on second chance points twenty
two to three, but still came through as the Lakers
Austin Reeves made a key three pointer with under three
minutes left. At the US Open in New York tonight,
American Coco Goff won in three sets, six love in

(14:52):
the third to Major League Baseball the Braves of homeward.
It's a one nothing lead over the Dodgers bottom of
the second, and in honor of Jason Smith, it was
former met Travis star No who hit it out. The
Padres lead the Giants six to one in the bottom
of the third, Diamondbacks ahead of the Orioles two to
one bottom of the fourth, Blue Jays have tied it
up at Colorado five to five top of the seventh.

(15:13):
The first place Brewers at home lead the Phillies seven
to five bottom of the eighth, and not a good
night in Houston for starting pitcher Justin Verlander. Six innings,
six runs allowed to the Yankees. He gave up four
long balls. Yanks lead bottom of the ninth six to
two over the Strows and Jason Dominguez of New York
homeward in his first Major league at bat.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
There you go, the Martian has landed. Not just first bat, first.

Speaker 8 (15:37):
Pitch, first pitch, pitch went out yes, with of course
the family on hand, which was great to see. Wins
for Minnesota and Cleveland as well.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
Back to you story of him sitting at the airport
with a glove on yea and someone asked him, you know,
didn't know who he was would you just kind of as, yeah,
I play kind of oh yeah good, Yeah, I'm a Martian. Yeah,
just way all right, So there you go. Yeah, I
want to buy some rookie cards.

Speaker 8 (16:03):
Steve, Wait a minute, he's a Martian in the NASA
city today.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
That's the way it works. Oh, crazy, beautiful. This is
the I know you.

Speaker 8 (16:12):
Mentioned the cards for the rookies though. This is going
to be just like when everybody was buying up all
the Greg Jeffries cards. He's gonna be a Hall of
Fame at you. Some people right now are saying.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Who's going back to nineteen eighty eight?

Speaker 8 (16:23):
Some people turn out to be Frank Thomas. Some people
turn out to be Greg Jefferies. A second Mets reference.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Wow, leaving no stone unturned the night. But yeah, Domingus,
the great Vegas misdirection by the Yankees.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
It's a terrible season. It's awful season.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Look at the kid, Look at the kids looking he's
so young, he's so young.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
Thanks Steve.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
We'll keep an eye on the scoreboard as the night
goes on. An anxious carry roads next to me here,
Carrie twenty five roads on Twitter slash x where you
find him find me over at Swollen Dome. You want
to get in involved. Coming up next, Kulpa. I don't
know that it was really necessary.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
But we got one anyway.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
In the world of podcasts and well, spousal privilege being
executed here. We'll talk about that coming up next on
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
Hey, welcome back in.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
Fox Sports Radio Live fortheti rack dot Com Studios, Mike
Harmon alongside Carrie Roads. The Jason Smith Show with Me
Mike Carmon. No Jason Smith. Tonight, we're watching the Dodgers.
Oh early rests reminiscent of yesterday. It's for nothing in
the fifth Braves batting couple of runners on as Uria

(17:54):
is getting racked around a little bit here. That just
means the Dodgers will stage another dramatic comeback effort, or
maybe they won't, but we'll watch it here live and
in living color. As we're here with you.

Speaker 4 (18:08):
Much being made.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
Look, we've got Chris Prefet on the Ones and Tuesday
Night prior to Detroit, where he can find his stuff
at Chris Prefet.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
He is in the.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Rarefied air as a media member covering the Detroit Lions,
where they're actually favored and everybody's darling coming into the
season in the NFC North. Now me, growing up on
the South side of Chicago, I have lived and died
with some really fun and exciting Bears teams Bears, and

(18:37):
some really miserable, terrible squads and regimes that I'd like
to forget, you know. I'd like to go men in black,
pull up the flashy thing and just forget some of that.
But despite a lot of prognostications going out and reyby,
once in a while, someone's just throwing the dart, I think,
just to be different. But the Bears from most are

(19:00):
the consensus last place team in the NFC North, right,
you're you're talking there, or folks that just decided it
had to be everything Aaron Rodgers. So Jordan Love's gonna
come in and he's going to be terrible, But Justin
Field's getting MVP consideration. A lot of wagers on the

(19:21):
Bear starter still jury out in a lot of cases
as to whether he's a viable NFL quarterback, which I'll
ask your opinion here in a second. But he's taken
to the old tact by one of the greatest in
NBA history. When it comes to social media this.

Speaker 7 (19:38):
Year, I don't look at it, honest at the wadst Twitter.
I don't have Twitter, so like a trace flag. We
were talking at the other day, I didn't know any
of it, and so he told me, so, I'm surprised
sitting there stuff like that. So it's just best not
so look at that stuff because I honestly feel like
there's people in this world that they just want to

(19:59):
hey on you or they want to criticize every little
thing you do this and that.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
What he could have done this better?

Speaker 7 (20:04):
Yeah, it was a touchdown, but like so it was
just like his best not even.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
You know, he's not wrong on that.

Speaker 3 (20:11):
You could you could score with the touchdown until say
what you had a guy wide hopeing over there.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
I mean, we know how that goes.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
This was part of a conversation that he'd had the
Chicago Tribune on Odyssey's podcast Take the North But Going
Zero Dark twenty three, the lebron thing that he used
to do going into the playoffs and everything else, and
then realizing well, that's a lot of content, and that's
a lot of views and stuff I'm not getting. So
I don't know that that exists anymore. Yeah, no, no matter,

(20:40):
you just have someone on your team do it. But
for Fields and sometimes not a bad approach.

Speaker 6 (20:45):
It's a great approach for him. It shows his team,
It showed his organization that he's not gonna be out
putting out random tweets and you know, not having enough
time to study his playbook because he's scrolling on Instagram.
I'm looking for you know, looking for hotties on there,
or whatever the case may be. So yes, zero doc
thirty twenty three when it comes to social media, is

(21:08):
a good thing for a quarterback like Justin Fields, who's
coming out and having a chance to have all the
faith in him and like you said, have a few
MVP votes thrown in there as well, or you know,
prognosticators or fans alike thinking that he could be a
breakout player in twenty three. But you know, Justin Field
is the guy that I just really don't think he

(21:29):
has enough to be a really good player this year.
And I think their team is going to do really bad.
And so you said it, I think They're going to
finish fourth in that division and it's just not going
to look pretty for them at all.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Is currently tied for tenth with Dak Prescott at twenty
five to one, Mahomes at six to one, your favorite
Burrow right behind him, coming in with injury considerations and
I think he has a little bit of that. Jonathan
Taylor coming in as well. How hurd of my versus
why isn't my contract fatter.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
The case of Boroughs? You do you think that's right now?

Speaker 4 (22:03):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
I don't think a preseason you don't need I mean,
he don't need to be out there, right, Yes, so
you can play it up well and then finally he's
back at practice. It's there as you go back to
week one. But but it's one of those considerations that
you're just like, how how much are you hurt?

Speaker 4 (22:19):
How much are you hurt? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Right, it's from a psychological because let's face the Bengals
aren't exactly known for rolling out novelty sized checks to
guys either.

Speaker 6 (22:28):
That's true, but they found their guy. And yes, it's
gonna be you right about their past, but they've got
the golden ticket. They got, they got their golden pony
in this in this race, and I think they're gonna
take care of him. And yeah, I mean him being
out there in the preseason didn't matter anyway, We've already
we know who he is, we know what's up of
quarterback he's gonna be, So there's no question there. Let's

(22:51):
be healthy going to the season and they're going to
get the deal done with him. They're not gonna wait
too long.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
I would hope.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
So you would think that stuff would push through once
Justin Herbert got his deal. But hey, it's a strange business, right.
We're watching Chris Jones, We're watching Nick Bosa. Obviously a
lot of ngs slung on the Jonathan Taylor. I think
the defensive guys are a little more interesting, at least
from where I sit, based on look. Jonathan Taylor is
a great running back, but on a wins loss basis,

(23:20):
you can't tell me he's anywhere near as important as
those other two guys are in terms of team fortunes
and how everything flows from them. I love running backs.
I'm about three yards and a cloud of dust kind
of guy. Again, big ten guy. When the Big ten
was still running the football before you know Tiller and
everybody started changing things up, but Purdue. But go back

(23:42):
to the run game. Obviously growing up watching Walter Payton
running behind Matt Suey and all that stuff for the Bears,
but recognizing as much as I love the running back
position and still do, it's an ever evolving thing in
terms of wins and losses. It's hard to argue that
your win total is shifting too much if if Taylor's

(24:03):
not there, right, what are we talking a half win
between him and Dion Jackson probably and Evan Hole and
whoever else? I got the Northwestern back, but however else
you cobble that together versus what we know a quarterback
is worth, a good quarterback being worth a touchdown to
the spread, but a defensive player the caliber of a

(24:23):
Bosa or a T. J.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Watt.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
You see what Pittsburgh does if he's not on the field, right,
it's the the crumbles, right, they're much to It's like
the field during the Dark Knight Dark Knight rises when
hines Ward is suddenly faster than he's ever been in
his life, trying to outrun the explosives. But we'd look
at the the idea of Jones for for Kansas City.

(24:49):
I mean that that's the one to me that I'm
hanging the star and going all right, I get it.
And Travis Kelsey coming out and talking and people worried
about Travis Kelsey's wallet. He's doing fine, fine, He's fine,
especially with the extra fifteen minutes of fame. If they
he really wanted to push the issue, he'd go push
the issue right right, But he's not, at least for now. Eventually,

(25:09):
you know, they'll figure out the pressure points, like he's
watching an old steven Sagall movie as to how to
take somebody out?

Speaker 6 (25:15):
Right?

Speaker 4 (25:15):
What I did there? A guy who has been relevant
definitely to the risk get you well?

Speaker 3 (25:19):
Or are the Denzel Washington thing right in the latest
Equalizer the Equalizer three that you saw that little promotion going.
But it's just an interesting game of chicken when it
comes to players of that caliber coming into a new season.

Speaker 6 (25:36):
Yeah, I think the you said you hit it, you
hit the nail on the head. Though, I mean it's
those defensive guys, especially edge rushers, they can wreck a game,
they can rereca you know, it can be one of
those situations where you know your defense doesn't function with
those without those guys because now you've got to bring
an extra guy out of covers to come down and
get pressure on quarterbacks and just that extra space for

(25:58):
the elite quarterbacks and that vision, especially in the AFC,
it can provide your team with the loss or win.
And it's really swayed on those guys production and them
being there. Chris Jones last year in Kennas City. If
he's not there, they don't win the championship last year
and that was proven. You know, he had a big
game in the playoffs that you know, changed the course
of what they were going to do in that playoff series.

(26:19):
So you know, to see them get to that point
and to not pay these guys, it's always tricky. Team
like Kenna City that historically doesn't pay pay out well
either and for your quarterback to be grossly underpaid the
way he is and you're tight.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
He made a choice, he did no because look, this
is a choice. But but this is where I got
to defend the speat. Yeah, I mean he made it.
He made a choice.

Speaker 6 (26:41):
But they've come out and said he's gross under paid too.
It's not just but you can recognize that right exactly.
But it's like I've been arguing with the certainly with
Jason quite a bit in the collective noise. I think
I would call it related to the Indianapolis situation, you know,
because Jimmers say is quote that got everybody up in

(27:01):
arms of you know, I could be dead and you
could be gone and we all moved on, right, all right,
Just it's a little brash, but him wrong. Uh.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
But it's also the the idea of I don't need
to pay you yet, like I can love you, I
and I and I think you're the greatest player for
the position and what you need and what you do
in the community and what you are for our helmet
and logo and everything else. But if I don't have
to pay you yet, and you're coming off an injury

(27:30):
and you're a running back, why am I rushing to
write you a giant check just to make you feel
better about yourself?

Speaker 4 (27:37):
I get it? Yeah, right, yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
With these other guys, I mean, you're talking about materially
changing your squad.

Speaker 4 (27:44):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:45):
And with Patrick Mahomes, he decided that was enough, does it?
Do they have the handshake agreement of we tear this
up as the market changes over a couple of years.

Speaker 4 (27:53):
Maybe, maybe not well, the Marcus changed and they haven't
torn it up yet.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
So well, but it's been it's been a couple of years, right,
it's not deep into a really long deal.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
Right.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
But if he starts getting anxious, I gotta imagine they'll
be able to shake a few more nickels out for
him and everybody will be just just fine. But it's
the you know, the dollar worrying about a guy. Ooh,
he's terribly underpaid. It's like the Tom Brady argument never
made any sense to me. With me, you could argue
what they did in New England with the money that
he didn't make. But from the rest of the league,

(28:26):
everybody could go in with their agent or I should say,
the team say, hey, you know what, Tom Brady took
this deal. We'd like you to take a deal like that. Okay,
asked an answer, because I'm gonna tell you to pound
sand because I want my money. I'm not Tom Brady.
I didn't have Gizelle and I hadn't been around for
twenty years. Yes, so I need to get paid now.
Oh yeah, right. To tell me that that had any

(28:47):
material effect on anybody else's dollars is just foolish. It's
just foolish to me. Everybody else was still making crazy money,
because if it really affected it, then you would have
seen guys so only making seventeen eighteen or some marginal
amount above Brady as opposed to getting into the thirties
and forties exactly.

Speaker 6 (29:06):
Yeah, those numbers, even though he was taking you know,
quote unquote pay cuts to help the team win. Obviously,
those deals are structured in a way also that they're
making a lot more. They're making a lot more money
than you think because those deals of what he would
be taking top dollar as far as the end number
was let's go back and check out what his guaranteed contracts.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
But it was.

Speaker 6 (29:26):
And so I think that's the part that people, you know,
kind of gloss over when they're seeing these deals. They
see these astronomical numbers at the end of the day.
At the end of the day, it looks pretty.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
What's the guy guaranteed, what's the signing.

Speaker 4 (29:36):
Is guaranteed, what's the signing bonus? Yes, that's it.

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Everything else is funny money. Hey it's a shiny number.
Hey you got the most per year. How much of
it's guaranteed? Exactly, Which is why Kirk Cousins is a
wizard guaranteed money master the restriction, and he's now got
that cool kind of.

Speaker 4 (29:56):
Yeah, yeah, No, he's my favorite player right now. Stuff.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
He decided I look too nerdy, so I'm gonna go
next level. I'm going Hetfield from the Black Album.

Speaker 4 (30:05):
I like that. Yes, Oh, he just needs to grow
the hair out a little bit.

Speaker 6 (30:08):
You know, he's become my He's become my favorite player
right now. Over the off season. He's kind of won
me over with the Netflix show. And obviously he's not
you know, he's you know, Lamar is my favorite player.
He's my my, my, my little protegee. It's my guy.
But Lamar Jackson. But I mean Kirk Cousins right now.
The Netflix special just how he's portrayed, how he came
up and played, how he talked about, how he expressed

(30:29):
himself and who he was, and we got to see
the real Kirk Cousins. Now, I'm like on the bend wagon.
Even though they're going to finish third that division. I
still I still like Kirk though.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
All right, so there third, the Bears are fourth, So
what pack.

Speaker 4 (30:43):
The Lions? I am?

Speaker 6 (30:45):
Yeah, yeah, I think the Lions are finally going to
get it done as far as making that leap to
the playoffs and then you know you're getting the playoffs.
Anything can happen in that NFC. I'm not so sold
on any team. The only team that I do feel
will have a better year than most people are thinking.

(31:05):
I'm thinking San Franz is gonna probably win the NFC.
And that's one thing that's one of my hot takes
for you right now.

Speaker 3 (31:12):
Okay, because we'll stay with that, because you're gonna need
to sell me on brock Purty. I will a little
bit more or Sam Darnold or the combination thereof sell
job coming up next year. Carrie Rhoads in for Jason Smith.
He's got a big shovel next to him because he's
also putting dirt over the Georgia Tech squad after the

Speaker 8 (33:37):

the top of the six, hitting three run three homers.
I should say five runs total off Julio Arius, the
LA starter who lasted five innings oureus including Tonight's and
his last outing against Boston eleven innings, eleven runs, allowed,
six home runs, giving up in those last two starts.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
He learned it from watching Lance Lynn Yeah.

Speaker 8 (34:03):
Yeah like his teammate. Last night, Padres at home lead
the Giant six to two in the bottom of the sixth,
and Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the Orioles four to one

the ninth lead at Colorado thirteen to seven. Earlier wins

Speaker 6 (35:00):
To I heard that. Yeah, that was very disrespectful, Mike.
I I did that pretty well. I was, Uh, that
was probably my my strong suit holding those guys down.

Speaker 4 (35:08):
No fear nobody.

Speaker 3 (35:10):
I wasn't disrespect you. So it's a changing game. Some
tall tasks.

Speaker 6 (35:14):
I would love it if I was playing right now
in this era of football. I would You can get
to touch anybody, I will get it. I mean's got
to be in the space.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
I'll catch it. I'll take it. You just gotta I'm
like the terminata. Look at you take the ball. You
know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Well, I mean that's pile up some interceptions. You want
to talk about getting paid, make money? That got no
question about. I mean because we were watching, you know,
the feudal efforts on some of the I mean, they
gotta get rid of these gloves.

Speaker 4 (35:43):
Man, it's hard. There you go, there you go. You're
a little late, but you came, you came through. You
came through.

Speaker 6 (35:49):
No the know the gloves are playing dB in general, Mike,
it's such a hard thing to do.

Speaker 3 (35:58):
We had that big argument the other day on on
Skip Show.

Speaker 4 (36:01):
Oh yeah, they were. Those guys are getting after it. Yeah,
Ritchsharman's right on that. That's it's the hardest position.

get things flowing, it's that time of year, big concerts
rolling through town, but obviously football front and center. College

(38:22):
football with your Louisville squad coming back and getting a
big victory, come from behind, some anxious moments along the way,
some early taunting in these Fox Sports radios, Chris studios. Well,
you know, I wasn't gonna name names, but you know what,
the we're one big happy family, right, I mean, Chris,

(38:45):
do you know it? I mean we all we all
wear it when our team isn't doing well. As a
Bears fan and he as a Lions fan. We we
We've had some conversations about being also Rans.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
And me as a death player, We've had all those things.
So there you go. Well, I didn't feel like I really.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
Jets you and for me certainly here for a decade
now alongside my guy Jason Smith in this time slot,
we have watched a lot of painful games together for
his beloved Jets, and we've we've had to have some
online therapy here, some therapy in these uh studios. Some

(39:30):
laughs for the rest of the nation, no question about it,
as we've poked the bear. But look, my Chicago franchises. Look, man,
I got a people in my hometown trying to convince
you that someone smuggled a gun in the roles of
fat on their belly.

Speaker 4 (39:47):
They've got lots of stuff going up a lot.

Speaker 6 (39:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:49):
So psychologically, you know, you're you're dealing You're dealing with
a lot of stuff. Yeah, and you're you know, have
been the butt of a lot of jokes.

Speaker 6 (39:58):
For a long long time if you did. Yeah, youre
trying to talk about the butt fumble. I see what
you're doing.

Speaker 4 (40:02):
Yeah, well, you know, sometimes you got a backdoor your
way into that. At Carry twenty five Roads.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
On Twitter, we are wordsmith and the hell lot of
stuff here on a beautiful Friday night. We're also keeping
our eye on the US Open as we have a
little bit of chaos potential maybe order getting restored. But
Djokovic was.

Speaker 4 (40:22):
Down two sets. Yep.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
Yeah, so a little bit of chaos. But I wanted
to go into the psychology of locker room, right. We
had the Justin Field story that we did last hour
of Hey, you know what, I gotta get away from
social media. It's a lot of bad negative space. I
think it's something we all kind of feel, but it's
a necessary evil depending on your line of business. Yes, right, yes, Look,

(40:46):
I've long said once my girls are through school and
on their own and into their lives, I may throw
my cell phone into the ocean and just be a
landline guy.

Speaker 4 (40:59):
I might, I might just go back to.

Speaker 3 (41:02):
Right back to the landline. It's not only for buzzing
the package deliverer in or your fast food order that's
coming via delivery service, or.

Speaker 4 (41:11):
It doesn't work.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
Well sometimes you got that, but but the idea like
I'm done with it, so I get it. But shameless
self promotion for what we do here at Swollen Dome
at Harmon Rants over in the TikTok world. More of
that for the football season, the podcast, everything through the
iHeartRadio app and wherever you get your audio for what

(41:35):
we do here Jason and I each night Carrie graces
to come in and hang out with us and have
some fun with us tonight as we get ready in
Earnest for the NFL season. But we're in that weird
spot a couple more days. And as a player, I mean,
I certainly know talking to enough executives and coaches through
the years, it's that worst time of the year, right

(41:55):
because you're ready to go, but now you've got a
little bit of idle time. Right it's a holiday weekend
right before you really come back in earnest, and obviously
you got a Thursday night game. Everybody's ready, right, I
mean the lines are playing night, I mean this big
stuff as we get rolling. But for other other players, right,
they're away from the facilities, and there's a lot the

(42:17):
nervous nights of please let me wake up and not
have it having to have addressed my phone or blips
from the computer or whatever else. Yeah, but but also
the you know you're you're also trying to inspire, right,
it's a new season and you're trying to rally your squad,
and so let me play play the clip first, because
this went around the world today.

Speaker 4 (42:40):
Deal world.

Speaker 3 (42:41):
All right, we've already watched Arizona trying to undo everything
from the Steve Kaima era. They've changed out the coach
and now he gave us this gym a little earlier.

Speaker 4 (42:52):
Welcome back.

Speaker 5 (42:55):
Who drove over here?

Speaker 4 (42:57):
Quick your hands?

Speaker 5 (42:58):
Who took the bus? Do you have fire in your gut?
Digit We're here for a reason, don't get that twisted. Okay,
We're here for a reason to win games.

Speaker 4 (43:11):
So if you didn't have that fire in your gut,
you better light the fire pretty fast. Be who you are.
Just understand I'm looking for killers.

Speaker 3 (43:22):
So that's Jonathan Gannon, your new head coach of the
Arizona Cardinals, a team many believe will be in the
running for Caleb Williams, and then trying to figure out
how to offload the lofty, hefty contract that they signed
with Kyler Murray and figuring out the next iteration of
the squad. Let's face it, on paper, it doesn't look good,

(43:44):
and you've traded away a couple of big time talents
and the roster going in is not one that you're
feeling great confidence in. And in division you've got Seattle
get ready for another run. The forty niners we talked about,
and the Rams might be just good enough to be
dangerous right again, no huge expectations there, as we alluded

(44:07):
to earlier with the Kelly Matt stafford and the state
of the locker room, and a lot of it's going
to depend on whether Cooper cup can stay upright. And
is Aaron Donald anchoring your defense because when he wasn't
on the field, I don't know, if you watched the
run defense, I could have been putting up.

Speaker 4 (44:24):
Seven a pop.

Speaker 3 (44:25):
You could have got seven, oh yeah against that defensive
front what they were doing up there. Yeah yeah, man, there.
There wasn't much much going on. I was I was
feeling pretty good. Well I got I mean, look, man, Quadzilla.

Speaker 4 (44:38):
I understand. I see the appearance.

Speaker 3 (44:40):
You know, I like low center of gravity, and I'm
short enough that I might be able to do well. Okay,
I'll one move my knees flying into the man. It's gone.
But like you hear that, and I watched it a
number of times, like all right, we're editing this together
and putting this out where this is the speech? Like

(45:01):
how many of you drove here to?

Speaker 4 (45:03):
Where are we going?

Speaker 8 (45:05):
What?

Speaker 3 (45:05):
You're a master of your own domain because you drove
a car to the team facility. That's how you're jumping off.
Not hey, we're going into battle. Imagine yourself, you know,
Maximus Decimus Aurelius. Yeah at my signal on leegh hell
oh no, did anybody take the bus?

Speaker 4 (45:22):
Yeah? Because I'm looking for killers. I'm looking for killers. Well,
I mean, look, go well together. I don't know. I'm
a Chicago guys. I've read plenty of stories.

Speaker 3 (45:32):
I've seen many a movie where maybe things on the
bus don't start so well, maybe not quite the same
killer instinct that you're looking for.

Speaker 4 (45:42):
Out of football.

Speaker 6 (45:43):
You know what, Mark, Mike, this is This really killed
me because it is a terrible SoundBite. It's a terrible clip.
You could even in the edits and the cuts of
you know, the cameras panics to different players and you
see the expressions and they're just not moved at all.
But the one that really stuck out the most was
Buddha Baker. He was just sitting there with this blank

(46:06):
stare on his face, just exasperated about what was going
on the same like, but that's right now. He's your guy,
and he's the guy. But I'm gonna tell you one
more thing about this situation, Mike, that really hurts me
to my core. Jonathan Gannon was my understudy in college,
so I've known him for a long time. So to
see him in this position, yeah, and to start off

(46:27):
his regime, to start the season off that way so lackluster,
it hurt my heart. Like he was my I call
him JG. Like that is my guy I saw.

Speaker 4 (46:37):
I mean, you're a musician.

Speaker 3 (46:39):
Extemporaneous speech here yelling at me and Steve Hartman and
anybody else said, and you know, when the microphone goes on,
it's like we're doing shoot interviews like we're in the WWE.

Speaker 4 (46:50):
And then my guy, that's the plan, that's it. And
beyond that.

Speaker 3 (46:54):
I mean, look, I get it, you're not running everything
you're gonna say past your assistance or whatever. But then
they put that out like like it was some kind
of big deal, like that's the other day, Like as
an organization, you failed him. Yeah, you failed him. The
guys in the room know what happened. They were there,
they watched it go down. But then prop, hey, this

(47:17):
is our coach.

Speaker 4 (47:17):
He's ready. That's gonna be a meme. That's all that's
gonna be.

Speaker 6 (47:21):
It's like, I'm sure it's already, mean ready, it's gonna
be uh tears coming out of his eyes as he speaks,
and it's gonna It's gonna get worse from here, is
what I'm trying to say.

Speaker 4 (47:31):
Mike.

Speaker 6 (47:32):
There's no like rainbow on the other side of this situation.
It's gonna get worse now.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
He did go to Santagnanca's High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
I am a graduate of Santagnacia's College Prep in Chicago,
Okaya Downtown. So you guys are working on their baseball field.
At one point you got like guys are coming to
try to steal my tools.

Speaker 6 (47:53):
Wow, and you're here to tell us about it. So
you're pretty nifty. Like we talked about, I got a
good first step.

Speaker 3 (48:01):
After about twenty yards, you'll catch me and pass me

(48:22):
and going back well when I was there and now
it's truly been ripped up. And the high school I
went to had leased a bunch of the land that
they owned to the city, and the city put up
housing projects, and they had one piece that was a
baseball diamond. And we were out there and I would

(48:42):
go back in the summer while I was in college
and earned some money that I hire us to go
and do some jobs. And I was helping the building
engineer out on the sprinkler novels in here pitching, pitching,
and he goes, just take that, take that, take that
all of that and the rest of that you can leave.
Like he goes, we're getting shot at. I was like,

(49:02):
you're hearing this but trying to figure out what the hell.
And then as you got a few steps away, you
recognized all right there on the twelfth level or whatever.
And then as soon as we got away to people
came and took whatever tools we well, we we took
the ones that were the price, were gonna be the
tough ones. Everything else you want, the ranches have at it.

(49:26):
But yeah, I got I got stories for days, But
that that one was, uh, that that will always shape
shape your life. Eventually, they they took the land back
from the city and the whole area is now different
and it's like a college campus over.

Speaker 6 (49:41):
There, sotsd about, you know, random sounds that are around you.

Speaker 4 (49:45):
Do you have that moment yet? Oh very much. Head
on a swivel oh man, that's scary. Yeah, formative years.
What are you gonna do?

Speaker 3 (49:52):
You know, we all come from somewhere and look, I'm
but for the grace of God and a couple of
things like that. You know, I'm not here, but exactly
we live to tell your tale. They get to mock
bad speeches by head coaches. No, so you played through well,
I mean, I don't want to beat up on your guys,
so we'll take it more universal here. Yes, yes, thank

(50:12):
you in terms of what it means right in a
locker room, because a guy could be great on the
on the grease board, yep, could be great on the
chalkboard and everything else, but you don't get that level
of confidence instilled when they speak. What how do you
remedy that disconnect?

Speaker 6 (50:31):
I think the leaders in the room can carry carry
your team more than the head coach gave and raw
ross speeches. Right, So that's my mentality and I think
a lot of a lot of guys mentality that are
in the locker room. I think there are also situations
where you need your head coach to be the leader.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
But I mean, like in this case, I mean, how
much standing do you lose? I mean, even if it's
temporary for something like that.

Speaker 6 (50:54):
Well, i think they've seen enough of him to know
that he's probably not that speaking anyway, so fair enough,
so there could be such a wations of them being
used to that. So we're just getting the first glimpse of.

Speaker 4 (51:04):
We're getting the eye rolls. That's the other thing they
put out the eye rolls exactly carried that.

Speaker 3 (51:12):
That's the thing that bewildered me even more. It's like
you had the opportunity to curate this, however you wanted
to a clip from three positional meetings down the hall
where Buddha Baker's leaning in like it's interesting, Yeah, he's
fired up. Instead, you got guys, look at r Will
you believe this? Yeah, that's that's let me do who

(51:34):
was the editor. Let's figure that out first, can we
figure it out? But it's another example of the ineptitude. Yeah,
of the Arizona Cardinals squad. Like just because you got
rid of Cime and and look met him here draft night,
nice guy whatever.

Speaker 4 (51:50):
Did not do a good job. He didn't, like we
have to just call what it is in Kingsbury did
not do a good job. That was not good. So
it's gone.

Speaker 3 (52:00):
But like you still have the vestiges of the organization
and we know like stories for years of how things
have been managed from Neude from the ownership on down.
And you had the career of Larry Fitzgerald, a shining beacon.
You had JJ Watt for a spell. You go back
to Kurt Order, you guy like Buddha Baker, right who people,

(52:22):
I think you got to see him play when you
when you got him in some of those afternoon windows
against the forty nine or whatever. There was an appreciation
for him the last two years. I think it took
some time for that reputation to build so it could
be done. But then you go when you sabotage yourself
like this to where you're already the laughing stock because
people already go, oh, they're taking obviously already, and then

(52:46):
you put this up. It's like you just want to
be in on the joke. Are you already been notified
that Friday was your last day? So I'm putting this
up a larger series though, like it wasn't.

Speaker 4 (52:59):
A on off, Like I like to tell of what
you just said there, Yeah, I'm do.

Speaker 5 (53:05):
You know what?

Speaker 4 (53:05):
I've watched this.

Speaker 3 (53:06):
I had just sit in thirty of these damn meetings
and this was the most interesting thing.

Speaker 4 (53:11):
He said, take it.

Speaker 3 (53:12):
Take this pretty unbelievable stuff. Hey, coming up next. You
think that's crazy, I mean that's one level of speech.
You and I and and I think part of America.
We're gonna bring you in and give you a big
hume because if you ain't seen this the story of
