assessment of the new NBA schedule. The partial list was
released today opening night, Christmas Day coming up in a
few minutes as well as well. Nikola jokicch really leave
the NBA for Greece, but The biggest basketball story of

the night is a two prong story. Firstly, and you
know game of the night. Look, this is everywhere. People
talking about it a lot on social media. Once again,
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have one hundred point game.
They beat the Liberty one oh six ninety two. It
was a big game for Caitlyn Clark in just in

thirty five minutes, twenty two points, ten assists, four rebounds.
Also Mitchell with a big game two she had twenty
eight Sophie Cunningham twelve off the bench, four threes. Before
we get to the controversy, what happened before the game, which.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Wait a minute, there was something controversial.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I have surprise. Surprise. Yeah, eventually we're gonna have a
day where it's gonna be WNBA had some great games today.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
One else, No, that's it. Nothing, No what else? No,
nothing else? No, they did nothing.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
By the time that happens, football season will have started
and the w NBA will be largely invisible.

But to just this for a second, to understand, you
talk about the controversy every single day. Uh, people better
start getting used to the fact that the Fever are
going to win the title they are dealing. They're they're
already one of the top three teams in the league. Way,
if Minnesota is killing it this day, they have become
a top three team. Minnesota was really good. They've been
really good all year. Right, Minnesota barely escaped that game

against them last Sunday. Minnesota played that game like it
was like it was a WNBA Finals game. Not that
the Fever didn't play it that way, but every Minnesota
played as well as they could and they barely escaped
that game against the Fever.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Minnesota has the big rookie Olivia Miles. He's to establish
stars just come back from jury. This is the best
team in the standing right now.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Fever is gonna win the title. That was a big
litmus test and I saw more from the Fever and
defeat in that game than Minnesota in winning. It took
the Fever a little bit of time to kind of
start to gel. Member Caitlyn Clark missed all year last year,
basically all year last year. There's new players, new new
situations moving in and now they're scoring one hundred points

a game. Right. This is how well they are playing
over the course of the last fifteen to twenty games.
They're going to win the title, mainly because when the
playoffs get here and the pressure of the playoffs are here,
the Fever live in controversy every single days. Like I
talk about how the Eagles like to live in controversy

every day in Philadelphia, it's like every day, it's like
by they just bathe it. Oh no, no, the Fever
they have a big pool of controversy and they all
do high dive jumps off it into the pool every day.
They know how to live with controversy and live with
it every day and still win and still play at
a high level. And I give all kinds of credit
(03:58):
when you can do that. Stuff like this would tear
every single team, most other teams apart one. How do
you play when every single day is controversy over your
best player and her treatment, and now one of your
bench players and off the court stance on trans athletes,
and now you have your head coaches in the middle
of things, and you've started a whole big WNBA back
and forth about this. But yet every single night they

show up, they score one hundred points. Their offense is great.
Caitlin Clark is playing like an MVP candidate.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Right.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
You have great players on this team. The pressure of
the playoffs is going to be like a kid giving
out candy compared to what the Fever are going through. Oh,
playoff press. You want to talk about pressure every single
day in the regular season. Look at what it's like
to live with us. Look at what it's like for
all of us every single day. They're gonna win the title.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
So you're saying that this team in the WNBA is
kind of like the Reggie Jackson Yankees, where they go
through so much and they were in New York and
they still win. They still have the playoff pressure, they
can still come through. They still have the talent on
the field. Oh, I'll go even more recent. This is
like the Heatles.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
This was Lebron and Wade and Bosh and the traveling
show that went from town to town and it was
it was everybody hated the Heatles, but they couldn't get
enough of them. And we're watching and I love Lebron,
I hate Lebron, I love Wade, I hate Wade, I love.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Bod I know I was really saying that that was
the script for Emma.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yes, but that is this is the attention that they
have and packing arenas everywhere they go and worrying about
playing the other team, and the officials like, and they're
still scoring one hundred points. Again, they're still playing at
such a high level, and they are peaking really about
at the right time. You know, they're game thirty three.
(05:38):
You have a handful of more games to go in
the regular season end right, This is right where you
want to be playing your best basketball, and they have.
They took them a little while because again, Caitlin Clark
missing all your last year. I get it. You know
you need some time to get through. And what kind
of ball dominant player is she going to be? Is
there going to be room for other players to achieve
on this team? Clearly it is because Kelsey Mitchell's having

a terrific year. She's at the top of the MVP
list as well, she's scoring twenty five a game. There
is more than enough room. This is the team that's
gonna win the WNBA title.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
By the way I looked it up, it's for Indiana schedule.
It's only eight of their last ten our national DDNN.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
It's at eight of ten exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
But keep in mind, and we reference this on last
night's show, this is a year where the Basketball World
Cup happens for women's hoops, So a lot of the
stars that you're seeing are gonna be playing for Team
USA shortly. So the WNBA after this month has to
take a couple weeks off. Yeah, no WNBA games at
all while that World tournament is going on, and then
(06:41):
they resume, and that pushes the end of the season
to basically the last week of the Major League Baseball season.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
No, I think they're playing. I think the final game
of the finals for the WNBA is Thanksgiving night.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
No, I'm talking at regular season is gonna end when
baseball regular season?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (06:57):
No, I think it's after the late game. No, after
the night game. It's a midnight East Coast game.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
And then THEWNBA Finals will be opposite that next game
on Christmas and the NFL. Yeah, exactly, No, so it's
on the schedule. The first place Minnesota team is going
to be facing Clark's Indiana team in the last two
games home and home that final week. Unfortunately, it's going
to be opposite baseball Pennant Race stuff, and as I mentioned,

football season will be well underway by that point in
toward late September. That was a whole nother conversation last night.
But yeah, we're nearing the end. But oddly where what
would this be a month and a half away from
the end. It's just you have that break coming in
the WNBA slate.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Now, Jason, do you have an example more recently than
just three days ago with this whole thing with the
Indiana Fever. Glad you asked before the game tonight. Fever
head coach Stephanie White. A lot of headlines that she
has made, not all of them great the last few weeks.
There's a lot of people that want or fired. She
hates Caitlin Clarks not standing up for players. All these
(08:03):
things happening. She had a very fiery pregame speech to
the media because of what happened following the Sophie Cunningham
Dejona Carrington foul from last.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Weekend flagrant over the weekend and they didn't think that
she stood up for her play.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
The Lieutenant governor of Indiana wants her fired because she
didn't stand up for her player, right, because you see
the video after the hard foul the Carrington puts on
Cunningham and she walks onto the court past Sophie Cunningham,
right to Carrington, which is why are you walking past
there to talk to a player on the other team.
Why are you not with your player? Who before but okay, okay,

I get okay.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Tonight home game in Indiana and some of the home
fans booed this coach for Indiana pregame.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah, and so that was a thing. And then afterwards
when she was asked about the situation, she basically defended Carrington,
saying she didn't do it on purpose. Was it a foul?
Is it over the over the loft? I know her.
She's not someone doing this on purpose. This is someone
who went out and absolutely went for the head of
one of your players. This is where you got to
(09:11):
understand who is in your locker room and who is
no longer in your locker room. So I get all
of the attention on Stephanie White that what she doing.
You got to stand up for your players. You're gonna
walk by your player to go talk to the player
on the other team that you coach, then you're gonna
defend her. I mean, really, nobody does that. In no
way is there a flagrant foul where someone's thrown out

of a game and the head coach says, yeah, I
saw that. I thought it was okay. Wait what Yeah,
your players just almost got their head taken off. Yeah, now,
but I thought it was okay. Here's Stephanie White before
the game, now upset that people are criticizing her for
this behavior.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Every day. These women put their ass on the line
every day.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
When they go low, we go high.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and
kindness win.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
I stand by them. I will always stand by them.

Everybody else can go to hill.

Pounding that podium and that podium.

She did not take up any questions. After you're here,
gather our paper.

Can I just say, coach, as you in a one
woman press conference, think you've made your point. She also said, hey,
over the weekend, I went straight to the press conference.
I thought I got that play with the flagrant foul right, thankfully,
Sophie's Okay, was that egregious Saturday? Absolutely? But you know,
when you have a chance to watch that over and
over and over on replay, you can see that I
(10:36):
didn't have that in real time.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Well, then don't be.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Done bad about it.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, well, and also listen, see it in.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Your mouth you should have spoken not at all about that.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
And look, and this is kind of the plug. We've
seen this from Carrington before. You know, we saw it
three years ago. She was one that had the really
bad foul on Caitlyn Clark from behind the very first
time we saw whistle blown. Where whoa she just on
an inbound play. She just walks and knocks Caitlyn Clark
down from behind and the refereegius blows a whistle for
a common foul like that was Dejanee Carrington. So when
(11:06):
I see this and I see Stephanie White now grandstanding
about this, the bottom line is as a coach, you
did not have your players back. You did not have
your players back in the moment. You didn't have it
after the press conference. If I'm Sophie Cunningham, I sit
here and say my coach does not like me, right,
because that's the only thing that I can draw from
this is that Stephanie White is not the biggest fan
(11:28):
of Sophie Cunningham. Because why would you not stand up
for your player? Your player, your player, that's who you
have loyalty to is your player, and you made it
look like you cared more about the player on the
other team. Now is this something that comes with Sophie
Cunningham and her public stances, very big public stance she
had on trans athletes. It's become the big debate in
(11:49):
the WNBA. I don't know what it is, but I
but I saw that and I said, that's someone who
doesn't like Sophie Cunningham. I don't like my player because
I'm not going to go, are you okay? Are what's
going on? You can't do that? Why am I not?
I should be calling for a flagrant her to be
thrown out of the game. This is how coaches react
when a foul like that has committed. This is what
(12:10):
Mike Brown would do. This is what Mitch Johnson would do,
although he would.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Call it Riley when the Kurt Rambis and the Finals
was clothesline.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
This is what everybody would do. This is what Doc
Rivers would do, because you know it's never Doc rivers fault,
but this is what every coach was. She acted the
opposite of how a coach should act in a situation
like that, and now she wants she doesn't like the smoke,
doesn't like the people are saying, hey, how do you
not have your players back? Again? That's The only thing
that I can take away from this is that she
(12:37):
doesn't like Sophie Cunningham.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
This Indiana coach dug another hole in a potential grave
with this outburst, taking no questions and yelling at the
media to get her point across before the game tonight.
And by the way, Caitlin Clark did say after the game,
I hated that our fans booed her pregame tonight. Made
me a little sick, to be honest, you can understand
because of what you just said, what the Indiana fans
(13:00):
would be thinking.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
One of their own.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Players was completely illegally, flagrantly fouled, and her own coach,
Stephanie White for Indiana, was not sticking up for her
after the game. So mistake number one coach. How she
approached that being dogmatic without having actually seen the replay
on Saturday before going to the postgame press conference, that's
(13:24):
a little amazing to me. Point number two is the
whole love will win, the quote that we played and
going on and on about that, which would you would
think play very well in the heartland, and then the
language she continually used throughout the press conference much less
the attitude completely negates any Christian attitude she may have
(13:44):
put forth. This is a lost number two in the
past week for Stephanie White in my book.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Yeah, I mean, but again, they're able to go through
all of this stuff and still score one hundred points
a game and win. And now they're twenty one to twelve,
and again, anybody's as to make one of the top
three teams both record wise talent wise. They're ascending. I
give them all because I don't know how they win
like this. I really don't. I don't know how with
every single day stuff like this happening, they win. And
(14:10):
I guarantee you this Stephanie White thing, which is awful
for her and she should really take more ownership over this.
It's not gonna matter. They'll go out and score one
hundred their next game, Kaylyn Clark will go twenty five
and twelve.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
They're averaging like ninety seven, which nobody's done in the
WNBA for.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Kelsey Mitchell score thirty. You know, Aliah bosteill score twenty
and pulled down seven like that, and they'll still go
and Nelston Win is gonna be like, yeah, this is
just another day for us, just another day.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
One other WNBA note before we break, Kelsey Plumb of
Phoenix now is out at LA tonight would have been
playing against her old team due to a leg injury.
So mid third quarter Phoenix is leading fifty four fifty
three at LA. I have read the Sparks are not
playing at the Lakers Arena downtown. They are playing elsewhere
downtown at USC's Galen Center, which has half the seats

half the capacity. Apparently there's some concert if nobody I've
heard of taking pla.

on the ledger. We can start imagining what we're going
to see this season, and certainly we're getting an idea
of where the league and the broadcast partners are putting
their money. And you know, I just want to pour
one out for Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell and Cooper

Flag and Anthony Edwards. Apparently the NBA bouncer has said, sorry, fellows,
you no longer on the A list. You're going to
have to go over there and get in line and
wait your turn. Because last year all of them were
in featured games either in the SA He's an opener,
season opener, or on Christmas Day, And from what I've seen,

none of them will be appearing in any marquee game.
So obviously the NBA is off the bloom when it
comes to those particular stars.

Sorry, ham mam, Well, look that that's how it goes right.
Look just like in the w NBA where the Indiana
Fever every game is nationally televised, you have to nationally
televise every next game. So yeah, some other teams are
not going to get to be on TV as much. Man,
I don't know.

Can anybody in the studio? Can you tell me? Is
he licking his lips right now?
Speaker 3 (20:35):
It's going to be six months of this?

What gamell brother? We've already had six months. I mean
it's going to be another six months. Maybe I hate
to say this, it's probably going to be longer than
six months.

Yeah, yeah, I look. So you've seen the schedule. Now,
these first few games here, we talked about a couple
of them. Well, what what are you looking forward to
seeing the most?
Speaker 4 (20:56):
I think number one, I want to see Victor obviously. Obviously,
I want to see what what what Philadelphia looks like
coming out out of the gate. Who's who's available and
who's not. Now those pieces are going to work together.
I think the other part for me, I'm really curious
to see what kind of game Victor webbin Yama comes

back with. There was a lot of talk about him
playing on the perimeter. He's talked a lot about the
game has to go through me. I have to be
more assertive with my teammates and the way we play
with all of them coming over to France and enjoining
some wine and baguettes with him. You know what, what
(21:37):
kind of influence does that have on the team chemistry?
That that for me, among the marquee games, that's probably
the number one thing, because I think that that probably
is going to have the most to do with who
we're going to see playing in June. Is what kind
of player is Victor wembin Yama going to be coming
(21:57):
back after the disappointment of falling short to the mighty
New York Knicks.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
I have a question Rick about the schedule on opening
day because or at night, I should say, but they're
throwing a day game in there, which really surprised me.
So it's an opening triple header October twentieth. Now, just
this week Baseball announced its postseason schedule, at least the
structure of it, and if there's a game seven of
the Alcs, it would be on the night of October twentieth.

So the NBA is not only going to have its
two games that opening night, including Philly at New York,
they're shoehorning a day game on a Tuesday with the
Celtics at Detroit at three eastern. Your reaction to that, Yeah, well,
I think.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
That that I would say that that is at least
in part, looking at the international market for TV and
trying to attract that. I know that Boston and Detroit doesn't.
It's not like Victor Winn Mignata right, or Nika dancicch
are involved. But I still think that that there is

a that there is a market there. And and I
would say, you know, the Lakers owner is now also
the Dodgers owner, so they probably have some insight info
that they're going to sweep and there's not going to
be an.

Issue with the game seven Alcy.

Yeah. Oh excuse me, sorry, I thought you were I
haven't seen that schedule. I thought you were saying that
the World Series would go to a seventh game on
that date.

No, they just literally yesterday, I think, came out with
the baseball structure.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
Yeah, so away from the world champion Knicks in their
schedule and there are sixty five regular season games broadcast
on national TV. This crazy story yesterday, Rick, where the
owner of one of the big teams in Greece made
a run at Nikola Jokic and was told no, no, no,
no no. He So that's okay. I have an offer
(23:49):
ready for him after this year when he can make
an offer to Jokic. Is there a dollar sign? Is
there a dollar? Is there amount? Is it one hundred
million dollars a year? Is there any way that after
this year Jokic gets all kinds of money and goes
to play in Greece? Can this actually happen?
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Not from not from what I've been told about Jokic,
and it's then it's from people that are are close
to him, which is like his He there's been a
real fire lit under him in terms of the NBA
and wanting to one lead to Denver Nuggets back, but
(24:28):
two really demonstrate who he is as a player. There's
there's always been kind of a fun, loving aspect to Jokic,
which we've seen slowly transform. I think we've seen it
the way he's interacted with his teammates, the way he's
taken more of a leadership position, the way he's been
more vocal. My understanding is that he's embraced all that.

There was a point where a couple of years ago
where he couldn't he couldn't wait to get out of town.
I think it might have been after they won the
championship and and then the subsequent year when they got
knocked out, Like he was on the first first flight
out going back home. He missed being back home and
wanted to be there. But my understanding is that now

he is more motivated than ever to demonstrate what he's
capable of doing in the NBA, and so I just
I don't know. I don't think there is a figure
that would would result because it's not about the money
with him right now. It's about demonstrating who and what
(25:33):
he can be in the NBA, and that's stronger than
it's ever been.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
About the never ending Kawhi Clippers investigation, Cleaster, I believe
that's been going on almost a calendar year at this point.
Do you have any idea of what a conclusion would
look like. Would there be a suspension and the trade
away from the Clippers would still go through, and would
this be settled actually before the next season begins on
(25:58):
October twentieth, Well, I.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
Would certainly, I would certainly hope so, and I would
expect that the league would want to conclude it before
the start of the season so that it doesn't drag on.
It's not a distraction. The NBA is very good about
that in terms of getting things out of the way
when they're unsightly and or wrapping them up when they're unsightly.
(26:21):
I can only go by what was done in the
Joe Smith instance with the Minnesota Timberwolves when it was
discovered that there was cap circ convention and Penny's on
the dollar compared to this, but it had to do
with them agreeing to a contract while he was still
under contract, or signing a contract with the anticipation that
(26:43):
he would get a promised contract down the line. He
was not suspended, the management was, ownership was. There was
a heavy fine, there were draft picks taken. I would
expect that that would be the same the same course here,
and he was declared a free agent, so he was
(27:08):
and he was not allowed to re sign with Minnesota.
So this in a way I could see where this
ends up being a bone for Toronto. In fact, if
i'm the Raptors, I'm I'm glad that you know no
deal is going to be consummated, because there's a world
in which they might be able to sign sign him
(27:30):
as a free agent and then he's on the market.
I don't know what the dollar amount would be, but
I can't think of anybody of you know, any teams
that have significant cap space, you know, I mean the
Chicago Bulls, and I think there's one or two other teams,
but not teams that if Kawhi Leonard is looking to
be competing on the level that he could with the
(27:53):
Toronto Raptors, not teams that he would be interested in.
So I expect it's going to cost Steve Balmer a
pretty penny, but I mean it's again that's not going
to affect him at all. The big question is going
to be for where the Clippers are right now, the
draft picks, how many draft picks are going to be taken.
(28:14):
But at the end of the day, I fully, fully,
fully expect that they will rip up Kauhi's contract. And
there's just there's too much evidence that there was ancillary
funds offered in association with signing him, and I could
see where Look, you're not getting any more dividends from
(28:37):
having signed Kawhi Leonard as a free agent. We're going
to cut him loose. But beyond that, here's the reality.
Steve Balmer has so much money that. I don't know
that there's a penalty that the league could place on
him short of making him sell the team. And I
don't see any way in which they would do that.
(28:58):
So everything else is gonna be. Yeah, he's gonna he's
gonna have to suffer a penalty, but it's not it's
not anything that is going to significantly change or if
it's ready to operate.

Not monetary and you can't go in the arena or
game night and stuff like that. I guess that's all right.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
Yeah, look, I suppose giving his baseline seat up where
he's he's.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Recognizable an enthusiastic fan.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Yeah, I mean I again, Okay, I suppose. But in
the big picture, you can't go to games for a year,
I don't know. I mean, yeah, I guess that's a
that's a penalty for all that they did to get
Kawhi Leonard and the and the impact that it had
on their ability to build the arena and do everything else.

I dare say that that giving up his baseline seat
for a year in order to get that done, it
was a worthy cause.

Rick Buker, He's on Twitter at Rick Buker, also the
On the Ball podcast, and I know you got a
big on the Ball podcast coming up. You're going to
talk about what's going on the issues facing the WNBA.
We just spent a lot of time a few minutes
ago talking about tonight, and Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White,
give us a little teaser. What some of the things
you think the w could be doing, you know, facing
(30:23):
all the issues that they are right now.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Well, I think the biggest issue is that that they
have an absentee overlord in the NBA. I mean, everybody
kind of focuses on the WNBA and what they are
and they aren't doing. The reality is is the WNBA
is owned by the NBA owners and so thereby by
(30:47):
the NBA. And my question is, why doesn't the NBA
treat the WNBA. Why doesn't it handle it? Why does
it not struck it and have the same demands and
regulations and care for the WNBA on the same level
(31:09):
as it does the NBA, Because if it did, because
if it did, then the WNBA wouldn't have all the
problems that it has because there's just no there's no protocol,
there's no like DJNA Carrington. I mean, if that's Draymond Green,
She's been fined and suspended for some of the fouls
(31:34):
that she's committed. To this point already, Kathy Engelbert no
longer has her job because of the multitude of pr gaps.
I mean, imagine if Adam Silver did some of the
things that Kathy Engelbert has done, like, there is no
way he's still the commissioner of the NBA. And so
I think a big reason is to the WNBA. For
(31:55):
the first time last year, they don't have disclosed how
much money they made, but it supposedly was in the
black by some very very small margin. So when you
think about all the money that the NBA makes and
what the owners care about most, which is money, and
the WNBA doesn't make anything generally hasn't made any money.
(32:20):
I just I don't think there is a whole lot
of care or attention given to the WNBA by the
NBA owners. And until they do, then it's going to
continue to be a side show. And for somebody who
cares deeply about women's basketball, because I've got skin in
the game, it's hard for me to see it because
(32:43):
it's they are all problems of their own making, and
it all trickles down from the top.

Series my little league did get to The Little League
World series last, year but that was three years AFTER
i had coached. There as someone who has been in
charge of the paperwork and filling out paperwork For All,
stars for my, daughter for other girls on the, team
and knowing what it, Is i'm gonna say, this everybody

knows what they're filling. Out everybody knows what they're doing
when they're filling out. Paperwork they make. It the league
is gonna tell them it's a big. Deal knowing that,
that you have to come up with your birth. Certificate
like our girls couldn't play unless they had a. Cup
you have to give a copy of your birth certificate
for them to hold for the for the tournament to,
(39:01):
hold and then you get it back at the. End
there's a binder that you turn in with every single,
player their birth, certificate their, address the schools they go.
To you turn in all of. This it's a it's
a it's as legit a situation as you could possibly think.
About there's a lot of detail that goes into. This
So i'm just gonna say everybody knows what they're filling
(39:23):
out going into the. Tournament, OKAY i don't know what
happened here When i'm telling you, that when you see
how we, Are, oh here's a birth date that was
that was, wrong and here's everybody knows what they're filling
out going into.

In oklahoma was that the dad of the player quote
mistakenly entered the wrong birth year when registering the. SIBLING
i mean.

Yes and now there's a question of the sibling keeping
that person. Eligible and there's all sorts of rules to
keep people. Eligible right if you go to a school,
there if you live in the, area there's all kinds of,
rules and every year there's. Differences if you, here you
have to play in. This this new little league is,
starting so if you're, here you have to play. Here now,
Again i'm just gonna tell you it's it's when you're

filling out your stuff for All, stars everybody. Responsibility everybody
knows that they're fact because it's gone over with a
fine tooth. Comb because the thing you want to, do
is the, person the administrator in charge of the little
league is going to see the birth date and, go,
whoa this is a wrong birth, date because that's the
first thing everybody looks at is the birth. Date hey,
wait everybody, else you're born and this is a Two
(40:30):
this is a twenty twelve birth. Date whoa this twenty
eleven birth? Date that's Too, whoaa, whoa you can't play
here that that's two. Thousand the first thing everybody looks
at is the birth date when it's filled. Out, again
everybody looks at.

This so in the court, documents once the issue arose this,
postseason the parents withdrew the player from The Tulsa national
and but before The Southwest. Region and still it costs
it winds up costing Him Southwest.

Everything but, again LIKE i, SAID i know how this.

know game of the night. Look, this is everywhere. People
talking about it a lot on social media. Once again,
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have one hundred point game.
They beat the Liberty one oh six ninety two. It
was a big game for Caitlyn Clark in just in

thirty five minutes, twenty two points, ten assists, four rebounds.
Also Mitchell with a big game two she had twenty
eight Sophie Cunningham twelve off the bench, four threes. Before
we get to the controversy, what happened before the game, which.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Wait a minute, there was something controversial.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I have surprise. Surprise. Yeah, eventually we're gonna have a
day where it's gonna be WNBA had some great games today.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
One else, No, that's it. Nothing, No what else? No,
nothing else? No, they did nothing.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
By the time that happens, football season will have started
and the w NBA will be largely invisible.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
But to just this for a second, to understand, you
talk about the controversy every single day. Uh, people better
start getting used to the fact that the Fever are
going to win the title they are dealing. They're they're
already one of the top three teams in the league. Way,
if Minnesota is killing it this day, they have become
a top three team. Minnesota was really good. They've been
really good all year. Right, Minnesota barely escaped that game
(02:34):
against them last Sunday. Minnesota played that game like it
was like it was a WNBA Finals game. Not that
the Fever didn't play it that way, but every Minnesota
played as well as they could and they barely escaped
that game against the Fever.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Minnesota has the big rookie Olivia Miles. He's to establish
stars just come back from jury. This is the best
team in the standing right now.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Fever is gonna win the title. That was a big
litmus test and I saw more from the Fever and
defeat in that game than Minnesota in winning. It took
the Fever a little bit of time to kind of
start to gel. Member Caitlyn Clark missed all year last year,
basically all year last year. There's new players, new new
situations moving in and now they're scoring one hundred points
(03:17):
a game. Right. This is how well they are playing
over the course of the last fifteen to twenty games.
They're going to win the title, mainly because when the
playoffs get here and the pressure of the playoffs are here,
the Fever live in controversy every single days. Like I
talk about how the Eagles like to live in controversy
(03:37):
every day in Philadelphia, it's like every day, it's like
by they just bathe it. Oh no, no, the Fever
they have a big pool of controversy and they all
do high dive jumps off it into the pool every day.
They know how to live with controversy and live with
it every day and still win and still play at
a high level. And I give all kinds of credit
(03:58):
when you can do that. Stuff like this would tear
every single team, most other teams apart one. How do
you play when every single day is controversy over your
best player and her treatment, and now one of your
bench players and off the court stance on trans athletes,
and now you have your head coaches in the middle
of things, and you've started a whole big WNBA back
and forth about this. But yet every single night they
(04:21):
show up, they score one hundred points. Their offense is great.
Caitlin Clark is playing like an MVP candidate.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Right.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
You have great players on this team. The pressure of
the playoffs is going to be like a kid giving
out candy compared to what the Fever are going through. Oh,
playoff press. You want to talk about pressure every single
day in the regular season. Look at what it's like
to live with us. Look at what it's like for
all of us every single day. They're gonna win the title.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
So you're saying that this team in the WNBA is
kind of like the Reggie Jackson Yankees, where they go
through so much and they were in New York and
they still win. They still have the playoff pressure, they
can still come through. They still have the talent on
the field. Oh, I'll go even more recent. This is
like the Heatles.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
This was Lebron and Wade and Bosh and the traveling
show that went from town to town and it was
it was everybody hated the Heatles, but they couldn't get
enough of them. And we're watching and I love Lebron,
I hate Lebron, I love Wade, I hate Wade, I love.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Bod I know I was really saying that that was
the script for Emma.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yes, but that is this is the attention that they
have and packing arenas everywhere they go and worrying about
playing the other team, and the officials like, and they're
still scoring one hundred points. Again, they're still playing at
such a high level, and they are peaking really about
at the right time. You know, they're game thirty three.
(05:38):
You have a handful of more games to go in
the regular season end right, This is right where you
want to be playing your best basketball, and they have.
They took them a little while because again, Caitlin Clark
missing all your last year. I get it. You know
you need some time to get through. And what kind
of ball dominant player is she going to be? Is
there going to be room for other players to achieve
on this team? Clearly it is because Kelsey Mitchell's having
(06:00):
a terrific year. She's at the top of the MVP
list as well, she's scoring twenty five a game. There
is more than enough room. This is the team that's
gonna win the WNBA title.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
By the way I looked it up, it's for Indiana schedule.
It's only eight of their last ten our national DDNN.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
It's at eight of ten exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
But keep in mind, and we reference this on last
night's show, this is a year where the Basketball World
Cup happens for women's hoops, So a lot of the
stars that you're seeing are gonna be playing for Team
USA shortly. So the WNBA after this month has to
take a couple weeks off. Yeah, no WNBA games at
all while that World tournament is going on, and then
(06:41):
they resume, and that pushes the end of the season
to basically the last week of the Major League Baseball season.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
No, I think they're playing. I think the final game
of the finals for the WNBA is Thanksgiving night.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
No, I'm talking at regular season is gonna end when
baseball regular season?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (06:57):
No, I think it's after the late game. No, after
the night game. It's a midnight East Coast game.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
And then THEWNBA Finals will be opposite that next game
on Christmas and the NFL. Yeah, exactly, No, so it's
on the schedule. The first place Minnesota team is going
to be facing Clark's Indiana team in the last two
games home and home that final week. Unfortunately, it's going
to be opposite baseball Pennant Race stuff, and as I mentioned,

football season will be well underway by that point in
toward late September. That was a whole nother conversation last night.
But yeah, we're nearing the end. But oddly where what
would this be a month and a half away from
the end. It's just you have that break coming in
the WNBA slate.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Now, Jason, do you have an example more recently than
just three days ago with this whole thing with the
Indiana Fever. Glad you asked before the game tonight. Fever
head coach Stephanie White. A lot of headlines that she
has made, not all of them great the last few weeks.
There's a lot of people that want or fired. She
hates Caitlin Clarks not standing up for players. All these
(08:03):
things happening. She had a very fiery pregame speech to
the media because of what happened following the Sophie Cunningham
Dejona Carrington foul from last.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Weekend flagrant over the weekend and they didn't think that
she stood up for her play.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
The Lieutenant governor of Indiana wants her fired because she
didn't stand up for her player, right, because you see
the video after the hard foul the Carrington puts on
Cunningham and she walks onto the court past Sophie Cunningham,
right to Carrington, which is why are you walking past
there to talk to a player on the other team.
Why are you not with your player? Who before but okay, okay,

I get okay.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Tonight home game in Indiana and some of the home
fans booed this coach for Indiana pregame.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah, and so that was a thing. And then afterwards
when she was asked about the situation, she basically defended Carrington,
saying she didn't do it on purpose. Was it a foul?
Is it over the over the loft? I know her.
She's not someone doing this on purpose. This is someone
who went out and absolutely went for the head of
one of your players. This is where you got to
(09:11):
understand who is in your locker room and who is
no longer in your locker room. So I get all
of the attention on Stephanie White that what she doing.
You got to stand up for your players. You're gonna
walk by your player to go talk to the player
on the other team that you coach, then you're gonna
defend her. I mean, really, nobody does that. In no
way is there a flagrant foul where someone's thrown out
(09:32):
of a game and the head coach says, yeah, I
saw that. I thought it was okay. Wait what Yeah,
your players just almost got their head taken off. Yeah, now,
but I thought it was okay. Here's Stephanie White before
the game, now upset that people are criticizing her for
this behavior.

Every day. These women put their ass on the line
every day.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
When they go low, we go high.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and

when you have a chance to watch that over and
over and over on replay, you can see that I

about this, the bottom line is as a coach, you
did not have your players back. You did not have
your players back in the moment. You didn't have it
after the press conference. If I'm Sophie Cunningham, I sit
here and say my coach does not like me, right,
because that's the only thing that I can draw from
this is that Stephanie White is not the biggest fan

of Sophie Cunningham. Because why would you not stand up
for your player? Your player, your player, that's who you
have loyalty to is your player, and you made it
look like you cared more about the player on the
other team. Now is this something that comes with Sophie
Cunningham and her public stances, very big public stance she
had on trans athletes. It's become the big debate in

the WNBA. I don't know what it is, but I
but I saw that and I said, that's someone who
doesn't like Sophie Cunningham. I don't like my player because
I'm not going to go, are you okay? Are what's
going on? You can't do that? Why am I not?
I should be calling for a flagrant her to be
thrown out of the game. This is how coaches react
when a foul like that has committed. This is what

Mike Brown would do. This is what Mitch Johnson would do,
although he would.

like that, and now she wants she doesn't like the smoke,

not have your players back? Again? That's The only thing
that I can take away from this is that she

doesn't like Sophie Cunningham.

This Indiana coach dug another hole in a potential grave
with this outburst, taking no questions and yelling at the
media to get her point across before the game tonight.
And by the way, Caitlin Clark did say after the game,
I hated that our fans booed her pregame tonight. Made
me a little sick, to be honest, you can understand
because of what you just said, what the Indiana fans

would be thinking.

Players was completely illegally, flagrantly fouled, and her own coach,
Stephanie White for Indiana, was not sticking up for her
after the game. So mistake number one coach. How she
approached that being dogmatic without having actually seen the replay
on Saturday before going to the postgame press conference, that's

a little amazing to me. Point number two is the
whole love will win, the quote that we played and
going on and on about that, which would you would
think play very well in the heartland, and then the
language she continually used throughout the press conference much less
the attitude completely negates any Christian attitude she may have

put forth. This is a lost number two in the
past week for Stephanie White in my book.

Yeah, I mean, but again, they're able to go through
all of this stuff and still score one hundred points
a game and win. And now they're twenty one to twelve,
and again, anybody's as to make one of the top
three teams both record wise talent wise. They're ascending. I
give them all because I don't know how they win
like this. I really don't. I don't know how with
every single day stuff like this happening, they win. And

I guarantee you this Stephanie White thing, which is awful
for her and she should really take more ownership over this.
It's not gonna matter. They'll go out and score one
hundred their next game, Kaylyn Clark will go twenty five
and twelve.

you no longer on the A list. You're going to
have to go over there and get in line and
wait your turn. Because last year all of them were

none of them will be appearing in any marquee game.
So obviously the NBA is off the bloom when it
comes to those particular stars.

Look just like in the w NBA where the Indiana
Fever every game is nationally televised, you have to nationally
televise every next game. So yeah, some other teams are
not going to get to be on TV as much. Man,

of them. Well, what what are you looking forward to
seeing the most?

I think number one, I want to see Victor obviously. Obviously,
I want to see what what what Philadelphia looks like
coming out out of the gate. Who's who's available and
who's not. Now those pieces are going to work together.
I think the other part for me, I'm really curious
to see what kind of game Victor webbin Yama comes

back with. There was a lot of talk about him
playing on the perimeter. He's talked a lot about the
game has to go through me. I have to be
more assertive with my teammates and the way we play
with all of them coming over to France and enjoining
some wine and baguettes with him. You know what, what

kind of influence does that have on the team chemistry?
That that for me, among the marquee games, that's probably
the number one thing, because I think that that probably
is going to have the most to do with who
we're going to see playing in June. Is what kind
of player is Victor wembin Yama going to be coming

back after the disappointment of falling short to the mighty
New York Knicks.

I have a question Rick about the schedule on opening
day because or at night, I should say, but they're
throwing a day game in there, which really surprised me.
So it's an opening triple header October twentieth. Now, just
this week Baseball announced its postseason schedule, at least the
structure of it, and if there's a game seven of
the Alcs, it would be on the night of October twentieth.

So the NBA is not only going to have its
two games that opening night, including Philly at New York,
they're shoehorning a day game on a Tuesday with the
Celtics at Detroit at three eastern. Your reaction to that, Yeah, well,
I think.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
That that I would say that that is at least
in part, looking at the international market for TV and
trying to attract that. I know that Boston and Detroit doesn't.
It's not like Victor Winn Mignata right, or Nika dancicch
are involved. But I still think that that there is

a that there is a market there. And and I
would say, you know, the Lakers owner is now also
the Dodgers owner, so they probably have some insight info
that they're going to sweep and there's not going to
be an.

Issue with the game seven Alcy.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
Yeah. Oh excuse me, sorry, I thought you were I
haven't seen that schedule. I thought you were saying that
the World Series would go to a seventh game on
that date.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
No, they just literally yesterday, I think, came out with
the baseball structure.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
Yeah, so away from the world champion Knicks in their
schedule and there are sixty five regular season games broadcast
on national TV. This crazy story yesterday, Rick, where the
owner of one of the big teams in Greece made
a run at Nikola Jokic and was told no, no, no,
no no. He So that's okay. I have an offer
(23:49):
ready for him after this year when he can make
an offer to Jokic. Is there a dollar sign? Is
there a dollar? Is there amount? Is it one hundred
million dollars a year? Is there any way that after
this year Jokic gets all kinds of money and goes
to play in Greece? Can this actually happen?
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Not from not from what I've been told about Jokic,
and it's then it's from people that are are close
to him, which is like his He there's been a
real fire lit under him in terms of the NBA
and wanting to one lead to Denver Nuggets back, but
(24:28):
two really demonstrate who he is as a player. There's
there's always been kind of a fun, loving aspect to Jokic,
which we've seen slowly transform. I think we've seen it
the way he's interacted with his teammates, the way he's
taken more of a leadership position, the way he's been
more vocal. My understanding is that he's embraced all that.
(24:50):
There was a point where a couple of years ago
where he couldn't he couldn't wait to get out of town.
I think it might have been after they won the
championship and and then the subsequent year when they got
knocked out, Like he was on the first first flight
out going back home. He missed being back home and
wanted to be there. But my understanding is that now
(25:12):
he is more motivated than ever to demonstrate what he's
capable of doing in the NBA, and so I just
I don't know. I don't think there is a figure
that would would result because it's not about the money
with him right now. It's about demonstrating who and what
(25:33):
he can be in the NBA, and that's stronger than
it's ever been.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
About the never ending Kawhi Clippers investigation, Cleaster, I believe
that's been going on almost a calendar year at this point.
Do you have any idea of what a conclusion would
look like. Would there be a suspension and the trade
away from the Clippers would still go through, and would
this be settled actually before the next season begins on
(25:58):
October twentieth, Well, I.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
Would certainly, I would certainly hope so, and I would
expect that the league would want to conclude it before
the start of the season so that it doesn't drag on.
It's not a distraction. The NBA is very good about
that in terms of getting things out of the way
when they're unsightly and or wrapping them up when they're unsightly.
(26:21):
I can only go by what was done in the
Joe Smith instance with the Minnesota Timberwolves when it was
discovered that there was cap circ convention and Penny's on
the dollar compared to this, but it had to do
with them agreeing to a contract while he was still
under contract, or signing a contract with the anticipation that
(26:43):
he would get a promised contract down the line. He
was not suspended, the management was, ownership was. There was
a heavy fine, there were draft picks taken. I would
expect that that would be the same the same course here,
and he was declared a free agent, so he was
(27:08):
and he was not allowed to re sign with Minnesota.
So this in a way I could see where this
ends up being a bone for Toronto. In fact, if
i'm the Raptors, I'm I'm glad that you know no
deal is going to be consummated, because there's a world
in which they might be able to sign sign him
(27:30):
as a free agent and then he's on the market.
I don't know what the dollar amount would be, but
I can't think of anybody of you know, any teams
that have significant cap space, you know, I mean the
Chicago Bulls, and I think there's one or two other teams,
but not teams that if Kawhi Leonard is looking to
be competing on the level that he could with the
(27:53):
Toronto Raptors, not teams that he would be interested in.
So I expect it's going to cost Steve Balmer a
pretty penny, but I mean it's again that's not going
to affect him at all. The big question is going
to be for where the Clippers are right now, the
draft picks, how many draft picks are going to be taken.
(28:14):
But at the end of the day, I fully, fully,
fully expect that they will rip up Kauhi's contract. And
there's just there's too much evidence that there was ancillary
funds offered in association with signing him, and I could
see where Look, you're not getting any more dividends from
(28:37):
having signed Kawhi Leonard as a free agent. We're going
to cut him loose. But beyond that, here's the reality.
Steve Balmer has so much money that. I don't know
that there's a penalty that the league could place on
him short of making him sell the team. And I
don't see any way in which they would do that.
(28:58):
So everything else is gonna be. Yeah, he's gonna he's
gonna have to suffer a penalty, but it's not it's
not anything that is going to significantly change or if
it's ready to operate.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Not monetary and you can't go in the arena or
game night and stuff like that. I guess that's all right.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
Yeah, look, I suppose giving his baseline seat up where
he's he's.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Recognizable an enthusiastic fan.

Yeah, I mean I again, Okay, I suppose. But in
the big picture, you can't go to games for a year,
I don't know. I mean, yeah, I guess that's a
that's a penalty for all that they did to get
Kawhi Leonard and the and the impact that it had
on their ability to build the arena and do everything else.

I dare say that that giving up his baseline seat
for a year in order to get that done, it
was a worthy cause.

talk about what's going on the issues facing the WNBA.
We just spent a lot of time a few minutes
ago talking about tonight, and Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White,
give us a little teaser. What some of the things
you think the w could be doing, you know, facing

all the issues that they are right now.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Well, I think the biggest issue is that that they
have an absentee overlord in the NBA. I mean, everybody
kind of focuses on the WNBA and what they are
and they aren't doing. The reality is is the WNBA
is owned by the NBA owners and so thereby by
(30:47):
the NBA. And my question is, why doesn't the NBA
treat the WNBA. Why doesn't it handle it? Why does
it not struck it and have the same demands and
regulations and care for the WNBA on the same level
(31:09):
as it does the NBA, Because if it did, because
if it did, then the WNBA wouldn't have all the
problems that it has because there's just no there's no protocol,
there's no like DJNA Carrington. I mean, if that's Draymond Green,
She's been fined and suspended for some of the fouls
(31:34):
that she's committed. To this point already, Kathy Engelbert no
longer has her job because of the multitude of pr gaps.
I mean, imagine if Adam Silver did some of the
things that Kathy Engelbert has done, like, there is no
way he's still the commissioner of the NBA. And so
I think a big reason is to the WNBA. For
(31:55):
the first time last year, they don't have disclosed how
much money they made, but it supposedly was in the
black by some very very small margin. So when you
think about all the money that the NBA makes and
what the owners care about most, which is money, and
the WNBA doesn't make anything generally hasn't made any money.
(32:20):
I just I don't think there is a whole lot
of care or attention given to the WNBA by the
NBA owners. And until they do, then it's going to
continue to be a side show. And for somebody who
cares deeply about women's basketball, because I've got skin in
the game, it's hard for me to see it because
(32:43):
it's they are all problems of their own making, and
it all trickles down from the top.

And it also it means the team that's going To
Williams sport is the team that Won.

coached a team into the end of the state, tournament
where the same thing that it's the same thing for

came in. Third we came in. Second we missed getting
to the regions which would get us The Little League World.
Series my little league did get to The Little League
World series last, year but that was three years AFTER
i had coached. There as someone who has been in
charge of the paperwork and filling out paperwork For All,
stars for my, daughter for other girls on the, team
and knowing what it, Is i'm gonna say, this everybody

knows what they're filling. Out everybody knows what they're doing
when they're filling out. Paperwork they make. It the league
is gonna tell them it's a big. Deal knowing that,
that you have to come up with your birth. Certificate
like our girls couldn't play unless they had a. Cup
you have to give a copy of your birth certificate
for them to hold for the for the tournament to,
(39:01):
hold and then you get it back at the. End
there's a binder that you turn in with every single,
player their birth, certificate their, address the schools they go.
To you turn in all of. This it's a it's
a it's as legit a situation as you could possibly think.
About there's a lot of detail that goes into. This
So i'm just gonna say everybody knows what they're filling
(39:23):
out going into the. Tournament, OKAY i don't know what
happened here When i'm telling you, that when you see
how we, Are, oh here's a birth date that was
that was, wrong and here's everybody knows what they're filling
out going into.

This the comment from The Little league district administrator there
In oklahoma was that the dad of the player quote
mistakenly entered the wrong birth year when registering the. SIBLING
i mean.

Yes and now there's a question of the sibling keeping
that person. Eligible and there's all sorts of rules to
keep people. Eligible right if you go to a school,
there if you live in the, area there's all kinds of,
rules and every year there's. Differences if you, here you
have to play in. This this new little league is,
starting so if you're, here you have to play. Here now,
Again i'm just gonna tell you it's it's when you're
(40:07):
filling out your stuff for All, stars everybody. Responsibility everybody
knows that they're fact because it's gone over with a
fine tooth. Comb because the thing you want to, do
is the, person the administrator in charge of the little
league is going to see the birth date and, go,
whoa this is a wrong birth, date because that's the
first thing everybody looks at is the birth. Date hey,
wait everybody, else you're born and this is a Two
(40:30):
this is a twenty twelve birth. Date whoa this twenty
eleven birth? Date that's Too, whoaa, whoa you can't play
here that that's two. Thousand the first thing everybody looks
at is the birth date when it's filled. Out, again
everybody looks at.

This so in the court, documents once the issue arose this,
postseason the parents withdrew the player from The Tulsa national
and but before The Southwest. Region and still it costs
it winds up costing Him Southwest.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Region, YEAH i. Member the chance said. It this story,
sucks and it sucks for all those. Kids it sucks for.
Everything but, again LIKE i, SAID i know how this.
Goes everybody knows what they're filling, out and if you
fill it out, wrong there's many more fail safes in
there to, say, hey we need to fix this before
