Kyle Schwarber has seven home runs, He's got three swings left.
He's amping up the crowd as the home run Derby
reaches a fever pitch. You know it seemed nicely done.

That movie with Jimmy Fallon all those years ago, Andrew
Barrymore Schwarber seems like he's tailored his uniform now to
show folks that he's more swollen than the bulk Master
that they used to call him, right because he used
to be equated to Babe Ruth from the idea of
a he's a bit bulky because you know, they wore

those those jerseys and the pants made you look about
fifty pounds heavier than you actually were. So I think
Schwarber's decided, you know what, I want to show folks
I'm in shape because there's always this controversy like I'm
gonna break down because I'm not taking care of myself. Yeah,
I got so far now again, we thought we could
potentially get a couple of Phillies in there. But Bryce

Harper maybe he's no One sent him in a message saying, hey, Bryce,
you know watching a too soon for that? Oh very
very much. So, I mean there's there there will be lawyers.
That is a situation that is quite unsavory right now.
But look, like I said, we're into the final four
now and Schwarber has just finished his round. My guy
didn't make it, and uh well we got kamon Aro

coming up. Well, that's my other Camano because that's that's
my mom's guy, Caminarie. I got a little tiery when
they retired Longoria's number yesterday there in Tampa. But I
mean Canyonaro came Caminero, like he should really come out
to that, like that should be it. So it should
be the Kenyon Arrow music from the Simpson like you
should come out to They should just play that like

that ten second jingle. It's a dear smacking killing machine. Well,
you know at the end there's the full extended version
is at the end of that episode if you let
it play all the way through as the credits roll. Well, look,
but so far a couple of things from the Home
Run Derby. One thing that's surprising, but but it's kind
of fun to see. But the first thing is, here's
your Home Run derbutes on Netflix. Yep, right, yeah, I know,

put plenty of people my dad, Hey, where's the Home
Run Derby? No, that that really did take a lot
of folks. I surprised it. It's like, what the hell?
We had a poll in the house today with with
my wife and Zoe and ies. Okay, what time does
Grandpa text me? What where's the Home Run Derby? Over under? Yeah,

I said, I said three thirty. Pam said no, no, no,
to be way earlier than that. He's going to plan
his days, he said, twelve thirty. He's always I'm gonna
go in the middle two thirty. Uh. It was. It
was kind of close between Zoe and I because it
was like a little bit after three. He said, Hey,
so where's the Where's the Home Run Derby? Dad? It's
on Netflix. See I figure it would have been like
four oh five because you would have had the the

pre show, Like I don't know how early that started
on Netflix, because that used to be a big pomp
and circumstance ceremony thing on on ESPN, where it'd be
a good two hours ahead of the first pitch. So
I figured maybe he'd creep closer to start time. Uh yeah,
you know. But the thing is like my dad is

now more of an early riser than he what you know,
he's in his late seventies now somewhere an early riser,
get out, get you know, doing stuff. So it's like
like early for him, Like he's seven eight o'clock like
now suddenly, because he goes to bed at like nine
and uh, and I just said, Okay, I said, so,
I said, you know, but he's gonna. I think he's
gonna go late. I think he's gonna be out doing
stuff today. He's at the whole weekend. He's gonna while
like I'm trying to figure out everything he's doing. Yeah,

when's he gonna get the text?

About for so, like I thought he would kind of
get to the point where Okay, I'm getting close to
gonna Yeah. But look, honestly, you know, watching it as
we have so far, and that's that's the first big
question is Okay, here's a home run Derby on Netflix,
and this is the correct verdict for the home run
Derby on Netflix? Is that the home run Derby? And

how we've seen it's coverage tonight, it's using MLB network
people Orange shaht he was just interviewing uh players on
the field and and you know, it's like it was
on ESPN the last few years. The home run Derby
is fine, right, It's not the worst home run derby
you've ever seen in your life. And Netflix is ruining it.
And I keep getting promos for the next season of three.

Body problem. I don know what no you're not getting
any of that. Oh this is the best I want
to get. I'm so glad it's away from ESPN. Nah,
like I said, you kind of miss Bourban a little bit.
I will have more on that in a minute, But
like overall, like, yeah, it's fine, like the home run Derby,
not that it's seen its day, but as far as
the popularity of it and how and how watchable it is,

it kind of is what it is at this point.
You can you can change the rules all you want,
and I like the rule changes to stop guys from Hey,
hit twenty eight home runs in the second round and boy,
he's the big story, but of course he's got nothing
left and you know, he loses and somebody else wins.
We're not even gonna talk about like it kind of
you know, I like that rule change to kind of
protect the players. Maybe you can end with a flourish
more than you're ending with just this guy's just not
(05:51):
as tired as the other guy. But overall, like, yo, okay,
it kind of is what it is. Right when you
get big names in there, it's kind of fun for
a little while, but overall, the you know, you can't
ask it to be something. It's not. It's not you know,
home field advantage in the World Series. Now, maybe if
we got a tied All Star Game tomorrow, another home
run derby to break it like we had last year.
But you know, overall, it's kind of a fun night
(06:13):
just to celebrate baseball and and be that event that
after a hot day doing whatever you're doing. Hey, I'm
just gonna sit back at night and watch people at
home runs. I'm just gonna watch the Dingers for a while.
And that's kind of what it is. Kind it kind
of is what it is. I think that's the correct
verdict of the derby, especially the derby on Netflix, because
it's been fine. It's been great, it's not been awful,
it's been fine. Yeah. In the in the end, it's
(06:34):
guys swinging for the downs on every pitch, which is
pretty much major League baseball in twenty twenty six anyway, Right,
That's that's all we're ad. It's like it's the same
same swing that we have in most of these games.
The fact that you do have so much star power
is great, right that that adds a little bit of
juice to it. Be good to intersperse, you know, some

first half highlights and whatever, just kind of, you know,
give breathe in some life to what you may have
missed from the first season, first half of the season
as you go in. But the fact that Murakami came
back over the weekend to play for the White Sox
and was available for this is nice because he's he's
become one of those Darling signed the Jordan Brand deal

that that got announced today. You had Schwarver and and
Harper Caminaro, like all of these guys that are Kadam
and Arrow. Now we're gonna watch that video in the break.
But it's just that it's another piece that you check
the box. All right, we're at the midsummer this is
(07:37):
it Like yesterday we over the weekend we had the
draft into whatever, you know, all Star Sunday Night became.
But it doesn't have the same juice that it once
did because I think with a lot of these these extras,
it's the all right, yes and all right, it's the
improv version of everything we do with with sports of

all right, well, how do you up? I don't know.
The the home run ball is great, like the last
different colored baseball, make it, take it and hit as
many as you can. That's all fine and good. The
fact that you don't have the pitch clock is great,
although I think a couple of guys probably could have
used it earlier in the aforementioned Murakami And yeah, and
then it's Cagli Taglion and his dad went up there

going like, hey, let's get this done as fast as
we ca There's gonna be a little bit of a
rough you know, we're gonna have to figure things out first.
By eight minutes, and then Caglio comes in, it's like
four minutes in, I'm done. I'm done, like gone, Like
his dad's throwing as fast as he can get. It's
like you're watching Chris Sale. You're on the in an
(08:43):
actual major league game. Your time wasn't even as long
as Stairway to Heaven. And I don't mean the eleven
minute version. I mean like the edited seven minute version.
You could even make it that long. But my favorite
part of the derby, right, okay, go ahead, and this
is and this is part of the journey that we
have in this country with celebrity. Right. So, for the
longest time, Chris Berman's the big star at ESPN. How
(09:03):
many I've told you many stories working with him, you
know why Bermon impression is fantastic and disagree Berman's a
big well you know what, and they those guys TJ
can just like the Jets go fall off a cliff. Uh.
So you know he's a big star. But then the
Burman backlash comes and suddenly people on on social media,
(09:25):
I don't like Berman. I don't like this, the stick
that he has had for years, all the nicknames, the
back back, brack, prack, prag growing right, I don't like it.
And suddenly up ESPN, what do we do. We listen
to everybody on social media. So now they push Berman
out and he's a persona non grata. But now he's
coming back a little bit and he's doing a little
bit of Primetime with Booger McFarlane, which is awesome because
that was the show of record for so long in
(09:47):
the NFL. Right, But like everybody hated him, hated him,
hated him. Can't stand, can't stand, can't stand. But usually,
you know, we say, hey, sometimes you live long enough
to become the villain. Sometimes you go from the hero
to the villain. But you stick around long enough and
then suddenly, ah, people start to miss you again. When
I saw Chris Berman trending tonight, I said, oh my goodness, okay,
(10:09):
it's a number two. Was a number two trending topics
he did, did the Homo derby for so long, And
I said, many times, at least give Berman this, like
when when ESPN had it, they still had to give
him this, right, or Netflix should call and say, Chris
come up and do this in the ESPN would say, yes,
we're going to loan you him to do this for
for tonight, right, Just because I want to count how
many times over the course of a two and a
half hour event he says the word back up the
(10:31):
over under his six hundred and seventy four times. That's now,
that was only in the first round for me, I'll
tell you what, so that would have been a really
active colch Yeah, kid me. How many how many backs
from the beginning of the of the turment till the
end from the first he says the word back, Yeah,
cal she you could have made some money right when
Contres stepped into the box till the end of the yeah,

final swing. But I love the fact that I see
all and I see the quotes and it's all, Oh man,
I miss Berman, I really miss And that's the general
though most of the most you still get your odd
one now. Oh, I'm so glad, but generally everybody misses him.
And I thought that was really cool that here's you know,
people understand that, okay, there's there's you know, you love somebody,
you hate somebody. But I like the fact that everybody
(11:14):
seemed to, Oh, now, I really miss the guy. He
hasn't done it in a long time, because really, the
home Run Derby was a thing. He helped make it
a thing, right with all his calls a different home
run calls, he helped make it a thing, And so
I kind of dig that people miss him a little
bit with that right now. Selfishly, if I had known that,
i'd have called Netflix there here in la I just said, listen,
I'll come on as Berman and do it. You don't
(11:37):
even have to pay me, and I can, and I'll
just do it as Berman for two and a half hours.
I'll give you crazy nicknames. I will do it, and
I'll do his voice just like it is during the derby,
like when you get halfway through it all of a
sudden and I have no voice left. DJ backpack Pack
gone God like I'll even do that for you. I'll
do it again. You don't even have to pay me.
I will come and do it. I'll come sit in
(11:59):
your studios and l and I will do it for free.
Which would have happened first your voice would have started
to go or you would have been served decease and
desist letter by Berman's lawyers. Oh no, I think he
would have loved that. Well, if I can't do it,
at least Jason, who I worked with him, and he
is doing it for me like that, that'd be pretty cool.

I think part of what happened with with Berman also, though,
is all those years that you had the overnight where
they just rerun and I think they still do. I
can't claim to know their programming, but once upon a
time it was the rerunning of Sports Center all through
the night, which means if Berman was hosting, Oh yeah,
(12:36):
they got all for ten straight out, you got tons
of right and people thought he was chained to that desk. No, no, no,
it's just a repeat. Oh yeah, yeah, But if you
did it for the full night, that's a lot of Berman,
or even even the next day when they would replay
the home run derby going into the All Star game coverage.
But I can understand where there would be you know,
a little like like Dan hous his head backlash where
(12:58):
you had a lot of Berman because of the repeats. Yeah,
oh yeah, all of that. So like as he's the
number one guy, it's the all right, there's there's a lot.
I mean, you could change a channel. He may be gone,
but he may be gone one of the way and
they might have another anchor at the desk when you

tune back. One of the best Berman stories out tid
I've never told this one. This is always it's just fun.
This is this, this is not this is just fun.
So when I started as a production assistant at ESPN,
and you knew you were editing a highlight for Boomer
to read, and you have these things called shot sheets
where you have to write down what was going on
on the play so he could so the anchor can
read along with it. So it's so that you know,
(13:40):
you get the shot sheets right. So at this point,
Berman's how this is mid nineties. Berman's a household name.
He is the biggest star. ESPN has all of this,
so you know all the players in the game, and
you go, oh, this is the nickname he has for
this guy, this name after this guy. Right. So, so
I have my highlight my baseball game, whatever it was,
and and I and I and I, you know, write
in the names of the player. And I put his
(14:01):
nickname in there, you know, for you know, obviously, you know,
to help him write whatever. So I put it in there,
and and and we go up. And what you do
is you take the tape back when it was on tape.
You would take your tape and your shot sheet and
you would go up to the to the anchor and
you would say, here, here's your highlight of this game.
And they would you would stand next to them and
they would read the highlight on the shot sheet along
with the with the watching the tape, so they knew
(14:22):
it was going on. If something happened they had a question,
you could tell them what was going on here. Oh yeah,
he came out of the game in the seventh inning.
This is a new picture in the seventh okay, great,
And they'll write a note in thatching. So you sit there.
So I give the shot sheet to Berman, right, and
I forget what baseball it was, you know, I don't
know who it was, but you know, he's doing the
whole thing. And here the first inning, you know, home run,
you know whoever, you know whatever it was, and I
(14:43):
put the nickname in there. Any second well, you know,
second inning, double down the line, nickname any any presses
stop on the tape. He looks at me, says, don't
don't worry about I'll put the nicknames in. Don't worry.
I don't worry about writing the nicknames in. I'll do that.
I said, Okay, okay, you know boom nope, okay, great, right, okay,
all rights place. Imagine I'm just writing in his nick names.
(15:05):
I'll i'll do that. I'll do the nickname. I got
the nicknames. Okay, just just so you know, I'll do that.
I'll do that. And it prompt him to put in
some new nicknames. Did he give a guy? And oh oh.
He was always very open, like if you had a
nickname for him, he would love he would love to
have it. There was there was one kid one time,
I'm like, we're now coming up with parody song. Yeah,
oh yeah, where he wants to kill you. He was
(15:25):
so nervous because the Mets had this Picture's name was
Jason Hackamie who came up and he pitched like for
a couple of years of the Mets, he's like one
of there. This in the late nineties, he was one
of their you know, maybe the next great picture. But
Jason hackemy and he says, I got a nickname for Berman.
I said, what he says, Jason, how can we be
lovers if we can't be friends? I said, oh my god,
that's awesome. You got to tell him that. And he
was so nervous about telling him. I said, no, of course,
(15:47):
he'd love he'd love that if at least it shows
you're thinking about He was so nervous all day. And
he told him about it, and he again had and
we're like, he goes and and and the guy told
me he said he liked it. We'll see. I don't know.
And he actually went on the air. He says, Jason,
how can we be lovers if we can't be friends?
And he says, nice job, Josh. And because that was
an so that was pretty cool. Yeah, so I thought
(16:09):
that was pretty cool. That is pretty cool. But he
was always if you had an idea, Now he didn't
always use it, but if you had an idea, and
you like for a nickname, and he is, oh, okay,
all right, I'll do it now. I feel like I
know it so well. I can, I can, I can
do it better than him, you know. I mean we
got to play the day coming up next. I got
a great one for you, okay, and a great and
I can't wait. I thought about it on the way
in I'm waiting with Ben Breath. It's great enough that

it's so good, but it's such a stretch that it
fits perfectly. I just know whenever we get this point
in the calendar, and you and I've been doing this
show here at Fox Sports Radio, blessed to do it,
hope to continue to do it for many many years.
There's always another Berman story that comes along with the
home run derby. And I love that so many people
are embracing, like you said, number two trending today, all
(16:50):
positivity because we're all kids of that era. As Berman
was the lead to all of these things. The nicknames. Hell,
they came out with the Tops Trading card this past
year that had an insert set that were all the
nicknames for all those players, for Bo Jackson, for Greg

you know, Appomattox course, I mean all of those things
that the celebration of him. I think we and our
media could could do better and better served to remember
how much he was grinding in those early years to
give us content and to make ESPN a thing. Exit

what it's going on when he does. Okay, the man
hits Dingers. Yeah, I mean, you know, big round eleven
home runs in fifteen swings, you know, big rauph Philadelphia
very excited. Bryce Harper's going nuts. They're backing the Pennant
race now because you know, they fired their manager when
they were supposed to be they were supposed to Now
they're catching up to the Braves, like, oh gee, look
at that. Everybody done maddingly legend in Philadelphia as well

as New York. But look, Schwarver's just that one guy, right,
White Sox fan Southsider. It was always the guy, like
even when he was on the Cubs, Like, I really
like that guy. But I mean even when he was
a Cub and winning a World Series Cub, we were
doing the shows and I'm like be gradually like I
like that guy. Yeah, I kind of liked all those

guys that were on the twenty sixteen team, but that
was the guy and then I had to watch him.
Now now he's in the NL last Tim and I
gotta watch him. He said, he's impossible, not like Shober
does his work and leading up into the aultar right.
Look because he was on a heater coming into me,
coming into this event right like he's been killing it
the last couple of weeks. As the Phillies roll on.

He got the third deck. Yeah, yeah, dude, he hit

greater than anything anybody else did in that round. Jack
Jack cat gone home run. Uh so yeah, I mean, look,
it's a hitters ballpark. It always has been, you know CB.
So it's kind of fun seeing this. You know again,
it's fine. It is. It's the home run derby is fine.
It's fun. It's not gonna change your life. It's like saying, hey,

did you want to have something that that a that
a chef really recommends something, some great recipe you saw
somebody cooked some recipe the guy fier, he said, was
the greatest thing you ever ate. Yeah, I like that.
Or just like a bunch of popcorn. I like a
bunch of popcorn. Okay, here you go. That's what. You're
just having a bunch of popcorn right now. It's having
a bunch of popin just filler, eh, you know, like
when I you know, you know, I read all the time,

and and like, you know, I'll read. I'll read some
books that are here's a great reviewed book that that's
come out this year on the list of the ten
best books. It's a great war book, or it's a
great book about space trout whatever it is. And like,
but sometimes I just want a real trashy thriller. That's it.
It's like, okay, because you know, I read one of
those books, I remember those five hundred page spanning where

because I because because I just read Buckeye, which one
of the best books I read in the last few years,
and it spans two wars. Uh small town in Ohio.
How how these two families deal with two wars? It
was an incredible book. But now I'm like, now I
just want a nice trashy thrill. So I read a
Freedom McFadden book. I'm like, okay, I finished in the day.
I'm like, okay, great. But sometimes I'm in the mood
for you know, okay, sometimes it's okay to know, hey,
I want something that really is going to just change

my way of thinking and change my way of life.
So that just does one pop porn or read a
Freedom McFadden book. Now, I'm good, but that's it. Sometimes
you just need some jackass re television film, book or
in this case, I mean, this is about as close
as you get to an at the actual sport in
a competition like this, Right, it's more more like a
(22:52):
baseball game than say, penalty kicks. You want war in
peace or you want the housemate. You can enjoy both,
enjoy both look depends which side of your brain you
want to feed. The housemaid gets married, the housemaid opens
an ice cream pall, or the housemaide buys a baseball team.
These are like curious George Titles does it. But while

we're continuing on here with the home Runner, the big
event this weekend was yet the second straight event in
MMA that landed with an absolutely I say, the third
straight event that ended as an absolute dud. Connor McGregor,
in his big comeback fight, hurts his leg on his
first kick the fight ends. He hasn't said exactly what
(23:35):
the injury was. You see a lot of people on
social media doctors saying looks like a torn acl but
he already said he's having surgery and he wants to
come back and fight again. And MMA and the UFC
and everything that goes along with it. It's now there's
some red lights blinking because it's almost like it's become
(23:57):
a legacy fight league because the last few events that
have drawn people either to watch it to talk about it,
that our echine getting eyeballs to it are all stunt fights. Right.
You had Ronda Rousey and Gina Carona who showed up
and it was eight seconds long. Gina Corona, I'm done.
And after eight seconds they're hugging and smiling. Boy, we
(24:17):
just made a lot of money. Yeah, and and and
it was thirteen seconds long. Right, Connor McGregor made a
lot of money. Done. You know, he's hurt, comes back,
he's not in shape to do it. You know, he
has his first fight in a long time. Like the
UFC and and mixed martial arts in general, they need
something like like like MMA is kind of in trouble,
I feel because they had a great run for a
(24:40):
long time when they were bringing homemade stars out and
whether it was like a guy like Randy Couture into
John Bones Jones and then the Ronda Rousey phenomenon. You
had a lot of bigs and Conno McGregor of course,
carrying the mail for as long as he did. You
had a lot of stars and MMA. You know, I
remember in the late aughts, you know, early early teens
where where people would go out Saturday nights just to

watch the UFC card at a bar and it's amazing,
I'm going out to watch it was so incredibly popular.
But now they've not been able to manufacture any more
stars and the legacy fights all land with a thud,
and people are smart and they see these as well.
What kind of shape was Connor McGregor in? Did Ronda
Rousey and Gina Carono really plan on having a long fight?

Did Carona really plan having a long fight? Like, I
can't believe I'm spending my time, devoting my time to
this where I'm sitting through a card, or I'm spending money,
or I'm going to it. However you're gonna consume it
and I get there and the big event is done
in a minute, right, Like, I don't think that you
can sustain that without star power anymore, and UFC is
(25:43):
in a tough spot right now. It's almost like they're
the PGA Tour post Tiger Woods, where how do we
stop losing viewers and and and stop losing relevancy because
Tiger Woods for so long brought that to you. But
this is kind of different because MMA was a Okay,
we like this, and whereas BGA toured to figure out
well can we sell Rory McElroy and Brooks Koepka and
(26:06):
d Chambeau and all of these guys, you know, Jordan
Speith for MMA, it's like, who do you sell now?
Like what do you do? Like? And when the last
two fights the biggest things you can do have been
these legacy fights where they've lasted eight seconds, I'm like, really,
like I think people walk away. When you walk away
from an event and you feel like you have a
bad taste in your mouth for whatever reason, you're not
(26:28):
going back to it right like like like I was
excited about the Ronda Rousey Gina Caronal thing and then
to watch how it came out and I said, Okay,
I've never fallen for that again. And I didn't fall
from the Connor McGregor this time, and I feel like
the people who are watching after every time, there's a
large group people that go, well, I'm not gonna devote
my attention, my time, my money, whatever, it's going to
be into that. And I feel like MMA is at
(26:49):
a real crossroads right now where they need some sort
of infusion of talent and star power. They need something,
They need something, or they're gonna be in a lot
of trouble. Well, I think it's kind of like boxing,
where you have a healthy layer if you're truly into
boxing or MMA, right, Patty Pimbler, it was immediately he
was watching out a monitor as McGregor went down. He goes, well,
(27:11):
your new face is right here. I'm right here, look
at me. Because he dispatched his opponent in no time
flat right, And he's got star power and he's got
some juice behind him, and all of that speaks with
the brogue, and if you follow MMA, he's got some juice.
But it's a matter of can you translate him to
that next the casuals, the folks that need the star power. Right,
(27:34):
Golf is in a pretty good spot, but you don't
have that guy who's the breakthrough. I have to watch
this event right, Scotti Scheffler is not that guy Roy McElroy.
You get a little bit of bounce, but when it's
Sunday and he's competitive and he's at the top of
the board, but it's that breakthrough, right boxing, how many
(27:55):
of these legacy Hey, let's match these guys up again.
We always knew what we were getting with Floyd down
the stretch. Okay, that's fine, technically he's doing what he
needs to, but he's not gonna go in for the kill,
right the de la Hoya back in the day, or
Pakia or all of those. Whether it's a one fight
too many with Rousi and Corono, is a payday. Connor
(28:16):
McGregor needed to pay day. I remember he had a
civil judgment against him. They didn't find him guilty of
criminal charges, but there was a whole assault rape accusation
out there. So the thirty two million dollars he made
certainly helps the bank account in that regard, and for
Dana White and company, it got it out a lot
of extra eyeballs. Fortunately, you know, whatever their television deal is, right,
(28:40):
you don't have to pay seventy for the pay per
view like he used to, so you at least didn't
get hooked for that. You could still go back to
whatever series or movie you're watching and be like, all right,
I'm getting my nine ninety nine worth for this month.
I didn't get even though I might have given them
some of my time, and you decide how much that's
worth to you. You didn't have to do the pay
per view thing because of the deal that they've brokeer.
(29:02):
But I get your point, right. You don't have that
star that's going to bring in and give you the
giant performance. That's why I guess the Pimblet undercard or
second main event was really the main event. What was
all said and done? Because McGregor goes in there decide
conspiracy wise, whether it was right or wrong? Should he
(29:23):
have fought? Was he in any condition to fight? Right?
It's like here he is going into a center, like
you start seeing all the here's the days leading up
to watch him with this limp? Did he need the
paycheck that much? Dana White said a lot of stuff
he didn't say. No. I think I think Dana White's
even You can tell by him he's a little nervous
just by hearing the way he talks about events and
certain things like you could tell after the short the
(29:46):
shortness of this event that he seems a little concerned,
you know, a minute like he seemed a little conabricating
information in terms of how popular and views like no,
we see how many views there were? Yes? So like yeah,
I mean, and there's a little bit to it in
terms of, you know, trying to figure out what that
next next level is. How do you keep the promotion growing, right,

because if you're not growing, you're not advancing, you're dying.

And now why is this a big deal? Well? Here
he was today talking about how excited he is about
the new pieces coming into the Lakers.

Yeah, I think they're good. I mean obvious, you know,
being with the guys that are leaving for you know,
a couple of years and then you know, Brown for
you know, five years. You know you hate to see
you know, guys, let that go. But you know, the
pieces that are coming in I'm very excited about and
you know, happy to get started kind of today and
see where it goes.

Okay, So now all right, well here's Austin Reeves talking
about this. Why this is a big deal. There is
no two on a team that has more pressure on
him this year than Austin Reeves with the Lakers. All Right,
the stars of the stuf like Brunson, Wemby, Kate Cunningham,
all the stars, you get it. But there's no one a.

There's no there's no sidekick, there's no second, there's no
two on a team that has more pressure than Austin Reeves.
And now you are seeing that when he talks, he
makes headlines. Right, this is this is the big basketball
headline of the day. Austin Reeves speaking last year at
this time, Austin Reeves speaking, but it's being played on
national on national television, on radio, on TV because Austin

Reeves has been elevated by the Lakers into the Scottie pitpen'
roll to Luka, doncig and forget about this team being
built around Luca, which, of course you're going to Luca
is the big star, but there's big stars across the league, right, Yeah,
the Nuggets are built around Jokis, right, The Knicks are
built around Brunson, kind of all the teams. The Celtics
are built around Tatum. We've seen this. But the Lakers
(34:22):
built this team, and they went out and signed a
lot of supplementary players because they thought and they have
the confidence that we're paying Austin Reeves he's the second
best player on this team. This is a huge risk
that the Lakers are taking. Not that I don't think
he's up for us and the Austin Reeves is the
hell of a player, but he's got to understand by
just by days like today, when he says something and
(34:43):
it becomes headlines, you have taken that step up in
the hierarchy. Now now you're not just hey, I'm the
third guy and I'm able to just hoop and Lebron
will bail us out and Luke will bail me out.
The Lakers were built, yes, around Luca, but they built
the team the way they did because you are gonna
be the that second big star, not just a nice
player who makes money and hits some shots, but you
(35:05):
are that second best player and the Lakers' fortunes will
go as he goes. If he has a terrific year,
Lakers will be fantastic. They'll be like they were during
that run last year. But if he's not, Lakers are
gonna be a team that struggles to get in the
playing round. Like there is no second best players, no
two on a team with more pressure on him. Where
the season go either way than Austin Reeves. Yeah, ccause
that old undrafted highest earning non drafted player thing that's gone.
(35:32):
That's gone. That's a nice little footnote, and it's something
at the end of his career. It's like, ah, you
overachieved great. At this point, the expectations are great because
it's tied to Lebron James. Right. That's the part of
it is how much was real imagined in terms of
retention of Lebron James. That's always gonna be there. They
forced him out, said they didn't need him back, and
(35:55):
you got this massive deal. Now you doing the old
Pippin to Jordan's Like Luca Dncis ain't won a damn thing,
so I he got to one. Yeah, oh no, no
he didn't. And whether he'll ever be healthy enough and
ready enough, you know, because it's the ten weeks. I'm
surprised you're not walking around with that shirt. I just

got my first NIX, my first Knick swag today. This
is the beginning of my Knicks rollout, my Knicks and five rollout. Yeah,
it's a rollout. Now, I gotta I gotta wait till
I get the other stuff. But I just got my

It might be Christmas time before the rest of that

I mean, look, the arrival of Kessler is huge because
that's the guy that Luca really wanted. But but you're

who's gonna get the credit for the winner loss right,
anything Denver does, it's all Jokic, no matter how much
those other guys, Jamal Murray and everybody else contributes. So

it'll be an interesting fall here around these parts. I mean,
as we broadcast from Los Angeles, plenty of Laker fans
here who were all excited that Lebron went away, and
we'll see what you ask for. You got two guys
at the head that don't play any defense. Walker Kestler's great,

That movie with Jimmy Fallon all those years ago, Andrew
Barrymore Schwarber seems like he's tailored his uniform now to
show folks that he's more swollen than the bulk Master
that they used to call him, right because he used
to be equated to Babe Ruth from the idea of
a he's a bit bulky because you know, they wore

those those jerseys and the pants made you look about
fifty pounds heavier than you actually were. So I think
Schwarber's decided, you know what, I want to show folks
I'm in shape because there's always this controversy like I'm
gonna break down because I'm not taking care of myself. Yeah,
I got so far now again, we thought we could
potentially get a couple of Phillies in there. But Bryce
(01:54):
Harper maybe he's no One sent him in a message saying, hey, Bryce,
you know watching a too soon for that? Oh very
very much. So, I mean there's there there will be lawyers.
That is a situation that is quite unsavory right now.
But look, like I said, we're into the final four
now and Schwarber has just finished his round. My guy
didn't make it, and uh well we got kamon Aro

coming up. Well, that's my other Camano because that's that's
my mom's guy, Caminarie. I got a little tiery when
they retired Longoria's number yesterday there in Tampa. But I
mean Canyonaro came Caminero, like he should really come out
to that, like that should be it. So it should

should come out to They should just play that like

that ten second jingle. It's a dear smacking killing machine. Well,
you know at the end there's the full extended version
is at the end of that episode if you let

but so far a couple of things from the Home
Run Derby. One thing that's surprising, but but it's kind
of fun to see. But the first thing is, here's
your Home Run derbutes on Netflix. Yep, right, yeah, I know,

put plenty of people my dad, Hey, where's the Home
Run Derby? No, that that really did take a lot
of folks. I surprised it. It's like, what the hell?
We had a poll in the house today with with
my wife and Zoe and ies. Okay, what time does
Grandpa text me? What where's the Home Run Derby? Over under? Yeah,

I said, I said three thirty. Pam said no, no, no,
to be way earlier than that. He's going to plan
his days, he said, twelve thirty. He's always I'm gonna
go in the middle two thirty. Uh. It was. It
was kind of close between Zoe and I because it
was like a little bit after three. He said, Hey,
so where's the Where's the Home Run Derby? Dad? It's
on Netflix. See I figure it would have been like
four oh five because you would have had the the
(03:42):
pre show, Like I don't know how early that started
on Netflix, because that used to be a big pomp
and circumstance ceremony thing on on ESPN, where it'd be
a good two hours ahead of the first pitch. So
I figured maybe he'd creep closer to start time. Uh yeah,
you know. But the thing is like my dad is
(04:04):
now more of an early riser than he what you know,
he's in his late seventies now somewhere an early riser,
get out, get you know, doing stuff. So it's like
like early for him, Like he's seven eight o'clock like
now suddenly, because he goes to bed at like nine
and uh, and I just said, Okay, I said, so,
I said, you know, but he's gonna. I think he's
gonna go late. I think he's gonna be out doing
stuff today. He's at the whole weekend. He's gonna while
like I'm trying to figure out everything he's doing. Yeah,

when's he gonna get the text?

About for so, like I thought he would kind of
get to the point where Okay, I'm getting close to
gonna Yeah. But look, honestly, you know, watching it as
we have so far, and that's that's the first big
question is Okay, here's a home run Derby on Netflix,
and this is the correct verdict for the home run
Derby on Netflix? Is that the home run Derby? And
(04:47):
how we've seen it's coverage tonight, it's using MLB network
people Orange shaht he was just interviewing uh players on
the field and and you know, it's like it was
on ESPN the last few years. The home run Derby
is fine, right, It's not the worst home run derby
you've ever seen in your life. And Netflix is ruining it.
And I keep getting promos for the next season of three.
(05:09):
Body problem. I don know what no you're not getting
any of that. Oh this is the best I want
to get. I'm so glad it's away from ESPN. Nah,
like I said, you kind of miss Bourban a little bit.
I will have more on that in a minute, But
like overall, like, yeah, it's fine, like the home run Derby,
not that it's seen its day, but as far as
the popularity of it and how and how watchable it is,
(05:30):
it kind of is what it is at this point.
You can you can change the rules all you want,
and I like the rule changes to stop guys from Hey,
hit twenty eight home runs in the second round and boy,
he's the big story, but of course he's got nothing
left and you know, he loses and somebody else wins.
We're not even gonna talk about like it kind of
you know, I like that rule change to kind of
protect the players. Maybe you can end with a flourish
more than you're ending with just this guy's just not
(05:51):
as tired as the other guy. But overall, like, yo, okay,
it kind of is what it is. Right when you
get big names in there, it's kind of fun for
a little while, but overall, the you know, you can't
ask it to be something. It's not. It's not you know,
home field advantage in the World Series. Now, maybe if
we got a tied All Star Game tomorrow, another home
run derby to break it like we had last year.
But you know, overall, it's kind of a fun night
(06:13):
just to celebrate baseball and and be that event that
after a hot day doing whatever you're doing. Hey, I'm
just gonna sit back at night and watch people at
home runs. I'm just gonna watch the Dingers for a while.
And that's kind of what it is. Kind it kind
of is what it is. I think that's the correct
verdict of the derby, especially the derby on Netflix, because
it's been fine. It's been great, it's not been awful,
it's been fine. Yeah. In the in the end, it's
(06:34):
guys swinging for the downs on every pitch, which is
pretty much major League baseball in twenty twenty six anyway, Right,
That's that's all we're ad. It's like it's the same
same swing that we have in most of these games.
The fact that you do have so much star power
is great, right that that adds a little bit of
juice to it. Be good to intersperse, you know, some
(06:54):
first half highlights and whatever, just kind of, you know,
give breathe in some life to what you may have
missed from the first season, first half of the season
as you go in. But the fact that Murakami came
back over the weekend to play for the White Sox
and was available for this is nice because he's he's
become one of those Darling signed the Jordan Brand deal
(07:15):
that that got announced today. You had Schwarver and and
Harper Caminaro, like all of these guys that are Kadam
and Arrow. Now we're gonna watch that video in the break.
But it's just that it's another piece that you check
the box. All right, we're at the midsummer this is
(07:37):
it Like yesterday we over the weekend we had the
draft into whatever, you know, all Star Sunday Night became.
But it doesn't have the same juice that it once
did because I think with a lot of these these extras,
it's the all right, yes and all right, it's the
improv version of everything we do with with sports of

all right, well, how do you up? I don't know.
The the home run ball is great, like the last
different colored baseball, make it, take it and hit as
many as you can. That's all fine and good. The
fact that you don't have the pitch clock is great,
although I think a couple of guys probably could have
used it earlier in the aforementioned Murakami And yeah, and
then it's Cagli Taglion and his dad went up there
(08:22):
going like, hey, let's get this done as fast as
we ca There's gonna be a little bit of a
rough you know, we're gonna have to figure things out first.
By eight minutes, and then Caglio comes in, it's like
four minutes in, I'm done. I'm done, like gone, Like
his dad's throwing as fast as he can get. It's
like you're watching Chris Sale. You're on the in an
(08:43):
actual major league game. Your time wasn't even as long
as Stairway to Heaven. And I don't mean the eleven
minute version. I mean like the edited seven minute version.
You could even make it that long. But my favorite
part of the derby, right, okay, go ahead, and this
is and this is part of the journey that we
have in this country with celebrity. Right. So, for the
longest time, Chris Berman's the big star at ESPN. How
(09:03):
many I've told you many stories working with him, you
know why Bermon impression is fantastic and disagree Berman's a
big well you know what, and they those guys TJ
can just like the Jets go fall off a cliff. Uh.
So you know he's a big star. But then the
Burman backlash comes and suddenly people on on social media,
(09:25):
I don't like Berman. I don't like this, the stick
that he has had for years, all the nicknames, the
back back, brack, prack, prag growing right, I don't like it.
And suddenly up ESPN, what do we do. We listen
to everybody on social media. So now they push Berman
out and he's a persona non grata. But now he's
coming back a little bit and he's doing a little
bit of Primetime with Booger McFarlane, which is awesome because
that was the show of record for so long in
(09:47):
the NFL. Right, But like everybody hated him, hated him,
hated him. Can't stand, can't stand, can't stand. But usually,
you know, we say, hey, sometimes you live long enough
to become the villain. Sometimes you go from the hero
to the villain. But you stick around long enough and
then suddenly, ah, people start to miss you again. When
I saw Chris Berman trending tonight, I said, oh my goodness, okay,
(10:09):
it's a number two. Was a number two trending topics
he did, did the Homo derby for so long, And
I said, many times, at least give Berman this, like
when when ESPN had it, they still had to give
him this, right, or Netflix should call and say, Chris
come up and do this in the ESPN would say, yes,
we're going to loan you him to do this for
for tonight, right, Just because I want to count how
many times over the course of a two and a
half hour event he says the word back up the
(10:31):
over under his six hundred and seventy four times. That's now,
that was only in the first round for me, I'll
tell you what, so that would have been a really
active colch Yeah, kid me. How many how many backs
from the beginning of the of the turment till the
end from the first he says the word back, Yeah,
cal she you could have made some money right when
Contres stepped into the box till the end of the yeah,

final swing. But I love the fact that I see
all and I see the quotes and it's all, Oh man,
I miss Berman, I really miss And that's the general
though most of the most you still get your odd
one now. Oh, I'm so glad, but generally everybody misses him.
And I thought that was really cool that here's you know,
people understand that, okay, there's there's you know, you love somebody,
you hate somebody. But I like the fact that everybody
(11:14):
seemed to, Oh, now, I really miss the guy. He
hasn't done it in a long time, because really, the
home Run Derby was a thing. He helped make it
a thing, right with all his calls a different home
run calls, he helped make it a thing, And so
I kind of dig that people miss him a little
bit with that right now. Selfishly, if I had known that,
i'd have called Netflix there here in la I just said, listen,
I'll come on as Berman and do it. You don't
(11:37):
even have to pay me, and I can, and I'll
just do it as Berman for two and a half hours.
I'll give you crazy nicknames. I will do it, and
I'll do his voice just like it is during the derby,
like when you get halfway through it all of a
sudden and I have no voice left. DJ backpack Pack
gone God like I'll even do that for you. I'll
do it again. You don't even have to pay me.
I will come and do it. I'll come sit in
(11:59):
your studios and l and I will do it for free.
Which would have happened first your voice would have started
to go or you would have been served decease and
desist letter by Berman's lawyers. Oh no, I think he
would have loved that. Well, if I can't do it,
at least Jason, who I worked with him, and he
is doing it for me like that, that'd be pretty cool.

I think part of what happened with with Berman also, though,
is all those years that you had the overnight where
they just rerun and I think they still do. I
can't claim to know their programming, but once upon a
time it was the rerunning of Sports Center all through
the night, which means if Berman was hosting, Oh yeah,

they got all for ten straight out, you got tons
of right and people thought he was chained to that desk. No, no, no,
it's just a repeat. Oh yeah, yeah, But if you
did it for the full night, that's a lot of Berman,
or even even the next day when they would replay

But I can understand where there would be you know,
a little like like Dan hous his head backlash where

you had a lot of Berman because of the repeats. Yeah,
oh yeah, all of that. So like as he's the
number one guy, it's the all right, there's there's a lot.
I mean, you could change a channel. He may be gone,
but he may be gone one of the way and
they might have another anchor at the desk when you

tune back. One of the best Berman stories out tid
I've never told this one. This is always it's just fun.
This is this, this is not this is just fun.
So when I started as a production assistant at ESPN,
and you knew you were editing a highlight for Boomer
to read, and you have these things called shot sheets
where you have to write down what was going on
on the play so he could so the anchor can
read along with it. So it's so that you know,

you get the shot sheets right. So at this point,
Berman's how this is mid nineties. Berman's a household name.
He is the biggest star. ESPN has all of this,
so you know all the players in the game, and
you go, oh, this is the nickname he has for
this guy, this name after this guy. Right. So, so
I have my highlight my baseball game, whatever it was,
and and I and I and I, you know, write
in the names of the player. And I put his
(14:01):
nickname in there, you know, for you know, obviously, you know,
to help him write whatever. So I put it in there,
and and and we go up. And what you do
is you take the tape back when it was on tape.
You would take your tape and your shot sheet and
you would go up to the to the anchor and
you would say, here, here's your highlight of this game.
And they would you would stand next to them and
they would read the highlight on the shot sheet along
with the with the watching the tape, so they knew
(14:22):
it was going on. If something happened they had a question,
you could tell them what was going on here. Oh yeah,
he came out of the game in the seventh inning.
This is a new picture in the seventh okay, great,
And they'll write a note in thatching. So you sit there.
So I give the shot sheet to Berman, right, and
I forget what baseball it was, you know, I don't
know who it was, but you know, he's doing the
whole thing. And here the first inning, you know, home run,
you know whoever, you know whatever it was, and I
(14:43):
put the nickname in there. Any second well, you know,
second inning, double down the line, nickname any any presses
stop on the tape. He looks at me, says, don't
don't worry about I'll put the nicknames in. Don't worry.
I don't worry about writing the nicknames in. I'll do that.
I said, Okay, okay, you know boom nope, okay, great, right, okay,
all rights place. Imagine I'm just writing in his nick names.

I'll i'll do that. I'll do the nickname. I got
the nicknames. Okay, just just so you know, I'll do that.
I'll do that. And it prompt him to put in
some new nicknames. Did he give a guy? And oh oh.
He was always very open, like if you had a
nickname for him, he would love he would love to
have it. There was there was one kid one time,
I'm like, we're now coming up with parody song. Yeah,
oh yeah, where he wants to kill you. He was
(15:25):
so nervous because the Mets had this Picture's name was
Jason Hackamie who came up and he pitched like for
a couple of years of the Mets, he's like one
of there. This in the late nineties, he was one
of their you know, maybe the next great picture. But
Jason hackemy and he says, I got a nickname for Berman.
I said, what he says, Jason, how can we be
lovers if we can't be friends? I said, oh my god,
that's awesome. You got to tell him that. And he
was so nervous about telling him. I said, no, of course,

he'd love he'd love that if at least it shows
you're thinking about He was so nervous all day. And
he told him about it, and he again had and
we're like, he goes and and and the guy told
me he said he liked it. We'll see. I don't know.
And he actually went on the air. He says, Jason,
how can we be lovers if we can't be friends?
And he says, nice job, Josh. And because that was
an so that was pretty cool. Yeah, so I thought

that was pretty cool. That is pretty cool. But he
was always if you had an idea, Now he didn't
always use it, but if you had an idea, and
you like for a nickname, and he is, oh, okay,
all right, I'll do it now. I feel like I
know it so well. I can, I can, I can
do it better than him, you know. I mean we
got to play the day coming up next. I got
a great one for you, okay, and a great and
I can't wait. I thought about it on the way
in I'm waiting with Ben Breath. It's great enough that

it's so good, but it's such a stretch that it
fits perfectly. I just know whenever we get this point
in the calendar, and you and I've been doing this
show here at Fox Sports Radio, blessed to do it,
hope to continue to do it for many many years.
There's always another Berman story that comes along with the
home run derby. And I love that so many people
are embracing, like you said, number two trending today, all

positivity because we're all kids of that era. As Berman
was the lead to all of these things. The nicknames. Hell,
they came out with the Tops Trading card this past
year that had an insert set that were all the
nicknames for all those players, for Bo Jackson, for Greg

that the celebration of him. I think we and our
media could could do better and better served to remember
how much he was grinding in those early years to

race now because you know, they fired their manager when
they were supposed to be they were supposed to Now
they're catching up to the Braves, like, oh gee, look
at that. Everybody done maddingly legend in Philadelphia as well

as New York. But look, Schwarver's just that one guy, right,
White Sox fan Southsider. It was always the guy, like
even when he was on the Cubs, Like, I really
like that guy. But I mean even when he was
a Cub and winning a World Series Cub, we were
doing the shows and I'm like be gradually like I
like that guy. Yeah, I kind of liked all those

guys that were on the twenty sixteen team, but that
was the guy and then I had to watch him.
Now now he's in the NL last Tim and I
gotta watch him. He said, he's impossible, not like Shober

books that are here's a great reviewed book that that's
come out this year on the list of the ten
best books. It's a great war book, or it's a
great book about space trout whatever it is. And like,
but sometimes I just want a real trashy thriller. That's it.
It's like, okay, because you know, I read one of
those books, I remember those five hundred page spanning where

because I because because I just read Buckeye, which one
of the best books I read in the last few years,
and it spans two wars. Uh small town in Ohio.
How how these two families deal with two wars? It
was an incredible book. But now I'm like, now I
just want a nice trashy thrill. So I read a
Freedom McFadden book. I'm like, okay, I finished in the day.
I'm like, okay, great. But sometimes I'm in the mood
for you know, okay, sometimes it's okay to know, hey,
I want something that really is going to just change

my way of thinking and change my way of life.
So that just does one pop porn or read a
Freedom McFadden book. Now, I'm good, but that's it. Sometimes
you just need some jackass re television film, book or
in this case, I mean, this is about as close
as you get to an at the actual sport in
a competition like this, Right, it's more more like a
(22:52):
baseball game than say, penalty kicks. You want war in
peace or you want the housemate. You can enjoy both,
enjoy both look depends which side of your brain you
want to feed. The housemaid gets married, the housemaid opens
an ice cream pall, or the housemaide buys a baseball team.
These are like curious George Titles does it. But while

we're continuing on here with the home Runner, the big
event this weekend was yet the second straight event in
MMA that landed with an absolutely I say, the third
straight event that ended as an absolute dud. Connor McGregor,
in his big comeback fight, hurts his leg on his
first kick the fight ends. He hasn't said exactly what
(23:35):
the injury was. You see a lot of people on
social media doctors saying looks like a torn acl but
he already said he's having surgery and he wants to
come back and fight again. And MMA and the UFC
and everything that goes along with it. It's now there's
some red lights blinking because it's almost like it's become
(23:57):
a legacy fight league because the last few events that
have drawn people either to watch it to talk about it,
that our echine getting eyeballs to it are all stunt fights. Right.
You had Ronda Rousey and Gina Carona who showed up
and it was eight seconds long. Gina Corona, I'm done.
And after eight seconds they're hugging and smiling. Boy, we
(24:17):
just made a lot of money. Yeah, and and and
it was thirteen seconds long. Right, Connor McGregor made a
lot of money. Done. You know, he's hurt, comes back,
he's not in shape to do it. You know, he
has his first fight in a long time. Like the
UFC and and mixed martial arts in general, they need
something like like like MMA is kind of in trouble,
I feel because they had a great run for a
(24:40):
long time when they were bringing homemade stars out and
whether it was like a guy like Randy Couture into
John Bones Jones and then the Ronda Rousey phenomenon. You
had a lot of bigs and Conno McGregor of course,
carrying the mail for as long as he did. You
had a lot of stars and MMA. You know, I
remember in the late aughts, you know, early early teens
where where people would go out Saturday nights just to
(25:01):
watch the UFC card at a bar and it's amazing,
I'm going out to watch it was so incredibly popular.
But now they've not been able to manufacture any more
stars and the legacy fights all land with a thud,
and people are smart and they see these as well.
What kind of shape was Connor McGregor in? Did Ronda
Rousey and Gina Carono really plan on having a long fight?

You know?

Did Carona really plan having a long fight? Like, I
can't believe I'm spending my time, devoting my time to
this where I'm sitting through a card, or I'm spending money,
or I'm going to it. However you're gonna consume it
and I get there and the big event is done
in a minute, right, Like, I don't think that you
can sustain that without star power anymore, and UFC is

in a tough spot right now. It's almost like they're
the PGA Tour post Tiger Woods, where how do we
stop losing viewers and and and stop losing relevancy because
Tiger Woods for so long brought that to you. But
this is kind of different because MMA was a Okay,
we like this, and whereas BGA toured to figure out
well can we sell Rory McElroy and Brooks Koepka and
(26:06):
d Chambeau and all of these guys, you know, Jordan
Speith for MMA, it's like, who do you sell now?
Like what do you do? Like? And when the last
two fights the biggest things you can do have been
these legacy fights where they've lasted eight seconds, I'm like, really,
like I think people walk away. When you walk away
from an event and you feel like you have a
bad taste in your mouth for whatever reason, you're not
(26:28):
going back to it right like like like I was
excited about the Ronda Rousey Gina Caronal thing and then
to watch how it came out and I said, Okay,
I've never fallen for that again. And I didn't fall
from the Connor McGregor this time, and I feel like
the people who are watching after every time, there's a
large group people that go, well, I'm not gonna devote
my attention, my time, my money, whatever, it's going to
be into that. And I feel like MMA is at
(26:49):
a real crossroads right now where they need some sort
of infusion of talent and star power. They need something,
They need something, or they're gonna be in a lot
of trouble. Well, I think it's kind of like boxing,
where you have a healthy layer if you're truly into
boxing or MMA, right, Patty Pimbler, it was immediately he
was watching out a monitor as McGregor went down. He goes, well,
(27:11):
your new face is right here. I'm right here, look
at me. Because he dispatched his opponent in no time
flat right, And he's got star power and he's got
some juice behind him, and all of that speaks with
the brogue, and if you follow MMA, he's got some juice.
But it's a matter of can you translate him to
that next the casuals, the folks that need the star power. Right,
(27:34):
Golf is in a pretty good spot, but you don't
have that guy who's the breakthrough. I have to watch
this event right, Scotti Scheffler is not that guy Roy McElroy.
You get a little bit of bounce, but when it's
Sunday and he's competitive and he's at the top of
the board, but it's that breakthrough, right boxing, how many
(27:55):
of these legacy Hey, let's match these guys up again.
We always knew what we were getting with Floyd down
the stretch. Okay, that's fine, technically he's doing what he
needs to, but he's not gonna go in for the kill,
right the de la Hoya back in the day, or
Pakia or all of those. Whether it's a one fight
too many with Rousi and Corono, is a payday. Connor
(28:16):
McGregor needed to pay day. I remember he had a
civil judgment against him. They didn't find him guilty of
criminal charges, but there was a whole assault rape accusation
out there. So the thirty two million dollars he made
certainly helps the bank account in that regard, and for
Dana White and company, it got it out a lot
of extra eyeballs. Fortunately, you know, whatever their television deal is, right,
(28:40):
you don't have to pay seventy for the pay per
view like he used to, so you at least didn't
get hooked for that. You could still go back to
whatever series or movie you're watching and be like, all right,
I'm getting my nine ninety nine worth for this month.
I didn't get even though I might have given them
some of my time, and you decide how much that's
worth to you. You didn't have to do the pay
per view thing because of the deal that they've brokeer.
(29:02):
But I get your point, right. You don't have that
star that's going to bring in and give you the
giant performance. That's why I guess the Pimblet undercard or
second main event was really the main event. What was
all said and done? Because McGregor goes in there decide
conspiracy wise, whether it was right or wrong? Should he
(29:23):
have fought? Was he in any condition to fight? Right?
It's like here he is going into a center, like
you start seeing all the here's the days leading up
to watch him with this limp? Did he need the
paycheck that much? Dana White said a lot of stuff
he didn't say. No. I think I think Dana White's
even You can tell by him he's a little nervous
just by hearing the way he talks about events and
certain things like you could tell after the short the
(29:46):
shortness of this event that he seems a little concerned,
you know, a minute like he seemed a little conabricating
information in terms of how popular and views like no,
we see how many views there were? Yes? So like yeah,
I mean, and there's a little bit to it in
terms of, you know, trying to figure out what that
next next level is. How do you keep the promotion growing, right,
(30:07):
because if you're not growing, you're not advancing, you're dying.

the first time since all the big Lakers moves this offseason,

new teammates, all seventeen new players that everybot in to
play with him and lucap Hello to all those new moneies.
And now why is this a big deal? Well? Here
he was today talking about how excited he is about
the new pieces coming into the Lakers.

Yeah, I think they're good. I mean obvious, you know,
being with the guys that are leaving for you know,
a couple of years and then you know, Brown for
you know, five years. You know you hate to see
you know, guys, let that go. But you know, the
pieces that are coming in I'm very excited about and
you know, happy to get started kind of today and
see where it goes.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Okay, So now all right, well here's Austin Reeves talking
about this. Why this is a big deal. There is
no two on a team that has more pressure on
him this year than Austin Reeves with the Lakers. All Right,
the stars of the stuf like Brunson, Wemby, Kate Cunningham,
all the stars, you get it. But there's no one a.
(33:38):
There's no there's no sidekick, there's no second, there's no
two on a team that has more pressure than Austin Reeves.
And now you are seeing that when he talks, he
makes headlines. Right, this is this is the big basketball
headline of the day. Austin Reeves speaking last year at
this time, Austin Reeves speaking, but it's being played on
national on national television, on radio, on TV because Austin
(33:58):
Reeves has been elevated by the Lakers into the Scottie pitpen'
roll to Luka, doncig and forget about this team being
built around Luca, which, of course you're going to Luca
is the big star, but there's big stars across the league, right, Yeah,
the Nuggets are built around Jokis, right, The Knicks are
built around Brunson, kind of all the teams. The Celtics
are built around Tatum. We've seen this. But the Lakers
(34:22):
built this team, and they went out and signed a
lot of supplementary players because they thought and they have
the confidence that we're paying Austin Reeves he's the second
best player on this team. This is a huge risk
that the Lakers are taking. Not that I don't think
he's up for us and the Austin Reeves is the
hell of a player, but he's got to understand by
just by days like today, when he says something and
(34:43):
it becomes headlines, you have taken that step up in
the hierarchy. Now now you're not just hey, I'm the
third guy and I'm able to just hoop and Lebron
will bail us out and Luke will bail me out.
The Lakers were built, yes, around Luca, but they built
the team the way they did because you are gonna
be the that second big star, not just a nice
player who makes money and hits some shots, but you
(35:05):
are that second best player and the Lakers' fortunes will
go as he goes. If he has a terrific year,
Lakers will be fantastic. They'll be like they were during
that run last year. But if he's not, Lakers are
gonna be a team that struggles to get in the
playing round. Like there is no second best players, no
two on a team with more pressure on him. Where
the season go either way than Austin Reeves. Yeah, ccause
that old undrafted highest earning non drafted player thing that's gone.
(35:32):
That's gone. That's a nice little footnote, and it's something
at the end of his career. It's like, ah, you
overachieved great. At this point, the expectations are great because
it's tied to Lebron James. Right. That's the part of
it is how much was real imagined in terms of
retention of Lebron James. That's always gonna be there. They
forced him out, said they didn't need him back, and
(35:55):
you got this massive deal. Now you doing the old
Pippin to Jordan's Like Luca Dncis ain't won a damn thing,
so I he got to one. Yeah, oh no, no
he didn't. And whether he'll ever be healthy enough and
ready enough, you know, because it's the ten weeks. I'm
surprised you're not walking around with that shirt. I just

got my first NIX, my first Knick swag today. This
is the beginning of my Knicks rollout, my Knicks and five rollout. Yeah,
it's a rollout. Now, I gotta I gotta wait till
I get the other stuff. But I just got my

It might be Christmas time before the rest of that

I mean, look, the arrival of Kessler is huge because
that's the guy that Luca really wanted. But but you're
born on Reeve's right. I mean, a lot of teams
have a number two guy, but it's it's not he
who's gonna get the credit for the winner loss right,
anything Denver does, it's all Jokic, no matter how much
those other guys, Jamal Murray and everybody else contributes. So

it'll be an interesting fall here around these parts. I mean,
as we broadcast from Los Angeles, plenty of Laker fans
here who were all excited that Lebron went away, and
we'll see what you ask for. You got two guys
at the head that don't play any defense. Walker Kestler's great,
but he can't fill up that much space. Yeah, I mean, really,
he is the co the co star here there Again,

this Laker season, how It's Gonna go is more about
him than anything else. I can't wait to see your guy,
