is not without fireworks, as we found out today the
fight one punch fight. I guess that's kind of like
an octagon fight. I guess a one punch fight. Former
Heat teammates bam ade Bio and Tyler Herrow got into.

A physical altercation in Vegas earlier today in which ada
Bio threw a punch and struck Tyler Herrow in the
head area of This was first reported by ESPN Schamscherania. Now,
why did this happen? Why is Tyler hero trending?

This is not some random night in the middle of
the NBA season where he's got twenty five through three quarters, right.
Why guys like him and and and Alex Caruso trend
all the time? Why are they trending? I can't believe
they got zach Levine. Why is zach Lavine trending? Apparently
this goes back to the big trade that brought Giannison
to the Miami Heat a week and a half ago,

where Tyler Hero shared a graphic on social media and
social media is going to be the downfall of tyr
Hero on the story about players with the worst mid
range jumper conversion rates of the past year. Number one
on that list was Giannis. Number ten in the list
was mam at a Bio, his former teammate, who we
spent all kinds of time with, you know, Finals team

there in Miami a few years ago, and all of
a sudden, now, okay, now they're not teammates anymore. So
if that was it, that would kind of be okay. Well,
he shared this a little bit of shade. You don't know,
is this kind of fun thing like usually the Knicks
like to do with each other or is this a
serious thing? It turned serious when, according to reports, a
fan that Tyler Hero had been dming with over the

course of the past few months, a guy who I
think he identified himself as a guy who lives in
Canada or something that he was talking smack about at
a Bio and the money that he that he's getting
and he shouldn't be getting sixty million dollars a year,
you know about you know, for a guy that doesn't
play defense as often as he does. Basically, he was
a big back and forth and hero saying stuff about
at a bio that you know is not flattering. The

guy publishes the DMS right, well, this is a story
that's kind of been in the periphery the last few days. Okay,
and at a bio confronted Tyler herro at it earlier
today at a gym and walked up to him and
hit him once. Heroes got a little bit of a
tag under the eye and had to be broken up.
There was some stuff being yelled back and forth, and

now we have the great Miami Heat Milwaukee Bucks rivalry.
We didn't know we wanted Mike Harmon, but we're getting.

It just because he said, you guys can't hit a
mid range jumper.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
You take what you guys? What'd you guys fight over?
He took my girlfriend out on a date. What'd you
guys fight over? He stole my car and didn't tell
me what'd you guys fight over? He made fun of
my mid range jump shot ability and that is not
gonna happen. Man, You do not cross that rubicon.

He didn't show up at this basketball camp.

I mean there's a million other things, like he shared
a graph that had some unflattering business, i e. It
exposed the fact that I can only score in the
low post. Oh no, oh no, I mean I'd like
to think there were some other transgressions in chaos that
would get you to come to blows. But uh hey,

look if this gets people excited about Summer League. I mean,
we really haven't cared about Summer League other than these stars, right,
Caleb Wilson with a big game. We talked about aj
debonsa a little bit yesterday. I mean, we haven't been
this excited since Lonzo Ball and his band of Merriman
were taking over Summer League a decade ago.

Yeah, I mean, really, this is we're gonna, We're gonna,
We're getting into this where now. I mean, I think
that's just an easy thing, like oh yeah, okay, Lonzo
Ball's that LeVar Ball saying stuff about the Aaron Fox
and now that's cool. Oh we need something a little
bit more, uh, a little bit more subtle, a little
bit more twenty twenty six. Yeah, let's let's kick things
off with that mid range jump shot percentages list. Let's

get now, I gotta say, are all the guys in
the top ten now look at looking at Getty what
Tyler hero on this Is it just bam Adebayo or
since he's tenth, does he now have to watch out
that number nine? Number eight?

gonna watch out?

don't know, man, I don't know. No, it's pretty much
a hitless there's no question about it. And he's gonna
go Jim to Jim in the wee hours of the
morning and then he's gonna find you. I mean, look
what happens in Vegas. Was supposed to stay in Vegas? Nope,
jumps jumps.

These guys don't like each other, these former teammates at Beef.
I mean really this this, I mean, nobody walked out
with a black eye or no.

Tyler Harroll was doing interviews after Bam threw a punch
at me. Now here's the thing. So there's two big
takeaways from this, right, because this is just so silly.
Number one, and I was thinking about this because it
used to be. Right, you go back like twenty years
whatever it was. If two people had a physical altercation

and you know, or I had an argument, whether it
was over you know, finances or mid range jump shot percentages.
The guy that threw the punch was always the guy
you walked away, the winner, right, like, well, he threw
the punch, he was mad, and the other guy backed away,
and ah you you cowered away and he threw a punch.
You didn't throw a punch back. Oh yeah, that's the way,
you know, bam out of bios. But he's the winner.

But I kind of like the fact that here we
are in twenty twenty six where when this happened today,
the first reaction I think everybody has and this shows
you I think that we're growing at least a little
bit as a nation. Is that Oh man, here's a
guy that couldn't control his emotions. And when years ago,
when that would be something that would just get swept

under the rug, here's something where now out of bio's
the guy that seems like, dude, what are you doing? Man?
Really you're arguing over stuff you guys yell at you
other and you throw a punch at him. I mean, really,
you're arguing over stuff on the internet. You throw a punch.
You are not in control of your emotions right like
like that.

This is what my first reaction was.

Man, this is more embarrassing for at a Bio than
it is for Tyler Hero, even though Hero is the guy.
We'll get to him in a second, because he doesn't
escape nearly unscathed, but the whole physical confrontation of it.
Just thinking about how this this this story is consumed
now and how what we think about it than what
we would think about it twenty some odd years ago.
Where now, hey, it's not too much to ask guys

to be control of your emotions and not throw punches
when when something like this happens to you, guys are
disagreeing over something.

Well, but that's it. All those years ago, those stories
got buried because you didn't have access, you didn't have
social media, and people and people run into guys like Cham's.
The guys that were the beat reporters city to city.
They knew they got no access and the free meals
were all going to be turned off if they said
a word. Whereas now it's like, eh, here you go

go running in and say, hey, there was an altercation.
How much of an altercation? It's like what are you doing?
I don't know. Okay, that was an altercation.

Yeah, you got you this. You know the security guard, Hey, Stu, Yeah,
what's going on? A couple of guys are fighting? Who
is it? Well, it's a guy in a bucket hat
and that guy that scored eighty four points last year.

Wait Bam Mata bio and Tyler Harrow? Are you sure?
Speaker 1 (09:09):

I think those are the guys. I gotta get out
there and go, oh, it's over already.

Okay, all right, well, I mean really, like, you know,
I get you're arguing about this or whatever is said
back and forth, but be the guy I need to
throw a punch in a situation like this, I mean,
come on, man, Like, I gotta say that the stupidity
angle of that is only topped by the stupidity angle
of Tyler Harrow, who decided I'm gonna DM some random

dude about my teammate and about stuff going on, and
I'm gonna d I mean, really, I see this and
I go, well, I don't understand what goes through people's
minds sometimes, Like you're gonna DM a guy, a total
stranger that you don't know about your teammate and that's
just insane to me. I can't get people that have

this addiction and think social media is their friend and man,
and this is not even a guy that was saying, hey,
I love your game, You're awesome. This is the guy
that he was Tyler Hero was kind of feuding with
right over the course of the story, and you got,
I'm dming this guy my stuff about bamaa bio, you know,
will you talk about the scales of stupidity O. It's like, yeah, okay,
BAM's here. But then wow, man, Tyler Hero, he's what

you can't even see how high up he is on
that well, but you.

Get into gaming rooms or whatever, all of a sudden,
those are your buddies on the headset think about I mean,
so many others likes now he's had his issues in
the gaming rooms, right, I mean all these guys. So yeah,
it's not that far down down the road to be like,

you know, the enemy, what the friend of my enemy
and all those kind of things where you go through
the paces and you get the Spider Man meme when
it's all said and done. But yeah, Tyler Hero, I
was surprised that bam Adebayo and company didn't just figure
out what the graphic would be to show how weak
he was defensively and just put at them. I don't

know that he's bottom ten in the league, but he's
got to be pretty damn clothes.

Yeah sure, sure, sure, right.

So I mean, if you're Yannis and bam Adabay, you
can at least say we're tops on this list.

Just so you know, I just had that Tatiana Maslani
learned that lesson, and now Tyler here is learning that
random people want to do you have about my teammate, right, Like, oh,
what what goes through your mind about stuff like that?

Seriously, I can't. I can't understand the devotion and the
sense of responsibility or the just the non thinking of
it that people feel on social media where I can
do this, like social media is your friend, It's not

I just said, you know, holding up that lantern, going yeah,
this is just not going well. This is now, this

is how it ends. This is you know, I I
don't understand the that you think that I can. I
can send direct message to a guy I don't even
know about my teammate that I live with, that I've
been a teammate with for the past seven or eight years.
And this is what this is not well, but this
is not after the trade. This that this is before
I understand. I don't get Crank Cobs. I really don't man,

I really don't I and I don't know if I'm
alone on this, but I feel like, you know, obviously
the younger generation and gen Z and and you know,
the real lower end of millennials, you know, grew up
with social media being prevalented in their lives. Like you know,
they like gen Z especially, doesn't know a life without
social media. But still, I mean to I don't know

if I feel like, hey, I should be teaching lessons
on this or or just I mean, people just walk
into stuff like this blind and I go, this is
this is how you This is now what you're known
for because you decided to DM. Somebody who was then says, well,
I mean I had to make sure this got out.
You know, people need to know this. This is news.

Uh, you know, because of that, this is what you're
known for.

Like everything, Tyler Harris, forget about the bucket hat, forget about.

few days and there's like some sort of confrontation or involvement,
and we can make a movie out of it. Like now,
but make a movie like that like five minutes if

could probably get someone to green lighted for a limited
series that goes eleven episodes one to set it up,
and the countdown and all of the scenarios by by
which they run into each other and settle their beef,
or maybe they don't, and maybe it becomes the end

the super villains are together for sure, and it's on
a ship.

and you know, coming to America or not. What was

I'm channeling you with this question. The story this week
you saw that, you know, the ESPN story where Seth
Wickershram followed Sean Payton for a period of time head coaches,
one of the greatest.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
I sent Seth a message last night. It was so great. Oh, okay,
so great?
Speaker 1 (25:29):
All right, okay, So well, first of all, that's what
message did you send him?
Speaker 5 (25:35):
I thought out, great, Well, there's a book idea I've
always had. Yeah, I don't want to get too deep
into the study. I don't know if you guys ever
wrote read the book forty eight Minutes by Bob Ryan
and Terry Pluto, where Pluto and Ryan are following a
night and that it's a night in the life of
the NBA where Terry Pluto was covering the Cleveland Cavaliers
and Ryan was covering the Celtics. And so they did
(25:57):
a breakdown of the Larry Bird Celtics against the the
Ron Harper Brad Doherty Cleveland Cavaliers when they were in
sort of the early days of developing. It's a really
great look at how the NBA works and how it functions.
And so I've always wanted to do a football book
books like that and whether but it's hard to get
(26:17):
coaches to agree to that kind of access. And then
but Sean Payton was one of the few guys who
I got to agree to it. But it was trying
to find another coach willing to do it and sort
of break down an NFL game in book form, like
what is the thinking going on here? What are you
anticipating all the factors that go into a game? And
(26:38):
I thought I was genius and what I thought that
Steth did captured perfectly in the story. It's just it's
it's Seth. I mean, Seth's got He's one of the
greatest writers in America for sports writing today, him and
Right Thompson and a handful of others. But you know,
Seth was able to get inside the mindset and the
(27:00):
thinking the approach of a team going into a game.
And I've always just wanted to do that, sort of
amplify it and do it from both ends and then
describe the game, because again I wanted to do sort
of forty eight minutes. And so what I did, what
I sent to Seth is this is just it's awesome,
you know, like the story is awesome. That's long it takes,
(27:21):
you know, it's a good Yeah, you've got to have
some time proved out and you've got to focus on this.
But I thought it was just a great look into
the mindset of meetings where coaches think, how they describe things,
you know, the anxiety and the angst that goes into
what they do. Again, it's just brilliant work by Seth Wickersham.

The issues you've got to get coaches are so secretive
that they just don't they don't trust and they don't
trust that you're gonna keep stuff secret for a long
period of time. And that always been the problem with us.
So it's trying to find two coaches or are will
and participate. So there you go.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
All right, all right, now here's where I was going
to say, I was channeling you because I'm gonna give
The big thing coming out of this article was that
a couple of years ago, Sean Payton said he had
the idea of offering the head coaching job to Bill Belichick,
letting him be the head coach for as long as
it took him to break Don Shula's record, then he
would step down and Sean Payton would run the team again.
(28:31):
He would be the offensive coordinator while Belichick would get
the wins. And I thought about you because my first
thought was in your voice, I'm about try to do
in your voice and go And here's what you would say.
You would say, how much did Sean Peyton hate Don
Shula to make this something that he wanted to do?
Nothing from you?
Speaker 3 (28:53):

Speaker 5 (28:56):
No, I wouldn't think about it that way, come on line. Yeah, No,
it was Look, I give you credit for for, you know,
searching into my deep and dark past, because Donchella is
part of that dark past, because I had to cover
the end of that the end of that era. Unfortunately. No,
(29:20):
I think that that's I give him credit that mostly
that's a nod to Belichick, who he is, he's so
close to. I don't look at that one as a negative,
like you know, yeah, you know, I don't take that
as sticking it to Shula, although I can Yeah, I'm
sure there's some hatred there because Sula obviously didn't like Belichick,
(29:42):
especially at the end, and made the mistake of not
hiring Belichick when he was the young coach. So that's
on Sheilo as well. But I know there's no love
lost between those two. But I to me, Peyton, it's
more of a nod to fellow Check and just how
much he admires And because those guys used to practice
against each other, you know, during training camp, and they
(30:05):
would spend a lot of time together talking about stuff,
and you know, I think that you know, Peyton certainly
thinks of himself on the genius level of Belichick. I
wouldn't necessarily altogether agree with that, but yeah, he's not
far removed, certainly from from double Check. Right. That's how
I would do it. That's that's that's a really serious
(30:26):
answer to something that should have been a lot funnier.

downer of a storyline because he is the biggest star
in the game and I'm everybody hoping we would see
him in the All Star Game next week, we are not,
as Shoho Tani is not going to participate in the
All Star Game. He is dealing with knee irritation, something
that has bothered him on and off throughout his career.
(32:21):
He was supposed to pitch tonight, he is not. So
anybody who thought Otani was pitching and saw that, my goodness,
the Diamondbacks have eight runs. No Otani did not pick.
So he gets scratched tonight. But he is DH. He's
going to DH with the weekend series, but he's not
going to the All Star Game. Instead, he's gonna have
some quote interventions on his knee to put him in
(32:42):
the best position for the second half of the season. Basically,
his left knee's gonna get drained pain relieving injection in
LA on Sunday. Not going to expect or expect the
procedure to impact his ability to pitch after the All
Star break, but right now the Dodger's not sure when
that's going to be. So basically Otani knee irritation skipping
(33:03):
the All Star Game, which sucks. Instead, he's gonna have treatment.
This goes back to something that the Dodgers really have
to realize, and we've talked about this for a long
time show. Hal Tani's body is not a body that
is conducive to him going through the rigors of pitching.
(33:26):
As much as he has. It just isn't and we
talked about the Dodgers. The smart thing to do is
to be to make him a closer. Make him a closer.
He doesn't have to throw a lot of pitches because
we've already seen he's had two Tommy John surgeries, right,
a couple of UCL injuries. Right, he's got lingering knee issues.
When's he had lingering knee issues in the past, Well,
(33:49):
when he's been pitching, when's he had lingering knee issues
with the Dodgers, when he's pitched as much as he
has so far this year. I get he wants to start.
I understand this, but be honest, his body at this point,
you know, over the age of thirties, played a while,
he's pitched a while, he's hit a while. It's not
(34:10):
built to withstand the rigors of being a starting pitcher
in Major League Baseball, from the elbow to the knee.
And he's so valuable as a hitter. Obviously, he's a
you know, four time MVP. You need to make sure
you're getting the most out of him in his career.
And so far the pitching injuries have not kept him
out of a ton of big games, but it's kept
(34:31):
him out of games right, his time entire time with
the Angel Okay, well the Angels, he stay Angels think,
but when he goes to the Dodgers, he's been pretty
healthy for them. But the Dodgers, I think, as much
as he wants to pitch, as much as this is
something that he's done at what makes him the unicorn
that he is. He's thirty two now and the Dodgers
have to sit back and say, Okay, what's going to
keep him on the field for us the most? What's
(34:54):
gonna be the best thing we can do the rest
of his career for him for everything. He's not going
to give up pitching entirely, but maybe again, you make
him a closer where he's pitching sixty somewhat innings a
year instead of every fifth day. He's out there for
five or six and he's great. I mean, he's having
a phenomenal year pitching, right. I talked about him. I said,
he's gonna win the Cy Young this year. He's my
(35:15):
Cy Young pick in the in the in the National League,
and he and he is right there with what he
is doing pitching. But you want to make sure he's healthy.
And I don't think there's any more of a correlation
you can draw to. Okay, welly, he was a big
starting pitcher with with his with his big responsibility with
the Angels, a couple of injuries that knocked him out
(35:35):
right pitching. He couldn't do it anymore. This is the
first time he has started for the Dodgers, and first
half of the year. He's got to miss the All
Star break because he's got the knee. Knee injury has
come back again. Yeah, I get that. He's eight and
two as Era is one point seventy ninety again as
having a tremendous year right now. His whip is under one.
But you want to make sure Otani's there every day
(35:57):
for you, and DH has been fine. You have to
put him back on the field to be your DH
for the rest of his career. But pitching, you have
to do something. And look, I would say, I don't
know how much you could pitch again the rest of
the way, But yeah, okay, let's try you closing where
the rigors of throwing sixty SOMEHDD innings instead of here
he is at eighty five at the All Star break already,
(36:18):
and you're gonna get him up into one thirty one forty.
He hasn't had those kind of innings in a long time. Right,
The last time he won one hundred and thirty innings
was three He was still with the Angels when he
did it three years ago. I don't know that you
can do that to him again. So I think the
Dodgers have to make a really tough decision when it
comes to Otani.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
No, it's tough all around. But I mean, we look
at where they were at. The Dodgers have absolutely been
crushing it. They're losing tonight, although Otani did Homer uh.
So those that came to the game thinking they were
going to get in the pitch, well you didn't get that.
But he at least watched him tried around the bases,
so you got that little victory. But you're also looking
at a team that has been just hit with injuries
(36:57):
one after another, and you expect that when you play,
you know, an extra month each year, right as they've
done the last couple and even the years they didn't win,
they're going deep into the playoffs, you're going and playing
a lot of extra innings. And then obviously Otani uh
and his body, and we've chronicled his history of injuries,
(37:17):
but you've seen it creep up with the squad. You
haven't played a full team, a Dodger squad yet. And
I point to that specifically in the pitching department, because
you're still looking at a number of guys you're waiting
to come back off injuries and wishing, wanting, hoping, and
now here's another opportunity. And I think if you're the Tigers,
although you've crept back into competition and contention, you're still
(37:41):
looking around with Tarik Skooble going you know, we have
the golden Goose sitting here, and a team that can
give us a lot of stuff is very vulnerable right now.
And with Otani and this issue, yeah, you've got hard
decisions as to what the makeup is of your roster
going forward, but certain his future because you, as much
(38:02):
as he may want to push and think that this
is still where he wants going. Look, you're gonna acquiesce
in a in a lot of ways to whatever he wants.
You're also trying to make sure he stays in the lineup.
And while it's not affecting him, as he's only a
DH I say that you know only kind of italicized
(38:22):
or whatever the most important DH going since Harold Baines
that We're still sorry I had to do it since
earlier another guy whose career was brilliant and then the
issues popped up and precluded him from playing the outfield
because once upon a time they did keep track of, Hey,
this guy is really leading the league when it comes
(38:43):
to outfield assists. But for Sho heo Tani, if this
now becomes a degenerative thing or something that becomes an
issue where he's got to miss every couple of days
in the lineup, well now it starts to compound, and
you're not worried about what he is as a pitcher
performer five years from now. You're trying to win in
twenty twenty six. But the reality is you'll if you
(39:04):
let it go. You have no idea how much that
starts to compound itself. And as you get to September
or October, which are really the only months that matter
for the Dodgers, is he available to you? So yeah,
a week of rest at the All Star break is
all finding good, But how are you managing this going forward?
Speaker 5 (39:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (39:24):
I mean, look and I get that him closing, and
that's the whole thing. It's not just as simple. It's
a difficult thing. It's not just as simple as well
he can close, because you're worried about what do you
do to the roster, because if he comes in to close,
you lose the DH position and you have to manage
it a little bit there. So I understand that. But really,
(39:44):
you're bringing a guy in who is one of the
best pitchers in Major League Baseball. If you're bringing him
into close, Okay, you bring him into close and you
lose the DH position. Okay, you deal with that, right
if he's your closer, If he's your guy and he's
going to be closed out the World Baseball Classic, right,
if he's your clothes you're bringing him in with a lead.
You are expecting to walk away with three outs and
(40:05):
a win. How many says is he gonna is a
closer gonna blow over the course of year five? Maybe
if he does, right, let's just say he blows five games,
if he gets to keep the job, yeah that's sorry, show, Hey,
you're done. But like let's say he blows five Okay,
so then you lose the DH for however long you
go in the rest of those games. Remember putting a
runner at second base in the in the extra innings, like, okay,
(40:28):
I think the Dodger you could deal with that. I
think that's an acceptable outcome of Okay, if in the
games that show hey could blow, you could lose the
position there, Okay, I think you can you work it out.
I don't think it's something that suddenly, oh you're looking
at a loss yet. No, okay, so if you lose
a dh by, you lose the HBOT. It's okay. I
think the Dodgers can find a way around it. I mean,
(40:49):
baseball is built and predicated on failure, right, most of
the guys that come up are not gonna get a hit.
So if you have a situation where a guy's not
not gonna come up and get a hit, most likely
because you're gonna bat there in that position. Okay, all right,
so I agree, I get it. It's a bit of
a thing to figure out, but it's not that big
a deal.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
I do kind of dig the idea of it, and
then what's his walkout music? May that that becomes the
next part of the equation. I mean, you got what's
what's deed rule going to be playing on the order?
Speaker 1 (41:17):
No, no, no, doesn't he walk out to I Love La,
which is you know what they play after they win
games like that, be saying, hey, the game's over, and
here comes back.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
I did it. I right.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Hey, no, this is a bit presumptive, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Well, let's games over? No, I liked. I like if
they did that, that would be really cool because the
other team would get really pissed. Oh, they think the
game is over because show Way is in, and they
play it when he goes in, and then they play
it when they win.
Speaker 4 (41:40):
At the end, I'm in.

They just pick it up right where the music ends,
so they start the inning so in the three outs,
like you hear the song right from where it's right
from where it left off. Let's go back to the song.

I get that you want to do that. I get
that you want to keep him a starter. I understand that,
but boy, you're looking at trying to manage his career
where you're looking out for his body at this point
and the correlation what they have in common with here's
all these innings he's pitching. Here his big injuries, right

and so far this is more of a warning than
it is anything else because it looks like he's okay
but dealing with the knee situation before. And look, it's
not so bad that he's not dhing tonight. You don't
want it to turn into something worse, what you know,
more wear and tear on him. You know you're doubling
his innings pitch potentially the rest of the season, and
you know they're going into the playoffs, so it's not
gonna be well. Hey, September thirtieth, Otani he's got the
(42:43):
jacket on for the last time, waving to the fans, going.

No, I mean it's it's you're expecting a playoff run
in this at least two maybe three starts from Otani
over the course of the playoffs, probably more from him.

fight one punch fight. I guess that's kind of like

Heat teammates bam ade Bio and Tyler Herrow got into.

A physical altercation in Vegas earlier today in which ada
Bio threw a punch and struck Tyler Herrow in the
head area of This was first reported by ESPN Schamscherania. Now,
why did this happen? Why is Tyler hero trending?

This is not some random night in the middle of
the NBA season where he's got twenty five through three quarters, right.
Why guys like him and and and Alex Caruso trend
all the time? Why are they trending? I can't believe
they got zach Levine. Why is zach Lavine trending? Apparently
this goes back to the big trade that brought Giannison
to the Miami Heat a week and a half ago,

where Tyler Hero shared a graphic on social media and
social media is going to be the downfall of tyr
Hero on the story about players with the worst mid
range jumper conversion rates of the past year. Number one
on that list was Giannis. Number ten in the list
was mam at a Bio, his former teammate, who we
spent all kinds of time with, you know, Finals team
(03:19):
there in Miami a few years ago, and all of
a sudden, now, okay, now they're not teammates anymore. So
if that was it, that would kind of be okay. Well,
he shared this a little bit of shade. You don't know,
is this kind of fun thing like usually the Knicks
like to do with each other or is this a
serious thing? It turned serious when, according to reports, a
fan that Tyler Hero had been dming with over the
(03:42):
course of the past few months, a guy who I
think he identified himself as a guy who lives in
Canada or something that he was talking smack about at
a Bio and the money that he that he's getting
and he shouldn't be getting sixty million dollars a year,
you know about you know, for a guy that doesn't
play defense as often as he does. Basically, he was
a big back and forth and hero saying stuff about
at a bio that you know is not flattering. The
(04:05):
guy publishes the DMS right, well, this is a story
that's kind of been in the periphery the last few days. Okay,
and at a bio confronted Tyler herro at it earlier
today at a gym and walked up to him and
hit him once. Heroes got a little bit of a
tag under the eye and had to be broken up.
There was some stuff being yelled back and forth, and

now we have the great Miami Heat Milwaukee Bucks rivalry.
We didn't know we wanted Mike Harmon, but we're getting.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
It just because he said, you guys can't hit a
mid range jumper.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
You take what you guys? What'd you guys fight over?
He took my girlfriend out on a date. What'd you
guys fight over? He stole my car and didn't tell
me what'd you guys fight over? He made fun of
my mid range jump shot ability and that is not
gonna happen. Man, You do not cross that rubicon.

He didn't show up at this basketball camp.

I mean there's a million other things, like he shared
a graph that had some unflattering business, i e. It
exposed the fact that I can only score in the

to think there were some other transgressions in chaos that
would get you to come to blows. But uh hey,

look if this gets people excited about Summer League. I mean,
we really haven't cared about Summer League other than these stars, right,
Caleb Wilson with a big game. We talked about aj
debonsa a little bit yesterday. I mean, we haven't been
this excited since Lonzo Ball and his band of Merriman
were taking over Summer League a decade ago.

Yeah, I mean, really, this is we're gonna, We're gonna,
We're getting into this where now. I mean, I think
that's just an easy thing, like oh yeah, okay, Lonzo
Ball's that LeVar Ball saying stuff about the Aaron Fox
and now that's cool. Oh we need something a little
bit more, uh, a little bit more subtle, a little

at me. Now here's the thing. So there's two big
takeaways from this, right, because this is just so silly.
Number one, and I was thinking about this because it
used to be. Right, you go back like twenty years
whatever it was. If two people had a physical altercation

and you know, or I had an argument, whether it
was over you know, finances or mid range jump shot percentages.
The guy that threw the punch was always the guy
you walked away, the winner, right, like, well, he threw
the punch, he was mad, and the other guy backed away,
and ah you you cowered away and he threw a punch.
You didn't throw a punch back. Oh yeah, that's the way,
you know, bam out of bios. But he's the winner.

But I kind of like the fact that here we
are in twenty twenty six where when this happened today,
the first reaction I think everybody has and this shows
you I think that we're growing at least a little
bit as a nation. Is that Oh man, here's a
guy that couldn't control his emotions. And when years ago,
when that would be something that would just get swept

under the rug, here's something where now out of bio's
the guy that seems like, dude, what are you doing? Man?
Really you're arguing over stuff you guys yell at you
other and you throw a punch at him. I mean, really,
you're arguing over stuff on the internet. You throw a punch.
You are not in control of your emotions right like
like that.

This is what my first reaction was.

Man, this is more embarrassing for at a Bio than
it is for Tyler Hero, even though Hero is the guy.

Just thinking about how this this this story is consumed
now and how what we think about it than what
we would think about it twenty some odd years ago.

disagreeing over something.

those are your buddies on the headset think about I mean,

and all those kind of things where you go through

was surprised that bam Adebayo and company didn't just figure

you saw that, you know, the ESPN story where Seth
Wickershram followed Sean Payton for a period of time head coaches,
one of the greatest.

I sent Seth a message last night. It was so great. Oh, okay,

Speaker 1 (25:29):
All right, okay, So well, first of all, that's what
message did you send him?
Speaker 5 (25:35):
I thought out, great, Well, there's a book idea I've
always had. Yeah, I don't want to get too deep
into the study. I don't know if you guys ever
wrote read the book forty eight Minutes by Bob Ryan
and Terry Pluto, where Pluto and Ryan are following a
night and that it's a night in the life of
the NBA where Terry Pluto was covering the Cleveland Cavaliers
and Ryan was covering the Celtics. And so they did
(25:57):
a breakdown of the Larry Bird Celtics against the the
Ron Harper Brad Doherty Cleveland Cavaliers when they were in
sort of the early days of developing. It's a really
great look at how the NBA works and how it functions.
And so I've always wanted to do a football book
books like that and whether but it's hard to get

coaches to agree to that kind of access. And then
but Sean Payton was one of the few guys who
I got to agree to it. But it was trying
to find another coach willing to do it and sort
of break down an NFL game in book form, like
what is the thinking going on here? What are you
anticipating all the factors that go into a game? And
(26:38):
I thought I was genius and what I thought that
Steth did captured perfectly in the story. It's just it's
it's Seth. I mean, Seth's got He's one of the
greatest writers in America for sports writing today, him and
Right Thompson and a handful of others. But you know,
Seth was able to get inside the mindset and the

thinking the approach of a team going into a game.
And I've always just wanted to do that, sort of
amplify it and do it from both ends and then
describe the game, because again I wanted to do sort
of forty eight minutes. And so what I did, what
I sent to Seth is this is just it's awesome,
you know, like the story is awesome. That's long it takes,
(27:21):
you know, it's a good Yeah, you've got to have
some time proved out and you've got to focus on this.
But I thought it was just a great look into
the mindset of meetings where coaches think, how they describe things,
you know, the anxiety and the angst that goes into
what they do. Again, it's just brilliant work by Seth Wickersham.

The issues you've got to get coaches are so secretive
that they just don't they don't trust and they don't
trust that you're gonna keep stuff secret for a long
period of time. And that always been the problem with us.
So it's trying to find two coaches or are will
and participate. So there you go.

to say, I was channeling you because I'm gonna give
The big thing coming out of this article was that
a couple of years ago, Sean Payton said he had
the idea of offering the head coaching job to Bill Belichick,
letting him be the head coach for as long as
it took him to break Don Shula's record, then he
would step down and Sean Payton would run the team again.

He would be the offensive coordinator while Belichick would get
the wins. And I thought about you because my first
thought was in your voice, I'm about try to do
in your voice and go And here's what you would say.
You would say, how much did Sean Peyton hate Don
Shula to make this something that he wanted to do?

No, I wouldn't think about it that way, come on line. Yeah, No,
it was Look, I give you credit for for, you know,
searching into my deep and dark past, because Donchella is
part of that dark past, because I had to cover

I think that that's I give him credit that mostly
that's a nod to Belichick, who he is, he's so
close to. I don't look at that one as a negative,
like you know, yeah, you know, I don't take that
as sticking it to Shula, although I can Yeah, I'm
sure there's some hatred there because Sula obviously didn't like Belichick,

especially at the end, and made the mistake of not
hiring Belichick when he was the young coach. So that's
on Sheilo as well. But I know there's no love
lost between those two. But I to me, Peyton, it's
more of a nod to fellow Check and just how
much he admires And because those guys used to practice
against each other, you know, during training camp, and they

would spend a lot of time together talking about stuff,
and you know, I think that you know, Peyton certainly
thinks of himself on the genius level of Belichick. I
wouldn't necessarily altogether agree with that, but yeah, he's not
far removed, certainly from from double Check. Right. That's how
I would do it. That's that's that's a really serious

answer to something that should have been a lot funnier.

single night. So tonight in Major League Baseball and a
(32:00):
downer of a storyline because he is the biggest star
in the game and I'm everybody hoping we would see
him in the All Star Game next week, we are not,
as Shoho Tani is not going to participate in the
All Star Game. He is dealing with knee irritation, something
that has bothered him on and off throughout his career.
(32:21):
He was supposed to pitch tonight, he is not. So
anybody who thought Otani was pitching and saw that, my goodness,
the Diamondbacks have eight runs. No Otani did not pick.
So he gets scratched tonight. But he is DH. He's
going to DH with the weekend series, but he's not
going to the All Star Game. Instead, he's gonna have
some quote interventions on his knee to put him in
(32:42):
the best position for the second half of the season. Basically,
his left knee's gonna get drained pain relieving injection in
LA on Sunday. Not going to expect or expect the
procedure to impact his ability to pitch after the All
Star break, but right now the Dodger's not sure when
that's going to be. So basically Otani knee irritation skipping
(33:03):
the All Star Game, which sucks. Instead, he's gonna have treatment.
This goes back to something that the Dodgers really have
to realize, and we've talked about this for a long
time show. Hal Tani's body is not a body that
is conducive to him going through the rigors of pitching.
(33:26):
As much as he has. It just isn't and we
talked about the Dodgers. The smart thing to do is
to be to make him a closer. Make him a closer.
He doesn't have to throw a lot of pitches because
we've already seen he's had two Tommy John surgeries, right,
a couple of UCL injuries. Right, he's got lingering knee issues.
When's he had lingering knee issues in the past, Well,
(33:49):
when he's been pitching, when's he had lingering knee issues
with the Dodgers, when he's pitched as much as he
has so far this year. I get he wants to start.
I understand this, but be honest, his body at this point,
you know, over the age of thirties, played a while,
he's pitched a while, he's hit a while. It's not
(34:10):
built to withstand the rigors of being a starting pitcher
in Major League Baseball, from the elbow to the knee.
And he's so valuable as a hitter. Obviously, he's a
you know, four time MVP. You need to make sure
you're getting the most out of him in his career.
And so far the pitching injuries have not kept him
out of a ton of big games, but it's kept
(34:31):
him out of games right, his time entire time with
the Angel Okay, well the Angels, he stay Angels think,
but when he goes to the Dodgers, he's been pretty
healthy for them. But the Dodgers, I think, as much
as he wants to pitch, as much as this is
something that he's done at what makes him the unicorn
that he is. He's thirty two now and the Dodgers
have to sit back and say, Okay, what's going to
keep him on the field for us the most? What's
(34:54):
gonna be the best thing we can do the rest
of his career for him for everything. He's not going
to give up pitching entirely, but maybe again, you make
him a closer where he's pitching sixty somewhat innings a
year instead of every fifth day. He's out there for
five or six and he's great. I mean, he's having
a phenomenal year pitching, right. I talked about him. I said,
he's gonna win the Cy Young this year. He's my
(35:15):
Cy Young pick in the in the in the National League,
and he and he is right there with what he
is doing pitching. But you want to make sure he's healthy.
And I don't think there's any more of a correlation
you can draw to. Okay, welly, he was a big
starting pitcher with with his with his big responsibility with
the Angels, a couple of injuries that knocked him out
(35:35):
right pitching. He couldn't do it anymore. This is the
first time he has started for the Dodgers, and first
half of the year. He's got to miss the All
Star break because he's got the knee. Knee injury has
come back again. Yeah, I get that. He's eight and
two as Era is one point seventy ninety again as
having a tremendous year right now. His whip is under one.
But you want to make sure Otani's there every day
(35:57):
for you, and DH has been fine. You have to
put him back on the field to be your DH
for the rest of his career. But pitching, you have
to do something. And look, I would say, I don't
know how much you could pitch again the rest of
the way, But yeah, okay, let's try you closing where
the rigors of throwing sixty SOMEHDD innings instead of here
he is at eighty five at the All Star break already,
(36:18):
and you're gonna get him up into one thirty one forty.
He hasn't had those kind of innings in a long time. Right,
The last time he won one hundred and thirty innings
was three He was still with the Angels when he
did it three years ago. I don't know that you
can do that to him again. So I think the
Dodgers have to make a really tough decision when it
comes to Otani.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
No, it's tough all around. But I mean, we look
at where they were at. The Dodgers have absolutely been
crushing it. They're losing tonight, although Otani did Homer uh.
So those that came to the game thinking they were
going to get in the pitch, well you didn't get that.
But he at least watched him tried around the bases,
so you got that little victory. But you're also looking
at a team that has been just hit with injuries
(36:57):
one after another, and you expect that when you play,
you know, an extra month each year, right as they've
done the last couple and even the years they didn't win,
they're going deep into the playoffs, you're going and playing
a lot of extra innings. And then obviously Otani uh
and his body, and we've chronicled his history of injuries,
(37:17):
but you've seen it creep up with the squad. You
haven't played a full team, a Dodger squad yet. And
I point to that specifically in the pitching department, because
you're still looking at a number of guys you're waiting
to come back off injuries and wishing, wanting, hoping, and
now here's another opportunity. And I think if you're the Tigers,
although you've crept back into competition and contention, you're still
(37:41):
looking around with Tarik Skooble going you know, we have
the golden Goose sitting here, and a team that can
give us a lot of stuff is very vulnerable right now.
And with Otani and this issue, yeah, you've got hard
decisions as to what the makeup is of your roster
going forward, but certain his future because you, as much
(38:02):
as he may want to push and think that this
is still where he wants going. Look, you're gonna acquiesce
in a in a lot of ways to whatever he wants.
You're also trying to make sure he stays in the lineup.
And while it's not affecting him, as he's only a
DH I say that you know only kind of italicized
(38:22):
or whatever the most important DH going since Harold Baines
that We're still sorry I had to do it since
earlier another guy whose career was brilliant and then the
issues popped up and precluded him from playing the outfield
because once upon a time they did keep track of, Hey,
this guy is really leading the league when it comes
(38:43):
to outfield assists. But for Sho heo Tani, if this
now becomes a degenerative thing or something that becomes an
issue where he's got to miss every couple of days
in the lineup, well now it starts to compound, and
you're not worried about what he is as a pitcher
performer five years from now. You're trying to win in
twenty twenty six. But the reality is you'll if you
(39:04):
let it go. You have no idea how much that
starts to compound itself. And as you get to September
or October, which are really the only months that matter
for the Dodgers, is he available to you? So yeah,
a week of rest at the All Star break is
all finding good, But how are you managing this going forward?
Speaker 5 (39:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (39:24):
I mean, look and I get that him closing, and
that's the whole thing. It's not just as simple. It's
a difficult thing. It's not just as simple as well
he can close, because you're worried about what do you
do to the roster, because if he comes in to close,
you lose the DH position and you have to manage
it a little bit there. So I understand that. But really,
(39:44):
you're bringing a guy in who is one of the
best pitchers in Major League Baseball. If you're bringing him
into close, Okay, you bring him into close and you
lose the DH position. Okay, you deal with that, right
if he's your closer, If he's your guy and he's
going to be closed out the World Baseball Classic, right,
if he's your clothes you're bringing him in with a lead.
You are expecting to walk away with three outs and
(40:05):
a win. How many says is he gonna is a
closer gonna blow over the course of year five? Maybe
if he does, right, let's just say he blows five games,
if he gets to keep the job, yeah that's sorry, show, Hey,
you're done. But like let's say he blows five Okay,
so then you lose the DH for however long you
go in the rest of those games. Remember putting a
runner at second base in the in the extra innings, like, okay,
(40:28):
I think the Dodger you could deal with that. I
think that's an acceptable outcome of Okay, if in the
games that show hey could blow, you could lose the
position there, Okay, I think you can you work it out.
I don't think it's something that suddenly, oh you're looking
at a loss yet. No, okay, so if you lose
a dh by, you lose the HBOT. It's okay. I
think the Dodgers can find a way around it. I mean,
(40:49):
baseball is built and predicated on failure, right, most of
the guys that come up are not gonna get a hit.
So if you have a situation where a guy's not
not gonna come up and get a hit, most likely
because you're gonna bat there in that position. Okay, all right,
so I agree, I get it. It's a bit of
a thing to figure out, but it's not that big
a deal.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
I do kind of dig the idea of it, and
then what's his walkout music? May that that becomes the
next part of the equation. I mean, you got what's
what's deed rule going to be playing on the order?
Speaker 1 (41:17):
No, no, no, doesn't he walk out to I Love La,
which is you know what they play after they win
games like that, be saying, hey, the game's over, and
here comes back.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
I did it. I right.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Hey, no, this is a bit presumptive, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Well, let's games over? No, I liked. I like if
they did that, that would be really cool because the
other team would get really pissed. Oh, they think the
game is over because show Way is in, and they
play it when he goes in, and then they play
it when they win.
Speaker 4 (41:40):
At the end, I'm in.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
They just pick it up right where the music ends,
so they start the inning so in the three outs,
like you hear the song right from where it's right
from where it left off. Let's go back to the song.
We have it on pause, like it's on pause right now,
we're gonna play it. There we go, there's Randy Newman again.
I Love La more.
Speaker 4 (41:58):
Randy Newman is a win for all of us.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
I'm digging that. I'm digging that. But I mean, look,
I get that you want to do that. I get
that you want to keep him a starter. I understand that,
but boy, you're looking at trying to manage his career
where you're looking out for his body at this point
and the correlation what they have in common with here's
all these innings he's pitching. Here his big injuries, right
(42:22):
and so far this is more of a warning than
it is anything else because it looks like he's okay
but dealing with the knee situation before. And look, it's
not so bad that he's not dhing tonight. You don't
want it to turn into something worse, what you know,
more wear and tear on him. You know you're doubling
his innings pitch potentially the rest of the season, and
you know they're going into the playoffs, so it's not
gonna be well. Hey, September thirtieth, Otani he's got the
(42:43):
jacket on for the last time, waving to the fans, going.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
Ah, goodbye, everybody else see it.
Speaker 1 (42:47):
No, I mean it's it's you're expecting a playoff run
in this at least two maybe three starts from Otani
over the course of the playoffs, probably more from him.
So yeah, all of a sudden, this is this is
a big workload that you're asking him to man, It's
a big workload. Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen Dome,
