Speaker 3 (00:30):
Greenies welcome in hour three of the program. No Jason
Smith tonight in his steadar Guy Rich Hornberger. Here's in
the National Football League. He's a man of multimedia. He's
a multimedia sensation dominating down in San Diego. You hear
him here on Fox Sports Radio's weekend Countdown to Kickoff
as well as Red Zone Radio. I'm Mike Carmon. I'm

(00:52):
usually the guy yelling at Smith and trying to keep
him in check each night. Here live from the ti

you feeling. It's a long day for you, buddy.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Loving life. I've been up since four am Pacific. You know,
we're almost rounding the clock here. I'm fine with it.
Though I'm pretty close, I'm not quite. It was about
a five point fifteen wake up call for me. So
we're rallying. And it's a beautiful thing because you know,
that means I've had a lot of coffee. It means
it's coursing through the veins nily caffeinated radio show. Right now, I.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Still keep going through. And I tapped the microphone, going,
how do we not have a coffee sponsor?

Speaker 5 (01:42):
No?

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Or a taco sponsor?

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Oh, we need tacos and coffee.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yes, we're a beverage sponsor, all of these things. We
are your late night show for gluttony here on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
And you have a flamethrower. It takes it to a
whole other level.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
It's the only way to put the perfect seer on
any of the meats or frankly veggies for the vegans
vegetarians out there, I've done that too. You want to
put the final seer at the final char On that
you know that asparagus or zucchini or even carrot, that
that you're you're looking at, nash On, I'm telling you,

(02:23):
kissed by the flames of a fifteen hundred degree flame thrower, vegetables,
they'll never taste the same to you again.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
There you go, nicely done. Now, the Texas Rangers were
looking to take the flamethrower for the third straight time
to the Houston Astros, and he said, not so fast.
Joining us now on the hotline, John Paul Morosi, our
body from MLB Network does some NHL work. He has
become a Lions expert. We'll have to get his pick
for the game this week. He is a Michigander and

(02:52):
he's there live in Fadix. At John Morosi, leave out
the h because mom said so. At John Morossi on
Twitter JP. They battled back for one night. Get the
best of Schurezer. How are yealing today?

Speaker 6 (03:05):
Well, good evening, gentlemen. I would say this that the
right now, the Houston Astros have the Texas Rangers right
where they want them. There you go, not in Houston.
It's a good situation for the Astros to win ball
games on the road and Listen, the Astros have done
this so many times, whether it was falling down three

(03:25):
to nothing against Tampa three years ago than coming all
the way back to force a game seven. Of course
the twenty nineteen World Series, when every game was won
by the road team. Nothing surprises the Astros in the postseason,
and we saw them come out early on. They had
a great game plan against Max Scherzer. Schurezer is still
not quite himself right now, it seems like to me

(03:48):
at least, and Christian Xavier as we saw it again tonight,
Javier in a big game, especially in October. My goodness,
he was locked in tonight AL two Ben other Homer,
So we've got a very interesting ALCS ahead.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, it was only four for twenty six coming into
the game against sure's your lifetime rich.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah yeah, yeah. I mean, and look, I'm just glad
that we don't have a sweep on our hands here.
I'm glad to see a little fire and a little
vim and vigor from the Astros because I mean, we
could end up seeing that on the NLCS side, I
hope not. I mean, the Phillies look red hot right now,
but what do you see how this Diamondbacks crew, and

(04:29):
I know that you were live for this game. We'll
get back to this game that was just played tonight
in this series that you were observing tonight. But my
focus is on the Diamondbacks because it's an upstart, ragtag
group of rebuilders that all of a sudden find themselves
in the Championship series. What do you make of the
d bac.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
JP he's hate watching from San Diego. Don't let him
pool you, Okay.

Speaker 6 (04:50):
All right, Well, it's so very interestingly rich. I would
say this that there are more than there's more than
one path to get to the NLCS, and you don't
have to spend lavishly on superstars and then give them
all extensions and hope that it all fuses together into
cohesive group. Because the Padres that worked out pretty well

(05:10):
for them last year, not so much this year, Whereas
the d Backs are very much a homegrown group supplemented
with some key guys and really impactful trades. I look
at the move they made to bring in Lord of
Scuriel Junior and Gabrielle Moreno from Toronto in exchange for
Dalton varshow that deal has paid immediate dividends. Zach Gallen

(05:32):
was a very, very wise trade acquisition. Merril Kelly was
signed here after he pitched in Korea for four years,
so they've brought in players through many different ways. They're superstars,
a homegrown player in Corbyn Carroll they've already signed to
a long term deal, a magnificent player who's led the
National League in triples and twenty five hovers and fifty

(05:53):
plus stolen bases. But to me, guys, what they've got
to do is find a way to get back to
running the bases that aggressively. The d Backs did not
even attempt to stolen base in the first two games
of the series. Admittedly they had very few opportunities to
do so. They're on base percentage was below two hundred.
Corbyn Carroll was on base three times, but they've only

(06:16):
had two extra base hits in the entire series so far.
So they really have to get things going. I think
they're very excited to be out of Philadelphia in that
raucus atmosphere. They're very excited to not have.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
To I think we just I think they just took
him down. That's it. He was trying to talk about
getting him back into the series, and just like that,
Look what you did rich the.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Power and the strength of Philadelphia Phillies fans. They banned
together as soon as he started speaking ill of that
storied franchise. I mean they took him out. We're worried about.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Tickets as low as fourteen bucks for this one, so
an opportunity to get to the ball Yeah, no, yeah,
tickets are always has fourteen dollars.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
I do not want to hear that. I'll tell you what.
I'm down downtown Phoenix right now. There's a lot of positivity,
at least around my immediate environment. I'm seeing plenty of
d backs signs and shirts around, so I think that
people will show up tomorrow. But I am a little
a little troubled by the fourteen dollars. I would say
this though. It is, of course a weekday, on a

(07:27):
school day, middle of the day. It's going to be
an earlier game here, so I understand all those reasons.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
It's a tough one, you know, because we've talked about
it philosophically, and me I'm always for recognizing the business
of everything JP. Just we get to a league championship
series and seeing that start time, just I get a
little uneasy. Am I wrong?

Speaker 6 (07:50):
Here's the thing, though, and I can kind of go
both ways on this topic, because I understand what you're
saying about wanting to have a full ballpark. But one
of the things I've always heard as long as I've
covered baseball in the playoffs has been these games start
too late. What about the get about the kids who
want to watch the games? And so now there are

(08:13):
certainly in Philadelphia. My goodness, this is the best news
in everybody's third grade classroom, is that the game starts
at five o'clock Eastern time. You get home, you get
a little early dinner, enjoy your mac and cheese, and
watch watch the Phillies with your parents. I mean, that's
that's awesome. So that they're good in Philly. And then
the d Backs fans here in Arizona school because out

(08:34):
of two thirty you missed the first inning or two.
Hope that there's not a Schwerber home run or a
Harper home run that you missed there, and then get
home and cheer on your team. I'm all about this
is this is kids Day at the NLCS.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Look at you, Yeah, yeah, it is for the kids,
you know. Hey, speaking of the kids, A bunch of
kids homegrown talent running around that Arizona Diamondbacks roster. Yeah, okay,
would it surprise you? Are there any surprises left in
this postseason? Would it surprise you if the Diamondbacks won

(09:06):
a World Series? Or is it possible to see a route?

Speaker 6 (09:12):
Well, I'll say this, rich, it would based on the
way the first two games went, it would be a
surprise to see the Phillies lose this series. You'd have
to say that it'd be a surprise. It can certainly happen.
And believe me, I've covered enough playoff series in enough
playoff games that just when you think a series is
going one way, to think again, because here comes momentum

(09:33):
in the other direction, and it can happen very quickly.
I've covered playoff series where the road team, I think
it was the road team won every single game. This
was a division series back in twenty ten, covered the
I didn't cover the World Series in nineteen, but obviously
I watch it along with everybody else where. The road game,
road team won every game. So you can see things

(09:54):
that surprise you in series that turn on a dime.
I was the guy who famously declared to remarkably she
decided to marry me. But to my then girlfriend now wife,
when she was wondering when I was gonna be able
to actually hang out with her in Boston after Game
three of the ALCS in two thousand and four, I said, Ah,
don't worry about it. The Yankees will sleep them tomorrow.

(10:16):
I said that I really did, and we got married anyway.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
So, Asa, I mean your prognosticating abilities there, I'm gonna
be just in that week.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
Man.

Speaker 6 (10:27):
I'm only good on the Lions. We'll get to that eventually.
The point is here, guys. Would it be a surprise
if the Phillies lost this series?

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (10:36):
I would. But the d Backs again, they've got a
path here. The next two games are much more heavily
involved by the bullpens. The d Backs bullpen is as
rested as you can be because they haven't had to
throw a lot of their main guys in the last
couple of days, so they're good to go to me.
The Diamondbacks, they need to get Carol and Marte active

(10:57):
early in the game on the basis and then let
that good run of right handed bats Tommy fam and
Walker and others let them try to go to work
against left hander Suarez. There's a path there, one hundred percent.
I mean, it would not surprise me at all to
see the d Backs win Game three. I think winning
the whole series will be a challenge, but this this
series is a long way from over.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
To your point about the rest in bullpen, how aggressive
is lavool Love tomorrow we have to be, I mean well,
but I mean in terms of, you know, the bullpen
management just right.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Off the jump, right.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
I think Brandon Fott probably if he if he gets
through four innings, that's that's a very good start in
my opinion. If his if his line is four innings
to earned runs, he's done his job. He's given them
a chance because this team has been the Phillies have
been so hot that they were there today a little

(11:52):
bit took the infield. Didn't even hit on the field,
to be honest, they were just they had to just
kind of come in, get get used to the environment
a little bit, and then go out have dinner and
get ready for tomorrow. I mean they're locked in. The
Phillies are feeling pretty good and they should and now
it's just a matter for the Diamondbacks finding a way
to just keep them off balanced for a couple times

(12:13):
through the lineup with fot on the mound, and then
if they can do that, ring in the relievers see
a heavy dose of Ryan Thompson and Ginkle salf Frank
who was able to get into Game two. And then
certainly you've got Paul sewalld Laatee. So I think this
team overall the Dbacks already the roadmap is there, and
the roadmap involves I think no more than two times

(12:34):
to the lineup for young Brandon fot.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Okay, so we're looking at a live bug in Arizona.
On the NL side, Astros shown some life battling back
from a two to zero start in there. Ers, when
you think about the World Series, and I know you
call this straight and I know that you're not rooting
for anybody or any matchup in particular JP, but just

(12:58):
from a pure matchup stamp to your eye and your
your expert baseball QT, of the four teams left, what's
the best matchup in the World Series.

Speaker 6 (13:10):
This will sound entirely, entirely unsurprising, probably, but it's the
same one that we had last year. I really believe
that I think Houston is a team that that just
is still polarizing years later, and and yet have a
lot of names that we know and people who have

(13:30):
strong followings in terms of strong opinions around the country
and around the baseball world. You'll have Verlander, I mean,
who would not want to see in terms of a
neutral observer, justin Verlander versus Bryce Harper match up with
Game seven or the World Series on the line. Generational talents,
and the Phillies have multiple All Stars, obviously potential Hall

(13:54):
of Famers on their on their roster, different positions. The
Diamondbacks are they can still spoil this for sure. And
the Rangers, listen, they still have a two to one
series lead. But I think that we saw with Scherzer
tonight that there are some vulnerabilities there for the Rangers
and they're gonna have to really rely, you know, Evaldi
is gonna need to be immense for the rest of

(14:16):
this series. And it's like the Houston Astros. It'd be
like how worried if if the San Antonio Spurs in
the in the heyday of Duncan and Parker and Nobili
and ri if they were ever down three, two or
two to one, were they ever really worried? I mean,
they might they might not win every series, but they
never seemed worried. And that's and that's the vibe I

(14:39):
get with Houston. They're just not worried that they they
never get worried, and they shouldn't because the moment is
never too big.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
For them, all Right, they gotta just make mention. Dusty
Baker says he's got his Game four starter, and then
he asked if the Rangers had name theirs. When informed
they had not, he declined the name the Astros Game
four starters. So gamesmanship from the veterans. I love it,
but that's what.

Speaker 6 (15:02):
It should be.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
No, look, I love it and use it. That's right, absolutely,
and looky i'd be remiss, but I didn't also make
mention of that home run that Alvarez was robbed of
in the sixth inning. I thought that was going to
be the catalyst for the Rangers.

Speaker 6 (15:17):
Unbelievable. Yeah, that was. It was a great play, and
obviously Josh Young a pair of two run homers. Tavaris
is just an exquisite defender in center field. There's a
lot of talent on both sides, and obviously out of
last carc I think one of the plays that we
need to talk about a lot. Is Michael Brandley going
all the way into the gap to take extra base

(15:38):
changes the game right there if that ball falls in.
So just some really cool moments in this game to
talk about it. I think Dusty this is not his
first playoff series, nor is it Bochi's first playoff series.
And this is where when you got when you have
a series at two to one and there's a little
bit of uncertainty, who's going to start Game four on

(15:58):
potentially both sides get ready because it's gonna be entertaining.
And that's where the Diamondbacks are one win away from
making this interesting. Because game four, if both teams are
thinking bullpen game, it's a coin flip. You just you
never know how it's gonna go. And so that's why,
really and truly Arizona is one game away from this

(16:20):
becoming a very different series.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
JP no analysis. What's the score of Lions Ravens.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
Detroit Lions twenty eight, Baltimore Ravens twenty four.

our Fox Sports Radio studios here Rich, We've we've had
all our monitors going right. We had the Las Vegas
Aces win the w NBA Championship. We just watched the
Astros beat the Rangers, and we had a car chase

(18:41):
that lasted about an hour and a half that has
now come to a conclusion.

Speaker 4 (18:45):
Yes, yes, guns are drawn, they're waiting for the driver
to emerge. Now, how how did you know what? I
looked down for a moment because I have ke cal
Los Angeles pulled up on my on my screen. Out
did did he just? Was it a tack strip?

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Yeah? We think that is the case. Yeah, the back
left tire looks like it is uh toast as is
uh deep and it's not playable.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Now you go.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Now they're zooming in from skycow.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Yeah, that'll do it right.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
Yeah, they took about the spike strip. I wanted to
see a couple of pit maneuvers. I really was hoping
when he went into the gas station briefly that he
would fill up and just say hold out. I called
time out, Yeah, I called time out.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
We were talking about how he passed by Jane the Bee,
and I'll tell you right now, one of those wanton
boxes of the mini tacos, the loaded mini tacos, wouldn't
mind that.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
I think.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
I think he just now inspired someone to go run
and find that down here.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Now we need tacos rich.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Yeah, I suddenly my my debit card was suddenly in
my hand, just like that. Who knew? Who knew? But
we'll see. Hey, one of the guys, we were just
talking about the team, the Miami Dolphins. Now what they've
done offensively, winning a couple of shootouts and playing some
big offensive juggernaut kind of performances. Yeah, they got slapped

(20:10):
around by Buffalo, but you figured you'd have a bit
of a letdown after a seventy point beat down of
the Broncos. You had that great game to get things
started against the Chargers. All of this, but you've watched
different heroes. Tyreek Hill is the staple to a tongue
of I Loo. We've gotten to see him do a
couple of his tai Chi moves a couple of times,
back spins and whatever away from from rushing defensive lineman.

(20:35):
But other heroes have stepped up. Talk about a Chan,
talk about Raheem Mostert. They've done this all without Armstead
on the offensive line. He's on injured reserve, one of
your best offensive linemen. Yet you've been able to make
this work. But the inevitability is there whenever we have success.
We were talking about the forty nine ers a little bit.
Brock Purdy gets the dreaded s word attack him, and

(21:01):
someone tried to do that earlier talking to Mike McDaniel
of the Miami Dolphins, and they asked the question, well,
related back to Tua.

Speaker 5 (21:09):
There are some folks who believe that many quarterbacks in
this scheme with you as the coach, with Tyrek and Jalen,
maybe even many many quarterbacks would excel, would flourish near
the top of the passer raider leading m VP candidate,
What if any pushback is their relative to waiting on

(21:30):
a hold.

Speaker 7 (21:30):
On Christmas podium over? My answer to that would would
be who the f cares? Because it's there's it is
a team, we're we're working together, and I know one
thing of coach stuff. A long time, I haven't seen

(21:53):
people do what our guys do.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
Guy, he's done a much longer deep dive into different
component parts of running an offense. But he's got the
look on his face like he wants to just jump
through the reporter asking the question r because the guy's
fumbling his words. Yep, trying to get it out because
you look, it's like, just spit it out, man, you
want to call him a system quarterback, Just get to

(22:19):
it right, Just say, hey, anybody can come into here
and perform that's the theory of your offense because you're
such a genius. Because really, he's doing everything he can
to congratulate McDaniel. But McDaniel's clutching his lectern and he's
staring like it's the death stare right, the I can
melt you from where I am, and it is the
Halloween season, so why don't we get that as part

(22:41):
of a Saturday Night Live skit. Pete Davidson hosted this
last week. I'm sure he'll come back for a McDaniel
cameo to make that a reality for my Halloween dreams here, Rich,
but the response, I think McDaniel, he's endeared himself to
a lot of folks. You know, the little outtakes on
the practice field, pre game, whatever else. But here's just

(23:02):
a great example of your head coach going, what are
we talking about here? I don't care.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
We're winning well and this is this is what good. Well, Actually,
let's let's break head coaching into a couple of parts.
Head coaching, you need to be a good decision maker.
And I would say that Mike McDaniel, albeit a relatively
short sample, he passes the smell test. I think he's

(23:27):
a pretty good decision maker. I also think that a
head coach needs to be a great communicator and somebody
can build trust and build relationships. And this is just
example one million, maybe it's one million and five of
Mike McDaniel really doing what is necessary to empower his

(23:50):
players with his trust uh and vice versa. You know,
he knows what he's doing. He knows that this is
going to go viral or a very he's viral in
the market. It matters the most which is in his
locker room like because Tua gets to hear that now,
and Tua continues to to understand, Well much has been

(24:11):
said on the outside. Everything he's heard from Mike McDaniel
himself in their personal conversations or from what he's heard
Mike McDaniel say the media about him has been overwhelmingly positive. Yeah,
I mean, and the other thing about it is who cares?
Is right? Tom Brady for years, even after Super Bowl victories,

(24:35):
was called the system quarterback, but he had hardware dangling
from multiple fingers. So who cares? You think?

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Montana or birthday boy Steve Young? I think he's birthday boy.
Did they care? No, they don't care. Actually, Steve Young
popped in my timeline. Maybe it was for something else,
probably an autograph signing, knowing my my sports memorabilia world
that going. But the point is, actually he was born
on October eleventh, so I'm just a couple of days late.

(25:03):
But the idea being that Bill Walsh had had this
system and everything that emanated from there, you had great
players or whatever, does it matter. No, those guys are
regarded as two of the best to process because they
still have to process it. Whatever the head coach is,
the system is, you still got to go out and
win and win meaningful games. And remember, it wasn't too

(25:24):
long ago that people were wondering if Tua was going
to be there right right, were they going to go
and replace him with one of these Was Brady gonna
come there right that whole ownership or which.

Speaker 4 (25:34):
By the way? Which by the way, I mean now
Tom Brady. There was about a ten yard or ten
yard ten year run with Tom Brady where there's no
question he was at the height of his game. He
was inarguably the best at his position. I guess you
could you could argue one a to Peyton Manning at

(25:56):
times depending on the year, but well in the regular
season anyway, Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly correct. But my point
being like he was in actuality one of the best
doing it. But if they brought in Tom Brady as
his career is waning, as he's winding down his career,
I mean, is he was he is? I mean he
was he was playing in a system that benefited him

(26:18):
in Tampa Bay. He wasn't the same Tom Brady he
was during the twenty teams in New England. So was
he a system quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when
he won that championship. Look, I mean again, it's this
idea that that's some sort of insult that reporter, And
no offense to anybody who's never played football, and no

(26:40):
offense to anybody who doesn't understand the quarterback position from
inside the ropes, because I understand that is that's a
select few that gets to see it up close in person,
but from the position that snaps the ball to the
quarterback on every single play. I got to view some
of the most brilliant human beings on the planet diagnose

(27:01):
things in real time. And let me tell you something,
you have to be like a rocket science scientist level
of intelligence to do it well the majority of the time,
Like Tom Brady and Philip Rivers, guys who I got
opportunities to talk to in the meeting room and on
the field and watch in real game speed, watch them

(27:21):
get the ball to the right guy. You know, sixty
five to seventy percent of the time. It's otherworldly. It's otherworldly.
So yeah, you could call Tua whatever you want. As
long as Mike McDaniel keeps talking the way he's talking,
the Miami Dolphins will have no problems unless Tua gets hurt,
which I completely understand if this member of the media

(27:44):
decided to ask, hey, you know, there's this heavy reliance
on Tua, but he's been fragile in the past. Is
that a concern. Mike McDaniel answered the question anyway you want,
but asking him if he's a system quarterback, you pray
for a system quarterback. You pray for to a tongue
of ilo. If you're a head coach, you pray for
a Brock Purdy. If you're a head coach, you pray

(28:05):
for Matthew Stafford, who was considered an also ran and
a stat pattern for years out in Detroit. I mean,
look what happens when he linked up with a great
head coach. He became a Super Bowl champion. You pray
for guys like that who can get the ball to
the right people the majority of the time. And Mike
McDaniel was appropriately pissed off at this guy for asking

(28:27):
the question.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Yeah, I look at it. You know, the stafford you
bring out me is always interesting because he was a
guy that had many a conversation you and I had.
The conversation before he showed up as a member of
the Rams was he was always the guy regarded as
the quarterbacks quarterback, right, if you asked any of these guys,
Aaron Rodgers would be, whatever you think of anything else,
Aaron Rodgers said, that was the quarterback that he always

(28:50):
would point outways of how he loved to watch those
offensive sets and watch that guy go to work, and
so many other quarterbacks would cite that watch. When the
Mannings do a broadcast of Rams game, they sit there
and all they do is is just stole praise. Oh
they marvel the whole time of what he does and
how he processes.

Speaker 4 (29:11):
He diagnoses. I mean, it's it's like watching it's like
watching ap calculus done by uh by by uh Matt Damon.
That's right by Matt Damon. Uh because it's you know,
by somebody who's at a doctorate level. Like you know,
they go back to school and they play amongst the

(29:31):
you know, the kids who are you know, doing the
the stuff that looks hard to the rest of us.
But they just have an otherworldly grasp of it. Like Now,
don't get me wrong, I don't want to heap too
much praise onto it. He's still relatively early in the
process in terms of being an NFL quarterback, and due
to injury, it's even lessened his ability to you know,

(29:54):
play at game speed and be on the field for
all those snaps. Assuming health, though, he is on track
to be one of the more electric ball distributors in
the NFL. And last I checked, one of the biggest
criteria of playing quarterback at any level is being able
to distribute the football to the guy who's open, and

(30:15):
very few can consistently do that without throwing it to
the defense an awful lot. Tua is on the right
side of that ratio.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
Well, do you go back to his beginnings last year, Right,
he was putting up some ridiculous numbers before he got hurt. Right,
But as soon as the injuries pop up, and obviously
it was a grizzly injury at that, that remains with us.
The last point I just wanted to make my coaches
because it's an opportunity to go take a swipe at
Eberflus and how you can really mistrust an organization for

(30:45):
how they answer questions when they refuse. There you go
start singing it, Here you go flu Are you shaking
violently and foaming at the mouth while you do that,
because that's the only way that works. But the idea
when he had that dismal prescott and he's had many, oh,

(31:05):
but certainly the one trying to explain or dodge the
questions about the departed defensive coordinator basically just saying I
am the captain. Now they've now hired an advisor to him,
but there's been no talk of what happened to that
coordinator since. But when asked all about the Chase Claypool situation,
and maybe folks were able to dodge this one before

(31:27):
he was unceremoniously dumped. Now he's a member of the Dolphins,
and we'll see what he re emerges as if anything
down there but an absolute disaster in Chicago and they deactivated,
told him not to come home, and did even come
to the facilities or come to the game. And then
he answered twenty questions or should I say tried to

(31:49):
sidestep and give him the old razzle dazzle like he
was Richard Gear in Chicago here. I'm gonna just try
to obfuskate and dance around this, but Chicago media just
kept going no, no, no, really, what's going on here? Did
you keep him home or not? Was it his choice
to stay away or not? Just give us an honest answer.
That's how you lose what's left of a fan base

(32:10):
that has any belief in you whatsoever, as you flow through.
As opposed to McDaniel, who looked like he was literally
ready to fight for his guy, he's Rich Ornberger. I'm
Mike Carmon here, Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smith Show with Me,
Mike Harmon, No, Jason Smith tonight. At Is it just
at Ormberger? I keep saying that Rich Ormberger?

Speaker 4 (32:29):
No, no, yeah, it'sger on X or Twitter whatever we
call now.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
Until they start making you pay for it and then
we all migrate at doctor Rich? Is it doctor Rich?

Speaker 4 (32:39):
Well?

Speaker 3 (32:39):
I look, did you get that for your use of
the flamethrower or your acumen of dissecting offense?

Speaker 4 (32:46):
My friends on social media called me doctor, but you
can call me just Rich.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
Thank you, Okay, thanks Rich. We're brought to you by

around of what we have going on in our sporting universe,

(33:10):
we turn it over to Monty blagyas.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Doctor Ornberger.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
That has a good ring to the title you want
to ascribe to yourself there, manzi, Oh, that's a lot
of pressure. I don't know.

Speaker 8 (33:21):
I definitely not doctor No, like.

Speaker 4 (33:25):
Maybe maybe Moncey Bolangos esquire. I like that. I like that,
yet get a lawn at law.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
I do like to argue, so that works.

Speaker 4 (33:35):
That works a lot, Fellas.

Speaker 9 (33:37):
The Astros have taken Game three of the ALCS against
the Rangers. Wow, he five was the final score, Jose,
I'll do a homer for the Astros in the third inning,
but Texas still leads a series two to one.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
Max Schuerzer had a rough fouting.

Speaker 8 (33:55):
He pitched four innings, gave up five hits, five earned runs.

Speaker 4 (33:59):
He struck out four.

Speaker 8 (34:00):
But it started rough, and you know the Rangers are
sworn able to come back from it. In the WNBA,
we got back to back champions for the first time
since two thousand and two, as the Las Vegas Aces
barely beat the New York Liberty seventy to sixty nine.
They were led by Asia Wilson, who had twenty four
points and sixteen rebounds on the ice. The Senators beat

(34:21):
the Capital six ' to one, and the Red Wings
topped the Penguins six ' three. In the NFL, the
New York Jets are trading wide receiver Nicole Hardman back
to the Kansas City Chiefs, back and forth, back and forth.
Rams running back Hirand Williams has an ankle injury. He
is expected to miss multiple games. Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey
returned to practice today, less than three months after having

(34:42):
Meniska surgery for a training camp knee injury. Head coach
Mike McDaniels says that he's cautiously optimistic that Ramsey could
be back before the Dolphins Week ten by and the
NFL announced a three year contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell.
It'll be good through twenty March of twenty twenty seven.
And this pursuit fellas did you see it was a lady?

(35:04):
It was It was a woman.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (35:06):
You know, equality for all.

Speaker 3 (35:09):
Everybody can be equally stoopid behind the wheel of a car.

Speaker 4 (35:15):
No, there is that feeling though, is it always has
to be a guy because just guys are in general dumber,
make worse decisions.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
Shirtless guy running from the police, right, I mean I've
been conditioned to think like that for years.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
No regirts, tattoo somewhere on the chest or.

Speaker 3 (35:36):
Yeah, I know, sure for sure?

Speaker 4 (35:39):
So uh yeah, girl power?

Speaker 3 (35:42):
How about that? Manzi wants to claim that one?

Speaker 6 (35:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (35:46):
Oh I us do you find her on Twitter at
over on x and find me over at swollen Dome.

Coming up, we continue our third of the season review
and we have the award for the negative side of things. Yeah,
we went off positive last time. Now, well, who's going
out with the wash or the trash? If we want
to be an old head? Who's that? We'll talk about

(36:28):
it next here on Fox Sports Radio.

Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smiths Show with
Me by Carmon No Jason Smith Tonight, Rich Hornberger in
instead coming up in about ten minutes, We'll start getting
into our good, bad, the ugly through six weeks of
your National Football League. Why because we like metal stands,
but like I like to invert it rich where most
people do top fives and let's celebrate everybody. Naha, na

(37:52):
na na. I like doing some hate watching too, so
we'll do some of that. If you like using Devin

you can't with Discover cash back debit to checking account

(38:14):
member FDIC. Now everybody gets into this run through six weeks.
Now you're trying to jockey for position, as it were,
at least that's how some in local media markets would
have you. In some national pundits of well, you know,
now it's the tank time. It's like, well, normally this
would be a little bit early. There's some reports from

(38:36):
your former team, the Patriots, with their extensive injury report
this week that you know, some in the front offices
would love to see the losses continue to pile up
so you actually can go and make a run at
one of these quarterbacks. Okay, that's fine. In Chicago, it
was presumed that this was the case, even though you

(38:56):
have Justin Fields, and what's been interesting rich In, I'm
convinced most folks have never watched a full Bears game,
and certainly there have been some embarrassing clips coming out
about their offensive line from this last weekend's game against Minnesota,
where I defy you to tell me who they were
attempting to block in the schemes. White Hair is the

(39:19):
guy who's been the main culprit. But it's been an
epidemic there for going on six weeks. Not to say
that Field doesn't hold the ball too long at times, etc.
But there's just the start back in Chicago, because look,
let's face it, if you played for the squad, someone's
gonna have you on their radio show or television show.
So you've got a lot of former Bears coming out going. Wait,

(39:41):
I'm gonna get rid of Justin Fields to bring in
Caleb Williams. You're at astute observer of the human condition
and football acumen. I mean Justin Fields where he's at
at this point, and what we've got a body of
work to Caleb Williams compare contrast, Well, here's the deal,
other than him being younger.

Speaker 4 (40:01):
Well, and that's the whole crux of the story here
Justin Fields. We've learned that is he look Is he
a standout amongst his peers in the NFL at the
quarterback position, No, not by any measure. But can he
play at this level? Yeah? I don't know. If he's
necessarily a franchise quarterback. I hope, I hope he turns

(40:24):
into one, because, like we were talking about earlier, with
some of the depressed offensive numbers we've seen over the
past bunch of years in the NFL, I think a
lot of that has to do with players like Justin Fields,
young quarterbacks taking into draft not developing either quickly enough
or injuries getting the way of developing quickly enough and

(40:45):
having a hard time playing at this level. So, you know,
focusing on him in exchange, you know, via Trader. Otherwise,
for Caleb Williams, if this team really does hit the
skids this season, you're gonna be doing this all over
again with another quarterback who's unproven at this level. So
it could go gangbusters and you could have a Justin

(41:08):
Herbert on your hand, who it feels like, in spite
of bad coaching, you know he can deliver some wins
or you could end up with a Johnny man Zep. Well,
maybe not quite as bad as a Johnny Manzil because
there was some writing on the wall when he left
A and M in the first place. But you could
have a bust. You could have a Tim Tebow. It happens,
you know. You could have amazing college quarterbacks get to

(41:30):
the NFL and really really struggle. We've seen it before.
We've seen locks people who have been regarded as the
Lock of the century, the Lock of the decade, the
lock of you name the amount of time struggle, and
that could be Caleb Williams. I'm not necessarily counting on it.
You know, there have been people talking about this this
kid for a very long time, and I respect the

(41:52):
opinions of many who say that he is as NFL
ready a quarterback as they've seen in a long time.
But as we know, as you progress to this next level,
I mean, there's no fair dodging anymore. It ain't college football,
and guys get found out and so you're gonna change
out justin fields for another unproven commodity at the NFL level,

(42:15):
It's not going to guarantee better results.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
Yeah, I think that's the thing. That's been the most
confusing for me. Right, whenever we do these generational can't
miss whatever it's like with a lot of the players,
Williams in particular at USC, the offensive firepower that is there,
and we can go player to player and go through
history with it. You know, the difference in the separation

(42:39):
that your receivers have playing for a USC or go
back to in certain big time college program here is
so much different than the NFL. Yeah, right, in terms
of squeezing the ball into a receiver who's maybe not
gaining that level of separation, which is when you start
getting into the analysis dissection of say Brock Purdy and

(43:03):
guys like that that came from you know, places where
he had to make plays right, right, And it takes
nothing away from the stats and the physical aptitude and
nobilities of Caleb Williams. It just you know, we we
try to go through this and we see every snap
and try to go with the fine tooth comb and
so for for justin Fields, it's kind of like those

(43:25):
guys that were part of the Jets and these others,
like how much of it is just organizational that you
don't know what to do with a guy, right, rather
than just saying, hey, go out there and throw the
ball out there and do some great things well, And.

Speaker 4 (43:38):
We're talking about potentially, if an organization brings in a
Caleb Williams, you're also assuming they're going to bring in
a brand new head coach, and so potentially another untested
quantity at the front of the organization, potentially and almost
guaranteed a new offensive coordinator with that new head coach,
or potentially an offensive head coach who's gonna call his

(43:59):
own play. I mean, for as much blame as you
want to lay at the feet of Justin Fields, does
Luke getzee get none does? Does the struggles the offense
have had are none of them blamed on the offensive line? Like,
there's a lot more symptoms to the overall illness of
the Chicago Bears than just poor quarterback play, which I'll

(44:20):
admit at times it's Justin Field's fault, sure, sure, but
I wouldn't I wouldn't label him as the only symptom.

Speaker 3 (44:28):
Yeah, on the the blame pie, I mean, he certainly
gets a pretty good helping as we get towards our
holiday season, holiday holiday holiday, But the the idea that
there's not a bunch of other things. I still want
to know what happened to the old defensive coordinator. Yeah, yeah, disappeared.
Nobody said a word about it.

Speaker 4 (44:46):
All of a sudden. It was like that'd be I
rated his house and then everybody goes, no, no, they didn't.
And then they went, yeah, but he's got to go.
He's done. And then they went okay, and that was it.

Speaker 3 (44:56):
Yeah, now they've hired a defensive advisor. It's just a weird, weird,
weird place. Rich Ewenberger in for Jason Smith tonight and
I'm Mike Harmon. Hey, if you like using debit over credit,
