Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Greetings, Welcome in side, Happy Friday, The Jason Smith Show
with my bes friend Mike Harmon. Where I don't know
at this point, Mike Harmon, if the United States is
just trolling Canada bringing Keller into the game in the
sixth inning that they're leading five. Now look wait, you

(00:49):
don't care where we took hockey from you, Men's hockey,
women's hockey. Here comes Oh, it's not Megan Keller. So
we're still bringing Keller in to pitch against you here
in the sixth day. We're just trolling Canada at this point.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Should have had a giant K behind him with the
letters K E double L E. Are either that or
he should have had Clayton Kershaw. I'm walking out like
he was Razor Ramone. I had something of that. I mean,
it's just, uh, they have a little conga line going
there for a minute. Look, it started out oddly. Whenever

(01:22):
an error leads to early runs, you just start shaking
your head, going we could have we were with them
except for that. But here we are on a beautiful
Friday night, USA, USA. Not even your negativity can take
us down.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
What are you talking about? Just be I have When
Aaron Judge strikes out against a kid who's a high
school pitcher, I have to say it. I can't, I
can't ignore it. You kind of reveled in it when
he's when he's a junior varsity freshman who tops out
at sixty seven and Aaron ros and Aaron Rodgers. He
strikes out Aaron Rodgers. And when when Aaron Judge grounds

(01:56):
into a triple play, I gotta say it, man, I
can't exaggerate.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
But Aaron Rodgers being in the darkness, I mean the
ball coming from the light to the dark. I mean
that's a difficult proposition and maybe a parlor trick that
he's working on. But well there's that.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
During these things, I gotta say exactly what's going on here?
But where we are right now, well, that'll be it
for Keller apparently, curse Keller.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Well, I mean I think it was a troll. Jobs,
come on in and get your one out. Get the
Canadian fans Madden over there.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, you think when Keller came in they played, because
I can't tell that they play on the uh. Keller
in for the United States. Canada has a lot of
experience with Keller, and they showed the game winner UH
and the gold medal winner in the big move. But uh, yeah,
it was a very short appearance and a very short
troll because Brad Keller out of the game. Now he's
given up a single UH to drive in to help

(02:47):
the Canada drive in their first run of the game.
Still a five to one United States lead, but Canada
on the board here in the bottom of the sixth
in the United States bottom of the lineup, getting it done.
Bryce Terrang's got a couple hits an RBI, Pete Krow
Armstrong's got a couple hits in an RBI Logan Web
pitch is fantastic. A little over four innings. First WC

(03:07):
pitcher to go more than four innings, strikes out five,
no runs, comes out after seventy one pitches. So now
United States, it's they get out of this inning. You're
hunting out to get to the next round where unfortunately
the Dominican Republic is waiting. And this is it. Really
it's like a youth sports turn to where you're going, Okay,
we won this game. Oh man, we gotta play that

(03:28):
team next. They won ten tohing, eleven to one thirteen. Nothing.
They won by a mercy because they just mercied in
winning tonight. Yeah, suddenly Dominican Republic is it? Is it
one of those Yeah, it's gonna flyd by them and
get into the championship against Japan. Yeah, it's gonna be
a tough one.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Funny thing happened on the way too. The weight of
the show, I mean to some degree though, I mean,
let's look at the competition, right, we got we gotta
do a little bit of that in terms of what
was in that bracketology. Not exactly a heavyweight. You look,
you can only beat who's on the schedule, that's true.
And then they bludgeoned them. They did not take them lightly.

(04:06):
There were no managerial missteps of roster management or late
night pow wows to celebrate a game. Thinking the next one, well,
didn't matter, and all of those things wait, that didn't
Wait that sounds familiar, all of that to say, well
and challenge excepted. And then you get Venezuela and Japan

(04:26):
on the other side.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Man, beautiful times seven inning, ten run rule for the
Dominican Republic beating Korea ten zip. And look, I mean,
I know that we talked about all United States and Japan.
They're on a collision course. It's like, dude, look at
the Dominican Republic lineup? Are you kidding me to tease
Marte Sodo, Guerrero, Machado, Kaminero, Rodriguez. Come on, man, I mean,

(04:49):
I mean, really, what all of us? Hey, it's gonna
be us in Japan. Oh dude, dude, Dominican Republic is
just hot knife through butter all of these teams in
the World Baseball Classic. I mean, we're having enough trouble
with Canada tonight. Try to just stay ahead of them
and put them away before we move on. Now.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
To be fair, I mean, the general rule of thumb
is we want to see the rematch of the heavyweights
we saw last time. Now it won't be Otani versus Trout,
but we want something of that ilk, and especially when
Sho heeo Tani is the biggest name in all of
the sport. This game is on Fox, so clearly you're
talking about big moments the last couple of years in

(05:24):
the World Series that you want to see that continue. Yeah,
you might overlook folks for a moment and start thinking
about the big flies and big opportunities down the stretch,
But yeah, you got to take care of business day
to day before that. I mean, I'm not going DeRosa
here in looking into that. It's just more the wishing, wanting, hoping,

(05:45):
hope is it? Sometimes the best of things sometimes dangerous
Jason Smith, you know this.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, No, hope hope is dangerous and also dangerous. Maybe
they should have left Keller in the game because now
Spires just come in and given up a two run
jack to Bowe Naylor. That spired Chris Spye. Not none
of those expos teams from the seventies. Man, Why do
we keep bringing those guys in? Why is Andre Dawson
in the game? What do we do?

Speaker 3 (06:09):
He doesn't have a logo on his hat anymore. Why
is Warren Crowmarty in the game?

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Come on?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah, Mon Naylor, No, doubt about. Hey, the crow flies
at midnight, uh second deck into right field to make
it a five to three United States game over Canadate. Look,
and this is what we've talked about from the beginning, right,
is that when I said, okay, where where's your weakness?

Speaker 4 (06:31):
Right?

Speaker 1 (06:32):
This is the best lineup we've seen by the United States.
The starting pitching is great, right, I mean when we
tried out the starting pitches we have, whether it's Webb McLain, Schooble,
if he stays, if he goes skins, not a problem.
But the issue What did I say was the bullpen
because it's gonna be a heavy bullpen game every game
because you don't have guys who are gonna go seven innings. Right,

(06:53):
you know Skeens isn't gonna go seven. He's gonna throw
fifty pitches in the Pittsburgh Pirates are good, and Livy
dnn is gonna be on the phone going that's it,
that's it. Right, he's out, he's out. You gonna take
about No, No, she's training to be in the new bay
Watch anymore. No, I think she's still No. I think
she cares. I think they're actually doing Baywatch at the
World Baseball when they.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Bring the theme song back.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
To idu't be there, you know, No, that's that's friends.
You're doing the wrong. Yeah, but what did I say
was gonna be the issue for the United States was
gonna be the bullpen, And here they are in already
making their presence felt in this game with two home
runs giving up. The United States give up a lot
of home runs, ten home runs in twenty eight innings

(07:32):
so far in the WBC. So it's not like the
United States pitching has been great. Look, the starters have
been terrific. But this is what I was nervous about.
When you get to the bullpen and the bullpen's are
going to go five innings at least in every game.
This is what makes me nervous a little bit for
the United States. Yeah, it's pretty insane. The uh I
mean the prodigious blast too. It's not cheap front row

(07:52):
home runs here. That just keep the ball in the park, man,
come on, work the plate a little bit. I don't
think they're using abs here, are they. They're not.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
They're not going to the robots. But yeah, just I
mean that that was a no doubt or home run here.
But the margin for error for the United States has
just been so minimal here. You know, we talk about
whenever we do statistical surveys that three to five percent
error range. Yeah, no, no, we're we're real flirting with

(08:23):
danger at every turn. As much as I love get
them on, get them over, get them in baseball, a
couple of extra big flies on the US side, it
would be pretty nice here because the nickel and diming
is giving you a marginal lead here in the bottom
of the sixth.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
So I'll have more on this coming up a bit again.
Bottom of the sixth in the United States. Now clinging to
a five three. We started talking eight minutes ago. Hey
we're up five. Now we're clinging to a lead. Now
we're clinging to a five to three clinging. But let's
do something fun here. Let's give you the play of
the day right now. It's been a big day in

(08:58):
college basketball. To play the day, of course. Brought to
you by tire i Rack. For over forty years, tire
Rack's been open customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Shipped fast and free backed
by free Road, has protection with convenient installation options like
mobile tire installation tire rack dot Com is the way
tire buying should be. Well, when you hit a buzzer beater,
when you hit a Kobe Bryant, it wasn't a great look,

(09:21):
but I still psychic buzzer beater. Anyway, you get to
be the play of the day, Tom more than an
Indianapolis no.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Chances gets hit. The ballers loose and it's alive.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
There's a thing here and part of me and I
can't believe there's a part of me that that that
wants this. Maybe just a party, maybe just my liver,
but there's a part of me like, can I get
another crazy bad Jets play. I'm not asking for it.
What I'm saying is your waist at the stop fail? Mary? No, No,

(09:57):
I'm like, I really would like a really bad Jets play.
So at least when we play the fails and it's
something new, it's not the butt fumble for the five
hundred and seventy eighth times, but here's the meil Mary
for the one hundred and forty seventh time. I mean,
something new. At least it's something. I mean, I know
what's gonna happen, so why not have it happen and

(10:18):
just have something we can use on the show.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Well, it just means you're you're failing with less style.
Is that good or bad?

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Ah?

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Okay, it's flying, I mean stopping right, But I mean
you're still failing. Your team still stinks, but you're you're
not having that play that defines the season necessarily the
same way. I guess that's progress. Yeah, I mean Gino's
coming to town. So maybe maybe on this second outing
he'll he'll give you something more than getting punched in
the face.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Genus Smith is coming to town. Oh, Geno Smith is
coming down now. So with that out of the way,
we have to bring you the play of the day.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Burn. It's not just the first shot, it's the offensive rebound.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Brad Way.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
Trying to do it himself because beheaded they will look
at it to make sure that it beat the clock.
But Jaden Bradley appears to have won it for Arizona,
the highlight of conference championship week just a few moments ago.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Jade and Bradley of Arizona hits the game winner fallaway
at the buzzer. So now Arizona into the Big Twelve
championship now after beating Iowa State, who had just hit
a big three to tie the game a couple moments ago. Look,
the excitement level of the NCAA tournament is going to
be unparalleled the last decade. It's just that that kind

(11:46):
of year that we're having. But man, I'll tell you what,
Jaden Bradley does not get a good look. He is
deed up incredibly well. This is a Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant.
I'm gonna find a way to get a shot off
and it's gonna go. And he dribbles to the right,
he doesn't have anywhere to go to the basket, and
he kind of stops in one motion fall away and

(12:07):
he hits it, and I just know what's gonna happen.
Mike Carmen, I'm gonna once again pick Arizona to go
to the final four of my bracket and be absolutely
disappointed when it doesn't happen. Yeah, but I can't have
an Arizona. I can't. I can't quit Arizona and Saint John's.
I'm like, I'm gonna pick Saint John's. I can't quit
these teams, man, and I have to find a way
to do it. Man, it's like smoking. I gotta find
a way, but I can't. I'm like, oh, man, Arizona,

(12:29):
they're so good this year, and here they are on
a high this and and Jayden Bradley is so good
and I'm gonna find it. I'm gonna find a way
to pick Arizona again. They're gonna lose in the second round.
I'm gonna go. I never learned. I never learned. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
And then when I don't pick them, they run deep
into the tournament. That's just generally the way it goes.

Speaker 6 (12:45):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
And here's the thing though, if they do bow out early,
I have Arnie Spanier's phone number, and you can harass
him until you're blue in the face. Oh okay, I
call him and all of that stuff. Maybe maybe you
could go and key is car or do the tire
thing that you always threaten us with because it's his fall.
By the way they were playing on that absurd court,

(13:09):
whatever the hell that was.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Yeah, I think I think after this year. I think
the when when they have a meeting, uh, you know,
whenever they well like whenever you have a big post meeting,
whenever you know, wherever you work and you put a
big event up and you didn't say okay, let's have
a meeting and talk about what went right and what didn't.
I got a feeling like if there's a big college
basketball post conference championship week meeting, you know everybody's gonna

(13:31):
sit around and the first thing's gonna be, Okay, are
we done with the floors? I think the floor thing
is not good. I think we have to move on.
We had like we had, we had one. We had,
we had one conference say hey, we're changing the floors
for the rest of the way. We can't have the
floors go. I think we've gone a little floor crazy
and let's just let's dial it back a bit for
next year. Is that first thing everybody in agreement? Okay,
let's move on to other things now, like winning the

(13:51):
conference championship and going if you're in a mac so.
But I think right now, the number one thing you're
gonna see is, yeah, we're gonna get rid of the floor.

Speaker 6 (13:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I mean, unless it's gonna light up with each dep
you take. If you got the ball like it's got
a chip and it's gonna play musical notes like you're
on the giant piano and big I don't need it.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Oh that was like, like what was it Roberts No, No, no, no,
was that like Billy Jean right when you when Michael
Jackson every every every spear he stepped on lit up. Yeah, okay, see.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
If we do that and I can get on board that,
and now he's getting Now we start talking about the
rhythm with which a point guard is playing, and we
use our collective intellect to decide what in tune he's
playing with each like, like instead of showing you you know,
when you see the dots, here's where all the shots
have come from this half. Look at all these shots

(14:38):
from behind the three point like, it's let's retrace the
steps of the point guard and see where he hits
all through.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
The court.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
That's it, just adjusted.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
Yeah, No, I'd be all right with that, right. But dude,
I I know, I know I'm gonna pick. I'm gonna say,
I'm not gonna pick. I'm not gonna do it, not
gonna do it. I'm gonna pick Arizona.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
No, you're gonna do it.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
I know it. I I got it. I mean I
put them on my never again less. I always say,
once you're on the never again less, you don't come
off it. But I just know something's gonna happen. I
just I just.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
Lamed the dog ate your homework, and then you put
Arizona in for this year, they fail and they go
back on the list.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Yeah, and there you know, you just made the list.
I already know him to do it with Saint John's.
I mean I had last year. I felt so good
and then man, they just let me down so much.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
You were so angry.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Rjie Lewis. R J Lewis just let me down.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Like we make a lot of predictions on the show.
We tried to get ahead of the curve then in
every respect, but when a game goes wrong, like that
was the first time I think he really took it personally.
It's kind of like Kyler Murray yesterday when you were
mad that he signed with the Vikings.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
I was like it like it was all out of spite,
as if they went out and they failed in that game.
Just to shut you up. Yeah, that guy's on board
with us. Nah, we can't have that.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
R J.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
Louis just he just tanked it to make me mad.
They kept playing to tell you, oh, your restaurant, we'll
show them.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Exit out Vuta Fresca exit swollen Dome, Jason Smith, My Cartman,

(18:23):
against Canada, things get a little weird right now. Canada
has the time runs it's second and third, nobody out
as they bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Like I said, USA bullpen, this is where things get
a little dicey. But it's been an incredibly exciting day,
exciting week, exciting season in college basketball. Joining us now

It's Pete fu Tech. Pete. What's happening man? How are you?

Speaker 4 (19:15):
What's going so? Am I wrong? What am I missing here?
It shouldn't United States baseball be kind of the equivalent
of Canadian hockey where it's like, how do they lose?
Shouldn't it be like way better than everyone else? Or
do I just not know my my international baseball?

Speaker 1 (19:33):
Well, I mean you saw what happened with us in
Canada and hockey. I mean, you know you never know sometimes.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Yeah, well exactly it was a yeah, it was a
gag by the Canadians, but like, uh yeah because.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Them USA bullpen, tm USA bullpen. That's what this is.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
So basically America cannot produce a proper closer at this point.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
Yeah, that's what it is. We need to do it.
We need to do a have a big reality show
search for a closer, and you know, go through a
whole thing and people get roses and at the end, hey.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
You're a closer, Well can't you just take can't you
just take like a really good starting pitcher and like
four of them and just like figure it out for
the ninth inning and get creative? I mean, where's the ingenuity?
Where's everything that you know? Where is that fire that
made the American hockey team pull this off? And that
I just it just seems like is it Also, isn't
every game like nineteen to two, every time I see

(20:22):
it crawling the bombs the screen like like someone's just
getting pummeled in one of these games.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
Well that's when the Dominican Republic plays God. Yeah, yeah,
that's what they do.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
But I already know Pete. You you are more into
this and know what's going on more than Team USA
manager Mark de Rosa. So I will next time this
comes around, I will vote for you to manage a team.

Speaker 4 (20:41):
You know, you know what, I would absolutely be just
as good. I mean, how hard can it really be?
You know, go out there, you know, swing at the
good pitches, don't swing at the bad pitches, and you'll
pay attention there not. I mean, how hard can this
really be?

Speaker 1 (20:55):
Well, you mean you're not going to come out in
your first idea is not going to be Hey, let's
do what they're doing went in college basketball. Let's make
the ground light up with all kinds of crazy stuff on.
Let's make a crazy pattern for people watching this game.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
Oh yeah, I know, Bob Ryan, but I didn't you
see bobera bye. Brian just called me a whimp on Twitter,
So I wow, yes, So apparently my photo sensitive triggered
brain waves have to tape it up next time and
so uh but yeah, so uh yeah, it's I don't
know why they do this, like seriously, like the Big

(21:29):
Twelve with this thing, like like like literally physically I'm
not capable of watching the Big Twelve tournament because of
this dumb pattern. But like why like it's is this
kind of a thing. It's like a media thing where
if you're on TV, you want people to notice your
haird or what you're saying, you know, because if you
you've got a good product, why are you trying to
distract from it? And obviously that Arizona Texas Tech game,

(21:53):
I'm sorry, Arizona Iowa State game was amazing and it's
it's kind of hard to watch when people are getting
headache seeing it.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
Did they have to put one of those disclaimers up there,
like when the Strobe light Dance Club effects.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
They should though, well, I will tell you this, they did,
and I just turned off to the Kansas Houston things.
They did do something with the lights, so it was
like a weird thing because niche and the lights were brighter.
Not to get really boring here, but like it was
really possible to watch, but they did something because I
think someone had to complain because it's much watchable right now.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
All right now is what we've seen so far this week, Pete.
There's been more conversation. I feel like every year it
gets bigger and bigger, but this year, especially considering with
Miami of Ohio and what they've gone through, this year
with all their wins that metrics has just really just
sort of taken over everything. And you know, now we
kind of forget about wins and losses being important, and
I know, you know, following you on social media, you're

(22:51):
tweeting about metrics like every eight seconds for the tournament.

Speaker 4 (22:54):
It drive me up a wall and like, look, it's
apples and oranges when it comes to football. But part
of the problem is like, look, Miami University didn't beat anybody,
it didn't play anybody, and so you can argue, well,
you know these teams wouldn't schedule them stuff. Well that's
not the point. It's you're not going off what could
have happened or might have happened. You're going off based

(23:16):
on you know, blind resumes, and like it's just not
fair that you know, could yes, it's impossible to go
thirty one and oh or whatever the FIO count was
before the ust the UMS, which is like a quad
ninety seven loss. And then you know, look at some
of these other teams who you know, they're playing tough games.
They're all playing Quad one, big tough, nasty games that

(23:38):
are you know, kind of make them more deserving to
be in and part of the problem becomes then, all right,
at the end of the day, if you're a bubble team,
you probably don't deserve to be in a sixty eighteen field,
So muhu. But if you're really trying to get down
to it and say, okay, well, are we going to
judge this team that played a whole bunch of nasty
games or this other team that played a whole bunch

(23:59):
of absolutely nothing. I mean, Miami University really did not
beat anybody, but accurate, that's about That's it. That's the
one game that they won that was actually pretty good,
and that's it. And okay, if you're that good and
you get bounced out of the the mac fought quarterfinals,
all right, I mean, yeah, this should be a place
for Miami University. But meanwhile, you know the Mount West

(24:21):
tonight lous of New Mexico and San Diego State's probably
out and Mount West is probably one big conference. American's
not that great, but there that's probably one big conference.
So it's I get it. It just doesn't seem fair
that you can get everyone saying, well, why don't you
play tough games in the non conference? Well, this is why.
And to take it over to football, same sort of thing.

(24:42):
It's like everyone lets to argue, why don't you know
certain teams play, uh, you know good teams or why
do they play like Indiana as a bad non conference schedule? Well,
why do you think you get three wins? Okay, because
nobody at the end of the day this keeps looking
at the records, and you know that's all it tends
to matter.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
To that end, beat r. We go to our old
consulting firm of Smith and Harmon. Here it's a TV show.
So is it Miami, Ohio? Far more entertaining than Bruce
Pearl clamors for his child and all.

Speaker 4 (25:12):
This other year you don't, Yeah, you don't need twelve sec.
And then that's your point and the answer, and that
the thing it really bothers everyone is neither when it
comes to and so again part of the thing is, yes,
of course I run a football site and all that
basketball was my actual college basketball is actually my first
love way back in the day.

Speaker 5 (25:30):
But so it is.

Speaker 4 (25:31):
It is absolutely different. But it is amazing how everyone
has like different standards for how these things should be
done when it's based on judges. So part of the
problem is right now, there are teams out they're like
Texas and NC State and Missouri, which in smuh, you're
all probably in even though they're just dying down the stretch.
They've been awful, like, you know, going like two and

(25:54):
seven over the last when it really counts. But that
game three back in November, you know, and some Mali
class there the mohammads, Oh yeah, that game. Meanwhile, so okay,
so we're everyone's micro analyzing that one game that happened
in the Tropics for the third game the season back
on November eleventh orh whatever. In a thirty thirty five

(26:17):
game season. Meanwhile, college football plays twelve ish games and
not a single solitary soul remembered that Alabama got trucked
by Florida State in Week one. It's like, it's so
funny just how the memories and how these different sports
are really analyzed and scrutinized, and how they figure out

(26:38):
their tournaments at the end.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
So what do you think, Pete, Now, yes, seeing this,
because we've had the twelve team playoff in the and
the selection process now for the largest tournament that we've
had in college football, we could college basketball bar from
college football. You say, you know what, this would alleviate
a lot of problems, right, like all the tournaments tank,
we're taking too many mid majors. Where should Miami Ohio
be in? What could you borrow from college football that

(27:01):
would make it better?

Speaker 4 (27:02):
Well, the one weird, weird part about this is, like
college football, if you win, if you're a power for program,
and you win your regular season championship, you're probably going
to get in to while you're gonna get into the
you know, the conference championship to begin with. But I
think the answer to this is for basketball, is honor
regular season champions more because you've got these gimmicky tournaments

(27:24):
where you know, look, Miami University did go undefeated over
the regular season and in the conference conference season, and no,
you had one bad game where the very end and
a tight you know, pressure packs baallely had a bad
pass at the end. Okay, one bad night. You just
so happen to have it on what was it, Thursday
night as opposed to uh, you know, left you know, December,

(27:47):
and so it just doesn't seem right that Okay, we're
going to judge it based on this little three days
thing that these teams, these teams are having as opposed
to the entire season and suck. Davis is texted it,
tweeted this out a whole bunch of times. But like
them this ten pick anybody they want, they don't have
to take send the conference tournament champion. Now everyone does
send the conference tournament champion, but that would be kind

(28:09):
of the answer where you know, if it's an either or,
you send Miami Universe. The otherwise you're kind of crazy
if you're the SEC not to be like, hey, we're
gonna send Auburn. Okay, so there there's our there's our
conference representative, and then get twelve teams in. So there
are ways you could do this. So I would say,
just honor the regular season champion more and then the
conference tournaments then just become a data point as opposed

(28:31):
to the be all end off.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
I mean, it would be kind of cool in a
WWE inspired kind of thing. Smith and I also thought
that maybe uh, Auburn and Miami, Ohio should just be
paired up for one of the plans.

Speaker 4 (28:42):
Yeah, yeah, you're not wrong. And see that was my
argument for the college football side, where I'm okay with
expansion in a certain way if if it's a playan
if it's not a you know, full line, we're expanding
the sixteen to it. But like this year, if you
had had Tulaine playing you know, BYU and James isn't
playing Notre Dame or something like this, Okay, there's you're
playing in these spots. So I do get the idea

(29:05):
of expansion where maybe you do expand it and have
just a massive, you know, first Tuesday, where you've got
all these teams that get just get all the one
big conferences out of the way. You know. I know
it's cute that you know, once in a while a
sixteen will be a one on the right day, and
maybe a fifteen will be a two. But for the
most part, if you really want the best tournament, just

(29:25):
just have them all have play a bigger play and
that's how you expand it. Rather than say we have
a ninety sixteen tournament and then you make it all equitable,
you have like one day where maybe you add like
six or seven more teams, because really, who are we
talking about is getting knocked out of this thing? Again,
we're arguing about a team that did not play anybody.
We're talking about a team that Auburn team that really
died down the stretch and has sixteen losses on the season,

(29:47):
and then other teams that just really don't belong in
the in the NCAA tournament, they don't really go. Who
cares they're going. They're not going to win the n
actual championship. And if you want the best tournament possible,
which is the whole goal of this thing, then you
find a way to do it. We do get the
actual best teams in there.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
He's on Twitter at Pete feutech That is at Pete
few Tech. The website college footballnews dot com. You're one
stop shopping for everything college football and during college basketball.
For the college basketball season right now, Pete Scott look
aheads to selection Sunday breakdowns of what we've seen, what
we will see again college Footballnews dot Com. Pete as always, buddy,

(30:25):
appreciate man, enjoy these crazy floors this weekend.

Speaker 4 (30:29):
Here's the people what they want's.

Speaker 1 (30:33):
See you, buddy, Look my baby. That's a great idea.
You know, it's a great It's simple. But to say, hey,
you want to honor conference champions, let's honor the regular
season ones a little bit more than just hey, things
went crazy for four days. You know, we play four months.
Let's honor those teams that were excellent for four months
more than Hey, something happened, we got a hot streak

(30:54):
here for four days. It's an easy idea, but it's
a great idea.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
And those two teams get to have a twenty four
hour political like debate like Will Ferrell against James Carville,
and the winner gets chosen.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Time now to find out what's trending in the wide
world of sports. So someone who's been called the David
Bednar of Fox Sports Radio, when he first starts talking,
it makes it a little nervous that something's gonna happen,
but everything turns out okay. In the end. It's special delivery.

Speaker 6 (31:19):
Steve to say, Yeah, this update is gonna be the
equivalent of that ten pitch at Bet Canada in the
bottom of the seventh at second and third, no outs
did not score against Bednar, so US, which was up
five to nothing in the six leads the Canadians five
to three, top of the eighth. Right now in their
quarterfinal in Houston of the World Baseball Classic, Giants starting
pitcher Logan Webb of the US through four and two

(31:42):
thirds scoreless with five strikeouts. Semi final comes up Sunday
night against Dominican Republic, which is five and zero in
the tournament after eliminating South Korea ten nothing in a
game in Miami that was shortened to seven innings by
the mercy rulds.

Speaker 3 (31:56):
Dominicans weps'ven nothing?

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Wasn't that their closest game in the tournament. The games
are like twenty three nothing, forty eight to one?

Speaker 6 (32:02):
Right, there is a mercy rule. The seventeen to two
that he mentioned not actually mathematically possible. I believe quarterfinals
continue Saturday in Houston and in Miami. Tuesday night the
final on Fox TV. This game's on Fox right now,
by the way, with USA Canada and tomorrow night Japan

(32:23):
four and oh we'll face Venezuela. There are late night
college hoops games going on. Bigie Semifinal on FS one
is going to go to sixth rank Yukon. They lead
in the final minute against Georgetown sixty seven forty nine.
Already Saint John's in New York eliminated Seaton Hall UCLA
with ten minutes to go. Is holding on to a
lead against eight rank Michigan State sixty three fifty eight

(32:47):
in a big tam Q.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Oh wait, wait, you salling Michigan State. Who is Mick
Cronin thrown out from his own team? Who is in
this game? He's he's had that. He does it every
time they play Michigan State. Who's he done at two too?

Speaker 6 (32:57):
We are getting to the final minutes. Stay tuned, people,
they are We already had. Michigan advance today and Purdue
and Wisconsin in overtime beat Number nine Illinois halftime of
an ACC semifinal. Number one Duke is rolling Clemson forty one,
twenty two Virginia blitz Miami earlier halftime in a big
twelve semi Number five Houston leads Kansas thirty three to

(33:19):
twenty five. Number two Arizona came back for a win
at the buzzer against seventh ranked Iowa State eighty two
to eighty and in the SEC quarterfinals wins today for
Florida and Vanderbilt. Mississippi advance beating Alabama eighty to seventy nine,
and right now, Oklahoma's out to a first half lead
against seventeenth rank Darkansas twenty nine, twenty four. In the NBA,

(33:43):
the early games are all final, including a Knicks win
at Indiana one oh one, ninety two. Pacers have lost
twelve straight. Detroit sent Memphis to a seventh straight loss
one twenty six to one. Ten victories for Cleveland, Toronto
and Houston has just won one oh seven one oh
five against New Orleans Kevin Durant with thirty two points

(34:03):
victor Wim MiG Yama the Spurs is questionable for sanity,
he missed last game with a sore ankle. Just two
NHL contests. Tonight, Saint Louis is just one in overtime,
three to two against Edmonton. The La Kings held on
for a three to two victory in regulation against the Islanders.
Toronto's Austin Matthews is out for this season with a
torn MCL. The Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson restructured his

(34:26):
contract back to you.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
Thank you, Steve O. We'll lot more World Baseball Classic
on the way, but straight ahead word of another big
quarterback Derby gonna go on this summer. Not only will
we tell you what it is, we'll tell you who's
gonna win it. It's coming up next right here, Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon Happy Friday, Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon. United States flashing some leather in the
eighth inning, Aaron Judge a nice running catch. Bryce terrang
a leap and grab at second base.

Speaker 3 (35:09):
Say that again, you said something positive about Aaron Judge.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
Like I said, when something happens, I say what it is.
I don't exaggerate it. I say exactly what happens. When
he makes a nice running catch. I say it. When
he grounds into a triple play against a JV high
school pitcher, I have to say it as well. I
can't just say stuff and exaggerate it just for effect.
I have to say what happened. Come on, man, that.

Speaker 3 (35:31):
Triple play was one of the worst at bats we've
ever seen.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
Grounding into a triple play too, Like that's man, that's
so United States batting in the top of the ninth inning.
They will go to the bottom of ninth at worst
with a two run lead over Canada. They move on
to the semifinal the World Baseball Classic with a win.
We'll have more in this game coming up in a
few minutes. However, today we got word that we're gonna
get another quarterback battle this summer. As to a tongue

(35:59):
of my we'll officially compete with Michael Pennix Junior for
their starting job with the Atlanta Falcons. Falcons gm Ian
Cunningham saying, definitively earlier today, two was coming in to
compete with Pennix for the starting job. And this is
how it's gonna go. Right now. We knew this was
going to happen. We knew something was gonna come off here.
But we'll tell you what. Just like with Kyler Murray

(36:21):
and JJ McCarthy, Kyler Murray was brought in to be
the number one quarterback. He's gonna be the number one
quarterback week one, a little bit different circumstances. Two was
gonna be the quarterback Week one for the Falcons right now.
There's some similarities in that the Falcons brought in to
take the job, right They brought him in to say,
you know what, Michael Pennix is not working out. This

(36:42):
is a different front office coach situation, a different hierarchy
than the one that drafted Michael Pennock junior. They have
no loyalty to them. All they have in Michael Pennix
Junior is this is a guy that was potentially talented,
maybe was overdrafted, can't stay on the field. So yes,
Towour was brought in too to be a guy to
potentially start, but they didn't bring him into sit the bench.

(37:04):
They have no loyalty to Michael Pennick Junior. But the
biggest thing is gonna be Pennix is gonna hit this
from a bit of from a really big disadvantage, and
that he's still gonna be coming back from injury. He's
a guy that's been dinged up for the last few
years for the most part, and now coming off the
big season ending injury that he had, he says, Oh,
you know, I'm coming back from his left ACL surgery
in November. I'll be ready for week one. You're talking

(37:27):
about an entire offseason of reps that are gonna go
to Tua in the new offense and everything else. Is
Michael Penick suddenly gonna show up and out play Tua
in camp when he's not even gonna take snaps. That's
not gonna happen. Tua's gonna be the quarterback week one,
and maybe Penix gets back on the field at some point.
If Tua is bad, if Tua is good, Penix is

(37:48):
not gonna see the field again. For the Atlanta Falcons,
first off, it was good to see Ian Gunningham get
out there and get and deliver all this news, you know,
not like he decided to hold up a sign saying
and we got to keep our picks hahaa.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Bears in that process with Matt Ryan and everything that
went on there. But in this case, you got a
guy coming back off his third acl you gambled, and
at this point, if he gets back on the field
eventually and he's ready for when two inevitably struggles, great,
But there's no chance in hell he's beating him out right.

(38:22):
What's he gonna do? Do it on the whiteboard? Yeah,
I'm a better student of the game, look at me. No,
he's gotta be able to play physically. Are you gonna
be able to do everything you need to come August
and into September? That would be miraculous. Again, it's not
a first go round with this. He's coming back off
his third and anything they say about, hey, this guy's

(38:43):
on track or whatever, else. Okay, we're in March, but
to think that we've advanced to that level. Yeah, let's
let's get a quarterback out there that's gotta have the
fluidity and mobility side to side in the pocket, and
they're gonna come back off a eight nine months. Man,
that just doesn't make sense to me.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
No, And here's the thing is I wonder if this
is exactly how it's going to be presented, right they
don't want to present it already here we are before
the draft that Yeah, Tua is gonna be the start
oft ok all of a sudden, now we're in a
huge controversy and it's an everyday thing. Hey, they're gonna
battle it out. Okay, well we kind of knew that,
so now you know what it's asked an answered, and
we know where the reality this is gonna be. But

(39:23):
I mean, really, guys don't play in games anymore. How
is Tua You have to be really bad to be
the number one quarterback of a team and lose that
battle in the summer. You gotta be really bad to
lose a battle in the summer when guys don't really
play in the games. And with Tua getting all the reps.
That's what's gonna happen. And I wonder if it's more

(39:44):
that if you look at Pennix almost like he's a
rookie again, like, okay, here's a new regime in they
all know what Tua can do. He's the veteran that's
brought in here to be a starting quarterback. Though maybe
he's the bridge guy. Maybe he turns out to be
the long term answer. But Pennix, it's almost like you
have to treat it like a rookie, like it's okay,
he comes in and maybe but but he's a rookie
that maybe will get his chance, not a rookie that

(40:05):
at some point he's gonna play. He's a first round pick.
He's a rookie that maybe will get his chance. That's
kind of how Atlanta is gonna be looking at this,
and that's how this, this this sham uh battle is
gonna go too. Is gonna have the gig and if
he plays well, he's gonna keep it. And if not,
then at some point when he's healthy and he's back
in he learns the offense and he's had him as

(40:28):
much time, then Pennix will get a chance to maybe
play at some point during the season.

Speaker 3 (40:31):
Yeah, I know. I don't think there's any chance off
the jump that we have a legitimate battle, but hey,
if that's how you have to position it. Uh So,
everybody feels good about themselves, that's all finding good. But
for TUA, go out and do the job. You got
plenty of weapons, and you got a coach that really
likes lefties with pop gun arms, So go get it. Yeah,
I tell you what, only have to run three yard

(40:53):
patterns and turn around because that's all he's gonna throw, and.

Speaker 4 (40:58):
Go get it.

Speaker 1 (40:59):
