This is the best of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Greetings, Welcome inside happy Home Run Derby Monday, The Jason
Smith Show with my base friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Go on.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
The Cup is down to its final matches. DraftKings has
you covered for every single one right now, use the
promo code JSS to claim your special offer DraftKings Again.
That's promo code JSS at DraftKings. DraftKings Code JSS Code
JSS at DraftKings. The crown is yours. Well. Here we
are in the final four of the Home Run Derby

(00:59):
in Philadelphia. Kyle Schwarber has seven home runs, He's got
three swings left. He's amping up the crowd as the
home Run Derby reaches a fever pitch.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
You know it seemed nicely done that movie with Jimmy
Fallon all those years ago Andrew Barrymore. Schwarber seems like
he's tailored his uniform now to show folks that he's
more swollen than the bulk Master that they used to
call him, right because it used to be equated to
Babe Ruth from the idea of a he's a bit

(01:31):
bulky because you know, they wore those those jerseys and
the pants made you look about fifty pounds heavier than
you actually were. So I think Schwarber's decided, you know what,
I want to show folks I'm in shape because there's
always this controversy like I'm gonna break down because I'm
not taking care of myself. Yeah, I got so far again,
we thought we could potentially get a couple of Phillies

(01:53):
in here. But Bryce Harper maybe he's no One sent
him a message saying, hey, Bryce, you know watching a
couple too soon for that?

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Oh, very very much. So.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
I mean there's there there will be lawyers. That is
a situation that is quite unsavory right now.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
But look, like I said, we're into the final four
now and Schwarber has just finished his round my guy
didn't make it, and uh, well we got kamon Aro
coming up. Well that's my other Camano because that's that's
my mom's guy, Caminarchie. I got a little teary when
they retired Longoria's number yesterday there in Tampa.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
But I mean, Canyonaro cameon Caminero like he should really
come out to that, like that should be it. So
it should be the Kenyon Arrow music from the simps,
like you should come out to They should just play
that like that ten second jingle. It's a dear smacking
killing machine. Well, you know at the end, there's the
full extended version is at the end of that episode
if you let it play all the way through as

(02:49):
the credits roll.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Well, look, but so far, the couple of things from
the Home Run Derby one thing that's surprising, but but
it's kind of fun to see. But the first thing is,
here's your Home Run derbytes on Netflix. Yep, right, I know,
put plenty of people my dad, Hey, where's the Home
Run Derby?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
No, that that really did take a lot of folks.
I surprised it.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
It's like, what the hell we had a pole in
the house today with with my wife and Zoe and ies, Okay.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
What time does Grandpa text me?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
What?

Speaker 4 (03:16):
Where's the Home Run Derby?

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Over under? Yeah, I said, I said three thirty. Pam
said no, no, no, it's be way earlier than that.
He's going to plan his days, he said, twelve thirty.
He's always I'm gonna go with the middle two thirty.
Uh it was. It was kind of close between Zoe
and I because it was like a little bit after three.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
He said, Hey, so where's the Where's the Home Run Derby?

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Dad? It's on Netflix.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
See, I figure it would have been like four oh
five because you would have had the the pre show.
Like I don't know how early that started on Netflix,
because that used to be a big pomp and circumstance
ceremony thing on on ESPN, where it'd be a good
two hours ahead of the the first pitch. So I
figured maybe he'd creep closer to start time.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Uh yeah, you know.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
But the thing is like my dad is now more
of an early Riser than he what you know, he's
in his late seventies, tea somewhere, an early riser, get out,
get you know, doing stuff. So it's like like early
for him, Like he's seven, eight o'clock like now suddenly
because he goes to bed at like nine and uh,
and I just said, okay, I said so, I said,
you know, but he's gonna go I think he's gonna
go late. I think he's gonna be out doing stuff today.
He's at the whole weekend. He's gonna while like I'm

(04:23):
trying to figure out everything he's doing. Yeah, when's he
gonna get the text? Yah about the for so like
I thought he would kind of get to the point
where Okay, I'm getting close to But look, honestly, you know,
watching it as we have so far, and that's that's
the first big question is Okay, here's a home run
derby on Netflix, and this is the correct verdict for
the home run derby on Netflix? Is that the home

(04:46):
run derby? And how we've seen it's coverage tonight, it's
using MLB network people Orange shaht he was just interviewing
UH players on the field and and you know, it's
like it was on ESPN the last few years. A
home run derby is fine, right, It's not the worst
home run derby you've ever seen in your life. And
Netflix is ruining it. And I keep getting promos for

(05:08):
the next season of three body problem. I don't what know,
you're not getting any of that. Oh this is the best,
I like to cap. I'm so glad it's away from ESPN.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
Nah.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
Like I said, you kind of miss Bourban.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
A little bit. I will have more on that in
a minute. But like overall, like yeah, it's it's fine,
like the home run Derby, not that it's seen its day,
but as far as the popularity of it and how
and how watchable it is, it kind of is what
it is at this point. You can you can change
the rules all you want, and I like the rule
changes to stop guys from Hey, hit twenty eight home
runs in the second round and boy he's the big story.

(05:39):
But of course he's got nothing left and you know,
he loses and somebody else wins. We're not even gonna
talk about, like you kind of you know, I like
that rule change to kind of protect the players. Maybe
you can end with a flourish more than you're ending
with just this guy's just not as tired as the
other guy. But overall, like, yo, okay, it kind of
is what it is. Right when you get big names
in there, it's kind of fun for a little while,
but overall, the you know, you can't ask it to

(06:01):
be something it's not. It's not you know, home field
advantage in the World Series. Now, maybe if we got
a tied All Star Game tomorrow, another home run derby
to break it like we had last year. But you know, overall,
it's kind of a fun night just to celebrate baseball
and and be that event that after a hot day
doing whatever you're doing. Hey, I'm just gonna sit back
at night and watch people at home runs. I'm just

(06:21):
gonna watch the dingers for a while. And that's kind
of what it is. Kind it kind of is what
it is. I think that's the correct verdict of the derby,
especially the derby on Netflix, because it's been fine.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
It's been great. It's not been awful, it's been fine.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
In the in the end, it's guys swinging for the
downs on every pitch, which is pretty much major League
baseball in twenty twenty six anyway. Right, That's that's all
we're ad. It's like, it's the same same swing that
we have in most of these games. The fact that
you do have so much star power is great, right,
that that adds a little bit of juice to it
be good to intersperse you know, some first half highlights

(06:55):
and whatever, just kind of, you know, give breathe in
some life to what you may have missed from the
first season, first half of the season as you go in.
But the fact that Murakami came back over the weekend
to play for the White Sox and was available for
this is nice because he's he's become one of those
Darling signed the Jordan Brand deal that that got announced today.

(07:17):
You had Schwarber and and Harper Caminaro like all of
these guys.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
That are Kadam Andero.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Now we're gonna watch that that video in the break.
But it's just that it's another piece that you check
the box. All right, we're at the midsummer this is it.
Like yesterday we over the weekend we had the draft
into whatever, you know, all Star Sunday Night became. But

(07:46):
it doesn't have the same juice that it once did
because I think with a lot of these these extras,
it's the all right, yes and right, it's the improv
version of everything we do with with sports of all right, well,
how do you up? I don't know, the the home
run ball is great, like the last different colored baseball,
make it, take it and hit as many as you can.

(08:08):
That's all fine and good. The fact that you don't
have the pitch clock is great, although I think a
couple of guys probably could have used it earlier in
the aforementioned Murakami. And then yeah, and then it's Cagli
Taglion and his dad went up there going like, hey,
let's get this done as fast as we can.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
There's gonna be a little bit of a rough you know,
we're gonna have to figure things out.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
First two hit by eight minutes, and then Caglio comes in.
It's like four minutes and I'm done. I'm done, like gone,
Like his dad's throwing as fast as he can get.
It's like you're watching Chris Sale on the in an
actual major league game.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Your time wasn't even as long as Stairway to Heaven.
And I don't mean the eleven minute version. I mean
like the edited seven minute version. You could even make
it that long. But my favorite part of the derby, right, okay,
go ahead, and this is and this is part of
the journey that we have in this country with celebrity. Right.
So for the longest time. Chris Berman's the big star
at ESPN. How many of you I've told you many

(09:04):
stories working with him. You know why berman impression is
fantastic and disagree Berman's a big well you know what,
and they those guys TJ can just like the Jets
go fall off a cliff. Uh. So you know he's
a big star. But then the Burman backlash comes and
suddenly people on on social media, I don't like Berman.

(09:26):
I don't like this, the stick that he has had
for years, all the nicknames.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
The back back, brack, prack, prag growing right, I don't
like it. And suddenly up ESPN.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
What do we do? We listen to everybody on social media.
So now they push Berman out and he's a persona
non grata. But now he's coming back a little bit
and he's doing a little bit of prime Time with
Booger McFarland, which is awesome because that was the show
of record for so long in the NFL. Right, But
like everybody hated him, hated him, hated him. Can't stand,
can't stand, can't stand. But usually, you know, we say, hey,

(09:55):
sometimes you live long enough to become the villain. Sometimes
you go from the hero to the villain. But you
stick around long enough and then suddenly, ah, people start
to miss you again. When I saw Chris Berman trending tonight,
I said, oh my goodness, Okay, it's a number two.
Was a number two trending topics he did did the
home on Derby for so long, and I said, many times,
at least give Berman this, like when when ESPN had it,

(10:17):
they still had to give him this, right, or Netflix
should call and say, Chris, come up and do this
in the ESPN would say, yes, we're going to loan
you him to do this for for tonight, right, just
because I want to count how many times over the
course of a two and a half hour event he
says the word back the over under his six hundred
and seventy four times. That's now, that was only in
the first round for me.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
I'll tell you what, so that would have been a
really active colch Yeah, how many how many backs from
the beginning of the of the turn till the end
from the first he says the word back, Yeah, cal,
she could have made some money right when Contres stepped
into the box till the end of the Yeah, final swing.
But I love the fact that I see all and
I see the quotes, and it's all, Oh, man, I

(10:57):
miss Berman. I really miss And that's in general though
most of the most you still get your odd one.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Now. Oh, I'm so glad, but generally everybody misses him.
And I thought that was really cool that here's you know,
people understand that. Okay, there's there's you know, you love somebody,
you hate somebody. But I like the fact that everybody
seemed to, Oh, now I really miss the guy. He
hasn't done it in a long time, because really, the
home run Derby was a thing. He helped make it
a thing, right with all his calls a different home
run calls, he helped make it a thing. And so

(11:25):
I kind of dig that people miss him a little
bit with that right now. Selfishly, if I had known that,
I'd have called Netflix there here in la I just said, listen,
I'll come on as Berman and do it. You don't
even have to pay me, and I can, and I'll
just do it as Berman for two and a half hours.
I'll give you crazy nicknames, I will do it, and
I'll do his voice just like it is during the derby,

(11:46):
like when you get halfway through it, all of a
sudden and I have no voice left, DJ backpack pack gone, God, Like,
I'll even do that for you. I'll again, you don't
even have to pay me. I will come and do it.
I'll come sit in your studios in LA and I
will do it for free.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Which would have happened first your voice would have started
to go, or you would have been served decease and
desist letter by Berman's lawyers.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Oh do I think he would have loved that? Well,
if I can't do it, at least Jason, who I
worked with him, is doing it for me like that.
That'd be pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
No.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
I think part of what.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Happened with Berman also, though, is all those years that
you had the Overnight where they just rerun and I
think they still do. I can't claim to know their programming,
but once upon a time it was the rerunning of
Sports Center all through the night, which means if Berman
was hosting, Oh yeah, they got all the Burmans for

(12:37):
ten straight out, you got tons of them, you got
to right, and people thought he was chained to that desk.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
No, no, no, it's just a repeat.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Oh yeah, yeah, but if you did it for the
full night, that's.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
A lot of Berman, or even even the next day
when they would replay the home run derby going into
the All Star Game coverage. But I can understand where
there would be, you know a little like like Dan
hous his head backlash where you had a lot of Berman.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
Because of the repeats. Yeah, oh yeah, all of that.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
So like as he's the number one guy, it's the
all right, there's there's a lots.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
No, I mean, you could change a channel.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
He may be gone, but he may be gone one
they and they might have another anchor at the desk
when you tune back.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
One of the best Berman stories out. I've never told
this one. This is always it's just fun. This is this,
this is not this is just fun. So when I
started as a production assistant at ESPN, and you knew
you were editing a highlight for Boomer to read, and
you have these things called shot sheets where you have
to write down what was going on on the play
so he could so the anchor can read along with it.
So it's so that you know, you get the shot

(13:41):
sheets right. So at this point, Berman's how this is
mid nineties. Berman's a household name. He is the biggest
star ESPN has all of this, so you know all
the players in the game, and you go, oh, this
is the nickname he has for this guy, this name
after this guy. Right, So so I have my highlight
my baseball game, whatever it was, and and I and
I and I, you know, write in the names of
the player. And I put his nickname in there, you know,

(14:02):
for you know, obviously, you know, to help him write whatever.
So I put it in there, and and and we
go up. And what you do is you take the
tape back when it was on tape. You would take
your tape in your shot sheet and you would go
up to the to the anchor and you would say, here,
here's your highlight of this game. And they would you
would stand next to them and they would read the
highlight on the shot sheet along with the with the
watching the tape, so they knew it was going on.
If something happened they had a question, you could tell

(14:24):
them what was going on here. Oh yeah, he came
out of the game in the seventh inning. This is
a new picture in the seventh okay, great, And they'll
write a note in that. So you sit there. So
I give the shot sheet to Berman, right, and I
forget what baseball it was. You know, I don't know
who it was, but you know he's doing the whole thing.
And here the first inning, you know, home run, you
know whoever, you know, whatever it was, and I put
the nickname in there. Any second well, you know, second inning,

(14:45):
double down the line, nickname any any presses stop on
the tape. He looks at me, says, don't don't worry
about I'll put.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
The nicknames in.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Don't worry.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
I don't worry about writing the nicknames in. I'll do that.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
I said, Okay, okay, you know boom no prop okay, great, right, okay, all.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
Right, pressus fla. I'm just writing in his nicknames. I'll
do that. I'll do the nickname.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
I got the nicknames.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Okay, just just so you know, I'll do that. I'll
do that. And they prompt him to put in some
new nicknames. Did he give a guy?

Speaker 1 (15:12):
And oh he was. He was always very open, like
if you had a nickname for him, he would love
he would love to have it. There was there was
one kid one time, I'm like.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
We're now coming up with parody song. Oh yeah, where
he wants to kill you. He was so nervous because
the Mets had this picture's name was Jason Hackamy who
came up and he pitched like for a couple of
years from the Mets.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
He's like one of there. This is the late nineties.
He was one of their you know, maybe the next
great picture. But Jason hackemy and he says, I got
a nickname for Berman. I said, what he says, Jason,
how came he be lovers if we can't be friends?
I said, oh my god, that's awesome. You got to
tell him that. And he was so nervous about telling him.
I said, oh, of course he'd love he'd love that
if at least it shows you're thinking about He was
so nervous all day. And he told him about it,

(15:53):
and he again, and we're like, he goes and and
and the guy told me he said he liked it.
We'll see. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
And he actually he went on the air.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
He says, Jason, how can we be lovers if we
can't be friends? And he says, nice job, Josh. And
because that was so that was pretty cool. Yeah, so
I thought that was pretty cool. That is pretty good.
But he was always if you had an idea, now,
he didn't always use it. But if you had an
idea and you like for a nickname, gys.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Oh, okay, all right, I'll do it now.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
I feel like I know it so well. I can,
I can. I can do it better than him, you know.
I mean we got to play the day coming up next.
I got a great one for you. Okay, great, I
can't wait. I thought about it on the way in.
I'm waiting with Ben's breath. It's great enough that it's
so good, but it's such a stretch that it fits perfectly.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
I just know whenever we get this point in the calendar,
and you and I've been doing this show here at
Fox Sports Radio, blessed to do it, hope to continue
to do it for many, many years. There's always another
Berman story that comes along with the home run derby.
And I love that so many people are embracing, like
you said, number two trending today, all positivity because we're
all kids of that era as Berman was the lead

(16:57):
to all of these things. The nicknames, well, they came
out with a Tops Trading card this past year that
had an insert set that were all the nicknames for
all those players, for Bo Jackson, for Greg, you know, Appomattox, quarters.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
I mean all of those things that the celebration of him.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
I think we and our media could could do better
and better served to remember how much he was grinding
in those early years to give us content and to
make ESPN a thing.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (18:11):
We are headed to the top of the sixth inning
in the Midsummer Classic. American League leads the National League
three nothing, all three runs played it in the first
inning back to back Garby I hits by a pair
of New York Yankees. Yay, they can hit here. Yeah,
oh yeah, Hey, all their problems have been solved. All
the problems are solved. Now, Hey, the All Star Game
is great. Christopher Sanchez, who what do you have one
hundred and fifty straight scoreless inning streak this season? Yeah,

(18:34):
apparently his kryptonite is the American League. He gives up
three in the first inning and that is all of
your run so far. The only hit for the National
League Juan Soto before departing the game for Corbyn Carroll. Now,
we'll get to the big drama from this game in
a couple Yeah, we got a couple of times.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
I mean, Sanchez threw seemingly one hundred and fifty pitches.
It's a lot, man like, it's a one hundred and
fifty innings.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
That's a lot.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Like.

Speaker 4 (18:58):
He just kept going, and the shots of Dave Roberts
just pained.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Look on his face a second, right, Like Dave Roberts
is sitting there going, Okay, it's the All Star Game.
Everybody is cool. Everybody is playing it cool. We're all good. Yeah,
everybody's here to have fun. Don't worry. I'm not gonna
overuse anybody. Everything's good. Nope, top of the first inning.
Here you go, hometown Philly starter. He's over thirty pitches.
What do you do? Yeah, because you got nobody in

(19:22):
the bad right.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Come on, none of your other starting pitchers are available
for the National League right, all because of where they
pitched in the rotation or guys that needed time off, right,
like the miz and whatever else.

Speaker 4 (19:35):
Like, yeah, he's got to finish this inning.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
Huh yo. Everything was going great for we were going
to catch the Braves, and then they overused Sanchez in
the All Star Game, and then he had a dead
ar in the rest of the second half was unusable.
His rera was five point nines. Like you pitch for
the Mits. Here's nothing we could do. Dave Roberts killed us. Dave,
it's Dave Roberts fault. He likes to take pictures out
of games all the time. On the West Coast. I

(19:59):
see those late night eigh lights. Guys have no hitters
into the ninth inning, had forty seven pitches, and here
comes some bullpend guys.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
They blow the lead.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
Oh no, I see it, and they walk it off
at the end. No, this is this is absolute chaos
for us. This is this is where our season fell apart.
Was the All Star Game when Dave Roberts left Sanchez
in there so long.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
He was it's a nefarious act, right, I mean because
normally he does.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
It's what he did. I couldn't take him out.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
He couldn't take his way out. No, could his way out. No,
you're in the middle of the rant. And then you
just keep yelling wiz win.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
It, whiz wento out. No, No, you could go whiz
with wit doesn't matter. You go go get a hogy,
doesn't matter. You go to wah wah. No all these
different things. I went. I went to wahwah, got a hogy,
came back, had it, went back, got another one, came back.
It was still the top of the first inning. Sanchez
was still pitching. Very difficult, very long ass inning, no
question about it. But yeah, Dave Roberts, if this goes

(20:49):
badly for Sanchez, he's gonna be blamed for it. Again.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
I like the contrast that you did because that's immediately
where my head went as I was watching it go down.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
It's got normal. He pulls guys really fast.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
And now he's sitting there, going to wait for it,
wait for it, and trying to manage a game because
he doesn't have all of those other starters at it
as a disposal.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Could he have walked out there, you know, after giving
up the runs at thirty pitches and said, hey, I'm
gonna get you innovation walking off the field. So I'm
gonna take you out of the game now, And good job.
Who's coming into pitch, key Ky Hernandez, don't worry. He's
the guy that's I don't know if you know, he's
on my suball star list. He's gonna come in and
finish standing for you.

Speaker 3 (21:28):
Well, you know what, they did have a Ky Hernandez
pitching bobblehead giveaway because they have a lot of giveaways. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
so uh you know, look, obviously, you know, a very
big deal. Thirty four pitches for Christopher Sanchez in the
first and we were doing great.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
We were going to catch the Braves.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Yeah, we were good. They were playing seven hundred ball.
We didn't have a good manager. We fired him and
we were gonna catch you know, all of a sudden, No, Sanchez,
he's got a dead Army's showing the ball his top
fastball topped out at fifty four miles an hour. It
was terrible.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
It's bad because as we get towards the trade deadline,
it's hey, what are the due to chase down the Dodgers?

Speaker 1 (22:01):
I don't know. They might need another arm now. No,
now we're not gonna get Lebron and ed Jalen Hurts.
His job is in jeopardy. I watched ESPN and he
said that to you. I don't know what's going on.
I don't know what to root for now. Maybe the Union,
I don't know. I don't know. I don't think so,
I don't know. You called Rob mcaleney, I know he's
Robed Mack. He didn't go by mcalene anymore. Just Rob Mack.
Is that right? Oh? Yeah, his name now he's officially

(22:23):
Rob Mack. The guy's fifty years old, and I'm changing
my name for some reason joining a boy band. No,
I don't think he just wanted people to mess his
name like MC. I mean'll just be a weightlifting he
now chased a fifties, fifty years old, I'm changing my
name to Rob Mac. That makes me sad. Yeah, that's
what he did though. That's why he hear that.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
Uh Now, two other things about this game is because
nobody watched the last season of Wrexham Wrexham see Wrexham's
Tough now Man, because everybody knows what happens right way
before the show hits. And now it's like all and
now it's all players that you know, you invest in
Mullin and Ollie Palmer and all these guys and Jordan Davies,
and after like the third season, it's like, yeah, we
just keep trading guys on as we move up the ladder.

(23:05):
Don't don't get to attached to any of these any
of these players, because they're gonna be gone after a season.
Oh that's funny is I was working a deal on
a couple of trading cards on a guy and he
tried to throw in a Welsh Pool okay, autograph card
of Mullen.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
I'm like, I have no use for that.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
What if I throwing a Paul Mullen card.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
I'm good, thank you. Uh Now, the other big topic
of this game and this is I know it sucks
and it's under the category of occupational hazard. My mom
is pissed.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Ye oh yeah, yeah. So I got a text immediately
going what the hell do you think?

Speaker 1 (23:41):
Maybe we put it out there in the universe last
night we did the caminar.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
I think we might have done that, just like the
Phillies fans are gonna blame Dave Roberts if their season
goes down.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
Smells like a steak. In Seats thirty five, Junior Camonaro
leaves tonight's game after getting hit by a pitch in
the hand, a runaway fastball, and who knows what if
you're on social media, now it's it's a broken wrist.
It's a broken finger. He's gonna, he's gonna he's gonna
lose his entire palm. The ball went through his palm.

(24:11):
There's a big hole in his hand right now. But
it did you not have that? Like the seeing eye
on his palm now? The eye of alcohol? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (24:20):
Yeah, you know what was what movie was that?

Speaker 1 (24:22):
Where the where you didn't know if if the creature
was a good guy or a bad guy, he had
his hands he would put over his eyes because yeah, yeah,
what was it? He would put his hands over his eyes.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Labyrinth, Yes, pants, Labyrinth, Yeah, very good. Yeah, way to
crowdsource that. But uh, I mean Kem and Arrow is
having an incredible year. This year for the rais o
ps is near nine point fifty las home run I mean,
I look, he had a home run streak, and now
who knows what it is for him? Who knows when
he's gonna come come back to play? And this is

(24:54):
now everybody's worst nightmare than in an All Star game
or some kind of game that doesn't mean anything, World Baseball, Lass,
this child, one of your players, Edwin Das somebody else
could get hurt and wind up missing a bunch of time.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
This is again, well I saw.

Speaker 3 (25:08):
That happen if it gets hit, if he gets hurt
in the the construct of the game versus jumping around
and celebrating two different things.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
Can't trust you to jump in the air. How far
are you jumping? Just like six inches? Like I'm just
jumping straight paper. Yeah, so now we're waiting to find
out what the result on Camonaro is like one of
the most exciting players in the game.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
Right now, you know, oh.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Right away, immediate, right away, do not pass, go, do
not collected, go straight to the locker room.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
And I guess this this is I don't know now
because this this is I'm actually spending some time because
this is where I'm getting to on this is that
driving into work, right, I'm sitting here going, Okay, So
I'm fifty five and I think about the All Star Game,
and you know, everybody's everybody's tired topic about the All
Star Game. You know, it's not like the All Star
Game when I was a kid, when it was about this.

(25:56):
When I remember when I was seven and I would
take my nightly bath, coming out in my tidy white underwear,
and I got to stay up till nine thirty and
then I had to go to bed, and I missed
the last five innings of the game. But boy, those
first four innings were wondrous. The players seem like gods.
You never got to see them. They were always on
the West Coast at night. That was what baseball was like.
If I hear another topic like that, oh my god.

(26:16):
But this is where I'm at now when it comes
to All Star games. I don't know if this means
I'm jaded. I don't know if this means I'm realistic.
I don't know if this means I'm a real fan.

Speaker 4 (26:25):
I don't know what.

Speaker 1 (26:26):
But when it comes to All Star games or events
like an All Star Game, World Baseball, Classic Flag Football,
Pro Bowl, whatever it was like, I used to think, Okay,
this is fun. I watched this and then, and certainly
there's certain things you want to think about. Is just
being fun? Home run derby is fun to watch. It's
a fun it's a popcorn and it was fun. Yesterday.

Speaker 4 (26:45):
Everybody came back. Yeah, to the other side. The pendulum
swung back.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
I mean, I know that there's some plays some fans
like to say, I just hope this guy doesn't screw
up his swing for the rest of the year trying
to hit all these home runs like that's like, okay,
come on, but I kind of going mad dog a
little bit when I did Mikey tell you, I don't
like it.

Speaker 5 (27:01):
I don't like it, Mike, I don't like to want to.
I have to play in this game, Mikey, Mikey, Mikey.
Let me tell you, Mikey, Mikey want to was a
guy that paid him seven out and sixty five million
dollars again paid to go watch the same dog gotta
come back. I can't, Mike, I can't. I'm just watching
on Todd. I think the Met's aren't gonna happen now.
I don't know it's gonna happen that I gonna do.
But like as a fan, as a.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
As a fan, when I watch an All Star game
now of in any in any anything, my first thought
is like I don't really care about any look, I.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
Want to see something fun. I want to have something
fun for it.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
But my number one thought is don't have anybody on
my team get hurt. Like that's what when I come
to All Star games. Instead of the pageantry, it's a
little bit, Yeah, that's great. Don't get hurt.

Speaker 4 (27:46):
That's awesome. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
Like, I don't know if this is what a twenty
twenty six fan should be like, I don't know if
this is me stuck in a rut. I don't know
if this is me being realistic. Like I don't know
what kind of fan this makes me. But I'm driving
in going now.

Speaker 4 (28:00):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Am I older? Because now you just think about the
bad things that But like when it comes to an
All Star game, like I can, I can compartmentalize it
with the home run derby and there's like, okay, if
you know Pete A. Lonza won the home run derby,
I wasn't worried about his swinging the rest of the year, Like, oh,
I hit all those home runs of the dirt, just
gonna try to keep hitting home runs second half that
nothing else I could do. It's just gonna keep trying
to hit tingers. Like Okay, that that I'm like, all right.
But when it comes to also, like that's what I

(28:21):
think of. That's my first thing, is Okay, when the
Mets just had won SODO, Like if you know, if
the Mets, how we're having a good season, Like let's
say the Mets having a big season, there were four
guys down going Okay, nobody get hurt. Nobody get hurt
in this game. Nobody turn an ankle, nobody doing, nobody
get hit by a line drive, nobody get hit by
a pitch now, but like one, so all right, played,
he's out of the game.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
Okay, great, all right.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
Now. Obviously the stakes are not that big this year
because the Mets are terrible and it's gonna be all
about the the trade deadline. But like overall, like that's
the kind of fan I am right now when it
comes to All Star Games, is okay, the number one thing,
don't get hurt after that I don't care what else happens.
Hopefully it's fun, gives us something fun to talk about.
You know, I'm not gonna sit here and default to
the here know the changes that need to be to
the All Star Game every all the tire topics you

(29:02):
get around the All Star Game every year by lazy
radio hosts that don't know what to do. The trug
their shoulders and go, I don't know, let's talk about
changing this. Let's talk about it. But like I'm at
that point now where the number one thing is okay,
no injuries, then whatever else happens, I'm okay with.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
It's always singing in the back of your mind, everyone
meet the Fates. Is that a song that's part of Hadestown?

Speaker 1 (29:23):
Is it really?

Speaker 4 (29:24):
There's lots of lines in Hadestown that I that I
don't know. Yeah, No, it's part of the road to Hell. Oh,
it's part of the road hell. And he's starting to
introduce everybody.

Speaker 1 (29:32):
Oh oh, when Hermes is going around her with everybody,
So before the song starts, oh yeah, okay, okay, got it, got.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
It, everybody meets yeah, okay, that's hot. Yeah, but yeah,
it's it's just that idea of I want this. I
want I want it to be played hard and from
from the opening gun to the end, whatever the sport is.
I think I'm with you, like it's always there, it's
in the back your mind, going, all right, let's get

(30:01):
out here unscathed, Let's have a good time, Let's put
on a good show, and nobody get hurt.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Breaking light.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
It's like a Broadway show.

Speaker 3 (30:09):
I mean in in a lot of ways, like all right,
let's uh, let's have some fun. We know we we've
got a couple of people that are down their their
throats are not one hundred percent, they're not feeling great,
but we're gonna do the best we can. Hopefully everybody
goes home. I'm happy.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
Uh, let's not get hurt.

Speaker 3 (30:26):
And then and that's kind of where we're at with
these All Star games, right, you want your people to participate.
And look, I'm a White Sox fan. Right, Marricami just
came back from injury. He missed one almost two months.
Team went sub five hundred in his absence. Some great games,
some great series, right, helps to play the A's. But

(30:47):
he immediately comes back and he's in the home run
derby and he's playing for his you know little wave
of your cap tonight meeting up with Kevin Durant and
all that. It's all fine and good. Uh, making everybody
excited by singing the Clarence Carter classic.

Speaker 1 (31:02):
Stroking That's good. Don't get hurt, that's all. Don't get
hurt running to first, that's all.

Speaker 3 (31:08):
I mean, like we have hope in a beleaguered, weary,
chaotic American league that if he can stay healthy and
be some semblance of the player he was for the
first two plus months, White Sox are suddenly a legitimate darling,
dark horse darling to go come out of the al.
Don't get hurt. I mean, look in the All Star Game.

(31:30):
I mean maybe you don't reinjured yourself, maybe becoming a parent.
I don't get hurt. I don't get hurt.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Don't get but I remember what I never thought about
guys going to the All Star Game and getting hurt.
I never thought about that, play about that. I I'm
my guy, not get invited, right, I'm my favorite is
I'm still upset Lee Mazilly didn't win All Star.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
Game MVP and seventy nine in the Kingdome in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (31:51):
I'm still upset about nineteen seventy nine, you were eight
eight years old, because my favorite is you were talking
about the tired tropes of the All Star Game like
it used to be, you know, like when Pete Rose
took down Ray Fossey.

Speaker 4 (32:04):
You aren't even porn doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (32:07):
That's when the game was a game.

Speaker 4 (32:10):
It's a mad world we live in. I tell you,
I'll tell you, man.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
I do feel bad for Caminero though, yeah, I mean
he's okay, and it's our fault.

Speaker 4 (32:17):
Caminer Road Carminaero, you're smacking driving machine.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
Still three nothing. The American League leads the National League again.
National League is one Juan Soto hit away from being
no hit. Yeah, and he also just caught that flyout though.
My guy Peters for the White Sox former Savannah Banana.
There you go, there you go, works out, man, he
is the man with the yellow hat. Just be around
long enough and you can go from the Savanna Bananas

(32:46):
into the Major League. Baby All Star. I think we've
learned anything in the in this country in the last
twenty years. It's whatever you want to do, don't think
you can't. You get at it.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
Wherever you are right now doesn't matter as opportunity may
present itself.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
As we are on a day after the All Star Game,
waiting for the second half begin tomorrow night, the Phillies
have a junior varsity scrimmage scheduled with the New York
Ah too soon, too soon to kick? What are you doing?

Speaker 4 (33:23):
I mean you're gonna try to hype up the nets.

Speaker 3 (33:28):
The kicks are gonna show up at Fanatics fast.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
Great.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
Oh here, Karl Anthony Towns made friends with Dan Housen
and acknowledged him great, trying.

Speaker 1 (33:38):
To show me that the Mets matter for a only game.
It's I didn't say. I said it was a JV
game against It's the only game. It's the only game.

Speaker 3 (33:46):
I'll go down to the blacktop here in Santa Monica
and go watch some basketball before I'll sit and watch that.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Yeah. Fox Sports Radio, Jason and Mike Hey trained to
push past the pay Not athletes, just people try affect
every day right here in the United States, sometimes by
someone they trusted. During the World Cup, help us break
the silence. Visit Blue Campaign Dot gov slash World Cup.
That's blue campaign dot gov slash World Cup to learn more.
And yes, the World Cup is where we begin today,

(34:15):
and there is no real better place to start. Let's
start with start with a bank, right, Let's start with
the bank. Let's give you the play of the day.
And I knew when this happened, I said, Man, I
can't wait to see what this sounds like on Telemundo Argentina,
once again proving that the New York Knicks don't own
a patent on big crazy comebacks at the end of games.

(34:36):
They score two in the final moments to eliminate England
and move on to the World Cup final, where we're
gonna get pictures of Messy bathing Yamal for the next
five days, whether you want to or not. That's gonna
be everywhere Mann tune on people's backs all of everywhere globe. Really,
I mean, I mean, you know, I look at that
picture and now I think what other stars as Messi

(35:00):
hitting his horse Cruxes in? Is it just him all?
Is it bape? Where do you have to go if
you're really gonna slay Messi on Sunday? Do you have
to find where all the other Horkruxes are it's not.
Jamal might be the final Horkcrux, like Harry was the
final Horkrux, but there may be other people. If he's driving,
if he comes the game with a big snake next
to him, there's something up, my Carmen.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Someone say we could see if he's got like a
signature on his forehead like Harry Potter. But there's been
a lot of questions of authenticity of whether he's got
a ball boy that signs a bunch of his autographs.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
So I can't even do it that way. Come Polisic,
it's time to keep you safe.

Speaker 4 (35:39):
It's taking him off the pitch for a half.

Speaker 1 (35:41):
I mean, well, he wouldn't be say he wouldn't get hurt.
We know that you would not get hurt if that happened.
But yes, we got big stuff coming up here. But
the play of the day is brought to by tire Rack.
For over forty years, Tyrack's been helping customers find the
right tires for how, what and where they drive, Shipped
fast and free, backed by free road hazard protection with
convenient installation options like mobile tire installation, tire rec dot

(36:03):
comy is the way tire buying should be well, you
want Martinez's goal with a minute long gold call from
Andre's canter on Telemundo. You got it, messy and gonna
tell you you don't for none at it.

Speaker 7 (36:16):
Time as see Nailac don't.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
No there it is in all its glory on Telemundo,
your play of the day, Martinez's goal. Look. A substitute
who came in said he had a dream, right that
I scored the game winner and that you know, Fernandez,
you were gonna score the first one, and you were there,
and you were there, and you were a scarecrow and
you were then I was gonna score the game winner.

(37:32):
That is your game winning goal. And I gotta tell
you there is no more scarier, more nerve racking time
in sports than if you are a fan of the
opposing team and you hear Andre's kantor shout messy like no, no, no,
it's going in the net. No no, no, what he
does that like you know it's going in there? He
gives you that messy like it's just gonna be in

(37:54):
the back of the bet and we're gonna lose. And
that's exactly what that sounded like.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
This is gonna end badly for us. He took four
or five breaths during that. So, I mean, you know
he's older now, man, he's in his sixties. You know,
got it, got on the cardio and got it John.
I mean, but I can't do it. I can't even
pretend to the fact that his voice holds up reasonably
well through all of that even more impressive.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
Man. Yeah, you know it's a full minute. We got
to see how long he does his longest one for
and then see if we can beat it. Well, I
don't know, we have we have Sunday, right yeah, no, no, no,
I mean, well we have the rest of the week
to do that. I mean, but we gotta do that,
see if we can beat on because I don't know
that I could have beat him back in the nineties
when he first came around, right, like, I mean, come on,
like I remember when he used to be on Letterman

(38:36):
after like the ninety four World Cup, when he became
this big star because he all the goal calls. That's
when Andre's Cantri became this big global legend and David
Letterman would just bring him out like for a couple
of shows, like for a random time goal before we
introduce our next guest. Here's andres Cantor to announce a goal,
and everybody collaps. He comes out and holds his hand
over his ear and it gives you a fake goal
call and just Yell's goal. The audience goes crazy and

(39:00):
he just walks off stage like that. That's brilliant. That
is just brilliant.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
Unpopular opinion. After thirty seconds, you can gap it for me.
Come on, like his voice starts, did you bet England?

Speaker 1 (39:13):
I told you not that I did not bet it?
Sound like you bet England. I think you bet England.
Which is not bitter and upset man, No, not bitter
and upset.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
At all, And just say a little bit like I'm
happy for him, for him and his work of the
claim and that's great. My favorite call of the game
was there was a point where Messi had the ball
and tried to go between two guys and you know,
my rudimentary, uh elemental.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Spanish understanding, I got context. I'm good.

Speaker 4 (39:44):
And then he says the word sandwich in the middle
of all of it, messy sandwich.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
And then back here, if you're paying attention, is anybody
really paying attention? What if I just say sandwich in
the middle for no reason. Yeah, go ahead, just say it?
Why not?

Speaker 3 (39:57):
I felt like I was going to open an app
and order order, but I didn't. I was able to
give myself great restraint.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
La bia s frio sandwich. Joe goes to, like, you know,
just say a whole bunch of things in Spanish and
throw sandwich in would get me? I turned around if
you said so.

Speaker 4 (40:14):
Pavlovian response. There's no question about it.

Speaker 1 (40:16):
Like you can say a lot of things, man, And
I'm just gonna sit back and go, yeah, whatever. I'm
really not paying attention of Oh, oh, say you said
sandwich sandwich like Joey and Friends. Is that a sandwich?
Is that a sandwich? We got sandwiches? Is there sandwich?
My sandwich? Now, I'm gonna say this, and I'm gonna
upset a lot of people, and I'm going to make

(40:37):
a lot of people nod their head and they're gonna
go But you really, you can't ignore what I'm gonna say.
Coming off of this game, England blows this lead late right,
a completely a complete disruption of their play. They decide
to protect a one nothing lead in the final moments.

(40:59):
Look goalscorer comes off, right, Anthony Gordon comes off. They
try to go defensively to try to hold off Argentina
and win the World Cup. Right, this is Thomas Tuckle.
This is his strategy here going in and what happens
Argentina absolutely overwhelms England and scores two goals in the
last few minutes and wins the game. Now, I don't know,

(41:21):
I'm not coaching the game. I'm watching it from three
thousand miles away, and I know, do you really think
you can stop Argentina's onslaught when you are okay and
you invite pressure in Like I mean, we just watch
a game against Egypt, right, we watched that game. We
saw what happened when you decided, hey, we're up two goals,
we're just gonna go into a defensive shell and put
eleven guys behind the ball, which is exactly what Tuckle did. Like,

(41:43):
you're not gonna Argentina's offense is too good. You were
playing terrific and you decided, let me really start to
overthink this and really try to coach the hell out
of this. When you just saw what happens when go
defensive and you go and do a shell Argentina's pressure
is relentless. I'm not surprised they scored two goals. They

(42:04):
had way more time to do it here. I thought
they could get four goals. Yeah, the last ten minutes again, Steven,
just last twenty minutes, like what are you doing? And
especially at two of Argentina's top offensive players were on
yellow cards, Like what do you do? We've seen this movie,
You've seen what Argentina does late, and you still decide
let's go do this. Let's make this incredibly bad tactical
error in the final minutes of the semi final of

(42:26):
the World Cup. Right, So I say that, and I
say this again, I'm gonna have to ducks. People gonna
swing at me. Understand, the United States problems in soccer
aren't as bad as you think they are. Look at
all of these teams that were supposed to go to
the final and win the World Cup. England's got all

(42:46):
kinds of questions. They're head coach, their strategy, they completely
biffed it, and they melted down in the final fifteen
minutes or twenty minutes of the of the semifinal game. Right,
England's got problems. Man France, they Imbappe. I can't believe
he hasn't named himself the coach. He was upset with
how the team played. They played flat in their semi
final yesterday. They were terrible. Their best players were not good.

(43:09):
They played nervous. And this is a team that was
rolling through the World Cup Norway. And as much as
we say about Earling Holland, the guy just said, yeah,
I'm coming off the field. It's it's are you kidding?
We're You're ready to go to penalty. It's tied, it's
the one hundred and fifth minute. Yeah, I can't do
it anymore. Well are you okay? Now, I'm just gonna sit.
I'm just gonna say I can't do it. What do
you mean you can't do it? What do you mean
you can't play? You are the guy that's getting us here?

(43:30):
And Brazil they fall apart every single World Cup. Way
before you think Brazil is gonna fall out of things.
When you look at all the totality of all these
best teams in the world, and you see that the
United States had a bad game. They had one day,
had a bad game after having a really good tournament,
and all the mistakes we made, all the goals in

(43:51):
the back of the nad against Belgium. They were all
our fault. This doesn't mean that the United States doesn't
need some kind of change, But it doesn't mean make
it all up and start over again and go all
the way back to the beginning and get rid of
you know, put all new youth leagues in, get new coaches.
I mean it. More evidence goes on. You see, the
best teams in the World Cup don't know how to

(44:12):
handle situations so sudden. Yes, when it happened in the
United States lost a while, they came out flat. How
terrible is that? Boy, that's inexcusable. Other teams don't do
that in the World Cup. Ah, yes they do. Yeah,
I just watch England do it? Just watch France do it?
Just watch Norway do it? Just watch Brazil do it?
I watch them all, do it? They all? These are
the top five, six seven teams in the country, or
these are two of the these are four or five

(44:33):
of the top seven teams in the country, in the world.
That's how it goes. So yes, there's nothing more than
just natural change for the United States. We won our group,
we made it to the knockout round. We want a
knockout round game. We had a bad game and we
have to adjust off of that. But to think that
all of a sudden, the United States is just oh,
we're on an island with all our problems. Now everybody

(44:53):
else has them too. We can go a little bit
lighter on the criticism and just get that, Okay, it's
about evolving and getting to what's next and building on
what we have now, rather than just oh, I've seen
this movie a million times before, break it down, start over. Well,
it's like everything else.

Speaker 3 (45:07):
We talk about how miserable everything is, and that we
look around and say, well, the rest of the world
they ate so great. Right, So yeah, when we look
at this particular game, right, going into a prevent defense
against this squad, bad job, great aggressiveness early on Harry
Kane on the side of a milk carton wasn't involved

(45:27):
in a whole punch. The fact that Argentina, in theory
as you go back through the Subruta film, should have
been playing with ten men for the entirety of the
game after a third minute punched to the back of
the head by the guy that eventually scored the equalizer.
How about that if you want to go deep deep
dive there for you, Fernandez, go look it up. You

(45:48):
can find the video everywhere it's rolled through. And then
Messi steps on the guy's foot before retreating to the
ball before just one of the great killer crosses that
we've seen. I do like the fact that you are
really just becoming Captain America. Here you were dressing up
like Ddrich Bader in Napoleon Dynamite this week.

Speaker 1 (46:09):
How wish I could get a pair of those pants.
We could probably get you one by the end of
the weekend.

Speaker 3 (46:13):
If I go down to Venice Beach, I bet you
I could find him, even if I had a guy
him off, a guy walking down the boulevard.

Speaker 1 (46:19):
You think someone's gonna come after you when I'm wearing
these bad boys, Come on, That's what I mean. We
could go find that friend of mine.

Speaker 3 (46:27):
In the larger Twitter verse kind of thing. We've had
some great back and forth about his role as Batman,
and of course me forever trying to get American Housewife
another season.

Speaker 1 (46:37):
But all of that for England. Yeah, yeah, you saw
the papers right.

Speaker 3 (46:43):
Everything about Harry Kane and calling him out, and certainly
coach say, well, you only blame my strategy.

Speaker 1 (46:50):
Because we lost.

Speaker 3 (46:51):
Like, yeah, coach, that's usually how it works if in
the end you fail and melt down horribly.

Speaker 1 (46:58):
It happens in the knockout round.

Speaker 3 (47:00):
Goals by Argentina before the seventy ninth minute, two goals
after the seventy ninth minute.

Speaker 1 (47:07):
Want to guess how big that number is? Oh? Yeah,
forty seven goals after the seventh's pretty.

Speaker 3 (47:13):
Good, fuzzy math. But number nine, number nine, Yeah, that's it.
Nine goals after seventy ninth minute. So you might have
looked into your scouting reports and kind of scene. As
long as that little guy still around and working on
on the on the ball, you're in trouble.

Speaker 1 (47:29):
Period. If I thought for a second and it's like
people forget that this is how the World Cup went,
like like it's like I think people have that fuzzy
memory now, like going, wait, the memories changed. It's a
science fiction movie. Yeah. We played terrible. No, we played
great in the in group play. We played terrific. In
group play. We had one of the top offenses in

(47:51):
all the world, better than the top forty teams. Great.
We played a great game to get to the sixth
We're a top fifteen team and we're looking to get
in the top ten, which puts us in position to
win the World Cup. That's not impossible. It's we weren't
at the place where it's all melted down, you know,
tear it down and start over. I get that we
thought we were there, and people thought they were after
the game against Belgium, because there were expectations and we

(48:13):
expected things, and mentally the team wasn't there. I'm not
saying they didn't throw up on themselves. They did, but
it's not like those problems are just isolated to us.
I mean, look at I mean again, England and France
and Norway and Brazil are gonna say they're gonna be
talking about this World Cup and ruining their chances. Are
are we going for? Do we have the right players?
Do we have the right coach?

Speaker 3 (48:34):
Like?

Speaker 1 (48:34):
All of these problems are still gonna happen, man, I mean,
it's not like we're alone with this. So get that. Hey,
we're a top fifteen team. We're looking to move up
into the top ten, and it's not like, hey, I'm
seeing every four years we're playing a little bit worse,
a little bit worse. We did things we haven't normally
done in this World Cup, right, So so get that
when you see the best teams in the world do

(48:55):
this that Oh maybe we're not as bad off as
you think we are. I mean, I love that's it
if not saying you don't need more, Right, But what
do I say, Balligan and Tillman and Freeman. You build
around those, wing them and everything else is open, right
because the Golden Generation hasn't come through it we expect.
But okay, it's normal evolving of what is next. Keep
Poachatino right, give him whatever you need to. He got

(49:17):
the team in the right spot. Look at where they were. Yeah,
I get that we were all disappointed. But when you
look at the results of this World Cup and you
take everything into account, yeah, oh, all of a suddenly,
maybe it's not as bad as we thought it was.

Speaker 3 (49:29):
If we work really hard, maybe people will fall back
into us. Look as we always do TV movies, music.
I'll give you a quote from a legend to really
make this punctuate this statement. Quote, always going to be
an uphill battle. Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose. Ain't
about how fast I get there. It's all about it.

(49:50):
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb.
That's right, Miley Cyrus.

Speaker 1 (49:55):
Everybody's oh there you go, way to go man, you
throw in some Miley race. Yeah, and you read that
very I was very dramatic. Well, I mean that was it'sdematic.

Speaker 3 (50:06):
I mean it's really a song that when I'm on
a run or on a workout, I mean, and it
comes on, it pushes you through that next four minutes.

Speaker 1 (50:15):
I thought, you're gonna give me a little, very very
very dramatically of I hopped off the plane at Lax
with my jeans and a card again Welcome to the
land of fame, excess. It's good. How can I ever
fit in Spack? Why spa?

Speaker 3 (50:31):
Yeah, I don't have the one about getting off a
plane with a raccoon yet, but I'm working on it.

Speaker 1 (50:37):
I'm telling you Guardians of the Galaxy for they were
shooting that and Holin's gonna be in it. That's what
you know.

Speaker 3 (50:41):
That place sold out of raccoons, and they shipped a
bunch in Norway after this showed up.

Speaker 1 (50:46):
We're all sold out. We got nothing the raccoon anymore,
but someone to walk in going I gotta get when
the sign says, we're all out of raccoon.

Speaker 2 (50:52):
Sorry, manager, We're working to curate some more. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason's Show with Mike
harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (51:08):
Well, it figures on the night, okay, the real second
half of Major League Baseball begins, the Mets go wing
to tonight since the All Star Break with the best
record in Major League Baseball, it figures that we get
a crazy golf story that has taken the world by storm.
And honestly, Mike, I love this. I can't. I can't
get enough of this Bryson d Shambo story.

Speaker 3 (51:30):
I really can't well the fact that you get into
the last of the majors kind of quietly right because
you got the World Cup, You've got all these other stories, Lebron,
so many other things taken up the oxygen and here
we are, Hey, wait a minute, don't forget about us
and one of the guys who's one of the most controversial, outspoken,

(51:50):
in this case, demonstrative and being lampooned everywhere kind of golfers.

Speaker 1 (51:55):
So what happened that has Bryson d Chambeau being the
story in the sports world that everybody is talking about. Look,
he's one of the best golfers in the world. He
has been for the last few years now. Today at
the Open Championship, he was assessed a two stroke penalty
for allegedly improving his lie in the grass before his
second shot on the fifth hole. So this is the

(52:17):
thing is d Chambeau was making a big run. He
had moved into second place, he was seven under part
He's making a big run, and all of a sudden, well,
he hits his t shot a lit little bit off
course right, didn't like exactly where he hit it, so
far right that he had to hit a provisional just
in case he couldn't find his ball. So, okay, this
is what I'm doing. Great, We've seen this many times.
So he goes to find his ball in the area

(52:39):
where he thinks it is, and he walks in there
and he starts stomping around, and all of a sudden,
it's a controversy, and Royal and Ancient penalized him two
strokes for trying to improve his lie, trying to improve
his situation. It's a really complicated set of rules that
golf has had about improved your lie, improving your stance,

(53:01):
improving the area of your intended swing, intended backswing, whatever
it was. So you're not allowed to do that, and
he gets a two stroke penalty. He is so upset
by it that he originally threatened to not play tomorrow,
even though he's in striking distance. You know, he's four
strokes back. He's got two days left to go. Now,
he threatened to not play, although it looks like cooler

(53:22):
heads have prevailed, and he puts a post on social
media about an hour or so ago saying, hey, he's
moved on from it, ready to go, let's go. So
it looks like he's gonna play in round three. But man,
a two stroke penalty for d Chambeau for what he did.
And I mean, when these stories come up, I can't
get enough of them, because this is where golf fans
that you never hear from it. All that know, all

(53:43):
the obscure rules, that are the ones that call into
the network broadcast the tournament, going ah, that's an illegal
improvement of a lie. That cannot do that. I look
at the rules and the subsid here. Nobody has to
worry about people calling in from home to say that's
at more than the PGA Tour, more than majors do

(54:04):
it is it is an insane history. You want to
go back and look at what some of the calls
out there that people lost strokes for. I remember one time,
I think Craig Stadler. I think it was Craig Styler
lost lost a stroke because he put a towel down
because he wanted to keep his pants clean, kneeling in
like some mud to take a shot. Nope, can't do that.
Improving your stance. I'm trying to keep my pants clean. Nope,

(54:26):
improving your stance. And he gets a penalty. I mean,
there are so many wacky penalties here, and this just
adds to it because here we are in the middle
of a major where d Chambeau could have met could
be the little making a run. Maybe he loses by
two strokes at the end, and all of a sudden
it's the biggest story in the world. But man, all
of a sudden, the Open Championship has a lot of
juice going in the final two days.

Speaker 3 (54:46):
Well, you know me like I like chaos, So this
gave us a chaos quotient that if you just let
the auto play go once you go down the rabbit
hole of watching the original footage and then how the
animated discussion after to the fact that folks already had
the AI weed whacker out.

Speaker 1 (55:06):
There with him. It's like, look, he's clearly improving his
lie and he's.

Speaker 3 (55:09):
Gottay a machine like he's taken care of a you know,
a football field. But all of that, it's in some
of the term dereliction of duty if they didn't assess
the two stroke penalty, all of that, and even in
the uh the spokesman's words, even if the advantage is unintentional,

(55:31):
which is clear here.

Speaker 1 (55:32):
It's like, no, I don't know that that'sessarily so clear.

Speaker 3 (55:34):
But I like the fact that you're giving him, you know,
just like a little bit of a weasel word kind
of breakdown of it to give him, Well, you didn't
give him the benefit of the doubt because you assess
the penalty.

Speaker 1 (55:46):
But in your post in your PostScript, you're you're being kind.
Here's here's the thing. Let let let's be honest. Okay,
anybody who's ever seen a golf tournament, you know what
Bryson D. Chambau is trying to do. You know, He
is trying to find a way to improve his lie
just by stomping on the grass, knowing that wherever I
find my ball, I'm gonna take a swing, and I

(56:07):
don't want to hit grass, right. I mean, he knows
what he's doing. He's been on a golf course a
couple of times. Usually when this happens to players, they
go into an area and they're very gentle and ginger
because you don't want to step on the ball, you
don't want to move it inadvertently, you don't want to
do any of that. He'd already hit a provisional shot.
You watch it. Who walks that way? Nobody? He knows.
The guy knows what he's doing. He knows it. I'm

(56:27):
gonna walk in and pretend like, oh, I'm just walking
into No one walks that way. Zombies when they are
bitten in any movie, don't walk that way. When they're
walking trying to kill people. They walk even a little
bit slower and they just kind of shuffle their feet.
But he comes in and he is stomping on the
tall grass, knowing that if my ball is here, I'm
gonna take a swing out of it, and I want

(56:48):
to make sure that I'm not swinging back on the grass.
I'm not swinging on the grass, and I follow through.
He knows what he's doing. Now we can argue the
rule and how ridiculous it is, but these rules have
been in place for a long long time. But for
a second, he knows what he's doing. He knew he
was trying to improve his life. He was just mad
he got caught and he got a two stroke penalty.
That's all it was. Because anybody, any golfer, is telling
you the truth, anybody's ever played, That's exactly what he

(57:11):
is doing by stomping around that way, trying to flatten
all the grass. I'm surbab to just walk up with
a with a with a lighter and go, I'm just
gonna burn this grass down here and then my ball
is up good, hit it right. I could do that right.
I'm standing there. He's rubbing two sticks together to get
the smoke going before you get it. He absolutely is
doing that. Everybody knows that's what he's doing. Well, he
just had that little step back into the fescue.

Speaker 3 (57:33):
By the way, more times you will hear the word
fescue in the next twenty four hour.

Speaker 1 (57:39):
Fescue is a great word. Swale and fescue are the
two best words in the English language, and I love
you only get them at the Open Championship. No, that's it, right.

Speaker 3 (57:47):
And then well, like I said with the auto auto
play on some of the video reactions, now you're getting
the English commentators in and they're having no no, taking
no food with the Shenanigans rice in Deshambeau. And then
he was out on the course at like ten thirty
eleven o'clock this evening hitting balls.

Speaker 1 (58:07):
Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna go hit some balls, guys. I'm
just gonna go warm up here. But okay, all right,
that's not sit here. I didn't do anything. I mean,
so obviously he was trying to do this right. And
then I think my favorite part of this story, Mike,
is that because you know, officiating has been the the
uh watchword in sports really a lot over the course
of the past couple of months. You talk about the
NBA playoffs and into the into the World Cup. But

(58:29):
I like how people are pointing out, oh, John Rahm
didn't get a penalty for throwing his club because he
threw a club after a bad shot today. But d
Chambeau gets this. I feel like I'm back in the
NBA Finals. How does Wemby not get a flagrant for this?
But Karl Anthony Towns gets called for this foul? Like
it's everywhere? Man, this is an absolute epidemic. I'm a
I'm back watching the NBA Finals again. How is this

(58:50):
a foul but this isn't a foul? How is this
a red card but this isn't a red card? How
is this a penalty? But how is this not a penalty?
This absolutely fat?

Speaker 3 (59:00):
Yeah, no, like adding value and the ROMs story gets
to go under the radar. But you know, like you said,
plenty of folks, I'm sure we're dialing up that number
that they have memorized. Unlike all those of their friend's family.
You know, they might have forgotten the number to nine
one one, I don't know, but they know how to
get in touch with the golf officials to make sure

(59:21):
that things are adjudicated properly.

Speaker 1 (59:24):
I mean, this is just a fantastic story. This is
about this.

Speaker 3 (59:27):
Right in the middle of the last major of the year,
we get, hey, here's a gift for you. Here's a
guy kind of walking around, and then we decide you
know what does stomping mean?

Speaker 1 (59:37):
Like, well, if you just walk very I mean, he's
a big man. It's like, no, you know who, he's
walking like harmon, He's walking like at the beginning of
a w w EM. I'm not going back because when
when the gut, when like Andre the Giant used to
walk around like that or Hulk Hogan used to walk
around like that in the ring, when they would just
stomp around with their boots to make real big noises.
Sure the you know, so they're all wow that so

(59:59):
it sounded really menacing when they walked like he's wwe
walking through this like I mean, come on, man, everybody
just to just own it, just like okay, you know it.
Two stroke pats. I think it's too much whatever you
want to say about it. But to sit here and go, oh,
I didn't I don't know. I wasn't doing anything. How
could you prove that. I can't believe there's as many
people defending him as there are on social media for this.

(01:00:20):
I'm like, this is pretty bleep and obvious that he
was trying to flatten the grass to help himself out.
If he was taking a shot out of there, they
were talking about the sanctity of the game again.

Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
You know it's the uh not necessarily that you have
to have intent, because they made sure to say that.

Speaker 1 (01:00:37):
You know, it's not about intent. But for Deschambeau, the
other thing.

Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
Is I like the as he started to assess where
he had to hit it, taking those baby steps back
to bend the fescu back just yeah, yeah, just a
little bit, yeah, just enough, catching the back of the
quads and whatever, just so it's bent down enough. Like well,
the verticality of his shot. He would not have his No,
he played this. He tried to be coy about it

(01:01:04):
and got God. I mean like, no matter how much
you're gonna try to argue it away, I mean, the videotape.

Speaker 1 (01:01:09):
Does not lie. No, I mean, look that that's exactly
what I was now these and that's what I love
about golf because these rules, Like I wouldn't be surprised
if this was something that initially came up because somebody
texted a phone number or or emailed in, because what
was that story about. Was it fifteen years ago when
someone called it to the Master's broadcast and said, hey,

(01:01:31):
you're not you're not broadcasting, and those are not. Those
are taped bird sounds, and the whipper wills are not
are not native to the Georgia area, And it's like,
what are you doing And he realized, oh no, no,
we actually were doing that. Yeah, we put in birds on.
We don't think anybody would notice. Yeah, no, it's okay.
Like this has a long history and if you if
you have some time tonight, and I'd say, go back

(01:01:52):
just like google weird golf rule history and you'll see
some crazy ass stuff where it's like, oh my god,
this guy lost a stroke for this. This person lost
a stroke for this, Like it's it's insane the number
of times this happens and the number of people that
find a way just golf fans to call the production
truck brut Hello, yeah, production truck. Yeah, how you doing this?

(01:02:15):
Is Jim? Jim? Who is this executive producer? Producer? Who
are you? Oh no, no, I'm just a golf and
I'm watching from Sue Falls And yeah that's a penalty
there on d Chambeau Like he can't do that, what
are you talking about? Yeah no, I just saw it
right here. Yeah what he did in the woods right there,
you can't do Oh okay, all right, that's great. I mean, yeah,
I mean the fact that that golf can be checked

(01:02:37):
by the average fan at home. I mean I think
maybe more sports need that. Like I think the NBA
playoffs would be officiated a little bit more fairly if
you let fans actually call and way in and say, uh,
we're gonna make sure these calls are right, maybe that
would help a little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:02:50):
Well. I mean, once upon a time we had the
ratings books, so you help that way. But now if
you can actually officiate from home, it's next level. I mean,
yesterday we asked where that intersection was of divorced couples
that would later remarry, and came to a bunch of
the six to ten percent. Now, I don't think they
thought in the Masters or any other tournament that there

(01:03:12):
was a huge intersection between birders and golf fans.

Speaker 1 (01:03:17):
So I wonder what that intersection is.

Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
If we get that together nothing else, go back fifteen
years and go watch the Big Year with Owen Wilson
and Steve Martin and Jack Black.

Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Oh man, I mean, I mean this is this is now.
Given the Open Championship, so much juice going into it,
and again I'm stunned that it became this big a
deal on social media. I'm like, wow, Like, we got
a lot of crazy stuff going on tonight, right, Lebron
is saying things like trust the process. Caitlin Clark goes
absolutely bananas on the court tonight with forty five points.

(01:03:47):
Tom Brady is slapping logan Paul wanting fights in the
WWE and yet twice and look at what what's this
guy doing? What is he what does he think he's doing?
Stopping road? What's going on? What are we doing? Can
stop around like that?

Speaker 3 (01:03:58):
That's belty just because remember this is also a guy
who's a tour villain, right, he moves the needle in
terms of being one of the greats. As soon as
he signed up, and you know he took that money
from Live, that was the end of him. So there
were plenty of folks rooting, cheering and maybe doing a
little dance, maybe maybe stomping around on grass of their

(01:04:21):
own for his downfall.

Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
Oh yeah, I mean it. This is just a fantastic story, man,
I really and I don't know if I want him
to lose by two strokes. I don't know if I
want him to lose by a stroke or I don't
know if I want him to win, like I don't know,
Like they're like, what what what am I rooting for
at this point?

Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
Like you want him to get to a playoff and
then it does it works itself out from there.

Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
Or he would get to a playoff, right he gets
I think if he.

Speaker 3 (01:04:44):
Gets to the playoff and then and then he loses,
then that or wins. Either way, he's still got to
perform one more time. Yeah, and then he lose it.
He goes, I shouldn't even playing, you know, take two
strokes off my score. Look where I would be? Look
where I be now? I will say, there are two
days left in the turn.

Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
This is not This happened on seventeen and all of
a sudden he went from being two strokes back and
now he's four strokes back. He can't Nott's there's a lot,
as my dad likes to say, and this is very
after the situation, there's a lot of golf left. My
dad likes to say that about life. A lot of
golf left, A lot of golf left. What are you
talking about, dad, now? A lot of golf left? Okay, right?
Sometimes it works when my dad says that like, if

(01:05:23):
it's early in a game and the Yankees are losing
like eight nothing, go ah, a lot of golf left.
A lot of golf left. Sometimes when at dinner and
I go, oh, Dad, they didn't make your dinner, right,
He goes, yeah, I'm gonna send it back. I said, okay,
do you want to get something else? No, a lot
of golf left.

Speaker 3 (01:05:35):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:05:35):
I don't know that that's not applicable to the situation,
but okay, I get what you're saying. Did you talk
to him about this one? Yeah? There is no. No,
I haven't yet. I haven't yet. No, no, no, I'm
sure he will. This is something where, to be quite honest,
this is something that my dad, being the incredible golf
in that he is like, this is not something that
will text about. This is something that he's gonna come

(01:05:56):
over tomorrow after getting his thoughts together and can the
first thing I'm gonna say is, hey, Dad, Hey you
see Bryson yesterday? And then boom, and then we're gonna
have the conversation about There you go, like, this is
not something that I that that he's this is a text.
This is where no, I'm gonna come over and talk
about it in person, I guess because he figures, you know, hey,
I could text my son, or I could I could
call him, I could listen to the radio show, or

(01:06:17):
just go to his house because you know, like I
have that because you know, I'm his dad. So I
could walk in and just we could do a show together,
Like we're gonna do a show about Bryson DJ moo,
what happened? Like my dad?

Speaker 3 (01:06:25):
You ever set up microphones and pretend like you're actually
broadcasting from home when when Wall comes over?

Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
Uh? Well no, then you time him out? Oh sorry,
Walt heartbreak? No no no, I I well, well you
don't have the setup because you know, you and I
we still do shows for everybody, still does shows from
home once in a while. But like, oh I can't
talk to my dad. I'm gonna pretend I'm doing a
show and I'll just come in and stuff. Yeah yeah,
talking about stuff dad, Sorry, yeah, listen. So, uh let's
get into the Mets bullpen here? Are you really talking

(01:06:53):
about the Mets bullpen on national radio? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Big.
A lot of people calling in want to talk about
AJ Minter and Brooks Railey and where they could go
see the phone call lined up. Dadude, Yeah, I'll talk
to you after, Okay, all right, thanks Dad? Al right? Great?

Speaker 4 (01:07:04):
Do you not see the red on air sign in
the hallway?

Speaker 6 (01:07:07):
Dad?

Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
Oh no, I don't know, man, but maybe I should.
That'd be something to have that.

Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
That'd be great, blinking red light in the hallway. Nope,
can't bother, Jason. And then all you're doing is sitting
there with your feet kicked up, reading the magazine or.

Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
Still on the air. Yeah, I don't hear anything. Uh,
Harmon's talking. It's a Big Bears topic. He's talking a lot. Yeah,
that's that's that's what's happening. Dad, can't help. Don't open
the door. Don't open the door. And over the door.
It's now one in the morning.

Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
Hey Ben called out, I mean, and they couldn't get
his connection right, so we just had to keep going.

Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
I mean, what do you want?

Speaker 5 (01:07:42):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
Man, I love this. I love this. This is glorious.
You know he absolutely did it all on purpose.

Speaker 3 (01:07:49):
Do you think he stomped really mad when he was
in the video review booth like you did at a
bad grass.

Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
I'm waiting to see him say that. That's how he
just walks regularly and there for these some kind of
leak footage of him just walking down the street, and
that's how he walks. This is how I walk. What
are you talking about? This is just some guy walking
down the street. That's that's taking video. This is how
I walk. I just stop everywhere. I just stop where
I'm walking.

Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
Is this where you do the AI superimposed where he's
now a member of the Jets or the Sharks and
he's actually dancing down the end.

Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
He wouldn't want to be a bad connotation with the
Jets jet. I'd rather be a Shark Jet show. Yeah,
Jets sho
