lots of big quarterback stuff. I got admit little upset

that Carson Beck was not playing quarterback for the Cardinals tonight.
I'm not gonna lie I was pretty salty when he
was down graded today National Championship rematch.

I really would be okay if John Beck had played
quarterback for the card.

still playing for them right now? How did it go
well so far? Tonight for Cousins and Mendoza they have
each Faumi the end zone, Fernando looking.

a rifle. Yes to Jack Besh and the Raiders store

They are twenty seven fourteen Arizona with the lead. Look,
Jacoby Brissett started this game for them. Five out of
five throwing the football and a touchdown. Everything is okay
there for the Raiders. Kirk Cousins tonight five out of
six for fifty yards in a touchdown, and so far
Fernando Mendoza six out of eleven fifty three yards and
a touchdown as well. First of all, I would like

to thank everybody who came around to our take from
a few days ago, and we told you you know what,
the door is open for Fernando Mendoza to win this
job week one. We told you about before they even played.
The door is open, and now tonight Mendoza's played pretty well.
Will break it down in a second. And I'm seeing
so many even earlier today on TV and everyone, Hey

mendo men, the Mendoza era, the Mendoza Hey. Yeah again.
That's why I like to say we're ahead of the curve.
We told you a few days ago that if Fernando
Mendoza plays great in the preseason, it's irrelevant what Kirk
Cousins does. If Mendoza plays great, he will start Week
one because it will be an avalone lanch of support.
If the number one overall pick is ready, why are
(06:03):
we sitting him behind a guy that is now on
his third team in the last three years and signed
to be the backup after four weeks?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
What are we waiting for when the.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Soft part of our schedule is the very beginning of
the season, right, the Raiders start with a really soft
part of the schedule. What are we waiting for tonight?
So far, Fernando Mendoza has been terrific?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Has he been? Oh my goodness? He hasn't missed a throw.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
No, He's tried to force a couple of plays, but overall,
his play action game is really good. Already you can
see it. He has made some big throws through for
the touchdown. Mendoza is what everybody hoped he would be.
When he was drafted. I admit, am I nervous about
the guy? Yeah, because all the safeguards the Raiders have
put in place about him. It's like, guys, he's a

number one overall pick. He sinks three swims, right, that's
what you have to do. But so far, it's not
even a fact of where the game is not too
fast for Mendoza. This is now him trying to make
big plays, keeping plays alive, like he got absolutely wrecked
on their last possession, trying to make something happen when okay,
you throw the ball away. But I'd rather have a

quarterback doing that than checking down throwing it short. Mendoza
looks every bit how the Raiders and the NFL hoped
and expected him to look. So so far, Kirk Cousins
has done nothing that. There is nothing tonight that tells me, oh,
Cousin's gonna stay the quarterback. If Mendoza continues, he builds
on tonight. Now he's got to have He's gotta have
(07:29):
three really good games, right. He can't have a game
where ooh, two out of nine an interception. His quarterback
rating is around forty. He has a game like that,
and then suddenly the Raiders are gonna say, Okay, maybe
he's not quite ready, but if he has three big
games in the preseason, he starts week one, and you know,
it's like, have that big check mark ready for game one,
because what he's done so far tonight, how he has looked,
(07:49):
he has looked absolutely ready to play check off week one.
For Fernando Mendoza, test one has been passed. Now he's
got two more.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Okay, I'll uh, I'll give you that. I've seen a
couple of throw that I really like, couple across the middle.
Certainly that touchdown throw was a dart uh to a
diving to the end zone. Besh uh fantastic, said Dart,
and diving in the same sense, said Jackson. Dart did
not slide tonight at all. He did not just well,
let you know, it's not some sort of thing. He
did not slide at all. Today, I will broadcast professionals.

I'm painting a picture and people know that.

You know you're not talking about You're not making illusion illusions, Michael.

These are illusions you make like Doug Heady. These are illusions, Michael, illusions.

the same haircut. I loved it. Fernanda Mendoza and his
little brother have the same exact haircut. But it's like.

They do, Oh that's great. This sounds like you guys
have any you know, touchdown dances?

And they're going through all the grab ass ory and
then he goes to Fernando goes to extend to play
and he kind of dances towards the right uh to
the sideline, and it's literally like a step and a
half to go out about.

He holds on the ball.

And gets trunked, like, no, he's got to get rid,
Come on, get rid of the ball.

But it's okayes. My mom is not good. But that's
one you live to see another day. But that comes
with learning. I also take it with the grain ofssault.
It's the Arizona Cardinals whose first unit's not supposed to
be good, which means the second unit probably that much worse.
So I'm not downgrading what he's doing. But but he
(09:34):
think it's playing with the with the with the top level, right.
I mean he's also coming in with the backups. And
you can only do what you see so far. And
that's the thing is that you don't want to postpone
the future. He's got a ace all three of these tests, right,
I mean, there's no doubt he can't have a If
he has one bad game in the preseason's not happening.
But like I told you, if he has a great preseason,
(09:55):
I know how the world works. It's like it's like
other people and teams don't understand how the world. Oh,
I know, he doesn't need to start at all. Yeah,
it's great to say that. In April and May and
juneen you're sitting by a pool and you're doing a
radio interview or a podcast and you're saying, yeah, yeah,
we don't need to see this guy for you know,
eight weeks. Maybe again, Hey, if Kirk plays well, we
don't see Mendoza. In a perfect world, Fernando doesn't play, Yeah,
(10:16):
and then the footballs fly for real and all of
a sudden, you get to September first, and it's, oh man,
we got big decisions to make. We saw x y ands.
I'm telling you, man, But he's if he aces all
these tests, it's fine and tonight. So far, what I've seen,
he has aced this time.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
It's the theory versus reality when it comes to this stuff,
because I'm old school to where if I can buy
a guy time to make sure he's acclimated, to make
sure I've solidified all of these support mechanisms that are
that should be in place for a young quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I e.

He doesn't have five guys standing in front of because look,
Linda Brown's great, he was a great addition. There ain't
five of them. Okay, the rest of that line will
need to really haul ass and make sure that they
can keep him up upright throughout the season. But you've
got to test it and actually get game experience. I
understand it. Like you're both sides of the coin. I'd
(11:08):
love to see him and make sure since you did
bring in Kirk Cousins, you're not bold to him for
any real money. So whenever that part of the equation
comes into this, like no, Atlanta's paying the bulk of
the freight. Now they structured his deal oddly, but again
there's not a lot of substantive guaranteed money, good mentor
(11:28):
bring him along all of those things, best habits, best
practices kind of things. And for Fernando Mendoz, I mean,
the only headline he's made this offseason is how he
actively avoids the strip. That's it like that. That's as
much as you're getting out of him in terms of
enticing details. Eventually, maybe we'll get his watch list for
whatever cartoons, anime or rom coms he's into. But where
(11:52):
it stands now, you've got skill position players. I'm just
still concerned about the offensive line. Now you open with
Miami and then and the next week you got the Chargers.
Week four, you've got the Chiefs. So you've got spagnolah,
and we look here what the Chargers defense should be
able to do. You're gonna get tested real early. It
doesn't mean I keep him away, but it's the idea
(12:14):
of I understand if you're looking at it from a
long haul perspective with Captain Kirk in the fold, but
you've also got a very thirsty fan base. His face
is all up and down Las Vegas Boulevard as the
next and come buy your tickets see Fernando.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
But I'll tell you this, there was something in the
air that night DJ. The thing about Mendoza, Right, everything
you have wanted to see from him tonight you have seen.
You've seen him be aggressive, you've seen him get outside
the pocket, you have seen him great ball, fake, You've
seen everything you wanted the main thing. And I get
your concerned about the offensive line. If he was a
(12:54):
strict pocket guy, then I would say, Okay, yeah, maybe not,
but he has shown escapability. He's always had a capability. Right,
that's one that's one of one of the reasons why
he's such a good quarterback. He's able to keep plays alive.
And not only just keep plays alive, but I will
take off and run and be smart. And so if
that's considering that style, the offensive line thing isn't that
(13:15):
big a deal, Like, okay, as long as the offensive
line isn't just a sieve and and they're just letting, hey,
go ahead, the quarterbacks right there, just go go ahead
and get him. And that's fine. Just you know, say
good things about me. Uh yeah, it's okay for him
to start and again it's a it's a three week
audition and you got an a saw. It's like we
when you want to audition for a conservatory, Like you
(13:36):
go to college and you're like, oh, you know, I'm
gonna play the you play the h you play the violin,
you make it okay, You're gonna go our next people,
and then the third one kind of like flash dance
a little bit, and so you gotta.

There you go.

You just brought you perked everybody out. He's a welder
at night, and yeah, get those feed moving. So as
long as you do that, everything is all right. And
and so far he is ace that. Now he hasn't
been perfect, but he has been really really good. He
has done everything you would hope and want a quarterback
to do coming into the game. Look, just drove him
(14:08):
down in a field goal position, really bad, missed field
goal that could have cut the lead to twenty seven seventeen.
But not on him again. So far Week one, consider
this aste.

He's fine. He's so ready for me the week one.
Get ready the Fernandeluran or whatever we're calling him.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Oh, I like the Fernando Laurian or is it just
pretty good as long as you know, because they did
something like as long as it's Fernando Mendoza as the
Mandalorian and like Cousins as Grogu like that little face.

That's the fact that the Raiders still have a local
presence to the point that they take over the CBS
affiliate here in La.

So again we got we still got a bunch of
games going on right now. In the fourth quarter, Arizona
leads the Raiders twenty seven fourteen. Fernando Mendoza's night is
done following that drive that ended in a missed field goal. Again,
we'd had great stuff on him a few minutes ago.
We would to find him. The best of it will
be there. Meanwhile, a couple of other big stories to

get to tonight. Some quarterbacks making headlines, and again because
it's week one of the preseason, you're making headlines for
not always the reasons you would hope your team will
make headlines for tonight. Earlier, Bengals beat the Lion sixteen fourteen,
hope you had the under And Joe Burrow played a
bit for the Bengals tonight about that, and maybe Joe
(18:43):
Burrow thought, who I could have actually maybe sat a
little bit longer and not actually played Burrough play face.

Burro slung down in the backfield back at the forty
yard line, got a toss down by hasidin.

NFL Network on the call. So yeah, that's kind of that.
When you saw that play, I'm like, oh, man, Joe Burrow,
uh Burrow at you know, Burrow's fine.

I don't want to make you think anything to him.

And he threw the ball, okay, you know, five out
of six for forty yards and he did get sacked
and that was it for Burrow.

There is no team that more needs their quarterback to
believe they're on the right path than Joe Burrow and
the Bengals, because he will absolutely Aaron Rodgers things in
the offseason if the Bengals stink, and he will say
this is no longer tenable. I'm not spending the rest
of my career here, two years left on my deal, X,
Y and Z. I need out right, that's what absolutely

is going to happen. And if I'm the Bengals, right,
I gotta sit here and I gotta go. Okay, I
have If the Bengals were the movie obsession, okay, and
and Bear is Joe Burrow and the Bengals are are
nicky where like, you're okay, right, you love me, right,

the offseason. You draft a couple of guys, but you
look at their starting lineup much different. You got what
three new guys, You got a number one pick at
your right tackle, and you're wishing, wanting, hoping that they
gel very very quickly, because.

That division will cannibalize you.

Because even though Biles Garrett has gone, guess what, they've
been pretty good at churning through guys there, and they
brought in Jared Verse.

He'll get after your ass too. So yeah, it's for
Joe Burrow. Yeah, you could see the writing down the wall.
You got all these skilled position players. It goes back
to what we were talking about a little bit with
the Raiders.

No, I can't, you know, put him in a bubble
when the right or season comes. That paid him a
lot of money. He's really, really good and he's thrived
despite all of the operational inefficiencies and bad decision making
there in Cincinnati. All that said, first couple of possessions
of a preseason game, I don't care if it's a
three step trying to get rid of the damn ball

and yell hey, hey, like it's a joint practice.

maybe to make it a little bit further, so Burrow

The other story another quarterback to get to tonight. That
was really fine And I was happy to see this
because all he has gotten is bad publicity since he
got taken very early in the draft a few years ago.
And yeah, a lot of it is of his own doing.
Someone that's you know, can't come out of a game
when you're tired. You got to make sure to work
at things. But Anthony Richardson playing tonight for the Colts,
(26:27):
that's as good as you could expect Anthony Richardson to play.
Threw the ball, okay, ran the ball really well. All right,
Like I was happy to see that he had a good,
positive game because it's been nothing. But this guy stinks
and he was overrated and overdrafted, and look, all those
things are true, but it was good to see finally
him to get Okay, he's got a couple of good
he got a good quarter plus under his belt where
(26:49):
he looked like the weapon they had when they draft
him a few years ago. Now, obviously his path to
playing is only if something happens to Daniel Jones. But
in this era of the NFL where everybody is quarter
back hungry, he plays well in the preseason, someone decides
to part with a pick. Maybe now he's played enough
football in the last because that was the whole thing. Look,
you want to know why he didn't hasn't seen a
quarterback in the NFL. He didn't play enough in college.
(27:11):
You can't go in and play thirteen games and suddenly
say I'm going to figure out how to play quarterback
in the NFL. He never figured out how to play
quarterback in college. His athletic gifts were incredible, right, And
I admit it's easy to get sucked in by how
good Anthony Richardson was at Florida. Look at what he
can do physically. But yeah, you can out physical guys
in college. But he never learned to really play quarterback again,
(27:33):
thirteen starts in college football. I love the Bill Parcells
school of well, I'm only going to draft the guy
that started games thirty times. You gotta start thirty times
in college football because then I know you can handle
a position. So he never learned to play in college.
You're not going to learn how to play the position
in the NFL. And that's what has held him back.
He never learned this is what I should be doing,
(27:53):
this is how I have to act, and it's all
it's a combination of getting the reps on the field
and the maturity level, all the stuff mentally that.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Goes into it.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Right, So he has been well behind since he jumped
into the league. Maybe now after being immersed in things
for you know, three plus years, he can figure it out.
Not to the extent where he's gonna start because again, clearly,
unless Daniel Jones gets hurt, he's not gonna play, which
maybe that happens, right because we talked about right, well,
we talk about it with other quarterbacks. You know they're
gonna play at some point because that's how it goes.
(28:22):
But maybe now he has gotten to a point where
he has become an asset again and he's learned how
to play quarterback to the best of his ability because
he came in the beginning, when he was just doing
his thing. He would have a horrible two and a
half quarters, and then a half quarter would go by.
It's like, wow, he just threw two touchdowns and they
kicked the field goal. Look what Richardson's done. So you
know he's got the talent. But now that maybe it's
(28:44):
for the Colts, maybe it's for another team, but you know,
it's good to see him playing this way and you
think that maybe it's something where he's still young. He's
still you talk about Sam Darnold's being Young's only twenty
six years old. He's been with seventeen teams. He wins
the Super Bowl. You know, the same thing you can
say for Anthony Richardson. He just needed to learn how
to play quarterback more than he had to learn to
(29:04):
fit in the right system and figure things out. And
I'm hopeful got my fingers crossed. He's a exciting kid.
It's fun to go watch. He learned all his lessons,
A lot of them were very public and not stuff
you want quarterbacks to learn lessons with, or so hoping
that maybe this is a bit of a corner turn
for him, maybe for his future with the culture someplace else.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
I remember when you're minting a Heisman trophy in studio
at the end of September, right, because we had a
couple of games, we got to watch him do his
heroics live and in living color, and it was it
was thrilling to watch. But there was also that note
of caution of there are only a small sample size
of games, and he was the shining example of Okay,
(29:44):
we decided he's our guy, but he's our guy of
the future. And if we got to let that clock
start ticking and he doesn't play right away, fine, Your
other quarterback that year was Gardner Minshew. Right, when you
start looking at it and through you had several big
talent guys, no question about it.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
At your skill position.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Jonathan Taylor, who gave everybody beer after signing his what
will essentially be a lifetime contract at this point. But
he got forced into action and he wasn't ready and
you watched it. He could make the big explosives, but
in terms of playing with time, down, distance, patience, and rhythm,
it was gone. And you can't unlearn that. And that's
(30:27):
one of the concerns with the Mendosa right. If you
start relying on your legs all the time to get
out of trouble that may or may not be there,
that eventually you have to relearn living and operating between
the tackles and standing tall in the pocket, et cetera. Richardson,
we never really got to see that because he got
into his scrambling mode, took a bunch of hits that
(30:49):
he didn't to your point, said some things, took himself
out of that game. And look, that was the most
unforgivable thing you can do, according to some Now you
have the redemp process, whether it's the Gino Smith, Baker Mayfield,
your guy Sam Darnold, keep going on down the line.
Plenty of quarterbacks who found I mean, look at we're
talking about Jacoby Brissett. How many teams have been on
(31:11):
at this point. I mean, there's a lot of guys
that it's taken several bites at the apple, the right system,
the right coach and patients to get the best and
coax the best out of a guy. Hopefully that athleticism
we saw several years ago at college will get a
chance to be on display again. I hope it's not
at the expense of Danny Dimes' legso or something like that.
Oh yeahh that's my guy. Yeah, I backed him when
(31:33):
no one did, when he was a giant. So I'm
looking for the eager for the return.

That was a thing that was a When I worked
the Carrier Dome in college, right, I would work, whether
it was basketball games or lacrosse games, whatever it was,
I would always work, and I would always try to
work on Sunday. And I would always want to work
the beer because I'm allowed. I was allowed to pour
beer even though I wasn't twenty one. You're still allowed
to pour beer. But I would always want to work

because the games would start generally at noon, and you
can't sell beer before noon in New York, so I
would just sit there while everybody else is coming up
order a bunch of stuff. I would have to work
for about fifteen minutes in my entire seven hour shift
at halftime of the game, because that's when everybody's showing

up again. Beer now, and then during the second half
and everything else, but no one's buying beer. No, I'm
not that busy, but at halftime, I'm inundated. But I'll
work fifteen minutes and bust my ass and I'll just
sit back and do nothing the rest of the day.
That was the best gig ever makes.

It reminds me of the Lutis Sea, of the couple
of states where I've resided the second half of my
life thus far right, the liquor laws in New York, Yeah,
and whatever you want to call this state of California.

So tonight was the Field of Dreams. Game, really fun,
a lot of pageantry. Phillies went at seven to one
over the Twins, Kyle Schwarber leading off with a home
un into the cornfield. Harold Baines, the first white six
player to come out of that I mean like they

was my guy Baines, and I'm sure smile. But here's the

thing is, we've seen this a lot now, We've seen
guys come out of the cornfield.

I have an idea that can make the Field of
Dreams game even better because children, because you have to

what the hell is going on?

It's children of the corn man, that's what's happening. Wow,
I mean, you start Halloween early. It's it's amazing.

game for next? Because think about the movie Field of Dreams.
The White Sox show up and they play against each other.
But then we were having a tough, weird little board,
so we invited a bunch of other great players to
come player. And all these other great players so they're

playing a bunch of players. What if you had the
Field of Dreams game being an old timers game, let's
go and it's just players from the past few years.
You could have old timers from the White Sox that
just from the past few years that can still play,
can say yes, playing against the best old timers from

the past fifteen years or so in Major League. That's
an idea. Bring it there it is. Come on more

five throwing the football and a touchdown. Everything is okay
there for the Raiders. Kirk Cousins tonight five out of

Fernando Mendoza six out of eleven fifty three yards and
a touchdown as well. First of all, I would like

to thank everybody who came around to our take from
a few days ago, and we told you you know what,
the door is open for Fernando Mendoza to win this
job week one. We told you about before they even played.
The door is open, and now tonight Mendoza's played pretty well.
Will break it down in a second. And I'm seeing
so many even earlier today on TV and everyone, Hey

mendo men, the Mendoza era, the Mendoza Hey. Yeah again.
That's why I like to say we're ahead of the curve.
We told you a few days ago that if Fernando
Mendoza plays great in the preseason, it's irrelevant what Kirk
Cousins does. If Mendoza plays great, he will start Week
one because it will be an avalone lanch of support.
If the number one overall pick is ready, why are
(06:03):
we sitting him behind a guy that is now on
his third team in the last three years and signed
to be the backup after four weeks?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
What are we waiting for when the.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Soft part of our schedule is the very beginning of
the season, right, the Raiders start with a really soft
part of the schedule. What are we waiting for tonight?
So far, Fernando Mendoza has been terrific?

Has he been? Oh my goodness? He hasn't missed a throw.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
No, He's tried to force a couple of plays, but overall,
his play action game is really good. Already you can
see it. He has made some big throws through for
the touchdown. Mendoza is what everybody hoped he would be.
When he was drafted. I admit, am I nervous about
the guy? Yeah, because all the safeguards the Raiders have
put in place about him. It's like, guys, he's a
(06:46):
number one overall pick. He sinks three swims, right, that's
what you have to do. But so far, it's not
even a fact of where the game is not too
fast for Mendoza. This is now him trying to make
big plays, keeping plays alive, like he got absolutely wrecked
on their last possession, trying to make something happen when okay,
you throw the ball away. But I'd rather have a
(07:08):
quarterback doing that than checking down throwing it short. Mendoza
looks every bit how the Raiders and the NFL hoped
and expected him to look. So so far, Kirk Cousins
has done nothing that. There is nothing tonight that tells me, oh,
Cousin's gonna stay the quarterback. If Mendoza continues, he builds
on tonight. Now he's got to have He's gotta have
(07:29):
three really good games, right. He can't have a game
where ooh, two out of nine an interception. His quarterback
rating is around forty. He has a game like that,
and then suddenly the Raiders are gonna say, Okay, maybe
he's not quite ready, but if he has three big
games in the preseason, he starts week one, and you know,
it's like, have that big check mark ready for game one,
because what he's done so far tonight, how he has looked,
(07:49):
he has looked absolutely ready to play check off week one.
For Fernando Mendoza, test one has been passed. Now he's
got two more.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Okay, I'll uh, I'll give you that. I've seen a
couple of throw that I really like, couple across the middle.
Certainly that touchdown throw was a dart uh to a
diving to the end zone. Besh uh fantastic, said Dart,
and diving in the same sense, said Jackson. Dart did
not slide tonight at all. He did not just well,
let you know, it's not some sort of thing. He

be good, which means the second unit probably that much worse.
So I'm not downgrading what he's doing. But but he

think it's playing with the with the with the top level, right.
I mean he's also coming in with the backups. And
you can only do what you see so far. And
that's the thing is that you don't want to postpone
the future. He's got a ace all three of these tests, right,
I mean, there's no doubt he can't have a If
he has one bad game in the preseason's not happening.
But like I told you, if he has a great preseason,

I know how the world works. It's like it's like
other people and teams don't understand how the world. Oh,
I know, he doesn't need to start at all. Yeah,
it's great to say that. In April and May and
juneen you're sitting by a pool and you're doing a
radio interview or a podcast and you're saying, yeah, yeah,
we don't need to see this guy for you know,
eight weeks. Maybe again, Hey, if Kirk plays well, we
don't see Mendoza. In a perfect world, Fernando doesn't play, Yeah,

and then the footballs fly for real and all of
a sudden, you get to September first, and it's, oh man,
we got big decisions to make. We saw x y ands.
I'm telling you, man, But he's if he aces all
these tests, it's fine and tonight. So far, what I've seen,
he has aced this time.

It's the theory versus reality when it comes to this stuff,
because I'm old school to where if I can buy
a guy time to make sure he's acclimated, to make
sure I've solidified all of these support mechanisms that are
that should be in place for a young quarterback.

He doesn't have five guys standing in front of because look,
Linda Brown's great, he was a great addition. There ain't
five of them. Okay, the rest of that line will
need to really haul ass and make sure that they
can keep him up upright throughout the season. But you've
got to test it and actually get game experience. I
understand it. Like you're both sides of the coin. I'd
(11:08):
love to see him and make sure since you did
bring in Kirk Cousins, you're not bold to him for
any real money. So whenever that part of the equation
comes into this, like no, Atlanta's paying the bulk of
the freight. Now they structured his deal oddly, but again
there's not a lot of substantive guaranteed money, good mentor
(11:28):
bring him along all of those things, best habits, best
practices kind of things. And for Fernando Mendoz, I mean,
the only headline he's made this offseason is how he
actively avoids the strip. That's it like that. That's as
much as you're getting out of him in terms of
enticing details. Eventually, maybe we'll get his watch list for
whatever cartoons, anime or rom coms he's into. But where
(11:52):
it stands now, you've got skill position players. I'm just
still concerned about the offensive line. Now you open with
Miami and then and the next week you got the Chargers.
Week four, you've got the Chiefs. So you've got spagnolah,
and we look here what the Chargers defense should be
able to do. You're gonna get tested real early. It
doesn't mean I keep him away, but it's the idea
(12:14):
of I understand if you're looking at it from a
long haul perspective with Captain Kirk in the fold, but
you've also got a very thirsty fan base. His face
is all up and down Las Vegas Boulevard as the
next and come buy your tickets see Fernando.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
But I'll tell you this, there was something in the
air that night DJ. The thing about Mendoza, Right, everything
you have wanted to see from him tonight you have seen.
You've seen him be aggressive, you've seen him get outside
the pocket, you have seen him great ball, fake, You've
seen everything you wanted the main thing. And I get
your concerned about the offensive line. If he was a

strict pocket guy, then I would say, Okay, yeah, maybe not,
but he has shown escapability. He's always had a capability. Right,
that's one that's one of one of the reasons why
he's such a good quarterback. He's able to keep plays alive.
And not only just keep plays alive, but I will
take off and run and be smart. And so if
that's considering that style, the offensive line thing isn't that

big a deal, Like, okay, as long as the offensive
line isn't just a sieve and and they're just letting, hey,
go ahead, the quarterbacks right there, just go go ahead
and get him. And that's fine. Just you know, say
good things about me. Uh yeah, it's okay for him
to start and again it's a it's a three week
audition and you got an a saw. It's like we
when you want to audition for a conservatory, Like you
(13:36):
go to college and you're like, oh, you know, I'm
gonna play the you play the h you play the violin,
you make it okay, You're gonna go our next people,
and then the third one kind of like flash dance
a little bit, and so you gotta.

You just brought you perked everybody out. He's a welder
at night, and yeah, get those feed moving. So as
long as you do that, everything is all right. And
and so far he is ace that. Now he hasn't
been perfect, but he has been really really good. He
has done everything you would hope and want a quarterback
to do coming into the game. Look, just drove him

down in a field goal position, really bad, missed field
goal that could have cut the lead to twenty seven seventeen.
But not on him again. So far Week one, consider
this aste.

So again we got we still got a bunch of
games going on right now. In the fourth quarter, Arizona
leads the Raiders twenty seven fourteen. Fernando Mendoza's night is
done following that drive that ended in a missed field goal. Again,
we'd had great stuff on him a few minutes ago.
We would to find him. The best of it will
be there. Meanwhile, a couple of other big stories to

get to tonight. Some quarterbacks making headlines, and again because
it's week one of the preseason, you're making headlines for
not always the reasons you would hope your team will
make headlines for tonight. Earlier, Bengals beat the Lion sixteen fourteen,
hope you had the under And Joe Burrow played a
bit for the Bengals tonight about that, and maybe Joe
(18:43):
Burrow thought, who I could have actually maybe sat a
little bit longer and not actually played Burrough play face.

Burro slung down in the backfield back at the forty
yard line, got a toss down by hasidin.

NFL Network on the call. So yeah, that's kind of that.
When you saw that play, I'm like, oh, man, Joe Burrow,

believe they're on the right path than Joe Burrow and
the Bengals, because he will absolutely Aaron Rodgers things in

of my career here, two years left on my deal, X,
Y and Z. I need out right, that's what absolutely

That division will cannibalize you.

Because even though Biles Garrett has gone, guess what, they've
been pretty good at churning through guys there, and they
brought in Jared Verse.

He'll get after your ass too. So yeah, it's for
Joe Burrow. Yeah, you could see the writing down the wall.
You got all these skilled position players. It goes back
to what we were talking about a little bit with
the Raiders.

when the right or season comes. That paid him a
lot of money. He's really, really good and he's thrived
despite all of the operational inefficiencies and bad decision making
there in Cincinnati. All that said, first couple of possessions

Corey Dillon in the bag. I mean you had guys, man,
you had a bad offensive line and no d Hey

Bengals, Fanny Man. Make sure everything the Bengals do. Make
sure Joe Burrow loves you all season, loves you after
the season, loves you all the way through. Keep breaking
those willow sticks and make sure. I'm just want Burrow
to love me more than anybody else. He's wanted it
for so long. So he's just a little you know,
in love Burrow.

Well. But here's the thing, though, is that you know
Joe Burrow is you know, gets that little bit of
glimpse of Hey, maybe maybe life outside of Nikky is okay,

I mean look like if you if you suddenly have
the coaches that are duct taping the door shut just
for him to not leave the Bengals, then you're getting

I can't imagine he's in the film room and it's

And watch you see how it's really no one's fault

The other story another quarterback to get to tonight. That
was really fine And I was happy to see this
because all he has gotten is bad publicity since he
got taken very early in the draft a few years ago.
And yeah, a lot of it is of his own doing.
Someone that's you know, can't come out of a game
when you're tired. You got to make sure to work
at things. But Anthony Richardson playing tonight for the Colts,
(26:27):
that's as good as you could expect Anthony Richardson to play.
Threw the ball, okay, ran the ball really well. All right,
Like I was happy to see that he had a good,
positive game because it's been nothing. But this guy stinks
and he was overrated and overdrafted, and look, all those
things are true, but it was good to see finally
him to get Okay, he's got a couple of good
he got a good quarter plus under his belt where
(26:49):
he looked like the weapon they had when they draft
him a few years ago. Now, obviously his path to
playing is only if something happens to Daniel Jones. But
in this era of the NFL where everybody is quarter
back hungry, he plays well in the preseason, someone decides
to part with a pick. Maybe now he's played enough
football in the last because that was the whole thing. Look,
you want to know why he didn't hasn't seen a
quarterback in the NFL. He didn't play enough in college.
(27:11):
You can't go in and play thirteen games and suddenly
say I'm going to figure out how to play quarterback
in the NFL. He never figured out how to play
quarterback in college. His athletic gifts were incredible, right, And
I admit it's easy to get sucked in by how
good Anthony Richardson was at Florida. Look at what he
can do physically. But yeah, you can out physical guys
in college. But he never learned to really play quarterback again,
(27:33):
thirteen starts in college football. I love the Bill Parcells
school of well, I'm only going to draft the guy
that started games thirty times. You gotta start thirty times
in college football because then I know you can handle
a position. So he never learned to play in college.
You're not going to learn how to play the position
in the NFL. And that's what has held him back.
He never learned this is what I should be doing,
(27:53):
this is how I have to act, and it's all
it's a combination of getting the reps on the field
and the maturity level, all the stuff mentally that.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Goes into it.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Right, So he has been well behind since he jumped
into the league. Maybe now after being immersed in things
for you know, three plus years, he can figure it out.
Not to the extent where he's gonna start because again, clearly,
unless Daniel Jones gets hurt, he's not gonna play, which
maybe that happens, right because we talked about right, well,
we talk about it with other quarterbacks. You know they're
gonna play at some point because that's how it goes.
(28:22):
But maybe now he has gotten to a point where
he has become an asset again and he's learned how
to play quarterback to the best of his ability because
he came in the beginning, when he was just doing
his thing. He would have a horrible two and a
half quarters, and then a half quarter would go by.
It's like, wow, he just threw two touchdowns and they
kicked the field goal. Look what Richardson's done. So you
know he's got the talent. But now that maybe it's
(28:44):
for the Colts, maybe it's for another team, but you know,
it's good to see him playing this way and you
think that maybe it's something where he's still young. He's
still you talk about Sam Darnold's being Young's only twenty
six years old. He's been with seventeen teams. He wins
the Super Bowl. You know, the same thing you can
say for Anthony Richardson. He just needed to learn how
to play quarterback more than he had to learn to
(29:04):
fit in the right system and figure things out. And
I'm hopeful got my fingers crossed. He's a exciting kid.
It's fun to go watch. He learned all his lessons,
A lot of them were very public and not stuff
you want quarterbacks to learn lessons with, or so hoping
that maybe this is a bit of a corner turn
for him, maybe for his future with the culture someplace else.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
I remember when you're minting a Heisman trophy in studio
at the end of September, right, because we had a
couple of games, we got to watch him do his
heroics live and in living color, and it was it
was thrilling to watch. But there was also that note
of caution of there are only a small sample size
of games, and he was the shining example of Okay,
(29:44):
we decided he's our guy, but he's our guy of
the future. And if we got to let that clock
start ticking and he doesn't play right away, fine, Your
other quarterback that year was Gardner Minshew. Right, when you
start looking at it and through you had several big
talent guys, no question about it.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
At your skill position.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Jonathan Taylor, who gave everybody beer after signing his what
will essentially be a lifetime contract at this point. But
he got forced into action and he wasn't ready and
you watched it. He could make the big explosives, but
in terms of playing with time, down, distance, patience, and rhythm,
it was gone. And you can't unlearn that. And that's
(30:27):
one of the concerns with the Mendosa right. If you
start relying on your legs all the time to get
out of trouble that may or may not be there,
that eventually you have to relearn living and operating between
the tackles and standing tall in the pocket, et cetera. Richardson,
we never really got to see that because he got
into his scrambling mode, took a bunch of hits that
(30:49):
he didn't to your point, said some things, took himself
out of that game. And look, that was the most
unforgivable thing you can do, according to some Now you
have the redemp process, whether it's the Gino Smith, Baker Mayfield,
your guy Sam Darnold, keep going on down the line.
Plenty of quarterbacks who found I mean, look at we're
talking about Jacoby Brissett. How many teams have been on
(31:11):
at this point. I mean, there's a lot of guys
that it's taken several bites at the apple, the right system,
the right coach and patients to get the best and
coax the best out of a guy. Hopefully that athleticism

guy that works, he's my veg that's my barista. No,
he's a guy or a woman that works and makes
drinks for everybody at a coffee shop. Doesn't go there

when you go there just to make drinks for you specifically.
If he wants to be your barista, then it's got
to be somebody that makes drinks for you in your house,
like Davante Adams with a taco bell in his house.

Then it's your tacos life. That's not true. It's your
taco bell. Here's a taco bell. Yeah you haven't seen
the commercial with the taco bell in his house. Yeah,
it was a good commercial.

Yeah that's fake. I'm pretty sure that. I'm pretty sure
he said, Hey, I'll do the commercial, but you gotta
really pull one in mind.

I really do think.

I mean, he's made enough to where he can make
that a part of that deal. But be he could
stock that forever. He's gonna be the easiest gig to
have in the world. I mean, I only work when
when he needs taco bell great, and for.

Most people, you wouldn't have to start till like eleven o'clock.

So he's gonna be out of town half the time
doing living superstar lives.

Due what if he throws a party as like one
hundred and twenty people and you're the only one there,
you have to work, No.

No, no, You're gonna have to subcontract and break in
some extra help.

That was a thing that was a When I worked
the Carrier Dome in college, right, I would work, whether
it was basketball games or lacrosse games, whatever it was,
I would always work, and I would always try to
work on Sunday. And I would always want to work
the beer because I'm allowed. I was allowed to pour
beer even though I wasn't twenty one. You're still allowed
to pour beer. But I would always want to work
(35:18):
because the games would start generally at noon, and you
can't sell beer before noon in New York, so I
would just sit there while everybody else is coming up
order a bunch of stuff. I would have to work
for about fifteen minutes in my entire seven hour shift
at halftime of the game, because that's when everybody's showing
(35:39):
up again. Beer now, and then during the second half
and everything else, but no one's buying beer. No, I'm
not that busy, but at halftime, I'm inundated. But I'll
work fifteen minutes and bust my ass and I'll just
sit back and do nothing the rest of the day.
That was the best gig ever makes.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
It reminds me of the Lutis Sea, of the couple
of states where I've resided the second half of my
life thus far right, the liquor laws in New York, Yeah,
and whatever you want to call this state of California.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
So tonight was the Field of Dreams. Game, really fun,
a lot of pageantry. Phillies went at seven to one
over the Twins, Kyle Schwarber leading off with a home
un into the cornfield. Harold Baines, the first white six
player to come out of that I mean like they
you came out in waves, and in the first wave
was my guy Baines, and I'm sure smile. But here's the

thing is, we've seen this a lot now, We've seen
guys come out of the cornfield.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
You're seeing this.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
I have an idea that can make the Field of
Dreams game even better because children, because you have to
oh wow, yeah, well they were just like like like
like cutting themselves with knives, right, and yeah, that's a
tough one. I mean, if you could do that in
a fake way to really scare the fans going, whoa,
what the hell is going on?
Speaker 3 (36:48):
It's children of the corn man, that's what's happening. Wow,
I mean, you start Halloween early. It's it's amazing.

Let's just think about this idea. Then we'll ruminate on this,
because we can get into this in a few minutes
we get into Jerry Jones. Is that what if your
game for next? Because think about the movie Field of Dreams.
The White Sox show up and they play against each other.
But then we were having a tough, weird little board,
so we invited a bunch of other great players to
come player. And all these other great players so they're

playing a bunch of players. What if you had the
Field of Dreams game being an old timers game, let's
go and it's just players from the past few years.
You could have old timers from the White Sox that
just from the past few years that can still play,
can say yes, playing against the best old timers from

the past fifteen years or so in Major League. That's
an idea. Bring it there it is. Come on more
on this and Jerry Jones, who I agree with. Next
