Let's give this. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Hello, Welcome inside, Happy Wednesday, the Jason Smith Show with
my base friend Mike Harmon. I'm an ass man. For
over forty years, tire Rack's been open. Customers find the
right tires for how, what and where they drive, Shipped
fast and free, backed by free road hazard protection with
convenient installation options like mobile tire installation. Tirerac dot com
(00:51):
is the way tire buying should be. Well, we jump
right in. It's a big NBA and now we got
tons of NFL to get to. Oh yeah, but the
Knicks have broken their four game losing streak beating the Clippers.
Thank you, thank you. The Knicks championship medal proving again
I don't know why we're still playing basketball. I watched
(01:12):
Knicks win the championship at the end of last year.
They're just waiting for next November for the ceremony when
that's when they hang the banner. I don't know it.
But we're still playing, so that's fine. You're an exhibition,
that's okay.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I mean the Knicks are so talented, they're like the
modern day Globetrotters. Oh sure, yeah, bigger stage. I mean,
the globe Trotters are still out there, don't get me wrong.
They're still getting after it, but it's not quite the
same as we knew with Gee Sawsby and Curly Neil
in company.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Meanwhile, Lakers and the Spurs marquee game of the night
right now, early in the first quarter. Spurs lead at
sixteen eleven. Right now, the Lakers playing without Lebron James,
who is basically out because we'll get to the big
trade in a second. Don't worry, but h out because
basically he's old. Look I'm more or less said it.
Yeah he said, listen back to back to me. You
(02:01):
know we don't that that doesn't go together. Yeah, I don't.
I don't do that kinda left it out way.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
We'll see grab your popcorn and then uh d MP
so away he goes. We got Wemby on a miniature restriction.
He's already blocking Luca in the lane. Uh, they've got
the Emirates logo on the court though. Yeah, is a
Cup game or not?
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Well?
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Is it Cup part two?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Well?
Speaker 1 (02:25):
I think I think. You know, they were very upset
that they lost the first Cup to the Knicks, so
now they're trying to win a second Cup. This is
Cup two.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
They just said we want to rematch, like they lost
a title belt in horrible fashion, demanded a rematch immediately.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Not to google this, but this is two cups, airful,
I did, what, don't go two cups? David Robinson at
the game tonight, the Admiral, they just showed he still
looks like really, you know, they said that, boy, you know,
he does still look like he could play. He still
looks like he can play.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Well, you know, I heard an interesting stat listening to
a little bit of pregame fun. Wemby is one of
forty guys over seven feet tall playing in the NBA.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
The show, Oh, they're going to say in the world
there's forty people over seth of that.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
No, No, but I mean that's interesting, right, And that
because you don't think about it because it's always, Hey,
that guy's a giant.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
He's like, no, there's thirty nine others now, you know.
But the thing is what looking at Lebron on the sideline,
there's just certain times where I see, you know, you
see certain video of players that just happens to be
at the right time, and something sticks in your mind
about it. And I just looked at Lebron sitting in
street clothes on the sideline, not playing obviously, look you're
(03:39):
not playing him back to back yet thirty points last night,
and I looked, I saw the look on his face,
and I just said, man, he is miserable. This is
just a miserable year for him. The only joy he
could probably find is the is the whatever. However many
of the forty eight minutes a night he spends on
the court because he's been shunted aside for the Lakers,
it's Luca driven, you know, it's his life last year there,
(04:01):
it's probably his last year in the NBA, and this
is how Lebron's going out. I got to talk about
sitting out games and being old and trying to control
the narrative, and he just looks bad, like this is
not how it should end. And the thing is, I'm
with him on that. This is not how it should
end for Lebron James. This is a guy that has
stirred the drink for two bleeping decades in the NBA. Right,
(04:22):
whatever we want to say about all these other great players, yeah,
none of them hold the popularity or the interest that
Lebron James had. Love him, hate him down the middle.
I love his talent, I hate how he acts. Sometimes
I love everything about him. I hate everything about him.
This is not how he should go out, And I
feel like he's going out as a side player where
the entire world sees it, and I see his body language,
(04:45):
and I feel like it's affecting him. And I don't
know if he's trying to find trying to find the
right way to get past this. And again, the forty
eight minutes he spends on the court every night is
probably his one escape from it, which is you know, hey,
we always try to find that as well. No matter
what you're day is like, you find the escape where
you can forget about things that are bothering you for
a while. And I gotta think that he's just looking forward,
(05:06):
saying in the playoffs, I'm gonna take over and it's
gonna be my time again, and that's all I'm gonna
go out. But I see the way this is not
how Lebron James should go out here as a as
a side show with Luca. It's just I get what
the Laker. I'm not saying Lakers aren't doing anything anything wrong.
It's just I didn't see this happening for how Lebron
was gonna finish.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Now here's how it comes down. Remember the nineteen eighty
nine classic Batman after sitting in a chair with a
plastic surgeon that doesn't really know what he's doing. Mirror, Yeah,
Lebron needs to look in the minor. Okay, he opted
in for his fifty two point three. This is what
you get and he said everything right yesterday, Right, we're
(05:48):
it's Lucas squad.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
We all gotta fit in.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
And you can tell that it was like someone stabbing
him in the gut rematedly as that's going on, or
giving him a little little nudges like hey, you recognize,
I appreciate what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
But he looked pained.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Right, that's one of those Yeah, we all have to
fit in around him. It's Lucas Scott. Can you guys
turn the camera off. I really don't want to talk
about this anymore. That's where we're at with Lebron James
and this. He chose to come back to a situation
where he knew he wasn't gonna be the number one guy,
and it's made it uncomfortable.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
And there's spots.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Even last night's game look fantastic, right, lobs, big breakout dunks,
all of those great things, but minute to minute it's
parsed out, defensive inadequacies and all of those things. Look
at the Lakers have a great record, right, They're off
to a great start, But it's the noise that is
(06:47):
around it. It is the all right, when they do
lose against better teams, it gets magnified of all right
here where their deficiencies really are. They can beat up
on bums. There's a bunch of teams that are middling. Okay,
they can win those games, but then it's the step
up in class. Can you give a defensive effort consistently
and they close out games pretty well? Right, We've seen that.
(07:08):
There's a bunch of metrics to prove that out.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
But over the long haul. He chose this fate.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
He could have gone somewhere else and tried to be
the missing piece, the hero, the whatever. He decided to
stay with the Lakers, recognizing it was Luca time, and
you get what you get coming out of that. I
don't feel the least bit bad for him.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
No, you always get to pick most of your career.
You don't always get to pick the end, right, And
if you get to pick the end, that's very It's
a really big thing. Sure, And look for him, I
don't feel bad. I think about for the fans and
the general and the general content and the sheer moving
(07:51):
the needle that he's done for twenty years. This is
not how this kind of icon should go out right
like it should be. Not that it always needs to
be him, you know, hitting the shot over you know,
over Brian Russell and walking off the court before he
came back again, but it should be something better than hey,
here's Lebron who clearly is not even the focus of
things on this team. And the more this season goes
(08:14):
on where he needs more rest and he sits, is
it likely he's going to try to say, hey, one
more year, some play, am I gonna try that, Like,
if this is how he goes out, it really feels wrong.
Tom Brady didn't go out starting half the games for
the for the Patriots and saying, guy, I was hurt
and I came back. So Aaron Rodgers didn't go out
with the Jets. He made hey, okay, man, no no, no, no, no,
I want one more year. This is not happening my way.
(08:37):
So I get that, you know, as some athletes can
choose a little bit better than him. Opting into his
contract this year certainly limited his possibilities, but just the
overall picture of how icons finish, it's usually one of
two ways. I finish on my feet as a star,
and maybe my team doesn't win a championship, but I
finish I I am the guy, or I finish trying
(08:59):
to keep it going when I should have stopped. And
you wind up like Russell Wilson on the sideline with
the Giants or EMMITTT. Smith with the Cardinals.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Whatever you want to say, Hey, Russell Wilson got hurt,
but he told you he ripped his hamstring.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
It wasn't performance base, but.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Just to see a guy going out on a team
that he stirred the drink on for so long, like
he was the guy, and now suddenly I'm not the guy,
and this is how I wind up getting pushed out,
potentially into retirement. If this is it from me? As
each day goes on, it seems like this is. He
keeps talking about how old he is and everything else.
You would think if you were Lebron, you would talk
(09:32):
now about ice feel great. I can do X, Y
and Z if I really wanted to play again. I
got to show teams that I can do it. I
got to show Cleveland that, hey, you're having a bad
year this year, you had a great year last year.
I'm the missing piece. One more year where everybody can
throw flowers at my feet and I show up here
one more ring for the king. Whatever you want to do,
he's not doing it. To do it on a team
where you were the guy and now suddenly here comes
(09:55):
somebody in and you're not the guy anymore. It's awkward, man,
especially when you're saying this is this is how it
could be ending my career.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
But I go back to when the trade happens last
year and what he knew, what he didn't know, all
of that nonsense.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
I don't believe for a minute they did this in
undercover of.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Darkness and said, Tanna, here's a Luca for you, just
knowing again his status in the game, what he's meant
to this squad in the last few years. And I
know he's polarizing with Laker fans take or leave him
at times. But it's the idea of you came back
for another year, like Luca was already entrenched. Right, you
(10:33):
had the opportunity to go look around in the NBA
go sign somewhere for eight million or ten million or
whatever that number would be, maybe thirty whatever the case is.
You opted to get every bit of your money here,
knowing it was going to put you in this position.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Now, even yesterday, right, he was talking about all the
longevity and history and all this other stuff, because part
of it was they're getting ready to play Wembin Yama.
So it's like the bookends. You're at this end year career.
He just turned twenty two.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
All of that.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
I would have been highlighting all the plays, like we've
seen him do stat sheets stuff for years. Why would
he not have done it last night?
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, look what I was able to do to that.
Look what we were able to pull off. You know,
we don't have Austin. Look at what we're able to
do on occasion like this is where you do the
big cell job. But yeah, I don't know that you
end up in the Willie Mays and the Mets Uni.
I don't know that you end up in Joe Namath
with the Rams or all of those histories you brought up, EMMITTT. Smith,
(11:30):
et cetera. But you made a choice, and now it's
that difficult run it down and try to fit your
pieces in. Like I think he was trying to convince
himself that's what needs to be done, as much as
he was trying to make a declarative statement to the
press of oh no, no, it's his thing. It's like
it's almost like someone was holding up a mirror and saying, yeah,
(11:52):
I have to say these things because this is the
way it runs at this point.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
These these tools. I didn't have the right tools. You
see what I have to work quick.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
But a week ago, I mean a week ago, your
guy JJ Reddick had to talk about how weird and
convoluted and discombobulated it had been since Lebron came back.
Like he put it, he had put it out their
nebulous terms and then came back and doubled down and put.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
His name on. You know, I gotta be honest if
I'm Lebron and this season goes kind of like it
has been, right, the Lakers started out. Really, look, the
Lakers are better than anybody expected, right, So that's number one?
Now are they an NBA title threat? The way they
are constructed? The Lakers know, Look, they know they want
to move on from Lebron James. You know, they can't
(12:35):
wait till after this year and say, these are the
guys we know we need to put around Luca for
the next level of greatness for the Lakers. And we
watched the Lakers play great without Lebron for a lot
of this year, so you know it can happen. I wonder, right,
and I'm throwing the this is this is this the thing?
I wonder as we get closer to the All Star Break,
if the Lakers have something open to them that could
(12:59):
get them to that point point earlier, could get them
to that point at the All Star break, if they
could trade Lebron, if Lebron would say okay, and you
got a nuance it you got a nuance the hell
out of it. Right, We've got a science the hell
out of this. You have to nuance the hell out
of it. You have to call Cleveland. Hey, for a
last half year, this is not going well. We're not
We were at the top of the East. Now we're not.
(13:20):
We're having trouble competing with teams that are injured, with
missing their big stars. We're having trouble with younger teams. Hey,
maybe Lebron can get that half season of this is
my goal going away party, and I could maybe raise
us up and we can compete for one more championship. Maybe.
And if not, he still gets to say goodbye, he
(13:40):
still gets to say, Hey, in Cleveland, I'm just a
You could do the speech before the final game. I'm
just a kid from Akron. I did everything here, blah
blah blah. I really wonder if as we get closer
to you know, we're still we still got some time
before the All Star break coming up. But I wonder
as time goes on, if if you're not gonna see
this is I can't end like this. I need to
(14:01):
end some way, and there's some sort of push that
we can make a move, make a deal that we
can send Lebron we can get other things we want to,
so we get out of that fifty one million dollars
salary for Lebron and and potentially at the deadline. Lebron
accepts the trade, but it would only be to a
team where he could potentially win, and he could also
say goodbye if he doesn't win. There's not many teams
(14:22):
he's not gonna go to. Suddenly, Hey, trade me to
the Spurs where I can maybe, but no, it's got
to be where where can I go and I could
say goodbye? And the only place is Cleveland, And it
seems like there's a fit because they're at the bottom
of the East and the East is a path of
least resistance to the NBA Finals.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Do you have a contract to move him to Cleveland?
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Movement company? Get Lebron bat and he look and he
can go for a few months to come back to
LA and run his media mogul empire. You can do
everything you want. I'm gonna go for a couple of months,
come back. Everything is good. It's all good, man, I'm
gonna go. It's all good.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Did he have a percentage thing he needed to get
to and that's why he needed the fifty.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
One MILLI the whole ownership thing.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
I needed this for the extra percentage to make sure
this goes through. And I'm part of this group exit
out by a Frasca exit swallow dome. So just think
about that for Lebron, how wrong it looks to see
him going out like this and think maybe this is
when the trade is coming at the deadline. Maybe facing
a peak season like Lebron looking for a new team
member like you could call for Lebron. Work for solutions

got big NFL stuff coming up in a couple of minutes,
but a crazy ass NBA trade that I still think
is a headline from the Onion. Is that still a thing?
Speaker 4 (17:12):
You know? Oh?
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Yeah, yeah, dude. I get Onion stuff like in my
Facebook feed all the time.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
I get a lot of random stuff from my aunt,
but I'm not sure if it's real or you know,
from some.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Fugazy site no, which may or may not be the onion.
No stuff like the editor that says, uh uh man
had you know, man admits to quite a satisfying holiday,
not spending the time traveling to see his family. You know, like, Okay,
that's it. Headlights like that all I put that on
a T shirt? Right.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (17:38):
But you know most of us when you saw the
news earlier today, Okay, Trey Young is likely going to
get traded. We've talked about this for a while. Look the guys,
four time All Star in the Eastern Conference, one of
the best shooters since he came into the league, was
going to get trade was happening right, The era was
ending in Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Inevitable, no more tormenting the Knicks as a member of
the Hawks.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yeah, and I'm gonna you know, how much do you
think he called up the next you know, welcome off
the bench, man, God that guy for you. And then
we saw today the headline Trey Young's preferred destination was
the Washington Wizards. Wait, wait, wait what the Washington Wizards.
I'm like, hang on, So the Wizards win one game.
(18:20):
He checked, let's go make that trade for Tree. I
saw that, I've reread that.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
I'm like, someone like publish a typo, right, they had
something in an auto corrected and they published it anyway.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
I was like, no, that that's legit. I mean, that's
his preferred destination are the Wizards? I mean, and the
Wizards have not been over five hundred since twenty eighteen.
That's the last time they were over five hundred, and
the last five years they've not even been close to
five hundred. This is about as off the radar an
(18:57):
NBA team as there is, which is which you think
it's crazy. And Atlanta, which is a big market and
you got a lot of stars there. It's a big
star town. Like it doesn't sound it doesn't seem right right.
How is Atlanta not you know, blah blahlah. But now
I'm going to get traded to Washington, who is really?
I mean, they are the hoff of the NBA if
(19:17):
Atlanta is, I don't know how Atlanta is so far
off the radar screen being that city with watches like
where that's like, what what movie was it? Where they
went all the way to Neptune was what what what?
What movie was that where all we have to go
forget about going to Mars, like they went all the
way to Neptune to find Oh that that that horrible
title with Brad Pitt when he's the He's the find
(19:40):
Tommy Lee Jones. Right there was like there was like
a car chase on the moon, Like right, No, that's
suggesting that to me on one of the streaming services together.
I'm like, well, you know, if you click on F one,
you must like Brad Pitt stuff. I mean, if if
you're talking about Atlanta being Mars in the in the system,
(20:01):
like Neptune is where the Wizards are, this is your
preferred destination. I mean, And it's not like the Wizards
are a team that, hey, they get Trey Young, they'll
turn it around. Right, you had the number one pick
in the draft. That okay, you know you're building and
I get that, right, you had that, and things are
all right as far as that goes. But man, you
are sitting here at a team that is, you know,
routinely the last four years is thirty games under five hundred,
(20:24):
and this is where you want to go, Like this
is a team that's never gonna get it right, unless
they get lucky and get a number one pick in
the draft can keep them there for years. This is
your preferred destination. Do you really? Do you really care
about winning? Do you really want to And that's a
big thing coming off of this. It's not that, oh,
Trey Young will go here, probably get a contract extension,
(20:45):
say get stay and get paid. He could go a
lot of places, right, but you're gonna go to Washington.
And this is the first thing that tells me, Okay,
he doesn't want to win. He doesn't care about winning,
because you're not saying I want to go there. I
want to go there and turn it around because I
have this really big, deep connection to one. I mean,
I look at it, and that's the first I goes, Well,
he doesn't care about winning. He doesn't care. I mean,
I really I thought this was an onion story. He really,
(21:07):
this is your preferred destiny. Preferred destinations are Miami and
Los Angeles and Chicago. And it's not it's not a
team that, Hey, we routinely finish at the bottom of
the pack in the Eastern Conference. Is he a big
political guy? I don't know. Senator Trey Young had this
to say, following his four for twenty five performance floor.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
But legitimately preferred destination ten and twenty six. You're on
a team that's three games under. You got a couple
of nice young pieces in that in that space. The
other is, I mean what he gets dealt for role
player at a thirty four year old CJ.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
McCollum. Yeah, I mean, like, what are we doing here? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (21:48):
But wanting to go be a wizard and he wants
to wear the jersey that.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Michael Jordan wants.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Like I'm trying to find any answer. Does he vacation
off off season with a bunch of guys that are
already wizards?
Speaker 1 (22:02):
I don't know. He wants to wear that wizard's jersey.
So in the off season then he can go on
that Netflix card show and say that member Billy show
will say, hey, I got this jersey. You know, Jordan
wore it, he signed it for me. I wore What
can I get for it?
Speaker 3 (22:15):
I mean we were just joking out the fact that
there was big news in the hobby today that the
Upper Deck Company signed a deal to make Harry Potter cards.
So technically there's some wizards involved. But wouldn't you come
down to southern California if you want to do that.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
All right, Well, first of all, are the cards going
to be like the moving cards? I want to stay
working to one of those inserts that I can't expect
the headmaster to hang around all the time in that picture.
I don't know that'll disappear the same way. But we'll
see what they can do. But like, I mean that
that's your preferred because you think of Trey Young and
I think of the guy when he came out of college, right,
I thought, Okay, is he small? Yeah? What's his ceiling
(22:50):
if he becomes a great sixth man off the bench,
instant offense, because that was his game, you know, uh
in college. If he's that that kind of player, hey,
that's that's that's a great draft pick, right, and still
take him early because if he's that instant offense guy
coming in second unit, that's awesome. He's even been even
better than that. Now he's a volume guy. He needs
the ball, he needs a lot of shots. But at
(23:12):
this point is crift of being around seven eight years Yeah,
there's lots of teams You would think in theory would say, hey,
we don't have to give up a lot for him.
I would love to have him come in and come
off the bench at this point. Orbit but clearly you
see the value out there. Like, whatever you think about
your players on your team, the league always tells you
(23:34):
what the true value of them is. Right, Like I
thought about this, like when when when the Mets traded
Jeff McNeil over the winner break and Mets fans are
going crazy because we're like, oh, we lost Alonzo, he
lost Dad, we lost Jeff McNeil was a bad It's
batting champion four and a half year as a guy.
Speaker 6 (23:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
Right, But here's the thing is like, Okay, yeah, understand
that the value of Jeff McNeil was a seventeen year
old pitcher from the A's. That what's the value the
Mets would have gotten more from if they could. But
the league is telling you this is how we value
Jeff McNeil. So you would think that Trey Young would
be a guy that hey, there'd be lots of it.
We'd love to get instant offense. We'd love to get
(24:11):
a guy that can put up seventeen eighteen off the bench,
whatever it's going to be, because really to fit him
into your system, that's kind of where he would have
to be where we come off the bench and do
his own thing. Then you can try to see as
time goes on, if it's easyough to slip into the
starting lineup competit, you know, a team competing for a championship.
But like you would think that he would be out
there and I don't care if his preferred destination was
that there's a team like the Warriors or the Spurs
(24:33):
or the Thunder or whoever else is like, hey, no, no, no,
we need that guy. We'll give you a little bit
more than CJ. McCollum and a role player, right, Like,
I mean that you would think that could have happened
and a forget about that, let's go here. But that
didn't happen, and you found out the Wizards of his
preferred destination. Of course, the Hawks saying, oh, fin, I
don't have to worry about tradeing any place where you're
gonna come back and burn us. So yeah, go ahead,
we'll trade you lower in the standings. So that, again,
(24:56):
that really really surprised. I'm still in shock with the
fact that this is where he goes and this is
this is the team he wanted to get traded. I
don't know what's a bigger shock that he actually got
traded to the Wizards or that he actually wanted to
go to the Wizards.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Yeah, he's missed a ton of time. He's only played
ten games on the year the last four years, hasn't
shot better than forty three percent to your point on
the volume, to where in the vernacular he would be
called a chucker at this point that you get to
a decent scoring average only by volume, kind of like
you're making change in that old SNL skit. We can
(25:32):
give you five five ten dollars bills and twenty a
bunch of Nichols, you know that kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
Uh, it is just bizarre.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
And he's not the guy been a couple of years ago, right,
average twenty eight a game. It's a long way since then.
You know, you're talking about Jeff McNeil and players like that.
Trey Young's not that guy anymore. He's missed five games
because of a thigh contusion.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Right, which is why, Hey, you come in operation off
the guy and be that guy. Right, I mean he
wants to get paid again eventually, right, you want to
get paid again, Like that's that's where I saw his
his president. Nowgy where I saw him back and he
you know, coming out of college. But now this is
kind of where you are, and there's lots of teams
say we we could use a guy because all you're
doing when you're coming off the bench playing shooting guard, Okay,
(26:17):
you get to shoot. Go out there, you know you're
playing However many minutes a night, instant offense. You're up
against a team, second unit. Go do your thing man.
You're a bleeping four time All Star. You're still in
your twenties. Go do your thing man, Go do your
thing man. Let him say it, let him cook a
little bit, like that's what that's what I should see for.
I mean, this is a guy that was such a
big star when he came in. He was a star
(26:37):
for a long time. We thought he was going to
be the next great player to raise the the Atlanta
Hawks up right, because its been a long time since
Doc Rivers and Dominique Wilkins were playing there, right, John
concact been a long time at that year. Uh, But
and it never happened, which was kind of a shock.
Like so many things with his career have been shocking
along the way. And and this is really the biggest
(26:58):
part of it. Yeah, it's got a big deal.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
It also shows you, as you said, the marketplace expiring contract,
you're not gonna give up any discernible assets for a
guy who's been on a four year decline, missed a
ton of time due to injury, uh, and is looking
for that next big deal. So yeah, unless you are
replete with draft picks to just say okay, here's a
bunch of stuff and one veteran like a CJ. McCollum
(27:22):
in the big salary to make it work, you're gonna
be limited in those options and you move forward. But yeah,
just a head scratcher as you go through one of those.
All right, here's the dump. You're happy and you get
out of here, your preferred destination Washington. Why because you
go take over like there's nobody gonna impose you.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
Yeah, it's it's gonna be easy for me to be
the star here. I like being the guy that takes
all the shots and no one questioning me, and you know,
feeling like you're lucky to have me, and and well
that's why I want to go be that. That's why
I want to go do that, be there, go live
in Uh, anonymity. There you go. I want to I
want I don't want pressure winning. I don't like that.
I don't like any of that stuff. I want to
just go where I could just play basketball car in
(28:04):
New York City anymore and jump around? But how much
do you want to? And I'm just I'm just thinking,
how much do you think he pursued to an extent? Hey,
the Knicks don't want me the next I really like
playing there. I really That's like the only time anybody
pays attention to anymore is when I play in Madison Square.
Clearly playing an MSG revs Him up would be okay.
(28:28):
And Trey again coming off the bench, I'd be okay
with bringing in Trey Young for that. He loved anybody
that at MSG.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
Go ahead, man, Yeah, but with your that forty six
million whatever is left of it tag at this point,
you'd have to give up several key role players and
bench players. Yeah, but it's okay, okay, see the sarcasm dripping.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Ye have to give that up? WHOA, I'm not giving
up a championship. No, no, no, no, Portray Young, No,
not giving up a championship for that. No, we already won.
We want to say again, I don't know why we're
still playing basketball, but we so. I have to humor
everybody that's watching because we already won the champions Someone
yelled run it back, and here we are. It's all right,
exit out about a Fresco exit Swallen Dove just that
(29:09):
everything seems weird with this Trey Young situation. Time now
to find out what's trending in the wide world of
sports with a guy who one time in college took
more shots in a game than Tray Young. Really, it's
Martin Weiss.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
The game was at Skeeps the bar On South University
in Antarvy.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
That was the game. It was Papa shot. Sure, he
took sixty shots in a minute. You took seventy five.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
You talk about the Trey Younge situation. It feels weird.
Looking at the NBA slate right now, this feels weird.
It's overtime, one minute and five seconds left in the game,
and the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Utah Jazz and
a dogfight one co two to one nineteen shake Gilbims.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
The hell has happened to Oklahoma City?
Speaker 4 (29:48):
Man?
Speaker 5 (29:48):
What has happened to them? I go on vacation suddenly
they can't win. They what happened to you went on vacation?
They seem like they went on vacation, looking like you
know a team. The Jazz have four road winds.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Ever this season, since they went to the finals in
ninety six and lost to the Bulls, they have four
red wins.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
Lloyd Market has just put in another bucket, ched Holmgren
with the fouls, So now it's one, twenty one to one,
twenty two to one, twenty one with forty five seconds
left in overtime. Four minutes left in this first half
for the Spurs and lakersan Antonio with a forty three
to thirty nine lead. Luka doncis just three assists away
from my first half double double twenty points, seven assists
(30:27):
so far. Eleven minutes left in the second quarter the
Bucks and the Warriors, Milwaukee leads thirty three to thirty one.
Steph had ten first quarter points and with one minute
twenty seconds left in the first quarter of the Rockets
and Blazers, Portland leads twenty one to twenty sorry twenty
two to twenty one. Danny Avjo with ten points, Kevin
Durant also with ten. Other notable games. The Pistons beat
(30:49):
the Bucks. I'm sorry Bulls. Pistons beat the Bulls won
eight to ninety three. Vucevic with a twenty points sixteen
rebound night. Isaiah Stewart career I had thirty one. The
seventy six beat the Wizards one thirty one to one ten.
Joel Embiid with twenty eight point seven rebounds. Don't worry,
Washington helps on the way. Trey Young again traded to
(31:09):
Washington for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
Atlanta was in action today.
Speaker 6 (31:14):
Trey Young said goodbye to all his teammates as the
Hawks beat the Pelicans won seventeen to one hundred. Rechoche
with twenty five points in a rebounds. Nuggets beat the
Celtics one fourteen to one ten. Jamal Murray twenty two
points seventeen assists. The Buccaneers head coach Tod Bowles said
he met with ownership Wednesday afternoon. Expects to coach the
team in twenty twenty six. Trent Williams Ricky Pearsall were
(31:35):
among those who missed practiced for the forty nine ers
on Wednesday. Shanahan not sure if Williams will practice Thursday.
Lane Johnson did practice for the Eagles that game forty
nine er Eagles obviously coming up this weekend.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Bears defensive back c J.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
Gardner Johnson did not clear concussion protocol miss the second
straight practice. Ravens their open head coaching position, requesting interviews
with the Dolphins defensive coordinat Anthony Weaver, see Hawks offensive
coordinator Clinton kobiak Ala member quarterback Tye Simpson and defensive
back for Ohio State Caleb Downs both announced they're leaving
college early to declare for the NFL Draft. And uh,
(32:13):
where are we? Oh, the Chiefs fire the wide receiver
coach Connor Embry so that I'm sure we'll fix all
the offensive issues.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yes, it's still probably all eric the enemy's faults. It's
all one. Thanks so much, Martin. You know, the video
is hilarious of of uh that's going around on social
media now of when Trey Young found out he was
traded during the game immediately because he wasn't playing tonight.
Just turned and walked off, just walked off, just walk by. No, goodbye,
hey man, it was great city. I'm gonna go gonna
(32:42):
go bye bye. Well, it's not about me. Anymore. Walking away,
I'm walking run. He just turned. It's a it's almost
like seeing him. It's almost like someone like when you're
in line at school and you're on a field trip
and the teacher calls him and say, Trey, come back.
Oh sorry, just turn around, walk back.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
It's it.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
He's out. He got his prefer destination. He's a Washington wizard.
He's a wizard. I mean, this video is just amazing.
Well but I.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
Mean, you're so choked up over it over a guy
who's a four time All Star and was one of
the great shooters for a minute.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Gave you some heartburn as a Knicks fan.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
He'll have to do that as a member of Yeah
whatever though, whiz now a few movies to him, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
At least Atlanta had hope, dude. Now they have Resuchae
exit out bout a Fresca exit swollen Dome. Coming up
next after big NFL news today, it is very easy
to tell you which college football team this year was
easily the most disappointing. That's next right here, Jason and
(33:47):
Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Sports Radio Jason Smith's Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.
We got a big football debate coming up in about
ten minutes. But look, the last couple of days has
been owned in the news cycle of coaches getting fired,
who could be getting hired, players hitting the transfer portal,
(34:19):
players declaring for the NFL Draft, and a big double
barrel of news. Today tells you exactly who the most
disappointing team in college football is this year. And it's
not even close. Jets. It was college football. The Jets
would disappoint in college football. They would I'd say three
and fourteen, maybe in a Power five schedule, Yeah, five
(34:43):
and six, Yeah, I played it. Maybe Bowl eligible they
played maybe maybe the go I played it on the computer.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
They were the last in when a couple of teams
didn't want to play at a ball, So they got
hit at five and six.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
If they're playing in a lesser if they're not playing
one of the Power four conferences, maybe eight and four.
Yeah it could be and a dark horse candidate for
that conference championship game. Yeah, what's out? Do you think that? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (35:07):
They might have been able to fight. Uh you know
your guy?
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Oh they look they would have beatn Montana State in
the FCS Championship. Jets would have won that game like
twenty three to fourteen. Day'd have won by almost double
twenty three. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yah yeah, oh, a lot
of they would have Well, Breezce Hall would have had
a big day. He would have had a big day
running the football. That would have happened. Uh now, double
barrel news. They were seeing big stars declared for the
NFL Draft, and today Caleb Downs and Carnel Tate from
(35:34):
Ohio State declared for the NFL Draft. Yeah. Caleb Downs,
who look for me, honestly, he's my first non quarterback
that I take in the draft. He is just I
watched this guy play for a long time. Getting him
is like getting Rod Woodson. I mean that's how That's
how I for Jacks, right. He does it all. There's
no flags for him. Ball skills, tackling skills, intelligence, He
(35:56):
is as perfect as you can get for a play.
There's other great players up there, but Caleb Downs, like me,
you are gonna be getting an all time great safety
who can just plug right in and suddenly he's the
captain he's making all the big player. You are getting
a great, great, great player. Again outside you need a quarterback.
I get it because that happened. But first guy I
would take outside of quarterbacks is Caleb Downs. Look at
(36:17):
you now you also look at Okay. So now going
to the NFL Draft this year from Ohio State, Downs, Tate,
Marvel Reese, Sunny Styles. These guys are all projected to
go in the top fifteen. Three of them will probably
go into Styles, will probably go a little bit outside
(36:37):
the top ten. But there's gonna be some There's gonna
be some some needy teams in his position.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Oh that's the beauty of it is that this is
a very defensive Hey, we need to shore things up defensively.
And you look in the middle of the first round,
there's a bunch of teams that were the the also
rans in terms of points allowed. And if he was
jumping in the draft, but he's not, Jeremiah Smith, that
would be five guys in the top fifteen. You have
four players that are being taken the top fifteen of
(37:04):
the NFL Draft, and you lose your first playoff game,
you lose the last two games of the year coming
off a National Championship. You have this kind of talent
and you with a buye and you couldn't win one game,
you go home in the College football Playoff. There is
no team more disappointing this season than Ohio State. No
(37:25):
team more disappointment.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
There's teams that I'm not saying they are the worst
though obviously, look they were great during the regular season,
but this should have been we are waltzing to back
to back championships with this kind of talent, right. I
told you how Michigan blew it a year ago. All
the first round talent they had coming out of the draft,
they blew it because they didn't have a quarterback. They
couldn't get in the portal and get somebody, and they
ruined last year coming off the National Championship where potentially
(37:46):
could have gotten back to the playoff. That was a
big fail. This is worse because you had everything if
you're Ohio State and still this is what I again,
When you see this many guys being taken this high
in the draft, man, you go back and go, wow,
how the blank did we lose? Man? No more disappointing
team than Ohio.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
I just remember all year long, it was a lot
of questions of you know, what is this squad when
they're actually tested and you go through their schedule, not
a lot of big heavyweights because even by time they
played Penn State towards the back end, well that's the
end of the James Franklin run. You got Purdue Ucla,
all these also rans the win over Michigan, so it
(38:24):
became the All right, they're top of the chart next
to Indiana. But how strong are they? How good are they?
And I use the word strong very particularly because they
got bullied by Miami. Right you're talking about one hundred
yard differential between the rushing yardage and just they got
beat up at the line of scrimmage on both sides.
(38:46):
And that was they were soft, Like you have all
this peripheral talent and as you're talking about, you know,
quarterback safeties, there's only so much they can do, right,
It's all about your interior lines. Those guys were great.
They didn't get to make plays because they didn't have
to because Miami just played Bully Bowl.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
It is it's a it's any given Saturday, anything happened.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
I find you got the bye week, which is really
starting to come under scrutiny for a million other reasons.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
But it's not like Miami came in as this high
powered offensive team and outscored you, or they came in
as this really one of the great defensive teams of
all time and shut you down. Ohio State one of
the great defensives.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
But we knew it, like Miami's defensive front was was
you know, highly Harris, this.
Speaker 1 (39:29):
Is a really and a Miami team that I like,
I mean like I like them beginning of the season.
We'll preview that game next hour. But like, this was
not a Miami team that came in going, oh man,
it's a bad matchup that they do a lot of things. Okay,
this is Ohio State and this is an NFL team,
and they couldn't and they couldn't win. I don't know
what's you say, what's more disappointed Ohio State fans the
way this year ended, losing to Michigan last year. I
(39:52):
don't know. I don't no more disappointing team. You can't
change that.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
You've been talking about how it's liver or die on
both sides of that thing forever.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
This was not on what did you lose? Though?
Speaker 3 (40:02):
You got embarrassed because you got run over. Right, it's
one thing to lose. It's a close game. It's a
tight game. You watched that game. They weren't in it.
They didn't play well at all. No, it was I
am so embarrassed for a house and No, and I'm
sure maybe another couple of guys will sneak into the
first round somewhere, look.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Even worse for a lot of state. Sure. Coming up next,
we got that big football debate on the way from
the biggest topic the last twenty four hours. Fox
