There is still soccer, and judging by how many people
that I heard, you know, outside my window today screaming
after Argentina's come back up, people are still people are
still watching the World Cup. Still, it's still an event,

I dig that on a Tuesday you had a lot
of folks just kind of hanging out watching a game
from nine to eleven Pacific times. Yeah, that's just fantastic.
You know, we heard a couple of screams. I think
they were on the we're getting cheated side of things.
But we got plenty of times to talk about that.

You know, it's fun to hear, like when you when
when something when you know everybody is watching a certain
event and you hear the screams out the window, And
my first thought was, boy, everybody's taking off from work today.
There's nobody's working today.

Hey national holiday in the US, Hey extend that July
fourth weekend just a little.

Bit louge Like, I don't think there's a lot of
people that are so died in the wool Argentina fans
from Argentina in my neighborhood. But I'll take some time
off to watch the games. The way I heard those chances,
I'm like, people are just kind of hanging out. Nobody's
going to work today.

Well, I mean a lot of folks are still working
working from home, and I wanted to use the air quotes.
We do have cameras, so yeah, yes, working from home,
So that was a good excuse to do so to
watch the Argentina and Egyptian match, I mean that was
that was a hotly contested, lot of big moments, a
lot of big, big opportunities, and two huge stars at

the forefront.

Now you got a question, Frostburg, what what's up, hey, Jason? Yeah,
is a Christian polistic still elite? He is? I don't.
I don't know that elite was ever something he was.

Oh okay, well, and that's case. We're gonna score three
goals on you, you know, first for the polistic though,
we have to tie this up.

Now the day after for the United States, and I've
seen some I mean, this was the day where I
think the shock got past everybody last night, the stunning
way in which we lost as awful as we played,
knowing how well we had played all the way through
the World Cup until last night. Now everybody's just mad
right now, everybody's mad, and we've got this sucks and
we suck and we still suck at soccer, and this

is all everybody's just made. We had a great couple
of weeks where we played really well and we had
a bad game last night. Now everything bad. But if
you want a real now that the emotion is done,
if you want to know the real way we should
go forward with with soccer, the United States right where
you are right now for the men's national team, and
I know watching today watching a two nothing advantage that

Egypt had slip away because Argentina just wouldn't be denied.
They were down to nothing and still they just said, no,
we're going to win this game. And you saw a
lot of boy. I wish the United States would have
shown this fight. Wish they would have shown this fight.
And I get it. I completely get that. Now. If
Egypt scored their two goals because Argentine threw up on themselves,
you don't know what that does to a team mentally.
But it was too great plays for Egypt to score,

and they probably should have had a couple of more,
but var steps in the way. So I understand everybody
being upset about the United States and we still suck
at soccer. There's been no forward progress anything else. But
you want to just be realistic, right, and this is
the right take about soccer. Men's soccer here in the
World Cup, and we watched the best teams now play,
(04:58):
we wonder how far away we are. Think of the
men's national team as a baseball team that has gone
as far a football team or a basketball team, doesn't matter.
That has gone as far as they can with their
current crop of players. And okay, they didn't get as

far as they wanted to, but now it's time to
make some changes right now. It is it dire no
and I get that. People want to say, well, we
still can't get past the round of six team, we
still can't do this. Okay. First thing I want to
say is remember where we were four years ago. Okay,
understand where we came from four years ago. That's the
first thing I want to say is go after the

World Cup four years ago? What were we talking about?
Greg Burholter is terrible. He's an awful coach. Nobody wanted
him around. He was awful. You had the controversy with
Gio Rena and the families didn't like each other, and
it was a youth soccer thing. Then you had stuff
with with Burholter and his wife and it was an
absolute mess. The US men's national team was in the
absolute gutter four years ago, the gut. Nobody wanted the job.

There were stories they would want to pay anybody to
take this job. No one's gonna take it. But Pochettino
takes the job. Pay him a lot of money, and
what happens. No one was expecting a lot in this
World Cup. I think we walked into the World Cup
and people thought, well, we're hosting it, it should be great, No,
we are hosting it, but the expectations were we still
are working our way back from where we were in
(06:23):
twenty twenty two. Now where do we sit after what's
going on? We have the right coach, right, Pochettino's the
right guy because now we're talking about soccer, we're talking
about going forward. Clearly he has gotten the guys to
buy in as best as he can. What did we
see yesterday? Yeah, honestly, and this is the big take.
I'm kind of done with the Golden generation and it's

time to move on. It's time to now get rid
of those players that you've maxed out on and bring
in more of what you need for twenty thirty and beyond.
If you're doing the old hey everybody's available. But these
are the guys I would keep right like you're doing
baseball and basketball, Like, hey, if you call, as long
as the Knicks keep Brunson and Cat, we can trade it,
right if you want to do that. Balagan and Tillman
(07:07):
should be the only definitive holdovers. They're twenty four. They're
part of the new generation. Balagan is an elite scorer.
Tilman looks like he can be an elite player if
you want to get rid of the other guys, okay,
because we've seen enough of Polisic and dest and Robinson
and all of these guys and okay, yeah they were Okay,
are they good enough on a global stage as we saw? Yeah,
(07:30):
we got pretty far, but we still have some work
to do. But this is a natural thing. This is
not something right, Oh, it's not working, break it up, starty, No, Okay,
we got this far. We went with the generational talent
as far as we could and saw that. Okay, maybe
it's not as generational as we thought. So now there's
going to be turnover.

We've had a couple of World Cups, two to three
World Cups of some of these same guys now and
it's time for new blood and to get new players in.
It's almost like what we watch the women's team do
when they had to get out of the Rapino and
Morgan era, and that was a very difficult thing to
do because that was the most successful era that we
have seen in women's soccer. And now winning the gold
medal the way they did, being built on the triumvirt

of forwards that are all dangerous. Now. Emma Hayes has
turned this team into something pretty quick. So okay, but
understand that that's where we are United States. We're not
far away. This is now just okay, we went with
these guys. Now it's time to augment what we have
and bring in the new level of players. We get
a little bit younger, little bit more athletic in some places,
and that's the team now we look forward to for
(08:30):
twenty thirty. It's a natural progression of sport. This is
not oh, there's a problem with soccer. That's not in
any other sport. No, most teams will tell you we
went as far as we could with this talent, so
it's time to let them go and let them hit
free agency and we bring in new guys. We go
sign new guys, We bring guys up from the minor leagues.
That's really where the United States is at. That's where
they are looking into twenty thirty. Most important thing is

make sure po Chattino comes back. I'm even okay with
him going to Europe for a couple of years and
coming back when it's time to start qualifying again again.
I'm okay with that. He's the right guy. Realized. These
are the conversations we're having now compared to where we
were four years ago. So honestly, this whole we suck
all of this. Yeah, I get it. We didn't win,
and we're used to winning. We don't like to lose
in the United States. I don't like to lose.

But we're in such a better place than we were
four years ago, and now it's time to say this
is what worked, this is who we're gonna be going forward,
and now it's just the evolution of getting there for
the next time.

rebuilding the women's team far different than the men's. Okay,
we're still trying to go from crawling to walking over
here on a grand scale versus, hey.

We aged out with these guys. We are the pre
eminent program in the world, and now we just need
to tweak and we have to recognize that that phase
is done. Everybody's got to take a big hug, take
one more group picture, and let's bring in the neck.
But that's still you're talking about the United States. They
need to just increase. The men's team just needs to
increase where they are. Women's team was, Hey, we got

to turn over and keep the highest level possible. That
that's a difficult thing, but so you at least know
you have players to draw from. Here, you're talking about
going away from generational players, generational players for the US
who are good, not great on a global scale, right,
because that's the thing we're watching and the amount of Hey, Brazil,
(10:58):
you know, I'm sorry, Belgium got lucky or whatever, and
we just had a bad night. No, No, there's still
a gap like we were not good, we were not
ready for this moment. And that's Belgium, right, they were ninth.
Ninth to seventeenth is huge, and then what's the chasm
between ninth and seventeenth and sixty? Hang on forty three?

Fast did I come up with forty I wasn't even
trying to do the real math because because there's a
bigger algorithm at place there. But the limit does not exist.

you're still trying to figure out. And there were a
lot of great discussions going on and something we've been
talking about behind the scenes a lot. You know, my

daughter playing youth soccer, your daughter playing youth soccer clubs,
and the expenses and the travel whatever, it all comes
into you know, it's it's fuzzy math, but but it's
part of a larger equation in terms of the system
and getting in and graduating them and keeping them involved
in soccer, et cetera. And that's part of the larger United.

States systemic question that needs to be answered going forward.
We've got this great start, and it was great to
get a nation behind you. For three weeks. Soccer took
over right, and this was a fantastic We had watch parties,
You've got all the going just to collecting stickers. The

Panini stickers became a phenomenon. Then I get a OSGA
because I want to put it on my laptop, like
all of these things that people got on board, and
you got to figure out how to sustain that because
coming out the way you went out, you mentioned the
Mexico England game. You mentioned Argentina's return today like there

was no fight, and I think that's what ticked Americans
off more than anything. It's not that you lost for
to one, it's that you looked in competent in doing so,
and you didn't show any.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Level of fight. But we watch. The thing is, though
I was okay with losing if the main way we
lost that game was mentally, and I'm okay with that
because you can get past you can get past that
mentality and losing. It's hard to get past the physical
mentality or the physical aspect of losing when it's like
our players just aren't nearly as good. Did you watch?
(13:24):
I'm telling you, well, Freeze, I said, you watched it again.
The mental mistakes, the mental mistakes are much easier to
overcome because that's okay, that means we're getting where the
right players are coming up. We've gotta find the right
one shrunk in a moment. It's not, but it's But
it would be worse if it was physically we just
couldn't keep up. That would be worse. That would show
(13:47):
you that the gap is way bigger than and you
think it is. But the fact that it's a mental gap, okay.
That that that's something you can fix. That's fixable, the
physical gap. Buts we just don't have the horse the
low post. Nobody. If I'm racing you and I have
three horses, and you have three horses, and your three
horses are pretty good and my three horses are really good.
(14:09):
If my three horses mentally just don't have it and
you beat me, I'm okay with that. But if I'm
racing three horses at are slow, I'm like, why I'm
even doing this? Well, I mean, my horse, my horse
is not even close to as fast as yours. At
least I know my horse is here. They're fat. I
just got to make sure they don't go to the side,
they don't try to get a snack, they don't try
to chase something. The butterfly is here. I gotta make
sure I remember that.

I know It's weird, I know we weren't expecting it,
but quite honestly, the disallowed goal. Today we're all about
the Egypt Argentina thriller. Egypt up to nothing in the
eightieth minute and it looks like Argentina's going home. All
the said Argentina fans were crying, and then Argentina just decided, no,
we have an extra gear and we're gonna give it
(15:40):
to you right now. Three goals in the next fourteen
minutes and we didn't even need overtime. It was an
insane onslaught by Argentina. But what's become the conversation, of course,
has been the officiating and var review. And we talked
about this a little bit last night and I said,
this is the effect of the Balligan red card is
(16:00):
that now.

Var and officiating overall.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Is gonna be more in the spotlight, and it's gonna
be tougher to get away with stuff. It's gonna be
tougher to officiate with an agenda when you have the
VR official whose job is not is to say, hey,
we're gonna give you some screenshots of a play. We
think it's a red card. That's not really what you're
supposed to do. I said last night, you're gonna see
(16:23):
it differently, and now after today with Argentina and Egypt,
that is absolutely going to happen. But I've said in
the past, when you want change, when it comes to
replay review in sports, something's got to happen, either in
favor or against an extremely popular team. Right, I always
go back to we didn't have replay in Major League Baseball.
(16:45):
Yankees have met Sunday night game a three run home
run by Carlos Delgado that was a home run that
was ruled foul ball. What happened We got replayed the
next week. No, we got replayed the next week in
Major League Baseball. We're gonna look at home runs looking
fair and foul. And now we have the system that
we have the fact that this overturning of Egypt's goal

that would have given them a to nothing lead happened
the way it did, like, this is a worse This
is a worse, more egregious mistake spotlight controversy than flow.
Baligan was right because with Balligan it was just okay,
does this rise to the the status of a red card? Right?
(17:25):
At least you could say that was the question. Now
we get into a little bit more into the weeds
when it's well, we're buzzing down. The official didn't see it.
This second goal that was scored by Egypt happened when
a foul was called just outside of the eighteen and
Egypt's end of the field. Egypt breaks out with the ball,
they go all the way downfield and a great pass
(17:47):
to go up to nothing. And so you're talking about now,
this foul happens, Egypt gets control of the ball and
about fifteen seconds go by. So here's a that happened
one hundred yards away from the goal, where twenty seconds
at least go by before they say, oh, we're looking
(18:09):
at that for a foul. Right now, that when I
see something like this, and I see all of what
the Egypt coaches and the players said afterwards that that
FIFA wanted Messi to move on. They wanted Messi in
the next round. I can't disagree with that because that
clearly was a decision that was made simply because Egypt
scored a goal to make it to nothing. Right now,
this is a play that was kind of a ticky
(18:30):
tack play at the in Egypt's end. If you want
to call a foul, okay, right, But I thought it
was TICKI tak. I've want to call a foul, okay,
And I get that the referee probably didn't want to
do it unless it was a big advantage. I didn't
want to do it unless you unless you're playing advantage,
which is a call in soccer. And I get that,
and you know, sometimes officials want to go past that.
(18:50):
But at some point you got to either say okay,
we're done with that. You can't just wait, We're gonna
let Sometimes you let the play play out for a
couple of seconds where if it's an advantage Jenet looks
like Egypt is breaking out odd man break, you blow
the whistle, okay because this look, this is now advantage
for them because now they have a two on one
in the middle of field. But you let this play
go all the way all the way down the field
(19:11):
and Egypt scores, and then you say, no, we're looking
at this for a foul. Like when I when I
see people say yeah, they wanted they wanted MESSI to
move on, and all these things about how bad the
officiating is and wanting and wanting a certain result. I
can't say no because I can't understand how you let
the play go that long and then you decided to say, oh,
now we're going back to look at You only went
back to look at it because they had a goal.
(19:32):
That's the only reason you went back to look at
And if you wanted to stop it for advantage, you
could have done that way before. At some point you
got to say, Okay, the play is just going on
right now. And again I go back to the very beginning
where it wasn't really that egregious a foul to begin with.
I mean, when that happened, I said, wow, really, it's
all a FIFA I did. Did President Trump call and say, hey,
(19:53):
wait a minute, let this play go, Let this play go,
Let it go, let it go. Oh wait, bring it back,
bring it back. We're out of the World Cup. We
need MESSI to move on. People watching the games, coming
to the games, all this out. Let's let's let's make
sure this goes on and Messy and Argentina still have
a chance. I mean, that was just when I saw
that player strick in my head and I said, wow,
you think NBA officiating is bad? Every time Wemby doesn't
get called for a flagrant FOULM and to kick at somebody.
(20:14):
I'm gonna push somebody down. No, Wenby doesn't get the
call man, that's got nothing on what we've seen so
far in FIFA this tournament.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Well, but every time it comes back to Argentina, right,
And the big thing about the ball again suspension of
the suspension was oh, that's the US. So it was
the outside of the soccer world coming in and invading
the sanctity. And that was the thing that really ticked
me off. I'm gonna stare at the camera. I'm gonna
(20:42):
yell at this right now. The twenty four to thirty
six hours that I saw leading into the ultimate US
loss to Belgium, about how the sanctity of the game
had been stayed by the reinstatement of ball again. It's like,
are you kidding me? We're talking about BEIFA here, right,
because this is another example in this Argentinian Egyptian game
(21:06):
of so FIFA that you just watch it and go, yeah, okay,
that's that's what they do. And all the pundits and
all around the globe of how the sanctity and the
history had been so tainted by Baaligan's rich statement and look,
the nebulous article twenty seven. We can all just kind
(21:27):
of shrug and nod and go okay, cool here. Look,
I thought it was what we would call a softer
foul if you called it, But there is a second
Egyptian player there ready to pick up possession as soon
as the Argentinian players dispossessed of the ball, so and
clearly he gets into his feet, So if you don't
(21:50):
call it there, it's like all right, you could say, okay,
soft foul, and then it goes the entire length of
the field like no, no, no.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
We've watched plenty.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Of matches where I was like, all right, but before
you've even reached the midfield, plays blown dead time and
time again. And there were plenty of other circumstances and
instances throughout the game of here's a slap to the face.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Oh yeah, here's a you know, that was a true
wwe and a raak of the face. I remember wh
people used to do that break of the face.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Legitimately, it's like it's on the sideline. It's like it's
not anything getting physical. It's like literally the guy extends
his arm fully to connect with the Egyptian player's face.
Like there are just so many instances where you're like, wow,
that's bad. There's a four minute super cut making the
round that has been wiped off of Twitter and all
(22:38):
socials repeatedly throughout the day, and then a new account
created to repost it of what do you think of this?
And it's all super slow bo and take from it
what you will. But there's another call where Salah has
the ball, he gets dispossessed, but then his feet are
taken out from under him, and that led immediately to
Argentina's third goal. So people going, well, could we at
(22:59):
least have gotten a down pige in and an announcement
of a review there, as well as several other instances
in this game. But when the Argentina, including the FIFA
president right and his response of how he was sweating
it out and everything at the last game, that the
the appearance of improprieties and the allegations certainly aren't going
(23:22):
to be quieted after this game.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
No, And then that's why now that this is going
to be known as the var tournament. Right when you
look back and say, okay, let's look at the twenty
twenty six World Cup, what were the dominant stories And
we're obviously we're getting there, we're going to find out
who wins. Well, well, the number one story is going
to be Balligan, right, This Egypt Argentina story will be
another one, polistic sucking. But it's all well that's another one, yes,
(23:45):
but it's all going to revolve around officiating and that
that's become a default because you know, look, everybody's become
an expert on it. Look at it all through the
NBA playoffs. What was the dominant storyline officiating? It's always
the dominant storyline.

Now when we talk about in the w NBA like
grab a sport, like it's all.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
It's become the dominant thing now is officiating, but specifically
with VR and review. Now, so many things that have
tilted games or kept teams on the field that shouldn't
be on the field. This is not hey, here's a
foul that's missed right before halftime. Here's a player getting
his jersey grad that they missed. The fouls like, you
can let those go, but when it's when it's a
(24:21):
play that that affects the the out directly affects the
outcome of the game. Now, we've seen now at least
two or three instances where this has happened, and it's
happened very publicly with the two biggest countries in the
World Cup United States, which is hosting the World Cup,
and Argentina, who were the defending champ with the number
one player in the world for the past twenty years.
So yeah, now that and that's going to be a

good thing, is it now? VAR, Because it's it's it's
still morphing into how they're going to USEMBER. This is
still a pretty new technology for for FIFA in the
World Cup, has only been around for a couple of
World Cups. Like now, I feel good that at least
going forward, there's going to be more regimented, more more
of a a guideline and not just whatever the the

VAR officials are at the whim of because there's more responsibility.
You can't just say, wow, we took that goal off
the off the board for Egypt and Argentina moves on.
Whoa whoa whoa, whoa whoa whoa. You could potentially do
that if it's Morocco and Switzerland, or if it is uh,
you know, Canada and Senegal or something like that. But when,

but when it's this big a deal, when it's the
superstar nations that are in the middle of it. That
doesn't go away. So at least I can say, as
bad as it was, it's going to affect change and
how var is used and adjudicated in the game.

I mean, you would like to see the level of consistency,
and this match really becomes the epitome of that because
you're moving forward, right like, this is the last of
this stage. As we go through, it's Argentina. I would
have you note as I was watching the opening and
all the introductions here on the replay on FS one,
you had two French officials.

And one in Belgium uh in the in the v
ar booth for this one.

that I heard, you know, outside my window today screaming
after Argentina's come back up, people are still people are

of folks just kind of hanging out watching a game
from nine to eleven Pacific times. Yeah, that's just fantastic.

You know, it's fun to hear, like when you when

watch the Argentina and Egyptian match, I mean that was

lot of big, big opportunities, and two huge stars at

Now the day after for the United States, and I've
seen some I mean, this was the day where I
think the shock got past everybody last night, the stunning
way in which we lost as awful as we played,
knowing how well we had played all the way through
the World Cup until last night. Now everybody's just mad
right now, everybody's mad, and we've got this sucks and
we suck and we still suck at soccer, and this

is all everybody's just made. We had a great couple
of weeks where we played really well and we had
a bad game last night. Now everything bad. But if
you want a real now that the emotion is done,
if you want to know the real way we should
go forward with with soccer, the United States right where
you are right now for the men's national team, and
I know watching today watching a two nothing advantage that

Egypt had slip away because Argentina just wouldn't be denied.
They were down to nothing and still they just said, no,
we're going to win this game. And you saw a
lot of boy. I wish the United States would have
shown this fight. Wish they would have shown this fight.
And I get it. I completely get that. Now. If
Egypt scored their two goals because Argentine threw up on themselves,
you don't know what that does to a team mentally.
But it was too great plays for Egypt to score,

and they probably should have had a couple of more,
but var steps in the way. So I understand everybody
being upset about the United States and we still suck
at soccer. There's been no forward progress anything else. But
you want to just be realistic, right, and this is
the right take about soccer. Men's soccer here in the
World Cup, and we watched the best teams now play,

we wonder how far away we are. Think of the
men's national team as a baseball team that has gone
as far a football team or a basketball team, doesn't matter.
That has gone as far as they can with their
current crop of players. And okay, they didn't get as

far as they wanted to, but now it's time to
make some changes right now. It is it dire no
and I get that. People want to say, well, we
still can't get past the round of six team, we
still can't do this. Okay. First thing I want to
say is remember where we were four years ago. Okay,
understand where we came from four years ago. That's the
first thing I want to say is go after the

World Cup four years ago? What were we talking about?
Greg Burholter is terrible. He's an awful coach. Nobody wanted
him around. He was awful. You had the controversy with
Gio Rena and the families didn't like each other, and
it was a youth soccer thing. Then you had stuff
with with Burholter and his wife and it was an
absolute mess. The US men's national team was in the
absolute gutter four years ago, the gut. Nobody wanted the job.

There were stories they would want to pay anybody to
take this job. No one's gonna take it. But Pochettino
takes the job. Pay him a lot of money, and
what happens. No one was expecting a lot in this
World Cup. I think we walked into the World Cup
and people thought, well, we're hosting it, it should be great, No,
we are hosting it, but the expectations were we still
are working our way back from where we were in
(06:23):
twenty twenty two. Now where do we sit after what's
going on? We have the right coach, right, Pochettino's the
right guy because now we're talking about soccer, we're talking
about going forward. Clearly he has gotten the guys to
buy in as best as he can. What did we
see yesterday? Yeah, honestly, and this is the big take.
I'm kind of done with the Golden generation and it's
(06:44):
time to move on. It's time to now get rid
of those players that you've maxed out on and bring
in more of what you need for twenty thirty and beyond.
If you're doing the old hey everybody's available. But these
are the guys I would keep right like you're doing
baseball and basketball, Like, hey, if you call, as long
as the Knicks keep Brunson and Cat, we can trade it,
right if you want to do that. Balagan and Tillman
(07:07):
should be the only definitive holdovers. They're twenty four. They're
part of the new generation. Balagan is an elite scorer.
Tilman looks like he can be an elite player if
you want to get rid of the other guys, okay,
because we've seen enough of Polisic and dest and Robinson
and all of these guys and okay, yeah they were Okay,
are they good enough on a global stage as we saw? Yeah,

we got pretty far, but we still have some work
to do. But this is a natural thing. This is
not something right, Oh, it's not working, break it up, starty, No, Okay,
we got this far. We went with the generational talent
as far as we could and saw that. Okay, maybe
it's not as generational as we thought. So now there's
going to be turnover.

We've had a couple of World Cups, two to three
World Cups of some of these same guys now and
it's time for new blood and to get new players in.
It's almost like what we watch the women's team do
when they had to get out of the Rapino and
Morgan era, and that was a very difficult thing to
do because that was the most successful era that we
have seen in women's soccer. And now winning the gold
medal the way they did, being built on the triumvirt

of forwards that are all dangerous. Now. Emma Hayes has
turned this team into something pretty quick. So okay, but
understand that that's where we are United States. We're not
far away. This is now just okay, we went with
these guys. Now it's time to augment what we have
and bring in the new level of players. We get
a little bit younger, little bit more athletic in some places,
and that's the team now we look forward to for
(08:30):
twenty thirty. It's a natural progression of sport. This is
not oh, there's a problem with soccer. That's not in
any other sport. No, most teams will tell you we
went as far as we could with this talent, so
it's time to let them go and let them hit
free agency and we bring in new guys. We go
sign new guys, We bring guys up from the minor leagues.
That's really where the United States is at. That's where
they are looking into twenty thirty. Most important thing is
(08:51):
make sure po Chattino comes back. I'm even okay with
him going to Europe for a couple of years and
coming back when it's time to start qualifying again again.
I'm okay with that. He's the right guy. Realized. These
are the conversations we're having now compared to where we
were four years ago. So honestly, this whole we suck
all of this. Yeah, I get it. We didn't win,
and we're used to winning. We don't like to lose
in the United States. I don't like to lose.

But we're in such a better place than we were
four years ago, and now it's time to say this
is what worked, this is who we're gonna be going forward,
and now it's just the evolution of getting there for
the next time.

minutes and we didn't even need overtime. It was an
insane onslaught by Argentina. But what's become the conversation, of course,
has been the officiating and var review. And we talked
about this a little bit last night and I said,
this is the effect of the Balligan red card is

Var and officiating overall.

Is gonna be more in the spotlight, and it's gonna
be tougher to get away with stuff. It's gonna be
tougher to officiate with an agenda when you have the
VR official whose job is not is to say, hey,
we're gonna give you some screenshots of a play. We
think it's a red card. That's not really what you're
supposed to do. I said last night, you're gonna see
(16:23):
it differently, and now after today with Argentina and Egypt,
that is absolutely going to happen. But I've said in
the past, when you want change, when it comes to
replay review in sports, something's got to happen, either in
favor or against an extremely popular team. Right, I always
go back to we didn't have replay in Major League Baseball.
(16:45):
Yankees have met Sunday night game a three run home
run by Carlos Delgado that was a home run that
was ruled foul ball. What happened We got replayed the
next week. No, we got replayed the next week in
Major League Baseball. We're gonna look at home runs looking
fair and foul. And now we have the system that
we have the fact that this overturning of Egypt's goal

that would have given them a to nothing lead happened
the way it did, like, this is a worse This
is a worse, more egregious mistake spotlight controversy than flow.
Baligan was right because with Balligan it was just okay,
does this rise to the the status of a red card? Right?

At least you could say that was the question. Now
we get into a little bit more into the weeds
when it's well, we're buzzing down. The official didn't see it.
This second goal that was scored by Egypt happened when
a foul was called just outside of the eighteen and
Egypt's end of the field. Egypt breaks out with the ball,
they go all the way downfield and a great pass

to go up to nothing. And so you're talking about now,
this foul happens, Egypt gets control of the ball and
about fifteen seconds go by. So here's a that happened
one hundred yards away from the goal, where twenty seconds
at least go by before they say, oh, we're looking

at that for a foul. Right now, that when I
see something like this, and I see all of what
the Egypt coaches and the players said afterwards that that
FIFA wanted Messi to move on. They wanted Messi in
the next round. I can't disagree with that because that
clearly was a decision that was made simply because Egypt
scored a goal to make it to nothing. Right now,
this is a play that was kind of a ticky
(18:30):
tack play at the in Egypt's end. If you want
to call a foul, okay, right, But I thought it
was TICKI tak. I've want to call a foul, okay,
And I get that the referee probably didn't want to
do it unless it was a big advantage. I didn't
want to do it unless you unless you're playing advantage,
which is a call in soccer. And I get that,
and you know, sometimes officials want to go past that.

But at some point you got to either say okay,
we're done with that. You can't just wait, We're gonna
let Sometimes you let the play play out for a
couple of seconds where if it's an advantage Jenet looks
like Egypt is breaking out odd man break, you blow
the whistle, okay because this look, this is now advantage
for them because now they have a two on one
in the middle of field. But you let this play
go all the way all the way down the field
(19:11):
and Egypt scores, and then you say, no, we're looking
at this for a foul. Like when I when I
see people say yeah, they wanted they wanted MESSI to
move on, and all these things about how bad the
officiating is and wanting and wanting a certain result. I
can't say no because I can't understand how you let
the play go that long and then you decided to say, oh,
now we're going back to look at You only went
back to look at it because they had a goal.

That's the only reason you went back to look at
And if you wanted to stop it for advantage, you
could have done that way before. At some point you
got to say, Okay, the play is just going on
right now. And again I go back to the very beginning
where it wasn't really that egregious a foul to begin with.
I mean, when that happened, I said, wow, really, it's
all a FIFA I did. Did President Trump call and say, hey,

wait a minute, let this play go, Let this play go,
Let it go, let it go. Oh wait, bring it back,
bring it back. We're out of the World Cup. We
need MESSI to move on. People watching the games, coming
to the games, all this out. Let's let's let's make
sure this goes on and Messy and Argentina still have
a chance. I mean, that was just when I saw
that player strick in my head and I said, wow,
you think NBA officiating is bad? Every time Wemby doesn't
get called for a flagrant FOULM and to kick at somebody.

I'm gonna push somebody down. No, Wenby doesn't get the
call man, that's got nothing on what we've seen so
far in FIFA this tournament.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Well, but every time it comes back to Argentina, right,
And the big thing about the ball again suspension of
the suspension was oh, that's the US. So it was
the outside of the soccer world coming in and invading
the sanctity. And that was the thing that really ticked
me off. I'm gonna stare at the camera. I'm gonna

yell at this right now. The twenty four to thirty
six hours that I saw leading into the ultimate US
loss to Belgium, about how the sanctity of the game
had been stayed by the reinstatement of ball again. It's like,
are you kidding me? We're talking about BEIFA here, right,
because this is another example in this Argentinian Egyptian game

of so FIFA that you just watch it and go, yeah, okay,
that's that's what they do. And all the pundits and
all around the globe of how the sanctity and the
history had been so tainted by Baaligan's rich statement and look,
the nebulous article twenty seven. We can all just kind

of shrug and nod and go okay, cool here. Look,
I thought it was what we would call a softer
foul if you called it, But there is a second
Egyptian player there ready to pick up possession as soon
as the Argentinian players dispossessed of the ball, so and
clearly he gets into his feet, So if you don't

call it there, it's like all right, you could say, okay,
soft foul, and then it goes the entire length of
the field like no, no, no.

We've watched plenty.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Of matches where I was like, all right, but before
you've even reached the midfield, plays blown dead time and
time again. And there were plenty of other circumstances and
instances throughout the game of here's a slap to the face.

Oh yeah, here's a you know, that was a true
wwe and a raak of the face. I remember wh
people used to do that break of the face.

Legitimately, it's like it's on the sideline. It's like it's
not anything getting physical. It's like literally the guy extends
his arm fully to connect with the Egyptian player's face.
Like there are just so many instances where you're like, wow,
that's bad. There's a four minute super cut making the
round that has been wiped off of Twitter and all

socials repeatedly throughout the day, and then a new account
created to repost it of what do you think of this?
And it's all super slow bo and take from it
what you will. But there's another call where Salah has
the ball, he gets dispossessed, but then his feet are
taken out from under him, and that led immediately to
Argentina's third goal. So people going, well, could we at

least have gotten a down pige in and an announcement
of a review there, as well as several other instances
in this game. But when the Argentina, including the FIFA
president right and his response of how he was sweating
it out and everything at the last game, that the
the appearance of improprieties and the allegations certainly aren't going

to be quieted after this game.

No, And then that's why now that this is going
to be known as the var tournament. Right when you
look back and say, okay, let's look at the twenty
twenty six World Cup, what were the dominant stories And
we're obviously we're getting there, we're going to find out
who wins. Well, well, the number one story is going
to be Balligan, right, This Egypt Argentina story will be
another one, polistic sucking. But it's all well that's another one, yes,

but it's all going to revolve around officiating and that
that's become a default because you know, look, everybody's become
an expert on it. Look at it all through the
NBA playoffs. What was the dominant storyline officiating? It's always
the dominant storyline.

Now when we talk about in the w NBA like
grab a sport, like it's all.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
It's become the dominant thing now is officiating, but specifically
with VR and review. Now, so many things that have
tilted games or kept teams on the field that shouldn't
be on the field. This is not hey, here's a
foul that's missed right before halftime. Here's a player getting
his jersey grad that they missed. The fouls like, you
can let those go, but when it's when it's a

play that that affects the the out directly affects the
outcome of the game. Now, we've seen now at least
two or three instances where this has happened, and it's
happened very publicly with the two biggest countries in the
World Cup United States, which is hosting the World Cup,
and Argentina, who were the defending champ with the number
one player in the world for the past twenty years.
So yeah, now that and that's going to be a

good thing, is it now? VAR, Because it's it's it's
still morphing into how they're going to USEMBER. This is
still a pretty new technology for for FIFA in the
World Cup, has only been around for a couple of
World Cups. Like now, I feel good that at least
going forward, there's going to be more regimented, more more
of a a guideline and not just whatever the the

VAR officials are at the whim of because there's more responsibility.
You can't just say, wow, we took that goal off
the off the board for Egypt and Argentina moves on.
Whoa whoa whoa, whoa whoa whoa. You could potentially do
that if it's Morocco and Switzerland, or if it is uh,
you know, Canada and Senegal or something like that. But when,

but when it's this big a deal, when it's the
superstar nations that are in the middle of it. That
doesn't go away. So at least I can say, as
bad as it was, it's going to affect change and
how var is used and adjudicated in the game.

I mean, you would like to see the level of consistency,
and this match really becomes the epitome of that because
you're moving forward, right like, this is the last of
this stage. As we go through, it's Argentina. I would
have you note as I was watching the opening and
all the introductions here on the replay on FS one,
you had two French officials.

And one in Belgium uh in the in the v
ar booth for this one.

So I mean some some of that would they would say, well,

what nationality of official you put in the booth, it's

You just like you just get people from nations that
are not in the World Cup and don't even have soccer.
